has arrived in a flash. It only feels like yesterday that we were putting the Christmas decorations back in the loft; now we are thinking about when we will be going back up there to retrieve them and if the fairy lights still work? November is one of the biggest present buying months of the year and if, like me, you want to get ahead and organised November is the place to get on top of the task. Being organised not only helps with your festive stress levels, it also helps you to be more local. Panic buying at the last minute only leads to the flurry of Amazon deliveries and cramming unwanted packaging into the recycling bin. We have so many great suppliers throughout the area it is a shame not to make the most of them. Clothing, gin, cheese, wine, furniture... the list goes on. When you buy these goods you not only get a great gift that looks like you have really given it some thought, you also help support your local community. Rachel Gilbert talks about her experience from the beginning of the first lockdown till now and what she has learned along the way - head to page 44. This month also sees a milestone for Places&Faces, this issue marks the magazine's 11th birthday, 132 issues young. Raise a glass everyone... Here's to another 132.

It’s beginning to look a lot like

Christmas The festive season is upon us, here are some of the best things to enjoy in the month before the big day itself

The Tunnel of Light

says Melanie Cook of VisitNorwich.co.uk

If like many

of us, you feel you missed out last Christmas, then worry not. Christmas 2021 sees the return of some old favourite festive things to do and the welcome addition of some new ones. If you are wandering around Norwich from the beginning of November and you pass The Assembly House, you might just glance twice into their gardens - there is some unusual activity taking place. Situated at the front of the House you’ll find a collection of pop-up igloos! The good news is that you can reserve them for your very own private get togethers to enjoy Prenoon Tea (breakfast version of the traditional afternoon tea) or a Narnia themed afternoon tea. Teas are bookable November right through until 2 January. Don’t hang around though to book, they are popular! Narnia evokes feelings of nostalgia in me so to be enjoying perfect finger sandwiches, lashings of warm beverages and delights such as ‘Raspberry Snowflake Dodger’, and ‘Snowy Black Forest Cheesecake’ in an igloo makes me imagine warm and cosy times with friends or family. You can also complement your tea with extras such as

14

Mysabar

Turkish Delight cocktails, mocktails and hot chocolate. Teas are priced at £35.00 per person and £22.00 for under 12s. If, however you fancy dining in glorious Georgian surrounds under shimmering crystal chandeliers you can do that too. Afternoon Tea inside the House is £23.95 per person or £47 for two. Not forgetting you can also have Cakeaways to be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. In October we saw the welcome return of Mysabar in Castle Quarter Gardens. Its latest iteration sees bigger tents, extra

seating and heaters, new floors and décor plus more choice than ever of craft beers, local drinks and food. And as Christmas gets underway there will be winter warmers and festive dishes plus some special one-off events and live music. Keep an eye on their website (www.mysabar.co.uk), and Instagram (@ mysabar_) for details of what’s coming up as tables need to be booked for 2-hour sittings (tables of 2, 4, 6) though some tables are available for walk-ins. It wouldn’t be Christmas in Norwich without the Tunnel of Light and this

Norwich Market

Overlooking Norwich Market

year it’s runs from 16 November until 5 January. It remains one of the most popular sights in the city along with Norwich Castle projections. So, pop along and grab yourself a festive selfie. Christmas 2021 is extra special because there’s a 900-year-old anniversary to celebrate! In 1121 one of the most powerful medieval kings, Henry I, used Norwich Castle as the venue for his Christmas court. And so, hundreds of years later Norfolk Museums Service rightly wants to share the story of Henry I and his Norwich Christmas with us all. Events to celebrate the Christmas court in the City of Stories includes beautiful 70ft projections onto the castle portraying, through the medium of film, the royal Christmas visit, one of the few recorded visits to Norwich by an Anglo-Norman king. There will also be a programme of Christmas at the Castle: The Story of the King activities - for details take a look at www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk. Inspired by The Story of the King, Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) and VisitNorwich are working in partnership with Norfolk Museum Service to bring a Christmas Crown Trail from the castle to the Tunnel of Light. Following a printed map, look out for crowns of all shapes and sizes in many forms in the windows of participating shops, restaurants and businesses. But you’ll need a keen eye. The trail will take you across Norwich including the 900-year-old market. I wonder if Henry ever visited our award-winning market? Whilst at Norwich Market look out for a special VisitNorwich pop-up stall located at the top of the market. It has to be Norwich’s smallest Christmas installation. Here visitors will find quirky pictures and photography depicting Christmastime in Norwich over the centuries (17 Nov–17 Dec, during Norwich Market trading hours). Items on display will include festive family photos, past Christmas events in Assembly House

Norwich, images of decorated shop windows - anything that shows what Christmas represented or was like in Norwich over the years. There will also be Christmas trees and fairy lights and maybe a hidden crown or two. Just around the corner treat yourself to a delicious, mulled wine from Sir Toby’s Beers before you take a look around. On a particularly crisp day why not top it up with a slug of rum or whisky? I love this charming small bar so much it’s now become a tradition of mine each Christmas to visit with friends. It seems most of us love a good old Christmas market, so save the date for the Festive Fair at the Forum to truly

For £38 you learn how to craft a stunning wreath to take home plus the price includes a glass of Prosecco and a mince pie, as well as all your materials. To book your place call 01603 272008. Finally, Houghton Hall last month opened its inaugural Autumn/Winter exhibition - Chris Levine at Houghton Hall 528Hz Love Frequency. I’m really excited by this as it is a major solo exhibition featuring a series of new holographic artworks, print works and large immersive laser and LED installations. All created specifically for the unique environs of the house

It seems most of us love a good old Christmas market, so save the date for the Festive Fair at the Forum to truly get in the mood. In Norwich between 25–28 November with free entry... get in the mood. In Norwich between 25–28 November with free entry you’ll find wonderful entertainment and music including Norfolk’s own Pavilion Brass Quartet and a traditional fairground organ. Dine on winter food and drink from waffles and gourmet doughnuts to freshly roasted almond pralines. There will be stalls galore inside The Forum for all your Christmas shopping. Get your list ready to buy local: jewellery; pottery; plants; textiles; woodcraft; glassware; art; clothes; tins; preserves; decorations; lifestyle and so much more. The Forum looks particularly lovely when the sun goes down, filled with sparkly lights and decoration. and grounds. Each distinctive work is characteristic of Levine’s unique and cutting-edge work with the meditative and immersive properties of light and sound. You may know Levine for his light portraits of famous cultural figures. In 2012 his depiction of the QueenLightness of Being was described by the National Portrait Gallery as the most evocative image of a royal by any artist. Along with this royal portrait, iconic meditative portraits of Banksy, and Grace Jones, amongst others, will be shown in the South Wing gallery. It’s important to say this is not a Christmas event, so those who like to get away from all the festivities will be especially delighted! It runs until 23 December from 4.30pm–9pm, Thursday–Saturday. Tickets cost £18 including parking, under 18s are free.

STAY THE NIGHT

Norwich

The City of Stories is bookended by a cathedral and a castle, with plenty to see and do in between

This

easy-going and, as the signs rightly proclaim, fine city is the main hub of shopping, culture, food and attractions within Norfolk. As the most complete Medieval city in the country, it’s just as interesting to walk round as it is inside the many quirky shops and bars. Once one of the most affluent cities, it has always been a popular place to visit, and an excellent base for Norfolk’s Broads and beaches. Today you’ll find plenty of historical buildings, winding cobbled lanes filled with independent shops, one of the largest and oldest outdoor markets in Britain and a myriad of places to enjoy a bite to eat or a cheeky drink.

What to see and do

If it’s a dose of history you’re after, you’ll find it here. Boasting 33 medieval churches, a complete Tudor cobbled street at Elm Hill,

and of course the soaring spire of the Norman cathedral – complete with the largest cloisters in England – there’s something to interest everyone. A tour of Norwich Castle’s eclectic exhibits is also a must – be sure to head to the battlements for unrivalled views over the city. If you’re here to shop ‘til you drop, first head to Jarrold, the family-run independent department store. For independent shops you can’t beat the Norwich Lanes – in fact, almost half of the city’s shops are independent, so you’re sure to find something unique. Of course, you can’t come to Norwich without having a browse of the famed market place, where another rite of passage is to enjoy the sights with a portion of delicious market chips.

Eat

Norwich is a city made for foodies. For a slap up meal, try the Farmyard, a Michelin-listed restaurant where you’ll find a relaxed bistro/ gastronomy set-up offering dishes featuring the finest local ingredients. If you still fancy dining al fresco, the cosy (and heated) Mysabar tent is back throughout autumn and winter, offering tasty food from a rotating line-up of local traders and some of the best craft beers, wines and cocktails. www.farmyardrestaurant.com www.mysabar.co.uk

The Maids Head Hotel Complete your trip with a stay at the oldest hotel in the UK. The Maids Head has a history that dates back over 800 years, and is conveniently situated in the heart of the city, so the sights are all on your doorstep. All the bedrooms have recently been refurbished, with many including charming period features. Ranging from standard through to suites with stunning views of Norwich Cathedral, all rooms have en suites, tea and coffee facilities, Freeview television and an in-room iPad guest services directory. The hotel also boasts an award-winning fine dining restaurant and an inn on-site, where you can enjoy sumpuous evening meals and afternoon teas, or simply a nightcap in the bar. www.maidsheadhotel.co.uk

My Top 5 Simple & Budget-Friendly Christmas Activities by Emily Sparks Get baking (or just decorating if baking’s not your thing!)

Have a Christmas movie night/afternoon With the chaos of family life, opportunities to sit and put your feet up in front of a good film can be few and far between. Whilst it may sound painfully obvious, sitting down together to watch a festive flick is a fantastic opportunity to pause and relax in the glow of those twinkly Christmas tree lights. Make it extra special by stocking up on festive treats like hot chocolate (or mulled wine for the adults if you prefer – I’m not here to judge!), mince pies and a tub of Quality Street. If it’s a hit, make it a weekly treat throughout the lead up to Christmas with each family member taking it in turns to choose their favourite movie.

Christmas.

The most wonderful time of the year. Although, for parents and carers, it can often be the most stressful and expensive time of the year. It’s all too easy to fall into the black hole of looking at little squares of other people’s family lives and feeling that you too need to take your children to frolic with elves and reindeer in Lapland (all whilst wearing matching festive pyjamas, of course), have afternoon tea with Father Christmas and Mrs Clause (served by genuine elves, flown in especially from The North Pole), and adorn your home in enough lights to give Rudolph arc eye! Deep down, we all know that really it's not about what you spend but who you’re spending it with. And actually, there’s every chance that once the presents are long forgotten and outgrown, it’s the memories children will treasure. So, without further ado, here’s my list of simple and budget-friendly festive activities...

Like it or loathe it, children love baking. I’m not sure whether it’s the promise of tasty treat at the end, the opportunity to be creative or just their innate attraction to anything that has the potential to create a horrific mess. That aside, spending time together baking, building and decorating a ginger bread house provides a delightful opportunity for both young and old to get into the Christmas spirit. If you don’t fancy yourself as the next Bake Off champion, kits containing pre-fabricated ginger bread houses are widely available. Even if constructing a pre-baked ginger bread house feels a push too far for your structural engineering skills, it’s the decorating kids seem to like the most. Buy a packet of biscuits; some writing icing and some sweets and let them decorate to their heart’s content. Just remember to keep soft furnishings out of harm’s way!

The movies to watch Everyone has their own family favourites, but during the build up to the big day I recommend that you watch one or all of these must-see movies... It never quite feels like Christmas without them.

Arthur Christmas Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, James McAvoy leads an excellent cast in this fun spin on the festive story... A must watch.

Elf Will Ferrell shines in a Christmas movie that has joined the ranks of holiday classics. Buddy the elf has a special place in our hearts.

Home Alone Prep & Kevin never fails Landing

Rise of the Guardians

to entertain as he battles Harry and Marv to defend the family home. Maybe stick to the first film of the franchise to avoid disappointment.

A wonderful film which includes a tattooed sword weilding Santa, what's not to love about that? A movie to be enjoyed time and time again.

Wayne gets a new rookie partner, instead of a promotion. But what he really needs is to be reminded of the true spirit of Christmas.

Don’t get too caught up on spelling – I know it sounds counter-productive coming from an English teacher but trust me, kids soon switch off if they see too much red pen. Focus on a couple of age/ability-appropriate spellings and do your best to ignore the rest. It’ll be endearing if you dig the letter out at some point in the future. Cultivate their vocabulary – Encourage children to think of snazzy synonyms. “Can you think of another word for ‘cold’?” or “What could you say instead of ‘Christmassy’?” Decorate – Not all kids love writing. In fact, for many it can be exhausting and frustrating. Once your child has finished composing their letter, invite them to decorate it with pictures, colours or even sequins. Remember to post it – thankfully there are a variety of mediums by which Father Christmas can receive his mail. Some like to send their letter up the chimney, some leave it under their pillow and others post it via Royal Mail who ensure Santa writes back, as long as they receive the letter by the 11th December.

See the lights I imagine that by 2065, Outdoor Christmas Decorating will be an Olympic sport. Over the course of my lifetime, Christmas light displays have become increasingly elaborate with fierce rivalry brewing amongst neighbourhoods as they compete to see who will be crowned Christmas Light Champion of the Year. Make the most of it. As children, I vividly remember that my sister and I enjoyed the most mundane of car journeys during the festive season as it provided the perfect opportunity to enjoy all those twinkly lights from the comfort and warmth of the backseat of our Mum’s Ford Mondeo Estate. Sometimes, it really is the simplest things! If however, you’re made of more intrepid stuff than my sister and I, you could always wrap up warm and take a wander around your local area to bask in the glow of other people’s hard work. You might even warm up with a hot chocolate/mulled wine and mince pie on your return. As they say around here, “Job’s a good’un!”

Christmas cheer...

Write letters to Santa Cliché but hear me out. Before embarking on my current career of Domestic Engineer/Child Development Associate/Household Co-Ordinator, I was an English teacher. As such, I couldn’t really compile a list of festive activities without throwing in a written assignment. Nothing says Christmas like literacy, hey? Writing letters to Father Christmas is an age-old activity but it’s not escaped the long arm of consumerism. Lately, these letters have become less about the traditional pleasantries of asking after the elves and reindeer and more like Mariah Carey’s rider, complete with Amazon links. This is an activity that children of all ages can take part in, even those who are still grappling with the most basic literacy skills. Here are my tips: Provide a structure – Give kids a list of questions to answer such as “What would you like to tell Father Christmas about yourself?” “Is there anything you’d like to know about Father Christmas or life at the North Pole?”

I’m not recommending that we all channel Scrooge in the final chapter of A Christmas Carol - The Muppets did a good version if Dickens isn’t for you - but really, Christmas is all about spreading kindness. If the last two years has taught us anything, it’s the power of kindness and community. Encourage your children to reflect on the things they’re grateful for and think about things they can do to brighten someone else’s festive period. It could be as simple as making a homemade card and delivering it to an elderly neighbour or perhaps during a trip to the supermarket, they could be given a budget to choose items to donate to the local food bank. No matter how small a gesture, encouraging children to take the time to think about things they can do to help and support others is an invaluable lesson.

Whether you’re looking for Christmas gift inspiration, party activities or a way to pass a dreary Sunday afternoon, here are our top...

The party game: Taskmaster

Whether you’re familiar with the TV show or not, you’ll love this quirky, funfilled game. Take turns in choosing a taskmaster (unfortunately, Greg Davies not included) and compete with your friends to perform a set of absurd tasks. The game comes with a winner’s trophy, loads of ludicrous tasks, a downloadable code for the taskmaster timer app and exclusive video assignments by little Alex Horne.

The strategy game: Catan

You and your fellow players will need your brains and plenty of time for this one. The aim is to gain dominance over Catan, a land rich in natural resources, bartering and strategising in order to upgrade humble settlements into powerful cities. If you want to win, you’ll need to anticipate other player’s moves and work out plan b’s.

DID YOU KNOW? • There are over 4 trillion ways to fill a Connect Four board • The longest game of Monopoly lasted 70 days • Jenga is Swahili for “build” • Two Canadian news editors found pieces of their Scrabble game missing and decided to make their own – Trivial Pursuit

The family game: Articulate!

If family are descending upon you en-masse, Articulate! is the board game to break out. This trivia classic has straightforward rules that anyone can get involved with. Plus, the subject range is broad enough that you don’t need to be a font of obscure knowledge to win. It’s a sure-fire way of getting everyone away from their smartphones and chatting, just like the good old days!

The drawing game: Scrawl

Forget Pictionary – this hilarious adult party game is for all the bad artists of the world: the worse you are at drawing, the funnier it will be. You and your pals must draw silly scenarios such as “A Monkey Knife Fight”, “Octopus Mating Season” or “A Haunted Oven”, then pass it on and try to describe the new drawing in front of you. Simple and very effective.

The quick game: Dobble

Don’t want to be locked into hours of gameplay? Dobble is a fast, familyfriendly and highly competitive card game with rounds taking as little as 5-15 minutes. The aim of the game? Each two cards have one symbol in common. Be the first to find and name it to win the card. Expect lots of shouting, card snatching and general chaos/merriment as you battle to be the fastest eye.

Morton’s free-range turkeys are a beautiful centrepiece for Christmas dinner, with generous quantities of sweet white and dark meat. Turkey breasts and crowns will also be available for purchase, as well as cockerels, a great alternative to turkey for smaller festive gatherings. Christmas Day hampers (small, medium and large) will be packed with produce for the day itself - turkey, smoked salmon, pigs in blankets, free range pork and chestnut stuffing, traditional Christmas pudding and more.

Coffee

Macarons paired with

Salted caramel espresso martini

INGREDIENTS: SERVES: makes 15 macaroons • 100g egg whites • 110g caster sugar • 120g ground almonds

Coffee macarons

• 100g icing sugar

Macarons are considered dainty and beautiful treats and are surprisingly simple to make too. These delicious coffee ones have sweet almondy shells which are sandwiched between a salty and rich dark chocolate ganache - they are perfect when paired with the Salted Caramel Espresso martinis as an after-dinner showstopper.

• 2 tsp espresso powder • Cocoa powder, for dusting Ganache: • 200g dark chocolate • Pinch of Maldon salt • 300ml double cream

METHOD: In a food processor, place the icing sugar, ground almonds and espresso powder. Blitz together until fine in texture. Sift this through a sieve into a large bowl and discard any larger bits that don’t pass through. In a separate bowl, use an electric whisk to beat together the egg whites until they resemble soft peaks. Slowly add the sugar – a tsp at a time – whisking to incorporate after each addition. Keep whisking until all the sugar is added and the egg whites are glossy and at stiff peak stage. Tip the egg whites into the ground almonds and fold them through until fully incorporated, trying not to over-mix. Line two baking trays with baking paper. A good tip is to use a little of the macaron mixture to stick the corners of the paper to the tray to ensure it doesn’t blow and flutter in the oven. Place the macaron mixture into a piping bag with a small nozzle attached. Pipe 30 small circles (15 on each tray). Then bang the tray onto the

work surface firmly a couple of times to knock any air bubbles out. Leave the macaroons to dry out at room temperate for 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 180˚C. While the macaroons are drying, make the ganache. Finely chop the dark chocolate and place in a large heatproof bowl along with a pinch of Maldon salt. Pour the cream into a small pan and heat gently until it reaches scalding point but before boiling. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and then without stirring, leave it to sit for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, use a whisk to mix and combine the chocolate into the cream – it will thicken and become smooth and glossy. Set aside. After an hour, put the macaroons into the preheated oven and bake for 15–20 minutes until crisp. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool completely. Once cool, sandwich the shells together with the ganache and dust them with cocoa powder.

Salted caramel espresso martini Salted caramel works beautifully in this take on a classic espresso martini. Delicious served after dinner alongside Coffee Macarons.

INGREDIENTS: SERVES: makes 1 • 2 tbsp caramel sauce

• 50ml coffee liqueur

• 1 tsp Maldon salt

• Ice

• 50ml hot espresso

• Cocoa powder, for dusting

• 70ml vodka

• 3 coffee beans, for garnish

METHOD: Mix together the hot espresso with the caramel sauce and Maldon salt, stir together so the caramel and salt melt. Place this into the fridge or freezer to cool completely. In a cocktail shaker add ice cubes, then the cooled espresso, vodka and coffee liqueur. Shake it well for 1 minute. Then pour into martini glasses through a fine strainer, making sure to add all the liquid. Dust half the top with cocoa powder and garnish with 3 coffee beans. Serve immediately alongside coffee macarons. 39

Make the perfect

Bloody Mary with

Smoked Salt

A classic Bloody Mary recipe made even better with Maldon’s smoked salt.

INGREDIENTS: SERVES: makes 2 • Maldon smoked salt • Ice • 100ml Ketel One vodka • 500ml spicy tomato juice • 1 tbsp lemon juice (plus lemon wedges, to garnish) A few dashes of Worcestershire sauce (to taste) A few dashes of Tabasco (to taste) • Cracked black pepper • Celery stick and olives to garnish

METHOD: Start by preparing the glasses with a smoked salt rim. Take 2 highball glasses and run a lemon wedge around the rim. Then pour some Maldon salt onto a small, flat plate. Take each glass and turn it upside down into the salt and turn and press it so the smoked salt sticks to the rim. Set aside while you make the Bloody Mary. Into a jug add the Ketel One vodka, spicy tomato juice and lemon juice and mix well. Then fill the jug with ice and add the Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco and cracked black pepper (to taste). Stir the ice round until it has chilled all the ingredients but not too long as to water it down. Fill the Maldon smoked salt rimmed glasses with ice. Then pour in the Bloody Mary cocktail. Garnish with a stick of celery, a wedge of lemon and some olives on a cocktail stick. 40

Creamy Beetroot

Risotto with

blue cheese & walnuts This risotto is a wonderful combination of earthy beetroot, salty blue cheese and nutty walnuts. The beetroot dyes the whole dish a beautiful pink colour making it a treat for the eyes as well as the tastebuds. INGREDIENTS: SERVES: 4 • 5 beetroot • 40g butter • Olive oil • 1 onion, finely diced • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 180g arborio rice • 125ml red wine • Vegetable stock • 50g blue cheese (such as Stilton), crumbled • 10g walnuts, toasted and roughly chopped • 3 sprigs of thyme, leaves picked

METHOD: Preheat the oven to 180˚C. Place each beetroot onto a piece of foil, drizzle with oil and wrap each individually. Then place them onto a baking tray and into the preheated oven, roast them for 30 minutes until soft and tender. Whilst the beetroot is roasting you can start the risotto. In a large wide frying pan heat the olive oil and 30g of butter. When the butter is melted and foaming add the finely chopped onions along with a pinch of Maldon salt. Allow the onions to cook over a gentle heat until soft and translucent. After they have softened, add the garlic and fry for an additional 2 minutes. Next add the arborio rice and stir so all

the grains are well coated in the onions. Fry for 2 minutes and then add the red wine, allowing the wine to bubble and be absorbed by the rice. Once the wine is absorbed begin adding the hot vegetable stock a ladle at a time, allowing each addition to be absorbed by the rice before adding the next. The rice should be tender but still with a little bite. Once the beetroot has roasted, remove from the oven and unwrap the foil to allow them to cool slightly. Once cool enough to handle carefully peel away the skins (you might want to wear gloves for this as they can stain your hands). Once peeled, roughly chop 3 of the beetroot and place in a blender or

food processor and blend until smooth and pureed. Chop the other two beetroot into a small dice. Pour the pureed beetroot into the risotto and stir through, it will turn it a brilliant pink colour. Next add the diced beetroot and stir through. Check the seasoning of the risotto and add a generous pinch of Maldon salt and some cracked black pepper. Finally add the 10g butter at the end and melt through to give a creamy and glossy texture. Divide the risotto among 4 plates and then top with the crumbled blue cheese, toasted walnuts and thyme leaves. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a final sprinkle of Maldon salt. 43

heart he art of

How global pandemics and lockdowns have made me live more local

By Rachel Gilbert

Shopping local

and supporting small businesses is at the heart of living in East Anglia. We live in close knit communities and many of our neighbours produce the food on our tables. It is, however, often these small businesses that get hit the hardest during global pandemics, fuel crises and other curve balls. During the first lockdown, I decided to set myself a challenge to alter my spending habits, and it ended up bringing me a whole lot more than fresh produce and locally-sourced goods. I made friends and altered my spending habits long term. I have always been a champion for shopping locally. You can taste the difference in food when it hasn’t travelled the ocean, and it is always lovely to catch up with the lovely shop keepers. To fulfil my lockdown challenge, my deal with myself was to never step foot in the nearest bigname supermarket. I restricted myself to shops with a local last name above the door — where I knew the name of the face behind the counter. My main stops on my charming — albeit busy in the summer — high street were the deli, the greengrocer’s and two small convenience stores. I learned so much from this project, and have tried to carry as many of my new habits with me beyond those first months spent inside.

45

Life&Living

the

Life&Living

It is cheaper to shop on the high street... Ok, maybe the savings were partly due to the fact that I couldn’t really go to a pub and had no reason to buy a lot of items. The greengrocers in my town is extremely reasonable, especially when shopping in season for British-grown goods. Smaller shops like these often run deals when fruits and vegetables are going out of date — I love creating a meal exclusively with “sad section” finds. Prior to the pandemic, the shop was cash-only, and I continued this into the pandemic, however, I decided to “quarantine” any and all change into a little savings pot which came in very handy when the pubs reopened! Additionally, shopkeepers enjoy seeing regular faces and will reward loyalty. You are supporting them and sometimes you may be rewarded with a few extra wonky carrots, or a “rounding-off” of your total.

You are supporting real people in your community. Getting to know the producers in the area you live and shop in is wonderful — not only as a consumer, but as a member of the community. I started my challenge timidly stepping into the local deli to see what was on offer. Now I can walk in and boldly ask for my friends, and ask for advice on how to revive my sourdough starter. Martin Billing owns five shops on the Norfolk coast said getting to know owners and staff in local shops will elevate your experience. “You’ll get added value from knowing exactly who you are supporting,” Martin said. Knowing who you are supporting each time you spend is rewarding. Each time you step into a shop, wou will be greeted by a familiar face that knows their customers and is willing to help you have the best shopping experience possible.

It is more sustainable than the supermarket. I have an endless collection of cardboard boxes from the greengrocers and the local market — much more environmentallyfriendly than a plastic bag. Each time I stepped on to the high street, I knew I was doing my part to reduce my carbon footprint. The food miles are typically lower, and I wasn’t getting into my car each time I needed a box of eggs. Most shops will accept the boxes back as well, so they can be recycled for another customer. Furthermore, many of the bulk-buy items are packed in-house and don’t necessarily need a container. Some shops will fill a container brought in by customers, it is always worth checking beforehand.

One major positive from the past year is the support people have showed for local and independent businesses, with almost

64%

of Brits

choosing to shop closer to home. Barclaycard Payments data shows shoppers spent an extra 63.3% in February at food and drink specialist stores, such as butchers, bakeries and greengrocers, compared with the same month last year. Shopping locally is set to be a lockdown legacy, with

9 in 10 Brits

who have been shopping locally throughout the pandemic saying they will keep doing this to support smaller and independent businesses even after all restrictions end. Data from: Barclaycard - Lockdown legacies

By the end of April 2020, internet search for banana bread had soared by

525% and pictures of

successful bakes were posted on Instagram more than

45,000 times.

The shopping experience is tailored to you. In all walks of life, we love seeing a familiar, friendly face. Naomi Herbert, owner of Salthouse Stores, said local shops provide a great community hub for people to relax and catch up in. Smalltown stores are often frequented by a small group of people regularly, and can be a great spot to meet like-minded people in your area. Local shops will always do their best to help out regular customers. A convenience shop near me ordered a certain type of milk and a particular brand of hand cream so I could continue my streak of avoiding the supermarket. “By and large, a local retailer will bend over backwards to source a product for a customer,” Naomi said. Come Christmas, I was lucky enough to walk into the deli and hand a list of ingredients to my friend behind the counter who ordered everything for me for the perfect fruit cake. Word of mouth is vital for local shops, and I wouldn’t hesitate to send anyone to my favourite shops. 47

As a local business owner, how did the pandemic change the spending habits of your customer base?

Naomi Herbert Why do you think it’s important to shop local? Even prior to the pandemic, we believed that shopping locally had numerous benefits. Shopping as near to home as possible not only saves time, but also saves on the cost of travel and inevitably has less of an impact on the carbon footprint. As an independent retailer we take great pleasure in carefully sourcing as many of our products and produce from as many local businesses as possible. This not only ensures quality, but again, reduces the carbon footprint and boosts both the local economy as well as the local workforce.

When the pandemic began we had only had the business for 8 months. Even so, in this short space of time the shop evolved quite organically, but also very rapidly! All of a sudden we had new customers coming; not only from Salthouse, but from surrounding villages too... people who were not comfortable in visiting the supermarkets or were unable to get an online delivery. Thus began the game of Tetris! Trying to fit as many shelves as possible into a small shop! Listening to customer’s needs was paramount. We aimed to stock whatever was asked of us, from custard powder to mung beans, kombucha to Irn Bru! With the lockdowns easing and visitors returning, the result is a pretty eclectic mixture of products that reflect the shopping needs of our community and its visitors.

creativity and independence in our towns and villages.

As a consumer, how did the pandemic change your spending habits? I’ve always been a big supporter of local but the pandemic has elevated that. It’s made me go out of my way to make considered purchases with local independents.

As a local business owner, how did the pandemic change the spending habits of your customer base?

Martin Billing

We’ve certainly seen more people coming out to shop independent. Customers have really appreciated the opportunity to touch and experience the product before they buy again.

Martin and Sarah Billing own five shops on the north Norfolk Coast: Bringing the outside in, Ocotillo, Ffarr, Nomad and the Bowerbird and a coffee shop. The five stores offer a range of homeware, clothing items and other treasures, each with a slightly different theme. The Billings are proud supporters of local and recycled products. Martin shared some thoughts on keeping things close to home...

Have you got any tips for someone who wants to keep their spending local?

Why do you think it’s important to shop local?

I’ve always been a big fan of Working Title Clothing in Norwich for their menswear but they have come out of the pandemic with a stronger offering than ever.

Shopping locally not only keeps your hard-earned pounds circulating in the community, but also ensures longevity,

Get to know the owners and staff in your local, independent shops. Not only does it make your shopping experience more pleasant, but you’ll get added value from knowing exactly who you are supporting.

What is your favourite producer or shop in Norfolk/Suffolk?

Life&Living

We have some amazing suppliers that have not once failed to keep us stocked up, both during the pandemic, but also through the extremely busy “staycation” summer!

Have you got any tips for someone who wants to keep their spending local? It is impossible to compete with big corporate companies and supermarkets, but what shopping locally does ensure is very often, local and generally, great quality produce. It also provides a local hub for the local community to catch up and chat. Should you not see an item you would like to purchase then just ask! By and large, a local retailer will bend over backwards to source a product for a customer.

What is your favourite producer or shop in Norfolk/Suffolk? We have some amazing suppliers that have not once failed to keep us stocked up, both during the pandemic, but also through the extremely busy “staycation” summer! During lockdown one, when the whole country was churning out banana breads, the shelves were bare of flour. Letheringsett Water Mill ensured our shelves were stocked with their amazing flour throughout, and Norfolk Coffee Company has never failed to keep both us and our customers extremely happy! With each of the local deliveries we receive, a chat and a catch up on the doorstep, or even over the phone when making orders, just goes to further build our little North Norfolk business community.

One year on, what has changed? I have to admit, I have slipped back into some old habits. Sometimes the supermarket is just easier, or more convenient. With a small amount of planning, however, I can keep my visits to a minimum. I try to plan a variety of meals around what is available in the veg shop. My root veg will keep for longer so will be used later in the week, other bits like tomatoes or peppers will be cooked up early in the week. Leftovers will be taken to work the next day, making for a cheap, healthy lifestyle. Now when I am looking to update my wardrobe, I may turn to Google for some inspiration, but nothing beats the option of being able to try on a product with help from a friendly-face. I am always more excited to unwrap a purchase from someone I know. There is no real right or wrong when it comes to our spending habits, but each time you step into a locally-owned shop, know that you are making friends, reducing your carbon footprint and supporting your community. 49

e p r o h t l u Sc Mill's

got taste!

Kate Morfoot, leading food and travel writer and founder of LoveToEatToTravel.com reviews the newest opening in Norfolk

The

word is out... the historic Sculthorpe Mill near Fakenham in Norfolk is open and what a treat it is! It’s a lovely warm summer’s evening in August and we feel like we’ve been transported to Italy as we're sipping our drinks by the river. Everyone had taken advantage of the good weather, the outside tables were packed full of happy souls, pleased to be able to enjoy the pleasant surroundings and their food and drinks by the water at this new hip destination pub. Inside, the bar was buzzing with people and teeming with lots of bar staff, it didn’t take long for us to get served. The Head Chef (Elliot Ketley) serves food that's all about taste and what I tasted was delicious. He only uses high quality

50

ingredients. The menu is ingredient-led and locally sourced, surely a commonsense formula for what makes food taste so good, and he gets it spot on. Sculthorpe Mill support local suppliers that include fisherman, Henry Randall who, at only 26, is one of the youngest fishermen currently fishing off Cromer and Weybourne; Hillside Nurseries in Toftwood for their tomatoes; Dexter beef and Herdwick lamb from Heath Farm in Great Massingham and ethically sourced Norfolk quail and poussin from High Field Farm. Must-tries include smoked sea trout with shaved fennel and apple, Cromer crab and avocado salad with pickled cucumber and wild sea bream with brown butter, samphire and capers. I chose the sea bream (£17.50); it was beautifully fresh and cooked to perfection with crispy skin. I had a little side order of vegetables. This little bowl was full of fresh tasting goodness with beautifully cooked carrots, peas and broad beans, which in fact, made the meal more special. Dishes from the land feature choices such as venison tartare with smoked egg yolk and raw cacao and grilled pork rib eye chop with broad beans; while those following a plant-based diet, can opt for a golden beetroot and black bean burger with caramelised onions or charred baby cauliflower with mint, pistachios and harissa. My husband had the very tasty Dexter rump steak (£21.50), grilled to his liking and very much enjoyed. Steak is often hard

to get right but this scored top marks in terms of flavour, how it was cooked and presented with fresh watercress. All hot dishes also passed the all-important hot plate test! Throughout the summer, the Garden Menu is served on the covered terrace surrounded by two crystal clear streams which run either side. I loved the three sweetcorn fritters, chipotle and lime mayo. It was quite a substantial starter for just £6. Other things to try are crudites, pea hummus, ranch dressing; mixed fish fryup with tartare sauce as a starter or main; golden beetroot and black bean burger with caramelized onions and pickles; Dexter Beef burger with caramelised onions, pickles and chips.

Food&Drink

The puddings are traditional and delicious. Choose from the chocolate orange torte, crème fraiche, lemon and elderflower posset with blueberries, a peach and almond tart with vanilla ice cream and the good old summer favourite, strawberries and cream. We did! Pudding fans take note, there’s one stand-out decadent pudding for both children and adults alike, the ever-nonfattening knickerbocker glory. Do save room for this firm favourite! Wine consultant Zeren Wilson is responsible for the exciting and unashamedly predominantly European wine list. Putting the spotlight on lesserknown producers and boutique wineries, the result is an eclectic and characterful selection, from British sparkling varietals through to robust reds and best-in-class whites as well as blush rosés and orange wines. There’s an East Anglian range of cask ales and craft beers from Moongazer and Barsham Breweries, cider from Whin Hill in Wells-next-the-Sea and other interesting UK brews including Apple Pie and Rhubarb cider from Turners in Kent. You’ll also find a great range of locally distilled artisan spirits, house-made cordials and freshly squeezed seasonal juices. To give you some background, Sculthorpe Mill is a water mill built in 1757 which sits atop of the River Wensum. Now the historic building, known as a

‘destination pub with rooms’ has been launched by siblings Siobhan and Caitriona Peyton, Norfolk residents of twenty years. Spending a six-figure sum, they've stylishly transformed this destination pub with six bedrooms with the help of acclaimed interior designer Shaun Clarkson. It seems the Peyton family have hospitality in their blood. They've worked their whole lives in some of London’s most innovative and ground-breaking restaurants and bars. Some fashionable-looking locals were adorning the front of the mill, taking drinks and bar meals overlooking the river on the new outdoor patio. To the back of the pub, there’s a charming flower-covered undercover pergola dining area and beyond a beautiful lawn and garden with lots of tables and pretty lights by the river.

"Central to our approach is a belief that a great country pub is accessible to all and that the pub itself is the soul of the building." - Siobhan Peyton, Owner

There are two cosy snug room areas to eat or drink inside. The public bar area provides an informal and buzzy atmosphere, then there’s private dining downstairs donning Dolce & Gabbana style wallpaper. The upstairs dining which you can also take for private parties has lots of character - there’s some serious wooden beams to view! It’s fabulous to know that Sculthorpe Mill is on the culinary map of Norfolk and I’m sure it'll become a firm favourite for many who enjoy a lovely pub atmosphere, beautiful surroundings and tasty food.

Things to know: • The shorter Garden Menu is served Monday and Tuesday (Prices from £11.50) and the full Restaurant Menu from Wednesday to Sunday (Prices from £7). Sunday Menu. It’s time

to accept that winter is definitely here. It’s cold, dark, damp, and if you’re anything like me you’d probably rather be somewhere warm and snuggly. But, with the various winter viruses floating around, now more than ever it is essential to keep your immune system strong and healthy, and regular exercise is a vital part of that. So, if you’re struggling to find your Winter Workout Mojo, here are my top tips... Musical motivation It’s amazing the effect music can have! Studies have shown that listening to high tempo music not only makes the exercise seem easier, but also actually raises your heart rate and increases the overall benefits of physical training. So put together a playlist of all your dancefloor favourites and get moving!

Find your Winter Workout Mojo Treat yourself! Never underestimate the power of some new kit. Come on, admit it, if you had some exquisite new workout gear or gadgets, you’d be itching to use them! Layers and layers... and layers While you’re treating yourself to your new workout wear, make sure you buy some warm but lightweight layers. Trying to work out when you’re freezing is miserable, and also more likely to result in injury, so wrap up warm and gradually lose the layers once you’re up to temperature. Make an appointment with yourself If you’re serious about making exercise a part of your routine, then make time for it like you would for anything else. Put it in your diary and make it non-negotiable. If you just try and fit it in somewhere during the week, the chances are that will never happen. Life will get in the way, so block some time out to dedicate to yourself. Buddy up! Find a friend with the same goals as yourself and workout together. Working out with a friend is great for motivation, not only during the workout, but also just to get you out of the house in the first place. Thinking of skipping your session today? You don’t want to let your workout buddy down do you?! Work(out) from home Still not keen on venturing out in the cold? One thing we can thank lockdown for is the booming online fitness business. Whether you’re into Pilates, HIIT, strength training, aerobics, indoor cycling, Zumba (or any of the 100s of other class formats), there are literally hundreds of online classes available. You can attend classes live online, or access replays whenever suits you. Many places will also offer you a trial class, or even a trial week for free! Look forward to coming home! There’s no doubt that once you’ve coaxed yourself out of the house and have done your workout, you will feel awesome. But what’s even better is having something to look forward to when you come back. Whatever

tickbox you are in you can create a look that is radiant, making you feel gorgeous on the outside as well as within. Putting in some extra care now can really help you as you move into the next stage of your life. The beauty regimes you are using in your 20’s are not necessarily the same as you should be using in your 40’s. As your skin changes and inevitably ages, you need to change your skin care routines along with it, helping you keep on looking healthy and youthful.

The 20s

Water! It may sound obvious but drinking water is very important in your 20’s. It is more than just keeping yourself hydrated, it will keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant. Making sure you are drinking enough water as part of your overall health and wellbeing will also lay the groundwork for decades to come. In addition to drinking enough, try not to shower or bath in hot water as this will dry out your skin. Moisturising is always important but ensure you are also moisturising your neck and hands as well as your face. Once again this is laying the groundwork for the future and is a routine you will inevitably continue throughout your life. It goes without saying that you need to look for a moisturiser which has an SPF factor. If you are dealing with breakouts, try a cleanser or spot treatment that has a boost of salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. These active ingredients will help get rid of acne-causing bacteria and calm an oily, acne-prone complexion.

The 30s

This is the time you will start to notice fine lines and signs of aging, so hydration and moisturisation are an even bigger focus. Investing in good quality moisturising products will help protect and revitalise your skin. Many experts also suggest that this is an age where you should be more conscious of what you are putting into your body. Everything from healthy foods to alcohol intake can have an effect on your skin’s health and appearance. Starting to incorporate anti-ageing serums into your skincare routine is also a good practice especially towards your mid-to-late 30’s.

The 40s

Deeper lines and more visible signs of aging will start to show once you are in your 40’s. Add to this many women will enter the perimenopause, putting your hormones into flux which can also have an effect on your skin. Keeping up with the ethos of the previous two decades, but adjusting to more antiageing focused skin care products will have a positive effect. Using a liquid foundation can help as these will be more hydrating to the skin. Powders can also highlight fine lines and wrinkles. We all love a G&T and a glass of wine, but cutting back in your 40’s can also have a positive effect on your overall skin health.

over 40s

Olay Total Effects Anti-Ageing 7in1 Fragrance Free Moisturiser 50ml, £9.99 www.boots.com

The 50s and beyond

Now is the time to have a serious look at the products you are using. Adjusting to something which is creamier and has a greater level of hydration will help as the skin's moisture levels drop. Typically there is a drastic drop in hormones due to menopause and collagen production slows dramatically. Consider getting facials on a regular basis to boost your skin's health.

U P H O L S T E RY E R A sustainable solution for your old furniture Julie Handforth-Doidge Proprietor / Interior designer at

JHD Interiors in Norwich

This month our resident interior design expert Julie Handforth-Doidge gives us some useful advice on how reupholstering your furniture can transform your home.

A reupholstered piece of furniture is the quickest and easiest way to restyle any room, adding instant colour and style. The range of fabrics available on the market today is vast and you can choose from thousands of fabrics in all types of colours and styles including traditional, classic or contemporary designs in the exact colour of your choice, adding a real personal touch to any room. Reupholstering your existing items of furniture can totally transform not only your furniture but also your home. Our experienced team of upholsterers will strip your sofa or chair right back to the original frame and then re-build and reupholster your chair or sofa in your choice of fabric. There are thousands of beautiful fabrics to choose from in our luxurious range. Reupholstering will give your old furniture a new lease of life and allow your old chairs to match your newest room revamp. We can recover any type or style of chair including dining chairs, sofas, armchairs, footstools and even make arm chair covers to match and protect your chairs. We can also provide sofa covers to either replace the ones you may currently have or remake and restyle new ones for your existing furniture. Many of our customers are happy with their existing sofas but just want to change the appearance and to do this sometimes all the furniture needs is to replace the legs or feet, however

choosing the correct sofa legs and feet for your furniture is essential. The type you require will depend on the weight of the furniture as well as the overall look that you are going for. At JHD Interiors we have an extensive range made from a variety of different materials, which include metal and wood. We also have a range of sofa legs with built in castor wheels which is a good concept if the furniture needs to be moved more frequently. We can supply and fit high quality products at a very competitive price

that will improve the appearance and practicality of any sofas or chairs. Often beautiful sofas and chairs are still in a good state of repair but become uncomfortable over the passing of time. If this is the case then it may well be worth considering having the cushions and seats re-stuffed. This can be done with a wide range of products such as foam, hollow fibre, and feather to bring it all back to life and provide the comfort you deserve. As part of our upholstery service we will also remove existing upholstery down to the bare wood. Once we have stripped the furniture back it is very likely that we will have to tighten and secure the frame and joints to strengthen the framework. In some cases we may need to replace webs, springs and seat cushions as well as replace all old padding and stuffing where required. One thing you can be assured of is that your chair or sofa will be brought back to life again while at the same time retaining the classic features of the original design. At JHD there is no pressure to buy anything. Our experienced design team will give you all the advice you need to ensure your furniture is restored in the most cost effective way so you can be confident you make the right decision. Whether your are looking to change your home or are a commercial customer and you would like to know more about our reupholstering service and would like to tap into our expertise then you are more than welcome to visit our showroom and workshops at Rackheath just on the outskirts of Norwich for advice. Garden November

with Tom

Tom Strowlger @garden_with_tom

November

is the last month of meteorological autumn and for us gardeners it’s time to tidy up our gardens in preparation for the cold months of winter. The days are now noticeably shorter and the temperatures have fallen however we can still enjoy the last of the golden colours of autumn. To create some floral colour in the garden at this time of year we can plant cyclamen and winter pansies into pots and borders. The garden will feel emptier at this time of year as trees drop their leaves and many plants shrivel back into dormancy. The empty space creates the perfect opportunity for us to get amongst borders and beds to dig the soil over and clear dead foliage away. We should put any loose twigs and leaves onto the compost, as they will create a leaf-mould

mulch that we can use next year. By digging over the bare top soil of beds and borders we revitalise it by exposing it to the rain, snow and frost over winter. November gives us a beautiful blanket of fallen leaves across our gardens and pathways, however clean up the leaves to prevent damage to the lawn grass and a patchy lawn next year. It’s best to rake the leaves up and either put them on the compost or into tightly knotted plastic bags with some pierced holes. In about 6 months’ time the bags of leaves will become your very own leaf-mould compost, perfect for mixing into soil on borders and beds. A November gardening day can also be spent sweeping out greenhouses, sheds and garages and brushing cobwebs and

leaves off fences, gates and walls. We can make the garden look very presentable by straightening the lawn edges and digging and raking over any bare soil. The gardening tools and lawnmower can be cleaned up, maintained and tidily stored away ready for springtime. We must remember to check the bonfire, as wildlife can make its home here for the forthcoming winter. The soul of the garden is the gardener and whilst we don’t quite have as many jobs as in the growing seasons we can do ourselves the world of good both in mind and body by being in the outdoors, so grab your coat and gloves and enjoy some garden days in November. ble Community Care has been in the same family for nearly four decades and now provides livein care services throughout the UK. Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably leads, either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers. Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information. Recently these questions have been asked of us...

Question: What is a Personal Independence Payment, how do you apply and how long does it take to receive funding if you are eligible?

Angela Gifford, Managing Director of Able Community Care answers your questions...

Question: I have two items of disability equipment from a relative who has died. A wheelchair and a Zimmer frame which I have offered to my local hospital, but they do not take them. Where can I donate them to? Answer: If you ask the question online of ‘where can I donate disability equipment to’ there are several charities, including those who send such equipment overseas, that will come up and be very pleased to receive them.

Question: An elderly relative who has mobility problems and no near neighbours, is unable to safely take her bin to the road for the bin men to collect. Is it possible that they can come down her path, take the bin, empty it, and replace it? Answer: You can apply for help putting your bin out for collection if you meet certain conditions, such as if you are disabled, have a medical condition or an injury. Contact your local Council either by phone or online and ask for Assisted Bin Collection. Question: Can I buy Christmas cards for specific charities online? Answer: Yes, Cards for Good Causes has a website which displays and enables card orders from dozens of charities and gives details when you choose a card how much of the proceeds goes to the charity themselves. Visit: www.cardsforcharity.co.uk

Answer: A Personal Independence Payment (often referred to as PIP) is a financial payment that helps towards the extra costs which can be caused by long term ill health or because of a personal disability. It is for individuals between the ages of 16 and 64 years of age. The Government website: www.gov.uk › pip › how-to-claim gives eligibility details and how to apply. The Citizens Advice Bureau can assist if you have difficulty. Currently the average time from application to receiving PIP is approx. 12 weeks.

important people

our lives

There is a wide range of insurance plans and policies that provide help when disaster strikes. Carl Lamb looks at the different types and explains their benefits.

The last

two years have shown us just how unpredictable life can be. None of us could have anticipated the extent to which the COVID virus has affected our lives. It’s been a salutary lesson, and we’re seeing an increased interest in insurance policies that kick in when we are unable to work. Life insurance is there for the absolute worst-case scenario: when you die, leaving your loved ones to carry on without you. It is the type of protection policy most commonly held by families. There are several factors to consider when looking at life insurance cover: not all cover is the same! You should first consider whether you want to hold the insurance for a fixed period of time – perhaps while your children are young, for example – or for the whole of your life. Whole of life policies are usually more expensive as they will always pay a claim (subject to terms and conditions), whenever you die, whereas a fixed term policy may never need to make a pay-out. If you want cover for yourself and a partner, you will also need to consider whether to take out two individual policies, or one joint policy. If you go for a joint policy, you will need to decide if you want the policy to pay out when the first partner dies, or on the second death. If it pays out on the first death, the surviving partner may wish to continue to have some kind of cover to protect family members, so will need to take out a further policy at that point. Most life insurance policies pay out a lump sum on your death, but there is another type of insurance that you can adopt, either on its own or in addition to your life cover. Family income benefit

In addition to life insurance, there are two primary types of insurance you can take out as an individual to protect your family’s finances if you become ill or injured. Income protection schemes and critical illness cover may sound similar, but they have different triggers and different benefits. Income protection is focused on your capacity to do your job. If you have an income protection policy and suffer an illness or injury (physical or mental) that makes it impossible for you to do your job, then the policy should provide support. There will normally be an initial waiting period before the cover kicks in which might perhaps be aligned with your employer’s sick pay policy. It will provide a regular monthly income – often a percentage of your normal salary – until you can return to work, retire, or if

work because of one of a prescribed list of illnesses/injuries, at a specified level of severity. The benefits of a critical illness policy are normally paid as a oneoff lump sum. With all insurances, cover will only be available if you continue to pay the required premiums. It’s important to understand the terms and conditions of the policy – the treatment of preexisting conditions, for example – so that you get the level of protection that you want for your family.

Inspiring Women

g n i r i spwomen n I Kim Grose Rachel Gilbert talks to another local inspirational woman.

Kim Grose

is constantly juggling a flurry of commitments. She balances her career in the police with being a mum, managing a holiday let and maintaining her house while her husband works overseas for six weeks at a time. "I just get on with it,” Kim said. “I find the time.” As if that wasn’t enough, one of Kim’s biggest projects right now is acting as

After having her daughter, Kim wanted to find her way back to sports, but decided rugby was too physical. She learned about Back to Netball, a scheme run by England Netball to encourage women to pick the sport up again. The scheme has helped more than 110,000 women try the sport. Kim eventually contacted England Netball about getting a coach — a group of seven mums looking to get active founded the base of what would become Beccles Netball Club. At the time, Kim was a single parent working full-time. Within a few years, Suffolk Netball reached out about forming a junior team within the club. Kim obtained her Level 2

Kim founded the club after having her daughter as a way to get active again. Kim joined the police when she was 23-years-old, looking for a change of pace. “I wanted something different, and to get out from behind a desk,” Kim said. She has now had a career spanning 24 years during which she has worn many different hats. In the past, Kim has worked on the drugs squad and in the criminal investigations department, but now she works in the safeguarding team, helping vulnerable children and victims of violent crime. She uses the netball team as a way of switching off. “It’s good to be part of a team separate from the police because you can let go of your day,” Kim said. Kim’s first sports love was rugby. After moving to Suffolk to join the police, she wanted to make friends so joined the Southwold Rugby Team. She quickly proved herself and joined the police team, eventually making the police national rugby squad. 66

Coaching certificate and now manages the two club teams, the Hawks and the Bluebirds, both of which play in the Lowestoft League. Kim never saw the club growing as big as it is now — with 25-30 members. When the club first started in 2010, they had very little funding. Some of the ladies are competitive when they hit the court, but some are more there for the social aspect. “They had a good long break for COVID, but I think they would be lost without it,” Kim said.

Netball has become a family affair with Kim’s daughter training with the club. Kim would love to make a difference through sport, and encourage more girls to get involved. She said the sport provides junior players with a safe space to let off steam. “The girls bring it out on the court,” Kim said. “They can just relax and be confident.” However, in encouraging her daughter, Kim said she has met her match — “I have created a mini me!” Kim pushes her daughter to stay optimistic and independent, and spends any days off cheering her mini me on at football practice. When thinking about who inspired her to become who she is today, Kim immediately thought of her Nan. Kim said she inspired her and pushed her to join the police and pursue her goals in rugby. Kim now hopes she can inspire other people to get involved in sports. “If you haven’t tried sports before, just take it one step at a time,” Kim said. “It can be daunting but keep it fun with tiny steps.” Sometimes Kim feels left out of social plans with friends, but the netball club provides her with such a fun social base that she doesn’t mind. If anything, Kim has big goals to continue to develop and grow the club in the future. When she retires, she hopes to continue to pursue coaching and teaching. As long as she can keep cramming everything in: “Life isn’t about living in the fast lane, it is about finding that good work/life balance,” Kim said. “If you enjoy something, you can fit it in and make it fun.” If you are interested in getting involved sessions are on a Thursday at Beccles sports centre; Junior (9-15 years) 1800-1900; Senior (15 years and up) 1900-2000.
