TO JULY'S PLACES&FACES
The Great outdoors is such a wonderful place to be and at this time of year it is such an easy decision to go outside. The weather is treating us well, especially after such a blustery start to the year. With plenty of events and festivals waiting in the wings you will soon find a use for the new sun hat you brought in the sale last October. The small act of getting out and enjoying a little of the good weather is so important. We must make sure we all do this responsibly, as I for one have been caught out too many times and forgotten to pack the factor 50. Just being outside for 10 minutes each day can boost our mental health as well as gaining some all important vitamin D. One of the big outdoors activities for me this
®
month will be enjoying many of the stunning walks we have in this beautiful part of the world. From countryside to city-scape, beach to broads we truly have the lot; and all with larger skies. Some of my favourites are in Dunwich Heath and the Blakeney to Cley walk. I am sure we have all noticed the scent of freshly lit BBQs wafting through the neighbourhoods on these bright summer evenings. However, you don't have to dash out for some emergency sausages to enjoy an al fresco feast. Just serve up your regular fare in your outdoor space. A mundane-midweek meal can soon be elevated when served in the garden. So what are you waiting for... let's all go outside. Andrew Hirst - EDITOR

Thor: Love & Thunder Released: 7 July Kids, get the popcorn out. Let me tell you the story of the Space Viking, Thor Odinson... The God of Thunder is back! Chris Hemsworth returns in Thor’s fourth solo outing with returning director, the wonderful Taika Waititi (director of Jojo Rabbit and Hunt for the Wilderpeople). What’s a 1500-year-old god to do when you’ve saved the world multiple times? Go on a journey of self-discovery of course. But this journey is cut short when Thor’s ex-girlfriend Jane Foster turns up wielding Thor’s old hammer Mjölnir! If that wasn’t enough, new baddie Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale, is intent on killing all the Gods. So, Thor and Jane, as well as returning characters Valkyrie and Korg, are going to have to team up and do the hero thing again. Also starring the Guardians of the Galaxy and Russell Crowe as Zeus, this latest Marvel outing is going to have all the spectacle of Thor: Ragnarok as well as the brilliant humour which set it apart from the films that came before.

Mrs Harris goes to Paris Released: 15 July Mrs Harris is a widowed cleaning lady in 1950s London. While cleaning she sees a couture Dior dress and falls in love with it and decides she wants to buy one herself. So, she saves up her money and travels to Paris and tries to buy one. This leads her on the adventure of a lifetime. She thought her life was almost over, that she had done everything she was going to do but Mrs Harris discovers she’s got so much more to give. It looks to be a heart-warming story that’ll have you leaving the cinema with a big smile on your face and your phone in hand, looking at trips to Paris.
NOPE Released: 22 July
The Railway Children Return Released: 15 July In this sequel to the beloved 1970 film, a group of children are evacuated from London during World War II to a Yorkshire village to live with strangers. While these evacuees try to adjust to their new life they encounter a young solider, who like them, is far from home and needs their help. This is sure to have fans of the previous film feeling nostalgic and has Jenny Agutter playing a grown-up role of her character from the 1970 film. If you’re looking a feelgood film, then you’re onto a winner with this one which also stars Sheridan Smith and John Bradley.
Jordan Peele brings us his third horror film. Get Out was a tough act to follow but he did it masterfully with the chilling Us. Now Peele is tackling aliens in NOPE. OJ and his sister Emerald find their Californian ranch has something hiding in the sky. The residents of this lonely gulch seem to be under threat from an extra-terrestrial presence but rather than just run or hide, OJ and Emerald see this as an opportunity. Thinking someone might pay a lot of money for footage of a spaceship, they put cameras all over their ranch in an attempt to get the ship on film. But of course, it’s not going to be that simple. Expect Peele to subvert your expectations and keep you guessing throughout.
Minions: The Rise of Gru Released: 1 July Do you like Minions? Doesn’t matter. You can’t escape them. They’re everywhere. And more Minions are coming. If I’m keeping track, this is the fifth film with the Minions and this goes back to the origins of their leader, Gru, and how he came to be the super-villain we found in the first Despicable Me movie. In The Rise of Gru, Gru is a little boy with big aspirations but when he’s kidnapped by other supervillains it’s up to those little yellow scamps to learn some new skills and try and rescue him. It’s ridiculous and it’s made to sell more Minions and make more millions but it’s good silly fun and try as you might, you won’t be able to stop giggling at the sheer stupidity of it all. 09

What's on Staying What we do in the shadows: Season 4
IN
with Adam Gunton
what's on the Telly
Coming Soon, BBC This hilarious mockumentary series follows the lives of four vampires on Staten Island, New York, who’ve lived together for hundreds of years. The last time we saw the undead housemates, Nandor was heading off to travel the world. Nadja and Lazlo were going to head back to England but Lazlo forced servant Guillermo to take his place so he could stay and look after the baby Colin Robinson who had just crawled out of his decomposed adult corpse. If you’re not caught up, then that probably sounds confusing but this show should be at the top of your watch list. It’s funny, brilliantly performed, fresh and inventive. Surprise guest stars have so far included Mark Hamill, Haley Joel Osment, Benedict Wong, Tilda Swinton, Wesley Snipes and more. I can’t wait to see who they rope in for season four!
Don' Misst
Stranger Things 4 Volume 2 1 July, Netflix The last two episodes of series four of Stranger Things are going to be epic. The last one is two and a half hours long! Might as well be a film! Will Eleven get her powers back? Will the group be able to stop Vecna? Will Joyce Byers ever catch a break and just have a nice normal time? Will we ever be able to get Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill out of our head? Who knows?! But savour these episodes because we’ve only got one more series after this!
The Longest Night 8 July, Netflix This Spanish thriller is focused on a psychiatric prison where a serial killer has been incarcerated. One night, a group of armed men turn up at the prison, cutting off all communications, intent on capturing the serial killer for some unknown reason. However, the prison director resists their threats and decides to stand his ground and use the assets and people available to him. Expect violence, action, and cliffhangers a plenty in this high-octane series.
The Baby 7 July, Sky Atlantic Here’s a deliciously dark, horror comedy for you. Natasha’s friends are all having babies and she can’t understand the appeal. But suddenly Natasha finds herself with a baby of her own to look after following a tragedy at the beach. However, this baby seems different. Where the baby goes, people die and it seems the baby is responsible. Poor Natasha finds herself at the mercy of this little terror. Where did the baby come from? What does it want? Natasha will have to answer these questions if she ever wants to get her life back.
The Terminal List 1 July, Prime Video Chris Pratt stars in this gritty action thriller. Pratt plays James Reece, who returns home after his entire platoon of Navy SEALs was ambushed during a covert mission. As he tries to settle back into normal life, Reece begins to question what happened and new evidence comes to light that says the ambush might not have been an accident. Queue some explosions, lots of guns and violence as Reece investigates what really happened and tries to deal with those responsible. The series is produced by Antonie Fuqua, the director of the incredible Training Day so expect good things.

Lucy Boydell
Pensthorpe
23 July-7 August, The Red Dot Gallery, Holt
Fakenham, Norfolk
Six new, impressive, upscale works by Lucy Boydell are set to go on display at The Red Dot Gallery in Holt. The exhibition entitled Freedom is the conclusion of unique encounters with red and white red stag, hare, wild boar, great bustard and capercaillie. These exceptional creatures have been observed in their natural surroundings at the peak of their vitality and virility. This extraordinary journey, two years in the making, encompasses photography, meeting owners, breeders and managers at the cutting edge of wildlife conservation and management, as well as exploring estates and parkland in areas of outstanding natural beauty and beholding their inhabitants. Months of observing and absorbing, before returning to the studio to translate into charcoal and chalk on paper; how light falls on hardened antler, sharpened beak, feathery bottoms, quivering whiskers and soulful energies, connection and understanding of spirit and the vigour of what it is to be alive.
It is said that fairies live at the bottom of the garden, which is the theme of Pensthorpe Natural Park’s imaginative new space featuring a bespoke sculpture by renowned artist, Robin Wight. Located under a canopy of trees in the former red squirrel enclosure, the Glade Sculpture Garden features evergreen trees, grasses harvested from the Millennium Garden, seasonal hellebores, ferns and wildflowers, which will be left to evolve naturally over time. Complemented by several sculptures, the 12ft fairy centrepiece was commissioned especially for the garden by Pensthorpe’s owners Bill and Deb Jordan, and has been created by artist Robin Wight, who is best known for his imaginative fairy trail at Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire. Alula, the fairy is accompanied by three giant dandelion sculptures, and other creative touches around the garden, including intricate mosaics handmade by experts Katie Green and Primrose Mosaics, and glass artwork by Jenny Pickford, adding colourful accents of green and blue.

Summer Holiday
Holt Festival
9-27 August
23-30 July
MTP and Theatre on the Coast in association with Sheringham Little Theatre, presents Summer Holiday. It’s nearly sixty years since Cliff Richard and the Shadows took off on a joyous jaunt across Europe in a Routemaster bus in the film Summer Holiday. The film is now a feel-good stage musical, with Don and his fellow London Transport bus mechanics journeying through Paris, the Alps, Italy and then Greece, and all to the strains of a hit-filled score featuring In the Country, Summer Holiday, I Could Easily Fall in Love with You, Bachelor Boy, Move It, Living Doll, The Young Ones and On the Beach. A real taste of Great British nostalgia!
Returning with another packed programme of out-standing entertainment and, as ever, they have an eclectic mix of the performing arts; from classical to world music, poetry, talks and comedy. There will also be a very special art exhibition featuring John Craxton and Pablo Picasso, which includes work by Lucian Freud and Alberto Giacometti. There will also be the annual Sir John Hurt and Sworders art prizes, with the addition of the new Charlotte Fraser ceramics prize. Highlights this year include the effervescent best selling author Marian Keyes, talking about her latest book, Again, Rachel. Antiques expert and teatime TV favourite from Antiques Road Trip and FLOG IT!, Paul Martin, tells us about his passion for beautiful furniture. Writer, poet and national treasure, Lemn Sissay reads from his Sunday Times bestselling memoir, My name is why. While world music lovers will be blown away by the infectious enthusiasm and joy of Guinean master musician N’famady Kouyaté and his full band line-up on the last night. Anwen Hurt, Artistic Director of the Holt Festival, says “We are very excited by the way the programme has come together and very much looking forward to welcoming everyone to a scintillating Holt Festival ’22”.

Festival essentials You have booked the tickets
and you are all ready to enjoy the event... but are you prepared? To fully enjoy a festival and get the most out of it you should make sure you have the essential kit to hand. Whether you are heading out for the day or camping out for a long weekender it is always best to go ready for anything the festival gods can throw at you. Here are a few items that should be on your essential kit list.
Your ticket Kinda obvious... but you would be amazed at how many people turn up to the gate without one. Then you just look like you are trying to blag your way in whilst stood next to the gent who claims to be Ed Sheeran's cat.
Cash Make sure you have enough money with you, digital or otherwise. Food and drink can be notoriously expensive at a festival so make sure you have budgeted enough. Also, and this goes without saying, keep it safe. Bum bags are not the style icon they once were, however a slight fashion faux pas is worth it when you have kept your money safe. You can also stash your phone in there along with anything else you want to keep with you.
Wellies You don't have to go for a classic pair of Hunter's, you can always opt for a good pair of sturdy hiking boots. Go for just a pair of flip flops and you might just regret it... a blister where it goes between your toes and sunburnt feet are the casualties.
Mobile phone & charger From calling home, finding which stage your friends are at and taking those all important festival selfies your phone will see a lot of action over the course of the event. Make sure you phone is charged before you go and invest in a portable charger to keep you powered up for the whole festival.
Baby wipes & toilet roll If you are camping over the weekend then a pack of baby wipes will feel like an en-suite. Toilet roll, this kinda explains itself.
Sun cream & medicines Don't get burnt. It is unpleasant, painful dangerous and causes premature aging of the skin... enough said. Another thing to remember is any medication you may need over your time at the event. Everything from over the counter stuff like hay-fever tablets and paracetamol to prescriptions such as inhalers and other medication you may be taking. Forgetting to take it with you can see you heading home prematurely.
Water bottle Don't get sunburnt and don't get dehydrated. Probably two of the most important things on the list. Get yourself a good quality refillable water bottle. Something that doesn't leak. You can always go the whole hog and get one of those military style ones which attaches to your belt. Keep your fluid intake up and not just the alcohol!
A home from home We are not suggesting you take the kitchen sink, but if you are camping over the weekend then you need to have the kit; tent and sleeping bag will be at the top of the list. Check out the restrictions on the festivals website to make sure your traditional Mongolian yurt you drunkbought on Ebay will be allowed in.
Clothes One of the most important bits of kit, even if you are just going for a day, is a rainproof jacket. The British weather is notoriously unpredictable. We have all seen the pictures of the mud at festivals so make sure you have the gear to cope with the environment. It is alright to be sporting a bikini top and Daisy Duke's but when the temperature drops in the evening and a light drizzle starts wafting in from the east you will start dreaming of that jumper Auntie Sharon knitted for you last Christmas. 17

Sunday 7th August
says Melanie Cook of www.VisitNorwich.co.uk African Choir of Norfolk
There’s
nothing like live street entertainment to add to a city’s ambience. So, it’s great news that this summer for its 9th year, Norwich Business Improvement District’s Head Out, Not Home free city programme of theatre, circus skills, music and more is back. Taking place between 24 July and 4 September, for summer ’22 Head Out, Not Home presents a record number of acts from theatrical performance, and circus skills to harpists, jazz, rockabilly, world, and folk music. Each Sunday, across five out of six locations in Norwich city, make time to stop for a moment to be entertained. For free! And because the programming is staggered you can see more than one act on any given afternoon between 12.45pm and 4.45pm. With a high percentage of local performers, as well as national and international acts including Covent Garden entertainment, there’s lots to whet your appetite. Here’s a small selection of what we can all look forward to.
Sunday 24 July Be wowed and laugh out loud all at the same time with Corey Pickett, a Covent Garden Street entertainer. Hugely popular wherever he goes, Corey delivers a standout performance, often on one wheel with a one man show which includes circus, music and physical theatre. Whilst locals Nebula Sun (a 5-piece band from Norwich championed by BBC Introducing) play jazz, soul and hip hop as well as West Africa music, meaning they have quite the following locally.
Sunday 31 July Limber up this weekend for an energetic performance from JS and the Lockerbillies. This group never fails to get everyone up and dancing. They rock, they roll, and the audience is there with them all the way! Want to get involved? Then this is the man for you - Bumbulum the Fool has travelled the world putting smiles on the faces of all who come across him. His street theatre includes comedy, mayhem and gravity defying improvisation with lots of audience participation too. 19
The Magpies are a relatively new band having formed in 2018. In 2020, their debut album The Tidings launched, with The Sunday Times saying “‘One of those effervescent albums you’d be happy to recommend to people who might not consider themselves folk fans”. Playing transatlantic neo-folk, this trio of Yorkshire women won’t leave you wanting. The High Points are another local band – a trio promising funky grooves, disco delights and everything else in between. Make sure you have your dancing shoes on!
Sunday 14th August Winner of the UK Street Performer of the Year, and having appeared regularly on TV, Matt Barnard is an allrounder. A compere, actor, musician and singer, Matt’s unique one-man show has travelled around the world, and now he’s here in Norwich. Whilst Gasper Nali has received millions of views playing his music on YouTube. From the small town of Nkhata Bay he creates the most amazing and danceable original Afro Beats possible. Again, another reason to dance. Bumbulum

Sunday 21 August Having been compared to David Bowie, Rufus Wainwright, Damon Albarn, Philip Larkin - Dan Foden brings us Slow Business with a gospel-tinged chamber pop. And hailing from North Wales, Ben Robertson is a fingerstyle guitarist with a repertoire of Celtic and European guitar arrangements. Beautiful.
Sunday 28 August The Bank Holiday weekend brings us an added day to relax – or perhaps get in some DIY. But whatever you’re up to make sure you get into Norwich to enjoy Strong Lady Productions with her powerful physical circus acts. Be prepared for some audience participation and quite a few lifts! Or Aphra

how about some classic show medleys and swing with the - very well dressed - Episcanarius Brass Quintet?
Sunday 4 September The final day of the programme and what better way to end than with a big dose of Ben Langley? A firm favourite with the Head Out, Not Home audience, Ben brings his own brand of hilarity to us once again. Then make sure you don’t go home until you’ve heard East Angles Brass Band. With their 6-piece band playing funky horn and percussion music, your spirits will be lifted for sure. As well as your toes. And your hands when you give them rapturous applause. Before you go be sure to check who is playing where, by visiting to Gasper Nali
www.visitnorwich.co.uk. The stages are located in Millennium Plain, St Gregory’s Green, Gentleman’s Walk, Westlegate (deck chairs available), Tombland and Riverside. I always think summer Sundays are rather special. And returning for another year I’m delighted the Plantation Garden has a host of outdoor music events and homemade afternoon teas. Running every Sunday from 19 June until 4 September, pop down for a very relaxing afternoon; a perfect way to spend some time with family and friends. Happy Sundays all! LIST
Finished reading your latest muse and feeling the effects of another book-hangover? The best way to get over your latest ex-book is to slip between the covers of your new love; so why not try one of these on for size.
by Bonnie Garmus Chemist, Elizabeth Zott, is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth would be the first to point out that there is no such thing. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans, the lonely, brilliant, Nobel-prize nominated grudgeholder who falls in love with – of all things – her mind. True chemistry results. Like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later, Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show, Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (‘combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride’) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo. Release date: Out Now

BEST BOOK
The Whalebone Theatre by Joanna Quinn
This utterly captivating book is a ravishing coming-of-age story set in the shadow of an oncoming war. The playful language takes us on an epic romp with a girl who elects to defy convention and find her own path through life. It is difficult not to fall in love with the characters and a plot which takes you a journey in all sorts of unexpected directions. Cristabel Seagrave has always wanted her life to be a story, but there are no girls in the books in her dusty family library. For an unwanted orphan who grows into an unmarriageable young woman, there is no place at all for her in a traditional English manor. But from the day that a whale washes up on the beach at the Chilcombe estate in Dorset, and twelveyear-old Cristabel plants her flag and claims it as her own, she is determined to do things differently. With her step-parents blithely distracted by their endless party guests, Cristabel and her siblings, Flossie and Digby, scratch together an education from the plays they read in their freezing attic, drunken conversations eavesdropped through oak-panelled doors, and the esoteric lessons of Maudie their maid. This is definite contender of my favourite book of the year. A book in which it is easy to escape from the everyday world. I finished this book in record time and felt the imediate urge to flip to page one and read it again, the sure fire sign of a book which will become a close friend. Release date: Out Now
Meg. Maggie. Melody. Different names for the same person, depending on the town, depending on the job. She's a con artist who erases herself to become whoever you need her to be. Nothing about her is real. She slides alongside you and tells you exactly what you need to hear, and by the time she's done, you've likely lost everything. The Lies I Tell is a twisted domestic thriller that dives deep into the psyches and motivations of two women and their unwavering quest to seek justice for the past and rewrite the future. Release date: 21 June
Love Marriage by Monica Ali Yasmin Ghorami has a lot to be grateful for: a loving family, a fledgling career in medicine, and a charming, handsome fiance, fellow doctor Joe Sangster. But as the wedding day draws closer and Yasmin’s parents get to know Joe’s firebrand feminist mother, both families must confront the unravelling of long-held secrets, lies and betrayals. Love Marriage is a story about who we are and how we love in today’s Britain – with all the complications and contradictions of life, desire, marriage and family. What starts as a captivating social comedy develops into a heart-breaking and gripping story of two cultures, two families and two people trying to understand one another. Release date: Out Now

15 Years Fuelling the World
Paddy & Scott’s, the Suffolk coffee firm with fuelling stations throughout the country, is marking 15 years in business this June, as it celebrates the most successful year in its history. A Suffolk coffee company with a mission to improve quality of life for coffee growing communities, Paddy & Scott’s was launched by Paddy Bishopp and Scott Russell back in 2007 as a hobby. Today, Paddy & Scott’s coffee is enjoyed by 1000s of people all over the world and is on course to have funded 1 million school meals by 2025. For 15 years Paddy & Scott’s has built a reputation for high energy, social impact and being a great company to work for and trade with. A number of global and local high-end organisations from hospitality, leisure and retail partner have helped the business realise its coffee ambitions. And, despite the tumultuous COVID years, the business is now stronger than ever with plenty of new partnerships, a digital focus and record growth this year - an 82% increase from pre-pandemic levels - with some of its coffee shops enjoying increased sales of 46.5%. “When I started this hobby back in 2007, I never thought we’d get to the teenage years or help change the lives of so many! In that time we’ve helped several team members become successful entrepreneurs and launch their own businesses, donated £££s to good causes and worked to transform a coffee growing community in Kenya,” comments founder, Scott Russell. www.paddyandscotts.shop

North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival
2-4 Market Row, Beccles, NR34 9HF www.relishcafe.co.uk
3 & 4 September, The Walled Garden, Holkham The North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival puts artisan producers at the heart of what it does. Now in its 13th year, the Festival, the largest food festival in Norfolk. The line up at The Cookery Theatre, always a highlight of the event, is shaping up with both new and established names appearing on the high tech stage, which is hosted by local foodie Andy Newman. Sara Matthews kicks off the entertainment on Saturday morning with ideas for a plant-based breakfast feast, while you can also expect a couple of decadent puddings from Scott Taylor of The Harper in Langham. Fran Hartshorne of The White Horse at Brancaster Staithe, works her magic with fish, Michael Chamberlain of The Victoria at Holkham, is preparing Estate venison, Abbi Saunt of Creake Abbey, always creates incredibly colourful dishes, and Gary Steward of The Hoste Arms in Burnham Market, is thinking small plates. Appearing on both days are the ever chirpy duo, festival chair and Wells chef Chris Coubrough and his great friend, legendary butcher Arthur Howell. Basically, you need to expect the unexpected with them - and it is always great fun and somewhat chaotic! The event, which attracts 12,000 visitors over the two days, has 65 artisan producers who sell everything from gin to chocolate, beer to chutney, and bread to cheese, with a real accent on quality. There are several pop up concessions selling dishes as diverse as mussels, wood fired pizzas, Thai dishes and artisan coffee, so you won’t go hungry, while the bar, run by Malt Coast brewery, is the place to hang out for a cool beer or Festival-inspired cocktail. www.northnorfolkfoodfestival.co.uk
If you fancy a culinary treat then look no further. This fabulous café in Beccles is the perfect place to meet up with friends. From breakfasts to afternoon teas there is plenty to enjoy. The husband and wife team, Pete and Michelle and their dedicated staff, ensure the dining experience is an enjoyable one, meaning you will leave happy and satisfied. Along with the regular items on the menu they also offer outside catering for events, hog roasts, take away and themed nights. The exceptional Relish breakfasts are served until 11.30pm; The Big Breakfast is worth the calories, although I did need to undo the belt a notch afterwards. Another recommendation is the sweet chilli chicken, roasted pepper and mozzarella panini; fillings like this make you realise what bread was invented for!

• 1 tsp salt • ½ tsp turmeric (optional) • 200g dairy free margarine • 2-4 Tbsp iced water • A little dairy free milk for glazing
METHOD: To make the filling, heat the oil in a large pan over a low heat. Add the potatoes, carrot, pepper and garlic; fry for 5 minutes, stirring often. Add the Indian Summer Chutney, tinned tomatoes, creamed coconut, chickpeas and peas. Bring the mixture up to a gentle simmer and cook, covered, for 20 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Stir the mixture often to avoid the mixture burning. Once cooked, season with a pinch of salt and pepper, allow to cool and then refrigerate until completely cold. To make the pastry place the flour, salt, 36
turmeric and margarine in a food processor until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. With the motor running, gradually add the iced water in a gentle trickle down the feed tube until the pastry combines. Refrigerate your ball of pastry wrapped in cling film for 30 minutes. Shape the pastry into six even balls, roll each ball until it becomes a 3mm thick disc on a floured surface. Place a couple of heaped spoonfuls of the filling into the middle of each disc. Be generous, but don’t overfill as your pastry may tear.
Brush a little water around the rim of the pastry and fold it over the filling to make a semi-circle. Press the edges together to seal. Trim with a knife and then crimp the edge with your finger. Cut a slit on top of the pastie for the steam to escape. Place the pasties on a couple of lined baking trays and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200˚C/gas mark 6. Brush each pasty with dairy-free milk, then bake for 30-40 minutes until golden. Set aside to cool for about 10 minutes before serving, or store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

The
Packhorse Inn is a wonderful traditional country inn. It sits at the heart of the community in the village of Moulton, just outside Newmarket, Suffolk. There are not many pubs in the area that can boast their Michelin Plate awarded 2011 and 2022 dining experience and offered at reasonable prices. Taking you back to a moment in time, and perhaps a scene from The Darling Buds of May with its pretty village Green, you will find the quintessential village’s 15th Century Packhorse Bridge. You are welcomed by not just friendly staff, but their wonderful packhorse that has been ingeniously hand-crafted from willow by Helen Colletta, taking pride of place at the entrance of the Inn. There are plenty of scenic country walks where guests can explore. The Three Churches walk that takes you through Moulton, Dalham and Gazeley, passing by each of the village churches along part of Icknield Way which is thought to be one of the oldest roads in Britain. The walk takes you through fields, woodland, country roads and by the River Kennett.

Go go
o c s e r Alf
Make the most of the weather and host better social gatherings in the garden. by Andrew Hirst
Summer
is finally here, and that can mean only one thing... getting outside. And what better way to enjoy the beautiful weather outside than having a summer feast and dining alfresco. While many of us will have been braving the chilly evenings with a decidedly British stiff upper lip (albeit a shivering one), the time is now right to enjoy the back-to-basics joys of dining outdoors. However the extreme heat we all saw on the 17 June is a reminder to us all that we need to be prepared for the heat by staying hydrated and avoid being burnt to a cinder. First up we need somewhere to sit. Whether this be a blanket on the ground or an investment in some good quality furniture, the right equipment here will make all the difference. The whimsy of a picnic blanket soon wears thin when you are over the age of 35 and the floor feels further away with every birthday. Keep an eye out for the sales and you will soon bag yourself a bargain set to keep you in the comfort you are accustomed to. The classic picnic table is the stalwart of the beer garden and, although not the design classic of the century, it is a hard wearing and cost effective option. Some of the cheaper plastic garden furniture has its benefits; it's lightweight and usually easy to store and maintain with no painting required and a wipe-clean ability. That said... it is plastic and it feels cheap and isn't really a great choice for the environment. Wooden furniture also sets off a garden, it just seems right. If space allows, we would also suggest going for non-folding furniture, if you have space for such a luxury. Anyone who has sat on a folding garden chair will understand why. And if you are a family of four, definitely invest for a table for at least six people. Yes, you may end up with chairs that are seldom used but when it comes to entertaining you will always need that extra capacity. Plus, a larger table is also handy when you are dining out and have a help-yourself
spread, a must of any self-respecting barbecue. Which brings us nicely to the star of any outdoor cooking... the barbecue, and this is where things really get... heated. There, what feels like, an endless selection of barbecues to choose from, how ever they all fall into two distinct camps; coal or gas? Gas obviously has its benefits. It is cleaner, quicker, and you have more control over cooking temperature. But there is a lot to be said for the traditional charcoal barbecue, however it is true they have a lot on cons. Firstly, it's messy, from beginning to end. Secondly, you can end up waiting half an hour for the coals to get hot and then see them fizzle out before you've burnt a single burger. And thirdly, even if you do have a raging heat, to a novice it is almost impossible to tame the burning power of a belligerent barbecue and you end up with charred food that is sometimes dangerously undercooked in the middle. But, for me, that's what it is all about. Cooking on a barbecue is all about the ancient art of cooking over fire. Heck, there are even top restaurants doing just that. The Gunton Arms for example; if you haven't tried their rib of beef to share from the Elk Room fire you haven't lived. If a few sausages get cremated along the way, then so be it. In my humble opinion you simply can't beat the flavour and it is well
worth all of the hassles listed above. Regardless of your choice of fuel get the largest barbecue you feel you need. Multiple cooking levels enable the garden chef to strategically shift food around to keep it piping hot and manage cooking times. Also, if you have any family members or guests who have dietary needs, simply use a baking tray and seperate tongs to keep the regular meat away from vegetarian or vegan options. So you have somewhere to sit and something to cook on, but is the rest of your outdoor space ready to receive your guests? Spend time weeding and trimming. It will all feel worth it when you are sat back with a nice glass of Pimms admiring all of your hard work. Is the patio up to scratch? Give it a clean. Always a job that ends up at the bottom of the list, but once again a job that is so satisfying to have ticked off. When you have spruced up the garden summer evenings always feel that little bit more special with a little lighting. My advice is to go with a mixture of solar and wired options. Larger wired spot lights will help make the space more usable at night, whilst complimenting these with some solar powered options. Some solar fairy lights dropped over a pergola can make a space feel extra special. Be aware of the growth of the plants in the garden at this time of year as a badly placed solar panel can soon be hidden in the leaves and will not effectively charge. With the scene set our guests also need to have a little attention. Make sure there is some shade. Gallons of sun cream is great, but we don't want anyone getting sunstroke. Hats and hydration are key. Keep the drinks flowing; not just the alcohol, make sure you have plenty of refillable water bottle on hand. Fill them up add a little ice and allocate one per guest. You can always head inside if the heat gets too much. The main thing to remember is to have fun and enjoy the great outdoors. 43

Naeture’s Peac The Great Outdoors: why getting outdoors is so good for our mental health by Niobe Shaw
The
UK’s wellness industry is worth billions of pounds, with thousands of selfcare products on the market. Each come with promises to help with sleep, stress or happiness. But here’s a secret - getting outdoors can do just that, with no price tag attached. The naturalist John Muir knew it. Over a century ago, he wrote, “Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of autumn.” More recently, during the pandemic, the outdoors became a source of solace and a space to socialise. More and more of us are noticing nature’s role in our wellbeing, and science backs this up. Here are just a few ways getting outdoors can help us. Exercising outside has long been recommended as a great way to improve both physical and mental health. It’s considered more effective for treating mild depression than antidepressants! Exercise releases endorphins, boosting your mood. Plus, the rhythm of walking, running or cycling can be meditative, helping your mind to switch off. Evidence now suggests that simply getting outside - whether exercising or not - is a fast way to help increase happiness. In fact, it’s been shown that spending just five minutes among the trees can have

immediate psychological benefits. So no matter how busy you find yourself, getting out into nature for a few minutes a day is important for your health. We know that getting vitamin D from sunlight helps keep our immune system strong and our bones healthy. Not only that, but it can boost our mood. Mental health professionals have found that getting outdoors often reduces feelings of stress or anger. It can even develop our confidence and self-esteem. Spending time outdoors suppresses the production of melatonin (the chemical that makes us feel tired). If you ever feel drowsy during the day, a few minutes outside will help to keep you awake and alert. In turn, that makes it easier to drop off at night and to maintain a regular sleeping pattern. Good sleep health promotes a happier mind. It’s all connected! Countless studies have proven how getting outdoors and surrounding ourselves in nature can have positive effects on our wellbeing. The benefits are so clear, in fact, that ‘eco-therapy’ is now regularly prescribed to support those struggling with their mental health. Often this is with a trained professional therapist, but we can replicate it ourselves. It’s simple, really. Just consider how getting outside can become part of your routine. It might be as easy as having a daily cuppa in your garden, or you might be walking your pooch round the block
each morning anyway. No garden and no dog? Not to worry. There are still plenty of ways to enjoy nature’s psychological boosts. Summer is well and truly here, so make the most of it. Invite your friends out for picnics rather than meeting at a cafe or the cinema so that you can enjoy the sunshine, snacks and surroundings together in equal measure. You could also try out different outdoor classes or sports. With the coast, broads and beautiful countryside on our doorsteps, there are plenty of opportunities to take part in paddleboarding, sailing, walking or cycling groups if you don’t fancy going out on your own. Gardening boasts a number of mental and physical health benefits, including real sense of achievement! If you don’t have a garden yourself, consider signing up for an allotment if you have the time, or volunteer at a local community garden. This is a great way to meet neighbours, and socialising is great for our wellbeing too, so a community garden is win-win! Many of us work full-time, and if your job is based indoors, it isn’t always easy to get outside during the day. Consider parking or alighting the bus further away from the office, and opt for a breath of fresh air at lunchtime by either heading for a short walk or taking your food or a book to a bench outside. It’ll do wonders for your productivity levels; evidence shows that getting outdoors improves working memory and our brain’s ability to pick out important stimuli from less-important ones. Finally, do what you can to bring the outside inside. Move your table or desk closer to the window so you can see trees and plants. Why not purchase a few indoor plants? These have a calming effect, and help purify the air too. With the sunshine and long summer days finally here, being outside comes more easily. Get into good habits now, so that when autumn and winter roll around again, you’re in the routine of embracing nature and reaping its psychological benefits. Just make sure you’re wearing a few extra jumpers by then!
you ask most people if they are a creature of habit, many will say, “Yes”, but some will say, “Absolutely not.” These “Absolutely not.” people are not deliberately telling an untruth, but research (Wood. W. 2019) has shown that neurologically we all have habits, and we all use them all the time, intentionally and below our awareness.
I ask my clients to start slowly with very small and achievable goals and targets, change one or two things at a time. We may have developed some of these habits consciously, but most of these habits have crept up on us via our experiences and conditioning. Existing good habits may include saying, “Thank you”, locking the doors at night, kissing your loved ones, not snacking, planning, and completing tasks. Existing good and bad habits are subjective, but these bad habits can be removed, and good habits can replace them.
There are the dreaded ‘desired’ but not yet achieved habits, which can include exercise more, eat less, go to bed on time, socialise more, be tidier, spend less money, be more acceptant of others etc... These are ‘dreaded’ desires because historically people have commonly thought that these ‘desired’ habits are often difficult to start and even more difficult to maintain. This is not the case, and a leopard can change its spots. We all have hereditary and genetically innate foundations, but this ‘hardwiring’ is not that huge regarding developing who we ultimately become, in fact it is our conditioning as we grow that is dominant in forming our habits. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imagining (FMRI) scans can tell us a lot about what happens when we change from a bad habit to a good habit and recent research has shown what happens is relatively simple. In theory its easily explained, we close neurological pathways which transmit bad habits and open the neurological pathways which transmit good habits. That sounds easy and, in some ways, it is not complicated, but it takes time, patience and persistence. Repeat something 66 times for 66 days and a neurological pathway opens, and a new habit opens. Some people use the 1% rule, so they repeat things 100 times. People often say, “I just don’t have the discipline or willpower.” The new scientific proof aided by FMRI scans no longer allows this excuse because we can train ourselves by changing habits

Zoe Dunford
is something of a rarity - a female skipper in North Norfolk. The 50-year-old started up her own sailing company, Sail North Norfolk, this summer, aiming to show both locals and holiday makers the many splendours of this part of the county’s ever changing coastline. Her 15ft boat, a Stiffkey Cockle, was made locally and is called Selkie, the Celtic name for a seal. It has an electric motor but Zoe, who lives near Aylsham, loves to simply use the sail to navigate the creeks and coastal waters. ‘I sail out of Blakeney, Morston and Cley and we go through and over the salt marshes. You have to know your tides and be able to follow the channels and pick your way through,’ she explains. Selkie holds just four passengers so everyone is guaranteed a very personal experience, with Zoe able to tailor trips to whatever people fancy. She says: ‘We can go wild swimming, to a remote beach, through the creeks to try and spot seals or we can just potter about, maybe stopping for a coffee in Blakeney. I love the custard tarts in Buoy coffee house!’ She adds: ‘We can also just go one way,

I like to create trips to what people are interested in and if they fancy something a bit more adventurous or not - but if the winds gets up, it can become a real adventure!’ She says: ‘I can plan really special trips, if someone wants to propose or celebrate a special birthday and I hook up local supplies for food, like the Thornham Oyster Company and Crate picnics.’ Zoe grew up in London, where she attended a children’s club at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, and as a teenager joined a local rowing club, enabling her to spend time on the water. ‘I have always sought out the water,’ she says. ‘I just love it out there.’ During a career in wildlife film production, she pursued her love of the sea by researching films about sharks in the Mediterranean and shark

While working at the BBC’s Natural History Unit in Bristol, she learned about a shark research project in the Bahamas. After learning to dive in Bovisand, Plymouth, in 1995, she volunteered at the project helping to gather data about the home ranges and nursery grounds of lemon and tiger sharks. Her work brought her to Norfolk in the late 1990s where she married journalist Simon and they have a teenage daughter called Rosa. She learnt to sail in the county when she had a regular ‘have a go’ column in a local boating magazine where she tried out numerous waterbased activities from kite surfing to being winched onto a tanker in the North Sea during a RAF Search and Rescue helicopter training exercise. She was quickly hooked and is now often spotted paddle boarding, wild swimming, canoeing - anything and

everything involving water. She says: ‘Sailing keeps me coming back for more, because it’s not easy and there’s always something new to learn - you have to understand the wind, know how to navigate and understand your landscape.’ She worked for the Wells-based East Coast Exploration Co, a well known sailing company, for several years so is experienced at skippering various vessels and, as well as being a qualified skipper, is also a RYA instructor so can teach you how to sail. The trips on Selkie last for two to three hours and are dependent on tide times, with some of the nicest being sunset tours. They are priced from £25 per hour per person and dogs are not allowed. Passengers are welcome to bring picnics, swim gear and do need an open mind. ‘We might plan one adventure and end up on another,’ Zoe laughs. She provides great insight into the local wildlife and coastline, spotting spoonbills, hearing the cry of a curlew or pointing out a local landmark on shore. Her passion is infectious and her easy going personality makes the trips something special. Certainly being out of the tidal marshes is a magical experience. It can be eerily quiet, with not a breath of wind, then, just a few minutes later, you are charging along, very much at one with nature! Apart from running Sail North Norfolk, Zoe also hires out two beach huts at Wells beach, has a pretty holiday home called Sea Pink in the town and a shepherd's hut! www.staynextthesea.co.uk

more fresh flowers we will enjoy. If you notice any tired perennial plant leaves then cut them back as it will keep borders nice and tidy. If plants are being hindered by pests, like greenfly and aphids, then early treatment is important to ensure the plant remains healthy and strong for the remainder of summertime. We should be training the new growth of our climbing plants such as clematis, jasmine and honeysuckle, intertwining the new growth into trellis, onto a frame of a wall or fence. We can snip off the stringy shoots of the Wisteria to keep the rapid growth under control and prevent a tangled display. To keep our lawn grass healthy and strong during hot spells we should be watering it once a week and cutting it on the highest setting to allow the grass to retain its green

The
middle month of meteorological summer is with us. July, with its long heady days and hot sun turning our garden into a space for outdoor living. We can fully embrace our green space and all it has to offer at this time of year. We can invite our friends and family over for a BBQ to enjoy the green and floral surroundings, by sharing our work in the garden with others we will feel a real sense of achievement. It is the time for us to delight in the magic of dahlia, begonia, petunia, aster, salvia, rudbeckia, zinnia, verbena, delphinium, pansy, geranium and lobelia, to name but a few. Many of our plants will be peaking this month so we should be sure to keep them regularly watered, ideally at dusk and using mulch around the plants to retain moisture. The pots, tubs and planters will need extra care as they can dry out within one day of hot weather. We should water at the base of plants to ensure water reaches the roots rather than onto foliage. An excellent way to save water is to have a water butt; recycling rainfall into our gardens during dry spells. We should walk around our garden most days to deadhead plants of spent flowers. The process of dead-heading will encourage new flowers and lengthen the flowering season that little bit more. In particular, sweet peas and roses require constant deadheading to get the very best flowering results. Also lupins can be pruned of their spent flowers to encourage new flowers with a second flush. The more we deadhead the

If we have ants nesting in our lawn, then we should sweep away the mounds of soil into the lawn before cutting. July is a holidaying month, the garden furniture is out and we can hopefully dine amongst our favourite plants and flowers. Our garden is the perfect space to relax and re-energise and with a little general maintenance we can enjoy it late into the warm evenings. t c e f r e P plants to enjoy in your conservatory
As
we head into the warmer months of the year we all start to use our outdoor spaces to a greater extent. Having spent plenty of time spent tending the garden and caring for our plants outside, sometimes the indoor plants can take a bit of a back seat. It might be time for you to revitalise the plants in conservatory or orangery; here are a few suggestions of what can work well in these climates. Conservatories often receive large amounts of sun and can become very warm in the summer as well as be being a lot cooler in the winter. They can also become dry and have low levels of humidity. Some plants may suit this, however others will appreciate more humid surroundings. Therefore, it’s useful to position those plants on humidity trays that are filled with water and pebbles, as well as misting leaves or investing in a humidifier. With this in mind you must make sure to keep an eye on the conditions to avoid any damage to your precious indoor plants.
African fig tree (ficus cyathistipula) Another hardy and undemanding plant is the African fig tree. The wonderful long-rounded leaves of this upright fig can add some height to the room. Although they are suitable for conservatories they can also be used in North facing positions with a lesser light. Cacti & Succulents
String of pearls (senecio rowleyanus) A plant which needs a good amount of light for it to achieve its best. It is a succulent so it is drought tolerant and doesn't need a huge amount of watering. Let the soil dry out before rewatering; if the pearls begin to shrivel then this is a sign it needs more water.
Placed in the warm and sunny spots of your conservatory cacti and succulents will thrive. They are able to tolerate the extreme heat in the summer and can withstand the colder temperatures a glass room has in the winter. Their super low maintenance means you can enjoy their beauty with minimal effort... a win win all round.
Bird of Paradise (strelitzia reginae) A beautiful plant which has a very distinctive look; the colourful flowers are a definite conversation starter and will bring a touch of the tropics to your garden room. Lots of exposure to sunlight will help it to flower and a welldrained soil, which is kept moist, will see your bird of paradise thrive. 54
Cape primroses (streptocarpus)
A fabulous flowering favourite, they are well suited to a conservatory, however they will also need partial shade and a good amount of ventilation. The trumpet shaped blooms can be found in various colours including purple, pink, red and white, as well as bicolours too.

Julie
Bremner looked up at Norwich castle and saw the rainbow flag flying over the hundreds of people that had attended the inaugural Norwich Pride. Reflecting back on years of organising Norwich Pride in various capacities, Julie recalled this as her proudest moment. “It never ceases to amaze me when I see the impact,” Julie said. “I have a passion for putting in the time to create that impact.” Julie is one of the founders of Norwich Pride and has worked on the event ever since the first one in 2009. She is a civil servant by day, while sitting as a trustee and treasurer for Pride and is the chair of trustees for Educate and Celebrate. She also helped found Proud Canaries, the LGBT fan group of Norwich City Football Club. “My approach to life is to try to change the world, and have fun on the way,” Julie said. Julie grew up in Hertfordshire in the shadow of Section 28, a series of Thatcherite laws prohibiting the promotion of homosexuality in Britain. The legislation was in place from 1988-2003.

Rachel Gilbert meets one of Norwich Prides founders Julie Bremner.
Coming from an aspirational, working class background and left-wing household, Julie always gravitated towards activism. She was the first in her family to attend university after receiving a grant to study environmental sciences at UEA. Julie moved to Norfolk in the 80s to attend UEA. She said the move was liberating and she was able to be herself and engage in projects she

was passionate about. Julie became involved in ACT UP, the international organisation that fought to end the AIDS pandemic. “I want to create the world we want to live in and enjoy,” Julie said. “This drew me towards activism.” Julie has been involved in countless marches, protests and projects for social progress in various forms, all leading her to found Norwich Pride. She wanted to turn Norwich rainbow for a day, making everyone feel safe and welcome. Each year, Norwich Pride has grown and evolved, increasing from a few hundred attendees to tens of thousands in recent years. Throughout the evolution of the event, it has remained free and accessible to all. However, the process of hosting such an event hasn’t always been easy.
Julie and the Pride team have had push back and nasty comments. “We just have to wear those damaging insults as a badge of honour,” Julie said. “So many people benefit from Pride and it can be life-saving.” Although she has helped deliver Norwich Pride since helping found it in 2009, Julie is still as enthusiastic as ever. Having helped turn it into a charity in 2019, she now takes more of an inward facing role as Treasurer and Trustee. Julie is also the Chair of Trustees for Educate & Celebrate. Educate and Celebrate provides guidance to schools on how to be more LGBT-friendly. It offers webinars and brings language and understanding to schools, making them more welcoming to the Queer community. “It often surprises me how much work there still is to do,” Julie said. Julie advised anyone looking to make a difference to just get stuck in. She recommended evaluating what you want to achieve, what time you have to give and what skill set you can contribute to a cause. She said activism is also a learning opportunity. For Julie, she challenges herself by immersing herself in new environments and learning scenarios. She has taken up sailing alongside her ongoing projects. However, she will still be loud and proud at pride this year. Norwich Pride expects in the region of 10,000 attendees in 2022. There will be stalls, an art exhibition, a makers’ market, Theatre Street will close for a party and the annual march will depart from City Hall. The event has grown and evolved a lot since Julie helped found Norwich Pride in 2009, something she is very proud of. However, it is the principle of the day that makes her proudest of all. “It isn’t always about being bigger. I want it to be free, accessible and for everyone to have a good time.”

Growing
up, I didn’t really know that queer people existed. There weren’t any “out” figures in my life, and casual homophobia was thrown around by family and friends. I didn’t realise I was gay until I was 17, and I certainly didn’t come to terms with it until years later. I thought something was wrong with me and that I should be hiding who I was. Looking back at my classmates from school there were several of us that identified as LGBTQ+ but none of us came out until much later. Representation matters. If young queer people don’t feel they have a safe space, or see themselves reflected in the media, they won’t feel comfortable living as their authentic selves. Pride month and accompanying events are vital to helping people accept who they are and celebrating
Not only is pride a celebratory event, it is a time to reflect and remember the work that has been done so people can live their true lives. identity. Pride is empowering to those in attendance and can give others the courage to be themselves. Not only is pride a celebratory event, it is a time to reflect and remember the work that has been done so people can live their true lives. June Pride Month marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots where LGBTQ+ protesters stood up against police raids on the Stonewall Inn in Lower Manhattan on 28 June 1969. It is also a time to think of the work still to be done. More than 70 countries still have laws criminalising homosexuality. Every Pride event, no matter how big or small, will have an impact. It may be on an individual level, or be steps towards bigger changes. 58
Here are some ways you can support Pride.
Attend Pride
This one seems like a bit of a nobrainer! Attend pride and celebrate LGBTQ+ identity — as a member of the community, or as an ally. Pride events are a chance for queer people to reclaim rights and freedoms in public spaces they may have been excluded from. Straight people are more than welcome at Pride, just consider how you can be a good ally. Support the community beyond the party atmosphere of Pride and stand up against hate if it is safe to do so.
Educate yourself
Pride is a huge, celebratory party everyone should enjoy. However, don’t enjoy the party without knowing why you’re there. LGBTQ+ people aren’t there for your entertainment once a year. Research the history of Pride and the Stonewall Riots. Pride is rooted in protest and resistance, although it is a celebration, recognise that there is so much work still to be done. It is important to have fun at Pride, but remember it isn’t just an occasion to get drunk.
Consider LGBTQ+ policies in your workplace
Diverse workplaces are proven to be more profitable and productive. Consider the LGBTQ+ experience in your workplace — are they offered the same benefits as straight employees with regards to parental leave and adoption leave? Can you foster a gender neutral environment by using gender neutral pronouns and bathrooms? Make sure all employees are educated on the diversity policies

stay fully free and accessible to all. Julie Bremner is one of the founders of Norwich Pride and has been involved with the event every year since. She said: “It isn’t always about being bigger. I want it to be free, accessible and for everyone to have a good time.” This year Norwich Pride will be closing down Theatre Street for an all-day street party. There will be a maker’s market in Chantry Place, an art exhibition at Assembly House and the Pride Parade will leave City Hall at 13.00. Chapelfield Gardens will have entertainment, stalls and the Pride Show all afternoon and evening. One of Julie’s favourite moments at Norwich Pride each year is seeing the rainbow flag raised above Norwich Castle. Her goal in founding Pride was to turn Norwich rainbow. “It never ceases to amaze me when
and consider whether there is a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ staff. Remember you may not know if there are members of the queer community on staff if they aren’t comfortable coming out; it isn’t your job to force anyone to come out, but rather create a safe environment for everyone.
Volunteer or Donate
Photo: Roo Pitt
If you have the capacity to do so, consider volunteering or donating to LGBTQ+ charities or safe havens. Organisations such as The Albert Kennedy Trust (AKT) help homeless LGBTQ+ young people. According to the their website, 24% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ+, and 77% of them believe coming out to parents was a factor. In East Anglia, the Norfolk LGBTQ+ project is a charity offering support, information and advice. You could also see how you can get involved in supporting a safe Pride event. However you are celebrating Pride this year, remember that this is a time for reflection and progress. We all love a bit of rainbow merch, but consider whether this actually supports the community or acts as virtue signalling. Do your best to educate yourself and make sure you are a welcoming ally to LGBTQ+ people in your life.
I see the impact,” Julie said. “I have a passion for putting in the time to create that impact.” “I am really looking forward to celebrating our fabulously diverse LGBTQIA+ community with everyone in 2022 - back on the streets, marching together and being loud and proud,” Julie said. “Norwich Pride will always be a protest to me; we try to stay relevant by ensuring we reflect the issues we face as we continue to strive for equality. Raising the voices of trans people and empowering queer people of colour will always be central to our work. We try and ensure this is reflected in the event we organise and hope everyone will join us in Norwich on Saturday 30 July 2022.” Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Pride will take place on 20 August in Kings Lynn. The annual event promises to be bigger and better than ever with live entertainment, stalls and a parade. The event will culminate with Pride in the Park, a party and celebration of the LGBTQ+ community in West Norfolk. Wristbands are now on sale in several locations, with each purchase directly supporting the cost of hosting Pride events. Great Yarmouth Pride’s “One World, One Heart, One Pride” event will take place on Saturday 3 September. "This year the parade will make its way along the seafront before turning up through the town transforming Great Yarmouth into a glorious sea of colour,” organisers said. The parade will culminate with a ticketed, staged event. This will pay tribute to to Kevin Cantwell who died earlier this year and was known for his drag act Alexis St Clair. The event will feature acts, food stalls and bars.

Thanks
to social media we are now, more than ever, bombarded with health and fitness advice. Some of which is useful information provided by qualified professionals and some of which is not so reliable! Here are a few of the common myths I regularly come across. No pain... no gain! I wince whenever I hear this one! While it is true that you may need to push yourself outside your comfort zone to achieve your goals, physical pain is your body warning you that something is wrong! It’s normal for your muscles to ache after exercising and for you to ‘feel the burn’, but that is it! Never be tempted to push through when something doesn’t feel right; listen to your body. Exercising a particular body part will burn fat in that area. We’ve all seen those teleshopping ads for the ‘Super-Ab crunch extreme’ that promises a flat tummy by doing a ridiculous amount of crunches every day. But does this approach work? The short answer is... no. With the exception of surgical intervention, it is not possible to choose where we lose fat from. Fat loss occurs when we expend more energy (calories) than we consume. The body makes up the shortfall from stored energy (fat) within the body. Everyone is different and while some people may easily lose fat from their
Fitness Health & Fitness
legs, other people may find they lose it from their chest or tummy first. Focusing exercises on one area, can help to build muscle, but it won’t ‘burn’ fat in that particular area.
Myths
If you don’t ache after a workout, you haven’t worked hard enough! It’s quite normal to ache 48hrs or so after a workout. When we ache and feel stiff after a workout it is because we have really challenged our muscles and the soreness known as DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) is a normal part of the growth and repair process. You are most likely to feel this way when you try new exercises or when you use heavier weights. However, feeling stiff
The core is

This could result in illness and injury. So yes, while DOMS is normal sometimes, you definitely shouldn’t be feeling it all the time and a lack of that post-workout ache does not mean your session was ineffective. Crunches are the best way to build a strong core. Absolutely not. In fact doing endless crunches and nothing else is a good way to cause problems! Your core is the corset of muscles surrounding your torso from ribs to pelvis, not just the six pack muscles on your tummy. The core is arguably the most important area in your body for strength and stability, supporting us in many important functions. Think about it, your core does not just flex your body forwards (as in a crunch), it rotates, side bends and back
Life&Living
Chantel Heath
bends. So in order to build a strong core we need to do exercises that work in all of these planes of motion. Doing lots of crunching exercises may help to strengthen those six pack muscles, but only doing those exercises will lead to imbalances in your core which is likely to have a knock on effect in your posture, as well as potentially resulting in issues with your lower back and pelvis. Carbs are bad and fat will make you fat. No... just no. Carbs are essential for so many functions in your body. What is important is that we eat them in appropriate serving sizes — which most people do not. Next time you eat something like pasta or rice, rather than cooking by eye, instead cook the recommended size shown on the packet; you might get a bit of a surprise! In my experience most people eat at least twice the recommended serving size, which means double the calories. But will fat make you fat? What causes you to gain body fat is eating more calories than your body needs on a daily basis, no matter whether those calories come from carbohydrates, fats or protein. However at nine calories per gram, fat does contain more than twice the amount of calories per gram than carbohydrates or protein. So in essence no... fat in itself will not automatically ‘make you fat’. However, because fat is very calorie dense we need to moderate our serving sizes to ensure we don’t take in more calories than our bodies need. When we consume excess calories our body will ultimately store them as fat. 61
