Based on the 1970 classic children’s novel by Judy Blume, this is the ultimate coming-of-age story. Margaret Simon (Abby Ryder Fortson), aged 11, is just desperate to be normal. She finds her life changing as her family moves from New York City to suburban New Jersey. Margaret’s mother (Rachel McAdams) is Christian, and her father (Benny Safdie) is Jewish and Margaret feels stuck in-between. Margaret is frequently praying to God and she hopes he’ll answer because Margaret feels like she needs all the help she can get. New house, new school, new friends and puberty on the horizon. Margaret is on a journey to discover who she is. A journey that her mother and grandmother (Kathy Bates) are still on. This is a story which is timeless and relatable for so many young girls out there. Both heart-warming and hilarious. Don’t miss this.

It’s-a-him, Mario! It was only a matter of time before Super Mario got the animated film treatment. You might be wondering how they’ve made a movie based on a game where a plumber runs from left to right, eating mushrooms, throwing fireballs, jumping on turtles and racing karts but there’s a lot of stories to be found in Mario’s 42 years of history. Mario (Chris Pratt) and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) find themselves separated as they’re thrown into the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario meets up with the lovable Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and the fearless Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) who explain that the evil King of Koopas, Bowser (Jack Black), is on a mission to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom and he’s got Mario’s brother Luigi hostage! Mario will have to team up with Peach, Toad and even Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) to save the day. Perfect for an Easter holiday trip to the cinema.

I could say that the table-top roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons has recently become cool thanks to shows like Stranger Things and Critical Role but the truth is, it’s always been cool. The world is just finally catching up with the rest of us geeks. The world of D&D is being brought to life in this new film from the minds behind Spider-man: Homecoming and the hilarious Game Night. A group of adventurers (including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page and Sophia Lillis from IT) head out on a quest to find a mysterious treasure. Of course, the task is anything but simple and it’s up to them to save the realm from certain destruction. This is like The Lord Of The Rings with no limits, and it looks like it’s going to capture the fun of D&D. Plus it’s got Hugh Grant playing a mysterious character against his usual type, which is always brilliant.
I think we’ve probably all experienced relationships with bosses that weren’t super-positive and that’s what Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) is trying to move away from. He wants to focus on himself and embrace life in New Orleans. That’s easier said than done because Renfield’s boss is Dracula (Nicolas Cage). The Count is having a bit of trouble letting go of Renfield after centuries of servitude. Written by Robert Kirkman (creator of The Walking Dead) and Ryan Ridley (one of the writers of Rick and Morty) and directed by Chris McKay (director of The Lego Batman Movie) this dark comedy sounds great but the real headline is the perfect casting of Nicolas Cage as Dracula. The level of intensisty he could bring to this role is worth the ticket price alone.
Ted Lasso
An American TV show about a British sport. It sounded like a recipe for disaster, but it’s resulted in one of the most heartfelt, genuine and uncynical shows of our time, dealing with all sorts of relevant issues. Jason Sudeikis returns as Ted Lasso, the American college football coach who was enlisted to help struggling Premier League football team, AFC Richmond. Ted’s football knowledge might be a little lacklustre but what he lacks in soccer smarts he makes up in positivity and a real drive to help his team be the best players they can be. Last season saw Nate (Nathan Shelley) letting success go to his head and becoming short-tempered and selfish. His growing frustration with Ted’s methods meant he was ripe to be poached by Richmond’s former owner, Rupert (Anthony Head) to coach his new club, West Ham. This change in dynamic is going to lead to a new rivalry between the clubs, with Ted, Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) and Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) trying to lead Richmond to success. There’s sure to be more drama and laughs outside the pitch as well with club owner Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) and her team of Keeley (Juno Temple) and Leslie (Jeremy Swift). I’ve never been a fan of football but I’m on the edge of my seat for AFC Richmond. Believe.

It’s the show that you want. (The show I know you want.) Ooh-oohohh, honey. Grease is the word and another word is television. That’s right, Grease is hitting the small-screen. Rise of the Pink Ladies is a prequel set four years before the original film. And before you ask, yes, it’s a musical. It follows four outcasts who are fed-up with the school heirachy and decide they want to do things a little differently. The boys have the T-Birds, why shouldn’t the girls have something of their own? Grease is such a classic and I was cynical when I first heard about this show but it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun, with catchy songs and characters dealing with issues that are still relevant to teenagers today. You’ll be summer-lovin’ this in April.
Citadel
Richard Madden (Game of Thrones, Bodyguard) and Priyanka Chopra Jonas (The Matrix Resurrections) star in this sexy new spy thriller series from the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame). The global spy agency known as the Citadel has fallen and all its agents have had their memories wiped clean but agents Mason and Nadia are starting to remember. With the help of a former of colleague Bernard (Stanley Tucci), these former spies will need to dust off their skills to stop a new regime from taking over the world.
Based on the best-seling collected writings of Cheryl Strayed this is a new mini-series starring the wonderful Kathryn Hahn (Bad Moms, Wandavision, Glass Onion). Hahn stars as Clare, a woman who finds herself disillusioned with life. Her marriage is on the brink of falling apart, she can’t connect with her teen daughter and her writing career is fading away. The answer to her problems might lie within. When an old friend asks her to take over as an advice columnist, Clare thinks she’s the last person to be giving advice. But as she slowly embraces the role she finds herself unpacking her own issues as she helps others with theirs. Expect Hahn to bring her all to this role.

Gareth
West End stalwart starring in The Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis and now the tour of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical, which is heading to Norwich Theatre Royal between 19 – 29 Apr.
The show is inspired by the magic of the Road Dahl book, in which lucky Charlie wins a golden ticket to explore Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Gareth is really excited to be playing the chocolatier Willy Wonka: “Wonka is a mercurial character. He’s everything you want him to be, which is great fun to play despite his cynicism and how sinister he is sometimes. You might say he’s as layered as a gobstopper!”
With such a famous character, many people have their interpretation of Willy Wonka. It can be a lot of pressure, but Gareth has taken it all in his stride. “I watched the films when they came out, and I’ve revisited them again for research purposes, but because I came to the book late, it offered me the opportunity to have an open mind with my interpretation.”
Gareth continued: “I do have a strange affinity with the character. I don’t know whether that’s a good or bad thing!
He’s a complex character, but I do understand his frustrations and disappointments.”
The magic of the Chocolate Factory has stood the test of time, with the lucky children going beyond the Wonka gates to discover more than just the remarkable edible delights. For
Gareth, the story is a testament to Road Dahl’s brilliant writing, “All of the characters, from Wonka to Charlie and all the children, have been written so vividly that they’re enticing. They all come from such different backgrounds, so kids can relate to them and their families.
Although they are all, in some ways, spoilt and excessive, and are allowed to be by their parents, kids can relate to this and find the enjoyment in it, especially when they get their just desserts. The story really has got everything… and who doesn’t like chocolate!”
However, for all its spectacle and West End razzmatazz, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory doesn’t shy away from
Do you have a sweet tooth?
Oh my god, I have such a sweet tooth. My vice is chocolate, and I’m not just saying that. But I have been so good at limiting my sugar intake doing this show – there are only so many times the wardrobe department can expand the waist of my trousers!
If you could invent your own Wonka chocolate bar, what would it be?
I mean, I would eat anything in chocolate, but I’d want to combine mint and orange, as they’re my two favourite flavours.
the darker elements of Dahl’s tale as spoilt kids meet all manner of sticky ends in the chocolate factory.
The musical combines the memorable songs from the original 1970s motion picture (The Candy Man and Pure Imagination) with all new numbers from the multi award-winning songwriters of Hairspray. “There are so many nods to different musical genres, from pop to heartfelt ballads and big dancing theatrical numbers. Wonka also has a brilliant patter song at the top of Act 2. It really has got everything in it!” adds Gareth.
Between the story, the music, the dance, the spectacular set and the wonderful cast, Gareth reckons people are in for a sweet treat with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. “I hope audiences leave with a tear in their eye and a big smile on their face. I think the production is very moving, especially towards the end, and it is great fun. I’d love to sit out and watch it myself!”
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

We havea four-day long weekend this month with the arrival of Easter (7-10 April). That’s 96 hours to get a bit more sleep, do a bit less ‘business’, stay out a bit late and treat ourselves in whatever form hits the spot. In four days, there’s room for self-care and socialising. See it as preparation for the three Bank Holiday Mondays in May we have to look forward to too!
Easter and food are much like chips and vinegar. Though not quite the madness of Christmas, nonetheless, we’ll see TV ads for get togethers proffering plates of colourful food and, of course, chocolate eggs.
LET’S START WITH A BIT OF TRIVIA. Did you know that this year we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first chocolate egg? In 1873, Fry’s made hollow chocolate eggs from moulds (unlike in France and Germany where they made solid eggs, that must have been hard on the teeth!). Two years later in 1875, Cadbury’s – their rival – started producing them too.
Norwich is no stranger to chocolate - seeing Caley’s production for the troops during WW1, then selling up to John Mackintosh & Sons Limited in 1932. Following this in 1969, Mackintosh’s and Rowntree’s of York partnered, resulting in the Norwich factory producing 40 million eggs a year! Forty million!
Today, we not only have chocolate eggs, but also bunnies, cute little figures, and so much more to choose from.
The world is our chocolate oyster. I personally like to stick to traditional eggs (though Hotel Chocolat’s Sunny Side Up chocolate half eggs - Chantry Place and John Lewis - look very delicious). Is it a thing to have an Easter list?
mouth-watering selection in soft pastels, so pretty! It goes without saying that all of these are beautifully presented, so whether gifting them or buying for ourselves, even just looking at them will bring joy.
Other glorious temptations are to be found at the Deli in Jarrold (for some of the best local offerings). But why stick to just chocolate? Macarons & More in The Royal Arcade, Norwich has a
But it really isn’t just about the chocolate. Really. An Easter lunch is something many of us cherish. A chance to get together as most retail businesses close (giving many hard-working people a valued extra day off), much like we have on Christmas Day. And with fewer arguments about beef versus turkey, or whether to serve Yorkshires or cauliflower cheese, both, or none, Easter lunch should be that much more relaxed.
Let’s make it a weekend long affair. At The Ivy Brasserie in Norwich, they’re serving between 7-10th, a Peter Rabbit carrot cake with chocolate soil, pistachio crumb, vanilla ice cream, candy floss, and mint (£8.95). And cocktails like the Choco Nut Martini with vodka, Baileys, dark chocolate sauce, Macadamia Liqueur and
It’s another month to keep us on our toes, Easter treats and a chance to meet Super Mario, says Melanie Cook of www.VisitNorwich.co.uk

double cream (£11.00), or a Pineapple Rumble, which is Plantation Pineapple Rum, Antica Formula, Rubis Chocolate Wine, Cherry Heering, and Campari (£11.50). It all sounds very decadent, and the last one? A challenging concoction of things I’ve never heard of so, I think I’d better try one.
Head over to North Norfolk, where you can pick some up goodies for Easter lunch or swerve lunch altogether to buy locally made produce for a relaxed smorgasbord of delights in front of the TV. At the annual Holkham Easter Market (Saturday 8, Sunday 9 April, free entry, £5 parking) you’ll find over 50 local artisan producers selling food and drink, gifts and crafts. There will also be street vendors to keep up your strength as you wander around (always irresistible). I like to pack in as much as I can into a day out, so, depending on the weather, why not tack on a beach walk, or at the very least a stomp around the lake?
And if you have a young family to keep occupied, Holkham caters for them too, not only over the Easter weekend, but during the long Easter holidays. Get involved with crafts, games, nature trails and dressing up, performances of The Velveteen Rabbit (7-10 April), Park
dungarees. You’ve guessed it - Mario and Luigi are making an appearance! There will be four free 30-minute opportunities for meet and greets at 12pm at Level 1, 1.30pm at Level 2, 2.30pm at Level 1 and 3.30pm at Level 4 & 5. Don’t miss it! Also, perhaps stay a bit longer to have a go in their retro video game arcade and gaming lounge - Retro Replay - for some classic gaming fun afterwards. Or if VR games are more your thing, Castle Quarter has the new, bigger Vector VR experience with its VR gaming pods on level 1.
And whilst we’re in the mood for games. Bowling House on Dereham

There are prizes to be had too!

During the revelry Archer is approached by Eleanor Lamb who believes her life is in danger. Before long Lamb has disappeared and there is a dead man in her Malibu house. Action-packed and suspenseful, this will take you on a rollercoaster ride right up until the final page.
This book sees the twenty-fourth instalment of the Detective Rebus series and starts with the shocking twist that he is in the dock, but with no hint as to what he is charged with. We then head into the past to uncover the truth. Brilliantly complex and highly entertaining.
An atmospheric thriller about the mysterious disappearance of three girls in a 20-year-old car crash. A deliciously dark, captivating and twisty thriller, meaning-if you’re craving more mystery in your lifethat itch will be scratched perfectly.
Another month, another James Patterson novel. In this, the twenty-third book in the Women’s Murder Club series, we have the usual murder that Detective Lindsay Boxer has to try and solve along with her colleagues, and typically, with her three best friends Cindy, a journalist, Yuki a prosecutor and Claire, the Chief Medical Examiner, who all get involved in one way or another. With the usual short, sharp, fast-paced chapters that all Women’s Murder Club fans have grown to love, this is a sure fire hit.
Although this not a short book, and let’s be honest, King’s novels seldom are, at over 500 pages it still felt like a quick page-turner. This book shows the continued quality of his writing and he certainly lets us all know he is still the King. A feel of Stranger Things meets the X-Men, this novel has lots of nostalgiainducing content for King fans and is also a great starting point for new King readers. A change from my usual genre, but well worth a read.
In this intelligent and emotional dystopian thriller the author muses questions about freedom, the essence of society and freedom. Once again Roth writes a page turner which is somewhere between The Hunger Games and 1984. The allegory in the plot translates into our own world which may make everyone re-evaluate their relationship with social media.
This is a collection of three novellas and all are excellently written; Homecoming, Strawberry Moon and, completing the set, Sparring Partners. All are fast-paced page-turners written with Grisham’s usual mastery of the legal thriller. Arguably Sparring Partners is the best of the bunch and probably why it graces the cover, yet all are well worth a read.
Bringinga dog into your life is one of the most amazing and rewarding things you can do, but it also turns your world upside down and certainly does not come without its challenges. One of the big issues some owners face is leaving their dog for extended periods of time if they need to go somewhere that wouldn’t typically be suitable for a dog; for example shopping. In my case I get as much separation anxiety as my dog does and would always choose to have him with me if I could!
This is where arc Shopping Centre in Bury St Edmunds comes in. They are a super dog-friendly, open-air shopping centre and part of the #dogfriendlybse campaign, run by Camp Tails Doggy Daycare, Our Bury St Edmunds BID and
running around care-free to the tune of “Who let the dogs out?” by the Baha Men. So, some basic good behaviour is expected. For example, making sure your dog is on a short lead, cleaning
Bury & Beyond. Bury St Edmunds is aiming to be the most dog-friendly town in the UK and arc Shopping Centre is an important part of this. We were very lucky to be invited along to check it out with our nervous and excitable dog Atlas.
When we arrived, one of the first things we noticed was that the car-park is extremely close to the shopping centre and having the option of an open-air car-park rather than multistorey was a big benefit for us. That way we can avoid stairs and lifts and get Atlas to the shops a bit quicker. When you approach the shops, there is a sign that explains the expectations for the behaviour of dogs and their owners. It’s great for a venue to be dog-friendly but that doesn’t mean dogs should be
up after your dog, not leaving your dog unattended, not jumping on other visitors (that goes for the owners too) and keeping the barking down as much as possible. We think this is a very important aspect of being a dogfriendly destination. Everyone still needs to feel comfortable, whether they have a dog or not, and even if you’re visiting with your four-legged friend, everyone needs to be on their best behaviour! When walking round the main shopping area, you can easily identify the shops participating in the campaign, as they have a green sign in their window, dog bowls with water and some even have treats! We went into lots of different places as well as taking in some refreshments in Juice Bros
and The Coffee Shop, giving Atlas a proper taste of shopping life! I won’t lie, we were a bit nervous about how Atlas would find the experience as he can be bit anxious and reactive, but we needn’t have worried because he was such a good boy and so chilled out! The people in every shop we visited were so welcoming and the staff greeted us with a smile and some even said “Hello” to Atlas, giving him some treats and cuddles. As we’d received a special invitation to visit, Atlas was given a bandana to wear and loved being an ARC VIP for the day! The atmosphere was very relaxed and because it was obvious which shops we could go in, we were able to wander around freely and let Atlas go at his own pace. Truth be told, Atlas was so relaxed that I got to actually enjoy shopping and have a proper browse, something I haven’t done in ages! We visited on a Sunday as we wanted it to be a little quieter for his first visit, so it would be worth taking this into consideration if your dog can also get a bit stressed in new environments.
We had wanted to head into Bury St Edmunds itself, but after a couple of hours of shopping, Atlas was very tired (and let’s be honest, so were we) so we decided to save that until our next visit. Visiting somewhere so welcoming of dogs made us reflect on how few places like this exist in our local area currently, so here’s hoping more towns follow Bury St Edmunds’ example! Thank you very much to arc Shopping Centre for such a wonderful first shopping experience for Atlas, we will be back soon!

Remove negative influences.
If something or someone brings you more negative energy than positive, it’s time to evaluate their place in your life.
Spring has sprung!
At least equinoxically, if not weatherwise. So how is your year going for you?
Are your New Year’s resolutions flying high or have they crash landed harder than a Chinese spy balloon (allegedly)?
Easter is here, bringing the season of rebirth and rejuvenation, so there’s no better moment to give your life a spring spruce! It’s time to take stock during these April showers so that when the sunshine comes, you’re on track for your best year yet.
2023: Ronan Keating is a Grandad, tomatoes are harder to find than the Scarlet Pimpernel and strikes are more prolific than Matt Hancock’s infamous WhatsApp messages... probably.
But how is your year going? Kudos to you if you’re exactly where you planned to be. It’s good to acknowledge your achievements and give yourself a mental pat on the back. For those whose resolutions have vanished in the rearview mirror, it may be time to reconsider them. If they’ve disappeared faster than a delivery of Prime at the supermarket, maybe they weren’t that important in the first place. This year may have been overwhelming already, so slimming down on your self-imposed obligations might be just what you need. It’s time to think balance. Are you headed where you want to be? It’s never too late to correct your course. Much like Rose floating on her frozen door, sometimes you have to put yourself first and sometimes letting go is in your best interest.
Frankly, thinking about fi nances is the most boring part of adulting in my opinion. But it’s no secret that many of us are feeling the pinch
of the current economical environment, so reviewing your outgoings is the quickest way to save a few pennies. Check those subscriptions. Are you paying for several streaming services you don’t need? An Amazon Prime account you never use? On average, UK households waste £170 a year on unused subscriptions, with a third having multiple memberships for the same services. It might be time to consolidate and exterminate. Think Dalek wedding.
It is spring and with the daffodils comes the time to ditch those autumn/ winter shades and add some colour to your life. Take some inspiration from the season and brighten up your wardrobe. It doesn’t need to cost the Earth either. I can’t be the only one who forgets about those items lost in the back of the cupboard. Look through your own rails first and bring the things you forgot you even owned to the front. If you’ve got some spare income, Vinted and Ebay are cheap ways to update your wardrobe with some new-to-you pieces at reasonable prices. For pops of colour and statement pieces, why not try everything5pounds.com. Cheer yourself up with a fresh outfit suitable for the changing season, without the need to sell any organs on the black market.
‘What do you want for dinner?’ can be the most dreaded question of the day. And it’s easy for weekly meals to start resembling the repetitive backdrop of a Scooby-Doo cartoon. So, why not switch it up and delve into some new dishes; pinchofnom.com is full of free recipes, albeit with some
scrolling, divisible by key ingredients of your choice. Equally, simplyrecipes. com has suggestions for every meal of the day. And they don’t all involve hipster inspired smashed avocado and red amaranth. Try the recipe you saw on TikTok. Spring is synonymous with new life so why not breathe some into your diet and treat your palate to a surprise?
Hear me out. I’m not suggesting you plaster your home with ‘Live, Laugh, Love’ signage, but there is something to be said for maintaining a positive mental attitude. Like attracts like... so put out the vibes you want to receive. I know it’s easier said than done, and I have lived it, but there are ways to increase your positivity. Remove negative influences. If something or someone brings you more negative energy than positive, it’s time to evaluate their place in your life. Consume positive content. Don’t torture yourself on social media following celebrities and influencers who live unrealistic lifestyles. Don’t follow accounts that make you feel the need to compare yourself. Don’t overwatch the news. Stay on top of current events but don’t drown yourself in the current of events. Concentrate on the good things happening in your life and no matter what, try to see the upside. I promise you it works and you’ll be as happy as the proverbial clam with practice.
Spring is here. A new season and a new chance to infuse your life with positive changes. As Tolstoy said; ‘Spring is the time of plans and projects’. Or if that’s a little rich for your blood, The Beach Boys once said ‘Spring vacation, good vibration’. Either way, let’s not lose our momentum now.
Charlie Smith-Knight looks at why Easter eggs aren’t the only thing to hunt this time of year. Rediscover your goals and spring forward with self-care and purpose!
Thismonth is one which brings with it promises of fresh fabulous feasts and everything downright delicious. From the warm, cinnamon scent of hot cross buns to the fragrant bouquet of herbs on your roast of choice, April is an exciting time for everything edible and nothing brings as much childlike joy as the gift of the chocolate egg.
Previously seen as a symbol of fertility and new beginnings across Europe, the first chocolate egg was introduced to Britain in 1873 by Fry’s of Turkish Delight fame. Since then, the egg has risen in popularity with a variety of interpretations and flavours. From the child-friendly brightly coloured treats (Tony’s
or
one basket”, but with so much choice at the
Chocolonely Egg-stra Special Milk Chocolate Assorted Eggs Box 150g, £5) to the downright decadent for the chocoholics (Butlers Milk Chocolate Large Wrapped Egg 395g, £18), there is an egg for everyone this Easter. And for those who may have previously been overlooked, there are some speciality surprises such as Booja Booja Hazelnut Crunch Chocolate Truffles Egg, 138g £25, which is a dairy-free, gluten-free and soya-free luxury Happi Oat Milk Chocolate Salted Caramel Chocolate Egg, 170g £12, which is made with rich, creamy oat milk chocolate and has no single-use plastic in the packaging. The saying goes “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”, but with so much choice at the Jarrold Food Hall, it would be silly not to.
When Easter arrives, it is time to fill your basket with sweet treats and confectionary. At Jarrold find more than just eggs to delight you this Easter.

As we move away from the whole-body-hug that is a glass of oaky red and the sparkling bubbles of Christmas, the question is what do we need from our Springtime white wines?
Firstly, it should pair beautifully with the glorious fresh bounty that comes with the season. Spring greens including broad beans, asparagus and broccoli, roast lamb with rosemary and seasonal local shellfish, are begging to be paired with juicy, citrus flavours. Our wine of choice is Winbirri Vineyards Solaris which is a celebration of lemon and apple but with a crisp balance and smoothness. Seeking a balance of art, nature and science in every bottle of wine, Winbirri Vineyards is a proud Norfolk wine that has won multiple awards and global recognition. The exceptional taste of their Solaris wine is the perfect accompaniment for your Easter feast or even to enjoy on its own when the weather gets warmer and your garden springs to life. Cheers!
This quick and easy recipe is light and flavoursome, celebrating the gooseberry; tart and sweet. A perfectly topical pudding to welcome in spring.
INGREDIENTS:
Makes 24
• 450g butter
• 225g caster sugar
• 450g plain flour
• 225g rice flour
• 1 tsp salt
• demerara sugar (for rolling)
• caster sugar (for dusting)
METHOD:
- Place the butter and sugar in a bowl and cream together until light, pale and fluffy. Alternatively, process them in a food processor, then scrape the mixture into a bowl.
- Sift together the flour, rice flour and salt and stir into the butter and sugar with a wooden spoon until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Working quickly, gather the dough together with your hands and put it on a clean work surface. Knead lightly together until it forms a ball, but take care not to over knead the
shortbread otherwise it will be tough and greasy. Lightly roll into a sausage shape, about 7.5cm diameter. Wrap the roll of dough in clear film and chill in the fridge.
- Preheat the oven to 190°C. Line two baking sheets with baking parchment.
- Pour the demerara sugar on to a sheet of baking parchment. Unwrap the dough and roll the sausage-roll of dough in the sugar until evenly coated. Using a large, sharp knife, slice the roll into discs, about 1cm thick.
- Place the discs on to the baking sheets, spacing them out well apart. Bake for 20-25 minutes until very pale gold in colour.
- Remove from the oven and sprinkle with golden caster sugar. Leave to cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
INGREDIENTS:
Serves 6
• 2 jars of ART’s Red Gooseberry jam
• 200g of double cream
• 100g Greek-style yoghurt or crème fraiche
• Small bar of quality milk chocolate.
METHOD:
- Gently warm the jam in a pan over a low heat for 1-2 minutes, until softened (Do not allow to overheat or burn). Remove from the heat.
- Whisk the cream in a bowl until it forms soft peaks. Fold in the yoghurt or crème fraiche and the jam, then divide between 6 glass tumblers.
- Leave the glasses in the fridge for at least 2 hours, to allow the fool to thicken.
- Garnish with some grated milk chocolate. Serve with your shortbread rounds.
INGREDIENTS:
Makes 6
• 1 Tbsp oil
• 1 onion, finely chopped
• 1 Tbsp medium curry powder
• 75g frozen peas
• 400g can Cooks&Co Chickpeas, drained and rinsed
• 100g feta
• 2 Cooks&Co Red Frenk Chillies, thinly sliced
• 500g shortcrust pastry
• 1 medium egg, beaten
• 1 tsp black sesame seeds
METHOD:
- Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6.
- Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the onion for 4-5 minutes. Add the curry powder and cook for a further 1 minute. Stir in the peas and chickpeas and cook for 2-3 minutes. Transfer to a food processor, add 2-3 tbsp water and pulse to give a coarse texture, crumble in the feta and add the chillies, season to taste.
- Roll out the pastry on a floured surface and cut 6 x 18cm circles. Divide the filling between the circles and brush the pastry edges with water, fold into a pastie shape, pressing the pastry edges to seal. Place on a baking tray, brush with egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 2025 minutes until golden.
Cooks tip
Great served with mango chutney. Swap the feta for chopped tofu and brush with a little water for a vegan option.

April is the last ideal month for planting out summer bulbs, tubers, corms and bare roots as they need time to establish themselves in readiness for flowering during the summer months. We should plant into spots with welldrained soil and lots of sunshine. The begonia, dahlia, crocosmia, gladioli, freesia and lilies will delight us in the summertime.
It is also the time to hand sow the seeds of poppies, cornflowers, corncockles, oxeye daisies, foxgloves and borage, to name but a very few, into bare borders and soils of the garden. The butterflies and bees will thoroughly enjoy them and by doing this
Tom Strowlger @garden_with_tomThemonth of April is upon us and the garden is now full of optimism and life. The spring flowers are blooming and wildlife are busy with their young. The arrival of April brings us gardeners more floral colour and healthy green growth. We can start to see the fruits of our earlier labours as the growing season gets into full swing. The spring flower that stands out this month is the daffodil, with its showy, bright, yellow trumpet.
The lawn grass is now actively growing and the early cuts should be on the lawnmower’s highest setting to keep the grass healthy. It’s the ideal time to hand sow grass seed into bare patches. To do this, lightly rake the surface soil before sowing the seed and quilt it with fresh topsoil. The grass seed should germinate within 14 days if the ground has moisture and temperatures are mild.
we support the insects and wildlife that is so precious to us all.
The warmer days of April bring new growth to our favourite plants and flowers, including green growth of the summer perennials. Unfortunately it also brings the pesky and unsightly weeds, whilst the more established weeds become more difficult to get rid of. As the soil is soft we should lift weeds and their entire root system before they take hold and become persistent for the remainder of the growing season.
We can use the warmer days to paint and maintain our garden fences, wooden benches and sleepers to smarten up the garden. It’s a good time to construct new raised beds with wooden sleepers and create new borders in time for a summer flower display. We can get our outdoor furniture out of storage to enjoy throughout the gardening season.
The longer days are upon us and warmer weather is now starting to tempt us into the garden much more frequently. We can happily garden every day, even in the evenings. We should embrace each spare day to take in the fresh air and appreciate all that is good about the outdoors and remember that the garden is our own personal sanctuary.
Please do follow me on Instagram @garden_with_tom for more seasonal gardening advice and tips.

As we transition into spring, April can be a tricky month to fi gure out what to wear. The weather can be unpredictable, with warm, sunny days followed by chilly, rainy ones. It's important to have a versatile wardrobe that can adapt to these changing conditions. Overleaf, I focus on new gilets hitting the shops but here, are some lovely new items from local stores to inspire you with what to wear in April.
As we move into April's unpredictable weather, gilets are a perfect addition to any wardrobe. Originally designed for hunters, they are now a versatile and stylish garment for anyone.
From classic puffer vests to more modern and sleek or faux-fur style options, there's a gilet out there for everyone. Additionally, their versatility makes them ideal for this transitional weather period, offering you that extra layer of warmth without the bulk of a full jacket.
So, embrace the fashionable functionality of gilets this month and stay stylish and cosy, even on those dreary days!

Spring has sprung, and with it comes a renewed sense of energy and excitement. As we shed our winter coats and embrace the warmer weather, it’s the perfect time to experiment with dopamine dressing - the science-backed trend that’s all about using bright, bold colours and accessories to boost your confidence and mood.
One of the leading local brands in this movement is One of a Kind Club, a contemporary fashion accessories label that specialises in unique, colourful pieces that make a statement. Their collections are full of bright, cheerful hues and eye-catching designs, making them the perfect choice for anyone looking to try out dopamine dressing this spring.
So why does dopamine dressing work so well?
The science behind it is actually pretty fascinating. As we mentioned earlier, dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a big role in our brain’s reward and pleasure centres. When we experience something that makes us happy, our brain releases dopamine to reinforce that behaviour and make us want to do it again. By wearing clothes and accessories that make us feel good, we can actually trigger that dopamine response and boost our mood.
The idea of ‘enclothed cognition’
But there’s more to it than just the dopamine - there’s also the idea of “enclothed cognition.” This is the concept that the clothes and accessories we wear can actually influence the way we think and feel. When we wear something that makes us feel confident or powerful, we’re more likely to act that way too. So, by donning a colourful, bold necklace or statement earrings, we’re actually signalling to our brain that we’re ready to take on the world.
Of course, the colours we choose can also have a big impact on our mood. One of a Kind Club is a great choice for this, as their collections are full of bright, cheerful hues like sunny yellows, electric blues, and vivid pinks. Each colour has its own unique emotional associations - for example, yellow is often associated with happiness and optimism, while blue is associated with calmness and trust. By choosing colours that match the mood we want to be in, we can actually help ourselves feel that way more easily.
So, if you’re looking to boost your confidence and mood this spring (or anytime of the year), consider trying out dopamine dressing. One of a Kind Club has everything you need to get started - from colourful statement earrings to bold, chunky necklaces. With their unique designs and vibrant colours, you’re sure to find something that makes you feel fabulous. And with the science backing it up, you can feel confident that you’re making a smart choice for your mental health as well as your style. Feel good everyday with One of a Kind Club; confidence inspiring jewellery.
I do try to practise what I preach. Sleep, sensible eating habits, exercise and deep breathing are all so important to our health.
I’m notsure what came over me but I attended my interview with Marie Reynolds, a globally renowned skincare and wellness expert, without a scrap of make up on, looking, at best, pasty! Marie, in her early 50s, was all glowing gorgeousness and contented living, so it was my mission to find out how she does it!
Marie, who is originally from London, now lives in a very pretty barn in the countryside near Reepham, a tranquil setting for her purpose-built studio, The Norfolk Clinic, where she works her magic on both our inner and outer selves. It was built, she says, with crystal quartz in the foundations which tells you just how seriously she takes her work.
And it is here that her clients, from all over the world, descend to enjoy her state of the art equipment which offers the latest complementary therapies - all based on ancient Chinese wellbeing principles. These include body treatments such as activated oxygen therapy, micro-needling, ozone insufflation and LED light therapy. She also offers facials including the Australian organic Qi anti-ageing facial which uses static magnetic field therapy and is said to have great results.
She sees people with all manner of problems, from troublesome skin, to poor sleep patterns, and helps with pain management, advises on gut health and more.
The first step, she says, is an in depth consultation where Marie will analyse everything about you, from how you sit, to the shape of your feet, your eating habits and more. ‘It’s like the Da Vinci Code,’ she laughs. ‘A real investigation. But everything about a person works together, everything is connected - we are 3D beings, not 2D ones.’
So, by looking at how your body acts and behaves, she can see the results this has on your mind, health and skin - and can thus work out an individual plan for you.
Marie started in the mainstream beauty world but found it unsatisfying, preferring Oriental practices and beliefs. ‘Chinese medicine is the foundation to all that I do,’ she says, adding that she has studied beauty therapy,
homeopathy, genetics, counselling, aromatherapy, the Bowen Technique, colonic hydrotherapy, and energy medicine.
‘I’ve always been interested in how the body works,’ she says. ‘And I want to give people the tools to live a better lifestyle.’
Marie, who has many leading beauty editors and celebrities among her fans and is usually described as a global skin expert, has created successful ranges for skincare brands such as Origins, and in 2018 started to develop her own 17-strong skincare, supplement and accessories line called Marie Reynolds London. It includes Restore, a skinfood facial mask which has won several awards, Goji Mallow Cleanse, and a new eye care range, including eye masks.
She isn’t planning to add any products at present, saying: ‘I think I have covered everything you might need - each product can take a couple of years to bring to market - it is a long process.’
Marie worked in London for many years, with clinics in Kensington, Knightsbridge and Mayfair, but life changed when she met her (now) husband, Julian Pilkington, who was originally from the same part of London as her but had moved to Norfolk several years beforehand. ‘It just made me think! I’d been a single mum for 14 years and it was hard - really hard. So it was time to think of a different way of living.
‘I’ve been here almost 10 years. My daughter, Olivia, is now 25 and is back in London, teaching at a primary school.’
She still acts as a visiting clinician at Fortnum and Mason in Piccadilly, which retains a special place in her heart, with Marie explaining: ‘I love going, and I tend to go every two or three months for a couple of days. It’s mad, really busy and I find myself dreaming about the journey home!’
So she is very settled in Norfolk, listing Wells next the Sea as a favourite place, alongside Blickling, adding; ‘And we love packing up a picnic and heading to Winterton.’
She and her husband have two chocolate labradors, sisters Ava and Molly, so much time is spent walking them, and Marie is also a fan of wild swimming, especially in the sea.
‘I do try to practise what I preach,’ she says. ‘Sleep, sensible eating habits, exercise and deep breathing are all so important to our health. I choose organic foods as much as possible - you are what you eat.’
As she offers Zoom consultations and meetings, she is fully accessible to all but how lucky are we to have such a sought after specialist on our doorstep.
Visit Marie’s website, www.mariereynoldslondon.com, to buy her products, book a £150 consultation and find out more.
Marie also produces a weekly podcast called Good Vibes Only, which is released on Spotify each Sunday.

Able Community Care has been in the same family for four decades and now provides live-in care services throughout the UK.
Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home.
Meeting people inevitably leads, either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers.
Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information.

Question: I volunteer at a day-centre in helping to organise social events, but we often run out of ideas and find ourselves repeating the same event as we did last year. Where can I find some different things to suggest to the team?
Answer: The Elderly Accommodation Council, (EAC) the nationwide organisation which helps older people with a wide range of housing requests, also has an EAC Entertainment Directory of over 1,300 Acts, UK wide, keen to perform in day centres, retirement complexes and care home.
To visit the directory to see if there is anything of interest go to: www.housingcare.org › entertainment
Question: I wish to find out details with reference to care support which involves family issues, property, finances and other legal issues. I have been advised to approach Social Services but I do not want to do that. I have been told there might be other social workers who do not work in the statutory sector?
Answer: You have been given the correct information as there are approximately two thousand independent social workers and they can be found at the British Association of Social Workers- Independents Directory. Just put your location in and you can find social workers in the area and see details of the work they cover from children to older adults. www.basw.co.uk
There are also other Consultants/ Practitioners who are not registered as social workers but have considerable experience of social care and can on a private basis, provide support around the arena of social care in all its aspects.. For example, one local company is A Port In A Storm which can be found at www.aportinastorm.co.uk
Question: Several pensioner friends have mentioned Walking Football but did not seem to know much about it! What age group is it for, are their local clubs, how much does it cost?
Answer: Walking Football began in 2011 and is aimed at adults over the age of 50. Walking Football is played at walking pace with players not allowed to run, either with the ball or without the ball and jogging is also not allowed.
Currently there are over 1000 clubs and to find out if there is one near you Google the WFA Directory and put in your location.
Every sports club at every level has costs; walking football is no different. From the price of pitch hire to the cost of the balls themselves, everything has to be paid for. At many clubs, players are asked to pay a small fee – essentially a membership fee – to cover expenses for a set period of time; usually a year.

HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. To be honest a lot of people are immediately put off by the name, it sounds a bit hardcore!
HIIT involves short bursts of intense exercise alternated with low intensity recovery periods. It is a really timeefficient way to exercise, and there are so many ways you can do HIIT, with or without equipment!
Because of the intensity level, usually a HIIT workout lasts no more than 1030 mins (excluding warm up and cool down).
HIIT is accessible to almost everyone, unless a medical professional has advised you to avoid vigorous exercise. Remember High Intensity isn’t the same as High Impact. It’s totally possible to do HIIT without jumping up and down!
The main aim during the workout is to get your heart rate up for a short period of time. You should feel like you are working at around 80% of your maximum possible effort. For example, a 30 seconds run (or even a walk) at 80% of your maximum effort, followed by 90 seconds at a slow and steady recovery pace. Repeat 5 times. The length of work and rest periods will vary depending on the type of exercise you are doing, and your fitness levels. Usually the rest period as a minimum would be at least the same length as the work period, usually more. continued on page 40 ➤

Can use 25–30% more calories than the same length traditional exercise session. You carry on burning calories after HIIT due to a phenomenon known as EPOC (Excess post exercise Oxygen Consumption).
Helps you lose fat and gain muscle
-Studies indicate HIIT may be most effective for fat loss in people who are overweight. This is also true for muscle gain, and is most likely to occur in people who were less active to begin with.
Boosts your muscles’ ability to use oxygen in the same way as long endurance workouts, so it’s a great addition to your training regime!
Can reduce heart rate and blood pressure in people who are overweight, for whom high blood pressure is common.
Reduces blood sugar - Studies have shown HIIT reduces blood sugar and improves insulin resistance more than traditional, continuous exercise.
Makes you fit for life! Whether you train regularly or just want to run around with your kids, HIIT training can improve your ability to do these things in just a few sessions a week.
Pick something you can already do at lower intensity. For example, if you can walk comfortably, but find jogging a challenge, walking will be your low intensity rest period and jogging will be your high intensity work period.
If you have joint pain, pick something low impact such as cycling or swimming.
Your rest periods must be equal to or longer than your work periods. Keep work periods under 30 seconds. Work periods longer than 30 seconds will be difficult to sustain at the intensity required to count as HIIT.
Start with just a couple of sessions per week. Adequate recovery between training sessions is a must to avoid injuries.
Below are a few simple examples of HIIT workouts, but remember you can make almost any form of exercise into a HIIT session!
Exercise Bike. Pedal as hard and fast as possible for 30 seconds. Then, pedal at a slow, easy pace for 1-2 mins. Repeat this pattern for 15–30 minutes.
Jog at a challenging pace for 30 seconds. Then, walk for 1–2 minutes. Repeat this pattern for 10–20 minutes. Do the following exercises for 30 seconds each, resting for 60 seconds before moving onto the next exercise.
1)Squats 2) Push ups 3) Sit ups 4) lunges. Repeat for 15-30 minutes
