LAMMA 2022 will be ‘worth the wait’
T
he LAMMA Show returns to the Birmingham NEC next month for its longawaited 40th anniversary. More than 500 exhibitors will attend the two day event on 4-5 May. So too will thousands of visitors – for a show which organisers say will be well worth waiting for after it was postponed due to the pandemic. Originally planned for January, the 2022 show was delayed amid concerns over the Omicron variant of Covid-19. But with all restrictions now lifted, LAMMA is going ahead unhindered – allowing visitors to reconnect after a difficult couple of years. Nichola Bell, from organisers Agriconnect, said: “As well as getting up to date with the latest machinery, technology and other innovations, visitors can enjoy some nostalgia in our new Clas-
sics Zone supported by Classic Tractor magazine. “Our anniversary celebrations will showcase the incredible progress made across the industry since the first LAMMA event 40 years ago. We will more be announcing more exciting new features in the coming weeks.”
Opportunity to engage Chris Taylor, from the NFU, said: “It’s more important than ever that we make up for the lost faceto-face opportunities due to the pandemic. LAMMA presents us with the opportunity to engage with thousands of our members over the two days.” Kubota will be using the event to unveil its M6-001 Utility series tractor range. Marketing manager Rob Edwards said the company would be showcasing new products, as well as promoting

Contract farming costs set to rise
T
he National Association of Agricultural Contractors (NAAC) is warning farmers and land managers that contracting prices will have to rise. NAAC chairman James Bannister said fuel prices had already doubled and continued to climb. Machinery costs were rising and labour is at a premium for skilled operators. “It will no longer be possible for agricultural contractors to retain static prices. Looking at the escalation in input costs, with spring work here, professional contractors will have no choice but to increase costs to sustain their own businesses.” Mr Bannister said contractors were trying to find the right balance to retain customers while keeping pace with rising inflation. Offering the cheapest service was a clear ropute out of the industry, he warned. Machinery replacement costs and keeping good labour were already causing a massive headache for contractors, before the current fuel hikes. Red diesel prices have soared,
John Deere is ‘champion on the road’ Just three months after its launch, John Deere’s powerful six-cylinder 6R 185 is officially the most fuel-efficient sub250hp tractor on the road. The new 6R 185 consumed only 355g/kWh of diesel and 14g/ kWh DEF, according to the latest DLG-PowerMix test. The consists of 14 test cycles that simulate various loads on the tractor and measure its fuel and AdBlue

with fuel getting harder to source. NAAC chief executive Jill Hewitt said: “Any contractor who understands their own costs will recognise that price increases are vital to keep pace, earn a living and retain some stability and longevity in their business. “Many farmers now rely on their contractor to take on roles that they may no longer
Tough decisions Expectations on contractors continue to escalate. Environmental protection, specialist training, record keeping and the latest technology, all require a new level of expertise and equipment. But cost increases are forcing some tough decisions. The NAAC has recently launched a new online pricing tool for its membership to allow contractors to evaluate each operation, taking into account all costs, so they can make realistic quotes, supported by datsa It will become increasingly apparent that farmers “get what you pay for,” said Mr Bannister. Farmers and contractors must work in partnership to ensure all businesses can remain viable, productive and sustainable, he added.

consumption. Depending on fuel price, the tractor can save farmers some £2 per hour during transport, says John Deere. With a low unladen weight of 7.9 tonnes and a maximum output of 234hp, the 6R 185 is a “born road tractor,” it adds.
John Deere says the 6R 185 continues to build on the success on the 6R Series. Previously, the 6R 250 achieved the best PowerMix test values ever measured in the 250hp plus performance class. As a result, the tractor is still the leader.
All John Deere tractors were tested according to the strict specifications of the demanding DLG PowerMix Transport Test at the DLG test centre in Germany. The test cycles on the road involve driving under typical operating conditions with low and high loads.
Kubota launches Work Smarter warranty scheme A warranty incentive scheme introduced by Kubota seeks to boost the number of hours chosen by customers when purchasing a new tractor. New variable chamber baler with film binding
K
uhn’s new VBP 3165 now features a twin-reel film binding system like that of the brand’s popular fixed chamber balers. This enables the flexibility of a variable chamber baler to be coupled with the improved Intelliwrap system that uses a 750mm film wrap to reduce costs and save time, says the company. The VBP 3165 uses two 750mm rolls. Kuhn’s patented duck-bill film applicator optimises the use of film binding which helps to reduce the amount of film needed, saving operators up to 37% compared to a traditional wrapping system. The rolls weigh 25kg, with a waist-height mounting point This makes them easier to handle and change. The 750mm width also makes the rolls easier to store, says Kuhn baler specialist Thomas Ferrand. “This will save contractors and farmers time in the field and make ordering easier. There is space on board to store 10 rolls
The versatile baler will be appealing to contractors
of film, meaning the operator can carry more than sufficient for a day’s work.” Unlike a fixed chamber baler, the VBP 3165 can be used for different forages in a variety of conditions. This is of particular use in wet conditions where the chamber can adjust to account
for changes in weight and forage type. “This provides operators with an option to work in poorer conditions and still lock in the nutritional value to make best use of forage,” says Mr Ferrand. Combining the flexibility of a variable chamber machine with
film-on-film binding has created a faster, more economical baler, he adds. This is likely to have particular appeal to farm contractors. The VBP 3165 creates a tight, compact bale with better protection around the circumference. This oxygen barrier helps improve bale quality.

Twin-rotor rake increases flexibility at harvest Matching baler capacity to swath width is optimising harvest output in Nottinghamshire
M
aximising baler output is a challenge that farm contractor Olly Banton knows well – and why he has invested in a Fendt Former rake to increase efficiencies. Mr Banton is operations manager at Stuart M Ranby Agriculture – a large contracting company based in Saundby, Nottinghamshire. The 2017 investment in the Fendt Former 7850 rake sought to boost baler output, he explains. The company took delivery of a Former twin-rotor rake in a bid to move small rows of straw at harvest into larger swaths. Alongside this, low maintenance requirements and multiple swath delivery options were essential for added flexibility. “We pump out around 10,000 large bales every year,” says Mr Banton. “But being contractors, the combine header widths vary between customers. Some days we could be following a 40ft wide combine, and others it could be as small as 15ft. “Our baler size doesn’t alter between customers, and all the bales go into the local power
8 Anglia Machinery April 2022
stations. At harvest time, output is key, and we need to keep the balers busy and limit inefficient small swaths.”
Simple to adjust The Former has few running costs. But Mr Banton says the output increase of the balers and reduced running costs have been noticeable. Another key reason for the purchase was the simplicity of setting up the rake. The rake works well on all of Mr Benton’s tractors – including modern units such as a 2019 Fendt 724. The oldest is a 2011 Fendt 820, which the company has owned since new and has 8,000 hours on the clock. “The Former is easy to setup, with just one spool valve required for operating the raise and lower of the rotors,” says Mr Benton. “It features a soft float control, which can be manually adjusted on the machine and regulates the speed in which the arm lowers the rotors to minimise wear. “As we don’t have to have multiple spools for various hydraulic options, and it doesn’t take a huge tractor to pull it, we can run the Former on any tractor we own, which offers huge flexibility in the summer. Challenging year The poor straw harvest in 2020 saw lots of short crops so Mr Banton moved nearly every swath bringing two or three into one
to limit the amount of running around for the balers. “The rake virtually paid for itself that year through increased work efficiencies.” The Former 7850 has a 7.8m working width as standard but this can be extended to 8.4m. It features 13 tine arms on each 3.6m rotor – with a winding handle which is used to adjust the rotor height. The rotors are independent from the frame so can be adjusted longitudinally and diagonally to minimise crop contamination. “Rotors overlap when filling one swath which helps keep the crop on the move once it has been lifted from the stubble.”
Delivery system Another reason for buying the Former was the delivery system. It can be changed to suit different crops. The benefit has been the size of swaths that can now be put in front of the balers. “The Former also has a side swath deposit which allows us to choose the best option for raking different size fields and means we aren’t limited to just one delivery. We haven’t needed it yet, but we can deposit into two swaths if the crop is heavy. “When we first used the Former we were surprised at how quiet it was for a twin rotor, sometimes you’d forget it was there. We also don’t have to grease the driveline, only the PTOs, so this
Setting up the Former rake was easy, says Olly Banton
is a huge benefit with multiple operators.” Once the PTO is disengaged, the rotors gently wind down to a stop, rather than juddering to halt, which protects the driveline for increased longevity, while the straight driveline design also helps to lower the cost of ownership. “The Former also folds compact on the road and the rear steering axle has meant we’ve never struggled getting into any gateways. The rotor arms can be folded for transport as soon as the PTO is disengaged, so downtime is minimised.”

Grimme on the road to demonstrate latest combination potato planter
G
rimme UK is going on the road showcasing its GL420 Exacta potato planter which offers four-row planting in 90cm row widths with true onepass combination planting. The demonstration roadshow or “#RowShow2022” will start in the south of England and work its way north over the coming months, giving as many growers as possible the chance to see the new cup planter in operation. Like the previous two, four, six and eight-row cup planter options, the GL420 Exacta offers accurate tuber placement with variable rate control, allowing the machine to cover the ground quickly. The planter includes the latest technology – such as Clever Planting to calculate the optimum planting space to maximise the yield and Section Control, which turns off the planting elements in
headlands and tramlines to save seed, time and money. The planter also includes integrated soil cultivation thanks to the GR 360 hook tine tiller. In-furrow chemical treatments are also possible with liquid and granular applicators for tuber dressing and soil treatment. “With everything that is going on at the moment, crop establish-
ment costs and soil conservation are increasingly important for UK potato growers,” says Grimme sales manager Tom Goose. “By offering four-row combination planting, the GL420 Exacta lowers these costs as it requires fewer passes to establish the crop, and thanks to its compact design, it is easy and quick to manoeuvre.
“We are really looking forward to touring the country and showing the GL 420 Exacta to growers. It’s been a long time since we have been able to organise events such as this, so we expect the #RowShow2022 to be incredibly popular. “ Growers wanting to attend a demonstration event should contact their local Grimme dealer.

Performance boost and new entry-level loader
Farmers can now choose from three small Torion wheel loaders
C
laas has added a 46hp entry-level model in its range of compact articulated wheel loaders for agriculture. The Torion 530 complements the Torion 535 and Torion 639 models which receive more engine power. It means the range of loaders with articulated steering now includes three models with engine outputs of 46-74hp. The entry-level Torion 530 is powered by a 46hp Yanmar four-cylinder engine with 2.2l displacement. The hydraulic system delivers 61 l/min at 230 bar and enables an articulated tipping load of 3,000 kg. The conical mast allows for a bucket pivot point of 3.18m to be dumped over heights of up to 2.82m and maximum reach of 1.46m. The mast and attachment are operated using a joystick. Alternatively the two additional control circuits can be controlled using an additional lever or at the push of a button. On the larger 535 and 639 models, power from the 2.1 l Yanmar four-cylinder engine has been increased to 74 hp. They are now available with either standard or High-Lift Z-kinematics. In the standard version, overreach heights of 2.82m (535) or 2.98m (639) can be achieved, while the highlift version can reach 2.97m to 3.18m.
Depending on model, the bucket pivot point is 3.19-3.54m. Maximum reach is 1.49-1.71m. With a hydraulic delivery volume of 70 or 80 l/min, the articulated tipping load of the 535 is 3,500 kg (High-Lift: 3,300 kg). On the 639 it is 3,900 kg (High-Lift: 3,600 kg). All three models have a hydrostatic drive with two speed levels, which accelerates the Torion 530 to a maximum of 20 kph and the two larger models now up to 30kph. Optional vibration damping of the mast prevents rocking on uneven terrain.
Spacious cab Thanks to the 40° steering angle of the articulated pendulum joint, manoeuvring is no problem, even in narrow yards and buildings. In addition, when fitted with standard 340/80 R18 tyres, the 530 and 535 remain be-
low 2.50m clearance height. The redesigned spacious cab has lots of storage options and storage compartments. It offers exceptional all-round visibility and, thanks to the curved front windscreen, the operator has an excellent view of the mast and raised attachments. The glass entry door and the right window can be opened by 180° and locked. The infinitely three-way adjustable steering column, the air-sprung driver’s seat, air conditioning and the low noise level in the cab ensure pleasant driving comfort. A display unit on the right A-pillar and the clear control panel next to the right armrest make work intuitive – even with changing drivers. As an option, the cab roof can be fitted with halogen work lights or up to eight LED lights with 360° illumination.
Update introduces multiple implement control
T
opcon Agriculture has updated its Horizon precision farming and crop production software to enable automatic section and variable rate control on multiple implements simultaneously. Multiple Implement Support enables users to manage auto section and variable rate control on multiple ISOBUS implements simultaneously: for example, when using a rear-mounted seed drill in combination with a front-mounted liquid applicator. Other examples are using a rear-mounted sprayer with a front-mounted slug pellet applicator – or using front and rear mounted fertiliser spinners to simultaneously spread two separate straight or compound products at different or varying rates. The update also includes Plot Planter – which offers a quick and 12 Anglia Machinery April 2022

easy way of setting out trials plots or seeding zones from the tractor cab without external software.
Eliminate errors This new feature ensures plots are laid out and planted accurately with clear, real-time visualization of the seeding process
helping to eliminate errors and ensure accurate data collection for subsequent analysis. The new software update enables Topcon users to plot obstacles such as trees, telegraph poles, hidden drain covers or patches of weeds and to set a customizable proximity alert to warn the
operator when the obstructions are approaching. “The new features contained within the latest Horizon update clearly demonstrate Topcon’s commitment to farmers, contractors and plant researchers,” says Richard Reed, of Topcon distributor LH Agro.

Spaldings focus on high-performance soil engagement
T
illso soil restructuring tines with different point and wing combinations will feature alongside the SPL Ultra range of soil-engaging parts on the Spaldings stand at LAMMA. Spaldings is the sole distributor of Tillso’s Sabre system – a multi-component assembly of points and wings to restructure compacted soils. The design of each part is based on findings from studies of soil mechanics. The system comprises a common point and shin and four soillifting wing assemblies to suit different soil types and working depths. Tillso owner Chris Lane will join Spaldings managing director Steve Constable to talk through the benefits of the system on the company’s stand at LAMMA Mr Lane said the partnership marked a return to the event for Tillso. It will be the first time the company has exhibited at the indoor show.
Best results “Being with the technical team on the Spaldings stand will be a great opportunity to explain to farmers how we arrived at the Sabre designs, how they work beneath the surface, and how users can be sure of getting the best results in different situations.” The retro-fit components are available for subsoliers from a number of different manufacturers – and also cultivators fitted with soil-loosening tines.
A one-piece delta-shaped wing is used on the Ultralite for 150250mm working depths and 400500mm spacing, while the Mono’s is designed for 225-400mm and 600-750mm spacing. Tillso’s Lite and Max products have a cast supporting frog with separate left- and right-hand bolt-on wing assemblies formed as a wide wing slat or with two chisel-like wing slats for deeper working.
Controlled tension Mr Lane says: “They are all calculated to apply controlled tension to compacted soil, which fractures as it is lifted and falls off the wings to permanently rearrange the soil aggregates.” The Spaldings exhibit will include items from the SPL Ultra range of premium-quality points, wings and shins for leading makes of cultivator and subsoiler. It includes laser scanning technology that measures wear patterns and a 3D printer for prototypes used in parts development. Original wearing parts for Grimme machinery will

also be shown as Spaldings is an approved national dealer for these components.
Vegetation control TMC Cancela, the manufacturer of mulching pasture toppers and forestry mulchers, will also be represented at the show. Spaldings said it wanted to highlight its growing machinery range supplied direct to farmers. All components are supported by the company’s technicians and local service agents. Planned exhibits include a TDE swing arm side-shift mulching flail mower, a heavyduty TMS two-way flail mower for front- or rear-mounting, and a TMK ground-preparation forest-
ry mulcher that leaves a readyto-plant finish in a single pass.
For a clean sweep Cleaning up after mud-spattered tractors and other farm vehicles is a task for powered or fixed brush sweepers from a range produced by Padagas, including bucket sweepers for clean-anddump operation. Spaldings says there are pallet fork, tractor linkage and loader-mounted brushes for all situations. All products are now available to order online, through telesales staff or with a nationwide network of sales representatives. Products are backed by a return-to-base or on-site maintenance and repairs service. The TMC Cancela mulcher (far left) will be on show at LAMMA where a range of Padagas brushes (left) will also be displayed
Award recognises young engineers
A
new award at LAMMA recognises the next generation of agricultural engineers working to make farming more efficient, profitable or sustainable. Awarded in association with the Institution of Agricultural Engineers, the accolade will go to an individual or group of young engineers who has created or otherwise worked on a piece of agricultural machinery. “From the very beginning, the LAMMA show was dedicated to promoting and educating young agricultural engineers,” explains
event manager. “LAMMA celebrates its 40th year in 2022, and as we reflect on our past, we also look to the future. “The opportunity to champion the best and brightest agricultural engineers is the perfect way to celebrate that legacy while also supporting the future of British farming.” The award showcases engineers who have created or made changes to a piece of agricultural machinery, equipment or technology and, by doing so, improved efficiency, profitability or sustainability on-farm.
“We recognise agricultural engineering can reduce the environmental footprint of farming through reducing carbon emissions and better fuel efficiency,” says IAgrE chief executive Charlie Nicklin, who is one of the award judges. The winner will be determined by a combination of judges’ scores and a public vote. Mr Nicklin says it will be a finished product, prototype or concept that will help increase farm profitability and contribute towards environmental sustainability. Anglia Machinery April 2022 17
