Take care during hot summer harvest

S

afety campaigners are urging farmers to take care this harvest – after figures showing that agriculture remains the UK’s most dangerous industry. Some 25 people were killed on UK farms over the past year, according to the Health and Safety Executive. But 25,000 more suffered long term ill-health conditions – including excessive sun exposure to farmers, contractors and tractor drivers. But 25,000 more suffered long

term ill-health conditions – including work-related injuries. The Farm Safety Foundation said the outdoor nature of the job meant working in agriculture involved spending a lot of time outside – with farmers receiving 5-10 times the yearly sun exposure compared to people who work indoors. More than half of all respondents to a survey of agricultural workers undertaken in 2017 recognised that protecting themselves from the sun was very im-

Tips when working outside • Don’t go shirtless – wear a top on when working. • Wear a hat with a brim or flap covering your ears and back of the neck. • Stay in the shade whenever possible • Use a high factor sunscreen of at least SPF50 on any exposed skin. • Drink plenty of water – little and often – to avoid dehydration. • Take a break – and be aware of tiredness, stress and poor mental health • See a doctor if you find unusual moles or spots on your skin which are changing in shape, size or colour, itching or bleeding.

portant. But more than 25% said they hardly ever used sunscreen, according to a recent survey. While construction workers have the highest number of fatalities due to sun exposure, working in agriculture is second highest and accounts for 23% of these deaths. That’s around one farm worker every month dying from skin cancer due to sun exposure.

The summer heatwave has been a huge challenge this harvest

Farmers need to protect themselves when working outdoors, said Stephanie Berkeley of the Farm Safety Foundation – especially when ultraviolet rays are at their highest between 11am and 3pm.

Fewer new UK tractors registered

20th anniversary for combination bale-wrapper Kuhn is celebrating 20 years of its i-BIO+ combination baler-wrapper – and the firm’s twin filmon-film wrapping system which offers a complete bale-in-one operation. The popularity of the i-BIO+, and its longevity, has been largely attributed to how it fits UK farm-

ing systems and unpredictable British weather, says Kuhn product specialist Rhodri Jenkins. The i-BIO+ can be used with conventional net binding or film-on-film bale binding and wrapping to eliminate the need for separate netting – speeding up the baling operation..

New range of horizontal folding tedders launched

M

achinery specialists Pottinger have launched a new range of trailed tedders. The HiT HT is available in working widths of 8.60m to 17.00m. Power requirement is said to be low with no load exerted on the tractor hitch thanks to the trailed design. With a small rotor diameter of 1.42 metres and six curved tine arms, they are suitable for all forage types The rotor chassis guides the tines, while the rotor is supported by the main frame. This means the inner rotors do not have to bear any additional weight during operation. The Pottinger tedders deliver a clean swath, says the company

4 Anglia Machinery August 2022

Weight is distributed evenly over all rotor wheels and working height is consistent across the entire working width. Because the rotors run at the correct distance to the ground, the sward is protected and the forage remains clean.

Height adjustment An easily accessible hand crank provides quick, central height adjustment. Height can also be adjusted hydraulically from the tractor seat as an option. A clearly visible scale shows the set working height, aiding operator convenience. On models with hydraulic rotor height adjustment, an electric

pre-select system is now standard. This aids folding into the transport position, height adjustment and fenceline tedding. A single double-acting spool valve operates the machine. For fenceline tedding, two rotors on the outer right-hand side can be folded backwards hydraulically at an angle of 15 degrees. The two diagonal rotors distribute the forage over the mown area without forming a swath. A strip is left free next to neighbouring fields. The high output tedders have special lifting technology. A single-acting spool valve moves the rotors by motion link into the horizontal position and then raises them.

isruption to global supply chains means fewer new tractors are being registered in the UK. Some 938 machines were registered in June – 36% lower than in the same month last year. Registrations in June 2021 were unusually high. This year’s total is towards the bottom end of the range seen for the same month in recent years, although the extended Bank Holiday weekend at the start of the month may have had some impact. The number of new machines registered during the first half of 2022 reached 6,420 – some 6% fewer than the same period last yearm, despite strong demand. That said, registrations for the year to date remain 6% above the five-year average.

Has digital twin technology come of age?

E

xperts say data can help farmers reduce risk and uncertainty – helping producers increase their profits by modelling “what if?” scenarios . Ways of creating digital models by combining environmental and financial data will be discussed at this autumn’s Agri-TechE REAP conference on 8 November. With the theme Making Sense of Agriculture, the event will include a keynote speech by Elizabeth Fastiggi, head of worldwide business development for agriculture at Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Robotics Ms Fastiggi sees automation playing an increasingly important role in agriculture – especially with the broader adoption of robotics and computer vision in farming. Belinda Clarke, director of the business networking organisation Agri-TechE, said: “Progressive farmers in our membership, want to use their data for smart decision support and to increase automation on-farm.

The Small Robot Company is rolling out its technology commercially

“The technology to create digital twins for farms, that show in multiple dimensions the environmental impacts, how the system works, business revenues and nutrient flows – and, crucially, where everything is located – are fast becoming a reality, but there are still technology hurdles and gaps. “Universal internet connectivity and interoperability are among the big ones, but there is also the matter of human interpretation of the models by those who know and understand the land and livestock. It is vital that the technology is farmer-centric.”

A good example of this trend is the Small Robot Company, which is rolling out its ‘perplant’ farming service commercially – just five years after it first debuted its concept in the REAP Start-up Showcase. Small Robot Company co-founder Sam Watson Jones said: “Very soon it will be unusual for a farmer to take any decision on their farm without the support of artifical intelligence – and for a farmer to apply a blanket application of anything in their field.” For full conference details and tickets, please visit reapconference.co.uk.

Heatwave fuels demand for grain cooling systems

C

rop storage specialists Martin Lishman say more customers are opting to increase the cooling power in their stores following the summer weather. Ensuring optimal ventilation of stored crops with a powerful airflow will help drive temperatures down as fast as possible, says the company, which has almost 50 years experience in grain storage technology A suitable automatic fan control system can be equally as important in taking advantage of low ambient temperatures to cool grain and will significantly reduce the energy needed to do so. The company’s products in-

clude the award-winning Barn Owl Wireless automatic fan control and crop monitoring system and the Pile-Dry Pedestal and Fan crop cooling system. Martin Lishman Pile-Dry pedestals are one of the fastest vertical crop cooling system on the market, operating at 20% above the required rate.

Crop quality Pile-Dry pedestals cools grain straight off the combine to avoid insects and harmful moulds. Fans suck cool air through the stored crop and extract the warm air out of the heap to achieve safe storage conditions. The Pile-Dry pedestal design

is modular, so it can be placed in almost any existing grain store, even at depths deeper than 17m. This enables farmers and store managers to customise the system to suit their own individual requirements. Martin Lishman describes its Green Pile-Dry low volume grain cooling fans as the ultimate in fast cooling performance. With highly efficient IE3 motors and uprated design to ensure long lasting reliability, when used in conjunction with Pile-Dry pedestals farmers can cool crops faster and more energy efficiently while preserving crop quality in all sizes of store and all bulk stored crops.

Top tips for pedestals and fans • Use at least one fan for every four pedestals • For faster cooling, increase the number of fans per pedestal • Move fans between pedestals as the crop cools • Use automatic fan control to save on energy costs

“One of the simplest ways to improve the effectiveness of a pedestal cooling system is to use more fans,” says managing director Gavin Lishman.

Hotter weather “It is not uncommon to swap fans between pedestals when required, but this slows down the cooling process and requires more frequent temperature checks. “Using one fan per pedestal ensures the cooling power is instantly available when needed and significantly reduces the possibility of hot spots in the grain or forgetting to move fans around.” With higher-than-normal summer temperatures, frequently monitoring the grain to ensure the temperature is consistent throughout the store is crucial to preventing any form of deterioration. An automatic fan controller can bring many benefits. Automatically turning cooling fans on and off to make the best use of ambient air conditions ensures the fastest cooling possible but can also save at least 40% of energy costs. Grain cleaner and grader adds value to postharvest crops • Cost-effective crop processing • Interest from range of farmers • Different versions for all needs

G

rain specialist McArthur Agriculture has included the JCM VibroMAX Grader from JK Machinery as a key component of its growing equipment line-up. Managing director John McArthur says the company’s extensive range of vibrating sieve cleaners and graders meets the needs of farmers and commercial operators looking to process combinable crops at capacities up to 100 tonnes per hour. Grain being cleaned is moved across vibrating sieves and separated according to size before entering an aspirator where it is separated by weight and aerodynamic properties. Vibration technology delivers simple-to-control high output processing with low energy requirements, on a small footprint.

We have a demonstration lab at our depot. As expected, high levels of interest in the VibroMAX Grader have come from farmers who have already started to introduce intercropping into rotations, says Mr McArthur. Intercropping – crops grown together – can deliver physiological benefits including, improved pest and disease resistance, greater water and nutrient utilisation and improved weed suppression, he explaine. “The separation of these mixed crops has typically been achieved on old cleaning equip14 Anglia Machinery August 2022

ment or second-hand systems pressed into service to support on farm trials. “As trials are scaled up, greater investment is often required in the post-harvest processing and separation. “The VibroMAX Grader fits the bill for those farmers who now need higher capacity solutions that provide the best cleaning and grading results.” The larger JCM VibroMAX 10133G is a triple decked machine. Equipped with three sieves, it cleans and separate crops in a single pass at up to 40 tonnes per hour. Each crop is aspirated individually to ensure the best results.

Two sieves The already popular JCC VibroCompact 08, with two sieve decks, is designed to meet the needs of farmers who are starting to introduce intercropping. It has the capacity to clean up to 15 tonnes per hour. This grader can be used for both standard cleaning applica-

tions and the grading of intercrops. Repeat processing may be necessary to achieve the best results. It is a versatile machine aimed at those starting post-harvest processing experiments. With both the VibroMAX and VibroCompact, cleaning and grading can be controlled through the changing of sieves and adjustment of several process variables, including machine angle and vibration frequency.

“When processing crops the variability that exists within a field and even the ear quickly becomes evident,” explains Mr McArthur. “We have built a demonstration lab at our Scunthorpe depot to give farmers the opportunity to assess the performance of the VibroMAX and the VibroCompact – enabling them to select the most suitable specification. “The lab will play a key role in helping farmers to achieve the best possible post-harvest processing results by maximising the value of their crops.”

‘Investment will deliver increased returns’ Farmer James Hopkinson, co-founder of Arable Ventures & Cloud Farming, is harvesting his first intercropped fields of pea/barley and spring wheat/ linseed this summer. “We had already invested in a JCC VibroCompact 08 to clean milling oats and linseed and have also used it for cleaning home saved seed beans, linseed, oats, wheat and barley and it has delivered excellent results,” says Mr Hopkinson. With customer specifications tightening on his milling oat contracts, the VibroCompact allows Mr Hopkinson to avoid significant financial penalties

for delivering grain which does not meet the required cleaning specifications. In addition, the ability to turn around home saved seed quickly by having his own cleaning system has proved very valuable. “Our investment in the VibroCompact will deliver increased returns,” says Mr Hopkinson. “We will now benefit from its cleaning and grading functionality to separate our post-harvest intercrops – creating added value crops and improving the environmental credentials across our farming businesses.”

Performance boost for large square baler

M

assey Ferguson has unveiled a series of enhancements to improve its popular MF 2200 Series large square balers. As well as being easier to operate using the new MF BaleCreate terminal display, the latest balers now inherit low maintenance, robust components from the high capacity MF Ultra HD model. The machines also come equipped with new running gear, a higher capacity pick-up and stronger, more durable components, says Jérôme Aubrion, Massey Ferguson’s marketing director for Europe and the Middle East. “Massey Ferguson’s MF 2200 Series set the large square baler standard. The balers have a great reputation among professional users for not only reliability and their ability to make consistent, high quality bales, but also delivering low ownership costs.” The new balers benefit from a

range of new components, already proven on the Massey Ferguson MF Ultra HD models, which further improve durability.

Capacity and performance “Throughout the machine, numerous other updates boost capacity and performance,” adds Mr Aubrion.

The new axles make the MF 2200 Series balers now less than 3m wide on the largest tyres. A new model numbering system matches the existing bale sizes in imperial measurements. All the balers are equipped as standard with the Packer feeding system, while the ProCut Cutter is an option for all, apart from the
