Power company reaches out with harvest safety reminder

F

armers and contractors are being reminded to take care when working near overhead power lines this harvest. UK Power Networks – the UK’s biggest electricity distributor – is sending safety advisors to a series of NFU pre-harvest events being held on farms across eastern England including Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. The company, which distributes electricity to 8.4 million properties, said it wanted to remind farmers that contact with high voltage electricity cables can be fatal. The main risk is farm machinery coming into contact with overhead power lines. Power Networks safety adviser Ros Forbes said: “We are pleased to be working closely with the NFU to be able to reach out directly to farmers and get

across safety messaging which could potentially save lives. “Around a fifth of all contact with high voltage electrical equipment on our networks involves the agricultural industry –– meaning farmers are at risk of injury or even death so we are

determined to raise awareness of the potential dangers on their land. Charles Hesketh, NFU regional policy manager for East Anglia, said: “Agriculture has one of the worst track records for accidents of any industry and sadly the number of fatalities year on year is not coming down. Mr Hesketh said he was delighted that UK Power Networks was support the NFU across East Anglia – reaching around 700 farmers just ahead of the busy harvest period when combines, tractors and telehandlers would be out in full force. “Sharing information and providing clarity and solutions to both prevent incidents from happening in the first place and guidance if the worst were to happen will prove to be invaluable for both keeping on the lights and keeping our farmers safe.”

Harvest safety tips

• Plan ahead. Mark overhead

and underground power cables on farm maps and inform all staff, contractors and visitors of where they are

of the force’s Acquisitive Crime Team, he was involved in surveillance and covert operations tackling organised vehicle theft and burglaries. The unit, which is funded by leading rural insurer NFU Mutual, co-ordinates intelligence on stolen farm machinery between

assey Ferguson has passed a major milestone – producing one million tractors at its Beauvais factory in France. The AGCO brand has manufactured tractors in Beauvais since 1960. The one millionth machine – an MF 8S.305 Dyna-VT – was delivered to arable farmer Thierry Aubrée in the village of La Chapelle des Fougeretz in Brittany. AGCO president Thierry Lhotte said: “Our Beauvais Massey Ferguson Global Home has grown continuously over the past 62 years, working with and for farmers. police forces across the UK and joins forces on raids to recover stolen machinery. In 2021 NaVCIS recovered agricultural vehicles worth £2.6m, up from £2.3m in 2020. Mr Mills said: “We want to build on our work with NFU Mutual to increase security and awareness amongst the farming community and regularly engage with manufacturers to encourage best practice and design out theft.”

Farm security NFU Mutual agricultural engineering manager Bob Henderson said: “Thefts from farms are extremely expensive, disruptive and upsetting for farmers. That’s why NFU Mutual supported farmers by investing £430,000 in rural security initiatives last year. “Adrian’s appointment will enable the unit to expand the work it does. That’s particularly important in the current climate as we have concerns that farm equipment could come under attack as the effects of inflation and higher prices bite.” Mr Mills will be working with

detective constable Chris Piggott, who trains police officers in identification of agricultural and plant machinery, supporting pre-planned warrants and conducting ports operations on a regular basis.

Huge boost Mr Piggott said: “Adrian’s wealth of experience tackling acquisitive crime is a huge boost to NaVCIS and will mean we can do far more to prevent farmers’ machinery from being stolen and bring criminals to justice. “While we’re now seeing fewer tractors being stolen, quad bikes are currently the top piece of kit on rural thieves’ shopping lists, followed by all-terrain vehicles and trailers. Thieves are also continuing to target high-value GPS guidance systems. Farmers are advised to take all possible steps to secure farm equipment. This includes measures such as always removing keys from machines, security marking, installing tracking devices and immobilisers. For more on farm vehicle theft, see page 7

Preparation key to outsmarting farm thieves, says Tracker

G

lobal demand for new parts and a soaring second-hand machinery market are continuing to put agricultural vehicles and equipment at risk. Farmers should remain extra vigilant when it comes to protecting vehicles and machinery this summer, say stolen vehicle recovery experts Tracker Network. It follows police operations to outsmart criminal gangs targeting farm equipment. Clive Wain, head of police liaison at Tracker, said: “Continued lack of parts for new vehicle and equipment manufacturing is severely impacting delivery wait times for the farming community. “This in turn has resulted in a surge in sales in the secondhand market and rocketing pric-

es along with it. Unsurprisingly, professional thieves have been eager to take advantage of this lucrative opportunity.”

Vehicle theft While highly-organised criminals have always plagued rural farmyards – targeting popular 4x4s – Land Rover and Range Rover models accounted for a recordbreaking 44% of all stolen cars recovered by Tracker last year. The company is now warning that combine harvesters, horse boxes and tractors are also being stolen to order – as well as smaller, high-value pieces of equipment. The value of GPS kits, for example, almost doubled last year to £2.9m. Mr Wain said farmers should take as many precautions as pos-

sible to help keep equipment safe. This included removing any equipment from combines and tractors and storing it somewhere secure. Farmers should also get their equipment security marked, said Mr Wain. This would make it harder to sell on – and therefore make it less attractive to thieves.

CCTV could also be a wise investment to visibly deter criminals. Physical deterrents – including secure storage facilities, hitch locks, wheel clamps, alarm systems and deadbolts – could reduce the chance of theft. But only a tracking device would improve the chances of recovery if if was stolen.

New canvas web to solve modern harvesting problems

A

lightweight canvas web introduced by Jones Engineering aims to minimise damage to soil and root crops during harvesting. “Agricultural machinery is getting bigger, meaning machines are increasing in weight,” says sales manager Mark Clayton. “This causes potential damage to soil and crops during harvesting, making it harder for farmers to meet tight and demanding schedules.” Jones Engineering is a family-owned company specialising in the manufacture of vegetable farming machinery. It started manufacturing potato and carrot toppers in 1987, and now produces machinery for every part of the root crop season.

Growing problems “During harvest season, we see a lot of customers looking for larger machinery as they increase their output to meet new schedules. However, as the machines get bigger, so does weight in the field.” This can make harvesting more difficult and potentially cause soil damage. To help solve weight issues, Mr Clayton realised

Jones Engineering now uses lighter canvas webs

Griff’s canvas webs were the way forward for his root crop harvesters. “A lot of our customers were looking for something more lightweight to use in the field. They wanted to move high value crops from one place to another, and they wanted to do this quickly and efficiently. “However, we found some webs actually moved too quickly for the harvested vegetables, which was causing damage to the harvest. This meant there was a need for a lighter web that moved at the right speed, to ensure maximum efficiency and quality output.” The Griff canvas is significantly lighter than traditional steel, meaning our customers are able to have bigger machines, without having to increase the weight so significantly,” explains Mr Clayton.

Proper solution “These new webs also don’t have the solid

sides that a lot of other webs have, reducing the overall weight and giving our customers the ideal opportunity to switch to something that will improve harvest.” “We’re also keen to fly the British flag at Jones Engineering, with more and more parts coming from other countries reducing the number of manufacturers in the UK. We believe in encouraging the use of British products, like Griff’s canvas webs, in our machinery.” “We’ve seen companies who use the new canvas webs have a significantly increased output. One of our customers purchased two machines from us – one with Griff’s canvas web and one without.” The machine with the canvas web produced 25% higher output than the other. “We’d definitely recommend machinery with Griff’s canvas web to ensure a higher output for farmers looking to make a change.”

Grimme and Haith unveil vision for optical sorting

n innovative mobile optical sorter capable of handling up to 100 tonnes of potatoes every hour has been developed by Grimme UK and the Haith Group Designed to automate the removal of stone, clod and foreign debris from potatoes – and help growers cope with labour shortages – demonstrations of the new Pro Sort are being organised for the coming months. At the heart of the Pro Sort is a Tomra 3A optical sorter. It employs Near Infra-Red multi-spectral sensors for an unobstructed assessment of every object ‘in flight’, seamlessly identifying between potatoes and foreign material. potatoes. Like the debris, they are removed at the end of the conveyor belt by finger ejectors. The Pro Sort is a modular unit, so it can be used either in the field or in a new or existing grading line.

“We have developed the Pro Sort in response to the increasing number of growers who are finding it incredibly difficult to find people to sort and pick their crop before it goes into store or is delivered to processors,” says Duane Hill, Haith’s managing director.

“We have a proven track record of developing innovative mobile washing and grading equipment and having integrated the Tomra 3A into many of our grading projects, it was logical to put it at the heart of this unit.” The new unit can be used in conjunction with the Grimme RH receiving hopper to transfer potatoes into store and the Grimme Cleanloader, said Grimme UK managing director Patrick Graf Grote. “We have developed a solution that will save growers both time and money. Having spoken to several customers, we are confident it will be very well received and the demonstration days later in the year will be very popular.”

FarmDroid scoops innovation award

A

solar-powered robot capable of precision drilling and weeding sugar beet won a silver innovation award at last month’s Royal Highland Show. The FarmDroid uses ultraaccurate GPS to record exactly where it places each seed. Because it knows where each seed has been planted, the machine can then weed around them – keeping crops clean using a combination of hoes and blades. This approach means the FarmDroid doesn’t need banks of high-definition cameras and complex computers to distinguish between plants and weeds. It also means the machine can start weeding before crops have emerged. The Danish-made machine is imported and distributed in the UK by Opico. It received a highly respected Silver Award for Innovation by the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland. Opico managing director

The FarmDroid is a highly accurate robotic seeder and weeder

James Woolway said the machine was suited to farms of all sizes. “While it’s early days, we’re coming to the UK market with a product that is tried and tested – there are over 200 machines already in use around Europe.” Mr Woolway added: “The timing couldn’t be better with rising energy costs, labour issues and

environmental factors at the forefront of UK farmers’ minds and FarmDroid ticks so many boxes in all these respects. Capable of working to within 5mm of each seedling between the rows and 20mm in the row, FarmDroid means there is no need for hand-rogueing problem weeds like fat-hen. Mr Wool-

way says this in itself represents a saving of more than £250/ha. The FarmDroid is the brainchild of Jens and Kristian Warming – two farming brothers who were tired of hand-hoeing sugar beet. They built the first prototypes in their farm workshop before launching the machine at Agritechnica 2019.

3D ninety nozzle improves blight protection • Optimum droplets for coverage • 90% reduction in drift possible • Accurate application technique

P

otato growers should switch to new Syngenta 3D ninety nozzles to ensure more timely blight applications this season – and achieve the best possible results, says the company’s application specialist Harry Fordham. He highlights the 90% drift reduction nozzles create the optimum droplet spectrum for coverage throughout the crop canopy, including lower leaves and stems where micro-climate conditions can be particularly humid and conducive to blight infection. Three seasons of independent research in the Eurofins evaluation trials have shown the 3D ninety nozzle has repeatedly performed the most effectively for blight control with Revus and Amphore Plus programmes. “More consistent coarser droplet size of the 3D ninety has the momentum to penetrate deeper into the canopy, compared to more drift susceptible fine droplets,” says Mr Fordham. “When that is combined with the 55 degree angle of the nozzle it is especially effective at treating larger crop canopies, such as

potatoes and sugar beet.” The 05 and 06 sizes of the 3D ninety that are most suited to potato blight applications – applying around 200 l/ha water volume at 12-14km/h – offer 90% drift reduction when operated at up to 5 bar pressure. “That provides sprayer operators with the opportunity to fine tune application techniques to achieve spray coverage right through the canopy, while still providing exceptional drift con-

trol and ensuring the maximum protection reaches the leaf surface.” The industry standard demonstrates 90% less drift from the nozzles, compared to a standard flat fan nozzle operated in the same conditions. Persistently windy weather patterns over recent seasons have typically seen just three to five days per month of ideal spraying conditions, particularly in later months of the blight control season. “Reducing drift is essential to ensure spray hits the intended target and is not lost out of the field,” says Mr Fordham.

Spray pattern “Crucially for blight controls, it will also minimise effects of wind gusts that shift the spray pattern and could leave patches of crop less well protected from blight spore infection.” For optimum leaf coverage,

the 3D ninety nozzles should be fitted with the angle alternating forwards and backwards along the boom, says Mr Fordham. The ideal set up is operating at a pressure of 2-3 bar, nozzle height of 50cm above the crop and working at a speed of 12 km/hr or less, he adds. In Revus application trials at Eurofins – artificially inoculated with aggressive blight strains and irrigated to maximise disease development – the 3D ninety nozzle applications kept out blight entirely throughout the treatment season, compared to 3% to 5% infection creeping in with conventional flat fan nozzles. But 21 days after the treatment programme finished, blight was 80% faster to develop in plots treated with flat fan or Syngenta Potato nozzles, compared to those that had been sprayed using 3D ninety nozzles through the season.

Top safety tips from farm sprayer operators Winning ways are good for farm safety – and for the environment

S

prayer operators have been giving their top safety tips – sharing their knowledge and best practice to help enhance results and protect the environment. Finalists in the Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year (FSOOTY) award shared their tips ahead of last month's Cereals event – which saw Northamptonshire operator Steve May scoop the coveted accolade for 2022. “The use of plant protection products is under constant scrutiny – so it's important to use them safely and efficiently in a way that meets crop needs, as well as public, operator and environmental safety,” said Harry Fordham, of award sponsors Syngenta.

Complex challenge "The application of crop protection products is one of the most complex challenges faced on farm. From filling the sprayer, through applying the spray to disposing of the empty containers, the operator is faced with many possible ways of doing the job. “It’s a tricky balance, but for many operators, it comes as second nature. The Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year award aims to recognise this professional approach and help encourage further improvements. “It’s not about having the latest kit. If you can demonstrate ingenuity and an ability to meet these varying objectives by using agrochemicals sensibly, then you are in with a chance of winning." Judge Scott Cockburn said finalists had demonstrated a

WINNER: Steve May, Fromant & Sanders, Kislingbury, Northants Steve May won the award four years after making the top six in 2018. As arable foreman, he does all the spraying on 810ha of all-arable crops on owned and contract farmed land at Fromant & Sanders, Clarkes Lodge, Kislingbury, Northamptonshire. Mr May operates the latest John Deere 36m, 6,000-litre R962i. It includes TwinSelect dual nozzle as well as RTK GPS. Along with automatic boom levelling the sprayer has made job much more precise, as well as more pleasurable. An accomplished operator who is BASIS and FACTS qualified, Steve has now progressed taking further BASIS modules.

Steve’s Top Tip Home-made, extended tractor mudguards protect nozzles and keep the sprayer clean in the field as well as prevent mud being thrown onto traffic on the road.

deep knowledge of sprayer operation and exemplified good practice to consistently achieve optimum results, whilst achieving safe and accurate application. “There are so many good examples and Top Tips to share with other operators across the UK. Elevating the skills and best practice of all farm sprayer operators is an essential step to improving all aspects of application. “Steve stood out for his experience and understanding of his spraying activities and his commitment to continue learning and improving the integration of sprayer operation with the farm’s agronomy.”

FINALIST: Richard Darling, Davison & Co, Great Barford, Bedfordshire

FINALIST: Andrew Manning, Ramridge Farm, Hitchin, Hertfordshire

Richard Darling is responsible for all the spraying and fertiliser applications for Davison & Co, at Green End Farm, Great Barford, Bedfordshire. He operates a 36m, Horsch PT280 to treat 1,400ha of the farm’s own all-arable cropping, along with contract work. For all his applications, Mr Darling uses Lechler, low drift air inclusion nozzles. In the 50cm position, he fits the firm’s IDK single outlet nozzle, which faces straight down. In the 25cm setting he uses the twin outlet IDKT.

Andrew Manning farms in a family partnership at Ramridge Farm, near Hitchin in Hertfordshire, where he looks after 440ha of all-arable cropping as well as the same area of spray contracting. The family has invested in a self-funded purpose-built undercover spray store and filling area, where Mr Manning keeps his 4,000-litre, 36m Knight 18-40 self-propelled sprayer. Everything is safe and secure in one place. It is all fully bunded and drains to a biobed.

Richard’s Top Tip There is no such thing as a ‘silly question’, so never be afraid to ask - that’s how you learn and progress.

Andrew’s Top Tip Investing in the fully bunded store, filling area and undercover area brings peace of mind – improving efficiency, compliance with the rules and protecting the environment. Anglia Machinery July 2022 15
