Ag-inflation forces contractors to increase prices across the field
E
scalating costs are forcing agricultural contractors to increase their prices across a range of services as ag-inflation continues to bite. With fuel prices at record highs and labour and machinery costs escalating, the National Association of Agricultural Contractors said farmers and other customers should expect to pay more. Diesel costs have more than doubled over the past year. Machinery costs have also risen due to higher steel prices. At the same time, wages are increasing due to the higher cost of living. The NAAC’s latest pricing survey was carried out based on a fuel cost of £1/litre. But red diesel prices have since risen. Contractors are being advised to calculate their fees carefully to ensure they are covering costs
and can make a margin. The NAAC said its survey was an average figure and farmers should expect contractor prices to vary, depending on location and service offered. A fuel surcharge may be necessary if prices continue to fluctuate, it added.
Difficult times NAAC chief executive Jill Hewitt said: “These are difficult times for everyone, and it is vital that contractors work closely with their customers to ensure all businesses remain viable and productive. “Profit must not be a dirty word if contractors are to keep pace with new technology, training and investment in their businesses,” she added. Profit was necessary to supply the professionalism, machines and skills increasingly demanded by farmers, said Ms Hewitt.
The NAAC has recently launched a new online pricing guide for its members. Compiled with Andersons Consulting, it allows contractors to evaluate each operation, considering all costs, so they can charge a fair price for each job. The tool takes account of numerous variables such as depreciation and repair costs before breaking each job down, taking into account fuel costs, area of work, work rate, labour, downtime and profit. “Inevitably farmers will get what they pay for in their contractor going forward and if an efficient, professional service, with well-maintained reliable machinery is needed, then a partnership approach will be vital.” The NAAC price guide is at www. naac.co.uk/pricesguide
Profit must not beceme a dirty word, says Jill Hewitt

Quad bike queen opens new premises
Q
uad Bikes R Us owner Kerry Marven was joined by Yamaha UK representatives to officially open her new Essex showroom in Heybridge, near Maldon. The new premises showcases the full range of Yamaha ATV machines including the Wolverine side by side, YXZ 1000R and a selection of quadbikes for adults and juniors. “We are a family run business, here to help anyone who wants to enjoy these exciting machines,” says Ms Marven. “We can advise on which are most suitable for their individual needs, and we have a workshop on site to help existing owners with spares and repairs.” Yamaha UK has worked closely with Kerry to develop the new showroom, which also stocks the full 2022 range of Yamaha riding and leisure apparel. “We have had so much support from the Yamaha team, and I feel we have really improved the business by making this move. The showroom looks amazing, and we have really enjoyed welcoming customers old and new.” While more than happy with her latest move, Ms Marven has aspirations for the business to grow further still. “I have a fantastic team here and I would like to see that grow so that we can one day open the first Yamaha superstore in the region.”

Claas invests €40m to boost production Machinery maker Claas is to invest €40m in its Bad Saulgau production plant – home to its Green Harvest product range, including Jaguar forage harvesters. The company said the investment was in response to increased demand and to allow for future growth. The plant infrastructure is being expanded and upgraded, along with production logistics, assembly optimisation and the energy infrastructure. Claas said it had seen particularly high demand for
its new Orbis maize header, in particular the Orbis 900. It said this necessitated increased production space to meet customer requirements. In view of the global decline in demand for forage wagons, the German manufacturer said it had decided to cease production of its Cargos loader wagon from the end of the 2022 season.

Tractor signals double celebration
M
assey Ferguson is celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a special tractor livery showcasing the colours of the 70th anniversary’s official emblem. Clad in regal purple and metallic platinum, the MF 8S tractor will appear at various key events around the country. It follows its debut outing at the Staffordshire County Show (1-2 June) for the extended Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend. The tour culminates at the Lord Mayor’s Show in London in November. The tractor will take part in the parade alongside the Worshipful Company of Farmers and theNFU supporters as a powerful symbol of British agriculture.
Brand identity “It’s especially exciting as 2022 also marks the 175th anniversary of Massey Ferguson,” explained Lindsay Haddon, of Massey Ferguson.
The Queen and Massey Ferguson are both celebrating anniversaries this year
The Platinum Jubilee MF 8S features examples of MF logos over the course of the company’s history. The nine logos reflect the evolution of the brand identity
from the mid-19th century to the present day. Since its launch in July 2020, MF 8S Series has claimed some of the world’s top prizes for farm
machinery. Accolades include Tractor of the Year 2021, the Red Dot Product Design Award 2021, the AE50 Award 2022 and Farm Machine Award 2022.

JCB targets beet hauliers with giant loader
S
ugar beet hauliers are among the target market for JCB’s new 20-tonne 457S agricultural wheeled loader range. The flagship machine, which is capable of handing 6t payloads, joins JCB’s top-end 419S and 435S wheeled loaders purposebuilt for agricultural applications that include sugar beet loading and large-scale contract silage and muck spreading teams. While it shares some elements of the established JCB 457 used for stockpiling and loading out of large bulk commodity stores, JCB says the ‘S’ version has a new rear chassis and counterweight, and new transmission, axles, wheels and tyres. JCB Agriculture managing director John Smith said the new machine underlined the company’s commitment to developing purpose-built high-capacity wheeled loaders for efficient and highly productive bulk loading
and handling. “The new 457S loading shovel is an important addition to our range, providing a further step up in bulk loading performance with tremendous pushing power to meet the requirements of operators carrying out the most demanding applications.”
Powershift transmission At the heart of the loader is a new powershift transmission with six forward and three reverse ratios, with torque converter lock-up giving direct mechanical drive available in all six forward gears as the standard configuration. Alternatively, the operator can use a new menu on the incab settings and operator information display to select torque converter lock-up in any reverse gear and any of the lowest three forward gears to suit different applications and driver preferences. Mr Smith said: “JCB has al-

ways strived to build the best, most productive machines for agriculture. With its exceptional power, torque, tractive performance and ease of use, the new JCB 457S epitomises that endeavour.” The combination of direct mechanical drive, close-ratio gearbox and class-leading 14hp per tonne power-to-weight ratio makes full use of the 282hp (210kW) and 1,200Nm peak torque of the 6.7-litre six-cylin-
der Cummins B6.7 engine. For less demanding materials handling applications, the operator can revert to the default standard power output of 224hp (167kW) to save fuel, with auto engine shut-down after a period at idle, also contributing to overall fuel economy. A new rear chassis design provides increased fuel storage capacity of 400 litres to keep the loader running during a busy schedule of heavy loading.
Sheep handling yard for smaller flocks
A
new mobile sheep handling system for small and medium-sized flocks is now available in the UK. The new Prattley P8 Intermediate Mobile Yard comprises an 8ft handling race with a guillotine-style drop-in gate and side drafting gate. It is available from distributors Allflex Livestock Intelligence. In its standard specification, the P8 comes with eight 7ft by 3ft lightweight alloy gates capable of holding up to 100 sheep. The system’s main race frame and chassis can carry an additional eight gates (16 in total), to hold up to 200 sheep. The strong yet lightweight, easy to use system is mounted on ATV (all-terrain vehicle) floatation tyres. These provide a useful amount of suspension when travelling across rough ground. The 8 Anglia Machinery June 2022
system is designed to be towed behind an ATV. Retractable lifting arms enable one person to quickly and easily mount and de-mount the handling race on and off its wheels, with no winching mechanism needed due to the system’s light weight.
Affordable choice “As the smallest mobile sheep handling system in the Prattley range, the P8 is the affordable choice for small to medium sized flocks or in situations where the flock manager is working alone,” says Chris Byrne, Allflex livestock specialist. The P8 can also easily be towed to hard-to-access locations and erected quickly. “Its strong, yet lightweight construction makes removal and fitting of the transportation wheels easy for one person to do alone.”

Discover benefits of land forming at show
T
he benefits of land forming will be highlighted at this month’s Cereals event, due to be held on 8-9 June at Duxford, Cambridgeshire. Trenching manufacturer and drainage experts Mastenbroek will turn their attention to the relatively new concept of land forming and land levelling as part of the National Association of Agricultural Contractors’ Land Drainage Hub. Land forming uses a GPS survey to identify uneven areas of a field. Survey data is used to scrape the soil from higher areas of the field into lower areas to produce an optimum surface. Combined with a drainage scheme, the land becomes more productive, generating better yields for farmers. Land forming is commonplace in the United States and Europe but is yet to take off in the UK. Mastenbroek commercial director Christopher Pett and technical director Fred Clarke will be
on stand 405a at Cereals to talk more about the concept. The Cereals event takes place on 8-9 June at Duxford, Cambridgeshire. AMS Contracting recently won a significant land forming contract with G’s Fresh. It is currently the only contractor in the UK using the Mastenbroek-sup-
plied Trimble FieldLevel II system to generate cut and fill maps for farmland. Established by Ashley and Myles Strange in 2011, AMS Contracting began life as a specialist big bale contractor. But the company moved into drainage and land forming in 2017.
AMS Contracting will be working on 7.5 hectares of land to optimise salad production using a scraper equipped with the Trimble GPS system. It will survey the field and form the field in line with its natural contours in such a way to eliminate ponding.

GROUNDSWELL 2022
Direct drills on demonstration at Groundswell event • Drilling into established cover crops • Inter-row hoe showcased in wheat • 175 speakers from across the world
M
achines from 15 manufacturers will take part in a working demonstration at this month’s Groundswell event, due to take part on 22-23 June. Hosted by the Cherry family, Groundswell takes place at Lannock Manor Farm, Weston, near Hitchin, Hertfordshire. The demonstration field at the show will see machines drilling into an established cover crop/ weed mixture. An inter-row hoe will be showcased in a nearby wheat crop and the Composting Zone will demonstrate various composting techniques. Hundreds of exhibitors and speakers will also attend the event – the UK’s biggest regenerative agriculture show.
Scientific approach With travel restrictions eased after the Covid pandemic, Groundswell 2022 is shaping up to the most exciting event yet, says John Cherry. It will include some
12 Anglia Machinery June 2022
of the world’s most experienced and knowledgeable experts in notill farming and soil health. “We’ve been inundated with ideas for sessions from across science, farming, environment and food sectors. We only have two days to fit them all into but we’re building an additional session venue this year and we’ll be recording sessions to go online.” Special speakers this year include Dwayne Beck from Dakota Lakes Research Farm in South Dakota; principal scientist and Rhizoterra Inc owner Jill Clapperton; and Missouri livestock farmer Greg Judy.
Conservation farming Despite the event’s growing popularity – Groundswell attracted over 3,500 visitors in 2021 – it continues to be rooted in the underlying principles of regenerative agriculture. The show offers a combination of thought-provoking and practical content. The seminar programme
contains a breadth and depth of topics ranging from big-picture conversations, such as livestock’s impact on global warming, to deeply scientific sessions on subjects such as soil ecology. But Mr Cherry says most important are the farmers themselves. “At its core, Groundswell is an event ‘by farmers, for farmers’ and most of the programme con-
tinues to explore ways of working with nature to grow food profitably. “Perhaps the most exciting aspect of Groundswell are the informal conversations that take place. Bringing together some of the most innovative farmers for two days, inevitably leads to some fascinating first-hand stories, ideas generation and learning opportunities.”
All about Groundswell Groundswell takes place on 22-23 June at Lannock Manor Farm, Hitchin. The main sessions and demonstrations start at 10am on Wednesday 22 June and finish at 6pm the following day. Tickets are £80 for a single day or £120 for both days (+VAT). Students are eligible for a 20% discount and a 10% discount applies on group tickets over 10 people. The Earthworm Arms Bar and accompanying array of food and drink traders will be operating the nights of 21st, 22nd and 23rd. All attendees are invited to stay and enjoy the evenings. The SSAW Collective of chefs, florists and growers committed to an ethical way of working with seasonal produce will host a three-course long table banquet at 7pm on 21 and 22 June. The popular Groundswell Campsite will open at 4pm on Tuesday 21 June. It will close at noon on Friday 24 June. Luxury bell tents are available to book via the Woodville Project through the Groundswell website Camping passes to use hot showers and facilities are £20 (+VAT) per person. LAMMA 2022
LAMMA brings farming industry back together
T
housands of farmers and exhibitors flocked to the Birmingham NEC for the 40th year of the LAMMA farm machinery show last month. After a two-year hiatus due to Covid, visitors and exhibitors alike were optimistic about the event ‘s return. Visitors took advantage of numerous features and scheduled speakers as well as visiting the stands. Lynx Engineering managing director Nick Ewbank said: “We have been coming to LAMMA since it first started and are very happy it’s back. I have been really impressed with turnout and happy to have had some international visitors to our stand as well.” John Christofides, regional sales director at Bobcat EMEA, said: “There was a good flow of people throughout the two days with a great deal of good, genuine interest in our products. Our team have been very happy with the quality of conversations we had with visitors.” The Farm Safety Zone and the International Export Advice Centre once again presented the latest advice and developments to help farmers protect their staff and grow their businesses. In addition to this, there were also several new additions to the
line-up. They included the Farming 4.0 Trail, LAMMA365 Dealer and Speaker Zones and Fendt & Valtra Speaker Zone – all of which brought more expertise, kit and
policy to the event. Speaker sessions proved popular with visitors, covering a wide range of topics including driving license requirements, careers, farm safety, second-hand machinery and business opportunities abroad. A lively session about the future for red diesel gave visitors a chance to ask HMRC representatives about recent legislation changes and clarify uncertainties, including the definition of ‘permitted’ vehicles and ‘per-
mitted’ usage More than 600 exhibitors set up stands, and several used the show to unveil their latest products to the industry. “Virtually every product we have here at the show is new,” said Ben Agar, business development director for Argo. It which launched two new tractors at the show, including the McCormick X6.4HD. Next year’s LAMMA show will return to its usual slot in the agricultural calendar at the NEC from 10-11 January 2023.
