Agri-tech ‘held back by lack of knowledge’ • Technology often more sustainable • Farmers want to invest in agri-tech • Half prepared to use robot tractors
L
ack of knowledge is holding farmers back when it comes to investing in the latest agricultural technology, says a study. Hot on the heels of the latest government grants to help farmers purchase high-tech machinery that improves productivity, an NFU Mutual survey suggests many farmers need more information about the costs and the potential benefits. Almost half (46.2%) of all respondents to an NFU Mutual survey said they didn’t know enough
about agri-tech to make an investment decision. Lack of access to finance (29.8%) was also a factor, followed by uncertainty about the future (17.1%). The 2022 Agri-tech Report also reveals that just under half of all farmers (46.9%) would consider using autonomous agricultural vehicles on their farm, while 13.9% said they were planning to invest in agri-tech this year. NFU Mutual farm insurance specialist Charlie Yorke said: “While many farmers are open to using technology, lack of un-

derstanding of new technologies and the investment they entail, means they are hesitating to take the plunge. Mr Yorke added: “Understandably, there’s a real fear among farmers that they could make the wrong tech-choice for their farm – and end up with an expensive system that becomes outdated quickly. “To make the right investment, farmers need to work closely with system suppliers, leading agricultural colleges, and other farmers to make sure they make the best
decisions for their business.” Technology was set to revolutionise farming – and increase productivity, said Mr Yorke. Holding back ran the risk of falling behind as global competition increased and UK farming support changed. The report covers the latest farm technology developments – from poultry house automation and vertical farming to non-fossil fuel use and robotic tractor developments – as well as advice for farmers contemplating agri-tech investment.

Finance scheme for new square baler
F
Tramspread’s contractor pump trailer twin axle makes life easier when it comes to slurry
Anniversary year for Suffolk slurry specialist
S
uffolk-based slurry equipment manufacturer and contractor Tramspread is still seeing increasing demand – 25 years after introducing its contractor engine driven pump unit (EDPU). Tramspread started umbilical contracting with a single axle EDPU that enabled one tractor to carry everything needed, says managing director Terry Baker. Ten years later, it introduced its random wrap hose reel. “Our contracting trailers were modified to carry 1000 metres of detachable hose reel spool and were equipped with a front threepoint linkage – allowing us to carry the random wrap reel coupled with a further 1000m of hose on the front of the tractor.”
The trailer evolved to a twin axle model which was introduced in 2012. It has an extended chassis enabling it to carry two 1000m detachable hose reel spools. A further 1000m can be carried on the front three-point linkage to provide a total of 3000 metres.
Top dressing Using the contractor trailer, today, Tramspread applies more than 450,000 cubic metres of slurry and digestate, with up to 70% being applied in the spring as a top dressing. Slurry applications are monitored and recorded using John Deere’s Green Star, a Krone flow meter and Ravenbox software linked to the tractor’s ISOBUS. This allows the applied rate per
hectare and total cubic metres applied to be recorded. An AGROS N testing kit, Tramspread means can advise its customers of the applied available nitrogen per hectare too. Tramspread manufactured the first random wrap hose reel in 2007 after Mr Baker had seen similar units being used in Holland. The reel is made with a twin hydraulic motor drive and drop out spools. “This allows one three-point linkage frame to handle many spools.” At the same time, Tramspread introduced its Storz hose end couplings, which revolutionised the laying out and picking up of the drag hose. This removed the need to couple and uncouple every 200m length of hose.
armers and contractors can take advantage of new 0% finance deal on Kuhn’s range of square balers with a scheme that runs until the end of April. The three-year 0% offer can be used against 50% of the list price of Kuhn SB model square balers – including the Kuhn SB 1290 iD baler which features the patented TwinPact double plunger system. The TwinPact system increases the force applied to the surface of the bale to produce denser bales using a machine load comparable to a conventional baler with the traditional single plunger design. Kuhn says its finance scheme requires 1+3 annual payments and is open to all business users. The machinery maker says it also offer tailored finance plans for a range of equipment for different business cashflows.
The three-year 0% scheme runs to the end of April.
100th Claas Jaguar TT rolls off production line
T
he 100th TerraTrac version of the Claas Jaguar forage harvester has rolled off the production line in Germany – just three years after it was launched. The TerraTrac track system partly lifts one end of the tracks to avoid scuffing when turning – avoiding ruts and soil compaction when harvesting in wet conditions, especially in late maize. A headland protection function sees two central support rollers extend downwards hydraulically, reducing the length of the contact area significantly so that 4 Anglia Machinery March 2022
the tracks have much less contact with the ground when turning. The smooth ride has made the TerraTrac a popular choice in the USA – the machine’s biggest market. It is popular on larger farms where it crosses flood irrigation ridges and ruts with ease, including where the crops have been irrigated using centre pivots. The 100th machine is being shipped to a customer in the USA. Claas offers the TerraTract crawler units for two models – the Jaguar 960 and the Jaguar 990 with respective maximum outputs of 653 and 925 hp.
The 100th machine is due to be shipped to the USA

More accuracy and efficiency from Kverneland Geospread
A
dvances in disc spreader technology have seen Kverneland introduce several new developments. The first is an integrated hydraulic driveline called intelligent Disc Control (iDC). Currently available only for the Exacta TL GeoSpread model, the iDC version uses two individually controlled hydraulic motors – one to power each disc.
Sophisticated driveline This sophisticated driveline enables independent disc speed regulation on left and right-hand discs, opening up a range of possibilities for even greater application accuracy. With headlands accounting for up to 54% of a field’s total area, there is a requirement for enhanced spread pattern control during border spreading. It’s
not just on the headland side, but also in-field when border spreading where the full spread pattern has to be maintained. Kverneland says the iDC is able to deliver a more consistent disc speed, which is maintained through disc speed monitoring. Tractor fuel efficiency gains are possible as a result of using much lower engine revs when spreading. The iDC spreader is for rear linkage use only, and is priced from £28,849. Capability has been added to Kverneland’s weigh cell-equipped Exacta models, enabling the CL GeoSpread, TL GeoSpread and TLX GeoSpread to now be used in a front- and rear-mounted disc spreader combination.

front-mounted implement is now easily set and conveniently managed through any universal terminal. This flexibility can create payloads of up to 7,000 litres from combining front and rear hopper capacities, and also offers the ability to make two separate applications with different ferti-
liser products, in one pass. Should the tractor lack a front PTO, the GeoSpread models can also be equipped with an optional central hydraulic driveline to replace the PTO shaft. The border spreading device can be specified for mounting on the left or right of the spreader.

TECHNOLOGY
Mix of fuels will power tractors of the future • Lower emissions and lower inputs • Renewable energy using batteries • Hydrogen and methane power too
T
ractors of the future will be a mix of fuel types and innovative technology – with two key drivers: lower emissions and precision farming. That’s according to Mike Woollacott, managing director of Greenwatt Technology, who believes machines will be fuelled by a mixture of renewable electricity via batteries, hydrogen and methane – at least in the relatively short-term Mr Woollacott will be exploring applications for on-farm renewable energy – including transport – at next month’s Low Carbon Agriculture show, due to take place on 8-9 March at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. “Tractors below 50 horsepower can be battery-powered, and I see these being multi-tooled, with bolt on and off systems,” he says. “There will be a rise of smaller machines and robots specifically developed for precision techniques.
Some caveats “For larger vehicles, if we can’t replace a high-power fuel like die-
sel with a battery, we need something that can replace it,” says Mr Woollacott. Hydrogen has the power – but there are some caveats. These include supply issues. Farms could produce their own hydrogen via electrolysis using renewable electricity from solar or wind to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. But it is currently expensive to justify at farm scale. Hydrogen fuel cell powered systems may not be ideally suited to operate well under vibration and dusty field conditions. “Perhaps a hydrogen and battery hybrid will provide the solution of adequate power with zero emissions.” Biomethane sourced from upgraded biogas from on farm anaerobic digesters is already available but this solution depends on access to gas powered tractors and enough AD units. “Ultimately, tractors of the future could all look very different.” Cheaper and more efficiency batteries and alternative fuels in the automotive industry should spill over into the prospects for
Methane-powered machines are already commercially available
tractors and other agricultural machinery, says Neil Wallis, of the Zemo Partnership, which encourages zero emission transport.
Some caveats Using less energy and inputs is expected to be a core tenet of future product design, says Mr Wallis. Farmers will be encouraged to switch from heavier equipment to improve efficiency and reduce soil compaction, he adds. “There are an array of opportunities connected with the production of renewable energy, especially wind and solar, by farmers which, ultimately may be used in transport, either directly as electricity or renewablysourced hydrogen.” Another opportunity for farmers is the evolution of rural charging infrastructure, where the agricultural industry could be
central, explains Lisa Howkins at NFU Energy. It has launched a number of renewable energy solutions – including for electric cars. “We have partnered with three specialists in this area to ensure we can cater for the entire farming community. Our services cover, standalone chargers, multiple same-site chargers, and landleasing arrangements.” These agreements give landowners the opportunity to earn a rental income by providing drivers with access to the fastest chargers available. A dedicated conference session at the event will cover low emission vehicles and machinery. For full details, and to book your place, visit www.lowcarbonagricultureshow.co.uk.
Horsch launches ‘digital intelligence’ for farming
M
achinery manufacturer Horsch has launched a new digital product it says makes the exchange of data between machine and customer as efficient as possible. Called HorschConnect, the company says the technology also maintains better links between customer, dealer and Horsch itself – whether locating the position of a machine in the field or controlling a seed drill with a smartphone app. The increasing digitalisation of Horsch machines – using the HorschConnect Telematics Por8 Anglia Machinery March 2022
tal to record telemetry data – optimises the flow of information to ensure customers are better informed, says the company. HorschConnect enables the operator to see realtime machine information, such as operational speed or application rate, in a user-friendly format.
Remote diagnostics Instructions can be sent to the machine to optimise working processes and efficiency. Remote diagnostics of machine information and error messages allow for a more targeted service.
The MobileControl app allows the comfort and convenience of controlling the machine via a smartphone and is designed to make work easier. It means a machine can be calibrated quickly and intuitively via the app and all the product information is available to hand. Using an integrated WLAN and GPS modem, the SmartCan hardware solution connects the machine to the internet or a smartphone. An integrated memory card guarantees an additional data back-up if there is no mobile network coverage.
Horsch says HorschConnect technology enables smartphones to control machines.

Precision drill controller means more accurate row crop seeding
S
ugar beet and maize can be established more accurately and with less wasted seed thanks to a universal row crop planting controller. The new Topcon Apollo CM20 row crop planting controller is supplied by LH Agro. Fully ISOBUS compliant, its plug-and-play design means it can be retrofitted to most existing precision drills – and used with any ISOBUS compatible implement control console. The controller can monitor the accuracy of row crop seeding operations in real-time and relay this information back to the drill’s operator so that any anomalies can be dealt with immediately, says LH Agro managing director Richard Reed.
establishment and yield producing ability of row crops such as sugar beet and maize. The Apollo CM-20 row crop planting controller monitors and control individual seed placement – and control the variable rate application of up to three additional granular products such as a starter fertiliser or micro and
macro-nutrients. In addition, it can control the function of up to 24 electrically driven seeding units and make onthe-fly adjustments to avoid seed wastage as a result of overlaps or misses at headlands or in the corners of awkwardly shaped fields. “In addition to auto-section and variable rate control, the new The plug and play Apollo CM-20 can be retrofitted to most precision drills.
Granular products “Accurate planting is the essential first stage of any cropping cycle, with the precise application of large seeds vital to the successful
controller’s biggest single advantage is its ability to monitor singulation and spacing accuracy and to ensure that each seed is dropped in exactly the correct position,” says Mr Reed.
Compensation feature “This even includes at bends in the field where the CM-20’s turn compensation feature reduces the seeding rate towards the inside of the curve and increases it at the outer radius where the drill’s seeding coulters will effectively be travelling further and faster. “This ensures all seeds are planted at equal distances irrespective of irregularities in field shape and helps crops to achieve their full potential by maximising crop uniformity for optimum light inception and to minimise competition between neighbouring plants.” The new controller is also compatible with the Topcon Agriculture Platform (TAP) which allows seeding data and prescription mapping information to be relayed from the implement to the farm office and vice versa.

SPRAYERS
Don’t forget spray tank management basics • Fill the tank to the required volume • Remember to follow product label • Always properly clean out sprayer
G
rowers are being reminded to take care when it comes to tank mixing and sprayer hygiene ahead of making applications this spring.
Tank mixing pesticides helps save time and reduce compaction by cutting down the number of passes over a crop. But rushing can potentially do more harm
Patience is a virtue when tank mixing sprays effectively, says Adam Espir
than good, says Adam Espir, commercial technical manager for agrochemical manufacturer FMC. “When looking to tank mix, it’s essential that you don’t forget the basics. As with any pesticide, be sure to follow the product label, paying close attention to the compatibility guidance and mixing order,” he says. To prevent blockages and other problems in the sprayer, Mr Espir stresses the importance of not rushing to put all products into the induction hopper at once. “Don’t forget to fill the sprayer with half the required water volume and start agitation. “You’ll then need to ensure each pesticide added is fully dispersed before introducing another product. Be patient, you don’t want concentrates to come into contact with each other. “Once you’re confident each product has been fully dispersed, fill the tank to the required volume and maintain constant agitation. This process is important if using granular products and EC liquids, which can be prone to blocking filters if not fully dispersed.”
Top tips for sprayer hygiene Always wash out the sprayer thoroughly, especially between different crop types, such as moving from cereals to broadleaf crops Dry residues are harder to remove from a sprayer, so wash out on the same day as spraying If you have an in-tank rising system, make use of it, but remember it is not a substitute for a thorough clean out Use a specific spray tank cleaner, such as All Clear Extra, for a thorough clean Always use high quality pesticides, specifically formulated for easy mixing and washout Mr Espir reminds farmers that using higher water volumes can also help prevent issues, especially for complex mixes. He recommends using a minimum of 200 litres/ha of water if possible. On top of correct tank mixing protocols, appropriately cleaning out a sprayer after use will help to maintain efficacy and avoid cross contamination. Top tips for good sprayer hygiene are otulined in the panel above.
Long-lasting tyres reduce soil damage
F
arm contractor Grigg-Agri has invested in another set of VF 420/85 R34 Michelin YieldBib tyres for its two Bateman RB35 sprayers after the original equipment rubber lasted twice as long as the tyres it had run in the past. The two sprayers are used to support a wide range of arable crops across Cornwall, clocking up significant mileage on country roads as they travel between farms, says Grigg-Agri owner Mark Grigg. “We had used a different product in the past, but Bateman fitted the Michelins to these two sprayers as original equipment and they lasted for four seasons, whereas the old tyres would only ever last for two seasons. “Both sprayers are loaded 12 Anglia Machinery March 2022
with 4,000 litre tanks and are very heavy vehicles doing a lot of road work. But the YieldBibs stood up to the challenge, clocking up 4,500 hours before we had to switch to the new set.” Michelin YieldBib tyres benefit from patented Ultraflex Technology, meaning they can carry the same load as a standard technology tyre, but with up to 40 per cent reduced inflation pressure and without compromising on robustness. They also boast Very High Flexion (VF) casings, giving a 24% larger surface footprint which helps to spread the machine’s weight over a larger surface area for less ground compaction. Other key features include stubble-deflecting lugs and an
anti-stubble belt in the tread area, designed to strengthen the main zone at risk of damage caused by stubble, bolstering the tyres’ durability.
The sprayer is used across a range of arable crops.

Drone start-up secures further investment
A
gricultural drone technology specialist Drone Ag has secured almost £800,000 to further develop its crop scouting technology. Skippy Scout is a crop monitoring app that uses drones to automatically capture images which are analysed by ground-breaking artificial intelligence (AI) to offer arable farmers vital broad acre crop insight. The images provide an accurate green area index (GAI), count emerging plants, and identify weeds. Crops can then be sprayed accordingly – and more efficiently than with conventional systems. The funding comprises £650,000 of equity funding from 934 investors and a further £145,000 grant from Innovate UK. It is the largest amount of funding secured by Drone Ag to date, says company founder Jack Wrangham. “Both grant providers and private investors [are] choosing to support the development of our technology. This funding will enable our team to grow and develop new functionality and an Android compatible version of our
crop scouting app Skippy Scout.” “We are soon to launch our Scout Sphere functionality which will offer users a unique full field overview that includes the ability to focus on any area of the field and choose where to inspect at leaf-level,”
Base station The capital injection to the business will also be used to complete a base station concept which will see the launch of new remote drone scouting. “Skippy Nest can operated from anywhere in the world, says Mr Wrangham. The Innovate UK grant was obtained with support from NorthInvest, a not-for-profit organisation fuelling innovation across the Northern Powerhouse region. This will enable Mr Wrangham to expand his development team and work on more features. “We plan to advance our drone based spraying technology and start looking at using drones for spreading too. The investment achieved through CrowdCube and the grant support will see Drone Ag become a leader in precision agriculture.”
The company will use the investment to develop its technology.
