Theft warning as diesel prices soar

F

armers with diesel storage tanks are being warned to check their security amid increased fears that they could be targeted by thieves. “Storage tanks contain thousands of pounds of oil and diesel, so they have an obvious appeal to thieves,” says William Nicholl, client director at rural insurance broker Lycetts. “This is no hi-tech, difficult to organise crime – a 1,000 litre tank can be drained within minutes. There have been a number of nationwide incidents of organised gangs siphoning-off fuel.” Fertiliser theft is also becoming an increasing problem, and yet another consideration that farmers will need to take into account, says Mr Nicholl Farms are a particular target because yards and tanks are often isolated. Buying in bulk to

obtain lower prices often means tanks contain more fuel than other rural businesses. But a number of measures can be taken to reduce the likelihood of theft. This includes siting tanks away from prying eyes – including out of view from roads, footpaths and bridleways.

Prying eyes Many tanks look unattractive and for that reason owners often position them away from the farmhouse, says Mr Nicholl. “The problem with this is that they locate them in areas of the property that make it easier for thieves to act unobserved. “Lighting and CCTV cameras can be effective security measures, but it is important to maintain them and test them regularly as they may have become inoperative.

Fuel tanks should be located out of sight where possible.

“The actual material tanks are made of should be considered before purchase. Steel tanks are much more difficult for thieves to drill through – or carry away. Owners could also consider installing secure cages around the tanks.” Daily checks of oil tank gauges

should be made, says Mr Nicholl. “Technology is also available that sends text messages to multiple mobile phones if there is an unexpected drop in oil levels. Additionally, there are alarms that continually monitor levels using ultrasonics and sound-off when they suddenly drop.”

Second-hand market holds firm

A

uctioneer Cheffins sold more than £12.4m of machinery during the first quarter of the year – at the firm’s Cambridge monthly sales and via on-farm auctions. Three monthly auctions in January, February and March grossed more than £9,29m – an increase of about 20% on the previous quarter. Overseas purchases made up about 35% of sales, with buyers from Ireland, Romania, Sudan, Lithuania and Poland. Some 11 on-site sales took place across the UK during the first quarter – including modern and vintage machinery. The highest grossing on-site sale during the quarter was for Stepside Agricultural Contractors in Cardigan, West Wales. Top selling items included £70,750 for a Case 240 CVX Puma tractor at the Raby Contract Services sale in Lancashire; £63,700 for a Fendt Vario

Oliver Godfrey, head of the Cheffins machinery department, said supply chain challenges globally were consistently driving demand for quality secondhand agricultural machinery in the UK and abroad. “While we are entering into

uncertain times with the combination of the war in Ukraine and the global recovery from the pandemic, in general, results from the first quarter of this year appear to be trending upwards.

Increased investment “As the breadbasket of the world is now going to be disrupted throughout Eastern Europe, there is a possibility that agri-

Visitors who like to keep their fingers on the technology pulse will enjoy the Farming 4.0 Trail. Follow the Trail to see exhibitors with cutting edge ideas from big data and smart tech solutions to precision technology leading the way towards net zero.

cultural produce prices will increase, which could bring with it increased investment from farmers into machinery. “The next quarter is likely to be much more telling as to how global events could have impacted the market. On site sales have also increased in regularity and we now have a busy calendar of sales for 2022.” More farmers see on-site sales as a hassle-free solution for selling off kit. This can be on retirement or when they a new direction for their business. The monthly machinery sale has also seen a new layout making it easier to view lots. “The new layout as improved the way the sale ground is used and has been well received by both buyers and sellers. By moving the plant sale closer to the sales marquee, it is now easier for buyers to watch both the tractors and plant lots being sold at the same time.” “As always LAMMA is a great opportunity for professional development and keeping up to date with the latest technology, ideas and legislation,” says Nichola Bell, Head of Events for Agriconnect which organises LAMMA. BASIS can be fount wil Hall 10 on stand132, with NRoSO in Hall 10 on stand 102. Up to six BASiS or seven NRoSO points can be collected. For a list of exhibitors, visit www.lammashow.com.

Big mower ‘saves time and fuel’

K

uhn says its newest – and largest – mower is capable of saving farmers and contractors time and money. The new FC 13460 RA mowerconditioner has the widest working width of any Kuhn machine – up to 13.4 metres. In a single pass, the belt grouper forms a swath up to 3m wide, with forage collected over the full 13m cutting width. “This mower is light, considering its working width, which helps to reduce the draught power requirement,” says Kuhn specialist Rhodri Jenkins. “This, and the extended working width, will help to lower fuel costs and increase productivity and overall efficiency.” The mower’s frame has been designed to exert constant even pressure with suspension which can be adjusted us-

ing the tractor’s Isobus. This improves ground protection because the mower adjusts to the ground contours to provide an even cut. Flotation tyres help to further reduce the impact of the mower on the soil to reduce compaction and prevent soil structure damage. The FC 13460 RA also has a telescopic axle as standard. “This increases clearance which then makes it easier to form a wider and more evenly shaped swath to improve drying and pick up,” says Mr Jenkins. The Optidic Elite cutter bar will save operators time as it requires no maintenance and has a Fast-Fit quick knife release system. The bar also improves the overlap between the discs and is positioned to enable a better flow of forage. The mower can be operated using Kuhn’s CCI 800 or can be

specified with CCI 1200 as an option. Alternatively, an Isobus compatible on-board terminal can be used. “Most operations can be controlled using the CC1 A3 Joystick. “It offers easier and more ergo-

nomic control. The standout operational benefit to this mower is the reduction in servicing requirements thanks to the Triple 5-inch knives that will last longer than most and will require less maintenance.”

SAFETY

‘Don’t compromise safety in rush for silage’ • Needless rush could risk accidents • Call to maintain harvest machinery • Concern that standards do not slip

E

fforts to bring in silage crops this spring could put farm safety at risk, warns NFU Mutual. Soaring fertiliser and animal feed prices mean farm-grown silage will be more important than ever to feed livestock next winter, says the rural insurer. It is urging

farmers to make sure they carry out regular safety checks. With first-cut silage cutting about to start, and farmers striving to produce top quality silage, the NFU Mutual is urging farmers to make sure safety standards don’t slip. “Top-quality silage crops will

be more valuable than ever this year as input costs go through the roof ,” says Andy Manson, managing director of NFU Mutual Risk Management Services. “But it’s vital that safe working is foremost in everyone’s minds.

Fit for the job “Accidents tend to happen when people work too long, push machinery too hard or take risks to get crops in before the weather turns. Making sure machinery is fit for the job makes harvest-

ing go smoothly and cuts accident risk. It’s particularly important to check tyres, brakes and couplings of silage trailers, which may not have been used for months before suddenly getting pressed into action.” The Tilly your Trailer initiative can help ensure trailers are fit for heavy use and comply with safety legislation Details of the Tilly scheme, which also encourages daily safety checks, can be found at www. tillypass.co.uk.

Before silage harvesting

Working in the fields

• Put in place a system for keeping in contact with lone workers

• Regularly check moving parts of mowers, tedders, forage harvesters and balers, including guards and PTO shafts for wear or damage

• Make sure drivers are aware of the locations and heights of overhead power lines and check that your machinery will safely pass under wires and restrictions • Make sure new staff are properly inducted and trained for the work you give them – in particular the dangers of working around farm machinery • Put in place measures to ensure children are kept away from working areas • Ensure trailers are road legal with fully maintained and working brakes, lights, indicators and flashing beacons

• Carry out all recommended maintenance on schedule • Take special care to check for following vehicles before turning right into fields or yards as this is a common cause of accidents • Switch off engines and ensure parts have stopped before clearing blockages or carrying out maintenance - remove keys as well to prevent accidental starting • Keep a mobile on you at all times - not left in a tractor or pickup cab • Take regular breaks to eat, drink and rest to stave off tiredness

Working on silage clamps • Never overfill a silage clamp as this increases the risk of vehicles overturning when rolling or filling • For indoor clamps, keep away for the first 72 hours as this is when dangerous nitrogen dioxide gas can form in large quantities • If possible, use a hook or a pole to keep away from the edge of the face when unsheeting or removing tyres

7% fall in new tractor sales

Precision drill wins Farm Machine 2022 award

T

he Väderstad Proceed precision drill has won the Farm Machine 2022 award in the seeders and planters category – previously known as Machine of the Year. The Proceed is is undergoing field trials in several countries across Europe. They show impressive results with stronger crops – and an increase in plant and root biomass compared to a modern seed drill – while cutting the seed rate in half for cereals. An international award with a judging panel comprising machinery experts, the Farm Machine 2022 award is presented by a jury of agricultur-

al journalists from more than a dozen countries all over Europe. “We are very proud to win this award, Proceed is a technological leap for precision farming that can place a full range of seeds at the perfect depth with millimeter precision,” says Lars Thylén, Väderstad’s director of product management. “It is outstanding in depth-precision, in-row precision, end-of-row precision, as well as seedbed optimisation. The result is a quick, even emergence and vital crop population where each plant is provided conditions needed to reach full potential.”

Tractor sales fell 7% during the first quarter of 2021 – with 3,047 new machines registered in the UK, says the Agricultural Engineers Association. Sales of tractors bigger than 50hp fell by more than 25% in East Anglia compared to the first quarter of 2021. Most other English regions recorded smaller declines – although Wales saw a 10% increase. The sharpest decline was in the 241-320hp range, where registrations were down by more than one third, compared to the same period last year. The AEA said this might be due to supply chain delays rather than a shift in underlying demand. In terms of the power of machines registered, there was solid growth in the 51-80hp range, with registrations up by nearly half compared to a year earlier. But this range still accounts for just 6% of total registrations with numbers down for most other power bands.

LAMMA 2022

What not to miss at LAMMA 2022 New kit from manufacturers large and small will be on display at this month’s LAMMA event.

T

he line-up at LAMMA this year promises many ‘unmissable’ features and new products for farmers and contractors across all sectors, say organisers. More than 600 agricultural businesses are exhibiting at the Birmingham NEC on 4-5 May. They include numerous new products will be on show in the UK for the first time. New tractors will include Kubota’s M6-001 and M6002 series; Basak’s new 5000 Red Power series; and Massey Ferguson’s MF7S.210 Exclusive spec DynaVT transmission and MF6S.155 Exclusive spec Dyna-6 transmission on the Chandlers’ stand. Exhibits of particular interest to the arable sector include the UK debut of FarmDroid, a fully autonomous, solar-powered robot offering precision drilling and weeding which has joined the Opico line up. Originally developed by two Danish farmers the FarmDroid has had a successful introduction in northern Europe where organic growers have reported increased beet yields of 40 to 60% over tractor-hoed crops.

feature and a range of LED headlights from UTV Products. Those of particular interest to the livestock sector include two new additions to McHale’s Variable Chamber baler range. The McHale V8940 non-chopper baler and the McHale V8950 15-knife chopper baler are high output machines designed to produce dense bales from 0.6m to 1.9m in diameter. The team from Calibre Control is keen to demonstrate a new forage analyser to visitors looking to maximise their forage quality. The SCiO is a hand-held NIR device which can analyse forage on farm, in just 10 seconds.

GT Bunning will be revealing updates to in-cab screen options for its muckspreaders. These, along with a mobile app, allow close monitoring of the weight of spreader contents from the loader. Vredo will be showcasing two new slurry injectors. Updates to the Keenan MechFiber paddle feeder will help farmers achieve greater nutritional performance from their livestock. All existing models will be included in the new MechFiber+ range by the summer.

Agri-tech future Visitors to the show will get a glimpse of the future of agri-tech

with the Farming 4.0 Trail. Visitors will see the new and emerging technology that will redefine farming including the very latest in data, robotics, autonomous machines and devices. The new Fendt & Valtra Speaker Zone brings expert advice on how to avoid becoming a target of rural and cyber crime. Speakers will discuss efforts being made to protect rural communities and share the support available to businesses. “With a huge line up of unmissable features and presentations, not to mention the vast array of new products being seen for the first time, there is something for everyone at LAMMA,” says Nichola Bell, Head of Events for AgriConnect. LAMMA 2022

New hedge trimmer ranges launch at LAMMA

S

helbourne Reynolds is replacing its 700 and 800 series flagship hedge trimmer ranges with the new 7000 and 8000 series models. The new ranges will make their national debut at this month’s LAMMA event. The 8000 series launches with two new control systems – and the design of the smaller machines now matching the larger ones in many areas.

High-hour operators There are five models in the new 8000 series, heavy-duty machines suiting high-hour operators, including contractors. Depending on the model, the retracted reach ranges from 4.8m to 6.2m with a maximum reach of 6m to 8m. There are also two VFRT models with variable forward reach as well as telescopic capability. These have a retracted reach of 5.6m/6.2m, maximum reach of 6.5m/7.5m, forward reach of up to 2.0m/2.5m and rearward reach of 1.3m/1.6m. An innovative new operating system, aimed at providing a greater degree of control, ease of use and service monitoring, is being launched alongside the new Shelbourne Reynolds 8000 hedge trimmers.

Two versions available While the operating screen is common to both types, the key difference between the two STouch versions is in the joystick. The S-Touch Compact – standard on all 8000 models – features a compact joystick operated via the fingertips. The optional S-Touch Max incorporates a larger multifunction joystick for operators who prefer full hand-held control and greater functionality, with reduced need to operate functions via the touchscreen terminal. Both joysticks provide four proportional services, giving the operator greater control of the main functions. The S-Touch Compact joystick allows control of the primary lift and reach functions of the trimmer boom. The S-Touch Max joystick features a larger physical design which fits the operator’s hand and allows control of a larger number of functions. The top roller switch controls the head angle, the front roller controls the slew or variable forward reach where fitted. The top two buttons control the telescopic boom. Three additional hot-key buttons give the option of programming three further controls that would normally

be operated via the touchscreen, giving the operator maximum joystick control.

Touchscreen terminal The new S-Touch operating terminal features software developed in-house by the Shelbourne Reynolds team of IT engineers. It allows the operator to set up the trimmer and its joystick controller as desired, as well as operating key functions. A single press of the screen allows switching between hedge or verge operating modes, whilst a settings page allows easy adjustment of parameters such as joystick sensitivity and hydraulic flow rates. Adjustments can be checked live without having to leave the settings page. Features Standard specification for the 8000 series includes a 70hp hydraulic pump and a 1.2m belt drive General Purpose flail head, which replaces the firm’s former HD design. Standard head is the 1.2m GP1200, while there is a 1.5m GP1500 option. For high-capacity single-pass cutting, buyers can alternatively specify 1.2m HC1200 or 1.6m

S-Touch Compact is standard on all 8000 models, featuring a compact joystick operated via the fingertips

HC1600 heads, with 150mm-diameter rotor and 50mm rotor bearing. All heads feature twin V-belt drive, bolted adjustable head roller and float ability. Further arm specification comprises twin accumulator arm float, auto-reset break-back, 102-degree slew and parallel arm geometry. Additional features include LED road lights and 180-degree strobe. In terms of machine design changes, the most significant are to the new 7000 series, which comprises two models – the 7060T with 6.0m telescopic reach and the 7062VFR with 6.2m outward reach plus variable forward reach. They take many of their design features from the larger 8000/former 800 series models, and are styled similarly, particularly in the oil tank and top cooler cover, improving access to areas such as the oil cooler and oil filters. Upgraded lighting from the 8000 models is integral to the design. The controller for the new 7000 series is the established Shelbourne Reynolds digital proportional joystick plus LCD screen. Main functions are fully programmable, and include proportional control of lift, reach and head angling Tractor mounting is via a fourpoint stabiliser kit or five-point axle-mounting arrangement, the latter a new development that uses the tractor link arms, superseding the old arrangement which meant these had to be secured or removed.
