Farm security warning as winter nights draw in
T
hieves are using the darker nights to steal farm machinery, fuel and fertiliser, says NFU Mutual. Farmers and other rural dwellers are being urged to be vigilant to avoid becoming victims of rural theft now the clocks have gone back. The rural insurer says it expects thefts to increase during the winter. The warning comes as organised criminal gangs continue to target farms in overnight raids for expensive GPS systems and quad bikes. In some cases thieves, who already know the layout of farms, are targeting victims of theft a second time. Shortages and sharp rises in the cost of diesel, heating oil and fertiliser are also raising the risk
of vital supplies becoming top targets for farm thieves, says Robin Till, of NFU Mutual Risk Management Services. “Now is a good time of year to step up security and assess how you have set out your stall. Are your entrance and exit points secure, and are there expensive items on display? Could you target-harden valuable items with multiple layers of security?
Security systems “Thieves like the cover of darkness, but hate anything that announces their arrival so intruder alarms, security lighting and systems which send alerts and CCTV footage to mobile phones are good deterrents.” The cost of rural theft in the
UK fell by 20% to £43.3m in 2020 as lockdown measures helped keep thieves out of the countryside, according to NFU figures. But it says theft often peaks in the run-up to Christmas after the clocks change. Mr Till says: “Thieves target anything they can sell on for a profit, which is why we are urging farmers to secure stocks of fertiliser and their diesel and heating oil tanks as prices soar. He adds: “These thefts cause disruption and huge anxiety in the farming community and we want to work together to make it harder for criminals to steal from our farms and villages.” Right: Farm machinery is often stolen to order

Mazzotti sprayer models will continue to be separately branded s
Mazzotti subsidiary receives full endorsement from John Deere
J
ohn Deere subsidiary Mazzotti, which builds self-propelled sprayers, is now officially endorsed by its parent company following its acquisition in 2017. The decision follows the integration of Mazzotti technology, processes, components and parts within the John Deere sprayer business – although sprayer models will continue to be separately branded. The logo will now include ‘by John Deere’ underneath the Mazzotti name. The new Mazzotti logo was publicly seen for the first time at last month’s 2021 EIMA show in Bologna, Italy.
Mazzotti customers will now receive the same levels of product quality, parts availability and service support throughout the life cycle of the sprayers as they would expect to receive from any other John Deere dealer supplied machine. This endorsement is supported by the continual development of the Mazzotti product range, which already features John Deere engines, cabs, the M-Spray dual-circuit solution system and precision systems. Parts will now be available through the European Parts Distribution Centre (EPDC) in Germany and all machines sup-
ported by the John Deere Dealer Technical Assistance Centre (DTAC) system. Mazzotti’s MAF self-propelled sprayers are sold through selected dealers in the UK & Ireland complement the John Deere model range. It now offers the widest choice of machines in the EU and CIS markets.
New styling Mazzotti produces compact, light sprayers with a front cab configuration, and features including variable ground clearance, independent suspension and the Air Assist spray system. For 2022, the smaller Mazzot-
ti machines receive new updated styling, with stronger one-piece side shields and lower profile shielding to allow better ‘over the shoulder’ visibility to the rear and boom from the cab. These machines will also feature improved access to the solution tank and engine, and a new rear axle flow divider option for hydrostatic models that provides increased traction in extreme conditions or for side-hill operation. Larger MAF 4240, 5240 and 6240 (4000, 5000 and 6000-litre capacity) sprayers will be fitted with the John Deere combine cab for delivery from May 2022.

rimme showcased its latest Asa-Lift cabbage harvester at Syngenta’s Fields of Innovation event. Visitors to the Lincolnshire event last month were the first in the UK to see the MC-1010C machine. It has an improved, steeper in-take and can feature either an elevator or fill boxes directly. Grimme is offering the MC1010C in three different options: tractor mounted, trailed and selfpropelled. There is also the option of a single or two row version. A tractor mounted, single row mod-
el, was on show near Surfleet. “The new Asa-Lift Cabbage Harvester is a significant development within our range of vegetable harvesters,” says Grimme vegetable specialist Rob Wilkinson. “With several mounting options and a redesigned in-take, the MC-1010 C is the most gentle harvester we have ever made, and the refinements also mean it is one of the quickest too.” Asa-Lift was founded in 1936. Grimme acquired a 70% stake in 2013 before going on to acquire a 100% stake in 2020.

New ration management systems for diet feeders
A
new weighing and monitoring system increases the ration programming and feed management capabilities of Kuhn’s diet feeders. It follows a partnership between machinery maker Kuhn and specialist Italian manufacturer Dinamica Generale. The deal means a number of features are now offered as standard on all Kuhn machines. They include intuitive programmable weighing. In addition, the company offers the option of either a secondary display or a remote-control facility, available through pre-loaded apps on a smartphone or tablet. For full ration tracking and management, Kuhn now offers cloud-based data transfer. This provides a comprehensive package of monitoring and reporting options compatible with other

Claas unveils wider Disco mower
A
4.2m wide rear-mounted mower – the Disco 4400 Contour – has been added to the Claas Disco range. Rear-mounted mowers with large working widths used in front-rear combinations can be an effective alternative to triple combinations – depending on the application, explains Claas, which says it is responding to customer demand. The mower features central pivoting, an innovative diagonal 120° folding for safe, vertical road transport at a height of less than 4m and a space-saving storage position combined with powerful performance. With its 4.2m working width, the 4400 Contour becomes the flagship model in the Disco range. Like its siblings, it features the Max Cut mower bed for which there is a double-swath laying option. This is achieved by placing two swath drums on the fourth and fifth disc – from the inside – to create one narrower and one wider single swath. It is especially useful on wet or soft ground as it avoids driving on the forage.
Centre of gravity The mower bed is pivot-mounted at its centre of gravity. An adjustable spiral spring ensures the bed comes down evenly during lowering while two vibration dampers stabilise it as it is raised.
The 4400 Contour is the flagship Disco model, with a 4.2m width cut.
Two pivot points on the arm at right angles to the direction of travel ensure optimum groundcontour following on uneven ground and when mowing banks. Active float suspension allows the ground pressure of the mower bed to be adjusted from the cab by spool valve while on the move. A gauge on the headstock shows the currently set pressure. In parked position a mechanical latch disables the suspension system so that pressure is maintained in the circuit. Alternatively, the pressure can be reduced so that the mechanical lock is not required. The Disco 4400 Contour is equipped with hydraulic non-
stop collision protection as standard. In the event of a collision, the mower bar swings back and over the obstacle thanks to a rotating pin inclined at 15°.
Compact transportation Oil from the collision protection system is forced into the suspension ram to further depressurise the mower bed. This provides effective protection from serious damage. Once past the obstacle, the mower bed automatically swings back to its working position due to the oil pressure. The vector folding system allows the mower to be folded vertically to 120° for transport. The mower can then be folded back-
wards slightly using the hydraulic break back ram, which reduces the transport height. This means the mower unit achieves a transport height of less than 4m for road travel – despite a working width of 4.2m. At the same time, it is positioned diagonally behind the tractor and supported by the headstock, shifting the centre of gravity to the tractor’s longitudinal axle. Compared with mowers that pivot to the rear, this solution halves the load on the tractor front axle, which makes steering more stable. Minimal swinging means other road users are not endangered when turning.
Agrifac offers Weed-It on Condor sprayer range

prayer specialist Agrifac continues to invest heavily in agri-technology – targeting accurate pesticide applications at plant level. To further strengthen its position in precision agriculture, the company is expanding its offering with the addition of Weed-It spot spraying technology on the Condor and Condor Endurance field sprayers. “Weed-It commonly used worldwide to control weeds efficiently,” says Agrifac product manager Rens Albers. “The option to combine WeedIt with our Agrifac field sprayers 8 Anglia Machinery November 2021
makes the crop protection even more efficient.” Weed-It controls weeds by targeting living green organic material using fluorescence technology. This works by measuring the degree of reflection of plants in certain light wavelengths.
Day and night This technique makes it possible to work both day and night with a guaranteed hit ratio. This highly effective method of spot spraying – often outside the growing season – has been proven since 1999 in countries such as Australia, the USA and Canada.

Rare farming gems to go on show at two flagship events
M
achinery dealer Russell’s is celebrating 100 years of serving farmers by exhibiting two real showstoppers at this year’s Midlands Machinery Show. The first is a carefully restored 1970s Russell 3D tractor – shown alongside a special edition New Holland T6.180 – complete with bespoke centenary paintwork. The two eye-catching pieces of machinery will be on display at both the Midlands Machinery Show (9-10 November), and the Newark Vintage Tractor and Heritage Show (13-14 Nov), both at Newark Showground. Tracing its origins back to 1840, the Russell family business started out in the blacksmith trade. The business went into machinery manufacturing but today concentrates on sales of agricultural equipment. It is celebrating its centenary as a limited company. “We’re really proud of our heritage and we wanted to commemorate 100 years of our people, customers and trading in a special way,” says Russell’s managing director Paul Russell. Today, Russell’s is one of the largest agricultural and grounds care dealerships in the UK with 11 depots, 175 employees and a £70 million turnover. “Since the very beginning we’ve been taking care of our customers’ horsepower,” says Mr Russell.

The brainchild behind the Russell 3D tractor restoration is Joe Marshall, an agricultural engineer at the company. “We were looking for ways to commemorate the centenary and Joe had seen the tractor for sale online,” explains Mr Russell. A labour of love for Mr Marshall, the restoration began in November 2020 and took seven months to complete with the tractor being completely stripped down, sandblasted, rebuilt and finished off with original paintwork.

Rain harvesting tips on hand at show
R
ainwater harvesting will be among the topics discussed during a seminar session at the Midlands Machinery Show. About 86% of holdings rely on a mains water supply and its cost continues to rise. But rainwater is free – and visitors to the machinery event will be learn how to harvest what is an increasingly valuable asset. JRH Water Management director Michael Jorden said: “The majority of water bills are paid by direct debit and farms which are now metered find their costs have gone up because they pay for what they use – previously they were on a flat rate.” Farmers should consider the benefits of harvesting rainwater, said Mr Jorden. many advantages – besides the fact that the water costs nothing. Harvesting it could help improve soil structure and reduce pollution. “Harvesting it offers a way to control flood risk by reducing run off – both areas of government concern – and it is chemical-free so helps improve crop performance and reduce the rate of deterioration in machinery and drinkers.”
Catchment grant “The Countryside Stewardship Water Catchment grant is still available but there are two new opportunities launching this month: The Farming Investment Fund and the Sustainability and Technology Fund.
Grants were available to help farmers store water, said Mr Jorden. Farmers who chose not to go for the grant option could still obtain 100% tax relief available through the Enhanced Capital Allowance, he added. Research results from Lincoln University suggest that chlorine in mains water reacts with glyphosate, reducing its efficacy. Less glyphosate is therefore required when mixed with rainwater rather than mains water. “There is also an efficiency saving as calcium in mains water leads to a buildup of limescale in sprayers and troughs,” said Mr Jorden. “Using rainwater means cleaner equipment, resulting in reduced maintenance and labour costs.”

Exclusive John Deere factory tour at machinery show
A
n exclusive insight into John Deere’s tractor production line will be available at the Midlands Machinery Show – thanks to a live streamed tour of the company’s Mannheim factory in Germany. “Building a modern tractor is extremely complex,” says John Deere marketing manager Chris Wiltshire. “We have just-in-time production – the cabs and engines are made elsewhere so are scheduled to arrive on the day of build.” About one third of the production line is automated. Robots build the transmissions and people do the rest – including assembling the chassis and adding the engine, transmission and cab. “Visitors will be able to see how we build and test our tractors, with commentary and close-up views which you wouldn’t even get at an in-person visit,” says Mr Wiltshire. “We will demonstrate everything.” Insights will include the making of bare components, final assembly, testing, and rolling off the production line. The final results will be on show with John Deere dealers Ben Burgess, Ripon Farm Services and Doubleday all be exhibiting at the event. Following the cancelling of last year’s show due to the coronavirus
pandemic, organiser Elizabeth Halsall says she is looking forward to holding a physical event. “There is sure to be a great vibe, with live demonstrations of cuttingedge tractors and equipment, as well as drones, robots and electric vehicles. Farming faces a time of signifi-

Seminar explores big changes for contractors
C
hanges to red diesel regulations, new machinery grants and how to work successfully with your contractor are just some of the topics being covered in a seminar at the Midlands Machinery Show. Although agriculture will retain access to red diesel, legislation coming into effect next April will see many sectors lose their red diesel fuel tax entitlement, says Jill Hewitt (pictured right), chief executive of the National Association of Agricultural Contractors. “We have been involved in the consultation process – but nothing is finalised yet. We are waiting on the detail which we hope

to share at the show.” An exciting prospect for contractors is potential new machinery grant funding. “This is massive for contractors because up until Brexit they have been excluded from applying for grants, particularly for machinery,” she explains. “This will really level the playing field for contractors. We don’t know what exactly will be included in the grant, but it’s likely to be elements which are good for soil, like minimum tillage equipment. “The development means contractors will be able to get funding to be more innovative – they will be able to get ahead and invest in the latest technology. It’s
a real recognition that contractors are a vital part of UK agriculture.” This is particularly relevant as over 90% of farmers use con-
tractors. “With the decline of subsidies, I think more farmers are going to be looking to contractors rather than investing in machinery themselves,” says Ms Hewitt. Having a good relationship with between farmer and contractor is undoubtably importantm she adds. “It’s a partnership – it’s all about communication. Sharing information is really key for safety too.” With such fundamental changes ahead in the contracting and agricultural industry, the NAAC hopes the seminar will provide visitors an opportunity to get an answer to any questions they may have about these important topics.

First Scammell Showman’s tractor for sale
T
he first ever Showman’s Tractor, created by Scammell in 1938, will be auctioned off this month during the disposal sale of the Roger Austin Collection The collection is one of the country’s most significant collections of fairground vehicles and memorabilia. The timed online sale via Cheffins auction house takes place from 25-30 November. The collection is being sold on behalf of the family of Roger Austin who was one of the leading collectors of Scammell vehicles and fairground memorabilia worldwide. Mr Austin ran a car salvage business based in Raunds, Northamptonshire. He was also a devoted supporter of the Fairground Heritage Trust and started his large-scale collection in the 1980s, encompassing hundreds of pieces of fairground memorabilia at its peak, alongside the 27 vehicles and trailers on offer at this sale. Leading the sale is the Parnaby’s ballast tractor, Before its current guise, it was the first Showman’s Tractor ever built and precedes the famous
Showtrac vehicles owned by Hoadleys, as confirmed by the Scammell Owners & Enthusiasts Club. The lorry was a ground-breaking vehicle at the time, representing the important development from steam engines previously used for the haulage and motive power for fairground rides. Cheffins director Jeremy Curzon said: “Roger Austin was a much-respected character on the fairground heritage scene and his collection was widely-regarded as one of the most important in the country. The Scammell Showtrac is an important historical development in the history of the British funfair and marks the turning point in the 1930s where fairgrounds moved from being driven almost solely by steam to using diesel vehicles. Mr Curzon said there were only 18 Showtracs ever built. “During the 1930s, fairgrounds were a serious money-maker with many operating nationwide, and the fact that Scammell took the steps to build a vehicle simply for showmen was a testament to this.”
