Think twice call on farm safety

R

ural risk specialists are urging farmers and contractors to “stop and think twice” amid a surge in fatal workplace accidents. Some 41 people were killed as a result of farming and other agriculture-related activities in 2020/21 – almost double the fatalities in the previous year, according to figures from the Health and Safety Executive. While the number of fatalities fluctuates annually, the five most common causes of death injuries remains the same year after year. Causes of workplace accidents in agriculture include being struck by a moving vehicle or livestock, being hit by an object or falling from height.

“Fatal injury rates in agriculture remain notoriously high, earning it the unenviable reputation as the riskiest industry,” said Alex Cormack, of Lycetts Risk Management Services. As an industry, farming accounts for just 1% of the UK workforce, but 25% of workplace fatalities.

Farming accounts for one in four fatal workplace accidents

Hazards “We know that farmers face a myriad of potential hazards, from contact with machinery and vehicles, chemicals, and livestock, to working at a height, and the demanding, solitary and relentless work associated with agriculture heightens farmers’ exposure to risk.” The causes of fatal injuries

were the same year after year, said Mr Cormack. Some deaths were unforeseeable accidents, he added. But a change in attitude to risk was vital to driving down the farming fatality rate. This included following machinery operation safety procedures, handling chemicals in the proper manner, safely checking the robustness of platforms and

roofs, and the careful handling and securing of livestock. “A split-second decision can mean the difference between life and death, so it is of critical importance that farmers stop, think twice and treat every task with risk management and health and safety at the forefront of their minds.” Farmer lucky to be alive after forklift impalement, see page 4.

Cambridgeshire farmer lucky to be alive after forklift impalement • Farm accident almost proved fatal • Seven-hour operation successful • £45,000 raised for air ambulance

A

42-year-old farmer from Cambridgeshire has paid tribute to the emergency services who saved his life after he was accidentally impaled on a forklift tine. Jonathan Willis dodged death by millimetres on 26 October last year while working on his farm near Wisbech. He had been unloading a trailer of straw bales when he got out of his forklift to untie the trailer straps. As he was standing between the forklift and the trailer, the forklift rolled forward – impaling Mr Willis on one of the bale tines. Fortunately, he was able to quickly raise the alarm by calling his wife Wendy who dialled 999. Seven minutes after the call was made, the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) was tasked from Cambridge to provide enhanced pre-hospital emergency medicine at the scene, landing at the farm at 16:57. The EAAA team worked with the ambulance, police and fire and rescue teams to assess Mr Willis’s injuries and coordinate the complex extrication process to get Jonathan safely to hospital for life-saving surgery. The forklift tine had entered through Mr Willis’s lower back and exited through his abdomen, posing severe risk to several internal organs and blood vessels, making it a life-threatening situation.

Mr Willis, who remained conscious throughout, had to be kept as still as possible while the steel forklift tine was cut with an angle grinder to release him from his trapped state. During this process his weight was supported on an ambulance trolley.

Pain relief Mr Willis required advanced pain relief in the form of ketamine to relieve the pain, without making him too drowsy. The length, weight and position of the tine – still in place – meant that Mr Willis could not be safely transferred in the helicopter. Doctors James Hale and Nathan Howes – and critical care paramedic Andy Bates – travelled with Mr Willis in the ground ambulance for just over an hour to get him to Addenbrooke’s Hospital where a surgical team was ready and waiting. Consultant Dr Nathan Howes said: “I have worked for East Anglian Air Ambulance since 2015, and frequently attend incidents involving trapped patients, but I had never been to an incident quite like this, or met a patient quite like Jonathan. “It was incredibly important that any movement of Jonathan or the tine was minimised, in case it worsened any internal bleeding, but we also needed to free him quickly. “The advanced pain relief that we carry was still a risk.

Jonathan Willis now at his farm holding the remaining piece of tine which he was freed from Below: Emmanuel Huguet, who headed up the surgical team, with Jonathan Willis holding up a tine similar to the one which impaled him (pictures EAAA)

“I was so impressed by how stoic Jonathan and his wife, Wendy, were. This definitely helped while we devised a plan with the fire and rescue and ambulance services to support him, cut the tine and release him safely.” Led by expert surgeon Mr Emmanuel Huguet, the surgical teams worked throughout the night to save Mr Willis, operating on him for almost seven hours. Eventually, the thick steel tine was removed.

Months of recovery Just two weeks later, Mr Willis was discharged to recover at home, although it took almost five months for his wounds to heal fully. Being a piece of farm machinery, the tine also put him at a high risk of infection, especially as it had punctured his bowels.

Mr Huguet said: “It seemed near impossible for someone to have survived such injuries as that area of the abdomen is full of overlapping tightly-packedtogether organs and very major blood vessels. There were about 30 people in the operating theatre at one point, including staff who held the spike in place while surgeons were sure it was safe to remove. A year on from the accident, the Willis family has raised £45,000 at a charity ball for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, to thank them for their part in the rescue and to help keep the helicopter in the air. Mr Willis said: “What happened to me was just such an unusual accident and I’m just so, so thankful that there were so many expert teams available to help me get through it. Otherwise, I’m sure the outcome could have been very different.”

Campaign call to stamp out soil compaction

T

yre manufacturer Continental is working with other agri-businesses to raise awareness of soil compaction caused by heavy machinery – and to highlight the simple measures that can reduce the problem. The Stamp Out Soil Compaction campaign has been launched to demonstrate how the right choice of tyres and maintaining tyre pressures can help to minimise soil compaction. Continental has also developed a mobile app to help operators choose the correct pressure for any given load, says Richard Hutchins, who is the tyre maker’s agricultural specialist. The company is working with ADAS soil scientist John Williams. Up to 30% of UK soils are severely degraded, he says. And some 39% of the cost attributed to compaction could be reduced by choosing the correct tyres and running machines at the optimum pressure for load. The first machinery test used a Kuhn Optimer XL 5000 to show how reducing pressures to half the recommended road inflation reduced soil compaction and improved the operating efficiency of tractor and cultivator. On a stubble field, the rear tyres of a Fendt 720

were set to 9psi and the front to 12psi – less than half the recommended road pressure. “It demonstrates the difference needed to operate at the right pressure for load when using large implements,” says Mr Williams. In contrast, the same tractor was also run at 21psi in both the front and rear tyres. Tyre slip increased dramatically when pressures were increased, rising from below 10% to above 40%. “The tractor was visibly struggling for grip and was leaving skid marks in the soil. A greater percentage of the overall weight was being applied to a smaller surface area which severely compacted the soil.” Increased axle weights, caused by heavy implements and more powerful machines, could be offset by tyres that can spread this weight, says Mr Hutchins. “Damage to topsoil is caused by incorrect tyre inflation, while compaction in subsoil is largely caused by increased axle loads. Calculating the correct pressure for load will minimise the impact farming has on both.” Continental’s free Agriculture TireTech app calculates the correct pressure for load based on the type of tyre and weight of vehicle.

Continental has launched its ‘Stamp Out Soil Compaction’ campaign to offer advice on using tyres efficiently to improve soil health, says Richard Hutchins

LAMMA 2022

Flagship LAMMA show celebrates 40th year • Thousands of visitors expected at show • Two-day event with over 700 exhibitors • Manufacturers showcase their products

O

rganisers are putting the finishing touches to next month’s LAMMA event – which celebrates its 40th year in 2022. More than 700 exhibitors will showcase their latest products at the flagship agricultural machinery event, which is due to take place at the Birmingham NEC on 11-12 January. The two-day show will see manufacturers, dealers and distributors filling 11 halls at the NEC. As well as the latest machinery, visitors will be able to see the latest services available for all sectors of the industry.

Deep roots “To celebrate this important milestone in LAMMA’s history, we are not only looking at our past, but focusing on the future of our event and the UK farming industry,” says LAMMA event manager Kate Walsh. “LAMMA’s beginnings are

deeply rooted in bringing the best of farm machinery innovation under one roof and looking to the future – something we aim to continue for the next 40 years and beyond.” The Farm Safety Zone, sponsored by Safety Revolution, returns to the show for the fourth consecutive year. Key organisations, charities and industry figures will raise awareness on vital aspects of farm safety and how to minimise risk and accidents on farm. A Farming 4.0 Trail will focus on the Future of Agriculture – highlighting the role data, robotics and other devices will play in achieving Net Zero. Exhibitors

We are focusing on the future of UK farming

already on the 2022 Trail include Airial Robotics, Crop4Sight, Agrifac and Bayer.

Historic moment Also with an eye on the future, LAMMA has partnered with the Institution of Agricultural Engineers to offer the 2021 Young Engineer Award, celebrating upcoming agricultural engineers. The award winner will be announced at the show. “We are delighted to be part of LAMMA’s celebration of this historic moment,” says Sanjeev Khaira, director of Arc Media, which recently acquired the LAMMA event from AgriBriefing. The 2022 event will be the first for two years after the show fell victim to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of holding an inperson event, organisers focused on their digital farm machinery platform LAMMA365 instead. The platform brings all facets of farm machinery together. It contains the latest news and industry trends, review comparison tool, independent product reviews, videos, podcasts, webinars and a directory of manufacturers and dealers.

All about LAMMA Getting there Parking is free for the event and the NEC is clearly signposted from all motorways and major routes – just put B40 1NT in your sat nav. Once you arrive, don’t follow your satnav, look out for LAMMA on the signs. Once parked up, a free shuttle bus will be waiting for you to take you to the show entrance, or you can walk along the signposted footpaths. Covid measures The LAMMA event will be held in accordance with the latest UK government and Public Health England recommendations for COVID-secure exhibitions. High-performance soil-engagement is focus for Spaldings at LAMMA

T

illso soil restructuring tines with different point and wing combinations will feature alongside the SPL Ultra range of soil-engaging parts on the Spaldings stand at LAMMA. Spaldings is sole distributor of Tillso’s Sabre system, a multi-component assembly of points and wings designed for efficient restructuring of compacted soils; the designs result from intensive studies of soil mechanics. The system comprises a common point and shin and four soillifting wing assemblies to suit different soil types and working depths. Tillso owner Chris Lane will join Spaldings managing director Steve Constable to talk through benefits of the system. Mr Lane said the partnership marked a return to the LAMMA event for Tillso. It will be the first time the company has exhibited at the indoor show.

Best results “Being with the technical team on the Spaldings stand will be a great opportunity to explain to farmers how we arrived at the Sabre designs, how they work beneath the surface, and how users can be sure of getting the best results in different situations.” The retro-fit components are available for a number of different manufacturers’ subsoilers, and also cultivators fitted with soil-loosening tines. A one-piece delta-shaped wing is used on the Ultralite for 150250mm working depths and 400-

500mm spacing, while the Mono is designed for 225-400mm and 600-750mm spacing. Tillso’s Lite and Max products have a cast supporting frog with separate left- and right-hand bolt-on wing assemblies. These are formed as a wide wing slat or with two chisel-like wing slats for deeper working. Mr Lane explains: “They are all calculated to apply controlled tension to compacted soil, which fractures as it is lifted and falls off the wings to permanently rearrange the soil aggregates.” The Spaldings exhibit will also include items from the SPL Ultra range of premium-quality points, wings and shins for leading makes of cultivator and subsoiler, as well as the laser scanning technology that measures wear patterns and 3D printer for prototypes used in the development of these parts. Original wearing parts for Grimme machinery will also be shown as Spaldings is an approved national dealer for these components.

Vegetation control TMC Cancela, the leading manufacturer of mulching pasture toppers and forestry mulchers, will also be represented at the show, highlighting Spaldings’ grow-

Jack Martin, who has experience of the agricultural parts sector, is the sales representative for Wearing Metal. His remit is to encourage agricultural dealers to stock the new brand – so replacement parts are readily available from more local dealers. Wearing Metal parts can also be ordered directly from Opico and shipped straight to farm. The new brand will be located on stand 6.116 in Hall 6.

isitors to LAMMA 2022 will be the first to see Bema exhibit its Kommunal 580 Dual and Kommunal 450 Dual – the latest additions to its range of sweepers. Launched during lockdown, the Kommunal 580 Dual and Kommunal 450 Dual are designed primarily for municipal use. But they are multi-purpose machines and can also be used around the farm. Bema will also be exhibiting the Jumbo and 30 Dual sweepers alongside several snow ploughs and attachments for tractors and John Deere vehicles at LAMMA on Stand 20.320. The Bema Kommunal 580 Dual is available as a PPN or snow brush PPN in six working

widths from 1250mm to 2050mm. The main brush of the 580 Dual is 580mm in diameter and is offered with a steel/PPN, steel flat wire/ PPN and Bema’s weed brush. The 450 Dual has a new, wider 450mm diameter brush which is easily changeable, making the move from PPN to snow brush PPN effortless. If required, the

450 Dual can be supplied with a steel/PPN mixture brush, steel flat wire/PPN brush or the Bema Weed brush, which offer a 400mm diameter reinforced drive. A 480mm diameter rotary side brush is a key feature of the 450 Dual. Bema’s side control feature can be fitted to either the left or right-hand side of the sweeper.

As with the main brush, the side brush can be specified as PPN, steel/PPN, steel flat wire / PPN, steel flat wire or a weed brush. Howard Marshall Engineering will also have a significant presence on the Bema stand as it showcases its attachments manufactured and supplied to John Deere dealers.

Sales directors drive global growth at Tong

V

egetable handling equipment specialist Tong Engineering has appointed two new sales directors to drive customer growth. Simon Lee started his career at the company as an assembly engineer, when Tong acquired Peal Engineering in 2005. He progressed through the ranks to become the company’s service manager before joining the Tong sales team in 2009. Since becoming sales manager, Mr Lee has worked on numerous handling projects with vegetable growers and packers of all sizes in the UK and overseas. Tong says he will help drive further customer growth worldwide. “The handling requirements of vegetable growers and processors are evolving all the time and I look forward to developing our sales strategy to expand existing and new markets in the years to come,” says Mr Lee. Charlie Rich has also spent much of his career with Tong Engineering, joining the company in 2001 after an engineering apprenticeship. His previous roles include time as a factorybased engineer and a service and in-

stallations engineer. Mr Rich joined the sales team in 2009 as export manager, during which time he played a key role in expanding Tong’s export business overseas, while working closely with some of the UK’s largest vegetable producers on advanced handling projects. “I’ve been with Tong for such a large part of my career,” says Mr Rich. “See-

ing it grow to the multi-million-pound family business it is today – and knowing I’ve been a part of that – is extremely rewarding.” Tong managing direct Edward Tong says the company is determined to build a highly focused and ambitious senior management team that will ensure its customer remain at the heart of its expansion plans.

Drone software launches in virtual reality

N

ew features of Drone Ag’s Skippy Scout crop monitoring software will be available to experience in virtual reality at LAMMA. “The headset will show users how Skippy Scout enables them to see a whole field from above and zoom in on specific parts of the field that have been imaged by a drone,” says Drone Ag founder Jack Wrangham. A Scout Spheres interface provides users with interactive whole field viewing. “We are the only provider to offer users a drone-enabled, full field overview that includes the ability to focus on any area of the field and choose where to inspect at leaf-level.” Mr Wrangham stresses that this is not future technology and that drones with this software are already being used on farms throughout the UK. “A drone with Skippy can walk a crop 20 times faster than a farmer on foot. “PDF reports are generated immediately showing the green area index

and the number of plants. This technology is being used by hundreds of farmers already and the data will soon be used to support the use of spraying drones too.” To show the full extent to which drone captured images can improve crop management, Drone Ag will also be exhibiting one of the latest DJI spraying drones that has a 20-litre capacity and is also capable of granular spreading. “Users can program spraying drones like the DJI model we will have on the stand. Using this technology can help to reduce soil compaction and the use of chemical by deploying a spraying drone to target only the plants that require treatment.” The new software is £30 per month and is compatible with Apple devices and most off-the-shelf drones. Drone Ag says it can save time, find weeds and disease faster, and harvest the data needed to improve the sustainability of broad acre crop farming.

Drones are getting smaller – and more useful too
