Broadwater's main market is Europe, where one of its key customers is based, although its products are in daily use worldwide.
Broadwater's market position has changed from purely a parts supplier to a strategic design partner for its main customers and has significantly expanded its manufacturing capabilities and processes in recent years.
Overseas sales have grown by 90% over the three year application period and the proportion of sales exported has increased to 66% of total sales.
The company wins the King's Award for International Trade in overseas sales over the last three years.
Managing Director Matt Herbert said: "This award recognises the achievements of the entire Broadwater team, some of whom have worked in and have been dedicated to developing the business over decades. We have worked extremely hard to
achieve the growth we've seen and this has inevitably presented challenges: every person working at both our manufacturing sites has risen to those challenges. I'm extremely grateful to every one of our people and I'm looking forward to continuing with them to build on our success. We are incredibly proud to be honoured with this award."
The King's Awards for Enterprise (previously known as The Queen's Awards for Enterprise) was renamed in 2023 to reflect His Majesty The King's desire to continue the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II's by recognising outstanding UK businesses. The award programme, now in its 58th year, is the most prestigious business award in the country, with successful businesses able to display the esteemed King's Awards Emblem for the next five years.

Commemorating 80 years since sacrifice at Kessingland monument
On April 22nd, a commemoration of 80 years since the original installation of a monument at Kessingland's St. Edmunds Church was carried out to mark the crew
sacrifice of a USAF Liberator Bomber, when returning from a raid on Germany, was attacked and destroyed on it's approach to landing at RAF Seething by an enemy Night Fighter. The installation of the monument was arranged and
donated by the local branch of the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA), Beccles & Southwold area in 2009.
A wing detached from the United States aircraft and it sustained un-surviveable damage. The aircraft crashed in the Kessingland marshes area. None of the 10 US aircrew survived the crash and their names are recorded in perpetuity on the monument at St. Edmunds Church, Kessingland. The RAFA Beccles &

President, Mr. Brian Vousden (91 yrs), commented: "On Monday 22nd of April 2024, at the invitation of the Revd. Mandy Bishop, our branch, together with that of the Royal British Legion, both Beccles & Wrentham branches, together with a colour party from the USAF Lakenheath base, attended a commemoration of 80 years since the incident to pay our respects and thanks to the brave aircrew who lost their lives for us in 1944 in the defence of
freedom. Their names were read out as wreaths were laid.
At 10:30am, the National Standards of both the United Kingdom and the United States were dipped in salute, together with the RAFA standard and the "Last Post" followed by the US "Taps" was sounded. A twominute silence was observed. We were privileged and honoured to have had this opportunity to again attend and express our thanks and gratitude for their sacrifice. We will remember them."

Events at Wrentham Chapel
Classic Cars visit Wrentham Chapel:
13 classic vehicles, spanning 80 years of motoring history, visited Wrentham Chapel for national Drive-it Day on April 21st. The Chapel opened from 10am-4pm, offering a variety of refreshments and other 'pit stop' facilities.
The weather was dry and sunny, giving drivers and passengers time to linger and chat whilst admiring one another's vehicles. The Chapel was also pleased to welcome other visitors who called in to see the display and view the Chapel.
Songs, Sonnets & Suchlike:
Wrentham Chapel's next
Caedmon evening will be held on Wednesday June 19th at 7pm. Celebrate a Suffolk summer solstice with this evening of 'bring and share' music, word and song. A light buffet with wine and fruit juice will be served in the interval. There is no charge but donations towards the upkeep of the Chapel will be much appreciated. For further details, contact Sue on: 07771 882738.
Upcoming summer event at Sibton Church
A summer art exhibition is planned for July 13th and 14th at Sibton Church, IP17 2NB, with visiting the Sibton Abbey Ruin also available.
Creative artists and craftspeople known for their work, including Suffolk Craft Society exhibitors, will have work on display and for sale and local artists are being invited to take part as well.
The ambience and space at Sibton Church provides the perfect setting for such an event, giving an unusual opportunity in which to contemplate the art of today in an ancient setting. A walk to the nearby Sibton Abbey Ruin can only add to that sense of the influence of art, and the artistic life, in enriching our experience of heritage.
To add further interest for visitors, demonstrations will show how art works come into being. For example, in stained glass creation as well as in other art forms. The Sibton Abbey Ruin site will be open to visitors, and artists who wish will be able to use
Understanding the VAT threshold and when to register
Becoming VAT registered is often a milestone in the life cycle of a business and with it comes a wide range of compliance requirements and deadlines. It's important to be one step ahead and have a plan in place for when this happens, so that your business can continue with little disruption.
A key part to being prepared is understanding when your business is required to register for VAT and the dates that this is effective from. Let's dive into the criteria:
Threshold amount:
The current VAT registration threshold for the UK has, from the 1st April 2024, been increased to £90,000 from £85,000 as confirmed by the Chancellor in his 2024 Spring Budget. This comes as a welcome change for small businesses who have a general private customer base and would be negatively affected by becoming VAT registered.
When to register:
If your total VAT taxable turnover for the last 12 months exceeds £90,000 (the VAT threshold), you must register for VAT within 30 days of reaching this level. It's important to note that this is looked at on a rolling basis, meaning that it's crucial to have up-to-date, reliable data making you able at any given point, to assess whether you have exceeded the threshold.
Alternatively, if you expect that your turnover will go over £90,000 in the next 30 days, you should also register promptly.
Even if your turnover is below the threshold, you can register for VAT voluntarily, which can prove advantageous if your taxable
outgoings exceed your taxable incomings.
Effective date of registration:
If you exceeded the threshold in the last 12 months, your effective date of registration is the first day of the second month after you went over the threshold.
For example, if your VAT taxable turnover exceeded £90,000 between 10 July 2023 and 9 July 2024, you must register by 30 August 2024, and your effective date of registration would be 1 September 2024.
If you anticipate exceeding the threshold in the next 30 days, you must register by the end of that 30-day period, and your effective date of registration will be the date you became aware of this, not the date your turnover went over the threshold.
Exemptions:
If everything you sell is exempt from VAT, you do not have to register for VAT. However, if you sell goods or services that are VAT exempt and are based in Northern Ireland, you'll need to register if you buy goods for more than £90,000 from EU VATregistered suppliers to use in your business.
By staying on top of this, you can ensure that your business' transition to becoming VAT registered is without the hiccups that many others experience.
Please note that this summary is for information purposes only, and specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.

the opportunity to draw, paint and photograph at leisure in the iconic surroundings of these remaining ancient walls.
Sibton is famous for its refreshments which will be available all day. The exhibition opens at 10:30am and closes at 4pm, so there's ample opportunity to walk down to the abbey site during your visit. Free car parking is available on the old glebe field next to the churchyard at IP17 2LX.
For visitors to the exhibition, day tickets at £5 will be on sale at Eventbrite from June 15th, and also at Peasenhall General Store and the Weavers Tea Rooms. Tickets will be available on the door when the exhibition is open. For artists who'd like to exhibit, pre-booking for any remaining space is available by contacting 07496 373579, though early booking is advisable.
We look forward to presenting this special exhibition and promise an interesting experience for visitors and artists alike.
Cliff Edge Theatre
Halesworth resident Juliet Corbett has founded a brand new theatre company 'Cliff Edge Theatre'.
Juliet founded Cliff Edge Theatre in 2023, with a vision to promote the work of writers and actors primarily over the age of 50. Cliff Edge has a mission to write and perform new works that have a bold, risky, unsettling edge.
The premiere production, 'Daddy's Girl' was performed at The Cut, Halesworth in 2023.
Her latest venture, 'No Country for Old Women' is partnered with The Field Theatre Company in Littleport, Cambridgeshire. It features "three bad ass old bags and a callow youth". 'No Country for Old Women' mixes music, comedy and drama to overturn preconceptions about later life and bring a fresh perspective on
the serious business of "growing old disgracefully".
Funded by the National Lottery, 'No Country for Old Women' is touring Suffolk theatres from June 26th to 28th. For bookings and enquiries, please contact either Fisher Theatre Bungay on: 01986 897130, The Cut Halesworth by emailing: boxoffice@thecut.org. uk or calling: 0300 3033211 or Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall on: 01728 454022 .
BOOM & BUST in medieval Lavenham
From
Summer Solstice to Autumn Equinox Sculpture at the heart of Suffolk's Sandlings
Waveney and Blyth Arts is building a programme of walks, talks, exhibitions and workshops for the second half of 2024. First out of the stocks is the newly revamped Sandlings Summer Sculpture Show, an extended residency at Potton Hall (IP17 3EF) between Westleton and Dunwich, which will run for three months from June 20th to Sept 22nd. The show is open daily from 10am5pm and entrance is FREE. A wide range of sculptures, assemblages and installations are for sale, including works in stone, steel, glass, clay and galvanised wire. If you'd like to buy one or more of the creations on display then we put you in touch with the artist concerned so that you can buy direct and collect by arrangement within days of purchase, rather than
having to wait until the show ends. Our hope is that this will enable the show to change over time as individual works are sold and are replaced by new ones. Potton Hall itself is undergoing refurbishment to match its visitor-facing development. Car parking is now on hard standing. There's a safe tree house for younger children and the unique 'Africa' themed Yurt Bistro for light lunches, moreish bites and refreshments. Plus (by prior booking) there are a wide range of therapies as well as a spa and outdoor swimming pool. Find out more at www.potton-
hall.co.uk, or for this and other events run by Waveney and Blyth Arts, visit: www.waveneyandblytharts.com So this summer, come and enjoy a whole new experience! Your senses will be stimulated and your mind relaxed, all at the same time!
Rumburgh Buck presented with fourth CAMRA award
Stella and Tyrone Cattermole (Managers of The Rumburgh Buck near Halesworth) were presented with a fourth 'outstanding pub' award on Saturday April 20th. The pub, which hit national news following a visit by global superstar Ed Sheeran last November, has been voted 2024 Overall Pub of The Year by members of North East Suffolk CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) having won two CAMRA awards in 2023 and another in 2022.
Mrs. Cattermole took on the pub in 2019, just six months before Covid hit and all pubs were forced to close, while her husband
continued to work as a butcher at Cleveleys, helping in the pub at the weekends. He now works full time as the pub's cook. The Rumburgh Buck is the first pub that the couple have managed. "It's really exciting to be recognised four times" said Mrs. Cattermole, who had a career in marketing before taking on the pub in 2019, adding "It's a big achievement for us."
A focus on the customer, getting the basics right and "very, very good staff" is behind their success, according to Mr. Cattermole. "We listen to what the customers are asking for and deliver what they want." "We do a lot of gluten-free products now" added Mrs. Cattermole. Chris Luck from North East Suffolk CAMRA said: "It's a very welcoming, well-run pub with a loyal group of customers." www.rumburghbuck.co.uk

Local customers Stuart and Joanne Cullen, owners of nearby Oasis Barn Holidays, enjoy meeting friends and neighbours at the pub. "It's so friendly and welcoming" said Mrs. Cullen, "I feel safe going there on my own." "Very good beer" added Mr. Cullen, "I love the live folk bands."

CAMRA's Mike Davey presents award to Stella and Tyrone Cattermole
Halesworth & District U3A presents 'BOOM & BUST in medieval Lavenham' at the Cut Arts Centre, Halesworth on June 18th, starting at 2:30pm. The beautiful timber-framed buildings for which Lavenham is so famous are the legacy of a thriving industry in cloth production, whose cloth merchants made Lavenham one Lavenham Guildhall of the wealthiest towns in Tudor England. This talk by Jane Gosling (former Manager of the National Trust's Guildhall) explores their rise to fame, the houses they left behind and the inevitable crash that followed. Talks are free to U3A members, for non-members tickets are available online or at the door for £4. All are welcome. Halesworth & District U3A BecBun & Leiston 11 & Hales 19 Community News - June 2024

The Hoppa: From shuttle to stage, supporting community events and youth sport triumphs!
The Hoppa has been very busy over the past few weeks, not only providing a regular scheduled service around Halesworth and Holton, but also supporting the local community in many ways.
For example, during the recent Ink Festival, the Hoppa performed as both a shuttle service and a theatre. As a shuttle, we carried at least 50 passengers a day. But one of the Hoppa buses also became a theatre for the duration of the festival and hosted a very successful series of plays, which must make it one of the smallest theatres in the country. As a theatre, the Hoppa
had regular full-houses and had visits from well-known actors, such as Georgie Glen from Call the Midwife and Suffolk born Mike Maloney who recently appeared in The Crown.
Another example of our service to the local community comes with our hire for the Bungay Town Black Dogs U10s youth football team. They played for the Norfolk & Suffolk Cup this year and won their cup final to bring home their first ever silverware.
As one of the organising team wrote: "Win or lose, we knew that experiences like this don't come around very often and
so when we wanted to hire a bus, we were so grateful to the Halesworth Hoppa team for helping out. Especially when we realised at 8am on Sunday morning that we had the wrong date on the form and they still moved heaven and earth to get a driver out of bed and still get us to Norwich in time!
Thank you so much to Julia and drivers Alan and John, who were so incredibly accommodating and helpful. They made the boys day extra special, and they loved bringing the cup back to the clubhouse on the bus, singing "We are the champions" all the way."
Beccles Town FC pathways to adult teams
Beccles Town Football Club U18s are holding an open training sessions ahead of the 24-25 campaign on June 17th, from 8pm-10pm.

The club is proud to support player progression with 17 players this season gaining adult football experience. To register interest, please contact Theo on 07542 235145. Please note: To be eligible for the Thurlow Nunn League, players NEED to be aged 15 by August 31st, 2024.

• Average maximum temp: 14.22C (57F) in 2024. 13.08C (55F) in 2023. 13.40C (56F) on average.
• Average minimum temp: 6.40C (43F) in 2024. 4.74C (40F) in 2023. 4.60C (40F) on average.
• Mean temp: 10.31C (50F) in 2024. 8.91C (48F) in 2023. 9.00C (48F) on average.
• Air frosts: Nil compared with 2 in April 2023.
• Rainfall total: 2.52" compared with 2.17" in April 2023. 30year average (1981-2010) 1.85". 2024 total: 136% of the average.
• Most rainfall on one day: 0.77" on the 27th.
• Wind direction, mainly from: South-west 8 days, north-west 8 days, north-east 4 days, southeast 4 days and south 3 days. April 2024 was somewhat milder and wetter than the long-term average. It was a very eventful month of two distinct halves. The first half was very mild, while the second half was distinctly chilly at times, especially when the chill of northerly type winds were taken into account. This excluded the last 2 days, when temperatures recovered somewhat.
A run of south to southwesterly winds during the first half of April were initially moist as low pressure dominated the first 9 days. During the 10th to 14th, high pressure formed to block the fronts and depressions from the Atlantic. This in consequence brought us the longest dry spell and also 3 of
the 4 warmest days of the month (19.5C, 20.1C and 21.4C, 11th to 13th respectively). A switch of wind direction to north-west after the passing of 2 cold fronts was in place by the 15th. Daytime maximum temperatures for the next fortnight were in the region of 10-12 degrees Celsius, while night minimum temperatures fell to 2 to 3 degrees Celsius on 9 nights. These figures were below the long-term average but overall, this was the mildest April since 2020 and also the first April since that date to avoid an air frost.
To underline this, there were some notable facts. 21.4C on the 13th was the warmest April day since the 11th and 12th April 2020. 11.8C on the 5th was the mildest April night since the 18th April 2014. 9.4C on the 24th was the least coolest April day since the 3rd and 4th April 2015. While +2.0C on the 21st, 25th and 26th were the least coldest April nights since the 14th April 2020. Following a run of dry Aprils since 2005, this was only the 6th wetter-than-average (and 2nd consecutive) in that time (20 years). The outstanding figure
of these was 5.07" in 2012. 11 of the remaining 14 can be classed as very dry, recording less than an inch total. April 2022 total of 0.28", the 5th driest April on my entire record. Nil in 2007, 0.18" in 2009, 0.19" in 1996, and 0.22" in 2011 were the lower totals than that. For comparison purposes this year to date rainfall at 30th April 2024 now totals 10.79 inches compared to 7.62 inches at this time last year and just 4.81 inches at this time in 2022. The 2.52" total made this the wettest April since 2018 and 18 rain days noted was the highest for the month since 2016. There were 6 consecutive rain days during period 15th to 20th and also 5 running 1st to 5th. 0.77 inches on the 27th was the wettest day of the month and also the wettest April day since 30/04/2018. This transformed the month into "wetter-thanaverage". The other notable rain day during this month was 0.44 inches noted on the 3rd. Prospects of the better days to come were experienced on the 1st and 2nd of May with long sunny periods and maximum temperatures of 21.7C and 20.0C respectively.
Ditchingham & District Men's Shed (formerly Ditchingham Men's Shed) have changed our name slightly, as we're attracting members as far away as Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Hempnall. We now have 44 members, ladies very welcome. You can come along and learn new skills, bring something along that needs renovating, or just come for the social interaction. We grow our own vegetables, so there's always weeding and mowing to be done. We've been very busy doing jobs for the council, repairing furniture and completing a bird box order including a sparrow hotel and an owl box. We've also presented the Moorings Residential Home with six busy boards. Please come along and say hello. We are based at the Wetlands Centre, Earsham, NR35 2AF. 10am-12pm, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
