Beccles & Bungay Community News - November 2023 - 3

Update from Harleston & District U3A 1977, with its cast showing signs of age, it had entrenched itself into the fabric of British comedy and it remains idolised and quoted by fans worldwide. Further information about this and all Harleston & District U3A's activities can be found on our website: www.u3asites.org.uk/ harleston or by contacting Kim Poulton on 01986 788149. You may also like to take a look at Harleston Choral Society's website (www. harlestonchoralsoc.org.uk) and what the choir is singing in preparation for its Christmas concert on December 9th.

Better access at Bungay Museum Plans are being discussed to make Bungay Museum more accessible. The museum is currently housed upstairs in two rooms in the Town Council building in Broad Street. The installation of a lift is included in the scheme. This would take visitors to all floors including the elegant woodpanelled Council Chamber with its impressive leaded bay window. A proposed draft plan was explained at the museum's recent annual meeting. "Plans are at an early stage, they are still under discussion," stressed Chair of the Museum. John Adams. The project could involve opening up the whole downstairs and moving the museum collection to the ground floor. This is a long-term plan and will involve getting grant funding. However, the museum is proving an important asset to the town. When it opened for the season, Mr. Adams challenged the team to attract 1,000 visitors this year. "We are nearly there," said Mr. Adams. "We should make it by the time we close for the winter, on October 28th."

The Hundred Speak Again

In the meantime, the team of volunteers continue working sorting and cataloguing the collection in the archive at No 8A, Market Place and fundraising for the upkeep of the collection. The museum shop will be selling from stalls at local venues. Handmade Christmas decorations as well as Fair Trade decorations are being added to the range of cards and books regularly stocked by the shop at festive events. To celebrate the switching on of the Christmas lights on the town William Elliot 1837-1908 centre, on November 25th, the museum shop will have a stall. 197212 Then the stall moves to Emmaus, at Ditchingham, for the charity fundraising Victorian market on December 2nd and back to Bungay for a presence at the annual Christmas street market on December 3rd. Help us meet our target by visiting Bungay Museum, in Broad Street; open Saturdays 10am-3pm and Sundays and Thursdays 10am-1pm until October 28th. Metfield Stores needs a new Company Secretary... Could it be you?

Beccles Inner Wheel Club If you're an organised you settle into the role. Beccles Inner Wheel is a thriving club for those interested in giving service to the community and beyond while enjoying the friendship of like-minded women. They support many local events such as Cycle for Life and the Hospital Fête as well as enjoying social activities, all of which raise funds for good causes. One such event held in September was a bric-a-brac

and cake stall in Beccles precinct, which proved very popular with passing pedestrians and raised just under £400. This was organised by our International Secretary Angela Raven and the proceeds will go to one or more of the current disasters that are afflicting so many individuals world-wide. If you'd like more information about our club and our activities, please ring our Membership Secretary on 01502 712067.

Roughcast Autumn Tour November 8th-19th

RoughCast present one of the greatest of all English war plays. Journey's End shows the effect of war on a group of young officers. R.C Sherriff's groundbreaking play remains one of the most powerful and successful pieces of modern drama and one of the most acclaimed examples of literature that deals with the tragedy and horror of conflict. Set over the course of four days leading up to a massive German attack on the British trenches in 1918, Journey's End charts the tension and claustrophobia as the new recruit to the company, Lieutenant Raleigh, discovers

that Captain Stanhope (his former childhood friend and hero) has changed almost beyond recognition. Performances at: Beccles Public Hall (8th), Diss Corn Hall (9th), Fisher Theatre Bungay (10th and 11th), The Cut, Halesworth (17th) and Wingfield Barns (18th and 19th). Tickets are £12 per person and £6 for students. All performances start at 7:30pm. Proceeds from programme sales will be donated to the Royal British Legion. To book, visit the venues, details at: www.roughcast.co.uk. For enquiries, please phone: 01379 586745.

spoon over cider vinegar and a splash of water. Cook on high for 6 hours, or low for 8. - Once cooked and slightly cooled, shred the turkey. (Alternatively, use leftover precooked and shredded turkey). - Pre-heat your oven to 200°C. - To assemble the Wellington, place one sheet of puff pastry onto a lightly greased baking sheet and spoon on a layer of stuffing evenly in the centre. Ensure you leave 5cm from short edges and roughly 8cm at long edges. - Layer shredded turkey then finish with Classic Cranberry Sauce on top. Do not press into turkey. - Brush round the outside of pastry layer with egg. Lift the second piece of pastry and place on top of the turkey, pressing the pastry over the sides. Trim the pastry joins to about 4cm and seal the edges with the back of a fork. Brush all over with the remaining beaten egg. Use a sharp knife and carefully make diagonal slits into the pastry, ensuring not to cut through. - Cook for 30-35 minutes. The pastry should be golden and crisp. - Allow the meat to rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Deben Rotary's Santa Sleigh schedule

Westhall Charity FC We are now coming up to our last charity football match of the year on November 5th. Looking ahead to next year, we are already booked on charity spots which include: Artbox Halesworth for Special Needs, Waveney Deaf Society, Autism East Anglia, The Brain Tumour Charity, The League of Friends Halesworth. Obviously this far ahead things could be adjusted or change slightly.

This year, we will once again be attempting all the roads on the Heath with our Santa Sleigh. We will constantly update our website and also try and do the same with the Martlesham Parish Council. We will be collecting money but will NOT be knocking on doors. We will have just a few Rotarians with the sleigh, with collecting buckets. For more details, please see: www.debenrotary.org.uk All money collected is for the charity trust fund of the club, from which we support local, district, national and international charities. Charity No: 1151275. A current snapshot of items waiting to go back to their owners ranges from a Georgian door lock to a 1990's CD player, via a card table, barometer and a cuddly toy. We have more stuff to mend than people to mend it, and though it's not a bad problem to have, you can see we need all kinds of people to help out. So whatever your expertise or skill level, there's bound to be a role for you. Just as important as repair work is the admin side of things. As the Shed develops, there will be more sessions in the week, so people can help out at a time which suits them best. On a personal level, it's a chance to acquire and

develop skills, and work with like-minded individuals. The purposeful work makes for fun and fulfilling sessions. But it's also part of a wider movement towards sustainability and reducing waste. We can all play a part in that. Get in touch. For more information, visit our website: www.suffolkrepairshed.org or email: hello@suffolkrepairshed.org. Tax benefits and the festive spirit

Charity Christmas Card Shop opens in Woodbridge The traditional Charity Christmas Card Shop in Woodbridge opens at HSBC, 37 Thoroughfare, Woodbridge, IP12 1AH, on October 23rd. The shop is organised by Woodbridge 41 Club, and proceeds are used to support local charities and other good causes. The 41 Club organiser, Roger Parker commented: "We're looking forward to a great season selling cards and supporting many very worthwhile causes. Sending a Christmas card is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. I am very grateful to all the volunteers and customers who

support the shop." The shop stocks the largest selection of charity cards in Suffolk from over 20 different charities. This includes favourites such as: RNLI, Marie Curie Cancer, Barnardos, Blue Cross and Amnesty. Additional local charities include: St. Elizabeth Hospice, East Anglian Children's Hospices, Somersham Ward, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Suffolk Wildlife Trust. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, (9:30am to 5pm on Saturdays). Please do visit, you won't find a better selection!

As the holiday season approaches, many businesses are preparing to celebrate the festive period with their employees. From decorating the office to hosting memorable end of year parties, these seasonal festivities can also bring about some tax benefits that you may or may not be aware of. Trivial tax benefits are small perks that employers can provide to their employees without them incurring additional tax liabilities. These benefits are often seen to boost morale, improve workplace culture, and show appreciation to the workforce. Whilst these perks may not seem significant individually, they can add up and provide savings for both employers and employees. For businesses, hosting an annual party can be a taxdeductible expense if the 'annual function exemption' criteria are met. To qualify for this generous tax benefit, the event must be available to all employees and the cost per head must not exceed £150 (including VAT). This includes travel, accommodation and other associated costs that contribute to the fun! Employees will also benefit

from this as it will allow them to attend a festive celebration without worrying about additional tax liabilities. It's a brilliant way for employers to express gratitude to their hardworking teams. Annual parties aren't the only way to enjoy trivial tax benefits. Other common perks include small gifts, such as a hamper, a bottle of wine or a non-cash voucher, that can be given to employees. These gifts are exempt from Income Tax and National Insurance contributions if the cost of the benefit does not exceed £50 per employee (including VAT) and is not cash or a cash voucher. It is also important that the benefit is not provided as part of any contractual obligation or, in recognition of the employee's good performance in the workplace. In most instances, an employee can receive multiple trivial benefits throughout the year, as long as each one does not exceed the limit individually. However, where the employer is a close company, the exemption is capped at a total cost of £300 per tax year where the benefit is provided to an individual who is a director or other office holder

of the company (or a member of their family/household). You must take care not to go over the limits mentioned above, as even doing so by just a nominal amount, will mean you can no longer claim the tax exemptions. If you do overspend, the entire cost will be taxable rather than just the excess or the limits specified. By understanding HMRC's allowance and leveraging trivial tax benefits, you can save money, and enhance your employee satisfaction. For further information, please contact Chrissie Turnbull (pictured) on: chrissie.turnbull@ ensors.co.uk Specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.

Maintenance on the Green with White Bridge closed Since the 1770s when the New Reach waterway was dug for wherry traffic, there has always been a bridge at White Bridge. Was the bridge just for foot traffic? No... It's always been wide enough to accommodate passage by whoever owned the land on either side to cross with a cart, horse and other land management equipment. The current bridge is the latest in that long 250-year line of "accommodation" bridges. The landowner on both sides is now Halesworth Millennium Green Trust, which is the charity that holds the land for the local community. The volunteers who maintain the Green for you need to be able to get across the New Reach with mowers and other tools to keep maintaining the paths so that you can use them. We also need to keep the habitats in good heart for wildlife by haymaking and other conservation work. No need for horses and carts nowadays, just mowers and fully laden wheelbarrows, but these are

wider than simple foot traffic. So, the community needs White Bridge replaced like-for-like and we know that Suffolk County Council, who are responsible for the bridge, has embraced that need. Meanwhile, with the bridge closed, and after such a warm and wet growing season, the volunteers know that everywhere on the Green is a bit more wildand-woolly than usual. We'll keep on doing what we can within the restrictions of not being able to cross the bridge with equipment and we look forward to the day when the closure of White Bridge is a distant memory. Do keep letting us know of any exciting sightings. Have a look at the website (millenniumgreen. halesworth.net) which carries news and information, photos, wildlife records, history and geology. You can contact the Green directly on: thegreen@ halesworth.net and, please only in an emergency, on: 07743 772029.

It is fair to say there is something for everyone here. Of course, the real point of difference in an independent shop such as this is the level of service, knowledge and expertise. The team are always on hand and happy to offer help and advice on getting the right shoe for you. Menswear: Since opening five years ago, Whitings Menswear has gone from strength to strength. Found on the first floor of the shop, there is everything today's casual, country gent could want. Again, as with the shoes, all stock here is hand selected and with four buying seasons throughout the year, the stock is regularly updated with the latest trends. Although this is a menswear section, many of the shoppers are partners and parents shopping for their husbands and sons and with Christmas a couple of months away, this is the ideal place to come and pick up a gift for friends and family. Whitings Menswear stocks clothing from outerwear to underwear and flat caps to braces, along with a good mix of accessories and walking canes. Brands such as Selected Homme, Gurteen, Peter England, Viyella, Fynch Hatton and Joules ensure a good range of budget but always with quality in mind. Of course, having selected your outfit, you do not have far to go to find the perfect shoes to match! Ladieswear: The newest area in this mini department store is ladieswear. This was expanded from a few

items to a full department in the autumn/winter season of 2021. Again, as with the rest of the shop, there is an awful lot of stock here without seeming like it has been crammed into every possible bit of space, it makes for an attractive shop floor and easy shopping experience. This area of the business may be the most recent addition but it came about due to demand and Sara was only too happy to accommodate. Ladies shopping here will be delighted to find brands including Gerry Weber, Selected Femme, FynchHatton, Toggi, Joules, Foil, Marble Scotland and Falke. The seasonally changing stock means there is always something new to come in and have a look at. Thanks to the magician that is Heidi, the team here offer clothing alterations and repairs. If your much-loved jumper has holes in the elbows, or you need your dress taken in, this is the place to come. To complete the offering, if you are shopping for someone else but are unsure of which size or colour they might like, you can always buy a gift voucher and with the festive season on the horizon this is sure to be a popular choice. If you want to see what a modern shop with old-fashioned customer service and values looks like, Sue Read Shoes is a mustvisit for you! You can find the shop at: 16 Thoroughfare, Harleston, call 01379 854332 or visit: www. suereadshoesltd.com for any further information.

Established in 1987, Sue Read Shoes has been a fixture in Harleston for over 35 years. The business has been under the ownership of Sara Whiting since 2016 and continues to evolve and adapt to an everchanging high street scene. Alongside the well-established footwear business, you will find Whitings Menswear on the first floor and a ladieswear department on the ground floor. Sara decided to branch out into menswear five years ago and though there had previously been a small selection of ladieswear in the shop, a new larger dedicated area for this department was created in 2021. Add in a small area set aside for haberdashery and you have what the ladies here now describe as a mini department store. Footwear: Sue Read Shoes has 'what feels like the largest range of ladies and gents footwear in the UK'. Well... That's what Sara and the team say it feels like! There really is a huge selection covering all possible wants and needs. Notable brands in-store include: Gabor, Josef Seibel, Rieker, Geox, Van Dal, Bugatti and Loake, as well as Waldlaufer and Vionic. These last two brands are orthotic shoes and benefit from wide fittings, arch support or super soft textiles, so are great for people who suffer with issues with their feet. For both ladies and gents the range covers all tastes and budgets from high fashion to more everyday wear, you can also find vegan shoes from Westland.

Nursery's harvest celebration

Gippeswyk Singers Gippeswyk Singers are delighted to present "A Winter's Night". A concert of seasonal choral music at St. Michael and All Angels Church, Martlesham Heath, on December 9th at 7:30pm. Gippeswyk Singers invite you to join them for an evening of uplifting music to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season. The programme will include a varied selection of carols and Bob Chilcott's 'On Christmas Night',

accompanied by Sabine Sutton. The Gippeswyk Conductor (Janette Ruocco) has selected a diverse range of rarely performed Christmas pieces from the 7th century to the present day which the choir is very much looking forward to performing. 'On Christmas Night' is a musical celebration of the Christmas story, presented as a sequence of eight original carols. Chilcott has adapted the familiar melodies to produce an impressive range of styles and

moods ranging from comforting and reflective to jubilant, swinging and folksy. Audience members will also get the chance to join with the choir in some more traditional carols. The choir invites you to join them for refreshments at the end of the concert. Tickets are £10 in advance or £12 on the door and are available from: www.ticketsource. co.uk/gippeswyk-singers or by phoning: 01473 620353.

Look at our giant pumpkin!

Performing nursery rhymes

What's been happening at Ringsfield, Brampton and Bramfield Schools? This month at Bramfield, we have been busy harvesting all our fruits and vegetables. Throughout the year our 'Guardians of the Garden' put lots of time and effort into weeding, planting and watering a whole host of crops for the school and local community to enjoy. Some of the vegetables are used in the school kitchen, and any left-over produce is offered to families to make use of at home. The children in reception have been foraging for blackberries and picking apples in our orchard. We used our blackberries to make tasty blackberry ice cream and the apples we turned into a delicious apple crumble. Our prize crop though was an enormous pumpkin, which weighed more

than the children! We have used this to inspire some of our own story telling, based on Cinderella and her pumpkin carriage, which has really captured the children's imaginations. The children at Brampton have settled into school life fantastically and have made some lovely friendships. They have been busy learning nursery rhymes and decided that they wanted to put on a show for their friends and teachers. They set up a seating area using the crates in our outside area. Next, they made tickets adding numbers on to show the cost, Mrs. Bedwell found them a stamp so that one of them could be the ticket stamper! Once all the tickets were stamped, they sat down to watch their

friends perform. The children took it in turns to be the audience and the performer and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They are definitely natural performers! At Ringsfield, we have been celebrating harvest and the whole school went to the church for a special service. Every class performed a song or poem for the parents and were encouraged to bring food to donate to the Waveney Foodbank. The generosity was amazing! The Nursery also had their own harvest celebration at school with parents. There were lots of exciting harvest activities, including making autumn leaf wreaths, exploring farming through sensory small world play and performing autumn songs.

The children also donated some food for the foodbank. If you are looking for a Nursery place for your child, we accept children with a 30 hour code. We also have an afternoon sessions for two year olds and accept golden tickets. If you'd like to come and view our Nursery setting, please call 01502 713030 or email: office.ringsfield@ greatwoodsprimary.org

Common Ground Theatre Company

Miss Mimple takes on the Ice Wolf in this year's hilarious Christmas comedy mystery! 198945

Common Ground are touring the region once again this Christmas and New Year, with another of their hilarious genrespoof panto alternatives. This year, they are mashing up amateur sleuthing, gangsters and werewolves. Renowned amateur sleuth and part-time dog trainer Miss. Jean Mimple takes a hiking tour of the Italian alps. In a remote hostelry, she meets Dr. Bridges, assistant to the mysterious Professor Ramekin, who lives in nearby Castle Pandoro. One of the servants at the castle has been found torn into fettuccine. So, ignoring the locals' warnings of "The Ice Wolf", or "Bestia Gelato" (half man, half wolf, half frozen dessert) which has terrorised the region for several months, the plucky Miss Mimple sets off to investigate. Audience members said of last year's show 'A Murder at St. Muttley's': "What a fabulous, funny show!" "A brilliant and entertaining evening" "Brilliant script and impeccable timing" "The mad cap style is an absolute winner! The schtick and 'business' actually gave me belly laughs, and I'm old enough to know better!" Common Ground has been touring East Anglia for the last 16 years, building up a loyal following for their "wonderfully whacky... terrifically original" (Libby Purves) style of music theatre. They've been doing a grand job of keeping small-scale theatre alive and well in East Anglia, presenting shows that are

entertaining, first and foremost. The genre spoof Christmas shows they produce each year have become the go-to alternative to panto, described by Andrew Clarke in the EADT as: "A glorious piece of Christmas fun." Directors Pat Whymark and Julian Harries cut their teeth creating many Christmas productions for Eastern Angles Theatre Co. They were the creative team behind 'Stoat Hall', 'The Mystery

of St. Finnigan's Elbow' and many more, and it's that sense of playfulness that runs through all their work. As an actor, Julian will soon be seen on TV in the major new Sky historical drama 'Mary & George' (starring Julianne Moore) and in the next series of Father Brown (playing a mad novelist). He has performed with The Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal National Theatre and in the West End.

The tour takes in: • Harkstead: Dec 13th. • Woodbridge: Dec 15th-16th. • Laxfield: Dec 19th. • Stowmarket: Dec 20th-23rd. • Felixstowe: Dec 27th-29th. • Gt. The first league match of the winter season saw Beccles B take on UEA B at Easton College. The game was played indoors despite the unseasonably warm weather. Our first mixed team played an extremely competitive two sets which included a long tie break and lots of games going to deuce but they were unable to claim a set, losing 2-0. The second mixed team fared better, drawing 1-1 in a much closer encounter. In the men's and ladies' doubles, the UEA side, some of whom had played at national level, really showed their class

Loddon Community Gym Loddon Community Gym members took part in a fundraising Cyclathon on September 10th. 21 people completed the 12 hour event, consisting of 72 ten minute stints on a static exercise bike. Between them, the members notched up an impressive 239.35 miles and raised almost £900 for much needed funds. A competition on the day to guess how many miles would be cycled was also held, the winner guessing 240 miles! The event was kindly sponsored by the local Co-op who donated a food hamper and space in front of their store, and by both Loddon Town Council and Chedgrave Parish Council who loaned essential equipment

This summary is compiled from the records of Stephen Bartholomew of Beccles. September 2023 • Maximum temp: 31.3C (88F) on the 9th, compared with 27.5C (81F) in September 2022. • Minimum temp: 9.5C (49F) on the 22nd and the 29th, compared with 3.8C (38F) in September 2022. • Average maximum temp: 22.77C (73F) in 2023. 20.00C (68F) in 2022. 19.49C (67F) on average. • Average minimum temp: 13.37C (56F) in 2023. 11.02C (51F) in 2022. 10.75C (51F) on average. • Mean temp: 18.07C (64F) in 2023. 15.51C (59F) in 2022. 15.12C (59F) on average. • Rainfall total: 2.62" compared with 2.48" in September 2022. (30-year average 1.99"). 2023 total is 132% of the average. • Most rainfall on one day: 1.30" on the 12th. • Wind direction (mainly from): South-west 9 days, south-east 7 days, east 4 days, south 4 days 191900

and west 4 days. September 2023 was considerably warmer and somewhat wetter than the longterm average. Where do I start? September was not only narrowly the 2nd warmest on entire record (just 0.1C less than 2006), but also the warmest month of 2023, which is unique on my record. Following the unsettled end to August, high pressure became established, drawing in warm continental air to create a truly remarkable early month heat wave. This included 2 of just 3 September days to exceed 30C on my record, 31.3C on the 9th and 30.5C on the 10th. These days were also the 2 warmest days of 2023. 8 successive days (the 4th to 11th) recorded a daytime maximum of 25.0C or better, although 2006 also achieved 8 days that hit 25C plus, only 4 of these were consecutive. This was part of excellent run of maximums which saw at least 20C noted on every day up to and including the 20th. There were 24 such days in total (there were 28 days of 20C or above in 2006). Understandably, levels tailed-

off slightly towards the end of the month but only the 21st (with a maximum of 16.3C) was the only day somewhat less than the long term average. Even that day was the highest "lowest maximum" for the month since 2016. Warm nights were also a feature with as many as 12 nights recording a minimum of 14.0C or above. The best of which (18.4C on the 10th) was not only the 2nd warmest September night on my record, just short of 19.0C (08/09/2016) but it also was the warmest night of 2023 (18.2C was August's best, 18.0C was July's best). Only 2 nights did minimums fall below 10C, 9.5C on the 22nd and the 29th. Even then, another precedent was established. Being the highest "lowest minimums" of any September month, previous best being 9.0C on September 10th, 2006. Despite all these records being broken or equalled, the influence from the Atlantic made an impression as the "High" broke down and at times later during the month. The early month heat wave was broken on the 12th with an intense rainfall which lasted a number of

hours and eventually amounted to 1.30 inches. Not only did this amount to half of the September rainfall total, but was also the 2nd wettest day of the year so far (exceeded only by 1.85 inches on July 4th). Although there were only 9 rainy days during the month, in addition to the wettest day, there were 4 others which recorded one-fifth-of-an-inch or more and included 0.40 inches on each of the 17th and 20th. The 2.62 inch total made this the 2nd wetter-than-average September, also the 4th during the last 5 years. However, besides the 10 day dry spell (from the 2nd to the 11th), 3 and 4 day rain-less spells were noted on the 14th to the 16th and the 22nd to the 26th inclusive. Three quarters of 2023 has been completed and 21.63" of rainfall has been recorded so far. We are well on course to overachieve on the long-term average (25.60" being the year's average). Traditionally, October, November and December are the 3 wettest (or wetter) months of the year. We have now had 6 out of the 9 months so far with rainfall above (or somewhat above) average. This is a stark comparison with the same point of 2022, when only 10.88" had been recorded and September had only been the 2nd wetter-than-average month following a particularly arid Summer season.
