2 - April 2022 - Beccles & Bungay Community News

News from St Mary's Church, Bungay The Friends of St. Mary's are looking forward to the church being used to its full potential this year, after two years of Covid cancellations. However, the barren time of non-events was put to good use by extensive work done on the tower flint-work and the priory ruins being made safe for visitors. There are several proposed and unconfirmed bookings in hand, but the following are well under way: Starting on Thurs 17th February, there'll be a series of nine lunchtime concerts stages by William Drew Batty, who in the autumn of last year presented a similar varied programme which was received with great pleasure by the town. At the end of April and into May, preceding the Platinum Jubilee celebration, there are plans for an exhibition entitled "Happy and Glorious - 70 years a Queen, 70 years of change in Bungay".

Leiston Works Railway Trust model railway show The Leiston Works Railway (LWR) are delighted to announce their second Model Railway Show. Once again, the event is taking place at the Sizewell Sports and Social Club in Leiston on Saturday 9th April 2022. The show will be in the main hall of the venue and will be open from 10am-4pm. In the hall, there will be a selection of various gauge model railway layouts from different eras of railway history. The LWR will also take the opportunity to bring everyone up to date, with an exhibition showing the progress that has been made so far with the project. Also available, to help with LWR funds, will be railway books and magazines to purchase at reasonable prices. The Mid Suffolk Light Railway and the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway Society will also be bringing their stands to show their latest progress. A new edition to the Model Railway Show, and especially for the young ones to enjoy, will be an early 'Playmobil' Railway Layout from the 1980's, complimented by Playmobil accessories. This will be available (under the supervision of adults) for the children to take part at controlling the trains on the layout. Weather permitting, the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway Society will also

be bringing their outdoor narrow gauge steam railway. The LWR Model Railway Show in October 2021 was very popular by members of the public who visited and the exhibitors alike, so the LWR have decided to hold this second event. The Sizewell Club will have food and beverages available to purchase throughout the day during the model railway show. Admission to the show is £3 per adult, with children under the age of 16 getting in for free. Free parking is available at the venue. The address of the Sizewell Sports and Social Club is: King Georges Avenue, Leiston, Suffolk, IP16 4JX. For more details about the show, please contact 07769 906035. You can also follow the progress of the LWR on the Facebook page. The Leiston Works Railway look forward to seeing you there! Please note: The LWR cannot be held responsible for the unavailability of any model railway exhibit. Do you own a model railway that you have been painstakingly building? Have you ever considered showing it at a model railway show? If so, the Leiston Works Railway would like to hear from you so that they can get in touch for future model railway shows. Please contact the LWR on the telephone number above.

and professional bodies representing agents. The group aims to improve the provision of material information in property listings, and part of this process involves creating a framework of information disclosure to help agents, software providers and property portals to comply with the legal requirements of the CPRs. Three stages of material information disclosure: Part A: Information that, regardless of outcome, is always considered material for all properties regardless of location. This information generally involves unavoidable costs that will be incurred by the occupier regardless of the use of the property. Part B: Information that must be established for all properties. It applies mainly to utilities (and similar), where non-standard features would affect someone's decision to look any further at that property. Part C: Additional material information that may or may not need to be established, depending on whether the property is affected or impacted by the information. Applies to properties affected by the issue itself because of, for example, the location of the property. Current status: Part A is now underway. The relevant data fields will start to

appear on portals from February 2022. By the end of May 2022, this information will be required as standard on all property listings. From then, if an agent leaves a field empty, this will be flagged on the listing and will link to advice for consumers on why that information is important and how it may be obtained. The list of material information for Parts B and C is being developed in conjunction with industry partners and full guidance will be available in due course, for all parts. National Trading Standards wants all material information to be mandatory on property listings once all three phases of the project are complete. At that stage, agents will need to include all the required information before it is listed on a property portal. The Government has reiterated the importance of this project in its recent White Paper, Levelling Up the United Kingdom and signalled that legislation may follow. Part A material information: 1. Tenure (applicable to sales listings only) If freehold: • Disclose as 'freehold'. If leasehold:

• Disclose as 'leasehold', and • Current ground rent and any review period • Current service charge information and any review period • Length of lease • If shared ownership, disclose • Details of share being sold, and any additional liabilities or obligations • If commonhold, disclose • Details of rights and obligations that apply between the unit holders, and between the unit holders and the commonhold association 2. Council tax (England, Wales & Scotland), or rates (Northern Ireland) - disclose • Council tax band (E,W&S) • Rates payable (NI) 3. Price or rent For lettings, disclose • The monthly rent, and • Any deposit payable For sales, disclose • The price expressed as a single amount (Note: Displaying the selling price, although not prescribed by law, is considered to be material information - its omission would be a breach of the CPRs if it affected the transactional decision of the average consumer.)

At Flick & Son, we pride ourselves on ensuring we are upto-date with the latest legislations and regulations to give our clients the best possible service and peace of mind. In February, National Trading Standards released a three-stage project to improve the disclosure of material information in property listings. Flick & Son fully support the development of this project and are pleased to say we will be enforcing these guidelines immediately to ensure we are fully compliant by the time regulations are enforced officially at the end of May 2022. Overview: For many years, the regulation of property advertisements was controlled by the Property Misdescriptions Act 1991 (PMA). The PMA was repealed in 2013 on the basis that the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (CPRs) provided similar protection for consumers in their dealings with property agents. Further information on how the CPRs apply to property sales and lettings can be found in the National Trading Standards 'Guidance on Property Sales and Lettings'. To support businesses in the advertising and marketing of property, the National Trading Standards Estate & Letting Agency Team established a steering group made up of various industry stakeholders - redress schemes, property portals, government,

about what your pet can manage. A walk to the first lamppost and back two or three times a day may not seem like a lot but it is very beneficial to your old pets mental and physical well-being. Cats that can’t jump so well will welcome strategically placed chairs or stools so that they don’t have to make the jump on or off their favourite sleeping place in one go. Some may also appreciate a litter tray indoors, and remember to keep an eye on their claws, which may need more frequent trimming. Older dogs and cats, like older people, lose confidence. Shiny laminate floors can be a worrying challenge for an older pet anxious about pulling on a stiff joint. Putting down nonslip matting will make a real difference to them. Going downstairs is hard for dogs, especially if they can’t see well so make sure your stairs are well lit. Tooth problems are common

FCS EQUESTRIAN & PET SUPPLIES

and often overlooked. Pets with tooth ache do not stop eating but they do stop enjoying life, sit quietly, play less and become more irritable. A dental procedure to remove infected teeth, carried out under a carefully monitored anaesthetic is a small risk to undertake to ensure your pet’s mouth is comfortable and pain free. Owners often remark afterwards that their pet is a lot more active and engaged. Finally, don’t ignore problems in your older pet just because you think nothing can be done or because you think your vet will recommend that you have your pet put to sleep. The earlier you get some advice on lumps, bad breath, puddling or excessive thirst, the more options you will have. And remember too, that you don’t have to treat every problem. As long as your pet has an acceptable quality of life then you can decide, with your vet, whether to treat them or not.

Is your older dog or cat less active? Stiff? Losing weight or having accidents? People often put slowness or lack of activity down to age itself, unaware that their beloved pet is putting up with chronic pain and other problems, many of which are easily treated. I understand that a lot of people are reluctant to take their older pet to the vet, perhaps concerned about the consequences of admitting that their pet is in pain. We all have aches and pains from time to time and older pets, like older relatives, will suffer more. But that does not mean that their quality of life is unacceptable. Anti-inflammatories and other joint supplements will often allow them to play like they used to and give them a new lease of life. Consider getting a raised bed or bean bag to sleep on to relieve pressure on old joints. Keep up with their exercise but be realistic

Beccles Antiques Street Market

Charity recital at St. Mary's Church, Bungay

The Beccles Antiques Market will be back for at the Beccles Quay for its first market of the year on Sunday 1st May (the second market being on 21st August). There will be the usual amount of great professional dealers, approximately 100 in total selling a good selection of antiques, retro and collectables, including furniture, glass, silver, postcards, pictures, clothing, jewellery etc, plus a food village, serving hot

World-renowned concert pianist Roman Rudnytsky will be in Bungay next month to give a recital at St. Mary's Church. The pianist Roman Rudnytsky (born in America of Ukrainian parents) is taking time out from a busy world-wide schedule to visit Bungay on Saturday 23rd April. While the concert was planned as a fundraiser for Holy Trinity Church, in view of the situation in Ukraine, a donation to the Ukrainian appeal will be made from the proceeds. Mr Rudnytsky is giving a recital this weekend (in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) in aid of the US appeal for Ukraine. In early April, he will be giving recitals on the cruise ship Aurora before coming to the UK. Trinity churchwarden Terry Reeve said: "Roman has told me he is appalled and upset about the situation in his parents' homeland, and strongly condemns it. He speaks the Ukrainian language. He's so pleased that virtually the whole world is behind Ukraine and supporting her and her proud people, who have their own language and culture, and prize their independence which they voted for since 1991."

and cold food, with plenty of open space to sit and eat. It's free entry and as well as the pay and display car park, there will be some additional parking available at the Quay market site for a small charge of £2 as well as all the car parks in Beccles town centre just a short walk away. Sat nav NR34 9BB. All enquiries, call: 01502 711174. You can follow the market on Facebook @antiquesmarketbeccles for all updates and information.

Did you know you can advertise in our online business directory from just £40+vat per year?

Mr Reeve said in view of this the church felt it right to make a donation form the concert proceeds to the Ukrainian appeal. The hour-long concert will be at 3pm, and will feature works by Chopin, Schuman, Goodchild and Benjamin Britten, and will also include Rudnytsky's own transcription for solo piano of Grieg's concerto in A minor. Following his Bungay date, the pianist will join the Queen Mary 2 at Southampton, to give recitals during her cruise. Tickets for the concert are £12, and are available at Wightman's of Bungay, by ringing 01986 896416, or emailing: terry. reeve19@btinternet.com. It is also possible to pay online following a call or email.

That’s less than 77p+vat per week!

Our much-loved church is being given a new lease of life. The roof and tower are being repaired. Our wonderful builders have been working through the ever-changing weather to ensure that we are on schedule. This could not have happened without the support of the local community and the generosity of grant funding. We are grateful to all those who have supported us, whether through donations or attending one of our events - the most recent being our 'Great Big Film and Music Sale' held in Wortwell Core last Summer. We're thankful for those funders who have made this possible, with our largest contribution coming from the Heritage Stimulus Fund, part of the Government's Culture Recovery. It's administered by Historic England. Claire Walker (CEO National Churches Trust) said: "The funding is a vote of confidence in the future of historic church buildings and a recognition of their importance to society."

We're thankful to the National Churches Trust who put us forward for the Heritage Stimulus Fund and awarded us funding through their Cornerstone grant and Wolfson Fabric Repair grant. We have also received help from Suffolk Historic Churches, AllChurches Trust and Homersfield Community Project. The work should be completed by the end of May and we're busy planning celebration events. Our first one is going to be on Friday May 6th, starting at 7:30pm. Joe Edwards-Gill (a local metal detectorist) is going to talk about the treasures he has found, along with a slide show and a 'finds' table. Wine/tea and cake will be provided. If you'd like to book your place (suggested donation £10 per person), please phone Lucy on 01986 788600 or email: lucyhammond600@gmail.com. The day before the scaffolding was erected, the congregation raised a coffee cup to celebrate our wonderful little church being safe and sound once more.

Linocuts created at recent Wednesday evening workshop

An update from Woodbridge Art Club Members of Woodbridge Art Club have been enjoying their Wednesday evening Club nights again at the Clubhouse. In recent weeks we have had a fascinating talk from Claudia Myatt about her Artist's Residency on HMS Protector in Antarctica, life drawing, an excellent workshop on lino-cutting by talented member Sandy, and a demonstration of working in coloured pencils by Roy. We enjoy meeting together at

the studio throughout the week. Whilst we work alongside each other on our own projects for much of this time, on alternative Friday mornings for the painters amongst us there is usually some informal teaching or an opportunity to try a particular subject or technique. Recently we have looked at different ways of using acrylics and how to draw boats effectively. There is always something new to try and people to encourage you and

make friends with along the way. The Club will be opening their Exhibition over the Easter Weekend beginning on Good Friday 15th April. Potters, Painters, Photographers and lace-makers will be displaying their latest work for sale. We hope to welcome you at the club. After the Easter weekend the Exhibition will continue every weekend and Bank Holiday throughout the Summer! Hours are 10am-5pm.

hate incidents all those perceived by the person reporting them to be motivated by hostility, including unfriendliness or dislike. This recent Court of Appeal judgment should be welcomed and has implications for freedom of speech which go way beyond policing: it rightly observes "how quickly some involved in the transgender debate are prepared to accuse others with whom they disagree of showing hatred, or as being transphobic when they are not". We see this intolerance of different views everywhere: from Harry Potter actors condemning JK Rowling for her "hateful" views, to broadcasters or university students saying speakers should be "cancelled" for stating that biological sex is immutable. There is no democracy without freedom of expression. In a world where it is possible to take offence at almost anything and everything, the police acting unlawfully to shut down legitimate political debate in 21stcentury Britain should remind us that the most basic human rights should never be taken for granted.

Would you like to receive our activity sheets for pre-schoolaged children? Bright Stars normally runs free, fun activity sessions for pre-school-aged children with their parents, grandparents, friends, family/ carers at St Michael's Church Centre, Martlesham Heath, on the 2nd and 4th Monday mornings of each month during term-time. They usually involve singing, games, making crafts to take home and telling stories from the Bible. Unfortunately, we're not meeting in person at present due to the pandemic. Instead, we're sending out activity sheets by email/post for the children to enjoy doing with their loved ones. A recent theme was the parable of the lost coin, which included

a story to read and a song to sing. There was also a game to colour and play, hiding the coin and seeing how quickly it could be found! If you have or look after a child/children of pre-school age and would like to receive our sheets, please give us a call on the telephone number below. We look forward to hearing from you! Since 2012, Love to Sing Community Choir Leiston and Woodbridge have been performing, raising money for charity, and entertaining audiences from Chapel St. Mary to Blythburgh and nearly every church or community hall in between! We attract enthusiastic voices looking for a structured, quality choir with a broad repertoire and desire to support the community. The choir boasts very strong tenor and bass sections, which is something to be envied in the world of community choirs! Not to mention a soaring soprano section and alto's that just constantly deliver! The

our views may be, we must have the right to freely express them. The origin of police recording of non-crime hate incidents was well intentioned and came from the report into Stephen Lawrence's murder in 1993, which found institutional racism in the Metropolitan Police. As a result, racist incidents were defined as anything "perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person" and that non-crime incidents should be reported, recorded and investigated with the same commitment as real crimes. But College of Policing guidance has since expanded to cover a number of other "protected characteristics" including gender. Some police forces have even developed a track record for misinterpreting the law. For example, last February, Merseyside Police claimed that "being offensive is an offence". In a world where the police don't have the resources to investigate non-crime incidents, partly because of the volume of reports generated by social media, the College of Policing tells police officers to record as

A man is contacted by the police and informed that he's done nothing criminal but his social media posts have offended someone. The police record his social media comments as a noncrime hate incident which may show up on his criminal record checks and affect his future employment. This may sound like something from Communist Russia, but this really happened in Britain only three years ago. In a recent historic judgment, the Court of Appeal ruled that the College of Policing's guidance requiring non-crime hate incidents to be officially recorded by the police was an unlawful incursion to our freedom of expression. As the trial judge noted, the man's tweets were "for the most part, either opaque, profane or unsophisticated", but this should not justify silencing his right to contribute to contentious political debates. The debate in question related to the relative importance of biological sex and self-declared gender identity in relation to single-sex spaces and sport. For some, this is an area of great contention, but whatever

This year is the centenary of the death of Ernest Shackleton, the leader of the last great expedition of the heroic age of polar exploration. He's the subject of an exhibition in London and the documentary film of the 1914-16 expedition has been re-mastered for public showing. On Thursday 7th April at Woodbridge Library (7pm for 7:30pm start), John Whitehead will talk about Shackleton's attempt to reach the South Pole. The bare bones of the story are well known: The expedition's ship 'The Endurance' trapped and eventually crushed by pack ice, the 750 mile journey across the polar sea to South Georgia to raise the alarm, the eventual rescue of the entire crew. Our speaker will take us on the journey from the West India Docks in London in

Guiding momentum is increasing faster every day with the Rainbows, Brownie and Guides able to do even more than ever. We're also thankful for the ongoing easement of Covid restrictions. Our units are thriving, all are meeting face-toface, we have welcomed new Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and recently, ten Brownies have made their Brownie promise. The opportunity is here, come and join us. Our programme is packed full of adventure and variety. We have a huge range of activities to try, plenty of badges to earn and loads of ways to develop new skills, there something for everyone. Guiding challenges us all to be the best we can be. Leiston Rainbows and 1st Leiston Brownies have been celebrating Chinese New Year and Knodishall Brownies International Pizza Day. The environment is of concern to our 2nd Leiston Brownies. They're looking at minimising waste and plastic pollution as part of their zero-waste badge. How often do we throw things away when they can be reused? I hear that the brownies are re-purposing glass bottles into vases to give as gifts. We challenge you to make a new outfit from clothes you've not worn for a long time, you'll be surprised at the result. With the opening up of travel, 1st Leiston Brownies are working on their aviation badge, making planes, learning about what can fly and of course not forgetting how map grid references work.

Financial focus on... Dying Intestate Over half of adults in the UK do not have a valid Will. This means that when they die, their assets are distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules which can cause all manner of problems if assets are sent to undeserving members of a family or (for example) a substantial inheritance is left to teenage adults without any control. Assuming you live in England or Wales, if you die Intestate, the rules are: • Married/civil partnership with no children - your spouse receives everything. • Married/civil partnership with children - your spouse receives your personal assets and the first £270,000 in value. The remainder is split equally between your spouse and your children (including illegitimate and adopted but not stepchildren). It becomes more complicated if you are neither married or in a civil partnership. Now, in order of set off, your assets go absolutely to your children and then to your living parents, before your siblings are considered as beneficiaries. If the assets still cannot be distributed, the rules then send your assets to your living grandparents and then to your aunts and uncles. If either your children, siblings or aunts and uncles have already died but have themselves left beneficiaries, those beneficiaries can stand in their stead. Ultimately, if no beneficiaries can be found, your estate goes to the Crown. If your assets to pass to a minor, the government will hold them in trust until they reach age

18 whereupon their inheritance is released to them without any controls, whether or not they are financially mature enough to handle the responsibility. Even without considering whether any Inheritance Tax or Trust planning might be useful, a simple Will can prevent your assets going to places that they ought not to. With modern lives being a lot more complicated than the simple old-fashioned family unit, having a Will has never been more important and can save so many problems. For preparation of a Will, whilst you do not legally require one, it is recommended that you should speak to a suitably qualified solicitor or Will preparer. For inheritance tax advice, you should speak to a suitably qualified tax professional. Hope this helps! For further information, please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) on: robin.beadle@ensors.co.uk. Local children raise money for Guide Dog Association Harleston Church of England Primary Academy (part of the Diocese of Norwich St. Benet's Academy Trust) has been overwhelmed with the response to raising money for the Guide Dog Association after a talk to the children about what it is like to be blind. The fundraising (which raised a staggering £2,025) came about after a visit to the school by grandma Fiona McGregor, who's registered blind, and her guide dog, Winnie. Fiona from Harleston (who has a grandson at the school) shared her story with the children about how she lost her sight fifteen years ago and how lucky she feels to have Winnie the guide dog to be her eyes. Fiona said: "I'd like to say a massive thank you to the children, parents and staff for fundraising such a wonderful amount, for Richard and Jill Bussien, Guide Dogs Harleston and Dis fundraising group. I loved my visit to Harleston Primary School to share my experiences with my eyesight loss. I'm totally overwhelmed with the amount the children have raised. This will go a long way in a guide dogs' life and help someone like me in their journey." Teacher, Mrs Ingram said: "The year one and nursery children joined the class in the hall to learn about her story and they were so inspired they wanted to do something. The children and parents of the reception and year one children took the time to decorate the children's bikes and scooters and then very kindly donated over £2,000! The children displayed enormous

Picture submitted by St Benet's MAT stamina and proudly rode their bikes, completing laps of the playground." One of the reception children, Isaac said: "I have some pocket money and I am going to give this to help pay for a new guide dog." Teacher, Mrs Bev Beaumont said: "We are very proud of our children coming up with the idea and taking the initiative to raise the funds for an important cause. We are truly overwhelmed by the generosity of our families across early years and year one. It's truly remarkable and so wonderful that we all came together for such a worthy cause and raised so much money and had great fun at the same time! May we take this opportunity to thank our families for their most generous donations and for helping others in our community. We are hoping to sponsor a guide dog with this money and will feel a sense of pride knowing that we have managed to help others."

The peace that we feel within ourselves radiates outwards, attracting new opportunities and connections into our lives. New doors begin to open. Synchronistic events increase. We also begin to trust our intuition and to make choices that better support our health and our wellbeing. Festival organiser Chris Cozens (pictured), explains the inspiration behind the Life Arts Mind, Body & Spirit Festivals: "As our lives have become increasingly busy, and pressurised, we all need to find new ways to decompress and to unwind. We offer people the space and time to relax and find peace within their busy and

An update from Woodbridge Inner Wheel "There, but for the Grace of God"... is something one tends to say when considering someone in a less fortunate situation to oneself. How easy it is to overlook the pain and suffering that can be caused by one wrong decision, one tragic event that causes a person's life to spin out of control. Gill Dean (Director of the Hope Centre based in Witnesham) gave a moving account to IW members of the love and care provided by Talitha Koum (a local Christian charity) to women who have become vulnerable as a result of tragic life events. Women with a range of personal troubles are provided in the centre with a bedroom and en suite, but they also receive care and rest, kindness, and practical help, for example, with counselling in debt, abuse, and dependency. Women are also encouraged into education or training opportunities. There's a lawn, an orchard and a vegetable garden, that provide an open space that allows people to come together

Give croquet a try? Come to the open day Many of the Thorpeness Croquet Club members have been playing right through the winter but the 2022 season really gets under way after the AGM on 11th March. Club afternoons will be on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 2pm. There's an open day on Sat 16th April from mid-day through the afternoon to give anyone interested in trying out the game. Just turn up in flat soled shoes. We have plenty of mallets to choose from. There will be instruction for those new to the game. and to produce food which they cook for personal and communal meals. The centre is supported by prayer, and receives funding from various sources including grants and donations from the local community and church groups. There were seven bedrooms, and now there are eleven rooms with plans in place for further expansion, and also for diversification into social enterprise. June Kenyon summed up how members were feeling in her vote of thanks when she expressed admiration for the dedication and care of the charity. Each woman housed by the centre receives unique care and is rarely "moved on" until she is ready to leave. Talitha Koum means "Little Girl, Get up". Certainly, the love given by the Hope Centre should enable each person in its care to take up again their life in a meaningful and fulfilling way. For more information visit: www.talithakoum.org.uk. Mary Walker invited members

to spend a few moments in silence to think of the people of Ukraine. Donations of toiletries, baby and personal care, blankets, sleeping bags, clothing etc were brought to be taken to collection points for onward transmission. Club Treasurer Deirdre Griffin has been walking regularly almost every day to reach 250 miles for the Stroke Association, and members, whilst sponsoring Deirdre, are also looking forward to joining her for the last few miles, ending up for lunch in a local hostelry. There may be more for lunch than for walking, but it is all about the fun and friendship! Inner Wheel has three key objectives: To promote true friendship: To encourage the ideals of personal service: and: To foster international understanding. Any woman who shares the three central aims of IIW can join the organisation. If you'd like to know more about Woodbridge Inner Wheel, please do look at our website: www.woodbridgeinnerwheel.org.uk

Beccles & Bungay Community News - April 2022 - 15 177035

Beccles weather report February 2022 and Winter

accumulated to just over half an inch. The following 6 days saw high pressure build temporarily to give the most settled and pleasant period of the month. The early blooming of Spring plants (in what was the last Winter month) has not only been promoted by the regular rainfall amounts but also just how mild this month was. Thanks to the almost total dominance of South to West winds driven on by a powerful jet stream. This was the 4th successive milder than average Feb running. The average maximum temp exceeded 10C (3C above the long-term average) and ranks as 5th mildest Feb of the 8 on my 54 year record have done so. It was only the mildest for month since 2019, but that was only because that Feb was the top performer on entire record. This time, 18 of the 28 days achieved daytime maximum of 10C and above. In addition, there were no really cold days for this time of the year, the lowest maximum of 6.6C on the 4th had only been bettered on 3 other instances in Febs of 2014 (6.8C), 2000 (7.5C) and 1990 (7.2C). Although slightly less impressive, average minimum temp exceeded the long-term average by over 1.5C. This was the 1st Feb on my record to escape air frost altogether. There were 4 nights within half a degree Celsius above freezing but the coldest recorded +0.3C air minimum on the 10th and 26th. Just 1 air frost had been noted in the Febs of 2020, 2017, 2014 and 2011. Winter 2021/2022 (Dec, Jan and Feb) Average maximum temp: 9.1C (1.6C above 1981-2010 average). Average minimum temp: 2.9C (0.7C above 1981-2010 average). Mean temp: 6.0C (1.15C above 1981-2010 average). Rainfall total: 6.43" (101% of average). It was a milder than average Winter, however only the mildest since 2019/2020 and before that 2015/2016. Dec and Feb were milder than the long-term mean by 1C and 2.5C respectively,

while Jan achieved average and was the coolest of the 3 months. Absolute maximum temperature in each month were outstanding. The 15.5C Dec maximum equalled the previous mildest Dec days in 1971,1974,1977 and 1979. The 14.5C Jan maximum was within 0.5C of the highest reading for the month recorded in 2015 and 2008 (15.0C). While Feb's high of 15.5C was some way short of the all-time best (19.0C noted in 2019). It was still a really acceptable maximum at this time of the year. Just 7 air frosts were noted during the 3 Winter months which equalled the seven noted in Winters of 2019/2020 and 2013/2014. The least number of air frosts for the season occurred in 1988/1989 when only 6

occurred and included one of only 2 air frost free Decs on my entire record. Rainfall for Winter months 2021/2022 was average despite a 3rd more than average being recorded both in Dec on 24 rain days and Feb on 20 rain days. A very dry Jan with only 0.84", one of the driest on entire record thanks to domination of high pressure during that month. Contrast that with the windy week commencing 16th Feb which included the 3 named storms perhaps the outstanding memory of this season.

This summary is compiled from the records of Stephen Bartholomew of Beccles. February 2022 Max temp: 15.5C (59F) on the 16th, compared with 15.0C (59F) in Feb, 2021. Min temp: +0.3C (32F) on the 10th and 26th, compared with -3.6C (26F) in Feb, 2021. Average maximum temp: 10.62C (51F) in 2022. 8.38C (47F) in 2021. 7.50C (45F) on average. Average minimum temp: 3.52C (38F) in 2022. 2.17C (38F) in 2021. 1.90C (35F) on average. Mean temp: 7.07C (44F) in 2022. 5.28C (41F) in 2021. 4.70C (40F) on average. Air frosts: Nil compared with 11 in Feb, 2021. Rainfall total: 2.52", compared with 2.28" in Feb, 2021. (30-year average (1981-2010) 1.84"). The 2022 total was 137% of the average. Most rainfall on one day: 0.40" on the 19th. Wind direction, mainly from: South-West 11 days, West 8 days, South 5 days and North-West 4 days. An extraordinary month. It will be mainly remembered for 3 named storms within 1 week commencing 16th Feb with "Dudley", worse still was to follow on 18th with "Eunice" during which a 72mph gust was recorded on the Orwell Bridge. The sequence was completed on the 20th/21st when "Franklin" passed through. These turbulent events and their associated rainfall were part of 12 consecutive rain days (13th-24th) which transformed the month from potentially dry to the 3rd wetter than average Feb running. The eventual 2.52" total gathered over 20 rain days however made this only the wettest Feb since 2020. The only wintry precipitation was observed on the 24th with hail showers and short lived snow pellets which did not lay on the ground. The month had commenced with 6 consecutive rain days of mainly modest totals which had

'A Tranquil Dawn at Orford' by David Penrose

Bungay Camera Club A4 competition report Bungay Camera Club held the first competition of 2022 on the evening of Wednesday 22nd. This was an A4 print competition, consisting of both colour and mono prints of any subject that a club member wishes to enter. In total, there was a strong number of high quality entries with sixteen images for both the colour and the mono categories. Seventeen club members, two guests and the judge Mr David Jordan FRPS turned out for the meeting held at Broome Village Hall. Mr Jordan (from the Norwich and District Photographic Society) has experience of judging various competitions over many years. He's also an assessor of images submitted to the Royal Photographic Society. Mr Jordan kept his comments, while judging the prints, both lively and informative. He expressed his thanks and commented: "I have enjoyed seeing what the members of Bungay Camera Club have asked me to judge. There have been some good examples of camera

craft along with some clean mono image processing." To round off the evening, Mr Jordan gave a brief introduction and display of his images using a pin-hole camera technique and his use of metallic type photo paper to print out his finished image. Top scores of 20/20 went to club members David Penrose, for both of his colour and mono images: 'A Tranquil Dawn at Orford' and 'The Viking'. Andy Wilson's colour image 'The Shard' and Jane Murphy's mono image 'Winter Reeds'. Scores of 19/20 went to club members John Orr's colour image 'Summers Last Sunflower', Richard Roberts' mono image 'Danielle' and Jackie Moore's mono image 'The Glance'. Bungay Camera Club meets every 2nd and 4th Wednesday, 7:30pm at Broome Village Hall. Potential new members will be made very welcome. More information can be found on the Bungay Camera Club website: www.bungaycameraclub.com.

Beccles Townlands Charity dates back to 1544, with a proud history of serving the town and its inhabitants over the almost five centuries of its existence. We're based at Leman House in Ballygate, a sixteenth century Grade 1 listed building which also houses Beccles and District Museum. The funds that we preside over are thanks to legacies from our forebears and judicious investment over the years, overseen by the Charities Commission. We receive requests for assistance from many organisations and individuals during the course of a year and we are particularly keen to support the young, the aged, the disabled and the disadvantaged as well as the organisations that enhance their lives in one way or another. Examples of help given during the 2021 financial year are as follows. The Waveney Centre does sterling work for our senior citizens and has continued to remain open when possible during the two years of Covid. We were pleased to help finance their refurbishment and welfare programmes so they could continue to operate safely and comfortably. To assist the youth of the town we offered much needed financial support to the Beccles Royales Gymnastics Club, a popular, thriving club for those aged between 5 and 18 years. The Sir John Leman School and St. Luke's Church both benefitted from grants for their initiatives for young people. As far as the town itself is concerned, we support the Citizens Advice Bureau on an

annual basis and have assisted the Parish of St Michael's with their Covid response and much needed foodbank. Often individuals, particularly the elderly, find it difficult to travel to an event and BACT Community Transport provides just such a service; This year, we were pleased to help finance an additional minibus so they can continue their good work. The new Beccles Volunteer Centre, a Covid Memorial Service at St Michael's, the resurfacing of the car park at St. Luke's and Beccles Bell Ringers all benefited from financial assistance. Culture and Leisure is also important to the town and we contribute annually to the Beccles and District Museum and in 2021 Beccles Rugby Football Club received a grant towards work on The Hub. In addition to such major projects we are anxious to help individuals in need and in 2021 we provided washing machines to two families and emergency supplies to another. Beccles Townlands Charity (also known as The Feoffees) is non-political, entirely voluntary and exists purely for the welfare of the town and the people who live here. If you or your organisation feel you might qualify for assistance, please visit our website, Beccles Townlands Charity, and complete the application form. We look forward to hearing from you.
