PRAYER GROUP AND BIBLE STUDIES: This recently formed group has now decided to change its meeting time and frequency. It will now meet at 10:30am in the Emmaus Room at the front of the church on ALTERNATE Mondays beginning February 14th then 28th, and then again on March 14th etc .All welcome to come and join us. TABLE FOOTBALL: We have joined a league with other
local Bungay Churches and those in our own Partnership and are meeting regularly to see who can win! Emmanuel has now played Pulham Market Methodist Church twice and we have won both legs 4-2 and 0-11. Our winning team so far is Lisa Doubleday and John Awty. Well done. We're hoping that other couples and other groups might wish to join in the future. Please contact the church. May God bless you and keep you safe in the coming months.
News from St. Mary's Church, Bungay The Friends of St. Mary's are looking forward to the church being used to its full potential this year, after two years of Covid cancellations. However, the barren time of non-events was put to good use by extensive work done on the tower flint-work and the priory ruins being made safe for visitors. There are several proposed and unconfirmed bookings in hand, but the following are well under way: Starting on Thursday 17th February, there will be a series of nine lunchtime concerts stages by William Drew Batty, who in the
autumn of last year presented a similar varied programme which was received with great pleasure by the town. At the end of April and into May, preceding the Platinum Jubilee celebration, there are plans for an exhibition entitled "Happy and Glorious - 70 Years a Queen, 70 years of change in Bungay". Running from April 29th (when the opening speaker will be Sir Laurie Magnus CBE) to the weekend of May 8th, there will be emphasis on any royal connections to Bungay during the
Suffolk
Queen's reign. But, with the help of Bungay Museum, the main content will be pictures and accounts of businesses, buildings, societies, etc which have disappeared or been formed over the past seventy years, plus cameos of local people who have left their mark on the town. Posters and more information will be available nearer the time, but if anyone has a specific enquiry, or some royal memorabilia to lend for the exhibition, please contact 'Wind Swept and Torn' by Peter Nixon either John Warnes on 01986 892855 or Keith Parker on 01986 893133.
Bungay Camera Club returns to live meetings
After almost two years of holding club meetings via the internet and Zoom, Bungay Camera Club is pleased to announce that it will resume live club meetings this month! Throughout the restrictions to group gatherings, the club membership has remained strong and regular presentations, talks and club competitions have ensured that the club has continued to remain active, if somewhat remotely. The start of 2022 has seen some easing of restrictions

on group meetings and so club outings were organised at two local venues, Carlton Marshes and Aldeburgh beach. Both of these were well attended, with club members enjoying meeting and catching up with other members, old and new. After careful consideration and following all the relevant health and safety guidelines, the club committee has taken the decision that live meetings are able to resume. The first club meeting will be a presentation by club member Bob Taylor,
who will be demonstrating how to flush mount images and to present images within a framed mount. This should prove very useful for new members to the club, so that they're able to join in and enter the popular club competitions. The second club meeting on Wednesday 23rd February, will be the first club competition. This competition can be of any topic or subject and will be A4 colour and mono prints. Bungay Camera Club is a friendly, active club and would
be pleased to welcome any potential new members who have interest in developing their photographic skills. The club meets at Broome Village Hall, every 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the month at 7:30pm. The first two meetings attended are free! Expensive equipment is not an essential. All you need is enthusiasm and interest! Contact details for Bungay Camera Club can be found on our website: www.bungaycamera club.co.uk.
come along, you will be made very welcome. Your needs, goals and general fitness will be taken into account and all the exercises will be carefully explained and demonstrated. Some Gym members wear lycra and are very fit indeed but most just wear comfortable clothes, enjoy the company and work as hard as they can on the programme that Louise has designed especially for them. Whatever your age, size, shape or fitness level, there will be someone like you.
If you want to see the Gym in action, please call in when we are open, see for yourself and talk to Louise. The website has lots of information as well: www. loddoncommunitygym.com. The annual fee remains at £20 and there's a cashless payment of £5 per session on arrival. The Gym is open in the Jubilee Hall, George Street, Loddon on Monday afternoons, Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings. You'll find session times on the website when you book.

We are thrilled with all the new equipment that the grant from Norfolk Social Infrastructure Fund enabled us to buy. It shows that they have confidence in the service we provide in this part of South Norfolk. A few weeks ago, I took part in a training session sponsored by South Norfolk Council which was all about how to encourage more people to be active as they get older. Whilst we welcome anyone over the age of sixteen, we accept that the times of our sessions inevitably means many of our members are in the older end of the age spectrum. Apparently, 40% of those aged 55-74 are almost totally inactive

and a whopping 62% of those over 75 are inactive. There's evidence that even just one session of exercise improves sleep, mood and cognition, increases metabolism and offers social interaction. The long term benefits are increased muscle power and strength which reduce the likelihood of strokes, heart disease, diabetes eight different cancers, depression, dementia, osteoporosis and back pain. Regular exercise improves posture, reduces the risk of falls, helps maintain a healthy weight and improves mental health. Most of us know all this but acting on it is hard. The Gym is not for everyone but all I can say is that if you
Beccles RAFA On a cold, bright afternoon in January, the Branch attended St. Peter's Church, Spexhall, Suffolk for the funeral of Wg.Cdr. Ronald Everson OBE AFC RAF (Rtd). Our Standard was Paraded by the Vice-Standard Bearer/ Chairman Mr. Brian Sillick and supported by Branch President Brian Vousden. The Service was given by Revd. Dominic Doble with the Eulogy delivered by Revd. Jane Held. Branch President Brian Vousden commented: "We were honoured and privileged to be asked by the family to attend and show our respect for Wg.Cdr. Ronald, who had such an interesting and rewarding career in the RAF. His example to others and his dedication to duty have been in the highest of traditions and are to be applauded by all." Our thoughts and prayers are now with his family and friends who attended the Church Service in such large numbers. "We will remember him."

Woodbridge Inner Wheel February 2022 meeting
with lunch in Woodbridge. Hats and blankets for premature babies knitted by members had been gratefully received by The Ipswich Hospital, and a number of knitted blankets will be taken to the next Inner Wheel (IW) District meeting for distribution at home and abroad. £190 was raised for Mary's Meals, and that sum will receive matched funding and will be used to provide school essentials for Afghan refugee children arriving in this country. When put together with money raised by IW throughout the UK, the cause should be well supported. Nationally in the UK (in 2021/22) some of the other charities being supported by IW include:The Stroke Association, Riding for the Disabled and Jessie's Fund. Locally, President Sally Pearson's chosen charity is Headway. However, because of the pandemic, like many other clubs, our fundraising and community service activities have been hampered and the club is having to consider the future. It's hoped that pandemic restrictions will ease before too long and the club may go forward with confidence. For more information about IW, go to www.innerwheel. co.uk, and for information on the Woodbridge Club to: www. woodbridgeinnerwheel.org.uk.
News from Woodbridge Riverside Trust Visitor numbers continue to be good, and we're delighted to welcome you all to The Longshed. Stewarded opening times are 11am-3pm on Saturday and Sundays. Entry is free and dogs are welcome. Many of our usual activities have been curtailed through the pandemic, but with the help of Zoom, the Friends of The Longshed were able to get together recently and hear updates from the Trust, and from our sister charity, the Sutton Hoo Ship's Company. The intriguing 'Ship Burial' painting by Robert Mellamphy can now be viewed in the John Gibbins Gallery here in The Longshed, and we're extremely grateful to the Mellamphy family for their generosity in making the painting available for display. The same artist created the bronze 'Ipswich Madonna' which is in Lady Lane, Ipswich. We have a number of exhibitions and talks planned for the spring and summer months,

The talk is entitled 'The Other Burials', and will explore the stories of some of the other burial sites in the vicinity of the famous Ship Burial at Sutton Hoo and surrounding area. The talk will last approximately an hour, followed by tea and cake. Tickets are £5 to include refreshments and they are on sale in our shop which is currently open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 11am3pm. With a greatly reduced number of members able to attend the February meeting, the decision was taken to ask the speaker to postpone her talk until a later date. Members were sorry to hear of the list of illnesses and injuries sustained by members that prevented their attendance. After a tasty meal expertly served by the friendly staff at Ufford Park Hotel, the meeting turned to plans for the future. Many fundraising events have had to be cancelled because of the pandemic, so it was good to make tentative plans for a fashion show to be held in April. More information will be available next month once the finer details of the event are finalised. Plans are also underway for the club to join in with the Woodbridge celebrations for Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Members were pleased to hear that there'd been some new attendees at the January Memory Café. The next Memory Café will take place on the morning of 23rd February, 2022 at Woodbridge FC when a karaoke session is planned. An exciting way to spend a morning! On the club's social side, members are looking forward to a guided walk by President Sally and her husband alongside Martlesham Creek, with a visit to St Mary the Virgin Church, Martlesham and finishing

Our February meeting was an opportunity to get together and talk about, amongst many other things, Parkinson's and the way it was affecting individual lives. This talk allows us to offer each other ideas, facts, support and personal experience to help in the management of this disease on a day-to-day level. Our March meeting will be held on Thursday March 10th when we'll be meeting at Old Hall Farm for coffee and maybe a stroll around the some of the pathways. Do contact us on either of the phone numbers below if you care for or have Parkinson's disease. We're here to offer support and friendship. Home Improvements make sure all work meets current standards. Don't neglect the outside space of your home – it is the first thing anyone sees, and a newly landscaped garden or hardscaped driveway will not only look good and give practical benefits but it also adds value. As with all trades and services you will find a number of related businesses in the pages of the Community
News so give them a call and make an appointment for your local plumber, electrician, builder, decorator, carpenter, gardener and landscaper to come and give you some ideas and a quote for your planned work. Do you some research, get a colour scheme in mind, put together an ideas board and most of all be creative. David Burns, Community News

just about making things look nice. New windows and doors do indeed look good, but they also have an environmental and economic benefit. Again, the latest technology is remarkable, windows and doors are readily available in a whole range of materials and colours. Invite one of the reputable local businesses to come and give you a quote and they will gladly pass on the benefit of their experience and knowledge to help you get the right product. Perhaps you would like to reconfigure the layout of your property to create an open plan living area or make the most of some otherwise unused space. This is where the knowledge and know-how of an experienced builder will be invaluable. Knocking down walls might look fun, but, you need to consider structural integrity, plumbing and electrical connections amongst other things. With the promise of the warmer, brighter sunnier weather soon to come, now is the perfect time to look at home improvements. Whether it is a simple lick of paint to change the colour scheme or more major works such as an extension or new kitchen or bathroom. There is nothing quite like getting hold of your house and moulding it to fit your taste, lifestyle and needs. There is a lot you can do yourself – if you are so inclined, simple jobs like painting and minor improvements such as changing curtains and furnishings. However, these days with busy lives, long working hours and families and friends to see and spend time with, many of us don't have the time, motivation and skills to carry out this work ourselves. Fear not, we are fortunate to have many local businesses on hand to help make our house our dream home. Of course, fashions and trends change regularly so something like a new colour scheme or a change of carpet and flooring can really lift your home and bring it up to date. It is always advisable to use qualified professionals when looking at new flooring – if you pick a quality product and it is well fitted it will comfortably last until you next decide it is time to redecorate. Similarly, new curtains or soft furnishings can add a splash of colour and fresh feel to a room – likewise, go to an experienced professional to get sound advice and excellent service. If you are looking at more major work then you need to speak with experts, after all, even the most enthusiastic DIYer doesn't want to be fitting new windows or building a conservatory. Of course, home improvements are not always

Mother's Day is observed in over forty countries and all have their own way of doing things. Here in the UK, we choose to mark the day by spoiling and treating our mothers. This year the big day is Sunday 27th March (get it in your diaries!). No one knows their mother like you do, so you are best placed to pick the perfect treat or gift. Naturally, there are all sorts of different options and avenues you could go down. Perhaps your mum is a real foodie. In which case, have a look around at the many great pubs and restaurants we have in the area and book a special meal. Be sure to call in advance to avoid disappointment. It has been a particularly testing couple of years, perhaps you have leaned on your mother's shoulder more than

you might usually. Well, why not go a bit further and buy a gift that means something to both of you and that will last forever. Who doesn't love jewellery? Again, you know your mother better than anyone so pick out her favourite stone, colour, style and surprise her with something special. It goes without saying, flowers are always popular and a sure way of putting a smile on someone's face. If you are not going to be able to see your mother this is a gift that can easily be ordered from a local florist and sent direct to your mother home or place of work. You can get some stunning arrangements for less than £20 so it is a superb way of showing you care. Again, if there are particular flowers that have a special meaning then be sure to ask your florist what they can do. If you are looking at
something a little different then why not buy a voucher for a local hair salon or beauty salon? Our mums are hardworking and always on hand to help whenever we need them whether it is emergency child care, dog walking duties or just a shoulder to cry on. How better to show them you care then by buying them a bit of 'me' time – a chance to be pampered and for someone else to look after them for a while. Better still, they can have a pamper session before you take them out for their delicious Mother's Day meal! In short, you can show your mother you love and appreciate her in many different ways. We have lots of great businesses in the area offering anything you can think of so why not get in touch with one of them and make your mum's day!

Update from Dr Dan Poulter MP The construction of Sizewell C will undoubtedly have an impact on our landscapes and wildlife, and to our road networks. Making the case for improvements to our local road and rail infrastructure as well as making sure that EDF protects our countryside, continues to be one of my main priorities, as your MP. In December 2021, the Planning Inspectorate asked the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to grant an extension to the reporting stage of the Sizewell C project, something which I broadly welcome and which allows a further opportunity to press again for a Four Villages Bypass. Last month, I wrote to the Lead Examiner for Sizewell C at the Planning Inspectorate requesting them to take into account the likely future route for

a Four Villages Bypass, which is something I have long supported. I'm pleased to have already helped to secure agreement from EDF for a bypass for the two villages of Stratford St Andrew and Farnham, but securing a full Four Villages Bypass remains important. The current proposals would make a future extension of the planned Two Villages Bypass to include Little Glemham and Marlesford much more challenging, and potentially miss a vital strategic opportunity to fully improve and upgrade our part of the A12. Residents of Marlesford and Little Glemham already experience heavy traffic volumes, particularly during the summer months, and the added pressure of Sizewell C traffic would make this worse. I believe it is shortsighted to consider any plan that would make a future Four Villages Bypass more difficult, so I have now also requested an urgent meeting with The Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP who is the Secretary of State for Energy to discuss this matter, and as well as other important issues connected with the building of Sizewell C. I also remain concerned that EDF are reluctant to consider supporting a much-needed pedestrian and cycle way from Marlesford to Wickham Market, as the existing path is unsafe for
use by pedestrians and unusable by wheelchair users or cyclists. I believe a new and extended path is urgently needed to improve the safety of vulnerable road users; given the worrying existing safety hazards will be further exacerbated directly by the cumulative effect of Sizewell C construction traffic. It is my view that funding for this path and cycle route should come from energy project developers and I shall be pursuing this matter with them directly. I have also written to Cllr Steve Gallant, Leader of East Suffolk District Council, strongly supporting Marlesford Parish Council's submission on this subject and requesting that the council also backs these proposals. I would like to thank the many people, including District and Parish Councillors, who work tirelessly to negotiate mitigation measures against the challenges that Sizewell C will undoubtedly bring. It is difficult to single out individuals, but I would like to thank your District Councillor, Carol Poulter for her work on your behalf in taking the case to EDF. In particular, Marlesford Parish Councillor Richard Cooper is owed a huge debt of gratitude for the tireless hard work and expertise that he brings to our communities in this matter and from which we all benefit.

Thank you to Derek Newby for a donation from the sale of his autobiography. We received donations raised in memory of Lorraine Hunt, Colin Shiers, and Sheila Whistlecraft. Thank you to their families and friends for supporting The Pear Tree Fund. We're grateful to other local organisations who have raised money for us over the last two months. A special thank you to Kevin and Kate and their staff at the Queen's Head, Bramfield, who have helped raised over £3k for us over the last two years, and continue to support by selling cards, hosting a collection box and holding a race night fundraiser in February. The start of 2022 has been an exciting time at The Pear Tree Fund. We launched our 'Cooking for One' course for people who have been bereaved, led by Pear Tree Centre Manager, Seva Newrick, ably assisted by our wonderful volunteers. 'Peer Relief', our new fortnightly cancer support group, led by people with lived experience of cancer, began in late February. Responding to the needs of our local community, we are starting a 'Men's Wellbeing Group' on Monday afternoons to complement our 'Women's Wellbeing Group' that meets on Tuesday mornings at the Pear Tree Centre. Qi Gong on Monday mornings has become so popular we are looking at starting a second class. The Elders Wellbeing Programme, led by Kinda Education, in partnership with the Pear Tree, continues to grow and develop. The Elders recently relocated to the Pear Tree Centre, where we built a fire, enjoyed storytelling and singing and discussed the importance of Holocaust Remembrance Day. We recently took delivery of a Robopet (Freckles the Dog) on loan from East Suffolk Council. He has given much joy to visitors of the Pear Tree Centre, especially those living with dementia and people who are feeling distressed. We'd like to thank our fantastic volunteers, both at Dee's Den Charity Shop and the Pear Tree Centre, without whom we could not continue to support people with life-changing illnesses and long-term health conditions and their families. Dee's Den are planning another exciting fashion show in the summer with more details to follow. Visit the shop in Steeple End Halesworth to find hidden treasures and donate items
As spring approaches, Woodbridge Cruising Club members are looking forward to boats going back in the water and sailing again. Meanwhile, the winter social programme has a variety of activities, with the ever popular Wednesday suppers and Thursday walks a welcome break from inclement weather. The first 2022 walk was from Butley Oyster, along the Suffolk Coasts and Heath Paths, passing Butley Priory and returning across arable land. The subsequent walk was around Levington along the Orwell foreshore, through woods and fields and ending at the Ship Inn for a welcome drink and lunch, led by Commodore Stephen Lines. Walkers and dogs enjoyed this beautiful route, which is a perennial favourite. Forthcoming walks are from Shottisham, along the Deben Estuary and to Stone Point, led by John and Liz. Most walks end with a welcome pub lunch. The Sunday talks (arranged by Captain Peter King) are, as always, fascinating. January talks commenced with the East Anglian Sailing Trust by

Woodbridge Art Club pottery news note in your diary to visit the Art Club over Easter just to see what on earth has been going into the kiln. Of course, other pottery will be available to view and indeed purchase. Let's hope for some fine weather at Easter. Stop press: Andy Wright's industrial teapot that was chosen as the winner at the art club was recently picked as second best at an Anglian Potters meeting by none other than Keith Brymer Jones, a judge on TV's The Great Pottery Throw Down.
Woodbridge Flower Club Woodbridge Flower Club held their first meeting of the year where the demonstrator was Pat South from Felixstowe. Pat spoke about her various travels around the world and her arrangements depicted some of the countries she had visited. As always, the meeting ended with refreshments and a raffle and it was lovely to have time to talk to other members after such a long break. Our meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at Martlesham Community Hall starting at 2pm. New members are always welcome.

As I write this, The Great Pottery Throw Down is being shown on national TV. Some of you may not know that the art club has been running its own Potters Throw Down for the last five years and over the Easter bank holiday, the visitors to the Club's exhibition are invited to vote for what they consider is the best piece of work. This vote is absolutely free and you don't have to leave your name, address, email or inside leg measurement. Last year, the challenge was to make a teapot which, in fact, poses quite a few problems for the potters to solve, not least being to make sure it doesn't drip and the lid fitted properly. There were even some votes for the Club's ancient brown teapot, circa 1950, that had years of accumulated tea stains encrusted in the bottom. Some said that you didn't need to put any fresh tea in to make a brew! So this year, the potters have been given the task of making an abstract pot. I don't know what that conjures up in your mind, but just thinking about it has got my poor brain cell totally confused. For heavens sake, what is 'abstract'? If you're as intrigued as me, put a

As we reach the end of another tax year, a few last minute tips that might save you some tax before 5th April 2022. Dividend and Interest Allowance: Dividend allowance is £2,000 per person. Interest Allowance is £1,000 for basic rate taxpayers and £500 for those at 40%. If a married couple can transfer capital or stocks and shares, they can make best use of these allowances. Transfers of assets between spouses are exempt from tax but watch out for settlement legislation if the shares are of a private company. Take advice if unsure Annual Gift Exemption: Still unchanged at £3,000, per annum but you can carry unused allowance forward for one year (only) as well. A married couple making gifts could potentially gift £12,000 before 6 April and a further £6,000 days into the 2022/23 tax year if the allowances for 2020/21 are unused. This £18,000 gift could save your
beneficiaries £7,200 Inheritance Tax. The gifts do not have to be cash but watch for Capital Gains Tax if they aren't. Gift Aid - low income: Gift aid works by transferring income on which you have paid tax to your chosen charity. The charity (being exempt from tax) reclaims the basic rate income tax you have suffered. If you have not paid enough tax in the year, HMRC will chase you for the balance. The solution is to wait until after the end of the tax year to see how much tax you have suffered and then make a gift aid donation. Gift Aid can be set back one year to be treated as if paid in the preceding year. This way you can tailor your donations exactly. Gift Aid - high income: Gift Aid also saves higher rate tax too (as well as being able to preserve your allowances if you are over £100,000 gross taxable income). If your income fluctuates, you can use the same method of setting back donations to maximise
higher rate relief. Check with your accountant how to do this as there are rules. Capital Gains allowance: £12,300 for 2020/21. Can you make use of it before the end of the tax year? Specialist advice should be used if unsure. Hope these help Contact details: For further information, please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) via email: robin. beadle@ensors.co.uk" Disclaimer: Specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.

Beccles & Bungay Community News - March 2022 - 15
It starts with a seed... March brings some sunny days to tempt gardeners back into the garden and many of us are really aching for Spring now. This is the month for sowing seeds and getting the garden ready for the summer months ahead. But, before you rush to get sowing, just take some to time to plan what you want to grow, how many plants you are going to need and when you want them to flower or bear fruit. This is particularly good advice for anyone with a vegetable plot. A sowing plan of what seeds and how many to sow each month is your key to successful growing and means
that you wont be throwing out unwanted seedlings and that your flower and vegetable beds will be full all year round. A word of warning about sowing direct into the ground at this time of year: There may be a few sunny days to enjoy outside but the soil can still be chilly, making germination and survival hard. Sowing indoors is a better option, not only does it provide a warm environment for germination but seeds and seedlings are easier to protect from pests. If you can find some environmentally sound sowing trays and containers, rather than
using plastic, then even better. Paper and cardboard pots can be packed snugly in a tray which avoids over handling and makes them easy to water. Small seeds should be scattered sparingly on the surface of compost filled seed trays and then covered with a sprinkling of sieved compost. If the seeds are big enough to handle, then you can sow them individually into 10cm pots. The quantity should be according to the instructions specified on the seed packet, but usually for small seeds between five to ten seeds per pot. For plants that grow long roots (such as peas or beans) you can put them into a compost filled cardboard toilet roll tube, and once ready they can then be planted outside tube and all. Most seeds will germinate and grow in a warm setting such as a greenhouse, cold frame or on a sunny windowsill. You should keep them damp by using a mist spray to start with before moving onto a watering can with a fine rose nozzle. Once the seedlings have grown their second pair of leaves and before they get too squashed

in seed trays or pots, pot them on into small pots. Simply ease out a clump of seedlings with an old cutlery fork or dibber and (handling only the leaves to avoid damaging delicate stems and roots) gently tease them apart. Drop individual seedlings into a 5cm compost filled newspaper pot ensuring the lower leaves are above the compost level. Once you see roots appearing from the bottom of the pot, it's time to pot on to a bigger pot before planting outside once the weather and soil warms up. If you're growing your own vegetables, then now is a good time to sow first early potatoes. These can be planted from midMarch however planting times will vary across the country according to temperature and risk of frost. Early potatoes grow well
Harleston and District u3a Harleston and District u3a invites you to its monthly meeting on Wednesday 16th March, at 2pm in St John's Church, Harleston. Wendy Keeble will give a talk about her travels round the Caribbean and the Americas on a 46ft yacht. "Turn Right when the Butter Melts" will feature life on board, as well as the experiences and adventures she and her husband had during their journey. in the ground and in containers such as potato grow bags or old compost bags. You should plant your chitted potatoes with the shoots facing upwards in soil with plenty of well rotted organic matter, and approximately 12cm deep and 30cm apart. Once stems are about 23cm tall, they will need earthing up, by drawing soil around them to create a 15cm high ridge, to protect against frost and keep growing potatoes covered. Good varieties of early potatoes are: Swift (good for containers, white skinned and white fleshed), Annabelle (nutty flavour with firm waxy yellow flesh), Maris Bard (white flesh with good 'new potato' flavour and drought resistance). Spring seems tantalizing close in March particularly as work in the garden starts to get going again. As the RHS says. Spring usually arrives by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It's time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden. Top three jobs this month 1. Prune bush and climbing roses 2. Plant early potatoes 3. Plant summer flowering bulbs

Ravensmere School Film Stars On Thursday 27th January, the children at Ravensmere Infant School became film stars for the day. A local film company, Offset Films, spent the day with the children and staff capturing some of the amazing learning that takes place within the school. Ravensmere is a unique little school in a beautiful setting by the Quay. It caters for children aged 4-7 with a maximum of sixty children on roll. One of the pupils, Cara, said: "I loved having the film crew
at school. When I was being filmed, I was nervous to begin with but soon felt more confident especially when talking to the camera." Another pupil, Adam, said: "I really enjoyed seeing how all of the cameras and microphones worked. I felt like a film star." The finished film can be watched on our school website and through our school Twitter and Facebook pages. If you'd like to find out more about our school, we'd love to hear from you.

Most rainfall on one day: 0.25" on the 2nd. Wind direction, mainly from: west 7 days, north-west 7 days, south-west 6 days, south 4 days and 5 days were also calm. January 2022 overall was very dry with average temperatures
month finished 0.8C below long term, thus average was attained for January in mean temperature terms. Just 0.84" of rainfall was the only the 6th instance of January recording less than 1-inch total on my 54 year record. It was also the driest January since 2006 and also a total contrast to last January when the 4.14" total made it the wettest first month since 1995. All but 0.12" of the total and 8 of the 10 rain days for the month had been noted by the 11th. Totally dry days 12th to 19th and 21st to 29th inclusive led to a relatively rare winter month's partial drought. The absence of snowfall in January was most welcome and the 9th instance since the turn of the century (22 years). There was only 1 snow day in January 2021, 3 in 2019, the equal snowiest for the month since 2013. From 1969 to 1999 (31 years) only 5 times did January not suffer a snow day. More evidence of global warming? The debates continues. A cautionary note, this winter so far we fortunately have had a virtual absence of Easterly type winds. For although high pressure dominated much of the last 3 weeks of January, the flow was from the north-west to southwest, or even dead calm at times. However, as we enter February, potentially winter has not yet left us. After all as the saying goes "if Candlemas Day (February 2nd) is fair and bright (it was) then winter may have another flight". There is always a possibility of harsh conditions. We only have to cast our minds back to last February, 5 days of actual snowfall and lying on nine consecutive mornings commencing February 7th.

compared with long-term average. There were 2 somewhat milder periods of 3 days each, 1st to 3rd and 27th to 29th. The 1st of these was a continuation of the very mild spell commencing on the 28th December, during which close to record temperatures were achieved for both months. Inevitably, there were many other days when conditions were more in keeping with the month of January, 2 days failed to reach 5C maximum. However because a total of 16 days reached or exceeded 8C, average maximum temperature finished 0.8 degree Celsius above long-term expectation. The mildest day of this month with 14.5C maximum recorded on 1st and mildest January day since equal best of 15.0C on 09/01/2015 and 20/01/2008. The overnight period following New Year's Day recorded an incredible 11.1C minimum, the second mildest January night on my entire record. Only 11.8C noted on 06/01/1983 has bettered this figure. Bear in mind these figures are around 4C above the average daytime expectation for the month. There were many sunny days, I understand this was one of the sunniest Januaries on long term records. While this has the effect of adding a little extra warmth during the day, clear skies in evening and night at this time of the year soon lose whatever warmth has been generated, resulting in many chilly nights. While air frosts were relatively few (5) and not severe (minimum -2.0C on the 5th and 6th), there were also another 20 nights with an air minimum of +2C or less and prone to ground frost. The overall average minimum for the
