As we move into 2024, I would personally, and also from the Executive Committee, like to thank all of our fantastic sponsors, both who provide adverts or pitch side boards, our team kit sponsors (the list is long!), the brilliant volunteers as without them this club could not run, Community News and the sales team for putting this magazine together, and lastly, all our supporters, and readers of this. We appreciate you all!
@BecclesTownFootballClub
As we head into 2024, the club is moving forward with a number of exciting projects, not least our new toilet block project for the Nest and College Meadow which we hope all being well will be in place by summer 2024, however, we still have funding to raise so that we can complete this. So please, if anyone would like to donate (no matter how small), get in touch with me directly, or email the club and we can provide you with details on how to help us with this project.

Beccles Disability Inclusive Football TRUSTEE REPORT - James Cook - 31st July 2023
I visited the training session with my wife on July 29th, which is held on the 3G pitch on Common Lane. Before I comment on the Beccles Disability Inclusive Football, I would like to pay reference to the marvellous 3G facility which the charity helped support (before my time as a Trustee). To see literally 100's of people, kids, parents and grandparents at the Nest brings it home what a great asset the town has in an era when we hear about kids not getting off their PlayStation's it flies in the face of that misconception. Now that Mark Jermey has finished his long stint as Beccles Football Club Chairman, I hope you will allow me a moment to congratulate him on his hard work to make the club all inclusive and a true gem for Beccles. They say a picture tells a thousand words and if there is ever a better example, I would like to see it. The utter joy on the kids/young people who were playing and the parents watching
was heart-warming beyond belief. One of the issues you will see from the picture is the difference in age/size of the participants. Chris and his team are trying to expand numbers sufficiently (ideally 22+ per week) that they can split the group into more equal abilities and athleticism. It is difficult to put aside the emotion of what this Beccles asset brings to individuals and parents when hearing stories of one of the mums in tears as she never thought she would see her son (Joe) score a goal. She did comment that she was almost in tears for other reasons when it was all he talked about all week until the next training session. However, with a Trustee hat on, the question may be raised about the number of Beccles people attending the sessions compared to the monies requested; to be honest it felt an inappropriate question to ask when the coaches are Beccles people offering their time for free and I make
no apology for reiterating the 3G Beccles asset and forwarding thinking all-inclusive Beccles Town FC. The coaches take it in turns to run one lad back to Bungay as his parents do not drive, again not a basis for the appeal but just another demonstration of the wonderful Beccles people going above and beyond. I was given a handwritten revised application and so have taken the liberty to type it up to accompany my firm conviction that we should meet the full amount requested. You can see from the picture, the different football kits being worn and so to further enhance the feeling of belonging to have their own club kit would mean a great deal and this is one of the main revision points from the initial application. The marketing budget did not seem very high to me, but Chris assures me that within his job at Beccles Free School he has connections he can lean on to use the funds efficiently.

Beccles Youth 2023 CELEBRATED 50 YEARS OF YOUTH TEAMS IN BECCLES, HERE WE TAKE A LOOK BACK AT WHERE IT ALL STARTED.
St Benet’s
Wasps Football Club was established in 1973 by the late Stan Gruchy, who served as the caretaker at St Benet’s Primary School in Beccles. Stan also played a role in training the school’s football team. The club officially joined the Anglia Junior League on July 24th, 1973, under the name St Benet’s Wasps, catering to Catholic boys aged 11 to 13. In March 1975, a senior team for 13 to 15-year-olds was formed. Over the past 50 years, the club has grown significantly, currently consisting of 22 teams spanning ages U7 to U16. Most teams participate in the Norfolk and Suffolk Youth League during the 2013/2014 season, while there

The origin of the club’s name has been a subject of debate. While the St Benets prefix is straightforward, the choice between “Wasps” or “Hornets” remains a question. Eventually, the club settled on “St Benet’s

senior side. The selection of these names appears to have been influenced by the popularity of animal, bird, and insect-themed team names in the Anglia Junior League during that time. In 2014, St Benet’s Wasps FC underwent a significant change as they merged with Beccles Town Football Club. This decision came about due to the concern of losing players once they turned 16, as consistent playing opportunities in the Norfolk and Suffolk Youth League were lacking. By merging, they aimed to provide a clear pathway for players from U16’s through U18’s and onto Anglian Combination senior football. This
move also ensured a continuous supply of homegrown talent for Beccles Town FC, while St Benet’s Wasps gained a senior section for players transitioning from youth football. Additionally, the merger opened up new opportunities for
obtaining grants and funding for the united club. As a result of the merger, the name and badge of St Benet’s Wasps Football Club were changed. They adopted the name “Beccles Town Youth,” and the new badge incorporated elements from both clubs: the Wherry symbol of Beccles Town with the Wasp emblem of St Benet’s Wasps on its sail.

Beccles Town Adult update
Beccles Town have had a good 1st half of the season. So far, the 1st team (not quite halfway through their league games) currently sit in 7th, only 6 points off 2nd place and with lots to play for in the 2nd half of the season in the league. In the cup, we unfortunately went out away at Trimley in the county cup, having a poor 1st half showing that cost us the game. However in the league cup, we have made the semi finals and await the draw for the semi finals where we hope for a home tie hopefully. As always, we’ve had a few injuries in the first half of the season and are hopeful that in the seasons 2nd half, we will have more competition for places with players now back fit.
We’ve had great support at home fixtures so far and hopefully this continues into the 2nd half of the season. We’re grateful to all supporters and sponsors. Without these, the club would not be able to provide what it does for the people of Beccles. We also appreciate the amount our volunteers do for the club, which the players and myself appreciate so much. The Reserves have had a great start to the season, currently sitting in 2nd place in the league and also in the quarter final of both county and league cups that they play at the end of January and start of February. Lots to play for and all the lads are wanting to do well in all three competitions.
The A team and development sides have both had good 1st half of the season and both sit mid-table in theie leagues and have also seen players step up from both sides which is great to see. Our U18s have improved recently and continue to work hard at both training and in fixtures with still a young group of players able to play U18 football again next season. We are always looking for people to help in any form at the club so any small amount would be greatly appreciated. Contact numbers can be found on the clubs website if you’d like to find out more ways to get involved with the club.
Festive Soccer School Thrives BTFC held its 4th soccer school of the year over the Christmas period. It was well attended with over 60 children attending. Five separate games/exercises were set up with everyone attending each game. Just before the end, Father Christmas turned up and handed every child a present.

Self-belief IN SPORT
Self-belief
in sport is regarded as one of the most important areas to gain results and enhance performances. A belief in anything generally comes from an acknowledgement. In a sporting sense this might be a great session at training or an exceptional performance in a match. In sport nearly all managers believe that self confidence helps players to reach that higher level. Self confidence allows players to thrive in their environment. This
also gives the belief that they can overcome any obstacle and that they can achieve their goals both in a match or at training. Very simple phrases to players such as “I believe in you”, or “you are really improving, you are amazing” will make a massive difference. When facing a challenge such as playing a match against a stronger team a little bit of self-belief before kick off can enhance the whole teams performance. This confidence can be infectious and spread from one player to another until the whole team ‘believes’. When confidence comes from the manager it will provide the focus needed to perform at that higher level. As a team we do not always have to have the most skilful players and all at the same level. A mixture of abilities and skills builds a team.
by Matthew Humby
Providing support, understanding and positive messages will be pay dividends for the managers, whilst enhancing individuals both on and off the pitch. Ask your players to ask themselves a question, “What can I bring to the next match?” This can help them to remember their abilities and focus on the positives. This in turn shows them that they should believe in their abilities going forward. This is considerably more effective than relying on the emotional state of your players. All of the above are simple free tips to help everyone, not only in sport, but in life. To grow and be much more confident in whatever comes their way. Everyone has the ability to become a great player. Sometimes the only thing missing is self-belief. This positive message needs to come from you, the managers and the coaches, to all of our fantastic teams! Positive Reinforcement: Coaches should focus on providing regular and sincere praise for their players’ efforts, progress, and achievements. Positive reinforcement boosts confidence and helps players believe in their abilities, motivating them to work harder and strive for success.
OnSide HERE ARE A FEW STRATEGIES
you can implement that can create a positive and nurturing environment that fosters self-belief and confidence in players, allowing them to reach their full potential. Setting Realistic Goals: Establishing attainable and challenging goals tailored to each player’s skill level fosters a sense of accomplishment. As players achieve these milestones, their self-belief grows, leading to increased confidence in their abilities on the field. Constructive Feedback and Positive Reinforcement: Providing constructive feedback is essential in helping players identify areas for improvement without demoralizing them. Coaches should offer specific feedback that highlights both strengths and weaknesses, guiding players towards continuous improvement. Positive reinforcement boosts confidence and helps players believe in their abilities, motivating them to work harder and strive for success. Emphasizing Skill Development: Focusing on skill development rather than solely on winning encourages players to concentrate on personal growth and learning. As players become more proficient, they gain confidence in their abilities, which translates to improved self-belief both on and off the pitch. Encouraging Resilience: Encouraging players to embrace challenges, learn from failures, and bounce back from setbacks helps build resilience. When players believe they can overcome obstacles, they develop a strong sense of self-belief, leading to increased confidence in their abilities to handle difficult situations during matches and beyond. Improving Empathy Skills
The Power of Empathy in Sports BUILDING STRONG BONDS FOR SUCCESS by Matthew Humby
Empathy
in sports is one area all coaches need to be aware off, so what is the power of empathy?
Understanding the Essence of Empathy
Empathy is a critical component of success in life; and in sport. But why? Empathy helps you to relate, accept and understand the lives of people not only within your team but around you. Whether you are a coach, player or a member of the club, the one thing you all have in common is that you are sharing in the lives of other people. Its vital that we understand each and everyone as we pass through each others lives. We only see the person at that very moment, but we must understand some background as to how that person is feeling; this could be a bad day at work, school, or just one of those days. We must try to not judge individuals but learn to understand them as part of our team. For example, smile and take time to talk to someone who maybe is not their normal self. Remember each one of your teams names and make sure you give each member your full attention, understand them as a person and make sure when you are giving constructive feedback you remember them as a person. Every 14 BECCLES TOWN FC
member of the team wants to do the very best they can. Providing this support are the foundations of what Beccles Town FC is all about. It’s all about being part of the BTFC family. And that’s what we all are. Empathy doesn’t cost anything, but it can be hugely rewarding. It
Developing empathy skills can have a significant impact on team dynamics and overall performance. Here are some tips to enhance empathy within the club: Soothing Communication: The tone of communication is crucial. Studies show that providing feedback in a soft, warm, and supportive tone, even when addressing negative aspects, leaves athletes feeling more positive and encouraged. Active Listening: We all feel valued and supported when we know we are genuinely being heard. Encouraging active listening without interruptions fosters trust and open communication.
Empathy doesn’t cost anything, but it can be hugely rewarding. It makes people feel wanted and that they are part of a bigger family. makes people feel wanted and that they are part of a bigger family. Plus, the benefits for all coaches will be seen in the results and the effort put in. Empathy means people getting on with others and the key is to develop great relations within your own team.
Self-awareness: Coaches, parents and players can work towards becoming more empathetic by examining their behaviours and their impact on others. Keeping a journal of interactions can help in identifying areas for improvement and building stronger relationships within the team. Empathy is the glue that binds a football club together, creating a sense of belonging and a shared pursuit of success. At Beccles Town Footbal Club empathy should not just be a concept but a way of life. Enriching the experiences of everyone involved and paving the way for exceptional achievements both on and off the field.
