All other tine drills have upward facing chisel tines which hook grass seed up from below the stale seed bed into the top 5cm germination zone.
The Triton blade design is vital in making sure the drilling pass does not create its own grass weeds in the clean stale seed bed.

Asharp rise in quad bike thefts is piling the pressure on sheep farmers at the busiest time of year.
An ongoing increase in thefts of the all-terrain vehicles has prompted warnings to ramp up tarm security. It follows a 26% annual increase in the cost of quadbike thefts last year, bringing the total value to £2.8m in 2022.
Thieves are targeting sheep farms where quads are a vital tool – especially for lone workers, said rural insurer NFU Mutual. It is advising farmers to take extra security measures to avoid becoming victims.
NFU Mutual machinery expert Bob Henderson said: “A
shortage of new machines has driven the price of second-hand quads higher and this has led to a feeding-frenzy from criminal gangs who steal the vehicles to sell on in the UK and across the globe.
Mr Henderson added: “The supply chain problems which are driving up prices are also making it difficult for farmers to source replacement machines when their quads are stolen.”
To help protect farmers, NFU Mutual is working with quad manufacturers to provide customers with free tracking and immobilisation equipment on

vehicles bought to replace stolen quads and ATVs, following a paid claim.
Mr Henderson added: “Today’s criminals will spend time watching farms to see where quads are kept and then come back with tools to break in and steal them.
“To reduce the risk of becoming a victim of quad theft it’s vital to always remove keys when not on the machine and always secure your quad when it’s not in use.
“Thieves often will return to a farm where they have stolen a quad in the hope of stealing its replacement. To beat repeat thefts, we’re working with manufacturers to provide our customers who have had a quad stolen with free tracking devices and immobilisers.”
Detective Constable Chris Piggott, of the National Rural Crime Unit, said: “Tracking, immobilisation and security marking are the most effective measures against quad theft as they deter thieves and make it easier for police to catch the gangs be-
hind these crimes.
“To avoid buying a stolen piece of kit and fuelling the criminal trade, we’re urging farmers to obtain serial numbers for the quad and check these with companies such as HPI who can fully provenance them.
Farmers buying a used quadbike should speak to their local dealership to see if they have any records of the bike – or ask for copies of original invoices from the seller, suggested Mr Piggott.
NFU Mutual has introduced a new discount scheme for members who purchase Scorpion security products. The move is in addition to existing discounts for measures such as CESAR marking, approved trackers, immobilisers and mechanical devices.
Amajor auction on behalf of one of the UK’s largest agricultural machinery and ground care dealerships included more than 300 lots – including 55 tractors.
Established in 1982, Ripon Farm Services supplies agricultural machinery, equipment and support throughout Yorkshire, Teesside, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. The sale of excess stock took place on 30 March.
As well as late registered John Deere tractors, the auction included 10 combine harvesters, 14 telescopic loaders, ten UTVs, five forage harvesters and an extensive range of grassland machinery, cultivation equipment and trailers.
Oliver Godfrey, head of ma-
chinery at auctioneers Cheffins, said: “Ripon Farm Services has grown rapidly over the past four years and the growth in the services and products it provides to its customers is expected to continue.
“As part of its growth strategy and continued investment in the business, RFS is taking the opportunity to hold this auction to clear some of its excess stock. This was a major sale, with some high prices throughout all the sections.”
Mr Godfrey added: “Recent sales hosted on site on behalf of farmers, contractors and dealers, as well as regular auctions at our machinery sale ground at Cheffins have gone from strength to strength.
“Prices are rising as the export market comes back in full force, with buyers making the most of the weaker pound. Lot prices have increased as a lack of stock continues to encourage buyers back to the second-hand market.”
Richard Gravill, group used equipment Manager at Ripon
Farm Services, said: “Our business has had three very successful years and has sold a large amount of equipment across the group, on average we trade in two machines to one sale.
“We appointed Cheffins to conduct the auction on our behalf as the company has a vast client base both in the UK and globally. We have a great relationship with Cheffins and regularly use their services at their monthly auctions.”
Continental has launched its largest tractor tyre to date – the VF TractorMaster VF900/60R42 – with a diameter of 2,147 millimetres.
Weighing 450kg with a load index of 189 (10,300 kg), the tyre size is specifically designed to manage the weight, improve the grip, and reduce the impact of agricultural machinery with more than 300 horsepower.
Rising costs and the pressure to transport increasingly larger loads in a shorter time mean demand for powerful agricultural machinery is growing, says Benjamin Hübner, product line manager for agricultural tyres at Continental.
“This development not only demands top performance from machines, but also from their tyres. That is why we develop and test our agricultural tyres in close consultation with our customers.”
The trend toward large machines is the primary goal of
working even more efficiently and cost-effectively. Continental launched five new tyre sizes of its VF TractorMaster last year to meet this demand.
VF technology enables the tyre to be driven with 40% more load at the same tyre pressure
as a standard tyre – or 40% less tyre pressure at the same load. VF technology tyres are also more fuel-efficient than conventional tractor tyres.
Mr Hübner said: “The VF TractorMaster combines efficiency and soil preservation. The VF technol-
ogy allows for a smooth transition from field to road without having to adjust the tyre pressure.
“At the same time, the impact of heavy machinery on the soil is minimised by a wider tread surface when working in the field.”

Grange Machinery has extended its dealership network with the appointment of Manns to cover East Anglia, Kent and Leicestershire.
A family run company based in East Yorkshire, Grange Machinery manufactures cultivation, crop establishment machinery and wearing parts to farmers across the UK, Europe and as far afield as New Zealand.
The Grange product range helps lower the cost of crop establishment while improving soil structure and efficiency in the field. Machines can transform implements that may already be on the farm, offering greater flexibility and efficiency.
The range specialises in adaptable low disturbance toolbars and standalone looseners which offer solutions to cultivation and seeding challenges. Grange Machinery has also recently launched the Strip-Till Preparator, which is now in full production.
“We are delighted to be working with Manns,” said Grange Machinery managing director Rhun Jones.
“There is an excellent fit be-
tween our products and the range offered by Manns and the compa ny has a strong presence and longstanding reputation in the key ar able regions of the country where many of our target customers are located.”
Part of the Claas global ag ricultural machinery business, Manns has seven depots across East Anglia, Kent and Leicester shire. They sell the full range of Claas machinery plus Horsch’s cultivation and seeding products, among other franchises.
Manns sales director Paul Moss said: “We are looking forward to offering Grange Machinery’s products, which complement our Horsch range perfectly, presenting an ideal solution for farmers and contractors who wish to loosen soil ahead of a cultivator or drill.”
“The combination is sure to be of great interest where farming for the benefit of the land is a goal, and offers us an exciting opportunity in that marketplace.
“Grange Machinery is a great example of a company that is ‘big enough to matter but small enough to care’, designing its products with the farmer in mind and we are very pleased to be working
with Rhun and his team.”
The range will be showcased at Manns’ Geared for Growth demonstration tour from 4 April to 10 May. Visitors will see a 6m Low Disturbance Toolbar, 4m Low Disturbance loosener, 4m Close Coupled Toolbar and the Strip-Till Preparator in action.
Further north, Grange Machinery has extended its dealer network with the appointment of Peacock & Binnington to cover North Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire – another key area for both companies.
Five outlets
Peacock & Binnington, which has been serving farmers since 1894, will cover North Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire from five outlets: Brigg, Corringham, Halsham,
Selby and Kirby Misperton.
“With P&B being local to Grange, we have worked closely with the company in the past and find the to be extremely professional and forward-thinking with a fantastic reputation among farmers in the local area,” said Mr Jones.
Peacock & Binnington managing director Graham Main said: “The range of products very much complements our existing franchises and being a local company, suits the conditions in our area perfectly.
“Rhun and his team have developed a professional business and we are excited that we have been appointed. Our demonstration fleet will be with us for spring cultivations; please talk to your local area salesman for details.”
Kverneland’s IsoMatch FarmCentre fleet management and wireless telematics solution has been upgraded to include greater functionality – and the ability to communicate with universal data exchange platform Agrirouter.
With FarmCentre, operators can use their IsoMatch Tellus Pro and Tellus Go+ universal terminals as a gateway to link Kverneland Group implements to cloud-based services. This enables real-time data exchange for sending and receiving tasks.
By adding communication to Agrirouter, implement data access is also available to those using third party terminals, improving cross-manufacturer compatibility between tractors and implements.
New features of FarmCentre include a dedicated dashboard that corresponds to the implement and the task controller, simplifying evaluation of in-field performance, either with specific tasks or throughout the machine’s lifecycle.

Suffolk Agri Centre Fen Rd, Pakenham, Bury Saint Edmunds IP31 2JS.the area’s soils too challenging for the machines he was promoting, he decided to develop his own range of trenchers and the Mastenbroek brand was born.”
As part of the development work, Mr Mastenbroek spent a lot of time with Willem den Hartog, who also saw the benefits drainage could bring to farmers. LDC and Mastenbroek developed in tandem, and that close relationship continues to this day.
LDC took delivery of its latest Mastenbroek machine – a stateof-the-art 30/20 drainage trencher – at the end of 2022.
Two of the region’s biggest drainage companies are celebrating six decades of working together.
With almost 60 years of history, the Lincolnshire Drainage Company undertakes agricultural and civil drainage schemes for more than 1600 repeat customers across the county – and in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.
At the heart of the company’s operation is its fleet of Mas-
tenbroek trenchers and crawler trucks. The two firms have worked together since the beginning – with LDC founder Willem den Hartog being one of John Mastenbroek’s first customers.
“John was a pioneer of agricultural drainage here in the UK,” says Christopher Pett, Mastenbroek’s commercial director.
“He came to the UK to sell Dutch-made trenchers to British contractors. But when he found
Over the past six decades, LDC has put 15 Mastenbroek drainage trenchers and gravel carts through their paces. Today, it operates four 30/20 trenchers and five CT12 carts, taking delivery of its latest machine at the end of 2022.
The 30/20 trencher has two dual-speed motors to maximise torque across the digging chain speed range. Making light work of varied and heavy soils, it enables
on-grade sub-surface drainage for agricultural laterals, collectors and cross-country trenching.

Good drainage reduces cultivation and drilling costs
cart last year. The milestone moment was celebrated with a significant upgrade to the machine, with a new larger, full-width hopper and a redesigned operator cab added to the machine.
Mastenbroek has also improved its 30/20 drainage trencher since it was introduced in the 1990`s. Many improvements have been suggested by Mastenbroek’s customers, who include LDC pro-
tenbroek, stretching back beyond 2006 when my father David acquired the business,” says Mr Firth. “As well as working on agricultural drainage, we are undertaking more and more civil work.
“Our civil customers are constantly looking for new and improved safety features alongside
performance. That’s why we asked Mastenbroek to alter the width of the operator walkways on our 30/20s, which they did.
“LDC has always invested in new equipment to ensure our customers receive a cost-effective and efficient job. We hope that the latest 30/20 trencher added to the fleet will provide more productivity for our drainage teams.
“As it features the new Hagglunds chain drives and increased higher horsepower, it should certainly be faster than the previous version.”
All the 30/20 trenchers that LDC operates feature GPS depth control, a system developed by Mastenbroek, Trimble and Farm Works Software in conjunction with LDC.
“We were the first contractor in Europe to use GPS depth control on agricultural drainage projects,” says Mr Firth.
“The latest software version is installed on all our trenchers and delivers precise level control. This allows us to accurate-
ly lay our drains ‘on grade’ to the correct levels, digging only to the required depth and using the required amount of aggregates.
“We achieve this by surveying every drain individually with the trencher. This will appear on a screen in the cab for the operator to see, allowing them to see where there are any lower areas.
“We can use aggregates more effectively, directly targeting each low area for maximum effect each time. The GPS system is far better than the old laser system introduced in the 1970s. It is more accurate for depth control of the trench.
‘Priceless asset’
“It requires less labour in the field and automatically records each job as it goes, so we can produce more precise plans once the work has been carried out. The system is also less susceptible to weather, so we can work when the elements are against us.”
Since it was established, LDC has believed in the benefits that well-drained fields deliver to farmers, says Mr Firth.
Hugh Pearl Lane Drainage has over 60 years experience of contracting, and can supply all of your drainage and trenching requirements from design to construction.
Anew seed drill from Lemken promises minimal draught resistance, an integrated compact disc harrow, comfortable operation and a large, divided seed hopper
Available in 4m and 6m widths, the Solitair DT drilled boasts a leading tyre packer to ensure good reconsolidation. A compact disc harrow sees 465mm diameter concave discs individually protected against overloads by leaf springs.
If reduced tillage is required, vertical wavy discs can be used instead of the concave discs, which penetrate the soil in line of the seeding coulter, reducing both moisture loss and the emergence
of resistant grass weeds.
Lemken UK general manager Paul Creasy said the wavy disc set up had been well received on a pre-production machine in autumn 2022 in the UK during drill demonstrations – and a now available on production machines.
“Late autumn drilling conditions proved no issue for the Solitair DT with Wavy disc to run through green catch crops and drill wheat seed to depth and cover it,” said Mr Creasy.
At the heart of the Solitair’s
seeding technology are individual electrically driven, fertiliser-proof metering units, each of which supplies one distributor with seeds. The seed metering wheels are combined into seed wheel sets.
This eliminates the need to switch seed wheels on and off. The seed wheel sets can be changed without tools. The coulter bar fitted to the Solitair DT features the proven, parallelogram guided OptiDisc double disc coulters with depth control wheel.
The DT seed hopper holds a volume of up to 5,100 litres and is available in a dual hopper version. The dual hopper allows the Solitair DT to be used for combined seeding with fertiliser or for sowing different seeds.
Two variants are available: the single-shot version places fertiliser and seeds in a shared seed furrow, whereas the double-shot version places fertiliser in a line below the seed level via separate fertiliser double disc coulters.
Weaving Machinery has announced the launch of its Mounted GD Disc Drill – available now and designed for smaller farmes requiring a compact machines.
