‘Plan ahead to prevent farm fires’ • Steep rise in machines destroyed by fire • Insurance discounts to farmers available • Take action to mitigate risk, say experts

F

armers and contractors are being advised to use the quieter winter months to put plans in place to avoid farm fires. It follows a steep rise in the number of farm fires during hot summer weather. Combine harvester fires across the UK doubled in number during 2022, for example, with costs spiralling following tinder-dry harvest conditions. NFU Mutual head of risk management services Andy Manson said: “With scientists predicting hotter, drier summers, it makes sense to plan ahead for this possibility and put measures in place to help prevent farm fires and make them easier to put out.

Evacuation plan “In practice, that means making sure all plant and vehicles are regularly maintained and checked for

wear and damage – particularly to electrical parts and wiring. It’s also important to have a regularly-revised fire plan.” A fire plan should cover evacuation procedures for buildings, managing livestock, maintenance and cleaning schedules for machinery and training and inspection procedures for fire alarms and extinguishers, said Mr Manson. “For highly vulnerable kit, including combines and balers, rigorous attention to maintenance and cleaning is essential. NFU Mutual also recommends fitting fire suppressors to combines and offers premium discounts to policyholders who fit approved systems.” NFU Mutual dealt with more than 2,200 farm fire claims involving growing crops, buildings and farm equipment in 2022, compared to over 1,800 in

2021. The UK cost of farm fires totalled £83.5m.

Damage to farms With UK temperatures reaching 40°C for the first time, tinder dry conditions saw a large number of fires, causing damage to crops and buildings but also putting animals and lives in danger. In addition, UK agricultural vehicle fire claims, recorded separately by NFU Mutual, increased by 13% last year. Of this, combine harvesters were the farm vehicles hardest hit by harvest fires, with the number of fires doubling in 2022 to 258. Higher repair and replacement costs led to a rise of 211% to £11.1 million in the value of combine fire claims. With the weather set to become more extreme in the future

with drier and hotter summers on the horizon, NFU Mutual is urging farmers to prepare a comprehensive farm fire prevention plan and fit fire suppressors to combines. NFU Mutual rural affairs specialist Hannah Binns said: “The huge increase in the number of farm fires in 2022 compared to 2021 highlights how important it is for farmers to prepare for very hot and dry summers in the future. “For weeks on end during the summer, the countryside was so dry that a spark or overheating combine bearing could lead to a fire, engulfing the machine and spreading to the surrounding crops. Farmers did a great job putting bowsers of water in fields so fires could be tackled quickly, and ploughing fire breaks across fields to stop fires spreading – but even these measures weren’t enough to prevent losses.

Tilt correction system is central to plough update

A

tilt correction system that maximises available tractor power and increases work rates is a key feature on Kuhn Farm Machinery’s updated Multi-Leader XT plough range. Originally introduced in 2012, the range is available in seven, eight or nine furrows. The tilt correction system aligns the working angle of the plough to reduce fuel use, lower slippage and reduce wear. The system is compatible with GPS to streamline the relationship between tractor and machine and constantly adjusts to maintain optimum working width while maximising the tractors power in both on-land and in-furrow formats.

Efficient ploughing The plough features a 180mm by 180mm beam and ability to plough from 350mm (14in) to 500mm (20in) widths. It is a semi-mounted single wheel unit, both on-land and in-furrow op-

tions for tractors up to 405hp. Kuhn arable product specialist Edd Fanshawe says the tilt correction system will increase working efficiency. “The system will help users achieve the most efficient ploughing operation, especially when combined with GPS.” On-land users can operate tracked or twin tracked machines up to 4.5m wide. This setup helps to reduce fuel consumption and

increase comfort, while lowering compaction of the furrow base. Tilt correction is standard on all models and allows ploughs up to nine furrows to align with the tractor’s pull line. Tool-free adjustment of levelling, tilt and offset save users time when setting up and making changes during work to suit conditions. Other features include a Zbeam to accommodate the single wheel position for a streamlined

and compact design. A bevelled rear extension aids ploughing next to fences and hedges, while a press arm is available for on-land and in-furrow setups. “The plough is still a vital tool in the cultivation strategy for many farms and even growers who previously turned away from ploughing are now using one in a targeted way. These updates increase the options for operators after high output ploughs.”

extensive range of forage equipment will be exhibited by Krone at this month’s LAMMA event – including a new 10-rotor tedder and SmartBale mobile app. Compact in size, the new Vendro C 1120 10-rotor tedder, complete with OptiTurn rotor technology, offers exceptional operational reliability, maximum output and optimised forage quality, says the company. Available with a drawbar or three-point linkage attachment, the trailed tedder has a working width of 11.2m and works well in combination with smaller tractors. Working height can be adjusted manually or via an optional electro-hydraulic system.

SmartBale app The new SmartBale mobile app, compatible with Krone’s BaleCollect and award-winning SmartConnect technology, simplifies the process of collecting bales from the field. GPS tracking provides immediate identification and location of specific bales. At a time of increasingly unpredictable weather, this allows swift co-ordination of field operations in small harvest windows. The app provides useful data, including harvest conditions and bale origin, age, dimensions and weight, along with colour coding of moisture content.

assey Ferguson will launch its brand-new flagship MF 9S large frame tractor to the UK market when it returns to LAMMA 2024. After over five years away from the two-day machinery show, Massey Ferguson says its new six-model MF 9S range will take centre stage on 17-18 January at the Birmingham NEC. Features include an updated 8.4-litre six-cylinder engine, with power management offering up to 30hp extra for all models, apart from the flagship MF 9S.425, which gets a constant 425hp. Previewing the new MF tractor at the premiere machinery event in the UK was one of the key reasons for returning to LAMMA, says Massey Ferguson’s UK brand manager William Judge. “There has been a high number of requests from both customers and

dealers for Massey Ferguson to go back to LAMMA and, with the launch of our new MF 9S range, it was a perfect time to return. “There has been a lot of speculation around the new tractor, and we are incredibly excited to bring it to market in 2024 to further cement our position in the high horsepower sector.”

Transmission All models feature a Dyna-VT transmission as standard. For the first time, MF will offer a central trye inflation system, which uses twin 650-litre/min compressors to adjust tyre pressures, helping to reduce soil compaction. The stand will feature a 30-year celebration of MF’s iconic sloping bonnet design, with the latest MF 5S range continuing the concept and manoeuvrability offering views to 4m ahead of the tractor and a 4m turning radius. pico will launch a significant new addition to its HE-VA cultivations line-up at LAMMA – the Top Strigle straw harrow. As many farmers continue towards reduced or no-till crop establishment, Opico has seen demand grow for a fast, cost-effective implement to spread straw evenly across the field to assist with drilling and slug control – and combat problem grass weeds. Working directly behind the combine, the Top Strigle’s five rows of heavy-duty harrow tines spread trash and create a micro tilth to prompt a flush of growth. The harrow disturbs slug eggs exposing them to sunlight, destroying the next generation of the pests. The Top Strigle is most effective working at a slight angle to the combine’s direction of travel to establish an even coverage of straw and chaff across the whole field. This makes for easier trash flow for subsequent tillage and drilling operations. Hydraulic tine angle adjustment means it is possible to vary the harrow’s aggressiveness on the move as conditions change. A Stocks seeder unit is an option for those that plan to use the Top Strigle as a tool to establish cover- and catch-crops. Available in working widths of 3m to 10m, the new HEVA straw harrow exhibited at LAMMA is designed to be operated at speeds of 15-25kph.

HS2 cancellation boosts sales of plant and construction kit • Scrapped project sparks major auction • Better prices for well-equipped machines • Buyers and sellers enjoy value for money

C

ancellation of the government’s HS2 rail project has seen a rise in the number of construction machines and equipment offered for sale. Many of the machines on offer are built to industrial specification, have only been used for a handful of hours and are available in nearly new condition, says Oliver Godfrey, head of the machinery division at Cambridgeshire auctioneers Cheffins. While the logjam for new equipment appears to be easing, many buyers head to auction to get better value for money, adds Mr Godfrey. As a result, secondhand machinery prices continue to increase for decent agricultural and plant equipment. “Recent sales on behalf of contractors and dealers, as well as

farmers, have shown that the second-hand machinery market continues to pull punches with prices consistently rising for good quality and well-maintained machinery.

Export market “The export market has also returned with full force over the past 12 months, with sales worldwide from both our monthly machinery sales hosted at Sutton in Cambridgeshire and at on-site sales hosted throughout the country.” Mr Godfrey made the comments as Cheffins prepared to host a major auction on behalf of nationwide agricultural and construction machinery hire business Staines Hire, which was heavily involved in the HS2 project. Totalling over 119 lots, the

sale included 20 John Deere and JCB tractors, 18 fuel bowsers, 30 tankers, flatbed trailers, HV tractor units and various other pieces of machinery. The auction was held at the Bicester Heritage site, Oxfordshire. Based in Torrington, Devon, Staines Hire was established in 1992 by Eddie Staines and has grown steadily to become one of the most reliable agricultural and trailer manufacturers in the United Kingdom. As a major agricultural and plant machinery hire business, Staines Hire has been involved in some of the largest infrastructure projects across the UK to

date, including Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station – as well as HS2. Staines Hire plant hire manager Geoff Wyatt said cancellation of the HS2 rail project meant many of the machines offered for sale had barely been used. The business was now looking to focus on its home territory of southwest England. “Having been one of the predominant hire companies involved in the build of HS2, the machinery offered at the Cheffins sale is now surplus to our requirements following the cutbacks from the government across all sections of the line.” Staines Hire continued to offer a reliable source of operated and self-drive machinery for contractors throughout both the construction and agricultural industries, added Mr Wyatt.

ower tool manufacturer Makita has announced the launch of its BAC01 converter which turns DC power into AC power. The 36V converter is suitable for battery charging or the use of corded tools in outdoor job sites where an AC outlet is not available. It converts power simply by connecting the 36V battery pack to the power station. The power converter has been designed to support a variety of requirements, offering multiple outlets that include two AC outlets, two Type-A USB output ports, two Type C USB outlet ports and one DC12V cigar socket. Collectively, users have access to a wide range of options to power multiple items

when out on site and it can also be used to recharge Makita’s batteries for use with its cordless power tools or outdoor equipment. Runtime is application dependent. For example, the PDC1200 will power a 1000W load for about 56 minutes, and the PDC01with 4x BL1860B batteries will power a 750W load for approximately 20 minutes. The power converter is also compatible with Makita’s Makpac system to allow for easy transportation. Measuring 39.5cm by 34.5cm by 16.3cm and weighing 7.3 kilos, it has built-in carrying handles which are retractable when not in use. The BAC01 has a maximum power output of 2,800W and continuous rating of 1,400W.

ers. They really stand the test of time,” he says. “In our business, we work them hard, so the fact we have several trailers on the fleet that are more than 15 years old is testament to their quality.” The sloper Smoothsiders are specified with remote-controlled electric easy sheets and tailboards. In the summer, the tippers will mainly transport wheat, barley and some aggregates across the UK, In the winter, the focus will shift to moving sugar beet.

£650k to combat thefts from farm and construction • Crime gangs targeting machines • Problem continues to get worse • Police clamp down on criminals

A

£650,000 investment has been earmarked to help combat machinery theft – and tackle global crime gangs who often steal valuable equipment to order. The money has been pledged by a partnership of industry representatives over the next three years. It includes rural insurer NFU Mutual, the Construction Equipment Association and the Construction Plant-hire Association It will be used to help fund the National Rural Crime Unit and the National Construction & Agricultural Theft Team (NCATT) – advance the goals of the CESAR construction and agricultural equipment security and registration scheme. Plant and agricultural machinery theft costs an estimated £1 million every week for the construction and agricultural industry and its insurers. The CESAR scheme aims to make it easier to identify stolen machines.

Escalating issue CEA chief executive Suneeta Johal said: “The escalating issue of machinery theft across our country not only disrupts the operational efficiency of businesses but also poses a significant threat to the broader construction sector and rural communities. “The allocated funds are dedicated to advancing the goals and objectives of the CESAR Scheme, significantly enhancing its capabilities in combating the theft of plant machinery and agricultural equipment.” The £650,000 contribution to combating machinery theft is set to be formally announced in January. Ms Johal said: “We are confident that this concerted effort will lead to substantial progress in curbing criminal activities related to equipment theft. “Maintaining a strong, united front against such criminal activities is imperative. Our contribution signifies our resolve to protect the industry, and we

trust that our collective efforts will result in a safer, more secure operations.”

Criminal gangs Last summer, 20 high-value tractors and telehandlers were stolen during August. Superintendent Andy Huddleston, who leads the National Rural Crime Unit, said a criminal gang was likely to be behind the thefts. “Unusually the machinery being stolen are newer pieces of kit – some costing around £100,000 to replace. A number of stolen tractors and loaders have been recovered after being left in se-

cluded areas. “Criminals are leaving stolen machinery for a few days to avoid the risk of detection if a tracking device is fitted to the machines. The thieves are very likely to be moving stolen vehicles out of the UK and selling them on in Eastern Europe.” NFU Mutual’s annual rural crime report found that quad bikes and all-terrain vehicles are particularly vulnerable to theft. A global shortage of microchips and components had heightened demand for the vehicles – with criminals using drones to target farms, it said.

JCB backhoe training and demonstration manager Georgina Williams, 32, took to the water each day near JCB dealers in Dorset, Essex, Norfolk, Manchester, Yorkshire, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. She completed her marathon swimming attempt by taking to the water at JCB World Headquarters’ lake at Rocester. The feat took her fundraising total to more than £5,400 for the company’s NSPCC Appeal. Having initially set a £2,000 12 Essential Farm Machinery January 2024

fundraising target, Ms Williams said she was overwhelmed by the support of JCB’s dealer network, who joined her in the water at each location and helped boost funds. She added: “I feel incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved. The cold-water swimming has been an amazing experience, I knew it would be very special but also that it would be a real challenge to get in the water each day. “Raising money was always the key focus of this swim challenge but I’m delighted that the experience has also allowed me to build relationships with our dealers by sharing in this absolute madness. I’m grateful to all of our UK and Ireland dealers.”

Bobcat offers finance deals on Mini-Excavators

P

urchasers of a Bobcat mini-excavator are being offered a 0% finance plan lasting up to four years, including maintenance and warranty. The company’s new Agility scheme has been designed with increased flexibility in mind – with lower monthly or weekly repayment options to help companies develop and prosper in the tough business climate. Doosan Bobcat finance manager Hayley Quinn said: “It is similar to hire purchase, but offers vastly reduced monthly or weekly repayments compared to the norm, with a final Agility payment at the end of the contract.”

The largest Bobcat compact excavator is described as delivering big performance in a compact machine. It has a recently redesigned engine, optimised lift performance and hydraulic improvements. Aimed at customers in all markets – including construction, rental, agriculture, horticulture, waste, recycling and landscaping – all details and applications for the Agility Finance Scheme are being handled by Bobcat’s network of local dealers. The Agility programme had multiple end of term options to make it even more appealing to customers, said Ms Quinn. The scheme aimed to increase the customer’s purchasing power, providing more machines and attachments for less monthly outlay. With more equipment available, customers could bid for more jobs, increasing their revenue generating potential. In addition, the scheme could reduce customers’ fixed costs, enabling
