Next Generation Patented Drilling Blades

Have you ever found grass weeds in the drill row and assumed it was in the seed?

All other tine drills have upward facing chisel tines which hook grass seed up from below the stale seed bed into the top 5cm germination zone.

The Triton blade design is vital in making sure the drilling pass does not create its own grass weeds in the clean stale seed bed.

£5m of machinery under the hammer

• Gross sales soar 40% year-on-year

• Export market is major destination

• Buoyant demand for used machines

More than £5 million of second-hand farm machinery was sold by auctioneers Cheffins in one of the world’s largest monthly machinery sales.

Export demand saw year-onyear gross sales up by 40% at the Cambridge machinery auction on 6 February at Sutton, near Ely. Individual prices were stronger than the same sale last year

For the second month run ning, about half the lots sold went overseas. Buyers in attendance came from Australia, Canada, South Africa, Ghana, Egypt and the Middle East – as well as from the UKand Europe.

Cheffins director Joe Page said: “This is the most success ful February auction we have hosted in the last five years, as a combination of the return of the

stock helped to push up prices.”

Cheffins has seen a marked increase in the number of sales to overseas buyers since October 2022, with many bidders looking to make the most of the weak pound. Sales have also been buoyed by stock shortages and long lead times for new machin-

“This has ensured UK buyers are competing with purchasers the world over for some of the best second-hand machinery on offer,” said Mr Page. “In addition, overseas buyers have become increasingly confident in the ability to import machinery.

“Three years post-Brexit, rules and regulations are becoming easier to navigate. Our ability at Cheffins to provide the correct certification and also offer a wash-down service, allows buyers to purchase machinery at our sales with confidence.”

The next sale is on Monday 6 March at Cheffins Machinery Sale Ground, Sutton, Ely, Cambridgeshire, CB6 2QT.

Highlights of the sale included a 2003 John Deere 9520 (£90,500) [above], a 2019 John Deere 6175R (£80,000), a Case Puma 240 CVX (£72,000) and a Cat MTC875E (£72,000) [left]

Sales rising for tractors

The number of agricultural tractors (over 50hp) registered in the UK in January was 644 machines – nearly 30% higher than the figure for the same month last year and the highest total for the opening month of the year since 2019.

Registrations over the last four months are now 10% higher than they were a year before supply chain disruption caused by the pandemic.

Longer lead times for tractors and machines are starting to ease, says the Agricultural Engineers Association.

Tractors sell for up to £28,200 at farm dispersal sale

Machinery, implements and tractors – farmed by the same family for 46 years – sold for up to £28,200 at a successful dispersal sale on a Welsh border dairy farm.

Regional auctioneers Halls reported a buoyant trade and an enthuiastic large crowd for the auction held on 11 February for Richard and Helen Fairbanks at Bank Farm, Bulthy, Middletown, near Welshpool.

Auctioneer James Evans had a family connection with the farm because his father Jim sold it to the Fairbanks family in 1977. Having recently sold the 80ha farm Mr Evans said he was delighted to see such a large turnout and an excellent trade for the auction.

And he wished Mr and Mrs Fairbanks a long and happy retirement.

Sale results

Top prices were £28,200 for a 2020 Kubota M4072 4WD with 950 hours, £22,000 for a 2004 New Holland TS125A 4WD with 7,886hrs and £19,800 for a 2004 New Holland TS115A 4WD with 6240hrs.

Other highlights were £10,600 for a Mastek Slurry Mate reel and pipe, £7700 for a 2015 Spreada-Bale, £4600 each for a Kverneland Tarrup 8070, six rota tedder and an HTL electric foot trimming cattle crush.

A 10-tonne Richard Weston twin axle silage trailer went for £4400. Other sales includ-

ed £3900 for a Kuhn Axis 30.1 fertiliser spreader, £3000 for a 2005 Keenan 140 feeder wagon and £2700 for a front mounted Pottinger mower.

Mr Evans said the introduction of the MartEye online bidding platform for farm dispersal sales organised by Halls is paying dividends. Buyers are now being attracted from across the UK, Ireland and Europe, he explained.

“Attracting online bidders to

our farm dispersal sales ensures that farmers get the best possible price on the international market for their tractors, machinery and equipment,” added Mr Evans.

The next sales organised by Halls are for JW Holland, Decoy Farm, Babbinswood, Oswestry, on 25 March; the Shrewsbury Collective Machinery Sale at Shrewsbury Auction Centre on 14 April; and for Mr Jonathan Wilkinson, Dyffryn Meifod on 15 April.

Strautmann Magnon 8 forage wagon launched

Opico has introduced the Strautmann range of Magnon 8 forage wagons to the UK – just in time for the 2023 forage season.

A compact machine, the Magnon 8 has a loading capacity of 36m³ to 44m³ (DIN). It is the smaller sibling to the top of the range Magnon series and follows the 2019 rollout of the Magnon 10 range.

With a new moving front wall, the three models in the Magnon 8 series (370, 410 and 450) are aimed primarily at agricultural businesses and contractors with high demands, who are dependent on compact dimensions.

Increased capacity

When the wagon starts filling, the front wall is in a vertical position towards the rear of the wagon, but when chopped grass builds up and pushes against the tailgate sensor the front panel moves forward, in three stages, to increase capacity.

The movement of the front

discharging, the front wall is hydraulically moved to the rear of the machine to assist with unloading.

All Strautmann forage wagons benefit from a continuous flow system pick-up unit which ensures even loading with a low

tine change. The extra-wide, 2.25m, CFS pick up of the Magnon 8 ensures a wide swath of grass can be collected, which is particularly useful around corners, and means the outer edge of the rotor is kept full of forage to even out load-

an oil-bath gearbox to the rotor. The high (1000rpm) speed through the drive line is reduced to the rotor for both maximum torque and preservation of the drive line.

The Magnon 8 CFS 370 retails from £129,588 RRP

NH Delta is a technology that improves Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) stabilising nitrogen in the optimal amine form NH2, altering plant growth habit through the moderation of auxins and promotion of cytokinins from root development to maximise the yield to plant biomass ratio maintaining healthy plant structure helping the reduction of environmental losses of bagged N.

Available in combination with essential elements Ca (+B) or K (+Mn). Delta provides nitrogen in an amine form ready for immediate plant assimilation and use, it requires only half the plant energy for root uptake compared to nitrates.

Rapid test launches for barley disease

Arapid test to identify two of the most damaging diseases in barley before they’re visible will launch this month.

The SwiftDetect test from Microgenetics has already proved valuable in identifying diseases such as Septoria in wheat. The team has now developed new tests to identify net blotch and rhynchosporium in barley.

Net blotch has the potential to cause yield losses of 10-40% if it is not controlled and rhynchosporium, the most damaging disease affecting UK barley, can inflict several infection cycles during a single growing season.

Early warning

By identifying the presence of net blotch and rhynchosporium be-

fore they’re visible, farmers can act quickly to control either disease before they become a more serious problem.

“We decided to focus on these pathogens because they’re a particular concern for the British farming industry,” says Microgenetics principal scientist Rebec-

ca Sanders. “We know they cause the biggest crop yield failures and have the biggest financial impact

“By using SwiftDetect, farmers are given an early warning that treatment is necessary. It allows them to use it as part of their integrated crop management and spray according to what’s actual-

ly in the field, rather than a preemptive campaign.”

“It saves money. It saves the environment. And it prolongs the life of fungicides because, like antibiotics, the more fungicides we use, the more likely it is that pathogens will develop resistance to them.”

SwiftDetect is easy to use –farmers simply collect ten leaves from across a barley field for their sample and then post them to the SwiftDetect laboratory using prepaid envelopes that can be ordered from the Microgenetics website.

Results are returned quickly by email, usually by the next business day if not sooner.

A traffic light warning system will tell a farmer whether the sample was low, medium or high risk.

Spray cover assessment tool launched

Asimple-to-use spray coverage tool has been launched to make it easier for farmers and contractors to complete spray records.

Launched at Lamma by Metos UK, the portable DropSight on-site tool works with a mobile phone to give spray operators instant information on the spray deposition efficiency of the sprayer, helping to improve crop protection performance.

Good design award for Patriot

The Patriot 50 series sprayer from Case IH –which includes a center-section beacon light to help operators work safely – has scooped a top award.

The sprayer series won the 2022 Good design Award for its blend of connectivity, comfortable operator environment and complete machine control into what judges acknowledged is a reliable, triedand-true vehicle.

Presented by the Chicago Athenaeum in the USA, the award highlights and recognises the most innovative and cutting-edge industrial, product and graphic designs produced around the world.

“We are honoured and proud to be recognized, once again, with a Good Design Award; the oldest and most prestigious awards program organised world-

wide,” said Scott Harris, Case IH global president. “This award proves Case IH’s 2-century history commitment to serving farmers’ needs by providing innovative products and solutions to help them meet the challenges of today and growing demands of tomorrow.”

Each year since 1950, the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd. present the Good Design awards program celebrating the yearly achievements of design excellence.

Each submission is evaluated by a jury based on the following criteria established in 1950: innovative design, new technologies, form, materials, construction, concept function, utility, energy efficiency and sustainability.

Metos UK the software-based tool heps to reduce the risk of spray drift and run-off – as well as reducing the change of crops exceeding maximum residue limits.

Crops are first sprayed with a solution visible under ultra-violet light, then leaves are selected and photographed using a mobile phone. Special DropSight software then recognises and quantifies the deposition of solution on each leaf.

Solution depostits are then measured and used to calculates the deposition efficacy of the spray application.

By checking spray deposition during sprayer set-up, operators can optimise nozzle selection and calibration, water volume, adjuvant selection, boom height, and sprayer speed, for best results.

New features boost precision for sprayers

Accuracy and precision continue to evolve for Kverneland’s range of mounted and

trailed sprayers. It follows the development of several new features, all focused on harnessing technology.

Three new optional features launched by the company comprise SpotSpray; the introduction of a 25cm nozzle spacing option; and the next generation of Boom Guide ProActive boom height control.

SpotSpray technology is an extension of variable rate application maps. Such maps are already applicable to seed drills and fertiliser spreaders with task control.

Now the same principle can be applied to Kverneland sprayers with iXspray software when combined with iXflow Air/iXflow E individual nozzle control. Treatment maps can populated with a zero application rate in addition to a prescribed application rate.

By loading a treatment map into the control terminal, the sprayer automatically controls individual nozzles through the SpotSpray software and GPS, following only the indicated areas on the treatment map.

These maps could be used to define weed spots, wet areas, non-germination areas and parts of a field with known soil problems.

With the introduction of a 25cm nozzle spacing option, lower boom heights can be achieved to further reduce spray drift to a minimum.

Working at a reduced boom height of 30cm instead of 50cm, has been made possible with the latest generation of Boom Guide ProAc-

The Arian 2 Mounted Sprayer

cision and consistent boom control at higher forward speeds.

Kverneland sprayers include tractormounted iXter A and iXter B models, plus the ability to add capacity from an 1,100-litre iXtra front tank. An extensive line-up of iXtrack trailed models includes T3, T4 and T6 versions spanning 2,600-7,400 litres.

The announcement follows recent news regarding TAG’s expansion into Shropshire after the decision by Rea Valley Tractors (RVT) to relinquish the John Deere franchise. TAGs new 40,000 sq ft depot at Allscott near Telford is due to fully open this month.

TAG was formed in 2012 when John Deere dealerships Alexander & Duncan and Chris Tallis Farm Machinery joined forces. With roots going back to 1912, the company has supported farm businesses in the West Midlands for more than 100 years.

Mr Smith previously spent 27 years working for John Deere at

Langar, Nottinghamshire, latter ly as strategic account manager for the UK and Ireland.

TAG brands include Kramer, Pottinger, Sumo, Pichon, Shelbourne Reynolds, Sulky, AW & Bailey Trailers.

TAG managing director Ben Tallis said: “We have plans to double our turnover to £120m within four years.

“This appointment illustrates the ambition of the company and our desire to recruit first class people to help drive this journey.”
