For the first time, the farmer is now in control of the drilling programme even in adverse conditions. Patent approve in 2019, the Triton allows crop establishment in all weathers and into all soils, lifting the seeded zone by non-inversion vertical tillage to avoid seed rot and anaerobic seed beds.
Welcome to the 2023 edition of Farmer! – the yearbook and annual directory for agriculture across East Anglia and the Midlands.
Farming as a whole is likely to fare better than many other sectors over the coming year during what is set to be a challenging 12 months for the UK economy. In fact, the best farm businesses are likely to thrive –not just survive.
Rising interest rates, increases in farm input costs, political uncertainty and unpredictable weather will all make attention to detail, flexibility and resilience more important than ever when running a successful business during 2023.
Farm input costs rose by a whopping 34% over the last year, according to the latest figures from the AF Group, which compiles the annual AgInflation Index. Costs are set to remain stubbornly high in the year ahead – before showing signs of declining..
That said, some sectors have fared better than others. High prices for combinable crops, and a reasonable harvest given the summer drought meant many arable growers had a decent 2022 – especially those who purchased fertiliser before costs soared.
Livestock producers have been less fortunate. High grain prices mean high feed costs – and output values have lagged behind huge cost increases. Although pig prices have risen, for example, they are still too low to cover expensive input.
The coming year is set to be more challenging than 2022 – right across the board. While ag-inflation might slow, analysts suggest high input costs will
continue to squeeze margins – making it more difficult to maintain farm profits.
At the same time, many farmers will see a 35% reduction in financial support during 2023 as the government continues to phase out the Basic Payment Scheme – leaving affected businesses with little wriggle room.
There is no doubt that planning ahead should be prioritised.. With input prices changing on a daily basis – and sometimes more quickly than that – accurate budgeting and forecasting will have a big impact on farm margins this year.
This is particularly the case when it comes to imported inputs – including fertiliser, animal feed and crop protection products. As seen over the past year, volatile movements in the value of Sterling have a rapid effect on prices – and ultimately profitability.
Cash, in particular, will be in short supply – and more expensive due to higher interest rates. Yet high ag-inflation means more cash will be needed just to keep businesses running on a day-to-day basis. Then there is taxation on 2022 profits, which will also stretch working capital requirements on many farms.
Last summer’s heatwave is a stark reminder that farming’s fortunes are ultimately out of our control. But savvy farmers will seek to mitigate the worst impacts of uncertainty – by managing risk to ensure their businesses are best placed to seize opportunities when they arise.
As always, we wish our readers all the best for the 12 months ahead – it won’t be the easiest 12 months but together we will get through it.
Profitability between farm enterprises will vary hugely during 2023
There has seldom been such a wide variation in prospects for UK farm businesses, according to the latest edition of the John Nix Farm Management Pocketbook, which has just been published.
The new edition of the pocketbook provides farm management guidance and budgeting figures for 2023.
Dairy and arable farms may do very well from the higher milk and grain prices, but the grazing and intensive livestock sectors on balance stand to lose out, says Pocketbook author Graham Redman.
“This is an opportunity for some and a big concern for other farmers” says Mr Redman. “The range in budgeted margins is vast, depending on farm structure, enterprises and performance. Planning for the year and thinking about capturing the opportunities while mitigating the risks is vital in these particularly uncertain times”.
Mr Redman recommends carefully putting budgets together and working out what prices the farm system can operate at.
Lord Don Curry, the well-known agricultural statesman, who wrote the foreword to the new edition of the Pocketbook, points out that the amount of change in this industry is currently without parallel. Lord Curry cites the fundamental transformation in agricultural policy
– especially in England – towards the provision of public goods, which is met with trepidation in some sectors, especially hill farming.
Lord Curry also notes the slow burn changes from the emerging post-Brexit trade deals that may undercut domestic standards. The next big factor, he highlights is the war in Ukraine, with its dramatic impact on energy prices and blockade of ports, affecting grain and fertiliser markets unrecognisably, a topic that is discussed in the Pocketbook.
On a positive note, Lord Curry points out the recent government food strategy places increasing importance on UK-produced food.
A rise in production in some sectors might be hampered by labour shortages, but he identifies, recent research by The Institute for Agriculture and Horticulture suggests improved careers’ advice might help students consider this industry for themselves.
Despite all these challenges we face, the future is undeniably bright for many.
The Pocketbook has a series of wholefarm costings showing the profit and loss of key farm systems. It includes both figures from the average and the better performers summarised here. They demonstrate the wide variations in budgeted profitability in 2023 between sectors and farmer performances.
The table above illustrates the considerable range between farming types. It also shows the difference between average and best performance is considerable.
“To survive, let alone thrive, managers must be at the top
of their game in the years ahead.” says Mr Redman.
This table includes an allowance for the farmer’s time, other unpaid labour and land rent. The beef and sheep farms show a calculated loss, but the cash position is positive before imputed rent and unpaid labour. “There are opportunities for famers, but many may find it hard to grow their profit in the coming year” states Redman.
The book is updated for 2023 with over 100 enterprises for the year ahead, overheads, capital and other farming costs. The John
Nix Pocketbook gives a full guide to the new agricultural policies throughout all the UK, as well as interpreting trade patterns and the current agricultural economics.
It has new sections on carbon markets, regenerative farming, agroforestry, undersown barley, diversifications and for the first time, farm health and safety statistics. More details have been included such as for whole crop forage, straw in gross margins and typical stocking rate capacities for forage crops.
The Farm Management Pocketbook, with its reformatted layout, is designed to help farmers, students and other agribusiness professionals to understand their farms, the industry and the opportunities that it offers.
The pocketbook costs £32.00+P&P. To view the contents, see some sample pages and purchase a copy, please visit theandersonscentre.co.uk/shop/
Unlocking the environmental and income-generation potential of hedgerows in the British countryside is a step closer as the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) begins piloting the new Hedgerow Carbon Code.
The code will encourage hedgerow habitat improvements to increase the amount of carbon stored by hedges, contributing to British farming’s net-zero target and boosting biodiversity.
The GWCT says this will allow land managers to calculate and verify the carbon capture potential of their hedgerows, enabling them to trade carbon credits –a market with a potential value of £60m.
“We now have a trial Hedgerow Carbon
Code,” says Dr Alastair Leake, project lead and GWCT director of policy and the Allerton Project, a year on from receiving an £81.5k grant from the government’s Natural Environment Investment Readiness Fund.
“Pilots have begun with three arable farms in England, where we are evaluating the practicality of the code and the carbon calculation tool and developing it with the input of farmers on the ground.
“We are also looking at ways in which land managers who are already generating carbon and biodiversity benefits through good hedgerow management can be recognised and rewarded.”
The three-dimensional linear structure of hedges mean they sequester carbon at twice
The Hedgerow Carbon Code includes a tool that will enable the carbon stored in a hedge to be calculated and verified, incentivising land managers to plant and manage hedges – an important part of the government’s new Sustainable Farming Incentive.
The tool also has the potential to be developed to monitor hedgerow biodiversity for calculating biodiversity credits.
“Going forward, planting and managing hedgerows well will enable land managers to access the Sustainable Farming Incentive and open opportunities to generate income from carbon and biodiversity credit trading,” says Mr Leake. “That can only be good news for UK agriculture, climate change and wildlife.”
Development of the Hedgerow Carbon Code is being welcomed by the UK food
industry. Kellogg’s, as part of its Origins programme, has been working with the GWCT’s Allerton Project demonstration farm, where the code is being developed.
Duncan Rawson, from EFFP, which manages the Origins programme for Kellogg’s, says: “The Origins programme invests into sustainable farming practices, working with Kellogg’s farmers to help improve productivity and environmental performance, with a particular focus on climate change and biodiversity.
“Quantification of the on-farm sequestration of carbon is important to demonstrate the range of carbon benefits that agriculture can provide and to enable the food sector to meet carbon reduction ambitions.”
How the code will work
A new carbon code will enable farmers to generate an income from hedgerows
the rate of woodland and England’s hedges already store 9 million tonnes of carbon.
Similar to the Woodland Carbon Code, the new code will become the quality standard for hedgerows. It aims to generate hedgerow carbon credits, independently certified by Organic Farmers & Growers – who already do the same for woodland and peatland
“Many arable farms have old hedgerows which are no longer needed for their primary function of containing livestock, so there is little incentive to maintain them,” says Mr Leake. “But, if we can attach a value to them, through recognising their carbon sequestration and biodiversity benefits and rewarding farmers for these, then we could incentivise further hedgerow restoration.”
The UK government has set out its ambition for British agriculture to be zero-carbon by 2050. The NFU has a more ambitious target of 2040. Independent statutory body The Climate Change Committee says hedgerow planting can help reach that target.
Farmers will be paid for hedgerows under the Sustainable Farming Incentive
Advice on air and water quality is now available to farmers following the expansion of Defra’s Catchment Sensitive Farming programme.
Local Catchment Sensitive Farming advisers provide confidential on-farm support and advice to encourage the uptake of new and existing agricultural schemes and help farmers comply with rules to deliver environmental gains.
Some 24,000 farms have benefited from advice since 2006 – helping farmers combat pollution. This includes a 4% reduction in nitrogen levels, 8% reduction in phosphorus levels and a 12% reduction in sediment.
Advisers offer a range of support including signposting to relevant sources of advice, one-to-one tailored advice, including a visit from an agricultural specialist, or running group training and on-farm events.
The Catchment Sensitive Farming programme is led by Natural England, in partnership with Defra and the Environment Agency. It includes advice on rainwater harvesting, information on grants, potential cost savings and benefits to crop yields.
Natural England operations direction Jen Almond said: “We are rolling out Catchment Sensitive Farming advice to all farmers in England to help them produce food in a way that protects our water, air and soil whilst minimising losses and maximising efficiencies. Our advisers provide valuable advice on agricultural transition schemes and grants, natural flood management, and how sustainable farming practices can deliver the greatest environmental gains across the whole country.”
Some 83% of farmers who contact their catchment sensitive farming adviser agree they deliver trustworthy and useful advice, according to a survey last year..

An annual competition to recognise best practice in sprayer operation and applications is now open for entries.
The Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year Award (FSOOTY) gives sprayer operators clear recognition for their highly important role, as well as enhancing their continuous professional development and industry position.
It’s hugely rewarding for everyone to enter and great fun to be involved in the camaraderie between sprayer operators, says competition organiser and Syngenta application specialist Scott Cockburn.
“Everyone who enters has the same application challenges and frustrations, so there’s a huge amount to gain from sharing the solutions. Every year entrants find they learn something new from other operators and can improve the way they work.”
All finalists win a trip for two to Cereals 2023 and will be presented with their awards at the event. The overall winner claims a study tour to the awe inspiring AgriTechnica European farm machinery showcase event in
Hanover, Germany.
NFU deputy president and Essex farmer Tom Bradshaw has endorsed the award. He said: “There is ever greater scrutiny on the way we use plant protection products. It’s absolutely critical that we can demonstrate professionalism right through our industry.
“The competition is such a great opportunity for operators to demonstrate the ways that they maximise efficacy, the way they look after the environment and why they should be the Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year.”
FSOOTY 2022 award winner Steve May said there was a great feeling of pride that went with winning. He added: “Being recognised for working to a high standard of professionalism and competence was extremely rewarding for me.
“My initial goal was to test myself, to learn from others and to benchmark myself against other professional operators, as well as to keep moving forward and learning more. FSOOTY is a great way to learn from others, and to share your experiences.”
Mr May said more sprayer operators should enter FSOOTY to improve and share. Previous winners including Stuart Woods and Matt Redman had been inspirational in his approach to spraying, he said.
Operators can enter FSOOTY 2023 at www.syngenta. co.uk/fsooty. Farmers and agronomists can also nominate sprayer operators for entry on the Syngenta website. Entering FSOOTY automatically gains NRoSO points.
Operators will also be able to enter the competition on the Syngenta stand at LAMMA in January. Entries close on 11 January 2023.
The UK had the driest start to a year since the 1970s in 2022 – with large parts of southern England receiving less than 50% of their normal winter rainfall.
On top of that, southern England recently received just 17% of its average rainfall for July, in what was the country’s driest since 1935.
How the atmosphere circulates moisture is incredibly complex and so there is huge variability in rainfall from year to year. This makes it very difficult to conclude trends from past observations.
Temperature trends, meanwhile, are more straightforward: increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have raised average temperatures and made dry periods in Britain drier, as hotter weather evaporates more water.
Short and intense rainfall, which does not replenish parched soils, rivers and aquifers as well as gentler, longer showers, is also increasingly common as warmer air can hold more moisture.
Rivers with underlying acquifiers in southern England (such as chalk streams) can take months to respond to changes in rainfall. Projections by the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology suggest flows will potentially remain below average in these groundwater-fed rivers beyond autumn 2022.
Yet, the UK retains its reputation for being a rainy country.
A survey titled The Great British Rain
Paradox conducted in 2020 showed that 77% of the British public agreed with this sentiment. But with most of the UK forecast to have hotter and drier summers, it’s no longer as simple as that.
The UK has experienced regular periods of drought in the past, including the last official drought in 2018-19. The National Infrastructure Commission, which advises the government, warned then that the UK must do more to prepare for water shortages.
The Environment Agency estimates that water demand may outstrip supply across southern England in as short a timescale as 20 years if the country does not adapt to its new climate by building reservoirs and desalination plants.
So what does that new climate look like? The latest set of simulations project hotter and drier summers plus warmer and wetter winters, with larger changes in summer compared to winter rainfall.
Prolonged periods of below average river and groundwater levels are projected to become more severe. Summer droughts are likely to affect the entire country, while multi-year droughts are more likely across southern England.
There will be an increased risk of cascading hazards in future too, such as when a flood quickly follows a drought, spoiling crops and damaging infrastructure. Record rainfall in spring 2012 suddenly ended a drought which had begun in 2010, causing
flash floods which affected more than 4,000 properties.
How low rivers and public water supplies recede each summer will depend on rainfall in autumn and spring. There is less agreement between climate model simulations on how rainfall patterns will change in these seasons, which is when aquifers are usually replenished.
Water demand will add an additional strain on these sources as the population grows, particularly as severe heatwaves are set to become much more common.
Severe droughts in the UK’s past have always included one or more dry winters, such as 1975-76, 1988-93 and 2010-12. The severity of future droughts will be determined by how sequences of dry seasons interact.
Research has shown that the probability of a dry winter and spring being followed by an extremely hot summer, like the one the UK is experiencing in 2022, is now at least five times more likely compared with the 1970s. A drier than average winter is much more likely to be followed by a dry summer too.
Although winters are projected to become wetter on average, scientists aren’t sure how the sequencing of dry seasons is changing. This is due to uncertainty around the influence of climate change on atmospheric circulation, such as the position and strength of the jet stream – a major driver of heatwaves and dry weather in the UK.
Where the rain ends up falling also matters. The northwest of the UK, including Northern Ireland, receives more rain than the southeast. So a wet winter nationally could still mean drier than average conditions in the southeast.
Water companies cannot discount the possibility of consecutive dry winters and the potential for three consecutive dry winters are particular concern. This was narrowly avoided in the 2010-2012 drought, but research has revealed that continued dry conditions in 2012 would have meant critically low river flows across southern England.
Water companies must develop regional plans for transferring water to meet public need and boost efficiency in homes and businesses through smart metering and
Irrigation is set to become even more important to agriculture
reckon with the ways drought will make food production, biodiversity conservation and even electricity generation (as a result of
cooling water shortages and reduced hydroelectricity) more difficult.
Droughts will have major implications for the country’s national food strategy, its nature recovery targets and – critically – progress towards net zero emissions, which will be essential for bringing extreme weather under control.

Winter rainfall is unlikely to prevent drought conditions lasting well into the coming year. Projections suggest average rainfall levels during the winter of 2022/23 will be insufficient to avoid impending drought or drought conditions continuing for some time.
The warning was issued by the National Drought Group which includes representatives from the government, Environment Agency, water companies, the farming industry and environmental groups.

If rainfall is below average, many water companies suggest impending drought or drought conditions could remain beyond spring – most notably in East Anglia, the East Midlands, south-east England, parts of the south-west and Yorkshire.
Action is needed now on water, says James Bevan

Some water companies expect supplies to recover in some regions to either normal or recovering conditions by spring with average rainfall – but others forecast that some areas will remain in
The drought group said action was needed during the autumn and winter months to sustain essential water supplies in preparation for spring and summer 2023. This included the implementation of water company drought plans.
The Environment Agency said it would manage abstraction licences, take decisions on drought permits and operate its water transfer schemes. Meanwhile, water companies will accelerate infrastructure plans to improve the resilience of supplies.
Agriculture involves a difficult balance between food production and environmental impact. For example, fertilisers can help to achieve good crop yields, but over-using them produces greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.
Some of these impacts also threaten future agricultural production. Greenhouse gas emissions, for instance, contribute to climate change and increase the likelihood of extreme weather events.
To sustain agriculture, then, it is necessary to minimise the use of inputs like fertilisers, and support crop growth in other ways. One approach is through increasing
ecological functioning within farms. This means enhancing relationships between different on-farm organisms, including crops, livestock, microbes, and wild plants and animals. Using these relationships to support crop yields is called “ecological intensification”.
Previous research has shown that ecological intensification can be effective. But studies have only been done over short timescales of just a few years, whereas the effects of agricultural practices often take longer to become clear. Variation in weather between years can obscure effects in the short term, and some ecological processes take several years to stabilise.
In a recent study, my colleagues and I explored whether long-term studies also support ecological intensification. To answer this, we sought out 30 long-term experiments from around Europe and Africa. We used these experiments to look at whether ecological intensification could reduce the need for two inputs: nitrogen fertiliser and tillage.
We found that ecological intensification can partly replace fertilisers to support crop yields, because both ecological intensification and fertilisers increase soil nutrients. So farmers could use ecological intensification to reduce fertiliser use while
maintaining the same yields. Farmers who already used low or no fertiliser could increase their yields.
Ecological intensification could also increase yields whether farmers were ploughing or using no-till farming. This was because tillage and the ecological practices we tested had different functions, and contributed to crop yields in different ways.
Overall, ecological intensification can help balance food production and environmental impacts by reducing high fertiliser use without reducing yields. And it can supplement low inputs to boost yields in poor, remote communities where inputs are expensive or hard to access.
We selected experiments that had been running for 10 years or more. We made an exception to include two nine-year-old experiments to increase representation of smallholder farming practices in our dataset.
The 30 experiments in our study tested different practices in a diverse range of
climates, soil types and farming systems. We looked for common trends across experiments. In particular, we wanted to know how ecological practices and input use interacted. Was it better to combine multiple ecological practices and inputs, or were they most effective when used independently?
Within our dataset, there were three classes of ecological practices and two types of inputs tested frequently enough to include in our analysis.
The ecological practices were:
• crop diversification – rotating crops or planting different crops close to each other
• including fertility crops such as forage or ground covers rather than staple food crops
• organic matter management – like using compost or manure to fertilise crops, and retaining crop residues on the field to cycle nutrients.
Ecological intensification entails replacing or augmenting inputs. So we compared the effects on crop yields of increasing the three ecological practices against the effects of decreasing two inputs: synthetic nitrogen
We found that ecological intensification can partly replace fertilisers to support crop yields
“
fertiliser and tillage intensity. Fertiliser provides the nitrogen that crops need to grow, but can also cause pollution. Intensive tillage (or ploughing) removes weeds but can increase soil erosion.
Our results showed that ecological practices usually increased yields when added to a farming system. However, the benefits of crop diversification, fertility crops and adding organic matter were typically high when synthetic nitrogen fertiliser use was low. Often there was no benefit when nitrogen fertiliser use was high.
This showed us that you can use either an ecological practice or a nitrogen fertiliser to increase yields. But if you use both together, the effect is the same as using either one.
We deduced that this is because the practices and the fertiliser have the same main function: all provide nitrogen to the crop. Crop diversification and fertility crops often involve adding legumes to the system. Plants such as beans, peas and clovers fix atmospheric nitrogen and add it to the soil. Manures and composts release nitrogen from decomposing plant material or livestock wastes.
Sometimes we observed small extra benefits of using an ecological practice alongside high nitrogen. For example, adding manures and composts still increased yields when nitrogen was high. Other research has shown that these organic matter additions help to improve soil structure and microbial activity. They can also contribute to soil water retention and the cycling of other nutrients.
Using two ecological practices together was generally beneficial, because each provides different functions.
Similarly, using ecological practices together with inputs can increase yields when their functions do not overlap. This can be achieved, for example, by using fertiliser in small amounts to top up the nutrients provided by ecological practices.
We also found that diversifying with non-
legume crops under high nitrogen had a yield benefit. It is likely due to the interruption of weed, pest and disease cycles.
In our study, tillage did not strongly interact with ecological practices, suggesting that each had different functions. This means that farmers can adapt their tillage practices to their environment independently from their decisions on using diversification, fertility crops and organic matter.
Ecological intensification could be a way to distribute fertiliser more equitably to improve global food security while minimising environmental impacts. Currently, average fertiliser rates in Africa are a small fraction of those in Europe. Smallholders in particular use much less than their fair share. Too much fertiliser causes environmental impacts, but too little fertiliser makes it difficult to produce enough food.
Other studies have suggested that if fertiliser use is reduced where it is currently high (such as large commercial farms in developed countries), then fertiliser use could be increased where it is currently very low (smallholder farmers in developing countries), without overloading global ecosystems with nitrogen pollution.
Our study shows how ecological intensification could help to achieve this.

After many years trying to find a solution for dirty water we have found a cost effective solution, not only is the system simple it also has a low power requirement.
This new system comes with a low capital cost, and with ease of use it suits all types of terrain. It also allows slow application rates to match ground infiltration. The system is modular so it is also easy to expand.
The system operates at 2-4 bar pressure using a 4mm-6mm Size Sprinkler Nozzle this gives an output of 0.8 to 1.1 m3 per hour per sprinkler with a diameter of 20-24mt therefore applying 3-4mm per hour. The system is designed for clean or dirty water with large solids being removed by the WrootWater Super Simple Filter, removing all particles above 2mm, it is also self-cleaning so relatively low maintenance and trouble free.
The Sprinkler we use to spread the water after the filter is the famous K-Line system from New Zealand. This is a modular sprinkler system used mainly for irrigating grass as it is easy to manage and is economical with very few moving parts so there is very little to go wrong. We think we now have the winning system that is both economical and easy to use. We are now also offering the larger K-line Pods with Sprinklers to handle larger solids as these come with nozzles up to 12mm in diameter.
