FOREWORD
Long term approach is best for challenging year ahead
W
elcome to the 2024 edition of Farmer! – the yearbook and annual directory for agriculture across East Anglia and the Midlands. It’s well known in agricultural circles that our industry tends to be more resilient than many business sectors – a fact which will stand many family farming enterprises in good stead during the year ahead and beyond. Although the wider economy downturn appears to be easing, it is clear that the business climate will remain challenging for some time to come. When it comes to food and farming, consumers are feeling the pinch as well as producers. The last 12 months have seen a decline in commodity prices. This has posed a serious challenge for many growers and livestock producers whose output during 2023 was generated using inputs purchased when prices peaked in 2022. Thankfully, the past year has also seen a welcome fall in overall farm inputs costs – albeit slowly. Average input costs fell by 4.7% during the year ending 30 September 2023, according to the AF Group aginflation index. But as the group points out, this is only a small fraction of a more complicated story. Electricity costs fell by 58% during the year, followed by fertiliser (-49%) and fuel (-15%). But farm office operating costs – including rent and interest – increased by more than 11%. At the same time, crop protection costs were up by almost 10%. Farming might be resilient but it is still affected by global events. Two years ago,
the conflict in Ukraine caused a major spike in input costs. Now the conflict between Israel and Hamas threatens to do the same. Israel is a major exporter of both phosphate and potash. So it is no suprise that upwards pressure on fertiliser prices – and some nervousness in the market – has already been seen in the last quarter of 2023 and is set to continue into 2024.
“
Farming might be resilient but it is still affected by global events. Natural gas prices have also risen. That increase is partly seasonal but it is also driven by global uncertainty and conflict. As a result, markets are harder to forecast, making it important to be on top of the numbers when it comes to farm budgets. Additional options available under the government’s Sustainable Farming Incentive will do little to ease the pressure on farm incomes. While useful, savvy farmers will also be looking to other alternative sources of revenue. But it isn’t all doom and gloom. The best producers will still be able to make a decent living – although it will be more difficult to do so. Innovation, forward-planning – and perhaps a little bit of luck – will be needed to optimise those all important margins. As always, we wish our readers all the best for the 12 months ahead.

FARM POLICY
Land prices to ease as industry restructures by Johann Tasker
F
armland sales are expected to ease during 2024 as the industry continues to restructure following changes to agricultural support. The amount of farmland being openly marketed could well increase as farmers make more informed decisions about the future of their business, says Will Radbourne, part of the rural agency team at Savills. “It is now clearer what the new agri-environment schemes such as Environmental Land Management and the Sustainable Farming Scheme will require or incentivise – and the degree of financial reward these will provide,” says Mr Radbourne. With the Basic Payment Scheme formally abolished on 1 January, farmers will continue to receive de-linked payments on a sliding scale until 2027 when the phase-out of the scheme will be complete.
Informed decisions
“Consequently, farmers can now make more informed decisions about the future of their business and property, which in some instances may involve retirement and sale,” says Mr Radbourne. Economic factors are also playing a part in decisions to sell-up, “High costs of production combined with increased interest rates have put a strain on some businesses, perhaps accelerating retirement plans,” Mr Radbourne explains. Average farmland values in eastern

England have continued to increase year on year – with prime arable land trading at an average of £10,404 an acre in the three months to 30 September 2023 – up 3% since September 2022. The value of all types of eastern region farmland – arable and pasture – was sitting at an average of £9,605 an acre. This was 5.0% up on the same time in 2022, but a drop of 3.0% in three months.
Local variation
Oliver Carr, associate director in the rural agency team for Savills covering west Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, said a number of factors were impacting values and they remained highly localised. “This has largely been driven by continued pent-up demand from buyers motivated by business asset rollover relief and natural capital investors which have so far insulated the market from wider economic factors and sustained overall value growth. “There is a lot of variation depending on location, land grade and farm type.” For some, farmland competition is also beginning to weaken where the pool of buyers has reduced following acquisitions by those with rollover relief funds and as Landowners are weighing up new agri-environment schemes, says Will Radbourne.
Range of farming grants due to re-open
A
number of machinery, technology and productivity grants are expected to re-open during early 2024 – including grants for farm equipment. They include the Farming Equipment and Technology Fund (FETF) – similar to the old Countryside Productivity Small Grants scheme, says Tom Cheer, agricultural business consultant at Brown & Co. “It aims to improve productivity and efficiency on farm. Applications are online, selecting items from an eligible list and getting paid a fixed amount of grant no matter how much is spent on the item.”
Expected opening
So far, there have been two rounds of the FETF. The third round is expected to open during winter 2023/24. Previous rounds have seen grants available for items such as direct drills and weeders – with further items expected to be added in future. The grant helps farmers to access more technical machinery at a lower cost. The investors take advantage of guaranteed rates of return from bank interest rates. Interest rates are affecting financing costs meaning neighbouring landowners may find it difficult to fund purchases, said Mr Carr.
Increased supply
“Levels of supply have also started to increase, with more opportunities to purchase larger-scale commercial farms this year, while at the other end of the scale, higher interest rates have triggered some smaller-scale sales to raise capital.” Quarterly analysis, which looks at publicly marketed farmland across the East
list of eligible items varies from round to round but is usually expanded over time, with some items occasionally removed, says Mr Cheer. “The maximum grant is £25,000 but farmers can choose as many items as they like to meet this amount. It is worth bearing in mind that for each item, a minimum specification must be met, which the Rural Payments Agency is incredibly strict about.” There is also the Animal Health and Welfare aspect of the FETF to consider and larger grants under the Farming Transformation Fund. They cover water management, reservoirs and irrigation equipment; slurry infrastructure; adding value and productivity. The Farming Transformation Fund grant process involves an expression of interest followed up by a full application. Previous grants have accounted for 40% of equipment costs from £35,000 to £500,000 with 60% match funding from the farmer. Midlands, shows that some 14,276 acres of farmland were marketed in the nine months to the end of September 2023 – an increase of 129% on the same period in 2022. This included 5,398 acres in Lincolnshire, 4,274 acres in Northamptonshire, 1,284 acres in Leicestershire, 1,192 acres in Derbyshire, 1,118 acres in Nottinghamshire and 1,011 acres in Rutland. Overall, the average value of all land types in the Midlands – incorporating varying qualities of arable and pasture – sat at £8,200 an acre as of September 2023, a 4.6% increase on the same time in 2022.

FORECAST
Partial recovery forecast for arable farm profits • Net margin better than expected • Well below 2021 and 2022 level • Opportunity to optimise margins
F
arm profits for arable units are set to make a partial recovery in 2024 – but are still likely to remain lower than they were a few years ago. Farm business consultants at Strutt & Parker have updated their arable farm profitability model using current market data to produce revised forecasts for harvest 2023 and harvest 2024. The modelling tool provides two sets of figures: one set for an average-performing business and a second set for a higherperforming business, typically characterised
by higher crop yields with lower fixed costs. Analysis shows that the net margin can be considered to be the equivalent of profit before rent and finance. Strutt & Parker farm business consultant Tom Coate says: “We have updated our assumptions based on current market conditions.”
Performance
The net margin for an average-performing arable farm for harvest 2024 is expected to be £258/ha. This compares with an estimated net margin of £208/ha for harvest 2023. Meanwhile, the 2024 net margin for a higher-performing farm business is forecast to be £475/ha. This compares with £416/ha in 2023. “Estimated profits for 2023 and 2024
How the forecast was made Strutt & Parker analysts used the following assumptions to produce forecasts for harvest 2023 and harvest 2024.
Variable costs
Farm output and income
* Variable costs are the same for both the average and higher performing farms, with the higher yields coming from using inputs more effectively.
* Crop yields for higher-performing farms are 9t/ha for winter wheat and 3.1t/ha for winter oilseed rape (compared with 8t/ha and 2.7t/ ha for average-performing business).
* For 2023, an average fertiliser price of £600/t has been assumed, based on a June 2022 price of £625/t, which increased significantly, but then dropped back in spring 2023.
* An average sale price for harvest 2023 wheat of £200/t and £240/t for spring barley.
* For 2024, the fertiliser price is based on an average price across the year of £380/t (increased from the £340/t originally budgeted in June). Although there was a new season ammonium nitrate (AN) price of £320/t, prices have been increasing since June 2023 and not all farmers have the luxury of storage and cash flow to buy early.
* For 2024, wheat price remains at £200/t and spring barley price reduced to £200/t. * Agri-environment income is budgeted to increase by 30% for Harvest 2023 compared to the baseline of 2021 and by a further 10% for harvest 2024, due to increased options released for SFI attracting more farmers into agreements. 8 Farmer! 2024 Directory
* Spray costs have increased by around 20% since 2022 but it is anticipated that no further

are higher than the forecasts we made in June, which will be welcome news as the Basic Payment continues to reduce. But net margins remain well below 2021 and 2022 levels and much closer to where they were in the late 2010s.” Figures for the high-performing businesses emphasise the value for
significant price rises will be seen for the 2024 harvest. * Red diesel has been estimated at an average of £0.85p/litre for 2024 following increases in natural gas prices and crude oil.

growers of drilling down into the detailed performance of their business to find where there may be opportunities to cut costs or improve efficiency.
Understanding costs
“The estimated net margin of the higherperforming business for harvest 2023 is twice that of an average-performing business (£208/ha vs £416/ha) – and it is forecast to be 84% higher for harvest 2024 (£258/ha vs £475/ha),” says Mr Coate. “While this is not a new message, it once again highlights the benefits of growers understanding their costs of production and monitoring fixed costs.” “Working capital requirements for farms, which are variable and fixed costs, have risen by 40% to £173,604 in 2023 for an average performing 131 ha farm, compared with the 2021 baseline. “We expect this to reduce in 2024 but still remain 28% higher than the baseline. This puts extra pressure on a farm’s cashflow and finance requirements.”
* Property and machinery maintenance costs are estimated to have risen by 20% in 2023 and by 30% by 2024 (again both percentages are based on a comparison with the 2021 baseline). * Working capital figures per farm are based on a typical cereals farm which has 131 hectares of arable crops in a typical rotation.

AWARDS
Win a trip to Agritechnica in Germany
F
arm sprayer operators have a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to the Agritechnica machinery show in Germany by entering a key competition. The Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year Award (FSOOTY) recognises best practice in sprayer operation and applications. Sponsored by Syngenta, the competition is now open for entries. The accolade recognises the highly important role of sprayer operators – as well as enhancing their continuous professional development and industry position, says competition organiser and Syngenta application specialist Scott Cockburn. “Everyone who enters has the same application challenges and frustrations, so there’s a huge amount to gain from sharing the solutions. Every year entrants find they learn something new from other operators and can improve the way they work.”
Trip to Germany
All finalists win a trip for two to Cereals 2024 where they will be presented with their awards. The overall winner claims a study tour to the Agritechnica European farm machinery showcase in Hanover, Germany. NFU deputy president and Essex farmer Tom Bradshaw has endorsed the award. He said: “There is ever greater scrutiny on the way we use plant protection products. It’s absolutely critical that we can demonstrate professionalism right through our industry. “The competition is such a great opportunity for operators to demonstrate the ways that they maximise efficacy, the way they look after the environment and why they should be the Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year.” 10 Farmer! 2024 Directory
Northamptonshire sprayer operator Mark Jelley is the current holder of the award.
Last year
FSOOTY 2023 winner Mark Jelley has been operating sprayers for 45 years. He uses a Chafer Interceptor self-propelled sprayer across 1500ha of combinable crops on the farm’s own land, plus an additional 500ha of contract farming. Judges praised Mr Jelley’s approach to progressing the skills of his fellow operators on the farm. This includes sharing information and best practice to ensure they all work in the same way, which leads to consistently better results. “Entering FSOOTY is a good way to measure and further your knowledge, and to keep on learning,” said Mr Jelley, who undertakes frequent work-based training, and takes the opportunity to increase his knowledge in his own time.
TO ENTER THE AWARD
Operators can enter FSOOTY 2024 at www.syngenta.co.uk/fsooty. Farmers and agronomists can also nominate sprayer operators for entry on the Syngenta website. Entering FSOOTY automatically gains NRoSO points. Operators will also be able to enter the competition on the Syngenta stand at LAMMA in January. Entries close on 18 January 2024.

Farmers asked to restore nature – but changes are likely to be superficial By Elise Wach
T
he UK government has pledged to restore 500,000ha of wildlife-rich habitat, create or expand 25 national parks, invest in the recovery of hedgehogs and red squirrels, tackle rising sewage pollution and improve access to green spaces in England Since 69% of land in England is farmed, much of the plan’s success in improving nature will hinge on its reform of the country’s agricultural sector. Farming is implicated in the extinction risk of 86% of threatened species globally, and accounts for roughly one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change, not to mention soil erosion and river pollution. The government has described the plan as an “ambitious road map” to a cleaner, greener country. Some of the targets certainly are ambitious. For example, the plan aims to bring 40% of farmland soils into sustainable management by 2028. This would be a monumental shift in how soil is cared for in England. Intensive agriculture has slashed the amount of carbon soils store by 60% and put 6 million hectares across England and Wales at risk of erosion or compaction, costing an estimated £1.2 billion a year. But the plan doesn’t actually explain how sustainable management will be expanded. The only action proposed is to create a “baseline map” of soil health in England by 2028. The plan also aims for 65%-80% of 12 Farmer! 2024 Directory
landowners and farmers to adopt naturefriendly farming by 2030. Nature-friendly farming is not defined, nor is it based on any internationally recognised principles – making it impossible to assess the government’s progress. The plan only aims for this to be adopted on 10%-15% of farmers’ land too, which would amount to a mere 6%–12% of England’s farmland overall. Research shows that protecting small pockets of land won’t benefit biodiversity if the majority of farming in the surrounding landscape is ecologically destructive.
All carrots, no sticks
The main instrument the government has chosen to shake up agriculture is the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) scheme. This pays farmers for actions which benefit the environment. For example, a farmer could receive up to £40/ha for their efforts to improve soils on arable fields. An integrated strategy for converting farmland to more sustainable management would mean increasing the diversity of crops grown, helping healthy soils regenerate and eliminating pesticides, all at the same time. Instead, SFI payments reward farmers for making standalone changes. This might mean putting out seeds for birds in winter or leaving a grassy strip on an unused section of land to provide habitat for insects, though it could also mean significantly cutting down on pesticides. This system offers flexibility for
The government wants 30% of land protected for the environment by 2030
landowners, but research shows that farmers are more likely to choose environmental improvements which don’t require significant changes to how they farm. This is the fatal flaw in the government’s flagship farming reform. Farmers can continue doing things which harm soils and wildlife on the (majority) productive parts of their land while receiving benefits for sprinkling pro-environment measures around the edges. Wildflower margins which are planted around pesticide-soaked crops under the pretence of supporting pollinators offer a common example. Not only is the continued use of pesticide on the crop harmful in itself, the wildflowers accumulate the chemical residue, sometimes in higher concentrations than in the crops themselves. This renders the wildflower pollen harmful, rather than beneficial, to bees, butterflies and other bugs. The environment improvement plan heavily relies on voluntary participation in lieu of regulation, not only through SFIs but quality assurance schemes such as Red Tractor. For example, fertilisers and slurries emit ammonia, a greenhouse gas which is bad for human health. Rather than regulate this, the plan favours an industry-led approach with Red Tractor certifications.
Red Tractor is yet another voluntary scheme, and has been criticised as ineffectual for encouraging improvements to the environment and animal welfare on farms. The plan has only suggested that it will consider regulating dairy and intensive beef farms in the same way that it regulates intensive poultry and pig farms. Even if regulations were to be expanded, environmental regulators visit farms so rarely and superficially that it might not make a difference. On average, it is estimated that English farms can expect an environmental inspection once every 263 years. Despite being regulated, intensive poultry and pig operations are a major cause of river pollution.
Beyond England’s borders
In post-Brexit policy discussions, some landowners and consumers worried that payments for environmental improvements would outweigh income from food production, meaning less homegrown fare. Government discourse has since emphasised that farmers will receive support to deliver on environmental outcomes “alongside” food production. Nothing in the plan ensures this. Other countries have a food policy which guides farmers to grow produce necessary >> for healthy diets and determines how Farmer! 2024 Directory 13
ENVIRONMENT >> much should be imported or exported. Responsibility for food in England is divided between 16 different departments, with no overarching framework or body. The SFI and the new plan do very little to stem the environmental consequences of food produced beyond England’s borders. The aggregate ammonia emissions from crops and livestock imported into England are significantly higher than those stemming from domestic production. And despite its favourable growing conditions, the majority of fruit and vegetables eaten in England are imported, contributing to water scarcity and pollution in other countries.
Preserving the environment at home while polluting and degrading environments abroad is nonsensical, as all ecosystems are interconnected. But it is also shameful to shift the environmental burden of English diets onto other people. If the government and citizens are serious about improving the environment, then policies must require that ecological principles are integrated into food production. At present, voluntary measures and weak regulation are all that is offered. Elise Wach is a research advisor at the Institute of Development Studies. This article was first published on theconversation.com.
What is the plan and why is it important? The Environment Improvement Plan for England sets out the government’s key policies, funding and incentives for the environment – mostly through changes in land use and management. Due to be published every five years, the first update to the original 2018 plan was announced last year. The EIP23 also includes interim targets for 2028 and details of the government policies to support the changes. The plan sets out how England will: • Ensure thriving plants and wildlife • Enhance environmental quality (clean air, clean water, managing chemicals and pesticides) • Improve the use of resources (minimise waste and use natural resources sustainably) • Help mitigate the impacts of climate change (adapting to climate change challenges and reducing environmental hazards) • Improve biosecurity • Enhance beauty, heritage and engagement with the natural environment The plan reiterates the government’s 14 Farmer! 2024 Directory
legal obligations to protect 30% of our land and sea by 2030. It also confirms that the government will publish a Land Use Framework – outlining how much of England’s land will be used for different purposes. As well as improvements to the environment, the plan presents targets for food production and other land uses in rural areas. To achieve these, significant changes to farming practices will be required – including increased public funds through support schemes. The plan sets out a goal for 70% of agricultural land, and 70% of farm holdings, to be part of a farming scheme by 2028. It also sets out that 65-80% of landowners and farmers will adopt naturefriendly farming on at least 10-15% of their land by 2030. To achieve this, the plan confirms the government’s introduction of the Environmental Land Management (ELM) schemes and a one-year extension of the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) programme, with an additional £10m in funding. Oxford Farming Conference unveils speakers for 2024
O
utspoken environmentalist and former Defra non-executive director Ben Goldsmith is among the speakers at the 2024 Oxford Farming Conference. A controversial figure among farmers for his views on agricultural support subsidies and the impact of livestock on the environment, Mr Goldsmith will participate in the Oxford Farming Conference debate at the Oxford Union. He will propose the motion that this house believes farming for food is holding back nature recovery in the UK’s protected landscapes. Cumbrian hill farmer Will Cockbain will lead the opposition to the motion.
Headline speakers
Taking place on 3-5 January, the OFC24 programme includes more than 30 headline speakers – among them farmer and musician Andy Cato; Westmorland food service chair Sarah Dunning; and chef, broadcaster and writer Romy Gill. Mixed arable and livestock farmer Mr Cato is co-founder of Wildfarmed, a food brand which pays a premium for regeneratively grown wheat. Pig & Poultry Fair set for Birmingham
T
he British Pig & Poultry Fair moves to a new venue for 2024 – making its debut at the NEC Birmingham. Taking place on 15-16 May, the biennial fair is highly valued by the sectors and the importance of bringing the industry together has been proven over many years, said organiser Alice Bell, of the Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE). “Feedback from the 2022 fair demonstrated that despite the challenging market conditions, it was highly beneficial to get producers and suppliers together to share ideas and see what is new.” The 2022 fair hosted 338 exhibitors, occupied over 18,000m2 of event space and welcomed more than 7,500 visitors across the two days. But Ms Bell said the event had struggled to obtain the amount of quality space needed. To deliver the two-day show in a format that works and with the content the industry required, the RASE secured the only centrally located venue which could facilitate its future needs – the NEC at Birmingham. “With a third of the space from 2022 no longer available for 2024 and beyond, we were left with the choice of significantly compromising the event or moving venue,” said Ms Bell.

We really need to support one another, to be transparent about what does and doesn’t work.” The wider conference programme includes more than 100 sessions on agroecology, regenerative agriculture, organic farming and fairer food systems. Speakers include Lord Deben who will discuss ways family farms can help tackle climate change.

Groundswell more popular than ever, say host farmers
T
he Groundswell event promises to be more popular than ever in 2024, with a jam-packed programme for everyone interested in regenerative agriculture. Entering its ninth year, Groundswell takes place on 26-27 June at Lannock Manor Farm, near Hitchin, Hertfordshire. It provides a forum for farmers interested in food production and the environment to learn about the theory and practical applications soil health, reduced tillage and cover crops. The two-day event featuring talks, forums and discussions from leading international soil health experts, experienced arable and livestock farmers, agricultural policy experts, direct-drill demonstrations and agri-tech innovators. Anna Jackson is filmed by Colin Ramsay
The central Groundswell theme is soil health – and how to improve it
Aimed at all types of farmers, Groundswell was founded by the Cherry family on their mixed farm in Hertfordshire. Brothers John and Paul Cherry have farmed for more than 30 years, converting to a notill system in 2010. Groundswell continues to go from strength to strength – welcoming more than 6,500 visitors in 2023. This growth reflects increasing interest in regenerative agriculture – and the benefits of such systems in terms of carbon sequestration and flood prevention. “Despite these other interest groups, Groundswell remains a show for farmers, by farmers,” says Paul. “We aim to explore ways of working with nature to grow food in a profitable way.”

Harnessing the advantages of no-till to the advantages of vertical tillage The Triton side-press seed drill stands alone at the cutting edge of versatile crop establishment. For the first time, the farmer is now in control of the drilling programme even in adverse conditions. Patent approve in 2019, the Triton allows crop establishment in all weathers and into all soils, lifting the seeded zone by non-inversion vertical tillage to avoid seed rot and anaerobic seed beds.

Five misused farming phrases – and what they really mean By Emma Garnett
M
any words we use come with hidden baggage. For instance we tend to assume that local, natural and grass-fed foods are good for our health, the environment and animal welfare, while intensive farming is bad for these things. However, the evidence often doesn’t bear this out. Here are five terms about food which we need to use more precisely.
1. Local
Every environmentally-damaging activity is local to somewhere. However, many assume lower “food miles” always means “better for the environment”. When it comes to greenhouse gas emissions, what you eat matters much more than where it’s come from. Although transport is a key sector for climate change, transporting food from farms to us (“food miles”) makes up on average only 6% of products’ total carbon footprint. Very little food is air freighted, which has high emissions and should be avoided. Most travels by boat, rail and lorry, with much lower emissions per km. Of course, all other things being equal, fewer food miles means fewer emissions, and there are other reasons people
Food miles are only part of the story 24 Farmer! 2024 Directory
might wish to purchase local produce. Shifting how people travel matters much more than food miles. If you want to reduce emissions from transport, helping yourself and others cut out flying or taking the bus instead of driving will make a much bigger difference than not buying ship-freighted bananas.
2. Intensive
“Intensive” is rarely used in a positive context for farming. People tend to associate it with low animal welfare, pollution and faceless corporations. But there are lots of different ways to farm intensively, and it is worth asking what sort of inputs are being referred to. Do we mean lots of human workers? High energy and electricity use? High fuel use? High pesticide use? Are we considering input levels in terms of per hectare, per tonne of produce, per 1,000 calories? Many fruits, vegetables and other produce, from strawberries to mushrooms to vanilla, rely on manual labour for harvesting. However these types of produce are farmed, they are highly labour-intensive compared to arable crops which can be gathered by fewer people operating combine harvesters and tractors/trailers. Organic crops are often used as an opposite example to “intensive” farms. They use fewer pesticides and so are less intensive in that respect. However, organic farming tends to have more intensive fuel and machinery use to mechanically break up weeds without herbicides, or extra human labour to control weeds manually. Intensive farming is often used as shorthand for high-yield farming – that is, farming that produces more food per hectare. Land efficiency in food production is generally viewed positively. High yielding
4. Grass-fed
Grass-fed is generally viewed positively. However, grass-fed beef and lamb has a huge carbon and land footprint compared to pork, chicken and protein rich plants such as peas, beans and lentils. In many countries most grass-fed livestock are also fed crops. This means the meat they produce can use more cropland – cropland alone, before even considering pasture land – per kilo than peas or beans.
5. Natural
Grass-fed beef comes with a big carbon footprint compared to other protein sources
farm systems, with low pollution, soil loss and so on per tonne of produce, are arguably the main way we can feed the world with the least environmental damage. The alternative to intensive high-yield farming is extensive low-yield farming, which ironically requires much more land. Land which could instead be used for reforestation, wetlands, solar or wind farms, housing or parks.
3. Industrial
Similar to “intensive”, this is almost universally used negatively with respect to animal welfare, sustainability and farming. The suggestion is that agriculture prior to the industrial revolution was always sustainable. But this is not the case. Ancient and modern farming systems can both significantly damage the land and wild ecosystems. Farmers in the Roman empire seriously damaged their soils. Norse settlers in Iceland deforested the landscape for their crops and livestock, which led to widespread loss of the island’s erosion-prone volcanic soils. These historic farming practices still affect the country’s ecology today.
“Natural” is another friendly-sounding term which many assume means that food is good for us and for the planet. Natural is good. Unnatural is bad and, well, unnatural. However, many natural foods are poisonous and dangerous. As the biologist Ottoline Leyser has pointed out, “No one sends their children into the woods saying ‘Eat anything you find. It’s all natural, so it must be good for you.’” Meat is often viewed as more natural than vegan meat alternatives brewed in vats with a number of different ingredients. But modern livestock farming has involved millennia of artificial selection and is far from what most people would consider natural. Animals are unable to move and form family and social bonds as they would in the wild. You won’t see a domestic cow or chicken in nature as they’d be eaten by predators in no time. These animals only exist because humans bred them into existence from less tasty and less manageable wild ancestors. Meat alternatives – unnatural though they may be – generally have much smaller carbon and land footprints compared to meat. Unnatural can be better for nature. So, the next time someone talks about intensive farming or natural food, ask them exactly what they mean. Emma Garnett is a researcher in the Health Behaviours Team, University of Oxford. Dealing with Dirty Water WrootWater Dirty Water Filtration Dealing with Dirty Water & K-Line Irrigation System Dirty Water Filtration & K-Line Irrigation System WrootWater After many years trying to find a solution for dirty water we have found a cost effective solution, not only is the system simple it also has a low power requirement. This new system comes with a low capital cost, and with ease of use it suits all types of terrain. It also allows slow application rates to match ground infiltration. The system is modular so it is also easy to expand. The system operates at 2-4 bar pressure using a 4mm-6mm Size Sprinkler Nozzle this gives an output of 0.8 to 1.1 m3 per hour per sprinkler with a diameter of 20-24mt therefore applying 3-4mm per hour. The system is designed for clean or dirty water with large solids being removed by the WrootWater Super Simple Filter, removing all particles above 2mm, it is also self-cleaning so relatively low maintenance and trouble free.

Wrootwater_1/2page_advertorial.indd 1 The Sprinkler we use to spread the water after the filter is the famous K-Line system from New Zealand. This is a modular sprinkler system used mainly for irrigating grass as it is easy to manage and is economical with very few moving parts so there is very little to go wrong. We think we now have the winning system that is both economical and easy to use.
26/03/2021 14:40
We are now also offering the larger K-line Pods with Sprinklers to handle larger solids as these come with nozzles up to 12mm in diameter.
