Wayne Burns (Manager of Leiston Cinema) entertained us with his talk entitled "Spilling the Popcorn".
Leiston Cinema is the oldest in Suffolk, built in 1914 in four months at the cost of just over £3,000 pounds. The cinema proved extremely popular from the very beginning. It's had its up and downs over the years with competition from Aldeburgh Cinema when it opened in 1919 and the coming of television. Better times were had when the talkies and films in colour came out. The war years also brought in the crowds with pathe news
Tamsyn Imison Award
and Leiston airfield with 7,000 airmen nearby. Since then, the cinema has been bought by the council and received a grant when Sizewell was being built. The Leiston Cinema Support Club has over the years worked hard to raise thousands to upgrade the equipment, seats and the facilities including the very smart toilets!
Members were reminded of upcoming events, the SEF AGM at Trinity Park and the county quiz at Darsham, the birthday lunch in May and the next kurling afternoon at the Rifle Hall.
Voting is now open for the Tamsyn Imison Award for 2022. Anyone working or residing within five miles of St. Mary's Church in Halesworth can nominate a volunteer or group of volunteers for their outstanding work for the community in 2022. Nomination papers can be obtained from Halesworth Library or council offices.
Previous winners include the Millennium Green, the Volunteer Centre and the Halesworth Area Community Transport.
Valerie’s
Each nomination requires two signatures and eligible volunteers may nominate themselves. The winner will be selected by three local judges.
The award consists of a specially engraved glass bowl by Lesley Pyke which the winners hold for a year, and their names are recorded on a brass plate, fixed to the cabinet, in which the bowl is displayed in the county library. The award will be presented at a special ceremony in May.

Halesworth Town Council Precept Statement
At the January monthly meeting, Halesworth Town Council (HTC) had to make a difficult decision to increase the precept. Last year, the Council kept the precept unchanged for tax payers in the town but for the next financial year, the Council was juggling with a much higher budget for 2023-2024, potentially over 20%. The Council agreed to minimise this rise and take up some of the shortfall from its reserves. The net result is an 8.49% increase which in currency terms is an additional £6.91 per year for a band D house, or 13.3p per week.
A comparison to other market towns is shown below, again using the average band D house as a mid-point. You can see that Halesworth has a lower precept than all of our local towns in the district except Beccles, which benefits from additional income from other sources. We have also shown all the other house bands for your information on our website; however, the percentage increase will remain the same
across all bands.
It is worth noting that the precept has nothing to do with business tax which is determined at Government level and administered by East Suffolk Council (ESC). 2022/23 Local town annual precept comparisons (Band D); Aldeburgh £114.31, Beccles, £39.74, Bungay £95.18, Framlingham £105.31, Halesworth £81.34, Kessingland £96.59, Leiston £171.63, Lowestoft £146.63, Saxmundham £143.28, Southwold £109.59, Woodbridge £119.50.
The 2023/24 annual rate for Halesworth will be £88.25 (Band D), the 23/24 figures for the other towns has not yet been published by ESC.
Typically, the precept for towns and villages in 2022-2023 represented just 3.9% of your Council Tax. The vast majority of your bill goes towards paying for district and county services and the police.
However small these precept
numbers appear, relative to the overall Council Tax bill; HTC is very conscious that this increase may add to other household burdens and it may be difficult for some residents. If you are concerned about this and you are on low income or claim benefits you may be able to claim to up to a 100% reduction via the Government Council Tax Reduction Scheme.
The reason for the increase in Halesworth is to improve our town now that ESC has begun the process of transferring the London Road building, public toilets, the park and many open spaces to the town council's ownership. It is needed in order to improve these assets for residents and visitors, to provide more services, increase the staff to manage these assets and to deliver on many new projects and events for the benefit of all. Finally, March 16th is the official notice of the local elections. As previously reported in January, if you would like to volunteer to become a Halesworth Town Councillor, in this exciting new period for the town, please contact the Clerk (01986 874517) or call in for the nomination papers, or you can visit the ESC website to download a copy. More information on our HTC website.

Walpole Old Chapel looking for Friends and volunteers
Built as a farmhouse in the late 16th century and converted by local people into an independent chapel in the 17th century, Walpole Old Chapel was at the centre of Nonconformist life in the village, and further afield, until it closed for regular worship in 1970. Suffolk has always shown a strong independence of mind. So it's no surprise to find a very early independent (or Congregational) religious body establishing itself in this area - meeting at first in local dwellings and then, 30 years or so later, converting this old farm house into what is now recognised as a unique religious building. Walpole Old Chapel (as it is now known) is one of the oldest Nonconformist chapels in England, recently described by Historic England as a "historic gem" and listed Grade II*. It has a fascinating history, which often reflects major changes or events in broader society.
It's still used for occasional weddings and funerals but also for secular events since it has a beautiful acoustic for both music and the spoken word. It's also remarkably untouched by modern adaptations. You could imagine you are in the 1700s still when you step inside.
The Chapel is currently part of the Historic Chapels Trust but a Friends of Walpole Old Chapel has been registered as a charity to help run the activities and raise funds for repair and running costs.
We have known since 2015 that the Chapel's external render is failing, and we have been developing a £300,000 project (Walpole Unwrapped) to repair and conserve the building.
Following a number of specialist surveys, Historic England has now formally recognised the seriousness of the situation by placing the Chapel on the heritage 'at risk' register (and given us a grant of £54,000 to carry out
Quiz night fun with ABC Radio!
exploratory work needed to take the project up to the point of tendering for contractors).
We have our Discovery Project Group who are researching the personal histories of the Chapel's congregation and we're working with the Society of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) to showcase the old techniques used in the original construction of the Chapel. This remarkable building, with its unique internal space, its roof space home to a colony of brown long-eared bats also has an unimproved chapel yard rich in meadow plants, some quite rare. We have something for everyone to celebrate! We have raised £95,000 towards repairs from and are working towards submitting applications to major national grant funders.
We now feel that we need a larger pool of people who will be our 'Friends' who are interested and care about what happens to the Chapel as well as our programme of events. These Friends will have advance notice of events, special opportunities to meet socially in the Chapel as well as see the works in progress and a dedicated newsletter.
We also need volunteers to steward events and our 'Open Chapel' Saturdays and people willing to serve as trustees to swell the small group we have currently. You could help with fundraising, or get involved in the repair and conservation project.
Are you a wiz at IT or a teacher, exhibitor or event organiser who might bring groups to the Chapel?
Or a performer? Walpole Old Chapel is already on the map, now we need people to shout about it louder!
You can be local or far away, your subscription to the Friends will help provide a source of regular income for the upkeep of the Chapel; something of which to be proud.

Quiz fans will need their thinking caps in June, when Alde and Blyth Community (ABC) Radio celebrates their second anniversary by holding a fun quiz night to help raise funds towards the refurbishment of their new studios.
Many of the station's presenters will be on hand to host 10 rounds and as you would expect, questions will include various music-based rounds, plus a host of other topics too. The aim (as always) is to have fun and there will be prize for the winning team and the obligatory 'booby prize' for the lowest scoring table.
ABC Radio was founded in April 2021, serving the 'coastal corridor' between Orford and Southwold and currently broadcasts every weekend from 5pm on Fridays until midnight on Sundays. You can find ABC
Radio online: www.abcradio. co.uk, via the new ABC Radio app and by asking Alexa to "play ABC Radio". The varied programme schedule is available on the station's website.
The quiz night will be held at the L.T.A.A (Leiston Football Club), Victory Road, Leiston, on Friday 30th June at 7:30pm. Spaces are limited and tickets cost just £3.50 each, with a maximum of six people per team and are now available from the L.T.A.A and also from Leiston Film Theatre.

News from the Friends of St. Peter's Sibton
The Friends of St. Peter's Sibton celebrated their 25th anniversary in style last year, with the extensive events programme at the church and the splendid medieval pageant in July. So... what's next?
This year, our events programme has been finalised with monthly events at the church during the summer, several concerts, our usual popular three day book sale in May and a major weekend event planned for July. Lots to do and enjoy! The Friends would welcome enthusiastic helpers to join our cheerful group; it meets around four times a year. If you're interested in local history, or could help us with IT or advertising, you will be welcomed with open arms.
Sunday 29th April at 3pm is the first in our calendar of events organised by the Friends is a concert of baroque music by Zephyr Baroque. Tickets will be on sale from The Weavers Tea Room and Peasenhall General Store before the event. The music involves the use of fascinating musical instruments. The music played often has a light touch, but can be languorous and moving
in turn; well worth hearing in the medieval space of Sibton Church's nave with its beautiful ancient carved roof. Tea will follow the performance.
27th-29th May from 10:30am4:30pm: Annual book sale weekend. Good quality secondhand books, children's books and toys, plants, bric-a-brac, cream teas and refreshments available. Admission is free and there is ample parking.
June 18th at 3:30pm: A concert by Suffolk Strings. Tickets will be on sale from The Weavers Tea Room and Peasenhall General Store before the event. This informal occasion with tea to follow has become a very popular and enjoyable annual event showcasing interesting music in a variety of styles, with music often arranged specially by Peter Bumstead, who is the orchestra's conductor.
The events programme continues through the summer with a large-scale event being organised in July, and more planned events to be publicised later in the year.

Tribute to former local Auctioneer, David Metherell
A popular Linstead resident and former auctioneer has died, aged 58 years, after a short illness. In excess of 130 mourners overspilled into Linstead churchyard on 16th February to pay tribute to David Metherell (pictured), a dedicated family man and respected friend.
Born in Sydney, Australia, David's family moved to South Africa when he was six years old, where he began his schooling. At the age of 12 years, the family moved back to England where he completed his secondary education.
David initially worked as a trainee land surveyor during which time he was involved in the setting out of a section of the M25 at Swanley, setting out of a footbridge at the Dartford crossing and assisting with a detailed survey of Winston Green Prison, Birmingham. He then joined Suffolk Police with whom he worked for 15 years before studying a Fine Arts Valuation degree at Southampton Institute,
Blyth Road Industrial Estate, Halesworth, IP19 8EN
graduating in 2004.
After working for Bonhams, David and his wife Cecilia started Metherells Auctioneers, based at the Old Printworks, Halesworth. During this time, they were indebted to friends who supported them in this venture.
David was a long-standing member of the drama group, 'Circle 67' and was cast in leading roles regularly, his acting skills enhanced by his striking and powerful voice.
The family would like to thank the Reverend Dominic Doble for conducting the service, Halesworth Co-op Funeralcare, Halesworth Florist, Halesworth Community Transport, Emma Biggs Catering, Torben Merriott for the sound/video production and the many other friends who lent support to the family and helped with erecting the overflow tent and parking on the day.
To date, donations in David's memory have raised £307.70 for St. Elizabeth Hospice and £314 for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Where a married couple (or those under a civil partnership) jointly own assets, income arising from those assets is deemed (by default) by HMRC to be taxable on a 50:50 basis no matter what the underlying ownership. The reason for this is simply an old anti-avoidance rule to prevent, primarily, rental income being claimed to be received by the individual with the lower tax rate.

interest in the property changes. You cannot therefore de-elect (although you can trigger the end of the election by changing the underlying ownership of the property). There can also be other implications in making an election such as Stamp Duty Land Tax, obtaining permission from your mortgage lender, etc.
With the start of the new tax year, however, is it time to review this potential election to see if you as a couple can change the beneficial ownership of any income and, by making a form 17 election, (re)arrange affairs to reduce your future tax exposure as a couple before the 2023/24 rental income starts to be received?

It is, however, often quite possible to elect to have income arising from jointly held assets taxed in accordance with the underlying beneficial ownership by means of a simple election on "Form 17". This would enable the income arising to be taxed in unequal shares.

There are, of course, various conditions - the main ones being that the asset(s) in question must be held as "tenants-in-common" and not as "joint tenants" and you will be required to provide evidence of the actual ownership (eg: by deed, or written declaration). Both spouses must elect for the actual basis to apply, and the form must be received by HMRC within 60 days of the date of the declaration (this deadline is strictly adhered to by HMRC).
The election will only apply from the declaration date and therefore cannot be backdated.
You should note that once the election is in place, the election will continue to be in force for future tax years until one spouse dies, the couple permanently separate or the beneficial

Schoolreaders
Volunteers wanted to read to primary school children
Children's literacy charity
Schoolreaders is urgently looking for enthusiastic volunteers who can help spread the joy of reading to children in Suffolk primary schools especially around Halesworth.
The much-needed charity recruits volunteers to listen to children read weekly in primary schools, focusing on schools with the greatest need.
Every year, one in four children leave primary school unable to read well which can have lifelong consequences. Furthermore, government statistics show it is the youngest and most disadvantaged children who have been set back the most in reading following the disruption to education caused by the Covid pandemic.
Schoolreaders volunteers act as positive role models, not only helping children improve their reading age but also their reading fluency, enjoyment and comprehension.
Antonia (retired, and a Schoolreaders volunteer) explains her experience: "Being a Schoolreaders volunteer has
exceeded my expectations and is one of the best parts of my week. I can see the difference the reading makes to the children particularly in their punctuation. Being able to read is the greatest gift you can give a child. They can go on to cook, build a rocket or run the country."
Jane Whitbread (who founded Schoolreaders 10 years ago and which now provides over 12,000 children with a weekly one-toone reading session, concludes): "Schoolreaders are needed more than ever, especially for the youngest and most disadvantaged pupils to help them catch up on their reading. Children who leave primary school unable to read well will have trouble accessing their secondary education fully which can have life-long consequences. The beauty of our reading scheme is that not only does it benefit children and schools, but it also gives our volunteers a huge sense of satisfaction in sharing their love of reading."

Matthew Tanton Brown
News from Halesworth and District Gardening Society
Ask any gardener and their biggest concern these days is the dry summers, and we can expect these to continue and therefore what plants they should consider having in their gardens. If you too have this concern, then a visit to the Halesworth and District Gardeners' Society meeting at the Rifle Hall, Halesworth on April 13th is a must!
Matthew Tanton Brown will be giving a talk entitled "Plants for the Dry Garden". He will look at some of the plants that should do well in those hotter/drier positions in the garden. Having had a very hot dry summer last year he has been looking at plants that did well and hopefully these will be a good guide as to what can survive. This talk has gone down very well at other garden clubs and comes highly recommended.

Spring update from Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund
Charity Football Match
5th February
The newly formed Westhall Charity Football Club hosted a match to raise funds for us. We would like to thank Will Bird, Lauren Bird and Sam Jefford for organizing this wonderful event, and Sizewell Sports and Social Club for providing the venue. We'd also like to thank all the players, referee Marcos Allen, and Ipswich Town Football Club for donating two tickets that have been auctioned. A big thank you also to all family and friends who came along to support the teams.
A total of £409 was raised for our funds, and all this will help us to continue providing services for people with dementia, and their carers.
Rotary Club Presentation
Teresa and Jim Fyfe attended on behalf of HDCF and were presented with a cheque for £350, the amount collected by Rotary and HDCF members at the Halesworth Co-op in December 2022. Many thanks to Southwold and District Rotary for their continued support, and the Co-op for so kindly allowing this collection to happen.
Bryan Samain Book Sale
We are deeply grateful to local author Bryan Samain who has very generously donated all the proceeds from the sale of his book, The Waveney Boys, to HDCF.
100+ Club Draw
The winning numbers for the January Draw were 1st 50, 2nd 71 and 3rd 54. The prizes for the February Draw were £90, £60 and £30, and the winning numbers were 54, 34 and 55. If you'd like to join the 100+ Club please contact Anna on 01986 872207.
Charity Golf Day.
A charity Golf Day for HDCF will be taking place on Wednesday 3rd May at Halesworth Golf Club, with the
main sponsor being Suffolk Car Centre. The event is open to teams of four, and if you'd like to enter a team or sponsor, or help in any way please contact John Giles on 07789 991046, or Sara Higgins on 07984 435318. We would like to thank our families that have donated money in lieu of flowers from the
funerals of their loved ones. At their sad time it is wonderful that so many of our families and their friends think of our work, and put us forward to receive donations in lieu of flowers.
For general enquiries about HDCF, please contact our secretary, Alison Cackett, at: info@halesworthdementia.co.uk
Garden at Wisley, Merrist Wood College in Surrey and at Hadlow College in Kent where he covered both ornamental and commercial horticulture. He worked at Otley College of Agriculture and Horticulture where he was Unit Manager in charge of the production unit and grounds.
After Otley, he worked at several different nurseries, finally ending up at Place for Plants where he was the Manager for 20 years, before taking the plunge and going self-employed as a specialist gardener. You may also have heard him on BBC Radio Suffolk's Gardening Hour, over the last 15 years or so. The club goes from strength to strength-to-strength. Doors open at 7:15pm for a 7:30pm start. All very welcome. Entry is just £2 for non-members. Free parking in the Co-op. Further information available on our Facebook page and our noticeboard outside Coopers.
New large-scale vacuum forming machine
Broadwater invest in growth and diversification
It goes without saying that the past few years have not been without their challenges, for businesses across all sectors.
Suffolk based glass reinforced plastic (GRP) manufacturer Broadwater have met these challenges head on.
Part of the Betts Groups of Companies, they have enjoyed consecutive record-breaking years and have again been placed in the Suffolk top 100 businesses for 2022.
With innovation at the centre of everything they do, Broadwater have continued to push the boundaries of what is possible within the fibre reinforced plastics sector. In order to offer more choice to its existing customers base, and attract new customers, Broadwater have invested over £250k on a large-scale vacuum forming machine.
With a maximum moulding envelope of 3m x 2.5m x 1.3m, the new machine offers the flexibility of producing parts both large and small. The main advantage being that the moulded parts and the waste is 100% recyclable.
Vincent Mortlock (Technical Director for Broadwater) said:
"Investing in vacuum forming does not mean that we're moving away from fibre reinforced plastics. We simply want to do what we've always done, which is offer our customers a wide range of moulding solutions, and ultimately the best fit for their requirements. We believe that this will compliment what we already offer customers."
Broadwater have been manufacturing GRP parts for a wide range of industries since 1977 and have made great strides within this sector. Their infrastructure has
evolved over nearly two decades to accommodate the latest in moulding techniques, and now their capacity and capabilities have expanded even further.
Matt Herbert (Managing Director) said: "Investing in a completely different but complimentary moulding technology represents a significant step forward and yet another milestone for the business. I'm grateful for the tireless commitment and hard work by the whole team to deliver the project at pace and within budget. This is the largest single investment the business has made for some time and I am excited at the prospect of our existing customers benefiting from our extended portfolio of processes and materials and to welcoming new clients and the business they will bring."

Halesworth & Southwold Community News - April 2023 - 7
Friends of Halesworth Community Health & Care
Work on the conversion of the Old Methodist Church into a social day care centre for the people of Halesworth and surrounding communities continues apace.
The heating of the new day centre has become a central part of the renovation and because of the practicalities involved, it has been decided that the previously planned mezzanine floor will be revised to a first floor with stairs at both ends of the building. A planning application has been submitted and the trustees are hopeful that permission will be granted. As well as office space for the service provider, this can then be used for storage space and office space for the trustees, together with a quiet room for
Holton and Blyford Village Hall
service users who require privacy. Depending upon finances, the trustees would like to make provision for a lift to the first floor as they understand that not all service users may be able to manage the stairs.
The trustees have also applied to the national grid for electric to be connected to both the day centre and the offices for Halesworth Volunteers. Once this has been done, work can start on the solar panel installation for both premises.
The kitchen area together with the two walk-in shower rooms and disabled toilets are ready to be fitted out now that the plumbing is in place.
With the offices for Halesworth Volunteers, we are now at the
stage where the internal work on the office block can begin whilst the outside of the office block is ready for cladding.
It's very exciting for the trustees to see all the hard work coming together and are quite impatient to have an opening date, however, we do realise that we still have quite a way to go but that light at the end of the tunnel shines ever so brightly each day.
Please be advised that the next members meeting to be held at the Halesworth Day Centre, Waveney Local Office, London Road, Halesworth will be held at 7:30pm on Wednesday 12th April. Do come along if you would be interested in finding out more about this project or joining FHCH&C

Angel Bowls Club looking for new members
Halesworth Angel Bowls Club is preparing for the 2023 season and are looking for new members. The club puts in teams to three leagues: the Benacre, the Halesworth and the Sunshine. The HABC Benacre Team (led by Stuart Bourne) was the most successful last year pushing us up as champions to Division 2. Although we were not as successful in the other
Halesworth branch of Cancer Research UK
two leagues, we were always competitive. The Sunshine League gives novices at the club the chance to experience match play and to visit other clubs in the area.
The club will be open to visitors who might be interested in taking up the sport on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April. Members will be present to help those who have no experience of the game.
Neat Feet
The committee and volunteers would like to thank everyone who came along to our Jumble Sale in February. It was a lovely start to the new year of fundraising events to see so many familiar faces and lots of new ones as well. Your fantastic support raised a magnificent £913.24. We're so very grateful to you all.
The Halesworth Co-op very generously provided a beautiful food hamper for the raffle which raised £126 and was won by a delighted Diane from Holton.
Thank you everyone who made cakes for us and to the menfolk who moved mountains of jumble and put out tables and chairs. We are so lucky at Cancer Research as we have a wonderful team of volunteers, thank you to all of you.
If you enjoyed this Jumble Sale (and the tea and cake) we will be having another one on October 14th.
Welcome to three new ladies, Valerie, Jenny and Jackie. We hope you enjoyed the Jumble Sale and will continue to help at the events.
Thank you to Spectra for sponsoring our events again this year. It's greatly appreciated and so very kind of you.
Please continue to visit Gill on 19 Dukes Drive for a lovely selection of books and jigsaws (weather permitting).
Our next event is our once-ayear Big Breakfast on Saturday 25th March from 9:30am-1pm in Holton Village Hall. Look out for our posters and banners. When Margaret decided to retire from the committee, in true Margaret style, she said she didn't want a fuss, but we couldn't let her retire without doing something.
So with Phyllis' help, myself, Debbie (Treasurer) and Maxine (Secretary) surprised Margaret when we met her and Phyllis at
Margaret with her flowers
The Old Hall Café in Reydon. The committee and volunteers contributed to a gift of flowers and a vouchers to say thank you to Margaret for all her years of service. Margaret will still come along to our events when she can for a cup of tea and a chat and we will all miss her presence and experience on the committee. Thank you Margaret. If you are interested in accessing our services, you are welcome to drop in and speak with a member of staff or contact us via email or phone. Hall, please bring along unwanted metal items 9am-4pm Saturday, 9am-1pm Sunday (no fridges, freezers, TVs or gas cylinders). Our events committee are always grateful for offers of support and ideas for local fundraisers so do be in touch.
Dee's Den (the charity shop of the Pear Tree Fund) raises money to support the running of the Centre and also providing additional care for those registered with Cutlers Hill Surgery, enabling people to be cared for at home at end of life, so people can die at home if this is their wish.
Dee's Den in Steeple End near the church, sells most things (clothes, footwear, accessories, linen, books, bric-a-brac, kitchenware, games, toys, haberdashery, homemade jam, marmalade and much more). We have bargain adult clothes at £1 and for children 50p, a bargain

We welcome donations of clean saleable items, as well as items for the Easter tombola. Please drop them into the shop when we're open, Monday to Saturday 10am-1pm (winter opening times). We don't accept electrical items unless new and boxed.
We rely so much on our wonderful teams of volunteers, both in the centre and in the charity shop and are so grateful to them for them offering us their time and expertise. If you're interested in volunteering with us, we'd love to hear from you, drop in for a chat or contact us via email or telephone.

Spring in the Garden Spring in the Garden
to prepare your garden for new growth and make it look tidier.

Whether you're an experienced gardener or a complete beginner, there are plenty of things you can do to make the most of your garden this spring. Here are some tips to get you started:
Get your tools in order:
Before you get started on any gardening projects, it's important to make sure you have the right tools for the job. Check your shed or garage for any tools that need to be repaired or replaced. You might need to buy some new tools, like a good pair of gloves, a spade or a fork. You don't need to spend a lot of money on fancy tools, but it's worth investing in a few high-quality items that will last you for years.
Plan your planting:
Spring is the perfect time to start planning your planting for the year. Think about what you want to grow, and make a list of the plants and flowers you need to buy. Consider the layout of your garden, and plan where you want to put each plant. Think about the amount of sunlight each area gets, and choose plants that will thrive in those conditions.
Tidy up:
Winter can be tough on your garden, so now is the time to tidy up. Remove any dead leaves and branches, and clear away any debris that has accumulated over the winter. This will help
EASITRON LTD
Once you've planned your planting and tidied up your garden, it's time to start planting. If you're planting flowers, make sure you follow the instructions on the seed packets. You might need to plant them indoors first before transferring them outside. If you're planting vegetables, make sure you plant them in an area that gets plenty of sunlight and is well-drained.
Consider a garden project:
Spring is a great time to tackle a garden project. This could be anything from building a raised bed to installing a pond. Whatever project you choose, make sure it's something you're excited about and that you have the time and resources to complete.
Get the family involved: Gardening is a great activity for the whole family. Get the
kids involved by giving them their own patch of garden to look after. They can plant their own seeds, water their plants, and watch them grow. It's a great way to teach kids about nature and the environment.
Enjoy your garden
Finally, make sure you take the time to enjoy your garden. Whether you're sitting outside with a cup of tea, reading a book, or entertaining friends, your garden should be a place of relaxation and enjoyment. Make the most of the spring weather by spending time outside and soaking up the beauty of your garden.

Pets are a beloved addition to many households, bringing joy, companionship and plenty of snuggles. But the benefits of pet ownership go far beyond the furry cuddles - research has shown that pets can have a positive impact on both our physical and mental health.
For starters, owning a pet can improve our mood and reduce stress levels. When we interact with our furry friends, our brains release feel-good hormones like oxytocin and serotonin, which can help to reduce anxiety and depression. Pets can also be great company for those who live alone or struggle with socialising, providing a source of comfort and friendship.
But with great pet ownership comes great responsibility. It's important to remember that pets
rely on us for their well-being, and as such, we need to take their care seriously. This means providing them with adequate food, water, shelter and exercise, as well as ensuring they receive regular veterinary check-ups and vaccinations.
It's also important to educate ourselves on the specific needs of our pets. For example, dogs need regular exercise and socialisation to stay healthy and happy, while cats require regular access to clean litter boxes and scratching posts.
Smaller pets like rabbits and guinea pigs also require specific care, including appropriate food and housing. By understanding and meeting these needs, we can help our pets to thrive.
Aside from the physical benefits of pet ownership, the companionship and love
that pets provide can have a profound impact on our mental health. Studies have shown that pet owners have lower levels of depression and anxiety, and are more likely to experience feelings of happiness and contentment. Caring for a pet can also provide a sense of purpose and routine, which can be especially beneficial for those struggling with mental health issues.
Of course, pet ownership isn't for everyone. It's important to consider factors like lifestyle, living arrangements and financial responsibilities before
bringing a pet into your home. Pets require time, attention and financial resources, and as such, it's important to make sure you can provide for them before committing to ownership. But for those who are able to provide a loving home for a pet, the rewards can be immeasurable. From the unconditional love they provide to the joy they bring into our lives, pets are truly one of life's greatest blessings. By caring for them with responsibility and dedication, we can ensure that our furry friends are happy, healthy and loved.
Pet food larders open in Beccles, Bungay and Halesworth
Residents in Beccles, Bungay and Halesworth who are struggling to feed their pets due to rising costs can now use one of five community pet food larders. Some people may be finding it difficult to feed their pet due to the cost of living and may be considering re-homing their pet to save money. To reduce the need for people to make this difficult decision, the new pet food larders provide free dog and cat food, pouches, biscuits and pet litter.
Cllr Letitia Smith (East Suffolk's cabinet member for Communities, Leisure and Tourism) said: "Pets are important members of the family and play a huge role in reducing loneliness and improving mental wellbeing. No-one should have to re-home their pet due to rising costs and these new pet food larders will help people who are struggling to continue to take care of their pet."
Five community venues have agreed to host pet food larders:
• Beccles Library
• Bungay Library
• Bungay Community Support, 8 Marketplace
• Halesworth Community Larder, St. Mary's Church Hall
• St Luke's Parish Pantry, St. Luke's Church, Beccles Pet food has been supplied by the RSPCA and the larders are open for anyone to take an item if they need it to help with the cost of living. All of the pet food items are free and there is no need to register.
Sharon Chapman (Beccles Library Manager) said: "The pet food kindly donated by the RSPCA has been genuinely appreciated by so many of our library customers - and their pets! All of them have asked us to pass on their thanks."
Chloe Shorten (Head of Animal Welfare from RSPCA Mid Norfolk and North Suffolk branch) said: "We understand it's a difficult and scary time for many people due to the cost of living crisis and unfortunately rescue centres are inundated so we are having to prioritise the most needy to come into our care. This is why we have teamed up with local councils and food banks to share out food supplies and help keep pets in homes."

Blyth Valley Parkinson's Support Group
A good number of our members came along to our February meeting and enjoyed a fascinating talk by David Wollweber from Halesworth Museum.
For our March meeting, we must thank John and Wendy
Mendham for stepping in at the last moment to speak to us. At our April meeting, we will be finding out about the Harmony Centre and the services and treatments they provide. Please do come along if you have been diagnosed with
Parkinson's disease or care for someone who has. You can be sure of a warm welcome, help and support.
For further information, please contact either Gail on 01986 872283 or Margaret on 01502 478502.
Wenhaston Flower Club
Our meeting on Tuesday 7th March was a demonstration by Jenni Baker. Not only did she produce four beautiful arrangements, but she kept us entertained with very lively stories about the four times she has entered Chelsea Flower Show. The meeting was very well attended and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 4th April at 7:30pm in Wenhaston Village Hall. This will be a workshop with Roger Woolnough entitled "Spring Design".
You will need:
• A straight sided container 10cm diameter by 20cms high (glass/ plastic/tin. Can be square or round).
• Enough straight sticks (20 to 30) to cover around the outside of the container, 2cm to 3cm taller than
St. Mary's Handbell Ringers' spring and summer music programme now underway
the containers height (willow/ cronus/sycamore).
• Piece of bark, the height of the container.
• Two strong rubber bands to go around the container.
• Raffia/string/ribbon to cover the rubber bands.
• Bunch of 10 tulips or daffodils.
• Three tall decorative twigs.
• Scissors/secateurs.
• Table covering. Please come along even if you don't want to make the arrangement, as the evening is always such fun. The price per meeting is still only £5 which includes tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone is welcome. Any raffle prizes or items for the sales table would be gratefully received. For more information please contact Jackie Chenery 01502 478401.
Our programme of Spring and Summer music is underway and we look forward to entertaining organisations in the local and wider area during 2023. We recently spent a very pleasant afternoon with the Friends and Neighbours group in Loddon.
They learnt about the history of handbell ringing, listened to our music and then had the opportunity to have a go. We thank them for their hospitality and enthusiasm and look forward to a return visit at some point.
Make a note in your diary:
Our next Interactive Workshop will take place in Halesworth Library on Saturday 6th May from 10:30am-12pm. Why not pop in and help us celebrate the Coronation! The workshop

Halesworth Probus report
At our lunch meeting in March, we were delighted to welcome retired judge, barrister and university lecturer, Malcolm Knott. He talked on the subject of "My Life in the Law". It was a most interesting talk, detailing many of the fascinating experiences and people he met during his working career. (John Wood).
Our March social outing was to The Ancient House in Halesworth Thoroughfare for a "Tapas and
Continental Breakfast". With 34 seats taken, members, wives and widows enjoyed a very convivial occasion. After the lunch David Prime thanked the proprietors for the excellent selection of food. Speaking on behalf of the Social Committee, David stated that following many requests, there will be a return visit to Helmingham Hall Gardens. This will take place on Wednesday 14th June. Full details will be circulated in due course.

New rooms at The Crown and Castle in Orford, themed
to celebrate local landmarks
The Crown and Castle in Orford, has revamped all seven bedrooms spread across the entire first floor of its main building. Individually styled with great attention to detail, each new room features bold accent colours and decorations, which reflect and acknowledge the local area's heritage.
Deluxe rooms
The largest, deluxe sea view 'Lighthouse' room has been brightly revamped in red and white to mimic Orford's once prevalent lighthouse, which was visible through the bay window prior to its decommissioning in 2013, and demolition in 2020. Red accents include the radiators and even the kettle, as well as two comfy armchairs by the bay window positioned to take in the wide views of the estuary and Suffolk coast. Adding a touch of nostalgia, a small lighthouse lamp sits on a table between the two chairs to commemorate the former landmark.
With views towards Orford village including the magnificent St. Bartholomew's Church, the accent colour in the second deluxe room is an attractive fuchsia pink teamed with grey. The grey chesterfield-style twoseater sofa and its large footstool are complemented by pink cushions, two have an attractive bee motif, which is replicated on the window blinds. Other fuchsia points include the bed headboard and radiator. This room has a wide walkway leading to the bathroom, which now acts as a dressing area with a new fuchsia coloured builtin wardrobe and Hollywood style vanity mirror with three different light settings. Even the bathroom has been restyled with a newly fitted bath alongside the window, complimenting the existing walkin shower.
Superior seaview rooms
Three superior sea view rooms run across the back of The Crown
and Castle. 'Florence', features coastal colours of teal contrasted with a neutral cream, while the bright and airy 'Watchtower' room, which has a small view of the Orford Castle keep from its bathroom, features brick tiles to resemble an old building.
The 'Ness' has been styled using a bright floral fabric acknowledging the wild flowers growing freely on the Orford Ness coastal nature reserve (National Trust), a short ferry trip across the estuary. Cream accents include the radiator, prominent against a sage and silver patterned feature wall, cream lamp and parquet dressing table. Guests booking this room are also treated to sea views while soaking in the bath tub.
Standard double rooms
With a nod to the past, the two standard double rooms take their names from buildings dating back to when Orford Ness was an atomic weapons research site. Themed in purple, black and grey, 'Black Beacon' is so called after the unusual rotating black navigation beacon, while 'Pagoda' takes its name from the abandoned explosion testing labs, which can still be seen today. In contrast with the past, the 'Pagoda' room has been styled in bright yellow accents, which include the radiator, headboard and chair and even a yellow framed TV. Teamed with floral cushions and blinds, the décor reflects how the area as a whole has been reinvigorated into one where nature flourishes.
About The Crown and Castle
A few steps from Henry II's 12th century castle keep in the peaceful Suffolk village of Orford, The Crown and Castle is a highly rated restaurant with just 21 delightful rooms. Expect oak beams, stylish décor and interesting artwork adorning the walls. There's a traditional bar with an open fire, which can be found burning in the cooler months, also a large terrace for alfresco dining and drinking on warmer days within sight of the keep.
Good quality, unpretentious food is at the heart of what The Crown and Castle offers in its lively restaurant
Saxmundham Adventure Playground
Parham Airfield Museum Volunteer Vacancies
As a charity, Parham Airfield Museum relies on its team of volunteers to help it run and thrive. We are always looking for new volunteers to undertake a range of tasks including helping our visitors on our open days, helping in the tearoom and working behind the scenes with our maintenance team. We offer full training and continued support.
Easter Egg Hunt
with delicious dishes created by the Head Chef, Jake Lawrence and his team. The creative British menu features a wealth of quality Suffolk produce including Orford landed seafood and locally reared meats, plus classic favourites like home battered fish and chips and beef, pork and chicken roasts for Sunday lunch.
Dogs are welcome to stay with their owners in one of the five dog-friendly garden rooms, they are also welcome on the terrace, in the bar and to sit alongside their owners at a bookable dog-friendly table in the restaurant.
There has been a hostelry on the site of The Crown and Castle for eight centuries. The original inn was, apparently, built into the walls of the 12th century Orford Castle but is now separated from it by a little lane. The octagonal tower keep is very much intact and has survived on account of its value to sailors; back in the 19th century when navigation was a hit-and-miss affair, it provided a landmark by which they could orientate themselves. It was built by Henry II between 1165 and 1173 to consolidate royal power in the region, previously dominated by the dissenting Bigod family. Ascending the five floors to the Keep's roof earns you spectacular views over the otherworldly landscape of Orford Ness – part nature reserve, part atomic weapons research site. For opening times check www. english-heritage.org.uk.
The restaurant with rooms offers electric bikes for hire allowing guests to explore the area on two wheels; they also have a selection of suggested walks and boat trips to the Orford Ness nature reserve running from spring to autumn. Venture a little further and spend time exploring the galleries, shops and artist workshops at Snape Maltings or the renowned Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon ship burial site, near Woodbridge. Prices start from around £170 B&B per night for two sharing; dogs charged extra. To discover more about the Crown and Castle visit: www.crownandcastle. co.uk or call 01394 450205. On Sunday the 9th April at 3pm Saxmundham Adventure Playground will be holding their Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the playground at Carlton Park. The first Egg Hunt was held in 1992 and has become an annual event ever since, with the same organisers in attendance every year. This year, the Bell Hotel have very kindly sponsored the Egg Hunt.
If you've not attended before, we hide cardboard eggs around the playground (to enable us to do this we will be closing the playground from 2:30pm-3pm on the day). At 3pm, the Egg Hunt begins and once the children have found the cardboard eggs, they can exchange them for chocolate eggs (we provide the eggs). The weather has always played
an important part in encouraging families to attend but come rain, sunshine or even snow we will be there and hope you will too. There is no charge for this event but there will be a donation bucket. It seems everybody is looking for volunteers and we are no exception. Our committee started to raise funds to establish the playground in 1989 and ever since the same two committee members (along with other volunteers) have given their time to maintain the playground. Saxmundham Town is growing very fast and we feel sure there must be other younger families who'd like to join our committee to support this much needed venue. We'd be really pleased to hear from you, make our day, ring Pauline 01728 602496 or Sue on 01728 603072.
We are open on Sundays from April to the end of October and Wednesdays over summer. A few hours of your time would make all the difference. If you'd like to join
Martlesham Heath Aviation Society
Martlesham Heath Aviation Society's upcoming monthly meetings will be on Friday 31st March and Friday 2nd June. Unusually for us (because the First Friday in April is Good Friday), this talk has been shifted to a week earlier than usual.
Friday 31st March meeting:
Mike Pugh Davies with his illustrated talk: "Aircraft versus U-Boats", all about the epic struggle between the RAF and later also with the US Army Air Force against German and Italian submarines - as the enemy tried to starve us into submission... Very nearly succeeding.
Friday 2nd June meeting:
Paul Ross will present the story of Silver City Airlines. An unusual airline, which (rare for the time) was completely independent. It operated across Europe
from Britain using some iconic aircraft as the Douglas DC3 and the Bristol Freighter, often from small airfields such a Lympne in Kent to Beauvis near Paris. The sort of airline that belongs to a completely different era of passenger travel - more leisurely, when you often got to meet the Pilot. But also perhaps not as safe!
All our meetings take place at: Martlesham Heath Community Centre, Felixstowe Road, Martlesham Heath, Suffolk, IP12 4PB. Entry costs £3 for society members, £4 for non-members, who are also welcomed. Pay on the door on arrival. No need to pre-book, just turn up early!

We're joining in with 'The Big Help Out' for the Coronation. The aim of the campaign is to get more people volunteering who traditionally don't consider it. On Monday 8th May, you're welcome to come and shadow one of our volunteer's for a shift, ask them questions and see if this is something you would enjoy doing regularly. www.parhamairfield museum.co.uk

Project 40 seven
On 11th February, Aldringham Tea Room held a mysterious afternoon tea and an enjoyable 'Who Dun It' was wonderfully acted out by Bright Sparks. ₤100 was raised and donated to a local charity. It's hoped that the next mystery event will take place mid September 2023. Same time (3pm-5pm), same place.
Reviews:
"My husband, two friends and I spent a lovely afternoon at Aldringham Tea Rooms. Bright Sparks (an amateur dramatic group) put on a Murder Mystery playlet and the audience had to guess who done it! With clues peppered throughout, the mystery unfolded. The eccentric characters were well played with many humorous incidents and interactions between them.
During the interludes, we were served with sandwiches of our choice, cheese or fruit scones and tea, delicious! After much
discussion, we finally had to decide who the dastardly murderer was. I'm afraid I couldn't possibly tell you... But our group of amateur sleuths won two bottles of Prosecco! A great way to spend an afternoon. Thank you to Pippin and her staff at the tearooms for organising it all."Ruth and Alistair.
"An enjoyable murder mystery and afternoon tea. As a first time venture, into the murder mystery genre, by the players it was an excellent experience. The will was being read and all the suspects, in conversation and interaction giving the audience the clues. Whether or not you picked up on the clues or red herrings was down to you. From the entry of the players to the reading of the will and disclosure of the perpetrator your interest was held. I hope there will be a next time, there will be plenty of takers, including me, so book early!" - Marie and Jill.

Ringsfield CofE Primary
This term, the children have been learning more about and developing the skill of collage.
In KS1, the children looked at the amazing linear artwork of Andy Goldsworthy. They then worked in groups to experiment with a range of natural materials to create a range of linear patterns and visual effects. This art lesson took place outside and we turned the playground into an art gallery for the afternoon!
The children moved on to explore the work of Richard Long and his sculptures and pictures based on spirals and circles. They applied a range of different types of paper to a template of concentric circles to create their own version of a Richard Long picture. The children were
School
encouraged to take their time to ensure that each circle was clearly defined.
The Year 5 and 6 children have been producing some amazing collages linked to natural forms. They began by researching the artist John Piper and learnt how to create a collage using a range of different materials such as card, tissue, and mixed papers.
The children also explored how positioning materials in a certain way provides depth and cohesion to their work. They explored how materials can be torn, cut, and scrunched to represent parts of the whole piece and were able to use these skills to produce a variety of different effects. Finally, the children used acrylic paints to enhance specific areas of their
collage and developed techniques such as blending and highlighting to create contrasting features in their work.
We are so proud of the finished pieces, and we are very excited that some will be displayed at Halesworth Gallery Young Artists Show on 29th April the 1st May.
Artwork will also be displayed from lots of local primary schools including Brampton and Bramfield CofE Primary Schools.

Making time to relax and unwind
When we make time to relax and to unwind, we begin to look and feel different. We become more accepting of ourselves and start to see solutions and new ways of being and doing.
When we feel more relaxed, something else also begins to happen. The peace that we feel within ourselves radiates outwards, attracting new opportunities and connections
Bramfield, Ringsfield and Brampton Primary Schools activities
At Ringsfield, the reception children have been learning about the change in season from winter to spring and discussing how it is the time for new growth as the weather will begin to change to warmer conditions. We have been busy preparing our flower bed and vegetable patch ready for growing our plants and seeds. The children have been preparing the soil by
turning and weeding it and we have added some more compost to help them grow. We have started by planting carrot seeds and the children will be learning about how to look after the plants and observing how they change over time.
The reception children in Oak Class at Bramfield have been thinking about farming this month. As well as learning about
farm animals, we have talked about where our food comes from and how it is grown. We have looked at food packaging to find out how far our food has travelled to get to us and looked at what food we grow in this country. We found out that one of the foods we can grow is our favourite root vegetable, the crunchy carrot, so we have sown some seeds in the hope of getting an early crop
before the summer holidays. The children made a scarecrow to help keep their crops safe and investigated different materials they could use for her hat so she didn't get her straw wet. We will be visiting a local farm at the end of the month to consolidate all our learning.
At Brampton on March 7th,we were very lucky to have Leanne from the RSPCA visit the school to talk to everyone about what the organisation does to help protect animals in England and Wales. The children in Reception enjoyed learning and categorising the different types of animals into pets, farm animals and wild animals. All of them had a soft toy from one of the above categories and they then learnt how to care for and look after it. We also learnt what all of the letters represented for the RSPCA acronym and learnt some actions to remember them!

If you're feel cross and sad about White Bridge being fenced off and want to help make sure we soon get a long-term solution, add your voice to ours. Write to Suffolk County Council and tell them why that bridge and access to the different parts of the Green is so important to you whether on foot, in a buggy, with friends or alone, for work or for leisure. Send emails to the local Rights of Way Team: annette. robinson@suffolk.gov.uk and copy them to our local County Councillor: annette.dunning@ suffolk.gov.uk. If we don't keep letting the Council officers and councillors know how important the bridge is, it will get swamped by other things that seem to be more pressing.
