A merry Christmas from all at the Village Hall. November and December are busy months for the Village Hall with Christmas Fairs, Craft Fair, Carols & a Pint, Wreath Making and our usual regular hirer's. We have a new committee of willing volunteers as well as our great band of volunteers who assist with our events. We were sorry to see John and Wendy Mendham leave the committee, but they deserve a well-earned rest. Thank you both for all you've done for the hall and for running the bingo, the tote and of course, for pulling the new drainage system fundraising together. There is still lots to do. We need to resurface the drive and car park area, renew the hot water tank as well as general maintenance and decorating. Upcoming events: • December 1st: Wreath Making with Bloomcore.
16 Bridge Street, Halesworth, IP19 8AQ
• December 16th: Pop Up Pub with Carols to get us in the Christmassy mood. • January 27th: Burns Night. This will be limited so get in quick! • June 16th: Father's Day Classic Car Show. If you're interested in joining the committee, or would like to book an event, please either call: 01986 874442 or email: holtonandblyford villagehall@hotmail.com

STANNARD, John Passed away December 1st 2017. Loved and remembered always. Love from wife, Heather. Treasured memories of a dear dad. Love, Tony and Anthea.
Christmas is coming! There will be a Community Lunch on Christmas Day at the Day Centre. To book your place, please just call the office on 875600. The lunch is being provided by Jackie and the Warm Room team. We can provide some transport too, thanks to our friends at HACT. Also, if you know someone who cannot get out and about, but would like a lovely Christmas Lunch delivered, just call us and we'll book them in. Gifts for Caryl: If you'd like to donate a Christmas Gift to someone in need, please bring your beautifully-wrapped present to the Halesworth Volunteers office. Your pressies will be handed out
to Larder visitors in the week before Christmas. The Community Larder: Lots of people ask what makes the Community Larder different from a Foodbank. The Community Larder is open to everyone. You don't have to have a voucher, you can just come along and see what the Larder has to offer you. If you find that, like me, you have far too many tins of chopped tomatoes, why not just bring them in and swap them for something else. If you're finding things a bit hard at the moment, pop in and get what you need. You always get the warmest welcome and if you need some help or advice, just talk to the team and we can

Community Cars: Our Car Service is very, very busy at the moment and our volunteer drivers are doing everything they can do to ensure that they get you to your appointments. We are so sorry if we have had to say no to your journey. We're now doing more than double the amount of hospital trips than we did before covid and you can imagine that puts a lot of pressure on us all. To help us, please could you ensure that you give us at least five day's notice for your hospital appointment and two days' notice for all other journeys. Your garden gives up some beautiful gifts of its own at this time of year - allowing you to bring the outside into the home with foliage and 'green' decorations. By using your garden as a resource, you can create some simple, yet beautiful decorative displays for the Christmas festivities, giving your home a more natural look whilst remaining festive, stylish and environmentally friendly. So, our thrifty tip of the month is: Bring nature into your home this Christmas. A great use for your winter prunings is to arrange bare or lichen-covered twigs in a tall glass vase and festoon with tea light holders, or simply use lengths of trailing ivy and evergreen foliage such as holly twisted into swags for looping along mantelpieces or winding round banisters. Sprigs of aromatic leaves and herbs (bay, rosemary, sage, thyme and anything else you can lay your hands on) arranged around a large candle in a deep fluted dish makes a fragrant table centre piece. Hollies take centre stage this month as they really are the jewel in the winter's crown. Aside from their value as evergreen plants, they have stunning seasonal berry displays that provide a buffet for birds. Their leaves range from bold and glossy to tiny and fine-textured, and from smooth to spiny with numerous colourful variegations. They are true garden all-rounders, offering a combination of structure, dazzling seasonal fruit displays and excellent evergreen foliage. Other berry producing plants also come into their own during the winter months. As well as
Did you know that the Green is not owned by a council or other authority, and is not managed or maintained by anyone who gets paid? The land is owned by a charity, the charity is run by Trustees who are volunteers, the work on the land is done by workparty volunteers. If all trustees and work-party volunteers downed tools tomorrow, what would happen? • The all-weather cycle track would crack up: At the moment, volunteers spray off the weeds to prevent that from happening. • The paths would become unwalkable: You've seen volunteers working on keeping them clear. • Fences would fall and obstruct the paths. • The open meadows would gradually fill with scrub and become impenetrable, you've seen us haymaking. • The owls and kestrels would have no open areas to hunt small mammals in. • The wildflowers that flourish in open conditions would be swamped by rough grass and overshadowed by shade. • Without trustees, the charity's connections with the local councils and with other

community groups in the town would disappear. • New projects would not arise... Would the land still be available for public use? So here's a loud "hooray" for all the volunteers, past and present, who over the years have made the Green what it is today and who continue to keep it accessible for people and varied for wildlife, and who work to keep in touch with others in the town. And a "welcome" for the volunteers of the future. We will soon be sending out all around the town an invitation to take part in a Millennium Green Celebration Survey to mark the first 25 years (a whole quarter century) of the Green and you can help enormously by returning the survey to us. And look out for the Celebration Launch Event in February 2024. Do keep letting us know of any exciting sightings. being attractive to gardeners, they are often delicious for wildlife. These energy rich offerings provide important nourishment for birds, mammals and insects. They also give borders colour and interest at a time when many plants are dying back. Whether you have them in your garden, or love a woodland walk, some of the winter berries to spot through the colder months include: Spindle (Euonymous Europaeas) with vibrant pink fruits that split to reveal bright orange seeds that are loved by birds, mice and foxes, but beware, the leaves and fruits are toxic to humans. Rowan (Sorbus Aucuparia) which has small orange-red berries from August to January that are popular with many types of birds and safe for people to eat, but have a sour taste. Juniper (Juniperus Communis) an evergreen with fragrant needle-like leaves and purpleblack berries that are a favourite with birds and are also good for flavouring gin and sauces. Apart from tending to festive foliage, other jobs for December on the RHS Gardener's Checklist include: • Take hardwood cuttings. • Prune deciduous shrubs. • Prune apple and pear trees. • Leave parsnips in the ground until needed, they taste sweeter after a frost. • Start forcing rhubarb either in the greenhouse or outdoors. • Trees and shrubs can still be planted outside. • Reduce watering of houseplants. • Plan your planting and crops for next year. • Make eco-friendly choices by selecting disease resistant fruit trees or roses to reduce use of chemicals in the garden.

Halesworth & Southwold Community News - December 2023 - 7
Halesworth & District Museum
Halesworth's secret history... From the sky Long-hidden secrets of the landscape in and around Halesworth are being uncovered, not only through conventional archaeology, but also using a tool available to every one of us with access to a computer. The tool in question is LiDAR (light detection and ranging), and it was the topic of Halesworth & District Museum's final talk for 2023. The speaker, Kevin Wooldridge (Archaeologist & Museum Volunteer) explained some of the local insights obtained recently using LiDAR. For example, it reveals dried-
up former waterways, and has thereby shown that in Roman times, Halesworth was part of an integrated transport system, incorporating navigable rivers and three Roman roads. It has shown that Southwold and Lowestoft were once islands. It has revealed the previous existence of several buildings at Blythburgh Priory that had remained undetected using other technologies and it has shown that the monks at Blythburgh used a river quay for deliveries rather than a road. So what is LiDAR, and how can something so technological be readily accessible to the non-
professional? Kevin explained that, in simple terms, LiDAR involves taking billions of laser photos from the sky, to create a highly-detailed, accurate map of the surface below, providing information not seen using other methods. Clearly, we're not all about to board an aeroplane and wield a laser camera. However, Kevin said that detailed LiDAR images of our area are available, free of charge, from the Environment Agency, along with instructions on their use. He said that LiDAR, along with other online information sources such as the Archaeology

The Huntsman Hykettes have been training for the official Norfolk leg of Trek 24 which unfortunately was cancelled in September due to the hot weather. With the event being rescheduled to June 2024, the decision was made by the girls to do their own 24-kilometre walk, which they did on October 22nd. Gelato & Sorbetto at Bungay Buttercross served as the halfway point with very much needed icecream refreshments, family and friends from the pub joined them to give support for the final push. The money raised so far for the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is £2,374 with still some more donations to be added. The EAAA is a charity close
to the hearts of the Huntsman & Hounds, due to them being in attendance when the Landlady's son was struck down by illness. The walk was done in memory of her son, Cameron.
Donations are still being taken. If you'd like to donate, please visit: www.justgiving.com/ team/huntsmanandhoundshykettes.

Data Service, QGIS (a free geographic information system) and local historical records, enabled anyone with an interest to become a 'citizen scientist' and he stressed the importance of sharing any findings. "Whatever you find in this area, please report back to the Museum" he said. Halesworth & District Museum already has a calendar of talks in place for 2024. Dates for your diary, and the topics, are as follows: • April 11th: The need to change treasure law in England to include items of historical importance as well as those made of precious metals. • May 23rd: Interesting people associated with Walpole Old Chapel. • September 19th: 'Witches' of Halesworth. • November 14th: The war dead of Halesworth. All talks take place at Halesworth United Reformed Church, Quay Street, IP19 8EP, starting at 7:30pm. Doors open at 7pm, and admission costs £6 (£3 for Museum friends). No need to book, just turn up and pay at the door. Please note that the Museum will close for the Christmas break from 4:30pm on December 16th, until 10am on January 16th 2024, when winter opening hours will apply (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, mornings only). Normal opening times will be resumed in March (date to be decided). Please consult the website for details: www.halesworth museum.org.uk

Daniel F M Evans B.D.S., M.F.G.D.P.
My husband Bertie had a phenomenal memory... He was the secret weapon in any quiz team, he always won at Trivial Pursuit. He didn't just remember facts, he understood them too and could explain them to me. Wherever we went, he seemed to know the history of the place. When some distant country came up in the news, he knew where it was and what was happening there. It made him a very interesting man. Then Bertie was diagnosed with vascular dementia. Becoming a carer for someone with dementia is a slow burn
experience. At first, it's little things... He can't remember where he parked the car, or the time he forgot he had driven to work and came home on the train. It takes forever to get a diagnosis, because he is so smart, he passes the tests. But finally, he cannot pass them anymore, and he can't remember the day, or the year, or who the prime minister is. So, you have to take over everything. All the bills, all the admin. We had bailiffs round twice because I hadn't picked up bills he needed to pay. Then the physical things go. He can't remember how to mow the lawn,

take out the rubbish, boil an egg, make a cup of tea, so you are now doing everything. He can't go out alone, he can't be left alone. Finally, he can't remember how to dress himself, use the toilet and he is so sad, and so frightened, and you can't make it better for him. So you are exhausted and broken-hearted every day, with no end in sight. For me, the Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund provided a lifeline. Two hours a week of free respite enabled me to take an art class. Two hours just for me. And as things got worse, they provided more hours. Respite is provided by trained dementia carers from a local agency, who not only give the carer a break, but also provide stimulation and activities for people with dementia. The charity also run events and activities for people living with dementia and their carers, and, through these activities we found a community, new friends, who knew and understood what we were going through. From these new friends I learned so much about what else is out there for people living with dementia. I am so grateful that I have joined the charity as a trustee, and now Bertie is in hospital, I can help with the charities' invaluable work. If you, or some one you know is living with dementia, please get in touch with us. You don't have to worry alone. Don't wait till things get really bad, get in touch, we want to help. Bramfield learning about the past
Ringsfield, Brampton and Bramfield schools In the reception class at Bramfield, we have been learning about the past through the classic book 'Peepo' written by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. 'Peepo' is set in the 1940s and follows a day in the life of a baby at home, from breakfast to bedtime, and also features a dad in a soldiers' uniform. We have used the story to help the children to think about how things have changed and what has stayed the same as well as talking about Remembrance Day. The children loved taking a turn in the old tin bath, positioned

in front of the (virtual) fire with the clothes drying behind. We had an authentic iron and copper kettle from the 1940's and there were lots of discussions about bath-times, cooking, washing and heating. Later in the week, the children were thrilled to have a visit from a new baby and her mummy which allowed us to compare past and present firsthand and really brought our topic to life. If anyone has any interesting photos, artefacts or stories relating to this topic that they'd be happy to share with us, then please do contact us at the school. We love visitors in Reception! The children at Brampton have been really engaged in our phonics learning and are becoming more confident with their letter recognition. We have been putting challenges in the
outside area to help them to be more independent readers and writers. One of the activities was a picture match challenge. The children really enjoyed completing this and showed great pride in what they had achieved. At Ringsfield, the Reception children have been welcoming Leaf Man the late arrival of autumn. The children have been afternoon sessions for two-yearsharing lots of their knowledge olds and accept golden tickets. about how seasons change, If you'd like to come and view and we are lucky that our local our Nursery setting, please call: environment provides lots of 01502 713030 or email: wonderful opportunities to make office.ringsfield@ observations. We have also been greatwoods reading both information books primary.org and story books, including the story 'Leaf Man'. The children were inspired to make their own leaf man or animal, and they used a variety of autumn leaves to create them. They were all very unique! The Nursery have been learning through the classic story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'. They especially loved retelling the story by squelching and squerching through the mud! If you are looking for a Nursery place for your child, we accept children with a 'We're Going on 30 hour code. We also have a Bear Hunt'
We were delighted to welcome a new demonstrator, Amie Galione to our meeting on November 7th. Amie's demonstration was entitled 'Sustainable Christmas' with an emphasis on using natural products and recycling and reusing containers whenever possible. The evening provided the members with lots of Christmas gifting ideas and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We were all delighted to see Jean back with us again and in good spirits after being a bit poorly. Our next meeting is our Christmas Party on December 5th in Wenhaston Village Hall at 7:30pm. There will be a demonstration by Jenni Baker titled 'The Scent of Christmas' and we all look forward to seeing her again this year. For the party after the demonstration, we ask everyone to please provide a plate of sharing food, sweet or savoury
and a Secret Santa gift of a value up to £5. The Flower Club will provide the drinks. There isn't an entrance fee on party night. We hope to see everyone there for an enjoyable entertaining evening and to begin the Christmas festivities. For more information, please contact Jackie Chenery on: 01502 478401.

As our speaker did the Can-Can in the aisle at our last meeting, members sat enthralled but no one showed any inclination to get up and join in. Jane Hoggar kept us entertained with her life story in dance. She always wanted to be a ballerina but realised at 16, she was six-foot tall and could look down on most male ballet dancers. She changed direction and became a chorus girl, a career which took her travelling all over the world, dancing on cruise ships in all weathers and on land to many foreign countries until making her way to Paris to join the Folies Bergiere as a high kicking Bluebell Girl. Jane demonstrated that at 57, she can still do the high kicks as she sang and danced for us. Best wishes all our members for a Happy Christmas and New Year!
volunteers who between them do so much to keep the Hoppa running for both regular services and Community Hires. Drivers and buddies often hear people say they don't know what they'd do without the Hoppa, and we're delighted to feel that the service is important to so many people, whether it's someone going to the surgery, or to the local shops, a family trip to the town park, or a bus full of school children on an outing to Lowestoft for a sporting event. To paraphrase an old advert: "The Hoppa enables so many people to get to places that other buses don't reach". Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and remember we will be running our usual service over the festive period apart from December 25th and 26th and January 1st.
to tell, but the prize goes to the stowaway stoat, which refused to leave his dinghy until the boat was turned upside down on the shore. We all enjoyed seeing the beauty and richness of the wetlands that are part of our local area, and which we can visit now with a clearer eye of what to look out for. Our next meeting is on January 11th at 7:30pm at the Southwold Arts Centre, Cumberland Road, IP18 6JP. Hannah Nutt will talk about the Work of the World Land Trust. In November, the Blyth Valley and Southwold branch of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust welcomed Tony Brown to talk about the many facets of Broadland wildlife. Tony is a naturalist and keen photographer, and we were treated to a fascinating presentation of the rich variety of broadland flora and fauna. Some species have been brought back from dangerously low numbers to become part of our regular sightings, such as otters, bitterns, marsh harriers and avocets. We looked at rare sightings of black terns, and an American wood duck. We could see details of the unusually large feet of moorhens, the stunning display of the 'eyes' of the emperor moth, and the intricately detailed feathers of the barn owl, complete with its prey, a wood mouse. Tony had many wonderful anecdotes

Earlier this year, I appealed for new leaders for 1st Southwold Guides. A number of people said they might be able to help, but unfortunately, no-one has come forward to take over the unit. So it has been temporarily suspended and is not meeting at the moment. If this situation continues, it is with very great regret that next year it will be closed, thus ending 113 years of existence. But this doesn't have to happen if there are a couple of ladies out there who would be prepared to take it over. You don't have to have been a Guide yourself, full training is given and the previous leaders will be happy to work with whoever comes forward until they complete it. This could be you! It really is great fun, the girls are lovely, you can feel you are really making a difference, and it can be a useful thing to have on

There is still an active Rainbow Unit in Reydon (4-7 year olds) and Brownie Units in Southwold and Halesworth (7 to 10 year olds), but if 1st Southwold Guides closes the nearest Guide Units for them to move on to will be in Beccles or Bungay. (Since the closure of the last Guide unit in Halesworth a few years ago, also for lack of leaders, Southwold has been welcoming girls from Halesworth and surrounding villages too). New to Guiding? celebrates its Platinum Jubilee Suffolk County Council are celebrating and marking the 70th anniversary of the School Crossing Patrol (SCP) service. The idea for the SCP came in the late 1940s when two road safety officers in the London boroughs of Dagenham and Barking recognised a growing problem with the safety of child pedestrians given the increasing volume of traffic on roads. At that time, around 90% of children walked to school
unaccompanied, and also played out on the streets. Children were advised to ask an adult to see them across busy roads, but the road safety officers had the idea of 'official' adults to help children on their way to school at points where traffic was at its worst. They went on to employ 'active retired gentlemen' as 'traffic wardens', who wore white coats and peaked hats, as worn by park keepers at the time. The
idea proved very popular and soon spread to other London boroughs. The SCP service was born when the Government recognised the value of having a service nationally that crossed children at busy and difficult locations. The service was officially created by the SCP Act in 1953. Many communities in Suffolk rely on their patrol, with our newest patrol site opening in Leiston in December 2022.
Patrols are a muchappreciated sight within our communities providing a safer crossing place, and encouraging sustainable travel on the journey to and from school. The uniform may have changed and patrols can now stop traffic to cross any pedestrian, adult or child, but patrols are as recognisable now as they were back in 1953, and SCC celebrates the work and dedication of all their patrols.

Local charity Christmas card shop Celebrate Christmas celebrates remarkable milestone with Martlesham Brass The Woodbridge 41 Club Charity Christmas Card Shop hit an impressive milestone on November 15th by raising £1 million for charity. This money has been raised over the past 31 years through the sale of Christmas cards in a variety of pop-up shops in Woodbridge town centre. Currently, the shop is in the old HSBC premises (37 Thoroughfare, Woodbridge) and is open 10am to 4pm during the week and 9:30am to 5pm on Saturdays. It's also open on Sundays in the run up to Christmas. Over the last 31 years, the shop has supported over 50 charities ranging from large national charities (such as Barnardos and
RNLI) to local charities including Suffolk Punch Trust, EACH, Just 42 and many others. Roger Parker has been managing the popular shop, since 1993. "I'm very proud that we have raised £1 million. It's something I've had in my sights and been talking about for 15 years! I enjoy working with so many different charities, both big and small. There are some wonderful causes out there and because we have very few running costs, almost the entire turnover goes to them. It's a big team effort running the shop and I'm very grateful to all
the volunteers who help in the shop, some of whom have been involved for 30 years. Over the years, many landlords and agents have been kind enough to let us use their empty premises. As a result, we have been found in many of the shops in the Thoroughfare, St. Mary's Church Centre and the library. We're also very lucky to have lots of regular customers who come back year after year. I think it's a bit of a game for them, tracking us down and working out which empty shop we've taken over!" The shop is open until December 16th and probably has the widest selection of charity Christmas cards in Suffolk.
Martlesham Brass has a busy December coming up! You can see them at the following events: • Coffee & Carols: December 2nd: St. Michael's Church Centre, Martlesham Heath from 10am-12pm. All aboard a magic carpet to Pantoland this January! Team B Productions invite you on a magic carpet ride to Old Peking in January, when they bring you a fabulous family Pantomime worth wishing for. Aladdin appears live at the Leiston Film Theatre from January 12th to the 14th, 2024, with demand for tickets so high, seats for some performances are already limited. When the wicked Abanazar learns of a magical lamp that could transform him into the most powerful sorcerer in Pantoland, he tricks Aladdin into retrieving the lamp from a cave. But when a glamorous Genie appears, an adventure begins that will see Aladdin, the Twanky family and the beautiful Princess Jasmine in a battle between good and evil. The Pantomime has been written by Wayne Burns and is being brought to the stage under his 'Team B Productions' title - a group of experienced am-dram performers, whose previous sell-out successes have included shows at Leiston Film Theatre and at the Spa Pavilion Theatre in Felixstowe.
The group have recently enjoyed huge success with a three-night, sell-out run, with their Pantomime for grownups, 'Sleeping Booty' and work is already underway on their next family Pantomime for January 2025 and a brand-new comedydrama for September 2025. Aladdin promises another fun-filled family pantomime, packed to the panto brim with toe-tapping tunes, a huge helping of audience participation, and plenty of laugh-out-loud slapstick fun. Wayne Burns (Leiston Film Theatre Manager & Pantomime Director) is looking forward to bringing Aladdin to the stage. "Aladdin is one of my alltime favourite Pantomimes and the entire cast and crew can't
Our audiences are in for a real treat" he said. The Pantomime sees renowned Suffolk musician Tom Horton returning as the musical director and the energetic students from the Chloe Kinrade School of Dance will be making a welcome return to the stage, as part of the Pantomime extravaganza. Aladdin will be appearing live at the Leiston Film Theatre on: • Fri 12th Jan: 7:30pm. • Sat 13th Jan: 3pm & 7:30pm. • Sun 14th Jan: 11am & 3pm. Limited tickets are now available, priced: £17.95, £16.95 and £14.95. Book your seats today on 01728 830549 or online at: www.leistonfilmtheatre. co.uk.

HMRC are currently undertaking compliance checks for those who should be paying the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) but, HMRC suspect, are not. The tax charge applies to anyone (including your spouse or partner) who claims child benefit and whose adjusted net income exceeds £50,000 annually. (Where both spouses/partners exceed £50,000, the HICBC is levied against the partner with the higher income). The charge is equal to 1% of the child benefit received by the household for every £100 of adjusted net income received above £50,000 so that by the time you reach £60,000 income, the Child Benefit has been reclaimed by the government. HICBC has existed for two decades but now HMRC have started using their "Connect" computer system to link child benefit records, P60s and Tax Returns (if filed) to addresses to determine whether and where there are individuals who should be paying but are not. If you know for certain that your salaried income for a tax year will exceed the £60,000 upper limit, to avoid both the HICBC tax charge and possibly having to file a Tax Return purely for this reason, some parents are simply not claiming the Child Benefit in the first place. However, as you can only backdate a claim for Child Benefit for three months, if you later find that your income has dropped (for example for a period out of work, or as a result
of a downturn in self-employment profits) you may find that the approach of not claiming from the start of the tax year will ultimately deny you child benefit that you may otherwise have been entitled to. Therefore, for some taxpayers, it is better to claim the child benefit and then pay back overpayments under the HICBC system, despite the additional aggravation that this may cause. If your income has exceeded £50,000 and you have not paid any HICBC that you ought to have, it is better to tell HMRC and correct your affairs voluntarily rather than HMRC discovering something themselves. A "prompted declaration" (only admitting to something after HMRC has enquired about it) is always looked upon less favourably than a voluntary declaration should penalties become involved. Hope this helps. For further information please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) via email: robin.beadle@ensors.co.uk. Beccles Inner Wheel In October, members of the Beccles Inner Wheel Club visited the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) base in Norwich. The EAAA is a charity providing a helicopter emergency medical service for the people of East Anglia, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year from the Norwich base. It was launched in 2000 and has two high-tech helicopters, with specialist doctors, critical care paramedics and highly trained pilots for night flying to unknown and unlit sites. Some of us will have witnessed the striking bright yellow helicopter flying overhead and landing in Beccles to attend an accident or other emergency. We were able to see the helicopter and its high-
tech and medical equipment, chat to the crew and visit the training suite and sleeping pods which offer rest for crew waiting an emergency call. A second base is in Cambridge. This year's Inner Wheel President, Gail Harris, has chosen the EAAA as her charity and the visits were arranged by member Jacquie Greenfield, who for many years was a volunteer for the EAAA. The Inner Wheel works hard throughout the year to raise funds for good causes such as this while at the same time enjoying social activities and outings of interest. If you would like more information about our club, please ring our Membership Officer on: 01502 712067.
Our Ruff Stuff off-road Cycle event took place on October 29th, starting from Butley Village Hall. After the previous three days of rain, the weather took pity on us and it was fine. Over 200 people of all ages took part from all over East Anglia. We raised over £2,000 for our Rotary charities. Our registration desk was manned by Rtn Sally Green and her husband Spence. Many thanks to both of you. The club organised a raffle, which raised £200. The raffle
was run by Rtn John Pearson and Ross Woolley. Our President, Simon Holloway, pulled out all the tickets. Members of the club acted as car park attendants and marshals on the route. Thanks to Rtn Martin Kenyon of our daughter club, Woodbridge Deben, for helping out. Our thanks to Woodbridge Inner Wheel for providing great food and drinks. Also, thanks go to Jamie Greenwell for the use of his field where around 200 cars were parked.

After a successful September concert, we at the 150-strong Trianon Symphony Orchestra and Choir will soon be commencing rehearsals for our winter concert on January 6th, at 7:30pm at the Corn Exchange Ipswich. We'd like to welcome our sponsors for this concert, the combined Rotary Clubs of Ipswich. It's many years that we have had a community sponsor and thank them for their support for the arts in Ipswich. The January programme consists of a mixture of seasonal pieces including Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride", Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Masquerade from the Phantom of the Opera" and John Rutter's "Rejoice and be Merry", performed by the full orchestra and choir and is sure to be a bright spot in those dark January days. We're pleased to welcome back Professor Christopher Green, our
founder and musical Director, after his illness during the summer. Chris was recently awarded the prestigious Lady Hilary Groves Prize 2023 from Making Music as part of their annual music awards and all the members are looking forward to congratulating Chris on this achievement. You can read more about this on: tmg.org.uk Trianon Music Group meets for three major concerts a year in January, April and September, and rehearses for about six weeks prior to each one. In addition, we have four other concerts supporting local charities in the community with a smaller number of performers. The importance of supporting local busine es this Christmas a unique and vibrant community culture. Local businesses often reflect the personality and values of the area, offering a diverse range of products and services that cater specifically to the needs and tastes of the residents. This diversity adds character to the community that you will not find online. Additionally, supporting local businesses reduces our carbon footprint. With shorter supply chains, there is less need for extensive transportation, resulting in decreased emissions and a smaller environmental impact. Choosing local products and services is a step towards sustainable living, this is something that we should all be working towards and has never been more important. Furthermore, when you shop locally, you invest in

personal connections. Local business owners are more likely to know their customers by name and offer personalised service. This sense of familiarity and community engagement enhances the overall shopping experience, making it a much more enjoyable experience. In conclusion, the significance of shopping locally extends far beyond mere transactions. It is an investment in the prosperity, culture, and sustainability of our communities. By choosing to support local businesses, we become active participants in the growth of our towns and villages, creating a more resilient and vibrant tapestry that we can proudly call home.

In a world dominated by global markets and online retail giants, it's easy to overlook the treasures that lie within our towns and villages. However, the importance of shopping locally cannot be overstated, as it serves as a cornerstone for the vitality and resilience of our communities. One of the most significant advantages of supporting local businesses is the positive impact on the community's economy. When you choose to shop on your high street or dine at the local café, your money circulates within the community, fostering economic growth. This economic stimulation creates jobs, supports local entrepreneurs, and ultimately contributes to the overall well-being of the town. Beyond financial benefits, shopping locally also promotes
