Halesworth Town Council update

195990

The recent successful Climate Conference (a joint venture between St. Mary's and Halesworth Town Council) saw people gather for events as diverse as looking at endangered species with Banham Zoo, a Question Time style panel featuring Dr. Thérèse Coffey among other notable panellists and talks from people hoping to inspire changes in the way we look at climate change. The organisers have worked hard to ensure there will be legacy from this event and follow up events to come. There are still a few shopping bags made from recycled publicity banners available from the Town Council for a £10 donation. This were made by Katherine Ellen Designs and

first half, then opened the second half with three songs of their own, accompanied by the Blow Ins. It was a wonderful evening, much enjoyed by a highly appreciative audience. The OffCut Singers meet every Tuesday evening in St. Mary's Church, Halesworth, but from October 31st, they will be meeting in the Community Room at the Co-op from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

We are flushed with success at the Village Hall as our major project to renew our sewerage system is COMPLETE and working! The ageing system (installed to cover a much lesser usage) was just not coping with todays world and throughput of the Hall. It was a mammoth task to undertake with the need for the charity to spend around £36,000. Probably not the most exciting use of money either! How do you interest people in poo? Thanks to so many people who have made it possible. Holton Parish Council brought forward £8,000 of Community Infrastructure Levy monies, Cllr Annette Dunning pitched in with £3,000 from her Community Budget from Suffolk County Council, The National Small Lottery Fund stepped forward with a magnificent £6,700 to

Suffolk Sails and are a good reuse of the advertising banners the Town Council has produced over the last few years! Thanks to everyone that came to support the new and established market stalls on October 4th. The atmosphere was very positive and it was nice to meet regular shoppers and new visitors alike. We hope to increase the stalls further in the future but can't do this without your regular support. The focus on the Market supports the Neighbourhood Plan recognition that there was a disconnect between the Market Place and Thoroughfare. Why not tie in your visit to the market with shopping or eating at the other businesses on offer in the town? On September 24th, Spexhall Church held a fundraising concert. The stars of the evening were the Blow Ins, a duo from Holton & Blyford Village Hall Scarborough who entertained everyone with their beautiful singing accompanied by Celtic harp and guitar. The OffCut Singers from Halesworth were delighted to be invited to join the Blow Ins. They provided backing for a song in the

help, Spectra Packaging and Broadway Colours helped with £1,000 each and The Adnams Foundation gave us £1,500. All was most gratefully received. Then there was our local people, well over £1,000 was raised by donation, so many who gave what they could to help us complete our urgent project. We're so indebted to each and everyone who did. Never forget the Flushing Dance which raised over £800, helped by The Halesworth Coop and Cllr Alison Cackett's donations to achieve that sum, and wow what a night that was too! How nice it is to write something telling of success and my last thanks must go to The Community News and the Blyth Valley Times who have featured our endeavours faithfully! Wendy Mendham

The birth of a market, and a town

Halesworth Volunteers update Yes, I am going to mention Christmas, even though it is only October. There are already a number of exciting events lined up for the festive season. Community Christmas Lunch: Jackie and the Warm Room team will be holding a Community Christmas Lunch at the Day Centre on Christmas Day. We will also be delivering Christmas Lunches to people who can no longer get out and about. To book a place at the Lunch, please call Halesworth Volunteers on 875600. All Access Carol Service December 21st at 2pm: Last year, Rev Gini organised a lovely All Access Carol Service. It was one of the highlights of last year's Christmas. So it's brilliant that it will be back this year too. Halesworth Volunteers led by the wonderful Babs will be laying on a tea too. Gifts for Caryl: We all remember our wonderful friend and volunteer, Caryl Coomer. This year, we are again asking for 'Gifts for Caryl'. Last year, we received nearly 200 beautifully wrapped gifts which were distributed by the Community Larder team to families and people who live alone. Just ring the office on 875600 to find out how you can

give a gift for Caryl. St. Mary's Christmas Tree Festival: The Wish Group will be presenting our tree at the festival this year. Do look out for the tree from the Knit and Natter Group. They have cleverly taken the theme of the 12 Days of Christmas and are creating goody bags for families that will be given out in the Larder. How lovely is that? The Community Larder: Thank you to all the people who have donated so generously to the Larder recently. We're so grateful for your support. Thanks to the Churches that donated after their Harvest Festivals. Also, thanks to Justin and Paul and the Spar team who kindly donated lots of wonderful chilled items after they closed for two weeks for the refurbishment. Thanks to the Halesworth Fairies for making it happen! Community Cars: We were delighted to welcome two new drivers to the team this month. Like all our drivers, they are already going that extra mile to help people who cannot travel independently get out and about. If you want to find out about volunteering, please contact Kay, Helen or Karen to find out more. Don't miss our lovely events:

The Wellbeing lunch takes place on the first Tuesday of the month at Chinny's. The Community Lunch in partnership with St. Mary's Church takes place at St. Mary's on the last Wednesday of every month from 12:30pm. Don't forget Nigel's brilliant quiz on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at the White Hart. Our AGM: Our AGM will take place on November 28th at 7pm in Halesworth Day Centre. You are very welcome to attend. Finally: If you know someone who needs a bit of help, just give us a call on 01986 875600. The office is open from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. If we cannot help, we will know someone who can!

their influence at court, serving as cup bears to successive kings. The market became a specialist in the sale of meat, and possibly fish, attracting customers from across the locality. During the following century (in the aftermath of the Black Death) Sir Richard's descendant (Sir John de Argentein) acquired further land around the town, much of which was rented out. The feudal system was breaking down, bringing an increase in the mercantile class and small farmers, and a growing need for an outlet for goods and produce. Brian explained that as the success of the market grew, some of those selling their wares became confident enough to establish a permanent presence in the town. Some of the stalls were developed into buildings, perhaps opening out into a counter and awning on market days. Bread ovens were built, facilities for feeding and butchering livestock were established. Sellers and their families made Halesworth their home. A Guildhall was set up to support crafts and craftsmen. In short, a town was being created. Two key local industries - flax/ linen and malt/brewing further strengthened Halesworth's prosperity. A legacy from Patrick Stead (owner of a successful maltings business) led to the establishment of a hospital in the town, making Halesworth increasing self-sufficient and an important hub for surrounding villages. Housing development in the 20th century, under the auspices of the Urban District Council, saw the town continue to grow in both size and prosperity. Now, with yet another century well under way, Brian finished the talk by asking the audience to consider what the future might hold for their town.

in numerous locations across North Suffolk, and many, including Sotherton (charter in 1226), Westhall (1229) and Wissett (1267), never took on town status. So why did our market prosper, and in turn bring prosperity to Halesworth? Even eight centuries ago, there was no denying the power of 'location, location, location'. In medieval times, Halesworth had the first inland crossing point on the River Blyth, and it was on the east-west routeway from the important port of Dunwich. Then in later centuries, the development of the River Blyth navigation and eventually the railway made the location even more powerful, bringing a wider range of produce to the shoppers of Halesworth. Back in the 13th century, it certainly helped that the de Argenteins were at the peak of

166531

It is our market, still here today, that has made Halesworth what it is... a town. The presentation 'Halesworth 1223-2023. The Development of a Market Town' was created by Halesworth Museum Trustee and local author David Wollweber. On the day, David was unable to attend, and the reins were ably seized by Brian Howard (Museum Curator). As those who celebrated our 800th anniversary a few weeks ago will know, the beginnings of Halesworth as a town go back to 1223, when the Lord of the Manor (Sir Richard de Argentein) paid two palfreys (horses) to King Henry III for a licence to hold both a weekly market and an annual fair. By itself, this licence (or charter) was no guarantee that the market, or Halesworth itself, would go on to flourish. Market charters were granted

192224

The sights and sounds (and even the smells) of our town's market through the centuries were skilfully evoked for the packed audience at Halesworth & District Museum's latest talk. In the early years, the throngs who attended Halesworth Market were there to buy and sell, barter, watch street entertainers and meet friends and neighbours. Some were there to administer (or receive) justice as it was meted out in past times, stocks, pillories and possibly whippings were all part of the occasion. Once a market gained recognition through a charter, officials attended to regulate the price and quality of basic goods, such as bread and ale, and because of the crowds, markets were an ideal location for law makers to deliver proclamations. Markets were in fact, a fundamental social institution.

The Pear Tree Fund

Cancer Support Group This group meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday each month at the Pear Tree Centre. These sessions are there to help people with cancer or their carers. The aim of the group is to help people to "live well with cancer". A cancer diagnosis is bound to be very frightening, but these days, with such amazing developments in treatments, people are now living much longer. This group is led by two cancer survivors who want to provide a forum for people to come along and chat, share ideas and look for ways to help people through what may be a very scary time. Sometimes people just want a

We don't offer medical advice, but are often able to point people in the right direction if they have special needs or requirements. Pear Tree staff are often a first point of call, and again we are grateful to them for their great support. We meet from 2pm to 3:30pm. People are most welcome to just come along. loved Halesworth-based charity at the end of September. Jane set up the charity in 1989 alongside fellow district nurses Nikki Sawkins and Barbara Kell after recognising that the families of patients who wished to die at home needed extra support. Originally called the Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund, it provided additional care in the last days of life so that people could die in the place of their choice. The charity expanded in 2020 when it opened the Pear Tree Centre, on land next to Cutlers Hill Surgery, which offers information, support and advice to patients with a life-changing diagnosis, as well as their families. The development was made possible thanks to a successful £900,000 fundraising drive, with the centre now welcoming around 550 people each month. "I am proud to have been involved with planning and building the Pear Tree Centre," said Jane. "We have created a really lovely space which encourages people to relax. It really does provide a very special, calm and welcoming atmosphere. I have also loved working with the

and have a better experience." Jane's husband Ted joined the trustees in 2012 after retiring from his job as an accountant. After developing a business case for the Pear Tree Centre, he became the project chair and helped to overcome several challenges to steer the construction work to completion. "Looking back, I feel great pride that I have been a part of developing such an attractive and much-praised building," said Ted. "I'm also proud that Halesworth and the surrounding area now have a facility which is proving itself to be such a boon for local people. The Pear Tree Fund has gone through some difficult times since we opened the doors (not least the pandemic), but the centre is now providing a haven which is a godsend to so many people. I'm confident that it will continue to extend its help to a wider area in the future. It makes me very proud to have been involved in achieving so much and building so many friendships along the way. Summer seems to have flown by and here we are in November, with the long warm days of summer behind us, and steadying ourselves for the colder and wetter weather that takes us to Christmas and into the New Year. Halesworth is fortunate in having a warm room, and Halesworth Area Community Transport (HACT) tries its best to make sure our customers also have a warm bus to take them to and from town. Our drivers get the buses heaters working as soon as they're on board doing their daily safety checks, knowing that for those waiting for a bus, there's nothing better than getting onto a warm, dry, friendly bus. At this time of year, it's interesting to hear about some of the lovely presents our customers have found in Halesworth's many independent shops. Often our regulars take several visits into the town centre to seek out of the ordinary gifts for family and friends. When shoppers find they have heavier bags than they had planned, the Hoppa is there to take them home. A frequent

refrain we hear is "I don't mind walking down the hill into town, but the walk back is too much." That is especially true if you're loaded down with shopping. Don't forget we'll get you as close as we can to your door if you have heavy or awkward bags to carry, and if you want to request a bus to stop for you close to your home, you can call our office Monday to Friday mornings on 01986 875900. This is the time of year when local groups look to hire the Hoppa to get them to Christmas lunches and dinners. One regular favourite is a 'Dave's Days Out' event which over the past few years has taken a group of Hoppa regulars to The Maybush in Waldringfield for a very tasty Christmas Lunch, overlooking the beautiful river Deben. Call the office any weekday morning before 12pm if you'd like to find out more about booking the Hoppa for a Christmas function. Finally, make sure you look out for next month's Community News which will have the details of which services will be running over Christmas and the New Year.

Nursery's harvest celebration

Look at our giant pumpkin!

Performing nursery rhymes

What's been happening at Ringsfield, Brampton and Bramfield Schools? have been busy learning nursery rhymes and decided that they wanted to put on a show for their friends and teachers. They set up a seating area using the crates in our outside area. Next, they made tickets adding numbers on to show the cost, Mrs. Bedwell found them a stamp so that one of them could be the ticket stamper! Once all the tickets were stamped, they sat down to watch their friends perform. The children took it in turns to be the audience and the performer and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They are definitely natural performers! At Ringsfield, we have been celebrating harvest and the whole school went to the church for a special service. Every class performed a song or poem for the parents and were encouraged to bring food to donate to the Waveney Foodbank. The generosity was amazing! The Nursery also had their own harvest celebration at school with parents. There were lots of exciting harvest activities, including making autumn leaf

wreaths, exploring farming through sensory small world play and performing autumn songs. The children also donated some food for the foodbank. If you are looking for a Nursery place for your child, we accept children with a 30 hour code. We also have an afternoon sessions for two year olds and

accept golden tickets. If you'd like to come and view our Nursery setting, please call 01502 713030 or email: office.ringsfield@ greatwoodsprimary.org

This month at Bramfield, we have been busy harvesting all our fruits and vegetables. Throughout the year our 'Guardians of the Garden' put lots of time and effort into weeding, planting and watering a whole host of crops for the school and local community to enjoy. Some of the vegetables are used in the school kitchen, and any left-over produce is offered to families to make use of at home. The children in reception have been foraging for blackberries and picking apples in our orchard. We used our blackberries to make tasty blackberry ice cream and the apples we turned into a delicious apple crumble. Our prize crop though was an enormous pumpkin, which weighed more than the children! We have used this to inspire some of our own story telling, based on Cinderella and her pumpkin carriage, which has really captured the children's imaginations. The children at Brampton have settled into school life fantastically and have made some lovely friendships. They

As reported in the last edition of the Community News, The Old Hall Café and Maze Southwold held a 'Maze by Torchlight' event for us in September. We are delighted to say that the evening raised £1,239.80. We are very grateful to Bella, and everyone associated with The Old Café as they very generously donated all the entrance money to Cancer Research.

We had such lovely comments about the evening and we (the Cancer Research team) and the Old Hall staff had such a fantastic time that when Bella suggested that maybe we do it again next year, it was a resounding yes! We have a very tentative date of August 30th, 2024. So if you didn't manage to come this year, we hope more of you will come along in 2024 and enjoy a

magical, fun evening for all the family. We have been very fortunate as Wenhaston Flower Club also held an event for us. On October 3rd they had their annual Charity Night. Thank you Jackie for organising this and raising an amazing £1,412.59. Some of the ladies on the Cancer Research committee also attend the flower club and they put on some of the usual stalls, whilst some of the other flower club ladies who were very talented in a variety of crafts, each had a stall and Jane Bastow provided a very popular plant stall. It was a lovely evening and everyone enjoyed the delicious refreshments provided by the ladies in the kitchen. Thank you Jackie and Wenhaston Flower Club and also everyone who came and supported us on the night. By the time you read this, our Jumble Sale will have taken place and I will let everyone know how we got on in the next edition of the paper. We have one last event this year, our very popular Christmas Fair in Holton Village Hall on November 18th (please see our advert on page 15). We offer a warm welcome to everyone, so please come and support us and stay for lunch to catch up with old friends or make new ones. November is just around the corner, the nights are starting to draw in and, following a warm start to autumn, the woolly jumpers are back out again as the temperature begins to drop. This all means only one thing... Christmas is on the horizon. One of the best things about this time of year has to be the opportunity to get together with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues and enjoy some good food and a glass or two of your favourite tipple. spoon over cider vinegar and a splash of water. Cook on high for 6 hours, or low for 8. - Once cooked and slightly cooled, shred the turkey. (Alternatively, use leftover precooked and shredded turkey). - Pre-heat your oven to 200°C. - To assemble the Wellington, place one sheet of puff pastry onto a lightly greased baking sheet and spoon on a layer of stuffing evenly in the centre. Ensure you leave 5cm from short edges and roughly 8cm at long edges. - Layer shredded turkey then finish with Classic Cranberry Sauce on top. Do not press into turkey. - Brush round the outside of pastry layer with egg. Lift the second piece of pastry and place on top of the turkey, pressing the pastry over the sides. Trim the pastry joins to about 4cm and seal the edges with the back of a fork. Brush all over with the remaining beaten egg. Use a sharp knife and carefully make diagonal slits into the pastry, ensuring not to cut through. - Cook for 30-35 minutes. The pastry should be golden and crisp. - Allow the meat to rest for 10 minutes before serving.

We were somewhat relieved to learn that the early death of the principal "witchfinder" prevented more miscarriages of justice! Our Charity Night on October 3rd was a huge success and a very enjoyable evening. This year, we raised an incredible £1412.59 for The Halesworth Branch of Cancer Research. We are so grateful to everyone who came along on the night to support our efforts to raise funds for this vital charity and also to those who sent a donation, it was so generous of you all. We hope you had a great time. I would like to thank everyone who helped on the night, with a special thank you to the ladies in the kitchen who kept everyone fed and watered all night. Thank you to everyone who baked and donated raffle or tombola prizes. As well as the usual Cancer Research stalls, the Flower Club members displayed their talents with a variety of beautiful craft

stalls and Jane Bastow had her very popular plant stall. Everyone did brilliantly and the stalls looked lovely. Sadly, Jean (our founding member) wasn't with us this year as she's been a bit poorly but her daughter Jan came and said "she is making excellent progress and she hopes to be back with you all soon". We all sent her love and best wishes. Our next meeting is on November 7th at Wenhaston Village Hall at 7:30pm. We are delighted to welcome Amie Galione who will be giving a demonstration entitled 'Sustainable Christmas'. It's just £5 on the night which includes tea/coffee and biscuits. Holton & Blyford Village Hall Tote winners The Southwold New Year's Day C major K.545, which the through TicketSource via the

New Year's Day Concert 2024 concert returns on January 1st, 2024 with a performance of Beethoven's triumphal 'Emperor' Piano Concerto at 3pm in St. Edmund's Church, Southwold. Southwold pianist Nathan Williamson will be joined by a professional ensemble led by distinguished violinist Michael Dolan in a rarely heard arrangement of the Concerto for piano and strings. The programme will also contain Mozart's famous Sonata in

composer labelled (with his tongue firmly in his cheek) 'For Beginners'. It's one of the most familiar and iconic pieces of the classical piano repertoire. We might not like to admit it, but New Year's Day can be a bit of a bore, there's not a lot to do other than recover from the previous evening's festivities, go for a walk, and end up in front of the telly. An hour-long matinee of live music is the perfect foil to the sense of anti-climax! Tickets are available

links on our website. www. southwoldmusictrust.co.uk or by phone 0333 666 4466. You can also buy on the door, but seating will be reserved and demand is expected to be very high, so booking in advance is highly recommended to secure the best seats. All proceeds will go to the Southwold Music Trust. More information and updates via the Southwold Music Trust website, as well as Facebook and Twitter/X.

Dr. Thérèse Coffey visits Holton Pits application from the very start, and her support has been important, not only for the COF funding, but also for other funding streams and to the local community. In addition to the well-documented benefits for people, open spaces such as Holton Pits provide vital green infrastructure benefits such as enhancing biodiversity and mitigating climate change. Holton Pits exhibited and talked at the recent highly successful Halesworth Climate Action

Conference (www.halesworthash. com). Dr Coffey said: "This is fabulous news for regular users of Holton Pits and the wider community. Huge congratulations to the whole team behind the CIC for putting so much effort into the local fundraising and their clearly very strong application. I'm very pleased that Holton Pits will now be in the hands of local people for local people." www.holtonpits.uk

End of the season at Halesworth Angels Bowls Club The 2023 season ended with a "Super Sunday" Aussie Pairs competition which was won by Chris Pepper and Anne Burnside. Margaret Dennis was awarded the high performance cup. There was a marvellous buffet and an entertaining performance by the Halesworth Strummers Ukulele Band.

During the Finals Weekend, spectators watched some closely-contended matches with Gary and Sandy Lindsay almost sweeping the board winning six competitions between them. Anne Burnside won the ladies two wood and Don Cheese won a handicap singles competition. Nick Gardener won the novices cup and still had the energy to

produce succulent produce from the barbecue. Work has already begun on the green in readiness for next season. There will be another open weekend in April. New and experienced bowlers will be welcome. For further information, please contact Ben Cardwell on: 01986 873352.

cannot be in two places at the same time. Chris and Elaine made it to round two of the senior pairs at Skegness but sadly lost 1711. Still a very good effort and a big well done to Chris and Elaine for getting there in the first place. Chris, Elaine and Kim were in the open triples. There were four teams who won all four matches but the Wenhaston lot triumphed on shots. In the Suffolk ladies games at Skegness, the Donald Steward and the Jubilee Vase Wenhaston were represented by Elaine Peck, Lesley Dyer, Paula Gooch and Lesley Alexander as part of these teams. The Donald Steward lost but the Jubilee Vase team won and are national champions. If you are a local business and would like to sponsor our wonderful club, please get in touch by emailing: jake.moyes9@gmail.com. Sponsorship is £150 for the first year (inclusive of the price of getting the board made, all we need is the design) then £75 per year thereafter.

Members were not only able to enjoy the lovely aromas while watching an excellent cookery demonstration by Jane Sago entitled 'Simply Delicious', but then had an opportunity to taste vegetarian goulash, coconut rice and lemon curd syllabub. They were declared scrumptious, just three of the dishes that Jane prepared. There were recipe sheets handed out for members to go home and try the dishes out themselves. We are now looking forward to our October county events, a literary lunch and an autumn meeting at The Riverside Centre, Farnham, both with good speakers. Also getting in some exercise with the WI Kurling afternoon at the Rifle Hall.

What a year Wenhaston Bowls Club has had! 1st place in the Lowestoft League (for the sixth year in a row) captained by Chris Peck, first place in the Halesworth 3-wood league captained by Elaine Peck, second place in the Sax league captained by Kevin 'Wink' Canham and forth place in the extremely competitive Bowls England league captained by Malcolm Napthine. Well done to Chris, Elaine, Wink, Malcolm and all this year's bowlers. Outside of the league games, Wenhaston has been successful within the county. Chris and Elaine Peck and Kim Dyer all made it to this year's federation national finals in Skegness after winning their matches in the county finals. Elaine was at Skegness as county champion in the 4 wood singles but unfortunately lost her first round match. Elaine was also runner up in the Bowls England 4 wood singles and qualified for Leamington. Unfortunately due to the BE and EBF finals clashing on dates she had to withdraw from the Leamington finals as she

in the villages. For fear of the Lord identifying the miscreants and therefore holding back on the largesse, the dancers would disguise themselves with faces covered in daubed soot and ashes grabbed from the fireplace. They would never be seen smiling because the gaps in the teeth acted like barcodes for identity, the dancing was rough and physical (unlike Morris dancing which was practiced all year round), with heavy hob-nailed boots adding to the percussive elements found in the tunes the musicians played. In Old Glory, the men dance to the women's tune, after dark, under burning torches, whilst a boxman circulates amongst the audience cadging donations which, in this century, are donated

to local charities and don't find their way into the pockets of Old Glory families unlike those of the poverty stricken plough boys 200 years ago. Legend has it that if a bystander avoided donating, they found their front garden ploughed up come the next morning, mercifully another aspect of the history that no longer takes place. Or not yet, anyway. In the 2022-23 season, Old Glory danced and played out at 13 pubs from December through to January and were invited to the famous Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival. They managed to raise an astonishing £2,000 due to the generosity of the crowds who gather at such events as Samhain (Halloween) and Plough Monday in Rumburgh, A Village

Wassail in Sweffling; Pakefield Oddfellows Beer Festival and the Winter Solstice at the Geldeston Locks Inn amongst several other appearances. The total has been divided up into four lots of £500 and donated to the Halesworth Area Community Transport; Emmaus in Ditchingham; the Waveney Food Bank and the appeal to rebuild the chancel wall in Rumburgh Church. Rumburgh is the unofficial headquarters of Old Glory who meet in the village hall there for rudimentary rehearsals in the first week in October. Anyone interested in joining either dancers or musicians should get in touch with Old Glory via: www.old-glory.org.uk Walt Tserr

The East Anglian tradition of Molly dancing thrives in the form of Old Glory, a Rumburgh-based troupe of dancers and musicians who ended their 29th season last January with substantial donations to local charities collected from the generosity of the public audience. Historically, the Molly was born out of agricultural workers who relied on the largesse of the Lord and Lady of the manor throughout December and January when the fields were frozen and waterlogged and no work was to be found until February when ploughing started the season again. Such a fragile existence would be boosted by public donations after song and dance

We will be collecting money but will NOT be knocking on doors. We will have just a few Rotarians with the sleigh, with collecting buckets. A current snapshot of items waiting to go back to their owners ranges from a Georgian door lock to a 1990's CD player, via a card table, barometer and a cuddly toy. We have more stuff to mend than people to mend it, and though it's not a bad problem to have, you can see we need all kinds of people to help out. So whatever your expertise or skill level, there's bound to be a role for you. Just as important as repair work is the admin side of things. As the Shed develops, there will be more sessions in the week, so people can help out at a time which suits them best. On a personal level, it's a chance to acquire and

develop skills, and work with like-minded individuals. The purposeful work makes for fun and fulfilling sessions. But it's also part of a wider movement towards sustainability and reducing waste. We can all play a part in that. Get in touch. For more information, visit our website: www.suffolkrepairshed.org or email: hello@suffolkrepairshed.org. Tax benefits and the festive spirit

Charity Christmas Card Shop opens in Woodbridge The traditional Charity Christmas Card Shop in Woodbridge opens at HSBC, 37 Thoroughfare, Woodbridge, IP12 1AH, on October 23rd. The shop is organised by Woodbridge 41 Club, and proceeds are used to support local charities and other good causes. The 41 Club organiser, Roger Parker commented: "We're looking forward to a great season selling cards and supporting many very worthwhile causes. Sending a Christmas card is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. I am very grateful to all the volunteers and customers who

support the shop." The shop stocks the largest selection of charity cards in Suffolk from over 20 different charities. This includes favourites such as: RNLI, Marie Curie Cancer, Barnardos, Blue Cross and Amnesty. Additional local charities include: St. Elizabeth Hospice, East Anglian Children's Hospices, Somersham Ward, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Suffolk Wildlife Trust. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, (9:30am to 5pm on Saturdays). Please do visit, you won't find a better selection!

As the holiday season approaches, many businesses are preparing to celebrate the festive period with their employees. From decorating the office to hosting memorable end of year parties, these seasonal festivities can also bring about some tax benefits that you may or may not be aware of. Trivial tax benefits are small perks that employers can provide to their employees without them incurring additional tax liabilities. These benefits are often seen to boost morale, improve workplace culture, and show appreciation to the workforce. Whilst these perks may not seem significant individually, they can add up and provide savings for both employers and employees. For businesses, hosting an annual party can be a taxdeductible expense if the 'annual function exemption' criteria are met. To qualify for this generous tax benefit, the event must be available to all employees and the cost per head must not exceed £150 (including VAT). This includes travel, accommodation and other associated costs that contribute to the fun! Employees will also benefit

from this as it will allow them to attend a festive celebration without worrying about additional tax liabilities. It's a brilliant way for employers to express gratitude to their hardworking teams. Annual parties aren't the only way to enjoy trivial tax benefits. Other common perks include small gifts, such as a hamper, a bottle of wine or a non-cash voucher, that can be given to employees. These gifts are exempt from Income Tax and National Insurance contributions if the cost of the benefit does not exceed £50 per employee (including VAT) and is not cash or a cash voucher. It is also important that the benefit is not provided as part of any contractual obligation or, in recognition of the employee's good performance in the workplace. In most instances, an employee can receive multiple trivial benefits throughout the year, as long as each one does not exceed the limit individually. However, where the employer is a close company, the exemption is capped at a total cost of £300 per tax year where the benefit is provided to an individual who is a director or other office holder

of the company (or a member of their family/household). You must take care not to go over the limits mentioned above, as even doing so by just a nominal amount, will mean you can no longer claim the tax exemptions. If you do overspend, the entire cost will be taxable rather than just the excess or the limits specified. By understanding HMRC's allowance and leveraging trivial tax benefits, you can save money, and enhance your employee satisfaction. For further information, please contact Chrissie Turnbull (pictured) on: chrissie.turnbull@ ensors.co.uk Specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.

Maintenance on the Green with White Bridge closed Since the 1770s when the New Reach waterway was dug for wherry traffic, there has always been a bridge at White Bridge. Was the bridge just for foot traffic? No... It's always been wide enough to accommodate passage by whoever owned the land on either side to cross with a cart, horse and other land management equipment. The current bridge is the latest in that long 250-year line of "accommodation" bridges. The landowner on both sides is now Halesworth Millennium Green Trust, which is the charity that holds the land for the local community. The volunteers who maintain the Green for you need to be able to get across the New Reach with mowers and other tools to keep maintaining the paths so that you can use them. We also need to keep the habitats in good heart for wildlife by haymaking and other conservation work. No need for horses and carts nowadays, just mowers and fully laden wheelbarrows, but these are

wider than simple foot traffic. So, the community needs White Bridge replaced like-for-like and we know that Suffolk County Council, who are responsible for the bridge, has embraced that need. Meanwhile, with the bridge closed, and after such a warm and wet growing season, the volunteers know that everywhere on the Green is a bit more wildand-woolly than usual. We'll keep on doing what we can within the restrictions of not being able to cross the bridge with equipment and we look forward to the day when the closure of White Bridge is a distant memory. Do keep letting us know of any exciting sightings. Have a look at the website (millenniumgreen. halesworth.net) which carries news and information, photos, wildlife records, history and geology. You can contact the Green directly on: thegreen@ halesworth.net and, please only in an emergency, on: 07743 772029.

Panel audience

Rebecca Osborne

Halesworth Climate Action Conference review Halesworth’s first ever Climate Action Conference took place from September 29th to October 1st, with enormous success.

Zoo, who brought along lion poo and great snake skins. This is the generation who will feel the effects of our actions today.

• Richard Rout (Suffolk County Council Deputy Leader & Cabinet Member for Finance & Environment).

Unusual for a climate gathering, one of its four parts was a sell out. It comprised of a week-long exhibition showcasing local groups either mitigating climate change or scrutinising development that challenged climate change, to which local schools were invited to for a day; a panel discussion in the ‘Any Questions’ format; a day-long conference with experts in diverse fields sharing their experience; and finally, a ‘What next’ meeting on Sunday, in which a committed group of people proposed three future strategies.

The ‘Any Questions Panel’ on Friday night was a sell out:

• Josaih Meldrum (Co-founder of Hodmedods, a business that supports farmers as they bring diversity to their arable crop rotations).

If it’s about numbers, over 200 people came to the Friday Night Panel discussion, which was covered by Look East early evening news so was seen by many more. Over 300 people have watched the live recording on YouTube. Over 100 people came to the Saturday Conference and our website had over 2,000 hits over the weekend. We had no idea that climate would be so upper most in peoples minds. Both the Town Council and Blyth Valley Churches (the joint organisers) were delighted with the response, and are already planning a follow up series of events. www.halesworthash.com An Exhibition: Under the church arches, running for a week, there were 25 individual exhibitors, showcasing local projects and a science corner. Some groups met up for the first time and connected. It was creative, with information displayed on bicycle wheels (by the Millennium Green which encompasses Sustrans Route 1), and an exhibition of photographs together with a looped film by Bill Jackson. A White Elephant encompassed Sizewell development, and LionLink’s map displayed the potential effect of diverse energy developments along the Suffolk Coast. Swift calls could be heard echoing around the space.

Aided by much media attention, the church was full, standing room only. It was a lively discussion with “an august and impressive panel” as described by Bishop of Edmondsbury, who chaired with grace and knowledge. As he said at the end, the audience had made their feelings felt in many different ways. The panel included the Secretary of State for Environment and our local MP, Dr Thérèse Coffey and Adrian Ramsay, co-leader of the Green Party and standing as the Green Party candidate for the new Waveney Valley constituency. These two enjoyed a few spats particularly over high e-coli count in the Blyth river water. Thérèse Coffey (who had earlier visited the nearby Holton Pits as she’d been supportive of their successful bid for Community Ownership Funding) praised the local community for their work to save this open space. Reverend Dominic Doble opened the conference, setting the tone, urging us to agree to disagree with an open mind and kindness and learn from each other's diverse views. BBC Look East covered the build up in the 6pm news. Professor Peter Hobson was replaced at the last minute by Darren Tansley from Essex Wildlife Trust, fresh from discussing climate change with farmers along the Stour Valley. Eight questions were distilled from many submitted. The panel included: • Dr Thérèse Coffey (Secretary of State for Environment, Conservative MP for Suffolk Coastal). • Darren Tansley (Essex Wildlife Trust).

Free trees were given away by Halesworth Town Council, who were also creatively promoting ‘reused banners turned into bags’. The Repair Café mended and sewed throughout the week.

• Adrian Ramsay (Co-leader of the Green Party). Adrian currently leads MCS Charitable Foundation which advocates for renewable energy and green homes.

Schools came on Friday:

• Professor Catherine Rowett (County Councillor for West Depwade, former Member of the European Parliament for East of England and campaigner for solar on Churches and community energy schemes).

Over 100 school children and staff were creatively entertained and challenged by Reverend Alison Alder for a day. They contributed to a Tree of Hope, with desires such as: “I hope the polar bears can stay where they belong”, and “I hope the sycamore grows back and people stop chopping down trees.” The star of the show was a display by Banham

• David Kemp (Environment Agency), Coastal Team Leader (coastal flood warning and resilience) ‘The Eastern Front of Climate Change’.

The Conference - All day, September 30th: After the theatre, this was the meat of the weekend. With over 25 practitioners, describing a wide range of projects ongoing to mitigate climate change, from individual solar panels on homes, to county-wide initiatives. Over 100 people attended, a remarkable feat in itself. This shows the community were keen to learn and understand this often complex effect on us. Joyce Moseley (Chair of Halesworth Town Council) opened the conference, emphasising that this was for the local community. What can we do to mitigate climate change, in our own homes and our lives? Claire Ling from Suffolk Climate Change Partnership became known as ‘Ask me Claire’, passionately urging us to tap into the range of opportunities offered by the Partnership. We learned what support was available and what councils can do. East Suffolk Environment Councillors past and present (James Malinder and Rachel Smith-Lyte) cohosted a session outlining past and present initiatives. Who knew James had set up the Environment department, and successfully initiated “Pardon the Weeds”, called a climate emergency, and started to introduce electric Council vehicles? Rachel SmithLyte outlined her focus for the future... Saving and planting trees, retrofitting insulation to council houses, to walking cycling strategy.

• Reduce carbon out: When it comes to home energy, perhaps like many, we wondered what is for the best? Insulation or Services first? Perhaps Peter Miller and ‘Ask Me Claire’ could help? • Increase carbon in: How to encourage greater carbon sequestration/protect open spaces. • Motivate: How can we continue to be motivated and move forward? Conclusion: The whole conference was captured graphically by Rebecca Osborne. Concentrating for over six hours, she captured each speaker’s message (with their portrait), in remarkable drawings. This is reminder of what was said, as well as a spring-board to what we will do; it is a remarkable testament and our legacy. It was an inspiring event for Halesworth Town Council and Blyth Valley Churches. It was important for the community to hear these options, to engage in this vital and life changing conversation, to feel a part and to be informed. Present at the conference were two representatives from Wymondham, who relayed that they’re planning just such a conference for their town. It was the Climate Action conference in Woodbridge which inspired us to have this. So, the baton is passed. For now, and following in Woodbridges footsteps, we have plans to keep up the momentum with regular events, sub groups and continued connection. What next? Out of the conference, three distinct groups have formed.

Catherine Rowett (who is campaigning for solar panels on churches) asked “Who will take up this baton?” We learned about solar on sports clubs and on Kings College Cambridge.

1. Halesworth Ash (An umbrella group), coordinated by Halesworth Town Council and Blyth Valley Churches to oversee future events and distribute information.

A highlight was Professor Peter Hobson, who was live-streaming, talking from his home as he was suffering from Covid. He shocked us with photographs of this years die-back in German forests. A land ethic, he concluded, depends on our view, quoting Aldo Leopold: “When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”

2. Halesworth Community Energy Group Steering Group has formed. Our aims would be to engage the community in measuring the thermal efficiency of our homes, developing plans to de-carbonise housing stock. We would work with existing groups in the area and take forward the environmental aspects of the neighbourhood plan. We are talking thermal imaging, insulation, air-source heat pumps. Interested? Please contact Chris. Details on: www.halesworthash.com

Wil Harvey and Eamonn O’Nolan revealed the results of their recent water sampling along the Rivers Deben and Blyth. (Something perhaps we’d rather not know about, especially if we are wild swimmers?) An impressive gaggle of groups protecting open spaces (Halesworth Millennium Green, Holton Pits, many groups from Wenhaston, and two groups from Bramfield) described their successful projects to increase biodiversity and increase tree and hedge cover. Isabel Losada woke us up after tea with a dynamic call for us to “CHANGE YOUR BANK”, and stop buying clothes, among many other practical ways we could ourselves have a positive impact on climate change. Phil Bull described in useful detail how he installed solar on his own home, Peter Miller challenged some of the misconceptions over air source heat pumps. The conference ended with Eamonn O’Nolan, describing the journey Woodbridge had taken since their conference, two years ago, its successes and failures. “First start with a conference” he said. We did.

ASH Conference Panel

sparked them, and what they’d like to happen next.

On Sunday, a group met to discuss ‘What Next?’ Fired up with the ideas from Saturday, people met on Sunday to reflect on the conference and say what

3. An Open Space Group is to meet with Alan Miller to link the open spaces initiatives together and share knowledge and expertise. If anyone is interested in joining these groups or wish to start other initiatives, please let us know. We have work to do!

Suffolk FA awarded 07818 568435 Halesworth Town Juniors with harry@agrifencesuffolk.co.uk the 'Junior Club of the Year 22/23' award. Road was used by the juniors many years ago. After contacting the FA and getting approval from the landlords, HCSL, they were given permission to re-use the site following a risk assessment and guidelines, one of which was to have safety netting along the roadside. Halesworth Golf Club very kindly offered to fund the netting, for which the club are immensely grateful. With the netting on order, work got underway with Jud and Trevor Chenery putting in many hours over the summer preparing the ground. Woolnough Contractors cleared the rough edges and skimmed down the nettles. Harry Holmes moved top-soil to the site and dug the post holes for the socketed roadside netting. Steven Thurston levelled the top-soil and cleared the boundary sidelines. Next, Craig Stammers kindly measured out the pitch and once this was marked out, the goals were transported to the site, by Hinsley Transport. A portaloo was supplied by Solebay Waste & Recycling and the netting was delivered! A shout was put out and a group of parents and volunteers rallied round to erect the net. This was a fabulous site, having everyone pull together! The club would like to thank everyone that helped. Halesworth Town Juniors are very excited to breathe life back into the old site and the 2 under U11 teams and U12s are now enjoying using the site for their training sessions and home matches. The turnout for these matches has been superb and the support from the public has been exceptional. The club are very grateful for the positive attitude from the whole community and is delighted to be able to provide

these excellent football sites and pitches for over 100 children. For a small town having 9 junior teams, a ladies and 2 senior teams is something the town should be very proud of. All of this is the reason they were awarded 'Junior Club of the Year 22/23' from Suffolk FA. Everyone within the club from the Club Secretary to the committee members, who work tirelessly behind the scenes, and managers and coaches to parents, grandparents and players should be very proud of what they've achieved. All our managers have completed their FA Level 1 training, without them and our coaches, match days (including running the line and refereeing) and training would not happen. 8 teams have had new kits this season, the club are very grateful to our sponsors: DB Renovations, EDF, Halesworth Golf Club, The Pear Tree Fund, Broadway Colours, Hetty's Little Copy Shop and Spectra. Thanks to Gowing Engineering for sponsoring the training tops for all players, and to the individual sponsors for teams' raincoats including: Teasels Landscapes, Hinsley Transport, Gentlemen's Row, B R Home Improvements, DB Renovations, DXB Pump & Power, TP Plumbing & Heating. Donations: Fancy getting involved? Halesworth Town Juniors have 3 sites to run, Westhall, Dairy Hill and the Basley playing field, this takes a lot of time and funds. If you'd like to make a monetary donation or offer to help in any way, please contact Kathryn Bullen (Junior Club Secretary) on: halesworthtownjuniors@ hotmail.co.uk Claire Chenery, Chair of HTJFC, 07935 109049
