Opening times until further notice 10am-3pm Mon-Sat (closed on Thursdays)

It's fair to say the last twenty months have been challenging for us all. We've seen the world in the grip of a pandemic that changed life as we know it. There was the 'stay at home' order, followed by strict instructions to wear face masks and keep sociallydistanced from friends, family and neighbours. We did what we had to do to keep loved ones and the wider community safe and though the pandemic is still very much with us, we have seen life begin to return to something that is beginning to resemble the prepandemic world. What has been evident throughout is the sense of community spirit that has seen neighbours checking in with

one another, family members reaching out via video calls, and local businesses and volunteers working tirelessly to ensure those that are not able to get out to the shops didn't go without any essentials - be it food, or perhaps just as importantly, human interaction. We are so fortunate to live where we do. On our doorstep we have great businesses catering for our every need,

volunteer groups helping to take this opportunity to wish members of our community you all a fantastic Christmas and who may be vulnerable or at healthy and happy new year. risk of becoming isolated, and All the best, David, Karen, Polly, Lauren & Jared (the wonderful neighbours, colleagues and friends who have played their Community News team) part in getting us all through this tough time. As we move towards the end of the year, please do continue to support the businesses that we have come to rely on over the last couple of years. Finally, we'd like

The latest in a series of local projects to see the rewards of funding from Durrants Charitable Foundation is Owlets Preschool in Ilketshall St Lawrence, who have recently completed the installation of an all-weather canopy. The canopy was installed in October to enable children to enjoy time outdoors and remain protected from the elements. Fresh air has of course, always been important for children, but the pandemic and the need for social distancing and well-

ventilated areas has made this essential. On Wednesday 10th November, Durrants' Communications Manager (Sally Owen) went to meet the team at Owlets to see the results of their contribution. "Durrants are delighted to support so many local projects that benefit the local community. On a drizzly day like today, you can really see how the new canopy at Owlets will be important for both the children and staff here." The project was also supported by other generous donors including East Suffolk County Council, The Tudwick Foundation and Alpkit foundation. "It's so important for children to be able to enjoy time outdoors, but when the weather is inclement, or even if the sun is too hot, it's vital to have some shelter to protect the youngsters." Commented Jo-Anne Aulsberry (Manager of Owlets). "We're delighted with the canopy and are hugely grateful to all our supporters, including Durrants."

Wrentham Chapel

Caedmon at Christmas Wrentham Chapel will be hosting its regular 'Caedmon at Christmas' event on Tuesday 14th December, beginning at 7pm. This social event invites those attending, if they are so inclined, to bring along a contribution to the evening's entertainment. Readings, poems, music and songs will be combined into the programme on the night. They may be sacred or secular, serious or humorous and it will be mixed with opportunities to enjoy seasonal food and drink along with plenty of chat. There's no admission charge but there will be opportunity to donate to Christian Aid in a retiring collection.

Beccles Friends of Cancer Research UK The Beccles Friends of Cancer Research UK would like to thank the staff and customers of Roys and Tesco in Beccles who supported us recently in both stores when an amazing £331.23 and £292.70 respectively was raised for the vital work that is undertaken by Cancer Research

RAFA Wings Appeal Collection at Tesco's, Beccles On Saturday 27th November, the local Branch of the RAFA, repeated previous visits to the Tesco's Stores in Beccles to raise funds for the RAF Charity. The Branch President Brian Vousden said: "Once again, we were honoured to attend the Tesco's Stores to collect funds for our local RAF serving and veteran personnel and their families who may be having difficulties with meeting expenses at this time.

The RAF Association exists to provide support for those who served our Country, some of whom paid the "ultimate price". Our collection at Tesco's was a great success and we wish to thank the Manager and all the Staff and the many customers who were so generous to us on the day. We send our Christmas greetings to everyone and the very best for a happy and peaceful new year. Thank you all!"

At the beginning of the year, The Net Zero Leiston Project (NZL) approached AVA to raise awareness of their communityled project looking to reduce carbon emissions in Leiston-cumSizewell. The work conducted by Groundwork at AVA started with a full energy and waste audit in the school, which highlighted some recommendations for tackling energy inefficiency and carbon emissions. In parallel, a questionnaire was launched to all students which looked to indicate the climate change issues which were most important to them and to gauge the level of understanding of the topic in general. Sixteen enthusiastic students volunteered to become Green Guardians, which is a fantastic demonstration of how important climate change is to the students of AVA. All students were encouraged to look at their own family's carbon footprint and to discuss how this could be improved. EDF conducted sessions with Year 7 and 8 students to educate them about the NZL project and set the

UK. It was a wonderful way to end this year which has once again been tough for all of us. Whilst it's still uncertain what 2022 will bring, we've missed seeing all of our helpers and loyal supporters who have always made it possible for us to raise the funds needed to support Cancer

Research UK. We hope to be back planning several events but with everyones safety very much at the forefront. So do watch this space and we'll let you know when we are back in action! In the meantime, we'd just like to wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and a healthy new year!

students a competition to design a poster showing how the school could achieve the challenge. This resulted in AVA winning a top award for encouraging staff, students and their families to drive down to net-zero carbon. They were awarded The Greenest School in Suffolk at the Suffolk Greenest County Awards presented by BBC Radio Suffolk Presenter Mark Murphy. Student winners of the EDF competition accompanied Mr Mayhew, Headteacher, to the ceremony. Mr Mayhew commented: "I was really shocked to win this reward. It's not a case of changing your whole life. It's the little things that can make a big difference. At AVA, we've taken a three-pronged attack, encouraging students to take action at home and in school, created green guardian students and upgrading our school boiler." Students Rosie, Sisiley and Coco commented: "It was a really fun experience and inspiring to see what other groups and individuals had accomplished to help make Suffolk a greener County."

Ways you can make a positive difference to our local pet rescue charities this Christmas: Our Santa Paws Appeal helps local, registered pet rescue charities. It shares out all money raised throughout the year to charities nominated by our clients. Donations help to pay for heating, food, medication and much more. This money will be given out in January. Santa Paws Collection As always, we'll also be holding our Santa Paws collection of food, treats, toys, warm blankets and beds/bedding suitable for cats and dogs, collars, leads, food bowls. Wet or dry food is always needed but it should be unopened and in date. These items can be left in our reception and will be shared out

to local rescue centres just before Christmas so that they may be used over the holiday period. Dedicate a star to your pet Celebrate the life of a dear pet, past and present by dedicating a star on our virtual Christmas tree. Pets give us companionship and unconditional love and friendship every single day, and this a special way to honour them, something that'll help the pets who are not so lucky and don't have a home. There's no charge for dedicating a star to your pets, but a donation, however small, would make a big difference to our Santa Paws charities. To dedicate a star, go to: www.wangfordvet clinic.com/Celebrate. Animal Aid Auction This year, we've added an

auction to our fundraising. How it works People donate pet items they no longer need themselves but are still in good condition to our Charity Auction so that they can be enjoyed by someone else. Animal owners have the opportunity to purchase some new/nearly new items for their pets at amazing prices. It'll also help minimise waste and the resulting impact on our planet. ALL money raised by this charity auction goes to our Santa Paws Appeal and will be shared among local animal rescue charities who care for stray, injured and homeless animals and birds. For the auction, go to:

www.wangfordvet clinic.com/Auctions. If you'd like to simply donate to the appeal then you can go to: www.wangfordvet clinic.com/Charity. We'd love to see ALL pets experience the unlimited love and affection as our own, but sadly, many animals never get to experience the comfort and safety of a loving home. Any donation, however small will help to make a difference. Thank you. If you need any further information or know a charity that needs help, please call 01502 578999 or email: jill@wangfordvetclinic.com.

'Taming the Flood, a beavers' tale' - Presented by Darren Tansley and in March 2019, a beaver pair were introduced. They quickly set to work, establishing a system of dams, deep pools and side canals, creating a watery landscape. Dams begin as mud, to which small, then larger sticks, then logs are added. They leak, allowing water to disperse widely, absorbing flood waters in winter, and maintaining flow in summer. The beavers' huge lodge has an underwater entrance, making it

safe from predators, and where two kits were born in 2020. Water monitoring and testing is ongoing. Chemical pollution is captured as the water filters down. Run-off is slowed, and this is of particular importance to the village of Finchingfield below, which floods regularly. Initial monitoring shows that the beaver landscaping has modified the speed of flood water, making a significant difference to the

village. In addition, the beaver activity has encouraged a much wider diversity of wildlife, and the elusive water shrew has been filmed eating the freshwater shrimps there. Darren's talk generated lots of questions for discussion, and we all found it a thought-provoking topic. Our next meeting is at 7:30pm, Thursday 13th January. Our local Coastal Reserves Warden, Jamie

Smith, will be giving us the latest Local Reserve Roundup. It's at the Southwold Arts Centre, IP18 6JP. Entrance is £3 to include refreshment. Under 25's free. Contact us at: swtblythvalley@gmail.com.

At the November meeting of the Blyth Valley and Southwold Suffolk Wildlife group, Darren Tansley gave us an intriguing account of a beaver project in Essex. Beavers were plentiful throughout Europe following the last ice age, but they were hunted voraciously over the centuries for their fur and meat, and by the sixteenth century, they were extinct in Britain. Climate change and flooding has led to an interest in the concept of natural flood management, and of re-introducing beavers to assess their impact on river systems. There are about twenty five such projects currently in the UK, and Darren talked about the one at Spains Hall in Essex. It's a joint effort with various agencies to monitor the many effects of beaver activity. The landowner provided a wooded, enclosed site with a tiny stream,

Help us map Halesworth's treasures Kevin Vaughan (Chief Executive of the Pear Tree Fund) said: "We're really pleased to be hosting these innovative asset walks to give our community a chance to come together and explore the places and spaces which give meaning to their lives. We hope that the interactive map which we produce will be a really useful tool which will help lots of people in the future by directing them to the places which could boost their wellbeing and emotional health. We'd encourage anyone who'd

like to take part to wrap up warm and join us on the Thoroughfare for what promises to be a fascinating and worthwhile tour of our town." For more information about the Pear Tree Fund or to support the charity, visit: www.peartreefund.org.

Wenhaston Women's Institute The December meeting was by way of a treat following a difficult year. Members were treated to a cheese and wine evening with mince pies to follow by our committee. Such a treat to sit with friends and just chat about 'normal' things, but then came the entertainment!

Iestan Edwards told of how "His tutu went AWOL", a dancer/ singer and raconteur explained, to much laughter, how he ended up entertaining troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, becoming the first drag artist to become a mascot to the Royal Marines. A wonderful laughing way to finish the WI year!

are available locally to boost wellbeing. There was a walk earlier in the week which was arranged to coincide with grief awareness week, which ran until December 8th and sought to raise awareness of the needs of the bereaved and make sure they get the time and support they need to heal. The walks also come as part of the Pear Tree Fund's ongoing commitment to supporting people who have lost loved ones as well as those who have received a diagnosis or are at the end of their lives.

People living in Halesworth and the surrounding areas are being invited to join the Pear Tree Fund on a special walk to map out the local treasures which help them through tough times. Called an 'asset walk', the event will take place on December 15th starting at 10am in the Thoroughfare at the entrance to the middle car park. This has been arranged as part of the Pear Tree Fund's Compassionate Communities work and will give participants the chance to map the places and spaces, people and pastimes which help them through difficult periods and can improve their quality of life. This could include libraries, health centres, education facilities, leisure centres, cafes, restaurants, bus services, GP practices, shops, faith groups, charities, residents' associations, support groups, parks and open spaces. The information gathered will then be used to create an online community treasure map showcasing all of the assets which

The Pear Tree Fund

Holton and Blyford Village Hall Seasons greetings from A huge thank you to everyone who's supported the hall since our re-opening in September, both hirer's and attendees. We've loved seeing you and having the excitement of the hall alive and 'bouncing'. Bingo has brought out record attendance's, every other Thursday at 7:30pm. The Big Breakfast on the 1st Sunday of the month has attracted some new friends, and it's been a joy to welcome the old ones back. We've had a couple of Pop up Pubs, and last month, a Carols and Pints event with sausage rolls and raised voices in festive cheer! During the hectic preChristmas run up, a Craft Fair, Cancer Research Christmas

event and then the Holton Church Christmas Fair brought big crowds to the venue. Sadly, a problem with our drainage challenged us but with the help of Premier Toilets, we were able to stay open. During the pandemic, we've continued to run the Village Hall Tote. The December winners were the following: Dr W Pagan in 1st place, Mr and Mrs Hewlett in 2nd, Mr T Rust in 3rd and Mr R Barratt in 4th. The Tote raises money to keep the hall open and available for our community . The committee would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy new year and sincerely thank everyone for their support during the past challenging year.

Halesworth Dementia Carers' Fund Virtual marathon As a result of running in a virtual marathon, Karen Prime has donated a magnificent £2,451 to our fund. Her running buddy Teresa Utting also donated £1,130 to Dementia UK. Our work depends so much on donations and we can't thank these wonderful ladies enough for such a wonderful achievement, and to all who so generously sponsored them. January film Our next film (to be shown on 19th January) will be 'The Last Letter from Your Lover'. This is a lovely British romantic drama and is about a journalist who sets out to solve the mystery of a secret affair after finding a trove of missing letters. It'll be shown at The Cut as usual, and doors open at 1:45pm. Christmas tree The HDCF tree is on display in St. Mary's Church and is festooned with 'The Twelve Days of Christmas' decorations made by the HDCF Art Group. We do hope you'll be able to pop into the church and admire their work. 176755

Co-op collection By the time this goes to print, the members of HDCF and Southwold and District Rotary will have held a collection at the Halesworth Co-op. We're grateful for all donations, and also to the Co-op for allowing us to collect. It's been such a strange year for everyone but the work of the HDCF has carried on throughout. We couldn't do our work without all your wonderful support in so many ways. Our grateful thanks go to each and everyone of you who have done so much to help us in so many ways. On behalf of the whole HDCF committee, I wish everyone of you and truly peaceful and blessed Christmas, and a very happy and healthy new year.

and housing, while the charity has liaised with his family and provided support for his mum. John has also benefitted from counselling, while the Pear Tree Fund organised transport to and from hospital to prevent him from having to drive. Keen to say thank you, John has gone onto design an image of a partridge in a pear tree for the charity to use on Christmas cards to raise further funds and awareness. "The support I've received from the Pear Tree Fund has been life-changing," said John, who lives in Halesworth and is now helping set up a cancer support group at the Pear Tree Centre.

"The charity has given me care outside of my family and has made me feel less of an outsider, as serious long-term illness tends to make you feel. It has also helped promote community and a sense of inclusivity. I decided to donate my artwork as I wanted to give something back to the Pear Tree Fund to say thank you while helping to raise funds and awareness of this great charity, which is a lifeline to so many local people." John's cards are available from the Pear Tree Centre in Bungay Road, and Dee's Den in Steeple End, both of which are in Halesworth. They are priced at £3 for 10 and £5 for 20. All funds raised from their sale will be used to provide information, advice and support to people with a life-changing illness or long-term condition, as well as their families and carers. This includes a range of free services available from the Pear Tree Centre, such as wellbeing and bereavement support and help to live well in the community. Kevin Vaughan, chief executive of the Pear Tree Fund, said: "We are incredibly grateful to John for designing this fabulous piece for us to use on this year's charity Christmas card, and are delighted that the help we have been able to offer him has made such a difference. We would encourage anyone else who has a life-changing illness or long-term condition, or is caring for someone who does, to get in touch with us to find out more about the wide range of support we are able to offer when people need it the most." For more information about the Pear Tree Fund or to support the charity, visit: www. peartreefund.org. For more information about John's work, visit his website at: www.johnappletonart.co.uk.

A Suffolk artist has thanked the Pear Tree Fund for the "lifechanging" support he received during his cancer treatment by creating an original piece of artwork to appear on a Christmas card to raise money for the charity. John Appleton, 45, was diagnosed with myeloma in February. As his treatment took place during the Covid-19 lockdown, he struggled for several months to make the 45-minute journey to hospital alone - until his doctor referred him to the Pear Tree Fund. Since then, John has received emotional support, a listening ear and advice about benefits

Edgar Sewter Playschool and Out of School Club Edgar Sewter Playschool is open Monday to Friday (term time) for children from two years old with sessions between 9am and 3:30pm. We're an established Ofsted rated 'Good' setting and operate independently within the main Edgar Sewter School. Our setting is a registered charity and we have a parent-led Committee. We run our sessions with a small team of fully qualified, experienced early years staff. The children have been busy making 12 Drummers Drumming for the St Mary's Church Christmas Tree Festival along the theme of the 12 Days of Christmas. You can visit the trees displayed at the church throughout the festive period. Our cake stall on 27th November outside Cecil Amey Opticians was very successful and luckily, the storm didn't arrive until we'd sold out! Many thanks to all parents and Committee members of the playschool and out of school club for their baking and selling skills and for everyone who supported us. All fundraising goes into providing activities and

Phyllis Peck thanks her family and friends for their Christmas cards and wishes them a happy and health new year. A donation has been made to the Salvation Army in lieu of cards. Thank you for all the years of friendship.

Halesworth Strummers raise £312 for Children in Need Halesworth u3a ukulele group, the Halesworth Strummers, busked around Halesworth town on November 19th and raised £312 for Children in Need. Our thanks to the buskers and to all the folks in town who were so generous in their support. The Strummers are just one of our twenty plus activity groups, so do visit our website (www.u3asites. org.uk/halesworth/home) to find out about activities that would interest you. Last month, our members and guests enjoyed a talk by Tony Diamond at The Cut. Tony spoke about the Mayflower and the Pilgrim Fathers and the events leading up to their historic and perilous journey to the New World. Tony highlighted the prominence of East Anglia in so many historical events. Although it was a very entertaining presentation,

we were left admiring the bravery and determination of the Pilgrim Fathers and pondering about the suffering and division caused by religious intolerance. Our regular monthly events at The Cut are open to members and non-members (a small charge applies). Come along and enjoy a warm welcome, stimulating presentations and the friendly ambience of The Cut Cafe before and after meetings. On Tuesday 18th January at 2:30pm, we'll be at The Cut to hear from Richard Symes who farms locally, about working with Suffolk Wildlife Trust and others to develop new ways of farming to support our environment and wildlife. We look forward to our members and guests joining us for what promises to be a very interesting and topical presentation.

2022 and events in Halesworth the following weekend 17th and 18th September. Events at St Mary's Church were especially well attended last year with music, tours, and talks all weekend. The Cut will once again be Halesworth Heritage happening's HQ and will host events. The main auditorium will be showing short films, talks, and performances. All festival events are free for visitors which has been made possible with the generous support of Halesworth Town Council and our 2021 sponsors, Halesworth Print Finishers, Huus, and Micropress Printers. The events in 2021 received many generous donations and this will go towards the costs for next year. There's always more that we can do, so please support us in whatever way you can. We need committee members, volunteers, and sponsors again for 2022. We'll be announcing events in the Spring on the national website: (www.heritageopendays.org.uk) and keep an eye on Facebook (@ halesworthheritageopendays) for updates. To contact the committee, please email: simontooth@gmail.com.

172059

Halesworth Heritage happening last year was the third time Halesworth has taken part in the national Heritage Open Days festival. 2021 was extremely well received and attended. So much so that the committee have decided that Halesworth deserves an annual celebration, rather than every two years. Last year, the events expanded to Walpole and Holton in order to include some fascinating public buildings holding events and talks, and there are plans in 2022 to extend it to Blythburgh to show more of the rail heritage with support from the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway Society. The Society will lead guided walks around part of the Halesworth Millennium Green (the largest such Green in the country), highlighting the industrial archaeology of the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries: The 1761 Blyth Navigation and the 1879 narrow gauge Halesworth to Southwold Railway. We're looking forward to Halesworth Area Community Transport supporting the wider area with a minibus for the festival. In previous years, the celebration has been of our built environment with the opening of buildings not usually seen by the public. It's hoped that we can recommence with tours of private homes in 2022, alongside lots of outdoor events, with a programme of guided and self-guided walks. If you have a house or building of local interest that you'd consider opening, please let the committee know. Also new for 2022, the committee are working on events spanning two weekends with the sponsored Suffolk Historic Churches Trust 'Ride and Stride' on Saturday 10th September

10 - Christmas/January 2022 - Halesworth & Southwold Community News

The Locks Inn Community Pub at Geldeston has been working with Broads Authority officers Andrew Farrell and Lewis Treloar to install a disabled ramp. This will ensure that at anytime we have an emergency or need to have more access to the large room, we can offer good disabled facilities for our customers who may need it. We'd like to thank the Heritage Fund who have funded this ramp through the Broads Authority's Water, Mills and Marshes project and really appreciate all the support they have given to make this possible. Our location on the River Waveney makes it important that we work in partnership with the Broads Authority to ensure that our visitors and the local community have the services they need to

As we approach the festive season, the Town Council would like to thank all those volunteer groups in Halesworth that make a difference to people's daily lives. If you're able to give your time or something more tangible, they'd welcome your support. Most organisations can be found on our website: www. halesworthtowncouncil.org.uk or via Halesworth Volunteer Centre. Thank you to Halesworth Men's Shed who have made a lovely job of refurbishing the bench attached to the brick planter near the Council's notice board. They have also agreed to refurbish the other benches in the Thoroughfare with recycled plastic. By tackling these jobs, it helps keep the town looking smart and welcoming to both residents and visitors alike. At the monthly meeting on the 6th December, the Council agreed the membership of all its new standing committees. In future, the standing (permanent) committees will be: Planning and Highways, Leisure and Environment, Assets and Services and Finance and Governance. The restructuring and redefining the committee's responsibilities is an effort to make the decision making process more efficient. This is particularly important because in January, East Suffolk Council will finally decide whether the London Road building, the park, toilets and

various open spaces will be transferred back to the Town Council. If and when this occurs, the new committee structure will be well prepared to tackle the additional workload. The membership of all the committees and their respective chairs will be posted on the website shortly. A remainder that the town has had CCTV cameras in operation since January 2021. The police have used the video footage for crime-related incidents on several occasions since they've been installed and there's already been one prosecution this year. The cameras are not monitored by the Council, but if an incident is reported and a crime number is issued, then the police have access to the recordings. The results of the Campus/ CMC survey recently conducted by the Council on the latest planning applications on the former middle school site will

make their visit a memorable and positive experience. The pub has been open since May and now the cold weather has returned it is essential that we ensure good access to our indoor areas so that our visitors can enjoy the local beers, the music events and good pub food.

be available to view online on our website shortly. The Tamsyn Imison award for Halesworth Community project of the year is open for nominations for individuals or groups up until the 28th February, 2022. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the website or collected from the Library or the Council offices. When you're visiting our fantastic shops over the Christmas period, please follow the latest guidelines of the UK Government and help to keep the town a safe place for everyone to enjoy. The Clerks' office will be shut between Christmas and new year, reopening on the Wednesday 5th January. Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2022 from Halesworth Town Council.

We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you all in 2022

about myself as well. Wouldn't you agree that these should be the main reasons for participating in tournaments in the first place and not just about winning? As for my results, let's just say that I used to do reasonably well, especially as most of the time I had to compete against men in the various categories. I have a few gold medals hidden away in the cupboard somewhere." Those who benefitted from her proficiency in her chosen art and had their lives positively changed purely through knowing Alison, will never forget the kind, yet resilient lady, who lit the touchpaper which ignited their spark and enabled them to shine. In Alison's memory, Martin, Rachel and Jason set up a Just Giving Page to raise money to say an enormous thank you to the fabulous folks at St Elizabeth's Hospice at Beccles Hospital. So far, £4,342.00 has been raised, alongside condolence messages from around the world - stating how much Alison will be truly missed.

natural talent, which turned into a lifelong passion. Over the years, Alison's hard work and training resulted in her becoming a Master Instructor and National Champion. She firmly established herself as one of highest ranked females in Kuk Sool worldwide, and she achieved her 7th degree black belt in 2020 after forty years of practice. In 2007, a prominent UK martial art magazine interviewed Alison. The headline on the interview focused on her promotion to Master level and the questions probed her for career highlights, tournament results and details of memorable exhibitions, of which there were many. Her answers, however, provide more than a glimpse of her character and are full of selfeffacing grace, gentle humour, warmth, and style. When replying to a question about her success in tournaments, Alison said: "They were always great fun, and I learnt a lot about my art and

Alison was born in Holton, Suffolk on the 23rd April, 1966. From an early age, Alison's playful nature and great sense of humour was clear. The same was true of Alison's strength of character and throughout her school years - a short while at St. Lawrence Primary, followed by Edger Sewter Primary, Halesworth Middle and Bungay High. Alison left school and found work with Gee's Wholesalers. Through dedication and hard work (both inherent traits) Alison went from working in the warehouse to become Head Secretary. After meeting her future husband Martin at a local dance at the Halesworth rifle hall, they married at St Mary's Church, Halesworth in July 1984 and later, had two children, Rachel and Jason. Alison started practising Kuk Sool Won (traditional Korean martial arts) at the Beccles club when she was fifteen - fuelled by an obvious abundance of

Christmas/January 2022 - BecBun & LFW 8, Hales 12 Community News

Nestled away on the south side of Beccles at Hall Farm on London Road, you will find somewhere a little special... and unexpected. Clay Interiors are tile and natural stone suppliers and as you’ll see from the stunning photos on these pages, this is not your typical tile and flooring company. The business was started by Emma Rogers in 2015 when she began selling tiles from the back of her car. But, Emma always had a clear vision of where she wanted to be and once word began to spread that she had started her own business, customers and builders that she had worked with in previous employment started to contact her. Support and encouragement from this initial customer base gave Emma the confidence to open her own showroom. This was both daunting and exciting but driving Emma all the time was her clear vision and passion that her showroom was not going to be like any other generic tile showroom, but one that would reflect her personality and what she wanted her budding business

to be. Clay Interiors was born and the business and showroom you see today are a direct result of years of hard work, passion, dedication and a clear vision. Emma is joined in the business by her brother Adam and her sister Lizzy - the renowned trio are something of a dream team when it comes to all things tile and stone! The team have worked hard to create a unique place to shop for tiles. The 2,000 sq ft showroom has a wide selection of displays and samples so not only can you see the tiles in situ - you can touch them and get a feel for them. The layout of the showroom itself has also been carefully thought out to create an oasis of calm. This is really important as choosing the right tile is not straight-forward. Emma explains that often, by the time her clients are choosing their tiles, they have already had to make so many major decisions. So, offering a calm and inviting showroom with just the right amount of help and advice on hand is crucial. There’s one other rule and that is absolutely no hard sell,

the team are here to talk through ideas with a genuine interest in each individual project. It’s simple, they just love tiles! The showroom itself is simply stunning. It feels almost like a cross between a contemporary art gallery and a stylish up-market bar or hotel lobby. That said, there is no mistaking this is the place to be if you’re in the market for fabulous tiles and natural stone. Of course, a showroom is designed to showcase products that are on offer. Well, here you will find a superb selection of high-quality products that are primarily sourced from Italy, Spain and Britain. It’s fair to say you will not find these products anywhere else nearby, you might come across them in a London or Manchester showroom. This is partly due to Emma’s desire to use products you can’t find elsewhere – but mainly because the whole team very strongly believe in only selling good quality products. This means there is consistency of size, calibration and minimal repeat patterns, i.e. the end result will always be superb! That said, there

is a range of tiles to suit most budgets and this is something that the expert the team can always help with and working towards a set budget is not a problem. Something that has been important to Emma and the team is an eye on the future. This does not just mean the future of the business (though there is exciting news to follow!), it also means the future of the planet. We are all only too aware of the need to make changes in what we do and the team here are also very keen to increase their green credentials. To that end, their factory in Italy is almost entirely (90%) powered using renewable energy. This is something that the team will continue to monitor as they strive to reduce their carbon footprint over the coming months and years. Alongside their own Italian factories, you’ll find a selection of products from well-established suppliers including Ca’Pietra for whom Clay Interiors are a retail partner and leading stockist. A recent addition to the showroom has been the inclusion of home furnishings and lighting. As you might expect, these are

all in-keeping with the ethos of quality and individual style. The furnishings are all British-made and are attractively displayed to create numerous quiet seating areas. These serve a dual purpose, not only does it show off the gorgeous furniture at its best, it also creates a number of comfortable and quiet seating areas where customers and take their time browsing tile patterns, colour schemes and styles. With colour schemes in mind, sitting alongside the furnishings you will find a range of paints and wallpapers by Little Greene to enhance and complete your project. It’s amazing how much Clay Interiors has grown since being launched in 2015. The showroom is already big and full of lovely things. Well, watch this space... 2022 is set to be an exciting new chapter in the Clay Interiors story. As a teaser, I think we can say that you’ll soon find plenty more to see when you visit the showroom. Of course, the business has got to where it is thanks to the hard work and passion of Emma, Adam and Lizzy. Word has

spread of the showroom’s unique style, products and excellent customer service, so much so that customers regularly travel from as far as Cambridge, Colchester and Bury St Edmunds. Tiles are also shipped to homes in London as well as second homes here in East Anglia. Emma would like to say a huge thanks to everyone that has supported her over the years and particularly through the last eighteen months. Emma and her team at Clay Interiors have met the challenges of the last eighteen months head-on and now look forward to the next exciting period of growth for what is still a relatively new business. Most exciting of all it’s right here on our doorstep! The amazing showroom is open 9:30am-5pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am-4pm on Saturdays. Please do call in to come and have a chat about how they can help with any up-coming projects you may have. For any further details, visit www.clayinteriors.co.uk or call 01502 470157.

Please note: The showroom will be closed from 3pm on Wednesday 22nd December until 9:30am Tuesday 4th January.

People who use the Green are endlessly generous and supportive. We now have a brand new, very sturdy, very dug-in bench at White Bridge to replace the one crushed by the willow earlier in the year, see the triumphant work-party photo. It's been funded by a generous local user. In fact, we had two kind offers for replacement benches in quick succession after the fall of the willow, and the Green is also supported by many monthly standing order donations as well as one-off gifts. It's very clear how much the Green is loved and appreciated. At this time of year, workparties can occasionally get called off because of weather, but there's still work to be done so weather permitting, we'll be meeting down on the Green every

Wednesday morning at 9:30am at the containers (industrial estate entrance, near the rail and river bridges at Three Ways). The website: www.millenniumgreen. halesworth.net carries news of past and future events, photos, wildlife records, history and geology. Thank you to the following volunteers who helped at the fair: Jackie, Michael, Jill, Mick & Audrey, Collin, Bill, Tim, Nina, Eileen, Molly, Shirley, Laura, Di, Maggie, Felicity, Irene, Diane, Julie, Michelle, Pat & Penny. As well as committee members: Dot, Dot, Helen, Helen, Sue, Debbie, Maxine, Phyllis, Margaret, Jean, Arlette and Nikki. We have an excellent happy and dedicated team of committee members but we're looking for two new members to join us. It isn't a very demanding committee, we have five events

a year (two jumble sales, two fairs and The Big Breakfast) all on a Saturday in Holton Village Hall. We also have a two day street collection in June which involves a one-hour commitment on either a Friday in Halesworth or a Saturday at the Coop. We have an AGM meeting in February, our only other meetings are brief ones before our big events just to organise the day. If you think this is something you'd like to be involved with, please contact me. (Details at end of article). To everyone reading this, please don't lose sight of the reason for our fundraising. The money we raise funds the incredible work carried out by the scientists, doctors and staff at Cancer Research UK. Their expertise and knowledge genuinely improves treatments and outcomes for people diagnosed with cancer improving their survival rates and quality of life. We can all be touched by cancer and we send our love to one of our committee members and hope to see her back with us in 2022. On Saturday November 20th, we held our very popular Christmas Fair in Holton Village Hall. The committee would like to say thank you to everyone who came along and supported us. With your generosity, we raised a brilliant £2019.83. We'd like to thank the following businesses who kindly donated raffle prizes: • Morrison's store, Beccles • Mr & Mrs Stephenson, Woodside Farm • Darren Nunn Painter & Decorator • Susan Fitch, No Bad Feet And also to all the committee members, volunteers and friends who supplied a fantastic range of prizes which made the raffle such a huge success. Thank you to Maggie and Ian for donating two tickets for the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. Amazingly generous. Again, we have to give our grateful thanks for their continuing support to Market Fields Farm Shop, Holton Road for putting together a lovely Christmas hamper which was raffled off separately and made £119. The lucky winner was Helen Knevett. Most of the food we served for lunch was also kindly donated. The Coop, Halesworth has been a staunch supporter of all

well worth listening to. There are numerous articles so take the opportunity during these dark nights to switch the telly off and visit the site! Our Christmas service is on Sunday 19th December at 10am at School Farm, Cratfield. There'll be light refreshments afterwards, and everyone is welcome. There'll be no service on 26th December, but we'll meet again on Sunday 2nd January. This will be an opportunity to look forward to the coming year and to entrust ourselves to Him. We pray that this will be a very special Christmas for you all and for every blessing in the New Year.

By the time you read this, there will be a new podcast on the website. John is interviewed by Shealyn (a South African video producer) on the subject of 'How to help others - and ourselves.' It includes the basic principles of how to understand ourselves and how to change things for the better. Very relevant in this season that many people find stressful! There are more podcasts on the website covering subjects that range from understanding anxiety, depression, ME/CFS and one that asks the question: 'What is Church?' In other words, what is church meant to be like? You'll also find the talks that are recorded each week. These are down-to-earth, practical and

"Wow", thought the older brother, "This is punishment?" It was the older brother who wrote down that experience and he goes on to say how that book became a treasured family possession, how it was tangible proof that their parents loved them, how it taught the lesson that what really matters is people, not objects; patience, not judgment; love, not anger. It's easy to have a distorted view of God. Often that view is shaped by life's experiences, whether in our early years or as adults. It can be a view that produces fear, as in the story of the two boys - sometimes to the extent that people find it easier not to believe in God, let alone a God who loves them and is interested in their daily lives. If we understand Christmas aright, those misperceptions are blown away. Yes, we have done wrong, but what was God's response? To send his precious son into this world to show his heart of love towards us. That's why we celebrate Christmas. Just as that book became tangible proof to those children that their father loved them, may we see and feel and understand that what we celebrate at Christmas is tangible proof that God is a father who deeply loves us and wants to walk with us on our journey of life.

THE MORTON PARTNERSHIP

.

There is the old but true story of a clever, academic man who'd been given the gift of a very valuable book. One day, his two sons were in the living room and in walked dad. As he did so, the older boy saw his two-year-old sibling, John, cower slightly as his father entered. It was clear John had done something wrong. It did not take long for the awful truth to come to light. The boy had opened his father's treasured brand-new book and scribbled all over the first page with a pen. Staring at their father fearfully, both brothers waited for John's punishment. Their father picked up his prized book, looked at it carefully and then sat down without saying a word. Books were precious to him; he had several academic degrees. In those days, books were knowledge. What he did next was remarkable. Instead of punishing his brother by scolding or yelling, his father took the pen from the little boy's hand and then wrote in the book himself, alongside the scribbles that John had made. Here is what that father wrote: "John's work, 1959, age 2". How many times have I looked into your beautiful face and into your warm, alert eyes looking up at me and thanked God for the one who has now scribbled in my new book. You have made the book sacred, as have your brother and sister to so much of my life.

Halesworth Town Council

Results of climate change exhibition envisage the long term future for local areas. • Change priorities from growth to sustainability. • Acknowledge the reality of climate change. • Form a strong cross party coalition for action and legislation. We (What must we (Halesworth) do?) • Create more and varied opportunities to recycle throughout the town... 22%. • Ban single use plastic in all our shops, offices and the market... 17.7%. • Establish a local forum to discuss climate change and run workshops to educate residents to cope with changing green legislation... 15.5%. • Develop and provide more comprehensive public transport services... 13.3%. • Buy locally, and use local products... 11.11%. • Refuse to buy plastic wrapped vegetables... 8.8%. • Provide local electric charging points... 6.6%. • Do not allow new properties to have gas boilers... 6.6%. • Grow much more of our own produce in our gardens... 6.6%. • Town planners must think ahead and not wait for rulings. • Ensure that unoccupied property above shops are used for housing where possible. • Establish a daily covered market for local producers to sell their wares. • Plant more trees. • Look after our green spaces. • Encourage a dry goods shop where people take their own containers to buy the goods. • Use watering cans not hoses. • Switch off television stand by at night. • Re-wild the river upstream to stop flooding issues. • Recycle anything not collected by East Suffolk Council.

• Set a CO2 target for the town. • Don't just tell us to change our habits... Tell us why, and what the results will be if we don't. • Establish a community orchard and let residents take over verges to grow things if they wish. They will take responsibility for them. • Help the community to feel involved in the future. • Re-instate the Halesworth to Norwich bus service. • Council decisions must reflect the climate change issues, particularly in planning. • No pesticides or chemicals allowed on public spaces. • Stop treating our lovely market town like a city. Do not build a 100-bedded old people's home on our only sports ground. • Give us more varied sports facilities for all ages. • Embed climate change/ sustainability into all Council policies. • Look into the possibility of a town-wide fuel supply source which we would all contribute to. • Make London Road a one-way system, thus creating a ring road round the town. • Pedestrianise the Thoroughfare completely. Don't mess about with on and off times. Fine anyone who ignores the rules. • Find out why people leave Halesworth in their cars... Can we provide what they are looking for? • Do everything suggested in this exhibition. • Examine the voting records of our MP and County Councillors on climate change issues. • Make developers use ecofriendly materials. • Make farmers give up chemical interventions. • Avoid paving over front gardens. • Avoid plastic grass at all costs, as it cannot be got rid off safely. • Make our gardens good places for pollinators. • Start a community movement

to control Halesworth's future environment. What can I do? • Recycle much more... 22.22%. • Shop locally and buy local produce... 22.22%. • Drive less... 17.7%. • Cut down on plastic waste... 17%. • Walk much more... 15.5%. • Cycle more... 15.5%. • Plan my shopping better and try to buy seasonal goods only... 15%. • Grow more of my own food in the garden... 12%. • Eat less or possibly no red meat... 10%. • Buy better quality clothes that last longer... 8%. • Shower instead of bathing. • Change to eco-friendly cosmetics. • Consume less. • Travel less. • Create a wild area in the garden. • Be aware of how far food purchases have travelled. • I do all I can. • Look at ground/air source heating systems.

• Would use public transport if we had any. • Monitor my energy use.. • Buy an electric car when they are affordable.. • Do not do any long haul travel. • Do not fly anywhere. • I run workshops to help people cope with climate change anxieties. • Do need to change some of the things I do but need guidance and information to see what needs to be done. • I have reduced my petrol consumption by half. • I'd like to be informed of any future sustainability meetings as I'd help. • It's my duty to recycle. I do recycle but where does it go? I don't believe we get rid of it in a sustainable way. • Be aware of water resources. • Explore a more veg-based diet. • Walk and cycle much more than I do at the moment. • Buy fewer clothes. • Change my gas boiler when there's some help to do so.

December in the garden with Signature Landscaping don't cover, you can also mulch around established fruit trees. Clear debris. This is vital to prevent slugs and snails from setting up home in those lovely warm and damp conditions! However, a plea for wildlife... An artless pile of sticks and logs will make a wonderful 'des res' for hibernating hedgehogs and the like, so please don't be too ferocious on the tidying front. As autumn has been a little late this year fallen leaves may still be a problem, rake them up, it keeps the grass and the paths clear. Christmas is just around the corner and we all hope for a much calmer, less eventful and healthy 2022. Hopefully, all of our Christmas and new year plans will go ahead this year and we all have a wonderful time. December brings the true beginning of winter and we all know this can bring some troublesome weather for gardeners. At the moment we seem to be having quite a wet spell and this may mean staying off the garden for a day or two, if this is the case the leaves on paths driveways always need clearing. If not this then there is always small jobs that can be done. Prune climbing roses now by cutting away diseased or damaged growth and tying in any new shoots to their support.

Let me now answer some of the questions that patients are posing about the GP service and try to explain why we are where we are. in Primary Care. Having said all that, I want to end with some positive news. The Saxmundham Health One Stop Shop that was thwarted by the NHS fifteen years ago is back on! As you might have noticed, the site by the Sports Club has been cleared and our Project Initiation document has been submitted. We've also managed to attract two new GPs to work at Saxmundham Health. Dr. Clare Craik used to be a GP at Halesworth and Dr. Darren West has been working in Ipswich ever since training as a GP. They start in February, 2022 well before all the new housing comes but better to 'be prepared'. Finally, we're getting a new phone system! The PPG have fed back all the problems with the current call queueing system and getting cut off when you get to the top so (despite threats of Contractual penalty), we'll have a new cloud-based system early next year. If you're in a queue, then the new system will provide the automatic option of a call back from the Care Navigator so you don't have to hang on and you will not lose your place in the queue. Thank you for being understanding patients over this difficult phase but we can now see light at the end of the tunnel. Rest assured, we're continually striving to improve the care we give you. triage system pre-Covid, in which the GP phones you back and you decide together how best to manage the problem. The days of one Receptionist answering the phone and making appointments are long gone. We now have four Care Navigators in a call centre! Their role is to discuss the issue with you and to point you in the direction of an appropriate clinician for your problem. We have Mental Health Nurses, Physiotherapists, Pharmacists and Advanced Nurse Practitioners working with us who are often more appropriate than the GP. The fact is, that the demand has mushroomed because we receive five-hundred calls a day and six-hundred usually on Mondays. So, we need more GPs! The GP job has become less attractive and Junior Doctors prefer to work in the hospital. You can imagine that all the negative press has cemented their decisions. Older GPs are cracking under the pressure of intense twelve-hour days and quitting - Making it even harder for those who remain. One sobering statistic is that we were promised 6,000 new GPs nationally and we actually have 1,800 less. Over my career, the number of Orthopaedic Surgeons at Ipswich Hospital has increased from four to twenty eight! Great for patients, but more than ninety percent of patient contacts occur 175201

"A trouble shared is a trouble halved" goes the saying... So I thought I'd share our experience and insights with you, our patients, to hopefully reassure you that we have your best interests at heart. Covid has been a really challenging time for everyone through all its phases. Initially, we were thrown into panic as the pandemic emerged and so many people were dying. We anticipated an Armageddon situation in which there'd be no Specialist advice should always be hospital beds and no ambulances, sought prior to taking any action on meaning we might be providing matters discussed in this article. home care for hundreds of terminally ill patients. Some enduring good came in that we were motivated to develop a new system of identifying early illness that was published in the British Journal of General Practice HMRC are known to challenge the commerciality of such claims. If the registration has no direct link, a taxable benefit could even arise. (Compare a fleet of vans with similar registrations to an expensive one on the director's car). Now you know the tax implications, you know what to ask S4NTA for xmas. For further information, please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) on: robin.beadle@ensors.co.uk.

registration on your vehicle. Here, legislation specifically states that the right to use a particular registration is NOT a chattel. If you have a personalised registration for personal use, this is subject to CGT on any profit when sold (potentially covered by the annual CGT exemption). If you die owning the registration, the value is assessable to inheritance tax (IHT). This would also apply if you had a disused vehicle, say, in a shed. The car itself would be exempt from CGT (but not IHT) but the transferable registration sold with the car would be assessable to CGT/IHT. If you purchased the registration with a view to realising a profit in the future, HMRC would consider this a trading transaction - even if you only did it once (but you may be able to use the £1,000 trading allowance against any profit). For businesses, any personalised registrations are assets. You may be able to reclaim VAT if you can demonstrate a link between the registration and business (as advertising) but

Personalised car registrations Personalised number plates continue to be sought after with some achieving stratospheric values. The most valuable registration sold in the UK was in excess of £518,000 and worldwide, the record is over £7.25m (Dubai). Consequently, HMRC have not been slow to seek tax. Looking at HMRC's manuals, you will see that "a car numberplate is a chattel". A chattel is broadly a personal asset that attracts a low-level capital gains tax (CGT) exemption for proceeds of up to £6,000 (per item or per set) and a reducing exemption above that figure. Therefore, you might believe that a personalised registration (of under £6,000 value) would be exempt from tax. Unfortunately, it's not. The chattel legislation refers to the number plate itself and given that most are plastic and cost under £50, HMRC are happy to exempt these. Instead, when we talk about a personalised number plate, we're actually discussing the right to carry the personalised

Sizewell Karate Club has been in existence since 1988 and is the longest running karate club in the area. It focuses on providing high-quality, traditional Shotokan karate. The club has had significant success in the past in sports karate competitions culminating with many local and national champions. The club and the instructors have won many awards including 'Coach of the Year' and 'Health and Wellbeing awards'. Our club is made up of children, adults and families training together. The club has recently reopened again after being forced to shut down because of the pandemic restrictions. Sizewell Karate Club received a restart grant from East Suffolk Council. The club has bought additional cleaning/PPE/equipment, etc to ensure that everyone is Covidsafe when training at the club. The club has also updated their risk assessments, including Covid protocols. The stage took on a most enchanting appearance whilst we were guided through each of Lees designs. Our President Elsie gave the vote of thanks saying that Lee had cheered us all up after the last two years by showing us inspired ways to create different Christmas ideas. A truly enchanted evening in readiness for the seasonal period. Members then enjoyed non-alcoholic punch and mince pies before the raffle. June wished all a happy Christmas and safe journey home and reminded us that the January 27th meeting will be Terri Potter 'This way and that'. Our February 24th meeting is our

June welcomed members and guests from four other clubs and gave out the notices. Jan and Jenny were thanked for the beautiful flowers in the foyer. We were then introduced to our demonstrator for the evening. A man who's visited us many times and hardly needed an introduction, Lee Berrill. His theme was 'Made for Christmas' and Lee provided us with six arrangements, most with additional twin arrangements and accessories created by himself. The foliage and flowers used were breathtaking in every way and the containers were awe inspiring. A CD rack found near a skip became a wonderful display featuring Christmas baubles and a stunning floral arrangement adorned the top. A box covered with seasonal fabric became a gorgeous arrangement incorporating improvised tubing decorated with braid and wool

performers, many of which have previously appeared on the Film Theatre stage and whose previous sell-out successes have included shows at Leiston Film Theatre and at the Spa Pavilion Theatre in Felixstowe. The group promise another fun-filled family pantomime, packed to the panto brim with toe-tapping tunes, a huge helping of audience participation, and plenty of fee-fi-fo-fun, as they tell the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, which unfolds in the Pantoland village of Fiddle-onthe-Fen and tells the tale of Jack, who is tricked into exchanging the family cow for a bag of beans, that turn out to be magic seeds that grow overnight into a giant beanstalk. The Trot family climb to the top of the beanstalk to rescue Daisy the Cow, only to discover a Giant's kingdom and the answer to all their money

worries. But will they make it back in one piece? Or will the Giant Blunderbore grind their bones to make his bread? Film Theatre Manager and Pantomime Director, Wayne Burns, is looking forward to returning to the stage: "After such a difficult time for our beloved Film Theatre, we're so pleased to see Pantomime back to Leiston and the entire cast can't wait to bring our brilliant script to life on stage and perform for such appreciative crowds. Our audiences are in for a real treat" he said. The Pantomime sees renowned Suffolk musician Tom Horton returning as the Musical Director and the energetic students from the Chloe Kinrade School of Dance will be making a welcome return to the stage, as part of the Pantomime extravaganza. Another strange year draws to a close. Some of us have lost more to Covid than others. Whilst restrictions are less severe, current guidance leaves local provision variable. But happily, the activities across the Blyth Valley Parishes are up and running this Christmas. You're all very welcome to all or any that appeal in Halesworth or around the group! We're blessed with good volunteers, some looking after the churches and some able to take services. May I take this opportunity to introduce myself? I'm the new Team Rector for the Valley, fresh from four parishes in Dorset. With many thanks to Jane Held and colleagues who have grown our work through the vacancy: developing the Community Larder, connections with the Pear Tree Trust and supporting our local schools. On November 20th, there was no normal coffee morning but our annual Christmas Fayre took place in the Orange Hall behind the church. There were lots of goodies and gifts to buy plus of course our wonderful light lunches in the Green Room. Thanks to all those who came and supported us. All funds raised are going to our 'Going Green' project. We may already be the proud recipients of the Eco Church Gold Award, but we intend to continue the good work in years to come.

The grand total of money raised on the 20th was £1,813.98.Well done everyone! Gift Service Our Gift Service this year will be at 10:45am on Sunday December 19th when we'll be inviting donations for East Anglia Children's Hospices (EACH). Please bring your gifts in a separate envelope marked 'EACH'. Rosedale Rosedale Funeral Directors are planning to hold their Annual Memorial Service at Emmanuel on Sunday December 12th at 2pm. All those from the town who wish to remember their loved ones are welcome to attend. Best wishes to all our friends for a happy Christmas and a healthy new year. May God bless you and keep you safe and in the coming months.
