The Neighbourhood Plan weekend event at St Mary Church on the 6th and 7th of November was well attended by residents but the group would still like to receive your feedback on the draft plan, whether you managed to visit the event or not. The feedback forms are available at the Library, the Council offices and online on our website: www. halesworthtowncouncil.org.uk/ halesworth-draft-neighbourhoodplan-public-consultation. The closing date is the 17th December. The Council and the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group would like to thank all those who attended the event and who have already submitted their feedback. Richard Davies, Head Golf Professional with the team

News from Halesworth Town Juniors Football Club HTJFC would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank all of our sponsors. Halesworth Golf Club for sponsoring kits for the U10s, U7s Lions, and the new goals for U11s. Broadway Colours for sponsoring the kit for our U9s. Hettys Little Copy Shop for sponsoring the kit for our U7s Tigers. DB Renovations for sponsoring U11s kit and G Engineering Ltd for sponsoring the training tops for all teams. Without your support and donations, we'd not be able to provide the juniors with new kits, goals, equipment and the pitches to play on. We've also received some funding for portable floodlights and would like to say thank you to SJ Geomatics for their contribution towards the clubs cost for this. Thank you to Ancient House Bistro for hosting their charity quiz night on behalf of the Juniors. The committee, managers, coaches and players themselves are all immensely grateful for all of your support. With all of this support, HTJFC were able to proudly begin the new football season on Sunday 19th September with six teams of aspiring youngsters aged from six to eleven. The youngest of the Juniors have started their footballing journeys as two U7s teams and play, along with u9s and under 10s at Westhall community playing field. We're truly grateful to the community of Westhall for welcoming us for another season and the fantastic facilities that they provide to us as a club. Allowing the club to use this green space is essential for the survival of the club. The oldest of the Juniors, U11s, have two teams and are now happily playing back at the Dairy Hill site. They've settled back in well and have embraced the new bigger pitch, bigger goals and the offside rule! These are all changes that they have

to abide by and adjust to now that they have progressed to U11. On September 28th, HTJFC representatives were invited to attend the FA awards ceremony at Ipswich Town Football Club to collect the 'Grassroots Club of the Year' award. This was awarded to HTJFC for the hard work and efforts throughout the 19-20 season. This is an amazing achievement and shows that the junior club, has gone from strength to strength, due to the hard work, commitment and dedication of the Managers, Coaches, Committtee, parents and the players themselves. We're holding a quiz night on Friday 3rd December at 7:30pm at Westhall Village Hall to raise funds for the club. Teams of four, £5 per head, includes a buffet, bring your own drink. Donations of raffle prizes would be gratefully received. Please contact Lucy on 07837 942630 if you'd like to have a team or to donate a prize. We look forward to a full season ahead and strive to keep Halesworth Town Juniors a club to be proud of. If anyone wishes to contact the club, please email the Junior Club Secretary Kathryn Bullen at: halesworthtownjuniors@ hotmail.co.uk.

As we approach the end of another extraordinary year, we'd like to thank all those who continued to support the Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats Protection branch during another difficult time. We send our very best wishes to everyone for Christmas and a very good new year to come! Eight precious weeks, Covid and subsequent lockdowns has further increased demand for new pets and changed the way that owners find them. CPs report (Cats UK 2021) found that just over half of all cats purchased (52%) were found online, including sites like Facebook and Gumtree. Because of unregulated online selling, a worrying cat welfare issue is now on the rise. Kittens are being mis-

sold by unscrupulous sellers, who separate them from their mothers before the eight precious weeks mark, meaning they're missing out on vital nutrients and social development time. This winter, CP wants to raise awareness of the 'eight precious weeks' of a kittens life. Kitten mis-selling for easy profit is on the increase, often resulting in kittens being taken from their mother when they are too young to thrive without her. Buying over the internet makes it far harder to spot a deceitful seller often with devastating consequences. • A kitten sold too young is far more likely to suffer a lifethreatening illness than if they've built up immunity through their

and the energetic students from the Chloe Kinrade School of Dance will be making a welcome return to the stage, as part of the Pantomime extravaganza. tunes, a huge helping of audience participation, and plenty of feefi-fo-fun, as they tell the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, which unfolds in the Pantoland village of Fiddle-on-the-Fen and tells the tale of Jack, who is tricked into exchanging the family cow for a bag of beans, that turn out to be magic seeds that grow overnight into a giant beanstalk. The Trot family climb to the top of the beanstalk to rescue Daisy the Cow, only to discover a Giant's kingdom and the answer to all their money worries. But will they make it back in one piece? Or will the Giant Blunderbore grind their bones to make his bread? Film Theatre Manager and Pantomime Director, Wayne Burns, is looking forward to returning to the stage: "After such a difficult time for our beloved Film Theatre, we're so pleased to see Pantomime back to Leiston and the entire cast can't wait to bring our brilliant script to life on stage and perform for such appreciative crowds. Our audiences are in for a real treat" he said. The Pantomime sees renowned Suffolk musician Tom Horton returning as the Musical Director

Following the resounding success of Goldilocks and the Three Bears in 2020, Pantomime returns to the stage of the splendid Leiston Film Theatre in January, after sadly having to be postponed in 2021, due to lockdown. Jack and the Beanstalk appears live on stage at the 107-year-old venue on Thursday 13th, Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th January, with demand for tickets so high, that seats for some performances are already limited, with over 1,000 tickets already sold. The Pantomime has been written by Wayne Burns and Stephen Ginger, who between them have over thirty years of Pantomime behind them. The show is being brought to the stage under Wayne's 'Team B Productions' title. A group of experienced am-dram performers, many of which have previously appeared on the Film Theatre stage and whose previous sellout successes have included shows at Leiston Film Theatre and at the Spa Pavilion Theatre in Felixstowe. The group promise another funfilled family pantomime, packed to the panto brim with toe-tapping

Bramfield House School has won the 'Specialist Provision' category at Nasen's fifth annual awards. The school was put in the spotlight at a glittering ceremony at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel in London for its outstanding work helping children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) reach their full potential. The awards are hosted by Nasen (National Association for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and supported by official media partner, Schools Week. Nasen is the leading membership charity that exists to champion, connect and support those working with, and for, children and young people with SEND and learning differences. Scooping the 'Specialist Provision of the Year' award, Bramfield House was recognised for supporting exceptional learning and outcomes for young people with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), part of its remit as a specialist

HALESWORTH December 2021.indd 7

SEMH school supporting boys from disadvantaged backgrounds from a wide area of Norfolk and Suffolk. Over the past two years, staff at Bramfield have strived to develop a completely new, holistic curriculum, leading to the best GCSE results in the school's history, with outcomes higher than those in mainstream settings. Bramfield House School is part of Acorn Education and Care, which is part of Outcomes First Group, the UK's leading provider of outcomes-led learning, life skills, and therapeutic care for children, young people and adults with complex needs, social, emotional and mental health needs and autism. Bramfield House School joins twelve other award-winners who were judged by a panel of leading professionals, who have a wealth of experience in education and SEND, as well as individuals

with lived experience. Davina Bell (Headteacher at Bramfield House) said: "The team at Bramfield are elated at winning this amazing award. This marks the end of a fab year at the school where results are among the best in the country. We have proven yet again that SEN is not a disadvantage, and that, with the right support and care, all young people can rise up and succeed without limits." Annamarie Hassall MBE (Chief Executive of Nasen) said: "The team at Bramfield House School should be extremely proud of what they've achieved. I'm thrilled to be able to spotlight the team's hard work and inclusive best practice that's making a big difference to learners with SEND, in particular for young people with social, emotional and mental health needs. They are also inspiring their local community, other schools and specialist provision in the sector through their holistic curriculum and provision. As CEO at my first Nasen awards, I was humbled by the calibre of nominations and the incredible work schools, individuals and organisations are doing to achieve such fantastic outcomes for children and young people with SEND and learning differences. This past eighteen-months have been particularly challenging for us all, and have greatly impacted the educational experience of all children and young people. At Nasen, our vision is to achieve an educational experience for learners with SEND that's consistently as good as it is

for learners without SEND. I'd like to congratulate all our Nasen award winners for their dedication to this." Bramfield House School works closely with its community, local schools and surrounding special schools, to help students feel a strong sense of community and responsibility. The school has worked hard to build up a sense of responsibility to the environment from students, and is aiming to become an eco school, with pupils taught about their impact on the environment, and learning about the world around them. Additionally, a new autistic spectrum provision for boys who struggle with the demands of the sensory environment means that Bramfield students can now move from one area to the other without disruption to their education, and can learn with therapeutic practitioners within their own environment. Adrian Gallagher (Head of IDL), sponsor of the 'Specialist Provision of the Year' award, said: "Huge congratulations to Bramfield House School and to all the winners and nominees. We're honoured to sponsor the 'Specialist Provision of the Year' award. Our goal at IDL is to provide learning support to those most in need. Just like Bramfield House School, we're committed to ensuring learners realise their full potential and achieve their lifelong aspirations. What the team at Bramfield has achieved is amazing, and has clearly made a huge difference to the lives of the pupils they support, both past and present! Well done!"

It's important to provide clean, fresh water for wildlife to drink over the winter months

The gift from the garden Your garden gives up some beautiful gifts of its own at this time of year, allowing you to bring the outside into the home with foliage and 'green' decorations. By using your garden as a resource, you can create some simple, yet beautiful decorative displays for the Christmas festivities. A great use for your winter prunings is to arrange bare or lichen-covered twigs in a tall glass vase and festoon with tea light holders or use lengths of trailing ivy and evergreen foliage twisted into swags for looping along mantelpieces or winding round banisters. Sprigs of aromatic leaves and herbs: bay, rosemary, sage, thyme and anything else you can lay your hands on, arranged around a large candle on a deep fluted dish to make a fragrant table centre piece. If you can't source your Christmas greenery from your own garden, then take a trip down to your local garden centre where you'll find just about everything you need. Small living Christmas trees can be bought in pots for children, so that each year they can be brought inside for the festivities and be part of your Christmas tradition. Alternatively, you can create your own permanent Christmas decoration in the garden. Buy a larger living Christmas tree and plant it in a good position allowing for future growth. You'll need to plant it no later than the beginning of January. In the depths of winter, the quiet charms of plants with strikingly

the Royal Horticultural Society has some tips: • Carry on harvesting winter crops such as parsnips, kale, leeks, sprouts (don't forget to pick sprouts from the bottom of the stalk upwards). • Collect all empty plant pots and seed trays together and wash them ready for next year together with garden tools. • Collect the rest of the leaves that have fallen from the trees for composting as leaf mould. • Do some early wrapping by covering any large outside containers with bubblewrap, fleece or hessian to help prevent the pots cracking in the cold frosty weather. • Don't be too much of a tidy gardener. Leave some seed heads and berries on plants for animals and birds to eat. • Provide clean water for wildlife to drink.

coloured bark come into their own. Textures and stem colours of trees and shrubs attract the eye and brighten the winter gloom. By planting (for example) dogwoods, snake bark maples, willows and white washed brambles, you can create a stunning winter effect in any garden or landscape. Most winter stems are best planted in groups to maximise their impact and in locations where they can be seen and appreciated. They perform well in full sun and in deep, moist, loamy soil so try to avoid shallow and chalky soils. Dogwood and willow shrubs will need pruning each year in March, almost to ground level, to ensure that a fresh crop of the brightest coloured stems are produced in the next winter. December is definitely a time to catch up on some indoor gardening jobs and have a rest, but for those that are out and about,

Our November meeting saw us welcome Annette Dunning from the Rural Coffee Caravan who came to talk to members about warm homes and the UK power cut priority helpline. Our December meeting will see us out and enjoying a Christmas lunch together.

As from January next year, please note, we'll be meeting on the second Thursday of the month at 10:30 am at The Pear Tree Centre as usual. Our first meeting of the new year will be on Thursday 13th January, when Helen Hayes will be joining us. We've had lots of good ideas

from members for speakers and trips out next year so if you have Parkinson's, or care for someone who does, please come along and join us. We're there to support you. We wish everyone a very happy Christmas and peaceful New Year! Gail: 01986 872283 Margaret: 01502 478502

This year has been one of the busiest for the housing market in more than a decade. All our seven offices have seen a huge demand at all levels of the market. What we really need is more stock and more houses to sell. Estimates show that there will be 1.5 million sales this year across the country, with the total value of homes changing hands at £473bn, some £95bn higher than in 2020. The trends driving the market seem to be - a 'reassessment of home' prompted by the pandemic, a 'search for space', low mortgage rates, better access to mortgages for first-time buyers, and, of course, the stamp duty holiday. The closing of the final stamp duty holiday deadline on September 30th in England means there are no more purchase tax savings on offer. What the resulting impact on demand gives us is the first indication of what will happen in the market next year. Obviously, no one has a crystal ball, however, over the past two months there seems to have been little impact on demand. Buyer demand is not at the unsustainable highs seen back in March and April, but it remains steadily above the fiveyear average, some 28% higher, suggesting those pandemic drivers of activity in the market

Halesworth Lions Club Due to the pandemic, the Lions have been fairly quiet for the last few months, but are hoping to bring Father Christmas to you again this year. Sadly, due to insurance and safety rules, and advice from the Lions HQ legal team, we'll not be able to drive Father Christmas around, so he'll appear at static locations around the town so that people come out and see him. His appearances will depend on the weather and availability of his helpers. But all

being well, he'll be at the following places: 1st Dec - The Avenue 3rd Dec - Oak Green 8th Dec - Orchard Valley 15th Dec - Queens Drive 18th Dec - The Thoroughfare We also hope to bring him to the Co-op on a Saturday, to be decided. We're very sorry it has to be like this, but are acting on best advice. For further information and updates, please refer to the Halesworth Lions Facebook page.

Sizewell C £250m boost to Suffolk from the start of construction • Up to £100m for the environment made up of £78m for an environmental body and £22m for habitat creation and mitigation. • £23m community fund administered by Suffolk Community Foundation. • Up to £22m for employment and skills. • Multimillion investment in improvements to Suffolk's infrastructure. The public examination of the Sizewell C project has now closed. Both Suffolk County Council and East Suffolk Council have stated their position on the proposals and while there are still some issues to work on, agreement has been reached with the councils, emergency services and other recipients including the RSPB and National Trust on the associated funds the project will deliver locally. The funding programme, known as the Deed of Obligation, has been agreed as part of the planning process to mitigate impacts and compensate for the construction and in some cases into the operational phases whilst ensuring legacy benefits for local communities for decades to come.

As part of building Suffolk's new power station a package of over £250m has now been allocated to key areas covering: Employment and skills - £22m Up to £22m has been allocated to a far-reaching programme of work with Further Education colleges and training organisations, including bursaries for those struggling to access education and new centres of excellence to deliver the skills needed to work on Sizewell. Environment - £100m The local natural environment will also benefit from up to £22m through investment in projects that will mitigate the landscape impacts, whilst at the same time further increasing biodiversity on Suffolk's heritage coast and the creation of habitat where wildlife can thrive. Sizewell C ecologists have already successfully created Aldhurst farm in Leiston along with other habitat creation in surrounding areas, which are now home to a range of wildlife enjoying lagoons and reed beds, lowland heath, heather, acid grassland and wet grassland which are characteristic of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths. Separately, A further £78m

has also been agreed for an independent Environmental Body to enhance the area's rich landscape. Community Fund - £23m A special fund for community projects of £23m will be administered by Suffolk Community Foundation, the Suffolk local authorities, community representatives and Sizewell C to ensure that local villages and groups can access funds which will limit the impacts of construction but also enhance the environmental, social and economic wellbeing of East Suffolk Taken together with the legacy of infrastructure improvements that the project will deliver, the overall investment aimed at limiting impacts and benefitting the local community will exceed that committed to in the Deed of Obligation. Alongside this, the Sizewell C Consortium, the group representing the 200 leading organisations bringing forward the construction of new nuclear power stations, has estimated the direct benefit of the building programme to the Suffolk economy will be £2bn and £4.5bn

to the wider East of England region. Humphrey Cadoux Hudson, Sizewell C Managing Director, said: "I am excited by the opportunities Sizewell C presents and I am determined that the local communities will benefit as much as possible from the opportunities presented by the project. Impacts of the construction phase will be minimised, and we will continue to work with local councils to deliver this. Sizewell C offers opportunities for all, the range of skills we need are diverse and we want a workforce that reflects society. With this funding package in place, we can ensure the project will help level up the county so that those most in need can access training to develop skills for rewarding local jobs and provide an incentive for people to live and work locally." The Planning Inspectorate now has 3 months to make a recommendation to the Secretary of State with a final planning decision expected to be published in April 2022. British Open Taekwon-do Championships 2020 (2021) Newly formed ICENI Taekwon-do took a small group to Coventry for the GTUK British Open Championships, and came back with five medals! • Jason Drake 2nd Dan Black Belt won a Silver for Sparring • Michael Wickwar Green Tag, won Gold for Patterns and Gold for Sparring • Danny Abramson Green Tag, won Silver for Patterns and Silver for Sparring • Amanda Dykes was in full support, along with ICENI instructors and officials Mr and Mrs Bedingfield. But there's more to this story than just the medals... This was the first tournament since the pandemic, and both Danny and Michael joined the club while training was restricted to sociallydistanced techniques with no

contact. This was then followed by a lengthy spell of training at home via Zoom sessions with their instructors, sometimes with very poor internet connections, and very small training spaces in their homes. Only in August did they actually get to hit a bag and were allowed close contact sparring tuition. So their achievements (like so many at this tournament) was a victory for all those who have persevered to learn Taekwon-do through the pandemic, supported by hard working instructors who wouldn't give up their dedication to teaching Taekwon-do. If anyone out there wishes to join us at ICENI Taekwon-do, please go to our booking page for more information on how to book a free session: www.iceniTKD.uk

On the 16th of October, we held our Jumble Sale in Holton Village Hall. We had an excellent day and we thank everyone who came out to support us and all our volunteers who work so hard for us. Thank you to everyone who baked, the cakes were delicious. We raised a staggering £836.17p which is incredible! We know

that the money we raise will help to save people's lives as new and better treatments are developed. The committee would like to say a huge thank you to EPS Transfers for designing our lovely new banners (look out for our Christmas Fair one in Halesworth). We're very grateful to EPS for supporting us. We'd also like to say a huge thank you to Holton Village Hall.

They always go that extra mile and we're very grateful for all they do. Without the Hall, we wouldn't have a venue for our events, so please support them whenever you can. Our next event is our Christmas Fair in Holton Village Hall on November 20th, 10:30am-2pm. (Our adverts were in the November edition of the Community News). Don't forget to visit Carole at 84 Duke's Drive for all your book needs (weather Alison, Laura and Jenny permitting). For any information please contact Dawn Davis, Chair on 01986 873640.

Since our last report, we've been getting back into the routine of meeting again, and remembering some of our songs and games, with the girls picking their favourites for an evening. The Brownies got creative and used leaves, feathers and grasses to design an autumn place mat and have designed self-portraits for a Girlguiding Anglia 50th birthday card to send to another pack. We've been pleased to welcome Poppy, Cassie, Frankie and Emelia to Brownies. We hope you'll all enjoy your time with us. Our first meeting back following half term, we dressed up sparkly for a firework party and thought about celebrations. We all enjoyed the delicious spread that Penguin put on for us. On Friday 22nd October we had a special guiding farewell and thank you lunch in The Stables, at The Angel for Alison and Laura Nichols, who moved up to Chesterfield, last year during the first lockdown. Our District Commissioner (Jenny Allen) presented Alison and Laura (better known as Koala and Panda at Brownie) with gifts and thanked them for their commitment and dedication to Guiding over the years. It was extra special in that Alison was also presented with her fifty years' service award to Guiding! Alison was a Brownie and Guide herself, gaining her pre-warrant in 1969 with a Brownie pack in Mansfield. She

then went on to run Brownie packs in Lincoln, and Wangford after moving to Suffolk. Alison discovered there was demand in Halesworth for a second Brownie pack and in 1984, along with Sheila Dunce, started 2nd Halesworth Brownies. This is a fantastic achievement, Alison has dedicated over fifty years to Guiding and it's thanks to her that so many girls have been able to enjoy challenges, make new friends, to learn, to grow and to most importantly, have fun as a Brownie. It was also lovely to catch up with Guiding friends who we haven't seen for so long. We miss you both terribly but are pleased that you've settled in well to your new home and look forward to seeing you again when you are next down. We also miss Katie, who's settled in well at Lancaster University.

Halesworth WI report

Christmas is coming… event at the Pear Tree Centre on Saturday 4th December. If you knew Caryl and want to remember her, we'd love to see you for a special lunch. Just ring us on 875600 to let us know you can come. Bernard and Ken In an extraordinary coincidence, we attended the funerals of Bernard Montgomery and Kenneth Denson at Waveney Crematorium, one after the other on the 11th November. Ken and Bernard were fantastic

volunteers, they drove as much as they could and were respected and loved by their passengers. We send all our condolences to their families but remember them with so much love and pride. Wellbeing coffee and chat at Chinneys Many of you will remember the wellbeing get-togethers that were held at Chinney's before lockdown. Steve and Sarah from the wellbeing team did a great job, bringing loads of people

together for a chat, lunch and cup of coffee. HVC will be seeing if we can get 'Coffee and Chat' up and running once again and I'm pleased to say that Steve and Sarah will be there to make it go with a swing. Our first session is on Tuesday 6th December at 12 noon. If you want to know more, ring Karen on 01986 875600. It's community lunch time! Rev Jane is leaving us for pastures new. She's the chief

architect of Halesworth's Community Larder, our lasting legacy from this awful pandemic. To say farewell and thank you, we'll be organising a special community lunch on 15th December at the Community Larder, featuring soup, a roll and delicious cake. To book your place, ring HVC on 875600. Or just turn up at 12:30pm to enjoy delicious soup and natter with old friends. And do, please, give a Christmas Gift for Caryl

We visited Spexhall and Wissett WI for their talk on pantomime dames which proved highly entertaining, followed by lovely cakes and coffee. Our next meeting will be our AGM. Followed by a social get together. We meet on the third Thursday of the month at 2pm at the Rifle Hall. New members welcome.

How do we respond? In a recent TV programme, an elderly gentleman who had experienced loss in WWII was asked which was worse: The war or the pandemic? He paused for a moment and said the pandemic, because it'd touched everyone, everywhere. Sadly for some, these last twenty months have been times of loss and tragedy. For others, of rediscovering values and reconnecting with what matters in life. For some, fears and anxieties have surfaced, relationships have been stretched to their limits. We all respond differently to that which is out of our control. Perhaps, more than anything else, the pandemic has reminded us that we're not masters of our destinies, but we can decide how we respond to what comes our way. Consider a young Irishman named Joseph Scriven (18191886), son of a captain in the

We welcomed members and visitors at our last meeting held at the Rifle Hall when Norma Howell showed a film and talked on the work of medical detection dogs. All were fascinated by their skills and capabilities. Several members enjoyed the slides and talk given by Lady Tollemache, who's been a Chelsea Flower Show designer at High Lodge, Darsham.

British Royal Marines. He got his degree and enrolled in a military college to prepare for an army career, and promptly fell in love with a girl from his hometown. They got engaged and began dreaming about their future together. The eve of their wedding arrived at last, and Joseph's fiancé saddled a horse to go and see him. A little later, Joseph saw his bride-to-be riding towards him but suddenly, just as she was crossing the bridge, her horse bucked and threw her like a rag doll down into the river below. In blind panic, Joseph ran to the river, calling out her name. He plunged into the icy waters, but it was too late. His bride was already dead. Joseph was heartbroken, emigrated to Canada, and eventually fell in love again. In 1854, he was due to marry Eliza Roche, but she fell ill and grew

LOWROAD, ROAD BRAMFIELD LOW BRAMFIELD IP19 9JH

progressively worse. The wedding was repeatedly postponed until, three years later, Eliza died. How did Joseph respond? He turned to the only thing that had anchored him during his life, his relationship with God. He committed himself to work amongst the needy and became known as 'the man who saws wood for poor widows and sick people who are unable to pay.' Back home in Ireland, Joseph's mother was deeply concerned for her heartbroken son, and he, in turn, was concerned for her. One night, Joseph penned a poem to comfort her. Several years later, a friend found it in a drawer at Joseph's house. The poem was eventually put to music and went on to become one of the best-loved hymns of all time. What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often

forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry, everything to God in prayer. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged. Take it to the Lord in prayer! How do we respond if something comes 'out of the blue'? A broken relationship, loss of a job or home, or a serious illness? For Joseph Scriven, out of the pain of loss, of disrupted plans, came a deepened relationship with God, a life of service to others, and a hymn that's brought encouragement and comfort to countless millions around the world. As we approach another Christmas, may we ponder its message and find within it the strength to respond positively to whatever challenges we face. www.halesworthcommunity church.org John Sparkes

People have asked if we'll be doing a Community Christmas Lunch this year. The answer is YES! We're exploring whether we'll be able to have a lunch together or whether we'll have to deliver again like last year. We want to know what you think will be best. We have volunteers, we have turkey (thanks to a wonderful gift from Mills and Daughters) and help from East Suffolk County Council. Call us now on 875600 to let us know your thoughts or book your place. Remember, we're multi-talented, so we can sort a sit down meal or deliver to your door. A gift for Caryl There isn't a day when we don't remember our wonderful volunteer, Caryl Coomer. So, we're celebrating what would have been her 79th birthday. Caryl loved Christmas and gave us all lovely, quirky Christmas gifts. This year, we're asking people to give gifts to the Community Larder in Caryl's name. It was a cause she loved. In October, the Larder had 470 visitors including ninety children. We're definitely reaching young families that need a bit of help and support. So, we'd love people to donate Christmas gifts that can be shared with people who come to the Larder. All we ask is that if it's a gift for a child, you let us know what age the gift is for. But remember, people of all ages visit the Larder. Just drop your gift at the HVC Office and we'll pass them on. We'll be celebrating Caryl's volunteering and amazing contribution to HVC at a special

A CHRISTMAS TREE GROWERS LAMENT I am sure I shall never see, So vile a thing as a plastic tree. It has no charm, it has no grace, It is an utter waste of space. It has no character, I fear It is a carbon copy every year. So awful, I’m sure you’ve cussed it Until the day you gladly bust it. No environmental need it serves, depleting the earth of oil reserves. It never grows naturally on farms, No birds have rested in its arms. From its factory, pollution passes Real trees use up greenhouse gasses. And when at last it’s had its day, It is still a pain to throw away. You can’t recycle it, nor chip it, But can only bin and tip it. And yet on top of all this racket, It even costs a tidy packet.

So this advice, I give for free, GET YOURSELF A REAL TREE!

AGM annual report

It's good to be back!

It's good to be back and to meet face-to-face. Church has been meeting now for several weeks and as good as Zoom has been over the past eighteen months, there's no substitute for getting together, worshipping God, sharing encouragements and simply talking together. Nor is it a case of picking up where we left off. As a church, we're aware that walking with God is, by definition, a journey, and lockdown cannot lock down that journey. It's just passing through a different landscape, so as we resume our meetings, we know that we enter a new phase of learning and growing in our relationship with God and

each other. One of the good things to emerge from this time, is that some of those who joined us via Zoom have continued to do so. It's now possible to be part of the meetings and to interact with one another. So, for example, if someone's housebound or cannot get fellowship where they're living, they can still join in. We've been pleasantly surprised at how many have taken up this offer and how well it's worked. You're very welcome to join us, whether in person or via Zoom. Carers' Fund for the outstanding work both charities carried out, supporting the local community throughout the pandemic. We were also pleased to fund a request from Halesworth Community Sports and Leisure and Halesworth Angel Bowls Club for a new defibrillator, which has been positioned on the Dairy Hill sports complex and is accessible to all. In addition to this, we've provided four sets of ophthalmoscopes and otoscopes for use at Cutlers Hill Surgery. It's been good that the PSH continues to provide a regular venue for phlebotomy. The phlebotomy meet and greet is now fully run by East Coast Community Healthcare. Following the pandemic, the meet and greet role became too involved for volunteers, despite Lyn and Lesley continuing to volunteer throughout the lockdown earlier this year. A big thank you to all the wonderful volunteers provided by HVC who have so professionally enabled this essential service to continue in Halesworth from the PSH for the last four years. We continue to carefully assess any requests to put to our members for funding, as well as identifying other health-related projects to support. We were all shocked and saddened at the beginning of this year, to learn of the death of our long serving member June Laws. June was an active member and regularly attended meetings and events. She was always ready to help and always had a smile, regularly making everyone else smile too with her mischievous sense of humour. She is greatly

missed. Sadly, three of our long serving trustees are standing down. John Lewis, has been a trustee and has served as secretary for over ten years, taking over the reins from his mum, Marjorie when she passed away. John has dedicated hours of time and service to the League of Friends and we can always rely on John for his vast historical knowledge of the charity. Rosemary Smith-Howell and Judith Mesquita (otherwise known as our trolley dollies) have also resigned as trustees. Rosemary and Judith ran the trolley shop for the wards at the PSH and for service users at Rayner Green as well as volunteering as part of the meet and greet team. Rosemary has been a trustee for over ten years. We give thanks to you all for your hard work and commitment to the charity. Finally, thank you to our remaining trustees, for all their hard work and dedication throughout the last eighteen months. Our Vice Chair, Alan Witherby, our Treasurer Lyn Clark and Roger Smith-Howell. We're pleased to welcome Hayley Daglish as a Trustee, Hayley was elected as our Secretary at the AGM, having previously been our minutes secretary. Finally, thanks to Bill Pagan who was elected as our President. We appreciate and value Bill's vast experience and knowledge and contribution to the charity. As our project progresses, we hope to recruit suitable volunteers as trustees, who have time and knowledge and the desire to support and develop the charity through this exciting time of change.

Our first time back after the Covid lockdown was a huge success. We had a wonderful turnout for Rogers workshop as he showed us how to make a Christmas Swag using a wire coat hanger. It was a lovely evening and great fun. Jean came along to keep an eye on us and had a good catch up with Roger. Thank you to the ladies who kept us supplied with tea, coffee and biscuits. Everyone would like to say a huge thank you to Jackie for keeping the club going and taking on the day to day tasks. We send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Jean one of our long-standing members and hope to see her back with us soon.

day care for adults with various health conditions, including dementia, where they can mix with others, join in activities and receive personal care, while providing loved ones and family valuable respite from their caring roles. We were previously working as part of a steering group alongside East Suffolk Council (ESC), FoHCHC members and Halesworth Volunteer Centre (HVC) to develop a business plan to find the perfect provider for the service. ESC are fully supportive and will be looking to fund those who are eligible, alongside private service users. After having to put everything on hold, we'll be looking to re-engaging the steering group very soon. We also have plans to knock down the current extension at the back of the building, creating a new extension providing office space to let, which will ensure sustainability and cover the running costs of the building. We've identified a potential tenant, HVC. HVC trustees are fully supportive and committed to the project and we've been working closely with HVC in relation to the plans and will continue to do so as the project progresses. UPDATE: We're delighted to report that we've now received planning permission from ESC, which is fantastic news. We just have one condition that we have to address before work can commence, which is implementing a programme of archaeological work, which is now underway. The charity has made two donations of £1,000 each to HVC and Halesworth Dementia

feel better reflects the role of the charity within the community. Following serious consideration and discussion into purchasing the old Methodist Church, as a suitable building to convert into an appropriate setting to provide a social day care service, trustees decided that this was an ideal opportunity. The purchase of the property has taken some time to complete, largely due to Covid, but we're now the proud owners of the former Methodist Church building. Our plans include converting the main part of the church into a suitable space to provide a social day care service, with a new kitchen facility and toilets, finding a suitable provider to run a social

Our AGM on Thursday 21st October, was the first time in eighteen months since we last met as full members, face-toface, although trustees have had socially-distanced Covid-friendly meetings. As a charity (like everyone else) we had to adapt to the challenges and restrictions of Covid-19, obviously not being able to meet face-to-face for some time and carrying out our work and discussions online and through emails. At the beginning of the year, trustees completed the conversion of the charity into a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and we're now called the Friends of Halesworth Community Health and Care (FoHCHC), which we

What's all the mud spread about near the Community Orchard? The ditch in the Black Poplar meadow needs to be dredged now and then to provide better habitat for voles and clear water for dragon and damselflies, and other wildlife. Mark Woolnough and Olly have done a terrifically neat and considerate job for us, spreading the mud as thinly as possible so that the new growth will come through easily. There's also a new dam at the end to separate it from the dipping-platform ditch, because that ditch does occasionally get contaminated by water coming under the railway embankment carrying discharges of we don't quite know what from the built-up areas beyond. Olly also made good some of the low-lying areas near the ends of the ditches which get very wet and muddy in winter time, so hopefully those pinch-points will be easier to walk this winter. The haymaking is almost finished for the season but there's plenty of other work going on. We're doing a careful cut along

for refreshments etc. but in the current circumstances, we're practising social-distancing and wearing masks except when singing, so opportunities for socialising are reduced. We'll reinstate the refreshment break as soon as people feel comfortable to chat. We always welcome new members and our next rehearsals are November 21st, December 5th and December 19th. If you're interested, come along to a rehearsal. Your first session is free! For further details and schedule of rehearsals, please see our website: hcc1.no-ip.info, or email: halesworth.community. choir@gmail.com.

We're an 'open access' community choir - open to all, without audition, regardless of ability or previous singing experience. There's no need to be able to read music, as all songs are taught by ear (although scores are available). We sing an eclectic mix of music, ranging from the work of local songwriters to pieces from all around the world. Our new singing year started on Sunday November 7th and we're learning a programme of songs that we hope to perform in June or July, 2022. We meet every other Sunday morning (10:30am-12:30pm), usually at The Cut Arts Centre in Halesworth (IP19 8BY). This would normally include a break

—————————————————————

Hello again. It's been a challenging two years for everyone and the Shed has been no exception. I'm happy to report that attendances are growing slowly but surely. We had a grand total of twelve members on a recent Wednesday session. Member numbers are picking up and new assignments are coming in again. So if you're feeling a bit more confident and want to get stuck into something new, why not come along and join us. I'm sad to report that one of our members passed away recently. Michael Corker, a long time member, had been fighting cancer for the past two-three years and finally succumbed in September. He's missed at the Shed and our best wishes go to his wife Mary and family. By the time you read this, we'll have held our AGM and have new Trustees and a new Workshop Support Group looking after the Shed and its continued success and growth. Many thanks to retiring Trustee Ray Roy for his contribution over the past three years. He'll be a welcome face around the Shed as we move forward. Edward Creasy (the High Sheriff of Suffolk), his wife Penny and Rachel Sloane from the Suffolk Community Foundation visited the Shed on Thursday 16th September. They were welcomed by our Trustees and a good dozen or more Shedders on hand to show the party round and share their experiences and

endeavours. They were impressed with the examples on show and explanations the Shedders gave of the reasons they became members. The camaraderie that the Shed evokes was plainly on show with plenty of laughing and joshing while the tour progressed, also a good deal of serious conversation around the value and contribution of the Shed to members wellbeing and mental health. The visit concluded with Edward presenting the Shed with a certificate commemorating his visit. He said that the visit had surpassed his expectations and that the stories he had heard about the Shed were more than borne out. He was impressed with the way the Shed has contributed so much to the lives of the members and to the community, as a place where people of widely varying backgrounds, skills and experiences could contribute to and learn from each other in convivial and collegiate surroundings. Thanks to the Sheriff and his guests and to the Shedders who together made it a memorable visit. We've recently rescued a large quantity of recycled heavy duty decking boards, ideal for making substantial planters, sturdy picnic

tables, garden benches etc. Please get in touch if you might like us to make you something like that. One of our members, Chas Keyes, is a keen plastic model maker and comes to the Shed to use our small items benches. Here you can sit at the bench with plenty of daylight, plus other lighting when required, and model to your heart's content. In his own words, his motivation is: "I'm interested in camouflage and heraldry and how they're sometimes combined in the history of aviation. Not really interested in warfare as such but it's impossible, indeed unwise to ignore the implications of it and the repressive governments who wage it, often against their own people, using aircraft." We want to encourage others to join Chas in making interesting small scale modelling projects. Please come and see us, have a cuppa and a biscuit and we'll be happy to show you around. We're situated on Norwich Road just behind Chinny's. You'll see our sign when you pull in. Please park behind Chinny's as their car park is private. We're open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 10am-2pm and Saturdays 10am-12pm. Our phone number is 01986 835905 and our email is: shedhalesworth@gmail.com.

Leave a list with us at the bookshop for those friends and family who wish to buy you a gift and direct them our way! Abbie would like to thank everyone for their support and custom during a most challenging year. Your loyalty has been greatly appreciated. Please note, the bookshop will close at 2pm on Christmas Eve and Abbie, Alison and Karen look forward to seeing all their customers in the New Year. Reopening dates and times will be posted in the shop and on the website. Finally, Abbie, Alison and Karen would like to wish all their customers a peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year.

Halesworth Fairies who donated the prize money, Durrants and Hetty's Little Copy Shop for doing the printing, the Library, Halesworth Bookshop, Hideout Café and Edwards Restaurant for selling the trail entry forms, the Town Council for placing the ad in the Community News, and to everyone who took part. It really

was a community event. The most popular scarecrow display was Carnage and Venom at Edwards Restaurant, with Elmo at the White Hart coming second, followed by the M&Ms at Denson's and Hetty's, and the Tiger who came to Tea at Huus. Dare we ask... Can we do it all again next year please?

Our October monthly meeting at The Cut was a very enjoyable delve into the past with a fascinating talk about the beginnings of the Women's Land Army during WWI. Our presenter, Helen Frost, brought the experiences and hardships of those pioneering women to life with her vivid descriptions. On Tuesday 16th November at 2:30pm at The Cut, Halesworth our speaker will be Tony Diamond who will give an illustrated talk about the Mayflower and Pilgrim Fathers including some information on local connections.

On Tuesday 14th December we will have our Christmas Social at The Cut with Mark Mitchells as guest entertainer. We look forward to meeting our members at our monthly meetings. Nonmembers are also very welcome. There is a fee of £4, payable at the door for non-members. Our new members coffee hour takes place in The Cut Café from 11am-12pm on the last Friday of the month. Come and meet us to find out what the u3a is all about. For details of our activities, go to: www.u3asites.org.uk/halesworth/ groups.

Gippeswyk Singers are pleased to announce their Christmas 2021 concert on Saturday 11th of December at 7:30pm at St. Mary and St. Peter Church in Barham conducted by our new musical director, Janette Ruocco. Woodbridge Cruising Club As winter approaches, Woodbridge Cruising Club members are enjoying a full range of activities, with weekend lunchtime bars, as well as dancing, maintenance parties and the Monday afternoon group with coffee and cake. Wednesday suppers are a welcome interlude to cold dark nights, with delicious home cooked food, and the chance to socialise. These continue until spring, when boats are back in the water. The winter walk programme is now well into its stride, with Monica and Janet leading a November walk from Levington and along the Orwell, giving a different view for sailors. This is a four-mile stroll, along the side of the marina, round the lake, across farmland, with glimpses of the Orwell. All walks are researched and led by members, and are a

regular Thursday event. The first Sunday talk of the new season was Andy Beharrell about the Army and Navy forts built offshore in the Thames Estuary, and North Sea. This was an amusing, humorous and entertaining talk, with nostalgic photos of pirate radio stations and the principality of Sealand. Andy is also a trustee of The Woolverstone Project which provides sailing for those with disabilities throughout the year at Alton Water and during summer on the River Orwell. Robert Simper's talk was on people who made the River Deben, and gave an insight into some of the characters at the very heart of the River Deben over the years and who have contributed to the rich character of the river. Future talks are by our very own Captain Peter King on 'Thermopylæ - The finest clipper

of them all', and Paul Bragg on Biscay Ports. If these sound intriguing, why not join WCC to discover more. The November AGM was well attended, and reports submitted from the treasure and cruise captain Andy, who organised the wonderful summer cruises enjoyed by all. There's a range of social events, from the Black Tie Commodore's Christmas Party, the New Year's Eve party and more, and members are looking forward to these. The club has a wide range of events throughout the year (nautical and land-based). If you're keen to join, do visit the club website: www. woodbridgecruisingclub.org. New members are always welcome, whether you own a motorboat or yacht, or are keen to start sailing.

charge. • Other loss relief (which may be lost if not claimed) can be used instead. • There is a large Balancing Charge (where on disposal the relief you have had exceeds residual value) ahead upon a planned cessation. A few points to consider when considering waiving your entitlement: • HMRC cannot force you to make a claim for CAs each year. • You need to do the maths. • You can choose to waive some or all of any capital allowances. • Consider the future. • You may end up waiving your entitlement to CAs at one rate to replace it in a later year with a lower rate (but ultimately, you'll still receive the same amount of allowance over the life of the asset. It's just the timing of when you receive the relief that you're adjusting). • Try to get the CA claim right first time, as HMRC take a dim view to reopening accounts. • Take professional advice unless you understand the implications. By not automatically claiming every allowance at the first

127368

For tax purposes, the method of claiming asset depreciation is known as Capital Allowances (CAs). These operate on a reducing pool of value basis using HMRC-prescribed rates ranging from 2% to 100% depending on the asset (and tax year) involved. These allowances are then treated as deductions against your annual profits. But must you claim them? The answer is no. You're not forced to claim CAs each year and there several reasons why you may choose to waive your entitlement, especially as you generally don't lose the unclaimed value (so you're able to continue claiming in a following year where you left off). You may wish to waive CAs when: • Your profits are low enough to be covered by your personal allowances and by claiming CAs, they don't affect your tax and/or NIC liability. • You wish to increase the effectiveness of any averaging claim. • Higher profits are needed for pension or mortgage purposes. • Claiming them might trigger an excessive Gift Aid donation

12% of people over 16 in Suffolk are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes...

Manager From £6,000 p.a

Could you be one of them? You can check your risk and reduce your chances of developing the condition with help from the NHS and the National Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP). Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable through lifestyle changes. The NDPP is free to join and has a proven track record of success in helping people reduce their chances of developing the disease by supporting them to maintain a healthy weight, eat better and be more active. Anyone can check their own risk status and find out if they're eligible to join the programme by completing the 'Know Your Risk' online assessment on the Diabetes UK website: www.riskscore. diabetes.org.uk/start. People who reach a risk score

of sixteen or above will be given instructions on how to join the programme. Participants are booked into group classes which are currently being delivered remotely. Classes are available in eighteen languages and participants may have a friend or relative alongside them for support if necessary. Those who'd rather not attend group sessions for practical reasons or because they have learning difficulties or mental health issues, can request one-toone coaching with a specialist dietician over the telephone and track their progress via an app. Dr David Egan (GP and

Wellbeing Norfolk and Waveney

Diabetes Lead for the NHS Ipswich & East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group) said: "We know this course can work very well for the people who stick with it. Type 2 diabetes is currently one of the biggest threats to our population's health and yet it's a condition which can be delayed or prevented. I'd encourage everyone at risk of diabetes to assess their risk as diabetes can lead to kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, sight loss and amputations. It also makes it more difficult for people to fight serious conditions such as cancer and heart disease and viruses such as Covid and flu."

It's been four years in the making. We've researched, we've commissioned reports but most importantly of all, we've consulted. Now, we need to know what you think of our draft Neighbourhood Plan. The Halesworth Neighbourhood Plan is about protecting what you value most about the town as well as identifying potential opportunities to enhance and improve. We cannot necessarily stop developers building, but we can ensure that they apply proper standards of design and that the green spaces and play areas you love are protected. There are some aspirational ideas in the plan, but there are also nineteen formal policies, protecting our town for the future. On Monday 1st November, Town Councillors approved our draft plan and so it now goes through a rigorous consultation process called 'Regulation 14'. We'll be writing to over sixty-five organisations, consulting local businesses but most importantly of all, we want to hear from YOU. You have until the 17th December to tell us what you think about our plan. You can download a copy from the Halesworth Town Council website or you can find a copy and forms for commenting at the Library or Town Council

Offices. Remember, we cannot change developments that have already been agreed or are in the Waveney Local Plan. On Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th November, over 140 people joined us for the Neighbourhood Weekender. A further twenty-six people joined us online and by live stream (so sorry about the poor sound quality). Thank you for those of you who shared your questions and concerns and thank you to those of you who filled in our comments forms. And thanks to Rev Jane Held and St Mary's PCC, Simon, Gwen, Gabrielle and Jo who helped with the teas and Juddy Leach who provided the van. Our weekender reminded us how much you value Halesworth and how passionate you are about protecting it. You love the green spaces, the mix of shops and businesses that make the Thoroughfare buzz. Many of you also spoke about your worries that long-promised plans for new sports facilities, new retail opportunities will never come to fruition. We believe our plan shows the ways that we can act now for future generations, safeguarding what we cherish about Halesworth but also highlighting exciting opportunities for the future. Now, it's over to YOU to tell us what you think.

The last few weeks have been a busy period at The Pear Tree Fund, as demand for our services and support has continued to increase. We welcomed our new Information and Advice Coordinator, Caroline Goldsmith, to the team at the Pear Tree Centre. We welcomed the return of the Parkinson's and Dementia Carers Support groups to the centre. Our team started a new fortnightly Friday morning general carers support group, and a cancer support group is soon to follow. We'd like to hear from people who'd be interested in helping develop support groups for diabetes and stroke. We've had stalls at both the Bungay and Beccles Infomarkets organised by East Suffolk District Council and made useful links with other local organisations. We took delivery of a 'Grandpad', a tablet computer designed to help older people connect with the wider world and reduce loneliness and social isolation. Our team can provide a demonstration of the 'Grandpad' and help local people to acquire one on free loan from the District Council. The Pear Tree Fund provides holistic wellbeing and bereavement support, information and advice and access to support groups, to anyone with a life-changing illness, long-term condition and their families and carers, living in East Suffolk and neighbouring parts of Mid-Suffolk and South Norfolk. Community memorial event People of all ages were invited to remember those that had lost, share stories of what helped in grief and explore ways to support each other at a special event to mark World Compassionate Communities Day on the 1st November at Kaliwood in Holton. Philip Carr-Gomm, psychotherapist and former Chosen Chief of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, led an inclusive opening and closing ceremonies and a remembrance fire walk. The Pear Tree Fund and Kinda Education worked in partnership for months to create this opportunity for the

community to come together in remembrance and celebration. Activities included mortal yarns storytelling, compassionate conversations, Samhain weaving, decorating glass lanterns, creating a memory tree and 'letting go' with leaves. Further events are planned for the winter solstice and equinox with smaller workshops held in the intervening months. Dee's Den fashion show A fun-filled evening of fashion and fizz took place at the Pear Tree Centre on Friday 12th November at the inaugural Dee's Den fashion show. The evening was a showcase of the finest selection of pre-loved clothes stocked at Dee's Den, our charity shop in Halesworth. A dazzling array of accessories were also on display. Our amazing models wowed the audience on the catwalk accompanied by an exciting selection of music, ranging from Abba to a Superman-inspired pyjama section and a James Bond-themed evening-wear finale. The audience enjoyed a glass of prosecco, tasty canapés and a delightful sweet. Thank you to Edwards Restaurant in Halesworth for donating a delicious array of chocolate treats. After the show, there was an opportunity to buy the clothes features on the catwalk and a selection of other high quality pre-loved clothes and accessories from Dee's Den. We've been inundated with requests to host another fashion show from both those who attended and others who missed out on obtaining a ticket. Watch this space! The money raised will help us continue to support people with life-changing illnesses and longterm conditions, as well as their families and carers.

We'd like to thank Halesworth Golf Club and especially the team captains, for all their support this year in raising funds for us. Members of Halesworth Golf Club have been very generous in their support. We're grateful to other local organisations who have raised money for us over the last two months, including Bramfield Bingo Club (£717.13), Queen's Head Bramfield (£166.94) and Bramfield harvest supper (£25). A special mention to Joy Ayes of Joy's Junk, who has regularly raised £150 a month at the Laxfield community market. We received donations in memory of Alison Ringwood and Pamela Gray. Thank you to their family and friends for supporting The Pear Tree Fund. Over the last three months, we've received many donations from individuals. We'd like to thank: P Bones, Mr and Mrs Cunningham, J Edward and J Smith, A Langford, D Penman, C Lloyd, Rachel Booth, J Clarke, David Watts and F Phillips, for their generous donations to our charity. Congratulations to Mr Witherby, who won both second and third prize in October's 50:50 Club draw. The 50:50 club helps to raise funds for the charity and enables us to support more people that need our help. If you're interested in joining the 50:50 club, you can find out more information and register on our website.
