2 - February 2022 - Halesworth & Southwold Community News

Just Nice Things will be closing on Saturday 26th February. I opened the shop in 2012 with my late husband John and I have really enjoyed running the shop with all the lovely and talented crafters who have shelf space with me. I would like to give special thanks to Dennis, Rosemary and Rita who have helped behind the counter with me, and Kaz who looked after the shop's Facebook

page and photographs. I will miss all the great customers and friends who have supported the shop over the years. Thank you all. We will not be disappearing completely from the town as I will continue to run the iChameleon pop-up shop and will occasionally be popping-up in there. Any enquiries for the iChameleon, please email: brenda@ justnicethings-halesworth.co.uk.

Expansion of Suffolk primary school underway to create more than 100 extra spaces Works to expand a primary school in Suffolk, creating an additional 105 spaces for pupils, are now underway. The project at Edgar Sewter Primary School in Halesworth, costing in excess of £1 million, will include two extra classrooms, a meeting room and library within a new standalone block. It's being built by Ipswichbased construction firm, SEH French, with design works completed by Concertus as part of the Suffolk County Council Framework. Katherine Milk (Executive Headteacher, Edgar Sewter Primary School, part of ASSET Education) said: "We're very

excited to see the expansion of our school underway, providing local pupils with brand new facilities. The extra space will allow us to provide more children with the ideal environment to assist with their education." The start of work was marked with a turf-cutting ceremony attended by pupils and staff from the school, SEH French and Concertus in December 2021. In addition to the new standalone block, the existing building will be remodelled to provide additional classrooms, a staff room, and external canopies. Children will also benefit from a brand-new hard play area, new footpaths, and landscaping of the school grounds.

Once the project is complete, the school will have a total of 420 places, plus a nursery. Neil Pryke (Contracts Manager, SEH French) said: "SEH French is always happy to support the local education sector and the project at Edgar Sewter Primary School will do exactly that. The additional spaces and facilities will benefit local children for years to come as they enjoy their first stage of education. This is a great project to be a part of and we're very happy to work alongside Concertus once again as part of the Suffolk County Council Framework." The new expansion will provide pupils with energy efficient classrooms with excellent natural light and ventilation. This will be a fantastic educational facility which will enhance the existing school accommodation and we look forward to working with Suffolk County Council and SEH French to deliver this project for the local children." Rachel Hood (Cabinet Member for Education, SEND and Skills at Suffolk County Council) added: "This school expansion was needed because of the number of new homes being built in the area. We've worked with East Suffolk Council (ESC) to make sure we meet the needs of local families and ensure the local schools' infrastructure fully supports local population growth." The works at Edgar Sewter Primary School are being funded by ESC's Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), a charge that local authorities can access to help them deliver the

infrastructure needed to support development in their area. Cllr David Ritchie (ESC's cabinet member for Planning and Coastal Management) said: "CIL helps to support essential improvements to schools, health services and community facilities. In September, we allocated £6.3million in CIL funding to seven major projects across East Suffolk and four of these projects were required to support growth in Halesworth. Many of these projects were educational settings, where improvements are needed to support new developments in the area and help enhance the lives of local families. I'm delighted to see this project underway." It's expected to be complete in September 2022. SEH French is a construction company based in Ipswich but operating across East Anglia. As part of One Group Construction, SEH French has delivered countless high-quality projects in sectors including education, commercial, medical, residential, and more. SMILE Café

Saxmundham & District Rotary Club

Christmas collections for Suffolk Home Start

First day of a new pop-up café in Saxmundham What does Fairtrade mean? Is it a label on bananas in the supermarket? A certification system for supplying products? Fairer pay for farmers or ethically produced goods for shoppers? In March, the Woodbridge Society will welcome the Chief Executive of The Fairtrade Foundation to talk about the wideranging work of his organisation. Michael Gidney has worked in the field of international development for thirty years, with a particular focus on fighting poverty through trade, and has been running Fairtrade for ten years. His favourite Fairtrade product is Zaytoun Palestinian Olive Oil. "It's wonderful quality and it supports smallholders farming in incredibly challenging

circumstances." Michael Gidney's talk will be on Wednesday 2nd March at 7:30pm in the Woodbridge Society's new home: Quay Church near the bottom of Quay Street. Visitors are very welcome and are asked to make a donation of £5. For more information about the Society and the important work it does to conserve the quality of our town, visit: www.woodbridgesociety.org. uk. Also, don't forget that one of Suffolk's favourite speakers Charlie Haylock is visiting the Society on Thursday 3rd February at 7:30pm. His talk is called Charlie and The Dig - about his role working with the actors in this popular film.

First in line, as the SMILE Café relaunched at the new Fromus Centre, was Saxmundham Town Councillor Roger Hedley Lewis, who had brought with him a small breakfast party to test out the new catering service in town. No sooner had the tables been set out, laid and sanitised, than the orders were in... A mix of tea, coffee and hot chocolate, porridge (extra thick), toast with jam, beans on toast and a full English breakfast. With a brand new commercial kitchen, new equipment and eight halogen plates, the head cook and kitchen staff were immediately under pressure to get 'firing on all eight'. The first Wednesday, with no promotion, was meant to be a very soft launch to trial the system but once service was under way, a steady stream of customers meant the kitchen service didn't get a break until 1:30pm! "I was very impressed with the new surroundings and the socially distanced tables. My all day breakfast was not only delicious but great value for money. I

Financial focus on...

Are you employing a carer? The number of elderly or infirm people who directly employ a care worker or personal assistant has been increasing in recent years. Whilst the funding may come from a variety of sources, the relationship between the service user and the care worker/assistant is predominantly one of employer and employee. This means that the employer must operate PAYE and NIC on wages, deal with autoenrolment for pensions and other statutory payments. Often the role of employer (the one giving the instructions, not necessarily the one receiving care) is then taken by another family member. These schemes are known as "Care and Support" (C&S) Employers. A C&S Employer is specifically defined as an individual who employs a person to provide domestic or personal services at or from the employer's

home where the recipient of the services (who may either be the employer or a member of the employer's family) has a physical or mental disability, is elderly or infirm. This is for directly employed care workers, not those employed by a Care Agency (who then controls which worker goes to which patient and when). If you use a Care Agency to find carers for you, it is vital to check whether responsibility for employing then lies with you or the Care Agency or, very occasionally, if they are self-employed in their own right. A C&S Employer can operate a simplified PAYE scheme, but not if the person operating the scheme already operates a PAYE scheme for other reasons. This can be used quarterly instead of monthly, and in some circumstances can be allowed file on paper if you are demonstrably "digitally

excluded" i.e: unable to use a computer compared to simply not wishing to. Further relief may also be available with the £4,000 employment allowance which works to reduce the number of secondary Employers NIC meaning it is not a grant of £4,000, instead a reduction of Secondary NIC of up to £4,000. For C&S employees, there's also an exemption for board and lodging provided to "Home Care Workers" which otherwise can be taxed as an accommodation benefit on the employee and on which the employer has additional

reporting requirements. Hope this helps. For further information, please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) via email: robin.beadle@ensors. co.uk. Disclaimer: Specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.

This summary is compiled from the records of Stephen Bartholomew of Beccles. Maximum temp: 15.5C (59F) on the 30th, compared with 13.3C (55F) in December, 2020. Minimum temp: -2.2C (28F) on the 7th compared with -3.3C (26F) in December, 2020. Average maximum temp: 8.80C (47F) in 2021. 7.71C (45F) in 2020. 7.49C (45F) on average. Average minimum temp: 3.51C (38F) in 2021. 2.74C (36F) in 2020. 2.72C (36F) on average. Mean temp: 6.15C (43F) in 2021. 5.22C (41F) in 2020. 5.10C (41F) on average. Air frosts: 2, compared with 7 in December 2020. Rainfall total: 3.07", compared with 5.06" in December 2020. (Thirty-year average (19812010): 2.27"). The 2021 total was 135% of average. Most rainfall on one day: 0.42" on the 9th. Wind direction, mainly from: South-west 11 days, south 5 days, west 3 days and north-west 3 days. December was milder and somewhat wetter than the longterm average. South to southwesterly winds which brought former sub-tropical air during two spells were largely responsible for the overall milder than average month for the time of year. The mean temperature was 1C above the long-term average. Six days (11th to 16th) and four days (28th to 31st) into the New Year had daytime temperatures in excess of 10C. The last three days being this month's mildest, 14.3C on the 29th, 15.5C on the 30th and 15.0C on the 31st respectively and 14.5C on the 1st January, more in-line with late March/ April and October expectations. The 15.5C was the equal mildest December day on my entire record with 21/12/1971, 28/12/1974, 24/12/1977 and 05/12/1979. The mildest night of 12.1C overnight 30th/31st was only marginally short of the previous best (12.8C, 4th/5th/12/2006). Early in the month, we were subjected to airstreams of a more

west to north origin which brought average or sometimes below average daytime temperatures and over two inches of rain during the first eleven days (only one dry). High pressure built thereafter and brought grey skies and sometimes almost still conditions particularly in the week before Christmas. The high incidence of cloud did at least limit the number of air frosts during the month to just two, although an air minimum of +1.0C or less was recorded on a further eight nights. From the 22nd onwards, another run of consecutive days of rainfall continues (even as I write on 4th January) although not of the same intensity as early in December. In fact, there's only been seven completely dry days since 23rd November. Again, there was no chance of a white Christmas which have been few on my recording history, only two actual snowfalls on the day in 1970 and 2010. However, snow lying on ground was noted in 1981 and near misses occurred with falls on Boxing Day in 1995 and 1996. Christmas Day this time however recorded the month's lowest daytime maximum temperature of 4.5C. There was one brief spell of wet snow on the morning of the 2nd during this month, which together with one in 2020, four in 2017 have been the only six December snow days since 2012. The 3.07" rainfall total finished off what had been a variable year to record an annual total of 26.79", just over an inch above average compared with long-term. This was one of five months to record total in excess of two and a half inches, compared to four months which recorded one and a half inches or less. This has been the fifth wetter than average December running thanks to accumulation from twenty-four rain days, the most for any month in 2021. However, this was just the third wettest of the year, October (4.18") and January (4.14") were higher in terms of volume.

In November, Edgar Sewter Parents and Teachers Association (Friends of Edgar Sewter) ran a Win Christmas raffle, which was a huge success. An incredible £2,472 was raised, which has enabled the school to purchase an additional fourteen Chromebooks, to be used by pupils in class. This wouldn't have been possible without the generosity of local businesses, who donated a range of incredible raffle prizes. The PTA would like to say a big thank you to the businesses listed below and also to everyone who purchased a raffle ticket. Miss Milk (Head Teacher) said: "We're so grateful for the support from our families, the local community, and the hard work and enthusiasm of our PTA. The Chromebooks will make an enormous difference to the learning across our school." The raffle was drawn by Father Dominic and Father Christmas at St Mary's Church on 27th November and the winner of Win Christmas was Kelly Burrows from Halesworth. Kelly thanked the PTA and said: "I still can't believe we won Christmas! I never win anything so was shocked when I received the phone call. It has made a big difference to our Christmas this year. We're thoroughly grateful. The local businesses have been

Nigel Roberts won the over 60s Bowls England pairs making that five years for them playing in the final, Nigel also narrowly lost the veterans singles in the finals in Skegness and Kim dyer won the secretaries singles on behalf of Blundeston. To mark the end of the season, a meal was held at Halesworth Golf Club. Due to circumstances during the season, the club elected a new chairperson, Tom Daly. Tom was re-elected at the AGM. At the AGM, a tribute was made to Jean Macheath, who was the previous chair and now a life honoree member of the club. Unfortunately with a great season, the club was also bought great sadness as two beloved members sadly passed away. In September the news broke that Dick Clarke, a much loved member of the club had suddenly passed away. The club honoured him at the AGM by unveiling a new shield in his name. And more recently Mel Dyer, who was also a much loved

team mate and friend in both the Wenhaston club and the Blundeston club. Both passings came as a shock to members and has left a gaping hole in the club, their memories will not be forgotten. Wenhaston Bowls Club would like to express their condolences to Dick's family and Mel's family. A lot of work has been done on the green since the pandemic including re-seeding the whole surface. This hard work is led by greenkeeper David Hambling, who is assisted by John Robinson and on occasions when needed volunteers from the club. The club and its members look forward to the coming season. If you'd like to join a friendly local bowling club, please get in touch by emailing: jake.moyes9@gmail.com. Social memberships and full memberships are both available. Basic coaching and training is available.

It's time to give your garden some love this month by giving it a bit of a tidy up and a quick assessment of any initial winter damage. There'll still be frosts and winter weather ahead but at least you can plan and prepare for the spring waiting to arrive. If one of your gardening new year's resolutions was to plant a tree then now is the time to make that thought become a reality. In the coldest months of the year, you can buy bare rooted or root balled trees which are cheaper and establish better. These are trees and shrubs that are lifted straight from the ground and should be planted by

the end of February whilst they are still dormant before there are any signs of growth (or by the end of March, possible into April, in the north of Scotland). Bare root and root balled trees can only be bought when the weather is cold because once it warms up, the root ball dries out too quickly unless planted in the ground. By planting in winter, it means that by spring and early summer, trees will have benefited from optimum growing conditions and had the opportunity to establish their root system whilst dormant. The key to successful tree planting is to ensure you

prepare the site well, first by digging a hole large enough to accommodate the root system. Avoid planting if the ground is frozen or extremely waterlogged. Your planting hole should be no deeper than the roots, but at least three times the diameter of the root ball. It's a good idea to soak bare-rooted trees for about thirtyminutes before planting. Place the tree in the planting hole so the first flare of roots on the stem are level with the soil surface. If you plant the tree too deep, it can result in rot and disease. You may need to also insert a stake for top heavy or larger trees. Refill the planting

Reserves round-up At the January meeting of the Southwold and Blyth Valley group of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, local Reserves Warden Jamie Smith gave us an update on four local reserves: Hen Reedbeds, Winks Meadow, Dingle Marshes and Reydon Woods. The habitats are very different, and a warden's job has a wide remit. Hen Reedbeds and Dingle Marshes share certain elements. Both have intricate dyke systems and reedbeds that require maintenance to keep them clear and renewed, as passing birds are attracted by open water and clearings. Both reserves rely on grazing by ponies or cattle to maintain balanced reed and grass growth. Bitterns, bearded tits and water rail are among the many occupants. Otters and water voles inhabit the dykes. Mink are no longer a major problem, but they're monitored carefully. Dragonflies, damsel flies, butterflies and moths all contribute to the wide diversity of the area. Winks Meadow is a tiny remnant of unimproved grassland near Metfield, surrounded by arable land and an old airfield. It maintains a

wonderful mixture of grasses and wild flowers, with five species of orchid, including the rare (for Suffolk) frog orchid. The Trust cuts the grasses for hay, and the collection of wild seeds, and sheep graze every two years to keep the ground broken. Reydon woods is well known locally for its wonderful bluebells in May. It is an ancient coppiced wood, and that tradition continues today. The rides are mown to keep them open, and encourage a variety of birds, like the bullfinch and nuthatch, and many dragonflies and butterflies. The Silver-washed Fritillary is doing well, as are White Admirals. The open areas are rich in wildflowers, with orchids, ragged robin and a host of others. We learned a good deal about the continual maintenance that Jamie, his team, and a host of volunteers make to keep this wonderful diversity fit and well for us all to visit and enjoy. Our next meeting is on Thursday 10th February at 7:30pm, in the Southwold Arts Centre, IP18 6JP. Ian Barthorpe will be telling us about the wildlife of Costa Rica. Entrance costs £3, to include refreshments. Under 25's free.

hole, firm gently and water in. Drought stress is common in newly planted trees so make sure you keep watering throughout the growing season. The quantity required will vary with soil type but thirty to fifty litres per square metre (four to six watering cans) each week in dry weather will do the trick. If you're growing your own vegetables, then now is a good time to sow lettuce seeds, both under cover and outside. If you start now, it'll give you a continuous supply that can be harvested throughout the year. Sow in modules or fibre pots under cover to have lettuces ready to plant outside in four to six weeks time. You can also sow outdoors, but use cloches or small poly tunnels until next month when the soil has warmed up, they will also provide your lettuce seedlings with protection from birds and slugs. Good varieties to start now include cut-and-come again Salad Bowl, oak leaved, high yield with green and red varieties, a cos such as

Lobjoits Green, dense, crisp heads with self folding leaves or the small butterhead Tom Thumb, perfect for growing in small spaces it matures early and has a mild taste. You can share the gardening love this February by preparing for spring and carrying out some basic maintenance. As the RHS says, this month there are signs of the approaching spring, with bulbs appearing and wildlife waking up as light levels and temperatures increase. There's plenty to do indoors this month to prepare for the season ahead. Outdoors, as the garden comes to life again, it's time to prune shrubs and climbers, such as Wisteria as well as evergreen hedges. Top three jobs this month: 1. Prepare vegetable beds and sow some vegetables under cover. 2. Chit potatoes (let them grow shoots) to plant out. 3. Prune winter flowering shrubs that have finished flowering.

Halesworth & Southwold Community News - February 2022 - 11

East Suffolk Council approves Halesworth sports facilities plans At a planning committee meeting on January 11th, East Suffolk Council (ESC) approved plans for sports provisions on the former middle school site in Halesworth. The plans for the first phase of development, submitted by Halesworth Campus, comprise full-size, floodlit grass and 3G (all-weather) pitches along with surrounding landscaping and parking. A second planning application for a future phase of development will be submitted later this year and includes a fifty plus station gym, studios for classes, indoor and outdoor changing facilities, and a café with outside seating - all within attractive surroundings. Subject to further funding, Halesworth Campus aims eventually to provide a sports hall and a much-wanted swimming pool. Halesworth has long been identified as being short of sports facilities in local

surveys and council strategy documents, and a shortage of pitches in the county and nationally also means the development will be very welcome. Halesworth Campus acknowledged the advice and support over recent years of Suffolk County Council and ESC and was greatly encouraged by the recent grant of £1.6m of Community Infrastructure Levy funds to go towards the cost of the pitches. Campus Chairman Tony Goldson said: "We've worked so hard to get to this point and we're absolutely delighted to reach this first important milestone. Halesworth Campus is finally going ahead." Work is expected to start on the 3G pitch in summer 2022. Pulse Design and Build, a national, specialist developer for the leisure sector, has been contracted. News from Halesworth Community Church One of the highlights of this last month was our church walk at Cratfield, followed by refreshments and an opportunity to refocus on our vision for the coming year. It's vital to guard our core values, build on those foundations and keep reaching out with God's love to the many people who look to the church for help. People shared their hopes and aspirations, we prayed, and we go forward into this New Year with confidence. Take time to visit the website. You'll find a wealth of material from podcasts to articles, covering a range of subjects from ME to depression. An example of how helpful this can be is a man who has struggled with depression all his life. He listened

to the podcast on depression and wrote: "When I heard your podcasts, it made my heart leap with hope that this might be able to help me in other ways to tackle my tendency to be gloomy and so live life in all it's fullness." Since writing that, he's received help that has increased that sense of hope, and we look forward to the day when he's free from those debilitating struggles. We meet at 10am each Sunday morning for worship, sharing, prayer and Bible teaching. Everyone is welcome. Those unable to join us in person can do so via Zoom. No Need to Fear A woman woke up and told her husband, “I just had a dream that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine’s Day. What do you think it means?” Her husband replied, “You’ll know tonight.” That evening, the man came home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it to find a book entitled, ‘How to Interpret Dreams’. Hopes raised and hopes dashed. It happens all the time. How do we cope? Maybe in my introduction, a good ‘heart-to-heart’ was needed with her husband. Sometimes that works, and sometimes it doesn’t. What does it do to us when talking doesn’t work? If you are already struggling with a low sense of your value, that would further dent it. When we doubt our value in life, that soon leads to fear. The late advice columnist Ann Landers used to receive something like 10,000 letters a month. When asked what seems to be the most common topic, she answered that most people seem to be afraid of something. They are afraid of losing their health, job, or family. They are afraid of upsetting their neighbour, alienating a friend, or committing a social faux pas. A devalued person is often an insecure person. Insecurity leads to fear. When events and circumstances seem to reinforce that inner fear, then those fears feel justified. Whether the worldwide pandemic or your personal circumstances, it’s easy to become convinced that fear is the only reasonable response. Some of the most frequent words on the

lips of Jesus were ‘Fear not’ or ‘Don’t be afraid.’ He spoke those words to fearful, sometimes terrified, people. It is possible to know that we are so loved that we discover that, as one of Jesus’ disciples, John, wrote later from personal experience, ‘Perfect love drives out fear.’ When we know that Someone completely understands us and loves us just as we are, then we need not fear. This year, we celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. As a 13-year-old princess, she gave her father, King George IV, a poem that he read in his Christmas broadcast to the nation in 1939 at the beginning of perilous times. We may be familiar with these words, but we do well to remind ourselves of them as we go into this New Year: I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year, “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.” And he replied, “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be better than light and safer than a known way.” Christmas has reminded us that we are not alone in this Universe. God Himself has entered the stream of humanity and loves us and wants to walk with us in whatever this year holds – but we have to let Him. He does not force His way in – He loves us too much for that. May we consciously turn to Him in trust and take the hand offered to us so we discover for ourselves the peace that comes from knowing we are truly loved. www.halesworthcommunitychurch.org John Sparkes

The Cut digital archive

177036

The Cut arts centre in Halesworth, Suffolk, has successfully fundraised £16,000 from Arts Council England and budget from the local authority Bounce Back fund to upskill employees and volunteers and to create a digital archive of artists talks and exhibitions. Over two-hundred artists have shown at The Cut and there have been fifteen group shows since 2003. Not all of them have adequate archiving, so The Cut hope to develop and produce a comprehensive archive and build on it with the continual addition of upcoming artists and exhibitions. Many of the artists exhibiting at The Cut go on to the Royal Academy and further prestigious international shows. Twelve local artists have been selected for online interviews and filming in their studios. These will sit on The Cut YouTube channel with provision within the ACE funding to upgrade The Cut website. Artists Gina Medcalf, Mary Webb (who has paintings in Rhythm & Geometry at the Sainsbury Centre), Coco Crampton, Fabian Peake, Charles Hewlings, Johann Don

Daniel, Simon Carter, Steven Lewis, Derek Morris, and Tony Casement (Chair of the Board of Trustees at The Cut) are confirmed for the project along with Bill Jackson, the last artist to exhibit at the venue before the third lockdown. The final artist in the series will be Laurence Edwards, who recently erected Yoxman on the A12 at Cockfield Hall in early 2022. Kasia Posen (local artist and lead on the project) explained: "It's been a huge privilege to interview all The Cut Digital artists. A very unique opportunity to discuss their art practices in depth, to learn about and share their expertise and diverse talents." Mary Webb (one of the

participating artists) said: "A really imaginative initiative. Setting up an archive on these lines will establish an invaluable resource not only for artists but also for those seeking to identify artists within different disciplines. It's at the same time a history of The Cut, and all the vision and effort that has gone into making it such a unique undertaking." The Bounce Back Fund from East Suffolk Council also provided training for The Cut staff and volunteers and new camera equipment has allowed live events to be streamed to people that feel uncomfortable with indoor events or those that can't attend. The interviews are now available on The Cut YouTube channel: www.bit.ly/TheCut-YouTube.

Gifts for Caryl In December, we held a lovely party at the Pear Tree Centre to remember our much-missed friend and colleague Caryl Coomer. Karen and Gordon gave beautiful speeches and it was lovely to be able to remember Caryl. Caryl loved the Community Larder and so we thought it'd be lovely if people could give gifts in Caryl's name. We were blown away by the many beautifully wrapped gifts that you donated. These went to the Community Larder to ensure that people who were facing a difficult Christmas might have a lovely Christmas Gift to cheer

them on the day. Thank you for your generosity. Halesworth Community Larder We're seeing more and more people and families using our Larder. Do pop down and visit the Larder, we hate waste, so if you have any unwanted staples or food items (as long as they are in date), please pop down and exchange them for something you do need. Also, there are lots of excellent produce and staple goods for you to make the best of. Some people having been asking about the larder's hens, Faith, Hope and Charity. They are still on holiday at a secret location and they are doing very well. We were delighted to receive a five-out-of-five hygiene rating after the recent inspection by Environmental Health. Most importantly, the Environmental Health Officer commented on what a wonderful job the Larder was doing. Something, I think, we can all agree on. 2nd Halesworth Brownie Pack The visit from St Johns ambulance covered how to place someone in the recovery position, how to check for danger and response, how to deal with different types of burns and about invisible medical conditions. The girls got their level 2 and 3 first aid badges. On the 9th of November, Sarah (squirrel) made her promise with Jenny our district commissioner and dolphin and penguin renewed their promise. For Christmas, the girls made their own mini Christmas cakes which they then decorated. The girls decorated baubles, which we then put on the tree in the church. On Wednesday 13th April, we'll be holding a fundraising quiz at the Ancient House Bistro, more details to follow nearer the time. Shelia, Karen, Sarah and Jenna.

hard to judge because there are so many things that affect fruit setting and flourishing. The trees in the Orchard grow enormously vigorously because of the wetness of this area - not many orchards have an adjoining reed bed, which is a bit of an indicator. And in spite of the wetness there's still work to be done and mornings in particular can be stunning under frost. So, weather permitting, we'll be meeting down on the Green every Wednesday morning at 9:30am at the containers (industrial estate entrance, near the rail and river bridges at Three Ways). The website: www. millenniumgreen.halesworth. net carries news of past and future events, photos, wildlife records, history and geology. Contact the Green directly via email: thegreen@halesworth.net or (only for really urgent things) ring 07811 630946.

Since our last report, we've been very busy doing lots of activities, completing badges and welcoming visitors. We welcomed Abbie to the pack and said goodbye to Freya, Eleanor and Bella. We wish them all the best. In our last write up we, mentioned making a 50th birthday card for Girlguiding Anglia's 50th birthday. We recently received a lovely card back from Carterton Trefoil Guild. In November, we had visits from PC Green from Halesworth Police and St. John's Ambulance from Lowestoft. PC Green did a road traffic sign quiz with the girls, who were very good at knowing their road signs. PC Green also explained to the girls about his equipment and answered the girls questions. We'd like to thank PC green for his time.

Our next event will be a Jumble Sale on Saturday 19th February in Holton Village Hall. Please see our advert on the inside front cover of this paper. We'd be very grateful for donations of good quality items e.g. Men's, ladies and children's clothing, household linen, handbags, shoes, books, toys and bric-abrac (please no electric items as we're not allowed to take them). We also would be very grateful for donations of unwanted, new Christmas gifts. Please call me to arrange collection of any items you may have. Please do not leave anything at the village hall as we only hire it on the day and are unaware of anything left there. We always serve tea/coffee and delicious cakes, so if jumble

Whatever the weather, there's always something to surprise you on the Green - even if it's water covering the paths! The Green does act as flood protection for the town by allowing the waterways to overflow onto the meadows, so if your favourite route disappears, put on the wellies and be glad that the water isn't roaring into the Thoroughfare. A visit to the Community Orchard is well worth the walk. Either start from Quay Street down the track by the railway bridge or reach it by going over the river bridge at the first cattle grid, turning left and following the path. At this time of year, the hazel nut trees are covered in catkins and the apples, pears, cherries and plums are resting before next year's blossom and fruit. We decided to give the plums and cherries a break from pruning last summer to see what impact that has on the harvest, although it's always

It's wonderful to welcome 2022 with high hopes of life without a worldwide pandemic. Now is a great time to think about being a volunteer. There are a number of ways that you can help Halesworth Volunteer Centre (HVC) reach out to people in Halesworth and the surrounding rural villages. You can become a befriender, meeting fascinating people and helping them get out and about, or sitting at home for a lovely chat. You can join our Community Larder team, helping share food, get help and support if they need or just share in the Larder magic. And of course, you can become a Community Car driver, ensuring that people who cannot travel independently can get to their all important medical and other appointments. For more information, please contact us on 875600. Community Christmas Lunch Huge thanks to Halesworth Day Centre and Jackie, Martin and Maureen for making the Christmas Lunch such a success. It all looked delicious.

Excellent refreshments were provided by The Cut Café. In 2022, our u3a groups continue to meet and enjoy a variety of activities either in person or using Zoom. Our next "open to all" monthly talk at The Cut is scheduled for Tuesday 15th February 2:30pm when Eleonora Gardnary joins us from Ely to give a talk about "The Weaker Vessel: A Woman's Lot in the 17th Century". Thank you, one and all. Activities Our very successful 'Singing with Friends' and 'Art and Craft' sessions will continue into May 2022. Spring 2022 course

Popular bench replaced for benefit of Beccles community A popular bench in Beccles has been replaced thanks to funding from the Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth and villages Community Partnership.

The bench (located at the west of St Michael's Church Tower) was originally installed by Beccles Rotary Club in 2005 and has become a popular spot for local people to sit, chat and meet new people. Having fallen into disrepair, a replacement bench was needed and following a successful application for funding from the Community Partnership's Small Grants scheme, Beccles Rotary Club were awarded £436.00 to install a new bench and a plaque. Cllr Judy Cloke, East Suffolk Ward Councillor for Bungay and Wainford and Chair of the Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth and villages Community Partnership, said: "Rotary Clubs

undertake a considerable amount of charitable activity in local communities, which is often unrecognised or acknowledged. It has been a pleasure to support this project to replace the bench at St Michael's Church. Benches are so important as a means of taking the weight off one's feet when shopping, sitting down and talking to strangers or as a meeting point, so they help discourage loneliness in society." Speaking at the recent cheque presentation, Neil Peek, President of the Beccles Rotary Club, said: "It is with great pleasure that we dedicate this seat to the community, and may it bring joy and happiness to all that use it for many years to come." Find out more about your local Community Partnership: w w w. e a s t s u ff o l k . g o v. u k / community-partnerships.

25th February and the last session will be on Friday 18th March. You can book online at www.wea. org.uk or by telephoning 0300 303 3464 quoting reference no C2228381. The cost is £47.40. For further details, contact wenhaston.branch@wea.ac.uk or 01502 478977. No previous knowledge or qualifications are required to join this course. The WEA is a charity founded in 1903 to bring high quality education into the heart of communities. Many courses are now delivered online, a contributory factor perhaps in the demise of a number of branches in this area of Suffolk. However, in Wenhaston, the branch committee believes that face-to-face learning is still popular and we hope for the continued support of students. So get online or telephone and book your place now to join a friendly band of students. After all, who doesn't like a fun quiz?

December was, once again, a busy month for the Rotary Club of Woodbridge Deben as we assisted Santa on the Christmas sleigh. December 5th saw us at the very successful Christmas Regatta and Market at Whisstock's Place and on Saturday 11th we were in the Thoroughfare in Woodbridge. We also spent six evenings touring Martlesham and Kesgrave. Santa had a special gift for one resident of Martlesham Heath when Rotarian Richard Boother was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship, a Rotary award which recognises exceptional service to the club and community. In total, just over £2,500 was collected for our Charitable Trust, which

Due for completion in the first quarter of 2022, the garden will not only provide a wonderful green place to dwell and recharge, but also offers better access from the car park to the high street, massively improves the church/community hall facilities, provides a bandstand for concerts, talks and public events, an area for concert seating, and a communal space for local markets. But more than anything, it provides Leiston with the community hub it so desperately needs. Although the work is

Woodbridge Charity Christmas Card Shop success! The Woodbridge Charity Christmas Card Shop has had fantastic year raising funds for over twenty local and national charities. The shop is organised by Woodbridge 41Club, and proceeds are used to support local charities and other good causes. The shop is especially important this year as many charities are facing a significant drop in donations, due to Covid. The 41 Club organiser, Roger Parker commented: "I'm delighted that we have raised over £33,000 for a range of local and national charities. Over the past twenty-nine years, we've

There may have been a gentle clatter as the wall between the United Church and the Coop car park came down, but to Leiston Community Land Trust (LCLT), it sounded more like a mighty roar! After two years of consultation, design, planning and fundraising, the work of creating a magnificent community garden and thoroughfare has begun. The community spirit, foresight and generosity of the United Church has enabled the LCLT to pull together a cabal of public-spirited supporters to make this dream a reality. Nearly fifty organisations, ranging from large public bodies to small local companies, have made financial

raised £956,000, a staggering amount! I'm very grateful to all the shop volunteers who were willing to help in these difficult times. It's great that so many people continue to buy their cards and help these deserving causes." The shop stocked cards from over twenty different charities. This includes favourites such as RNLI, Marie Curie Cancer, Barnardos, Blue Cross and Amnesty. Additional local charities include St. Elizabeth Hospice, East Anglian Children's Hospices, Somersham Ward, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

We start this year thinking about the plans we have for the coming year and that the Woodbridge Branch RBL will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. To mark this occasion, we'll be holding an event on the 27th of August on Kingston playing fields. We'd like to invite charities and local stall holders to join us on the day with their own stalls and share in the celebrations. Non-charitable stall holders will be welcome and all we ask of them is a donation to the poppy appeal. If you're interested in joining us, please contact Brian Fisk the Branch Chairman on email: brian-fisk.rbl@hotmail.co.uk.

Horse Society, told us of his life working with the Suffolk Punch. He arrived at the Hollesley Stud in 1978 with a knowledge of horses but little idea of breeding, but with the help of a local vet, Ryder Davis, he soon became an expert. Bruce entertained members with amusing anecdotes of introducing the mares to the stallion, and the subsequent birthing and feeding processes. A founder member of The Suffolk Punch Trust, Bruce advised that the Suffolk Punch must be the colour Chesnut (not misspelt) although there are seven shades of chesnut from light to dark mahogany. Unfortunately, there is a limited market now for the horse and consequently the Suffolk Punch is high on the endangered breed list. In the UK, members of Inner Wheel support refuge centres for abused women, child centres and drop-in centres, school breakfast clubs and much more. Inner Wheel in Great Britain and Ireland raised over £2.8 million for various charities in the two years prior to Covid. All this was carried out in the spirit of friendship and service. However, in these testing times, it's proving much more difficult to provide service to our local community and, together in friendship, raise much needed funds for local charities, but we're resolved to do what we can. For more information about Inner Wheel, go to: www.innerwheel.co.uk, and for your local club, to: www. woodbridgeinnerwheel.org.uk.

Testing, testing... Yes, we live in "testing" times. President Sally Pearson asked members to do a lateral flow test before attending our January meeting and to wear warm clothes as all the windows in the meeting room at Ufford Park Hotel would be open. She didn't know that it would be one of the coldest days so far this winter, but all willingly complied. Testing times yes, as decisions were taken by the club committee to postpone a lunch planned for 10th January to mark International Inner Wheel Day, and our annual quiz so ably devised by club member Deirdre, and presented by her husband Tom Griffin has been postponed from February to a date yet to be decided. Both of these events would have raised much needed funds for charities, but, for now and with fingers crossed, planning for a Fashion Show in April will continue. The Memory Café, run in conjunction with the Woodbridge and Woodbridge Deben Rotary Clubs and held on the last Wednesday of each month at Woodbridge FC, with appropriate health and safety measures in place, will continue to be held for the time being. Members marked the passing of a long-standing member, Joan Hutchinson, who died before Christmas. It was also with great sadness that members heard of the resignation of a member. These are testing times, too, for the Suffolk Punch horse, the pride of the County. Our January Speaker, Bruce Smith, a past President of The Suffolk

Despite Covid, Woodbridge Chess Club have had a terrific start to the season, leading Division 2 of the Suffolk League with fourteen points out of a possible twenty. Our closest rivals Bury B are on eight points from twenty and, although a number of teams have matches in hand, promotion to Division 1 seems more and more likely. Particular congratulations go to Dan Such who has won all his games so far despite being considerably outgraded. In November, Woodbridge also won the U6000 East Anglian Chess Union Team Championship with Sam Gaffney and Harry Elman completing hat-tricks. Not bad for the youngest club in Suffolk! Woodbridge Chess Club meets for fun and competitive games at 7pm on Wednesdays, in the Cherry Tree Inn. We're keen to welcome new players and help

Project Owl - Secrets of the night "It's always thrilling to see or hear one of our native owls and I know these birds hold a fascination for many of us. We're fortunate to have a knowledgeable speaker from the British Trust for Ornithology to tell us all about them." Mr Smith added: "Doors open at 7pm with the talk starting at 7:30pm. Seating will be set out to give room for distancing and

extra measures will be in place to keep our audience members safe during attendance. Entry to the talk is £3 for adults, with under 25's free. Woodbridge Town Council Budget 2021-22 Woodbridge Cruising Club

Following on from the Council's investment in Kingston Field during this financial year, which saw a new pedestrian bridge, enhanced play equipment and (being installed during January) a new hardsurfaced pathway, the Council is considering making substantial investment in Elmhurst Park. In conjunction with East Suffolk Council's bid to the Government's Changing Places Toilet Fund, this Council is

considering allocating £20,000 to enable such a facility to be provided in Elmhurst Park. In addition, the Council is considering upgrading the existing toilets, and increasing the range of fully-accessible children's play equipment. Funding is also being allocated for a sensory garden. Whilst unable to find additional land for new allotments, the Council is considering the creation of a community garden, and having already jointly-funded

design work on a 20mph scheme for Woodbridge, is likely to fund its installation. Inevitably there is likely to be a small increase in Council Tax, to cover these major works as well as inflation; this is currently forecast as less than 20p per week for a Band D household. Before we finalise the budget, we'd like to hear the views of our residents - please send them by email to: deputytownclerk@woodbridgesuffolk.gov.uk.

#Justonebottle campaign comes to a refill shop near you! Do you feel overwhelmed by the problem of climate change and wonder what you can do to be part of the solution? Do you believe that small actions can have an impact? The 'Just one bottle' campaign was launched on January 1st 2022 by many of the zero-waste and refill shops in Suffolk and around the country. Here in Woodbridge, Cupboard Love is promoting this campaign to encourage people to try refilling just one bottle for the year. We hope to encourage people who want to do their bit to help reduce plastic waste to just start small. Making big, drastic changes to our shopping habits can sometimes be overwhelming and may not be sustainable so go for 'Just one bottle' instead - maybe your washing-up liquid, hand soap, shampoo or conditioner. If each household did this, imagine the impact it would make! There are about 7,000 homes in Woodbridge, so that could save 7,000 bottles from landfill! And if you find success with this one small change, then next time, take another bottle for refilling! By reusing bottles that have already been produced, we help to reduce the need for virgin plastic,

thus protecting the valuable oil reserves and sending a message to the petro-chemical industry that customers want change. It's often cheaper to refill your existing bottles and if you only need a small amount at a time, that's also fine! The household liquids stocked by the local refill shops are largely British-made using cruelty-free and plant-based ingredients. They're just as effective as regular cleaning liquids, without the palm oil, synthetic scents and harsh chemical ingredients. They'll be better for your skin and general health. Because these liquids are produced in this country, there's a reduced carbon footprint, especially as several of the suppliers offer a closed-loop system whereby the plastic containers are returned, cleaned and reused - so there's not even any need for recycling. Many members of the public feel powerless against the effects of climate change and that they're not able to contribute in the fight against it. The rates of climate anxiety are rising fast. This campaign is about empowering individuals and showing people that together, with one small change, we can ALL contribute

to the fight against climate change. You can find Cupboard Love at Woodbridge Market on Thursdays or Framlingham Market on Tuesdays - Where you can also refill your bags and jars with foodstuffs such as pasta, rice, lentils, nuts and dried fruit. Other local businesses who will happily refill your liquid bottles are: Refill Eco and Poppy's Pantry. Happy refilling - join the campaign today!

Although most boats are now lifted out for that essential winter maintenance, and sailing is at a minimum, there's still an active social on shore programme and members are currently enjoying Wednesday suppers and weekend lunchtime bars. The club are lucky to have a well ventilated hall, where all functions can safely take place. Woodbridge Cruising Club members celebrated the festive season in style with the Commodore's Christmas Party. Members enjoyed a sumptuous three course meal, with duck, followed by a choice of nine delicious home-made puddings. Many thanks to Janet Sparrow and her wonderful team who arranged such a lovely evening, and the choir who provided such fun entertainment. The New Year's Day walk was well attended by both members and dogs, and was an enjoyable stroll around Woodbridge organised by Bram, followed by welcoming, homemade hot soup. The last talk of 2021 was by Paul Bragg on Biscay Harbours, this was an amusing and illuminating talk; very inspiring for those who have not yet visited the Biscay Ports and

bringing back fond memories for those who have. Paul gave a personalised view of sailing the west coast of France, the best ports and anchorages, with numerous helpful hints, from weather apps to the best boulangeries. The Sunday talk programme of 2022 is well under way, with talks on the RNLI, South Africa in the Second World War, and Anglo Saxon ship building. Additional activities include Jetsam, the ukulele band with a Beatles concert in aid of the very worthwhile Woolverstone Project. Members are already looking forward to cruises for 2022, and Andy the cruise captain is working hard to arrange these. Planned ports include well-loved favourites such as Walton Backwaters, Ramsgate, Southold and London. Cruising in company is one of the best reasons for joining the club. If the activities sound intriguing, then log onto the club website, www.woodbridgecruisingclub. org. New members are welcome, whether you own a motorboat or yacht, or are keen to start sailing. If you're new to sailing (or need to brush up your skills), then the club's training officer runs RYA courses. Again all details are on the club website.

shadow puppets. Members also devised and produced a twentyminute film involving vampires and zombies. These performances served to educate the public as to their many creative abilities. External activities included gardening in a community garden, trips to the theatre, days out to the beach and visits to local zoos etc. Following on from its success, PASTEL later extended its services to include all vulnerable adults forming a weekly Cooking Club and setting up the weekly pop-up SMILE Café. "It's a truly sad outcome and we'll really miss all our 'past and last' members. It has been a genuine privilege for the volunteer directors to plan and implement such an exciting range of activities. Our aim was to encourage and support our members in their personal development and their greater enjoyment of life. Many friends have been made, laughter shared and precious enduring memories created. In particular, I'd like to offer my sincere thanks to all our 'past and last' volunteers, who truly helped to make it all possible." Don Tricker, Founding Volunteer Director, PASTEL CIC. But all is not lost. PASTEL leaves a legacy in the form of the pop-up SMILE Café, originally started nearly ten years ago. It's now been relaunched by the Rotary Club of Saxmundham and District, and will 'pop up' every Wednesday at the new Fromus Centre. For more information, please visit: www.smile-cafe.org.uk.

There is an opportunity to learn more about owls when Dr Hugh Hanmer from the British Trust for Ornithology gives a talk on the subject at Woodbridge Community Hall on Thursday 17th February at 7:30pm. The talk has been organised by Suffolk Wildlife Trust's Woodbridge Wildlife Group and Chairman Phil Smith said:

After over fifteen years of successfully providing the awardwinning PASTEL Saturday Club service for young adults with autism and learning disabilities, the volunteer directors have been forced to call it a day due to the enforced closure since March 2020 resulting from the continuing Covid pandemic. During this time, the changing circumstances for everyone would have meant a complete relaunch of the service, with all the associated funding and recruitment demands. Prior to forming the PASTEL Saturday Club (which operated for five hours, twice a month), PASTEL members and their parents had no opportunity for respite other than relatively expensive alternatives. As such, PASTEL met the needs of both members and their families, and is therefore a great loss to both. Although most members came from the Saxmundham area, such was the attraction of the service that some came from as far afield as Ipswich and Felixstowe, eagerly supported by their parents. As well as reducing social isolation and providing stimulating activities, clients were able to make new friends and boost their selfconfidence - effectively, forming an alternative 'family' outside their home and school environment. The wide range of group activities included public performances of Morris dancing, a hip-hop music and dance theatre event, a 'set' at the Sax Music Festival and a drama production involving

The success of the vaccine rollout has helped keep the Omicron variant at bay, and I am hopeful that we can begin looking forward to a happier and more prosperous 2022. However, the winter months are likely to be challenging for many, as once again, the UK is facing an energy price squeeze with home heating and energy bills set to rise. There are two main reasons why the UK energy market is in crisis - both can be pinned on previous policy failures, but neither is directly related to the UK's push for renewables. The energy price spike is due to the UK's reliance on imported gas, not its reliance on renewables. Gas accounts for about two fifths of UK energy consumption and, as the dominant source of home heating, effectively sets energy prices. Markets set the gas price and as Britain imports almost all of its gas, those markets are determined by global supply and demand. Additionally, UK nuclear capacity has dwindled,

and coal is, for good reason, a dirty word. Britain's base load, in other words, the energy on which we can always rely, has become increasingly dependent on justin-time supplies of liquid natural gas, imported into our homes via inter-connectors with the continent. This is not a strategy for long term energy security, and it needs to change. Energy security is expensive, but I'm pleased that the Government is finally getting on with the job of passing new laws to allow vital investment into new UK based carbonneutral forms of electricity. This may result in a short term rise in bills but will pay dividends in the long run - investing now will improve our energy security and make us less vulnerable to energy price rises and volatility in the future. The other policy failure results from the way in which the energy price cap is implemented. Many smaller energy suppliers are going out of business as they are forced to absorb price rises

and cannot change prices for a six-month period. This reduces competition in the energy market and in the longer term, further increases prices for consumers. At the very least the Ofgem cap should be set every three months and I shall be doing all I can to make the case in Parliament for this important change in how the energy price cap operates. As household bills rise again, the wrong decision would be to scrap environmental levies which only accounted for 23% of energy bills in August, compared with 34% for the wholesale electricity costs. It is the jump in these wholesale energy prices since August that has been the problem and not the green levies which provide an investment in keeping energy prices lower for consumers in the future. Ultimately, changes in both how we produce as well as how we use energy are needed to meet the government's net zero targets and, just as importantly, to keep household energy prices down in the long term.
