Thank you so much to everyone who read our Neighbourhood Plan and sent in questions, suggestions and comments. It's been fantastic to have your responses. Eighty-two households and four local organisations had something to say, and we have had formal responses from East Suffolk Council, Suffolk County Council and other professional bodies. We're very excited that some of your responses have led us to explore if we can recommend a further two sites for listing as Heritage Assets. We're currently responding to each of your responses and comments. This document will be part of the Consultation Statement being prepared that will show how we have consulted over the last few years. This will then accompany the redrafted Neighbourhood Plan and once all the documents are done they will be placed on the website and sent off to East Suffolk Council. We aim to have this done by mid-
March. Just to say, it's only your comments or questions and our responses that will be published, you will not be identified in any public document. Creating a Neighbourhood Plan involves plunging into a world of Regulations - amazingly we're just completing Regulation 15. Regulation 16 means that East Suffolk Council will publish the next draft of the Plan, the Consultation Statement and other technical documents and run a further six-week consultation period so you will have another opportunity to comment on it. After Regulation 16, we're basically just a Government Examination away from the final version of our Neighbourhood Plan and then it goes to a referendum where you have the final say. So, thank you again for all your helpful responses and please keep visiting the Town Council website to see how close we are to creating our Neighbourhood Plan for Halesworth.

INK Festival 21st-24th April 2022 After two years of being unable to hold The INK Festival, it's back big-time in 2022, and with a NEW format. The Festival is expanding into a multitude of venues around the town of Halesworth, offering performance spaces spread over eight exciting venues including INK headquarters at The Cut, The Rifle Hall, MR King & Sons, The Halesworth Museum, The White Swan and more. It's also increasing to four days for the first time. Each venue will have hourlong performances of three or more short new plays, showing several times during each day, so you can pick the performance venue and put together your own timetable of live theatre. This way, minimising the movement of audiences, eliminating queuing, and keeping the event as safe as possible. With a day ticket, you can see as many performances as you like of live theatre, as well as poetry, talks and much more. More than fifty brilliant, short new plays have been selected to be performed by more than thirty actors. There will also be performance poetry, stand-up comedy, kids' Play-in-a-Day, an art show in The Cut Gallery, a community stage with many locally written plays, talks and of

At the last monthly meeting, the Council (mindful of the pressures on residents with rising inflation and enduring difficulties from the pandemic) agreed that the precept should not be increased and would remain at the same level for tax payers in Halesworth for the forthcoming year 2022-2023. This means that the precept contribution for a Band D house, for example, remains at £81.34 per annum. The Town Council's precept income will however increase slightly (by 1.81%), as there are now more taxpayers in the town. There is a series of popalong events being organised at the Library which will give residents the opportunity to talk to representatives from the County Council, District Councillors, Town Council and other groups, if you missed the first one on the 15th February the next event is on the 15th March 10am-12 noon. Woodbridge Inner Wheel February 2022 meeting
with lunch in Woodbridge. Hats and blankets for premature babies knitted by members had been gratefully received by The Ipswich Hospital, and a number of knitted blankets will be taken to the next Inner Wheel (IW) District meeting for distribution at home and abroad. £190 was raised for Mary's Meals, and that sum will receive matched funding and will be used to provide school essentials for Afghan refugee children arriving in this country. When put together with money raised by IW throughout the UK, the cause should be well supported. Nationally in the UK (in 2021/22) some of the other charities being supported by IW include:The Stroke Association, Riding for the Disabled and Jessie's Fund. Locally, President Sally Pearson's chosen charity is Headway. However, because of the pandemic, like many other clubs, our fundraising and community service activities have been hampered and the club is having to consider the future. It's hoped that pandemic restrictions will ease before too long and the club may go forward with confidence. For more information about IW, go to www.innerwheel. co.uk, and for information on the Woodbridge Club to: www. woodbridgeinnerwheel.org.uk.
News from Woodbridge Riverside Trust Visitor numbers continue to be good, and we're delighted to welcome you all to The Longshed. Stewarded opening times are 11am-3pm on Saturday and Sundays. Entry is free and dogs are welcome. Many of our usual activities have been curtailed through the pandemic, but with the help of Zoom, the Friends of The Longshed were able to get together recently and hear updates from the Trust, and from our sister charity, the Sutton Hoo Ship's Company. The intriguing 'Ship Burial' painting by Robert Mellamphy can now be viewed in the John Gibbins Gallery here in The Longshed, and we're extremely grateful to the Mellamphy family for their generosity in making the painting available for display. The same artist created the bronze 'Ipswich Madonna' which is in Lady Lane, Ipswich. We have a number of exhibitions and talks planned for the spring and summer months,
Parent and toddler sessions at Woodbridge Methodist Church We're very pleased to announce that parent and toddler sessions have now resumed at Woodbridge Methodist Church. Please come and join us from 9am-11am on the first and third Friday of every month. We have a safe and spacious hall, with plenty of activities and toys to
amuse 0-3-year-olds. We charge £1.50 per family, which includes refreshments for the children and carers. Free parking is available. Please come along, we'd love to see you! For more information, please contact Deirdre Rothwell on: 01394 386381.
the first of which is on Saturday 19th March at 3:30pm in The John Gibbins Gallery in The Longshed. There is a lift to the Gallery. The talk is entitled 'The Other Burials', and will explore the stories of some of the other burial sites in the vicinity of the famous Ship Burial at Sutton Hoo and surrounding area. The talk will last approximately an hour, followed by tea and cake. Tickets are £5 to include refreshments and they are on sale in our shop which is currently open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 11am3pm. We have to limit numbers, so it's very much first come, first served. Woodbridge Riverside Trust is entirely staffed by volunteers. We anticipate being busy this year and are looking to recruit more volunteers to help with stewarding and staffing the shop. If you have soma time to spare and would like to know more about what's involved, please get in touch via: info@woodbridge riversidetrust.org.

With a greatly reduced number of members able to attend the February meeting, the decision was taken to ask the speaker to postpone her talk until a later date. Members were sorry to hear of the list of illnesses and injuries sustained by members that prevented their attendance. After a tasty meal expertly served by the friendly staff at Ufford Park Hotel, the meeting turned to plans for the future. Many fundraising events have had to be cancelled because of the pandemic, so it was good to make tentative plans for a fashion show to be held in April. More information will be available next month once the finer details of the event are finalised. Plans are also underway for the club to join in with the Woodbridge celebrations for Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Members were pleased to hear that there'd been some new attendees at the January Memory Café. The next Memory Café will take place on the morning of 23rd February, 2022 at Woodbridge FC when a karaoke session is planned. An exciting way to spend a morning! On the club's social side, members are looking forward to a guided walk by President Sally and her husband alongside Martlesham Creek, with a visit to St Mary the Virgin Church, Martlesham and finishing

Our February meeting was an opportunity to get together and talk about, amongst many other things, Parkinson's and the way it was affecting individual lives. This talk allows us to offer each other ideas, facts, support and personal experience to help in the management of this disease on a day-to-day level. Our March meeting will be held on Thursday March 10th when we'll be meeting at Old Hall Farm for coffee and maybe a stroll around the some of the pathways. Do contact us on either of the phone numbers below if you care for or have Parkinson's disease. We're here to offer support and friendship. The Devil's Dye blends historical fact with folklore, creating a powerful, fictional love story set in the 16th century. It follows the true event of immigrants from the Low Countries who came to live in Norwich when invited by Elizabeth I. The local legend of Black Shuck intertwines with the characters' lives forging the superstitious and menacing nature of this era. Wednesday 30th March at 4pm Meet Local Author Laina West at Southwold Constitutional Club, Woodleys Yard. Her new novel 'The Unnamed' is inspired by the witch trials in Aldeburgh. Imprisoned - unheard - unnamed. Aldeburgh, Suffolk, 1645. Mary Howldine, innkeeper, Puritan, follower of rules. Joan Wade, widow, long-despised, accused of witchcraft. As their two worlds collide, the terror grows. By Christmas, during the hardest
winter in living memory, there are seven imprisoned, awaiting trial and Mary's beliefs begin to falter. History has given us the names of the many men involved and how much they were paid, but only two of the women were named. Their lives were wiped out as if they had never been. This is their story... Reydon author L M West has extensively researched and told the sometimes harrowing stories of a women accused of witchcraft, first in 'This Fearful Thing' and now 'The Unnamed'. Laina will be talking about her writing and signing copies of her book. Tickets are £5 including a glass of fizz or juice. Campus Close-up: A look at the 3G pitch with trustee David Gallagher
HOOKER HOUSE DENTAL PRACTICE
3G pitches have the benefit of not being impacted by adverse weather (apart from snow which does prevent use). Their resistance to becoming waterlogged allows them to be played on game after game throughout the year without the surface becoming damaged. Having a local 3G pitch will also allow the recovery of grass pitches in the area which can experience becoming 'overplayed' due to lack of alternative spaces. Is the pitch just for football? No. A 3G pitch can be used for football, rugby union, rugby league, lacrosse and American football. It can also be very useful for general physical training, including use by schools. Football as a sport caters more and more for all ages within the community. Women's and girls' football are growing nationally and smallsided adult games for both men and women are becoming very popular during the week. Who can use it? Will it be available for everyone? The programme for the 3G pitch will be built around community use, local clubs being the main users in the evenings and at weekends. Educational use will be established during term time, with coaching, activities and holiday clubs during school holidays. Casual bookings from other local teams and businesses
will be encouraged. Other activities on offer will include birthday party provision, walking football, coaching and coach development programmes, and "pay and play" which is particularly popular with young people under 18 and uses vacant slots where users can simply book, or phone and turn up, to use the facilities. Our aim is to ensure that it is affordable for all. What are micro-plastics

In January, we were fortunate to have a return visit from Richard Symes along with Sam Hanks (Farmland Wildlife Advisor) from the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. They explained how farmers in our area are working together to create wildlife friendly environments on their land. Whilst commercial farming is a necessity, by working together it's possible to identify places where wildlife corridors can be created to join up areas that will attract and support wildlife. Early work of the initial group of six farms around Bramfield led to some great wildlife success stories, including the re-discovery of a species thought to be extinct. With the support of Suffolk Wildlife Trust, the group has undertaken a wide range of wildlife monitoring and management actions that have had great results for biodiversity across their farms. Read more about the scheme at: www.suffolkwildlifetrust.org/ news/farmers-work-togetherreconnect-wildlife. On Tuesday 15th March, members of the Suffolk Mills Group will tell us about how their voluntary association supports the restoration and care

managed and maintained so as to minimise any loss of crumbs into the wider environment. For more information about endorsement of 3G pitches by these sporting bodies, please go to https:// resources.thegma.org.uk/3gpitches. An alternative to rubber crumb will be available at some point over the next ten years, which is the usual life span for an artificial playing surface, at which point we will look at replacing
it with the next generation pitch. When will construction start and when will it be ready to play on? We hope to start on site in the summer and have the pitches ready for May 2023. For more information about the 3G pitch and how you can use it, please contact David at: dj.gallagher@icloud.com. Next time on Campus Closeup - a look at the grass pitch.
Halesworth and district u3a meet the farmer!
March 2022 It's good to have some sense of normality restored as the pandemic eases. As helpful as Zoom is, there's no substitute for meeting together as a church, worshipping together and seeing people and walking with them. There's something about genuine 'fellowship' that's irreplaceable. We continue to use Zoom for those who cannot physically join us. As a result of running courses in different parts of the country, several people take a holiday in the area and enjoy the friendship of those in the church. We look forward to welcoming them again this year. During these past two years,
and is the 3G pitch an environmental threat? Most all-weather pitches have rubber crumb infill, classed as micro-plastics, as part of their construction. There is currently no accepted suitable alternative to rubber crumb that meets national playing standard requirements. The design and construction of the pitch will follow best practice as set out by national sporting bodies, and it will be
of the wind and water mills in Suffolk. Suffolk is fortunate to possess some of the country's finest mills and Suffolk Mills Group has probably the largest collection of historical, technical information and illustrations of Suffolk mills in the country. There's no charge for u3a members, visitors tickets (bookable at The Cut or on the door) are £4. The talk starts at 2:30pm prompt, so please arrive in time to be seated in the auditorium. Holton Windmill Looking further ahead on Tuesday 5th April, we have a return visit from Chris Bell "the Weatherman" who will give us an insight into our East Anglian weather and what the future holds
Holton Windmill for our climate. Many of our u3a activity groups are back in action, please look at the groups page www. u3asites.org.uk/halesworth/ groups on our website for the latest information.

What is meant by "3G pitch"? 3G (or third generation) is a trade term for an artificial allweather pitch which looks, and more or less feels, like grass. Because it has been developed for intensive use, the 3G surface is hard-wearing and resilient, meaning more teams, more training and more matches. It provides a surface of consistent quality with excellent playing characteristics such as ball bounce and roll while also reducing the risk of injury and being almost maintenance-free. What type of 3G pitch is Halesworth getting? Halesworth will be getting a full-size 3G pitch which includes rubber crumb infill. A shock pad under the surface makes it suitable for rugby training as well as football. This type of pitch is approved by governing bodies like FIFA/FA and the RFU and is recommended by Sport England. The pitch area will have LED floodlighting, goal posts for all types of match play and a perimeter fence to control access ensuring the pitch condition is maintained to a high level. How big is it? Is it more than one pitch?
The general area of the pitch is approximately 107m x 70m. This will accommodate a fullsize pitch to FA standard and a surrounding 'runoff' strip for safety. Various markings will provide pitches for all levels of training and matches - from 'mini' soccer (5v5) to senior (11v11). Four 'mini' soccer games will be able to be played simultaneously! For more general training purposes, the pitch will easily accommodate fifty people. Ample spectator space will be provided outside the perimeter fence with limited spectator space within the fence, depending on the type of match or session taking place. Where on the Campus site will it be built? The pitch will be built on land owned by Halesworth Campus which is adjacent to the existing football pitches on Dairy Hill. Loam Pit Lane runs along the pitch's other side. The land, which was previously used for agriculture, will first require levelling as well as the diversion of power lines before construction can begin. Why is it a good idea to have a 3G pitch? What are the benefits? There is an identified need for playing pitches in the area, both grass and 3G. The local football club is growing and will require more and improved facilities.

Debbie Adams (our Area Fundraising Manager) reported on all the new developments for detecting and treating cancer especially trials that are taking place on a blood test that could detect up to fifty types of cancer (called the Galleri test). Unfortunately, our President Dr. Clark couldn't be with us as he is still recuperating, but he sent us a lovely letter encouraging us in the work we do. The committee wish him well and hope to see him at our Spring Fair in May. The treasurer was able to report that despite Covid restrictions as a group, we raised £9,611 from events, donations, the street collection, Christmas card sales, book sales and collecting goblets. Our funeral donations total for 2021 was £32,246. With a little carry over from 2020, we were able to send £46,000 to the head office of Cancer Research in 2021. We are sad to report that Dot, one of our long serving and loyal committee members, has decided to step down from the
committee. We're very sorry to see her go but she will continue to support us when she can. Thank you Dot for everything you've done over the years, you will be missed. After a short break for tea and cake, we continued with our committee meeting to discuss the jumble sale and our annual Big Breakfast. It was lovely to see so many of our highly valued volunteers at the meeting. We couldn't put on events without their contributions and help. A massive thank you to Spectra for so very generously sponsoring all our events in 2022. We're still looking to recruit two new committee members. Please contact me to discuss what we do if you need to know more before deciding. Please continue to visit Carol our book lady who sells books from her driveway weather permitting at 84 Dukes Drive, Halesworth. If anyone has new unwanted gifts that they feel able to donate for our Spring Fair, we'd be extremely grateful. Please contact me. Our next big event is our annual Big Breakfast on 19th March as always in Holton Village Hall, please see our
advert in this paper. Please come and support us everyone will be made very welcome. Thank you to all our friends old and new who came to our events in 2021 and raised an amazing amount. Dawn Davis (Chair), 01986 873640

Located about half-way between the Suffolk market towns of Halesworth and Framlingham, Laxfield is just a 40 minute drive from the famous coastal towns of Southwold and Aldeburgh. It has a population of more than 800, consisting of a mix of long established families and many who have moved into the area. The village is situated on the B1117 and close to the B1116 which runs from Dennington to Harleston. Just off the main road, called The Street, are the school and preschool, the village hall and the Baptist chapel. In the centre, near the wonderful All Saints Church and the historic Guildhall you will find the village store and two popular pubs. It is still mainly an agricultural community, although a good
number of small businesses thrive and many residents commute to surrounding towns or further afield for work. It is a village community, with a wide range of activities, making Laxfield attractive to all ages from the pre-school group to the sheltered housing residents of Hartismere House. The refurbished village hall is available for functions and events from weddings to private parties. Facilities include a perfectly sound-adjusted hall with a modern bar room and kitchen with all up to date facilities. New stage lighting has just been installed. Laxfield also has one of the largest (eight-acre) playing fields in Suffolk which plays host to much sporting activity
including cricket, football and This really is a great village in bowls with an excellent children's the heart of Suffolk with a thriving play area with a wide range of new and friendly community, a lovely equipment. place to live and visit.

People from Halesworth and the surrounding areas are being invited to find out more about the huge range of services, support and activities which are available locally to boost their health and wellbeing during a free drop-in event organised by the Pear Tree Fund. Halesworth Health and Wellbeing Infomarket will bring together a host of services and community organisations to showcase the opportunities they offer. This includes chances to join in with social activities, get out into nature to boost health and wellbeing or give back to the community by volunteering. As well as information for the general public, the one-stop-shop will also shine a spotlight on the specific support which is available to people with health and care needs, as well as their families and carers. Organised in partnership with East Suffolk Council, it will take place at the Pear Tree Centre in Bungay Road, Halesworth, on Thursday 3rd March from 11am-2pm. Everyone is welcome and free refreshments will be available.
Kevin Vaughan (Chief Executive of the Pear Tree Fund) said: "We're delighted to be working with East Suffolk Council to arrange this exciting event. It will give everyone a valuable opportunity to find out more about the support which is available within our compassionate and caring community to boost their health and wellbeing. As well as bringing together a whole host of organisations to showcase their services and explain how to access them, the event will also shine a spotlight on the range of volunteering opportunities which are available in the Halesworth area, as well as chances to take part in activities and meet new people. We hope that it will be particularly helpful for those with health and support needs and their families and carers, while also encouraging those who have been isolated because of Covid to start safely stepping back into the community. We'll also be highlighting the support which is available to those with long-term health conditions and people who have recently received a diagnosis, as well as older people who are feeling lonely or isolated. We'd encourage
as many people as possible to drop in during the day and find out more about the huge range of opportunities which are available to boost their health and wellbeing in a welcoming and friendly environment." Organisations which have already confirmed their attendance include: Halesworth Volunteer Centre and Community Larder, Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund, Kinda Education and Suffolk Police. East Coast Community Healthcare, Connected Communities, Suffolk Family Carers, INK Festival and Halesworth and District U3A will also hold a stall. A range of other third sector organisations, community groups and statutory services have also been invited. Details will be added to the Pear Tree Fund's website: www. peartreefund.org, once their attendance has been confirmed. To find out more about the support offered by the Pear Tree Fund or to donate to the charity, call: 01986 899655, email: info@ peartreefund.org or visit: www.peartreefund.org.

More than meets the eye Many years ago, I changed my car and decided to keep it overnight in the garage. It was a tight fit, so before I drove in each time, I'd stop, get out and turn the mirrors inwards. I did this for years. When I changed the car, I remarked to the salesman that I would like a car that had electric folding mirrors, and he said, 'Yours had those mirrors.' If only I had taken the time to find out exactly what my old car was capable of! There was more to my car than met the eye. Many people go through life without realising that there is more to them than meets the eye. As we go through our developmental years, we learn which parts of us appear to make life work, and we focus on them. That is understandable, but we're in real danger of missing some of the qualities that make life rich and worthwhile. In fact, the part of us that we don't get round to looking at properly soon feels a negative place to go.
Imagine that you're clearing out your loft and discover an old painting covered in dust and mildew that's been passed down through the family because no one knew what to do with it. You're going to be decisive, so you put it into the skip and think no more of it. The next day there is a knock on your door, and a neighbour who was walking his dog has your painting in his hand. He knows a bit about art, and the next thing you know is that he is telling you that, in his opinion, this could be a very valuable painting and, if you like, he'll get it valued for you. At this point, your attitude to that painting changes dramatically. It's now treated with care and respect instead of being 'in the way' and fit to be thrown out. It still looks in a bad way but under all that grime, there could be real value. Imagine your delight when you discover that your piece of 'rubbish' in the attic turns out to be a long-lost painting by
a famous artist and is worth 8.9 million pounds. There was more to that painting than met the eye! God surveyed his creation and declared that it was 'very good' - and that includes you and me. Our wrongdoing lies in the fact that we do not make choices that are consistent with how God made us to be. At the heart of teaching a child that wrong behaviour is unacceptable is the message, 'you are better than this.' We were designed to reflect the glory of God - just as a masterpiece reflects the skills of the painter. That old painting in your loft needed great care and attention from the art restorer before its beauty could shine through. God sent Jesus to this world to restore our relationship with Him and for that work of restoration to be completed as we entrust ourselves to His love and care and walk with Him. www.halesworth communitychurch.org John Sparkes

Holton & Blyford Village Hall
Our delight at being back to almost full strength was topped of by two things, firstly our President back from an extended stay in the USA and then an excellent speaker in the shape of Jeni Neill. Jeni spoke to us of the process of writing her book 'The Devils Dye', her research, which lead her to unexpected finds, and then the very basis of how to produce a book which is self published. Based on the Strangers community in Norwich in Tudor times, involving the tale of Black Shuck of 1577 and based in the geographical area stretching from Leiston to Norwich, it's a book very much of interest to our members. The book is available locally or on the internet.
The village hall is now back in full swing and really busy! Such a pleasure to see people enjoying the normal again. Sunday 27th March is Mother's Day and we're going to be offering a delicious tea for all. Sandwiches, scones with cream and jam, cakes etc, all with tea/coffee and prosecco. OPEN GARDEN Sunday 20th February
Tea, coffee, cakes and hot soup with crusty bread will be on sale. There will be a plant stall too.
At our February meeting, the Blyth Valley and Southwold Suffolk Wildlife group were treated to a visit to the tropical country of Costa Rica. Ian Barthorpe (from RSPB Minsmere) gave an account of the wildlife that he and his family enjoyed on their trip there. Wildlife tourism is key to the country's economy, and the natural abundance is carefully nurtured. Ian's wide knowledge and excellent photography skills took us around the country from east to west. The mountainous central spine divides species of birds, although there are strong similarities between them. The Monteverde cloud forests are hung in mists, with high aerial bridges for those with a good head for heights. Knowledgeable
guides, skilled at finding hidden creatures, adding enormously to the pleasure, and the family were delighted to end their stay seeing several "must-see" birds, sloths on the move, and a group of squirrel monkeys. The beautiful images showing the wide range of animals, and the colour and variety in the tropical landscape, gave us all a restorative boost on a cold winter evening. "Harvest Mice and Other Small Mammals" is the subject of our next talk on Thursday 10th March at 7:30pm at Southwold Arts Centre, IP18 6JP. Entrance costs £3, to include refreshments. Nearly fifty years of effort by local people for local people has benefitted the area with over a million pounds of funding for folks unable to help themselves, usually at times of crises. sponsor will receive a printed card bearing wording of their choice to commemorate their special person with the time and place of the tree planting. You might already have noticed that an earlier miniplantation is getting its feet down. These are three birches on the mound, put in by the Twinning Society to help develop links with our friends abroad. We have been delighted to welcome some new volunteers recently, and do remember that if you don't feel able or willing to get down onto the Green to help with work-parties, there are lots of less visible jobs to be done: keeping our profile up in this excellent and supportive local free paper, getting display material together for events, making sure we get grant applications in on time, reporting changes in the organisation to the Charities Commission, keeping the admin in order. Every small job one person does means that a box is ticked. Meanwhile (weather permitting), we'll be meeting down on the Green every Wednesday morning at 9:30am at the containers (industrial estate entrance, near the rail and river bridges at Three Ways). The website: www. millenniumgreen.halesworth.net carries news of past and future events, photos, wildlife records, history and geology. Contact the Green directly on: thegreen@ halesworth.net or (only for really urgent things) ring 07811 630946.
With many productions being postponed a year ago, due to the ongoing twists and turns of the Coronavirus pandemic, there was a big question mark hanging over venues this year, as Pantomimes everywhere prepared to return with their fingers firmly crossed. This question mark included local amateur dramatics troupe, Team B Productions, as they persevered against all odds, to finally bring their eagerly awaited production of Jack and the Beanstalk, to the stage of the Leiston Film Theatre, having postponed the show in January 2021. And so, with temperature taken, sanitiser administered and face covering in place, I took my seat amongst an almost packed venue, for a long-awaited return to Pantoland and there was surely an air of excitement that the show was actually happening. With the overture striking up, courtesy of the ever-brilliant Musical Director, Tom Horton, and the delightful students from the Chloe Kinrade School of Dance making their debut appearance in Pantomime, the fun began and without hesitation, Fairy Bean, expertly played by Grace Clutterbuck, set the scene with rhyming perfection, as we were whisked off to the Pantoland hamlet of Fiddle-on-the-Fen. In this fast-paced version of the beloved story, a scheming Dame Trott (Wayne Burns) does her best to resolve the family's penniless predicament, but despite the efforts of her unwilling children, Jack (Toby Young) and Jill (Lauren Major), they end up with little alternative other than
It is with great sadness that we have to announce the deaths of two members of the Halesworth Area Community Transport (HACT) team. Chris Molyneaux (one of our former drivers) passed away on Sunday 30th January after a long battle with poor health. Chris was a regular on the Day Centre bus for many years before ill health meant he had to retire. Our thoughts go out to his family at this difficult time. Also, one of our founder members, Dave Cask, passed away on Saturday 29th January. As one of the founders of HACT, he was central to the service from its start in the early 1980s right up to the week before he went into hospital in January. Dave has worked in the HACT office as a driver up until his 84th birthday and then served as a Bus Buddy until three weeks before he died. He was our Chairman for many years before becoming our President. Dave was awarded High Sheriff of Suffolk Volunteer of the Year in 2013, an award that was long overdue and thoroughly
to sell Daisy the family cow. But on his way to find the heifer a home, Jack encounters the nasty Fleshcreep (Vici Hadfield), who tricks Jack into swapping the cow for a stalk. We all know what happens next and after the obligatory interval ice cream, we arrived at the top of the beanstalk to meet the awesome Giant Blunderbore (Patrick Norman), who had dinner-plate plans for poor Daisy (Sky Henson and Amy Brewer). Thankfully, the Trott family wasn't far behind and with the help of Mrs. Cupcake the Cook (Mandy Baskett), they eventually rescued Daisy, destroyed the beanstalk and lived happily ever after, complete with a hen that laid golden eggs! Stand out moments for me included the rollercoaster of slapstick jokes and the randy Farmer Giles (Marcus Ward), who had one lady in front of me crying with laughter. The gags were all delivered with great timing and the hilarious television segment, which saw the Dame and her children replicating
various programmes to avoid capture was priceless. The If I Were Not in Pantomime sketch added traditional panto fun to the proceedings and the tiny tot dancers, complete with light-up tutu's were simply delightful. All in all, it was an absolute joy to watch such a highly polished production from script writers Wayne Burns and Stephen Ginger, that was bursting with colour and energy. As I leant later, a number of cast members had been unwell themselves as the show moved closer, but were unanimous in their desire to present the Pantomime by any means – and they did, much to the delight and appreciation of all those present. Hip, hip, hooray! Next year, Team B bring us the tale of Robin Hood, between the 13th and 15th January 2023, with 400 advance tickets already sold. The poster claims that the production will be the merriest of Pantomimes and if next year leaves me feeling as merry as this year did, I can't wait. I suggest you book your tickets while you can. Tim Mayhew.

Alongside the track, you'll find the first of some new miniplantations of native (British stock) trees: hawthorn, field maple, rowan, crab apple and wild cherry, clustered around one of our sturdy block benches. This is a response to the requests we get both to plant more trees and to have trees dedicated to local people, particularly people who have died. Trees can only flourish if planted at a certain time of year, so rather than trying to plant individual trees as a request comes in, we're planting these little groups at the right time and people can then make a contribution if they'd like to sponsor the planting. As always, we try to keep a balance between public enjoyment and ownership of the place with the feeling of the Green as a wild (at least semi-wild) place, so there'll be no plaques. However, every

Home Improvements just about making things look nice. New windows and doors do indeed look good, but they also have an environmental and economic benefit. Again, the latest technology is remarkable, windows and doors are readily available in a whole range of materials and colours. Invite one of the reputable local businesses to come and give you a quote and they will gladly pass on the benefit of their experience and knowledge to help you get the right product. Perhaps you would like to reconfigure the layout of your property to create an open plan living area or make the most of some otherwise unused space. This is where the knowledge and know-how of an experienced builder will be invaluable. Knocking down walls might look fun, but, you need to consider structural integrity, plumbing and electrical connections amongst other things. This type of work will need to meet building regulations and your trusted local tradesman will be able to
make sure all work meets current standards. Don't neglect the outside space of your home – it is the first thing anyone sees, and a newly landscaped garden or hardscaped driveway will not only look good and give practical benefits but it also adds value. As with all trades and services you will find a number of related businesses in the pages of the Community
News so give them a call and make an appointment for your local plumber, electrician, builder, decorator, carpenter, gardener and landscaper to come and give you some ideas and a quote for your planned work. Do you some research, get a colour scheme in mind, put together an ideas board and most of all be creative. David Burns, Community News

With the promise of the warmer, brighter sunnier weather soon to come, now is the perfect time to look at home improvements. Whether it is a simple lick of paint to change the colour scheme or more major works such as an extension or new kitchen or bathroom. There is nothing quite like getting hold of your house and moulding it to fit your taste, lifestyle and needs. There is a lot you can do yourself – if you are so inclined, simple jobs like painting and minor improvements such as changing curtains and furnishings. However, these days with busy lives, long working hours and families and friends to see and spend time with, many of us don't have the time, motivation and skills to carry out this work ourselves. Fear not, we are fortunate to have many local businesses on hand to help make our house our dream home. Of course, fashions and trends change regularly so something like a new colour scheme or a change of carpet and flooring can really lift your home and bring it up to date. It is always advisable to use qualified professionals when looking at new flooring – if you pick a quality product and it is well fitted it will comfortably last until you next decide it is time to redecorate. Similarly, new curtains or soft furnishings can add a splash of colour and fresh feel to a room – likewise, go to an experienced professional to get sound advice and excellent service. If you are looking at more major work then you need to speak with experts, after all, even the most enthusiastic DIYer doesn't want to be fitting new windows or building a conservatory. Of course, home improvements are not always

Mother's Day is observed in over forty countries and all have their own way of doing things. Here in the UK, we choose to mark the day by spoiling and treating our mothers. This year the big day is Sunday 27th March (get it in your diaries!). No one knows their mother like you do, so you are best placed to pick the perfect treat or gift. Naturally, there are all sorts of different options and avenues you could go down. Perhaps your mum is a real foodie. In which case, have a look around at the many great pubs and restaurants we have in the area and book a special meal. Be sure to call in advance to avoid disappointment. It has been a particularly testing couple of years, perhaps you have leaned on your mother's shoulder more than

you might usually. Well, why not go a bit further and buy a gift that means something to both of you and that will last forever. Who doesn't love jewellery? Again, you know your mother better than anyone so pick out her favourite stone, colour, style and surprise her with something special. It goes without saying, flowers are always popular and a sure way of putting a smile on someone's face. If you are not going to be able to see your mother this is a gift that can easily be ordered from a local florist and sent direct to your mother home or place of work. You can get some stunning arrangements for less than £20 so it is a superb way of showing you care. Again, if there are particular flowers that have a special meaning then be sure to ask your florist what they can do. If you are looking at
something a little different then why not buy a voucher for a local hair salon or beauty salon? Our mums are hardworking and always on hand to help whenever we need them whether it is emergency child care, dog walking duties or just a shoulder to cry on. How better to show them you care then by buying them a bit of 'me' time – a chance to be pampered and for someone else to look after them for a while. Better still, they can have a pamper session before you take them out for their delicious Mother's Day meal! In short, you can show your mother you love and appreciate her in many different ways. We have lots of great businesses in the area offering anything you can think of so why not get in touch with one of them and make your mum's day!

Update from Dr Dan Poulter MP The construction of Sizewell C will undoubtedly have an impact on our landscapes and wildlife, and to our road networks. Making the case for improvements to our local road and rail infrastructure as well as making sure that EDF protects our countryside, continues to be one of my main priorities, as your MP. In December 2021, the Planning Inspectorate asked the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to grant an extension to the reporting stage of the Sizewell C project, something which I broadly welcome and which allows a further opportunity to press again for a Four Villages Bypass. Last month, I wrote to the Lead Examiner for Sizewell C at the Planning Inspectorate requesting them to take into account the likely future route for

a Four Villages Bypass, which is something I have long supported. I'm pleased to have already helped to secure agreement from EDF for a bypass for the two villages of Stratford St Andrew and Farnham, but securing a full Four Villages Bypass remains important. The current proposals would make a future extension of the planned Two Villages Bypass to include Little Glemham and Marlesford much more challenging, and potentially miss a vital strategic opportunity to fully improve and upgrade our part of the A12. Residents of Marlesford and Little Glemham already experience heavy traffic volumes, particularly during the summer months, and the added pressure of Sizewell C traffic would make this worse. I believe it is shortsighted to consider any plan that would make a future Four Villages Bypass more difficult, so I have now also requested an urgent meeting with The Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP who is the Secretary of State for Energy to discuss this matter, and as well as other important issues connected with the building of Sizewell C. I also remain concerned that EDF are reluctant to consider supporting a much-needed pedestrian and cycle way from Marlesford to Wickham Market, as the existing path is unsafe for
use by pedestrians and unusable by wheelchair users or cyclists. I believe a new and extended path is urgently needed to improve the safety of vulnerable road users; given the worrying existing safety hazards will be further exacerbated directly by the cumulative effect of Sizewell C construction traffic. It is my view that funding for this path and cycle route should come from energy project developers and I shall be pursuing this matter with them directly. I have also written to Cllr Steve Gallant, Leader of East Suffolk District Council, strongly supporting Marlesford Parish Council's submission on this subject and requesting that the council also backs these proposals. I would like to thank the many people, including District and Parish Councillors, who work tirelessly to negotiate mitigation measures against the challenges that Sizewell C will undoubtedly bring. It is difficult to single out individuals, but I would like to thank your District Councillor, Carol Poulter for her work on your behalf in taking the case to EDF. In particular, Marlesford Parish Councillor Richard Cooper is owed a huge debt of gratitude for the tireless hard work and expertise that he brings to our communities in this matter and from which we all benefit.

Trustees and staff would like to thank the many donations we have received from individuals through Golden Giving, regular standing orders and cash and cheques in collection boxes and handed in at the Pear Tree Centre. Thank you to Derek Newby for a donation from the sale of his autobiography. We received donations raised in memory of Lorraine Hunt, Colin Shiers, and Sheila Whistlecraft. Thank you to their families and friends for supporting The Pear Tree Fund. We're grateful to other local organisations who have raised money for us over the last two months. A special thank you to Kevin and Kate and their staff at the Queen's Head, Bramfield, who have helped raised over £3k for us over the last two years, and continue to support by selling cards, hosting a collection box and holding a race night fundraiser in February. The Huntingford Arms raised £46 during a recent quiz night. Joy's Junk and Laxfield Market have continued to support us. Congratulations to Dot Booley, Ted and Jane Edwards, who won 2nd prize in December and January's 50:50 club draw and Bill Pagan for 3rd prize in January. The 50:50 club helps to raise funds for the charity and enables us to support more people that need our help. If you are interested in joining the 50:50 club, you can find out more information and register on our website.

The start of 2022 has been an exciting time at The Pear Tree Fund. We launched our 'Cooking for One' course for people who have been bereaved, led by Pear Tree Centre Manager, Seva Newrick, ably assisted by our wonderful volunteers. 'Peer Relief', our new fortnightly cancer support group, led by people with lived experience of cancer, began in late February. Responding to the needs of our local community, we are starting a 'Men's Wellbeing Group' on Monday afternoons to complement our 'Women's Wellbeing Group' that meets on Tuesday mornings at the Pear Tree Centre. Qi Gong on Monday mornings has become so popular we are looking at starting a second class. The Elders Wellbeing Programme, led by Kinda Education, in partnership with the Pear Tree, continues to grow and develop. The Elders recently relocated to the Pear Tree Centre, where we built a fire, enjoyed storytelling and singing and discussed the importance of Holocaust Remembrance Day. We recently took delivery of a Robopet (Freckles the Dog) on loan from East Suffolk Council. He has given much joy to visitors of the Pear Tree Centre, especially those living with dementia and people who are feeling distressed. We'd like to thank our fantastic volunteers, both at Dee's Den Charity Shop and the Pear Tree Centre, without whom we could not continue to support people with life-changing illnesses and long-term health conditions and their families. Dee's Den are planning another exciting fashion show in the summer with more details to follow. Visit the shop in Steeple End Halesworth to find hidden treasures and donate items
As spring approaches, Woodbridge Cruising Club members are looking forward to boats going back in the water and sailing again. Meanwhile, the winter social programme has a variety of activities, with the ever popular Wednesday suppers and Thursday walks a welcome break from inclement weather. The first 2022 walk was from Butley Oyster, along the Suffolk Coasts and Heath Paths, passing Butley Priory and returning across arable land. The subsequent walk was around Levington along the Orwell foreshore, through woods and fields and ending at the Ship Inn for a welcome drink and lunch, led by Commodore Stephen Lines. Walkers and dogs enjoyed this beautiful route, which is a perennial favourite. Forthcoming walks are from Shottisham, along the Deben Estuary and to Stone Point, led by John and Liz. Most walks end with a welcome pub lunch. The Sunday talks (arranged by Captain Peter King) are, as always, fascinating. January talks commenced with the East Anglian Sailing Trust by

Woodbridge Art Club pottery news note in your diary to visit the Art Club over Easter just to see what on earth has been going into the kiln. Of course, other pottery will be available to view and indeed purchase. Let's hope for some fine weather at Easter. Stop press: Andy Wright's industrial teapot that was chosen as the winner at the art club was recently picked as second best at an Anglian Potters meeting by none other than Keith Brymer Jones, a judge on TV's The Great Pottery Throw Down.
Woodbridge Flower Club Woodbridge Flower Club held their first meeting of the year where the demonstrator was Pat South from Felixstowe. Pat spoke about her various travels around the world and her arrangements depicted some of the countries she had visited. As always, the meeting ended with refreshments and a raffle and it was lovely to have time to talk to other members after such a long break. Our meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at Martlesham Community Hall starting at 2pm. New members are always welcome.

As I write this, The Great Pottery Throw Down is being shown on national TV. Some of you may not know that the art club has been running its own Potters Throw Down for the last five years and over the Easter bank holiday, the visitors to the Club's exhibition are invited to vote for what they consider is the best piece of work. This vote is absolutely free and you don't have to leave your name, address, email or inside leg measurement. Last year, the challenge was to make a teapot which, in fact, poses quite a few problems for the potters to solve, not least being to make sure it doesn't drip and the lid fitted properly. There were even some votes for the Club's ancient brown teapot, circa 1950, that had years of accumulated tea stains encrusted in the bottom. Some said that you didn't need to put any fresh tea in to make a brew! So this year, the potters have been given the task of making an abstract pot. I don't know what that conjures up in your mind, but just thinking about it has got my poor brain cell totally confused. For heavens sake, what is 'abstract'? If you're as intrigued as me, put a

Contact Anne Merrett for tickets and further details 01394 385572 or email: amerrett@farlingaye. suffolk.sch.uk We have continued with weekend opening throughout the winter months. Attendances have been variable, but on sunny days, we still have around fifty visitors which is very gratifying. The museum will open for the summer season on 2nd April. On Saturday 21st May, the long awaited Thomas Churchyard exhibition opens, and will run until 1st July, opening in the afternoons.

The Friends of Woodbridge Museum began their monthly talks again after the prolonged period of lockdown. Unfortunately, the first meeting of 2022 had to be cancelled but the February meeting took place on the 11th with a talk from John Prevett on repairing the power network after the 1987 October gale. The March meeting on Friday 11th March will be of particular local interest as Brian Knibbs will be bringing us up-to-date the on the progress of the various projects at the Long Shed and their hopes for the future. All talks are held at the Community Hall at 2:30pm. We also have the welcome return of the Museum Day School

As we reach the end of another tax year, a few last minute tips that might save you some tax before 5th April 2022. Dividend and Interest Allowance: Dividend allowance is £2,000 per person. Interest Allowance is £1,000 for basic rate taxpayers and £500 for those at 40%. If a married couple can transfer capital or stocks and shares, they can make best use of these allowances. Transfers of assets between spouses are exempt from tax but watch out for settlement legislation if the shares are of a private company. Take advice if unsure Annual Gift Exemption: Still unchanged at £3,000, per annum but you can carry unused allowance forward for one year (only) as well. A married couple making gifts could potentially gift £12,000 before 6 April and a further £6,000 days into the 2022/23 tax year if the allowances for 2020/21 are unused. This £18,000 gift could save your
beneficiaries £7,200 Inheritance Tax. The gifts do not have to be cash but watch for Capital Gains Tax if they aren't. Gift Aid - low income: Gift aid works by transferring income on which you have paid tax to your chosen charity. The charity (being exempt from tax) reclaims the basic rate income tax you have suffered. If you have not paid enough tax in the year, HMRC will chase you for the balance. The solution is to wait until after the end of the tax year to see how much tax you have suffered and then make a gift aid donation. Gift Aid can be set back one year to be treated as if paid in the preceding year. This way you can tailor your donations exactly. Gift Aid - high income: Gift Aid also saves higher rate tax too (as well as being able to preserve your allowances if you are over £100,000 gross taxable income). If your income fluctuates, you can use the same method of setting back donations to maximise
higher rate relief. Check with your accountant how to do this as there are rules. Capital Gains allowance: £12,300 for 2020/21. Can you make use of it before the end of the tax year? Specialist advice should be used if unsure. Hope these help Contact details: For further information, please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) via email: robin. beadle@ensors.co.uk" Disclaimer: Specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.
