If you struggle to get out and about but would like to do a bit of shopping for the autumn, please ring Karen on 875600. Our Community Car Service remains very busy, so if you cannot travel independently but need to get to an important medical, hospital or personal appointment, do give us a call as soon as you get your appointment and we'll help if we can. Just ring Helen or Kay on 874290, the Car Service is open for bookings Mondays to Fridays from 9am1pm. It's AGM time. Our AGM will take place by Zoom on Tuesday 19th October 2021 at 7pm. accommodating and enthusiastic and want to maintain this special relationship. On April 2nd 2022, Eitorf will be sending their flamboyant Marching Band to the Day of Dance event in Halesworth and this is a sight you really do not want to miss! There'll be return trips to France and Germany and transport is usually provided. It might help if you have a little French or German or least a willingness to try and other than that it's really open for all. So if this has piqued your interest, please get in touch through: clerk@halesworthtowncouncil. org.uk or 874517 and we'll pass on your interest to the Halesworth Twinning Society. Finally, as Covid is still a threat during the forthcoming colder months, the Council has agreed that it'd need to limit the number of members of the public in the Day Centre to ten for Council meetings. This is to allow a reasonable level of social distancing for the public. To offset this, the Council will be looking to improve the quality of the Zoom/conference facilities for those who are able to view the meetings online.

forms will be available from the Library and the Council offices. The Council would like to inform residents that the 'We Made That' town centre connectivity report is now available to view online using the link on our website. Alternatively, a hard copy of the document will be available to view at the Library and at the Council offices. The Council has since made a commitment to further research into the viability, costs, funding and timing of the suggested projects, in section seven of the WMT report. As many of you know, Halesworth has been twined with Eitorf in Germany and Bouchain in France since 1982. Back then, the three towns took a solemn undertaking to establish permanent exchanges between our towns. A separate group called Halesworth Twinning Society has worked tirelessly, to keep these connections going. However, the numbers are dwindling and the Society needs new members. So, we're taking this opportunity to ask if you'd like to get involved. Our friends in France and Germany are very

The Council has agreed to extra funding to help towards the costs of the festive lights this year and also agreed that a brass band will have permission to play in the park on Saturday the 27th November. It's been a difficult and troubling time for the Halesworth Events Management group who valiantly organise the Festive Lights event every year. The lack of fundraising opportunities during the lockdown periods and more recently (the increased costs related to complying with Suffolk County Council's latest safety and licensing requirements) meant that this year, the costs are much more than anticipated. The event will go ahead, the town will be joyfully lit and we hope everyone enjoys themselves. Following the extraordinary meeting of the Council when the planning applications for Campus and Castle Meadow Care were considered, the Council agreed that a survey would be conducted to gauge the opinion of the residents over the development of the former Middle School site. The Council felt this was necessary as it was very concerned that the latest proposals may not be reflecting the resident's aspirations for this site. The result of the survey will be presented to East Suffolk Council's Planning Committee and the link to the survey will be posted on the front page of the Council's website shortly and for those who prefer to use pen and paper, the survey

Have you ever wondered what Nordic walking is... or whether it's for you? Well, it's for almost everyone! Using the upper body to work muscles we don't often use, it works the heart, gently rotates the lower back, takes a third of the pressure off knees, hips, ankles and feet, and generally makes walking almost double its potential for fitness. Using over 90% of the bodies muscles, (swimming only uses 63%), you soon find that you're more supple in areas of the body that previously struggled. As we get older, our balance begins to go, Nordic walking can help with this, not just because the poles keep us upright! But because the technique helps align areas of the brain too. All in all, it's a total body workout, but out in the air, with good company and lovely countryside. To join a class, you need to be reasonably fit and able to walk
three or four miles with ease. The poles propel you along, so you'll find you walk faster than normal. Once your stride lengthens, the core of the body tightens, and the benefits of Nordic walking begin to take effect! Classes coming soon to Bungay. To find out more, email Maggie at magsnordic@gmail. com (or ring 07736 929773). I often can't answer the phone if I'm leading a walk, so email first if you can't get me on the phone. Poles are supplied during classes. I've been teaching Nordic walking for the past fourteen years and taught in many colleges
and holiday companies over the country, as well as locally in Suffolk. So if you're looking to learn something new, enjoy the outdoors, meet new people, and get a bit fitter at the same time, then get in contact and join the world of Nordic walking! Now that theatre doors are open again, we're looking forward to the return of our past members and very much hoping to attract new members to our amateur musical theatre group. If singing or dancing isn't your thing, there are numerous backstage roles required to support our productions. We'll very shortly be looking to cast our world premier April 2022 production, 'The Ballad of Robyn Hood'. This is a musical comedy about a theatre group who have hit upon hard times. With no money for license fees, they're forced to perform the terrible shows written and starring local bully Maureen Desmond whose latest show, 'Thatcher - the Musical' has just finished. The story goes that Aunt Christine once spent a bohemian summer in Paris in the sixties where she shared a garret with two young musicians, the 'soon to be famous' Andrew Laird Warbler and Tim Rhys. After a particularly bohemian party, the boys decide to head off to Buenos Aires where Tim has an idea about a new show. Their musical about Robyn Hood is abandoned but Christine brings it home with her where it stays undiscovered for many years. The show follows the story of the society's struggle to get the show to stage as Maureen (furious at having her next show overlooked) tries her best to sabotage it. Rehearsals are in Beccles and our performances are held in Beccles Public Hall. If you're interested in becoming involved, why not come along to the preview evening. This is being held Monday 1st November at 7:30pm in the Quaker Hall, Beccles where you'll find out

We've recently received funding thanks to East Suffolk Council and the East Suffolk Community Partnership funds to take people out to combat isolation and loneliness. This is an exciting opportunity for Suffolk residents in and around Lowestoft, Beccles and Bungay. Are you, or do you know anyone who is struggling to get out and socialise? Are you feeling anxious about leaving your home, or are you unsure of what groups or clubs are available? We'll provide one-off, free transport from your home address and take you where you'd like to go. Maybe you'd like to go to visit a friend or for a trip to your local garden centre. The month of September holds a special place for members of the RAF, both serving and veterans. On Saturday 18th September, the first 'Wings Appeal' collection for 2021 was held in Exchange Square. Many local families and visitors were calling at our marquee and we thank all those generous people whose contributions to our charity will make such a difference to those who help defend our nation. The following day (19th September) was 'Battle of Britain Sunday'. This saw the RAF Ensign flying proudly from the Beccles Church Tower. At 3pm, the parade and church service at St. Benet's Minster commenced with the entry of the standards for the church service and commemoration for those who made the supreme sacrifice in 1940. The service was hosted by Fr. Martin Gowman OSB MA ARCO and also included Canon Ron Tuck, Norfolk and Suffolk Wing

The Halesworth Neighbourhood Plan is coming Planning for the future Aspirational, practical and evidenced: Protecting what's good about Halesworth. Our Plan is nearly ready, but we need to know what you think about our ideas and our recommendations.
The Neighbourhood Plan Weekender
The next steps
6/7th November at St Mary's Church, Halesworth Our Weekender is your chance to find out more about the plan and talk with the people who have brought it all together. Enjoy a special exhibition, focusing on the seven big policy areas based on our vision and objectives and showing how we can make these real. Take part in workshops to learn some of our exciting proposals and hear how we came to our conclusions. Join us for a special Q and A and if
you cannot turn up in person, you can join us by Zoom. The event will be live-streamed so you can download it later too. Delicious cakes, biscuits will be available to all. For more information about the weekender, just go to the Town Council website: www. halesworthtowncouncil.org.uk. Just click on the Neighbourhood Plan icon to find out more.

Our vision Halesworth will thrive because everything that we value today remains but we'll create a greener, more resilient and sustainable community for the future.

Hard copies will be available for you to look at from Halesworth Town Council and Halesworth Library.

Halesworth War Memorial I recently led guided walks for Halesworth Heritage open days. I included Halesworth War Memorial garden. I showed each group pictures of the site from the 19th Century to 1960. One postcard was particularly interesting, it shows many floral tributes around the base of the memorial. The card was posted 4th April, 1921 addressed to Miss A Muttitt at Hemsby Hall, Norfolk: "Dear Annie, I've sent you a pic of our War Memorial. You can just see our boys names on as it's taken four different ways so I thought you would like one with fondest love Amy." Two sisters and their two brothers. Halesworth's War Memorial is at the southern end of The Thoroughfare. In 1899, Crescent House, a chemist shop and a house burned to the ground. This revealed a new and impressive view of the church from the town, and residents wanted to keep it. A meeting of parishioners was called at the Town Hall to consider purchasing the Crescent House site and some
adjoining land. The meeting was chaired by the Reverend Upcher and nearly £300 was donated. A committee of fifteen was formed to gather subscriptions. The site was purchased by the parish council and an Open Space Committee formed. Reports to the Parish Council Mr Algar of Diss prepared a plan for a Public Pleasure Ground and Messrs S Howard laid the drains, a local gardener undertook the work with advice from Robert Crompton Notcutt. Plants and shrubs were purchased, but grass was considered too expensive to maintain so gravel with a central flower bed and shrubs was agreed. 13th December, 1920: The War Memorial Committee was given permission to erect a memorial to those fallen in the Great War, and the German gun standing there was removed by Mr Mills to Mr Rodwell's garden. The War Memorial was put in the small public Pleasure Ground by local stone mason Frederick Barber and Mr Button supplied the turf free. The memorial was unveiled and dedicated on Sunday
March 6th, 1921 at 3pm. There then followed Reveille, the National Anthem and wreaths were laid on the memorial. Halesworth war memorial is 15ft high (4.5720 metres), and 11ft (3.3528 metres) square at the base, 2ft 9ins (.8382 metres), steps all in a 3ft (.9144 metres) thick concrete foundation. It's an Aberdeen granite obelisk on a three stepped pediment on a three stepped base. The three steps are common for grave stones as it represents the Trinity.
Halesworth community bus news What an interesting month it's been for the Halesworth Hoppa! First of all, the weather was kind, which means we had lots of community hires, visiting some fabulous destinations. Our volunteers drove out to Cromer, Mannington Hall Gardens, Felixstowe, Ipswich Waterfront and Norwich, to mention just a few! Please check out our website for details of how to hire the Hoppa for community events and outings. Then later in the month, we faced the fuel shortage. And the Hoppa just kept on running as normal. A massive thank you is due to Louise at Hammonds,
who made sure we got the fuel we needed to provide our essential community service. Finally, a fond farewell to Mike Jackson and Michael Hunt who are retiring from driving the Hoppa. We thank them for their years of service to Halesworth Area Community Transport, and wish them well in their next endeavours. Everyone here will miss them very much. Remember, we're always looking for new drivers and Bus Buddies. If you have a few hours a week to spare, we'd love to welcome you into our friendly team. To find out more, please call the office on 01986 875900.

Danny Mitchell Danny Mitchell ran a halfmarathon in Chelmsford, with all the sponsorship money going to HDCF. Many of us had the privilege of meeting him at our stall in the Thoroughfare, where he got £250 from local sponsors. Very well done Danny, and thank you. At the time of writing, I don't know how much these wonderful people raised in total, but we're so grateful, and will let you know next month. Finally, may I remind you that our next film at The Cut in November will be Downton Abbey. It'll be shown at 2pm on Wednesday 15th, with doors opening at 1:45pm.

and a further £90.70 from a collection, making a great total of £264.70. Our grateful thanks to all concerned. Karen Prime from Edwards Restaurant and Theresa Utting On Sunday 3rd October, these two ladies ran a virtual full-length London marathon. A magnificent achievement, especially as they did it in record time. Half their sponsorship is for HDCF and the other half for Dementia UK. Karen and Kevin from Edwards also donated all the money from the afternoon teas sold that day to the charities. We offer our gratitude to Karen and Theresa, their support team, and all who sponsored them.

We would just like to thank everyone for the cards of condolence, messages and donations following the sad passing of Betty. She is greatly missed. Chris and Mandy, Daniel and Jayne and families.
Since HDCF began in 2014, it's provided over 14,000 hours of respite care at a cost of nearly £250,000. The Fund is able to do this because of the incredible fundraising and generosity of local people. While we do get some money from grants, we just couldn't do our work without this unbelievable support. We're grateful to all who donate, leave bequests in wills, and support our fundraising efforts. This month, we particularly salute the efforts of these wonderful people. The White Swan Darts Team and customers After working at Pearce & They held a match night and Kemp Ltd for fourty-seven years, I'd like to thank everyone donated £174.00 from the raffle, for their good wishes they have sent me following my retirement. Sincere thanks goes to all the fantastic people I've worked with over those years. Also all the wonderful customers who I can now call friends. To remembering Dad and Winston first starting up with a small store in Halesworth Press Yard, to having the shop in town for many years and then moving up to the business park. Happy memories throughout my working life. They will always have a special place in my heart. Chris Pearce to celebrate our 25th anniversary. team who won the RBL's Fours competition held at Greenford in 1977 and 1978. His love of his family, his joy in life and the everyday things, his commitment to doing a job well with his smile, must make you all feel proud to have known him. In her address, the Revd Jane emphasised the characteristics of love, patience, kindness and selfeffacing which she said described Dick. He was loved by us all in our own way, but God's promise of eternal love and eternal life means that he's still with us. The Commendation, Dismissal and Blessing took place in the Church and Music for Exit was 'You'll Never Walk Alone' by Andre Rieu. Family mourners were: His wife Jill, Mr and Mrs Dale and Rachael Clarke (son), Cameron and Crispin Clarke (grandsons) and Jade Campbell, Mr and Mrs Peter Watling, Mr David Watling, Mr Andy Watling and Tanea (brothers-in-law), Stephen Watling, Me Clint and Emma Watling, Joe Watling and Shauna, Simon French and Sandra, Matthew French, Karl French (nephews), Mrs Julie Hinsley, Mrs Tracey Saunders, Mrs Pam Driver, Mrs Linda Brinded (nieces), Mr E Baldwin (cousin), David and Melanie Driver, Mrs Claire Chenery and Miss Donna Brinded. sadly, his mother died when he was nine years old and he was raised by his father and siblings, Jack, George, Bett and Eve. He met Jill Watling at a dance in the Rifle Hall when he was eighteen and they were married when he was nineteen and soon after they settled in Kennedy Avenue, Halesworth where their son Dale was born who later presented him with two grandchildren Cameron and Crispin who were his pride and joy. His love for his family was paramount and he was devastated when sister Bett left to go back to the USA with her American husband who was stationed at Lakenheath. Dick worked hard and was employed in the building trade and worked on the construction of Halesworth Police Station. He was later engaged by Howard Rotavators and in 1982 he joined Royal Mail and became a popular Postie, especially on the country rounds, where he stayed until retirement. His life was lived to the full, his passionate approach to sport and abilities as an allround sportsman produced many memorable incidents. He played football for Halesworth Town when they reached the final of the Suffolk Junior Cup and he had trials with Ipswich Town as a goalkeeper. One year, when playing for Wenhaston Football Club, out of the 115 goals scored Dick and Vic Reeves scored all but one of them. With Terry Driver, he revived Halesworth Cricket Club in the 1980's bringing the oldies and youngsters together to keep the game going. He joined his brothers and became a member of Halesworth White Swan's very successful darts club who were playing in the Lowestoft Fishermen's Widows and Orphans Darts League and attendant competitions. At National level, he was a member of Halesworth's branch of The Royal British Legion's

A large number of sportsmen, former colleagues, friends and associates joined his family in St. Mary's Church, Halesworth on October 4th 2021 for a celebration for the life of Richard Charles Clarke who died suddenly on 5th September at James Paget Hospital. Music for entry was 'Wind Beneath my Wings' by Bette Midler. The service was conducted by the Revd Jane Held who welcomed the congregation and gave the collect and a Bible reading from 1 Corinthians 13: 4-13. The first poem (Sportsmen in Paradise) was read by daughter-in-law Rachael and great-niece Claire read the Second Poem 'Remember With Love'. A tribute 'Memories of a Bowling Man' was given by Mr Chris Peck, Wenhaston Club's captain of the Lowestoft league side who said that Dick was a sportsman and over the years he'd been heavily involved with football, darts, cricket and bowls. He was very competitive and in every sport he played he took part to win. He'd been a member of the Wenhaston Bowls Club for over twenty years and had been prominent in his own and the Club's successes, the latest being on 7th August this year when with Club Secretary Jake Moyes and John Robinson they won the Wenhaston 3-wood triples open tournament. Dick was delighted to see his name on the winners' Shield. The Club won the Lowestoft League again this year and Mr Peck concluded by saying that everyone at Wenhaston Bowls Club dedicated this year's Trophy to Dick who was loved and respected by the members. Music for Reflection was 'There You'll Be' by Faith Hill. 'Dick's Story' was given for the family by the Revd Jane who said that Dick was born on 22nd February 1945, the 5th child of Mr and Mrs Frederick Clarke at their home in Mount Pleasant, Halesworth. Halesworth Royal British Legion and Remembrance Day
2nd Halesworth Brownie pack Our first evening back was a beautiful early September evening. We all enjoyed being together once again with a picnic in the park followed by a scavenger hunt. We were delighted that some of the girls who are leaving us to go on to Guides were able to join us. We've welcomed Ruby already this term - We hope you enjoy your time with us at Brownies! Over the next few weeks, we'll be welcoming some more new members. Our first week back in the United Reformed Church we were busy creating a display for the 'Edible England' flower festival in St Mary's Church. The girls were chuffed to come in second place.
Thanks to everyone who popped into the church and voted! Last week, we were busy colouring, cutting and sticking to make a harvest frieze, giving thanks for "all good gifts around us". We were sad to say farewell to Katie last week, who's heading off to university. We wish you all the best with your studies Katie and hope to see you occasionally when you get some holiday. Halesworth WI report We welcomed several visitors and new members to join us at our last meeting at the Rifle Hall when Jackie Richardson gave a very interesting talk on "My Family of Tortoises". Jackie brought along three tortoises for us to admire, including a tiny one, only four days old. We learnt about their habits, what to feed them on and the efforts that went to ensure they were kept safe and hibernated successfully in winter. We're looking forward to a
The Halesworth Royal British Legion held its meeting in September, the first since February, 2020. It was good to get back together once more and see some old faces and also to welcome three new members, Dorinda Sexton, Colin White and John Barber. Our meeting in November will be on the 16th at 7pm in the Stables which is located at the rear of the Angel Inn in Halesworth. So if you want to become a Legion member, please feel free to attend, male or female, you don't have to be ex-forces to join. This years' Remembrance Service in Halesworth will be held on November 14th in St. Mary's Church at 3pm followed
county event held at the High Lodge, Darsham where the speaker will be Lady Tollemache who has been a Chelsea Flower Show designer, visiting Spexhall and Wissett WI for a talk on Pantomime dames and an outing to play ten-pin bowling games in Lowestoft. Our next meeting will be Norma Howell telling us about medical detection dogs. We meet on the third Thursday of the month at 2pm at the Rifle Hall, new members welcome.
By the time you read this, we'll have had our first meeting at The Pear Tree Centre for more than nineteen months. As well as being introduced to the new Parkinson's nurse, I'm sure there will be a lot of catching up to do! We'd like to say a very big thank you to the residents and neighbours of Barley Meadow for their generosity and support. They raised an incredible £350 from a coffee morning, held in September, to raise funds to support those with Parkinson's disease in our community. Monies raised will help us to continue with that support. For the past few weeks, several of our members have been joining
Helen Hayes at Holton Village Hall to 'Sing to beat Parkinson's'. Great fun and very beneficial. The next session will be on Wednesday 20th October at 2pm. Our November meeting will be at The Pear Tree Centre on Wednesday November 10th at 10am when Annette Dunning will be joining us to talk about Warm Homes. If you have Parkinson's, or care for someone who does, do contact us for more information. We're here to support you with information, friendship and understanding and some laughs along the way! An update from Halesworth Campus "The sooner the better. Don't forget the pool!" "At last, a positive development for sports!" "We support the new structure of a sports complex for future generations." These were some of the enthusiastic comments left by visitors to Halesworth Campus's public exhibition at the Rifle Hall on September 18th. With planning applications for the sports facilities and the care home complex awaiting decision from East Suffolk Council, it was time to show the people of Halesworth what they could expect to see delivered over the next couple of years. More than fifty residents came to see the plans, and to hear the details as explained by Campus trustees. Visitors were also able to talk to Sanjay Kaushal of Castlemeadow Care and to Sherry Storer (Head of the newly reopened Skills Centre) who offered information about vocational courses offering young people qualifications and the potential for employment across the Campus site. Maureen Took and the W.I. sustained exhibitors and visitors with delicious complimentary cakes and hot drinks. It's been a long road getting to this first planning application submission, yet the content has changed very little since the project was first conceived. Adaptation has been key! The current application for the outdoor floodlit grass and allweather pitches, is the first of three eventual applications. Campus trustees are keen to explain that although the first application might appear somewhat limited in scope, the next two applications will include the plans for the rest of the facilities, as presented
over the years. A decision on the first application is expected imminently. Meanwhile, Halesworth Campus is delighted to hear that £1.6 million of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) has been earmarked for our first phase, meaning we can start very soon on construction of these two pitches which are so desperately needed in this area. Next, in advanced preparation, is the application for the sports complex, including fifty-station gym, changing facilities, studios for a wide range of classes, a café and all the exterior landscaping including playgrounds and performance space, a trim trail and alfresco seating. All this is complementary to what is on offer at Halesworth Community Sports and Leisure, our sister organisation next door. They'll continue to offer tennis, bowls, martial arts, and football through the clubs on their site. What unites everybody in Halesworth is the desire for a swimming pool, and Campus is determined to do everything possible to deliver one as part of a third planning application which will also include a three-court multi-sports hall and hard courts for tennis and netball. Some more funding has to be found but we're working closely with professional funding advisors already. And where there's a will, there's a way! A concern among residents is the future of the cherished Apollo Youth Club, which has been on the Campus site for over fifty
years, but is now feeling its age. The current building will have to come down once construction starts, but a group is forming within the town to explore the future of youth provision in Halesworth. If funding for a new building can be found, there's space on the Campus site for it. Halesworth Town Council is leading the initiative and Campus is keen to support. Another worry that's been raised on the planning portal concerns microplastics and the 3G pitch. Halesworth Campus would like to offer residents reassurance that the management and maintenance process that will be implemented are best practice as set out by national sporting bodies and that the pitch is similar to others in regular use locally. The quality of this type of playing surface has improved year on year and we'll have the most up-to-date version, providing one of the best playing surfaces in the area. As and when the legislation changes, and alternatives to rubber crumb are available, these will be used as replacement. Thank you to everybody that took the time to visit us at the Rifle Hall. We appreciated the opportunity to display our plans. We'll be publishing more news about the planning decision as we have it. Watch this space!
Harry made the brave decision to take on The Wissett Plough in September, 2020. Despite the lockdowns, he and his team have succeeded in building a good business and even won a Trip advisor award (‘The Travellers Choice’). The business prides itself in using local suppliers as much as possible and preparing fresh food to order. Breakfast is now being served on a Saturday and Sunday morning and a sandwich menu is available at lunchtime together with a variety of meals. The Christmas menu is available throughout December together with daily specials. We can cater for parties up to 30 and pre-orders must be given. Menus can be varied for dietary requirements but please call to discuss. The Wissett Plough is an easy drive from Halesworth and less than 2 miles. It’s located on the street as you drive through the village. The car park is located at the rear of the pub and there’s additional parking in the village car park.

Poetry book written by Worlingham resident raises funds for UNICEF I've been a resident of Worlingham for over thirty years and was the leader of the Beccles Library Poetry Group for ten years. During the three periods of lockdown, I (like many others) was shielding. So to pass the time away, I began writing little poems recording my thoughts and observations. Some of these were published in a magazine and I thought it'd be a good idea to collect them together in a little book of poems. At the same time, the news was full of the plight of children and families who were suffering or displaced due to the war in Afghanistan and drought in various other parts of the world, so I thought I could help
by selling this little book and donating any profits to UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund). The book is now on sale at

Alde and Blyth Community Radio Matt Bowles is one of ABC Radio's familiar voices every weekend. Here, he tells us all about his programme and why he got involved with Alde and Blyth Community Radio. "I've always been interested in radio and apart from a couple of sessions at a hospital radio with a couple of mates, I've never done anything about it. That was, until I saw a post on Facebook seeking people who were interested in joining the Alde and Blyth Community Radio team, so I jumped at it! I warned Wayne Burns that I'm very much an old dog and new tricks don't come easy, to which he replied "it's just like driving a car" but in reality, it's like flying a helicopter whilst trying to keep your instructor amused! Building the show was fun, but challenging and I don't know if I could have done it all without some wise experienced words from Wayne and Jo Baker (my co-host). She's been brilliant and helps out a lot with the content and she's great to bounce off - on and off air. We're now nearly three months in on ABC The Full English Breakfast (8am-10am on a Saturday morning in case you didn't know) and our confidence has really grown. We try and keep it humorous and light hearted and hope it's a nice way to ease in to the weekend. Live radio is such a buzz, whether you've got one listener or a million of them, and talking of listeners, ours are fantastic with their contributions and it's great to read their comments every week." If you want to get in touch with us anytime, then visit: www. abcradio.co.uk or our Facebook page 'Abcradio Thefullenglish' and send a friend request so you won't miss a thing. Matt presents 'The Full English Breakfast' every Saturday morning between 8am-10am and can be heard at: www.abcradio. co.uk and via Amazon Alexa.

On Monday 27th September, the bells rang out at noon and flags flew from the Bell Tower and Town Hall to celebrate the 350th anniversary of Charles II being in Beccles in 1671. After the ringing the Collector of the Feoffees, Mark Jermey, presented Kate Gill, the Tower
Captain, with a cheque in appreciation of the ringers' service on the day and over the centuries. The Feoffees who manage the Townlands Trust have a long tradition of supporting the ringing that took place to mark special events, as they did when the King visited. They gave the ringers ten shillings and often also rewarded them with a generous supply of beer. The Tower Captain was delighted that the cheque, which will help with ongoing repairs to keep the bells ringing, represented more than three and a half
centuries of inflation. On 30th September as part of the celebrations, local historian Barry Darch gave a well-attended talk at Beccles Library on 'Beccles and Royalty'. The library was delighted that the talk signalled the restarting of its Top Time programme. Cake was enjoyed, courtesy of Tesco. The 'Drabble' writing competition for adults attracted a good range of imaginative entries describing Charles's visit - and the winner was Karen Morral who will receive the prize donated by Peggy Macgregor.

the process! Add in some new contemporary door handles or worktop and a fresh new look is achieved at a fraction of the hassle and cost of replacing a kitchen. When it comes to picking a paint colour, the possibilities are endless. From cool relaxing greens to vibrant glowing reds, there's a wealth of choice across all the popular paint ranges Farrow and Ball, Dulux, Crown, Keim and Little Greene - and hundreds of RAL and British Standard shades in matt, gloss or satin finishes. Often customers already have a colour mind in their own home and EASC can match this. East Anglian Spray Company Ltd is open 8am-4pm Monday to Fridays and 9am-1pm Saturdays. Head to our website: www.eastanglianspray.co.uk and take a look on Facebook or Instagram for more information on what EASC has to offer. Ian, Justin and the spray team are available to provide free advice and estimates for any spray painting enquiries you may have, so please get in touch by telephone 01976 899729 or by email at: easpraycoltd@gmail.com.

includes new window frames and doors, kitchens, staircases, balustrades, skirtings and fitted furniture including cupboards, wardrobes, bookcases and media units, all of which can be finished in an infinite array of colours to suit all tastes. In addition, EASC's spray painting service can breath new life into much-loved household and garden furniture pieces that are in need of an update, such as tables, chairs, wardrobes, chests of drawers, office furniture, benches and seats. A colour change can transform the feel of any room but perhaps none more dramatically than in the heart of a home, the kitchen. A good quality kitchen is capable of a lifetime of service but if the finish is looking tired or dated, spray painting is a really smart choice. EASC offers a complete kitchen update service - uplifting all door and drawer fronts from your home to the booth for spray painting, then returning to re-fit the finished fronts. Job done. What's more, if a customer is happy with the current colour of the kitchen carcasses, then cupboard contents can remain in-situ throughout

Halesworth & Southwold Community News - November 2021 - 19
An update from The Pear Tree Fund It's been a busy couple of months at the Pear Tree Fund with lots of exciting developments. Almost fifty people attended our AGM and heard about the challenges of supporting people through Covid and our plans for the near future. We're opening a new office in Halesworth Town Centre, in the Thoroughfare, behind the Ipswich Building Society, sharing the space with other local charities. Local carers of people with life-changing and long-term health conditions, have been benefiting from a series of Art Therapy courses being held at the Pear Tree Centre funded by the Suffolk Carers Fund. Places are still available for the January course. We held a Macmillan Cancer Support Coffee Morning to raise funds in support of those
affected by cancer. Through our partnership with Kinda Forest School in Holton, over a dozen people accessing support from us have joined the Elders Intergenerational Project, a structured activity programme promoting positive wellbeing through connection to nature. We held our second tea party for service users and volunteers from Halesworth Volunteer Centre with over thirty attending. The Rural Coffee Caravan and Connected Communities Project (Vincent 'Van-Go' social prescribing van) have been regularly visiting the Pear Tree Centre, offering complementary support, including information about local services, activities and support, demonstrations of assistive technology and support for older people who are lonely
and socially isolated. The Rural Coffee Caravan will be with us on Thursday 28th October and 25th November from 10am-12 noon. Connected Communities will visit on Wednesday 3rd November and 1st December. The Pear Tree Centre is open from 9am-4pm, Monday to Friday. We provide information, advice and holistic support to anyone with a life-changing or long-term condition living in East Suffolk, neighbouring parts of mid-Suffolk and Suffolk, and families and carers. We also offer bereavement support. People can drop-in or make an appointment to see us and support can be provided at the Pear Tree Centre or by telephone or online. We're grateful for the continuing support received from the local community. Over
Win Christmas raffle, with Friends of Edgar Sewter Primary School Edgar Sewter Parents and Teachers Association (Friends of Edgar Sewter) have been in full swing this autumn half-term, raising funds for the school and its pupils. The PTA have held an after-school tuck shop, a spooky Halloween school disco and the Ancient House Bistro is kindly holding a charity quiz night for us. We're hoping to raise enough money to purchase additional Chromebooks for the school so that every pupil has access to one in class. We'd also like
to give the children a muchdeserved Christmas treat. Our next exciting fundraiser is a raffle to 'Win Christmas' and we're reaching out to the fantastic businesses of Halesworth to offer their support with raffle prizes. We've already had a very generous donation of a turkey from Allens Butchers - thank you! Please look out for our friendly faces as we'll be out and about in November selling raffle tickets in the Thoroughfare, Halesworth. We also want to say a huge
thank you to all the parents and carers at the school who have been very generous in supporting our events, so far this year. If you'd like to get in touch with the PTA or make a donation for the raffle, please email: pta@edgarsewter primary.co.uk
the last three months, we've received many donations from individuals, local community groups and organisations. We'd like to thank: P Bones, Mr and Mrs Cunningham, A Langford, Rachel Booth, D Penman, C Lloyd, Mrs S McDonald, J Clarke, F Philips, Veronica Downing, David Watts, Sharon Tuthill, Mel Edwards, Terry Edwards, Nick Harvey, David Watts, Susan Shires, Ted and Jane Edwards, Michael Hunt, J Edward and J Smith for their generous donations to our charity. We also received donations in memory of: Sheena Farrow, Shelia Whistlecraft and from Derek Small in memory of his wife. Thank you to their family and friends for supporting The Pear Tree Fund. We received a legacy from the estate of Jennifer Hines of Halesworth. July's 50:50 winners were: Mr Witherby (1st), Mr Ray Roy (2nd) and Mr Michael Sharpley (3rd). August: Oliver Richardson (1st), Megan Kell (2nd) and Jacqueline Thrower (3rd). September: Elisabeth Robertson (1st) and Mr Witherby (3rd). The 50:50 club helps to raise funds for the charity and enables us to support more people that need our help. If you're interested in joining the 50:50 club, you can find out more information and register on our website: peartreefund.org.
Wenhaston Flower Club is back! While Jean still keeps a watchful eye over her girls, Jackie has stepped forward and taken on the day-to-day tasks of organising our meetings. We've had to move to a new venue and we will now meet in Wenhaston Village Hall. We've kept to the same day and time. The first Tuesday in the month at 7:30pm. The club is keeping to the same format of an informal, friendly group. We don't have a committee or an annual membership fee. Everyone just pays £5 on the night when they arrive. We always have a raffle when it's a demonstration or a workshop. The prizes are the flower arrangements that the demonstrator has made on the night or if it's a workshop, we ask you for a small item for the raffle. The money raised helps towards the cost of paying for the demonstrators. We always serve tea, coffee
and biscuits. We're a very sociable group as our yearly calendar reflects. Our year usually starts in September (but this year, we start in November): September: Demonstration October: Charity night (a fayre with stalls etc. This is usually for Cancer Research) November: Workshop with a Christmas theme December: Our little Christmas party in the hall January: No meeting February: Our Christmas meal at a pub March, April, May and June: Demonstrations or workshops July: A cream tea or get together in someone's garden etc. August: No meeting Our November meeting on Tuesday 2nd will be a workshop with Roger making a Christmas Swag. Everyone is welcome. If you've never been before, the evenings are great fun and you
really don't have to be a great flower arranger. Some of the regulars can help out with items like stub wires and oasis tape. Items required for the swag: Metal coat hanger, pliers, 1/3 of a block of Oasis, tin foil or cling film, Oasis tape, scissors, mixed evergreen woody stemmed foliage, Conifer, Holly, Box, Spruce etc, six large Ivy leaves, five baubles, ten cones, ribbon, stub wires and towel. The December meeting on Tuesday 7th is our Christmas party in the Village Hall. We all bring a plate of finger food to share for the buffet table either sweet or savoury. A little gift for the Secret Santa sack and we have someone to provide the entertainment for the evening. We're looking forward to seeing all the familiar faces again and hopefully a lot of new ones! For more information, please contact Jackie on 01502 478401.

A CHRISTMAS TREE GROWERS LAMENT I am sure I shall never see, So vile a thing as a plastic tree. It has no charm, it has no grace, It is an utter waste of space. It has no character, I fear It is a carbon copy every year. So awful, I’m sure you’ve cussed it Until the day you gladly bust it. No environmental need it serves, depleting the earth of oil reserves. It never grows naturally on farms, No birds have rested in its arms. From its factory, pollution passes Real trees use up greenhouse gasses. And when at last it’s had its day, It is still a pain to throw away. You can’t recycle it, nor chip it, But can only bin and tip it. And yet on top of all this racket, It even costs a tidy packet.
.
So this advice, I give for free, GET YOURSELF A REAL TREE!

National Trust Dunwich Autumn is very much here and making its presence known, with several misty mornings and the leaves all shades of red, brown, orange and yellow. The stags have been bellowing eerily and our winter migrant species have been popping up to show everyone that despite the colder weather there is still plenty of wildlife to see! One particular highlight from last year was a small herd of deer leaping across
the path in front of one of our staff members as they were walking around the heath. We hope to see them again this year. But until then, sit back and marvel at the above image of a stag from the group caught on camera midleap. I'm sure you can agree, it's quite the sight! In other news, our ranger Lloyd is just about to make a start on the yearly heather scraping (an essential conservation task which
removes patches of dead heather and vegetation) exposing the dormant seeds to light and rain. This rejuvenates the patches and ensures the entire heath does not age at the same rate and therefore die off in one go. Look out for Lloyd chugging along in the tractor, and maybe make a note of where the patches are, so that in the spring, you can come back and see the first shoots pushing through the soil.

News from Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats Protection November 2021
Local musical theatre groups unite to return to the stage After months of not being able to do what they love best, the award-winning youth musical theatre group Rising Stars have teamed up with their sister group WLOG to create a show celebrating the reopening of theatres and live performances. The result is 'Curtain Up' which will be staged nightly at 7:30pm from Wednesday 20th to Saturday 23rd October at Beccles Public Hall and Theatre. Helen Steed (Chair of Rising Stars) explained how difficult the past eighteen months have been for the Beccles-based group. "Our production of 'Spamalot' was cancelled just before opening night in March 2020 when theatres closed and the first lockdown started. It was huge blow to us, both financially and emotionally, as performing together formed a large part of our wellbeing and social lives. When we were finally allowed to meet up again to restart rehearsals, we were determined to perform something uplifting and upbeat to help raise everyone's spirits. Sharing the stage with
WLOG has been a fantastic experience. Combining our talents and experience has packed 'Curtain Up' with songs and dances from our favourite musicals, including Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors, Starlight Express, Newsies, Thoroughly Modern Millie and All Shook Up. We're so looking forward to welcoming audiences back to the theatre and seeing them leave with smiles on their faces." As well as putting the final touches to 'Curtain Up', Rising Stars have announced that their March 2022 production will be the fun-filled musical 'Legally Blonde'. Open auditions will be held in early November 2021 and talented performers aged 12-19 are invited to apply. Visit their website for more details and to book an audition slot. Tickets for 'Curtain Up' are £10 for adults and £8 for under 18s and can be purchased from the Beccles Public Hall Box Office in person, by phoning 01502 770060 or online. More information from Rising Stars' website: www.WLOGRisingStars.co.uk

Saxmundham Museum 'Our Story of Saxmundham', a newly published book, describes how the East Suffolk town has grown over the centuries, from its earliest beginnings as a small Saxon settlement, to its emergence as a thriving market town and its continued development as an important East Suffolk hub. A collaborative project from long time Saxmundham residents Richard and Viv Wills Crisp and Kevin and Jane Gale, the book contains fascinating historical photographs and insightful stories and anecdotes. It's truly a fascinating read for all ages. Saxmundham Museum is hosting a morning to launch
the publication of this exciting new book on Saturday 23rd October from 10am-1pm. It'll be an opportunity for everyone to meet the people behind the book, which will be essential reading for anyone with Saxmundham connections.

instances of the September maximum exceeding the August maximum in the same year. 2013 (30.1C, the only September day to record more than 30C), 2006, 1985 and 1978. Night time minimum temperatures generally also held up quite well and overachieved by 2C against long-term average, just 5 nights fell below 10C, including the last 4. Last September was the 5th wettest on my record (4.87"). This time, the 0.80" total made this the 8th driest and least amount for the month since 2009. There were only 4 rain days (2 very minimal) during the first 26 as high pressure had dominated our weather pattern. However, active fronts from the Atlantic eventually broke through and rain was noted on the remaining 4 days (2 with light showers) but included the wettest day of the month (0.40" on 28th) which was responsible for half of the month's total. The 1st, 2nd and the early hours of 5th (credited to 4th) October felt the full effects from the change in conditions, those days combined to record nearly one and three quarters inches of rainfall. Most of us would've noticed Saturday afternoon of 2nd October was particularly Autumnal, with very strong south-easterly winds and a period of moderate rainfall. With three quarters of 2021 completed, 17.86" of rainfall has been recorded so far, well on course to achieve longterm average (25.60" being the year's average). Especially with the months of October, November and December to come, traditionally the 3 wettest on average. There shouldn't be any possible worries about water restrictions in 2022 due to poor rainfall totals. These have been well addressed so far this year despite drier than average months such as this reported on.

September overall was very dry with somewhat aboveaverage temperatures. The mean temperature overall was at 2C above the long-term average and was the warmest for the month since 2016 and the third warmest on my entire 54 year record. The figures would've been even more impressive, but for the 2 coolest days by some distance on the 29th and 30th recording maximum temperatures of 15.1C and 16.5C respectively. The 17.2C mean temperature exceeded the previous month (August) figure of 16.9C making this only the 2nd instance of September warmer than August in the same year. The previous example was 2006, September mean (18.2C), while August's mean was just 17.0C. 21 days during the month recorded 20C or better. In fact, the highest being the 2 warmest September days (28.3C on 7th and 27.3C on 9th) since 2013 were both in excess of August's high (26.3C). There have only been 4 previous

We hope to see many of our supporters (old and new) at our Christmas Fair in the Reydon Village Hall, Lowestoft Road, Southwold on November 13th, 2021. In a year when we've had restricted fundraising opportunities, we're greatly looking forward to catching up with everyone. Do come along to find Christmas gifts for your friends, family and for your feline companions. Christmas cards, calendars, diaries, raffle, tombola and lots more will be on offer! You'll also be able to have a snack and chat over a cup of tea or coffee too. Cat care: Make sure your cat is safe outside in the cold • Cats may still want to brave even the coldest temperatures. If your cat has access to the outdoors, provide them with a shelter to ensure they're safe. A sturdy cardboard box covered in plastic sheeting is ideal. • If you have a cat flap, make sure your cat can get in and out. Heavy snowfall or ice might result in the cat flap becoming stuck, or blocked. • Ensure that your cat has plenty of fresh water indoors, in case any outside sources freeze. • Always make sure your cat comes inside at night, locking the catflap once they're in. Provide them with warm, comfortable, safe places to sleep and a litter tray. • Regularly check sheds, outhouses and garages to ensure your cat isn't locked inside. Look before you lock! • If your cat has come in from the snow, wipe off any road grit, salt, or anything that might stick to their paws and fur. • Screen-off open fireplaces and always supervise your cat if you have lit a fire. • Make sure your cat is microchipped, and the details are

"Remember then: Memories of 1946-1969 and how to record your own" - a talk by Dr Janet Few Monday 15th November at 7:30pm on Zoom. Recalling life in Britain during the pivotal period between 1946 and 1969, Dr Janet Few describes the results of a project during which eighty women recorded their memories of a time when we moved from liberty bodices to mini skirts and from ration books to ready meals. We saw the emergence of youth culture, the comprehensive education system, conspicuous consumerism and feminism. Join us on Zoom to either reminisce or discover what life was like at the time. This talk is much more than just a collection of memories. The techniques described will help both men and women, of all ages, to start writing reminiscences of their own. An experienced family, social and community historian, Janet is now in her fourth decade
of family and local history research, and lectures regularly on these subjects. A qualified family historian, Janet has been involved in family history at a national level. She was Education Liaison Officer for the Federation of Family History Societies for several years, and has acted as the local agent for several national research companies, and has worked with the 'Who Do You Think You Are?' programme. She's also an accomplished, prizewinning author. As her alter ego (Mistress Agnes) Janet spends time living in the seventeenth century, where she imparts information about life in the time of the English Civil War. • www.thehistoryinterpreter. wordpress.com • www.familyhistoryfederation. com/family-history-speakernorth-devon-janet-few • https://amzn.to/2WDfEss
This Zoom-based event is free to members, but is also available to non-members at a cost of £3. If you wish to 'attend', please register via our website www. avsfhg.org.uk/events/book/ and you'll be sent joining instructions. Don't leave it too late as places are filling up fast! However, at a cost of £6 for a full year's membership, why not consider signing up with this growing band of family history enthusiasts now? Membership taken out after October 1st lasts until the following December. Further programme: December 13th: Denise Bates 'Forenames and What They Reveal about Ancestors' at 7:30pm on Zoom.
Bungay Camera Club's 'Still Life' competition 'Still Life' was the theme of the club's latest competition, again held virtually. Judge Robin Claydon ARPS DPAGB BPE3* gave scores and comments on sixty images, spread across colour, monochrome and DPI (digital projected image) categories. 13-year-old Matt Carter from Halesworth is one of ABC Radio's familiar voices every Saturday morning. Here, he tells us why he got involved with ABC Radio. This time last year, while putting together 'shows' at home during lockdown, I'd never had dreamed of being a presenter on the radio, but when my dad saw an advert for a new community
radio station being launched, he contacted them and asked if I might be able to get involved and after a few Zoom chats, I was offered my very own weekly slot! As they say, the rest is history and here I am, presenting a twenty-minute slot on ABC Radio every Saturday morning and I absolutely love it! I couldn't be more excited

when every Saturday comes around and we go to the studio, seeing all the 'Wayne at the Weekend' family (Wayne, Fran and Katy). We have a right laugh, and I can't thank Wayne enough for believing in me and pretty much letting me do what I want. In my weekly slot, there's 'Head's up Halesworth' (where I share what's going on in Halesworth, my home town), my 'back to front quiz', my TV guide and my joke of the week, along with my choice of music. I've always been interested in radio and I hope I'll learn more and eventually have my own show one day. Matt presents his 'Teenager Takeover' every Saturday, as part of Wayne at the Weekend at 11:.40am and can be heard at: www.abcradio.co.uk and via Amazon Alexa.

With HMRC recently having struck a deal with Air BnB to obtain the income details of all their 225,000 UK hosts, if you have current or historic undeclared rental income, you really should bring your affairs up-to-date and declare any issues sooner rather than later. Largely the only tax "amnesty" that HMRC are currently running is the Let Property Campaign (LPC). This is targeted at all landlords and was introduced with a blaze of publicity using billboards, TV and radio advertising a few years ago. The LPC enables landlords to sort out historic irregularities or omissions with a lower penalty regime available - provided you tell them before they contact you about it. How does the LPC work? You (or a tax advisor on your behalf) will need to contact HMRC to advise them of your intention to declare under the LPC which then starts a ninetyday clock to provide details of
the income and expenses and calculate the tax due on the formal declaration itself. Penalties and interest are "self-assessed", although HMRC do give very strong guidance as to what rates of penalty they will consider acceptable. If the issue is classed as a "careless mistake" (for example, including capital repayments when claiming mortgage interest relief), you may only need to go back six years and any penalty may be negligible. If however, the issue is that you never told HMRC in the first place, the full twentyyears may be appropriate and the penalty higher. By voluntarily declaring and correcting your affairs, the ultimate penalty will always be lower than if HMRC contact you about it first. Occasional landlords may ultimately not need the LPC. With the annual £1,000 rental allowance, or the £7,500 rent-aroom allowance (available only if any period of letting of your main home overlaps in full or in part
with your own occupancy) there may not ultimately be any tax due. However, you should still notify HMRC of the rental income as it's up to HMRC to allow you not to file tax returns, not for you to decide arbitrarily not to tell them in the first place. Professional advice is essential. Hope this helps! For further information, please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) on: robin. beadle@ensors.co.uk. Specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.
