Update from Dr. Dan Poulter MP Just a few weeks ago, much of our area experienced an extreme weather event that caused major flooding. Well over 500 homes and businesses in the communities in and around Framlingham, Debenham, Wickham Market, and Needham Market were directly impacted. On a personal note, I was forced to abandon my car, to carry family members to safety through the rising flood waters, to spend the night in temporary accommodation, and my office in Framlingham was waist deep in water. I know that many others were much worse affected. During the floods, and in the immediate aftermath, we saw the very best of Suffolk, as farmers and other members of our communities came together to help out those in
need. Tractor drivers helped to rescue schoolchildren, and thanks to community volunteers, emergency hubs were set up in local towns and villages to support those stranded in the floods. My immediate priority once the floods began to subside, has been to visit as many homes and businesses as I could, to personally offer help and support. In Parliament, I raised the challenges facing flood impacted homes and businesses at Prime Minister's Questions. I am pleased that in the difficult circumstances facing so many in our area, that my intervention has helped to secure a special Government flood support package for local homes and businesses impacted by the flooding which can be accessed though our local councils. Flooded households in Suffolk are entitled to claim Government support, with an immediate £500 for flooded homes, and another £5,000 available to homeowners to rebuild and recover in the longer term. Flood impacted businesses are entitled to claim an immediate £2,500 in financial support. As we continue to recover and rebuild from the floods, there may still be families and businesses in difficulty. As we reflect on what has happened, I do not believe that any amount of planning would have made a significant difference to the flooding
that resulted from the extreme weather which combined with a high tide in Suffolk's tidal rivers to cause maximum destruction. In some places, flood mitigation measures were already in place to manage the risk of flooding but were overwhelmed. Nonetheless, it will now be important for everyone, and in particular, our local council planners to look at what can be done to prepare better for extreme weather events the future. Certainly, the re-wilding policies, which have resulted in the reduced clearance of our roadside drains and gullies, have clearly led to increased flooding at times of sudden and unpredictable rainfall and will need to be reassessed. Finally, as we enjoy ourselves over the festive period, a thank you to our emergency services who work all year round to look after us, and to keep us safe. As usual, I shall be working during the busy Christmas and New Year period as a doctor in the NHS and shall be spending a night shift with our Suffolk Police. For the tenth year, the residents of Double Street, Framlingham (a small historic street located opposite the church entrance) are producing an Advent Calendar of decorated windows. At least one window is revealed each day so that by the 24th, almost all the houses have a window on display. These will remain on view until January 3rd. As well as providing an event for people to enjoy, we also raise money for charity and have collection boxes along the
street. This year the charities are: Framlingham Library and Scout and Guide group and also the Disaster Emergency Committee. This year, we're also running a competition to find the members of 'The Tin Can Choir' which was a hugely popular window last year. The 24 members will be revealed throughout the advent period, one per window, so that by the 24th, they will all be on view. Entry forms and details available from Framlingham library. Leiston Town Bowls Club end-of-season report The 2023 season is over and whilst results could have been better, the season was a success. At the AGM on October 4th, 20 members were present showing an increase over recent years, again an indication of the growth of the club this season. Reports from Secretary, Treasurer and Chairman all spoke of the welcome change of camaraderie, atmosphere within the club and the new enthusiasm all indicators for a brighter future again. The Treasurers Report spoke of the success on fundraising helping keep a healthy balance, mostly due to our tournaments and playing host to county games. One major break on a lawn mower could soon swallow our good balance. Thanks must go to the clubs ladies who provided cakes, refreshments and a friendly welcome to all visitors, their efforts producing a very productive income to our finances. The secretary was pleased to announce that again next year our highly thought of facilities were requested to host three County Games and two league had requested the use of our facilities to facilitate their finals days. This demonstrates the standing in which Leiston Town
Bowls is regarded county-wide. This year also saw the return of a celibately evening function at Sizewell Sports & Social Club, where nearly 30 members enjoyed a meal and get together. Next year, a full return to presentation evening. 2024 has the makings of further progress when we will see the new players progressing their freshly acquired skills on the green, success breeds success, news of our growth has already spread and we are aware of further new bowlers wishing to join. The end of the season does not mean the end of the work on the green, the winter maintenance programme is often busier than during the season. The green keeper scarifying, dressing, reseeding, for him the work continues weekly through the closed season. It's the winter care that provides the foundation for the lush playing surface for the summer playing season. To members, a reminder of need for help both on and off the green. The 2023 sailing season is over, not the best for weather, which did affect the turn out. Once the boats are put away, it's time for the Working Party to get into action, repairing and cleaning craft, pontoons, ramp and clubhouse, making things ready for the next year. The group, which meets on Tuesday morning, is always popular, volunteers are not all sailors but they enjoy the outdoor tasks and camaraderie. The club held its prize giving event on November 9th and among the cups presented was a Navigation Race cup given in memory of Major Denzil Cowdry, who in 1969 had organised the first Mirror Week. Another new cup this year, was for the Deben Yacht Club Person of the Year,

We are approaching the end of another extremely busy year for our branch. Fosterers have been kept very busy caring for a large number of felines. Adoptions have been a little slow, but have been steady. It looks as though we shall be caring for more kittens into the new year. Our fundraisers have also been doing sterling work in helping to raise money for us to continue the work we do. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us this year in so many ways from donating cat food, money, gifts for sales, knitted goods, volunteering and of course grateful thanks go to those who have adopted cats and kittens. Woodbridge Cruising Club enjoy memorable onshore activities and social gatherings As the festive season approaches, Woodbridge Cruising Club members are enjoying on-shore activities based at the club house ideally situated overlooking the River Deben. The sociable Wednesday suppers are a chance to enjoy delicious food and a drink, whilst the laying up supper was a more formal occasion, held aptly enough on Trafalgar Day, with a Nelson-themed menu and the
traditional toast to Nelson by the Commodore, Mark Richardson. Members and their dogs enjoy the fortnightly Thursday walks are enjoyed by members and despite sometimes soggy going, finish with a welcome meal at a local pub. The most recent walk was along the River Deben past Stonner Point and Methersgatge Quay, and finished at the Sutton Plough, led by Brian. The Sunday autumn talks
Boat Jumble Sale
included a lecture to a full house by Roger Knight of a cruise around Loch Ewe and Scapa Flow, and the part they paid in the history of the Navy and the World Wars. Paul and Alison gave a fascinating glimpse into sailing around the Danish Limfjord, a little sailed rural area, inspiring members to visit there. The November AGM saw the committee members are elected and reports given as to the year's activities, including cruise captain Andy, and cups were presented to members for sailing achievements. The Ukulele band 'Jetsam' had a sing along evening, with hits from 60s to 80s and a film evening The Voyage of the Madmen was the dramatic tale of 2018 Golden Globe race, both events raising money for the Woolverstone Project. Although the official cruising season is over this year, the club still has a thriving winter social scene.
Badminton in Kesgrave Woodbridge Badminton Club is playing at Kesgrave High School for the winter season (September-April). Normally, adult club night is 7:30pm to 10pm on Wednesday evenings and juniors takes place 7pm to 8:30pm on Mondays. Junior club is currently full with a waiting list. However, we are unable to use the Sports Hall at the High School between November 13th and Christmas, so are having to make other arrangements. Adult club nights will move to the Kesgrave Community Centre Sports Hall on the following nights: November 17th 7:30pm, November 30th 8pm, December 7th 8pm and December 14th
8pm. Unfortunately, the junior club will have to be cancelled during this period and refunds have been offered. Adults can come along for a guest session for £6 to try us out, refundable if you join as a member. We welcome a range of abilities but unfortunately not complete beginners at the adult club. We hope to be back at Kesgrave High School on January 3rd for adults and January 8th for juniors. The Salvation Army is calling on the community to donate new toys to its Christmas Present Appeal and support families who will struggle to make ends meet over the festive season. Salvation Army church leader Major Alan Hill said: "Helping a parent provide a gift for their child is more than just financial support, it brings the joy of Christmas into their home. We have seen the devastating effect of the cost of living crisis. People are really struggling and so we are doing what we can to relieve the pressure this Christmas. The Salvation Army's present appeal is an opportunity for people in our communities to embrace the spirit of Christmas and give to families and individuals who have nothing. We have
The 'Big Countdown' has begun for Woodbridge Rotary Club. It may seem early, but when planning several events and all that is entailed, it is never too early. Giving due respect to Remembrance Sunday on November 12th where the club laid a wreath, on November 15th we erected the Christmas Tree on the Market Hill, paid for by a generous donation given to the club by a very valid member. The weather was much calmer than last year. Working with Woodbridge Town Council and Deben Rotary Club on November 30th, there will be a big Christmas lights switch on in the town. Father Christmas will be in the Thoroughfare from about 5:30pm with his sleigh, both clubs will be helping him with a financial collection for the Salvation Army Foodbank. Having reluctantly turned down the chance of a tenancy with Adnam’s Brewery twice in the past due to covid, we were offered the opportunity again this year when The Crown Inn became boarded up after losing its previous tenant. We decided third time lucky... Go for it and invest in the future of The Crown Inn. The Crown’s future became very important to us. Having 25 year’s experience running two pubs previously and The Mill Inn, Aldeburgh for the last 10 years, we were very sad to see such a beautiful old building standing empty and alone. Snape village are lucky enough to have two other pubs besides The Crown Inn and we felt we needed to offer something different to do our own thing and survive in a competitive sector. Pub life is a way of life and is very hard and the best way to survive is by supporting each other, not against. We have spent the last five months blood, sweat and tears (Steve almost lost two fingers) renovating The Crown Inn with what we hope will be seen as taking great care to restore and enhance the old character and add life back into this graceful lady. The foundations were there, she just needed her make-up.
The Crown will still be the country pub we all know and love. We will serve fabulous Adnams ales, beer and wines and our food offering will be “A little Taste of Italy”. With Italian family heritage and a background in Italian food, we felt The Crown gave us the perfect opportunity to add something new to the area, our food offer will be traditional rustic Italian comfort food. We have had a beautiful front terrace laid in readiness for the next summer season, which will be planted and furnished in the spring. The terrace will be available to book for private get-togethers for antipasti and wine/champagne evenings on the terrace during the summer. At this point, we would like to thank Graham Carver, our caretaker/gardener, who spent the first two months ploughing through the six-foot-high stinging nettles etc. His good work with new garden plans and ideas will be ongoing! butter onto the dry ingredients and add the vanilla, mixing with a spatula until it clumps together to form a rough dough (or use a stand mixer with the paddle attachment on slow speed). • Press the dough evenly into a greased and lined 23cm x 23cm x 5cm square baking tin (if you're using a loose-bottomed tin make sure it's fully lined so the liquid mix doesn't seep out). • Bake for 10-15 minutes until firm and dry to the touch, though still very pale in colour. Remove and fully cool. • Reduce the oven heat to 175°C/155°C fan/gas 3½. • Wash the lemons thoroughly. Slice two of the lemons into rings, 3mm thick, and remove the pips. • Place the slices into a blender and grind to a pulp. • Add the sugar and cornflour and continue until you have a fine purée. • Juice the remaining two lemons and add this juice to the blender along with the eggs, melted butter and a generous pinch of salt. Pulse briefly to combine. • Place the tin with the shortbread base into your oven, keeping the door open. Carefully pour the lemon mix over the shortbread base and bake for 20-25 minutes until firm. The lemon layer should be set but not browned. • Cool, then chill in the fridge. • Once firm, carefully remove from the tin, dust heavily with icing sugar and cut into bars.

U3A East Suffolk
A good year for the Swifts This has been another good year for swifts in Woodbridge. Nest sites: Nick Marshall has been monitoring the nest sites. The season began as usual in the final days of April with a few early sightings of returning birds. The pairs which returned early got on with breeding, despite persistent northerly winds and cool temperatures during the first half of May which held back the majority of returning birds for many days. By the end of May/early June the weather had improved and our breeding swifts had returned in numbers at least as good as last year. The continuous hot, sunny weather of June enabled the birds to find plenty of insects, and many nest boxes with cameras were able to report good, steady development of chicks. The total number of known occupied sites
was 57, compared with 48 last year, a heartening increase. The remarkable finding is that 30 of these are in boxes compared with 27 in roofs. This is a welcome result of our efforts over the past eight years. We suspect there are more natural nest sites still to be found as it's not so easy to spot a swift flying into a gap under the soffits or the roof tiles as into a nest box. We are asking several questions. Are those nesting in boxes doing so because their nests in roofs have been blocked by roof or gutter repairs? Are swifts now identifying nest boxes as a natural nest site? If you have any sightings that you have not yet told us about please contact us. The number of birds visible in the sky over the town increased dramatically in July, as usual partly as a result of this year's young already on the wing but mainly because of the arrival of the final wave of one to two yearold birds returning from Africa to prospect for nest sites for next year. I personally saw over 60 birds above the town in glorious weather on July 8th, but despite an excellent turnout of some 40 people for our swift walk the following day, the weather by then was wet and cool so numbers of swifts seen were not great.
By the end of July, most of our swifts had left, though with perhaps slightly more than usual staying well into August to finish breeding, maybe as a result of the delayed arrival of many birds because of the cool weather in May. Nest box sales: Laurence Potter has continued our nest box sales, selling nearly 40 boxes to Woodbridge residents. He has much enjoyed visiting the proposed sites and giving advice about swifts and their amazing life cycle. He has been making nest boxes for other birds such as barn owl, tawny owl and spotted flycatcher. He also helped on the SOS Swifts stand at the Suffolk Show, with activities for school children. The nest boxes have a white PVC roof which reduces the temperature inside the box by reflecting the heat, thus making the suitable for south and west facing aspects. Thanks to a new arrangement for making these boxes we are now able to sell them at the original price of £25. Our next project: A swift display board in the Market Square: Look out for our new display board out side the Shire Hall and opposite our new nest boxes on St. Mary's House. It should be ready in the next few months. Thanks to the generosity of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, we have been awarded a grant to cover the costs. This will be our third grant from this organisation and we are most grateful to them for their support. Swift walks in 2024: As this year's walk was so well attended, we may well run two
walks next summer. One of these could involve a survey to search for more nests in roofs in different parts of the town. News from SOS Swifts: It is good to hear of an increase in swifts using nest boxes across the county. SOS Swifts' belief is that the primary reason for the decline in swifts' population in Suffolk is the loss of their natural nest sites in the nooks and crannies of older buildings during renovation works. It is still worrying that we don't know the full extent of the number of natural nest sites are being blocked up but there is hope. We now know we can both create new swift colonies and expand existing ones by fitting nest boxes, and we are always happy to help with mitigation advice and boxes when we know that their natural nest sites are threatened. A Christmas break, then Fairtrade full steam in the New Year! Woodbridge Christmas will soon be upon us, so u3a East Suffolk allows its members a breather in December to catch up on all the preparations! But, come the New Year, it's full steam ahead with another series of lively and interesting speaker meetings, which occur once a month at each of four different venues. In January members can enjoy talks about the history of fish and chips, the statues of Ipswich, Lake Garda and intriguingly a talk entitled "How to sell the Eiffel Tower", all about famous frauds. Local charity Christmas card shop Celebrate Christmas celebrates remarkable milestone with Martlesham Brass The Woodbridge 41 Club Charity Christmas Card Shop hit an impressive milestone on November 15th by raising £1 million for charity. This money has been raised over the past 31 years through the sale of Christmas cards in a variety of pop-up shops in Woodbridge town centre. Currently, the shop is in the old HSBC premises (37 Thoroughfare, Woodbridge) and is open 10am to 4pm during the week and 9:30am to 5pm on Saturdays. It's also open on Sundays in the run up to Christmas. Over the last 31 years, the shop has supported over 50 charities ranging from large national charities (such as Barnardos and
RNLI) to local charities including Suffolk Punch Trust, EACH, Just 42 and many others. Roger Parker has been managing the popular shop, since 1993. "I'm very proud that we have raised £1 million. It's something I've had in my sights and been talking about for 15 years! I enjoy working with so many different charities, both big and small. There are some wonderful causes out there and because we have very few running costs, almost the entire turnover goes to them. It's a big team effort running the shop and I'm very grateful to all
the volunteers who help in the shop, some of whom have been involved for 30 years. Over the years, many landlords and agents have been kind enough to let us use their empty premises. As a result, we have been found in many of the shops in the Thoroughfare, St. Mary's Church Centre and the library. We're also very lucky to have lots of regular customers who come back year after year. I think it's a bit of a game for them, tracking us down and working out which empty shop we've taken over!" The shop is open until December 16th and probably has the widest selection of charity Christmas cards in Suffolk.

HMRC are currently undertaking compliance checks for those who should be paying the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) but, HMRC suspect, are not. The tax charge applies to anyone (including your spouse or partner) who claims child benefit and whose adjusted net income exceeds £50,000 annually. (Where both spouses/partners exceed £50,000, the HICBC is levied against the partner with the higher income). The charge is equal to 1% of the child benefit received by the household for every £100 of adjusted net income received above £50,000 so that by the time you reach £60,000 income, the Child Benefit has been reclaimed by the government. HICBC has existed for two decades but now HMRC have started using their "Connect" computer system to link child benefit records, P60s and Tax Returns (if filed) to addresses to determine whether and where there are individuals who should be paying but are not. If you know for certain that your salaried income for a tax year will exceed the £60,000 upper limit, to avoid both the HICBC tax charge and possibly having to file a Tax Return purely for this reason, some parents are simply not claiming the Child Benefit in the first place. However, as you can only backdate a claim for Child Benefit for three months, if you later find that your income has dropped (for example for a period out of work, or as a result
of a downturn in self-employment profits) you may find that the approach of not claiming from the start of the tax year will ultimately deny you child benefit that you may otherwise have been entitled to. Therefore, for some taxpayers, it is better to claim the child benefit and then pay back overpayments under the HICBC system, despite the additional aggravation that this may cause. If your income has exceeded £50,000 and you have not paid any HICBC that you ought to have, it is better to tell HMRC and correct your affairs voluntarily rather than HMRC discovering something themselves. A "prompted declaration" (only admitting to something after HMRC has enquired about it) is always looked upon less favourably than a voluntary declaration should penalties become involved. Beccles Inner Wheel In October, members of the Beccles Inner Wheel Club visited the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) base in Norwich. The EAAA is a charity providing a helicopter emergency medical service for the people of East Anglia, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year from the Norwich base. It was launched in 2000 and has two high-tech helicopters, with specialist doctors, critical care paramedics and highly trained pilots for night flying to unknown and unlit sites. Some of us will have witnessed the striking bright yellow helicopter flying overhead and landing in Beccles to attend an accident or other emergency. We were able to see the helicopter and its high-
tech and medical equipment, chat to the crew and visit the training suite and sleeping pods which offer rest for crew waiting an emergency call. A second base is in Cambridge. This year's Inner Wheel President, Gail Harris, has chosen the EAAA as her charity and the visits were arranged by member Jacquie Greenfield, who for many years was a volunteer for the EAAA. The Inner Wheel works hard throughout the year to raise funds for good causes such as this while at the same time enjoying social activities and outings of interest. Our Ruff Stuff off-road Cycle event took place on October 29th, starting from Butley Village Hall. After the previous three days of rain, the weather took pity on us and it was fine. Over 200 people of all ages took part from all over East Anglia. We raised over £2,000 for our Rotary charities. Our registration desk was manned by Rtn Sally Green and her husband Spence. Many thanks to both of you. The club organised a raffle, which raised £200. The raffle
was run by Rtn John Pearson and Ross Woolley. Our President, Simon Holloway, pulled out all the tickets. Members of the club acted as car park attendants and marshals on the route. Thanks to Rtn Martin Kenyon of our daughter club, Woodbridge Deben, for helping out. Our thanks to Woodbridge Inner Wheel for providing great food and drinks. You can now drop or collect things on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm, Wednesday mornings from 10:30am to 1pm, Thursday evenings from 7pm to 9pm and on Friday mornings from 10:30 to 1pm. Plus, we run the Martlesham Repair Hub on the second Saturday of the month. The next one being January 13th. We are tackling a wide variety of items, from audio equipment and vacuums to sewing machines and doll's houses. Apart from the money you might save having items repaired rather than replaced, there's the saving of the planet's resources too. So help us to help you by bringing your things for repair. Friendship boxes and mine signs for Ukraine
Peace - A concern, a monument and a way to a brighter future In response to widespread and deep local concern about Gaza and Israel, a Vigil for Peace was held on Kingston Field on November 3rd. The event was attended by 41 people from Woodbridge and nearby communities. They appreciated the stimulation and comfort of gathering and sharing the company of like-minds. Tranquil shelter was provided by the town's Tree for Peace monument. After a brief introduction, the group joined an extended period of silence led by Woodbridge Quakers. Afterwards, Councillor Sue Bale said: "Our thoughts were focussed on the terrible suffering of our fellow human beings in the current Israel/Gaza warfare, and on the urgent desire and need for peace in the area." Maureen from Woodbridge Quakers said: "We stood quietly
together to send our strong message of peace and love to those in Israel and Palestine." The monument's founder, Michael Madden, introduced the tree to visitors as a symbol formally dedicated in 2021 to promote deeper understanding about peace. "Over the last 100 years" he reflected, "mankind has learned a great deal about how peace can be built and why it breaks down. It's good to hear that learning clearly in recent war commentary and journalism. But it's tragic to see it so much disregarded in the conduct of international and intercommunity relations." A bystander suggested: "We need peace monuments and learning even more now than when this Tree was dedicated". Mr Madden agreed and pointed out that: "Each of us can lay foundations for a brighter future
by using our natural peacemaking capacities a lot more often; for example, our sensitivity, tolerance, empathy, co-operation and forgiveness." He added: "There is now a second Tree for Peace on the town's Fen Meadow, and work is in hand to create an informative Trail for Peace and an educational website." In May this year, Woodbridge Rotary Club received a notice from Rotary Great Britain and Ireland Ukraine Crisis Taskforce asking if the club could help children in Ukraine. The task force (made up of Rotarians from both Great Britain and Ireland and Ukraine) had identified the two top priority areas, both focused on children: 1. Friendship boxes for children containing interesting and stimulating things to do while in shelters or at home, which can become a storage box used for special things all children like to keep. 2. Mines and unexploded ordinance are a danger to people, especially children. Stop innocent children being killed. The aim of Rotary in Ukraine is to mark heavily mined areas with signs to warn children and adults of danger. They need at least 100,000 signs. Our Council agreed that we should support this appeal. Our International Chair, Ashley Meyer agreed to lead the project. He worked with Rtn John Treadway, who was a retired Head Teacher, on the proposition to take to our primary and secondary schools. They agreed that the approach to the schools should be at the beginning of the new term in September. John would lead
the approach to primary schools whilst Ashley concentrated on our secondary schools. Before the project began, John showed the club an interview with Olena Zelenska (First Lady of Ukraine and wife to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy), who spoke movingly of the plight of Ukrainian children. One third of schools had been damaged or destroyed and many children were regularly sleeping in underground shelters, and some losing the will to live. John took a whole school assembly in each of the schools in the Woodbridge area: Kyson Primary, Melton Primary, St. Mary's Primary and Woodbridge Primary. The theme was introduced by sharing games and puzzles they were used to, concentrating on those that featured 'Spot the Difference'. From those they knew, he moved on to 'before and after' images showing the difference the bombing had made to those living in Ukraine and how Woodbridge children might be able to send items to go in the treasure boxes. To back the message given to the children, John provided an information sheet for parents that was sent home electronically as well as a little booklet to go in the boxes giving information on the schools involved. Each school had a large box in

which children could place their donations. It was agreed with the schools that the boxes would be collected on October 30th at the end of half term. In addition to the primary schools, Wotsits Store in the Thoroughfare supplied a box for the public to donate. The store also made a donation. The boxes were then transferred to Woodbridge Methodist Church, who had kindly lent us the use of a room in which to sort out the boxes into the friendship boxes. Ashley led several Rotarian colleagues in helping sort the donations. The Club greatly appreciated the anonymous donation to pay for the boxes and the transport to the depot for dispatch to Ukraine. The appeal to four local primary schools was overwhelming. By Wednesday, we'd filled 44 boxes and still had donations over! Ashley contacted the depot to see if they could take a large cardboard box with the remainder and got approval. The clubs thanks go to Kyson, Melton, St. Mary's, and Woodbridge Primary Schools for all their help from the children for the donations. So on November 2nd, the van arrived and Ashley with help from Rtn. Simon Holloway and the driver
packed the van. That leaves just one more event in which Woodbridge School have agreed to help us, by allowing the club to make a collection during their school 6th form play, 'Jack Absolute Flies Again' on November 15th and 16th for the mine sign appeal. The East of England Co-op, the region's largest independent retailer, has re-opened its Leiston travel branch. The travel branch, located in the East of England Co-op food store in Leiston, has made a welcome return to the town after closing during the pandemic in 2021. Its return makes it the only walk-in travel branch in Leiston. The decision to bring the business back was made following a boom in holiday bookings across the region, with sales at East of England Co-op Travel up 42.5% on last year. A recent report from travel association Abta says that Britons' holidaying could hit record highs in 2024, with two-thirds of British people expecting to travel overseas in the next 12 months. Other berry producing plants also come into their own during the winter months. As well as being attractive to gardeners, they are often delicious for wildlife. Whether you have them in your garden, or love a woodland walk, some of the winter berries to spot through the colder months include: Spindle (Euonymous Europaeas) with vibrant pink fruits that split to reveal bright orange seeds that are loved by birds, mice and foxes, but beware, the leaves and fruits are
toxic to humans. Rowan (Sorbus Aucuparia) which has small orange-red berries from August to January that are popular with many types of birds and safe for people to eat, but have a sour taste. Juniper (Juniperus Communis) an evergreen with fragrant needle-like leaves and purple-black berries that are a favourite with birds and are also good for flavouring gin and sauces. Apart from tending to festive foliage, other jobs for December on the RHS Gardener's Checklist include: • Take hardwood cuttings. • Prune deciduous shrubs. • Prune apple and pear trees. • Leave parsnips in the ground until needed, they taste sweeter after a frost. • Start forcing rhubarb either in the greenhouse or outdoors. • Trees and shrubs can still be planted outside. • Reduce watering of houseplants. • Plan your planting and crops for next year. • Make eco-friendly choices by selecting disease resistant fruit trees or roses to reduce use of chemicals in the garden.

Framlingham Town FC becomes latest club to benefit from Howdens £3M 'Game Changer' programme The next generation of footballers are set to benefit from a £3M programme aimed at improving clubhouse facilities, as Framlingham Town Football Club (FTFC) becomes the latest club to receive support from Howdens and England Football. FTFC was named as one of 450 lucky clubs to receive a state-of-the-art kitchen as part of the Howdens Game Changer Programme which was launched earlier this year with an aim to support grassroots football with improved catering facilities; to bring local communities closer together. For over 130 years, FTFC has been nurturing sporting talent and
encouraging the local community to get active. It is currently home to 275 junior members, three men's senior teams, an emerging women's side and a veteran's team. In addition to bringing communities closer together, the pioneering programme will play a vital role in increasing income streams and improving the overall financial health of the club, so that it can continue to thrive. Tom Palmer (FTFC Chairman) said: "Our club boasts a rich history, and it is fantastic to witness the vibrant activity we experience on match days. The energy and enthusiasm of our local community adds a special dimension to our club and these upgraded facilities will
considerably improve our match day catering. The generous 'Game Changer' funding has enabled the club to provide our loyal volunteers with a vastly improved setup. This will allow us to improve the speed and quality of our hospitality on match days, which should in turn, generate more vital funds to enable us to develop the club. Local, dedicated individuals have been contributing their time and effort for up to 50 years, embodying the spirit of our club's legacy.
