Simply Stunning Flick & Son sponsors the successful Heritage Coast Run
light, improved security lighting outside, and CCTV. As a result, we are in high demand for birthday parties, weddings, Christenings, wakes and all sorts of social occasions. The Committee is made up entirely of volunteers from different backgrounds and meets once a month. We all bring our own strengths and attributes to the group and have some fun at the same time. The thing that binds us together is that we love being part of the village community and thrive on enabling our residents and farther-flung locals to come together to enjoy a good time and catch up with friends and neighbours. It would be wonderful to see even more of you at our events! Better still, why not join the Committee? There are only six of us and we will have a couple of vacancies after the next AGM at the end of July. We are a friendly and lively bunch, and any help or skills you can offer would be very gratefully received. If you are interested in finding out more about anything in this article, hiring the hall or joining the committee, please drop an email to holtonandblyfordvillagehall@ hotmail.com. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and we hope to see you soon.
Sunday 1st May at 8am saw 300 energetic runners gather in Thorpeness for the annual Heritage Coast Run. Sponsored by us, the Flick & Son team were out in full force with nine runners taking part in the 10k and Half Marathon routes. This fantastic event, organised by the Aldeburgh Triathlon group had everyone keen to get round fast as the smell of bacon, sausages and burgers sizzled in the air. Raising money for charity each year, with main charity sponsored this year being the Knodishall Cancer Research Group, we’re certain that this event will only continue to grow in popularity, so don’t forget to look out for next year and get involved. Paul Gray, Chief Executive Officer at Flick & Son comments, “It was brilliant to see so many people and their dogs down at the pavilion on a beautiful Sunday

morning. I was so proud of our team and everyone that took part for fun, managing to get themselves round the course and some achieving incredible times that they should very pleased with. We have now decided to not only continue to sponsor the Aldeburgh Triathlon but to enter two teams and I have even been inspired to get myself fit to do the swim. It really is great to be able to support these wonderful events along with others in our community and we look forward to the many events coming up this year organised by amazing people giving up their time so that others can enjoy.”

For those who don’t know me, my name is Hilary Garner and I am the current Chair of the Holton & Blyford Village Hall Committee. I thought I would write about what we do and how we function in a bid to spark your interest either as a hirer or as a potential committee member. The most rewarding thing we do is host a variety of events during the year including Bingo every fortnight and Big Breakfast and the Pop-up Pub every month, plus our craft fairs in Spring and Autumn. Pre-Covid we also arranged a number of larger events such as the Classic Car Show & Fete, Burns’ Night, a Gin Festival and an Autumn Supper, which were all very well attended and great fun. We are fortunate to be supported by several regular hirers, such as a Music & Movement group, Indoor Bowls Club, Pop Chorus, U3A Ukelele Group, two Badminton Clubs, Chediston Art Group, Halesworth Dementia Care, Halesworth Parkinson Group, U3A Wine Group, and Cancer Research. The hall is a registered charity, and all profits are ploughed back into keeping the hall in tip-top condition. Thanks to the hard work of the Committee in recent years, the hall has excellent kitchen facilities, a refurbished stage with new curtains, a redecorated meeting room, new doors and windows all round, including fire doors with glass panels to bring in more natural

CREATIVE DESIGNS • BESPOKE MANUFACTURING • CRAFTSMEN INSTALLED
Please call us to arrange for your FREE, no obligation design and quote. Established in 1980, we have unrivalled experience with thousands of quality kitchen installations throughout Norfolk and Suffolk.
Now Open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10am - 4pm
People from east Suffolk and neighbouring areas are being invited to find out more about the free services offered by the Pear Tree Fund, meet its friendly staff and volunteers and enjoy refreshments and live music at a special open day. The Pear Tree Centre, in Bungay Road, Halesworth, will throw open its doors on Sunday 15 May. During the celebrations, Lowestoft Chorale will perform British choral music from the 13th to 20th century from 1pm to 3pm, while one of the charity’s founders and former trustee Barbara Kell will officially open Richard’s Garden, which is dedicated to the memory of her late husband, at 1pm. Richard Kell was a wellknown local GP and chair of Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund, the Pear Tree Fund’s predecessor, for 18 years before retiring from the role in 2017. He died in July 2019 of motor neurone disease at the age of 64. The garden has been created in his memory as a tranquil space in which visitors can relax
and includes a striking piece of artwork by Suffolk sculptor Brian Alabaster, who was one of Richard’s friends. Barbara said: “It is so sad that Richard had not been able to see the completion of The Pear Tree Centre, but my family and I are honoured that the garden has been named in his memory. “Richard was passionate about the outdoors, walking and wildlife, and loved nothing better than pottering around in our garden. He would have loved the calm, tranquil ambience of the space created by Edward Flaxman and his team at Studio 31.” Kevin Vaughan, chief executive of the Pear Tree Fund, said: “We are really excited about this open day and being given the opportunity to throw open our doors to our local community. We’d encourage as many people to come along as possible and find out more about the wide range of free services we provide to people with life-changing illnesses and long-term health conditions, together with their
families and carers and those who have experienced a bereavement. “This includes everything from a cup of tea and listening ear to help with wellbeing, group support, information and advice and sessions with our qualified counsellors and complementary therapists. We also offer social welfare advice about areas such as benefits and support with digital literacy, and work closely with the voluntary sector, community groups and partner charities to put the right help in place to meet the needs of the whole family. “This is a great opportunity for us to showcase some of the fantastic work carried out by our team and volunteers which is making a real difference to local people when they need it most.” Everyone is welcome to drop in to the open day, which takes place between 11am and 3pm. Alternatively, you can find out more about the support offered by the Pear Tree Fund or to donate to the charity by calling 01986 899655, emailing info@ peartreefund.org or visiting www. peartreefund.org

A Suffolk cinema manager is celebrating 30 years at the iconic Leiston Film Theatre. Wayne Burns joined Leiston Film Theatre in 1992 at the age of 22 and has spent three decades nurturing the venue’s owners and supporters through the cinema’s remarkable transformation, which has seen it blossom from a neglected ‘flea-pit’, into one of the most cherished independent venues in the country. Wayne, who’s love for cinema hails back to an open day at Aldeburgh Cinema as a teenager, was persistent in gaining employment as a projectionist at the seaside cinema in the 1980’s, fulfilling a childhood dream and being trained in the art of screening 16mm and 35mm films. In 1992, Leiston Town Council, who had saved the Leiston Picture House from closure in 1976, advertised for an assistant manager and it was Wayne who was offered the job, although as Wayne recalls in his 2014 book, Spilling the Popcorn, he wasn’t entirely sure that the move was for the best.
“Initially, I had grave reservations about joining the Film Theatre. It was very evident that there was an awful lot that had to be done, for the venue to offer an experience that the paying public expected. Thankfully, the formation of the Film Theatre Support Club in 1992 and a renewed resolve from the Town Council to see Leiston’s cinema reach its full potential, meant that we were able to slowly turn our vision into an eventual reality.” said Wayne. Following a substantial programme of repairs and refurbishment, audiences began to return in earnest and Wayne’s ambitious programming saw many big films being screened quicker and the introduction of an improved selection of live entertainment provided an annual package for both stage and screen, including a hugely popular annual Pantomime, held in January each year. Wayne took over from Peter Free as Film Theatre manager in 1994 and as the venue’s reputation and audience numbers grew, premier seating
was added, the projection and sound equipment was upgraded, the foyer was enlarged and new toilets were introduced, with Wayne remaining very hands on with all projects, to ensure that everything was just as he preferred it to be. The result saw admissions sore to the extent that at the end of 2019, the venue recorded its highest ever admissions since the Town Council took over the 107-yearold cinema. Wayne is grateful of the support that he has received over the years from the Town Council, Support Club and of the many members of staff, who make the
experience of visiting the Film Theatre so unique and enjoyable for their loyal customers. The Town Council are sincerely thankful of Wayne’s efforts since 1992. “Leiston
Town Council would like to congratulate Wayne whole heartedly on 30 years exemplary service at Leiston Film Theatre. His experience and knowledge are second to none and Wayne

Financial Focus On... For the self-employed and partnerships, whilst the tax year ends on 5 April annually, you are entitled to use whatever accounting year you like. Put simply, the accounting year end that finishes in the tax year provides the assessed profits for that tax year. This of course means that someone with a yearend of 5 April 2020 has his profits assessed in 2019/20 whereas someone making his accounts to 30 April 2020 has his profits taxed in 2020/21. From 2023/24, it is proposed that everyone will uses a tax year basis, i.e.: as if their accounts were made to 31 March or 5 April annually (HMRC will treat these as coterminous). Any other year-end will be apportioned accordingly – if necessary, filing an estimated Tax Return until your second accounting period has finished. Example: 30 September annual accounting would need 6 months of 30/9/27 and 6 months of 30/9/28 accounts to form the 2027/28 assessment. The 2023/24 tax year will be a transition year. Whilst these rules are yet to be finalised, if you are not already on a 31 March or 5 April basis, it is expected that a merging of the old and new system will occur. Example: a 30 September year end would have 18 months of profit assessed in the 2023/24 tax year (12 months to 30/9/23 plus 6 months to 5 April 2024) but with the ability to elect to spread the additional tax due across 5 years. You can use any Overlap Relief brought forward. As you are effectively going to be forced to change when your profits are assessed in the next couple of years, if you use anything other than 5 April/31 March accounting, why not consider changing your yearend when you choose, instead of when HMRC dictates. Then it is you who chooses which profits are merged. Changing the year-end is complicated and there is no one-rule-fits-all. There can be costs involved and you would not be allowed to spread any additional tax across five years either. However, with an enforced change coming, you have the opportunity to make a change when you want to and potentially have less tax assessed.

Being an electrician Kevin has also found his work has become much easier as trying to get through trap doors and working in roof spaces was a challenge at times. Julie Liddiard who runs the Leiston group says “I am incredibly proud of Kevin. He has done and continues to do so well. We are all in awe of his transformation and he has become so much healthier and happier and also a very important member of the group. His motivation is an inspiration and he has transformed from a member who had very low esteem to a far more confident member. I couldn’t be prouder of what Kevin has achieved.”

He also found that Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan based on the science of satiety and energy density was easy to follow and maintain long term. Kevin said “Not only am I eating more and not feeling deprived my whole attitude to food has changed and am enjoying breakfast which I never used to have.” Kevin now makes wise choices when he is out with friends or going to restaurants or parties using the flexibility of Food Optimising. As the weight came off Kevin found that he had more energy and his health and fitness improved considerably. Slimming World’s Body Magic Activity programme has helped Kevin become more active. Since joining Slimming World in Leiston on 2nd September 2021 Kevin Hall has proved that Slimming World works just as well for men as women. Like many men Kevin initially thought that Slimming Clubs were aimed at Women and assumed the focus would be on diet food. However with a 12 week referral from Suffolk One Life, Kevin decided to give it a try. He was fed up being the size he was and worrying about the consequences and embarrassed about the possibility of having to get a seat belt extension for his car or van or when going on a plane. He was suffering with high blood pressure and cholesterol, sleep apnoea and heart palpitations and wanted to do something about his weight rather than be forced down a route of medication which he has successfully managed to avoid. has worked incredibly hard, especially over the past two years, keeping our iconic venue open and to offer customers, old and new, the bespoke theatre experience to which Leiston
Film Theatre is renowned for.” said Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Clerk, Caroline Rinder. It hasn’t all been highs though and in recent times Wayne has had serious concerns for the future of the Film Theatre. “The Covid pandemic brought great sadness and uncertainty to all of us at the Film Theatre and as time slowly past and the venue sat dark and empty, I had genuine concerns whether we could ever bounce back. Thankfully, our wonderful customers adore our venue and donated £10,000 during lockdown to enable us to keep going and are now slowly returning. Week by week, we welcome familiar faces back and a whole new family of followers who are now discovering the delights of visiting our fabulous Film Theatre” he said. Wayne recently celebrated his 30th anniversary, with a screening of one of his favourite films - the 1957 Ealing classic, The Smallest Show on Earth (U), with donations donated to the Leiston Film Theatre Support Club, towards their ongoing fund raising to further enhance Suffolk’s oldest cinema. And what is next for Wayne and the Film Theatre? His lips are sealed, but he certainly has something in mind and like any great film, reminds us that anything is possible.

New sensory backpacks to broaden young visitor's experience Woodbridge Tide Mill is welcoming more and more children and families these days but sometimes when it's busy, it may be an overwhelming or even stressful experience for individuals with sensory processing disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Heather Sheehan (the Tide Mills Education Lead) says: "We are delighted to announce that we now have sensory backpacks. The backpacks are designed to make a visit more accessible

ear defenders (for if the Mill machinery gets too noisy), sunglasses (for if the light gets too much), a torch (for those gloomy museum corners and to see our machinery in a little more detail), a 'feelings indicator' (if you're too shy to express yourself), a magnifying glass (to help find those pesky hidden mice), a sensory map (to show you where the noisy and quiet areas of the museum are) and the museum trail (to keep you busy on your visit and which you can then take home with you).
Sensory backpacks like this are a powerful calming tool for children with sensory or additional needs. Woodbridge Tide Mill Charitable Trust Chairman, John Carrington added: "I'd like to thank our education lead, Heather Sheehan, the East of England Coop as sponsor and our volunteers for researching and creating this sensory backpack. The charity wishes to look after its visitors and meet as many of their needs as it can. This is another useful development towards that goal."

part of a special weekend of celebratory events taking place in Saxmundham. The grand opening will coincide with the 750th anniversary of the town’s market charter and will be presided over by none other than King Henry III. And everyone is invited to the celebrations. Sporting first class facilities for the people of Saxmundham and the local area, the brand new centre has a large hall which can hold almost 200 people, a semi commercial fully fitted kitchen capable of serving up the most sumptuous medieval feast, small and large meeting/conference rooms and a separate cabin which is currently used by the Foodbank. A super large car park and electrical car charging points finish off a magnificent asset and meeting venue for the town. The centre is administered by The Saxmundham & District CIC; a not for profit social enterprise run by a small group of local volunteers. Stephen Palmer, Chair of SADCIC, said.. “Never before has Saxmundham had its very own community centre and we are all extremely proud of the outstanding achievements working in collaboration with other agencies. Saxmundham residents will know that the site was formerly the County Buildings and Suffolk CC remain the overall site owner. I am extremely grateful to Suffolk CC and our County Councillor, Richard Smith for all the help and assistance they have given to setting up the new Community Centre.” “We moved our operations
from temporary accommodation in Seaman Avenue back in November and since opening, the number of clubs and societies using the facilities has mushroomed. Users range from baby and infant classes, Rainbows, Brownies & Guides, Yoga classes, Pilates, Dancing & Singing classes, The horticultural Society, Royal British legion and U3A to name but a few. The Rotary Club run a highly popular pop up Café on a Wednesday under the Smile Café banner. We are now taking bookings for children’s party events. Please check out our website at www. fromuscentre.org.uk for all the latest information.” King Henry III will officially mark the opening at 2 pm which will be followed by an afternoon of free events and demonstrations by some of our users. The Smile Café will be serving refreshments all afternoon. An event not to be missed so make a note in your diary and we look forward to welcoming you all to your new community centre – The Fromus Centre.

Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, 1897, Star Hotel, Gosford Road (image courtesy of Beccles and District Museum)
Beccles Jubilee Beccles will be celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in a variety of ways over the Platinum Jubilee weekend. In keeping with its long tradition of marking Jubilees, which goes back to at least 1810 when the Corporation of the Fen decided to spend £50 (more than £4,000 in today's money) in regaling the 'Poor of this Parish' to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of George III. Jubilee celebrations took on larger dimensions in the reign of Queen Victoria; and permanent memorials were created. In 1887, 400 poor and aged persons were given a sit-down dinner, consisting of meat, bread and plum pudding, but they had to bring their own cutlery! Athletic
sports took place on the Common. The great stained-glass east window of St. Michael's Church was created to commemorate the Jubilee and contributions from grateful townsfolk also paid for the extension of the hospital (then in Fair Close). A new ward was added, bringing the accommodation to 15 beds and three cots. In 1897, the Queen celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. Much debate (including at two public meetings) took place in the town over how the milestone should be marked in a tangible form. Eventually, it was decided to build a home for the town's nurse, even though a vote had been in favour of a new public hall. Tea was provided for
2,000 children on the Common, and various games and sports took place. At 9pm, a procession of cyclists in fancy dress paraded through the decorated streets, one lad dressed as Queen Victoria graciously acknowledging the cheering of hundreds of spectators. In 1935, for George V's Silver Jubilee a grand carnival processed from Priory Road to the Common via a very circuitous route through the town. Events for children centred on the Caxton Recreation Ground. Adults could dance at the Public Hall from 9pm and the Scouts lit their beacon at 10pm on the Common where they were joined by the Guides around a campfire for community singing. Many Beccles residents will
remember the celebrations for the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. Events included the grand fête provided by the Sports Development Council at Beef Meadow, the Fire Brigade's open day and disco and the Regal Theatre's 'all-star variety show'. Some Beccles householders decorated their properties extensively. The gates to The Avenue from The Common were renovated (and will be refurbished again in 2022). More information about how Beccles celebrated Jubilees will be available in an exhibition at St. Michael's Church over the Jubilee Weekend. Barry Darch, Beccles and District Museum

The land has a long legacy of being used by the community as it was the playing field to Reydon High School until the school closed in 1990. After the formation of Reydon Playing Fields Charity in 2013 additional land was purchased and work on the pavilion began in 2016. Learning to ring is tricky, about as hard as learning to drive a car, with some light to moderate physical exercise thrown in, but new ringers are quickly seduced by the combination of intellectual and physical challenges and the nationwide camaraderie: You can turn up at almost any tower in the country with bells, announce you are a ringer, and you'll get to join in. One of the features of national celebrations in England is the sound of church bells ringing out across town and country. The bellringers in the Blyth Valley are aiming to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee by manning all seven churches in the Blyth Valley Team on the anniversary of the coronation, although Halesworth will be the day after as we need to call in reinforcements. The provisional timetable is as follows: Blythburgh 10:15am-10:45am (not strictly Blyth Valley but close) Wenhaston 11am-11:30am Bramfield 11:45am-12:15pm Heveningham 2:15pm-2:45pm Huntingfield 3pm-3:30pm Wissett 4pm-4:30pm Chediston 7:30pm-8:30pm The timing of ringing on 3rd June at Halesworth has yet to be confirmed, but you won't miss it if you live anywhere near St. Mary's Church! The ringing at Chediston and Halesworth will be special performances (quarter peals) that involve lots of concentration for 45 minutes' non-stop ringing, but anyone is very welcome to come and watch us close up at the other towers, and there will be someone on hand to explain what is going on and answer questions. again celebrating the joys of Suffolk, with new contributions from the likes of Ralph Fiennes, Craig Brown, Robin Robertson, Lucy Hughes Hallett as well as previously published items from much admired writers such as Robert MacFarlane, Penelope Fitzgerald, Roger Deakin, Melissa Harrison and many others. The 'New Suffolk Garland' is available to purchase from The Halesworth Bookshop and will give you the chance to enter our free draw to win a used copy of the original 1961 book. This will be drawn on Friday 10th June at a promotional event starting at 7pm in the bookshop. Independent Bookshop Week from 18th-25th June will celebrate the work of Indie bookshops across the country and the work they do to promote books and authors. Look out for many promotional offers, special discounts, events and signed copies. During this celebratory week as a thank you to our customers, we'll be offering the chance to enjoy a coffee while browsing and shopping. There will be no charge for this but donations to our School's Fund would be greatly appreciated.
Furthermore, when you spend £25 during the week you will receive a voucher to redeem online to get a High Five £5 book token to spend. There will also be double points on our loyalty card scheme - 2 stamps instead of 1 for every book over £7.99. Local crime writer, Lesley Kara, will be in the shop at 7pm on Friday 24th June to talk about her 4th book entitled 'The Apartment Upstairs'. Looking ahead to July, local author Polly Crosby will be in the shop on Friday 8th July at 7pm promoting the paperback release of 'The Unravelling' an atmospheric and deeply emotional book.
media and show the world the joys of re-homing a mature moggy. Tilly (pictured) is just one of a number of mature cats in the care of Framlingham and Saxmundham CP at the moment, who are looking for somewhere to spend the rest of their lives. Looking for a home: The beautiful long-haired lady pictured is Tilly, who is about nine years old. She takes a while to gain her confidence with new people, but she really does love a proper cuddle. Tilly does not like dogs and would be best suited in a quiet adult only home with no other pets. If you could offer Tilly the quiet, loving home she needs, please contact us. Happy birthday Joan!
Framlingham & Saxmundham Cats Protection news #MatureMoggiesDay - 16th June - Celebrating our senior 'kitizens'. Did you know that older cats can take over three times longer to find new adopted homes than younger cats? Cats Protection (CP) is on a mission to change this by holding a day of celebration on June 16th in honour of mature moggies who are often rather young at heart. CP would like you to take to social media in your masses using the hashtag #MatureMoggiesDay to show appreciation for cats who have a lifetime of experience and still so much love to give. They may be a little calmer and their meows might have more of a gravelly tone, but mature cats make ideal companions. Their warmth, kindness and head nuzzles help lift any day and who says that older moggies don't like getting into mischief? CP would love you to share your stories on 16th June! On May 4th 2022, we celebrated Joan Morley's 100th birthday. She had a lovely day with family, friends and the staff at Highfield. Joan would like to thank everyone who came and made it special. HRH Queen Elizabeth II also sent her best wishes to Joan. Money has been donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance in Joan's wishes as it's a charity close to her heart.

With days lengthening and weather improving, things are going well at Halesworth Bookshop and we're delighted to be welcoming back authors for signing sessions and talks in the shop. To celebrate the Queen's Jubilee, children are welcome to the bookshop on Saturday 3rd June from 10:30am-noon to make and decorate a crown which they can wear to the town's picnic in the park later that day. In the afternoon, the bookshop will be joining forces with The Feedbarn to offer light refreshments from 3pm to their customers who supported both establishments throughout the long running saga of the fire and scaffolding! Back in 1961, HRH Queen Elizabeth II made a Royal Progress through Suffolk - the first official visit to the county since Queen Elizabeth I some 400 years previously. To mark that occasion, a book titled 'A Suffolk Garland for The Queen' was produced celebrating the miscellany of Suffolk life with letters, scenes, sketches and photographs. Now to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, there's a new book 'A New Suffolk Garland',

The Bell Hotel in Saxmundham has hired renowned local chef, Garry Cook, as Head Chef to spearhead the exciting food offering at the newly refurbished hotel - due to reopen in Summer 2022. Garry (who has worked with some of the biggest names in the food industry) has worked in the hospitality industry for over thirty years and has a wealth of experience under his belt, including working as Chef Patron at The Crown Inn at Snape. He has also worked at Hanbury Manor and his own restaurant,152 in Aldeburgh - all of which have given him the chance to hone his skills and develop an innovative approach to cooking. "I'm thrilled to be joining such a forward-thinking team at The Bell Hotel," says Garry. "I love this region - the food culture is so rich here, I'm really looking forward to introducing some new ideas. Whether you're at the hotel as a foodie, rambler or guest, I promise a menu that will delight, astound and leave guests with a big smile on their face." "We are genuinely excited to bring Chef Garry Cook aboard", explains Ashley Beale, General Manager of The Bell Hotel. "His passion for food and drink, as well as his love of Suffolk, made him the perfect fit for our team. Garry promises to deliver a perfect blend of tradition and modernity, our customers are going to love him and what he
creates for them." The Bell Hotel plans to offer guests two dining spaces; a classic, elegant dining room for lunch and dinner, and a more relaxed dining experience, courtesy of the Coast Lounge and River Bar.

The Framlingham Fire Service (complete with fire engine) will be in attendance and there will be a variety of craft, tombola and games stalls. Music will be provided on a large stage with a professional sound system and performing live will be The Glass Thistles, Harry Issac Presley and the HIP operation, Icarus, The Pop Chorus and a Brass Band. We are very grateful to our sponsors: Bruce Hinton, Clarke and Simpson, Hudson's Electrical, F Master Ltd, Co-op, DClllr Maurice Cook and DCllr Lydia Freeman, CCllr Stephen Burroughes, Framlingham Castle and all our supporters and helpers. All proceeds will be split between The Brain Tumour Charity and a new piece of play equipment for the Pageant Field play area. Just for background information, the reason for the Brain Tumour Charity is that I have just completed six weeks of radiotherapy for a meningioma brain tumour, hopefully successfully but I won't know the results until April when I see the Oncologist after my next MRI but fingers crossed! Hope to see you there. Eileen A Coe and the POP Team: Rachel, Hollie, Steve and Marion
Founded in 1982, the u3a is a UK-wide movement of locallyrun interest groups. There are over one thousand u3as, with over 450,000 members, and it is open to anyone no longer in full-time work. There are no entry qualifications, no barriers to joining and lots of activities to get involved in. New members are welcome with the expectation that they will participate and contribute to activities. Of the 160+ interest groups in u3a East Suffolk many have recently resumed face to face meetings, although some remain online. And so, members are continuing to learn about and discuss the arts, history, science, foreign language and more. They are out walking, dining, quizzing and visiting gardens and other sites of interest. A key (and much-loved) part of u3a's offering is the regular speaker programme, with talks held at four venues across East Suffolk. The programme restarts in September 2022, after our summer recess.

Wickham Market Flower Club update worthy cause. We have an outing arranged to Ingatestone Hall on Friday 22nd July. This is open to friends and family. The price of £45 includes the cost of the coach, entrance to the event and a two-course meal at Blakenham Chequers on the way home along with all gratuities. Other notices were on our notice board. June then introduced us to our demonstrator for the evening, Nick Grounds, who with the typical auctioneers voice we know him for, loudly wished us all a happy birthday. And so the absolute magic began. With his incredible love, joy and passion for all natural beauty, Nick started to create an explosion on the stage. "Valse des Fleurs" or as we were to learn "The Waltz of the Flowers". With each of the arrangements Nick created, we were drawn into his world of natural beauty. All things from a small un-interesting milk bottle to a Mrs Patmore style Soup Terrine, (minus the lid of course), Elderwood stumps were filled with a variety of foliage and glorious flowers as we were told stories of his Grandmother Twanky and his usage of the new ecological Floral Foam. We learned about his "Scary Shed", the 25 year old wedding bouquet of his sisters firmly ensconced in the downstairs loo on the window ledge, even surviving a move when it maybe would

Nick delighted us with the beautiful colours of Gerbera, Roses, Orange Tulips, Aliums, Carnations, Freesia's, Ranunculus, Viburnum, Chrysanthemum and Lillies. Report for our Emerald Celebration Meeting, Thursday 28th April, 2022. Demonstrator Nick Grounds: "Valse des Fleurs". When this appeared on our programme information, I for one, had no idea what this meant and what the implications might be. I didn't have long to wait, unlike the celebration of our Emerald Anniversary, which should have happened last year. No, we didn't forget, it's just that Covid got in the way. Our Chairman June welcomed Gloria Goodley, our Area Vice Chairman, members from Woodbridge, Aldeburgh and Framlingham, our own Wickham Market club members, guests and friends to the meeting. It was lovely to see the hall fill up with expectant happy faces. She also welcomed our first responder, Mike who was in attendance for the evening. NOTICES: We are holding a fashion show along with "Inspirations" on May 13th in the Village Hall. It's to raise money for the Chairmans chosen charity, The Wickham Market First Responders. Tickets are £5 each and are available from both the Inspirations shop and from Sue on 07786 942450. There will be 20% discount available on the night and 10% vouchers for use in the shop later. There will also be refreshments and a raffle plus accompanying stalls. Do come along and support this
