AFFORDABLE QUALITY

Aldeburgh Carnival is happening on August 17th19th, save the days for 'Anything 80'!

Our beautiful Carnival Queen Minnie, her attendants Emily and Bella, Aldeburgh's Mayor T-J Haworth-Culf, and the whole volunteer Carnival Committee really look forward to welcoming you to the town for Carnival weekend. So, parade, take part, volunteer, wear those shoulder pads with pride, or dress in neon! 'Anything 80' is the theme and we are relying on you to make the 80th Carnival the best so far, and most importantly let's have some fun!

The 'when, where, how and who' of the three-day celebration can be found in our program, which will be available very shortly. Information on our

crafts and food mini village, giant kites, music, silent auction, now legendary Sunday 10K Mini-Marathon, and of course the Carnival Procession on Monday, dancing in the street, lantern procession, fireworks, along with the traditional events that the Carnival is known for. Buying a programme helps the Carnival's funds, and makes a great souvenir to remember your time here celebrating Aldeburgh's amazing 80th Carnival.

Our grateful thanks go to the amazingly generous sponsors we have this year. Without them, the traditional elements of the Carnival weekend simply couldn't happen. As the weekend of the 80th Aldeburgh Carnival draws ever closer, we are very excited to have such an unbelievable number of prizes for the Silent Auction, all donated by local businesses and individuals. You can have a look at our Website www.aldeburghcarnival.com to see the full details of what is on

offer, keep looking though, as more and more offers could be added as carnival approaches!

A very small selection of the varied goodies are: A festive get-away cruise, dinners for four, dinners for two, breakfasts, lunches, cream teas, afternoon teas, an 18-hole round of golf, a wicker picnic hamper for humans, a not-for-humans doggy hamper, painting lessons, gift vouchers and gift sets, fine wine and fine experiences. This year for the first time we have a "Kiddies Korner" selection of lots, especially donated for children to enjoy. Something for everyone, perhaps you have someone who has a celebration coming up? A birthday, or you'd just like a treat yourself? Bid for the offer of your choice. The Silent Auction site will be LIVE from midnight on July 13th, online at: www. shorturl.at/6fEkv up to 2pm on August 18th, when the auction goes "live" on the seafront for one hour. Keep an eye on the bidding

and increase your offer if it has been topped, otherwise you will lose the deal! Highest bid by 3pm on August 18th wins! Come and see us before then on August 17th and 18th, where you can take a look at the various lots and sign up in person, on the Moot Green facing the sea.

From August 9th, you can buy specially commissioned Carnival merchandise and lanterns from our pop-up shop at 114 High Street. By doing this, taking part in the Carnival Draw (from the draw table outside Riley and Riley

from August 3rd), using the secure Carnival car park, donating your spare change and giving generously to the Carnival's contactless pay stations on the day or by the QR code, you help to ensure that next year's carnival thrives, and we can continue to give to good local causes. As always, you can find us on the Carnival website (www. aldeburghcarnival.com ), follow us on Instagram, on 'X' or Facebook and see us on YouTube. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Did you know you can advertise in our online business directory from just £48+vat per year? That’s less than 93p+vat per week! We have two options to help drive traffic to your website - or to act as a mini website to give you some greater online presence!

The Pirate Radio Revolution: A nostalgic look back at the 60s with Charles Wright and Brian Nichols

If you didn't manage to see the recent talk titled 'The Pirate Radio Revolution of the 60s', then you missed a treat!

40 members and visitors were joined by several more online to hear Charles Wright and Brian Nichols tell the June meeting of the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group (AVSFHG). Several of the AVSFHG's committee dressed up for the occasion and one had brought along a transistor radio made locally by Pye in Yoxford.

Charles explained that he and a friend Tom Day built a radio station in his bedroom in Trimley when he was just 15 years old. He called it Radio Walthamstow

to confuse the authorities with their illicit broadcasting which in reality only went a few hundred yards.

I won't readily forget the image of Charles in a cupboard lined with empty egg boxes to act as sound proofing (pictured above)!

Charles and Brian demonstrated effectively and comically why a revolution was needed on the radio, because the BBC played "nice music and nice serials" but they just weren't playing popular music. Although a latecomer to the 1960s, I'd heard of some of the offshore Radio Stations such as Radio Luxemburg and Radio Caroline, but not of the other

stations that were mentioned, such as Radio Veronica (Dutch) and Radio Mercur (Scandinavian).

This year celebrates the 60th anniversary of Radio Caroline and it was interesting to note that the station was initially moored off the Felixstowe coast. Charles' late brother (Andy Wright) shot cine footage of a visit to see Radio Caroline where the famous radio DJs (disc jockeys) came out on deck and introduced themselves because no-one actually knew what they looked like!

Caroline was on air from 6am to 6pm daily and the first record that was played by DJ Christopher Moore was 'Not Fade Away' by the Rolling Stones: "I'm gonna

tell you how it's gonna be, you're gonna give your love to me."

Many other DJs were mentioned (including Tony Blackburn), but the one that I associate the most with the 60s was that of Simon Dee (pictured above). He joined Radio Caroline in March 1964, though I remember him later as the TV host of 'Juke Box Jury'.

Though offshore radio became illegal, Radio Caroline carried on broadcasting until 1991 when it was forced to dock after running aground. Radio Caroline now broadcasts legally.

Charles and Brian recounted the history of Caroline in detail but also included information about other offshore radio such Radio London, Radio Scarborough and Radio Northsea International. With a mix of rare cine footage, photographs, music and jingles we were all able to easily reminisce about radio in the 1960s and 70s.

If this has whetted your appetite and you would like to know more, why not visit the Radio Caroline Exhibition at the Felixstowe Museum. www.felixstowemuseum.org

U3A is an organisation for the older (mostly retired) members of the community, providing opportunities to learn, to keep active, to have fun and to make new friends. Well over 2,200 people in East Suffolk have already discovered that there's plenty more to later life than they ever imagined.

U3A's motto is learn, laugh, live and there's no better way to describe what it's about, new interests, new challenges and new friends.

East Suffolk's branch is particularly active, and its members are bursting with ideas, enthusiasm and keen to make the most of later life. They enjoy walks, quizzes, dining out, visiting gardens or churches, discussing architecture, the arts,

current affairs and much more. Alongside approximately 150 different local activities, there's a varied programme of talks held at different venues in East Suffolk. The 2024/2025 schedule begins with a talk from Charlie Haylock, voice coach to actors in the Sutton Hoo based film, The Dig. Followed in October by talks about Livelihood Creation in Zambia (the work of Tools with a Mission), Life on Land and Offshore in Borneo and The Story of Silk. Full up-to-date information is available on: www.U3A eastsuffolk.org.uk. New members are welcome, with the expectation that they will contribute to the success of the group. Membership is on an annual basis, costs less than £20 for a full year and gives members access to all the organisation's many activities, subject to availability.

Woodbridge Cruising Club

The club's summer cruises are underway now, and members are enjoying the well-planned voyages to familiar and new destinations.

The Walton Backwaters cruise (organised by Ross and Jane) was an enjoyable sail to Titmarsh, and on-shore activities, including a visit to the East Coast Distillery, were a pleasant treat. Fair winds and sunshine was enjoyed by those attending the Burnham cruise, organised by John and Dee, visiting Fambridge and Brightlingsea as well.

Future cruises eagerly awaited are Lowestoft and Southwold, organised by Graham and led by Bram, Walton Pond, led by Don and Maggie, and (the perennial favourite) the Blackwater cruise with cruise leader Andy. For all yacht and motorboat owners

cruising in company is one of the best reasons to join the club. Other club members voyage to the Scottish Highlands and Islands, or further afield to Europe, to the Baltic, France or Greece. The club bar is the ideal place to met up after these cruises to exchange stories, and useful hints as to the best marinas and passage planning.

Members are looking forward to the August Bank Holiday barbecue in the pleasant garden of the riverside club house, where the delicious home-made puddings are always a highlight. If you have a genuine interest in sailing and the sea, have a look at our programme of maritime related events on: www.woodbridgecruisingclub. org. New members are always welcome.

PETER’S PEST CONTROL

40 years at Carlton Park

It's now 40 years since Saxmundham Cricket Club moved from Benhall to Carlton Park. This felt like the right time to celebrate given the last few years have been a struggle to keep the club going.

To celebrate, a T20 match was arranged against our friends The Halesworth Pumas.

Batting first, the Pumas made 105 from their 20 overs. Stuart Goddard and Ray Halls opened the reply for Saxmundham and both retired having reached 26 each, a few wkts fell before Tom Feveyear and Gary Butler saw Saxmundham home with a couple of balls to spare.

Afterwards, everyone reverted back to The Poachers where fun was had and over £250 was raised for club funds through a prize draw and an auction for a meal voucher kindly donated by our

sponsors The Poachers Pocket. The summer weather continues to be changeable at best, having lost one match recently to rain and one match interrupted many times. Wins are hard to come by at the moment but games have been played in the right spirit while we have remained competitive.

I would also like to welcome Jack Iveson and Jack Waring to the club, both young men who are destined to have good careers within the game.

We have now passed the halfway point with only six games remaining, so let's hope for sunny days and hard tracks and more clubs providing teas.

It was sad to see Jimmy Anderson play his last test for England but we may have a ready made replacement in Gus Atkinson. Thanks for the memories Jimmy.

Cat sculpture auction to support Cats Protection

Some time ago, the Anglia Coastal branch of Cats Protection re-homed two ginger cats, when a lovely lady sadly passed away.

The lady had been an avid collector of beautiful cat sculptures by Winstanley, Susie Marsh and other artists. In gratitude for finding his daughters beloved ginger cats new homes, her father donated her impressive collection of sculptures to raise money for the Cats Protection.

We're thrilled to announce that all of these gorgeous sculptures will be on display between August 8th and September 8th, and will be available to purchase at Merlina-Arts, Earsham Heritage Mill, Church Road, Earsham, Bungay, NR35 2TQ. MerlinaArts is open from Thursday to Sunday between 10am-2pm.

So, please do take the time to go along and view these beautiful sculptures, you might see one that you like!

Blooming August

Top gardening tips

As

so ensure your plants stay hydrated. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation. Focus on the base of plants to direct moisture to the roots, and consider using mulch to retain soil moisture.

Deadhead & Prune Deadhead spent flowers. This not only tidies up plants but also encourages further blooming. Prune shrubs and hedges, but

avoid trimming spring-flowering shrubs as this can affect next year's blooms.

Harvest & Enjoy August is a bountiful month for harvesting. Pick tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and other vegetables regularly to encourage further production. Herbs are at their peak now, so cut and dry or freeze them to enjoy throughout the year.

Autumn Planting

It's not too late to plant for autumn colour. Consider adding Chrysanthemums, Asters, and Autumn Crocuses to your garden. Start sowing hardy annuals and biennials like Wallflowers and Sweet Williams for early spring flowers next year.

Care for the Lawn

Keep your lawn healthy by mowing regularly, but raise the

cutting height to help the grass withstand dry conditions. If the weather is particularly dry, leave the clippings on the lawn to help retain moisture.

Keep Pests at Bay Watch out for pests like aphids and slugs, which can be particularly troublesome in August. Use organic methods like introducing beneficial insects or using natural deterrents to keep your garden eco-friendly. Enjoy! Finally, take time to sit back and enjoy your garden! August is a wonderful month to host garden parties or simply relax amidst the beauty you've nurtured. By following these tips, your garden can remain a vibrant and flourishing haven throughout August and beyond. Happy gardening!

Bungay Camera Club members face new three-theme challenge

The members of Bungay Camera Club were faced with a new challenge for their latest evening of competition. The challenge was to submit three individual images for three different themes. Usually, there's a single theme covered by a colour and a mono print. Plus a projected digital image (PDI).

It was thought that widening the choice of topics would encourage more scope for creativity and allow newer club members to get involved with producing images to put forward into a competition format.

The three themes were: 'A book' (coloured prints), 'Frozen in time' (mono prints) and 'On a small scale' (PDI's).

The judge for the competition was Rob Howarth LRPS, from Lowestoft and he had the task of scoring, out of 20 points, the many and varied images.

Before starting his critique and awarding points, Mr Howarth commented: ''I'm very pleased

to be returning to Bungay Camera Club as it's always an interesting evening seeing the images presented. Not only will I be scoring the image, but I'll be making observations on the way the print is mounted, as this can sometimes affect the way an image is viewed. Although, this will not affect the mark given to the image itself.''

Mr Howarth then began to give his remarks and observations about the colour and mono prints before giving their awarded scores. Following a break for refreshments, Mr Howarth resumed his judging and scoring for the PDI images. After receiving a show of thanks from the club Chairperson Sue Grief LRPS, Mr Howarth replied that: "The standard of images on show was high and it was great to see that a lot of creativity and thought had gone into producing the prints and PDI's. It's been another enjoyable evening spent with Bungay

Financial focus on... Dying without a Will

Research indicates that over half of the adult population in the UK do not have a valid Will (according to multiple sources). This means that when they die, their assets are distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules which can cause all manner of problems if assets are sent to undeserving members of a family or, for example, a substantial inheritance is left to teenage adults without any control.

Assuming you live in England or Wales, if you die Intestate, the current rules are:

• Married/civil partnership with no children: Your spouse receives everything.

• Married/civil partnership with children: Your spouse receives your personal assets and the first £322,000 in value. The remainder is split equally between your spouse and your children (including illegitimate and adopted but not stepchildren). It becomes more complicated if you are neither married or in a civil partnership. Now, in order of set off, your assets go absolutely to your children and then to your living parents (equally), before your siblings are considered as beneficiaries. If the assets still cannot be distributed, the rules then send your assets to your living grandparents and then to your aunts and uncles. (If either your children, siblings or aunts and uncles have already died but have themselves left beneficiaries, those beneficiaries can stand in their stead). Ultimately, if no beneficiaries can be found, your estate goes to the Crown. (The government claims thousands of

such cases each year). If your assets to pass to a minor, the government will hold them in trust until they reach age 18 whereupon their inheritance is released to them without any controls, whether or not they are financially mature enough to handle the responsibility.

Even without considering whether tax planning might be useful, a simple Will can prevent your assets going where they shouldn't. With modern lives being a lot more complicated than the simple old-fashioned family unit, having a Will has never been more important and can save so many problems.

For Will preparation, whilst not legally obligatory, is recommended that you should contact a suitably qualified solicitor or Will preparer. For inheritance tax advice, you should speak to a suitably qualified tax professional.

Hope this helps. For further information, please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) via email: robin.beadle@ensors.co.uk.

Disclaimer: Specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.

Camera Club and I look forward to visiting again."

The club members scoring 1st place (marks of 20 points) and 2nd place (marks of 19 points) were:

Joint 1st place was won by Jim Moore with 'Murder In Mind' and Mark Gray with 'Cook Book'. Joint 2nd place was won by Andy Wilson with 'A Clockwork Orange', Ian Anderson with 'The Sea The Sea' and Peter Nixon with 'I'll Just Get My Shell Suit and Trainers'.

Mono prints: Frozen In Time

Joint 1st place was won by Peter Nixon with 'Freeze FrameBattling The Beast' (pictured above) and Andy Wilson with 'Iced Up at 18:54:41'. Joint 2nd place was won by Jim Moore with 'What's The Time, Dandelion', David Penrose with 'Frozen In The Glacier', Richard Roberts with 'Frozen In Time' and Ian Anderson with 'Moment Of Impact'.

Halesworth Swifts group were very pleased to have the help of local building company Kerslake to help install new boxes at height. Toby Kerslake and Les Hambling made short work of putting up two boxes in the town. We hope that these will be used by swifts in years to come. Despite the cool rainy weather, there have been a good number of swifts around Halesworth this season. The young will have fledged by early August and

will be taking to the skies over Halesworth. Once the fledglings leave the nest, they won't land for two to three years as they eat and sleep on the wing. In July, Halesworth Swifts were pleased to be able to deliver a fledgling that fell out of its nest in Chediston Street to the Wildlife Lounge in Thetford. It was a well-developed youngster and, with expert care, this little bird will soon be flying off to Africa.

Swifts migrate to the Congo in Equatorial Africa for the winter and return in early May to breed in England. That is a round trip of 8,000 miles and we hope that you agree swifts are miraculous birds that we can be proud to help.

Charity donations from RAOB

The Britannia Lodge RAOB (Buffs) had a special evening to help local charities recently.

Two representatives from five organisations were invited into the Caxton Club room after a shortened Lodge meeting and were presented with cheques of £300 each. They thanked the brothers of the Lodge and explained how the money will benefit them.

The rest of the evening was enjoyed with social chat, refreshments and a raffle (to add more money to the Charity Fund for the future).

The beneficiaries were: BACT (Community Transport for Waveney & South Norfolk), The May Centre, Beccles Salvation Army, St. Luke's Lunch Club and Beccles Men's Shed. Bro Graham Rudd ROH, City Secretary

Pink Ladies' Tractor Road Run 2024

A bumper number of ladies took part in this year's Pink Ladies' Tractor Road Run to mark the 20th run of this iconic event.

On Sunday 7th July, a spectacular convoy of more than 190 tractors swathed in pink travelled a 20-mile route through south Norfolk and north Suffolk.

Thousands of people packed the route in support, while family and friends joined the ladies at a picnic lunch in sunshine and then rain at Gawdy Hall meadow just outside Harleston.

Organiser Annie Chapman,

who was driving one of the oldest tractors on the run (a 1950 David Brown Cropmaster) said: "How lucky were we! We managed to avoid the worst of the weather both on the outward journey and, almost, on the way back! Apart from the amazing support for the nearly 200 ladies around the 20-mile route, our wonderful town of Harleston was almost overwhelming. We were very appreciative of the safety measures put in place by TMO Highways, (whose staff gave their time free) as the pavements and marketplace were packed with

News from Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats Protection

It was great to see the many visitors to our stalls at the Woodbridge Regatta on a chilly day in June and at Southwold Street Festival on a sunnier day! Thank you all for your support. We look forward to seeing you at the Framlingham Country Show on August 17th and 18th.

Thinking of giving a cat a home? Getting a cat can be both exciting and daunting, leaving a lot to think about. From kitting out your home ready for your new arrival, to keeping your cat safe. All cats have different personalities that make them the perfect pet for the right home. For some, adopting a kitten is ideal but an older cat might be a great option for a quieter household. Cats with disabilities make great companions too, especially as indoor pets. At Fram & Sax, we make every effort to ensure a great match for each adopted cat! When the cat first arrives,

you'll need to help settle them into their new home. A change of environment can be stressful for a cat and it can take a while before they feel settled. Taking one step at a time is important; be patient and always work at the cat's pace when letting them adjust to their new setting.

As an owner, you have an obligation to ensure all your cat's welfare needs are met - from a suitable environment and diet, to the freedom to exhibit normal behaviour patterns. Also, from June 2024, by law, all pet cats in England must be microchipped before they reach the age of 20 weeks (this applies to indoor-only cats, too). You must also keep your contact details up to date on a DEFRA-approved microchipping database. Cats are naturally inquisitive animals and you will want to do all you can to protect against accidents. This includes providing appropriate health care

and safety, both inside and out. The average life expectancy of a cat is around 14 years, with many living well beyond this age. It's important to be able to assess your cat's quality of life to prevent suffering as they get older or become ill. If there comes a time when your cat is in continual pain, discomfort or distress, the most loving and courageous way you can show how much you care is to end their suffering. Making the decision to euthanise your much-loved pet is a difficult one and guidance from your vet will be invaluable at this stage. We're here to offer advice on everything from choosing the right cat, common health issues and when to say goodbye to your beloved companion. hundreds of enthusiastic wellwishers. What an emotional trip for so many of the lady drivers and, I know, many of the public watching. Thank you to everyone who made this event possibleand so spectacular!"

People turned out to cheer the ladies on along the route in towns, villages, lay-bys and gardens. Houses and businesses were bedecked in pink bunting, banners and flags and many supporters were dressed head-to-toe in pink.

The total raised from this year's event will be announced on September 6th, 2024.

Annie Chapman said: "As with any event of this size, it cannot be achieved without the support of many people. I'd like to thank everyone involved, all the drivers, all the people who lend tractors, the land-owners, the many marshals, collecting ladies and anyone else who helps to make this event happen, it's a large team effort!"

Pain de Compagne Pain de Compagne

- Cover the dough and leave for 30 minutes.

- After resting the dough add the salt then knead for 5 minutes to obtain moderate gluten development. You can check the strength of the dough by performing a 'window pane' test where you gently tease the dough apart to create a thin membrane.

- Place the dough in a covered bowl for 2 hours, stretching and folding it after 30 minutes and again on the hour (2 folds total) then leave it to rise for the remaining hour.

Ingredients: Pre-ferment

• 20g strong white bread flour

• 40g dark rye flour

• Pinch of active dried yeast

• Pinch of fine salt

• 45g cold water Bake day

• 320g strong white bread flour

• 40g dark rye flour

• ½ tsp active dried yeast

• 230g warm water

• 5g fine salt Method:

- A pre-ferment is a mini version of your main dough, quickly mixed the night before. This added fermentation time boosts the flavour of your dough, giving a delicious tangy taste to your loaf. Freshly milled Rye flour from Maple farm in Kelsale is perfect for this bread.

- The night before, mix together the pre-ferment ingredients, cover and leave ambient.

- The next day, weigh the flours into a bowl. In a separate bowl, stir the water into the preferment and add the yeast, stir to dissolve then combine with the flour until completely mixed.

- Keep your dough in a warm place, around 25°C.

- When your dough is slightly expanded in size, it's ready for shaping. Pre-shape the dough into a round (boule) and let it rest, covered, for 20 minutes then complete the final shaping as desired.

- Place the dough into a floured dough basket and prove for 1-2 hours more until it's jiggly when you gently shake the basket.

- Pre-heat your oven to 240°C/220°C fan, placing a heavy casserole pan with a lid inside. This is known as a Dutch oven and will make sure your loaf expands fully and forms a good crust.

- When your oven is ready, turn your dough out of the basket (so the bottom is now the top) onto some baking parchment and score the surface of your loaf with a sharp knife or lame.

- Carefully lift into the Dutch oven, placing the lid on, and bake for 25 minutes before removing the lid for the last 10-15 minutes of the bake.

- Your loaf's ready when the internal temperature is 97°C.

Suffolk Community Foundation is inviting eligible charitable and not-for-profit groups in East Suffolk to bid for a share of up to £23,000,000, following the opening of the Sizewell C Community Fund. Around £2,000,000 will be made available each year for the next 10 years. The money will be awarded to projects in the East Suffolk Council area that promote the economic, social or environmental wellbeing of the communities most impacted by the construction of Sizewell C, and which enhance people's quality of life.

a real and lasting difference. We are looking forward to using the extensive experience we have built up over the past 19 years to ensure it is put to the best possible use for local people." Grants will be decided by an awards panel made up of representatives from Suffolk Community Foundation, Suffolk County Council, East Suffolk Council and Sizewell C, as well as four independent members who have a close connection to the area. The panel will meet four times each year to award the money.

Melanie Craig (Chief Executive of Suffolk Community Foundation) said: "We're delighted to open the Sizewell C Community Fund, which will make a significant difference to our local communities over the coming decade. We will focus on using our expertise to make sure this money benefits those communities most where work is taking place for the Sizewell C project. This is an exciting opportunity which comes at a time when rising demand and reductions in central funding are placing charities and community groups under ever increasing pressure. The money therefore has the potential to make

Julia Pyke (Sizewell C Joint Managing Director) said: "The Sizewell C Community Fund is a wonderful way to ensure that local communities benefit from the Sizewell C project for years to come. It's a key part of the legacy we want to leave for East Suffolk. We're excited to see the many projects and initiatives that will benefit, and to see the impacts they'll have across our region." Halesworth Pumas Cricket

The biggest issues facing the Halesworth Pumas this season has been the weather, and whether we have enough players.

A season-ending injury to a stalwart, and a couple of players being unavailable for most of the season, left the selection thin in the ground.

New signings however have bolstered the team. Ex Middleton Captain and now Halesworth resident James Boone has come in and made an impact, alongside former Saxmundham protege Angus Ferguson, whilst new player Christopher Whymark recently made his way onto the field, and Gillinghams Russ Roberts has also joined the club.

So far, six games have seen three losses, two wins and a draw. The wins were at home to Thorpeness and Worlingworth, the draw, away at Worlingworth in an exciting match that nearly had a super over, it was decided the light wasn't fit for such things

and the teams shook hands. The losses, well, both friendlies against Rum Old Boys, as well as a narrow defeat away at Saxmundham on their celebration day (40 years playing at Carlton Park) were all good games too.

It's not been all doom and gloom though, the Jacket of Shame has been replaced with "Gloria the tabard of Shame" and a new voting system is now in place for such dubious honours. Special thanks to Rumburgh Buck and the Rumburgh grounds team for their continued efforts in keeping us going, and also to our new "official photographer" Craig Messenger, whom joined us last season for many games and has continued to do so this term. Our fixtures are available on our Facebook page, and we have about six to go, plus hopefully a charity day on the 1st September (watch this space). For now, all the best, Hit Out or Get Out

Leiston Town Bowls Club

Leiston Town Bowls Club beat Saxmundham Bowls Club on Monday 15th July evening, gaining 5n points. This ensured Leiston Town Bowls Club won the 2024 Saxmundham League for first time for several years. Proof that we are getting back to our correct standing. Our new shirts this season

Framlingham Hockey Club seeking new Head Coach

Framlingham Hockey Club

Our winter season will be starting in mid-September 2024 and runs to March/April 2025. We'll be offering training to U8s on Sundays, U12s and 13 plus/seniors on Wednesday evenings. The club consists of two ladies teams, junior girls and boys teams. All our league matches are played on a Saturday and our home matches are played at Framlingham College.

Head Senior Coach We're looking for a Head Senior Coach. Unfortunately, our Senior Coach is unable to take our senior ladies training this coming season due to his

new work commitments.

Basic details:

• Must have minimum EH Sessional Coaching qualification, first aid and Safeguarding certificates. For the right person, FHC would be happy to sponsor the coach to complete these qualifications if required.

• Could be a paid role.

Local brothers who raised £10k during dad's cancer battle finalists in GoCardless JustGiving Awards

Two young brothers who raised £10k during their dad's cancer battle are now finalists in the GoCardless JustGiving Awards.

Jake (aged nine) and Logan (aged seven) Croarkin came up with the idea to run 100km in 31 days after learning that their dad, Luke, had been diagnosed with leukaemia for the third time.

The sponsored race captured the attention of friends, family and strangers, with the brothers (from Felixstowe) surpassing their fundraising target 10 times over for Leukaemia UK.

Jake and Logan's dad was able to see them complete the challenge, however he sadly passed away surrounded by his loved ones just a few weeks later.

As well as making their dad proud by raising much-needed funds for charity, Jake and Logan have been shortlisted as finalists in the 'Young Fundraiser' category for this year's GoCardless JustGiving Awards.

Mum, Kirsty, said: "It's been an incredibly difficult six months for our entire family, especially the boys. Not long after learning

about their dad's illness, they came up with the idea of raising money for charity to help other people struggling with leukaemia, the idea actually came about as we watched Family Fortunes together. We set a target of £1,000 and the boys absolutely smashed it, raising nearly £10,000, and the donations are still coming in!

Luke was so proud of the boys and, likewise, we're so proud of him. He'd be thrilled to hear the boys' efforts were being recognised by JustGiving."

Jake and Logan will be joined by 20 other finalists at this year's GoCardless JustGiving Awards on September 18th.

The finalists were chosen by a panel of judges including professional strictly dancer Amy Dowden, broadcaster Adele Roberts, TV personality Jake Quickenden, paralympic swimmer Ellie Simmonds, TV presenter Sunetra Sarker and returning judge, radio presenter Rickie Haywood-Williams.

They were also joined by JustGiving president, Pascale Harvie, and managing director at headline sponsor GoCardless,

Pat Phelan.

Pascale Harvie (President and General Manager of JustGiving) said: "We have been so moved by Jake and Logan's story. Despite the devastating news of their dad's diagnosis, it was truly remarkable to see them bravely come together to help support other families affected by Leukaemia. What they have each achieved is nothing short of amazing and we cannot wait to celebrate them and all of our incredible finalists at what will be our 12th award ceremony."

Pat Phelan (Managing Director of UK & Ireland and Chief Customer Officer at GoCardless) said: "I'm so pleased to see Jake and Logan recognised as finalists. I was blown away by their dedication to fundraise for life-changing leukaemia research, and I'm glad that we're able to shine a light on their efforts."

The GoCardless JustGiving Awards are taking place on September 18th at the London Roundhouse in Camden, London, where this year's winners will be announced. To cast your vote, scan the QR code above.

and

This year, FlipSide goes head-to-head with various forms of power, brilliantly assisted by half a dozen wonderful guests from the worlds of performance, music, comedy, biography, place writing and investigative journalism. Threaded throughout the day, readings from poems pursuing power will remind us of the potency of the pen to stir hearts and minds.

Whether it's about interrogating Sizewell with Will Atkins or taking the mickey out of politicians with Rosie Holt, inviting us to intrigue in the Stuart court with Lucy Hughes-Hallett or investigating government

betrayals with Amelia Gentleman, you'll find it all at Flipside, alongside composing for change with Errollyn Wallen and acting the activist with award-winning actor Toby Jones; who joins us to consider the power and politics of performance and how drama can sometimes reveal truths hiding in plain sight.

This year, the Festival will be at a venue new to FlipSide, the Old Theatre in the heart of Framlingham from 10am-6pm on September 28th, 2024. There are many things we can't affect in this world, but you do have the power to choose here. Just say yes to FlipSide 2024.

Tickets are £65 for the full day, £35 (£20 concessions) for the morning or afternoon sessions only, and are available to buy online at: www.flipsideuk.org
