Tales from the Repair Shed

Though just a unit on the Martlesham Creek Industrial Park, it's surprising what a difference we can make at the Suffolk Repair Shed.

That happens most obviously by mending just over three quarters of the items which come in. After just eighteen months of operations, we are now dealing with up to 100 items a month, so that's up to 76 things which don't end up in landfill.

So there's a difference for the owners of the items, sometimes in money terms, sometimes because an item with sentimental value is

brought back to life.

As well as that, we often make a difference to the items themselves, for example, by renewing the wiring and plugs to modern standards on electrical items. But we're also starting to push back against the unnecessary obstacles which manufacturers put in the way of mending stuff. It's bad enough that things are made with no thought for repair. But that's made worse by the inclusion of special fasteners to deter dismantling. So we now discard those and replace with a normal fastener to improve maintainability.

Just as important as all that, we make a difference to the people who help out at the Repair Shed by providing a space where purposeful work can be done in a sociable environment where skills

are shared. It's a good deal of fun, and there is plenty of work to do whatever your type and level of skill. Come and see what goes on, you never know what a difference it could make.

02 Textiles exhibition 'Seamless Flow'

The group OTT was formed in 2002 when a group of students started to showcase their creative skills through regular exhibitions. They have since flourished holding colourful and dazzling exhibitions with a vitally fun element. Some members of the group have changed over the years but fully embrace the ethos of not being too serious. A key element

of our exhibitions is always a memorable art installation with a 'tongue-in-cheek element. Our exhibition in Aldeburgh this year will certainly not be a disappointment with exhibits reflecting the local landscape and a very quirky installation! Our exhibition 'Seamless Flow' will be held in Aldeburgh at the Courtyard Gallery from June 6th-11th and is open 10am-5pm.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group (AVSFHG) held on April 15th, the following people were re-elected:

Angela Skelcher stood down as Programme Secretary, having served on the committee for over 10 years, both as Secretary and Programme Secretary, and Jenny Mann was elected in her place.

Steve Stocks stood down as Webmaster, having also previously served as Treasurer. We are delighted to announce

that Mick Ayers has volunteered to act as our Webmaster. Charles Turner was elected to the committee and the remaining committee members: Jane Evans, Maggie Strutt and Raymond Green were re-elected.

After the meeting, Robert Ashton told us a little about his latest book 'Where are the Fellows who Cut the Hay?' and Janet Barnes talked about farms in Middleton.

announce that the Carnival Queen will be Minnie Malumba. She's told us: "I am 18 and currently a year 13 student with hopes of studying medicine at Bart's and the London Medical School in September. I'm studying Biology, Chemistry and Religious Studies at A Level. I enjoy baking and cooking as well as going for dog walks with my family around Aldeburgh. I have a part-time job at Ives Ice Cream Parlour where I've worked since I was 15 (lemon curd is my favourite flavour!) I am very excited about being chosen as this year's Carnival Queen."

Minnie will be attended by Emily Cable who says: "I'm seven years old and I like to go fishing with my dad, family walks and playing at the park with my cousins and friends."

The second attendant will be Bella Koszykowski who says: "I'm seven years old and my favourite things to do are swimming, dancing and gymnastics. I love spending time with my family and friends. My family take part in the carnival procession every year."

Both girls attend Aldeburgh Primary School. They're very excited to have been chosen by Minnie to be her attendants and are really looking forward to carnival day. Minnie's mum Nicola was Carnival Queen in

1993, and Bella's mum Ria was one of Nicola's attendants. With less than 100 days to go, plans are well advanced and include all the traditional favourites. There will be a weekend of fun with giant kites (illuminated on Saturday evening), music on the beach, quirky duck races, the unique egg boat race, Punch and Judy, the 10k run and the silent auction for which we've already received many wonderful prizes. There are opportunities to bid for a cruise, stays in beautiful Aldeburgh properties, delicious meals, exciting things to do and lovely things to buy.

On Monday, the theme of 'Anything 80' gives plenty of scope to those taking part in the carnival procession, decorating their houses or just joining in the fun! We hope that entrants will be thinking of things that happened 80 years ago like D Day, films and music of the 1980s and the fashion of that decade, shoulder pads, lots of neon!

On carnival day morning (August 19th), the life-boat training exercise will be an early opportunity to see the new Aldeburgh Life-Boat. This will be followed by an exciting 10-minute

formation flypast display over the sea. The afternoon will include a Waiter's Race in the High Street, the carnival procession, dancing in the street, the magical lantern procession with the finale super firework display.

All this would not be possible without some fantastic sponsors and generous support from everyone attending the event. The event now costs in excess of £50k, so it's important for everyone coming to the event to use the carnival car parks, buy their lanterns from the carnival, take part in the events, make a contactless contribution and put as much as they can afford into the collecting boxes.

Everyone on the Carnival Committee gives their time for free but with are around 1,400 hours of work involved, we need lots of people to give a little bit of time to help make it a success. We need volunteers to become part of the Aldeburgh Carnival family for the weekend, to shake buckets, operate very straightforward contactless payment pads, and help in other ways to raise the money. It's a great way to meet new people and become a part of this illustrious community event and each year £1,000's are donated to support local good causes. Leiston to receive new banking hub

LINK has confirmed that local people will be able to continue to access banking services in the community through a new banking hub in Leiston.

Following the submission of new information by local MP

Dr. Thérèse Coffey about future changes in and around Leiston, LINK (UK Cash Access and ATM network) re-evaluated Leiston and have now confirmed that it will benefit from a new

banking hub as part of a wider commitment to protect access to cash.

LINK's Deputy CEO Adrian Roberts recently joined Dr. Coffey on a visit to the town, where she was able to provide new information about upcoming changes in the local area to support LINK's assessment. Additionally, Barclays have committed to keeping the branch open until the hub is

ready, meaning there will be no gap in service for the Leiston community.

In 2021, the banking industry agreed that following the closure of any bank branch, LINK will identify whether a community requires further cash services. Additionally, any community without a branch can contact LINK directly and ask to be assessed for support.

Banking hubs are a shared banking space, similar to a traditional bank branch, but available to everyone. The hub will consist of a counter service operated by Post Office employees, where customers of any bank can withdraw and deposit cash, make bill payments and carry out regular banking transactions. In addition, there will be private spaces where customers can speak to community bankers from their own bank for more complicated matters that require specialist knowledge or privacy. The banks will be working on a rotating basis, so there will be staff from different banks available on different days.

banking hubs up and running across the UK and LINK have recommended 121 in total, including in Haverhill and Mildenhall.

The banking hub will now be delivered by Cash Access UK. Over the next few weeks, it will begin to engage with the local community and to start looking for potential sites.

Chairman June welcomed members friends and guests from Woodbridge, Aldeburgh, Colneis and Holbrook clubs on April 25th for our Open Meeting at Wickham Market Village Hall.

It was lovely to see so many smiling faces. Thank you was given to Paula for her great handson meeting in March, which was enjoyed by all. Thank you Jan for the foyer and table arrangements and Mandy for her craft stall.

Our visit to Helmingham Hall Gardens is on June 11th, meeting there at 2pm. Tickets £9 each. A social get-together. We were then introduced to our demonstrator Lorena Dyer. This was Lorena's first visit to our club. She said it was a privilege to do this demonstration for us. As we get older, we all find ourselves needing more 'Lipstick, Powder & Paint' and she was looking forward to showing us her interpretations of this title. Lorena's arrangements were soon filling the stage. Stunning flowers in many different colours

and beautiful foliage, superb containers and accessories. She talked us through each design and it really was an excellent evening. Lorena was a fast, confident arranger and her interpretations of the title were brilliant. It was such a pleasure to watch and listen to her. Members enjoyed refreshments and looking more closely at the stunning designs on the stage. Some lucky members went home with an arrangement won in the raffle.

The vote of thanks was given by our President Elsie who thanked Lorena for a most enjoyable and knowledgeable evening.

The next meeting of the Flower Club on May 23rd, this is a change to the schedule and will now be our very own Paula whose theme will be 'The History of The RHS Chelsea Flower Show'.

The meeting closed and members were wished a safe journey home.

Community Allotment blooms with life: AGM recap and birdwatching delights!

How lovely to see the sun after the long, wet winter, and to see nature bursting forth with so much energy and colour!

We held an Open Morning at the community allotment on March 20th which was well attended. It was a fine day luckily, with no rain. Steve Massey came and gave a very informative session on the wild flowers in the allotment. Everyone was astonished to see the beauty and intricacy of the plants through an eyeglass.

One of our Allotmenteers is keeping a list of all the birds she's seen/heard on the allotment. She's going to put a list up on our noticeboard at the entrance to the

allotment, so everyone can see as and when she adds more.

The birds she's seen regularly are: robins, blue tits, great tits, blackbirds, wood pigeons and dunnocks. Other sightings have been longtailed tits, coal tits, chaffinches, greenfinches, goldfinches, kestrels and buzzards. She's heard the following in the bushes by the gate: chiffchaffs, greenfinches, goldfinches, siskins, wrens, blackcaps, redstarts, jays. Isn't this a fantastic variety of birds! There's still space in our boxes for people to grow whatever they'd like. Or just come along for a coffee and chat and see what is going on. We meet every

Wednesday morning. We held our well-attended AGM on April 30th. We'd only held our previous one at the back end of last year. We needed to bring the AGM forward to coincide with the end of our financial year. We'd had to postpone it several times during Covid which is why it's been held at the back end of the year since then. April's also a better time of year for people to come out, as the weather is warmer and it's light in the late afternoon. Iconic stars set to perform alongside East Suffolk pupils at SHAKE's Sax Arts Fest gig

SHAKE is delighted to announce a rehearsed reading of The Horse in The Furrow by George Ewart Evans, as part of the second Saxmundham Arts Festival, on June 8th.

The reading boasts a starstudded cast, led by Alex Jennings (The Crown, Mr Bates vs The Post Office) Charlie Haylock (voice coach on The Dig) and Barbara Ashfield (née Tilney, Akenfield). These three iconic stars are joined by three talented teenage lads, from Thomas Mills, Alde Valley Academy and Woodbridge schools.

The reading of Evans' book about Suffolk farm life in the horse-drawn era, is scheduled to take place at the Word Space, in St. John's Church Saxmundham, from 12pm-1:45pm, free entry. George Ewart Evans lived five miles from Saxmundham in the village of Blaxhall. He wrote The Horse in The Furrow in 1960, as a faithful account of the heavy horses on the farms of East Suffolk, and the horsemen who tended them. Evans interviewed a fast-vanishing group of horsemen, grooms, farmers and even their clothiers, as the tractor was changing the face of the countryside for ever. His book is brim-full of fascinating detail that brings old Suffolk vividly to life.

International Suffolk horse societies in North America and Australia have signalled their interest in SHAKE's performance, particularly now that the beautiful chestnut-coloured Suffolk Punches have become a critically endangered species.

SHAKE is a Saxmundhambased theatre company led by director Jenny Hall, who has abridged the book with Katrin Williams (BBC Radio Book of the Week). Past readings produced by SHAKE have starred Geraldine James, Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Oliver Cotton and many local Suffolk actors including Tim Fitzhigham.

Part of SHAKE's remit is to teach verse-speaking (the techniques of speaking Shakespeare's verse) to a new generation, and to give outstanding opportunities to Suffolk performers.

SHAKE also produces weekend festivals of Shakespeare. Begun by Jenny Hall in Halesworth in 2019, past festivals have featured a host of theatre stars including Dame Harriet Walter, Ed Hall, Geraldine James, Sir Stanley Wells, Lucy Bailey, and Dame Janet Suzman.

Jenny's father, born in Bury St. Edmunds, directed the film of Ronald Blythe's Akenfield in 1974, in which both she and her grandfather Reg Hall appear "very briefly!", she says.

SHAKE's performance of The Horse in The Furrow is sponsored by Knock on Wood, the musical instrument company based in Saxmundham. Sax Arts Fest is run by The Art Station, led by Clare Palmier, and supported by Arts Council England, East Suffolk Council and Saxmundham Town Council.

Andrew Nowell passed away peacefully on April 8th 2024, aged 88.

Very much loved partner, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

The funeral service was held at Waveney Memorial Park and Crematorium on May 7th at 11am.

Events at Wrentham Chapel

Classic Cars visit Wrentham Chapel:

13 classic vehicles, spanning 80 years of motoring history, visited Wrentham Chapel for national Drive-it Day on April 21st. The Chapel opened from 10am-4pm, offering a variety of refreshments and other 'pit stop' facilities.

The weather was dry and sunny, giving drivers and passengers time to linger and chat whilst admiring one another's vehicles. The Chapel was also pleased to welcome other visitors who called in to see the display and view the Chapel.

Caedmon evening will be held on Wednesday June 19th at 7pm. Celebrate a Suffolk summer solstice with this evening of 'bring and share' music, word and song. A light buffet with wine and fruit juice will be served in the interval. There is no charge but donations towards the upkeep of the Chapel will be much appreciated. Upcoming summer event at Sibton Church

A summer art exhibition is planned for July 13th and 14th at Sibton Church, IP17 2NB, with visiting the Sibton Abbey Ruin also available.

Creative artists and craftspeople known for their work, including Suffolk Craft Society exhibitors, will have work on display and for sale and local artists are being invited to take part as well.

The ambience and space at Sibton Church provides the perfect setting for such an event, giving an unusual opportunity in which to contemplate the art of today in an ancient setting. A walk to the nearby Sibton Abbey Ruin can only add to that sense of the influence of art, and the artistic life, in enriching our experience of heritage.

To add further interest for visitors, demonstrations will show how art works come into being. For example, in stained glass creation as well as in other art forms. The Sibton Abbey Ruin site will be open to visitors, and artists who wish will be able to use

A key part to being prepared is understanding when your business is required to register for VAT and the dates that this is effective from. Let's dive into the criteria:

Threshold amount:

The current VAT registration threshold for the UK has, from the 1st April 2024, been increased to £90,000 from £85,000 as confirmed by the Chancellor in his 2024 Spring Budget. This comes as a welcome change for small businesses who have a general private customer base and would be negatively affected by becoming VAT registered.

When to register:

If your total VAT taxable turnover for the last 12 months exceeds £90,000 (the VAT threshold), you must register for VAT within 30 days of reaching this level. It's important to note that this is looked at on a rolling basis, meaning that it's crucial to have up-to-date, reliable data making you able at any given point, to assess whether you have exceeded the threshold.

Alternatively, if you expect that your turnover will go over £90,000 in the next 30 days, you should also register promptly.

Even if your turnover is below the threshold, you can register for VAT voluntarily, which can prove advantageous if your taxable

outgoings exceed your taxable incomings.

Effective date of registration:

If you exceeded the threshold in the last 12 months, your effective date of registration is the first day of the second month after you went over the threshold.

For example, if your VAT taxable turnover exceeded £90,000 between 10 July 2023 and 9 July 2024, you must register by 30 August 2024, and your effective date of registration would be 1 September 2024.

If you anticipate exceeding the threshold in the next 30 days, you must register by the end of that 30-day period, and your effective date of registration will be the date you became aware of this, not the date your turnover went over the threshold.

Exemptions:

If everything you sell is exempt from VAT, you do not have to register for VAT. However, if you sell goods or services that are VAT exempt and are based in Northern Ireland, you'll need to register if you buy goods for more than £90,000 from EU VATregistered suppliers to use in your business.

By staying on top of this, you can ensure that your business' transition to becoming VAT registered is without the hiccups that many others experience.

Halesworth resident Juliet Corbett has founded a brand new theatre company 'Cliff Edge Theatre'.

Juliet founded Cliff Edge Theatre in 2023, with a vision to promote the work of writers and actors primarily over the age of 50. Cliff Edge has a mission to write and perform new works that have a bold, risky, unsettling edge.

The premiere production, 'Daddy's Girl' was performed at The Cut, Halesworth in 2023.

Her latest venture, 'No Country for Old Women' is partnered with The Field Theatre Company in Littleport, Cambridgeshire. It features "three bad ass old bags and a callow youth". 'No Country for Old Women' mixes music, comedy and drama to overturn preconceptions about later life and bring a fresh perspective on

the serious business of "growing old disgracefully".

Funded by the National Lottery, 'No Country for Old Women' is touring Suffolk theatres from June 26th to 28th. Waveney and Blyth Arts is building a programme of walks, talks, exhibitions and workshops for the second half of 2024. First out of the stocks is the newly revamped Sandlings Summer Sculpture Show, an extended residency at Potton Hall (IP17 3EF) between Westleton and Dunwich, which will run for three months from June 20th to Sept 22nd. The show is open daily from 10am5pm and entrance is FREE. A wide range of sculptures, assemblages and installations are for sale, including works in stone, steel, glass, clay and galvanised wire. Rumburgh Buck presented with fourth CAMRA award

Stella and Tyrone Cattermole (Managers of The Rumburgh Buck near Halesworth) were presented with a fourth 'outstanding pub' award on Saturday April 20th. The pub, which hit national news following a visit by global superstar Ed Sheeran last November, has been voted 2024 Overall Pub of The Year by members of North East Suffolk CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) having won two CAMRA awards in 2023 and another in 2022.

Mrs. Cattermole took on the pub in 2019, just six months before Covid hit and all pubs were forced to close, while her husband

continued to work as a butcher at Cleveleys, helping in the pub at the weekends. He now works full time as the pub's cook. The Rumburgh Buck is the first pub that the couple have managed. "It's really exciting to be recognised four times" said Mrs. Cattermole, who had a career in marketing before taking on the pub in 2019, adding "It's a big achievement for us."

A focus on the customer, getting the basics right and "very, very good staff" is behind their success, according to Mr. Cattermole. "We listen to what the customers are asking for and deliver what they want." "We do a lot of gluten-free products now" added Mrs. Cattermole. Stay sun safe Tips to prevent sunburn this summer

As summer approaches, it's tempting to spend more time outdoors soaking up the sun. However, with increased sun exposure comes the risk of sunburn, a common and painful condition that can lead to longterm skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer. Here are some effective strategies to protect your skin and enjoy the summer safely:

Use Suncream Properly

One of the most effective ways to prevent sunburn is by applying suncream regularly. Choose a broad-spectrum suncream with an SPF of 30 or higher, as it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply it generously on all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before going outside. Remember to reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you're swimming or sweating.

Seek Shade During Peak Hours

The UV Index provides important information about the strength of UV radiation on any given day. Checking the UV Index can help you take appropriate precautions. On days when the index is high, it's especially important to take extra steps to protect your skin.

Educate & Supervise

Children

Archery:

The Framlingham Bowmen Club was formed in 1990 as a Target Archery Club affiliated to the Grand National Archery Society and is open to adults and juniors over the age of 10. The Club range at Framlingham Sports Club is laid out to enable distances of up to 100 yards to be shot. As well as club shooting, several members take part in open competition both as individuals and as part of the Framlingham Bowmen team. This is mainly in Essex but competitions in Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire are also entered. During the summer, the Club runs classes for beginners wishing to try out the sport. Five

lessons are provided under trained supervision using equipment supplied by the club. The Club takes part in the Framlingham Gala and runs demonstration events at local fêtes to help with fundraising activities. Each year, the Archery Club hosts East Anglian Championships. Running for over 65 years, Bow men and women from across the region come along to take part, and is open to children and disabled people. Wenhaston Bowls Club introduces Brian Munro Cancer Trophy

Members of Wenhaston Bowls Club recently had a shock when one of their local members Brian Munro informed them that he had terminal cancer.

The Chairwoman, Vice Chair and Secretary visited him and he surprised them by saying he'd bought a trophy which he'd like Wenhaston Bowlers to play for. He has called it the Brian Munro Cancer Trophy.

This trophy was played for on April 28th. It's a three wood pairs competition and 16 members (eight teams) took part. It was a most enjoyable day, played in good spirits and included tea, coffee and a bacon roll which

is exactly how Brian would have enjoyed playing his bowls. He was hoping to attend and present the trophy but unfortunately, he was not well enough that day.

After a round robin of three ends the top, two teams ended up in a final between John Robinson and Jim Boggis against James Cantrell and Ray Heater. It was a very close fought encounter, won by James and Ray (Club President) by six shots to four.

As President Ray was one of the winners, the trophy was presented on behalf of Brian by the Club Chairwoman, Jen Daly. The proceeds from the day will be forwarded to Cancer Research.

Croquet:

We play on lawns which are well maintained for us, and are located between the main football pitch at the sports club, and the Padgent Field. There are three closely-mown lawns accommodating 12 to 16 players at any time. Using four differentcoloured balls, we play mainly a form of golf croquet, 'running' the hoops in a certain order before hitting the peg. We also currently hold an annual 'pairs' competition and picnic. Balls, hoops and pegs are provided. 'Worn' mallets are available but most members eventually purchase their own.

Fees are very reasonable: a single FREE taster session is offered. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. No special clothing is required, however flat shoes must be worn. Games are enjoyable, rather than highly competitive.

Football (Juniors):

Framlingham Town Football Club has a very active Youth Section. During the 2013/2014 season, 275 players represented the Youth Section, supported by over 30 FA-qualified coaches. Youth teams play in the South Suffolk Youth League with the exception of the U19 Knights, U18's and U15 Girls teams. South Suffolk League matches are played on Saturday mornings with cup/plate matches scheduled on Sundays.

The U18's play in the Thurlow Nunn Youth League, Central Division, the Girls' team on Sundays and the U19s on Saturdays. Another under 18 team play Saturday mornings and an U17 team that play Sunday mornings. At the heart of the Youth Section is a core of volunteers that make up the Youth Section Committee, their

previous hard work alongside the Senior Section has allowed the Youth section to grow and expand to its current size.

Football (Seniors): The Framlingham Town Football Club first team, known as "The Castlemen" play in the Thurlow Nunn Premier League. Matches are played on Saturday afternoons at 3pm, or Tuesday evenings. The reserve team plays in the Suffolk & Ipswich Intermediate A' League. The A team plays in the Suffolk & Ipswich Intermediate C' League. The Veterans play in the Norfolk & Suffolk Veterans League on Sundays.

Framlingham Town Football Club was founded back in 1887.

During its 113 years of football, the club has played in various leagues starting in the early years in the Ipswich and District then the Framlingham League and progressed through the Leiston League, Woodbridge League and then moving back into the Ipswich Leagues. For training, there is a floodlight pitch that is extremely well used by the now 20 teams that make up the club.

Hockey:

Framlingham Hockey Club originally started out as Carlton Park Ladies, we then became affiliated with Framlingham

Sports Club and rightly had a name change.

The club currently consists of two ladies teams, a junior girls team and a junior boys team. The latter was started in September 2017 with help from Sport England lottery funding.

Through the development of the boys' squad, the aim is to eventually have a men's team playing regular league hockey.

Running:

Framlingham Flyers is a smallish running club with keen and friendly members who all share the love for running. We meet regularly throughout the week.

Monday being our structured training session, Thursday is a tempo running session and at the weekends we enjoy long runs into the countryside.

Based in Framlingham, the club has regularly entered teams for local races and even has individuals running international events, anything from 5K to marathons.

As a member of Framlingham Flyers, you'll receive various benefits that include being able to attend regular training sessions and receiving coaching and advice from UK Athletics qualified club coaches, having the opportunity to represent the

club in various competitions such as: Suffolk Winter Cross Country League, County, Regional and National Championships as well as at team relay events, receiving discount on race entry fees (usually at least £2), and have the opportunity to apply for a London Marathon club place (conditions apply). The birth of Leiston Town Bowls Club

In 2023, Leiston upgraded its skateboard park. We've been told how great it is to see the Skateboard Park grow in popularity. It's put Leiston on the map in its provision for the future of its youth. Our full praise goes to all who were responsible for its success.

It reminded us of another long-serving sport in Leiston, Flat Green Bowls, which begun on a green in the late 19th century that is now the children's play area on Victory Road. From the Victory Road green, it moved up to Leiston Town Works Sports Club, on what is now the Leiston Town Athletics Association (LTAA) car park. When the works folded, Garrets handed over the Leiston Works Sports & Social Club to the town. Initially taken over by the District Council, later they in turn handed it to LTAA to manage in the early 1900s.

At this time, it was a successful club with a membership of 50100 through to the WWII years. There was consistent playing

through the years, until the late 70s/early 80s. Facilitating winners of local leagues, cups and shields many times over, until the green and facilities were well-dated and it was time for change; A new green was needed, complete with facilities, pavilion changing rooms, toilets and new kitchen.

The brain-child of a team of dedicated bowlers, Andy Ling, his parents and friend Terry Archer, together had great plans for a new green. The tragic loss of his father only spurred Andy on and along with his mother Rose, he and friend Terry were determined to make the dream a reality. The two lead bowlers had a vision for a new green. They negotiated with LTAA for the waste corner of the sports ground just past what is now the LTAA Sports & Social Club House, and from there, the Leiston Town Bowls Club was born.

Andy was the architect, with all the drawings, plans and sketches in his own handwriting, he led with Terry's support the

creation from waste land to what is today the pride of East Suffolk Bowls.

The whole project (the new green as we see it today) was built and funded by members with no outside support. Andy led his team from scratch. The lawn grass was found north of the border, only the best bowling green grass was considered. The hard graft and building work was done by the members, digging deep over two feet deeper than the bowls green today. Some of these members (Gerald, Peter, Paul and Bing) are still about, enjoying the resulting labours of their fellow bowlers. Andy and Terry long passed being able to benefit from their labours, still retain a keen interest in the successes of the club.

A National Champion Bowler proudly opened the green in 1984, commenting on the topclass facilities.

Over the years, our annual triples and pairs tournaments have attracted bowlers from over the borders of Suffolk, into the

counties of Essex and Norfolk, these bring upwards of 100 + spectators to our town.

Peter Baggott was the first Greenkeeper and was also involved in the creation of the new green. Today, he oversees the present green keeper Mick Battle, ensuring the highest standard of playing surface.

In recent years (2020-2023), recognition of the quality of the facilities has been seen with Suffolk County Bowls Association using it to host four regional county games, Suffolk County Finals days as well as other county-wide cup finals being played on the Leiston Town Bowls Green. Due to Covid in 2020, the membership dropped considerably, causing the club to consider its viability. Costing £4,000 a year to maintain its facilities, a membership of 60 plus was needed. Trying to survive, it dropped out of some of its league commitments and leaving some leagues. Today, Leiston Town

Bowls play in three leagues; Saxmundham Division One, Woodbridge Division Two and Bob Wright. Next year, it's hoping to reapply to join the Fynn League, having initially dropping out because of lack of members. 2022 and 2023 has seen an influx of new members all demonstrating their bowling skills very quickly.

In 2023, the green, pavilion and ground facilities are there as a testament to the efforts of past members, but particularly Andy Ling and Terry Archer who saw the fruition of their ideas. A legacy to Andy's parents, visiting bowlers never fail to comment on the quality of the facilities. The green is the envy of many clubs, the dreams of Andy and Terry became realities, enjoyed today over 40 years later. Leiston Town Bowls will always be indebted to Andy and Terry and the club team that built the present facilities, Leiston should be proud of another group of its own residents prepared to give something back to the town.

Although Radio Caroline is better known for broadcasting off the Essex coast, it spent its first 6 months broadcasting offshore from Felixstowe. "I'd wholeheartedly recommend the Radio Caroline talk. Blaxhall Community Festival

June 29th & 30th

Over the weekend of June 29th and 30th, from 11am-4pm, Blaxhall's St. Peter's Church (IP12 2DP) will host the freeto-attend Blaxhall Community Festival.

This years Blaxhall Community Festival's theme is 'British Birds'. Over the weekend, St. Peter's Church will be filled with splendid flower arrangements, inspired by our feathered friends, accompanied by music, readings and poetry to set hearts aflutter. On the bill are performances by Charlie Haylock, the Strumming Birds, Rosy Thornton (author of Sandlands), Heartbeat acapella and some Suffolk folk singers. There is a display of watercolours by avian artist Ian Longhurst, a sale of plants from Katie's Garden Plant Centre, expert guided tours identifying local flora and fauna, family activities and of course, Blaxhall's bakers' hospitality, famous for their traditional cream teas and cakes. On June 30th at 3:30pm will be 'The Circle of Friendship'. Join the flock on Sunday afternoon to create a circle around the church to celebrate friendship and appreciation for life's simple pleasures. Everyone is welcome. Funds raised go towards the restoration of St Peter's Church tower to bring the bells back to Blaxhall.

New Parish Beacon will light up the coast at D-Day commemoration evening

Apprentices from Sizewell B Power Station have been putting their engineering skills to the test by manufacturing a brazier to top off the new beacon on Sizewell beach.

Sizewell B apprentices Matt Woolf, Jack Hovell and Charlie Mallett were tasked to produce the structure when Leistoncum-Sizewell Town Council approached the station for their assistance in fulfilling their ambition to make Sizewell Gap a prominent, new location for a beacon.

Contractors and after a few weeks, the concrete was set and ready for them to install the brazier.

Matt Woolf (Sizewell B Apprentice) said: "It means a lot to be able to support this project. It gives me an opportunity to deepen my understanding and appreciation of what happened on D-Day, as well as to enhance my design engineering skills at the same time."

The project has been completed well in time for the D-Day 80 Commemoration, which will see beacons across the land lit in unison. The oak post supporting the brazier was placed in position in early April by NJB

Bruno Peek CVO OBE OPR (The King's Pageantmaster) said: "As Pageantmaster of the D-Day 80 - June 6th 2024, commemorations being organised throughout the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Territories to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice made by many thousands of allied troops on the five blood-soaked beaches

of Normandy, France, on 6th June 1944, I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate and applaud the community and Parish of Leiston for their magnificent, permanent beacon, which they've had specially made and erected on their coastline in wonderful tribute to the soldiers, sailors, merchant seamen and airmen involved in the D-Day landings 80 years ago. The people of our great nation will be proud of them. When lit, it will represent the 'light of peace' that emerged from the dreadful darkness of war all those years ago."

The beacon project has been made possible by the supply of materials and manufacturing costs for the brazier donated by EDF Sizewell B. Donations have also been received from Sizewell

C and County Councillor T-J Haworth-Culf, with Leistoncum-Sizewell Town Council contributing the remaining cost.

On June 6th, proceedings will begin on Sizewell beach with 40s music at approximately 7pm. Easing us into the sunset, will be the Royal British Legion (RBL) Band Leiston with some nostalgic tunes from the war years. At 9pm, all are welcome to gather for The Tribute, which will be read by Flight Lieutenant Stuart Smith, Officer Commander of 1379 (Leiston) Squadron of the RAF Air Cadets, while beacons will be lit across the nation. We're delighted that John Farmer CBE, President of the RBL Leiston Branch will be lighting our new beacon in unison with other locations in the UK. Snacks, drinks and fish and chips will be served at 'Sizewell Tea'. Lesley Hill (Chair of Leistoncum-Sizewell Town Council) said: "We're extremely excited that we've achieved our ambition to install our beacon in time for such a momentous occasion. The beacon will serve our parish for decades to come, at many more events like this one. It's all been made possible by Sizewell B apprentices, who have provided our town with a truly unique beacon.
