U3A East Suffolk

Coming out of winter hibernation! As the days get longer, and a little warmer, it's time to come out of hibernation! Members of U3A East Suffolk are already enjoying the 2024 programme of talks, with meetings at Kesgrave, Woodbridge, Felixstowe and Saxmundham, and they are looking forward to more! In March, members can celebrate the lives of notable Suffolk women, find out about haunted pubs and ghosts or about Suffolk estuaries, and listen to a U3A ukulele band. In April, there will be insights into the life of a wildlife photographer, the work of the East Anglian Air Ambulance, the influence of birdsong on poets and composers, as well as life at sea and the fishing industry.

Full information is available on: www.U3Aeastsuffolk.org.uk There are more than 2,500 U3A East Suffolk members, people who have joined with a view to getting the most out of life. They are meeting up at lunch clubs, in walking groups, quizzing, practicing foreign languages, discussing arts and sciences and making new friends and memories. New members are welcome, with the expectation that they will contribute to the success of the group. Membership is on an annual basis, costs less than £20 for a full year and gives members access to all the organisation's many activities. For more information about U3A, please see the website or call: 0300 123 3913.

Framlingham Fellowship news Our January meeting was held in the venue room at The Castle Inn and included a very interesting talk by Lily Benbow, Director of Noble Prawn Ltd. Lily explained her life so far from catering college in Dublin, working in hotels and The House of Commons, to being a Detective in the Met Police and then coming to live in Suffolk to be a private chef at many various locations. We were all amazed at her journey and thank her for a very interesting talk and of course the very delicious nibbles Lily brought along. Our thanks to The Castle Inn for providing us with a venue. The March 21st meeting will be held at The Stables at The

Crown 2:30pm and include a talk from Ruth Goudy, the Flower writer and broadcaster from Kiln Farm Nursery at Kesgrave. Flower Power - How flowers benefit our wellbeing. Our meetings are open to all, include refreshments and we look forward to seeing new faces in 2024, meetings start at 2:30pm, at The Crown Hotel. For further information please email: framlingham-suffolk@ sja.org.uk. We look forward to welcoming our speakers to our meetings in 2024, which include Jim Jarvie OBE talking about his time with HM Customs and Excise and UK Border Force, chair based yoga, a visit to Scarlett and Mustard factory and coach trip to Bury St. Edmunds.

The East Anglia Working Trials and Training Society 202488

The East Anglia Working Trials and Training Society (EAWTTS) hold their annual working trials competitions on farmland near Alderton, Woodbridge. Attracting big and small dogs of all varieties, working trials is an exciting outdoor activity for dog owners. Competitions held throughout the country comprise of three to four phases: • Scent work: The tracking test requires dogs to follow a human trail between 30 minutes to three hours old, finding small articles that have been dropped along the way. Following on from that a "search square" requires the dog to find articles placed in a marked off 25m square area. • Control: This is where the dog is tested during heel-work, recall, retrieve and "send-aways", with redirection at the higher levels (the ability to send the dog to at least two different places in the area). Included in this section are the "Stays". • Agility: Agility comprises of a high jump of up to three foot, a long jump of up to 8'6" and a scale jump of 5'6". Smaller dogs (less than 10", or less than

15") participate competing over smaller obstacles. • Patrol: Only attracting the higher qualified dogs and frequently running over two days, as well as the exercises above, includes tests of search and escort, pursuit, detention and recall. The assisting stewards play the role of a "criminal" and wear a padded arm for protection. The essence of this part of the trial is to prove owners have the highest level of control over their dogs, whilst tapping into their natural 'play' drive. The EAWTTS Open Trial is held on March 2nd and 3rd. Their Championship Trial runs from March 20th to 24th. Qualification at a Championship Working Trial allows the addition of letters after the dog's official Kennel Name. To compete at championship level, dogs have first to achieve a qualifying level of competence at an open trial. For more information about the trials, and the society, please call Diane Ling (Chairperson) on 07973 784861 or email: diane_ling2000@yahoo.co.uk. Nicky Hugo, on behalf of EAWTTS

Easter Egg Hunt

Kelsale Post Office closure It seems that when the current postmaster at Saxmundham retires in March, the other outreach Post Offices in the surrounding villages (Snape, Yoxford, Wangford and Walberswick) will be replaced by a mobile van from Ipswich but not Kelsale, because it's "too close to Saxmundham"! This is despite the fact that the incoming Saxmundham postmaster is perfectly willing to continue the service when he takes over. The Kelsale Post Office Outreach Service is provided every Wednesday morning and it is usually vibrant, full of people and very busy. It has a strong community function. Many of the Kelsale residents are elderly and/ or disabled, and many don't have a car. Kelsale Post Office provides a chance to do banking when banks all around are closing. The Post

Office is a lifeline. Saxmundham Post Office is in the middle of the busy High Street with no parking outside - pretty well impossible to access if of limited mobility. There has been no consultation about this and the villagers are most concerned. If you are also concerned, please write to our MP, Dr Thérèse Coffey (who lives in Saxmundham). She will be meeting the Post Office Minister to challenge the decision: therese. coffey.mp@parliament.uk, 4 Cumberland Street, Woodbridge, IP12 4AB. You may also wish to make representations to Wendy Hamilton: Network Provision Lead at Post Office (Norfolk, Suffolk and North Essex), Franchise Partnering, 100 Wood Street, London, EC2V 7ER, 07753 905010, wendy.hamilton@ postoffice.co.uk.

On March 31st at 3pm, Saxmundham Adventure Playground will be holding their Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the playground at Carlton Park. The first Egg Hunt was held in 1992 and has become an Annual Event ever since, with the same organisers in attendance every year. If you have not attended before, we hide cardboard eggs around the playground (to enable us to do this we will be closing the playground from 2:30pm-3pm on the day). At 3pm the Egg Hunt begins and once the children have found the cardboard eggs they can exchange them for chocolate eggs (we provide the eggs). The weather has always played an important part in encouraging families to attend but come rain, sunshine or even snow we will be there and we hope you will too. There is no charge for this event but there will be a donation bucket. The last fundraising event was the Victorian Evening in December when we held our Christmas Tombola. A very big thank you to all those who contributed to the evening by donating items for the tombola. Plus the two craft ladies who

supplied us with many fabulous craft items to sell. The total raised for the evening was £544, a very good result. Money raised is always spent on the playground in one way or another and the next project is replacing some of the safety surface around the play equipment, plus a new backboard for the Basket Ball Shoot. Every Year we have an Annual Inspection of the playground and one of the items picked up by the inspector last year was the lack of information on the notice board at the entrance to the playground. New Notice Boards were bought showing signs for No Dogs, No Bikes on the playground and that it is a Designated Alcohol Free Area, plus a sign telling you to take your litter home or use the bins provided. It also gives the Three Word Location (which is a simple way of locating the playground for emergency use). The new signs show a simple set of rules for the use of the playground. If all users follow these rules it will help to keep the playground safe and in good order for all to enjoy. Adventure Playground Committee

Gippeswyk Singers 'Hot Baroque' conducted by Janette Ruocco Gippeswyk Singers are pleased to announce their upcoming spring concert, which will take place on March 23rd at 7:30pm at St. Michael and All Angels Church, Martlesham Heath, IP5 3PL. The choir will be joined by the Dargason String Quartet

to perform Baroque music by Gluck, Handel, Pergolesi and Vivaldi. The programme includes Pergolesi's famous 'Stabat Mater' written for soprano, alto, tenor and bass choir parts, and the exuberant and regal 'Zadok the Priest' composed by Handel for the coronation of George II.

Under the direction of Janette Ruocco, Gippeswyk Singers are working towards surpassing their previous concert, which was described by some of the audience to be their best performance ever. Rehearsals have included an open sing morning. Existing choir members were joined by other

singers who were interested in experiencing a rehearsal of the Stabat Mater. Refreshments will be available after the concert. Tickets are £12 on the door or £10 in advance and are available from: www. ticketsource/gippeswyk-singers or by phoning 01473 620353.

J T Wilding Limited

"Big enough to cope, small enough to care"

Leiston Barclays bank rally on February 10th

Barclays closing in Leiston The matter of banks closing in a rural communities has really started to take effect and it seems that (although not rostered to close in 2024) the last branch of Barclays bank in Leiston has given notice to its clients that the branch will shut its doors this coming May. Whilst eventually a Hub service may be put in place, and the Post Office will do 'bankinglite' (my new term, let Suffolk take that credit for this at least!), it really isn't the service that some 30,000 local customers have come to expect. Apps and tele-banking have certainly taken over the volume of transactions, but that doesn't 'level up' when it comes to customers both domestic and

commercial having to take a three hour hike to Ipswich or Lowestoft to be carry out the important transactions. The Financial Conduct Authority are supposed to support the public in ensuring this last branch issue can be halted. But they are not ready with their plan! So the local authorities are being called upon as they offer transitional training for those who need digital support to join the new faceless world. Legislation named 'Consumer Duty' should be in the eye of all banks but it seems Barclays have skipped any authority in Suffolk and customers are in the for a life of 'Put Up & Shut Up'! The question is, with your millions of pounds worth of

money in their bank, is this the best the banks can do in Suffolk? This is being put to Barclays. Incensed residents and local politicians have taken on this impactful change of events. To have your voice heard, email:

Whether you're looking to add value to your property, create a more comfortable living space, or simply give your home a fresh look, home improvements are the way to go. One of the biggest benefits of home improvements is the increased comfort they can bring. Bungay Community Support expanding their reach

Calling all poets! ...or anyone who enjoys putting pen to paper! So many people in our community are disappointed at the apparent lack of awareness by energy providers with regard to the impact their proposed plans could have on our communities. The potential for damage to the coast between Aldeburgh and Thorpeness and inland over a large swathe of our county, means not only loss of wildlife and their habitats, but a detrimental impact on the quality of life for residents, businesses and tourism for years to come. Many of you will know of Suffolk Energy Action Solutions (SEAS) opposition to these plans and seen their support for alternative solutions involving keeping most wind and energy infrastructure offshore, taking power via subsea cabling closer to where it is needed and connecting to the grid onshore at brownfield sites. Here is an opportunity for an alternative protest which SEAS is supporting. We'd love you to write a poem. The poem you write might tell of the possible impact the onshore energy proposals could have on our landscape, our health, our community or our wildlife, taking care not to berate any political party or individual as

SEAS will be unable to publish them. So do please start writing, keeping your poem to an A4 size sheet with minimum font size of 12 but preferably larger. You may submit more than one poem. SEAS will select and publish a poem a day on social media which will be circulated to many people in the area and beyond. Each poem will have the copyright symbol added and be attributed to you as poet. You may find it helpful to sign up to the SEAS newsletter so you can follow the selected poems on their Facebook and Instagram pages. Send your poems to SEAS via the following email: withonevoicepoetrychallenge@ gmail.com and include your name and your email address. Submissions open until April 30th. It could have further impact to have the poems displayed throughout the area. We hope to laminate some selected poems and display them in a variety of places in East Suffolk e.g. lampposts, shop windows, notice boards even Aldeburgh Community Hospital sensory garden which is a gem, open to all and the spring flowers will soon be a delight to see. Poems may start to appear on display from mid-February so do have a go. Thank you in advance for your much anticipated offerings.

interaction and to involve them more in the local community. The wish list is also for people who are perhaps part of an art group and would be interested in working on art projects with the residents or including them perhaps in drawing classes, either to skill share or have the residents as models. If you have a talent, skill, interest or hobby you could share or talk about, we'd love to hear from you. Please email Leanne: activityoaklands@yahoo.com with a basic outline of what you could do to become involved. Thank you.

Measles vaccination plea from Dr. Dan Poulter, MP As an NHS hospital doctor who has worked in some of the biggest and best London Hospitals throughout my medical career, I am only too familiar with the signs and symptoms of Measles. Measles is an illness with unpleasant and sometimes lifethreatening complications; a virus that Britain had hoped to eradicate through a vaccination programme delivering herd immunity, but unfortunately, parents failing to vaccinate their children has resulted in a loss of herd immunity and a recent surge in Measles cases. Until recently, herd immunity had meant that cases of Measles had been isolated to small outbreaks in London and the big cities. However, the loss of herd immunity means that we are now seeing a surge of cases throughout the UK. Herd immunity is where the spread of an infectious disease within a population is prevented by the pre-existing immunity of a high proportion of people within

that population. In Britain, herd immunity against Measles had, in the past, been conveyed by an effective vaccination program, which in recent years meant a two-dose course of the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) triple vaccine administered before a child's fifth birthday. The MMR vaccine is routinely offered by health visitors and GPs. Herd immunity against Measles is achieved when 95% or more of the population have gained immunity. But in parts of London and Birmingham, less than 70% of the population have completed the MMR vaccination course by their fifth birthday. In Suffolk, the picture is better, with 89.1% of children being fully vaccinated by their 5th birthday but this is insufficient to convey herd immunity, and means that over 1 in 10 children in our county are not fully protected against the Measles virus. Measles is not an illness to be dismissed lightly. It is highly contagious with an R rate (or

reproduction rate) of between 15 and 16. When compared to the R rate of the first strain of Covid19 of between two and three, it is clear that Measles spreads easily and quickly in the unvaccinated. The school classroom is particularly fertile territory for the Measles virus to spread. The reason why vaccination against Measles is so important is because it can result in serious and life-threatening complications including pneumonia, meningitis, blindness and seizures. In pregnancy, Measles can cause miscarriage, still birth and premature labour. The task now is to restore herd immunity against Measles. If you or your child or grandchild has not completed the MMR vaccination course, then please book an appointment with your GP. It may just save a child's life. Dr Dan Poulter is the MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich and a practising NHS Doctor.

You are invited to join with the combined Churches in Aldeburgh for The World Day Of Prayer (WDP) 2024 on March 1st at 11am at The Fairfield Centre, Aldeburgh followed by free soup and roll lunch. Everyone is very welcome. The WDP Service takes place on the first Friday in March each year. On that day, people all around the world will be praying for one country. The country this year is Palestine, and the theme is "Bearing with one another in love". We will be joining with people across 146 countries and islands to pray with and for the people of Palestine. Future themes will include:

for the period January-23 to March-24, a 15-month period, to be reported on, and taxed in, the 2023/24 tax year. Clearly this would result in a higher tax liability than the usual 12-month period. If the taxpayer has any Overlap Profits (these arise at the commencement of a trade where accounts are drawn up to a date other than the end of a tax year and can result in an element of profits being taxed twice), these can be deducted from profits in the 2023/24 transitional year. In addition, taxpayers have the option to spread any additional transitional profits over up to five tax years. For example, if Mrs Smith generates steady profits of £20,000 per year, a 15-month period to March-24 would create £25,000 of profits. If she has £1,000 of overlap profits, the excess taxable profit is now £4,000. Spreading this over five years would mean an additional £800 taxed in each of the years 2023/24 to 2027/28. However, businesses won't always have full control over their reporting date, which may be fixed for a variety of reasons, and may have to apportion figures each year. If actual figures for the

Are you aware of the recent changes to how sole-traders and partners are taxed on their profits? Prior to 6th April 2023, unincorporated businesses could choose an annual reporting date and draw up accounts to that date every year. The profits from those accounts were taxed depending on the tax year in which the final day of the year falls. For example, Mrs Smith draws up accounts to 31st December each year, her profits for the year to December 2022 were taxed on the 2022/23 return. From 2023/24, HMRC changed these fundamental rules so that sole-traders and partnerships must instead report profits relating specifically to the tax year running 6th April to the following 5th April (or 1st April to 31st March). To facilitate this, businesses have two options; change their accounting year end to the tax year end or retain their current accounting date and apportion figures from two sets of accounting years into one tax return. Going back to Mrs Smith, changing her accounting year would mean drawing up accounts

Spring into skincare

Tips for healthy, radiant skin this March dry and parched, making it essential to replenish moisture levels. Incorporating a hydrating moisturiser into your daily routine can help lock in moisture and prevent dryness. Look for products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, which are known for their hydrating properties. Drinking an adequate amount of water is vital for maintaining skin hydration and overall health. As the weather warms up, our bodies naturally lose more fluids through sweat, making it even more important to stay hydrated. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day, and consider incorporating hydrating beverages like herbal

teas and coconut water into your daily routine for an extra boost of hydration. Sun protection matters: With the days getting longer and the sun shining brighter, don't forget to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Even though the weather may still feel dark and cold on some early-spring days, UV exposure can cause damage to the skin and accelerate aging. Make sunscreen a non-negotiable step in your skincare regimen by choosing a broad-spectrum formula with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply it generously to all exposed areas of your skin, including your face, neck, and hands, and remember to reapply throughout the day, especially if you're spending time outdoors. If you regularly wear makeup, opt for primers and foundations that have SPF protection in already. Gentle exfoliation: As we move into spring, it's time to scrub away dead skin cells and reveal a fresh, radiant complexion underneath. Gentle exfoliation helps to unclog pores, refine skin texture, and promote cell turnover, leaving your skin looking brighter and more youthful. Opt for exfoliants with gentle, natural ingredients, and limit exfoliation to once or twice per week to avoid overdoing it and causing irritation. Nourish from within: Skincare isn't just about what you apply to the surface, it's also

A new NHS campaign launching today aims to raise awareness of the seven conditions that can now be treated by high street pharmacies, without needing to see a GP. To promote the campaign, a number of pharmacies in England have been re-branded with names, including Aldeburgh Pharmacy who have rebranded to 'My Insect Bite is Getting Bigger' to highlight that patients can now get treatment for an infected insect bite on their local high street. Since January 31st, community pharmacies have been able to assess and treat patients for seven common conditions, covering sinusitis, sore throat, earache (for those aged one to 17), infected insect bite, impetigo, shingles, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women (aged 16 to 64). The nationwide campaign aims to help patients get quicker access to the care they need and, along with new oral contraception and blood pressure services, is expected to free up to 10 million GP appointments a year. For training, there is a floodlight pitch that is extremely well used by the now 20 teams that make up the club.

Hockey: Framlingham Hockey Club originally started out as Carlton Park Ladies, we then became affiliated with Framlingham Sports Club and rightly had a name change. The club currently consists of two ladies teams, a junior girls team and a junior boys team. The latter was started in September 2017 with help from Sport England lottery funding. Through the development of the boys' squad, the aim is to eventually have a men's team playing regular league hockey. Please visit the Hockey Club website for full club details and how to become a member: www.framlingham hockeyclub.org.uk

Running: Framlingham Flyers is a smallish running club with keen and friendly members who all share the love for running. We meet regularly throughout the week. Monday being our structured training session, Thursday is a tempo running session and at the weekends we enjoy long runs into the countryside. Based in Framlingham, the club has regularly entered teams for local races and even has

individuals running international events, anything from 5K to marathons. As a member of Framlingham Flyers, you'll receive various benefits that include being able to attend regular training sessions and receiving coaching and advice from UK Athletics qualified club coaches, having the opportunity to represent the club in various competitions such as: Suffolk Winter Cross Country League, County, Regional and National Championships as well as at team relay events, receiving discount on race entry fees (usually at least £2), and have the opportunity to apply for a London Marathon club place (conditions apply). So please come along and join us. New members are always welcome. Running experience is not necessary, we cater for all levels of ability. For more information, please email Graham Wigley (Club Secretary) on: framflyerssec@ gmail.com or Jo Parden (Membership Secretary) on: jomparden@gmail.com. www.framflyers.org.uk

Get moving to support Suffolk Libraries! Suffolk Libraries has two opportunities for walking wonders or marathon marvels to get moving to support its work in the community this summer. Suffolk Libraries is looking for families and individuals to take part in the Rotary Club's Orwell Challenge in June and also has 10 places up for grabs for this year's Ipswich Half Marathon in September. The 47th Orwell Challenge will take place on June 23rd, and is open to anyone aged 17 or over. Anyone who signs up by February 29th will receive a

20% discount off entry fees. The Rotary Club of Ipswich East has been holding its annual charity walk along the banks of the glorious River Orwell for over 40 years. Challengers can choose from 13, 19 or the full 25 miles, or just the first three miles to the first base with every step of the walk taking in the beautiful Suffolk countryside. Last year, Suffolk Libraries Patron and former BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Lesley Dolphin took part in the challenge and raised over £400. At the time, Lesley said: "I'm really chuffed to have

completed the Orwell Challenge considering the hot weather! There are over 40 libraries across Suffolk that provide books, the use of computers, group events and a friendly face. I'm so pleased to help ensure they continue to provide their essential services that are available to everyone." To register for the Orwell Challenge, sign up on the Ipswich East Rotary Club website and choose which walk you'd like to take part in. Once registered, complete this short online form so that Suffolk Libraries' fundraising team can

support you on your challenge. You can support our Walking Wonders by donating to our JustGiving page. The Ipswich Half Marathon takes place on September 22nd and will start and finish at Ipswich Town's Portman Road Stadium. As a charity partner for the Ipswich Half Marathon, Suffolk Libraries is able to offer 10 exclusive places for free on a first-come-first-served basis. Entrants must be 17 years of age or over on the day of the event to take part and need to raise money for Suffolk Libraries. For more

information and to sign up, visit: www.suffolklibraries.co.uk/ support-us/fundraise-withsuffolk-libraries/ipswich-halfmarathon. Each registrant will receive a chip timer, finisher's goody bag and an exclusive t-shirt and medal. Once the free places have been allocated, general entry for the Ipswich Half Marathon starts at £30.50. Both these events are a great opportunity to get fitter, get outside in the fresh air, feel part of a team and to help raise money for the vital work of libraries across Suffolk.

Club subs are due now so please make payment to Sue asap. Open meeting tickets for April 25th, when the demonstrator will be Lorena Dyer - Lipstick, Powder and Paint, will be available at our next meeting, also from Sue. Details of our March 'Hands on Workshop' which will be run by our very own Paula are available on the notice board including a full list of requirements. We now also have a suggestion book available near the noticeboard. If you have any good ideas of places to visit, things to do, tips etc, please do write them in the booklet. Each suggestion will be discussed at our committee meetings. There will be a terrific celebration of our 70th anniversary of NAFAS Show, in Hunstanton in June. More details later. There will also be a Group Open Meeting on

June 28th. This will be held in Kesgrave Community Centre starting at 2pm. (Doors open at 1pm) The demonstrator will be Rekha Nando's 'Inspirations of India'. Again, there will be more details later. The winner of the practice piece for novice was Paula and for advanced was Jane Addison. Winner of the single stem was Lorna Davis. The rest of this report cannot be truly expressed to its full capacity on paper. The demonstrator was Gill McGregor from Herts Floral Jewels. From the very start, it was obvious we were in for a wonderful evening. Six of the most amazing arrangements came to life on the stage as Gill regaled us with stories from her life. If she ever tells you the "Boy eats Slug" story, just be prepared. They taste pretty much like worms apparently. Using her skills, Gill tried to teach us how to perform leaf manipulation on Kentia Palm. Her instructions were clear and concise, and she made it look really easy, but I for one, would make an almighty mess of it I'm sure.
