hope you are able to get out and enjoy your Group rallies, Members’ Casual Campsites or other outings with the beautiful weather we are experiencing as I write this. From the photographs members are sharing it would appear so. I also hope that you have missed this new surge of Covid and those that didn’t are now recovering well. Don’t forget, if you just want a few days away, then the Club has a selection of CLs and Nightstops which I hope you will consider using while on your travels. Why not take a photograph and send it with a short report to the magazine? I just ask that you take care and enjoy the use of your motorhome and the company you meet along the way.

CLUB NEWS Get a discount at Warners’ Shows when you camp with the Club If you wish to have a pitch in the MCC area at Warners’ Shows, please make sure you put Motor Caravanners’ Club on your booking form. This will entitle you to a discount for parking with the Club. Please be aware that Club Marshals cannot alter your booking, so unless you do this, you will not be allowed to park with us and won’t receive the Club discount.

Peterborough Show: Sunday afternoon and the Marshals can finally put their feet up.

The number of pitches is determined by the Show Organisers and the Club has little control over the area allocated, or to the condition it’s in. The Marshals do their pegging out before members arrive usually on a Wednesday. Thursday is when most members attend prior to the Show opening. The Marshals keep a few preferential spaces near to the toilets and access routes for members with wheelchairs but these are very quickly taken and once filled, others will have to use what is available on the site. Mick and Sue Pilkiw, Head Marshals and their team look forward to welcoming you to the remaining shows of 2022 which are as follows: • Malvern 19-21 August • Shepton 9-11 September • Lincoln 23-25 September These dates are for the Show – if you are camping, you can book though Warners from the Thursday. Wherever you camp, do call in at the Marshals’ tent to say ‘hello’, we do appreciate it.

OBITUARIES ROY WELLINGTON It is with great sadness that the South and West Wales Group share the passing of Roy Wellington on 20th June at the age of 78. Roy and Beryl joined the club in 2009 and became frequent ralliers making many friends. Roy was the life and soul of any party, always the first to dress up and encourage others to join in and usually leading the end of night sing song. He was always up for fun and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with Beryl and the family at this sad time. BRIAN GAUTIER Sadly a long standing member of our Avon Group, Brian Gautier, passed away on 11th May. Our condolences go out to Christine and all his family.

Haven update The Haven offer stands until our allocated pitches are fully booked, after which members would have to pay the site fees as published by Haven. Latest information from Haven is as follows: • Thorpe Park have removed any offers for the rest of this year. • Marton Mere – no pitches available weeks beginning 18/9 and 9/10 • Primrose Valley – no pitches available week beginning 18/9 • Green Acres – no pitches available week beginning 18/9

evening allows us to get our units set up and to get our bearings. Monday the work starts with the Groups being allocated their areas according to the numbers booked to attend. Then the actual pitches are marked out. Meanwhile, in

the hall, the tables and chairs are set up with spacing worked out to allow easy access and a view of the stage for all. Areas are allocated for the tea bar, the raffle and the insignia sales. This work is tasked and mainly completed over the first >>

two days. Wednesday was putting together the ‘goody bags’ and then the arrival of our first members; the marshals for the Group areas, who were shown the area allocated to them and given time to set up before congregating in the hall for the marshals’ briefing – including time to ask questions. Then the lists of members booked to attend by Groups were distributed, leaving the marshals an evening to settle in before the main opening on Thursday. The actual opening day of the 2022 National Rally arrives and the Working Party and Host Group prepare for the gates’ opening time. There is an area allocated for queueing for those early arrivals and when the gates open for members, entered in the order they had arrived. A busy day for both marshals and working party and the activities of the weekend commence with a “Welcome Cuppa” in the hall and a first time ralliers meeting.

The evening included line dancing to Dean’s Disco followed by Bingo and a tabletop quiz. Avon Group hosted “Play Your Cards Right” and the evening finished with music from Dean. Friday, many members took advantage of the coach trips to Lymestone Brewery, Middleport Pottery or Blist Hill museum. For those who remained on site the

Owl Experience Rescue Sanctuary brought some beautiful birds to be seen and have experience of handling them. A barn dance took place in hall in the afternoon and there was the opportunity to talk to Mark Shreeve, the magazine editor, and Ann Bond, about Members’ casual campsites, or discuss issues with Keith Poole, the Club Health and Safety Officer. >>

CLUB NEWS | NATIONAL RALLY 2022

The first business of the weekend was the Groups’ Conference where representatives from groups were able to bring items to the attention of CoM. Evening and time for more entertainment, with a start of line dancing with Dean’s Disco, then the Opening Ceremony and Banner Parade which formally marked the start of the National Rally. The evening continued with Triple Cream who provided music and comedy.

Saturday and the ever popular Silent Auction, gave members a chance to either sell items they no longer need or find something they really wanted, a win-win situation for all. Saturday afternoon and the main business of the weekend with the AGM and Members’ Meeting, commenced. Saturday evening and “Party Night” with a theme of the 1960’s (in line with our celebrating out Diamond Jubilee, albeit two years late). Members really put their heart and soul into their respective outfits and table decorations.

There were those who celebrated the 1966 World Cup victory, others marked the Great Train Robbery and the hall was filled with hippies and others attired in ‘60s fashion. Chuckletruck provided the entertainment and the dance floor was filled with members enjoying themselves. Sunday, a shuttle bus ran into Stafford for those who wanted to browse the shops or stock upon essential supplies. Those who had entered the homecraft competition submitted their entries for judging. CLUB NEWS | NATIONAL RALLY 2022 with members producing a wide range of exhibits in line with the guidelines. A difficult task for the judges. After lunch, tables were set up for the Garden Fete where we were visited by our ‘Queen for the Day’ to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. One of the tasks for our Queen was to present the Juniors’ Homecraft awards. There was also a Cream Tea and chance to buy Club Insignia and National Rally gifts. A little later, a large turnout arrived in the show-ring for our Fun Dog Show, with a varied assortment of our canine friends competing in the fun classes. The other competition of the afternoon was the Intergroup Quiz which was fiercely contested. The evening commenced with a hog-roast, which was followed by the evening entertainment of ‘MCC’s Got Talent’ where we discovered how varied and good

were the talents of our members. During this we held our Glamourous Granny and Knobbly Knees competition. Also throughout the weekend there was a Boules competition going on. Monday and our last full day, started with the prize-giving, first time National Ralliers Draw, and the Raffle. The Banners were then paraded again for the Closing Ceremony which finished with the Club song, “Always Be Best Of Friends”. But this was not the end, after a quiet afternoon we again gathered in the hall for our last evening of entertainment with The Replays, with Take Your Pick in the interval – an evening which was agreed to be a very successful one and members left the hall saying farewell. Tuesday and members wended their way home. We hope to see you all next year at Malvern.

AGM MINUTES Stafford Showground Saturday 11th June 2022

National Rally raffle The National Rally Commitee would like to thank the following companies who kindly donated prizes to this year’s National Rally raffle: Caravan Stuff4u; Brownhills; Nutt Travel; Elsan; Britstops; Roadpro; Warners; Wilko (Crawley); Cadac; Amc Motor Caravans; Glossop Caravans; Savaspaceuk; Smyths (Crawley); Red Funnel; Tesco (Crawley Community); DRW Electronics and also several donations from MCC members. 16 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2022

Agenda Item 1: Notice of this meeting Company Secretary: Mr Ron Harris read the Notice convening the Meeting. Chairman: Mrs Kate Jones M.B.A. welcomed members to the 59th Annual General Meeting and thanked the members for traveling to Stafford to support the National Rally and also for attending the AGM. Chairman: Everyone was asked to stand and observe a minute’s silence for absent friends and to think about how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected close friends and family over the past few years. The minute’s

silence was drawn to a close by the Chairman with the words, “May they rest in peace.” Chairman: Introduced the members of Council, Supporting officers and informed the members of their roles within the Council of Management referred to as (CoM). Secretary: The members and I would like to thank the members of the Council of Management for their time and commitment pledged to the running of the Club over the past few years during a difficult time for all. Agenda Item 2: Apologies for absence Derek Lawton (President of Severn Valley Group); Tony & Shirley Chapman Nottingham (Anglia Group); Michael & Frances Howorth (Sussex Group); Keith & Julia Belfield West Wickham (Kent Group); Maggie Bartlett (Sussex Group); Doreen & Steve Wolton (Essex Group) and Joyce Kendrick (Lancashire Group).

Agenda Item 3: Minutes of the 2021 AGM The minutes of the 2021 AGM were printed in the September 2021 edition of the Club magazine. It was proposed that the minutes of the 2021 AGM be accepted, without amendment, as a true and accurate record of the meeting. Proposed: Kim Remnant (Sussex Group) Seconded: Marie Johnston (Anglia Group) Carried unanimously with 4 abstentions. Agenda Item 4: Income & Expenditure Accounts for 12 months ended 31 December 2021 Anne Taylor: Director of Finance First of all, I would like to thank you all for your continued support over the last two difficult years. Membership: Despite continued restrictions being in place in 2021, we had a net gain of 420 members. The 2022 recruitment team at the Motorhome Shows have

increased membership numbers along with availability of on-line joining, not forgetting the bloggers on You Tube. The Council of Management are continuing to hold some of their meetings via Zoom, therefore saving on the expenses incurred by having face to face meetings. The Club Office continues to find areas where savings can be made; my thanks go to Ron and Julie for their continued efforts in this area. We are continually looking at cost cutting methods, but unfortunately as gas, electric and general running costs rise, there is a possibility that we will have to increase the membership fees. The last increase being in 2018. I am proud to say that we are constantly looking for additional income streams, and ways to provide a greater variety of services to our members. Any ideas you may have for these would be greatly appreciated. Reserves Surplus: £8,989 Accumulated funds: £273,617 Questions and subsequent discussions covered the accounts. Michael Davidson Treasure Group Scotland: Under section 12 stock, it is not very clear, is this the Insignia stock only or does it include general stock? Paul Maguire Financial Officer: This is the figure for the Insignia stock. Michael Davidson: Over the past three years, from 2019 to the present day, the amount of stock that was written off was £5713. You only had £4,000 worth of stock that was more than 12 months old, you have actually written off £3318 over the past three years. Could you please explain why you are writing off stock? Paul Maguire: This figure includes stock that we purchased at the end of the year which includes backpacks that are given away at the shows as an incentive for new members to join >> August 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 17

CLUB NEWS | NATIONAL RALLY 2022 the Club. The figures are calculated and taken off at the end of the year. Michael Davidson: Would it not be better to separate the two accounts so that it is more understandable as it looks like you have written off stock that is only twelve months old? Paul Maguire: We use the figures as asked for by Mr Derek Lawton who was not happy to revise that and use a different terminology. Michael Davidson: It gives a false impression of the accounts at present. You cannot give stock away and say that it is written off because it is not written off, it is given away due to marketing to entice new members to join the Club. Paul Maguire: We can group that altogether, that is not a problem. Sharon Heritage, Chiltern Group: If we have got £273,617 in the bank why are we talking about increasing membership fees? Paul Maguire: There are two reasons. Firstly, we have to show a

18 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2022

balanced budget year on year. If we eat into that every year, we would then be showing a loss in income and that’s the monies that we hope to use to purchase an office on land that would increase in value rather than paying out rent and which could be used as a CL site to generate income better than the return from the banks. The second reason is that we need several years of monies behind us so that should we need to, we have got a pot of reserves to ensure we can keep the Club going which we do not want to use so that the monies diminish. Nobody would want to do that. We need to confirm 24 months of reserves. Sharon Heritage: Would it not be better to delay the price increase as everything else is going up (gas and electric) until things settle down in a year or two? Paul: We only work on the basis that we can put it up, but we do not want to start using the reserves to hold

the price down, as we would then use the reserves which would then make it harder to purchase property in the future. At the same time, we do recognise that the cost of living is going up and it will be as a last resort that we would do that. Michael Stock, Avon Group: Item 9 on the accounts Marshalls and Other MCC Business. Is there a reason that this cannot be broken down further? In 2020 it showed a cost of £1,090 and in 2021 you recorded £10,338. This is a huge amount of money not to be shown in more detail. The heading above for (CoM) meetings is broken down into three sections, whereas the Marshalls are lumped together under one heading. Paul Maguire: The heading above covers (CoM) who are the people up here who have to attend our meetings and the rest is 100% Marshalls and show expenses; there really nothing else there to enable us to break it down any more. To break it down further would not be any help to the people of this room. Michael Stock: Well, can that be made clear in the accounts as that is not what it says? Paul Maguire: That terminology has been agreed with the auditors and that is how we have to present it. We would have to ask to change the way it’s presented. Michael Stock: Can you do that? Paul Maguire: We will ask. >>

CLUB NEWS | NATIONAL RALLY 2022 Brian Bartley, Lancashire Group: Under the present circumstances, surely, we shouldn’t be looking at buying land and CLs when the members themselves are telling you that they are struggling. Should we be spending the money that way, or should we be keeping our membership together rather than dissipating by putting the fees up? It is not necessary. How long have we gone on without a CL or property so far, how many years? Chair: We are trying to give our members more facilities as well as rallies. At present we are paying a rent for our Head Office, whereas. if we owned it, that would be less expense to the Club. If we can get sufficient space, we could have a Head Office plus a CL which would bring in an income instead of paying out money in rent. I must point out that we have not said that the membership fee will go up, we have said that it would be reviewed. The Finance Committee review the membership fee every year as we have to ensure that we are able to show buoyant accounts. Carole Bennett, Sussex Group: I have only been a member since 1999 and every time I have come to an AGM this land has been mentioned somewhere within the meeting. I don’t know if this is magic land. In 1999 it was probably a £100k and now it may cost £500k and all that time we have had the money in the bank. I agree with what the previous person said, and you should use it to keep the membership fee down as your members do not want the fees going up. Chair: We will take into consideration that the members in this room do not want an increase on the fees when we are making that decision. Teresa Guyver, Essex Group: As far as buying land, Ron Harris, the Secretary, is not going to be Secretary for ever. Do we need to be buying land in Malvern? Could 20 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2022

we look for land elsewhere? Chair: We never said it would be Malvern, it could be anywhere. Michael Davidson, Scottish Group: Who is the actual auditor? Chair: It states the name of the auditors within the blue book as Fawcetts Chartered Accountants. Michael Davidson: It actually states in the book that they are not auditors and they did not audit the accounts, they have taken your accounts at face value and they are unaudited accounts. Paul Maguire: Can I just say that you are quite correct, a mis-terminology on my behalf, but what you are saying at face value that is not true they go through the figures finely and they put these accounts through. They do not do a full audit. This has been discussed many times before at the National and it was made quite clear that they are not auditors that carry out an accounts review, my mistake for calling them auditors. Michael Davidson: I thought you had internal auditors rather that external auditors, but the external auditors that you have here state categorically that they are not auditors; they have not audited the accounts they have looked at them and put them in accountancy

speak for you, that is what they are claiming. Chair: Paul said that he used the wrong terminology, we use a Financial Examiner, the same as the Groups use a Financial Examiner. Michael Davidson: Is it an internal or external examiner? Chair: External. Fawcetts do a financial examination of our accounts. Anne: If you do find some land do the members get a vote on it or will you make the decision? Chair: I would say that we would put the proposal to the members but it may be down to the Directors to make the decision with external advice to ensure that the return would be worthwhile to members. Carole Westerman, Lancashire group: As a limited company which The Motor Caravanners’ Club is, and registered with Companies House you will by law be required to present a full set of audited accounts. Paul Maguire: That would depend on the total turnover of the company and in this case it is not required. They are external and we have complied fully with Companies House and fully with the Companies Act.

Sue Turl: Avon Group: Could you clarify what you mean by a piece of land? Is this a blank piece of land which you are looking to build on? We have two very hard workers in our office with Ron & Julie. Could you not purchase a small property to turn into an office? Chair: We are looking into several options and we have been looking into this for 6 or 7 years at least. Sue Turl: Yes, and the cost of property has gone up, and up so trying to buy today is a lot different. I do not understand why you can’t purchase a small property. Secretary: You have to remember that we are not getting the return from the banks in interest anymore which used to offset the increases in the membership fees. However, if the right property comes along, we can invest some capital and see a greater return having the capital working for the Club to help offset

the rising costs. I would like to move this subject along to the members meeting now as we need to vote on the accounts and move on. The Chair of Finance recommended that the Members accept the 2021 Income & Expenditure Accounts Report as presented. Proposed: Tina Botterill Seconded: Brian Herschell. Majority For; Against 0; Abstentions 0; Proxy-For 13 Agenda Item 5: Confirm the Appointment of Auditors/Financial Examiner. It was proposed that Fawcetts, Charted Accountants, should continue as the Companies Financial Examiner. Proposed: Michael Davidson. Seconded: Carole Bennett. Majority For; Against 0; Abstentions 0; Proxy-For 13

LeoBay Campsite

Highfield, Rushenden, Alsager Avenue, Queenborough, Kent ME11 5LA

A CAMPSITE WITH A DIFFERENCE... LeoBay is quite unique as it is a campsite with fitting facilities, so if there’s that little something you need doing from replacing a bulb to a complete conversion we do it all. Our experience goes back 40 years. Our core experience is in auto electrics and vehicle security as well as vehicle diagnostics, we use factory diagnostic software to solve your problems. Trained in both vehicle and mains voltages we can also inspect and test your mains hook up too! Gas that’s no problem either! Now there’s a service that makes life simple, so next time you need help, come and stay at LeoBay, a nice cuppa on arrival, we will sort your problems while you relax on our 1st class site. There’s even a courtesy vehicle to use during your stay at LeoBay! LeoBay is a site in a million, completely built by us and independent, so all are

welcome whether you’re a club member or not. We have drawn on our 25 years as motorhomers, collating all the best bits from the many sites we have visited over the years. The pitches are all wide hardstanding, with a 10amp hook up and your own grass area to spread out on, the site sits up on a hill over looking the sea with amazing views. On site facilities include a unique summer kitchen, where everyone can chat, relax and eat under cover, there’s a barbeque and pizza oven for you to use, or sit and relax by the open fire with a bottle or two. We like to make sure you’re warm and comfortable so the shower block is heated, with two large rooms, and to top it off the gardens are just splendid. Pets are welcome; the dog walks along the shore are great, there’s plenty of wildlife to watch. So as you can see it’s well worth a visit at just £25 per night all in.

GROUP NEWS COORDINATOR: Polly Coleman T: 01502 725841 E: groupnews@themotorcaravannersclub.co.uk Post: Motor Caravanner Magazine, Countrywide Publications, Reydon Business Park, Reydon, Suffolk, IP18 6DH. Deadline: 5th of the month for inclusion in the following month's magazine

ANGLIA Just a little report on the National – with Peter taking two firsts in the Homecraft and an Anglia quiz team put together by Derek at literally the very last minute before the start beating our opponents by half a point to take the quiz trophy. 20 vans came to Heacham Sports and Social Club including a visitor from S and W Wales. It was a free and easy rally since we had no power to do tea etc. However, all enjoyed themselves. With an excellent bus service to Kings Lynn, Hunstanton and further afield, there was something for everybody. The Social Club was well attended as was the Friday night bingo in the village hall and several of our members found it extremely profitable. Fortunately, they were not chased back to the site by pitchfork wielding locals! On Sunday, there was a football match for the men to watch and several took advantage of the Sunday roast in the club. A great “back to basics” rally which was appreciated by all. Thanks to Derek, Carol, Bob and Thelma for stewarding. 21 vans came to Bury St. Edmund’s with several visitors from Kent, East Midlands, SW Wales and Chiltern. Most went into town to enjoy the gardens and shopping. Several games of KUBB were played over the weekend. When the social club bar was open, it was well attended and Saturday evening there was a duo who were very good. Sunday morning the stewards put on bacon rolls and tea etc. which was appreciated and there was a dinner available in the club which several took advantage of. A relaxing weekend provided by the stewards Ken, Rose and, owing to the other stewards having Covid, Keith and Teresa standing in. Scribe Derek.

Upcoming rallies: 12-14 August: Lingwood Village Hall, NR13 4AZ. Start 1pm. This rally is NOT bookable. 25-30 August: Hunstanton Community Centre, PE36 5BW. Start 1pm. This rally is BOOKABLE via Teresa on 07739 463321.

AVON Brecon Cricket Club, 1-6 June. The Queen’s Platinum Celebration Jubilee rally: The committee welcomed 40 vans, including 20 from Avon to Brecon C.C. less than half a mile from the town, alongside the Monmouth canal. Most of the vans were adorned with flags and bunting. Pete Turl organised a Jenga competition which after several rounds had to be abandoned due to the adverse weather conditions (wind and rain). On the Thursday afternoon, many congregated outside the host’s gazebo for lots of cake in the warm sunshine. There was a lovely walk into the town where many of the shops had decorated their shopfronts and one had a lady inside, dressed as her majesty, waving to people as they passed. Friday evening, we had use of a fine hall shaped like a large wooden tepee inside. Bingo kicked off the evening followed by a dingbats quiz organised by Roger and Rowena. Mark and Penny provided background music. Saturday afternoon, judges from the committee awarded Ray and Juliet a bottle of wine for the best decorated motorhome. In the evening we had Play your cards right, hosted by Sue with her assistant Dolly Dealer alias Kevin. Hilary and Rowena sold the raffle tickets and ran the raffle. Once again Penny provided the background music. Heavy rain overnight continued until late morning on Sunday, when the committee put on a wonderful Sunday lunch including wine and beer, provided by the Avon MCC. GROUP NEWS delicious. During the celebration, we raised a glass to the memory of Brian Gautier, a long-standing member of the Avon group who had recently passed away, condolences to Christine and family. Brian’s favourite record was played, ‘Rockin All Over The World’, by Status Quo, to which many danced or rocked along with. Sue hosted a Jubilee quiz which was fun and enlightening. There was a prize for the best dressed table outside a van which was won by Mr and Mrs Crocker and Mr and Mrs Drake. Mark and Penny’s table was adjudged the best dressed table in the hall. After the rally was over, several people stayed on before travelling on to the national at Stafford. Weymouth and Portland RFC rally 22-27 June: Thanks to Mark and Karen who hosted the rally with the kind help from Caroline and Richard who stepped in at the last minute to co-host, as Mark and Penny were laid low with Covid. The weather was sunny and warm as the 33 vans arrived 18 of which were Avon. Unfortunately, all of the planned events had to be postponed due to the ongoing threat of the latest Covid variant, but hopefully can go ahead in the not-too-distant future. Everyone who attended the rally were very understanding and so it was a lovely free and easy event. Many people walked along the footpath into Weymouth and along the promenade to the town centre. There have been improvements to the rugby ground with a caddy shack café next to the site serving delicious food at reasonable prices. Beside the rugby field is a nature reserve with a lake. Wading in the lake late in the evening was an egret hoping to catch a fish, while five of his friends were perched in nearby trees. It caught nothing for the ten minutes I stood observing it. Take care, Allan. Cheddar rally: 30 motorhomes arrived in glorious sunshine at the Cheddar Strawberry rally. It did not take long for the awnings and chairs to come out. Late afternoon there was a gathering outside the committee vans and Sue (our chair lady) welcomed everyone and held a few games of bingo. Friday was very hot with many walking into Cheddar or using their bus passes for a trip into Wells. The weather forecast for Saturday was not favourable and a decision was made to hold the raffle and strawberry cream tea Friday evening. This was a good choice as Saturday was colder and rainy - typical British weather! Sunday was an improvement, with quite a few leaving early as they had travelled quite a distance to join us, Others took advantage of the Cheddar car boot held just outside the camp site to find a bargain they did not know they needed before leaving the rally. Thanks for the help from Mark and Penny who delivered the strawberry and cream to the site, Sue, Hilary, and Rowena for running the raffle and strawberry cream tea. Thanks for the assistance from Alan and Marilyn collecting the rally boxes and equipment for the Weymouth rally. Much appreciated. Roger. Upcoming rallies: 5-10 August: Walcott RFC, Lansdown, Bath, BA1 9BJ. 10-15 August: Balloon Fiesta, Parsonage Farm, Long Ashton, Bristol, BS41 9LU. 18-22 August:

Cotswold School, Bourton-on-the-Water, GL54 2BE. 25-30 August: Warren Farm, Dawlish, EX7 0NG. Please refer to the Avon group website for booking details and latest updates, or contact our secretary Karen, by text 07971 540 909 or by email: avonmcc@markandkaren.co.uk.

CHILTERN Only one rally to report on this month as we had to cancel the planned meet at Padworth Village Hall due to the low number of bookings. If we do not get enough Members interested, we cannot, unfortunately, afford the cost of hall hire, etc. As part of Chiltern’s 60th celebrations, the Committee decided to reduce the price of the rally at Friar’s Court to £10 for the weekend and our thanks go to Tina for her rally report. We arrived to park under cricket bat willows on a lovely sunny afternoon. With the Thames flowing alongside the site. It’s a beautiful place to camp. 12 vans attended including one from West Wessex. Saturday started off dry and some ventured out for a walk or bike ride, others quite happy to sit and relax. Unfortunately, early afternoon the weather changed and rain spoiled the rest of the day. The evenings were spent chatting in the shelters and testing our brain power with film quizzes. Thank you to Carole, Roy and Angel for an enjoyable relaxing weekend. Upcoming rallies: 5-7 August: Aylesbury Rugby Club, Weston Turville, HP22 5RN. 19-21 August: Fir Tree Campsite, Warmington, OX17 1JL. 25-29 August: British Sugar Sports & Social Club, Bury St. Edmund’s, IP32 7BB (Bookable). 2-4 September: The Cottesloe School, Aylesbury Road, Wing, LU7 0NY (Bookable). 15-22 September: French Holiday Rally, Ile de Re (Fully booked)

EAST MIDLANDS National Rally at Stafford Showground June 2022: It was lovely to see so many East Midlands members at the National Rally. So many in fact, that we won the Sammy Snail Trophy for the Group with the most motorhomes on site! That wasn’t our only success of the weekend; Congratulations to all those who won their category in the Homecraft competition, especially Champa and all the team that contributed to the Group Entry - A well-deserved winning entry. We had success in the Boules, with Geoff and Anne Workman taking first prize and our quiz team did well to be in with the top three teams. With plenty to do, good weather and meeting up with friends old and new, it was a rally to remember as we finally celebrated the Club’s 60th anniversary. Cromford June 2022: 44 vans attended our Cromford Charity Rally. Weather was sunny on our arrival on Friday. We were greeted by our stewards who gave us a cryptic van quiz to keep us busy over the weekend. Friday evening, we were welcomed to the rally by our vice chairman Paul, then played bingo followed by a quiz which was won by Brian >> August 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 27

GROUP NEWS and David’s team. Background music was played by disco Dave whilst the members made welcome our first timers and members from other groups. We woke Saturday to a miserable day weather wise. Coffee morning then a free day to go to the nearby attractions or just to the pub for lunch. Saturday evening, we were entertained by Danny S, a fantastic singer. What a brilliant night! Sunday was to be a busy day. Firstly, it was a coffee morning then the raffle draw and the result of the van quiz which was won by our visiting friends from Yorkshire - well done. This was followed by the annual boules competition. The sun came out to make it a pleasant afternoon. The champions were Paul and Jane who were presented with the new cup by our chairperson Anne. Afternoon cream tea followed which was prepared by Carol and Dot helped by Dave and Mandy and there was a tombola with loads of prizes to win. In the evening it was East Midlands got Talent. And what talent - we have got some brilliant singers and Rob with his guitar played a few songs. Monday saw some of our members leaving. There was a coffee morning then a free day until the communal barbecue at teatime. In the evening, there was a music quiz prepared by disco Dave which was won by the members from Yorkshire. Joyce then did a quiz with a colour theme which was won by Bob. Background music followed whilst we all chatted and said our goodbyes ready for our departure on Tuesday. Thank you to our stewards Les, Joyce, S tan, Pauline, Carol and Dave for providing an excellent charity rally at a beautiful venue. Yvonne. Upcoming rallies: 5-7 August: Dunham Millennium Centre, Low Street, Dunham-on-Trent, NG22 0UD. 12-16 August: Bakewell Showground, Agricultural Way, Bakewell, DE45 1AH. August: Lancashire invite to Lytham St. Anne’s (see Lancashire website for details). 2-4 September: Suttonon-Trent Sports & Community Centre, NG23 6QX. 9-11 September: Welbourn Village Hall, Beck Street, Welbourn, Lincs, LN5 0LZ. 16-18 September: Hillstown Hall, 12, Nesbit Street, Hillstown, Bolsover. EAST WESSEX 25 vans including visitors from seven other groups joined our Jubilee rally at Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley. Bunting and flags everywhere helped create a mood for celebration and people explored the country park, full of families and other groups intent on enjoying themselves. On Friday afternoon, we held our own street party. Tables down the centre of the pods groaned under the weight of the fantastic spread provided by all of us. With many wearing red, white and blue we sat outside together in the sun, enjoying the food, and toasting her Majesty. We stayed outside listening to John’s music until about 8pm. It was a lovely celebration with a great crowd of people. Thanks to hosts Graham and Mary/Eileen and Charles. 13 East Wessex vans went to the National Rally at Stafford. Our theme for party night was the ‘Great Train Robbery’ which won the cup for best party night table. Such a shame Vic and Yvonne who did so much towards it, weren’t able to be there. Jim took first prize in owner/ dog lookalikes and Janet’s socks came second in another competition. Well done everyone! And the tombola raised enough to cover expenses too, so thanks to all contributors. Janet rescued the next rally at Bamptons Farm in Lymington by offering to host at the last minute, so grateful thanks are due to her. 17 vans including visitors from six groups arrived in blistering heat far too hot to put up pods but being midsummer, we enjoyed the long day sitting together outside until late. The heatwave continued into Friday. The next field was uncut and full of wildflowers and butterflies, and skylarks could be heard. One member spotted a flock of geese overhead; the rest of saw the red arrows practising flying in formation, an easy mistake to make. On Saturday, the clouds rolled in, rain threatened, and the wind got up. Luckily, we hadn’t put the pods up, but one awning came to grief as the gusts got stronger and it took four of us to wind it in. Overall, it was a relaxing rally with people doing as they wanted, enjoying the sun or going walking, cycling, eating out or visiting the Isle of Wight. Sadly, the sudden change in the weather put a dampener on it and some left early. Calling potential hosts: There’s now four nights free camping on offer on longer summer rallies. Upcoming rallies: No need to book unless stated. All welcome. Please check our website www.eastwessex.uk for any late changes. 11-15 August: Bamptons Copse Primary School, Newchurch Road, Tadley, RG26 4HN. Four-night field rally with easy access to Basingstoke. £10 pupn, £9 singles. Arrivals after 1pm. 25-30 August: Hayling College, Church Road, Hayling Island, PO11 0NU, Bookable five-night bank holiday field rally. Swimming, windsurfing, sailing, funfair, pitch and putt, WW II Heritage trail. Cafés and restaurants. Buses to Chichester and Portsmouth via Havant. Foot passenger ferry to Portsmouth, Isle of Wight ferry from Portsmouth. £11 pupn, £10 singles. Arrivals after 1pm. Bookings (Allen) 07411 955133.

Essex group: Queen’s Jubilee weekend dog show - All dogs behaved extremely well

ESSEX What a weekend we at Essex had over the Jubilee weekend. We arrived on Thursday to find that the marquee was up and just had to be decorated. We had a good number of motorhomes arriving throughout the afternoon. After dinner, we went over to the marquee for a game of bingo and some music. Raffle tickets were on sale. Friday the weather was good but a bit windy, so it was decided to have the street party in the marquee. The tables were brought in and decorated and what a lovely sight it was. At 3pm, members came over to the marquee dressed in their various outfits of red, white and blue and union jack tee shirts. We had tea and coffee on the go and cucumber and ham sandwiches provided by Jan and Peter came round which were lovely thank you both. Cakes on cake stands were set out on the tables provided by Essex. It was a great afternoon with lots of fun and we had a toast to the Queen. In the evening we had fun and games in the marquee provided by Jan and Peter. Jan had made a hamper and raffle tickets were sold in the afternoon. The lucky winner was Ann Collins who was more than pleased to win it. It was a great evening with great company. Saturday the weather was again windy but sunny. It was a free day to explore the area. In the evening it was over to the marquee for the weekend raffle, we had it early as there were numerous prizes and because we had a singer Carol Harper during the evening. Carol Harper started at 7:30 pm and she was pleased that so many were up dancing so early in the evening, but then Essex does know how to party. After a fabulous evening with Carol, it was off to bed. Sunday morning, we had bacon or sausage rolls cooked by John and Alan eaten in the marquee as again it was windy. These went down well, and as usual Essex provided too many and some people were lucky enough to have seconds. After the morning rolls, Bob had his dog show which was outside – luckily. There were quite a few entrants, in fact we had an invisible dog on a leash, a dog on wheels and great fun was had. The winners of the small dogs were first: Rusty, second: Poppy and third: Reba. The winners of the large dogs were first: Tefley, second: Jake and third: Tia. Overall winner was Poppy. All dogs were given a treat. The dog show was judged by Elaine McDowell. Thank you Elaine, for a hard job judging the dog show. Sunday

saw some members leaving as they had to go to work on Monday or had other arrangements. In the evening, we had ‘Play Your Cards Right’ which went down well. Another game of ‘Pass The Bucket’ which went on for too long and nobody was quite sure of the rules. The money it was all agreed by the members that it went to the Air Ambulance. Monday and everyone departed either home or to other parts of the country. John. Upcoming rallies: 5-7 August: Hook Farm, Mundon, CM9 6PN. 19-21 August: Weeley Homestea Lakes, Weeley, CO16 9JN. 2-4 September: Pleshey Village Hall, CM3 1HJ. 16-19 September: Grange Farm, Thorpe-le-Soken, CO16 0HG (bookable rally). 7-9 October: AGM, Chelmer Valley School, CM1 7ER (bookable rally).

KENT Sissinghurst Rally: Hosts David and Antionette. Thank you, very good quizzes again. Fabulous weekend in the beautiful Kent countryside. Amazing weather Thursday and Friday. Saturday cooled a little with an occasional light shower but was still pleasant enough to sit out and watch the local cricket team have fun. Saturday night saw heavy rain and thunderstorms but thankfully, the ground drainage was good. Sunday, slightly cooler and windy. Sunday, we had the use of the clubhouse for coffee. 11 vans attended, one from Essex and Sussex and nine from Kent. Upcoming rallies: 5-7 August: Headcorn Airfield, REPLACEMENT for: 5-7 August: CANCELLED Bredgar and Wormshill Light Railway. 25-29 August: Dane Court School, Broadstairs, CANCELLED due to no hosts. 9-11 September: Bridge Farm, Appledore. 23-25 September: Hole Park, Rolvenden. 14-16 October: Oasis Academy, Sheerness AGM. 9-11 December: Greatstone Primary School, Greatstone. 30 December-2 January 2023: St. Richard’s School, Bexhill-on-Sea (with kind permission of the Sussex Group). New Year rally – Bexhill: Please note this is a bookable rally as we are restricted to number of vans. Please contact the Group Secretary Jan, to reserve your place. Committee: A number of committee members have decided to step down this year after serving this group for several years. It is therefore essential that a new committee is found. LANCASHIRE Halsall Rally - A celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend: Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the rally (30 ‘vans attended) as we were very involved with the organisation of our street party. I have seen and heard much praise of the rally. National and AGM 2020+2 the Clubs Diamond Jubilee +2: I believe that 36 Lancashire ‘vans attended, and we just missed getting the trophy for best attendance. We did get the trophy for our craft entries thanks mainly to Val, Christine, Beattie and Michele. It was a super event with good weather and almost too much to do. Our tea bar raised money for our charity, the Southport Inshore Lifeboat. Thanks to who made donations and all helpers. Upcoming TC’s: 19-29 August (10 nights): Arnold KEQM School, Lytham St. Anne’s, Lancashire, FY8 2DT. Large venue, no need to book. £15pn. Red Rose Holiday and Cabaret Rally. No bar. MOTORCYCLE 9-14 June: The MCC National: Although we did not meet up till the 9 June, the planning for this event started a month before. As a group, we’d decided that our theme for the fancy dress and the table decorations for party night would be ‘Flower Power’. Martin set up a national WhatsApp group for all those MCG members attending. There was plenty of chatter and pictures of the flowers they had or were making. They really gave it their all. We chatted about the ride outs we had arranged too. The excitement for this event was building. Finally on Thursday 9 June, we all arrived and were parked up. The bikes were unloaded and conversations with old and new friends began. Many had not been with the group since last year, so had lots to catch up on. On Friday, 18 bikes went to the National Memorial Arboretum. We all wore our MCG t-shirts and took photos of the group on the steps to the Memorial Wall. This two-hour visit was just a taster and a return visit with walking boots will be required to see all its glory. On Friday evening, we gathered in the hall and had a great spot at the front near the stage. Keith and Martin carried our banner in the parade, with four others. As our MCG banner passed our group, there was loads of cheering. We certainly enjoyed the event. Following the AGM on Saturday, the table decorating began. Everyone brought in their flowers and with directions from Tina, they were laid out. What a wonderful flowery sight it was. Another group went to the supermarket for the buffet supplies. Great teamwork. After dressing up in our costumes, we assembled the group ready to walk into the hall together (see photo). A very happy bunch! Then we took our places on our table. The buffet foods were distributed, and the beer/wine flowed along with excited chatter and laughter. We all felt proud to be part of the MCG. “It was a really cool night man!” On Sunday, Stevie D and Suzie B led a ride out to the Staffordshire Bikers Breakfast Meet at Port Vale Football Club, Stoke-on-Trent, for a free bacon bap! On return to site, we lined the bikes up near the main hall for photos and public viewing. That evening, we gathered again for the hog roast and the talent contest. Chris from our group decided to enter with her guitar and played along to the tune of Mustang Sally, accompanied by three great dancers. Our last ride out was to Barton Marina, Burton-on-Trent for lunch, led by Steve and Sue Louch. Comments from some of our members (taken from our group WhatsApp set up just for this event): “We’ve had an amazing time with you all, the ride outs, teamwork, camaraderie, we have not laughed so much in ages. Can’t wait for the next one.” “What a wonderful time we have had! Such good company! Many thanks to all the group!” “What a great time we’ve had at Stafford, I can’t thank everyone involved in our group enough for the fun, laughs and teamwork we’ve all had this weekend.”

NENE VALLEY 11 vans joined the Nene Valley group for the National Rally at Staffordshire Showground. Nene Valley would like to give a big thank you to the organisers, working party and all the helpers, for making an enjoyable time. The hog roast was especially appreciated. We look forward to next year’s National Rally at Malvern Showground. The Party Night theme was the 1960’s, and we chose “the death of steam on the railways” as our entry. Thanks to Paul, Tony and Pam for bringing the model railway items, and to everyone who dressed for the period. We received many compliments for our table, and Pat’s dried-up British Rail sandwiches looked a treat! Many thanks to all for making it a very enjoyable evening. NORTHERN COUNTIES Hello everyone, the ‘Edwards’ Scribes are back (easing the load from Chairman Dave)! The Group has had a busy time in June. We celebrated The Queen’s Jubilee with a rally at Stanhope which was well attended and hosted by the Davies’ and the Haverts’ – well done to all.

The 59th AGM and National Rally marked the Diamond Anniversary of the Club and was held at Stafford Showground, attended by 27 Northern County members with a trio of new members. Our marshals Kim and Allan and John and Laine did a wonderful job ably parking everyone up and arranged a Sangria and Tapas afternoon after the AGM. The weekend was a great success with lots of entertainment and meeting up with old friends. Friday evening, cash bingo saw success for Edna and Chuck. Our group stewarded the silent auction on Saturday, and thanks go to all those who volunteered. Our Homecraft results were as follows: Kim McKelvie came first in garden upcycling, and second for a decorated glass, and a third in the wildcard entry; Sheila Cottrell came first in papercraft, and Mabel Ball came second for her decorated cake and third in the papercraft. Our group entry came fourth. Apologies if we have missed anyone out! Well done to everyone who entered/contributed, with recognition from the judges for all their efforts. We had two teams in the intra-group quiz with Team B coming seventh and Team A coming eighth. After the National, several MCC members set off to France for a rally in the Vendee organised by Neil and Jo Huggon. Our final rally in June was at Redcar Rugby Club with 18 vans including two Yorkshire, one Chiltern and new Northern County members Gary and Anne Hedworth. Well done to Barry and Sheila Pascoe for hosting. As with many other groups, this is also our 60th year and we are holding a Jubilee Rally at Braithwaite in Cumbria from 17-22 August, to be hosted by Mark and Sue Lang, and Dave and Pam Brack (so you never know what to expect!) The venue is on a bus route with buses to Keswick and beyond and a pub in the village. We have three nights of live entertainment, a party night with optional dress-up theme of the sixties. There will also be a games afternoon and lots of other things planned. Booking is required due to the limited numbers; you can book via our website: www. >> Motorcycle group

We were 40 motorhomes in total all promptly parked and settled for the weekend. Friday night, we met up in the hall for a chat and a picture quiz, the craic was good. Saturday, many members made their way into town and there was dancing in the evening. Sunday, we met in the hall for coffee, chat, number plate draw and quiz result. Birthday greetings to our Treasurer Gary Little and Robert McEwan, also 51st wedding anniversary wishes to Iris and Robert McEwan. Congratulations to Pete and June Coleman and their new van, they haven’t been at a rally since Portrush, also welcome back to Cynthia and Norman Willis and Evelyn and Roy Brennan lovely to see you all again. Entry draw winners were Bryan Chew and Victor McFadden, winner of the quiz Martin Murphy. The weather was kind to us, rather windy but dry. Many thanks again to our hosts for a great weekend. Anne and Robert Grant. Omagh Rally 24-26 June 2022: We arrived in Omagh to a very warm and friendly greeting by our hosts Thelma and David Beverly and Robert. 33 vans in total. A good seasonal average considering many on family holidays etc. Friday night bingo in the hall with Beverly proved to be very educational and entertaining. Robert and Beverly donated a huge teddy bear in aid of the chairman’s charity, which John Cooke won £21 was donated to charity. On Saturday, many spent the afternoon in Omagh town or just conserving energy to dance the night away to the musical Maestro Paul Ralph. The raffle had prizes aplenty with many delighted winners. Coffee morning on Sunday was conducted by Gary in the absence of Chairman Joe after which David announced the winners of the number plate draw won by David Morrison and Albert Coulter. and June Boyd Ballybogey. Also, William and Lissa Dyer were congratulated on acquiring their new van. A big thank you to our hosts for a great weekend. Dessie and Ruth. Regents House Newtownards rally: Arriving in Newtownards, we were welcomed by hosts Joe and Florence McClune and co-hosts Ian and Liz McKenna. Robbie Hewitt was thanked by them for also assisting in getting 44 vans parked up. The evening was dry and warm so a good opportunity to get the barbecues out and enjoy what it’s all about. Brilliant company, relaxed atmosphere, food and drink. Despite not getting the larger hall on Friday evening, a good turnout for the tabletop bingo was thoroughly enjoyed. Saturday morning’s Members Meeting was well attended. Joe gave reasons for calling same and the Minutes of Meeting will be available on the webpage shortly. Many members spent the afternoon enjoying the very pleasant weather by congregating around their motorhomes. I think a few refreshing drinks were seen to be consumed. A few ventured into the town where the market was being held. The retailers must have been happy with trade as I saw quite a few bulging shopping bags. Saturday evening again saw a good turnout and the dance floor was certainly well used as music by Steve Farrell and Geri Kane went down a treat. Coffee morning on Sunday welcomed new Member Sam Arlow. Liz McKenna and Agnes Adair was wished happy birthdays. Number plate draws were won by Robbie Hewitt and Annette Hemphill. Quiz by Florence Little. Joe was pleased Roy and Jenny Dowie. Paul and Lesley Rixon. David Kyle-Ewing and Victor Lennox have come forward as being willing to be co-opted unto this year’s committee to help our depleted numbers due to illness. So once again, a big thank you to them and to our hosts this weekend. Everyone was full of praise for another successful rally. Irene Hewitt.

NWM&NW Only one rally to report on this time and it was a great one! The Club’s long awaited 60th Anniversary finally took place at Stafford Showground. As this is our area, we were the hosting group and a gathering of six vans arrived on Wednesday to marshal our spot and to act as reception on the gate. Many thanks to Mike and Linda, Pam and Bob, Geoff and Brenda, Jean and Dave and Sue who worked their socks off especially on Thursday afternoon, in the wind and rain, when the field beyond the gate was crammed with vehicles waiting to come in. Jean did a good job of keeping tea and coffee supplied to the teams. Another big thank you to the supporters who took over some of the shifts on the gate on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There were still vans to arrive on Sunday. The entertainment throughout the rally was enjoyed by all. The party night was fantastic with all the tables decorated and lots of colourful costumes on a sixties theme. A great job was done by all the helpers who made decorations or decorated the two long tables. Two brave

GROUP NEWS teams entered the challenging inter group quiz with one team coming fourth and the other thirteenth. Well done and thank you for taking part. As our group has quite a few dogs, it was nice to see many in the fun dog show and they came away with a good selection of rosettes. Dotty won a first, a second and a third in different classes. Meg, Billy and Doris’s Doberman also won rosettes. Doris had a thank you from the working party for her litter pick around the site. On Sunday evening, we had a most enjoyable hog roast. There was plenty to eat and everyone was served quite quickly despite the large number of people. The juniors were kept busy by Maria and Gill on Saturday and Sunday with Edward and Henry Slade (grandchildren of new members Michael and Susan Smith) winning a good selection of medals for their efforts in various craft activities, so well done to them. Agnes Hulme won second in the bag category in the adult home craft. As a group, we came away with two shields. The Hosts Trophy and the Founders Trophy, a complete surprise. This was the result of a complex calculation involving number of vans and distance travelled to the venue and possibly some other variable. A huge thank you to you all for turning up to celebrate and make it a memorable rally. I think we had in excess of 40 vans, and this included some new members. We hope to see you in the future. Upcoming rallies: There is no need to book these rallies. 5-7 August: Riverside Caravan Park, Kidderminster Road, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, WV15 6BY, bar drinks in the club house, £10 pupn. 26-30 August: Llangollen Pavillion, Abby Road, Llangollen, LL20 8SW, £15 pupn. A short walk into town with many attractions. 30 August-4 September: Salford’s Children’s Holiday Camp, 86 Victoria Road West, Prestatyn, LL19 7AG, £12 pupn.

SCOTTISH Hello fellow members, I hope you are keeping well. Firstly, unfortunately Cullerlie rally Echt has been cancelled due to lack of support. Secondly, it’s the time of year when members should consider standing for committee. At this point in time most of the present committee intend to stand down. Most of the work has been carried out by a few over the past difficult three years coping with covid. Members retiring deserve praise and a rest after a tough period. Our rally at the Clink in Auchtermuchty was attended by eight Scottish and two visitors from Anglia and NW Midlands and North Wales. This meet was hosted by the owners and members Ken and Rosemarie Swan. I cannot comprehend why it’s been so long since we last used this venue as hosts, they are second to none. Members who attended were overwhelmed including our visitors. I wasn’t, as this is normal when we visited this venue before. No need for members to leave the field as activities were laid on daily. Coffee mornings every day with Rosemarie baking scones, crumpets toasted and a surprise birthday cake for a visitor.

A field was laid out with a track to test your driving skills in Kens buggy. Golf and Crochet with a difference in long grass. A test of skill trying to roll a tyre into a flat ringed area, also throwing horseshoes over a peg in the grass. At night, socials were held in a barn where we played games and Ken played his keyboard, sang and told us stories and history about the region Since this rally, I have had been asked a number of times when we are returning… That says it all! Another successful meeting was held at Whitehills with ten Scottish members attending. We also had a few visitors - past members Eric and Agnes Blackhall whom I invited for coffee morning. We also had a visit from Rebecca Smith Dutton who was crowned Miss MCC at the only National Rally held in Scotland at Ayr racecourse in 1991. Great to see you all again, over 500 vans attended the National in Ayr to the surprise of the COM. A good time was had by all having the onsite hall for social use. A chippie was collected one evening, two coffee mornings. Thanks to Bill and Jan Bain for organising this and hosting when they could. Keith and Mary Smith also helped and played a game for all on the Sunday night. All help was appreciated as due to unforeseen circumstances Aileen, and I were the only committee attending. Our next meet is at the Scout field within the grounds of Brodie Castle from 18-22 August inclusive. Regards Squeezebox.

SEVERN VALLEY The national, as ever, was a resounding success. There were close to 400 motorhomes, so a very big thank you to all the stewards and marshals for making sure everyone was parked up in the right area. Severn Valley had 23 vans on their own field plus members who were parked with friends or on the disabled field. We were allocated two tables in the hall as we had about 50 members to cater for and almost everyone joined in decorating the tables. Severn Valley members were outstanding in the craft section. Of the junior members Jamie Butler won two bronze medals, Jayden Tranter won two gold, two silver and one bronze and Joseph Tranter won four bronze and one silver. In the adult section, Mal and Roger Cutler won first and second. Prizes in the book-folding section. Roger got a merit for his mosaic and a mention for upcycling a wellington boot. Mel, Roger, Maggie and Graham came second. In the overall group entry for their Christmas tree display. Gill Warren entered the knobbly knees competition but sorry to say her knees were not knobbly enough, so she didn’t win. Jenny Barlow won third. Prize with Tommy for best dog in the age group and Keith Savage won best in show with Harry. Well done to all entrants. Sadly, our chairman Tony had to leave early due to a family emergency but otherwise a fabulous time was had by all. Marshalls Chris and Fred Allen went straight on to host the post rally at Bourton Football Club where we had 34 vans. 26 Severn Valley, one NWM, one East Midlands, one >> August 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 33

GROUP NEWS Anglia, one E W Wales, one, S W Wales and two NC, four cancelled due to other commitments and there were four no shows. But a good turnout, nevertheless. The weather was excellent and quite a few members decided to walk into the village. Evenings were spent mainly sitting outside chatting and having a little drink or two or three or joining the locals in the club bar. Thank you to Michelle for making us welcome. 1 July saw us at Raphaels in Evesham with Tina and Barry Robbins hosting. There were 23 motorhomes of which we had 20 SV, one Nene, one East Midlands, one SW. The weather turned dreadful on Saturday and rained most of the day. A small group managed a walk into Evesham late afternoon after the rain eased off. Sunday morning, we managed to have a raffle and a coffee morning before the rain came again. A few of us stayed for Sunday lunch at the site cafe which was excellent. The next rally is Upton Blues festival 15-18 July. This is non bookable, and everyone is welcome.

SW PENINSULA Hello and welcome to this August newsletter. There is another rally to add to this year’s programme: 17-20 November (3 nights) Fox & Hounds, Okehampton, EX20 4HF, Christmas Shopping Rally. £15 pupn without EHU, £20 with EHU. We have the use of the skittle alley. If you would like to host this rally, please get in touch with Barbara. There were three vans from our group at this year’s National. Thank you to Ian for marshalling and to Sandy and Tony for displaying the SWPG banner in the parade. Julie and John Rowntree hosted a successful rally at Lady’s Mile from 21-27 June. Here is their write-up: “21 vans arrived for the holiday rally at Lady’s Mile Campsite, Dawlish. Beautiful weather welcomed all on the Tuesday and everyone soon settled into their deckchairs to enjoy the sun and possibly a glass or two of lemonade! As the week progressed, members ventured from the site on bikes, buses, boats and boots (sandals). They travelled as far as Brixham and Exeter City taking in the beautiful southwest scenery. A game of bingo was enjoyed (the caller has been offered a professional position in a well-known bingo establishment… not) on a lovely sunny evening. Thursday and Friday saw a change in the weather but again members ventured off site to visit local towns. Sharon and Sandy celebrated their birthdays with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs breakfast - very nice. A quiz evening and raffle was held on Saturday evening, again in lovely sunshine - a fierce closed battle was fought between the ‘village idiots’ and the ‘speckled hens’ (alias fowls) - the speckled hens eventually clinched a win after four tie-break questions! Everyone said how much they had enjoyed this venue and rally. Thanks to all for taking part and being so lovely. Best wishes to all, John and Julie.” A selection of photos from the rally were posted on Facebook. The admin would love to post any photos from rallies that you take, together with a short caption. 34 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2022

S&W WALES 9-14 June: National Rally at Stafford: After a ‘covid delay’, the 60th National Rally was held at the Stafford Showground where our marshals, Elizabeth and Colin assisted by Eifion, welcomed 17 vans on a sunny but windy day. During this busy rally, some made trips into the surrounding area while others participating in the daily programme including Craft Workshops. Irene Tanti and Elizabeth Davies enjoyed the craft sessions producing cards which were entered into the Rally Craft Exhibition. Congratulations to Irene on her first prize and Elizabeth on her second prize which were presented at the closing ceremony. There was plenty of opportunity to meet and catch up with old friends and new from other regions and, for many, the first socialising since covid began. We all came together to enjoy the evening entertainments. On the last day, our marshals organised an afternoon of tea and cakes for our group which was enjoyed by everyone; thanks to Jenny and Roger for the strawberries and Elizabeth and Colin for the cakes. 24-27 June: Carew Airfield: The hosts Sue and Keith with Heulwen and Jeff welcomed five vans to this normally popular rally. The hosts organised a quiz for the group on the Saturday evening but, unfortunately, the large boot sale on Sunday morning was a complete washout due to very heavy rain. Perhaps the weather forecast had been the reason for the low numbers but those that attended had a good time. Upcoming rallies: 12-14 August: Brecon Sports Assoc. Fields, LD3 7EL. SUSSEX A warm welcome to you all, hope you are enjoying the summer season in your vans and at home. We are now well into our regular motorhome adventures, still exercising caution but with renewed hope for future escapades in our vans. June saw the National MCC rally at Stafford Showground. A welcome return to our annual escapades, where we were joined by Kent and a few members from other groups. The weather wasn’t as kind as it could have been but was mostly dry, if a bit cold. Ann Edwards received a standing ovation and an emotional response for her tribute to the MCC, both past and present, with memories of sixty years to call upon. Well done, Ann, for your longstanding commitment and support to your fellow motorhomers. Although we didn’t win the table prize on party night (congratulations to East Wessex for an impressive Great Train Robbery table), our ‘Diamonds are forever’ theme, suggested by Kim and ably assisted by Charlotte, Ann, Jackie, Carole and Janet displayed our considerable talents. Mary and Alan did Sussex proud with their music during the talent night, with many joining in. The trips were very popular, especially the brewery trip, not surprisingly! A thoroughly enjoyable experience overall. Our next foray into the motorhoming world saw a return to Henley, a popular site by the Thames. We had mixed weather, but it didn’t dampen our spirits, with picturesque views by the river of a variety of boats, including powered canoes, ‘too posh to paddle’ (thanks for that quote, Debbie). We were joined by friends from Essex, West Wessex, Anglia, Yorkshire as well as Kent to make it a wonderful time. Jo. Upcoming rallies: 19-21 August: South Harting Memorial Field, GU31 5LN. A firm favourite with the Sussex group. 26-29 August: St Richards School, TN40 1SE, 60th Sussex Group Anniversary rally. Limited places, book with Marilyn Harris (Rally Officer) and cheque to Carole Bennett (£30). Please note NOT Bexhill College as stated in July magazine. Oops, sorry. Check our Facebook page, Sussex Group of the Motor Caravanners Club for any extra details.

WEST COUNTRY A small attendance of seven vans were at the Diamond Jubilee National Rally and all had a great time. A good showing at the homecraft, and we managed to get one first, one second, one third, and a well done. And in the group entry we also received a third. Thanks to the members who helped to do the group entry, it was a surprise as all the entries were excellent. Party night was a sixties theme and we shared our table with SWP and a good time was had by all. A rally was held at the Tiverton Rugby Club from 21-26 June, with a total of 13 vans. There were ten from West Country, one from East Midlands, one from Avon and one from Northern Ireland. A mixed bag of weather starting

with very hot sunshine, followed by two days of showers. Most people were able to go out and explore the lovely town and the lady from Northern Ireland took a canal ride on a horse drawn canal barge which she said was an amazing experience. On Friday night, a fish and chip supper was enjoyed at the club house followed by a quiz prepared by Rosemary and Roy. The quiz was won by Lyn and Roy. Saturday evening a game of giant Jenga followed by a Domino nines championship organised by Ann and Barry. Everyone joined in and it proved to be quite exciting. The overall winner was our Chairman Bob with the lowest score. Coffee morning on Sunday was held in the clubhouse including a good raffle. Our thanks to Ann, Barry, Rosemary and Roy for such a good weekend and everyone joined in the fun and had a good time. Upcoming rallies: 10-14 August: Newton Abbot Rugby Club, Rydon Industrial Estate, Newton Rd, Kingsteignton, Newton Abbot TQ12 3SJ. 25-30 August: Bude Rugby Club, Pencoolen Meadow, Bude, Cornwall EX23 8QG

There was sunshine and showers and some breezy days. Campers took advantage of the numerous paths and cycle ways to go into West Bay and Bridport. Some caught the Jurassic Coast bus to explore further afield. Roger entertained the group with some music on Monday afternoon. On Tuesday, a coffee morning was held and the raffle drawn. My thanks to Stephen for this report and photo. Upcoming TCs: 10-15 August: Brassknocker Campsite, BA2 7BL, £7 per night. YORKSHIRE Only seven vans attended our rally at Burn Gliding Club, due to a few vans cancelling due to ill health. It was a warm but very windy weekend. We had a first-time visitor from the NWMNW group. On the Friday night, members used the Gliding Club Room for a good catchup. Most of the members made use of the local pub on Saturday during the day and the night. Some members stayed on to enjoy Sunday lunch before having a safe journey home. Thank you to Heather for hosting. Only four vans that booked through the club attended Duncombe Park steam rally. We were parked up amongst the sea of caravans, motorhomes and some tents attending this rally organised by the Great Yorkshire Traction Engine Club. The location in Duncombe Park with the house in view and an easy walk into Helmsley. There were food stalls and a bar tent. Entertainment was provided on the Friday and Saturday evening, whilst the main event was on the Saturday and Sunday. There was a great selection of traction engines, both full-size and miniature, motorcycles, cars, lorries of all shapes and sizes and tractors. In addition, there were fairground organs playing and singing and dancing performed on stage at various times throughout the weekend. The event was very well run, and everyone enjoyed it despite the few rain showers. Thankyou Paul for hosting. ith its soaring limestone arches, beaches littered with prehistoric fossils, picture perfect, horseshoeshaped coves and idyllic beaches that stretch for miles, it is easy to see why Dorset is so popular with motor caravanners. Just across the border in Somerset, lies the Exmoor National Park and the Cheddar Gorge in the Mendip Hills. Large flat expanses of land, including the Somerset Levels, make the county a great biking destination, whilst for those who prefer to ramble, the Blackdown and Quantock Hills beckon. Little wonder that the twin sister counties boast such an incredible number of sites in which a touring van can spend the night. This part of Britain’s southwest accounts for quite a large chunk of the country and there is a great deal to do and see, so you could be forgiven for feeling overwhelmed when planning a trip here. We chose to base ourselves at the delightful Bagwell Farm, a tranquil, rural >>

>> campsite with stunning views across Chesil Beach to the English Channel beyond. Rural yes, but with easy access to Weymouth and its sandy beaches less than 5 miles away, it is a location well worth considering. From here, we made day trips to Shaftsbury, Lyme Regis, Bridport and Portland Bill, and at no stage did we find the distance or the driving to be stressful. Well laid out on terraces, to avoid a sense of overcrowding and offer the best view to everyone, the camp site is quiet, yet packed with facilities, including a bar and bistro restaurant that make it a campsite we plan to return to. The world was introduced to the Georgian grandeur of Weymouth during the London 2012 Olympic Games. The town’s fine seafront provided Olympians, and those that came to watch, an impressive backdrop to the sailing events. Today Portland and Weymouth are boating centres attracting a wide variety of craft. The lighthouse at the end of Portland Bill is an important sailor’s landmark. Delightfully, Trinity House have opened the red and white tower to the public and having done it ourselves, we recommend a guided tour climbing the 155 steps to the top of the tower itself. The view is fantastic and the stories surrounding Portland and the 38 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2022

Portland stone has been quarried here for many years and has been used in the construction of many famous buildings around the world. St Paul’s Cathedral in London and the United Nations HQ in New York are two of the most notable examples. While quarrying stone continues here today, there are many disused quarries nearby.

Tout Quarry is one that is well worth a visit. This former quarry is now a nature reserve and has been transformed into a stone sculpture park. Stroll around it freely and marvel at over 60 pieces of sculpture created by – among others – Antony Gormley. Just four miles long by a mileand-a-half wide at its broadest point, the island of Portland is steeped in maritime history and

Walkers and cyclists will enjoy the Portland loop of the Southwest Coast Path, which circles around the island mapping out a varied 9.5 mile trail of dramatic, rugged cliffs, nationally rare plants, hidden coves and stunning views. Be sure to visit Nothe Fort; Built in Victorian times to protect Portland Harbour, it features a network of underground passages and is steeped in history. Not only that, it provides stunning views out towards Portland and over Weymouth Bay. Fancy enjoying something to eat or drink with views over the water? The Boat That Rocks has a great outdoor terrace from which to enjoy a few sun-downers. Equally enticing, the Jailhouse Café, surrounded by cliffs and a moat, makes a stunningly

dramatic venue for a meal. We prefer to home-cook in our van and so for us, a trip to Dorset Shellfish was in order. This familyrun business only opens to the public for short periods, but the crab and lobster are delicious and

well worth seeking out. Inland from the coast, Dorset is peppered with history and interesting villages. Cerne Abbas is one! A charming and quaint village it grew around a great Benedictine Abbey, founded in AD 987. Today, the villages claim to fame is the world-renowned Cerne Abbas Giant, a 180 ft high ancient chalk figure carved out on a steep sloping hillside nearby. The origins of the giant are a mix of fact and speculation. Some believe that the rather rude giant is a Pagan fertility symbol! Others claim it pays homage to the Roman god, Hercules. Yet there is no known historical record of its existence before 1694, and modern studies suggest the giant was first made by the Saxons between AD 700 and 1100. Whatever its pedigree the Giant is now owned by the National Trust, who operate a carpark from where you can walk up to the figure. Ruined remains of the Abbey can still be seen nearby and are well worth a visit. Shaftesbury, close by Thomas Hardy’s Blackmore Vale, is more >> August 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 39

Market day is Thursday but whatever day you visit, do find time to drop into Swan’s Yard, named after a noted coaching inn that once stood on the site. Back then, it was a place full of activity where travellers stopped on their journey for refreshment and rest,

and where locals met to exchange news and views. This hubbub of activity has been captured today as Swan’s Yard has become known as the creative heart of Shaftesbury, specialising in unique artisan shops. Now a development trust, it has been set up to develop, promote, and support community facilities and projects with the Swan Gallery, the focal point of these endeavours. Another nearby town, Sturminster Newton, also dates from Anglo-Saxon times and was referred to in the Domesday Book as Newentone. We missed its Monday market but made up for that by visiting the nearby Woodbridge Farm, home of Dorset’s famous traditional Blue Vinney cheese. Made from cows’ milk, Blue Vinney is a hard, crumbly, and rather delicious cheese, hand-made by artisans, the likes of Michael Davies. He resurrected >>

Abutting the Dorset border with Devon, this pretty seaside resort, boasting beautiful beaches, breath-taking scenery, a fascinating history and a picturesque harbour, is not very motorhome-friendly. While banning motorcaravans from just about every car park, the town council has a rather indifferent attitude to visitors in general which – given the number of businesses in the town that survive on tourism – is somewhat strange. The good news is that neighbouring Charmouth has the completely opposite view. We found we were most welcome there. However, it shows just part of the adorable landscape of Kintyre…which is often thought to be an island, though it is actually a long and >>

The west (along the A83) is low coastal with many beaches. The East along the B842 is much hillier with areas of dense forest. The B842 Claonaig to Cambeltown [or Cambeltown to Claonaig in our case] inspired Paul McCartney’s ‘The Long and Winding Road’. It may only be 41.5 miles in length, but it takes a long time to go from end-to-end, and is not for the faint-hearted motorcaravanner. It is predominantly single track with passing places, is very undulating and has lots of hairpin bends. Our advice is to avoid ‘bunching’ on the road and to not follow immediately behind fellow motorcaravanners as you won’t both fit in to some of the passing places. In addition,

be prepared to reverse up steep inclines when necessary. Worth the effort though! Frances and Michael Howorth investigate the increasing trend towards converting commercial cargo carrying vans into campervans.

W

hat we, as members of the Motorcaravan Club have known for some time, has been officially proven; that Campervanning, as a leisure pastime, has never been more popular. Figures released by the National Caravan Council, (NCC) have officially concluded that record numbers of motorhomes and campervans were sold last year and that bookings for campsites in the UK this year, are already up by 33% on last year’s figures. Yet another survey, this time by the commercial website, We Buy Any Motor Caravan.com, shows that with demand fast >>

Another conversion from Celtic Motorhomes Below: making the best use of space >> outstripping supply, there is an increasing tendency to convert a commercial van into a campervan, either by gifted amateurs or professional organisations who have made it their business. Aside from the “I told you so moment” that grips us all when we hear that sort of news, it does cause commentators like us to ask some questions. What, for example, is the best van to buy for a campervan conversion? How much does it cost to convert a van into a campervan in the UK? What is best; a home conversion or a professional one?

Van choice

As the owners of Voyager, a Fiat Ducato converted for us by Celtic Motorhomes in South Wales we were surprised to discover that when it comes to world numbers of vans converted into campers the Ducato, its Peugeot counterpart Boxer and Citroen Relay variant was so far down the popularity list. Ahead of it, in the polls, comes the Volkswagen Transporter, Ford Transit, Renault Traffic and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Only the Vauxhall Vivaro and the Nissan NV200 trailed behind our choice. It is, after all, a matter of personal choice, but it is no coincidence that the square sided Ducato, Boxer, Relay vans, which after all emanate 56 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2022

from the same factory, are the choice of professional converters who are keen on maximising usable internal volumes. Its not hard to convert a van into a campervan. After all, at its most basic, a campervan is nothing more than a van with a bed, a table, and a portable cooker and all of those can be loaded into, or taken out of a van, inside twenty minutes. What is difficult is creating a good camper that gives you pleasure when you use it, and if our description of the basic van rocks your boat, we say go for it and enjoy. For the rest of us however, vans must deliver ease of use and comfort, to provide those relaxing moments we all desire. Those with handyman skills, a comprehensive tool kit and hours of time to devote to their cause can, of course, convert a van into a campervan

Stylish interior from SuperMoon Campers themselves. Self help groups, videos, books and forums abound to help those so inclined. But we do not fall into the clever-with-hands category and so we sought out a professional conversion. Here, the world is your oyster when it comes to choice! And the sky is the limit when it comes to budget. So it pays to have an idea of what you want and what you can afford, before you begin the hunt.

Bespoke interiors

Harry Carter-Owen at SuperMoon Campers in Newhaven is a one-man campervan conversion operation whose simple aim in life is to build beautiful, bespoke, crisp handmade campervans with a passion for

In Horsham, Sussex Campervans is a somewhat larger conversion company making headlines with an all-electric campervan conversion. Their fully featured camping car with seating for four and sleeping for two based on a compact Nissan eNV200 van conversion does not require fuel tanks of any kind. It runs completely on electricity generated from various sources of clean and renewable energy. They may not be the first campervan company to convert an electric van into a camper, but theirs is the first all-electric campervan conversion.

Eco-friendly

camping. After working for a large company building VW campervans, lovelessly knocking out one VW T6 every week, Harry realised that that style of campervan and the company’s way of working was not for him, so he decided to set up his own conversion company and now couldn’t be happier! He says, “I genuinely love camping so I always consider how the campervan will perform in the real world, not just so that it looks good in my workshop or outside your house. I want to create a space that, when you close the door, you’re not in a van; you are in a cosy open plan apartment, with everything in the right place and no faff when it comes to bedtime! You simply, get into bed, just like a house and go to sleep.” “I built one for a customer, using

a long wheelbase Fiat Ducato as a base. I created what he wanted which was a 2-berth van with heating, solar power, and loads of space and storage. “But because his campervan was a personal thing, and he knew what he wanted I was able to add in a Belfast sink and use reclaimed wood to give the interior the desired rustic feel. I help clients from beginning to end, to make their design work best for them. I have installed wood-turning stoves, solar panels, gas heating, electrics and all the other things you’ll need to make your campervan a little home on wheels. I’m happy to take on small day van conversions, up to full, live aboard conversions.” He adds, “I’m open minded when it comes to ideas and visions and can work in various styles.”

The goal at Sussex Campervans was to create an electric campervan that really was eco-friendly. Daniel Lopez-Ferreiro, the company’s Managing Director, says, “We wanted to create something that cut through all the noise and delivered on what it was supposed to. No internal combustion engine. No fossil fuels. No more carrying cannisters of LPG, diesel or petrol. No trying to sell a campervan that wasn’t completely green. Just a camper that ran solely on solar power and other sources of green energy.” And they seem to have succeeded. Aside from the fact that the eNV200 doesn’t use any gas or fossil fuels, the first and most notable difference is that the range is better when driving round town than it is on a straight run. This is the opposite of a fossil fuel vehicle. The van has an impressive turning circle of just 11.1 metres making light work of tight corners and side streets that you might find on campsites and off-grid locations. “The future is electric,” says Daniel confidently. “Buying our all-electric van conversion can be tax efficient as well. There is no fuel duty to pay at the pumps, road tax is set at zero, there are no congestion charges to pay, and you may even qualify for the UK plug-in car grant.” Success in the conversion game >> August 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 57

OUT & ABOUT | MOTORHOME CONVERSIONS >> can cause consternation for some when it comes to finding the right van that meets your needs. Many dealerships are reporting a lack of road-ready stock and long waiting lists for popular models. Celtic Motor Homes in Caerphilly have been so successful in selling their custom campervan conversion that they have closed their waiting list to those seeking new vans. Operations Director Jacqui Jukes says, “It is simply not fair of us to take deposits from customers and then tell them they are unlikely to see a van this side of 24 months.” She adds, “We have been lucky. Past customers have shown their vans to friends who have flocked to us asking for conversions, but demand is far outstripping our ability to supply without lowering our build standard. And that is not something we ever plan to do.” >>

OUT & ABOUT | MOTORHOME CONVERSIONS

Craftsmanship and attention to detail are important in conversions >> Value For the most part, a campervan conversion is a good investment. Unlike cars, campervans tend to hold their value with some owners reporting making their money back, or even making a profit, when they come to sell them. Like all vehicles, they do cost money to maintain and keep in shape and when it comes to considering a purchase, budget consideration ought to be

given to annual running costs which can be a lot higher than the family car costs. Campervans are popular because they allow independence as you travel. They offer freedom to rethink the itinerary as you progress, and the ability choose how long to spend in each place while doing so. With the air travel industry in disarray and airport chaos causing havoc for those

planning holidays abroad, the future of campervan conversions is looking rather rosy.

Making your motorhome wheelchair accessible Making a motorhome wheelchair accessible can be a huge challenge if you don’t know who to speak to. Knowing what is or is not possible requires expert knowledge and talented engineers says Brook Miller Mobility. If you have a much-loved leisure vehicle with lots of happy memories which you can no longer use, it can be upsetting and frustrating. However, don’t despair, this is where an expert can help. Below are some of the possible adaptations to consider: Wide access entry doors If your motorhome allows, engineers can fit a wide access door to allow for wheelchair access in addition to a lift or ramp. Wheelchair accessible lifts: The most popular access option is an

62 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2022

underfloor wheelchair lift, which can stow away discreetly underneath a vehicle when not in use. Access ramps: Wheelchair access ramps can also be used for access into leisure vehicles. A telescopic or folding ramp can be easily stored when not in use. Internal mobility equipment: Hoists are the most requested piece of mobility equipment, which assist with transferring a wheelchair user between their chair and other areas of the vehicle. Accessible wet rooms and toilets: If space allows a wheelchair accessible wet room, grab rails and support systems can also be fitted, plus toilets compatible with shower chairs. Profiling electric beds: Beds which

have adjustable back and knee rests, plus height adjustability options can replace your existing bed to provide home-from-home facilities. Driving adaptions: These enable a wheelchair user to be the driver and can include hand controls, steering aids, and adaptions to the seating to assist with transfer. Custom built motorhomes If for any reason it’s not possible to adapt your vehicle, or you haven’t yet purchased one, why not look at a custom design and build a brandnew motorhome to your exact requirements. For more information about motorhome adaptations or custom-built designs contact: Brook Miller Mobility on 0800 064 4454, visit www.brookmiller.co.uk or email carol@brookmiller.com
