Well December already, I don’t know where the year has gone. Most Groups will be enjoying their Christmas parties in the next few weeks and I hope they all go well and fun is had by all.
AGMs are over as well and, in most cases, we had volunteers willing to take on the posts within the Group committees. I again wish to thank these volunteers who work to keep Groups active.
One subject that was raised to me when attending a group AGM was the topic of dogs running loose at rallies. I would just like to remind you that dogs must be kept on leads when outside your unit on rally fields. Please ensure that your animals are under control at all times.
After that point, I would like to lighten the mood and wish all members a happy and peaceful Christmas.

UPDATE FROM YOUR COUNCIL OF MANAGEMENT
It’s hard to find any good news about the economy these days with raging inflation, rising prices and constant media forecasts of doom and gloom on an almost daily basis. It seems like every visit to the supermarket reveals a higher price ticket on the things we would consider essentials and a visit to the garage forecourt can quickly dampen the spirits!
Businesses are feeling the strain too with ever increasing operating costs and the MCC is no different. The simple answer is for businesses to pass on these higher costs to the customers, or in our case the members, like the two major clubs have done, but we are reluctant to make an already bad situation even worse.
It may be that, in the future, we will have to regrettably consider an increase in membership fees and, should this become necessary,
OBITUARIES
PETER OGLESBY & KEN RICHARDSON
Anglia regret to announce the deaths of Peter Oglesby and Ken Richardson who have both died on the 31st October. Peter was a long serving member of Anglia Group until he had to give up and Ken had supported Anglia for many years. We send our condolences to their families.
Derek Clarke, Anglia Secretary
HEATHER NORTH
It is with great sadness that the Isle of Wight Group wish to inform you of the recent death of Heather North after a short illness. Heather
we would keep this to an absolute minimum. In the meantime, we will continue to implement all possible cost saving measures and review our financial position at quarterly intervals. The Chancellor’s new tax increases are unfortunately here to stay for the time being but there are many factors that could bring about an uplift in the economy so we will all hope for better news, and better times to come.
If your MCC membership is coming up for renewal in the meantime, a great value option is to renew via a 5-year membership at £170 to lock in the cost saving at the current price.
We will continue to keep you updated and wish all members a peaceful, enjoyable, and stress-free Christmas and we hope that with the New Year comes reasons for renewed hope and optimism.
was a vibrant and lively member of the group always full of fun and laughter. Our condolences go out to family and friends at this very sad time. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Heather Jennings, Isle of Wight Group Secretary
RAY BARRETT
Sadly Chiltern group announce the very sad passing of our friend and fellow member Ray Barrett. Ray’s funeral was attended by a contingent of Chiltern members on 1st November. Ray really did enjoy his rallies with the group, and, along with Pam, was a regular attendee. Our thoughts are with Pam and their family.
NOTICE OF EGM FOR AVON MEMBERS
As Avon Group failed to elect a Committee at its AGM on Saturday 22nd October 2022, an EGM has been arranged at which it is hoped members will come forward to stand as Committee Members. Failure to do so will result in the Group folding –please don’t let this happen.
The EGM is to take place at 11am on Saturday 14th January 2023 in the Orchard room at Baileys Court Activity Centre, Baileys Court Road, Bradley Stoke, Bristol BS32 8BH
Valid MCC membership cards will need to be shown on entry.
This venue is not far from Jct. 16 of the M5. It will be a day meeting, therefore there is no overnight parking.
This is the one last chance to save Avon Group! So come on Avon members, don’t let our Group disappear. There’s a great rally programme arranged for 2023 by our Rally Officers and ample funds in the bank account to provide enjoyable events – don’t let it go to waste.

LeoBay is quite unique as it is a campsite with fitting facilities, so if there’s that little something you need doing from replacing a bulb to a complete conversion we do it all. Our experience goes back 40 years. Our core experience is in auto electrics and vehicle security as well as vehicle diagnostics, we use factory diagnostic software to solve your problems. Trained in both vehicle and mains voltages we can also inspect and test your mains hook up too! Gas that’s no problem either! Now there’s a service that makes life simple, so next time you need help, come and stay at LeoBay, a nice cuppa on arrival, we will sort your problems while you relax on our 1st class site. There’s even a courtesy vehicle to use during your stay at LeoBay!
LeoBay is a site in a million, completely built by us and independent, so all are
welcome whether you’re a club member or not. We have drawn on our 25 years as motorhomers, collating all the best bits from the many sites we have visited over the years. The pitches are all wide hardstanding, with a 10amp hook up and your own grass area to spread out on, the site sits up on a hill over looking the sea with amazing views. On site facilities include a unique summer kitchen, where everyone can chat, relax and eat under cover, there’s a barbeque and pizza oven for you to use, or sit and relax by the open fire with a bottle or two. We like to make sure you’re warm and comfortable so the shower block is heated, with two large rooms, and to top it off the gardens are just splendid. Pets are welcome; the dog walks along the shore are great, there’s plenty of wildlife to watch. So as you can see it’s well worth a visit at just £25 per night all in.

Abumper number of `vans at this year’s show, but we will be concentrating on what’s not been exhibited before and/or featured in Motor Caravanner. Particularly important just now, as none of the major manufacturers held new model launches or press review days in the UK. Be aware that the quoted
prices are OTR (on-the-road), are for guidance only and subject to change, and that any change is unlikely to be in the purchasers’ favour! Please note that most are built on an under-3,500kg chassis… so can be driven on a normal ‘car’ driving licence, unless the description states ‘Group C1 driving licence required’.
Moving Fordward Supply issues with right-hand drive SEVEL chassis (Fiat Ducato/ Peugeot Boxer/Citroën Relay) has been the catalyst for converters to re-evaluate the Ford offer.

found in its favour. The fact that it sells well into the commercial market means that it is a good bet for long-term motorcaravan ownership as NOS spares and pattern parts will be available for decades after production ceases. First ‘off the blocks’ is the new Voyager range of three coachbuilts (soon to be four). Featured [1-3] is the 7.85m (25’ 9”) Voyager 584. It features four travel seats and four sleeping-berths which include two longitudinal permanent singlebeds at the far rear. Voyager 594 is the same length, but replaces
the single-beds with a peninsula double. Price is from £67,495. Max payload: 424kg. Contemporary interior ambience, with a high standard specification at this price point, including innovative ‘kit’ such as the electrically-operated rise-and-fall (folding) table.
Roller Team has decades of experience building on Ford’s finest so they were ‘ahead of the curve’ when changing underpinnings on their Auto-Roller range. Pictured is the Luton overcab A-R 707 [4], chosen because it is truly familyfriendly with six adult-sized sleeping
berths…including bunks [5], as well as six travel seats. A clever idea was to engineer the lower bunk so that it can become a full-width garagestyle storage area with exterior access. Ford-based 707’s are slightly shorter than the outgoing Fiat-based models. Payload is 510kg.
Bailey of Bristol, unveiled two new models in their Adamo range, The two berth 6.099m (20’ 0”) 60-4 [6 & 7] and the four-berth 7.485m (24’ 6.75”) 75-4 [8]. Both arrive with four travel seats, the 155bhp engine and automatic transmission.

Windscreen prices: Adamo 60-4 £73,499; Adamo 75-4 £75,499. Dethleffs has chosen the moniker ‘Just Go’ for their new six-model Ford Transit underpinned range of coachbuilts. Apart from its instant appeal, the name ‘Just Go’ is declarative, the equipment level is such that for comfortable touring, one doesn’t need to add anything,

above the lounge-diner to boost the sleeping accommodation to five. Prices commence at £66,800, as exhibited: £75,218. Payload on the standard model is 500kg and it’s 6.99m (22’ 11.25”) long.
Finally in the coachbuilt section – Killig – a new sevenmodel 130bhp VFM range from the Italian Rimor brand. Exhibited by retailer and importer M & C (Hull) was the range-topping five travel seat Luton overcab Killig 695 [11-13]. Stretching the tape to 7.308m (23’ 11.75”) it boasts five sleeping-berths consisting of twin longitudinal permanent singles at the far rear, a transverse double in the Luton, plus the converted lounge seating makes a (wide) single. Are you driving illegally?
When did you last check your motorhome weight? Ministry figures suggest up to 80% of motorhomes may be operating overloaded! Drive an overloaded motorhome and you not only risk a fine, you also risk your insurance and the safety of you and your passengers!
When looking to buy your next motorhome, insist on an accurate, up to date weight ticket! The brochure may state a MIRO or payload allowance, but these f igures can be out by as much as 5% (average 125kg). This is more likely to be against you than in your favour, so it is always recommended that you visit a weighbridge to check your vehicle’s weight.
Need to uprate to carry more payload?
If you think you might have a payload issue, we can help. SvTech is able to increase/uprate the payload allowance on many makes and models.
Behind the scenes of every SvTech uprate, testing of a vehicle is carried out to create a ministry recognised test report, which is then use to cover subsequent uprates. This report and testing is vital in supporting an uprate, and is a legal requirement. Do not be fooled into thinking it’s just a paperwork exercise, as offered by others.
Reaching 70? Need to consider downrating?
SvTech can downrate your motorhome to 3500kg should you not pass, or wish to take, your medical. You must first weigh the motorhome to find out what payload you will have available at 3500kg . For further guidance on downrating please visit our website at www.svtech.co.uk/motor home downrates
To promote road safety, SvTech designed a free to use, Load Distribution Analysis (LDA) program which helps the user to know their likely laden weight and how best to position their goods about the vehicle to avoid an axle overload . Clever conversions
New to the UK in the PVC (panel
van conversion) sector was the impressive Voyager Z [16-19] from Krakow-based Globe-Traveller. The Voyager Z is on the XL version of the LWB van and it has the highest Fiat roof plus a made-in-house stylish moulded crown and overcab. The rear doors have been replaced with a one-piece moulded panel with boot-style exterior access. Four ergonomically-correct and adjustable travel seats and four sleeping berths. Standard payload
is 440kg but if you’ve Group C1 on your driving licence, there is an extra-cost upgrade available offering a mighty 860kg of payload. Price as exhibited but in RHD was £95,995. Globe-Traveller was started by the legendary ex-motorbike racer and rally driver Sobieslaw Zasada. He’s still at the company helm…aged 92 years young!
All the way from sunny Tuscany and exhibited by Wandahome, was this appealing Giotti-Line 54T [2023] which…as the model number suggests…is just 5.42m (17’ 9.5”) long. The design team have excelled themselves at fitting in so much accommodation – including four travel seats and three sleeping berths - into such a manoeuvrable package. The old adage that, ‘anybody can build a practical BIG `van but it takes real ingenuity and skill to build a practical SMALL one’ seems very appropriate. This particular

MAN TGE. Altair’s USP is that it is a gasless conversion. 410W solar panels, 2 X 100 amp/hr Lithium batteries, plus a 3kW inverter should take care of all your ‘current’ needs. Truma provided the dieselfired Combi boiler and the biggie fridge-freezer runs on 12V or 230V leccy. Hob utilises induction rings and the oven is a microwave one.

Some welcome news to conclude part 1…IH Motorhomes has returned to converting the high-top Mercedes Sprinter. Launch model of the new generation is the 6.97m (22’ 10.5”) rear lounge IH 690 RD [26 & 27]. Other layouts likely to follow, though this is a real doozie! We really liked the solid Atlantis Blue coachwork and the chosen interior finishes and colourways, but if you didn’t/don’t, plenty of alternatives are available. Show price, including Merc’s Premium Pack, was £97,995.

What we bought at theshow
PEGGING IT DOWN
At the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show, in February, we bought a Thule Panorama Tent from Hill View Awnings and have been very happy with our purchase. We did, however, find that the pegs suppled with the package were heavy, bulky, and somewhat difficult to use, meaning that we needed to carry a rather heavy mallet. What we wanted were lighter to carry and easier to use pegs. Sammy Reinhold and her boyfriend Gerard were looking flustered when we approached their Peggy Peg stand and well, they might be. They had calculated the stock levels they were expecting to sell at the show and by Day 2 were fast running out of the lightweight pegs and fastening systems they had brought with them from Germany. Clearly, we were not the only ones to be attracted to the system Sammy’s parents developed some years back.
The idea of screwing, instead of hammering in, tent pegs is not new, but the Peggy Peg system is five times lighter than a comparable metal peg. This considerably reduces the weight we must carry with us. Made from nylon reinforced fibreglass, Peggy Pegs, with its recognisable blue and orange colouring, seems to be much appreciated in the van community for its simplicity and versatility. We purchased a full set of awning pegs that come handily pre-packed in a kit. Added to that, we bought a pair of Fix and Go anchor plates. These allow our awning legs to be securely fixed so that they won’t sink into the ground or lift-off and the quick release clip means that quick retraction of our awning is possible any time that the wind gets up.
Over its six days of opening, more than 120 thousand visitors flocked to the NEC in Birmingham for the 2022 edition of the Motorhome and Caravan Show, and we were among them. Cancelled last year because of you know what, this was the first time in two years that the UK’s biggest showcase of Motorcaravans had been able to operate and what a comeback the show offered!
Eleven huge halls presented club members, like us, the opportunity to physically see, and get inside, hundreds of vehicles, giving the opportunity to compare different layouts, specifications, and finishes. We were not there to buy a new van, being very happy with Voyager. Nor were we attending to review new vans; we will leave that to our colleague and fellow member of the Caravan Writers Guild; Gentleman Jack.. We were there instead to check out what was new and exciting in
22 MOTOR CARAVANNER December 2022 SHOW REVIEW
Frances and Michael Howorth joined the throngs of visitors at the Motorhome and Caravan Show at NEC Birmingham and report back on what they spent their money on
the way of gadgets and gizmos that could enhance our touring experience.
These essential accessories and services are generally to be found around the perimeter aisles and generally inhabit that space with insurance companies and those offering destination inspiration. It is by far our favourite part of the show.
FIRE FIGHTING
Having survived a fire in an enclosed space, we are, as a result, naturally cautious when it comes to the naked flame and take fire fighting apparatus quite seriously. Voyager is fitted with fire alarms, fire blankets and dry powder extinguishers at the front and back. But we worry about the extinguishers. They are heavy, bulky, prone to accidental firing and are expensive to buy in the first place. They need to be maintained annually and most need to be disposed after 5 years of standby use. Happily, we came across Sergio de Michele, whose Italian made Fire Safety Stick offers what we feel is needed in a motorcaravan. At just 215 grammes, the fire stick is the lightest and most compact fire extinguisher in the world.
Traditional extinguishers often create more damage than the fire. This one leaves no damaging mess or residue and has longer discharge times. Our 1 kilogramme traditional powder extinguisher would last just
STINK BANISHER
While we aspire to owning and using a composting toilet the likes, of which are being fitted to Rebellion campervans made by RP, the fact is we use a standard cassette type toilet whose capacity is limited to about 15 litres, or three days when we go off grid. We have never been a fan of the blue chemical products that can be disposed of in campsites and have avoided using the so-called green versions until now. We do not use paper or plastic wet wipes to finish off the sitting down process, preferring to use reusable cloth wipes which we wash every few days or so and recycle. But when we came across Solbio and found someone demonstrating how safe it was by tasting it, we stopped to take notice.
Solbio is the worlds’ only 100% natural toilet fluid. The allnatural ingredients formula contains natural soaps, citric acid, essential oils, and plant extracts. No animal products are used. Unlike the traditional chemical toilet treatments, the inert product is harmless, safe for children and pets. It does not cause skin irritation and in the unlikely event that it gets in your eyes or mouth you simply rinse thoroughly with water. Sold in packs of 40 doses it seems to be the product we have been looking for. How we get on only time and testing will tell but we were impressed enough to give it a try. Watch this space and we will let you know how we get on.
7 seconds if we set it off, this will last for at least 50 seconds. Time enough to point it at the fire and get out of the van. Our traditional extinguishers last 5 years max and must be serviced annually. This lasts 15 years and needs no servicing. Totally harmless to humans and animals, it is safe to breathe, even in confined areas and can be used on all major classes of fire even those that start in the kitchen.

NOT EXPENSIVE
Who knew one of the best and most useful of products we would buy at the show would turn out to be the cheapest. But that is the way of
it! The Car-Pet pet hair remover is exactly what we need to tackle the problem Sterling, our long MaineCoon cat, gives us when he sheds his coat. This natty little device is simplicity itself. It lifts, gathers and removes even the trickiest pet hairs. Simply brush over the surface and the job is done, it is instantly effective. Ideal for both carpets and fabric upholstery in pet carrying motorcaravans.

NOT YET BUT IT’S COMING
Motorcaravaners can, at times, struggle to get their van perfectly level. Different folk use different approaches with planks, ramps, bottle jacks, wind-ups, hydraulic jacks and scissor jacks heading up the list of equipment used. Some have looked on enviously at caravan owners who use Lock’n’Level to provide the solution, using airbags and a standard tyre pump. To date the system is not suitable for campervans and motorhomes but company owner and system inventor, Andrew Ibbotson, promises that he has a prototype in testing and that full on production of a motor caravan version could hit the shops in early 2023. Watch this space!
FREEDOM FOR STERLING
Talking of pet carrying Motor Caravans reminds us of a problem we have when we pitch up and Sterling wants to go walkabouts. What we needed was a tethering system and that’s what we found with PetPeg. It is an anchoring system with a shock absorber that is usable in a broad variety of soils to leash, and so stop from straying, dogs, cats and all kinds of pets.
With a flexible hook and adjustable height settings, tension remains as close as possible to the ground and activates a leverage effect so that the shock absorber prevents the leashed animal from harming itself. Simply screw in by hand, no additional tools are necessary, and the system is suitable for pets up to max. 45kg. We just hope Sterling does not aspire to such greatness!
THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT
NOT A LET DOWN
We fear a tyre blowout. The thought of handling three and half tonnes of campervan at speed when a tyre fails is a worrying thought. Tyre pressure monitoring systems seem the way to go and, as well as doing what it says on the tin, can save fuel and tyres in the process. TyrePal supplies aftermarket, rugged, accurate tyre pressure monitoring kits for cars, caravans, motorhomes, and off-highway vehicles. Great value for money, easy to fit, and accurate, they monitor vehicle tyre pressures and temperatures, and provide data on a clear colour dashboard mounted display. The all-new Solar Colour Monitor Pro features an internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery. It can hold its charge for days and when the battery is low it can be re-charged using the solar panel or a USB lead. The Solar Colour Monitor Pro can record up to 99psi / 6.8 Bar, and measure temperatures up to 85°C. Maximum signal range is 7m, but this can be boosted by another 7m using an optional smart signal repeater

Beth and Harry Ronchetti believe life isn’t about sitting comfortably. They believe it is about making the most of the time they have by going out of their comfort zone and challenging themselves. They enjoy planning their campervan trips but found that Google Maps was simply not built for road trips. With an 8 stop limit for continuous routes, trips can’t be split into days, nor can they be saved or shared. Even more frustratingly, there is no space for adding notes. A software professional by trade, Harry set out to change all that and created Wilder Trips a new road trip planner for campervan and motorhome holidays. His free to use computer app can organise stops, add notes and share itineraries with others. We have signed up and have put the system to test planning the routes we take for our Out and About features that appear monthly in these pages. We will

INSPIRATION
The side walls of the halls were not the only spots to grab our attention while we walked the show. The Inspirational Theatre did what its name suggested by hosting speakers, such as Simon Reeve, Toyah Wilcox, Andrew Ditton, Martin Dorey and Kat Bird. Meanwhile the Swift cookery demonstration, lead by Chef Rachel Green (pictured above), cooked up easy, van recipes that turned out to be both illuminating and tasty. All in all, a great show. See you there next time.

ANGLIA
25 vans came to Hoveton Village Hall with good weather all the time. Many went into Norwich on the good bus service whilst others walked round Wroxham looking at the boats and of course the only shop in Hoveton, Roys. The evenings were spent in card bingo, a quiz by Tony and Saturday evening Karaoke set up by Pat and Dave Hills. Amongst notable performances was Derek and Richard, singing a London medley. I never knew we had such good singers in Anglia. A good raffle was held and thanks to the stewards Tony, Carole, Rose and Ken for a great weekend.
We had 44 vans including three Council members (and 10 Anglia day visitors for the AGM). Friday being a 1pm start saw most vans in by the evening. Friday evening after the Chairmans welcome members enjoyed cheese and wine as well as grapes in large quantities. Many thanks to Derek and Carol for getting the supplies and cutting up the cheese before coming to the rally and to all who helped to set this up. Following this, we had bingo which was very profitable for some members. On Saturday, members went off downtown and on return, we had our AGM starting at 2:30pm.
After both Derek our Secretary and Carol our Treasurer were elected for 2023, they both informed the meeting that they would not stand at the 2023 AGM as Derek will have given 20 years’ service to the Anglia Committee and Carol 15 years. We now have six new members on the committee, and we welcome them. The three officers remain the same. Thanks to the retiring members Brian and Jenny Wood, David Seals and Bob Johns for their past help. Thanks to the ladies who put out the tea and cakes for the AGM break.
On Saturday evening, the hall and tables were decorated for Halloween. There was a prize for best table won by the Essex table and best individual won by Ben Allen. We were
then entertained by Corey Lewis who had us up and dancing the night away. A very good artist. On Sunday morning, tea, coffee, Chairmans chat, dodgy dip and an enormous raffle finished off a very good weekend.
Upcoming rallies: 2-4 December: Christmas party at Wells, NR23 1RB. 30 December-2 January 2023: Terrington Village Hall, PE34 4LZ. Both rallies are fully booked but check with Carol for any cancellations.
Anglia Officers 2023: Chairman: Keith Poole, Secretary: Derek Clarke, Treasurer: Carol Biggs and Rally Officer: Teresa Poole. Anglia committee members 2023: Rex and Betty Cox, Tony and Carole Park, Carol and Ben Allen and Malvern and Janet Heaps.
At the committee meeting following the AGM, there was discussion on a subject brought up at the members meeting. As a result, the committee decided that the 2023 AGM will be held on the Saturday morning as a trial.
CHILTERN
The Chiltern Committee welcomed 23 vans (17 Chiltern and six visitors) to their AGM rally at St Peter’s School, Old Windsor. Friday evening saw us all in the school gym for the return of Mick’s Card Bingo with two Members winning over £20 each. This was followed by another game from our Rally Officer, Sharon. On Saturday morning, it was AGM time where five Committee Members did not stand for re-election, including the Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer. Following a discussion regarding the Group’ finances, the following Members were elected: Chairman - Carole Ward. Secretary - Pete Ingham. Treasurer - Roy Ward. Rally Officer - Sharon Heritage. Committee Members - Shirley Ingham, Paul Walker and David Moth.
After the meeting closed most ralliers took the opportunity to visit nearby Windsor, travelling either by bus or walking to the town via The Long Walk (as some pointed out, it is indeed a very long walk!) Much use was also made of the nearby pub for food and drink.
Saturday evening saw us back in the gym to be

At our AGM rally at Wellingore, we thanked Champa Payne and Joyce and Les for their work over the years as they stepped down from the Committee. Having been successfully elected, we welcomed Dave Brant, Yvonne Burridge, Ian Gunning, Debs Kennedy and Bob Smart on to the Committee.
There have been some changes to the roles held by Committee members: Chairman - Brian Burridge, Treasurer - Anne Taylor, Rally Officer & Vice Chairman - Paul Arndt, Health & Safety Officer - Bob Smart, Entertainments Officer - Ian Gunning, Vice Treasurer - Yvonne Burridge. The other roles remain the same: Secretary - Sue Pilkiw, Meet & GreetBernadette Dickman.
34 vans attended the 59th AGM rally held at Wellingore Memorial Hall, one of which was a first-time visitor. The members were welcomed by the committee on a rainy afternoon. Teas and coffees were available in the hall which gave us time to chat with friends. The rally was officially opened by the Chairperson Anne on Friday evening. Raffle tickets and bonus ball on sale. Bingo was played and Anne provided a table quiz and a silly quiz. Then the highlight of the night was the Grand Conker Competition which was run by Dave and Champa. This caused great entertainment and the final was between Robin and Dave. There was a steward’s enquiry, but Dave was declared the winner. This will probably be under discussion until the next conker competition.
Saturday morning, the AGM took place then members went to the local pub for refreshments and a meal or visited the local area. Saturday evening the committee provided a pie and pea supper and some delicious cakes to follow. The evening was concluded with entertainment by a singer, Kenny J.
On Sunday, we had a coffee morning when the raffle and bonus ball were drawn. Our new Chairperson, Brian, closed the rally after thanking members for their support and thanking the committee for stewarding the rally. Yvonne.
21 vans attended the rally at Beckingham Village Hall. They arrived in very wet weather but were welcomed by the stewards Brian, Paul, Jane and Yvonne. It had been arranged for fish and chips to be delivered and some members took the advantage of this, so they didn’t have to cook tea. Very nice they were too! The rally was opened by the Chairperson, then Paul and Jane sold bingo and raffle tickets. Bingo played then members played a game of Scattergories. This game always gets the members in a competitive mood. The evening was finished by playing the dice game.
On Saturday, there was a coffee morning, then members went for a walk or caught a bus into Gainsborough to do some shopping. Other members walked to the nearby garden centre for their lunch. Saturday evening, Brian had prepared a table quiz which got the members thinking, (it
was so quiet in the hall) and then it was time for the karaoke. Finished the evening with dancing.
After the coffee morning on Sunday, Paul and Jane drew the raffle and then the rally was closed. Yvonne

EAST WESSEX
Hello everyone and a very Merry Christmas from all the Committee.
Weeke Primary School in Winchester proved to be a popular venue, being fully booked with 23 vans attending. East Wessex members plus visitors from Chiltern (one), Sussex (five) and West Country (one) were greeted by hosts Julia and Tony. Some arrived in heavy rain and strong winds while others got caught up in traffic jams on the M3 caused by accidents and breakdowns. We were, however, delighted that Kate Jones, MCC Chairman managed to battle her way through, staying with us for the weekend.
On Friday evening we danced or listened to Pete’s music and chatted in the hall. Unexpectedly we found the school’s heating turned off, but the caretaker came to the rescue with mobile heaters which kept us warm.
On Saturday the weather improved dramatically after overnight thunder and lightning, and some caught the bus to the town centre. Our hosts had managed to negotiate discounts from the nearby café and Chinese takeaway and several of us took full advantage of them. Very good they were too, so well-done Julia and Tony.
After coffee and card bingo in the afternoon, we began to get ready for our French themed evening. Our singer supplied the bunting, French flags, and tablecloths to decorate the hall, whilst the committee prepared the baguettes, French cheeses, and wines. Jim had made some huge wooden platters to display Sandra’s cheeses.
The evening saw an outbreak of stripey tops, scarves and berets, one visitor also wearing a string of onions round his neck. Our singer, Muriele, was very French and sang songs from the 30s and 40s, getting us to join in with some whilst we danced to others. We soon polished off the buffet and then Allen did the raffle. It was quite a different evening to what we normally do but I hope all enjoyed it; thanks to all who helped make it a success.
The AGM on Sunday was a rollercoaster. Just three nominations meant no committee could be formed with
entertained by the fabulous Simon Rose who had most of us up on the dance floor. After the Chairman’s Chat on Sunday morning, we all departed after a very enjoyable weekend.

the prospect of an EGM as a last ditch attempt to stop the group folding. Just when that seemed inevitable, Brenda Scott stepped forward and volunteered to stand, so making four of us and saving the group. A really big thank you to Brenda, now the new rally officer; husband Allen is our new Chairman, with myself and Sandra continuing as before. We do still need help with supporting roles e.g refreshments, entertainment, hosting, organising a raffle, carrying the pods etc. You don’t need to be on the committee to help out. Diane.

It’s been a complete year and our AGM was at Chelmer Valley High School. Unfortunately, there were a few changes to the venue, one we lost a complete area for parking, so therefore a reduction in number of units attending, they all arrived practically together which was good, so we were not hanging around in the cold and dark.
Friday night was the usual bingo and get together, The AGM was moved to Saturday morning this seemed to go very smoothly with a number of changes on the Committee line-up. I would like to thank those retiring officers for their commitment for the period and welcome the new Committee. Welcome Allan, Sue, and Christine.
We were also presented with our 60th plaque by Coms member Keith Poole, also he is Chairman of Anglia Group. He and Teresa celebrated their Wedding Anniversary with us this weekend, which left the afternoon for members to their own devices, many going into Chelmsford for shopping.
Saturday evening, we had a buffet followed by our entertainment of Tricks of the Trade, these were very versatile and had us up dancing, even having three members up on stage joining in with the group namely Maureen, Jane and Elaine, the lads certainly had their work cut out with these three ladies. On Sunday morning, the raffle was called and the usual Chairmans chat.
Wishing all the members of the MCC a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
Upcoming rallies: 25-27 November: Mayflower School, CM12 0RT, start time 5PM in the main hall with entertainment. 16-18 December: Chelmer Valley, CM1 7ER, start time 6pm, bookable Christmas Party.
KENT
14-16 October AGM Rally at Oasis Academy, Sheerness:
The weather was excellent for this time of year, one quick shower but otherwise sunny and warm. Some members walked along the seashore whilst others frequented the local pub that served great food. Friday night was catch up time and on Saturday morning we had our AGM. Our chairman thanked the retiring committee for all their hard work in providing a full programme of weekend rallies, holiday rallies and of course the Platinum Jubilee Party. Thanks to those members who attended the AGM and made their thoughts known, it was great to see a number of day visitors and we welcome in our new committee who have volunteered to hold the fort for 2023.
Your full Rally Programme for 2023 has been booked and hopefully be with you as you read this article. Please do take time to view the programme and book the dates in your diaries. The committee are hoping to provide a varied programme of rallies including ones with professional entertainment, quiet ones to just soak up the beautiful Kent countryside, we may even try to do some group rambles as well as weekends that are just pure fun and silliness! Full information on what to expect at each rally will be communicated via the Kent Group of the Motor Caravanners’ Club Facebook Page – so watch that page!
Each weekend rally does need hosts to “own the weekend.” The minimum you need to do is welcome people as they arrive and make sure they are pitched up in a safe manner and slot in a coffee/tea meet up at some point during the weekend. The rest is up to you! It can be a quiet weekend or one filled with silliness or perhaps you like to take us on a ramble, preferably to the local pub but the extra fun is all up to you. Please do speak with the committee if you need any advice or help and don’t be put off if you can’t be there to pitch people up, we can find someone to do that.
The last couple of years have been difficult times for us Motor Caravanners but let’s look forward to 2023 with hope and anticipation for a great year of fun and friendship. So, please do come along to the rallies where you can meet up with old friends and make new friends. If you are new to rallying, then please do be encouraged that we are a friendly bunch and would love to meet with you.
Our Christmas Party Rally 9-11 December at Greatstone and our New Year Rally 30 December to 2 January 2023 at Bexhill are both fully booked but please do contact our Group Secretary if you’d like to be added to our reserve list.
Our first rally for 2023 will be 17-19 February 2023 at Sandwich Junior School, St. Barts Road, CT13 0AS with an Elvis impersonator for the Saturday night, so dust off your Teddy Boy outfits and your full petticoated skirts and come rocking with us!
LANCASHIRE
The rally held at Warren Farm in October was not only our AGM but also our Diamond Jubilee Celebration. There were 31 Lancashire ‘vans plus two from Northwest Midlands and
GROUP NEWS 36 MOTOR CARAVANNER December 2022
NW plus one Lancashire visitor.
On Friday it was good to welcome back some of our very new members. Valerie made us a ‘Feeling’ game where small objects are enclosed in cloth bags and although there was some chaos, we did get the game finished. We then continued with Kens quiz which was won by Bobby’s team who were kind enough to share the chocolates they won. Dean played music, a few did line dancing and finished with Working Man.
Saturday was our AGM which was, by the end of the Rally completed successfully with help from Marie Moran, a former Group Secretary. In the main, problems were caused by big changes on the Committee, halfway through the year, meaning that the majority were inexperienced in their roles and the Secretary also suffered serious illness. Our committee is now full and also has a little more experience.
The evening started with Les Kendrick presenting our Chairperson, Lisa with a plaque in recognition of our 60 year Anniversary. We continued with a superb buffet and punch. The artist was Jack Daniels who entertained us with songs and jokes. In the interval Allan and Brian presented Take Your Pick. Everyone enjoyed the evening. At the coffee morning, Lisa thanked everyone who helped to make the weekend such a success and wished all a safe onward journey.
The second rally of October was at Whittingham and Goosnargh. Chairperson, Lisa welcomed 30 vans, including one from Yorkshire and one from NWM&NW and also including new members Janet and Cliff Newby. We had bingo and a quiz which ended with three joint winners and who were given a large container of chocolates to share. Dean played music and we watched the line dancing. Saturday dawned with more rain. We met in the hall at
10:30am to be introduced to Tai Chi warm up exercises by Steve and Janet. Some then went into a committee meeting whilst others joined the Crafty Crew to be shown how to make a Halloween wreath by Val. The afternoon continued with Kurling organised by David and Brian. The evening brought our Halloween Parade with many folk dressed and made-up so well it was hard to recognise them! The eventual winners, chosen by the bar staff, were Rob (again) and Angie. It was followed by a topical quiz which had our team doing a lot of head scratching! The evening continued with Line dancing, two partner dances and ended with Best of Friends. Coffee morning on Sunday was where Lisa thanked the hosts, Allan, Barbara, Jack and Marie and everyone who helped including our music man, Dean. She wished all a safe journey home. Group scribe, Alma.
Upcoming rallies: 9-11 December: 2 nights, Lancashire, Canberra Club BAE, BB2 7LF. Christmas Dinner. Bar drinks. Bookable. 29 December-2 January 2023: 4 nights, Lancashire, Turnover Farm, St. Michael’s on Wyre. Own drinks, PR3 0UE. New Year. Bookable.
MOTORCYCLE
We have had 12 motorbike rallies this year. We went to Norfolk, Suffolk, Staffordshire, Cheshire, Kent, Sussex, Somerset, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. We met up with old friends and made many new friends too.
We had group ride-outs to seasides, motorbike shows and meets, The National Arboretum, a tank museum, Stonehenge, Lakenheath and Mildenhall, assorted motorbike showrooms, over the Clifton Bridge at Bristol, through the Cheddar gorge and rode with 300 other bikes on a Charity Ride Out for Air Ambulance Service. Some members bought new bikes and trailers. We gathered in the evenings to chat, have quizzes and share experiences. We had a lot of fun and laughed a lot. Some of our members words from our Rally WhatsApp messages remind us why we love this group. ‘Thank you for a great rally and making us feel welcome. Such a good group of people. Looking forward to meeting you again’. ‘Thanks everyone for making the National a memorable rally. We really enjoyed meeting everyone and look forward to the next one’. ‘We are so lucky to belong to this amazing group of people’. ‘Thanks for a great rally with great ride outs and evening get togethers. This is a really fun group!’ ‘Looking forward to doing it all again next year!’
NENE VALLEY
Nene Valley Group would like to wish all members a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.
We had pleasure in welcoming visitors from Anglia, Chiltern, East Wessex and South and West Wales to our AGM Rally. Fortunately, the problems regarding Hall bookings were overcome and, together with Nene Valley members, we were ready for the AGM. Thanks go to the Committee for deciding to stay in office, and they were voted back in en-bloc. Just one new Committee

was elected, Geraldine, and we look forward to her input. Posts held by Committee members remain the same, which is excellent for stability and continuity. At the following Members’ Meet, temporary Rally lists for 2023 were handed out, and it is obvious that our Rally Officer Denis has been busy putting together a variety of venues that he has found, together with those that have been suggested by members, something to look forward to, and work now progresses to sort and print the new Rally programmes for distribution to Nene Valley members.
After business had finished, Pat and Jane, with help from Anita, Jill and Mary Ellen, set out a superb Buffet lunch, everybody being really impressed with what they had achieved. A big thank you ladies from all present. The evening was rounded off with Bingo and one of the fiendishly difficult quizzes that Denis specialises in, down at the old Hall. An enjoyably busy day to end the Rally. Tony
Upcoming rallies: 27-29 January: Wrenn Academy, Doddington Road, Wellingborough, NN8 2JJ. 17-19 February: Cogenhoe Bowls Club, York Avenue, Cogenhoe, NN7 1NB.
NORTHERN COUNTIES
Hello everyone, November has appeared on the calendar this morning - A sign we are now going into Winter.
We have just two rallies to report for October, first is the Tractor Rally at Brunton Northumberland, John Ternent hosted this, thank you John and everyone who volunteered for the offer of a free weekend working on the gate taking fees and parking for an hour or so each day, well done to all. Unfortunately, it was the usual Brunton weather for this event, wet, windy, and muddy conditions which if you came prepared with your wellies was not a problem, however the vast range of exhibits throughout to show was excellent.
The final rally was our AGM combined Halloween weekend at the Guisborough Pursglove College, the AGM was on Saturday morning when the agenda was worked through and the Chairman thanked the outgoing committee and the members who are always there assisting as required, the members attending elected the new committee headed by Chairman - Dave Hird, Treasurer - Carol Brown, Rally Officer - Sue Lang. SecretaryTony Edwards and Vice Chairman - Paula Edwards, Neil Huggon continues as our Webmaster and John
Ternent is our Safety Officer.
The celebrations for Halloween commenced on Friday evening when members were welcomed by the Chairman Dave Hird and the hosts for the entertainment were Mark and Sue Lang, Thank you all. Prior to the evening buffet, there was a Halloween Parade of our members in their magnificent Halloween Costumes, following the judging by our Vice President John Cottrell, declaring the winners as Tracy Thompson and George Jobson. Well done to all who took part. The plentiful buffet was enjoyed by all, thank you to all that helped also thank you to John Ternent for organizing the tea and coffee throughout the weekend. Sunday concluded the rally with the raffle being drawn and thank you to everyone who donated prizes. Finally, was the results of Mark and Sue’s Halloween Anagram quiz won by Paula and Tony Edwards.
Upcoming rallies: 9-11 December: Guisborough Prior Pursglove College Christmas Lunch 1pm and Faith Supper in the evening. Note Christmas Lunch was bookable, and unfortunately by the time you read this, bookings will be closed. Members are however still welcome to attend the weekend rally, just not the lunch. 29 December-2 January 2023: New Year Rally at Redcar Racecourse. Redcar is Limited to 50 vans Bookable online.
Well, that is all from us this year. Merry Christmas to everyone!
NORTHERN IRELAND
Portadown rally: An amazing 72 vans were checked and parked-up by hosts Andy Clarke and Sam Arlow with a little help from Lesley Rixon, Robbie and Irene Hewitt. It started out dry but soon, rain had umbrellas covering the helpers but most importantly the sign-in sheets.
The welcome sheet stated that fees would be taken in the clubhouse, once parked up, but due to the clubhouse not being available until after 5pm, meant that Paul Rixon, our new Treasurer, began taking the fees from his van. Word spread and soon he had, for his initiation on the Zettle, a long queue. He coped admirably. Word also spread that the new chef Ryan, in the newly named restaurant Flat Dogs, was serving well-presented and appetising meals. Many booked for restaurant on the Saturday night and despite the number of people all were served and no complaints were heard. Well done to all the staff.
GROUP NEWS 38 MOTOR CARAVANNER December 2022
Motorcycle group - September Camper UK rally
Ye ha and the sun shone on Saturday. A few cycled the Newry path. Some got their usual fry ups and chatted with friends until they were ready to wander up the town. With the sun continuing to shine there were a great many people browsing the stalls. Pockets were emptied as children threw balls at skittles and tried to get bobbing ducks on their sticks in the hope of winning prizes. A few Stetsons were also seen, please check out the gallery. The main show stage resounded with good auld country music and along with the foot tapping a few showed off their line dancing skills. On Saturday evening, friends gathered in the club house to chat and relax. All in all, the mood was good.
Sunday morning get together: Quiz (Sudoku puzzle) was won by Eleanor McFadden. Number plate draws were won by Olivia Everett, Paul Rixon and Alex Mellon. Thanks to Hosts and all who came along to support them. Hope to see you all at next rally in Newtownards. Irene Hewitt.
Regent House School, Newtownards rally: 14-16 October 2022: Friday was a bright and sunny day in Newtownards, and we were greeted by our hosts Liz, Thelma and Mary who warmly welcomed us whilst checking us in. Ian and Stephen expertly parked all 39 vans. This kept the hosts busy for the next few hours and left them little time to admire Scrabo tower smiling benignly down on us all. The Treasurer, Paul Rixon, set up shop from 5:30pm to take payment for the weekend and he was also kept busy.
Later that evening, the hosts had invited us all over to play a few games of tabletop bingo and to catch up with friends. The bingo went down a treat (ok, I won the first pot so maybe I was biased), with Liz and Ian taking it in turns to call the cards, though some ribbing took place when an expert farmer such as Ian had difficulty a few times identifying what a spade was, maybe too much time spent on the tractor perhaps.
Heavy rain overnight thankfully cleared for us on Saturday morning, though there was a definite chill in the air, and it was overcast, but dry. Keen members took up the offer of the gentle yoga session offered by Jane Murdock, unfortunately I forgot my yoga mat so had to forego the experience, maybe next time. The Saturday market and retail therapy opportunities of Ards attracted quite a few members to venture into town. From the bulging bags being carried back it was clear the local retailers must have done well from our members.
Saturday night entertainment was live music provided by Steve Farlow and Geri Kane and from line dancing to waltzing, the floor was kept full. The usual raffle took place with quite a few prizes to give out. Everyone there seemed to really enjoy the night.
The Sunday coffee morning saw Selma start things off thanking our hosts Liz, Ian, Thelma, Mary, and Stephen for a great weekend. She wished Ruth and Norman congratulations on their 31st wedding anniversary and thanked Jane for taking the gentle yoga session on Saturday morning. The Treasurer had advised her that the raffle on Saturday night had raised £195. She reminded us that this money goes to cover the cost of the live music therefore as long as we keep buying the raffle tickets then live music
would continue. She advised that Pat Connell had agreed to take photographs for the website gallery in the absence of Roy and reported that an extra 2 nights had been added to the Halloween rally in Foyle College, now from 28 October-1 November, though the hall and toilets would only be available until Sunday morning. Toilet emptying facilities would be available for the duration of the rally, she also gave a brief outline of a few of the activities that the hosts had planned for the rally including best dressed man, best dressed woman, and best dressed table. She announced that the Dinner Dance would be held on the 14 January 2023 in La Mon House. Two nights free parking was available to those attending the dinner dance, with live music on both nights. Selma then handed the mike over to Ian, who began by thanking Liz and their co-hosts Thelma, Mary and Stephen and all who had helped them over the weekend in particular Selma. He then proceeded with the number plate draw with the two lucky winners being Billy Little and Selma McMullan. The quiz draw saw Davy Morrison being the lucky winner. Martin and Winnie Murphy. See photos in Gallery by Pat Connell.
Halloween Rally Report: On Friday 28th October, we were warmly welcomed to Foyle College Derry/Londonderry by Dessie and Mervyn (the terrible twins) and Ruth and Maud Ross. 55 motorhomes attended, eager to enjoy all the entertainment our hosts had organised for us, and the spectacular Halloween festival the city is famous for.
Friday night saw some amazing transformations as nine brave men were transformed into all manner of beauty queens vying to win the coveted Miss Halloween crown. It was a very close contest and a sight never to be forgotten! Regina Bush (aka Harry Campbell) was crowned Queen. Saturday morning, club member Alex Mellon, showcased her Tropic range. £80 from the profits from sales were kindly donated to the chairman’s charity (Diabetes UK NI) along with two beautiful gifts for the raffle which were won by Geralyn and Maud Ross.
Saturday night saw more spectacular outfits and beautifully decorated tables which set the scene for a great night of dancing. Sunday coffee morning the chairman brought us up to date with the club news, Mervyn and Maud Ross we’re celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and kindly shared the beautiful cake Ruth had made for them. We welcomed new members Paul and Amelia Tohill. The quiz was won by William McClenaghan and the number plate winners were Robert McCrory and Tom Lowry. Thanks again to the hosts for a great extended weekend. Hope to see you all soon at our next rally in Limavady. Arlene Campbell
NWM & NW
Our AGM took place at Whitley Village Hall 14-16 October. The weekend was quite well attended with 19 vans (including visitors from Lancashire and Severn Valley) and some in cars for the meeting. We had our usual bingo on Friday evening when Geoff Balshaw won most of the money. Gail managed to win a small amount after a false

Saturday was the official business. Many thanks to Jacci Durkee for overseeing the signing-in on the door, to Les Kendrick for acting as teller during the voting and to Sue Johnston assisted by Paula Wilks who took the minutes. All went well in the main meeting followed by a lively discussion in the members meeting. Linda Hastilow has officially taken on the post of Chairperson. Geoff Balshaw is Vice Chair. Mike Hastilow has stepped down as rally officer after five plus years. He’s remaining on committee. Committee welcomed Jon and Elaine Beck as our new rally officers. We wish them well for the future. All other posts remain unchanged.
In the evening, the vegetable stew followed by gateaux went down well. A big thank you to the team in the kitchen and to everyone who came and supported the rally.
The rally on Chester Racecourse had a very wet and soggy start, but fortunately, we were able to use an area of hard standing. Jon and Elaine did a wonderful job of booking in and parking the vans in quite difficult circumstances. There were vast puddles resembling the Great Lakes especially in the region of John Rice’s van (an extra amenity at no extra charge). Friday evening, we were able to use a bar in the White Horse pub on the racecourse. Thank you, Elaine, for arranging that.
Saturday had a very wet start, but many still walked up into town to shop, eat or enjoy the historic town and its many attractions. 28 units attended with visitors from Lancashire, Yorkshire, South and West Wales, East Midlands and Severn Valley. We, also, had new members Neil and Sandra Delargy and Paul and Sue Coveney. A bring your own coffee morning took place on Sunday, outside in the dry, when everyone sang to John for his 74th birthday. Thank you to All who came and made it an enjoyable rally with thanks, also, to the racecourse for their help and support.
Advance notice: The new rally has a pyjama theme with the addition of bring a teddy bear.
Hosts or volunteers to book in are still needed for 2023 rallies, so please speak to a committee member if you think you can help. The new rally book is on its way. Contact details for the rally officers: email nwmnwrally@hotmail.com or mobile 07525 851394.

S&W WALES
Hello, as I write this report the nights are closing in but, so far, it’s not yet ‘winter cold’. The windy and changeable weather is making a lot of work for me in the garden, sweeping up leaves, but I’m not complaining as I’m able to come in to a welcoming log fire.
7-10 October: Hi Tide, Porthcawl: It was our first rally at this site. It was bookable and very popular with the maximum 48 vans expertly parked up by our hosts Betty and Glyn with Muriel and Dave. Unfortunately, the arrivals coincided with very heavy rain resulting in our brave hosts being “wet to their pants and knickers”. This was made worse with the high winds and blowing sand of what was the tail end of a hurricane, resulting in many saying they were rocked to sleep that first night. A warm welcome was extended to the six Severn Valley, one NW&WM and three West Country visitors.
Saturday was a beautiful day, enabling most to visit the adjoining market or take the level stroll into Porthcawl. It was Celtic Weekend at Porthcawl and Scottish pipers and dancers, Irish dancers and Welsh dancers were performing in the streets all day. The atmosphere was amazing and many enjoyed a drink in the sunshine or a meal in the town. The weather allowed many to sit out in the evening. It was cooler and breezier for the coffee morning on Sunday. Our Chair, Betty, thanked our visitors for their support and Keith, the Rally Officer, updated everyone: The live entertainment during the New Year Rally at Kidwelly will be on New Year’s Eve with use of the comfortable centre during the day. The Easter Rally 2023 will be at the Hi Tide. There was our usual raffle for the Wales Air Ambulance before leaving for home.
3-6 November: Ysgol Gymraeg, Heol Pantygwindy, Caerphily: This was our AGM rally and our hosts were the committee, with Glyn doing the parking of 32 vans. This Welsh language primary school is very welcoming with the hall just right for socialising and an easy stroll to the shops.
On the Friday evening, supper was provided for everyone with a wide choice and huge quantities which was enjoyed by all. The entertainment was a cabaret singer, Kayleigh Equeall: She performed a Whitney Houston tribute for the first half of the evening and then a wide range of songs which encouraged dancing. She was excellent and was especially kind and interacting with the young people present; They had an especially good evening.
The AGM on Saturday saw our Chair, Betty Bishop, re-elected as were Sue Howard (Vice Chair), Glyn Evans (Treasurer), Pauline Greaves (Secretary) and Keith Howard (Rally Officer). Thanks to the retiring members Pam and Gerald Wehden. All other committee members continue to serve with the addition of Phillipa Lewis. The Chair extended her thanks to Jenny Pumfleet for her work in verifying the accounts and to Elizabeth Davies, as our Scribe and her assistant Muriel Butt. Our Chair also thanked her committee for all their hard work and support during the year and gave her appreciation to the members present for their attendance and participation in the matters discussed.
On the Saturday evening, we met up in the hall for Bingo, a Halloween Quiz (thanks to Keith) and the raffles. As the hall was not available on Sunday, we had our usual raffle and the Quilt Raffle’. Tickets had been sold during the year for a quilted Christmas banner which had been made by Meidwen Owen and raffled for the Wales Air Ambulance. It was won by Colin and Liz Davies who were delighted. Thanks to Muriel and Sandra for organising the raffle.

SCOTTISH
Hello fellow members. I hope you are all well and looking forward to the festive season. By the time you read this we should have a new committee and our AGM behind us. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking outgoing committee members and wish the new one a Happy year ahead.
This will be my last newsletter as I intend doing less next year and passing on this role to another member. The meet held at Foresterseat from 20-24 October was attended by nine Scottish vans. A sincere thanks goes out to Clem Isbister for stepping up to help and booking in those who arrived. None of the committee were able to attend due to health reasons. I telephoned Clem and he stepped up as I was still in recovery from Covid. Aileen and I went down to Forfar for two nights and dealt with fees and settlement with the site. The site owner was in hospital and things were left with a caretaker meantime. We had two new Scottish members Susanne and John McIntosh and Irene
McChlery and John Bell nice to meet you all and haste ye back. We managed a get together for a chat and coffee on the Saturday morning. The weather was good to us. Ten of us had Sunday lunch at Sinclairs and also some had carry outs. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Its bye for now. Take care and it was nice talking to you.

The Selected European Rally groups AGM was held at Moreton-In-Marsh in the Cotswolds, the rally began on Sunday 16 October and ended on the 19 October. A total of 13 motor homes attended this excellent venue, which is based on a cricket clubs’ ground, and has a large heated clubhouse.
The first night was taken up with meeting old friends, quizzes, bingo, and a plentiful supply of red, white, and rosé wine, supplied by the club. The AGM was held at 3pm on Monday 17. The committee members all stood down, and all were voted back on the committee for another year. Much discussion was held about a FICM rally next year which is to be held in Italy and is something to look forward to. In the evening we all gathered for a ploughman’s meal, which was excellent. Tuesday was market day in Moreton, and in the evening another quiz and a raffle was held with almost everyone winning a prize. It was a good rally enjoyed by all. Woodies Dad
SEVERN VALLEY
Hello everyone. Just one rally to report on this month: Our 60th AGM made a welcome return to Alveley Sports and Social Club. The site which hosted the clubs 60th Birthday Bash in the summer. The committee hosted this rally.
A total of 28 vans attended this rally 25 from Severn Valley, one from Avon, one from NW Midlands and one from Lancashire. This was a disappointing turnout for a club with over 350 members.
Some members did attend the AGM on the Saturday morning, choosing to arrive by car. Thank you everyone who attended, also some members did send apologies. These can be found in the minutes of the meeting, which is available to be viewed on the Severn Valley website.
Friday night members were entertained with a game of skittles (killer), with prizes awarded for first, second and third. There was going to be two games played but most of the night was taken up by the first round.
Saturday morning the AGM was held in the clubhouse. During the meeting, a minutes silence was held to remember members no longer with us, and to remember our recently departed Queen.
Our new committee is: Chairman Dave Blissett, Treasurer Bobbi Moloney, secretary Amanda Windmill, Vice Chair Mike Moloney, Rally Officer Chris Windmill, Equipment Officer Tony Barnsley and Committee Helper Janet Emeney. Thank you everyone.
Saturday night was Halloween fancy dress with members

also decorating tables to win prizes. The entertainment for the evening was a local singer Hayley Louise Johns, who was also our judge for the night. She picked out the fancy dress winners and best decorated table. Due to the weather conditions, the raffle took place on the Saturday night also, as there was no Sunday coffee morning, hope you all had a safe journey home.
Upcoming rallies: Unfortunately, our Christmas dinner party at Much Marcle is cancelled this year, due to not enough members wishing to attend, and the venue needing 40 vans to cover the costs. On a happier note, the New Year Rally at Ledbury Rugby Club (29 December-2 January 2023) is attracting plenty of bookings. These can be made through the rally officer Chris Windmill (minimum 2 nights) this is the final meeting for this year. Hope to see you soon and best wishes for 2023.
SWPG
Season’s greetings! This year’s AGM rally was held at Trevarrian Holiday Park, 13-17 October. The AGM took place on Friday evening with the committee agreeing to stand again. Mel Maddocks and Shirley Lulham were also nominated and voted on. There were no business matters.
At the Members’ Meeting it was agreed to dispose of pre- bookings. Exceptions will be made if there is a meal, or a site restricts the number of pitches, or an ANPR system is in operation. The money-in-envelope system remains in place - this is helpful to hosts, allowing them to pitch ralliers safely. Everyone had their say and favourable conclusions were reached. Next year’s preliminary rally programme was handed around and hosts’ names were put against all but two venues – this must be a record and worthy thanks go to all who put their names forward. Information on the Christmas Party time rally at Cofton was handed out. The Members’ meeting was ended with Ray announcing and refunding one night’s rally fee to those attending the AGM who stayed on site. Next year’s AGM rally is 10-17 November at the new venue of Wooda Farm Holiday Park, Bude; a date for your 2023 diary.
The rally itself… We welcomed a total of 19 vans (18 SWP and one West Country), including first-timers Pauline and Nigel and it was good to see June and Larry Lockett back out rallying again. The weather at Trevarrian during each of the three-days was full of sun, although there was a brisk wind. Fortunately, the rain (wouldn’t be Cornwall without it!) visited during the dark hours of night. Those arriving on Thursday took part in the Bowling and meal deal for £9.50 each. Barbara mixed the names, which was a great ice-breaker and Graham Morris was the over-all winner. During the days, ralliers did some walking, took bus trips as well as taking advantage of the indoor heated swimming pool. One or two enjoyed a meal at the local pub too.
Saturday evening we were entertained in the clubhouse bar by the ever-popular Arthur. Local residents are always welcome at this clubhouse and, along with the site owners, bought our raffle tickets - it was good that one ticket drawn out was won by a local during the evening.
Sunday morning we had a coffee meet in the bowling alley and several put their names down for the Christmas party rally. Most ralliers then set off home, some after enjoying their Sunday roast at the pub, or taking a lastminute walk. Thanks to Linda and Mel for the photos on Facebook. It was a great atmosphere enjoyed by everyone.
Upcoming rallies: 29 December-2 January 2023: Trevarrian Holiday Park, TR8 4AQ, £16 pupn with EHU, New Year’s Rally. 27-29 January 2023: Fox & Hounds, EX20 4HF. £15 pupn no EHU, £20 pupn with EHU. Burns Night Supper and Skittles Competition.
SUSSEX
Season’s Greetings to one and all. Here’s hoping that everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Our AGM rally at Willingdon Community School, Eastbourne, was well attended, by 26 vans, as well as several day visitors for the meeting. We had 22 vans from Sussex, including a new member, George Hodge, three from Essex and one from Kent. Thank you for your support.
A big welcome to our new treasurer, Mary Campbell, I’m sure that we all wish her well. Thanks to Michael and Linda Reading, who stood down as treasurer and Vice Chairperson, your efforts were greatly appreciated. Enjoy your future rallies following retirement from the committee. Sadly, Gordon and Carole Bennett announced their intention to step down at next year’s AGM as Chairman and Secretary, after many years of service. Heartfelt thanks for all your hard work, let’s hope you have a great year. Anyone considering to take up these posts will be given every assistance and advice. Please let the committee know if you need information. Remember, the club will only continue as successfully will YOUR support. On a lighter note, during the Members meeting, it was agreed to trial a Loyalty Scheme, to encourage and reward members to continue supporting our rallies. The scheme is open to all, not just Sussex members, with a £10 voucher after six rallies attended and will run for an initial period of two years. Full details will be available on our website or from the committee. The scheme is now up and running and we look forward to welcoming new and old attendees.
Entertainment on Saturday evening was with Lee Mack, a superb singer, guitarist and violinist. Many people dressed up for the occasion, with some especially ghoulish outfits, particularly from our Essex friends. Well done everyone for the decorations and fancy dress.
Please note that our next rally is at Willingdon Community School, BN20 9QX, 16-18th December, not Rodborough as advertised in the annual magazine, due to changes in their playground arrangements. Our Rally Officer, Marilyn Harris, was able to rearrange the venue at short notice so our Christmas festivities will still take place. Arrival time is from 5.30pm, please do not arrive before then. The fun and games will begin with quizzes and Mandy Beeke doing her music and games. Saturday will see a bring and buy sale during the afternoon, followed by mulled wine and mince pies in the evening, with dancing with DJ Tom, a firm Sussex

favourite. Please text Marilyn if you are thinking of attending so she can confirm numbers.
A quick reminder that our Day Meet will be at Dialpost, more details in next month’s magazine.
Once again, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, looking forward to seeing you at a rally soon, Jo.
WEST COUNTRY
Kings Down Tail 12-16 October: We had 19 vans join us at our latest rally. We arrived with sunshine, but we were soon joined by our beloved British weather rain, but most of the wet weather joined us in the evenings and overnight, but it was rather cold especially in the evenings. Thank to Tim and Sam who brought with them their event shelter which was put up so we could all meet up under cover.
On our first night, we had a meet and greet where our hosts introduced themselves and we all had some laughs along the way. On the other nights we had bingo and play your cards right and then background music to catch up with each other. On the Saturday night we had our raffle. Despite the weather we still had a good few days away and lots of us also got to enjoy a lovely full English breakfast a couple of mornings.
Upcoming rallies: 1-5 December: Christmas Rally at Riverside Caravan Park. 29 December-2 January 2023: New Years Rally, Whitestone School, Shepton Mallet.
WEST WESSEX
35 motorhomes arrived at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy for our AGM and rally. We welcomed five from Avon, one from West Country, three from Essex, one from Sussex and one from East Sussex with 24 West Wessex vans attending. The weather was fine, so we were able to walk through the centre of town searching for the answers to Dawn’s treasure hunt, walk around the lake or take the bus to explore further afield. On the evening of Tuesday 25, there was a ‘Meet and Greet’ in the school hall. The Bingo and fun and games on Thursday included Ali miming the actions of different sports which we needed to guess! On Friday evening, we had a Halloween party with many members in fancy dress dancing to music from a very good disco. Saturday, a ploughman’s supper was followed by more of Ali’s quiz. £131 was raised for charity. The AGM was held on Sunday morning and,
with no other nominees for the committee, the retiring committee were re-elected unanimously and will continue in their roles. The members’ meeting followed before we packed up to travel home.
Our New Year Celebrations will be from December 29 to 2 January at Colehill Middle School, Wimborne, BH21 7AB. We have use of the showers and school hall throughout the rally. On December 29, Keith will provide music at the Meet and Greet. On the 30, jacket potatoes with various fillings will be served, and followed by fruit strudel and cream. Then there will be the usual bingo, fun and games!
On New Year’s Eve, Andy will again cook us a wonderful roast dinner and sweets before we dance the night away into 2023 with Dave’s disco. The New Year Raffle will be held during the evening. More food on New Year’s Day - A buffet will be provided at the games evening to round off the rally. With food and entertainment included the cost is £75 per couple, £60 for singles and £90 for 3 members in a van. Please book with Andy and Gill on 07746 058606.
YORKSHIRE
Hi everyone. The AGM was held on Sunday 16 October at Wetherby Racecourse and a new committee was elected of which I am now the secretary, thank you to Julie, my predecessor, for all your help so far (you only appreciate all your hard work when you have to do yourself!). A big thank you to all last year’s committee for all the work organising everything and covering several roles each due to a shortage of committee members. Jacqui.
The weekend went well, we had 72 vans attend and the weather was kind to us, most of the rain was through the night. Friday night was full of fun with quiz sheets, musical quiz and bingo. Members strolled into Wetherby and some of us enjoyed a very pleasant lunch before finding our way back to the site. Saturday night we were entertained by singer Paul Garfitt, the results for the raffle and bonus ball were announced.
Finally we would like to say farewell to Tony (a long time member and past committee member) who has decided to hang up his rally shoes, we wish him all the best for the future.
Upcoming rallies: 20-22 January: Rolls Royce Social Club, Barnoldswick, BB18 6HJ (Bookable). 10-12 February: Wetherby Racecourse, LS22 5EJ (Valentines Rally).

OUT & ABOUT
Get ready for winter
After a scorching summer, the UK is bracing itself for a stark contrast in conditions in the winter months, with the Met Office warning of temperatures as low as -2C hitting parts of the UK already. Motorhomes are a huge investment and so maintaining your motorhome is imperative to ensure that it’s performing at peak condition especially ahead of the autumn and winter season as the temperature drops.
When it comes to maintenance of your motorhome, there are three areas you need to be aware of:
• Scheduled
• Emergency Understanding what each one means will help you with ensuring that you keep your motorhome in the best condition.
MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST
• Check that the lights are all working.
• Check the pressure in your tyres before each trip, and regularly inspect them.
• Make sure that you check the spare tyre as well – you may not realise it but the less you use the tyres the faster they age.
• Check the rims of the wheels look for any corrosion or kerbing damage as this can lead to the tyres becoming deflated.
• Check that the wheel nuts are tight 50 miles after the motorhome has been serviced, when wheels have been removed and before
WINTER MAINTENANCE
• You should start by giving your motorhome a thorough clean inside and out, making sure that you remove all food from cupboards
and refrigerators and give them a good clean to prevent mice infestations
• Clean carefully around the wheel wells along with the seals around the doors and windows and don’t leave any moisture behind
44 MOTOR CARAVANNER December 2022
Shane Malpass from We Buy Any Motorcaravan has a handy guide of top tips and advice on motorcaravan maintenance and servicing ahead of the off-season
“The less you use the tyres the faster they age.”
• It is a good idea to leave taps open so any excess water or air in the pipes can be released
• Make sure that you take out all bedding and blankets to avoid them from becoming mouldy, and close the blinds and curtains to prevent damage to the interior
from the sun
• If you have any appliances in your motorhome such as kettles and toasters, make sure they are unplugged and turn off the main breaker in your vehicle
• It is a good idea to leave cupboard doors open and fridge
doors open and, if you have a freezer in your motorhome, defrost it
• You should drain any water out of the pipes in your motorhome because, if water remains in the pipes and freezes, it can cause the pipes to expand and burst
• Covering your motorhome with a tarpaulin is a good idea in order to prevent corrosion caused by bad weather and stop the exterior becoming damaged
• To avoid a build-up of moisture in your motorhome over the winter, invest in a dehumidifier that you can run once in a while or place a large tub of silica gel inside your motorhome
• Make sure that all vents are covered as this will prevent insects from being able to gain access to your motorhome.

THIS MONTH...
WINTER TOURING
Dover from Over
hitch a ride on a cross channel ferry from Dover to Calais and discover the winter touring delights on offer just across La Manche in Pas de Calais.
The sense of excitement was palpable as the DFDS ferry, Côte d’Opale, backed onto her berth at the port of Dover – very soon we were going to drive Voyager up its ramps and set course for foreign soil. We were off to France for a spot of Gallic winter touring.
The region of Pas de Calais lies directly across La Manche (as the French prefer to call the English Channel) and our mighty ship made the crossing smoothly in just under 90 minutes, berth to berth. Once docked, we drove off and began to explore the Opal Coast, with its ever-changing landscape that never fails to surprise and delight.
From fishing villages to chic seaside resorts, it offers miles of fine sand interspaced with high cliffs that tempt you to stop, park up and discover its many treasures. Our first stop was Boulogne sur Mer. The Aire de Camping Car there overlooks the port and offers dramatic views across the channel. At ten euros a night, it is stonkingly good value and immediately brings into focus how wonderfully friendly France is to those of us who tour in what they call ‘camping cars’.
Even on a blustery and overcast day in November the port of Boulogne is a stunning place to park up. Just a stroll away, a thriving fish market is open each day and is well worth the visit if only to marvel at the value for money and variety. Boulogne old town, high up on the hill, cries out to be explored and should not be missed. From Boulogne, we drove to Berck-sur-Mer, another seaside town awash with life in the summer but one that still manages to intrigue and beguile
during winter months. Take the time to check out Succès Berckois, a family run sweet factory whose story began in 1918, in Paris, where Maria Bouet and Lucie Bosqué began making candy and biscuits in the family apartment.
While driving the road to Berck, the Commonwealth war grave cemetery at Étaples is worth stopping at. Exquisitely maintained, the cemetery is home to 11,500

graves remembering those who died in both World Wars. Our visit caused us to reflect and remember the supreme sacrifice made by so many so that we could live in freedom.
Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, commonly referred to as Le Touquet, is a commune near Étaples. This small seaside town is known for its
wide beach and casinos. Phare Le Touquet is a red-brick lighthouse with far-reaching views of the sea and countryside. When the winter wind blows and keeps you off the beach, the Musée du Touquet displays modern and contemporary art, plus works by regional artists. Étaples is on a river and its small boat marina is fascinating for those who love such things, and is the place from where guided river estuary trips can be organised.
Montreuil-sur-Mer
It is, however, the fortified town of Montreuil-sur-Mer, that keeps us coming back to the Pas de Calais region. This charming, walled town is famous for its imposing ramparts, cobbled streets, beautiful old houses, and churches, not to mention a jolly good selection of restaurants. The towns origins lie in Roman times when the sea ran up the estuary of

the Canche as far as Montreuil. Now, despite its seaside sounding name, it lies some miles inland and distant from the shore. As the estuary silted up, the port fell silent and finally fell to ruin. But slowly, as it began to redefine its identity, it began to flourish again. Sir Douglas Haig set up his headquarters here in the 1914-18 war, in collaboration with the French army. A statue of him, astride his horse, lies just behind the fountain in front of the ‘Place du Théâtre’ not far from the square that is, on Saturday, home to a weekly market. It is a good spot to buy, bread, vegetables, fruit, cheese, fish, meat, flowers, and all sorts of other local produce. We chose to stay at Camping La Fontaine des Clercs, a pretty campsite beside the river Canche below the town ramparts, which seems to offer the motorcaravanner everything, except perhaps, toilet paper! The town is a haven for foodies with a wonderful selection of fine food restaurants to suit every budget. Try Le Pot du Clape or La Patio, you will not be disappointed!
Artois region
The Opal Coast beaches of Pas de Calais may well be the jewels in the region’s crown whatever the season
December 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 53 >>
but often, in the winter months, it makes sense to limit exposure to the elements and head inland to explore attractions less dependent on sunshine. A visit to the Artois region is well worth that detour and taking the time to explore. Here you quickly sense the vibrancy of the dynamic towns, of Arras, Béthune and Lens with their delightful Art Deco and Flemish architecture. Artois is surrounded by places of interest;, UNESCO listed coal mining areas, WW1 battlefields and stunning belfries amongst other attractions. In Arras use the lift to climb the Belfry overlooking the market square. Drop below ground to discover the Boves, immersing yourself in the atmosphere of the limestone quarries – first mined back in the tenth century. The guided tour of the tunnels beneath the city streets reveals the underground history of Arras but be sure to wear warm clothing.
It was in the hills and plains of Artois, just over 100 years ago that much of the First World War took place. Indelibly ingrained in our memory, traces of this horror can still be seen to this day, perhaps most dramatically within the Wellington Quarries. Park your van in the spacious carpark and book a tour that takes you 20m below the surface, to gain an insight into the personal experiences of those brave First World War soldiers. It was here in 1916, that conscripts from New
Zealand were assigned the mission of organising and preparing an offensive, planned for the spring of 1917. 24,000 British Army soldiers were then billeted in these underground tunnels for a week while they waited for the signal to launch an attack.

Seeking to add sparkle to your visit? Then you should do so with local beer. Historical documents suggest beer has brewed in the Pays d’Artois since 1394. Arras annually hosts the Beer Potes Festival, dedicated to the world of brewing. In Athies, you can try your hand at being an apprentice brewer! Crushing, mashing, simmering, fermenting, this age-old craft gives up its secrets as you learn. Here you have fun while learning and, more importantly, leave with your own bottled beer labelled with your name.
The Battle of Agincourt is an event that many of us will recall studying in primary school. In the village of Azincourt, the Agincourt 1415 Visitor Centre, helps bring those memories back. It fills in gaps of your understanding of history when France and England were linked together by Royal families and wars. What makes a

visit here so enjoyable is that the exhibit is far more an interactive interpretation centre than just a museum. It is well done and will provide a good half days enjoyment for all ages.
If, after Azincourt, spirits are low then we suggest driving to Genièvre de Houlle in nearby Watten, one of the very few remaining genièvre gin distilleries in France and Belgium. Here, the Persyn family carry on the age-old art of distilling spirit, made from three types of locally grown grains and flavouring them with Juniper berries, harvested locally on just the one day a year and only then by those who hold a special licence. For just seven Euros you can tour the distillery and get to taste the incredibly wide and versatile product range and, adding even more value to your tour, walk away with your own tasting bottle of Genièvre.
St-Omer
The town of St-Omer is full of surprises. On the face of it a typical French market town, yet it is, what lies behind the success of the market, that makes this town so spectacular. Named after Saint Audomar, who brought Christianity to the area, it
was 7th Century monks who began to carve channels through the nearby sodden, peaty, marshland soil to cultivate it. A thriving market garden industry quickly grew to the point that today, more than 50 vegetable varieties are grown here, with cauliflowers in summer and endives (chicory) in winter, being the most prominent. We stayed in St-Omer for two nights at Camping Clairmarais, a site outside the town but delightfully close to the marshlands. They are a haven for those who love to walk, run or bike through surrounding nature.
If you want to learn more, then we recommend a visit to the fascinating, hands-on, Maison du Marais visitor centre in the middle of the town. Explore the family friendly exhibits to understand why the Marais (marshes) are so important to the people of St-Omer. Afterwards board a flat-bottomed electricpowered ‘Bacove’ barge for an >>

Maybe, because Pas de Calais is so easy to get to from the UK, there are those who will dismiss it as not being part of the real France, but we believe quite the opposite is true. Chock-a-block with enchanting fishing villages, pretty hamlets, ancient forests, historic towns, and magnificent beaches, backed by stunning coastal towns, this is authentic France at its best and it makes the perfect motorcaravan winter touring destination.
