Motor Caravanner - December 2024

Page 1

While I was writing this message, we had the first snow fall and the central heating had to be put on in the house, but it does enhance a wonderful Christmas feeling for the season's greeting ahead. I know that all the groups are preparing for their Christmas and New Year parties so that we can all enjoy a fabulous time together. This is a lot of hard work for them.

I would like to give thanks to all the Group committees individually for all the hard work and their time that they have freely given throughout the past year.

If you are travelling abroad, please stay safe by parking up in safe places and keep your passports and valuables under lock and key. Lock your doors when using service stations to fill up with fuel. Stay vigilant at all times. Enjoy the sunshine with a cocktail on the beach!

Keep a watchful eye out for the announcement of the 2025 National Rally; we should have news of where it is going to be held soon. I look forward to meeting you all there.

Are you driving illegally?

When did you last check your motorhome weight? Ministry figures suggest up to 80% of motorhomes may be operating overloaded!

Drive an overloaded motorhome and you not only risk a fine, you also risk your insurance and the safety of you and your passengers!

When looking to buy your next motorhome, insist on an accurate, up -to-date weight ticket! The brochure may state a MIRO or payload allowance, but these f igures can be out by as much as 5% (average 125kg).

This is more likely to be against you than in your favour, so it is always recommended that you visit a weighbridge to check your vehicle’s weight.

Need to uprate to carry more payload?

If you think you might have a payload issue, we can help. SvTech is able to increase/uprate the payload allowance on many makes and models.

Behind the scenes of every SvTech uprate, testing of a vehicle is carried out to create a ministry recognised test report, which is then use to cover subsequent uprates. This report and testing is vital in supporting an uprate, and is a legal requirement. Do not be fooled into thinking it’s just a paperwork exercise, as offered by others.

Reaching 70? Need to consider downrating?

SvTech can downrate your motorhome to 3500kg should you not pass, or wish to take, your medical. You must first weigh the motorhome to find out what payload you will have available at 3500kg . For further guidance on downrating please visit our website at www.svtech.co.uk/motor-home-downrates

To promote road safety, SvTech designed a free -to-use, Load Distribution Analysis (LDA) program which helps the user to know their likely laden weight and how best to position their goods about the vehicle to avoid an axle overload . Please visit our website www.svtech.co.uk/lda to find out how you can stay safely within your vehicle limits.

For any questions regarding these matters, please contact 01772 621800 or email, webenquiries@svtech.co.uk

CAN YOU HELP RUN OUR CLUB?

Council of Management update

Our Club is run by volunteers who are willing to sit on Group Committees and host rallies. Volunteers help to run our foreign visits, casual campsites, marshal at shows and on trade stands, supporting the National Rally, Junior Leaders organise activities for our junior members and some members quietly support from behind the scenes with coffee mornings…the list goes on. There are so many members working hard to give us all the opportunity to enjoy motorhoming, for which we are very grateful. All of them dedicate their time and energy freely and willingly – and it takes commitment.

We are now looking for members to join our Council of Management. Experience of being involved at a Group level is an advantage as it will have given you some insight into running our Club. Knowledge and skills gained in the workplace or previous voluntary roles could also be beneficial. You also need to meet the following requirements of our Articles

of Association which state that:

1. Only Full Members who are active motor caravanners with the use of a motor caravan shall be eligible for and hold office as directors of the Club. (26.1)

2. No person who is an official of another camping, caravan or motor caravan club, or is engaged or employed in any business which involves the selling of motor caravans, caravans, motor caravan or caravan accessories, camping equipment or the production of Club insignia, shall be eligible to be a member of Council or to be appointed to any office of the Club, except that the business of the Club and the businesses of any subsidiary company of the Club shall be excluded from the provisions of this Article.(26.4)

We hope you will give some thought to joining our Council of Management – our Club needs volunteers at every level. If so, we’d like to hear from you. For more information please contact

Ron Harris, Company Secretary, at Head Office. Nomination forms are available from Head Office.

Our National Rally will be held over the late May Bank Holiday, 22-27 May 2025, so keep that date free in your diaries. As soon as the final arrangements are confirmed we will release the details – so keep an eye on the Club website and this magazine.

Have you visited an MCC CL recently? We would love to hear about your visit. Your contribution may help other members to plan their trip – and highlight our CLs which will support the site owners. We need just a short account of your visit that could include information about the site, the owners, local amenities & transport and nearby places of interest to visit. Photographs are welcome. If needed, our Editor, Mark, is willing to give advice and support – all you have to do is contact him by email mark. shreeve@micropress.co.uk. Looking forward to hearing from you.

THE HILLS ARE ALIVE

The weather forecast was good with a great start to Friday and Saturday. Sunday was gloomy with the hills obscured by mist and cloud.

A wander around the show reminded me of the varied nature of this last show of the year. Halls stocked with ‘vans and accessories of all descriptions, and some of the regular outdoor stalls with them also. This would be the Club’s finish to the season's recruiting and trade was steady.

The sale items were typical but this

wonderful location set against the scenic backdrop of the Malvern Hills never fails to impress. Early morning sunshine on Friday and Saturday brought out a throng of hang gliders using the uplift from the sunshine and the ridge.

I counted about 12 gliders up aloft mid-morning.

Evening entertainment in the Severn Hall was well supported and the Headline Saturday night group were on for two sets. They didn’t half get those feet tapping!

A CAMPSITE WITH A DIFFERENCE...

LeoBay is quite unique as it is a campsite with fitting facilities, so if there’s that little something you need doing from replacing a bulb to a complete conversion we do it all. Our experience goes back 40 years. Our core experience is in auto electrics and vehicle security as well as vehicle diagnostics, we use factory diagnostic software to solve your problems. Trained in both vehicle and mains voltages we can also inspect and test your mains hook up too! Gas that’s no problem either! Now there’s a service that makes life simple, so next time you need help, come and stay at LeoBay, a nice cuppa on arrival, we will sort your problems while you relax on our 1st class site. There’s even a courtesy vehicle to use during your stay at LeoBay!

LeoBay is a site in a million, completely built by us and independent, so all are welcome whether you’re a club member

or not. We have drawn on our 25 years as motorhomers, collating all the best bits from the many sites we have visited over the years. The pitches are all wide hardstanding, with a 10amp hook up and your own grass area to spread out on, the site sits up on a hill over looking the sea with amazing views. On site facilities include a unique summer kitchen, where everyone can chat, relax and eat under cover, there’s a barbeque and pizza oven for you to use, or sit and relax by the open fire with a bottle or two. We like to make sure you’re warm and comfortable so the shower block is heated, with two large rooms, and to top it off the gardens are just splendid. Pets are welcome; the dog walks along the shore are great, there’s plenty of wildlife to watch. So as you can see it’s well worth a visit at just £25 per night all in.

BIG CITY

CAMPING

Frances and Michael

Howorth look at the top opportunities to take your motorcaravan into a big city and have a jolly good night out on the tiles.

If, like us, you don’t fancy forking out big bucks for inner city hotels the chances are you will want to take your motorcaravan with you when visiting big cities. And that’s fine, until you try and park overnight. The sad fact is that campsites and cities are not natural bedfellows and that’s a shame.

Bringing a campervan into town for an overnight stay is frequently more comfortable than staying in a hotel with the the joy of having everything you need immediately to hand. Then there is food and drink, which is much more convenient in your own van and probably far better quality at a fraction of the cost.

So, if that’s the case, where can members park up overnight to take in a big city dinner or a show? The answer is there but these overnight stops take some searching out.

Here are our top twenty tips for big city camping.

Belfast

Belfast

If you ever tour Northern Ireland, the chances are that city of Belfast features at either the start or end of the tour. But do not think of it as just a ferry departure or arrival port. There is a lot more to this city and it should be thought of as a destination in its own right. Belfast has a world-famous maritime history. As the home of Harland & Wolff, once the greatest ship builders in the world, the city was the birthplace of many iconic vessels including the renowned RMS Titanic.

The tourist attraction that celebrates that great ship is one of the city’s most fascinating features. It is located next to the original drawing offices and slipways, in the very place where Titanic was designed, built and launched in 1912. It tells the story of the Titanic, from her conception in the early 1900s, through her construction and launch, to her maiden voyage and subsequent place in history.

Birmingham

Birmingham

Britain’s second city Birmingham lies at the heart of England’s West Midlands region. It is a hotbed of culture that is richly diverse and just waiting to be explored. Crammed with Industrial Revolution-era landmarks oozing with 18thcentury history, the city is home to a network of canals. Many of them radiate from Sherborne Wharf, a trendy spot lined with cafes and bars. Check out the city’s architecture or delve into its culture at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery which is known for pre-

in Newtownabbey on the shores of Belfast Lough and enjoy panoramic views from Belfast to Bangor. It is just five miles north of Belfast on the Causeway Coastal Route close to bus routes, train station, ferry terminals and the University of Ulster.

Raphaelite masterpieces.

Close by the city’s airport and the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Somers Wood is a childfree campsite set tranquil surroundings. One mile outside Meriden village, it is located alongside the Stonebridge Golf Course with its 27 hole golf course and 21 bay floodlit driving range. Packington Somers Coarse Fishery is a few minutes walk away from the site. Keen anglers will enjoy the choice of well-stocked pools and specimen lakes at this premier Midlands fishing venue.

Brighton

The Chalky Downs Campsite located at Bevendean Farm is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, only two miles from the sea and the city centre.

Or you could take flight to Aerospace Bristol, home of the last Concorde supersonic airliner to fly, Alpha Foxtrot. Both Knights Folly Farm Campsite or The Stables Campsite offer proximity to the city and the attractions we list above. Each makes a good base from which to explore the area further.

Glasgow

Famed for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture, Glasgow has a rich legacy from the city's 18th–20th-century prosperity due to trade and shipbuilding. Sitting astride the River Clyde in Scotland's western Lowlands the port city boasts a national cultural hub, home to institutions including the Scottish

Edinburgh

Scotland’s capital city abounds with unrivalled, multi-sensory experiences waiting to be enjoyed by all. There are plenty of exciting things to do and see here, from stunning architecture and endless winding streets to the awe-inspiring castle perched atop a dormant volcano. Edinburgh Castle houses important Scottish artefacts, such as the Honours of Scotland, the oldest crown jewels in the UK, and The Edinburgh

Opera, Scottish Ballet and National Theatre of Scotland, as well as acclaimed museums and a thriving music scene.

Red Deer Village Holiday Park is a 5 star holiday park, conveniently situated on the doorstep of Glasgow, just off the A80, one of Scotland’s main arterial routes to the North. The Park is close to good public transport links, with regular buses and trains into the city centre. The spacious site has 26 hardstanding pitches with electric hookup.

Stone of Destiny, an ancient symbol of the Scottish monarchy.

Only 4 miles from the heart of the city, Mortonhall Caravan Park is located inside the acres of a tranquil country estate. Take a breezy stroll around Cardiff Bay across the sea barrage to Penarth Marina. There’s a flat tarmac pathway so it’s ideal for pushchairs or bikes.

Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park is a council run campsite just over half a mile away from the city centre. Situated in beautiful parkland close to the heart of the city it makes an ideal base from which to explore the city’s many and varied attractions. Despite its central location, there’s a truly rural feel to the site, making it easy to forget that the city centre and the waterfront attractions are just a short walk away.

London

Leeds

Often called the unofficial capital of Yorkshire, Leeds is a beautifully compact city. Its size makes it possible to get a real flavour of what this diverse city has to offer. It is a world-class shopping centre and boasts a thriving independent food scene.

Just eight miles away is Glenfield Caravan Park. Just four miles from an A1(M) junction, this beautifully secluded south-facing family-run park, is set in three acres of idyllic countryside. Open throughout the year, it offers 30 hard standings for motorcaravans. Use this site to visit Leeds city centre and linger longer to visit the equally delightful city of Harrogate.

Liverpool

Where the River Mersey meets the Irish Sea lies Liverpool, a key trade and migration port from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. It is also, famously, the hometown of The Beatles. Some of Liverpool's most stunning buildings are more than just their architecture with immersive experiences inside St George’s Hall, and Liverpool Cathedral. Take a ferry

London

We are not going to list reasons why you might want to visit London in a Motorcaravan but if you do, its best to find a campsite on the outskirts with excellent connections into the city using trains, buses or the underground. One site that we use from time to time is, Apps Court Camping near Hampton Court and a

short walk from very good transport links. Straightforwardly accessible from the M25, M3, and A3, Apps Court is within easy reach of the West End and tourist attractions including Hampton Court Palace and Windsor Castle. It is handy too for visiting theme parks at Chessington World of Adventures, Thorpe Park, and Legoland.

Newcastle Upon Tyne

and cruise the waterfront to view the iconic mercantile buildings known as the "Three Graces" – Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building – stand on the Pier Head. For an overnight stay consider the Hidden Corner Campsite or the RV park inside Liverpool Marina in Coburg Dock.

Newcastle Upon Tyne located on the River Tyne's northern bank opposite Gateshead to the south, Newcastle has a lot to offer visitors. Check out Grainger Market an iconic shopping destination in the city centre with over 110 independent stalls or the Quayside Sunday Market which runs alongside the river with street food vendors, gift stalls, and more. Camp at Brockwell Wood 7 miles away from Newcastle upon Tyne. Located in 26 acres of ancient woodland, it is a campsite for those who want a back to nature experience – no shops, toilets or showers at the site, just a back-tobasics camping.

Sheffield

Nottingham

Visit Nottingham to see history, legend, and modernity seamlessly mix. Consider the Castle Museum and Art Gallery, rebuilt many times since the medieval era. In the Lace Market area, once the centre of the world’s lace industry, the Galleries of Justice Museum has crime-related exhibits. five miles from the centre of the city is Holme Pierrepont Country Park. This 19-acre National Water Sports Centre campsite has 40 hard-standing pitches, 136 electrical hook-ups and a recently refurbished shower and toilet block. Bus services stop right outside the main gates, the 11A bus runs Monday – Saturday and the 11C runs on Sunday.

Sheffield

Often referred to as the Outdoor City because the Peak District is in its backyard, the city powers two universities, a thriving independent scene, a sense of community and adventure, along with its famously friendly welcome. The Fox Hagg Farm campsite offers a countryside location a short distance of the city. Open April – late October, its facilities include hot showers, clean toilets, a chemical toilet disposal poin.

Nottingham

Winchester

Often referred to as the ‘City of Kings’, Winchester famously played host to King Alfred. His statue is to be found in the high street, and his influence everywhere else. During the Saxon times Winchester was the Capital of England.

Winchester is one of those enlightened cities that offers motorcaravan parking in the city centre. We use the Coach Park with 7 dedicated overnight bays in the centre of town. For a more formal site try the Hookpit Farm Caravan Site 3 miles north of the city. It is part of a working farm and has lovely views. No shower/toilet block but each pitch has electrical hookup and water.

York

Southampton

The city gateway to the New Forest, itself a mecca for motorcaravan tourists, Southampton is home to the SeaCity Museum, that displays an interactive model of the liner Titanic, which departed from here in 1912. Nearby, Southampton City Art Gallery specialises in modern British art. Solent Sky Museum features vintage aircraft like the

Southampton

iconic Spitfire. Tudor House & Garden displays artifacts covering over 800 years of history, including a penny-farthing bike. Situated three miles East of the City Centre Sunnydale Farm Touring Park offers 41 motorcaravan pitches and bus stops nearby for easy access into the centre of town. Closer to the city, the MDL Marina car park has no facilities but is in a great location.

A vibrant festival city with Roman roots and a Viking past, York offers an adventure for everyone. No trip here is complete without seeing the York Minster. The International Ghost Research Foundation declared York the most haunted city in history based on over 500 ghost hauntings within its ancient city walls.

When camping overnight consider York Auction Market a CAMpRA accredited 5-star rated site on edge of town that offers motorcaravan paring for 48 hours. Otherwise try the river side Poplar Farm Caravan Park, family run site 4 miles from the city centre.

CITY SLICKERS

Five city break tips from Auto Sleepers

1

Planning your trip

Consider how long you will travel, what activities you want to do, and what meals you will eat. Use free apps and online resources to find the best routes and suitable parking in the city.

2

Navigating the city

Driving a motorhome in a city can be challenging due to heavy traffic and complex roadways. To make it easier, use a camper-specific GPS system like the Garmin or Avtex Tourer, which maps your route based on the height and weight of your

motorhome. Also, be aware of road restrictions, such as height and propane restrictions, which are common in urban areas

3

Timing your travel

Try to time your travel through big cities for Sundays, holidays, or non-rush hours to avoid heavy traffic. Early mornings, noon, and late afternoons are typically the busiest times.

4

Parking and campsites

Finding a place to park your motorhome in a city

can be tricky. It's often best to park outside the city and use public transport to get around. Look for campsites near major cities that offer easy access to public transport and city attractions.

5

Cost-saving tips

Travelling by motorhome can help offset some of the expensive costs of city travel. Staying at campsites outside the city centre can save you money and by using public transport you can reduce the hassle and cost of parking in the city.

The HPC Hydraulic Levelling System is truly a step ahead for motorhome owners. Covering all requirements expected from a levelling system. it is simply and quickly operated using the on-board touch-screen controls or operated remotely from an iPhone 5 and above or an Android phone via a Bluetooth free app. Accompanied by the AS Air Suspension system, all your suspension and levelling needs are catered for. At AS Air Suspension UK Ltd, we seek to continually improve and stay ahead of our competitors. Using innovative materials to reduce the weight of the systems, without any compromise to quality.

areas, each with its own section in the guide. Every aire’s location is marked clearly on a separate large-scale fold-out map [b] and also on map extracts within the guide itself. All the featured aires have their own entry [c]. If there are more than one in a town or village, each is listed separately. Every entry contains two colour photographs, numerical GPS coordinates, plus a concise written description of location and places of interest nearby to give context. A row of symbols indicate facilities on site and in the immediate area. Additional information contains the method of vehicular access, cost and maximum duration of stay, plus important details such as if a jeton (token-coin) is required to operate the fresh water, waste water and toilet emptying points. Unlike in many campsite guides, the featured aires have all been recently evaluated in person and the date of the information update is noted. VICARIOUS MEDIA MARCHES ON

Founders Chris Doree and Meli George (pictured right) set off on a year-long motorhome tour of Europe over twenty years ago. On their return they thought about the ‘highs and lows’ of the trip and recalled ‘things that they learned the hard way’, mostly because guides to such a venture were then ‘in hen’s teeth’ territory. Thus, they wrote and

To be accurate they are joint favourite with the corkscrew! The RRP of £37.50 is not insignificant, but with ever spiralling commercial campsite fees, the initial outlay can be recouped within the first couple of overnight stays. Note special offer below!

published what became a definitive information source for potential and practising motorcaravanners, both at home and abroad. ‘Go Motorhoming and Campervanning’ [d] was a critically acclaimed success and has guided many readers. Wellillustrated, honest, and easily read, newer editions are still available today. Its success was the catalyst for forming the publishing company Vicarious Books and later Vicarious Media. Chris and Meli are still very much ‘at the helm’ and their on-line shop offers a variety of publications on motorcaravanning, travel, road trips, sites, aires, stellplatz, and other

stopovers, as well as fold-out maps and bound atlases. They are also the UK agents for the ACSI European site discount scheme [e] and for France Passion. The latter enables folk to stay in their motorcaravan in the heart of rural France at vineyards, farms, orchards, cheese makers, and at similar gourmet locations…more than 2,000 actually!

OMNIA OVEN

SYNIO SHOWER ATTACHMENT

found we got far better (unburnt)

For motorcaravans without an oven, the Omnia stove top oven from Sweden is a godsend. Just pop it on your stove and there it is! An instant oven. The makers tell us that if you can do it in a regular oven – heat, bake or cook – you can do it in an Omnia. And our tests prove they are right even though we confess, our first attempts were not something the company would want to use in their advertising material! The Omnia requires no installation and works with a variety of heat sources to provide a convenient, versatile way to prepare your favourite foods. The three-part device utilises heat from the stove and generates both top and bottom heat. A circular aluminium food container with centre hole sits on a matching stainlesssteel base that is placed over the heat source. The heat spreads along the bottom of the food container and as it rises the specially designed lid with ventilation hole diverts the heat over the top of the container. We found we got far better (unburnt) results having persevered and used the device with the optional extras that allow for better heat distribution.

We find it particularly annoying when we find campsites charging a lot for the use shower block facilities and yet cannot find it in themselves to trust their customer regarding water use. Push button valves are used in many locations like gyms and back packing hostels and while users find it frustrating whilst having a shower, they are seldom paying ‘use of shower’ fees quite as high as campsites charge. Push button showers spoil the customer experience. They might save water and energy because folk might spend less time in the shower, but people can still push the button as many times as they want, and that almost defeats the intention. So, we were chuffed to find an adaptor that cleverly gets round the problem. Just clip it on at the start and remove

BLACKSTONE 22 INCH GRIDDLE

Winchester it at the end of the shower. It still cuts off the water at the end of the shower as intended. Design engineer Jason Clark developed the Synio Shower Attachment because after swimming he found it frustrating to keep pressing the shower button every 30 seconds. He began making the device by hand pouring tough plastic into silicone moulds. At first, he made them on a supply and demand basis, but as word spread, demand for the product quickly began to outstrip supply. So, he invested in an injection moulding system and now sells the refined product online for £9.99. https:// synio.uk/collections/products

While everyone loves a BBQ, there are times when its use as an outdoor cooking appliance is limited. Not so with the Blackstone 22 inch Griddle.

have

Portable and compact, this flat top griddle is easy to transport, and its heavy-duty construction makes for versatile cooking. We have found it can handle whatever culinary creations we want to whip up, be that for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The rolled steel cooking surface allows us to cook the same foods as we do on a traditional barbecue while also being ideal for making pancakes, sauteing veggies, and lot more. Its surprisingly large cooking space has room for up to 14 man size burgers! Two independently controlled H-shaped burners ensure optimal heat distribution allowing us to cook multiple foods at different temperatures simultaneously. It has an innovative grease management system allowing us to deal with excess fats faster and with less mess. We simply push excess fat through the slot at the back of the griddle plate and into the collection cup for easy removal. We use the version with the hood but a cheaper model without the lid is also available.

BUDDY SOAP BAG

Waterproof and leakproof, this soap bag is just what we were looking for. We had noticed that carrying a dry bar of soap and then bringing it back to the van when it was wet and slippery just was not working for us. So, we began our search for a solution. When we found the buddy Soap Bag from Travel Ace, we knew we had to put it to the test. For less than £10 this clever little bag is used as a container for our soap when we trek across the campsite to the shower block. Its suction cup and carabiner hook allow us to stick

it temporarily on the shower room door or wall and we do not lose our soap while we shower. The magic happens however on the way back to the van because we have found that the wet soap does not ooze water through the bag onto the rest of your gear. What is more when we get back to the van, we just hang the bag up and the soap dries inside it naturally. We are not sure how, it could be magic or science, but then again who cares? Because it works!

Deadline: 5th of the month for inclusion in the following month's magazine

26 Vans (including 2 Chiltern and 1 Essex) came to our Whittlesey rally. Everyone arrived on time and it didn’t take too long to get everyone parked up. Friday night was Bingo night which was profitable for some. Saturday was a free day to explore the shops in Whittlesey, go to Weatherspoon’s or catch the bus into Peterborough. Saturday evening, we met in the hall for soup cooked by Ben & Stan, (they did a marvelous job) and French stick. This was enjoyed by all and there was even enough for seconds. This was followed by a combined music & film quiz. A song was played and you had to guess what film the song was in and what year the film was released. It was a bit different to some of our usual music quizzes, and once we got used to it fun was had by all. This was followed by 2 games of Hoy. Sunday morning, we met for tea, coffee and Chairman's chat, followed by Bens Bonus ball and the raffle.

What a fantastic weekend we had at our AGM/ Halloween rally at Wells Next the Sea. The sun was shining as 49 vans arrived. We had 1 Essex and 1 East Midlands van also join us. Friday night we had wine, cheese & biscuits. The tea urns were also on and raffle tickets on sale. Cash bingo was played which was beneficial to some. Saturday morning it started foggy but that did not matter as we were back in the hall at 10am for our AGM.

New Committee are as follows, Chairman Keith Poole, Secretary Sandra Glendenning, Treasurer Keith Boreham, Rally Officer Teresa Poole, Vice Chair Ben Allen. Joining Mal & Janet Heaps, Julie & Paul Bentall are Jackie & Terry LawsRandell and Stan Glendenning. Thank you to Carol Biggs, Annette Boreham and Paul Girling for all their help over the past year. As Carol had been a committee member for many years, she was presented with a voucher to go treat herself. Saturday afternoon members decorated

their tables and Tony & Martin decorated the hall. We had ghosts, dragons, pumpkin men, huge spiders and far too many others to mention. Thank you for such a wonderful display. Saturday night we danced to Simon Rose, he played music to suit all tastes and played requests.

Sunday morning the urns were back on for tea & coffee. This was followed by Chairmans chat, Benjy’s Bonus balls and the raffle, with five members having to sit on the “chairs of shame”. Thank you to all for making it a great weekend.

Advanced information for 2025 bookable rallies. Booking will open at 12 noon on Sunday 12th January 2025. The first two weeks will be bookings for Anglia members only and from Sunday 26th January bookings will open to all areas. Information will be in the 2025 programme which will be handed out at our Christmas rally or posted to those of you not attending.

Upcoming Rallies: 6-8 December Xmas rally at Sheringham High School NR26 8ND Start time 5pm. 30 Dec to 2 Jan is our New Year Party at Terrington Village Hall, PE34 3LZ Start time 1.00pm. Both rallies are fully booked but contact Teresa on 07739 463321 to see if there are any cancellations.

AVON

Avon had a fantastic early Halloween at Gartell Light Railway. We started off slowly with a brain-teasing ‘Not in a Pub, Pub Quiz’, on Friday. Well done the Smarts, Mouldings, Cox’s and Lovells, you were the dream team who won by one point.

The AGM was on Saturday morning, then Haley, Max and Rex assisted by Grandad, decorated the hall. Thank you, you did a great job. We all gathered for an early home-made supper. There were no leftovers and many thanks and compliments. Thank you to all concerned in

GROUP

the preparation, serving and clearing up, your help was appreciated.

Suitably attired in our costumes we re-gathered to be entertained by (Tim) Bassetts Allsorts who sang songs from ‘our era’. Whether you sang along or danced a jig or two, he was an excellent singer, and it was a great evening, reminiscent of many past rallies.

There were plenty of raffle prizes, and the winner of the fantastic and scary display of carved pumpkins was Kevin. We’re a bit crafty, - the prize was a huge tub of chocolates, ideal for sharing, so we all got one or two. Thanks Kevin.

The AGM itself ran smoothly, but, with no new nominees coming forward and some of the committee standing down, an EGM has been called for 18 January. Some of the current committee are willing to man key posts for 2025 but we need more members to be able to continue. Committee work is not onerous providing it is shared out. Please come along on 18th, and consider if you can help. The alternative is that after 45 years, a successful 2024, increasing numbers of attendees and membership, the group could fold. We have a full rally programme ready to go, please come and help ensure it happens. Four (or more) additional people on the committee, and rally hosts is all that is needed.

In the meantime, the 2024 committee will continue until the EGM to ensure the Christmas and New Year rallies can go ahead as planned

New Year will be celebrated at Whitstone School, Shepton Mallet. 4 nights at £17pupn (£15 pn singles) plus £1 per adult rally fee. Prices includes entertainment, (the ever popular DAZ.), a 2 x course supper, music, quizzes and games. Bookings are not taken, we have plenty of room and all MCC members will be welcome. The theme for fancy dress on New Year’s Eve is “Come Dressed as a Book Title”. I’m looking forward to seeing all the creative ideas. All parking will be on hardstanding and the lovely heated rooms will be open from when we get up, to when we roll into bed. Will we see you there? You will receive a very warm welcome.

Upcoming Rallies: 5 - 8 December Fromebridge Mill, Whitminster, GL2 7PB. 29 December-2 January, Whitstone School, Charlton Road, Shepton Mallet, BA4 5PF. EGM 18 January 2025 Highbridge Community Hall, Market Street, Highbridge, TA9 3BP.

CHILTERN

Bledlow CC. 10 Chiltern vans attended, and there was also 1 van from Lancashire which was stopping off at rallies on its way home from Europe. The weather had been challenging in the days leading up to the rally, but we managed to park on the edge of the cricket ground, and get off safely again.

We were very warmly welcomed in the cosy Club House for the Friday and Saturday evenings' catch up and games. On Saturday, some of the group walked along the Icknield Way into Chinnor, about 2 miles away, where there is a

Community Cafe and other facilities.

Sunday's coffee morning was delayed so we could watch the passing steam train on the adjacent railway line, which runs from Chinnor to Princes Risborough. Many thanks to Di, Steve and Dave for organising and running an excellent weekend.

Alameda School, Ampthill. 23 vans attended, and we were joined by day visitors for the AGM on Saturday. This was preceded on Friday evening by a commemoration for our late President, Del Gosling, and his wife Bet. We were joined by their daughters and families from Dorset, with whom we shared memories and photos while we indulged in a faith supper.

The Saturday morning AGM took place, and all the Committee members were thanked for last year's hard work. They all stood again, and were re-elected, with two additional members joining them, Pearl and Robin Spence, welcome back. The Committee then announced our new President: Christine Bedwell, many congratulations in return for all the support and effort she and husband Mike have put into the group.

Saturday afternoon was free to walk into Ampthill or around the Alameda parkland, and although the weather was overcast, at least it stayed dry. Saturday evening's entertainment included motorhome racing (not real ones!) which everyone found great fun. Followed by an interesting music quiz which ignited much discussion.

We were made very welcome by Alameda Middle School, which had plenty of playground parking and the use of their facilities. Thanks to Bev for both write ups.

Upcoming rallies: Dec 30 - 2 Jan 25 New Years Eve Celebration at The Hurst School, RG26 2QR Booking Required. Feb 7 - 9 Barnstones OX17 1QU. 8 Feb Day meet at Great Bourton Community Hall OX17 1QU.

EAST MIDLANDS

Brownhills rally, 26 vans were welcomed and parked up by the stewards Robin & Barbara and Paul & Anne which included one new member to the East Midlands group. Friday evening held the usual bingo and quizzes, always

Chiltern Group

well received by the members. John Kelly was celebrating his 75th birthday which was complemented by the superb buffet provided by his family and helped by friends for all to enjoy.

A free day on Saturday allowed those visiting to view the motorhomes in the showroom and also to have a wander around the town of Newark in the very pleasant weather that blessed the weekend. The Saturday evening provided a couple more quizzes with themes of motorhomes and music and followed by a game of Open The Box won by Steve. The closing speech and raffle were held on the Saturday evening while we had the use of the showroom for our activities.

The Colsterworth rally was well attended by 32 vans which included a visitor from the the Anglia group all parked up with no trouble on the firm grass field. Once settled there was tea and coffee for all in the hall while they paid their rally fees and sat for a chat or visit the social club next door to sample what was on offer in their “Happy Hour”. Friday evening started with a wonderful buffet organised by Jane with help to set it all out from some willing helpers. Following this we had our game of bingo, called with some dry humour, by our guest caller Pete. Dave P organised the annual conker championship with some marathon efforts by Linda & Dave C leading to the final between Greg and Bob, Greg being the crowned the new champion. The final treat for the evening was a quiz with a culinary theme held by Bob.

The 61st AGM of the group was held on the Saturday morning with the new committee line up being very similar to the outgoing line up, with Paul being confirmed as Chairman, John taking on the role of Rally Secretary, and Dave B joining Bernadette on the welcoming team. There were two awards made, Jane taking the Hazel Turk Trophy for her exceptional contributions to the club over the past year and the Albert Hildred Award for most rallies attended won by Paul & Anne.

The evening entertainment was provided by Professional singer Laura Elson who had everyone dancing or singing, or both throughout her show. Finally on the Sunday morning the raffle and closing speech by the chairman. All vans safely left the field without issue despite the rain.

Upcoming Rallies: 6th-8th December, Springfields 007 weekend, PE12 6ET. 13th-15th December, Corby Glen Christmas Party, NG33 4NU. 30th December-2nd January, Ingoldmells, BOOKABLE, PE25 1NL.

EAST WESSEX

Our AGM at Weeke in October was attended by seventeen vans, with one visitor from Sussex. Friday night was welcome night and a game of Who Dares Wins (apologies, cribbed from Kent group) which went down very well. On Saturday some went into town and others explored the local shops. In the afternoon we had a few games of card bingo and then a simple guess the theme tune quiz. After the buffet on Saturday night our main entertainment

was by Anna Nightingale singing 60s/70s/80s and requests. She went down very well and ended her act with an encore; we will certainly be asking her back in the future. It was noted during her performance that Graham turned down a tall leggy blonde!

Our AGM on Sunday was well attended with some day visitors too. We easily put together a new committee of eight members and have a full rally programme for the next year. Committee and Rallies will be on the website (eastwessex.uk).

Upcoming rallies: 30 Dec-2 Jan: Burnham Copse Primary School, New Church Road, Tadley, RG26 4HN. New Year. Music and party night (31st), fun and games (1st). Quiz, raffle. ESSEX

Mayflower School Billericay 11-13th October. This was our 62nd AGM and we are pleased to say it was a successful and enjoyable rally with a good amount of members supporting us by attending.

Friday evening we all enjoyed games of bingo, sold and drew raffle and had a lovely catch up with friends.

Saturday morning our AGM started at 10am. We are now lucky enough to have 11 committee members and we will all work well together for the year ahead. Thank you to past committee for all your hard work.

Our Chairman is standing for his 2nd year running , Nick Rogers, as well as our club secretary Liz Dyer. We also have a new treasurer Paul Blowers who has kindly taken over from Gary Green. Thank you Gary for all your hard work being club treasurer.

After the members meeting which also went well with some interesting comments we cleared the hall and most of us walked or caught the bus into Billericay for lunch and drinks and a relaxing stroll around the shops before heading back to the school for a busy evening.

The evening started off with a very nice buffet with so much food supplied by Adams Catering, followed on by an evening of entertainment by JoJo's Disco who played a good variation of music which most had a dance too.

Everyone enjoyed the evening and said the food and disco was brilliant. Sunday morning we had Chairchat, cakes, biscuits teas/coffees etc before all heading off home. A big thank you to everyone who helped over the weekend. Well done Essex! A great weekend had by all.Sue Rogers

Mayflower school was our November weekend rally. Jan and Pete were our hosts. Music was the theme, Friday evening there was a picture quiz, music quiz and of course two games of bingo. We finished the evening off with a bit of line dancing. During the day we all went into

Saturday evening Jan and Pete laid on a ploughman buffet, homemade cakes and some wine, beer and sparkling wine to celebrate their 50th wedding Anniversary with their friends in the mcc. Everyone had a fabulous time, three more games were played and the winning team were the rolling stones (ie our friends from the Anglia group who joined us for the weekend ) we finished Saturday evening off with some dancing with everyone commenting what a brilliant weekend. Sunday we met up for tea, coffee and biscuits and of course our chairman nick updating us on any news.

Jan and Pete would like to thank everyone who attended the rally for making their anniversary so memorable. We also had a minutes silence for the terrible tragedy in Spain, so sad, so many lives lost.

MOTORCYCLE

A Christmas Message from our chairman:

After another successful season for the Motorcycle Group, I would like to wish all our members MCG and MCC a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Stay safe out there wherever you are spending the Festive Season, be it on your Motorcycle (brave), in your Motorhome or at home. We are looking forward to the Spring, with the salt washed from the roads and potholes all filled in, so we can get out on our steel horses again to ride in the warm sunlight with all of our mates.

Have a great time everyone. Martin, Chair, MCG.

NENE VALLEY

Thank you to the members that attended the AGM at Cogenhoe for your cooperation regarding the parking. A majority came in their cars, as we were unable to use the field due to soggy conditions, anyone that got stuck in a motorhome would have been on their own, as the Bowls Club only have a lawnmower. The meeting went well, and we now have a new Committee ready to get to work.

Tony and Katleen Daniels stepped down from the committee with Paul Betts taking over Tonys former role as Chairman. Margaret Harris will become the new Treasurer and John Harris as Rally Officer and also handle Bookings. Tony spoke about his close association with Nene Valley since it broke away from East Midlands group 41 years ago and during the members meeting Paul Betts presented Tony and Kathleen with a gift from the group. Tony will now revert to his position of Honorary President. The full list of committee members can be found on the group website. We celebrated this with a very nice Buffet tea, which was enjoyed by all.

At the members meeting some details of the planned rallies for 2025 were given which will include THS’s at Exmouth, Rye, and Reydon. NORTHERN COUNTIES

This is my first report for Northern Counties having taken over from Paula Edwards at the AGM. Thanks to Paula for her work in the past.

After being cancelled last year due to weather Brunton Tractor Rally went ahead this year as planned. The annual vintage tractor rally in Northumberland allow the club to attend the event free and in return members give time to help the organisers. 12 units attended but typical British weather meant the event was cancelled on the Sunday. Members were still able to enjoy various stalls at the event on the Saturday and the beer tent with entertainment on the Saturday also.

The AGM was moved from Guisborough to Redcar Racecourse. In total 34 units attended, 27 from Northern Counties and we welcomed 5 units from Lancashire and 2 from Yorkshire. The AGM was held on the Saturday with more members attending just for the meeting. Thanks go to the outgoing committee, Dave Hird Chairman, Carole Brown Treasurer and George Jobson Secretary for their work in running the club. Thanks also to John Tennant who stepped down as the Safety Officer. A new committee was elected with Mark Lang as Chairman, Susan Lang as Treasurer and Rally Officer, Peter and Linda Ridgers joint secretaries and committee members John and Marilyn Bargh and Pam Brack.

The rally programme for 2025 is now available on the website. Whilst Susan Lang has taken on the role of rally officer again we are still looking for more members to support the committee and in particular the rally officer role. Sue is happy to talk through what is involved and will support anyone interested. In addition at the time of writing hosts are still required for the 2025 programme. If you are new to hosting, support and information is available either speak to any committee member or reach out to the committee via the clubs website. Alternatively offering to be a co-host will give you an insight into what is involved.

The AGM coincided with the Halloween rally and Saturday night saw many members enter into the spirit (no pun intended) of Halloween. Costumes aren’t obligatory but the those that do take part always look amazing. Members enjoyed a delicious buffet on the Saturday evening and were entertained by a singer.

Up to date information can be found on the clubs website www.mccnortherncounties.co.uk and also on the Facebook page Northern Counties MCC.

On behalf of the committee of Northern Counties I would like to wish all members of the MCC a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Denise Hurst

Upcoming Rallies: 6 – 8 December Darlington Auction Mart, Humbleton Park, Darlington DL2 2XX. This the Christmas rally and is a bookable event. Start time 3pm. 29 December – 2 January Redcar Racecourse, West Dyke Road, Redcar TS10 2AA. This is the New Year Rally and is a bookable event. Start time12 noon.

Newtownards Rally. On arrival to Regents House Grammar School on Friday we were warmly greeted by the hosts for the weekend Harry and Jane and Mervyn and Maud.

In the evening, we went over to the hall for a catch up and a game of table top bingo. There were a few happy winners but Jane won the top prize of £20 (nothing to do with her husband Harry calling out the cards).

On Saturday morning some of the Ladies met up for a bit of knitting and crocheting, while others played a game or two of Rummikub. In the afternoon most people went up town to do a bit of shopping. Some got their photos

taken with Paddington bear who was visiting Newtownards and some people met up and went for a bite to eat.

On Saturday evening Albert entertained us for a while with his piano skills and played some beautiful music for us all to enjoy and later Robbie H had us all on the dance floor with a great selection of tunes.

Sunday morning Selma and team had tea, coffee and biscuits for all. Our chairman Sam thanked everyone for coming and explained the points system for attendance. He welcomed new members John, Debbie and Katie and Aurora and Roy to the club. Victor and Eleanor got a free weekend voucher for attendance. Number plate draw winners were Kevin and Nikki and Brian and Hayley. Happy birthday wishes to David McFadden.

Londonderry Halloween Rally. What a great weekend of craic and entertainment at Brigade Cricket Club in Derry/ Londonderry. Thank you to our wonderful hosts Selma, Elmer, Audrey and Andy.

On Wednesday evening there was great fun to be had over in the Clubhouse (where we received a very friendly welcome from the staff). Tables were beautifully decorated for Halloween and some members got into the spirit of the evening by dressing up in their spookily fabulous costumes. Andy and Sam also channelled their inner Bruce Forsythe, treating us to a few entertaining games of Play Your Cards Right. The lucky winners were Anna Grant and Robert Coulter.

On Thursday afternoon we were given the warmest of welcomes by the Cricket Club's Lunch Club who invited us all to join them for them for food and afternoon entertainment in the Clubhouse (provided by the fabulously energetic and gregarious Gary McMusic). What an unexpected treat! - Dancing, sing-a-longs, audience participation and wonderful camaraderie. We honestly could not have been made to feel more welcome! Afterwards, our Chairman, Sam Arlow, thanked members of the Lunch Club for their outstanding hospitality.

Then later in the evening members could make their way into the City of Derryto witness the amazing Halloween Parade and firework display. The lovely mild weather went a long way to enhancing everyone's enjoyment of the festivities. What a fabulous two days!

On Friday morning there was a quick get together in the car park where our Chairman thanked the hosts and all the members who attended this weekend and reminded everyone of the next rally. Number plate draw was won Harry Campbell and Selma McMullan. And last, but not least, happy anniversary to Maud and Mervyn.

We arrived at Limavady High School just as the light was beginning to fade on a crisp, dry November’s Evening. The Hosts Mary and Stephen Glenn and Co-Hosts Dawn and David Caskey greeted us warmly and soon had vans checked in and parked up. David took to Bingo calling like two little Ducks, quack, quack on Friday evening. Saturday morning the Ladies had a very successful Craft morning making Christmas Baubles. My attempt at knitting was somewhat less so but it’s a work in progress. With Mary’s

help I’ll get there. The gentlemen enjoyed games of RummiKub. The weather holding, some explored the shops, walked or enjoyed a pint in the Town. Craic as always being mighty. Our Saturday evening dancing to our guest artist and some lucky winners in the Raffle went by all too quickly. Coffee Morning on Sunday was at the earlier time of 10am as some wanted to attend the Remembrance Service held at the Cenotaph. At the going down of the Sun, we will remember them. To have our tomorrow they gave up their day. Congratulations to S & B Carey on their new motorhome. Good wishes to R. McEwan who is going for Knee Replacement.

Our rally at Stone Cricket Club began with some complications due to the new parking arrangements. Following the installation of a low fence on the edge of the grass it was difficult to park the longer vans as they couldn't reverse up to the grass with out obstructing the roadway. A limit of 20 vans had been agreed and these were soon filled. On arrival there were further obstacles to parking limiting numbers even more. Fortunately, on Friday there were last minute cancellations. The 17 vans who attended enjoyed the proximity to town for shops, pubs, cafes and the farmers market. Many used the small bar on Friday evening. The town was quite busy on Saturday and many members were browsing the various market stalls. Some explored walks along the canal. In the evening we could use the main bar and were able to play bingo and spend time chatting and relaxing. On Sunday a coffee morning was held on the field so Linda could pass on the notices about forth coming rallies. Thank you to everyone for cooperating with parking and coming to enjoy the rally.

Our AGM at Cockshutt Millennium Hall was cancelled at the last minute due to the condition of the ground. Mike had contacted the venue the week before and the day before to be told the ground was fine. Mike's van became stuck on Friday morning. Cockshutt is in a mobile phone black spot making communication difficult so letting people know about anything was impossible. Fortunately we were able to contact Brymbo Sports and Social Club as an alterative venue for the rally. Head Office cancelled AGM because of the late change of venue. Many travelled on the 20 miles to Brymbo for the night as there was another event on requiring the car park. Those who stayed had a free night for their troubles. Many thanks to everyone who pulled together to help.

On a much brighter note the Halloween Rally at Wistanstow was a "HOWLING SUCCESS". Our hosts were Darren and Shirley. There was bingo on Friday evening with a good selection of winners. No one person won too much. Shirley then organised three couples to take part a dress the "mummy" competition, using toilet rolls. The winners were judged by Darren's clap-o-meter on his phone. Our new members Tim and Dawn Day took the prize.

On Saturday the site was quiet as most took the bus

into Ludlow in search of bargains on the market. In the evening there was a gripping final in the curling. It had been an evening of mixed fortunes for the different teams in the early rounds. Congratulations to Ian, Maria, Paula and Martin the winning team. The fancy dress was well supported and congratulations to Paula and George. Well done to everyone who took part. A big thank you to Shirley and her helpers who laid on a magnificent buffet, sandwiches, pizza, nibbles, cake and much more. Thank you to all for making it a most enjoyable rally.

SCOTTISH

Our AGM rally was held from18th till 20th October at the Scottish Vintage Bus Museum , Lathalmond near Dunfermline. Sixteen Scottish vans attended with one van turning up 24 hours early, fortunately they were allowed to stay the night. We had the use of the hall for our social events.

On Friday night we had a social evening with members enjoying a chat and a few drinks. This resulted in the Rally Officer having to assisted back to his van by two lady members. Unfortunately another lady stumbled over a pothole resulting in a overnight stay in hospital.

A coffee morning was held on Saturday morning, with one of Keith's quizzes in the evening. Twenty Seven members attended the AGM on Sunday morning which saw a strong committee elected. On Sunday evening after a four part riddle quiz which left us all scratching our heads, we emerged from the hall to find storm Ashley had arrived which left the vans rocking most of the night. SEVERN VALLEY

Our Monsters Ball rally held at Norton Village Hall on the weekend starting 25th October was a great success. This was our first time at this venue and all thought it was a great location with bus stops outside the hall for journeys to Gloucester and Tewkesbury every 30 minutes. Only 20 vans attended, 17 from SV, 2 from Avon and 1 from SWW.

Despite contacting everyone attending that rally start was 4pm and not to attend until 4pm a number of vans turned up early causing chaos with parents trying to leave hall car park after picking up children from school next door to motorhomes blocking driveways and exits on main road. We would remind all members that start times are for everyone and are put in place for the safety of all.

We had bingo and games on the Friday night, Saturday

night we had a ploughman’s and a great singer Steve K who was enjoying himself so much he wanted to carry on all night. Many thanks to John,Pat, Steve, and Jan who decorated the hall, Jan Mick who helped fill in the gaps and Andrea who did the catering.

Upcoming Rallies: 29th December 4 nights 3 nights professional entertainment and buffet New Years Eve. Spaces going fast 55 out of 75 already booked £80 for 4 nights or 1-3 nights £24 pupn.

S&W WALES

Hi everyone, at last we had some dry weather, but I am now very clear as to what ‘mizzle’ is: the cloud has been so low that it has been misty almost drizzling for two weeks now. I suppose we are never satisfied with whatever the weather is! At least it has not been cold yet.

11th-13th October – Sennybridge Primary School

We returned to rally at this primary school, where our hosts, Sue and Keith Howard with Betty and Glyn welcomed 18 vans. The weather was kind for the weekend and some took the opportunity to catch the bus to Brecon or enjoy the local eateries. We had the use of the school canteen to meet and there was a quiz, which was won by ‘The Usual Suspects’, with Bingo and background music supplied by Keith.

1st-3rd November – Ysgol Gymraeg Caerfilli. This was our AGM rally with our hosts Sue & Keith Howard, Barrie Lewis and Peter Thomas, who parked up 30 vans. With the Caerphilly town centre conveniently close, many took the bus or walked to town for a little retail therapy or a meal. The AGM saw radical changes to the committee with special thanks and presentations given to our retiring Chair, Betty Bishop, and retiring Treasurer, Glyn Evans. Everyone was very appreciative of their years of service to the club. We welcomed our new chair, Sue Howard, Treasurer, May Clayton and secretary, Heulwen Hewitt with their supporting committee.

S&W Wales Group

The Trevor Miles Trophy for outstanding contribution to the club was made to Betty and Glyn. Everyone was delighted to hear that we have a new Webmaster, Mark Clayton, who needs everyone to ensure that he has their mobile numbers so that he can inform of any rally changes quickly. Please contact him on 07359661077 with your details.

The rally officer, Keith Howard, revealed the 2025 Rally Programme with a good mix of venues. The evening started with our ‘coffee morning’, then a substantial buffet followed by excellent entertainment by Emma. Emma entertained us last year and returned by popular demand, and we were not disappointed. With her lovely voice and wide repertoire it was a ‘banging’ evening.

On a sad note, we were shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Carol Hamilton after a very short illness. Carol had served on the committee and was a willing pair of hands, always with a smile. She will be missed and we send our love and sympathy to her husband, Howard and family, and wish him well.

The Rally Officer reminded everyone that the Christmas Party would involve a buffet and a four-piece group; a deposit needed when booking. The New Year Party’s entertainment is a Tribute Act; booking needed due to limited parking places – contact the Rally Officer.

Upcoming rallies: 13th-15th December – Tycroes RFC, SA18 3NY – Christmas Party rally – starts 12noon – Buffet and entertainment, BOOKABLE with the Rally Officer– deposit of £10 per person to the Treasurer. 29th Dec – 2nd January – Princess Gwenllian Centre, Kidwelly SA17 4UL – starts 12noon – New Year Celebration –entertainment is a Tribute Act – bookable with the Rally Officer due to limited space. 27th Feb – 2nd March –St.Richard Gwyn Catholic School, Barry, CF63 1BL – starts 12 noon.

SUSSEX

Season’s greetings to you all.

2024 is nearly over and I hope that the coming New Year brings you health and happiness, as you continue to enjoy travels in your motorhome, both near and far.

Many thanks to those who joined us at the October rally which included yet another successful AGM, seeing the returning committee once again agreeing to continue for another year. There were 21 vans, with some day visitors. The only changes were in roles, with Marilyn as the new Vice Chairperson and Mick Boyce as Rally Officer. Kim Remnant has been our President for several years and is now succeeded by Carole Bennett. Many thanks, Kim!

I am sure that you will give the committee your support in the coming year, with a big Thank You for their past endeavours. Their sterling achievements have made huge contributions to all our enjoyment and the continued success of our group. The Participation Award was passed on to ME! (A shock but gratefully received.)

We welcomed a new member, Christine T, for her first

Sussex rally, who included wins at Card Bingo and the Raffle to compound her introduction to the group. We also had visitors from Kent, Essex, East Wessex and Chiltern to add to the happy throng. Clive, Jo and Carol Seymour fed us in style with a tasty Ploughman’s so that we had enough energy to dance away to Malc de Reding Saturday evening.

‘Guess the Number of Conkers’ was won by John Mears who made a generous extra donation from his winnings to our chosen charity, Kent, Sussex and Surrey Air Ambulance, which continues to be supported by us.

Upcoming rallies: The annual Christmas rally, Friday 13th to Sunday 15th, December, start time 5.00pm Willingdon Community School, Broad Road, Eastbourne, BN20 8QX, hosted by Sussex Committee. No booking required. Cost per van for the weekend £35, £30 for singles. As well as the usual card bingo, Xmas jumper competition, craft activities and raffle, we will have DJ Tom, Bring and Share refreshments (American Supper) and a Table Top Sale (£1 donation to charity) on the Saturday. Bring food to share and items to sell.

Sussex New Year Party Rally, Monday 30th December to Thursday 2nd January, start time 2pm, St Richard’s College, Ashdown Road, Bexhill on Sea, TN40 1SF, hosted by Sussex Committee. The theme will be 60’s/70’s music so get out your trendy glad-rags as there will be a prize for the most outstanding (or is that bizarre?) outfit. New Year’s Day will be a quiet time of reflection. Only kidding, Mary is organising her rendition of ‘Would I Lie to You’ in addition to card bingo. Bookings to be made in advance to our treasurer Mary (tel. no 07717 790271) with a deposit of £20 required, total cost £63 (£60 for singles).

Members from ALL groups are welcome, with the added bonus of inclusion in our Loyalty Scheme, which rewards attendance of 6 rallies to a voucher of £10 to be offset against future Sussex meets (details and rules on our website). This scheme, now in its 3rd year, has seen 35 vouchers given out, our way of thanking you for joining us at Sussex and hopefully encouraging attendance!

Please check our Facebook page and the MCC website (many thanks, Ian S for your IT skills as WebMaster) for more details and any changes. Or contact any committee member. And don’t forget, the group is for YOUR enjoyment. Make sure you join in and offer your help and support where possible, by assisting, hosting or just by being there (always appreciated), either with ideas or practical issues. Merry Christmas, Jo.

SWP

I can’t believe it is almost the end of the year by the time you read this and all the plans for Christmas are in full swing. There is one October rally to report on and our November rally will take place before this issue. Please see the report below from our Rally Host and elected chairperson, Linda Chudley. Can I just say the prize goes to Tony Razzell for the furthest travelled, he flew from Croatia to attend our AGM, that is dedication to our club.

Woodlands Leisure Park, Dartmouth Devon 1015th October 2024. This year we held our AGM rally at Woodlands leisure park and members joined us for minimum 2 nights stay in this 5 night rally. We had a really good turnout of 34 vans in total – 3 Avon, 3 West Country, 2 NW Midlands and 26 SWP.

On Friday evening we got together for a meal in the diner at the site. Our AGM followed and went smoothly. We had two Committee members step down this year and luckily two new members were voted on to help take things forward.

On Saturday people took the bus to Dartmouth or Totnes (some went further afield), others enjoyed the leisure park at Woodlands. There is nothing funnier than watching older people playing like younger people, enjoying toboggan runs and flume rides. In the evening we got together and the site had organised a disco for us so more exercise dancing round the handbags. Sunday morning we had our usual get together with coffee, biscuits and chocolates, then some members enjoyed a Sunday roast in the local pub, whilst others went out to play again. Linda & Mike. All that is left for me to say is the SWP Committee wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Upcoming Rallies: December 30-2 January = 3 nights Trevarrian New Year Rally. TR8 4AQ Incl EHU. February (TBA) 3 nights Trevarrian Holiday Park, Mawgan Porth, Newquay. TR8 4AQ. inc EHU.

WEST COUNTRY

It's hard to think we have nearly reached the end of the year without having a real summer. Hopefully you have all got out and enjoyed being in your vans despite the weather.

As I said last month the AGM is over for another year, fortunately despite the poor attendance we were able to form a committee going forwards. For those that did attend the weather was kind and the sun shone enabling people to get out and about and even sit out for short periods over a coffee. The members who did attend raised some valid points at the members meeting as well as agreeing with both the outgoing and incoming committee that the high number of absent people who have booked and then not bothered to attend or even have the curtesy to let the rally officers know they were not coming could not continue into a new rallying year. The new committee

have now put in place new procedures for the start of the new season which will be in West Country members book and on the website in the new year.

Many thanks must go to Jim and Jenny Ten-Bokkel for their help and dedication in keeping the club and committee going for the last few years. We hope that by standing down you will be able to get and enjoy doing all the things that you have on your wish list.

I would just like to wish all members a Happy Christmas and peaceful New Year and look forward to seeing many of you next year with hopefully, fingers crossed some sun.

WEST WESSEX

A total of 19 vans attended the rally at South Lytchett Manor. The weather was very kind to us and most took advantage of the bus stop outside the site gate, going to Wareham, Swanage and Poole. One couple was adventurous, catching the bus to Wareham and then train to Weymouth. Unfortunately the return train was cancelled and they had to bus back. Many members also enjoyed a coffee and breakfast/ lunch in the Cowshed Cafe at the Craft Centre adjacent to the site.

As October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, on Sunday afternoon we had a get together with some delicious homemade cake for donations. A big thank you to all who donated; Judy was very pleased that the amount raised was over £100. Many Thanks to Sue and Chum for hosting and providing this report.

Our 4 night Halloween Rally and AGM at Devizes FC saw 47 motorhomes arrive from 7 groups. The weather was kind and most members walked or caught the bus into town, enjoying a meal, browsing the shops or strolling along the canal path during the weekend. In the evenings there were quizzes, bingo, tombola, games and a raffle

in the Clubhouse. There was a Ploughman’s Supper on one evening and a fancy dress disco on another with some amazing costumes and table decorations adding to the fun. At the AGM, on Sunday, the committee was unanimously re-elected and the business discussed. The rally ended on Monday morning with lots of compliments and thanks to the hosts, Dawn and Ali.

Upcoming Rallies: New year Celebrations will be at St Michael’s Middle School, Colehill, Wimborne BH21 7AB on 29th December - 2nd January. Hosts Andy and Gill. There will be excellent food included on 30th, New Year’s Eve and New Years Day, as usual. There will be quizzes, bingo, dancing, fun and games all weekend and of course, music provided by the ENIGMA ROAD SHOW. Cost £80 per couple/£65 single. Bookable with Gill on 07746058606. All rallies start at 12 noon. Please do not arrive early. See WW website for full details and directions to all rallies.

YORKSHIRE

We held our only October rally at the Wetherby Racecourse which included the 2024 AGM. wOn the Friday we welcomed 38 vans of which 33 came from Yorkshire with the remaining 5 from Northern Counties, most of the afternoon was spent booking in and parking up.

Once it had calmed down the retiring committee held a meeting to discuss the procedure for the following mornings AGM. Others went on their way, either going for walks, catching the bus into Wetherby or just relaxing in their mororhomes. The evening in the clubhouse was spent playing Bingo, Dave Wright doing a superb job calling numbers. Following on from bingo we held a race night, rather poetic considering we were at a racecourse, this went down extremely well. We were well entertained by

our resident DJ Mark, also was held the proverbial quizzes. To close the evening karaoke was introduced, some were deemed to be OK some not so.

Saturday morning we held a tea/coffee morning immediately prior to the AGM. The new committee were unanimously accepted, there is a fair mixture of new and ex committee members, unlike last year when there were none forthcoming, therefore requiring an EGM. Big thanks to the outgoing committee and welcome to the new one.

In the afternoon we received a visit from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Jo gave a demonstration on performing CPR and gave a talk on what takes place behind the scenes when a 999 call is made to the service, a few actually took part in performing CPR

The evening we were entertained by a last minute stand in called “Tori”, due to the person being booked having her car hit in an RTA. She did quite well and wasn't put off by her guitar losing two strings during her performance. We also had a buffet prior to the entertainment and the bonus ball of which the winner received £50. Our raffle then took place with all proceeds going to the MND charity in which our 2024-2025 Chairperson Paul Green is very active, the monies raised came to £181. (see picture with Sue Bolton and Chris Stephens presenting the monies raised to Paul Green)

Sunday we held a coffee/tea morning and everyone then packed up and made their way home or to places further afield.

8 – 10 November Skipton Auction Mart. Our rally in Skipton turned out to be a belter. Malcolm and Carol stepped in as hosts last minute, due to the sudden illness of our rally officer, who we wish a speedy recovery. We had a great attendance of 40 vans; 19 Yorkshire (4 first timers), 8 Lancashire (2 first timers), 7 N Counties, 4 E Midlands,(2 first timers) 1 NW Mids & N Wales (first timer), and 1 N Ireland (first timer). The weather stayed fine for us although the solid cloud remained, keeping the sun away. Friday nights entertainment was held in the auction arena, our Chairperson Paul welcomed everyone and then the fun began. Although no sales took place, lots of money changed hands to the Bingo winners!

Carol handed out quiz sheets to test our grey cells and even did a third one as we all enjoyed them so much. On Saturday the weather stayed fine which enabled ralliers to wander down into town to explore, browse the shops and market and partake of food and drink in one of the many hostelries in town. Saturday night Paul again welcomed everyone and issued rally plaques to the first timers to a Yorkshire rally. The night saw more revelry in the auction ring with bingo and quizzes and catching up with friends. A great time was had by all.

29 Nov – 1 Dec Drax. Unfortunately this rally had to be cancelled due to an admin error at the venue and there wasn’t enough space to accommodate us.

Upcoming Rallies: 6 – 8 December, Christmas party, Driffield Showground, YO25 9DN. 28 Dec – 2 Jan, New Year party, Malton & Norton RUFC (Bookable) YO17 7EY

OF THE CANTABRIA winter touring special part 2

Frances and Michael Howorth continue their tour of northern Spain and now, having visited the Basque Country and La Rioja they reach Cantabria

The mountain village of Potes in Cantabria
When you wake in the morning the chances are, if you have parked in the countryside, that the first thing you will hear are cowbells.

It could be rather corny to suggest that in Cantabria, the hills are alive with the sound of music, but – incredibly – it is true. The hills and mountains of Cantabria in northern Spain are so reminiscent of those in Austria and Switzerland that that you really do expect Julie Andrews and a horde of kids to be in the middle of the road as you drive your motorcaravan through them. When you wake in the morning the chances are, if you have parked in the countryside, that the first thing you will hear are cowbells. Having enjoyed ourselves in La Rioja and the Basque Country (see last month’s edition), we arrived in Cantabria to make our first stop at the Parque de Cabárceno. This incredible Nature Park is nothing short of a modern-day environmental-miracle success story.

In what was once a filthy, open pit, mined for its iron ore deposits, environmentalists have created a 750-hectare safari park in which more than a hundred different species live in in the closest thing they can to their natural habitat. Drive your motorcaravan into the park in the early part of the morning and come prepared to spend the day there. Watch elephants, lions and tigers amongst many others, living and playing in a cage-free environment. Park the van and walk to enclosures and viewing platforms to get close up views of the animals as they go about their daily business. Watch at feeding times, walk the nature trails or catch one of several arial gondolas suspended from cables that glide over the top of the park to give an overall view. Plan your

Cabárceno Park, Cantabria

lunch around demonstrations and lectures so that you do not miss anything. We found the raptor demonstration to be so fascinating that we will even forgive the presenter’s anti-British slurs made during his Spanish (only) commentary!

There is another reason why

close by the elephant enclosure, is a very large flat car park reserved for campervans and motorhomes. Wonderfully quiet at night it makes a great place to spend the night. There are no facilities, but water waste disposal and a launderette are available in the nearby town of Lierganes if required.

From Cabárceno we drove to Selaya. We were keen to try two sweet dishes made here using traditional recipes closely guarded by families producing them. The secret behind Sobao Pasiego (a local sponge cake) lies in the quality of the butter, and the basic ingredient of the Quesada (a sort of cheesecake) is

than from El Andral, the farm run by Jose Angel and his five brothers. While one brother looks after the herd, the others are hard at work in the kitchen producing the two delicacies. We called into their farm shop to buy some and were treated to a tour of the factory where Jose Angel proudly showed us the production process.

Milk of this quality is much in demand and any surplus is quickly snapped up by La Lleldira,

Safe nights Ireland (SNI) is a club for people who love life on the open road but long for the security of their home. We provide overnight parking for RV Motorhomes throughout the country.

a traditional cheesemaking fermentaría run by Sara Hart and her husband Aitor. Set up two years ago the couple now make four different cheeses and welcome those in motorcaravans to prebook a stop-off and enjoy a tutored tasting. The traditionally made cheeses are named after the local farmers who sell them raw organic milk and are each very different. It is not easy to walk away without buying a piece of your favourite because you know

that, apart from the markets locally, you are unlikely to see this cheese again. La Lleldira is somewhat isolated in the hills and relies on solar power for electricity and wood burning stoves for heat but that simply adds to the character of the fermentaría. Nearby, in the village of La Concha, a few kilometres from San Roque de Riomiera the restaurant known simply as La Vieja Escuela (The Old School House) serves Cocido Lebaniego a delicious and hearty mountain stew.

Consider taking a detour to Bárcena Mayor, a village nestled in the mountains, said to be the oldest town in Cantabria. Declared a

historic-artistic site in 1979 because of its state of preservation, the village has retained its medieval character and rustic appearance. Only residents may drive motor vehicles through the village, so this means motorcaravanners must park in the special carparks on the outskirts of the village and walk in. As one of the most visited towns in the Cantabrian interior, it can become crowded and its best to arrive early, enjoy a walk around the village and then either stay over for a rural cuisine lunch of cocido montañés, or get out of town before the coaches arrive.

We did just that and drove a winding road up the mountain to the hamlet of Tojo. Here in a car park capable of accommodating up to three vans, we spent the night choosing to eat dinner locally, the same wonderful foods offered in Barcena Mayor for a mere fraction of the tourist priced lunch. Had the weather been a little kinder we could have made good use of the brickbuilt BBQ purposely placed there by locals for van users like us to use.

The attractive town of Potes straddles the river Deva and is another village best approached on foot after you have parked your van in one of the several large carparks on the outskirts of town. If you drive to town along the N621 from the north, do factor in an extra hour of drive time. The route is extraordinary but is the subject of long-term road rebuilding project with lengthy stops at a series of traffic lights. This is actually a good thing, as it allows drivers the chance to enjoy the scenery, because otherwise the road affords very few places to pull off or stop.

Besides the excellent bread shop, there were two other reasons for us to visit Potes. The first was to sample Orujo a local grappa made from the leftovers after making wine. The most congenial place to do that is at Compañía Lebaniega de vinos y licores but perhaps better known by their trademark, Picos de Cabariezo. Here the entrepreneurial owners offer a completely free tour of their winery and distillery that even includes a generous tasting at

the end of the 45-minute tour. Their hope is that you will buy from their well-stocked shop at the end of the tour. There strategy worked well on us! The second reason was to visit The Monastery of Santo Toribio, where you can see what the monks insist is the largest fragment of the Holy Cross known to exist.

Located in the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park the Telerifico de Fuente De is a world-famous cable car ride that transports tourists through 1,823m of altitude in just 4 minutes, at a speed of ten metres a second. From the upper station the view across the landscape is one of immense beauty to the point of being overwhelming. It is well worth the trip but if you are planning to ride the cable car be sure to get there

early, or book in advance. But only do that if you know the weather is going to be good, there is no point going up in thick fog and it could be uncomfortable in high winds. We chose to walk down the mountain rather than take the return gondola ride. Once we got back to our van, we discovered it took us four hours to descend on foot what had taken us four minutes to climb. That said, the changing scenery was incredible and for us the trekking down was well worth the effort.

The caves of El Soplao are certainly worth adding to a touring itinerary for those travelling Cantabria. The caves get their name from slang used by miners who once worked the mineral deposits here. "a soplao" is a strong current of fresh air that is created when a mining tunnel

by huge sculptures that stand in front of the entrance. Today visitors can follow guided tours through six of the galleries open to the public,

(there are many more that are not). Walking through the tunnels we were amazed by the formations such as helictites, stalactites, stalagmites and curtains of calcite, sometimes translucent, that hang from the ceilings. Some of which began to form during the Cretaceous period 240 million years ago.

If caves are your thing, then you simply must visit more at Altamira. These caves, however, are of interest for a completely different reason. And while again their discovery was accidental, the contents of the caves could not be more different. Instead of geological formations here at Altamira, the focus is on graffiti! Discovered in 1879 by Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola and his daughter María, the ceilings of the original cave were covered in highly decorative reproductions of bison, horses, hinds, goats, and numerous symbols, the oldest of which date

back some 30,000 years and the most recent, the famous polychrome paintings, some 15,000 years. The caves were opened to the public in 1917 and quickly became one of the most visited destinations in Spain and a tourist icon of Cantabria.

But it was that popularity that threatened to destroy them and the invaluable historical record they contained. So, a replica was created, and it is this replica that is on display now at the Altamira Museum. Do not let the word replica put you off visiting, because if it did, you would truly miss out on a fascinating experience. The Altamira National Museum was inaugurated in 2001 and is a life-size reproduction of the famous Hall of the Polychrome Paintings. Precision produced using laser measurement, and numeric control techniques, it authentically reproduces, to the exact millimetre, the rocks and the prehistoric drawings. It allows visitors to appreciate how the cave was when groups of hunter-gatherers lived in it and began to daub the walls by hand, using oxides, earth, fats, and handcrafted brushes.

In San Vincente de Barquerra, art of a very different kind is celebrated. El Capricho de Gaudí is an architectural wonder. Built on the outskirts of Comillas, in what was then the middle of the countryside, El Capricho is one of the many marvels created by the architect Antoni Gaudi. Built in 1883–1885 for his wealthy patron Máximo Díaz de Quijano, it was designed for use as a summertime get away from the city. It is one of the few buildings outside Catalonia associated with

the architect who is better known for his designs of Park Güell, Casa Milá, and Casa Batlló, along with Sagrada Família in Barcelona.

Among his many attributes Máximo Díaz de Quijano was an accomplished and talented musician and Gaudí has incorporated his clients love of music into the design of the house and its highly decorated, minaret like, tower. Sadly, Máximo never truly enjoyed his newly created masterpiece. He died inside a year of moving in with some reports saying that event took place on his first week of full occupation.

The house, and its tiny garden, fell into disrepair after the Spanish Civil War. Despite it being declared a National Monument in 1969 it was left in partial ruin until 1977, when the last descendant of the López-Díaz de Quijano family sold the property. It was restored and turned first into a restaurant in 1988

for which it was clearly unsuited and then a private dwelling. Finally, in 2009, the building became a privately owned museum. Today it is possible to take tours in both Spanish and English and the well-informed guides do a really good job of pointing out and explaining of the many features you would otherwise miss without them.

Among the town’s other architectural heritage buildings are Puebla Alta, designated as a HistoricArtistic Ensemble, the 14th-century castle and the Gothic church of Santa María de los Ángeles. The

town of San Vicente de la Barquera lies on the outskirts of the Oyambre Nature Reserve and is renowned harbour for a fleet fishing vessels. There is a pleasing variety of beaches to choose from, each with a different attribute. El Merón boasts a large stretch of sand while Gerra and Santillán are spread out beneath rugged cliffs. Finally, El Sable is a little beach alongside the estuary of the river San Vicente.

Foodies that we are, we found plenty of opportunity to sample local delicacies including Morcilla, a Spanish blood sausage, and Chorizo, and there were plenty of

opportunities to cook them outside on our grill. Camping and grilling seem to be constant companions when it comes to the Spanish countryside. Throughout our two-week stay in northern Spain we never once stayed in a formal motorcaravan park preferring to use the Aires and dedicated ‘autocaravana’ parking spots. Some of the Aires are funded by the local councils or communities while others, like La Picota in Piñeres are private and are more like a certified location (CL).

We particularly liked the Aire at La Picota for the walking

opportunities it offered and €8 a night was, we thought, a stunning deal. One of the walks we enjoyed was to the foot of the valley where four fabulous waterfalls were a delight to photograph while other walks, took us high into the hills to stunning viewpoints..

Finally, and perhaps all too soon, it was time to drive into Santander, stopping only to visit the Palcio de la Magdalena and La Caseta de Bombas, before catching a lift home onboard the Brittany Ferries vessel Salamanca. The two-day voyage back to Portsmouth gave us time to reflect and relax after our adventures and plan our next visit to the hills of Cantabria.

Frances and Michael Howorth were the guests of Brittany Ferries and sailed outward bound from Portsmouth to Bilbao in the ferry Gallicia returning from Santander to Portsmouth on board the Salamanca.

Members who are fans of the ‘blue oval’ will be pleased with the latest resurgence in popularity of the brand among motorcaravan converters. Transits big and notso-big are eating away at the SEVEL’s (Ducato/Boxer/Relay) dominant market share. Longer term members might remember that Ford were once the leading manufacture in supplying base vehicles for motorcaravans. Next year it will be Ford Transit's 60th birthday and we intend producing an in-depth feature celebrating the fact. For now, and as an ‘appetiser’, a pictorial wander down Memory Lane. Above is part of a doublepage advertisement featured for several months in 1971 editions of

the Club magazine. Retailer Godfrey Davis was the advertiser. Left to right [1] Domobile Elba on Ford Escort. Then the Transits: [2] Dormobile Enterprise; [3] CI Motorhomes Landliner; [4] CI Motorhomes Wayfarer; [5] Canterbury Savannah; [6] Dormobile Explorer, and finally another Escort…[7] Canterbury Siesta.

Next are two from a Club mag published at the other end of the decade (1979). Pictured are a coachbuilt CI Motorhome [8] and an Auto-Sleeper [9], the latter with their signature solid-sided elevating roof.

A LEGEND SIGNS-OFF

DJ Johnny Walker BEM [10] is signing-off after a lifetime of keeping motorcaravanners entertained via the engaging medium of radio and latterly including podcasts as well. The author fondly remembers listening to Johnny whilst motorcaravanning on the Essex coast back when Johnny was a ‘pirate’ aboard different ships broadcasting Swinging Radio England and Radio Caroline. Following those early broadcasts, Johnny has enjoyed a long and distinguished career, mostly working for the BBC on Radios 1 & 2 but also ‘over the pond’ working ‘stateside’ on Radio KSAN and WHFS. Recently, he owned and enjoyed an Auto-Trail motorhome…though this wasn’t his first foray into motorcaravanning by any means. Motor Caravanner first carried a report on the (then) ‘flare-trousered platter-spinner’ back in 1973 when he bought a

Bedford CF Auto-Sleeper [11]. Johnny is on the right of the photo and the other gent is Mr M Grant, at the time Turners of Dulwich sales’ manager. Whilst working in America, a 33’ long King’s Highway RV was the DJ’s choice of mobile accommodation. [12 shows a 29 ft version]. If the marque rings a bell but can’t be placed, a Kings Highway RV appeared in quite a few episodes of the hit TV series C.H.I.P.S. [13] about the exploits of members of the California Highway

Motorcycle Patrol…enjoyed by many Blighty-based viewers back in the day. Thank-you Johnny for all the wonderful music and chat over many decades.
