he National Rally is now over and I hope those who attended enjoyed the weekend. Congratulations to all CoM members who stood for re-election at the AGM, all of whom were voted back in – and a special welcome to Steve Wynn who stood for election for the first time and was successfully voted in to serve on CoM. Welcome aboard Steve! The results of the questions raised re caravans were reported in last month’s issue. And I stated that CoM’s decision would be announced at the AGM. I have to apologise to all members that this item was omitted but the decision, following the results of the poll, is that there will be no changes to the current regulations on membership with caravans, ie. a member who changes to a caravan without a lapse in their membership may retain membership. Recruiting is still going well at the shows, thanks to the team manning the stand and the marshals team for organising the parking. Don’t forget if you book for a show to put you wish to park with the MCC. Groups are meeting at their regular rallies, check with the websites or Facebook if booking is required. If it is your first time with a group let your hosts know and I am sure you will be made welcome.

OBITUARIES ALEC GAMBLE Alec passed away at the Thornwood House Care Home, East Dereham, Norfolk on Tuesday 24th May 2022 aged 85 years. A long time member of the Anglia Group, spanning in the region of 40 years. A big gentle man, Alec reluctantly gave up his motorhome shortly after his beloved wife Janet passed away a few years ago. He was always appreciative of the hard work of the Committee and members in providing good quality and enjoyable rallies not only in Anglia but over the country. Over his latter years of motor caravanning I am sure he will be fondly remembered as ‘The Newspaper Delivery Man’, cycling off site to the nearest newsagent and delivering papers to members who could enjoy their breakfasts in their vans, reading the daily news. Our thoughts go out to his two daughters and their respective families at this time of loss. Derek Clarke, Anglia Secretary PAUL GOULDING It’s with sadness that we have to announce the passing of a dear friend and long standing member Paul Goulding, from the Essex Group who passed away on 7th June 2022 we would like to send our condolences to Val and his family and were thinking of them at this sad time. Paul & Val organised overseas trips which many Group members attended. Bob Thorne, Essex Group Chairman

Campsite review Club member Michelle Spencer recently stayed at the Aird Donald Caravan Park near Stranrar, Scotland: “Just thought I would inform you of this ideal site for the club, the owners, Stuart Cassie and his wife keep it immaculate and they are nice people too! We stayed here for one night as we were heading north. There were

only four others on this large site, when I spoke to Stuart, he said he’s 50% down on his figures. The site offers a large tarmacked area, a hard standing area plus a grass area and a lovely camping field. They have picnic tables scattered around and more then

enough space for a gazebo – and they will take rallies. Facilities include toilets, showers, laundry, electric hook-up and is only a mile from Stranrar.” Contact details Email: enquiries@aird-donald.co.uk. M

otorhomes are our DNA is a phrase often used by AutoTrail to reflect the company’s dedication to the design and production of this type of leisure vehicle. However, this wasn’t always the case. Hint: think carefully about the name ‘AutoTrail’ and you will be unsurprised to learn that they started off at their Stallingborough premises [1] as repairers and service engineers 1

16 MOTOR CARAVANNER July 2022

for touring caravans, later adding the design and build of exhibition trailers. Hence the name…’AutoTrail’. Following a tour of America in an RV, proprietors Bill Boasman and Barry Holmes decided to coachbuild a luxury RV…but of a size more suitable for our roads. Prototypes were built on several different pre-owned chassis and the first production Cherokee [2] rolled off the line in 1982 and was underpinned by Bedford’s formidable CF. Swivel ‘tub’ chairs

in the lounge and drop sash-style sliding windows provided an opulent RV vibe as illustrated by this 1996 Cherokee [3], based on a VW T4.

DESIGN DEVELOPS

Most popular base vehicle through the 1980’s and early 1990’s was the Bremen Mercedes (207/208 307/308). The pictured 1988 Sioux [4 & 5] was owned by the author. Interiors back then featured English Oak or European Limed

-Trail motorhomes Oak cabinetwork and velour soft furnishings. There was a huge demand for Auto-Trails, but not everyone could afford the Merc, so a parallel range was developed on the Talbot Express.

HIRE PURCHASE

‘Tempting’ Talbots included the Cheyenne [6], a new entry-level range squarely aimed at the hire fleets, in which it achieved amazing market penetration. Although the spec was um…er…’basic’

(didn’t even get any wheel trims), A-T dealers with hire fleets were continually asked by folk if they could buy one. This subsequently resulted in them being offered for sale, but with the option of the Rico pack of upgrades.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

Auto-Trail went through a stage when they would do a bespoke build on anything brought to the factory. These varied in size from the compact Peugeot 504 pick-

up to palatial rolling palaces on Mercedes lorry or coach chassis [7]. A-T also built charity support vehicles and specials for community policing [8]. These had wider habitation doors, and in common with many of their bespoke builds, were fully wheelchair accessible. They also built a few examples for undercover work, both for MI5 and CID. If we gave you any further details, we’d have to shoot you! >>

>> After a change of ownership, a brief return was made to caravans…by building luxury upmarket Vanroyce tourers [9]. Other ‘specials’ included badgeengineered offerings, firstly the left hand drive Cristal range, aimed at Europe, particularly the French. Later, the stylish low-profile Excel range [10] targeted at younger buyers in the UK.

SIX APPEAL

Early examples of the Scout and Pullman utilised galvanised and independently-sprung Al-Ko Kober

chassis extensions. Most members will be familiar with more recent tandem-axle Ducato variants such as the Chieftain, Arapaho and Commanche. However, the first Auto-Trail with ‘six appeal’ was the 1991 Seminole [11], which was also their earliest (production) model to feature a permanent double-bed at the far rear.

ALTERNATIVE UNDERPINNINGS

focus within the Trigano Group now sees Auto-Trail’s state-of-theart factory in North Lincolnshire converting high-top panel vans for most of the European-based Trigano-owned marques. Second Tribute ‘act’ was a range of Ford Transit based coachbuilts [13]. Current Auto-Trail Fords are called

BANCROFT’S BELTER Undoubtedly the Badger and Fox were game changers, but my all-time favourite Auto-Trail is the original 1999 Tracker, which unlike later Trackers was not built on the Fiat Ducato, but on a Fiat Scudo Al-Ko. It was a masterpiece of miniaturisation and really did drive like a sports car.

F-Line. Pictured [14] is a 2022 F-68. Members are probably familiar with the ‘new’ Fiat Ducato based Grande Frontier, the only ‘A’-Class range produced in volume by a British converter. It may not be widely known that earlier Grande Frontiers were based on the Mercedes Sprinter. Pictured [15] is a 2007 example.

As has already been mentioned, Auto-Trail currently converts high-top panel vans for many other marques as well as producing its own Expedition, V-Line and Adventure ranges. Their first PVCs to really gain market traction were the Fox and Badger [16] launched in 1995. Both could be specified with either a low-profile or Luton overcab high-top. The latter provided space for an additional full-size high-level foldaway longitudinal double-bed. After undertaking a full live-in test, I described the Badger as, “a van conversion that thinks it’s a coachbuilt!”

Our

friends electric There was a buzz of excitement in the Motor Caravanner office as two large boxes arrived on a dreary Monday morning – we had taken delivery of two electric bikes to review, courtesy of Rutland Cycling.

T

he first to be unpacked was the Levit Tumbi Electric Hybrid Bike followed by the Levit Chilo Aluminium Folding Electric Bike. As with all things new the temptation was to rush in but it is well worth remembering the old adage ‘less haste, more speed’ and in this case a full read of the instructions before we began was well worth it and made sure we were ‘on our bikes’ in no time. The Levit Tumbi Electric Hybrid Bike is a well-equipped model. The quality build offers a comfortable ride and the low profile frame makes mounting and dismounting much easier than many traditional bikes. The power is supplied by a Levit ST 468Wh (13Ah) battery which sits just behind the seat tube, the positioning of which, Levit claims, improves weight distribution and overall moveability. As you pull away the first thing

you notice is how quickly the bike picks up speed under electric power, allowing you to glide effortlessly along without breaking a sweat. The sturdy frame and 26” wheels offer a smooth ride and a feeling of confidence, essential when navigating traffic, wet weather or changing terrains. The control is a simple-to-use LED display with a Microshift 7 Speed drivetrain making easy work of any slopes, up or down, especially with a motor boost when needed! The Levit Chilo Aluminium Folding Electric Bike is an ideal alternative if you are looking to save storage space in your motorhome. The model easily folds away and can be carried comfortably on public transport. Despite its smaller size there is no compromise on speed with plenty of power to navigate busy traffic or urban hills. Both models are ideal for moving

around campsites or popping to nearby shops once your motorhome is parked up.

W

ith the sun shining later in the week, two of our team jumped at the chance of leaving the office for the afternoon and taking the 3 mile ride to the seaside town of Southwold – the perfect test ride – taking in roads, cycle paths and grassy banks. Both bikes made light work of the terrains, arriving at the town’s pier in no time and turning a few heads along the way. The speed reached under battery power surprising both rider and by-stander alike and offering much needed help up the hills. Worried about battery life? Our duo travelled to the town and back, making very little impact on the battery charge – the battery range allowing approximately 60-100km. The Levit Chilo was a particular >> July 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 25

favourite for it’s ‘good posture’ design. The team loved these bikes and were sad to see them go, as we eventually had to say goodbye to our new friends and return to two legs! Our verdict The Levit Tumbi Electric Bike is a fully equipped bike offering a safe, comfortable ride – the perfect all-rounder. The Levit Chilo Aluminium Folding Electric Bike is a great

option if you need an easy-to-store bike which doesn’t compromise on performance – the perfect motorhome accessory. About Levit Levit was founded on the principle that electric bikes, bicycles and everything around cycling, is the right medicine for our hectic lives. A CAMPSITE WITH A DIFFERENCE... LeoBay is quite unique as it is a campsite with fitting facilities, so if there’s that little something you need doing from replacing a bulb to a complete conversion we do it all. Our experience goes back 40 years. Our core experience is in auto electrics and vehicle security as well as vehicle diagnostics, we use factory diagnostic software to solve your problems. Trained in both vehicle and mains voltages we can also inspect and test your mains hook up too! Gas that’s no problem either! Now there’s a service that makes life simple, so next time you need help, come and stay at LeoBay, a nice cuppa on arrival, we will sort your problems while you relax on our 1st class site. There’s even a courtesy vehicle to use during your stay at LeoBay! LeoBay is a site in a million, completely built by us and independent, so all are

welcome whether you’re a club member or not. We have drawn on our 25 years as motorhomers, collating all the best bits from the many sites we have visited over the years. The pitches are all wide hardstanding, with a 10amp hook up and your own grass area to spread out on, the site sits up on a hill over looking the sea with amazing views. On site facilities include a unique summer kitchen, where everyone can chat, relax and eat under cover, there’s a barbeque and pizza oven for you to use, or sit and relax by the open fire with a bottle or two. We like to make sure you’re warm and comfortable so the shower block is heated, with two large rooms, and to top it off the gardens are just splendid. Pets are welcome; the dog walks along the shore are great, there’s plenty of wildlife to watch. So as you can see it’s well worth a visit at just £25 per night all in.

GROUP NEWS & DIARIES JULY 2022

GROUP NEWS COORDINATOR: Polly Coleman T: 01502 725841 E: groupnews@themotorcaravannersclub.co.uk Post: Motor Caravanner Magazine, Countrywide Publications, Reydon Business Park, Reydon, Suffolk, IP18 6DH. Deadline: 5th of the month for inclusion in the following month's magazine

ANGLIA We had 58 vans attend our rally at Reydon near Southwold at a new venue for us. 29 Anglia, 12 Essex, seven East Mids, five Chiltern, two Severn Valley, one Kent, one Wessex and one East Wessex. Included in the above were members of the motorcycle group who joined us for the second time this year. They ‘Rode Out’ to Aldeburgh, Leiston, Sizewell, Shingle Street and round the coast, enjoying our lovely Anglia scenery. Despite limited use of the hall 6pm-10pm, all agreed it was a good venue with a bus service outside for those who wished to go further afield. All went into town at one point, enjoying the weather and local ice creams. Others went to Lowestoft. Bingo was played on three nights by popular request, as well as music-quizzes set by Paul, Tony and Jan Watts, plus table quizzes. Each evening the urn was on. All agreed that a good time was had by all. Thanks to the stewards, Keith, Teresa, Tony, Carole, Rex and Betty. Scribe Derek. 49 vans attended our Platinum Jubilee Celebrations at Hunstanton Community Centre with visitors from several groups, including one couple from Northern Ireland en-route to the National. Tuesday evening, everyone did their own thing since we could not use the hall. On Wednesday, most went into town and explored all the happenings in the town for the Jubilee. In the evening, we had bingo, which was profitable for our Irish visitors, as well as a quiz set by Derek, followed by David Seals giving us some singing. Thursday was a free day with yet more things going on in the town and the beacon lighting ceremony at night. On Friday, our committee and helpers were busy preparing the buffet for the evening party which started at 5pm, The hall and tables had been decorated earlier by the men. What a feast was had by all followed by entertainment from

David Seals and Pat and David Hills. The giant raffle was drawn and the Dodgy Dip to round off an exceptionally good day. Saturday was again a free day, followed by entertainment from a lady vocalist Lainy King. What an artist and what a choice of music to suit all tastes. A great voice with a bubbly personality to go with it. We hope to see her again sometime in the future. Sunday was again a free day for those who were staying the night and going home on Monday. Thanks to Keith and Teresa, Tony and Carol Park, Betty and Rex Cox, Brian and Jenny Wood and to all who helped in any way, no matter how small, for a great Jubilee Rally in the Anglia tradition. Scribe Derek. Upcoming rallies: 30 June-4 July: British Sugar, Bury St. Edmund’s, IP32 7BB, start 1pm. 15-21 July: Swaffham Rugby Club, PE37 7QX, start 1pm. (Pre Norwich show rally). 29 July-4 August: Sheringham High School, NR26 8ND, start 1pm.

AVON We had 74 vans at Castle Combe on 27-29 May for the steam and vintage rally. We had four first-ever ralliers. We were blessed with good weather and everyone seemed to enjoy going round the show. We had raffle and meeting on Saturday evening as show was also on Sunday. Usual suspects got the prizes.

CHILTERN St. Peter’s Farm at North Moreton is a lovely relaxing area with two local pubs and country walks to Wallingford or Didcot. Only seven vans, but a good time was had by all. Some cycled to Didcot and walked across the fields to Wallingford while others were happy to soak up the sun and enjoy the peaceful countryside. >> July 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 29

GROUP NEWS One intrepid member walked into Didcot twice to travel on the steam train! Pub quizzes supplied by David in a cozy shelter and lots of friendly banter made this a very enjoyable long weekend. Many thanks to Jane and David. A really lovely rally at this scenic site at White Mark Farm, and as only seven vans (all Chiltern) we all socialised with our lovely hosts Steve and Marion in their shelter with friends old and new. Quizzes and raffle loved the music one Steve and attempts to sing along to find the answers. The weather over the weekend was more than kind and provided an opportunity to look at the red kites and more. Some decided to go to a local pub for a smashing Sunday lunch. Others enjoyed the offerings of arts and craft week. A relaxing time. Would have been lovely to see more members – “use it or lose it” as they say! What a brilliant time was had by all at the Chiltern 60th Anniversary Rally which we combined with the Platinum Jubilee. We had sunshine (and showers!), great food, fab entertainment and lots of fun and games. After settling in on Thursday, we were entertained by Sharon and Paul with their version of a game they copied from ‘A Question of Sport’ which involved quiz questions, balls and baskets. Friday morning there was a boules competition which was won by Bill and Dave (who assured us he’d never played before!) In the afternoon, there was a wonderful Mini Fete. The main attraction was the tombola - the queue was half way round the field - and thanks go to all those members who contributed to the prizes. There were lots of other games which kept ralliers entertained all afternoon and luckily the rain held off. In the evening we danced the night away to Terry Rydell. Saturday was the day for our Street

Chiltern group: Kate presenting the Chairman with the group’s 60th Anniversary plaque and the new President, Del Gosling

Party with lots of lovely food provided by ‘A Bit Of A Do’. The highlights were the inauguration of our President, Del Gosling, who was joined at the party by his two daughters and their husbands - and the presentation of our 60th plaque by the Club’s Chairman, Kate Jones. The evening saw the dance floor full again. This time the music was provided by Leon with his disco and great light show. Thanks to everyone who attended to make this a rally to remember. Upcoming rallies: 1-3 July: Friars Court, Radcot, OX18 2SX, bookable. 8-10 July: Cheney Manor House, Banbury, OX15 0UA. 14-18 July: Bagmere Barn, Charney Bassett, OX12 0HD. 29-31 July: Bridge Meadow, Cropredy, OX17 1PQ. 5-7 August: Aylesbury Rugby Club, Weston Turville, HP22 5RN. 19-21 August: Fir Tree Campsite, Warmington, OX17 1JL. 25-29 August: British Sugar Sports & Social Club, Bury St Edmunds, IP32 7BB, bookable.

EAST MIDLANDS Our Jubilee Rally at Arena UK, July 22nd to 25th 2023 is bookable and the booking form is available at our rallies and on our website under Gallery tab. Our weekend away with the MCC at Tattershall: Being relative newbies to the Motor Caravaners Club and attending our first meet-up at Spalding, I volunteered both myself and Kev to be stewards at the Tattershall meet-up. After volunteering we were a little apprehensive, having never done anything like this before, but after speaking to Peter and Debbie (the other couple who had volunteered to be stewards) we were soon put at ease. I was asked to contact a lady called Holly to arrange a time to collect the keys to the Village Hall, only to be told that the Hall had been double booked. After a few phone calls the matter was resolved. Peter and Debbie are a lovely couple, they made Kev and I feel at ease, giving us lots of help and making us feel part of the MCC family. After putting up posters and the MCC flag it wasn’t long before the first MCC member arrived. By teatime, nineteen vans had arrived, we were hoping for twenty, but it was not to be. Come seven o’clock, it was time for the evening’s fun and entertainment to begin. This started off with a game of bingo and was then followed by a card game called Higher or Lower. The following morning we were blessed with blue skies and warm sunshine. After coffee morning in the village hall, and with Tattershall Castle being close by, many members took the opportunity to pay a visit to the castle. Kev and I took the chance to relax in the warm sunshine and continue with our stewarding duties. Seven o’clock bought another evening of fun and laughter. This time the highlights of the evening were the raffle (with lots of lovely prizes being offered), followed by a general knowledge quiz organised by Peter. GROUP NEWS Sunday morning’s coffee morning had to be cancelled due to the hall being booked for an antique fair, but this did not spoil what was a brilliant weekend. Kev and Kate. Queen’s Jubilee Rally, Wainfleet: 26 vans arrived in glorious sunshine, three of which were East Midlands first timers. Once parked members decorated their vans with red, white and blue flags and bunting. They all looked brilliant. The prize for the best decorated van went to Dot and Bill Tomlinson. We gathered in the evening for a game of bingo and a general knowledge quiz and then sat and chatted. On Friday we woke again to beautiful weather but it was a bit breezy. Everyone dressed in their patriotic attire and gathered for the jubilee street party. Hot dogs, punch and cakes were cooked and served by Les and his team of helpers. We were then entertained by Eddie and Rob till late in the evening. A brilliant time had by all. A free day Saturday. Some members went to visit the vintage car rally in Wainfleet market square, and some went into Boston and Skegness. Once again, a good rally enjoyed by all. Yvonne. Upcoming rallies: 7-11 July: Rempstone Steam Rally, Turn Post Farm, East Road, Wymeswold, LE12 6ST. 22-25 July: Arena UK, Allington Lane, Allington, Grantham NG32 2EF. 5-7 August: Dunham Millennium Centre, Low St, Dunham on Trent, NG22 0UD. 12-16 August: Bakewell Showground, Agricultural Way, Bakewell, DE45 1AH. 28-31 August: Lancashire invite to Lytham St Anne’s (see Lancashire rally for details).

EAST WESSEX The lovely Bee Hive Field in Bradford on Avon was the venue for our rally in May. 12 East Wessex vans were joined by three Avon, one West Country, one Kent and two West Wessex vans, and we were delighted to welcome West Wessex Chair, Maria, for her first visit to our group for some time. The rally got off to a good start with hot sunshine until evening when we took to the pods for our get together. Sadly, the rain decided to put in an appearance on Friday morning as people continued to arrive, but brightened up enough for some to venture into Bradford on Avon on foot or by bus. Saturday was another about turn weatherwise, and after a cloudy start the sun came out and temperature rose. Hosts Sheila and Larry served a cream tea in the afternoon, which obviously went down well as by the time Roger and I got back from our trip to Bath, a bit later than expected, the only thing left was a plate of crumbs! Later, we met up in the pods for chairman’s chit chat followed by the ever popular card bingo and Sheila’s raffle. John McCrae from the Kent group kept us entertained with his music, getting us to carry on singing when he stopped and then restarted the music, 34 MOTOR CARAVANNER July 2022

(remember I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue?), which is harder than you would think – so thank you for that – and for sharing your music collection with us. We’ve had impromptu entertainment at a couple of field rallies now, and we love it. Sunday was brilliant sun again and people went in various directions along the canal towards Trowbridge or Bradford on Avon, or out for lunch. Sadly, the workers amongst us had to pack up to go home, leaving the lucky retirees to enjoy the rest of the rally. Diane. Upcoming TCs: Summer field rallies are not bookable (except Hayling Island) and now no need to contact the host in advance. Please check our website Eastwessex.uk for any late changes. 14-18 July: Basingstoke Canal Centre, Mytchett Place, Mytchett, Surrey, GU16 6DD. Four-night field rally. Visitor centre, children’s adventure play area, café, boat hire, walking, cycling. Cost £15 pupn, £14 pupn singles. Arrivals after 1pm. 28 July-2 August: Weyhill Fair, Weyhill, Andover, SP11 0PP. Five-night field rally. Pubs serving food next door and nearby. Bus stop to Andover just outside. Communal barbecue if good weather. Cost £12 pupn, £11 singles. Arrivals after 1pm.

ESSEX Our weekend at Pleshey Village Hall was being run by Peter, Maureen, Jane, Geoff, Annie and Peter and the theme was ‘back to school’. It was back in February they were preparing for this particular weekend theme, producing a flyer to hand out before the rally to encourage people to dress up for the theme. We had a good turn-out. Friday night started with an Art Class members had to draw a sketch of the person sitting opposite them, to be handed in and marked for the next day, this was won by Clive. On Saturday, the weather was good with the sun shining so a lot of members sat around their vans chatting and having a few bevvies. In the evening, fun and games; egg and spoon race, balloon race and blow a cup along with a balloon pump either side of table. The Hosts then provided sausages in rolls and crisps. The Hosts for this weekend have asked to say huge thank you to everyone that dressed up in school uniforms, headmaster/headmistress costumes and thanks also to members who donated raffle prizes. These included: Robert from the Leather Bottle who donated a meal for two, The Managers from the Halfords Chatham (Sam) also Camping International (Terry). There was also money raised by the members attending that weekend, and pin badges made by Chrissie. Also to thank our Nigel for Bingo and music for the weekend. We want to thank Peter for checking the bingo tickets when members won, what a novel way of checking, it gave us all a laugh, calling out the blank spaces. The amount of money totalling over £200 was raised and also thank you to the

GROUP NEWS Essex Committee for sending a monetary donation to The Ukraine Children’s Charity. Print note: Apologies, the ‘back to school’ photo was run in last month’s (June’s) Group News accidentally. Upcoming rallies: 15-17 July: Clare Priory, CO10 8NX (Fully booked), 5-7 August: Hook Farm, CM9 6PN.

ISLE OF WIGHT Hi everyone, by the time you read this all the events for the Queen’s Jubilee will have happened, hope you all had a good time. We’ve had some lovely rallies so far this year. Starting with our Easter rally at the Fighting Cocks Pub in Hale Common, where we had an Easter egg hunt for the children and the grandchildren of the members, they ran madly around the adjoining field looking for the egg shapes we had hidden, everyone enjoyed the Easter eggs after that. Our resident barbecue chef Edwin was in attendance and did a great job. As it was Easter, we stayed an extra night and frequented the pub regularly! We had a lovely rally at the orchards playing pétanque which the men won. Watch out next time! South Thorness farm was our next time away where we had a lovely time playing games and catching up with friends. Our next rallies are Lucketts Farm and the national and I’ll report on these next time. Happy motorhoming!

KENT 27 May-1 June: Our Summer Holiday Rally commenced at Palm Bay, Cliftonville. Arrival day Friday was an absolutely fabulous day with everyone sitting out until 10pm. Saturday to Wednesday weather varied with good sunny intervals and light showers. Guests were free to spend the days as they chose with beautiful walks along the coast and beach. Towns of Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Margate, all were easily accessible by bus. Hosting was shared with Committee, Mike and Kay and Paul and Daphne. Great quiz, touchy-feely game and room 101 all taking place in the School Pagoda with nibbles and punch. 11 vans attended, two from NWM and NW, one from Essex and eight from Kent. 1-5 June: On to Rye Rugby Club for the Platinum

Jubilee Celebrations. Hosts: Committee and Paul and Daphne. Wednesday to Sunday, we had varied weather but on the whole, it was pretty good with the heavy rain staying away. Thank you to all the members that helped erect and dismantle the marquees. We had a ‘Best Dressed Dog’ show, ‘Best Illuminated Van’, ‘Best Decorated Table’, ‘Guess the Royal Connection’ quiz. Horse racing, Street Party and Proms Night. And an impromptu Rounders Game. It was a great fun time, thank you all for joining in and taking part. The Rugby Club also had entertainment in the form live music and a BBQ, they also cooked excellent good, value breakfasts. 31 vans attended, 10 from Sussex, two from Essex, two NWM and NW and 17 from Kent. Welcome to new members Lesley and Richard, look forward to meeting you soon. Please be aware that we have been forced to make another amendment to our Rally Programme. We were due to go to Bredgar Light Railway in Sittingbourne over the weekend of 5-7 August. The new venue is Headcorn Aerodrome, Shenley Road, Headcorn, Nr. Ashford, TN27 9HX. LANCASHIRE St Joseph’s, Brindle rally from 29 Apr to 2nd May: There were 14 ‘vans, all Lancashire. A rather upsetting time as the Chairman and the Secretary resigned. The remainder of the committee had a brief meeting when new people were co-opted on, and Dean was reinstated. The meeting then decided to wait until the next rally to sort positions etc. Riverside Cononley rally 12-15 May: A new venue! A new Committee! Hosts were Allan and Barbara and Jack and Marie. 33 ‘vans including one NWM&NW, one S&W Wales, five Yorkshire and 26 Lancs. Marie did a ‘van quiz to exercise the brains. All were welcomed, especially first time ralliers Susan and Brian. On Friday night, Allan presented outdoor bingo. The evening then spent chatting. On Saturday, the sun shone and most went shopping or wandering around discovering this new area. Then there was an extraordinary committee meeting where a new Committee was sorted, and Chairperson elected, Lisa Kindleysides and a new secretary, Barbara Hodgson. Most of the remaining important posts were filled and new people given positions. We wish the new committee all the luck in the world and hope that you all experience a fulfilling and happy time. The sun continued to shine for the evening get-together. Take Your Pick was followed with a new game; Val’s Crap Prize Bingo! She’s full of new ideas! The evening ended with a different kind of coffee morning Lancashire group: New Chairperson, Lisa Kindleysides

MOTORCYCLE 2-13 May, Chestnuts Campsite, Fundenhall: 21 Motorhomes with motorbikes were parked on a very quiet site surrounded by countryside just outside Norwich. We were joined by five more during the rally. The campsite owners, Trevor and Lynn ran a coffee shop next door with a plentiful supply of homemade cakes. Yum! There is so much to see here in this part of Norfolk. Martin arranged a group ride out every other day allowing members to go off exploring on their own too. We had group ride outs to Norwich, Gorleston-onSea, Thetford and The Dad’s Army Museum, Lowestoft and Lakenheath. On our ride out to Mildenhall we were amazed by the Osprey doing fly rounds. (See photo). Martin also led the group to the local Bike Night twice, where we got to see a lot of Motorbikes. All types, old and new. The village pub provided reasonably priced burgers and hot dogs. Both great evenings out. On our free days, group members went out walking around the countryside, on bicycles to local villages or on motorbikes, further afield. These included the Norfolk Tank Museum Norwich, Wymondham, Banham Zoo, Lyng Motorcross, National Trust properties nearby and a local Airshow. On our Ride out days, we got together to socialise in the evenings. The site owners allowed us to use their seating in the coffee shop outside area, where we had quizzes, Pete and Debbie’s Bingo and a Raffle. 13-19 May Reydon Sports & Community Centre: Invite from Anglia Group. 17 vans from MCG joined us at this rally and one new member who joined the group. There were 15 motorbikes in total and Martin organised two ride outs. The first one to David Silver’s Honda Museum (for our Honda fans). There were two floors of Hondas of all sizes and ages and judging from the chatter from everyone, many had owned at least one Honda, ‘back in the day’!? After a bit of ‘off roading/ enduro riding’ along a local By Way, we stopped off at the cafe called Sizewell ‘T’ for refreshments. The second ride out was to Orford Quay and Shingle Street. Both rides included great scenery. We joined in with the Anglia group in the evenings for quizzes, many of which were about music! It was still too chilly for sitting together as a group outdoors in the evenings but Tony and Sandra organised a very enjoyable Fish and Chip

NENE VALLEY Two rallies to report on this month. 10 vans enjoyed a sunny weekend at Quorn Station. We welcomed visitors from East Midlands and Chiltern, also we were pleased to meet new Nene Valley members, Andy and Mandy, and Steve and Wendy. The railway ran a very busy timetable with steam and diesel trains all weekend. We had the added bonus of a vintage car and motorbike show, plus traction engines in full steam for the entire weekend. A licenced bar, café and food vans made a most enjoyable rally with great company. 13 vans, including four vans from Chiltern, were able to enjoy a breezy, but mainly sunny, weekend at our Cherry Tree Farm site. The farm is quite remote with narrow roads leading to it, which added to the excitement of getting there (I think). Friday evening saw fish and chips being ordered and fetched for us by Paul, Pat and Denis. On Saturday, a relaxed coffee morning was held, whilst the afternoon was taken up with games of archery, quoites and horseshoe hurling, all finished with tea and cakes. Thanks to Denis and Jane for organising the games, and everybody that joined in. Sunday morning coffee was followed by a raffle, which wound-up a very pleasant weekend with good company. We wish to thank all those whose efforts made the weekend possible. Upcoming rallies: 1-9 July: Reydon Sports & Community Centre, Wangford Road, Reydon, Southwold, IP18 6PA, cost £12 pupn. 22-24 July: Old Dairy Farm Craft Centre, Main Street, Upper Stowe, NN7 4SH, cost £12 pupn. 5-8 August: Home Farm Rally Field, Bridge Road, Stoke Bruerne, NN12 7SY.

NORTHERN COUNTIES Hi everyone. By the time you read this, we have had the first of our follow-on rallies in the Lakes. April 29 til May 4, we had 43 vans at Ambleside Rugby Club. Thank you to the host’s Una McNichol/Michael Kennedy also Marcia Holmes/Peter Stout. Following on May 4-8, we had 46 vans at Braithwaite Memorial Hall. We had the use of the hall where we had three nights of games, raffles and fancy dress. Thank you to the host’s Eddie and Valerie Elliott, also Fred and Dot Kain. Last of the follow-on rallies from May 8-13, we had 27 vans at Spital Farm (Kendal) were there was a short walk to a retail park and not much further into town where there were plenty of shops/pubs etc. Thanks to the hosts Dave and Jan and the committee that were there helping to park up etc. Unfortunately, the weather for the three rallies was not the best but the members made the best of it. Our next rally from May 20-23 was a joint event between Northern Counties and the Yorkshire group at Kay’s Barn, Dunnington, just off the A64 south of York. We had a total of 90 vans turned up for the weekend. We had a hog roast, raffles, bingo, disco, other games, a singing duo, fancy dress (cowboy theme) and line dancing. Thanks to the hosts George and Nora (NC) and Mark and Sahra (York). Upcoming rallies: 2-6 June: Stanhope Showground, The Queen’s Jubilee (already taken place). Party of which we have a disco, live entertainment, games and raffles etc. This would be followed by the National. 24-27 June: Redcar Rugby Club. This would then be followed in July by our next follow-on rallies in the Lakes, which will be advertised on our web page.

NORTHERN IRELAND 27-29 May, 2022: Magherafelt Rally: All 51 vans were greeted with a very warm welcome by our hosts Sandra, Vic and their little helpers, ably assisted by Doreen and Jim as we arrived in Magherafelt on a glorious Friday evening. Everyone was escorted to their pitch for the weekend with courtesy and a joke which got everyone in a relaxed mood. After getting settled in and the necessary things done-such as kettle on, cans open etc. we got sorted out for the Friday night entertainment. I think we’d all agree that entertained we were, whether through the “swing-hip-swing” game you were swinging your dogs, raccoons or what every else was swinging, the contestants have to be congratulated for the effort they all put into to each game. The Friday night was rounded of by a selection of much appreciated music by the resident DJ Gary. We all awoke to another glorious day on Saturday and headed to the Craft Fair, where we were treated to a beautiful display for jams, paintings, knitting, woodcraft, bric-a-brack and needle >> July 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 37

GROUP NEWS craft. Congratulations to everyone who participated. The children also were catered for with colouring and crafts. The remainder of the day was spent relaxing or for those who needed to off load some money shopping in Magherafelt. Saturday evening, we all made our way to the main hall where we were entertained by “Clearwater”. Line dancing, waltzing, jiving and a lot more was performed with great enthusiasm. It was also a night for celebrating birthdays with congratulations to Jenny Smith and Jim Bothwell (who didn’t want anyone to know his age, but he will be 76 next year). Everyone waited with expectation as the raffle was carried out under the watchful eye of George and Evie. As we all made our way out of our motorhomes on Sunday morning, we were greeted by even more sunshine (yes, three days in a row). Thank you hosts. All made their way to the school for our traditional “Coffee Morning” and were spoiled with birthday cake. The quiz and number plate draws took place with the winners being: Quiz Jenny Smith: Number Plate: David McFadden and Phillip Cardwell. As rallies go, it always takes a mixture of certain things to make it a good weekend. This weekend, we had an abundance of all the right ingredients i.e. brilliant weather, brilliant people and outstanding hosts. It was great for us all to meet up with friends old and new. Also to enjoy the excitement of those members who were out in their new motorhomes. A big thanks to our hosts Sandra, Vic, little helpers, Doreen, Jim who were ably assisted throughout by Diane and George and Elena and David. Roley, Jo and John.

NWM&NW The rally at Weston Park for the bank holiday had a disappointing turnout with only 11 vans. But those who attended enjoyed the lovely weather in picturesque surroundings. We welcomed new members Brian and Rose Griffiths and visitors from Yorkshire group, Neil and Wendy Morris. It was wonderful being able to sit out in the sunshine chatting with friends. Some enjoyed refreshments in the park’s cafés, some went on cycle rides around the park whilst others took a more leisurely approach on the little train. On Saturday evening, most took the stroll through the woods to the stables room where we played the dice game for twenty pences. Candy won all the coins and had great plans for all the cash! Sunday and Monday was the plant fair, an ideal opportunity to look for the more unusual plants for the garden. Another leisurely walk through the woods for a very sociable evening and games of Uno. A big thank to Jon and Elaine for parking the vans who along with Keith McKinnon carried the equipment to the stables. Well done and thanks to those who came and had a good time. What a glorious four days we had at Belmont 38 MOTOR CARAVANNER July 2022

Camping. A total of 15 vans joined us with visitors from South and West Wales and East Midlands. Some walked to Marbury Country Park and viewed the sculptures in the trees and even journeyed on to Anderton Boat Lift, a most impressive piece of Victorian engineering - one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways. The two local pubs and the ice cream farm did very well from the warm weather as members visited for cooling refreshments. Peter and Jon did an impromptu concert in the shade of the large tree in the middle of the field while others tried their hand at Kubb or boules. Many thanks to all who came and enjoyed this very relaxing meet. Our third rally this month was at The Hollies. a new venue close to Dagfields Antique and Craft Centre. Geoff and Jon parked up 17 vans, including new member, Ken Cowley and visitors from Yorkshire, Lynda and Bert. It was a short, pleasant walk through the woods to Dagfields, where many enjoyed meals or just browsed the many small shops and antique barns. In the evening, we were able to gather in a gazebo donated to the group by Rose Healey, our late chair person. Many thanks Rose. Saturday was our usual bingo game when Jon and Elaine and Margaret Mckinnon took most of the money while Lynda and Agnes had the leftovers. Thank you Two Sues who were the callers showing off improved calling and ball handling techniques (no balls on the floor). A good time was had by all. Upcoming rallies: 16-21 July: Porthmadog Football Club, Y Traeth, Porthmadog, LL49 9PP. This rally needs to be booked. 21-25 July: Bala Rugby Club, Tegid Street, off Station Road, LL23 7DZ. SCOTTISH Hello fellow members. Summer is in the air as the sun shines brightly. Nine Scottish members and one visitor all attended the meet at Rosehearty. A meal was enjoyed on our first night at a local hotel, most attended. Other evenings we had use of the room on site, enjoying drinks nibbles a quiz and a singsong. During the day, some caught the bus to Fraserburgh and some played Viking Kubb. The follow-on meet at Alford was attended by seven from the Scottish Group and three visitors. Being in a country park, some went walks while others visited the transport and heritage museums. After which a few, including myself, had lunch in the local Haughton Hotel. In the evening, we had use of a room in the large onsite house. Drinks and nibbles were enjoyed as was the raffle, quiz and play your cards right. The next meet will be at The Clink in

GROUP NEWS Auchtermuchty. Please keep an eye on Facebook and Scottish Group website for any updates. For example, the August meet at Cullerlie Farm near Echt may yet be cancelled, as only two committee and one member currently booked.

SEVERN VALLEY We had a great rally at The Holding Stables, Wilmcote. The sun shone for the 18 Severn Valley vans who attended. Tony hosted, with Kirstie and Richard assisting. Friday members relaxed and enjoyed the warm weather sunbathing outside the vans in the lovely peaceful surroundings. In the evening, some had fun playing bingo with the locals at the neighbouring social club, having many wins on the bingo and the raffle. On Saturday, many ventured into Stratford-upon-Avon for some Shakespearean culture, taking the train or bus in, and for the more energetic, a four-mile walk along the scenic canal path. Late Saturday afternoon, the sun reappeared, and many members enjoyed playing/ watching the boules competition. Coffee morning was held on the Sunday morning, which was Derek Lawton’s birthday, and he was wished a very happy birthday by all the rally members, followed by the raffle. Upcoming rallies: 1-3 July: Raphaels , Evesham, WR11 4BP, £10 pupn. 15-17 July: Upton Blues Festival, WR8 0EN, £13 pupn. 29 July-1 August: Welland Steam Fair, WR13 6LN, £55 for the weekend including admission to the show, no concessions. 4-8 August: Severn Valley Birthday Bash, new venue Alveley Social Club, WV15 6LN, no need to book, £13 pupn.

SW PENINSULA We are delighted to announce a change to the rally programme for September, as follows:16-19 September: (three nights) Bossiney, Tintagel, PL34 0AY, £10 pupn, no EHU. Sea views, Tintagel is an easy 15-minute walk from the site. Sloping ground. Directions: B3263 Boscastle/Tintagel Road, site entrance opposite Bossiney Tea Rooms, use Satnav. The rally at Globe Vale (22-25 September) has now been CANCELLED. The May rally at Carlyon Bay was hosted by Sandy and Ian Swain. It was a good turnout of 17 vans (13 SWP, two West Country and two Avon) and the site owners were pleased to see us again after several years’ break. Sandy and Ian had lots going on, making use of the under-cover recreational area, keeping everyone well entertained. There were birthday celebrations for Barrie Tippett and also Avon group friend, Dave Tarling, plus a warm welcome for SWP day visitors Diane and Fred Stevens and ex-members, Chris and Simon Marsh, who came along to wish Dave a happy birthday – all frequent ralliers at Little Winnick. Several ralliers had to depart

Ray popping the cork with his sabrage sword SW Peninsula group on Sunday due to commitments, including Brian and Sandra George who were away to see their grandson finish the Ten Tors. Thank you Sandy and Ian for a fun time. The first rally in June was at Home Farm, Blue Anchor, over the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations Bank Holiday. Five vans (four SWPG and one West Country) pitched up in splendid isolation on the site’s rally field. There was an additional £3 pupn for EHU, which we chose to take, other than Chris and Mick Ellis, arriving for the first trip out in their new-to-them van, and the opportunity to test everything out. The weather was on form with blue skies and plenty of sun for the first two days and we got together with our various plates of buffet goodies and favourite tipples for the toastings as the rally progressed. This was all interspersed watching the steam trains on the West Somerset Railway make their daily journeys to and from Bishops Lydeard and Minehead, coupled with the programmes being televised. Everyone ‘chipped in’ and all agreed it was an ideal rally. A reminder to either let Head Office or SWPG Secretary (Barbs Noble) know of any changes to your membership details, as this helps keep information up to date. Fancy hosting a rally? Chat to your rally hosts or contact any member of the committee. Upcoming rallies: 1-4 July: Higher Harlyn Park, PL28 8SG, £19 pupn inc ehu, bookings start 1 June. 15-18 July: Stithian’s Lake, TR16 6NW, £17 pupn, no EHU, bookings start 15 June. 5-8 August: Mount Edgcombe, PL10 1HZ, £13 pupn, no EHU, bookings start 5 July. 18-22 August: Stithians Steam Fair rally, TR3 7HL, £11 pupn, £5 per person each day entry to the fair.

S&W WALES 15-17 May: Hereford Rowing Club. Many thanks for the report from Muriel Butt. A big thank you to the hosts Betty, Kath, Glyn and Peter for running the rally for all of us at this very popular venue. There were 28 vans including the hosts, the number of pitches being

GROUP NEWS restricted by the rowing club due to demand for the site. There were three visiting vans from Severn Valley and one from Essex. A warm welcome was given to new members Carol and Howard Hamilton and Peter Thomas (Junior) and Leesa Munday who were joining family club members Kath and Peter Thomas (Senior). The weather was just warm enough on Friday evening for Betty to arrange a game of bingo, assisted by Dave, but it got a bit too chilly to sit out for too long. Saturday was a much better day and there was a market in the town square with a nice coffee stall. The Black Lion pub in the town has a lovely courtyard and in the sunshine a glass of something cold went down very well. Saturday evening was also much warmer, so we had a game of bingo called by Bruce Clifton from a very good app we took note of. We were even able to sit out until late enjoying the music ably provided by Keith Yandell. On Sunday, the hosts had the coffee morning at 10:30am because of the weather forecast and we managed to get everything done before the rain came. The lucky van winners were Linda and Brian Wigley. Many of us stayed on to have lunch in the town and stayed on site until Monday morning. 1-6 June: Aberystwyth Rugby Club. This was the venue for our Platinum Jubilee Celebrations and an excellent venue it was too, with its easy flat walk through the avenue of trees and the purple flowering rhododendrons to the centre of this beautiful, old town. Our hardworking hosts were Nina and Jeff, Michaela and Martin and Jane and Ibrie who welcomed 73 vans to this spacious and level site, including 12 from Severn Valley, five from N.W.& W.Midlands, one from Lancashire and two from West Country. The club were determined to celebrate the Jubilee in style and started with a ‘Cheese and bring your own Wine’ on Thursday, which was followed by ‘Bingo with Bruce’. Friday was a beautiful sunny day and most walked to explore the lovely town of Aberystwyth with its narrow streets, historic pier, funicular railway and historic Victorian seafront, plus of course, the obligatory charity shops and Wetherspoons! All who saw it were moved by the huge statue of an angel in the town square; entirely made from knives and blades handed in to the police. The BBQ in the evening, which was skilfully cooked by Hywel and Barry, was followed by ‘Red, White and Blue Quiz’ with Bruce before the weather forced everyone indoors. As Saturday dawned windy with light rain, the celebrations were in doubt but, fortunately, the weather improved and in the afternoon, everyone congregated for a traditional street party. Many dressed up with our 50’s theme; our Chair, Betty, even had her curlers in her hair covered by a headscarf which was quite normal then, even for shopping or working. The Severn Valley visitors became the Pink Ladies and T-Birds, while most 40 MOTOR CARAVANNER July 2022

Betty & John - S&W Wales group were in red, white, and blue. Our rally officer, Keith, has just retired but we will keep him busy; had prepared a very interesting Quiz all about the Queen. We wish him a long and happy retirement. The party ended with everyone joining our Chair, Betty, in a toast to the Queen. On Sunday morning, due to the wet weather, we were lucky to be able to use the Rugby Club for our Coffee Morning. Everyone wished Elizabeth and Mark a very happy birthday and, after the raffle, retreated to their vans. Many went home later but others were able to continue rallying until the Tuesday. Upcoming rallies: 7-11 July: Brownhills Caravan Park, Newquay, SA44 6JZ, starts 12 noon. 11-14 July: Aberaeron Rugby Club, SA46 0JR, starts 12 noon. 22-25 July: Ysgol Gymraeg Caerphilly, Pontygwindy Road, CF83 3HG, new venue, interesting town and good communication links, starts 5pm. 12-14 August: Brecon Sports Assoc. Fields, LD3 7EL, Jazz festival, suits all musical tastes, starts 2pm. 23-30 August: Greenhill School, Tenby, SA70 8BN, Excellent venue close to centre of Tenby, Food Festival, starts 2pm. 9-11 September: Newton Farm, Angle, Pembs, SA71 5AG, starts 2pm. 2325 September: Pembrey Country Park, SA16 0EJ, Steam fair, starts 2pm. ADVANCED NOTICE: Christmas Party at Baskerville Hall 9-11 December. Booking details in the next magazine.

SUSSEX Hope everyone had a great Jubilee weekend, regardless of where and how you were celebrating. Our rallies in May were at Lancing and Westham/

GROUP NEWS Pevensey. The two rallies followed on from each other, meaning some members had a lovely nine-day holiday. Both were well attended, with members from our own and several other groups. At Lancing, we welcomed Linda and Gordon, first time visitors to us from the East Midlands group who won the registration number draw, and a return for Terry and Irene from West Wessex who celebrated with a win of first prize in the raffle. There has been the addition of a new coffee bar at the site, which was a huge bonus, with many making use of this welcome facility. Cream scones from Linda and Marilyn, with music performed by Alan and Mary, were both a delight to all attendees. The good weather was a bonus. The following rally at Fairfield’s Farm, Westham, was slightly dampened by a change in the skies. However, many took advantage of the nearby bus and train links to visit Hastings and Eastbourne. An extra for this site is the range of farm animals on view. Thanks to Theresa Guyver and others for posting lovely photos (especially of the white peacock) on Facebook. The local fish and chip shop did a roaring trade, particularly on Friday, following a Forum meeting. Details of our 60th Anniversary rally at Bexhill were announced (see our website page for more information) as well as other matters, including future meets. The weekend continued with alternating sun and rain episodes, with a final huddle for tea and biscuits in the hut on Monday afternoon. Hope everyone has now dried out! Jo. Upcoming rallies: 30 June-4 July: Henley SRB Moorings, book direct with site. 14-19 July: Esher Rugby Club, Soul Weekend hosted by Carole and Gordon Bennett. 28 July-2 August: Oakside Farm, Green Lane, Ringmer. Hosted by Chris and Jan Tree. Check the 2022 Programme or website for more details. Changes to existing rally dates: 26-30 September: A follow-on rally from the Fishbourne Centre, Chichester to The Barn at Lancing, some EHU available when booking. Many thanks to Marilyn for organising these extras. Last minute addition: 26-29 August: 60th Anniversary rally at Bexhill College. Four days of fun near the sea, three-nights of professional entertainment, hog roast, limited places so book your place early with Marilyn and cheque to Carole Bennett for £30 payable to Sussex MCC. Hope to see you all at upcoming meets. Stay safe and healthy.

WEST COUNTRY West Country group had an excellent three-night meeting at Warcombe Farm Caravan Park from 19-22 May. A total of 21 vans of which 16 were from West Country, two vans from SWP and three vans from Avon. On the Thursday we had a meet and greet. On Friday most of the members were off on a mystery tour by coach which took them out all day until 6pm. The tour

went across Exmoor with the first stop for coffee at the “White Horse”, and then onto Dunster which is a very pretty village with a castle. Next stop was Porlock Weir where they stopped for lunch. Next on to Lynmouth for coffee and or beer and time to look around the shops. Onwards then to the Sandy Cove Hotel at Berrynarbor for a cream tea. At each stop a raffle was held to support our chosen charity which raised over £100. Our thanks to Ken who arranged it all and kept up a very amusing running commentary during the trip. Everyone came back tired but agreed they had a wonderful day out. On Saturday, members went to either Woolacombe or Ilfracombe and in the evening, we had the use of the marquee, and played bingo and Play Your Cards Right followed by music supplied by our resident compare Ken. A great evenings entertainment was had by all. On Sunday we had a coffee morning and raffle with loads of prizes. Our thanks to Ken, Rhona and Kate for an excellent weekend.

WEST WESSEX All of the available places at The Three Magpies at Seend were quickly filled and we all arrived on a lovely sunny day to set up for a relaxing few days. There were queues of motor homers, all brandishing bus passes, waiting for buses to Melksham or Trowbridge, whilst others strolled or cycled along the towpath and a few simply relaxed in the sun. Each day there were gatherings around the motorhome of our hosts, Bett and Mike. We played games, listened to music kindly provided by Roger, joined in the singing and were entertained by the Avon Old Gitts and the karaoke. On Saturday, Bett served a cream tea which was much appreciated by everyone. All too soon it was time to pack up and depart from what had been an excellent weekend. Our Platinum Jubilee TCS at Weymouth RFC welcomed 43 motorhomes from eight groups and was a huge success despite the weather. On Wednesday evening, we had ‘Meet and Greet’ with lots of nibbles. On Thursday we had a Country and Western evening with hot dogs for everyone, and music supplied by Stephen. The fireworks on the beach could be seen from the site. The weather forecast looked more promising on Friday, so we moved our Jubilee Street party picnic forward from Saturday. The afternoon was a bit windy, but we set up all the tables outside on the grass. Just before everyone arrived with their picnics, the heavens opened and everything was thoroughly drenched. With true British spirit, everyone collected their own tables and chairs and we all squeezed under a canopy for our picnic, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Pimms, royal cupcakes, disco music and laughter completed the party. On Saturday we had more music and a ploughman’s supper, followed by a music quiz and a quiz on Queen >> July 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 41

YORKSHIRE 13-15 May: Clifton Sports Club. We had 33 vans attend this weekends rally, expertly booked in and parked up by Lenny, Yvonne, Sue and Will. (20 Yorkshire, six Essex, one East Midlands, two Northern Counties, one Anglia, one North West Mids, one Severn Valley and one West Country.) Many went over to the club house on Friday night. We had great weather on Saturday, many went 42 MOTOR CARAVANNER July 2022

into York, or went for walks. Some of us took the less strenuous route and sat in the sun all day. As the sun went down, it got kind of cold. Many retired to their vans, exhausted from all the shopping. Those with energy left, went to the club house. All in all, another great weekend. Well done to all involved in the organisation. 20-23 May: Kay’s Barn. Joint rally with Northern Counties, 89 vans attended. (38 Yorkshire Group, 48 Northern Counties Group, two Lancashire Group, one Essex Group). On Friday night, we had music, courtesy of Mark Greenley, and a free, fresh hog roast sandwich, some karaoke and dancing. Saturday, a lot of our members walked into Dunnington, the coffee shop and pubs saw a lot of members, other members took the bus into nearby towns. On Saturday night, we had a singing duo great evening with very varied music, and a raffle with many prizes. On Sunday, there was line dancing tuition in the afternoon; quite a few of our members took to this well, from new dancers to rusty members. What a great afternoon. Sunday night, many dressed up in their cowboy/ girl attire. Again Mark supplied the music; there was some line dancing, a few games of bingo and Play Your Cards Right, then more music and dancing. Thank you to everyone from the Northern Counties and Yorkshire Groups for all their help and organisation for this rally. 1-5 June: Malton and Norton Queen’s Jubilee Rally. 26 vans Yorkshire, two East Midlands, one Lancashire, one Essex. We had new members and first-time visitors to our rally this weekend. In Malton over the weekend there was a Food Festival which nearly all our members went to over the weekend, plenty of food, and especially the free sample of drinks were enjoyed. Wednesday night quiz night with a Julie quiz (who was not in attendance) – very low scoring but a good laugh. On Thursday a lot of members walked into Malton for refreshments at the local pubs, cafes. On Thursday night a music quiz, and bingo and music. We had our street party outside in the sun on Friday. Thank you to all who contributed to the buffet. We had prizes for the best dressed man – won by Mr Williamson, best dressed woman – won by Sarah Abbott and best dressed couple – won by Mrs and Mr Williamson. Also, the best decorated van – won by Chrissie and Gary. We also had a Boules competition – won by Harry and Mick. Dominoes – won by Frank and Flo. Friday night we had more quizzes, games and music. On Saturday evening we had live entertainment from singer Fiona Houghton; a very good singer with varied music styles. Fiona also judged the best dressed table in one of the intervals, the winner being Shell and Company. Another great weekend, well done all who organised and attended. Upcoming rallies: 2-5 September: Lockside Caravan Park, HG4 1TZ. 21-26 September: Royal Yacht Club, YO15 3QL. 30 September-2 October: Riverside Campsite Cononley, BD20 8LX.

orkshire, it seems, was created with motorcaravans in mind. With its wide, mostly straight, and lightly trafficked roads, it is a haven for those of us who enjoy getting out and about in the Great British countryside. Fine weather and good fortune shone down on us during our most recent visit, and we were, as always, enchanted with what we saw, who we met, and what we ate. The county plays host to two national parks. The North York Moors, with its spectacular heritage coastline, is a joy to behold. The Yorkshire Dales with its high peaks, low valleys, flowing rivers, and patchwork fields ribboned with dry stone walling, is simply outstanding. The landscape, with its picturesque and varied countryside, is simply breathtaking. It has inspired many novels including, Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. It was there that she wrote 'In winter nothing more dreary, in summer nothing more divine, than >>

In more contemporary times has come James Herriot's All creatures great and small and the television spin-off that series of recollections produced. The county’s dramatic scenery has also provided the backdrop for countless films, from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves to Dracula and Calendar Girls. Yorkshire is a vast county and, love it as we do, it is simply impossible to cover it all in a single feature. The modest chunk of Yorkshire life we encountered last month, centred on the east of the county, an area of Wolds for walking and sea views to die for. The first part of our adventure began after we had located, and set up at, Wolds Way Caravan and Camping site in West Knapton. Derek Watson, the farmer, has created a gloriously

With very modern facilities and a small, on-site shop, this site perfectly demonstrates how well run, small, independently operated campsites should be. We had chosen this location for its proximity to the Wolds Way, a 79mile walking trail that winds its way through some of England's most tranquil and gentle countryside. It stretches from the Humber estuary, and runs along wooded slopes and tranquil valleys to Filey Brigg on the Yorkshire coast. This National Trail, launched in 1982, celebrates its 40th Anniversary this coming October and plans to celebrate that event are well in hand. Locally based artists Ian and Stef Mitchell will also be taking inspiration from this stunning landscape to create a major art exhibition celebrating the Yorkshire Wolds and the National Trail. Are you driving illegally?

When did you last check your motorhome weight? Ministry figures suggest up to 80% of motorhomes may be operating overloaded! Drive an overloaded motorhome and you not only risk a fine, you also risk your insurance and the safety of you and your passengers!

When looking to buy your next motorhome, insist on an accurate, up-to-date weight ticket! The brochure may state a MIRO or payload allowance, but these figures can be out by as much as 5% (average 125kg). This is more likely to be against you than in your favour, so it is always recommended that you visit a weighbridge to check your vehicle’s weight.

Need to uprate to carry more payload?

If you think you might have a payload issue, we can help. SvTech is able to increase/uprate the payload allowance on many makes and models. Behind the scenes of every SvTech uprate, testing of a vehicle is carried out to create a ministry recognised test report, which is then use to cover subsequent uprates. This report and testing is vital in supporting an uprate, and is a legal requirement. Do not be fooled into thinking it’s just a paperwork exercise, as offered by others.

Reaching 70? Need to consider downrating?

SvTech can downrate your motorhome to 3500kg should you not pass, or wish to take, your medical. You must first weigh the motorhome to find out what payload you will have available at 3500kg. For further guidance on downrating please visit our website at www.svtech.co.uk/motor-home-downrates To promote road safety, SvTech designed a free-to-use, Load Distribution Analysis (LDA) program which helps the user to know their likely laden weight and how best to position their goods about the vehicle to avoid an axle overload. Please visit our website www.svtech.co.uk/lda to find out how you can stay safely within your vehicle limits.

For any questions regarding these matters, please contact 01772 621800 or email, webenquiries@svtech.co.uk

food shops, fabulous restaurants, breweries and off licences abound throughout the village. But the real epicurean epicentre lies at Talbot Yard. With its butcher, baker, and a macaroon maker, artisan food producers fill every space of this former stable complex. It has its own gelataria, coffee roastery, and even a distillery where you can take gin making classes and walk away with a bottle of your very own recipe gin. Frenchman Florian Poirot came to Malton 14 years ago and his shop and kitchen in Talbot Yard produces and sells over 18 different flavours of macaroon. over the world. Some, like those we tasted, never even made it past the door! To the southeast of Malton lies the historic market town of Beverly, some 30 miles distant. It was here that we camped again. This time at Butt Farm Caravan, Camping and Glamping site, a working family farm situated 2 miles from town. The farm is located on a footpath and cycleway network enabling you to walk and cycle into Beverley and enjoy the surrounding areas. As well as being run by friendly Yorkshire folk, the farm has its very own World War 2 Gun Emplacements. Ask nicely and Oly may give you a guided tour! Oly and his wife Jen took over the tenancy of Butt Farm in 2014. Set in 180 acres it is home to cattle, sheep, and chickens. Pygmy goats (Billy and Gruff) live in a paddock at the entrance to the campsite, and shortly after you park up, Tiger the farm cat will wander over to say hello. There is a lot to do in Beverly. We walked round the town centre, using one of several town trails, and paid a visit to the Minster. The town boasts two significant churches and

OUT & ABOUT | SUMMER MAINTENANCE

GET SET FOR er fun g summ th n i t s a wor risk w ? Don’t d Michael Ho y d a e r s an mmer France van su s a y r a a s c r e o c mot nan Is your ack of mainte l h throug hile many members use their motorcaravans the year round, many do not. For those who have used their van throughout the winter, there are things to be done, to make it summertime ready, just as there are for those bringing theirs out of wintertime storage. We fall into the all-year round category, and for us, summertime maintenance procedures are more of a kit changeover. But for those whose vans have been stored away for several months, you’ll need to check that everything is ship shape and in good working order to ensure your summer outings do not get spoiled.

W

56 MOTOR CARAVANNER July 2022

Vehicle Checks

Check your tyres. After a few months in storage tyres can lose air pressure and may need re-inflating. Check the pressures, look for worn tread and tyre wall deformity, and make sure wheel nuts are secure. Test the starting battery is holding its charge and that the alternator is performing its task. Check engine oil, water cooling systems and brake fluid levels are all correct. Start the engine, check the control panel for any warning lights and check that headlamps, running lights, indicators and windscreen wipers are working well. Look over the body exterior checking for dents, scratches, leaks, cracks, loose panels, and paintwork

problems that might have occurred while the van has been off the road. Check seams and weatherstripping around doors, windows, rooflights, TV aerials, and anywhere else where the body work is penetrated by wires or cables. Don’t forget the add-ons. If you have not used the bike carrier over winter and want to do so in the summer, check that it is in good working condition

On Board Checks

Check all onboard lights and electrical appliances for faults. Pay particular attention to the leisure batteries which may have lost

charge and if they have not been used or checked during the winter, they might be flat or even need replacing. Inspecting gas tanks, bottles and appliances are essential safety checks that must be made. Remember the rubber tubing that supplies gas to each appliance has an expiry date and summer is a good time to locate that date and check it is still valid. Check, and if necessary, change the batteries on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Why compromise safety for the price of a couple of AA batteries? Inspect the dates of fire extinguishers. They are there to fulfil a vital role and

you will kick, or worse, burn, yourself badly, if they do not work properly in an emergency. As well as testing the cooking appliances, test the fridge in electric and gas mode. Check the door seals properly and the ice box compartment door operates correctly. You do not want supplies to spoil in summertime heat. To keep your motorcaravan cool all summer long, it pays to check windows and air vents before you travel. When they have not been used for a while, sometimes they can be difficult to open and close fully. One of the flimsiest parts of any motorhome are window blinds and we find they >>

OUT & ABOUT | SUMMER MAINTENANCE are the most prone to problems. Check they work and pull across completely and easily. At the same time have a look at cab curtains, blinds, or screens. With longer evenings and earlier sunrises, you may feel the need to keep your van interior dark when you want to sleep. Over winter, water tanks may have succumbed to unpleasant bacteria or algae formation and may need to be sterilised and flushed thoroughly to make them fresh and safe. We always change our Wave water filter twice a year and thoroughly sanitise our water system before we put the new one in.

Add-ons and Take Offs

Summertime is a good excuse to clean and clear out the contents you carry in the van on an everyday basis. For those whose motor homes have been laid up over winter it is

wise to check what has been stored over the period. Any food and bottled water past its sell by date is probably not worth keeping. So, take it off the van use it up quickly at home, and load new product with longer dates on board for emergencies.

We do the same with our essential spares carried and I use the opportunity to top up any items we may have used over the winter such as fuses or sink plugs. For those who, like us, have been cruising the year round, it is time to change over what we carry. Out goes the heavy extra >>

OUT & ABOUT | SUMMER MAINTENANCE blankets that take up space and in comes our BBQ. We start by removing everything from Voyager and sorting through every item to decide whether it truly deserves a place on board or not. Doing so keeps our payload in check and makes sure we do not clutter up the van to the point we cannot find what we need when we want to. If anything is broken then it needs to be properly fixed or thrown away. We take off the electric fan heater we keep for winter evenings and the thermal windscreen blind. We also off-load; De-icer, ice scrapers, antifreeze, cold weather coats, head torches and welly boots. We add, tents, awnings, outdoor games, and the BBQ, not forgetting the charcoal. They are the obvious items. Less obvious, and therefore more likely to be forgotten, is the bug spray to clean the windscreen and repellent to keep insects off

us. Do not forget to pack sunscreen and any of those low power electric cooling fans. Check your cables and chargers and ensure that you keep the correct ones on board and put those needed for winter equipment away in a safe place come the time when you need to make the next seasonal changeover

When it comes to outdoor activities, we check our e-bikes, the bike carrier and we make sure the charger is on board. We, like many, who enjoy outdoor games, enjoy playing pétanque and because it is heavy, only travels with us in the summer season. Likewise, if you enjoy them, pack Frisbees, cricket kit, footballs, and boules. Fisher folk should cast (get it?) an eye over their gear to make sure it is in good condition Sometimes bad weather can get in the way of enjoyment, so it is always good to have some indoor travel games such as scrabble, chess, draughts, dominoes, a pack of cards or backgammon at hand. Using your van often involves sharing time with friends and family. Playing together is a great memory maker. Even when you lose! international motor insurance. Remember that now, instead of having GB on the back of the van to reflect your country of origin, you should correctly change that to read UK. Most of this might seem obvious, but some items often get overlooked. It is crucial to ensure your van equipment and paperwork is all in proper order, especially if your campervan has been unused for a while. Summer’s sunny weather offers plenty of opportunity to make the most of your campervan, with rallies, festivals, camping, and road trips popular among members. We just need to make sure we are, in the words of Baden Powell, “Prepared”. Freelance travel writers, Frances and Michael Howorth joined the club in 2020. They tour the UK in Voyager, a 6.4m Fiat Ducato custom converted to their own design.
