It should be a site which you have recently visited and can recommend. Around 250-500 words + a 'site summary’ box to include address and contact details, cost, facilities, directions and nearby attractions. Add some good quality photographs and send them to: mark.shreeve@micropress.co.uk Lastly, please remember that we have had lots of new members joining us and some attending your group may be new to our Club, it may even be their first rally ever! Be kind, and say 'Hi', make them feel welcome; after all we are a friendly bunch. Jacci Durkee

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Eric South on 11th January at the age of 97, following a long battle with illness. Eric, and his wife Ivy who survives him, were long standing members of the club and until very recently they had continued to join rallies and take several trips each year. Over the years they made many friends and were enthusiastic advocates of the lifestyle, often sharing stories of trips they had taken and the friends they had met. Eric will be very much missed and our thoughts are with Ivy and the family at this difficult time.

ELIZABETH TOOMBS

It is with great sadness the Scottish Group have to announce the passing in December 2021 of Elizabeth Toombs. Known to most members as Bet she and her husband Brian an ex chairman were both still serving committee members up until the AGM in 2021. She will be fondly remembered and our condolences go out to Brian and his family.

It is with the deepest regret the Lancashire Group announces the passing of one of its longtime members, Brian Burkes. Brian passed away peacefully on Wednesday night, 9th February, after a long illness. He will be missed for his dry wit and easy-going manner. Our thoughts are with Beryl and Family at this sad time.

Highway Code changes put onus on drivers of larger vehicles

C

hanges to the UK’s Highway Code introduced at the end of January will put a greater onus on drivers of motorhomes. The revisions are aimed at creating a 'hierarchy of road users’ – giving priority to pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders in many situations, while putting more responsibility on drivers of larger vehicles, such as motorhomes. The larger the vehicle, the greater will be the liability. Under the updates to the Code, local authorities will be given more power to fine drivers for making illegal manoeuvres, such as entering a box junction without a clear exit or ignoring a red light. Being caught on a CCTV camera could land drivers with a £70 fixed penalty through the post, though there is expected to be a short period of grace before the new rules are enforced. According to recent research from legal services company, Slater and Gordon (S+G), more than half

of drivers (56%) failed to correctly identify what the new rules were, leaving them at significant risk of prosecution. With up to six penalty points added for each breach of the rules, drivers could be at serious risk of losing their license. Central to the changes is the rule that drivers will no longer have priority at junctions. If a driver is

Going Dutch The revised Code suggests that drivers of all vehicles should open doors using the 'Dutch reach’ technique. This is where you use the opposite hand to open the door, so the left hand if you are opening the driver’s door on the right of the vehicle. This forces the driver, or passenger on the other side of the van, to turn around more and look towards the rear of the vehicle, where there may be a cyclist about to pass.

turning at a junction and there is a more vulnerable road user, such as a pedestrian or cyclist, waiting to cross, they will have the right of way and the vehicle will have to wait. You are also expected to stop at a zebra crossing if people are waiting to cross, not just if they are already crossing, as before. Cyclists are being encouraged to ride further out from the kerb, with drivers expected to give them more room and to provide at least 1.5m of overtaking space at speeds up to 30mph. Motorists are also encouraged not to cut across cyclists when turning, but to treat them as another motor vehicle. Also in the update, drivers are now prohibited from using a handheld device for anything, not just making phone calls or texting, even if the vehicle is not moving. Mobile phones can still be used to take hands-free calls, for payment of tolls and for navigation, but only when securely fixed in the vehicle. March 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 15

SHOWROOM SHORTLIST

In the market for a six-berth coachbuilt under £65,000? Buying advice from Gentleman Jack.

SIX-BERTH SO

T

he working title for this month’s Shortlist was 'Family Favourites’ because families were the original target market for the genre. However, families don’t all come in the favoured TV ad style of Mum and Dad and a few 'beaming’ children. Often, they include those not partnered, older and/or more distant relatives, plus pals along for the ride. Recently I was asked to recommend a pre-owned six-berth coachbuilt for a group not related in any way, but united by their membership of a deep sea diving club! When looking at potential purchases, it is essential that mobhanded motorcaravanners research the suitability of the sleeping arrangements for the make-up of their particular group of fellow travellers. For example, it might not be appropriate for some to share a double-bed. In addition, there is the question

of access and egress. Great Grandad or Aunty Maud may find climbing a spindly ladder to an overcab bed 'a step too far’…quite literally. Something else which has become apparent whilst sharing our life with four generations of Bancroft motorcaravanners, is that if you feed children…they tend to grow! Thus, all of this month’s lovelies have six adult-sized berths. This is not always the case in multiberth motorcaravans, in some there are beds that are barely more than 5 feet (1.52m) long. Both the Elddis Autoquest and the Swift Edge [1] are available as 'dealer specials’. These include a seriously-upgraded specification, for very little extra dosh. In addition The Autoquest is also available as the Compass Avantgarde 196, same manufacturer but different furnishing fabrics and external graphics. Type of storage is also worth

2 considering. Some purchasers will require voluminous unobstructed storage such as this under-seat unit [2 - Swift Edge]. For others, shelved and subdivided overhead storage will be a priority [3 – Auto-Roller]. Those wanting to transport bikes, mobility scooters and so on, might benefit by looking at examples with a large exterioraccess garage [4 - Auto-Trail Expedition].

ELDDIS AUTOQUEST 196 Elddis is now part of the Erwin Hymer Group, but remains fiercely-independent within it, and tightly focussed on designing and building well-equipped Brit-friendly motorhomes at an affordable price and with a decent payload. The Autoquest 196 is a case in point. All are built on the Tempo Libero version (closed chassis rails) of the Peugeot Boxer chassis-cab, which gives the vehicle extra rigidity, a compliant ride and smooth 16 MOTOR CARAVANNER March 2022

effortless progress. Elddis has for some time operated a 'Belts for Berths’ design philosophy and years of experience

in the sector has resulted in a practical no-nonsense layout… easy to live with and easy to live in. For the 2022 model year, auto

Points to ponder Firstly, travel seats. Not all are as sculptured or as

generously-sized as those in the Auto-Roller [5]. Make sure all potential passengers can get comfortable. Secondly, watch the weight. Quoted payloads only include a nominal 75kg for the driver. If it is intended to carry five adult passengers, the payload on some in this market sector might not be adequate unless a chassis upgrade is specified.

SHOWROOM SHORTLIST

AUTO-TRAIL EXPEDITION C73 Auto-Trail was previously known for producing mid-market and palatial flagship offerings (with windscreen prices to match). The Expedition range of PVC and coachbuilt motorcaravans marks a change of direction as A-T has become a serious contender in the VFM sector. Speaking of price, it had better be explained that the price quoted includes the optional extra RFSB option which replaces the usual offside 'L’-shaped settee with a double Pullman dinette. Underpinnings are the latest version of the ubiquitous Fiat Ducato 3,500kg chassis-cab, though a F-O-C chassis upgrade to 3,650kg is available at time of ordering. This of course adds payload, but also has implications for drivers; they must have Group C1 on their

Arrangements for the somnolent include two double-beds that can be left 'made-up’, the hinged overcab one, and the permanent high-level offering topping the transverse exterior-access garage at the far rear. SWIFT EDGE 476 The Swift Group is based in Cottingham where they make a huge variety of leisure vehicles and park homes. Usefully, their design team cross-pollinates ideas and practices from the different product lines. Escape is newish, but not brand new. It was conceived a few years ago as an affordable range of motorhomes to replace the Escape range which over the years had received several corporate shoves upmarket, leaving a gap at the VFM end, which Edge has filled with panache. Experienced purchasers may spot where the economies have been made to achieve the amazingly slim price-tag. That said, what matters is 'all there’ and then some! Full GRP bodyshell, Grade Three insulation for all-year around use in moderate climates, a well-equipped galley, plus the option to sleep in single-beds – easy-access high-level longitudinal permanent ones at the far rear, likely to be at the top of many prospective purchasers’ wish lists. he original Scudo was popular with smaller and bespoke converters, most were made into elevatingroof campervans or high-top motorcaravans, though there were a few coachbuilts. We predict that this latest incarnation will achieve similar market penetration, principally because the all-electric versions have the same payload as diesel powered examples. 20 vans (18 Anglia and 2 Essex) came to Roydon Village Hall for the first Anglia Rally of 2022. This one was fully booked the first day that bookings started owing to the lack of space for vans. We actually had 5 birthdays to celebrate over the weekend with Kens 70th and Bobs 84th on January 25th, Jenny Easey's on the 30th (She's a spring chicken), Derek and Eddie Whitewood on the 2nd of Feb 81 and 83 respectively. Our Treasurer Carol produced a cake with their names on plaques on the top. Since it was iced but on top of a hollow cardboard box, we couldn't eat any of it, but it was much admired and created some amusement. Friday evening Rose provided cheese and biscuits for us all to celebrate Kens 70th. Thanks Rose, much appreciated. Ken and Rose then put on a game of card bingo which all enjoyed. Saturday, most went into the town and at 6pm we all gathered in the hall for a sausage, mash and beans meal followed by apple crumble with custard produced by Ken, Rose, Keith and Teresa slaving over a hot kitchen stove. Ken then held a somewhat belated Christmas quiz which got our brains working. Pat and Dave Hills from Essex then entertained us with music, songs and many of us took to the floor and danced. Thanks very much to them. Sunday morning tea, coffee, raffle and Chairmans chat and some very nice cupcakes from Jenny Wood for all of us rounded off a great weekend. Scribe Derek. CHILTERN No rallies to report on this month but we did have a get-together at our Day Meet on 29 January at Dobbies Garden Centre in Wendover. The turnout was quite disappointing with only 23 attendees. This may have been due to the restrictions on tables and eating set out in advance by the staff at the Centre. It was good to catch up with those who did attend and there was much chat and excitement about the forthcoming rallies. 2022 is Chiltern's 60th Anniversary and we have a brilliant programme organised to celebrate this event on 2-5 June at Hurst School. This is a bookable rally and at the time of writing there are still places available. The weather was very frosty and cold, but everyone's spirits were high and looking forward to a Scottish themed weekend. On Friday evening the rally was opened by a welcoming chat from our chairperson, followed by bingo and a Scottish themed quiz, won by Val and her table. After a Saturday coffee morning some members walked into the village while others went on a bus trip into Melton Mowbray to buy the obligatory Melton Pork Pie. The hall was opened in the afternoon for tea and coffee. Saturday evening, members dressed in their Scottish attire and after the addressing of the haggis the members were served a 3-course meal prepared by Carol and her helpers. Very nice it was too. Our annual Curling competition followed the meal and the event was won by Mandy. Disco Dave followed this with country music which the members enjoyed dancing too and then the night finished with a disco. Sunday coffee morning the Chairperson thanked everyone who had helped make it a successful rally and hoped we all had a safe journey home. Yvonne. 30 MOTOR CARAVANNER March 2022

Hello everyone, there's no rally report this month, as sadly, despite the rally officers' best efforts, no venue for January could be found. Securing venues is becoming difficult in parts of our area as the authorities seem to want to confine camping to commercial sites, and many of those remain closed for the winter anyway.

On the plus side, our rally programme is looking good for this year, with more rallies planned to last longer than just a weekend. There are still some gaps to fill, which is why members haven't received a copy yet, but we will send programmes out by email or post as soon as we can. I am pleased to report that after much toing and froing, our valiant rally officers have succeeded in booking a new venue within walking distance of Winchester for the latter part of March (see below). Volunteers to host rallies are thin on ground at the moment, so please do step forward and offer to do one if you can. On longer rallies, we could maybe look at having co-hosts if this would encourage more volunteers. After all the work in booking sites, we don't want to cancel a rally for lack of a host and risk upsetting the venue and possibly losing a venue altogether. If you can help out, just speak to Jim Harris as host coordinator, or contact any other committee member. Also, if you are going to the National and want to park with our group, please let Janet Macey know. Looking forward to meeting up with you all soon. New members and visitors always welcome. No need to book. Diane. ESSEX We attended Chelmer Valley School on a cold evening with a very good turnout. With members attending from Kent, Chiltern Anglia Sussex and of course, Essex. The weekend started with usual bout of bingo in a nice warm hall, with tea and coffee on the go. Saturday was left to members own resources. It was

certainly nice to see the local Council had renovated the local pathways around Chelmer School avoiding the main roads. Many of the members went for meals either in town or local hostelry. On returning to the school in afternoon for another nice warming cup of tea or coffee, and our entertainer for the evening Carol Harper arrived to set up her sound system. At 7pm, everyone arrived back in the hall, for a great evening's entertainment. After the 3rd song, most people were up on the dancefloor jigging away. Our thanks go to Wol and Ann for recommending Carol, she was absolutely great and a superb selection of songs, so much so, we have booked her again for our Queens Platinum rally at Weeley. On Sunday, everyone departed from a great weekend. Bob T Upcoming rallies: Chelmer Valley School 11-13 March, CM1 7ER. We do have entertainment in the evening 'Clayton' is a singer. Mayflower School 25-27 March, CM12 0RT. Hosts Chris and John and crew.

KENT Well, here we are in February and to date, the weather has been pretty incredible. Although the ground is wet, we have had surprisingly little rain and several relatively warm sunny days. Pleased to welcome new members Jeanne and Derek, who joined the club in January. January was to have been our New Year Rally but regrettable the Committee decided to cancel this due to the rapidly increasing number of Covid infections at the time and despite all the work going into preparing this event, we still believe this was the correct decision. So really looking forward to what we hope will be a successful rally programme in 2022. Please note some of our rallies will remain bookable due to the restrictive area for parking and we still require Hosts for some. Please offer to help if you can. First Rally 2022: 11-13 February at Sandwich Junior School. Thank you very much, Marilynn, Tony, John and Mandy for hosting. Because the school had an inset day, we were extremely lucky to be given the chance of arriving at 2pm, rather than 6pm. The sun was shining, although a little windy it got the weekend off to a good start. Friday evening in the school hall, we had a fun evening with music quizzes and a pass the parcel game with a difference. Saturday saw many of us walking out into and around Sandwich and enjoying Sandwich's amenities. Although a cold wind was blowing, the sun shone. Murder Mystery entertainment in the evening, thank you to those taking part. Followed by Mandy's music and a raffle. Fabulous cheese board, made by Tony. Sunday, usual coffee in the hall prior to departure. 24 vans, 17 vans Kent, 3 vans Essex and 4 vans from Sussex. Welcome to Gill and Alan, new Kent members, first rally.

Lancashire group: High spirits in Lancashire

LANCASHIRE January 21st brought our T/C celebration of Burns Night (and David's birthday). The weather was damp and cold so the men with help from Mel did all the booking in and parking. 35 vans arrived which included 1 from Yorkshire and 1 Lancs. lady member who had never rallied with us before. Welcome Louise and all! Friday night was spent selling and buying tickets for two raffles (as the New Year T/C was cancelled) plus Bonus Ball and bingo tickets. Our Chairman, Don welcomed everyone to the venue and told of the basic domestics around the site. Then it was on with three games of bingo and a quiz with a Scottish theme. Of course, the team who had 2 Scots won convincingly! My team only scored 11 out of 25! Dean played music for the rest of the evening, so line dancers and others got their exercise. Early start for hosts (mainly Brian) as went over to the hall early for 'spud bashing'. (The neeps were prepared on Friday by two very enthusiastic members, Lisa and Mel. In the afternoon, the hall was used for games. The most popular was Kurling (sic). The eventual winners were Les and Bill. Approaching 7pm and everyone was invited to collect a wee dram of whisky in readiness for the toast and sat eagerly waiting for the traditional 32 MOTOR CARAVANNER March 2022

Lancashire group: Brian & John meal but first there was the traditional procession to the music of the bagpipes played by Dean via his laptop, before the address to the haggis. John Hunter doing the honours. We have nominated him for an Oscar. The meal was cooked by Sandra and Lisa and was really good, with many having seconds. And so, the entertainment continued with Damon Noon, our friendly artist, who excelled with his repertoire and kept us dancing to the end with just a short break for Take Your Pick. Damon and his daughter Britany joined in Best of Friends. What a night! On Sunday Coffee Morning, spirits were still high so there was lots of chatter. When all had their drink of choice the Chairman thanked the hosts, David, Joy, Brian and me, Alma, as well as all the numerous helpers without whom it just couldn't happen. The raffles were done as well as the Bonus Ball (Brian won!) so the T/c ended with Don wished all a safe onward journey. Your temporary scribe, Alma (POSITION VACANT if interested apply to Chairman. Training given.) Upcoming TCs: 4-6 March Lancashire Park High School, Venables Ave, Colne, BB8 7DP, own drinks, not

before 2pm. 25-27 March Lancashire, Hoghton Village Hall, Bolton Road, PR5 0SG, own drinks, bookable, 2pm start. 1-3 April Lancashire Dale Hey Farm, Ribchester, PR3 3XL, own drinks, not before 2pm.

If you want to tell the group about the bike you have now or one you had in the 'good old days', then send your write up to me at: noreenb56@gmail. com. Up to 400 words and a photo too if you want. It won't be too long now till we meet up again. We have a great rally year coming up and full details can be found on our MCG website and the Events Tab on our Motorcycle Group Facebook page. Our confirmed rallies so far are: 29 April-2 May at Sheringham High School, Holt. This is being run by the Anglia group. 2-13 May Chestnut Campsite, Fundenhall. By the time you read this magazine, there will be more rallies added to the list. Regards, Noreen.

NENE VALLEY As we couldn't get a hall for our normal January rally, we had to, very reluctantly, start our 2022 rallies in February. Consequently, I have no January rally news to report on this month. Our next rally will be 18-20 March at Geddington Youth Club. Please make sure to follow the directions given, otherwise you'll either have to travel through what can be quite a deep ford in your van or get stuck on the narrow bridge over it, neither of which will do your blood pressure much good and will certainly put a damper on your weekend. However, if you fancy a paddle in the ford, make sure to pack your wellies. We have the use of the hall for the weekend which is just on the edge of the village. A short walk from the youth club will take you to the heart of the village which has a lovely church and a couple of pubs (both of which appear to be open). Unfortunately, the nice little tea shop fell victim to the pandemic and has closed. For the more energetic members there is plenty of walking to be had. The National Rally will be here before we know it, fingers crossed. Members wishing to take part in the

Homecraft exhibits must register their intention to do so and can either do this themselves or let our Secretary Peter know which exhibits they are entering (07790 779024) and he will do it for you. Upcoming rallies: 18-20 March, Geddington Youth Club, Grafton Road, Geddington, NN14 1AJ, Start 1pm, Cost: £12 pupn. 21-24 April, Barnstones C&C Park, Main Street, Great Bourton, OX17 1QU, Start 1pm, Cost: £12 pupn (including electric) plus rally fee. 27-29 May, Cherry Tree Farm, Woodford Hill, Woodford Halse, nr. Daventry, NN11 3SB, Start 1pm, Cost: £12 pupn.

NORTHERN COUNTIES Hi everyone, we had a friends meet at Riverside Park Wooler. We hired the local church hall which some of our members participated in a Burns night. We had haggis nips and tatties supplied by a local fish and chip shop. George Jobson blessed the haggis. Tina and Richard Fisher sang and played their guitars. We also had a sing along with Ann Cobb and Brenda Stanton and a poem from Ellen Hanby. Thank you to everyone who took part. Jo and Neil Huggon organized one of their everpopular circular walks in the local countryside, passing the local hamlet of Humbleton with great views of Northumberland. Our rally officer Dave Hird has stepped up as Chairman for Northern Counties and our Assistant Rally Officer George Davie has stepped up to Rally Officer. We would like to take this opportunity from all our members to wish them good luck in their new positions. Thanks, Nora. Upcoming TCs: Houghall Campus, Durham 11-14 February (Valentine's Day). Blucher Social Club, Newcastle, 4-7 March. Heighley Gate Garden Centre, Morpeth 11-14 March. Amble Foreshore, Northumberland, 1-4 April. Guisborough Prior Pursglove College, 14-18 April. All TS are on Northern Counties website.

NORTHERN IRELAND MODEL PRIMARY SCHOOL ENNISKILLEN JANUARY 2022. Because of the implications of Covid, La Mon House Hotel dinner dance had to be cancelled earlier this month. This was to be the first meeting of 2022. We're now almost two years into this dreadful pandemic, but I do believe we can at last start to become optimistic with what are definitely green shoots of normality. With the easing of restrictions, we were now able to make our way to Model Primary School Enniskillen, where we had an excellent weekend. On Friday evening, 53 (one further van arrived on Saturday morning. Total vans: 54) vans arrived and were quickly parked up by our hosts Andy Clark and Jim Niblock with the clerical work ably conducted by Eleanor >> March 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 33

GROUP NEWS Clark and Eileen Niblock. The weather was cold, but still pleasant for the time of year. Ida Elliott kindly presented Hessian shopping bags to the first twenty vans in. Thank you, Ida. This was a beautiful gesture but not an encouragement to come early, please don't arrive before start time. We were thankfully able to avail of the school hall and started off with a session of bingo. Florence Little conducted the proceedings and did so in a very professional manner. Florence knows all the jargon that only bingo players know and that coupled with a nice clear voice there were few problems. Well, some thought she was a bit quick, but I think they may well just have been a bit slow. She was assisted by Gary and Yvonne. The evening continued with music played softly to enable a bit of craic, talk and banter. The Times Newspaper named Enniskillen as one of the best places in the UK to live being a “Super friendly market town with good manners and even better looks”. On Saturday, most of us campers made our way into town to test this theory and yes they got it right. The Saturday evening dance attracted over ninety patrons so that in itself tells a story with Disco Joe again at the Turn Table, (Oh dear, what age am I) We had a great evening's craic and yes it did in fact run into Sunday. Sunday Coffee morning and we were addressed by our Chairman, Joe McClune, who firstly thanked our hosts, Andy, Eleanor, Jim and Eileen and I hope they realize how much we all appreciate their sterling efforts. We had four new families on board, the Catherwoods, the Ostlers, the McCartneys and the Calvins… We welcome you all and hope you enjoyed yourselves. One further young member was in attendance, could we welcome young Willow Todd, recent new born to Ashlene and Alan and Great Granddaughter to Jack and Florence Little. Congratulations. One new van, Dorothy Graham, Health to drive and may you have many enjoyable trips in it. Numberplate draws. There were two being, Gary Baird and Robert Smith. Quiz. Ellie Robinson won it again, she surely must be a “The Chase” candidate. Florence McClune was busy snapping with her camera, the results can be viewed in “The Gallery”. We look forward to seeing you at our future rallies. Please keep checking the webpage as venues are still proving to be difficult and change of venues is becoming the norm. Enda and Flo.

NWM&NW Hi everyone. This news will be short as there are no rallies to report on. The rally at Cockshutt Millennium Hall was cancelled due to the increasing number of Covid cases at the time. On a sad note, I must announce the passing of Billy Johnston on 22nd January following quite a long illness. 36 MOTOR CARAVANNER March 2022

Our thoughts are with Sue and their families. Following lengthy discussions with the management at Uttoxeter Racecourse the rally on 14-19 June, planned to be a follow on to the National Rally at Stafford, is now not taking place. Let's hope the rest of our programme can proceed as planned. At present, the committee are continuing with bookings for village halls. To book, ring Mike 01785 223382 or Penny 01782 397847. We do need hosts for some rallies so if you can help in some way, please speak to a committee member. Stay safe and keep well. Upcoming rallies: 4-6 March, Offley Hay Village Hall, 2 Copmere End, Stafford, ST21 6HH. A new venue. Please do not arrive before 1pm as the car park is in use. £12pupn. 18-20 March, Fulford Village Hall, Fulford Road, Fulford, Stoke on Trent, ST11 9QT. Please do not arrive before 5pm as the car park is in use. £12pupn. 1-3 April Stone Cricket Club, Lichfield Road, Stone, ST15 8QH, Farmers' Market on Saturday, Close to town. Bar drinks £12.50pupn. 15-18 April, Greenhous West Mids Showground, Gravel Lane, Shrewsbury, SY1 2PF, Easter Rally. Walk into town. Own drinks, £15pupn.

SCOTTISH Hello fellow members. Spring is in the air and the flowers are blooming early. Here in the northeast, we are still clearing up after the storms. By the time you read this newsletter, we'll be back on the road again attending rallies. I don't want to keep repeating things, but your committee require help in the form of rally hosts. Due to the Covid situation, it's understandable, but in saying that the last couple of years keeping the club going has landed on a few people. Please come forward with ideas and offers of help as its your club and we aim to please. To keep up with what's happening within the club please refer to page 85 of the handbook and sites publication for 2022. At the foot of the page, you'll see a large picture of business type card the club has produced. I personally think this one of the best things COM have come up with to market the club. These are available in business card form to hand out to possible new recruits. Some 25 years ago I was secretary for a time and the Scottish Group had 260 members. Currently this stands at 135 despite far more Motorcaravans on the road these days. Without going back to historic reasons for the drop in membership we need new blood to carry the Group forward. These cards are available from head office or our secretary. I personally find it great the QR code in the bottom right I scanned and loaded it into the notes section of my iPhone. Having done this, it's like having an app, I click on it and it takes me straight to the website. From there, you can click on the map section and call up the listed rallies of any Group. Check it out

and see what you think. Hope to see you at Cairnsmill, St Andrews or Tayport in March. Regards, Squeezebox.

SEVERN VALLEY 32 vans attended Severn Valley's first rally of 2022 at Norgren Social Club, Shipston-on-Stour. Of the 32 vans in attendance, 22 were members of Severn Valley, 5 from East Midlands, 2 from Avon, 1 from Lancashire, 1 from S&W Wales and 1 from West Wessex. The weekend started off promising weather wise however by Sunday it was very wet and miserable with many of the vans needing rescuing from the field by one of our members Norman in his 4x4! So thank you Norman for all your help this weekend, we know our members appreciated it and many would still be there now if it wasn't for Norman. Our Friday night quiz was attended by many members and was followed by a Shipston-on-Stour clue finding walk on Saturday which showcased many of the local establishments that members were able to enjoy. Many of our members also went on the bus into Stratford Upon Avon or took advantage of the flat scenic cycle routes around the local town and villages. Saturday evening's entertainment was Karaoke hosted by one of our members Keith and to celebrate Valentine’s Day, all of our ladies were given a rose by Allen our rally officer. Chris and Fred hosted the Valentines rally and on Saturday night treated our members to a supper of hot dogs and jacket potatoes. Our special thanks to them for all their hard work over the weekend. Our rally then ended with our usual Sunday morning coffee morning and raffle. Our next rally will be the 25-27 March at Avonbank Meadows, Pershore. A full list of our confirmed rally's throughout the year can be found on our website and are also bookable via our website. Please note all rally's start at 12 noon.

Hoping this month's newsletter finds everyone well. It's congratulations to Brian and Lilah Langdown, who were among the lucky draw winners in the February issue of the Motor Caravanner (see page 6). Our first rally of this year was hosted by Mel and Pete Maddocks at the Fox & Hounds on the edge of Dartmoor. Here is what the ralliers got up to: Thank you everyone who joined us on our first rally of the year at The Fox & Hounds for our Burns Night celebration. We had 15 vans: 13 SWP, 1 Nene Valley and 1 West Country. The weather was cold but beautiful with amazing sunsets and sun rises. Some members walked the moorland and Tors whilst others took advantage of the Granite way to walk or cycle (as we did) enjoying hot chocolate and cake at Bundu. I think we all visited

Tavistock over the few days. Friday afternoon we all got together for a mulled wine and a chat even though it was frosty! Friday night saw us in the skittle barn practicing for the trophy! Saturday night, we all enjoyed a Burns supper where Barbs recited the ode to the Haggis! We later retired to the skittle alley where Joe (15 years old) became our youngest skittle trophy winner. Well done, Joe! Thank you all once again for making this a very enjoyable rally. Please see the photos on our Facebook Page that tells the story. (Author Mel Maddocks). There are members coming forward to host: Jackie and Stuart Mosley are hosting Watergate Bay, Linda and Graham Morris are hosting Trevornick Holiday Park, Sandy and Ian Swain are hosting Carlyon Bay Holiday Park, and Sally and Ian Lewis are doing Stithians Lakes in July. If you're considering hosting, please remember there is usually a committee member or rallier who has hosted to help out, especially with the money-side! If anyone still has not received this year's rally programme, it may be that your membership details are not up to date. For example, perhaps you have changed your email address or telephone number? Please get in touch with Barbara (Group Secretary) and she will be able to check and sort an update for you. Upcoming rallies: Watergate Bay, TR8 4AD, 25-28 March, £15.00 pupn inc ehu, bookings start 25th February. Trevornick Holiday Park, TR8 5PW, 7-11 April, £15.00 pupn inc ehu, bookings start 7 March.

S&W WALES Hello again, I'm so happy to see the days getting longer knowing that the Covid situation is improving and our rallying days are getting closer. Unfortunately, I have no rallies to report on this month so it gives me an opportunity to look at what is scheduled to come soon. The welcoming Princess Gwenllian Centre is our venue for St. David's Day when Welsh costume or Welsh rugby shirts are very welcome. From the centre, it's a short walk to the bus stop and convenient buses to Carmarthen for some retail therapy or you can walk to Kidwelly Quay through the wetlands which are a haven for wildlife and birds. The Norman Kidwelly castle in the centre of the village is well worth a visit and very interesting. It's suggested that members bring items of food and/or drink which are 'Made in Wales' to share at a tasting session: For example, cheese, bara brith, Welsh cakes or drinks – the list is endless: Betty, our Chair, even suggested gin! The venue for early April is Dan yr Ogof: The site is in an amazing situation with fabulous views and walks and the option of visiting the impressive caves, dinosaur park and interesting farm, all on your doorstep. The excellent facilities block is definitely a bonus. >> March 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 37

GROUP NEWS The Easter weekend sees our annual pilgrimage to Buttyland near Tenby, where you can walk to Manorbier and the beautiful beach. Alternatively, you can catch the bus to Tenby from the nearby bus stop or catch the train from the village railway station. I can recommend the fish and chips from the on-site shop too. Your committee would like to remind everyone that there are vacancies for rally hosts which need to be filled in order for the rallies to take place. Remember that you do not need to be experienced as you can be paired up with those that are. In my experience, it's a good way to get to know other members. Meanwhile continue to stay safe and looking forward to our rallies. Upcoming rallies: 4-6 March, Princess Gwenllian Centre, Kidwelly, SA17 4UL, St.David's Day Weekend, starts 5pm. 1-3 April, Dan-yr-Ogof Caves, Abercraf, SA0 1GJ, amazing venue, starts 2pm. 14-19 April, Buttyland Manor, Manorbier, SA70 7SN, Easter weekend, starts 2pm. 28 April-3 May, Sully Sports & Social Club, CF64 5SP, May Bank Holiday weekend, starts 2pm. 13-15 May, Ross on Wye Rowing Club, HR9 7DD, starts 2pm.

SUSSEX A big thank you to the many who braved the atrocious weather to attend our soup meet at Dial Post. It was one of the best attended day meets in many years, despite the rain. The soups (made by Carole Bennett, Marilyn Harris, Carol Seymour and yours truly) were very well received, nothing much left over for our supper but… anyone wanting the recipes could contact Carole Bennett who will pass the requests on. Many thanks to Clive and Len for their dishwashing duties. Also celebrating that day was Maurice Brooks who surprised everyone with a lovely sugary feast of doughnuts for his 80th birthday. Hope you had a lovely day, Maurice, with friends, family and especially your future members disguised as grandsons. Also present was Jim Spring, who is planning a sponsored climb to Mount Kilimanjaro soon in aid of prostate cancer. Donations can be made via his JustGiving page. Jo Smaje. Our next meet will soon be here, 4-6 March, at Tillingbourne Junior School, Chilworth, Surrey, GU4 8NB. This will be followed by our Easter extravaganza at St Richards College in Bexhill, 14-18 April. There are still a couple of places available at the time of writing this. Anyone interested should contact our secretary Carole Bennett, details on our Facebook page. Looking forward to seeing you all there. The following rally is 19-24 May at Fairfield's Farm, Eastbourne Road, West Ham, BN24 5NG. Easy travelling to Pevensey, Eastbourne and Hastings. Check out the nearby castle and church in West Ham village, well worth a visit.

WEST COUNTRY A very successful first meeting this year was held at the popular Riverside Caravan Park, South Molton, hosted by Samantha and Tim Snell who were hosting for the first time, a big thank you from all of the committee for a very well organised meeting. There were 47 vans in total, 25 from West Country, 8 from Avon group, 1 from Wessex , 1 from Severn Valley 9 from SWP and 1 from South and South West Wales. We had Bingo, A quiz, Mr and Mrs and all followed by a disco after in the evening by Ken who kindly bought his equipment along to entertain us. Some of the members went to the South Molton penny market on Saturday braving the freezing weather. Sunday we woke up to rain all day but enjoyed a coffee morning and raffle in the site's resturant and entertainment hall. A good many of members enjoyed the food that Riverside is well known for including a huge breakfast that would beat most large appetites. Our next meeting is at Minnows Caravan Park, Samford Peverell, from 17-20 March. It is right on the side of the canal, and Tiverton can be reached by walking along the tow path stopping at a couple of pubs on the way. There is now a waiting list to come and join us, so please check with the rally officer if not already booked in. Hidden Valley Caravan Park In Ilfracombe is the on 6-10 April, please check online or ring either the secretary or rally officer to check availability.

WEST WESSEX Signs of Spring are beginning to appear in our gardens and hedgerows, so it is time to get the motorhome ready for the road! The bar/restaurant serves food and the Sunday lunch comes highly recommend. A footpath runs from the top of the rally field into Swanage Town Centre - about a 15-20 minute walk. There will be a few quizzes and a raffle too. Late bookings: Please ring Gill on 07746 058606 or Maria on 07887 393137. This is always an evening not to be missed. On Saturday evening, we'll serve jacket potatoes with a choice of fillings, followed by a disco to dance the night away. On Sunday, a roast lunch will be followed by an Easter Egg Hunt to give you a chance to walk off your lunch. On Monday afternoon, there will be an Easter Bonnet Parade with a cream tea and in the evening there will be games and a raffle. We're hoping to raise a good sum for the charity whilst having a brilliant time. The cost is £70 to include food on Saturday and Sunday. We hope to see you at our fun filled Easter break. Gill is taking bookings on 07746 058602. If you are unable to attend a TCs that you've booked, please be sure to let the host know so that they don't sit all day waiting for you to arrive. Our full programme of TCs has been updated on our website, and more details of each event will be added as hosts make their plans, so please check it from time to time.

YORKSHIRE We had 17 vans turn up for our first rally in 2022 at The Rolls Royce Club, Barnsoldwick. Lovely weekend! Most of our members had a meal in the clubhouse before enjoying the quiz night, which unfortunately none of us won. On Saturday, most of our members went into Barnsoldwick to take advantage of all the small shops, pubs and cafes, before returning to go into club house to be entertained by the female singer, who had a few up dancing. OU T & A B OU T THIS MONTH WE VISIT...

NORFOLK & SUFFOLK

Sky's the

limit

Big skies, rolling countryside, miles of gorgeous coastline, a National Park and picture-postcard villages all combine to great effect in Norfolk and Suffolk. Head eastwards to find out why this laid-back pocket of the country is a firm favourite with holiday makers all year round. Norwich

40 MOTOR CARAVANNER March 2022

Norwich shopping

Norfolk’s capital is an eclectic mix of old and new, with its famed cathedral and Norman castle sitting seamlessly alongside trendy bars and contemporary restaurants. As its cobbled lanes and shopping centres are all easily walkable, it’s also an ideal place to head if you fancy a spot of retail therapy. Of course, you’ll find all the usual high street favourites, but what Norwich really excels in is independent stores – over 300 of them in fact. Head to the Norwich Lanes, the Cathedral Quarter and Magdalen Street to pick up something unique. The country’s only independent department store,

Sandringham

Jarrold, is also well worth a visit.

Sandringham House

The much-loved country retreat of the Queen has now been the private home of four generations of British monarchs. The estate itself is nestled in the Norfolk Coast Area AONB, with 60 acres of impeccablykept formal gardens. Although the dog-friendly country park and visitors’ centre is open all year round, the house, its gardens and St Mary Magdalene Church open

House

from the end of March, allowing visitors a rare glimpse of royal life. Take a self-guided tour of several of the rooms in the house, with free audio guides providing a detailed insight into the royal family’s private world, alongside information on Old Hunstanton beach

the collections of art and family portraits that feature throughout. Be sure to grab some local Norfolk produce from the Terrace Café or Sandringham Shop whilst here.

Sunset at Hunstanton

With Norfolk and Suffolk being easterly counties, you’d be right in thinking that this is primarily sunrise country. However, the exception to this is Old Hunstanton beach – perched atop North Norfolk’s coast, it’s famous as being the only east coast beach that faces west, affording visitors front-row seats to spectacular sunsets over the >> March 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 41

OUT & ABOUT

>> sea. Being relatively sheltered, and quieter and sandier than the main beach at Hunstanton, this is the perfect place to bring a blanket and a picnic and enjoy watching the sun go down at any time of year.

Thursford

If you’re after a unique day out, the Thursford Collection is open during spring and summer as a working museum of mechanical organs, Wurlitzer shows, silent movies, old fashioned fairground carousels (which you can ride on for a small extra charge) and static displays of both fairground engines, road engines and all manner of related memorabilia. There’s also a behind the scenes tour on offer if you want to delve deeper. Visit during the winter months of November and December however, and the museum transforms

The Broads National Park One of 15 national parks in the country, the man-made Broads winds its way through the stunning Norfolk countryside, extending down into Suffolk. Boasting over 125 miles of lock-free waterways and myriad chocolate-box villages and towns, the Broads are home to over a quarter of the rarest plants and wildlife in the UK, including several that are unique to the area, such as the Swallowtail butterfly. Of course, exploring by boat is the best way to see the magic of these waterways, but there are also over 300km of footpaths and cycleways if you’d rather take a stroll through the tranquil landscapes and country lanes. Whether you visit to fish, birdwatch, or simply enjoy the views from a riverside pub, the Broads are a must-see while you’re in the east.

to stage the nationally-acclaimed Christmas Spectacular, featuring a cast of 130 professional singers, dancers and musicians – a truly wonderful way to get into the festive spirit.

Greene King Brewery

A staple in pubs and restaurants across Norfolk and Suffolk, Greene King has been brewing its cask ales in Bury St Edmunds for over 200 years, continuing a very long

heritage of brewing in the town (all the way back to 1086!). The historic Westgate brewery was established in 1799, using local malted barley and water from the 1,000 year old chalk wells in all of their brews. Take a guided tour through Greene King’s history and find out how their famous beers are created, and then convene back in their café where you can enjoy a tutored beer tasting, alongside two locally-made chutneys, a marmalade and a mustard, which are also made using their beers.

RSPB Minsmere

Discover some of the UK's rarest wildlife and enjoy family-friendly activities as you explore Minsmere’s network of paths through some of coastal Suffolk’s scenic woods, >>

OUT & ABOUT wetlands and heaths. If you’ve brought your binoculars, head to the coastal lagoons to see an impressive variety of birds, including avocets, bearded tits and bitterns. If you're lucky, you might even see an otter or two around the reedbed pools. Spring is an especially wonderful time to visit, when the skies resound with the sounds of birdsong.

Orford Castle

One of England’s most complete and unusual keeps, the unique polygonal tower of Orford Castle stands beside its pretty namesake town and former port, which was developed by Henry II. Considering it was built between 1165 and 1173, the castle is still remarkably intact, which allows visitors to explore from the basement (complete with its own well), through the lower and upper halls and up to the roof where there are magnificent views

seaward to Orford Ness. Around the rooms is a maze of passages leading onwards to the chapel, kitchen and other chambers in the turrets. Take the audio tour and learn more about this distinctive castle’s history.

Home to farmer and TV presenter Jimmy Doherty, this is a great attraction for animal lovers and those with little ones to entertain. Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park houses over 80 species and breeds of traditional, rare and exotic animals. From crocodiles, camels and capybara to pigs, skunks and guinea pigs – there’s plenty to see. Visit the Nature Trail and see who you meet along the way, take the kids to the WonderWood play area to build a den, or head to the Tropical House to meet some colder blooded critters and friendly birds. Fancy yourself a budding park ranger? There are also animal feeding and animal encounter experiences that can be booked for the chance to get even more up close and personal with the farm’s residents.

SECURITY

Safe travels Part 2 Immobilisers As Covid-19 changes the way we travel and enjoy our leisure time, there has been a significant rise in the theft of motorhomes and campervans. Frances & Michael Howorth investigate ways immobilisers make your van safe.

I

t is a sobering fact that since 2017, well over half a million vehicles have been stolen in Great Britain. Over 75,000 were stolen last year alone, and that figure is rising year on year. Figures suggest that nearly 30% of these vehicles are never recovered with many being stripped down for parts within hours of being stolen. One way to protect your own vehicle is to fit an aftermarket vehicle protection system or immobiliser.

46 MOTOR CARAVANNER March 2022

Reassuring

Many companies who fit immobilisers boldly state “if your motorcaravan is fitted with our immobiliser and it gets stolen and is not recovered we guarantee to give your money.” Guarantees like this, are reassuring stuff, especially when the incidence of motorcaravan theft is on the rise and there are stories circulating that many are being driven directly into containers or onto ferries and shipped abroad where they are being sold into a rapidly expanding rental market. Police have suggested that the only reason this figure is not higher in the UK, is because our vans are right hand drive. The days when you could break into a vehicle using a bent coat hanger might be long gone, but

"Campervan and motorhome thefts rose in 2020 and 2021."

figures issued by the DVLA show that in 2021 cars were stolen at a rate of one every seven minutes and that was a 33% increase on the figures they released for 2020. Campervan and motorhome thefts rose in 2020 and 2021. Not only did thefts rise year-on-year in 2021, but they also increased by a staggering 50% in the weeks following Covid lockdowns.

Maybe immobilisers are the perfect solution!

You may think that if you own a modern built motorcaravan, you already have an immobiliser. And it is true that since 1988 all new cars and vans have been fitted with factory fitted immobiliser systems. But these types of systems do not offer key protection, meaning if a thief has a cloned key, a software program that fools the Motorhomes’ Body Control Module (BCM) into thinking a new key has been programmed or the thief simply pinches the owner's keys, they can drive off with your motorhome in minutes. >>

SECURITY

Immobilisers can help keep your van secure wherever you are However, using software to block some modules in the vehicle software driven immobilisers prevents the vehicle from being driven away unless a secret pin code sequence is entered using the steering wheel control buttons. This pin sequence must be input every time before the vehicle will start. Because of their invisible nature, good immobilisers render the vehicle safe and nearly impossible to steal by someone who does not know and cannot correctly enter the sequence, even if they use the original ignition key. Of course, it is annoying at first to remember to enter a code before driving away, but the fact is, after a week or so, it becomes second nature.

Key clone

There are many levels of security ranging from wheel locks and wheel clamps up to sophisticated software devices such as electronic software based immobilisers. Motorcaravans should always be fitted with an alarm and an immobiliser, and GPS trackers are a good third option. Loud alarms attract immediate attention, deterring thieves, trackers enable you to recover a vehicle if, and when, it has been stolen but 48 MOTOR CARAVANNER March 2022

immobilisers will make the process of stealing your motorhome all but impossible. Today’s robbers use diagnostic tools to hack vehicle key codes and make up files in order to ‘key clone’ and so fool the vehicle into accepting a new key. On vehicles that use keyless systems, thieves use sophisticated RF signal boosting technology to amplify and boost a signal from a valid key, back to the vehicle in order to gain entry and steal the vehicle.

Insurance

Before spending big money on security, it makes sense to check with your motorhome insurer. They may have requirements for accredited security products. Accreditation schemes for vehicle security systems and devices in the UK are operated by Tassa, Thatcham Research and Sold Secure. The base starting point for a motorhome security system should be to have a modern, industry-standard, Thatcham-accredited alarm system, and a Tassa accredited immobiliser. Thatcham Research is the motor insurance industry owned research centre, which tests and approves vehicle alarms, immobilisers,

"Of course, it is annoying at first to remember to enter a code before driving away, but the fact is, after a week or so, it becomes second nature. " trackers, and mechanical security products. Tassa, (Tracking and Aftermarket Security System Association) was formed by aftermarket industry manufacturers and traders in 2016 when Thatcham announced it would mainly focus on tracking systems. The third main accreditation scheme for vehicle security systems and devices is Sold Secure, an organisation owned by the Master Locksmiths Association who grade their security products as Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Diamond level.

Conclusion

So if your van does not have an alarm or hidden code immobiliser fitted, it is worth considering having these retrofitted. As well as improving the security of your motorcaravan, it will enhance your peace of mind and may also reduce your insurance premiums.

T

he National Rally is organised by a small team of volunteers, and we are planning to make the National Rally at Stafford in June 2022 a true celebration of our Club’s 60th Jubilee together with the return of the National Rally after a two-year break. As a small team, we rely on more volunteers to help run the activities on offer. The National Rally team has already been joined by the North West Midlands and North Wales Group, who as the Host Group, will be welcoming you as you arrive. Other members have offered to help with craft activities, the dog show, the inter-group quiz and boules competitions

and to compere our very own talent show. If you are willing to give a little of your time, there are many ways you could get involved either as a Group or as individuals. The National Rally team are still looking for help in the following areas: 1. Tea bar: While we have volunteers to provide teas during our First Time National Ralliers meeting and the AGM, there is no one available to open the tea bar at other times. We would like to offer a cream tea during our Sunday afternoon activities. 2. Games afternoon: Would you be willing to give around an hour to run a game – any game

NATIONAL RALLY 2022

Homecraft returns

W

hile the majority of long-term members will be familiar with the Homecraft competition, it has seemed a very long two years since we have had the opportunity to stage this and newer members will probably benefit from some explanation. The Homecraft competition encourages members to show off their creativity by choosing from a wide range of categories and then submitting their creations for judging at the National Rally. Third time lucky This year we have retained the categories from the 2019 programme as many members will have already made their craftwork items and were unfortunately denied the opportunity to display them due to the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 National Jubilee Rallies – so third time lucky! This is particularly relevant in respect of the group entry category for a Christmas Tree Display which involves the participation of several people and a great deal of work. Categories The core principles are recycle, repurpose and re-use and to give everyone the chance to find something to suit their interests and skillset, there is a wide choice of subjects in the 12 craft categories (not including the group entry). The categories comprise Knitting/ Crochet, Sewing, Book Folding, Papercraft, Garden Upcycling, Drawing or Painting, Decorated Glass, Foraged Fruit Jam, Cake Decorating, Mosaic and a Wildcard category. The Wildcard category gives you the chance to use your imagination to create a commemorative item celebrating 52 MOTOR CARAVANNER March 2022

Diamond Jubilee National Rally

the Club’s 60th anniversary, based on the core principles, and display it on a 12”x 12” base. It has not been possible to carry previous entry details forward so you will have to enter your items again even if you have done so for the two cancelled events. Many Groups appoint a Homecraft Entry Co-ordinator who will collect details of individual member’s entries and send us these and this does make our administration easier! If your group doesn’t have one, please see the Group Secretary or you can submit your entries yourself. Workshops There will be a number of onsite craft workshops at the National which have proved very popular in previous years, so if you create anything at one of these, we will accept your entries on the day of the competition in the National Craft category.

The rules The full Homecraft rules and Homecraft Categories are set out in the Homecraft 2022 section of the Motorcaravanners Club Website: www.themotorcaravannersclub. co.uk and are published in the Club magazine. While these are designed to be as flexible as possible, there is nothing worse than spending time and effort creating a great entry only to find that it is ineligible for judging because of a technicality. This has unfortunately occurred in the past so please study the rules carefully and avoid this happening to you! 2020 was the official 60th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary of our Club and, now that we are finally able to belatedly celebrate this, it would be wonderful to have a record entry for Homecraft. Good luck, we can’t wait to see the results!

INSURANCE

Why specialist

motorhome insurance is a must M

otorhome or campervan insurance is a legal requirement for when you hit the open road, just like car or van insurance. However, the type of cover is very different because of the way you use your motorhome, and for all the camping gear you use when on your travels. Caravan Guard explains more. What will a motorhome insurance policy cover? There are a wide range of

motorhome insurance providers offering varying levels of cover and using different ways to rate their premiums. A comprehensive policy will include accidental damage, theft of or from your motorhome, storm and flood damage, fire damage, when touring or when in storage. Check a policy to see how much equipment and personal possessions it covers. Your camping equipment, from gas bottles to generators, driveaway awnings,

outdoor furniture, TVs, kettles, barbecues and more, can easily take you to several thousand pounds of gear. A standard car policy will generally only cover around £500 of such equipment. A common motorhome insurance claim is for windscreen and window damage so you’ll want a policy that has this cover as standard and also check what the limit for windscreen replacement is as it can cost several thousands of pounds on larger models. >>

How can I choose a reputable firm? We live in a world where policyholders can voice their delight or disgruntlement with their insurance provider to the masses online. Check online review sources such as Trustpilot.com, Review Centre, Google Business or Facebook reviews, to see how actual customers view their services. One key area is the provider’s experience of handling claims, so it’s worth looking at customer feedback in this regard. You might also want to check who the underwriter of the policy is. Is it a reputable company with a proven track record in motor insurance and handling claims effectively? March 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 57

INSURANCE New for old cover means for the first two or three years of a motorhome’s life the policy will pay for a brand new one, should it be stolen and not recovered, or damaged beyond economical repair.

"You might also be able to add or remove certain aspects of cover so you don’t end up paying for benefits you don’t need"

Legal expenses cover will cover you to fund legal proceedings to help you recover uninsured losses in the event of an accident that wasn’t your fault – such as the excess from the driver at fault. Some motorhome insurance policies will include this as standard, and others may make it an option.

Several specialist motorhome insurance providers offer breakdown cover – often as an option. Always check what’s included as standard. Make sure whatever breakdown cover you do get caters for your motorhome’s size or weight to avoid being in limbo at the side of the road should the worst happen.

What will affect the price of insurance? The value of your motorhome or campervan plays a big part in a premium calculation. But the postcode of where you store your motorhome when it’s not in use, and your no claims bonus also have some of the biggest impacts on your premium. The risk associated with your storage postcode will be assessed by historical crime rates in that area, and even risk of flooding. The type and size of your motorhome will also be considered. Expect to pay a slightly higher price if you have an A Class or an American RV. But there are some ways you can get your premium heading south. Security devices such as Thatcham Category 1 approved alarms and Thatcham approved tracking devices should help you make significant savings. On some higher value motorhomes an insurer might not even be able to offer cover if you don’t fit this type of security. High mileage, more than two named drivers, and usage such as commuting, will see your >>

INSURANCE premium rise. Try to be accurate with mileage. At Caravan Guard it seems that most customers travel less than 7000 miles per year. It’s common for first time owners to overestimate their first-year mileage. You might also be able to add or remove certain aspects of cover so you don’t end up paying for benefits you don’t need. For instance, Caravan Guard lets owners choose if they want European insurance, European breakdown or emergency accommodation covers. In recent years less than half of Caravan Guard customers have taken the European cover option.
