From the Chair

Well what a busy month we have ahead, three bank holidays to enjoy. Firstly the May Bank Holiday where I am sure most groups will have rallies for you to enjoy. Then the Coronation of King Charles The Third alongside his Queen, Camilla, a weekend of events both at groups and at home, and I hope that all members are able to enjoy the celebrations.

Last but by no means least we have the National Rally at the Three Counties Showground. This means a weekend full of activities which will include four nights entertainment, silent auction, and of course the Groups' Conference AGM and Members' Meeting. There is much more planned, see p10 of this magazine, Facebook and the Club website to keep up-to-date. I hope to see you there.

MEETING UP IN SUNNY SPAIN

While the UK had a covering of snow, a number of MCC sun seekers headed south to the Spanish sun. A chance meeting on a Benidorm campsite led to a shout out on Facebook to any members to meet up for coffee. There was 16 in total from Anglia, East Midlands, Nene Valley, Sussex, West Wessex and Yorkshire where we met up on a hot sunny morning in February, at Camping El Raco in Benidorm, organised by Dale King of Anglia group. It was lovely to sit and chat with fellow members from other groups to make new friends and memories.

CAMP WITH US THIS YEAR

Why not join a Casual Campsite in 2023

This year's Casual Campsites continue as we head to Teignmouth Rugby Club, Bitton Park Sports Field, Bitton Park Road TQ14 9DQ from 26 June - 10 July.

Cost is £10 pupn, there are no hook-ups, but we are able to charge mobility scooters etc.

Full facilities for toilets and showers, we have use of the club house on various days and evenings to be allocated once we are on site.

Bus stop is outside the gate going to Torquay and beyond where you can also get trains to further afield and ferries to Brixham.

Booking opens from 12 noon on 27 February and closes on 6pm on 29 May. 2 weeks stay from 26 June - 10 July; 1st week 26 June3 July and 2nd week 3-10 July. Awnings and pop-ups are allowed

but no groundsheets or mats. Two pets maximum.

PLEASE NOTE this has a sharp entrance on the left into the site if arriving via the town.

Our final campsite of the year takes us to Shropshire and The West Midlands Showground, Berwick Road, Shrewsbury SY1 2PF from 4-18 September.

This is a great place to visit for a CCS having plenty of space for pitches and an easy stroll into Shrewsbury town along the roads but, also, it’s on the river where, if available, there is a ferry to take you into town. I personally have worked on this site in the past while operating the Club’s exhibition stand.

AT A GLANCE

Price per pitch without hook-up will be £13 or £20 pupn including hook-up. Full facilities include toilet and showers and use of a room at all times during our stay.

Booking opens from 12 noon on 3 April and closes 6pm on 31 July. 2 weeks stay from 4-18 September; 1st week 4-11 September and 2nd week 11-18 September. Awnings and pop-ups permitted within your pitch area. Two pets maximum.

For booking

Please email Ann Bond (annbond83@gmail.com) with your details, full names, Club membership number, vehicle reg, mobile contact, dates of stay required.

As requested by the sites being visited this year, bookings will again be required. This ensures members will have a pitch on arrival also keeping to the terms of contracts, which is paramount.

All the above CCS are full payment in cash to the MCC hosts on arrival to sites. The sites’ T&Cs must also be observed during our stay.

I would kindly ask all members to check their diaries before making bookings for either of these casual campsites.

THE NATIONAL RALLY IS FAST APPROACHING

Not long now till we welcome all you members to our annual get-together at Malvern Showground. This involves a lot of pre planning, which starts as soon as the previous Rally ends.

PAUL DUMAS THE WILKINSON BROTHERS

Are you driving illegally?

When did you last check your motorhome weight? Ministry figures suggest up to 80% of motorhomes may be operating overloaded!

Drive an overloaded motorhome and you not only risk a fine, you also risk your insurance and the safety of you and your passengers!

When looking to buy your next motorhome, insist on an accurate, up -to-date weight ticket! The brochure may state a MIRO or payload allowance, but these f igures can be out by as much as 5% (average 125kg).

This is more likely to be against you than in your favour, so it is always recommended that you visit a weighbridge to check your vehicle’s weight.

Need to uprate to carry more payload?

If you think you might have a payload issue, we can help. SvTech is able to increase/uprate the payload allowance on many makes and models.

Behind the scenes of every SvTech uprate, testing of a vehicle is carried out to create a ministry recognised test report, which is then use to cover subsequent uprates. This report and testing is vital in supporting an uprate, and is a legal requirement. Do not be fooled into thinking it’s just a paperwork exercise, as offered by others.

Reaching 70? Need to consider downrating?

SvTech can downrate your motorhome to 3500kg should you not pass, or wish to take, your medical. You must first weigh the motorhome to find out what payload you will have available at 3500kg . For further guidance on downrating please visit our website at www.svtech.co.uk/motor-home-downrates

To promote road safety, SvTech designed a free -to-use, Load Distribution Analysis (LDA) program which helps the user to know their likely laden weight and how best to position their goods about the vehicle to avoid an axle overload . Please visit our website www.svtech.co.uk/lda to find out how you can stay safely within your vehicle limits.

For any questions regarding these matters, please contact 01772 621800 or email, webenquiries@svtech.co.uk

SOME RALLY HIGHLIGHTS AT A GLANCE

We are really looking forward to welcoming you to our National Rally and we want to do our very best to make sure you have a good time. There are lots of activities that you can take part in, some of which are listed below. The details of dates, time and place will be in your programme – so do read it carefully.

First time ralliers

We will be holding a “gathering” on Thursday for you to come along to ask any questions about the National rally and this year, there will be a second first-timers drop-in session on Saturday, for those who arrive after Thursday and to give all first time National ralliers another chance to come back with any questions that may have arisen.

Say hello!

Come and meet Mark, our magazine editor, and Sue, our Magazine and Handbook coordinator; Ann Bond, our Casual Campsite organiser; Les Kendrick, our FICC representative and Keith Poole, our Health & Safety Officer and Disability Advisor.

Join in

• The Homecraft competition –various sections covering different crafts and artwork.

• The annual Fun Dog Show is a chance for members to “show off” their beloved canine pet.

• Your Group are invited to take part in the Inter-Group quiz – all you need is a team of four members from your Group to take part.

As a family run business we have been around for a while and know a few things about insuring motorhomes, our cover is second to none and our customers rate us as excellent.

ECOBAT BATTERY INTRODUCES PYLONTECH LITHIUM, A NEW DIMENSION OF LEISURE BATTERY

Alongside dependability, leisure enthusiasts naturally seek ultimate performance when it comes to the batteries their motorhomes caravans and equipment rely on. So, power, weight and cyclic (discharge, charge) capacity are high on their list of priorities when considering a replacement.

priorities, and many more besides,

Ticking the boxes for these priorities, and many more besides, is a new 100Ah 12-volt lithium-ion battery from Pylon Technologies, which utilises cutting-edge lithiumiron phosphate cell technology, an embedded battery management system and a robust mechanical design, to deliver an inherently safe and extremely reliable solution, with zero maintenance.

At half the weight of an equivalent capacity lead acid battery and delivering twice the power of a conventional design, the RT 12100G31 provides an incredible cyclic capacity of more than 4,500

cycles, which, allied to its in-built heating film technology, allows it to perform at temperatures as low at minus 40 degrees Celsius, making it the first choice for those that need the best and the assurance that provides, to allow them to go longer and go further.

In addition to these headline attributes, other key features include auto-balance, which means

that those who need more capacity can simply and safely connect additional RT 12100G31 batteries in parallel without fear of internal state non-uniformity issues, and communication, incorporating RS485, CAN, Bluetooth and Dry Connect, to enable effective data transmission for the needs of various usage scenarios. Finally, owners can use all of the available 100Ah capacity, unlike the recommended 50% for lead acid batteries, so essentially doubling the run time for the same size battery and with only half the weight.

The Pylontech RT 12100G31 is available from wholesalers supplied by Ecobat Battery, the UK’s largest battery distributor, with a portfolio that also includes Victron, Odyssey, Sonnenschein, Trojan, Rolls and Numax, its own offering, which is a leading leisure brand.

ANGLIA

Thirty-one vans came to Whittlesey for Anglia’s St. Patrick's celebrations. After everyone was parked up on Friday evening we had the usual tea, coffee etc followed by bingo. Mal and Jan, who were going to be stewarding, were unable to do so owing to a van problem so other members stepped in.

During the day on Saturday, despite it being wet, most went into town for breakfast at Wetherspoons and others caught the bus to other places or went exploring the town. Mal and Jan came up by car on Saturday afternoon to cook the Irish stew and soda bread ready for the evening. Saturday evening a great meal followed by snifters of Baileys and Bushmills. Music was provided by Paul and a very good evening was had by all.

Sunday morning tea etc, raffle, Dodgy Dip and all left having had a good time in the true Anglia tradition.

Fifty-one vans came to Alderman Peel School at Wells next the Sea for our Easter Rally. We had visitors from several groups and four first timers with us. The stewards did a great job parking up as it came on to rain heavily at 1 o clock just as every van was arriving. We gathered in the hall Thursday evening for general chat with background music and heat! Yes we had heat the whole weekend in fact we had to turn some rads down Saturday night! Derek set a quiz which had brains working hard.

Friday was a free day and most went into town or further afield. In the evening tea, coffee and hot cross buns followed by cash bingo. Saturday evening we were entertained by Lawrie Haley and his brother, a duo with a great pedigree, Lawrie having been in the Rubettes and his brother bass guitar with the Monkees. They kept us going until 11.30pm with a great mix of songs and music.

Sunday we had the Easter hat parade, decorated egg and Easter card competition. The raffle was drawn and Derek actually won two prizes as well as his Dodgy Dip! At 2.30pm an Easter egg hunt for adults. In the evening the prizes were presented followed by a game of Scattergories. Dodgy Derek ran this and generally a very riotous evening ensued. All agreed that it had been one of the best Easter rallies for a long time.

Monday evening music and bingo were put on for the members who were left. Tuesday we all went home! Thanks to Keith, Teresa who found the artistes we had, Betty and Rex, Jan and Mal, Derek and Carol (for all the background work with getting the raffle, allocating prizes etc. and not forgetting Paul Cook who is Anglia’s factotum. It means he does anything we ask him). Scribe Derek

Upcoming rallies: 12-17 May at Reydon Sports Centre IP18 6PA. Starts: 1pm. 1-6 June at Hunstanton Community Centre PE34 5BW. Starts: 1pm. The Hunstanton rally is bookable from Teresa on 07739 463321.

CHILTERN

Well our March rally didn't get off the drive! Just filling the water tank and a shout of “Stop, it's off” brought an abrupt end to the van prep. A phone call from the host saying their part of the region was covered in snow and he wouldn't be able to leave his house. A quick check with the venue confirmed that the eastern half of the Chilterns had a good covering and the car park was unuseable. Thankfully it was bookable, so we had contact details and were able to stop ralliers setting off.

We looked forward to our Easter gathering at Hayling College (thank you to E. Wessex) with hopeful anticipation and thankfully the weather forecasts were improving by the day. This convenient location on a bus route and close to Lidl and a Co-op, was an excellent base. Parked up on the hard standing of the playground which was well lit and with the use of the large, but echoing, sports hall. The beach was within walking distance too and a convenient dog walk the other side of the road.

Three days of sunny weather followed, with participants using the buses to travel to Havant and beyond, as well as to the end of the beach to use the small train that runs right along the beach. Others used their bicycles to go as far as the ferry to Portsmouth. Meals out in various pubs too.

Fish and chips were purchased and had to be eaten with care to stop the seagulls stealing the chips! Even the rain on the final day didn’t stop the fun, in fact it was the sunniest rainy afternoon I’ve ever seen.

The evening meets had games, quizzes and motorhome racing, but most importantly, we were told by a first time rallier that we were so friendly that the conversations went on every night until late which made it very special.

Thank you Shirley and Peter, Sharon and Paul for a well organised, friendly rally. Can we come again please?

Just prior to the start of the Hayling College meet, we had a call from the owner of the following rally site, stating that her rally field was waterlogged and would have to cancel. This threw our rally programme into some turmoil, however our rally officer Sharon was straight onto the challenge and within two hours had managed to find a replacement, very well done and to all the helpers who managed the change with a smile.

Upcoming rallies: 12-14 May at The Gate Hangs High, Hook Norton. 25-30 May is The National Rally and AGM at Malvern. 9-12 June at Basingstoke Canal Museum. 23-25 June at Long Wittenham FC, near Abingdon. >>

Casino Night at Marshalls’ Sports Ground, Gainsborough. 25 vans were welcomed by the stewards to the annual Casino Night rally at Gainsborough. Friday evening bingo was played and Dave did a quiz.

Saturday was a free day to go into Gainsborough or enjoy fish and chips from the local chippy. Saturday evening was the time to dress in their best bib and tucker ready for casino night. Grasping their funny money, the ralliers hit the tables to see who could make the most money. The most successful gambler of the evening was Sue Louch.

Bets were then taken for the Gentlemen’s Snail Race. After lots of laughter, the eventual winner was last year’s winner Steve Louch. Then came the Ladies Race, which was won by Andrea Parnell who eventually came a close second to Steve in the Champion of Champions Race.

At the Sunday coffee morning the raffle was drawn then the chairman thanked everyone for attending and thanked the stewards Dave, Cath, Kath, and Kev for their hard work.

Country and Western Rally at Ingoldmells. The weather was very windy and wet, but all the ralliers were ready to enjoy a fun packed weekend. 33 vans attended the rally who were welcomed by the chairman, two of which were first timers.

Thursday evening started with bingo and then a western related anagram quiz and there was also a table quiz. One of the stewards Jean had counted baked beans into a jar for the members to guess how many was in. Well done, Jean. Also Ian had made a wooden horse so members could practise lassoing; such fun! On Friday after the coffee morning members went off exploring the area. In the evening there were two western quizzes and then the singers enjoyed performing on the karaoke.

Saturday was a free day to go to Skeggy or Mablethorpe or just walk and see the sparkling sea (lol). Saturday evening was dressing up time and everyone looked spectacular in their western attire and we were entertained by the superb Darren Busby.

At the Sunday coffee morning the winner of the bean competition was announced and the raffle drawn. The chairman thanked the stewards Ian, Jean, Yvonne and Brian for keeping the members entertained and thanked the members for making it a memorable weekend. Yvonne

Upcoming rallies: 12-14 May at Osmaston Polo Club, Osmaston, Ashbourne DE6 1LW. 25-30 May is the National Rally at Three Counties Show Ground, Malvern. 9-11 June at Village Hall, Southfield Lane, Beckingham, Notts. DN10 4QA. 23-27 June at Cromford RFU, Cromford Meadows, Derbyshire DE4 3RQ.

EAST WESSEX

First time hosts Mick and Myra greeted all arriving at our March rally in Weeke, Winchester and got everyone parked up very efficiently. The weekend got off to a wet start with rain for most of Friday evening, but Pete played his music to entertain us in the hall whilst Mick handed round the lovely cupcakes he had decided to bake when he found himself with a quiet moment. Much appreciated they were, too.

The local café must have done good business on Saturday and Sunday morning as members took advantage of the discount offered and flocked for cooked breakfasts or brunch.

Whilst meandering round Winchester on Saturday it became apparent that something was going on and it turned out to be an open day for the lawcourts, with visits to the cells, opportunity to take part in mock trials, and to try on barristers’ robe and wig for the all important selfies. Outside there were police stalls and children could sit astride police motorbikes and sound the siren, though the handlers clearly decided that the police dogs had had enough by then and made a tactical retreat.

Others toured the historic sights of Winchester, and one lucky couple visiting the cathedral heard the orchestra apparently rehearsing for the Coronation.

Indoor horse racing kept everyone occupied on Saturday night, with race track, horses and giant dice made by former members Vic and Yvonne and generously donated to the group. It was good to see so many members and visitors getting involved and taking part. Our life president Carol Forfar also paid us a surprise visit and Allen drew the raffle.

As summer approaches, we need volunteers to carry pods to rallies and help putting them up/taking them down. As we

ESSEX

Our rally was at Chelmer Vally High school, which is a great location and has a nice warm hall, we all met up on Friday evening. Tea and coffee was available for the weekend, parking done and the tables set up and every one was ready for a good time. Nick, Pauline, Chrisy and John were hosting the rally. We started Friday with background music by Pete the hat. A lot of members were dressed for St. Patrick's day all in green, and then a game of bingo followed by a quiz by Nick, on the subject of historical occasions. It was not easy but was great fun with good results from all teams. We had Darren and Sam who are new to motorhoming and their table won the prize! Well done.

On Saturday most of us went into town for a bit of retail therapy only to find that Chelmsford had been taken over by Batman, Del Boy, Ghostbusters and many more cars and people all dressed up in costume. They were collecting for the Haven Hospice and looked great. By 7pm we were all in the hall with Andy Webster, our singer for the evening. He sang his first song and everyone was up dancing. What a great night! The raffle was drawn at 9pm and 30 people won prizes. It was a shame it had to end, Andy was that good and so off to bed.

Sunday morning we had Nick's waffle along with tea, coffee and biscuits, we also had a little waffle from Bob. Thanks for coming to Dave and Angie from Kent also Darren and Sam, hope to see you all again soon.

Our next rally is 28 April-1 May at Pleshey Village hall, the Sreet, Pleshey, Essex CM3 1HJ The rally will have a royal theme. Woodys Dad

Prior to the National there will be a rally at South Thorness Farm on 19-21 May which has the most beautiful coastal views before some members head off to the preNational in Malvern.

KENT

Our planned rally at Bridge Farm Appledore in March was unfortunately cancelled due to the wet weather which really did put a damper on mine and many others' plans for the weekend, luckily for me I received the news prior to having packed the van... I do hope this was the case for you too!

Anyway, onwards and upwards as they say and let’s put our smiley faces on and look forward to our great programme of rallies throughout the rest of the year. The clocks have now gone forward, the evenings are getting lighter and the sun is putting his hat on, so we will soon all be able to sit out together on balmy nights having a laugh, a drink or two, chatting and putting the world to rights!

Our Easter Rally at Bexhill on Sea was attended by 23 Kent, 15 Essex, 12 Sussex, two Severn Rally, one Anglia, one East Wessex and one motorhome from Lancashire – a real hotchpotch of people but together we all had a terrific time bopping away to Goldilux on the Friday night and the great MattRockinRobins on Saturday night. Hot cross buns were shared on Friday afternoon and Sharon and Mandy facilitated some silliness on the Thursday and Sunday nights respectively. Easter bonnets were paraded on Sunday night and Vanessa and Alan won with their creative designs. The weather was kind to us and many enjoyed a seaside stroll (to the pub probably) and the Bexhill 100 Classic car rally on the Sunday.

Our upcoming rallies are as follows: 18-21 May at Fir Tree Farm, Rhodes Minnis. This rally has been cancelled due to lack of hosts! 25-30 May is the MCC National Rally and AGM. If you are attending, please contact Jan via the details below so that we can let you know what our theme will be for the Party night and whether you would be keen to have a gathering over the course of the weekend. 2-4 June at Solleys Farm, The Dairy, Church Lane, Ripple, Deal, CT14 8JL. Visit the family-run ice cream parlour with 20 flavours to choose from. Breakfasts, light lunches and snacks also available. Tractor rides (weather dependant) and farm trail. Surrounded by Kent countryside with plenty of footpaths which cross the farm. This is a bookable rally so please contact Jan on kent@motorcaravannersclub.co.uk to book. 16-18 June at Dane Court Grammar School, Broadstairs Road, Broadstairs, CT10 2RT. Our rally coincides with the Broadstairs Dickens Festival, with costumed parades, street entertainment and a number of free events. Cost is £12.50 pupn. Start time TBC. rally at Rye Rugby Club, so start rummaging through your bits and pieces to see what you could put up for auction. All items in a good state of repair are welcome not just camping related ones, however any unsold items will need to be taken home by the seller.

LANCASHIRE

Our first rally in March was a cold 5pm start at Park High School. The evening started with the payment of fees and purchase of bingo and raffle tickets and bonus ball.

Lisa opened welcoming all, especially the visitors – one Yorkshire, one Northern Counties, one East Mids and three NWM&NW. There were 23 ‘vans in total. She explained domestics and safety matters. Lots of chatter, then Allan called the bingo followed by a quiz. Dean and Jack played the music over the weekend and there was lots of variety and plenty enjoyed line dancing. The evening ended with more chatter and lots of laughter.

Saturday wake up was 11am Tai Chi exercises with Janet and Steve. Lots of people joined in, some for their first time. Many ventured out, some for lunch and others shopping or exploring the area whilst those left came into the room to play board games or just chat. There was a serious game of Sequence being played whilst it took three of us to find and sort out a programme on my laptop (with help from Josh age 11!).

Saturday night started with sale of tickets. We sang happy 9th birthday to Rosie before playing Take Your Pick. A lady is chosen to invigilate and pick the first ticket. She is escorted to the front where she puts the discs, which are thoroughly mixed, into the boxes and then covers them with lids. She is then (this time it was Jo from Northern Counties) escorted back to her seat. Allan and Brian presented the game. The first ticket belonged to Joy from East Midlands and she won

the jackpot! Oh well! There were other prizes so the game continued to the end. The night continued with dancing. Then Marie worked hard to keep order and play a new game. So many accusations of copying or lip reading etc. but mainly there was laughter! The night ended with Best of Friends.

Sunday Coffee Morning – Raffle winners paid out as well as Bonus Ball winners. Lisa thanked the hosts and all helpers and wished everyone a safe journey home.

The second rally was at a sunny Turnover Farm. Twentytwo units, one from NWM&NW. The hosts were all from our committee, Chair & ‘consort’ and treasurer & raffle ticket controller! Better known as Lisa, Dean, Tony & Hilary. I wasn’t in attendance but the reports and photos tell of a super weekend. There was lots of green on display. The costumery was of a very high standard. There were many Leprechauns, a St. Patrick and many little people dressed in green wearing various decorative items. Sue, a Leprechaun from NWM&NW, was chosen as the winner. As well as the usual games there was a new type of Race Night. Out of Bobby’s stables came a field of horses but after watching a video it appeared to me that a donkey actually won! Thanks for all your work, Bobby.

Sunday dawns with coffee morning. Time to wind up with Lisa thanking her co-hosts and all who helped and bidding all to have a safe journey. Scribe Alma

Postscript – Today, 23rd March, we attended the funeral of Kathleen Barker, one of the first members of Lancashire Group that we met over 27 years ago. There was a good turnout and the Group was well represented. Yes, it was sad but it was also lovely sharing memories with family and friends.

Upcoming rallies: 11-14 May at Aspull RUFC WN2 1PJ. Bar drinks. 25-30 May is the National Rally and AGM at Malvern WR13 6NW.

Lancashire group - Spring has sprung!

MOTORCYCLE

Thanks go to Jane and Lizzie for this month’s review: The Camper UK Spring opening weekend at Swinethorpe was an excellent way to kick off the Motorcycle group season. Two nights camping in the lush verdant countryside with entertainment and food. The weekend was planned by Camper UK to raise money for the Lincoln and Notts Air Ambulance – a very worth cause.

There was good attendance from the group – 14 members overall – minus our motorbikes of course as it’s still a bit chilly and wet. However, this didn’t detract from our enjoyment as activities and transport were laid on by Camper UK. Minibuses were available from the campsite to ferry us into Lincoln and a local garden centre. The buses stopped at Camper UK showroom where there were motorhome viewings, golf competitions, equipment demonstrations and a motorhome accessory jumble sale –some real bargains were found!

After our days out in Lincoln, it was back to the site for food and evening festivities. On Friday night, a fish and chip van was serving excellent food at very reasonable prices and in the marquee was a very well priced bar (all profits to the charity), followed by an exciting game of bingo and a live singer.

Saturday night was a huge hog roast with all the trimmings, very tasty and made with local pigs, followed by a raffle and a Neil Diamond tribute singer. Lots of singing along and dancing, much hilarity combined with excellent company and witty repartee made for a memorable weekend. A breakfast van was there both days serving the full English – so all our varied gastronomic requirements were met.

Upcoming rallies: 7-11 May at Spital Farm, Kendal, Cumbria LA9 6PJ. Invitation from Northern Counties. £9 pupn. Start time 12 noon. 25-30 May is the MCC National Rally, Three Counties Showground, Malvern, WR13 6NW. 5-10 June is the first rally of the Scotland Tour, Thomaston Farm, Ayrshire, KA19 8JH. Bookable with MCG. For further information and updates visit our website: motorcyclegroupmcc.co.uk

NENE VALLEY

Important announcement – notification of a venue change: This year’s AGM Meet will now be held at the Cogenhoe Bowls Club, on the weekend 13-15 October 2023. At this

meet, new committee members will be required

The time to consider this is now. Do not leave things until the time of the AGM. By making a decision now, you can talk to/help Committee members, and get to know what the position entails, ensuring a seamless changeover at the AGM. Please remember that not enough Committee members means no group. The future of this group is in the member's hands. We still require stewards for two meets, unfortunately no stewards mean cancelled rallies.

Our last rally was at Geddington, a small village with one of the last three Eleanor Crosses at the centre. We were

pleased to welcome new Nene Valley members, and first time ralliers Tony and Karen, lovely to meet you, and to see that you have already booked for future rallies.

Our hosts Anita and Mary Ellen did us proud with the dice game, quizzes, a raffle and hot dogs for supper, all spread over the two evenings. Anita set a clever quiz needing to be completed with names of cars and their models, a real test of the memory. The local pub welcomed most of us at some time over the weekend to enjoy their cooking, either that or the Tea Shop, whilst taking strolls around the village to see the pack-horse bridge and the ford, in between the rain showers, and having a look at the vintage fire engine, which is kept near to our rally. Our thanks go to everybody for making a very pleasant weekend. Tony

Upcoming rallies: 12-14 May at Quorn Station, Woodhouse Road, Quorn, nr Loughborough LE12 8AG. Cost £13.50 + rally fee. Limited to 15 vans. 19-22 May at Hatton Country World, Dark Lane, Hatton, Warks. CV35 8XA. Cost £13.00 + rally fee. 25-30 May is the National Rally, Three Counties Showground, Malvern. Bookings through Club, see magazine. 6-19 June at THS Exmouth Rugby Club, Imperial Rd., Royal Avenue, Exmouth EX8 1DG. Cost £13.

NORTHERN COUNTIES

Hello everyone. We have four rallies to report on for March. Firstly at Blucher Social Club 3-6 March. We had 13 vans in attendance, all Northern Counties members. We welcomed new members Robert and Nichola Simpson to their first rally. Pam and Dave Brack hosted and they put on quizzes and entertainment in the Clubhouse and also bingo – which was won by Valerie Elliot. Ray and Pauline Regan celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary, many congratulations to them.

Next we were at Leyburn Auction Mart from 17-19 March, we had 20 vans including one visitor from West Wessex. This rally was hosted by Wal and Em Meikle. We had the use of the canteen on the Saturday night so Wal and Em organised a curry/pie and chip supper. We were also able to use the canteen for Sunday coffee morning.

Following this we next went to Kielder Campsite (a commercial site), in the middle of Kielder Forest from 24-27 March. This was hosted by Pete Stout and Marcia Kennedy, assisted by Michael Kennedy and Una McNicholl. We had eight vans, including one visitor from Yorkshire. A very idyllic location for walking and cycling, and everyone agreed it was so good they want to go back!

Finally, we were at Amble Foreshore 31 March-3 April. We had 43 vans attending, with visitors from Yorkshire, Lancashire, Scotland and S&W Wales. The rally was hosted by George Jobson and John Ternent. A special shout-out to John as his van was off the road so he came to the rally early each day and stayed all day helping with the parking up. The venue is right on the seafront, overlooking the breakwater, with a market and boot sale on Sunday. We were able to use the local Amble Coquet St Club in the bar on Friday night and then the exclusive use of the upstairs room on Saturday night where we had some music and

May 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 29 GROUP NEWS >>

singing by Stuart Collingwood and Dave Brack, plus quizzes courtesy of John Cottrell and also an unusual music bingo from Susan Collingwood – a great time was had by all. Another shout-out this time for Tommy Walsh for being Keeper of the Elsan emptying!

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances we had to cancel our Easter rally at Prior Pursglove College, Guisborough.

Our Spring Lakes rallies will already have started, with the next rally being Braithwaite Memorial Hall on 3-7 May and then Kendal 7-11 May, Kendal being the only bookable one due to space. Following this we have Tynedale Rugby Club, Corbridge from 19-22 May. And let's not forget the National Rally at Malvern 25-30 May. We hope to see you at a rally soon.

NORTHERN IRELAND

St Patrick's weekend in Jordanstown. On arrival at the venue, we were warmly welcomed by hosts Harry & Jane, Tommy & Diane. We were very quickly parked and had lunch. We arrived Saturday lunch time, so unable to attend on Friday; it seems Friday night was indeed great craic, sorry to have missed it (see Florence’s take on it below).

Saturday afternoon was the serious business of six nations rugby tournament, in particular Ireland v England with a great win by Ireland. This was watched on the big screen in the school hall by a number of members.

Twenty-seven members ended up in the Portside to enjoy a meal and the rugby. For others retail therapy in nearby Abbey Centre with shops to suit all was very much enjoyed. Music later on Saturday night was by Rob Rooster who went down a storm, dance floor was busy all night.

Coffee morning and many thanks to our hosts for a job well done. 37 vans were in attendance, congrats to Alison Masters on her new van. Happy birthdays to Phillip Cardwell, David Davidson, Jenny Dowie and Eleanor McFadden, all were 21 again! Quiz winner was Violet Patrick, no. plate draw winner was Sue Corry. Chairman David brought rally to a close, thanking hosts and all who attended. A brilliant weekend. Hope to see you all soon. Anne & Robert Grant

Footnote by Florence and Joe McClune: On Friday evening having been safely parked up, we were welcomed into the hall by two lovely Irish Colleens and two Leprechauns all beautifully attired, a cocktail was offered and a game called what’s in the bag , a new one for me was thoroughly enjoyed. The hosts had two prizes for the winners. Afterwards we all chatted and caught up with each other. Everyone had a lovely evening and the hosts ensured we all had a great time, a great night with great hosts, thank you.

St Pius X College in Magherafelt, 24-26 March – This was a new venue for our club and the college gave us a very warm welcome, it had an excellent location, an easy walk into town. Our hosts for the weekend were Hugh & Moira and Andy Clarke & Sam Arlow, unfortunately Sam was delayed somewhat in arriving and the very capable Jenny Dowie immediately stepped up to the mark, volunteering to assist with the initial rush at the 5pm check in time. An excellent example of how our members work together to ensure the smooth running of the rallies.

A total of 32 vans attended, (including new members Derek & Shona), which was a good attendance despite the poor advance weather report forecasting heavy rain over the weekend. In fact, despite a few showers, some members even lit up the BBQ and some large steaks were devoured. On Saturday night a large number of other members decided to book tables and take advantage of the excellent menu at “Mary’s” a well-known (for great food) local restaurant in the town centre.

Friday night was well attended and the bingo was a great laugh with Victor trying his hand at calling the numbers. Roy Dowie provided some well received music, which was enjoyed by all.

Saturday night with a very full hall, the music was provided by the popular Dave Kane and some great moves were displayed on the dance floor.

Despite the clock moving forward an hour on the Sunday and everyone losing an hour in bed, the coffee morning was well attended. The weekend quiz took the form of six sudoku puzzles, which was won by Eleanor McFadden and Roy Dowie won the number plate draw. David Kyle-Ewing, our chairman, delivered the bad news that the rally weekends fees would be increased from 1st May to £10 per night, the first increase in fees for quite a few years. The comment was made by Iris that as it wouldn’t be until 1st May, that would give us all time to “save up”, which brought some very loud laughter. The chairman also stated that the Portrush (North West 200) weekend needed to be pre booked ASAP as it was booking up fast. He then wished us all safe home and looked forward to our next rally.

NWM&NW

Our rally in March was at the lovely village hall in the village of Tilstock near Whitchurch. It was a n Irish theme here as the Friday was St Patrick's Day. Some dressed in green or had other appropriate themed hats. Mark even brought in a Leprechaun to help with the bingo. There were 15 vans including visitors from S&W Wales and Avon. As Irish bingo wasn't popular we had normal bingo. The winners were quite well distributed among the members. I think Mark's Leprechaun helped a little. An Irish themed quiz followed. Jon and Elaine assisted by Bill and Sue (Avon Group) won the jelly babies.

As Saturday began quite sunny many took the bus to Whitchurch or the more adventurous could have gone to Shrewsbury. A few went walking around the little village and ended up at the Horseshoes pub with some taking advantage of a Chinese takeaway service or watching the rugby. In the evening there were baked potatoes with a choice of fillings. Many thanks go to Pam for the chilli and Jacqui for all her help. John Crane celebrated a significant birthday so there were two birthday cakes to enjoy. Happy birthday, John.

Our Easter Rally was at West Midlands Showground, Shrewsbury. A total of 43 vans came with visitors from South and West Wales, Lancashire, Severn Valley, Anglia and East Midlands. Jon and Elaine were our hosts with support from John and Jayne Flint. Wonderful sunny weather welcomed us all but this gave way to wet and windy conditions late on Sunday and into Monday.

Elaine greeted us with hot cross buns on arrival. In the evening our bingo caller was John assisted by Elaine. An Easter themed quiz with some anagrams followed. Jakob's table won. Many walked into Shrewsbury along the river path to go sight seeing or to enjoy refreshments in the many pubs and cafes. No doubt some retail therapy was included.

In the evening John entertained us singing some of Frank Sinatra's songs followed by karaoke. Jon and Elaine did a duet, John Crane did the Devil went down to Georgia before an amusing version of The court of King Caractacus with actions from Eileen. Beverley's Sisters ? were also among the artists. Many thanks to all who got up to have a go and make it a fantastic evening.

Sunday evening started with chocolate picture quiz accompanied by small Easter eggs to tease our brains. Joy, Maria and Paula won bigger chocolate eggs for their efforts. Jon and John hosted a Play your Cards Right game with cash prizes. The Take your Pick game had a range of prizes from £35 down to two boiled eggs. Well done to all the winners. The Easter Bonnet competition judged by Linda had two winners, Beverley and Darren. The raffle was drawn on Monday during coffee morning before many departed. A big thank you to everyone for supporting the rally and those who worked hard throughout especially Jon and Elaine.

Our special 60th anniversary is being held at Cockshutt Millennium Village Hall 16-19 June with two evenings of professional entertainment and catering. Ring Eileen 07932 651196 for further details. Payment secures the booking.

Hosts are still needed for 2023 rallies, so please speak to a committee member if you think you can help. Contact details for the rally officers, Jon and Elaine: email nwmnwrally@hotmail.com or mobile 07525 851394.

Upcoming rallies: 12-14 May at Bramblewood Caravan Park, Brown Moss, Whitchurch, Shropshire, SY13 4BU.

To book ring Rally Officers as above. 25-30 May is the National Rally at Malvern. 16-19 June at Cockshutt Millennium Village Hall, Shrewsbury Raod, Cockshutt, Ellesmere, SY12 0JE. 60th anniversary Rally. Please book and pay Eileen as above.

SCOTTISH

First rally this month was at Cairnsmill, St Andrews with seven Scottish vans and five visitors from Northern Counties. We celebrated Bill Campbell’s 80th birthday and Ian and Sandra Simon’s 49th wedding anniversary. Socials were held Friday and Saturday nights with quizzes and games and were enjoyed by all. We welcomed back Bill and Irene Hanby to the group and awarded Alan and Sara Murray a plaque for the first time they attended a Scottish group's rally.

Next rally was at Larick Campsite, Tayport. Ten vans were there, six from Scotland and four from Northern Counties. We had a social Tuesday night with a quiz and lots of chatting. Thursday 16 people went for a meal at Cobbies Inn, judging by all the clean plates the food was excellent.

Booking for the rally at Knockdhu distillery 19-21 May is now open. Spaces are limited. JanB

SEVERN VALLEY

Hello everyone, we are well into spring and moving into summer with lighter nights ahead and hopefully plenty of sunshine. Our Easter Rally was at Orleton Village Hall near Ludlow and was hosted by Richard and Kirstie Lamberton, Karen and Ian Sheers. It was attended by 33 vans, one from Chiltern, one East Midlands, one NWM&NW, two Avon, one Nene Valley and 26 Severn Valley.

On Good Friday we settled in and enjoyed the good weather, some members enjoyed a stroll to the local pub. The evening began with a meet and greet in the hall followed with games of bingo and singo bingo.

Saturday began with bacon baps; some members went into nearby Ludlow or Leominster followed on Saturday afternoon with an Easter cake competition, with numerous wonderful and delicious cakes. Our winner was Tina, with Pat as runner up and Jenny came third. Well done to everyone who took part. We then enjoyed tasting them all with tea and coffee. The evening was a 60s fancy dress with music and more games of singo bingo and Play Your Cards Right.

Kirstie and Karen arranged an Easter egg hunt around the village on Sunday morning which was won by Karen Chmiel, followed by a delicious, special two-course Easter Sunday lunch, prepared and cooked by our resident Gordon Ramsey, AKA Jeremy, and assisted by Jo, Richard, Sandy, Amanda, Karen, Kirstie, Shaun, Ian, Chris and Stewart. All plates were emptied and bellies filled.

SWP

Hello everyone. Now that the clocks have gone forward, let’s hope we soon get better weather to be able to enjoy the lighter evenings.

There are a couple of updates to the 2023 rally programme to tell you about, as follows:- July 27-30 (4 nights). Boconnoc Steam Rally bookings are required by the steam organisers well in advance of the event, therefore booking will open on 12th June and close on 10th July and not as stated in the rally programme sent out to you last December. August 16-20 (4 nights). Stithians Sail and Steam rally pitch fees are £12 pupn (no EHU) and Mel has negotiated to keep the entry to the steam rally at the special price of £5 per person each day.

Our second rally venue was due to be held at Camping Caradon, Looe. However on 6th March we received a communication advising of new ownership and that the previous owners were not continuing on site as part of the deal and that all bookings were temporarily suspended. A few phone calls were made and Tencreek site at Looe was booked in its place. We all have our likes and dislikes – even rally venues – and committee member, Shirley Lulham, stepped in as the host. Here is her report.

Despite a wet and windy start to our stay it was great to get out and about in our vans again and meet up with friends, old and new. We had 16 vans (one Severn Valley, two West Country, 13 SWP). We welcomed several new members to our Group and hope to meet up again very soon.

Most ralliers managed to dodge the showers and walked, bussed or taxied into the neighbouring towns of Looe and Polperro. Some even managed a swim in the indoor pool. The site provided our entertainment in the evenings, starting with bingo, and I am pleased to say that some of our members were lucky winners; followed by various artists serenading us through the evenings.

On Sunday we announced the winner of the picture quiz and held a raffle. Sadly then we all had to pack up and go home. Thanks to Shirley and all who braved the weather!

Hosting, which can be shared or split between hosts, is required for Watergate Bay rally TR8 4AD, June 20-5 July.

Upcoming rallies: 10-15 May at Little Winnick Touring Park, PL26 6DL. Fingers crossed for the Sausage Sizzle. 2-5

S&W WALES

Hello everyone, I am happy to report that, at last, we have had some fair weather and I hope it will continue for our forthcoming rallies. There is nothing better than being able to sit outside our vans in the sunshine with good company.

16-20 March at Dunvant Rugby Club – The weather forecast for the weekend undoubtedly put many members off but 12 vans were present including Ian Hamilton from the Avon Group. Hosts Sue and Keith were joined by first time hosts Catherine and Kevin, well done to all.

The rugby club made us very welcome; on Saturday the rugby was on afternoon and evening with a good atmosphere in the lounge even though we heard none of the commentary over the din! The catering van outside all afternoon was recommended with good food well priced.

Sunday morning was dry enough for a coffee morning outside with Brenda and Sid winning the lucky van. A big thank you to Carol Hamilton for the delightful Easter chicks she had knitted in aid of the Air Ambulance.

31 March-2 April at Danyrogof – Our hosts, Michaela and Martin with first time hosts Adrian and Trish, welcomed 25 vans to this stunning site. They included two Nene Valley regulars, and first timers Heidi, with six-year-old twins Penny and Harry, David and Emma Buck, Geraint and Alex Buck with two-year-old twins Iestyn and Ieuan.

On Saturday morning the weather was beautiful, encouraging many to go walking without waterproofs, the result was some wet ralliers when there was a very unexpected heavy shower in the afternoon. Many visited the stunning caves, dinosaur park and farm, all of which are very impressive.

On Sunday it was dry but cold for the coffee morning; we wished Karen and Clive a happy 55th wedding anniversary and Aled a happy 40th birthday. Trish gave the answers to the Dinosaur Quiz, there was the usual raffle and first timer Heidi won the lucky van before we returned to our warm vans for the journey home. Well done to our hosts.

6-10 April at Hi Tide, Porthcawl – For this Easter rally we were in the ‘Green Bowl’ area of the campsite where our hosts Sue and Keith, with first time hosts Keith and Alex, easily parked up 66 vans. They included first timers Yvonne and Dave Marriott, 10 Avon, five Severn Valley, two Nene Valley, one West Wessex, one Chiltern and two West Wessex vans.

Over the weekend most walked into Porthcawl town, around the coast or across the beach daily although the beautiful weather soon turned cloudy with a chill wind but this was not enough to deter the ralliers. In the evenings some sampled the entertainment on offer at the Hi Tide or several of the pubs in town. Some of our brave youngsters even went swimming, thank goodness their mum, Ceri, insisted they wear their wetsuits.

At 5.30pm on Saturday we gathered for a coffee evening where our hosts served us hot cross buns. Our Chair, Betty, wished Martin a happy birthday and gave him a card signed by all and our Rally Officer, Keith, updated on the programme – Chepstow is now bookable and if numbers allow he will book live entertainment in the clubhouse. He also appealed for hosts for the St.Davids rally so help if you can please.

There was an Easter Bonnet parade with the youngest entrants being our 2 year old Buck family twins who paraded with their grandparents; the winner was presented with a bottle of bubbly; well done to all entrants, especially the children.

The lucky van prize, a gigantic Easter egg, was won by Kathryn Clark and Michaela’s special Air Ambulance fundraiser of an enormous bag of chocolate goodies was won by Peter for a delighted Sabbi. It was a large raffle and thanks to everyone who donated for our charity. A big well done to our hosts.

Upcoming rallies: 18-22 May at Hereford Rowing Club, HR4 0BE. Riverside site close to city centre. Starts 2pm. 31 May-6 June at Aberystwyth Rugby Club, SY23 1HL. A popular site with short, level walk to town and seafront. Starts 12noon. 22-26 June at Chepstow Rugby Club, NP16 5UP. New rally site. Starts 2pm. Now bookable. Live entertainment if enough numbers. 6-11 July at St.David’s Rugby Club, SA62 6BP. New rally site. UK smallest city in stunning area. Starts 2pm. Hosts needed please. 27-31 July at Ysgol Cymraeg, Caerphilly, CF83 3HG. Starts 12noon.

For all bookable rallies please contact our rally officer on 07791 524227 or keithjhoward17@gmail.com – note corrected phone number.

SUSSEX

March brought us promises and threats of the Beast from the East. It certainly hit some of Sussex and if not with the white stuff then definitely with some pretty fearsome winds and rain. However, all those who'd booked for our return to Selsey at Seal Leisure decided it was worth the risk of bad weather to get back on the road.

Marilyn, Dave, Gordon and myself arrived early fully kitted out to site our 33 members' 'vans in the wind and rain... only to find that the team at Seal Leisure had allocated all the pitches and were there in force to site us all up. That was the start of a magnificent Seal Team effort and all the staff were helpful and friendly, making our venture 'into the unknown' an extremely pleasurable experience. The underfloor heating in the shower block was a certain bonus, as was the ability to be able to include the few who were on the reserve list due to a few members falling foul to colds, flu, covid, etc. We hope you are all feeling much better now.

It was great to see so many members and welcome to Sussex for the first time George & Susan, Martin & Anne, Tony & Jo, John & Claire, Gavin & Jan, Kate & Maurice. Mostly we all pleased ourselves, some went into Selsey, some toured the site on the shuttle bus, some stayed >>

May 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 35 MOTOR CARAVANNER 35 GROUP NEWS

around the 'vans to socialise and some went into one of the many bars to have a 'jar' or two, so despite the weather everyone had a very good time.

The entertainment on Friday and Saturday was well worth the trip (by shuttle bus) to the Seal theatre. The torrential rain on Sunday night kept most of us in our 'vans for an early night or a 'necessary' tipple with friends. On Sunday morning we managed to secure a room to allow for the Chairman's Chat after which lots of us decided to stay on in the Lido Bar for a large breakfast or an excellent carvery Sunday lunch.

Our next rally will be held at Easebourne GU29 9AG for the Coronation weekend on 5-8 May. We will be showing the Coronation on the large screen and hope you'll join in with bunting, table decorations, etc. Keep an eye on our FB page for booking your place via Marilyn with a holding deposit. Limited spaces at this one but all welcome.

I look forward to hearing from you if you are joining us at the National and please let me know if you are entering the Homecraft.

We are still looking for hosts for 8-12 June at Wildheart. Remember no hosts = no rally. Carole

WEST COUNTRY

Unity Farm, Brean, 21-26 March. We all had a great time for our first ever rally at Unity Farm in Brean. We had some wet days and some really windy days and nights , I think a lot of us were rocked to sleep and some suffered from motion sickness due to the high winds on Friday night.

But we all made the most of the time away, some of us went into Burnham On Sea or to Western-super-Mare or took a stroll along the beach at Brean.

We met in Breakers pub on Tuesday for our meet and greet where we were introduced to our hosts and told what was happening for the rally and in the evening at Breakers we could play bingo and a quiz. Wednesday and Thursday evenings we could pop along to Breakers for a pint and a game of bingo. Then on Friday and Saturday night in the club house for bingo and live entertainment.

We were joined by 37 vans: six from West Wessex; 10 from Avon; one from Severn Valley; five from SWP; one from East Wessex; and 14 from West Country. We all hope that you had a great rally and that you will join us for next rallies which is: Warcombe Farm on 16-21 May and Bundu Caravan Site 7-11 June.

WEST WESSEX

Our next meet is a joint meet with East Wessex at The Beehive, Bradford on Avon, BA15 1UA from 18-23 May (West Wessex host is Maria on 07887 393137. East Wessex host is Brenda). This is a very popular venue with basic facilities. It is a few metres from the canal path, which goes to Bradford upon Avon in one direction and Hilperton and beyond in the other. There are bus stops at the entrance to the site and Sainsbury’s supermarket is within walking

distance. There are plenty of places to eat, drink, shop or just sit and watch the world go by on the canal bank.

The National at Three Counties Showground, WR13 6NW, takes place from 25-30 May. From 3-10 June we will be at Bridport Football Club, DT6 5LA. This basic site has a riverside footpath into town. Saturday is market day in Bridport. The clubhouse is open, with the bar, darts, skittles, pool table and showers available. Please ring or text Judy and Roy 07831 420815 to book.

Later in the month from 22-28 June our rally is at Weymouth Rugby Club DT3 5HZ, hosted by Andy and Gill (07746 05860). Please see the West Wessex website or our Facebook page for full details and directions to all future rallies, which are now bookable. We still need hosts for rallies this year so please consider volunteering to host or assisting.

YORKSHIRE

Thank you to Paul for stepping in whilst I was away enjoying the sun. Skipton Auction Mart on 10th March had 11 vans (one Lancashire, two Northern Counties, two East Midlands, one NWM&NW and five Yorkshire). The snow seemed to keep quite a few people away. It was hosted by Malcolm and Carol. Saturday night was a onesie night, evidence of the guilty parties attached. Thanks to Carol for providing mental stimulation in the form of quizzes/ Dingbats on both evenings.

Marsden Cricket Club rally on 24th March was fully booked with 20 vans in attendance, including one Northern Counties and one Anglia. The weather was mixed with strong winds on Friday; Saturday was a day of showers and sunshine, keeping fine in the afternoon for a few of the members to walk down into Marsden to explore and have a bite to eat at the local hostelries. The evenings were spent in the club house enjoying a catch up with friends and to test our grey cells various quizzes and Dingbats were supplied by our hosts Gill and Steve.

Upcoming rallies: 1-4 June at Malton & Norton RUFC YO17 7EY. 9-12 June at Kay’s Barn YO19 5JZ (joint rally with Northern Counties). 16-18 June at Bilton Park Village Farm, Harrogate HG1 4DL (Bookable). 22-26 June at Pickering Recreation Club YO18 7DB (Bookable). 30 June-2 July at Langlands Garden Centre YO43 3PN (Bookable).

The REAL BRAINER

To use modern 21st century parlance, the carriage of bicycles by motor caravans should be a real no brainer. Acting as extendable transport to motorhomes and campervans, the advantages of having bikes with you far outweigh the inconveinience of loading them into the motorhome. But what are the pros and cons and what needs to be considered before you abandon four wheels in favour of just two?

There are times when bringing a motorhome into a village can be problematic; narrow streets, small parking spaces and height

no

restricted car parks can, at times, be frustrating. How easy then to park the van at the campsite, unload the bikes and cycle in to enjoy all there is to offer without the hassle? Technology and a modern, more thoughtful approach to bicycle design, has made the carriage of bikes by motor caravans so very much easier than has been the case in the past. There was a time when heavy upright bikes were simply too big to load inside a van. Advances in electric drives, lightweight alloys, folding designs and cycle carriers, have changed so much in recent years that many

of the old arguments no longer hold water.

Electric bikes

There was a time, for example, when only the young and fit were seen astride a bicycle. Electric, or e-bikes, have opened this mode of transport to a whole new audience, many of whom fall within the motorhome owning demographic. Figures show that in the 1980s and 1990s, before the boom in e-biking caught on, bicycle riding was mostly practised by people younger than 35. Today most e-bike riders are between 40 and 70 years old, with 25 to 35-year-

olds quickly closing the gap as more and more of them learn the benefits electric bikes offer. People are using e-bikes for many reasons, but mainly for recreation, health, transportation or to run errands.

Power assisted bicycles now represent 6% of all bicycle sales in the UK and are up almost 60% year-on-year.

E-bikes give riders the ability to flatten hills and make longerdistance bike rides much more manageable, all while still reaping many of the health benefits that go along with pedalling a traditional bicycle. You get the power to choose just how much effort you put in!

Format

Far from being a modern innovation, the concept of a bicycle that folds is not new. Some first models were developed in the early 1900s and were used in the Great War, providing transport to British soldiers because of their portability and easy maintenance. Generally, people started taking an interest in foldable

alternatives in the 1970s. Today they are seen as desirable because they are both practical and can be stored easily and safely.

Detractors suggest their smaller wheels are not suitable for rough roads and potholes and that the limited gear range offered means hills can be challenging.

It is true folding bikes offer a bumpier, stiffer ride compared to other non-folding bikes. The reason mainly comes down to tyre sizing. Folding bikes have a wide range of wheel sizes from 10 inches up to 26 inches. The most popular tyre sizes for folding bikes are 16, or 20 inches. When considering tyre size, it pays to remember that smaller tyres suffer more road resistance than larger ones.

Remember too, that folding bikes generally place riders in a more upright position and this is not ideal for speed because of wind resistance. Many critics suggest folding bikes are not as good for long rides as regular sized bikes or electric hybrid machines. But this accusation can be equally levelled at single speed or fixed gear bicycles in much the same fashion. It is not a question of comfort but more of gearing efficiency and road stability >>

at higher speeds.

By far and away the best argument in favour of adding a folding bike over a regular one to a motor caravan inventory is storage. Kept inside the van, a bicycle is out of sight and less prone to theft. It will generally not need to be cleaned before riding and is less susceptible to damage from the elements or passing traffic. It is perhaps here that the motorhome can win out over a campervan given the larger internal space and the fact that many have side opening storage or garages.

Because we drive a campervan and could not easily store our GoCycles inside, we carried them unfolded on a tow bar

no longer a requirement, we quickly reasoned that it would be better for us to have full sized bikes with chunkier tyres better suited to the tracks and tow paths we prefer to ride on. We sold our GoCycles and purchased two Como 5 SL Turbo e- bikes made by Specialized. So, the question you must ask might well be; to fold or not to fold, but the answer lies in the fact that each bike type has its advantages and benefits. The best bike for you will be the one that suits your own needs. So, our advice would be to take time to define your needs and then look for the most suitable bicycle to fulfil them.

Weight

Most e-bikes weigh more than conventional bicycles. While a bicycle weighs around 15kg, the average electric bicycle weighs between 20 and 30kg. E-bikes are obviously heavier because of the motor and battery; the motor can weigh between 4-5kg and a battery adds, on average, another 2-3.5kg. Not all e-bikes are that heavy. The Gocycle for example weighs 17.6kg, the MiRider 17.3kg. But both are small wheel folding machines designed for commuter use. Our own Specialized Como 5 SL Turbo is a full-

sized machine made of aluminium and weighs in at 21kg.

Weight is an important consideration for motor caravanners. Many drivers of motorhomes have licenses capped at 3,500kg and cannot drive vehicles of a greater gross weight than that. Handling the bike onto or off a rear-mounted bicycle carrier is another factor to be considered.

Carriers

When storage of bicycles inside motor caravans is not an option, the only solution is the outsidemounted bike carrier. Once again motorhome owners have scored over campervan owners in that generally speaking, they can carry such racks on the rear of their back door-free vehicles. Campervans with rear opening doors have, in the past, been hampered because the marketing of rear-mounted bike carriers has been aimed directly at >>

car owners. Owners of vans with barn doors have, until very recently, had no other options than to buy one and remove the backs from the racks in order to access the doors. True, small campervans have the option of carrying bicycles on the roof but, generally speaking, such roofs are pop top versions meaning bikes must be taken off the top before the roof is raised. Until now the only swing away racks available have been those made by jobbing engineers who have, over

the years, made them up in ones or twos and sold them by word of mouth. They were, for the most part cumbersome, heavy, expensive and downright ugly. But now, suddenly, a slew of mainstream accessory manufacturers have realised there is a market for a swing away bike rack. One that allows barn doors on campervans to be opened without first de-racking the bikes.

Sawiko, part of the AL-KO group, have launched their Trigo bicycle carrier designed to fit onto Fiat,

Peugeot or Citroen panel vans. This swing away system can carry up to three e-bikes and has a load rating of 80kg. Their Futuro E-Lift carrier is even smarter, in that its bike deck drops down to road level for easy bike loading and then rises automatically using a remote control. A third swing away carrier is their Agito, that can carry cargo up to 120kg, meaning you can carry a motor scooter or motorbike on the back. Witter, part of the Westfalia Automotive group, have

also launched their Receiver Hitch, a modular system, to which can be fitted a wide range of attachments, including what they call a 'swing out tow bar' onto which you can affix a standard bike carrier. And now we can exclusively reveal that Thule are working on their own version of a swing away bike carrier especially conceived for owners of campervans with barn-opening doors. When they do that, we will be first in the queue because, as we said at the beginning of this feature; It’s a real no brainer!

ROYAL DEE HUMBLE DON and

With an eclectic mix of rolling hills, open farmland, towering mountains, sweeping beaches, coastal cliffs and panoramic skies, Aberdeenshire offers a great deal for touring motor caravanners keen to explore Scotland. Aberdeenshire stretches from the Banffshire coast in the north, all the way around to St Cyrus National Nature Reserve in the east and encompasses Royal Deeside and the less well visited, often overlooked Donside area. With an abundance of beautiful coastlines, pretty seaside towns, rugged cliffs and sandy bays, this part of Scotland has hundreds of attractions and hidden gems that can be visited in touring motor caravans. With visits to old whisky distilleries, fantastic parklands, ancient castles, sparkling rivers and more than a fair share of cake and coffee shops, this is almost the tale of two rivers.

Some may say there is a brotherly rivalry between those who live, work, and play on the river Dee with those who do the same on the banks of the river Don. Deesiders are quick to point out that it was their area that captivated Queen Victoria who fell in love with its distinctive blend of moody mountains, lofty crags, tumbling rivers, moors, and forests. Donsiders, on the other hand, maintain that Deeside gets all the glory and most of the tourist dollars. They say it is their less well travelled roads that are the real motor

caravanning gems. From the stark slopes of the Lecht in the Cairngorms National Park, to the rolling patchwork of Tillyfourie, Donside has a rich agricultural history and farming is still a major industry hereabouts, with a wealth of local produce to be enjoyed.

Unmoved by the protestations of either school of thought, we visited both and enjoyed the experiences hugely. The rarefied Royal air still pervades the neat Deeside chocolate box towns and villages, such as Banchory, Ballater and Braemar, which are unsurprisingly thronged with motor caravanners in the summer season. We stayed at the Aboyne Loch Caravan Park, gloriously set on the shores of the eponymous waterside. From here, we were able to visit Balmoral Castle and the village of Braemar, famous for its Highland Gathering considered by many as Scotland's best. In Ballater, we >>

played a game of 'spot the warrant' (proudly displayed by the local shops showing they supply goods to the Castle). Don’t forget to stop by the tourist information and Visitor's centre housed in what was once the town's Royal train station. Take cake and coffee on the platform besides a replica of the Carriage that Queen Victoria used.

There is much to do here because Deeside offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities such as walking, biking and wildlife watching. Drive to a car park close by the Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve in the late afternoon and stay there overnight. Make a small donation to the upkeep of campervan facilities offered there. Next morning, before the crowds arrive, enjoy the reserve's most spectacular feature. The Burn O’ Vat is a vast bowl of pink granite, scooped out by a river flowing underneath glaciers, that covered the land some 20,000 years ago. Clambering inside it is a real adventure and we challenge you to do so without getting your feet wet!

We particularly enjoyed riding the Deeside Way, a cycle path that runs along what was the track of an old railway line that ran from Aberdeen to Ballater. We were testing out a pair of MiRider electric bikes, but if you do not have bikes on board, fear not, you can hire both conventional and electric bicycles in Ballater right

beside the station. Make a stop halfway along the track to watch cheese making at the Cambus O’May cheese shop and take the time to enjoy yet more cake and coffee.

Leaving Deeside, we made our way to Donside. Alford, on the banks of the winding River Don, is a growing rural town offering access to a range of activities and amenities, as well as making a fantastic base to explore the area. We stayed at Haughton Holiday Park, a family run site offering self-catering accommodation, static holiday homes, as well as a selection of serviced pitches for touring motor caravans. Somewhat neglected by previous mangers, the park is now under new and enthusiastic control. Shona and her son Ross Cooper have recently taken on the responsibility and are slowly, but surely, turning this great stopover into a truly magnificent one.

Donside is heralded as the birthplace of the world-famous Aberdeen Angus cattle breed. This fact celebrated by ‘Jeremy-Eric’, a life-size statue of a bull on the outskirts of Alford. We dare you to eat one and then not buy packets of bacon to fry up back at the campsite.

Just around the corner from their café, a visit to Alford Heritage Museum can tell you more about the history of farming and rural life in and around Donside. Housed in what was the original livestock market, the museum is a treasure trove of memories. This virtual time machine

should not be missed! Neither should you miss the award-winning Grampian Transport Museum, which is also close by. Park outside the museum in a spacious car park and explain you are members of the Motor Caravanners 'Club seeking to spend time in the museum and they will let you camp overnight in their grounds for free. Once inside the museum, spend time exploring while finding out about transport of the past, present and future. Our favourite exhibit was the Bedford CA Dormobile Romany, a motor caravan dating back to 1963.

In search of more history, we headed northwards to Keith in search of a kiltmaker. On the way we passed through Dufftown, a vibrant and thriving Highland village that styles itself the malt capital of Scotland. Situated on the banks of the rivers Fiddich and Dullan, and at the foot of the Conval Hills in the heart of Speyside, this small market town is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Dufftown is the central point on the whisky trail around the glens of Speyside. The town is the biggest exporter of whisky in Britain, and you'll find plenty of evidence with lots of distilleries around town, such as Glenfiddich, the largest of the lot. Aberdeenshire’s coastline should not be overlooked. Not just for its natural beauty, but for its “strong community feeling”.

The county has a rich bounty of beautifully preserved heritage harbours with rich histories of Baltic trade and herring fleets. Here, fishing villages perch on clifftops, while others crouch precariously at the water’s edge.

Stonehaven is a favourite of ours, a boardwalk filled with artwork and

Textile Centre has access to over 1000 Clan and District tartens. A good kilt and accessories can cost well over £1,500 and, “Making a kilt of your own,” says kilt tutor, Linda Gillies, “Is just the first step in creating a priceless family heirloom that will last for generations.” Having found our kiltmaker, it was now time to find a bagpipe maker! In Turriff, we found Bill Hepburn hard at work not making bagpipes but, as his trade suggests, making pipe bags. Using skins from sheep, goats or even sometimes, pigs, Bill creates the essential wind bag, that every piper needs to play his tune. Bags last just a year or two and that keeps Bill rather busy.

Proving that the National Trust does not have a monopoly on castles open to the public, the privately run Delgatie Castle in Turriff is a gem of a place to visit. This historic castle dates from around 1030 and has a rich heritage intertwined with Scotland's history. The home of the late Captain Hay of Delgatie, Feudal Baron, this bastion has largely been in the Hay family for most of the last 650 years since it was taken from the Earl of Buchan in 1314, after the Battle of

Bannockburn, when Robert the Bruce overwhelmed the invading English army. Today the castle is kept just as it was when Captain Hay was alive and in order that his life’s work would continue, the captain made the castle and the surrounding estate, into a non-profit making charitable trust which came into being upon his death. The Delgatie Trust now continues to maintain and upkeep the castle for the future. In what was the Laird's Kitchen, the castle’s pretty tearoom, has deservedly won a 'Taste of Scotland’ award from the Scottish Tourist Board. The lovely food and homemade scones are a delight and are all freshly made in the castle kitchen. In a country famed for coffee and cake, we must admit this was perhaps the finest example we had sampled to date.

the “Stonehaven Banksey” make this a delight to stroll along. If you have the energy, stride it out and take in ancient coastal sites the likes of Dunnottar Castle. If lunch is on the menu, we recommend eating fish and chips at The Bay and finishing with ice cream from Auntie Betty right next door. A large car park makes this a good choice for motor caravanners. The real gem is,

however, Laurencekirk which turns out to be a real foodie haven. Check out Charles McHardy, the butcher’s shop, and be sure to ask for black puddings made by Innes Kelly. They are delicious. Gannets on the High Street is the place to stop for lunch, but call in at any other time for yet more cake and coffee.

Flora the explorer

Teenagers are not keen on being thrust into the spotlight, as I found out when we picked up our bright yellow VW retro camper van.

But my 13-year-old daughter Flora, aka Flossie, softened a little when she discovered the cute box on wheels also had the same oldfashioned Scottish name.

And after a weekend in her company, Flossie was not only loving the toots and waves from fellow drivers as we toured the east coast of Scotland, but was sad too when the time came to say goodbye.

We picked up and dropped Flora off at the Port of Rosyth headquarters of Big Sky Campers, just outside Edinburgh. Run by enthusiast Rob Dawkins and his better half Alexandra, the firm is ideal for people who want to explore Scotland, but with the independence of going at their own pace.

Rob certainly knows his onions, having owned and used camper vans since being introduced to the delights as a child. From modern top of the range VW T6.1 Highline automatic vans and manual T6 VWs, to classics like Flora and her wee pal Dougal, Rob and Alex

provide accommodation on wheels for all types of journeys.

Helped out by Rob’s cousin George, the trio not only make sure the vans are squeaky clean and mechanically sound, but also help plan routes.

We had decided not to go too far and so after an hour and a bit, we arrived at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park, just outside Dunbar. Situated in the John Muir Country Park, this top of the range facility is literally yards from the beach and home to the "bridge to nowhere", an optical illusion depending on the tide.

Part of the Meadowhead Parks, which has three stunning parks

on the east coast of Scotland and one in nearby Northumberland, Belhaven is a real beauty and prides itself on not only on being a well set out facility, but having friendly staff and a modern and very clean toilet and shower block.

The park caters for caravan holiday homes, wigwam glamping, touring vans and tents, plus a seaside cottage which can sleep up to 6. Everything is well spaced out, with plenty of fresh water and refuse areas.

Hooked up in a premier pitch, Flossie and I soon found our way around Flora and we were particularly impressed by her camper van designed curtains.

Off we went, with the first stop at Amisfield Walled Garden on the outskirts of the attractive town of Haddington. Dating back to the 18th century, it is one of Scotland’s largest walled gardens and is being developed as a community garden by volunteers.

On our way back to Dunbar, we took a detour to the upmarket seaside town of North Berwick, also home to the Scottish Seabird Centre and Bass Rock, which has the world’s largest colony of Northern gannets and can be seen via hi-tech equipment on land or up close via a boat trip.

Dunbar is the birthplace of the explorer John Muir, and his former home is now a museum dedicated to his work, which included the creation

of Yosemite National Park in 1890. The three-floored and free museum is a wee gem and just across the road outside the town hall, there is a statue in honour of Muir.

Just a few minutes from the campsite is the East Links Family Park, where everyone can blow off a bit of steam and enjoy the animals and outdoor attractions, or for the more adventurous, a visit to the water sports Foxlake Adventures is a must, with wake boarding and aerial challenges over water among the highlights.

There is so much to do and see in this fabulous part of Scotland, dubbed the sunniest spot in the country, and so an ideal one to show off both Floras!

In this series of Tech Talk we will be looking at various sub-groups of fascinating motorcaravans and at some of their design features, all from an historical perspective. This month:

GOOD THINGS ARRIVE IN LITTLE PACKAGES

From the dawn of motorcaravanning to the present day, it has remained true that most converters can build a good palatial motorcaravan, but that it takes real skill and ingenuity to build one of Lilliputian proportions. One of the finest, if not the finest UK-based converter to manage to put a Quart into a Pint pot (1.136-litres into a 568-millilitre pot – for younger readers) is Wheelhome. Here is one of their Skampers [1] I had on extended live-in test back in 2009. All their

and retain access to the loo with the bed deployed. This one has Wheelhome’s clever side-extending elevating-roof.

The idea of a miniature motorcaravan is frequently said to have started in the early 1920’s by a movement of American enthusiasts who wanted more from their motor cars. Manufacturers such as the Tourist Supply Company provided folding kitchenettes that mounted on car running boards, and the Red Head Company offered ‘an

auto bed that was just dandy to sleep in’. However, my research indicates that it was a more famous group of Stateside campers that first came up with the idea, just after the end of World War 1. They consisted of folk such as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone, among others…no mention of accompanying ladies though! However, ladies were well represented in an offshoot a couple of years later, the famous ‘Tin Can Tourist’ organisation.

In the 1950s DIYers

In the 1950s DIYers started to convert small

estate cars and vans such as the Ford Squire and Morris Minor into ‘proper’ motorcaravans. The first Mini Motorhome produced commercially in any number was actually a conversion of the Austin/ Morris Minivan, by Bennets of Worthing, the Wildgoose. It was available in two body styles, one

with a front-hinged elevating roof [2] and the other with a VEB… vertically extending body [3]. John Hunt was one of the original Motor Caravanners’ Club members and the first editor of this magazine. He coveted a Wildgoose, but only had £100 to spend. Thus, he designed and built his own elevating-roof mini motorcaravan on a 3.5m (11’ 6”) Ford Thames 300E 5cwt van [4]. The accompanying illustration is a copy of a page he wrote for the club mag in 1964. He was also the founder and first editor of Motor Caravanner and Camper magazine, which became MMM. I had the pleasure of working alongside him, his daughter Penny Smith, and editor Mike Jago, at MMM for many years.

The increasing choice of Japanese microvans also found favour with converters notably

Island Plastics with their coachbuilt Romahome. Tech Talk will be looking at that in more detail next month.

PVCs and food truck conversions were also popular, one of which was the natty Nifty [5]. The best microPVC I tested was this Devon Hijetta [6] on a Daihatsu Hijet pictured in 1996. It generated more interest on campsites and at places of interest than any other `van I’ve tested, regardless of size or price…up to two million pounds!

In response to the Romahome’s runaway success, Elddis brought out the Nipper, and Autohomes launched the Bambi, both on Bedford Rascal. The pictured ‘chopped’ pedal-powered Bambi [7] was built by the extremelytalented Andy Saunders (sat in doorway) who used to be the proprietor of Kampers and Kars, based in Poole.

Fiat’s diminutive rear-engine 850/900 series gave rise to many conversions that sold in huge numbers. [8] is an advertising image of an early 1980’s Fiat Fargo, by Motorhomes International’

The unfairly-derided Reliant car company actually produced

significant game-changing vehicles, including the GRP Fox pick-up, to which Tandy Industries added their GRP rear-door coachbuilt body [9]. This is an early 1980s Goldcrest, the cheaper Firecrest didn’t have any overcab windows. The earliest Reliant motorcaravans I can remember consisted of the drivers’ basic removable DIY conversions of their three-wheel work’s van. Basically, a camp-bed and a Primus stove! Pictured is a 1949 Reliant Girder Fork delivery van [10]. These did more to get small businesses (such as bakers, greengrocers, and the like) moving pre and post WW2 than any other vehicle. Lots of new ideas are actually old ideas and [11] shows the Buffalino concept motorcaravan on a three-wheeled Piaggio delivery van 72 years after [10] rolled off the line. Currently there at least six Chinese manufacturers working on micro three-wheeled campervans ‘inspired’ by the Buffalino. They will all have zero-emission batteryelectric motive power.

Next month… We look at ‘pack-a-backs’ (demountable motorcaravans).

Instead, the failure had caused the door to drop. First job is to remove the temperature control and energy selector knobs by pulling them towards you. If they are difficult to get a good purchase on, use pliers or grips. Pad the jaws to avoid damaging the knobs.

DIY QUICK-FIX WORKSHOP

The door on our five-year-old Dometic RM 8400 fridge had become ever more difficult to close – until it wouldn’t at all – because the door had dropped so much. Gentleman Jack repairs a fridge door just hours before leaving for a trip…

62 MOTOR CARAVANNER May 2023 1
The eye-level fascia controlpanel had to be removed to reach the faulty component.
2 3
The problem was caused by a failure of the door moulding where the top hinge-pin locates. This should locate as photographed.
4
4b Next, release the two self-tapping screws located underneath the fascia panel. The left-hand one is under the gas-ignition analogue meter.

The right-hand one is underneath and just to the right of the gas-ignition button. Store them safely!

6

6b

On the top surface of the control-panel are two rectangular clips which should be eased upwards, whilst gently pulling the whole panel away from its mounting. Left hand one is pictured.

9

A machine screw of similar diameter as the hinge pin was employed. The end was wrapped with insulating tape, plus a smear of Vaseline as the releasing agent. The void was filled with Devcon 5-minute two-part epoxy-resin, though many other alternative adhesive fillers are available. It was filled to just below the top surface

10

When it had cured, a strengthening washer was bonded on top and additionally secured with two small selftapping screws. Here the door top is masked-up ready for painting the washer with etching primer and matt anthracite Rustoleum paint from the workshop. A small pot of Humbrol enamel is a good alternative.

Remove the meter – it’s just a push fit – and store the removed panel in the main body of the fridge.

Undo the top hinge-pin and release the door. The damage must be filled whilst retaining a hole for the top hinge-pin to locate-in.

11

Reassemble in reverse order, but check the security of the top hinge bracket. The bracket fixings are impossible to reach with a standard screwdriver, so use an offset one, such as these pictured. They are sometimes referred to as right-angled screwdrivers. Finally, ensure that the fridge functions correctly on all energy sources
