Welcome to Southwold...

Southwold seafront, March 27th 2023

This year, the RNLI is celebrating its 200-year anniversary and the Southwold Lifeboat Station at the Harbour will be arranging several events whilst the Southwold Sailing Club is also celebrating its 75th year and will be sponsoring events.

As Mayor of Southwold for 2023-2024 I would like to welcome you to our town. There are many points of interest within this town guide. Hopefully, the weather will enable you to enjoy the beach. The area by Southwold Pier was awarded the Blue Flag in 2023 which is an environmental award given to beaches throughout the world that achieve the highest standards of water quality and safety. The beach by the Pier and under Gun Hill is supported by lifeguards during the summer.

There is much for visitors to do in the town and surrounding areas. For sporting families, you can play the nine-hole golf course on the Common, (the golf club has also recently invested in the latest technology ‘Swing Room’). There are also tennis courts on Hotson Road and at the Pitstop. During the year, football, rugby, and cricket is played on the Common.

The High Street has a range of interesting shops to visit. In the town, there are over 30 different restaurants and cafés that meet all tastes for visitors.

There are plenty of activities at venues around the Pier; the Putting Green, the Amusement Arcade, the Model Yacht Pond (where you can watch and take part in racing events) and the newly upgraded Klondyke Skate Park.

One of the attractions for the town during the year is the Arts Festival, which will take place between June 22nd and 29th, 2024. There’s a full programme of events during the week which will culminate in the Street Festival on the 29th.

For the sailing and boating enthusiasts, the Harbour is also a unique experience with trips to sea with Coastal Voyager. The Walberswick to Southwold ferry is open between April to October and is a simple way to explore the area and cross between the two.

As well as its full programme of shows, lectures and Community Cinema throughout the year, Southwold Arts Centre will be hosting its Summer Theatre from July-September, in conjunction with Aldeburgh Theatre and the Literary Festival.

For those who’d like to climb the lighthouse, experience gin making, or

have a brewery/distillery tour, visit the Adnams Tours reception area behind the Swan Hotel or visit their website for booking information.

We have many wonderful local organisations and attractions which rely on volunteers and your support of these is much appreciated. Organisations which you’ll find more information about in this guide include the RNLI, Southwold Museum, Alfred Corry Lifeboat Museum as well as Southwold Arts Centre to name a few.

There are some lovely walks for all to enjoy! You can find out more about these by downloading the ‘Go Jauntly’ app for free from your App Store/Google Play Store, or by going on to the Go Jauntly website (www.gojauntly.com). The walks include a 1km walk around the High Street. Those who want to go further afield, there is a 3.6km circular walk which takes you around Southwold Common, acknowledged as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, through to the Harbour and over the town marshes where you may be lucky enough to see water voles, waders and wildfowl, finishing back at the Common.

I hope you enjoy everything that Southwold has to offer during your stay here. Whilst enjoying our town, we would ask all visitors to respect and protect our beautiful and delicate, natural environment, remembering to collect all your belongings and rubbish before you leave. Please visit again soon!

History of Southwold...

Nestled on the Suffolk coast, Southwold is a picturesque town with a history as captivating as its scenic beauty. Steeped in tradition, this charming seaside destination has evolved over centuries, leaving behind a rich tapestry of stories.

Throughout the centuries, Southwold has weathered storms, both literal and metaphorical. The town's resilience is evident in its well-preserved Georgian and Victorian architecture, which adorns the narrow streets and serves as a visual reminder of its historical significance. The Southwold Museum, housed in a former coastguard cottage, offers a fascinating glimpse into the town's past, showcasing artifacts and exhibits that span its diverse history.

Southwold's story begins in the distant past, with evidence suggesting human habitation in the area dates back to the Stone Age. However, it was during the Anglo-Saxon era that the town really began to take shape. Originally known as Sudwold, meaning ‘south woods’ in Old English, the settlement grew in importance thanks largely to its proximity to the River Blyth, which served as a vital trading route. Southwold was mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as a fishing port.

One of Southwold's most notable features is the Adnams Brewery, a cornerstone of the town's identity since 1872. The brewery has played a crucial role in shaping the community, contributing not only to its economic prosperity but also becoming a beloved local institution.

By the 15th century, it had become a prominent centre for the herring trade, with its wealth growing alongside its maritime activities. The town's iconic lighthouse, constructed in 1887, stands as a testament to its maritime heritage and continues to guide ships safely along the coast.

- 6 -

Southwold's scenic coastline has also played a pivotal role in its history. The sandy beaches and colourful beach huts have attracted generations of holidaymakers, contributing to the town's popularity as a seaside resort. Today, Southwold remains a favourite destination for those seeking a perfect blend of history, natural beauty, and traditional charm.

Promising future for Saint Felix School... I am thrilled to have recently taken on the role as the new Head at Saint Felix School, an independent co-educational day and boarding school for children aged two to 19, from Nursery to Sixth Form.

the school. With strong exam results and excellent value-added performances, our students go on to a range of highperforming universities across the UK and internationally, including Russell Group universities.

Having spent 25 years at Wellington College in Berkshire, the last 10 of which were in senior leadership positions, I am excited to take Saint Felix on the next stage of its journey. It is the most beautiful campus of 75 acres, where the natural beauty of our rural and coastal location enhances each student's educational and learning experience. It is a school where individualised and personalised learning takes priority, with small class sizes, excellent pastoral care and a wealth of opportunities to allow students to become independent and curious whilst developing their interests and passions.

Outside of the classroom, our students can partake in many clubs and activities where they will learn and develop new skills. Our new Forest School allows our younger learners to interact with the environment; they will understand its significance and how to take care of it for the future and take risks in a safe and secure setting. Our three on-site boarding houses provide a home-from-home experience for our boarding students. With full, weekly, and flexi boarding options, we welcome students from local, national and international locations.

Our broad curriculum offering enables great choice throughout their studies, with students able to prioritise their areas of strength whilst also ensuring a balanced provision that will prepare them for their future.

With an elite swimming programme, two new grass sports pitches, and further plans for the development of the Gym and Health and Fitness Suite taking shape, the future looks incredibly bright.

We are currently refurbishing all classroom areas across the Prep and Senior Departments to create dynamic and interactive learning spaces where students and teachers can collaborate in an environment conducive to discussion and debate, with modular furniture, writeable walls, and interactive screens. We have established a clear learner profile that outlines the skills, qualities, and attributes instilled in our students to ensure clarity and purpose throughout

If you feel that Saint Felix could be the perfect educational setting for your child, please contact Miss Jen Burch, our wonderful Head of Admissions, on 01502 727048 or email: admissions@stfelix.co.uk Matt Oakman, Head of Saint Felix
