CONVERTING VANS FROM CONCEPT TO COMPLETION
35 YEARS EXPERIENCE

Ihad my first early start of the year the other day, heading north for a launch before the sun had risen. It was a day of strikes across the UK, but the roads were just as packed as usual. What was really noticeable though, was that there were two types of vehicle dominating the carriageways at that time of the day, trucks and vans.

Ford’s Transit Custom was not just the UK’s best selling LCV last year, but for the second year running, was actually the best-selling vehicle in the UK of any type. Spend any time early in the morning on a major trunk road across Britain and you’ll see plenty of Customs carrying trades to work, along with every other make and model. Vans really do keep Britain moving.

However, to keep those vans running, particularly as we transition to electric power, there is going to have to be massive investment in charging infrastructure, if companies are going to operate in the same way. As our news analysis piece on a recent report from Mina shows, many of the growing number of battery-powered vans tend to stop to charge between 7-8am, while their drivers take on caffeine and breakfast. It would appear that the biggest beneficiaries of the move to EV, are going to be McDonalds and Greggs.

Van operators that are interested in new technologies and alternative ways of working, will have plenty of opportunity to discuss the many options on offer, with providers at shows throughout the Spring and Summer. From the Commercial Vehicle Show in April, ITT Hub in May and Road Transport Expo in June, companies will have the chance to see the latest vehicles and fleet operating systems in action across the UK.

We’ll be bringing you some preview news from the first of those shows in next month’s issue and trying to keep pace with the rapidly changing demands facing the light commercial vehicle sector.

Ford Pro stays at number one

Ford Pro recorded an eight consecutive year of market leadership in Europe, while the Transit Custom celebrated not only being the best-selling 1-tonne van, but also the highest-selling vehicle of any kind in the

UK last year. Ford has been UK van market leader for an incredible 57 years.

As part of a roll-out of new products and services, Ford Pro launched the E-Transit last year, attracting more than 1,750

Government consults on MOT change

The Department for Transport (DfT) has launched a public consultation looking at updating the annual MOT test for vans, cars and motorbikes. The proposal would see a vehicle’s first MOT carried out at four years, rather than the current threeyear test. It is also looking for views on the frequency of what is currently an annual test.

“The MOT plays a vital role in ensuring that vehicles on our roads are safe and well maintained and, while not a formal recommendation, we totally oppose any change from an annual MOT,” said Edmund King, president of the AA.

“With one in 10 cars failing their first MOT, we strongly discourage the government from extending a car’s first

MOT to the fourth anniversary, due to road safety concerns.”

Other measures in the consultation include the introduction of testing for pollutants such as particulates and NOx, to ensure diesel and petrol vehicles meet the requirement throughout their lifespan. It is also considering whether electric vehicle batteries should be tested, to improve the safety and reliability of EVs.

“There are aspects of this consultation which we support, such as ensuring the MOT is fit for purpose for the new technology in vehicles,” said King.

“Making sure the MOT testers check and test advanced safety features and autonomous systems are important as the nation’s vehicle parc evolves.”

UK orders by the end of 2022. The company also unveiled its integrated platform of vehicles, charging equipment, service and finance, to support the move to an electric van future.

CV manufacturing hits 10 year high

British commercial vehicle production grew by 39.3% in 2022, with 101,600 vans, trucks and buses rolling off the production lines. That is despite a slight downturn in December, due to continued problems in the component supply chain. This was the sector’s best performance since 2012 and was 29.8% up on 2019’s pre-pandemic production numbers.

Output for the domestic market rose by 14%, while export sales were up by 63.4%, with Europe the UK CV market’s biggest export destination.

“British CV manufacturing’s best annual performance in a decade is testament to the determination and agility of the sector, which continued to meet strong demand despite extremely challenging operating conditions,” said Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT.

“However, long-term success is contingent on the sector’s ability to remain competitive in the global race to net zero. Support to bring down soaring energy costs, encourage investment in zero emission technologies and equip our talented workforce with the right skills to deliver these vehicles, will be essential in keeping the nation and economy on the move.”

Demand for used vans stays high

Auction company BCA reported its busiest trading period on record in the period between Christmas and New Year, with customers competing for LCV stock. The company staged four days of sales over the festive period and, though prices fell slightly due to a change in model mix, they continued to remain strong.

“The overall picture from the LCV market during 2022 saw a return to more seasonal trading patterns as the constraints imposed by the pandemic eased. Whilst there were short spells during the year where supply and demand were not quite in sync, generally the wholesale LCV market remained well-balanced and average values in December reflected this,” said Stuart Pearson, BCA COO.

“Whilst the new LCV market continues to face the challenges of the ongoing supply chain issues and a shift towards alternative fuel-types, BCA’s online LCV programme continues to be the best and most reliable source of stock for professional buyers.”

Mercedes-Benz announces Citan pricing

Orders have opened for the latest diesel-powered Citan compact vans from Mercedes-Benz. The van will be available in L1 configuration from February, with the larger L2 models, a crew van and the electric eCitan joining the line-up later in the year. The diesel models will use a 1.5-litre engine, delivering 95hp and 260Nm of torque. This drives through a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Citan will be offered in two trim levels, though all models will come with heat-insulating glass, multi-function steering wheels, plus heated, electrically-adjustable side mirrors. All Citans also benefit from Active Brake Assist, Attention Assist, Hill Start Assist, a rear parking aid with reversing camera and six airbags.

Progressive trim vans will come with steel

wheels, while Premium models get alloys. Premium vans also come with body-coloured bumpers, a gloss black dash, a Dynamic exterior design package and metallic paint. The higher trim vans come with a Light package that includes LED headlights with main beam assist.

All Mercedes-Benz vans get a three-year, unlimited mileage warranty and free round-theclock roadside assistance. This is free for three years and then renewed every 12 months when the van is serviced at an authorised outlet. Mercedes me connectivity is also standard, offering real-time remote data. This includes overthe-air updates, access to vehicle monitoring, fuel levels, mileage and remote-door locking. With a payload around 666kg, the L1 Citan will start at £21,310.

Forty MANs for Johnsons

Johnsons Hotel Restaurant and Catering By Stalbridge, a provider of hotel and catering linens, has taken delivery of a fleet of MAN TGE vans, through Seven Asset Management, to operate across the UK. The 40 MANs are TGE 3.140 frontwheel drive, long wheelbase, high roof models, powered by a 140hp version of the VW 2.0-litre diesel engine. They have all been supplied with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission and the vans feature a

high specification, with air conditioning, multi-function steering wheels, a 6.5” colour display and reversing cameras.

“As our vehicles travel across the country, covering circa 70,000 miles annually, it’s imperative that we have the support of mature, trusted and customer focussed partners, and with Seven Asset Management and MAN we feel that we have exactly that,” said transport manager Philip Martin.

Van User: How was 2022 for Mercedes-Benz Vans?

Sarah Palfreyman: Our first year of recovery following the pandemic was not without challenges. We have seen customer demand outstrip supply, but on a positive note, more than 10% of Mercedes-Benz Vans sales were electric, compared to the average market proportion of around 6%.

We have also seen a positive performance in the used van market. The number of vans sold with our Mercedes-Benz Approved Used policy has grown from 35% in 2018 to 77% in 2022. We also saw a 10% growth in customers relying on our dealer workshops to keep their vehicles moving.

VU: How did your sales split in terms of model?

SP: Sprinter continues to be our top-selling vehicle, followed by Vito models. We are proud of the businesses our large, connected van has been able to support over the last few years, including emergency services, couriers and egrocery, local retail businesses and charities.

The new eSprinter is a big evolution for our large electric van. The model offers three battery variants –the highest of which achieved a real-world test drive of 295 miles.

However, we cannot ignore the trends, particularly the growing demand in smaller van markets. With the production of the new Citan and eCitan and our private van counterparts, the T-Class and EQT to launch in Spring, we expect to increase sales in this sector.

VU: All manufacturers have been struggling with supply, how was this for Mercedes?

SP: Production capacity, component supply and economic volatility are some of the challenges we and other manufacturers are still navigating. However, as we move into 2023, we are anticipating lead times to return to a more stable, familiar rate.

VU: How have sales of electric vans progressed and how do you see the UK electric van market?

SP: More of our customers are sharing our ambition to reduce their environmental footprint and ready themselves for an electric future. More than three-quarters (77%) of small businesses we spoke to in 2022 are implementing measures to reduce any negative impact on the environment. The majority (76%) are considering switching to an electric van.

Our results highlighted that, according to SMMT data, the eVito is the strongest-performing vehicle in the retail sector, with a share of 51%. With wider legislative and environmental factors, such as the 2030 Climate Target Plan and Euro 7 emissions standards, we foresee the EV market progressing positively.

VU: How important will the new eSprinter and the eCitan be to Mercedes-Benz Vans?

SP: The eCitan and new eSprinter will significantly increase our electric product offering and will enable us to help make EV a sustainable proposition for more customers. The eCitan will be our first electric small van, offering the benefits customers expect from Mercedes-Benz. That includes up to 30 years’ roadside assistance, (with out-of-charge cover), exemplary safety features, Mercedes me connectivity, a three-year unlimited mileage warranty and an eight-year battery guarantee. It will also bring a level of premium specification to the small electric van category. The new eSprinter is a big evolution for our large electric van. The model offers three battery variants – the highest of which achieved a real-world test drive of 295 miles. Our offering will include long-wheelbase and chassis variants, with power solutions for bodybuilders.

VU: Are you working with suppliers to provide charging infrastructure for e-van customers?

SP: Mercedes-Benz Vans is working with a range of suppliers, ranging from local dealer partners consulting on electric charging and home charger solutions, through to partners who can help depot and large-fleets electrify their operations. We are trialling these processes to electrify MercedesBenz retail sites, allowing us to test and learn before recommending to customers.

Mercedes-Benz Vans has a big year ahead, UK sales director Sarah Palfreyman talks exclusively to Van User
“More of our customers are sharing our ambition to reduce their environmental footprint and ready themselves for an electric future.”
EXCLUSIVE

Mercedes-Benz recently announced plans for a global high-power charging network across North America, Europe, China and other key markets, to support going allelectric by end of the decade. It will significantly enhance the usability and convenience of our brand’s electric vehicles, differentiate the Mercedes-Benz ownership experience and accelerate EV transformation.

VU: Are your dealers having to change the way that they work to meet the needs of customers?

SP: The automotive industry continues to undergo seismic change, of which electrification is just one factor. Together with our dealer partners, we have invested over £20m into our infrastructure and will continue to increase this spend in 2023 and beyond. Retail sites are being redesigned to ensure customers receive the same, premium experience across all our UK showrooms and training is being delivered to sales employees to make processes more consultative.

We want to ensure we understand our customer’s business and their specific needs, taking into account usage, range, payload, and charging opportunities, to deliver the best service. We also want to make sure our network is honest and transparent, in cases where EV isn’t right for a customer today.

We are rapidly expanding the number of EV technicians qualified to work on all aspects of a vehicle’s high voltage systems –from a routine service, all the way to battery replacement. This will ensure we can give Mercedes-Benz levels of service, even in an EV world.

We are optimising our MercedesBenz Van Online Showroom, which exists alongside our brick-andmortar dealerships. The platform gives customers the flexibility to make online reservations and payments, with hundreds of new and used vans in one place. Buying a van is one of the most important purchases small business owners will make, but we know from research that their time is valuable. 37% of businesses we spoke to said being able to buy a van online would save them time and 30% said it would be more efficient for their business.

VU: Will the UK van market be ready for the end of new petrol/ diesel sales in 2030 and how could government help?

SP: Whilst there are many challenges for the automotive industry to navigate, I am confident that many of them will be answered by improvements in vehicle technology, legislation and infrastructure before 2030. New products will answer challenges ensuring EV’s better match the

capabilities of a diesel van.

At Mercedes-Benz, in addition to the new eSprinter arriving later this year, the 4.25-tonne exemption is already helping EVs to become closer in terms of payload to their diesel counterparts. Within this decade, we will also have an all-new EV architecture called VAN.EA, which will help adoption further.

The introduction of local legislation, including Zero Emission Zones, will mean faster adoption in some areas. Nevertheless, infrastructure will need to be improved if an all-electric future is to be viable. From a public network standpoint, Mercedes is looking to play a part in improving this, but customers, particularly those who operate from depots, may need to invest heavily in order to switch their fleet.

There is an opportunity for the van industry to work together to consider what is needed for our community. Many public charging spaces are not large enough for a long-wheelbase electric van, particularly on-street. Not all van drivers have driveways, so we will be working with industry bodies and our customers to consider how fleets may need to change their operations to fit in with electric vans.

Other potential opportunities that could be explored include:

van.

• Setting minimum standards for charging facilities to take the needs of van drivers into account

• Additional grants or tax breaks for those businesses installing EV infrastructure at depots

• Standardise benefits for electric vans. For example, in some cities electric vans can use bus lanes and have subsidised parking

• Maintain grants for electric vans to help offset the higher production costs of batteries.

VU: How do you see 2023 for the van market and for Mercedes-Benz?

SP: 2023 will see the van industry launch a lot of new vehicles, including the Mercedes-Benz Citan, eCitan, T-Class, EQT, the new eSprinter and an eVito facelift. This growth in new vehicles should see the used van market settle down and continue the strong growth of electric vehicles. With more digital tools, like our Mercedes-Benz Vans Online Showroom, we can expect to see more customers researching, reserving or buying vans online.

CHARGING ANALYSIS

There is an odd narrative that is being promoted at present, that running an electric vehicle is no longer cheaper on a day-to-day basis than a diesel or petrol model. Indeed, if recent reports are to be believed, the rising cost of topping up with electricity, along with photos of Christmas holiday queues at charging stations, will see many consumers turning back to fossil fuels. For the vast majority of battery electric vehicle users, this simply isn’t the case, electric vehicles are here to stay and, if you charge wisely, there are running cost savings to be made.

“The claims that the cost of running an EV is now matching, or costs more than, petrol or diesel, are just not accurate when you look at how people actually charge,” said Ashley Tate, CEO of EV charging payment provider Mina.

“Our data shows that home is by far the main source of electricity for most drivers, with 92% of all charging undertaken there. Home charging is still incredibly good value and our data shows that there is scope for more savings, because the 30p per kWh average suggests not enough drivers are ac-

cessing the much lower EV-specific or offpeak tariffs available.”

Mina’s recently launched EV Report - Autumn 2022, shows that, despite stories to the contrary, charging costs rose only marginally over the last three months. Motorists charging at home have seen just a 4p per kWh average rise since the summer. Of course, those topping up batteries using public charging facilities saw a far higher increase in costs, as the price per kWh rose by an average of 14p over the same period and far more in some isolated cases.

“Even with the onset of winter affecting battery efficiency and the electricity price rises, the increasing number of new, more efficient vehicles and drivers getting smarter about how they use and charge them, has seen real-life, on-the-road costs rise only marginally. It doesn’t play to the vocal number of EV critics, but this is the reality,” said Tate.

Mina’s report is based on more than 60,000 charging sessions, recorded through the Mina Homecharge employee payment system and through its Chargepass public charging station payment offer. The figures

include both car and van drivers, which is important, as there is a difference between the two.

For instance, the average pence per mile (ppm) cost to charge a car, on home or public charging, is 9ppm, which is up 1p from last summer. The average cost to charge a van, on both public and private charging, is 13ppm, which is up 2p. This difference is in part due to the higher miles/kWh capability of most cars, compared to vans.

However, Mina says that at that rate, an electric van driver, covering 1,000 miles a month would spend £130. A diesel van offering 40mpg covering the same 1,000 miles, would cost £213 at £1.88 per litre. That’s £83 more, or £996 per year.

Tariff choice

Whatever the vehicle, Mina claims that there are ways to reduce the charging bill, particularly if home charging is a possibility. The company is currently recording more than 811 different electricity tariffs through its Homecharge system, costing anywhere from 5p to 63p per kWh. This demonstrates that there are plenty of offers out there if EV users look for them.

Many domestic energy suppliers now of-

fer EV-specific tariffs, using smart charging technology to ensure that vehicles are charged using off-peak electricity, at a lower cost. If a driver is charging a 60kW van battery on a standard domestic rate of 30p/ kWh, the total cost will be £18 each time it is topped up. On an EV-specific reduced rate of 5p/kWh, that drops to just £2.40 for a charge.

Planned charging

Where things can start to become expensive, is when companies are using public charging extensively, if drivers have no opportunity to charge at home or in a depot/office car park. While the average cost to charge a van at home is 13ppm, that rises to an average of 28ppm on public chargers and can go higher.

Mina’s research shows that the peak plug-in times for public charging are between 7-8am and then 8-9am. The next peak, though to a lesser extent, is between 11-12 o’clock. That means that electric

van users are stopping to charge while grabbing a coffee and a bacon roll before starting work, then catching a quick plug-in session over lunch.

While this may be working at present, as the number of electric vehicles increases, this will increasingly lead to waiting times at charging stations, which could affect working shifts for van drivers. Companies that regularly need a mid-shift boost, may need to plan charging stops for later in the day, when availability will be higher.

“Charging is going to become part of the working day for many and it needs to be integrated into workflows and schedules,” said Tate. “In order to do this effectively, you need to know when drivers have to stop. Once you’ve got this, you can make big improvements in productivity.”

The average van charging time on a public charger is now 57 minutes, 10 minutes longer than last summer. It should be noted that drivers often try to reach a 100% charge, which takes far longer than an 80% top-up, as to protect the battery the charging slows down for the final 20%. It may in fact be more productive to charge to 80% and then top-up again briefly later in the day if required.

Manufacturers are delivering increasingly extended driving ranges, mainly through the use of larger batteries, though they in turn take longer to charge. To make the most efficient, productive use of electric vans, operators are going to have to factor in charging, both time and cost, into the equation.

Corolla Commercial gets POWERBOOST

Toyota has updated the Corolla Commercial, just a year after the car-derived van was introduced, on the back of a major upgrade to the passenger car line-up. The revised LCV gets more power, a smoother drivetrain, an interior refresh and additional driver assistance technology. It also boasts improved economy and lower emissions.

While the passenger model is now offered with a choice of 1.8 and 2.0-litre engines, the Commercial sticks with the 1.8-litre petrol motor. This fifth-generation hybrid boasts an improved lithium-ion battery that despite being smaller and 14% lighter, boasts a 14% boost in output. In total, the hybrid driveline now pushes out a combined 138hp, a 14% rise on the previous model.

Despite that rise in power, Toyota is also boasting a fuel consumption improvement, with the Corolla now promising up to 64.2mpg and just 100g/km of CO2. It drives through a revised e-CVT transmission and

12 VANUSER • FEBRUARY 2023 LAUNCH | TOYOTA COROLLA COMMERCIAL

Power Control Unit, that have been tuned for reduced electrical loses. The transmission also behaves less like a conventional CVT, with acceleration now more closely tied to any rise in engine rpm.

The visual update is confined to some tweaked lighting and a slightly different front bumper, while inside the cab there is new seat material, a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel and a completely new

digital dash. Beneath the skin, the latest Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) system boasts a huge array of safety and driver assistance technology, all of which is included in the standard specification.

Emergency Steering Assist, Emergency Driving Stop System, Curve Speed Reduction and Intersection Collision with Lateral Collision Avoidance are usually the preserves of luxury car models, not vans, but

Toyota has happily decided that they make just as much sense for commercial vehicle drivers covering plenty of miles during their working day.

Indeed, the high ADAS count may well be a contributor to many of the vehicle’s early sales, as companies look both for a low-CO2 solution without going full electric and for a driving experience that will be welcomed by engineers and other travelling staff.

While a car-derived van will always be a small contributor to a company’s overall sales, Toyota Professional is gearing up for further success going forwards. The company recorded a 4.6% market share in the LCV market last year, its best to date. When the heavy Stellantis van joins the line up in 2024, the firm expects those numbers to keep on rising.

Traditionally, the Hilux pick-up has represented more than half of all Toyota LCV sales. By 2025 however, the company is expecting vans to take the lion’s share of LCV sales for the first time.

The firm’s dealers are preparing for this growth too, as they anticipate the heavy van line joining the range next year. Though all Toyota dealers can sell and service vans, 142 of the firm’s 181 outlets have now achieved Toyota Professional status, delivering an enhanced van offer. When that heavy model arrives, Toyota will have an enviable LCV range, including the car-derived Corolla, the 4x4 Land Cruiser Commercial, Hilux and a full range of vans. The company will also offer diesel, petrol hybrid and full electric drivelines, to meet the needs of a wide range of customers.

“We are about being able to provide as many different options to the customer as possible,” said LCV manager Gareth Matthews.

A Van Revolution Has Begun

The ubiquitous van has now become an essential part of everyday commercial life and as we head into 2023, SMUK is leading this four-wheeled revolution. Sometimes the obvious is staring everyone in the face but few see it, however, the company realised many years ago that there had to be a better way than throwing everything ‘in the back’, in the vain hope that it would be instantly available (and findable) on site.

That’s why SMUK, already the UK’s No1 in truck fleet safety systems, moved into utility van conversions seven years ago and today, with a turnover approaching £15m, the firm has three UK sites and 74 staff.

“We call them superior van conversions,” says MacDonald.

“Pretentious? Not at all because what we do is different. We give customers something totally bespoke to their needs. We are fanatical about getting it right first time!”

Creating a functional mobile work area is a must for on-site teams and these days, welfare vans can be equipped with a toilet, microwave, crew table, seating, phone, computer charging sockets or a raft of other addons including, quite literally, the kitchen sink.

“One size doesn’t fit all,” adds MacDonald, “and our experienced team of van designers and engineers spend days creating the perfect solution for each individual customer, whether they are buying one van or 100.” He recounts the earth-sampling company involved with HS2, the enormous project deliv-

ering enhanced rail capacity across Britain.

“Our client needed to complete soil tests at site, so we set about delivering a unique solution, creating mobile testing units on wheels – the perfect ‘lab’ van. They not only saved time and money, but meant the client’s teams could stay on site, delivering game-changing decisions for rail engineers in minutes rather than days.”

SMUK’s skilled team of engineers can offer clients a full turnkey solution, from the

purchase of vans to full CAD drawings, interior commercial designs, full fit-out including lighting and extra power sources and even branding graphics. You might even opt for digital recording equipment so that you have an ‘electronic’ witness in the event of an incident.

SMUK’s engineers design van racking systems to meet exact needs: from securely housing equipment, to providing tailored ‘in-van’ electrical solutions such as those from Clayton Power.

“With our products manufactured to a high quality, our performance systems are built to last, keeping equipment safe as vans move from site to site,” said van conversion divisional manager Tom Fenton.

“Initially clients get together with our planning experts in a discovering meeting. They talk, we listen, a plan is formulated, an initial solution proffered and feedback taken again. This repeats until a definitive solution is agreed. And only then do we start the conversions. That’s how we get it right at the point of production,” said Fenton.

The discovering meeting might cover the equipment, power source and type of racking required so that each solution is logical, convenient, legal and well-thought out. And, by using the latest digital printing and design technology, SMUK can create eye-catching graphics to advertise your business.

“Every customer is important to us,” said MacDonald. “Whatever the size of the business, we give the same level of commitment. We find solutions that maximise van efficiency and optimise field time, whilst ensuring the working environment is safe and legally compliant.

“It doesn’t cost to be pro-active and it certainly costs even less to open a dialogue with SMUK.”

The system has led to a 14% drop in engine idling across the company’s 1,400 vans, cars and trucks. The data collected from the telematic system has also led to a 9% reduction in fleet size, thanks to improved asset utilisation.

“We’re using Michelin Connected Fleet to monitor the data from all our vehicles to

make sure we get consistent information,” said Lee Jackson, head of fleet and transport at Marston.

“It gives us absolute confidence in the data to assess, validate and verify our operations, directly supporting us to make decisions which help the business to become more sustainable.”

Marston provides technology solutions to more than 500 local authorities across the UK, along with central government and private sector organisations. The company operates 650 vans, 350 cars, 300 scooters and 150 trucks, all of which are monitored by the telematic system.

Smart data gathered from Michelin Connected Fleet covering daily mileage, usage,

range and terrain, is also helping the company in its transition to an electric fleet, factoring in charging infrastructure, downtime and range. So far, Marston has been able to increase the size of its electric and hybrid fleet by 17% year-on-year.

Fleet software can reduce downtime

Iveco

offers scrappage top-up

Transport for London (TfL) has announced a £110m scrappage fund, to help companies operating 3.5-tonne diesel vans of Euro 5 or lower emissions standards to move to newer, cleaner vehicles. Under the terms of the deal, small businesses of less than 10 employees, sole traders and charities operating within London, can get a £7,500 contribution towards a new electric vehicle, in exchange for their old van. Iveco is also offering a further £1,000 contriLight commercial vehicles are driving expansion of the BVRLA’s leasing fleet across the UK. The leasing association said that while the overall vehicle fleet grew by 1.9% year-onyear in 2022, the number of vans was up by 7.7% over the same period. Its Leasing Outlook report shows that, while car mileage on an average contract hire over three years was down to 49,680 miles from the industry benchmark 60,000, van mileage continues to rise

bution, if that new van is the latest eDaily, resulting in a total £8,500 saving.

“Air quality is a critical issue and so encouraging operators to go electric by making the switch even more affordable makes sense,” said Mike Cutts, Iveco’s Light Business Line director.

Six out of 10 businesses say that fleet management technology can help to reduce unplanned vehicle downtime, according to software provider FleetCheck. Research carried out by the company demonstrated that reducing costly downtime was a major benefit for fleet software users.

“Unplanned vehicle off road (VOR) rates are a subject that is moving higher up the agenda, as production shortages mean that fleets are operating older vans and trucks,” said managing director Peter Golding.

Vans behind rental fleet growth

“Iveco is proud to support this TfL scheme with an additional £1,000 contribution for eDaily customers.” with the sustained demand for home deliveries and services.

“To see the leasing fleet grow against such a difficult backdrop shows how well the sector is adapting,” said chief executive Gerry Keaney.

“Alternative business models are growing to fill the gaps left by reduced vehicle supply, while the relentless demand for vans shows how the sector has evolved to meet changing driver needs.”

“These inevitably become more difficult to keep roadworthy, breaking down more often. We are finding that managing VOR is becoming an increasingly important factor in businesses choosing to adopt fleet management software.”

Fleet management software helps to reduce VOR by delivering far greater visibility of maintenance events and defects, ensuring that routine servicing and maintenance is carried out, with unplanned issues logged and remedied. With many fleets continuing to age beyond their expected first life, this looks like a problem that is not going to go away any time soon.

Top tips for commercial fit-outs

When it comes to equipping a fleet of vans with storage and racking equipment, it can be a balancing act between maximising efficiency and keeping an eye on total cost. Fleet management specialist Venson Automotive Solutions has created a list of points that companies should expect from their vehicle supplier.

“It’s so important to choose an LCV fleet supplier who can advise on how to get the right conversion and fittings, such as external roof systems and internal storage, ventilation and security, to ensure the most appropriate layout for the vehicle, which in turn, will deliver operational cost savings,” said Alison Bell, operations director at Venson.

“While it’s great for an LCV to look good, a van is a work horse, not a show pony. Getting the job done efficiently is the prime concern. Key to this is getting relevant stakeholders’ input into the conversion requirements. So, selecting an LCV supplier who will take time out to listen carefully and understand the job required of the vehicle, means a conversion that will ensure employees will get their work done efficiently and safely, while at the same time helping the business control its operational costs.”

These are Venson’s top tips for fleet buyers:

FIT FOR PURPOSE?

Consider what the vehicle is being used for, perhaps using a pick-up instead of a van means the driver can get closer to where the work needs to be carried out.

PLAN AHEAD

Anticipate the reuse of racking and other equipment to work out your lifetime costs for the conversion.

COST SAVINGS

Running correctly specified vehicles is critical to the efficiency and productivity of the business. The right conversion ensures the best layout delivering operational savings.

CUSTOMISED RACKING

A provider that can design the maximum storage capacity will save money and time. It will also provide the opportunity to understand whether there’s an opportunity to downsize the vehicle.

PAYLOAD

Productivity and the impact on the vehicle’s performance should be a key consideration when determining equipment specification.

Jiffy celebrates 200 Banquet conversions

DIY RACKING RISKS

Don’t try cutting costs and let a skilled workforce build their own racking to save money. This can prove costly and unproductive and can lead to health, safety and duty of care issues.

TURNKEY SOLUTIONS

Can lead to more efficient handovers and finance process.

KEY-FOR-KEY HANDOVERS

A supplier that can provide a one-stopshop speeds up the time from vehicle order to in-service which helps support minimising fleet downtimes.

REUSE

You can expect to get up to 10 years of use from some equipment. Consider equipment lifecycles when specifying conversion requirements and selecting new vehicle models.

UNDERSTAND TRANSFER COSTS

If you are intending to transfer equipment from one vehicle to another, understand the cost implications including repairs and refurbishments.

Jiffy Trucks has supplied its 200th Isuzu Grafter Jiffy Banquet truck. The vehicle was purchased by long-standing Bolton-based customer Greenhalgh’s Craft Bakery, as part of a three-vehicle order. The Isuzu Grafters are equipped with an Eberspacher-powered keeping oven, a deep soup urn and a GAHpowered refrigeration system, for the display and sale of hot and cold foods. Two of the vehicles have also been equipped with a Rijo 42 bean-to-cup coffee machine, to provide coffee and hot chocolate.

The three Grafters join an eight-strong outdoor catering truck fleet working around Bolton, Wigan, Blackburn and Chorley. Although a long-time Jiffy customer, these are the first Isuzus to join the fleet.

“The Isuzu Grafter Jiffy Banquets have made a tremendous impression with our customers,” said Sarah Goulding, from Greenhalgh’s.

“Not only does the stylish, headturning appearance of the trucks create a favourable impression when they arrive on location, but the wider range of products being displayed has also led to a significant increase in business levels on each route.”

Fourth generation Modul-Connect uses mesh network

Modul-System’s fourth generation Modul-Connect is now available with Bluetooth Mesh technology. This creates new possibilities for connecting electronic components and systems to the host vehicle. Together with the recently launched Climate sensor, PIR sensor and Asset Tracker, the company claims new functionality and improved performance for fleet users.

Designed to work with the technology of today and tomorrow, this latest version of Modul-Connect can now build large-scale Bluetooth networks, to develop faster, more secure communication. For instance, using the Generation 4 box with Modul-Connect’s PIR sensor pro-

vides increased control over lighting settings and whether they switch on in response to detected motion.

“Just like with our modular racking system, which makes it easier for customers to work, we do the same with vehicle lighting,” said Thomas Johansson, vice president of Modul-System.

With the firm’s wireless Climate sensor, the driver can monitor the temperature and humidity of the vehicle’s load area through the Modul-Connect app or through a switch panel. The system can deliver real-time alerts when the temperature or humidity exceeds or falls below the customer setting. Alerts can also be seen through the

Customer Portal, with fleet managers having access to all vehicles remotely and being notified of deviations.

The system also works with Modul-System’s Asset Trackers. These can be attached to tools and other valuable equipment and the generation 4 box automatically tracks these items. If the tool leaves a preset range from the vehicle the driver can be notified through the app or the portal.

Truckman adds new Ranger tops

Truckman has launched a range of hardtops for Ford’s 2023 new Ranger pick-up. As well as a variety of luxury hardtops, the company has unveiled a line of working bodies that can be used to turn the pick-up bed into a workshop. The Truckman RS can be customised with beacons, vents, racking and conduit, to power electrical equipment in the truck bed. The RS will be joined by the Truckman Classic and the Truckman Util-

ity in the coming months.

Users can pair the hardtops with Truckman’s customisable Decked drawer system, a twin drawer storage system for the truck bed. Also on offer are Mountain Top tonneau covers, cargo carriers, bed dividers and sliding trays.

“Whether you will be taking your all-new 2023 Ford Ranger out into the hills of Scotland on a family adventure ,or driving it around the most challenging construction

site, this new collection offers a comprehensive mix of practical and stylish accessories,” said Mike Wheeler, executive chairman of Truckman.

“The Truckman accessories, alongside the new ARB collection produced by our parent company ARB for the 2023 Ford Ranger, ensures we have the most comprehensive selection of accessories for this hotly anticipated pick-up available to the UK market.”

2023 the year ahead

The future of the automotive business and for vans in particular, is looking increasingly like it will be powered by electricity. Manufacturers are moving rapidly away from diesel engine development, to concentrate their resources on plug-in solutions. While 2022 saw the arrival of a number of key electric vans, such as Ford’s E-Transit and the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo, there will be no let-up in 2023, with plenty of new and improved models due to the market.

The global component crisis, particularly the shortage of microchips, is reportedly easing, which should free up manufacturers to build more vehicles and to reduce lead times. That should make more vans available to customers, as an increasing number of companies look to at least trial the latest technology. These are some of the new models that we can expect in 2023.

22 VANUSER • FEBRUARY 2023 PREVIEW | 2023 – THE YEAR AHEAD

Ford

Market leader Ford has committed to launch nine all-electric cars and vans in Europe by 2024. That includes the E-Transit that arrived last year and an E-Transit Custom, with people-carrying E-Tourneo Custom version, that we will see towards the end of this year. There will then be electric versions of the Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier.

The mid-weight E-Transit Custom, like its larger E-Transit stablemate, will be rearwheel drive, offering a range of up to 236 miles from its 74kWh battery pack. Much

of the technology and underpinnings of the van will also be used by Volkswagen in the replacement for the current Transporter. Ford will also launch an updated Custom PHEV hybrid van. Where the original was equipped with a three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine, that acted as a range extender to the battery, the updated model will use the 2.5-litre petrol engine and battery driveline already seen in the firm’s Kuga passenger car. This offers companies a low-emission solution without the potential range anxiety of a full electric model.

Maxus

Electric vans, including the eDeliver 3 and the eDeliver 9, now make up more than a third of Maxus UK’s sales. A third model in the line-up, called eDeliver 7, is expected by the end of the year, though there are no details available yet. Maxus will however be introducing its T90EV electric pick-up in the UK

Iveco

With manufacturers now offering electric drive in a much wider variety of van bodies and chassis lengths, Iveco’s second-generation eDaily will be available in more than 200 versions, with gross weights of 3.5-7.2 tonnes. All sizes are powered by the same 140kW motor, driving through the rear wheels and delivering up to 186 miles of range.

Customers will be able to choose one, two or three battery packs, depending on model. This will allow them to choose between maximum carrying capacity or longer driving range. Iveco will also offer a

this year.

At launch the truck will be rearwheel drive only, though a fourwheel drive model is expected later in 2023. In either case Maxus is promising a driving range of up to 220 miles and a 1-tonne payload. The T90EV is also expected to have a towing capacity of 1.5-tonnes.

4.25-tonne model for the first time, allowing customers to maximise carrying capacity while employing nonHGV drivers.

With the majority of Daily models having some form of conversion work or added body, the eDaily will be available with a choice of three power take-offs, to power body and conversion components. There are two ePTOs, operating at 12V and 2.5kW or 400V and 15kW. For those that require a full hydraulic driveline, there is also a 15kW e-motor option that can be coupled with a conventional hydraulic pump.

Fuso

Those looking for a larger electric chassis from the Mercedes-Benz stable will also be able to opt for Fuso’s next generation eCanter. Previously only available as a single-model 7.5-tonne truck, the new eCanter will be offered on six wheelbases, with gross weights of 4.25-8.55 tonnes. The 4.25-tonner should be a particularly strong addition to the range, as it will be possible to drive without having to have an HGV licence.

Smaller eCanter models will have a 111kW motor and the trucks will be available with one, two or three battery packs. This will allow customers to choose between driving range, which tops out at 124 miles with three packs, or payload.

FEBRUARY 2023 • VANUSER 25 PREVIEW | 2023 – THE YEAR AHEAD

Mercedes-Benz

The original eSprinter was only available in one body size as a front-wheel drive 3.5-tonne panel van, but that is all set to change with the launch this year of the rearwheel drive model. With increased carrying capacity and larger battery storage, the second-generation eSprinter promises to be a far more popular vehicle, appealing to a much wider audience with a range of body styles and sizes.

With the recently updated eVito delivering improved carrying capacity and driving range as well, Mercedes will add a third model to its growing electric line-up this year. The eCitan, based on Renault’s Kangoo E-Tech, will be launched in the coming months, offering customers a full range from compact urban van to heavyweight van and chassis.

Stellantis

The various Stellantis manufacturers, including Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall and more recently Fiat Professional, stole a march on many of their competitors when it comes to electric vans. Indeed, Vauxhall’s Vivaro Electric was the best-selling electric van in the UK last year, for the second year running.

Fiat has now launched its E-Ducato and, more recently the E-Doblo Cargo has completed the line-up. While we

Renault

As mentioned, Renault will be adding the latest Kangoo E-Tech to its electric van range. The compact van is now fitted with a larger 45kWh battery pack, delivering up to 186 miles of driving range. A more powerful 90kW motor delivers the power to the front wheels and the van will get DC rapid charging for the first time, making a mid-day top-up far more of a possibility for longer distance users.

Renault will complete its electric van line-up with the launch of the mid-weight Trafic E-Tech. With a 52kWh battery, the Trafic E-Tech should offer around 149 miles of

Nissan

The Renault Kangoo E-Tech will also be launched with a Nissan badge on the front this year, as the Townstar. The electric Townstar replaces the e-NV200 in Nissan’s van lineup, providing the manufacturer’s dealers with a modern compact electric LCV to satisfy customer demand. Though not confirmed yet, it is likely that the new Trafic E-Tech will also be offered as an electric Nissan Primastar.

driving range, while retaining up to 1.1-tonnes of carrying capacity. It will drive through a 90kW electric motor. As with Kangoo and Master, the midrange Trafic will come with AC and rapid DC charging capability.

The Trafic E-Tech will also be available through Renault Trucks dealers by the summer, with the heavy truck manufacturer offering Red Edition versions of the van alongside Master E-Tech.

Higher up the range, Renault is also expected to unveil a hydrogen-powered version of Master, for those looking to travel farther than the standard E-Tech battery model.

Fuel cell pick-up planned

Toyota’s UK manufacturing facility near Derby is working with a consortium of British companies to develop a Hilux pick-up powered by the hydrogen fuel cell from the company’s Mirai car. The group, which has funding from the UK Government, includes D2H Advanced Technologies, the Advanced Propulsion Centre, Ricardo, European Thermodynamics and Thatcham Research.

The project will see prototype vehicles built at the Burneston site this year, with small series production being considered.

“The UK’s fast approaching ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel-powered vehicles includes pick-ups and that has implications for the off-highway, construction and utilities sectors that depend on these reliable workhorses,” said Adam Evans, senior engineer at D2H.

“Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell technology, as proven in the Mirai, provides one possible solution to the challenge of keeping these industries on the move, in environments where battery electric powertrains often prove impractical.”

Tevva gains European approval

British manufacturer Tevva has received European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval for its 7.5-tonne electric trucks. This means that the company can start producing and selling in volume across the UK and Europe and vehicles have already started to be delivered to Expect Distribution, Travis Perkins and Royal Mail.

Tevva’s truck offers up to 140 miles of driving range, from its 105kWh battery, making it ideal for last-mile delivery operations. The company will also launch a 7.5-tonne truck with a hydro-

Electric availability provides fleet opportunity

The Association of Fleet Professionals reports that, as manufacturers ramp up production, many electric vans are available with shorter lead times than their respective diesel-powered models. This provides an opportunity for fleets to trial electric vans and adopt new technologies.

“As with electric cars, there is a strong possibility that manufacturers are channelling greater resources into electric van production in order to meet corporate emissions targets and this could additionally lead to comparatively strong availability over the next few years,” said AFP chair Paul Hollick.

“We believe now is a good moment for fleets who need vans and who have been deliberating over electrification, to think seriously about placing orders. While there are widespread reservations about some aspects of going electric for light commercial vehicles, in many cases it makes more sense to have an electric van and begin managing those issues sooner than to wait longer for a diesel model.”

gen fuel cell range extender later this year, that will offer up to 354 miles of range.

“We are on a mission to make sustainable trucks accessible at scale and believe our technology will empower the transport sector and the governments of Europe to meet their net-zero goals,” said founder and CEO Asher Bennett.

“By embracing both hydrogen and electric fuel sources, we can rethink the energy mix in transport, reduce strain on our electricity grid and accelerate electric truck adoption.”

Ready for business

Iveco has provided detailed technical data to more than 22 accredited body builders, to ensure that its new eDaily, which is now available to order, can be equipped with a wide range of bodies and conversions. Body builders have full access to the vehicle’s CANbus electrical system, allowing full integration of electrical systems. The eDaily also comes with a choice of three ePTO options, delivering up to 15kW of electrical power for accessories and body conversions.

The vehicle can be had with wheelbases of 3.0-4.75m and gross weights of 3.5-7.2 tonnes, giving it one of the largest model ranges available. Customers can also choose one, two or three modular battery packs, to offset payload with driving range. From day one, Iveco will be able to offer the eDaily with chilled and refrigerated bodies, as a tipper or
