skeletons! Our oldest pupils in Class 3 are learning about life in Victorian Britain and will be travelling back in time to experience life in the workhouse at Gressenhall in Norfolk. We'll also be finding out where our resources come from and how we can make choices to help reduce the impact on the environment. In science, we've been learning about light and how our eyes are so amazing that they help us to see everything in colour. Next, we'll be finding out all about electricity and having fun with circuits! Celebrations is the topic for our youngest pupils in the school, and they've been learning about different types of celebrations that we might experience in our lives and what it's like to be a part
of that celebration. In PE, pupils have been learning about the skills required to work together as a team in games. All Key Stage 2 pupils took part in the Suffolk Schools Cross Country Competition and out of just twenty-two pupils, we managed to achieve gaining two second places, a third and a forth place. These pupils will now go forward to the county finals. In art, all the pupils have been learning about printing. Our younger pupils have created positive and negative prints using polystyrene tiles and string. Pupils in Key Stage 2 have been learning about mosaics and have used printing sticks to create their own mosaic prints. These are just a few of the things that we've been up to this term so far. Please check out our website for more: www. charsfieldprimaryschool.org.uk We've been delighted with the attendance at our Open Days and are taking bookings for our November 10th Open Day. Please contact the office for more information or to book your place on 01473 737347. If this date is not suitable for you, please contact us and we can arrange for a mutually convenient time to show you around our lovely school.

Deben Flower Club on Tuesday 14th December at 7:30pm in Kirton Church Hall, Church Lane, Kirton, IP10 0PU. National demonstrator Nick Grounds will be stretching our imaginations with a demonstration entitled 'Materialists'. Nick always comes up with some unusual ideas and interesting plant material, so we'll be in for a treat this December! We'll be spacing our seating and opening windows for
ventilation to help ensure we remain Covid-secure. Please feel free to wear a mask if you can, until you're seated. Hand sanitiser will be available as you enter the hall. Tea and coffee will be available, but please feel free to bring your own refreshments if preferred. Friends, and new members will always be assured of a warm welcome. Visitors £5. We've had a great start back to school with lots of exciting learning taking place. At the start of term, we were delighted to welcome our new Reception pupils to the school, who have settled in so well into school life that it feels like they've been at Charsfield forever! In Class 2, our year 3 and 4 pupils have been learning about the Romans and were incredibly lucky to be treated to a museum day in school where they were able to handle genuine Roman artefacts and learn more about them. The pupils then visited Colchester Castle to learn more about the Roman's and the impact they had on the local area. In our science lessons, we've been learning about our amazing bodies with a focus on bones and

As we approach the end of another extraordinary year, we'd like to thank all those who continued to support the Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats Protection branch during another difficult time. We send our very best wishes to everyone for Christmas and a very good new year to come! Eight precious weeks, Covid and subsequent lockdowns has further increased demand for new pets and changed the way that owners find them. CPs report (Cats UK 2021) found that just over half of all cats purchased (52%) were found online, including sites like Facebook and Gumtree. Because of unregulated online selling, a worrying cat welfare issue is now on the rise. Kittens are being mis-
sold by unscrupulous sellers, who separate them from their mothers before the eight precious weeks mark, meaning they're missing out on vital nutrients and social development time. This winter, CP wants to raise awareness of the 'eight precious weeks' of a kittens life. Kitten mis-selling for easy profit is on the increase, often resulting in kittens being taken from their mother when they are too young to thrive without her. Buying over the internet makes it far harder to spot a deceitful seller often with devastating consequences. • A kitten sold too young is far more likely to suffer a lifethreatening illness than if they've built up immunity through their

tunes, a huge helping of audience participation, and plenty of feefi-fo-fun, as they tell the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, which unfolds in the Pantoland village of Fiddle-on-the-Fen and tells the tale of Jack, who is tricked into exchanging the family cow for a bag of beans, that turn out to be magic seeds that grow overnight into a giant beanstalk. The Trot family climb to the top of the beanstalk to rescue Daisy the Cow, only to discover a Giant's kingdom and the answer to all their money worries. But will they make it back in one piece? Or will the Giant Blunderbore grind their bones to make his bread? Film Theatre Manager and Pantomime Director, Wayne Burns, is looking forward to returning to the stage: "After such a difficult time for our beloved Film Theatre, we're so pleased to see Pantomime back to Leiston and the entire cast can't wait to bring our brilliant script to life on stage and perform for such appreciative crowds. Our audiences are in for a real treat" he said. The Pantomime sees renowned Suffolk musician Tom Horton returning as the Musical Director

Following the resounding success of Goldilocks and the Three Bears in 2020, Pantomime returns to the stage of the splendid Leiston Film Theatre in January, after sadly having to be postponed in 2021, due to lockdown. Jack and the Beanstalk appears live on stage at the 107-year-old venue on Thursday 13th, Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th January, with demand for tickets so high, that seats for some performances are already limited, with over 1,000 tickets already sold. The Pantomime has been written by Wayne Burns and Stephen Ginger, who between them have over thirty years of Pantomime behind them. The show is being brought to the stage under Wayne's 'Team B Productions' title. A group of experienced am-dram performers, many of which have previously appeared on the Film Theatre stage and whose previous sellout successes have included shows at Leiston Film Theatre and at the Spa Pavilion Theatre in Felixstowe. The group promise another funfilled family pantomime, packed to the panto brim with toe-tapping

Future talks at the Suffolk Family Open air Christmas concert History Society, Ipswich Group The first talk is on Wednesday 1st December at 7:30pm. Nicky Reynolds presents a fascinating and lively talk about 'The Soil Cinderellas' - Better known as The Women's Land Army. These women (some perhaps posher than others) signed up to the Women's Land Army. Some city girls had probably never see a cow close up! Their experiences changed their lives forever! We welcome family stories on this topic! On 5th January 2022, we have one of our own members, Linda Sexton, who will present a talk with a very local flavour. Her talk 'Suffolk Children in Care' tells the story of St Johns Home, which was located in the Freehold
Road and Britannia Road area of Ipswich. The home helped around 400 children get a better life. Some ended up in Manchester, others in Leicester. When she presented her talk about the Hope House orphanage in Foxhall Road, we had a really big audience. This talk will probably attract a similar number! All our talks take place at The Salvation Army Citadel, 558 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich, IP4 4PH. The talks start at 7:30pm and there is parking at the rear. Admission is £2 for members and £3 for non-members, who are welcomed. No need to book, just turn up! For more information, call Howard on 01473 274300.

Christmas will be nearly upon us when Woodbridge Rotary Club hold their 69th Open Air Carol Concert on Wednesday 22nd December 2021 at 6:30pm. This year, they're holding it at Whisstocks Place at the bottom of Tide Mill Way instead of Market Hill. Father Christmas will be making his usual visit with sweets for all the children. The 5th Woodbridge Sea Scouts will be selling hot dogs, teas, coffee, hot chocolate and non-alcoholic mulled wine to keep everyone warm. This will be followed by The Spirit of Christmas 'Son et Lumiere', a spectacular and magical world of light and sound on the Tide Mill. This year's event will lead us into Christmas, something to brighten us all up after all the curtailed events of the pandemic. The event will go ahead whatever
the weather so please come prepared. The Tide Mill Way will be closed for normal traffic between 6pm-10pm. Access to residents and those wishing to visit the Tide Mill Yacht Harbour will be allowed and those who are disabled. Please abide by the rail crossing signals. Rotary Marshals will be in attendance to guide you on your way. As usual, the event is free but there'll be a voluntary contribution collection. Nett proceeds will be donated to charities supported by Woodbridge Rotary Club. One of these we hope to be the NSPCC, helping support young children in their hour of need. Please come prepared to help others and make a small donation to the many charities which Woodbridge Rotary Supports. Woodbridge Rotary Club would like to acknowledge support of Woodbridge Town Council and Mortimers Estate Agents.

Woodbridge Cruising Club As winter approaches, Woodbridge Cruising Club members are enjoying a full range of activities, with weekend lunchtime bars, as well as dancing, maintenance parties and the Monday afternoon group with coffee and cake. Wednesday suppers are a welcome interlude to cold dark nights, with delicious home cooked food, and the chance to socialise. These continue until spring, when boats are back in the water. The winter walk programme is now well into its stride, with Monica and Janet leading a November walk from Levington and along the Orwell, giving a different view for sailors. This is a four-mile stroll, along the side of the marina, round the lake, across farmland, with glimpses of the Orwell. All walks are researched and led by members, and are a
regular Thursday event. The first Sunday talk of the new season was Andy Beharrell about the Army and Navy forts built offshore in the Thames Estuary, and North Sea. This was an amusing, humorous and entertaining talk, with nostalgic photos of pirate radio stations and the principality of Sealand. Andy is also a trustee of The Woolverstone Project which provides sailing for those with disabilities throughout the year at Alton Water and during summer on the River Orwell. Robert Simper's talk was on people who made the River Deben, and gave an insight into some of the characters at the very heart of the River Deben over the years and who have contributed to the rich character of the river. Future talks are by our very own Captain Peter King on 'Thermopylæ - The finest clipper
of them all', and Paul Bragg on Biscay Ports. If these sound intriguing, why not join WCC to discover more. The November AGM was well attended, and reports submitted from the treasure and cruise captain Andy, who organised the wonderful summer cruises enjoyed by all. There's a range of social events, from the Black Tie Commodore's Christmas Party, the New Year's Eve party and more, and members are looking forward to these. The club has a wide range of events throughout the year (nautical and land-based). If you're keen to join, do visit the club website: www. woodbridgecruisingclub.org. New members are always welcome, whether you own a motorboat or yacht, or are keen to start sailing.

Gift Service This year will be at 10:45am on Sunday December 19th, when we'll be inviting donations for East Anglia Children's Hospices (EACH). Luncheon Club Luncheon Club is now operating again regularly on the second Friday in the month in the Orange Hall at 12 noon. A great group of elderly people meet for fellowship and good home cooked food. The hall is nice and warm! Rosedale Rosedale Funeral Directors are planning to hold their annual Memorial Service at Emmanuel on Sunday December 12th at 2pm. All those from the town who wish to remember their loved ones are welcome to attend. Best wishes to all our friends! May God bless you and keep you safe and in the coming months.

On the 5th of December, specially decorated boats (crewed by the Woodbridge Sea Scouts) will accompany Sae Wylfing, The Sutton Hoo Ship's Company's own half size replica of an Anglo-Saxon ship, to form a mini Christmas Regatta. Setting off at approximately 12:30pm and working their way down the River Deben from The Woodbridge Boat Yard, they'll lead a parade to be followed by the public, ending at Whisstocks Place on Tide Mill Way. On arrival, participants will be met by Santa in his Sleigh, supported by his helpers from the Deben Rotary Club, and live festive music curated by The Spirit Of Woodbridge.

charge. • Other loss relief (which may be lost if not claimed) can be used instead. • There is a large Balancing Charge (where on disposal the relief you have had exceeds residual value) ahead upon a planned cessation. A few points to consider when considering waiving your entitlement: • HMRC cannot force you to make a claim for CAs each year. • You need to do the maths. • You can choose to waive some or all of any capital allowances. • Consider the future. • You may end up waiving your entitlement to CAs at one rate to replace it in a later year with a lower rate (but ultimately, you'll still receive the same amount of allowance over the life of the asset. It's just the timing of when you receive the relief that you're adjusting). • Try to get the CA claim right first time, as HMRC take a dim view to reopening accounts. • Take professional advice unless you understand the implications. By not automatically claiming every allowance at the first
127368
For tax purposes, the method of claiming asset depreciation is known as Capital Allowances (CAs). These operate on a reducing pool of value basis using HMRC-prescribed rates ranging from 2% to 100% depending on the asset (and tax year) involved. These allowances are then treated as deductions against your annual profits. But must you claim them? The answer is no. You're not forced to claim CAs each year and there several reasons why you may choose to waive your entitlement, especially as you generally don't lose the unclaimed value (so you're able to continue claiming in a following year where you left off). You may wish to waive CAs when: • Your profits are low enough to be covered by your personal allowances and by claiming CAs, they don't affect your tax and/or NIC liability. • You wish to increase the effectiveness of any averaging claim. • Higher profits are needed for pension or mortgage purposes. • Claiming them might trigger an excessive Gift Aid donation

12% of people over 16 in Suffolk are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes...
Manager From £6,000 p.a
Could you be one of them? You can check your risk and reduce your chances of developing the condition with help from the NHS and the National Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP). Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable through lifestyle changes. The NDPP is free to join and has a proven track record of success in helping people reduce their chances of developing the disease by supporting them to maintain a healthy weight, eat better and be more active. Anyone can check their own risk status and find out if they're eligible to join the programme by completing the 'Know Your Risk' online assessment on the Diabetes UK website: www.riskscore. diabetes.org.uk/start. People who reach a risk score
of sixteen or above will be given instructions on how to join the programme. Participants are booked into group classes which are currently being delivered remotely. Classes are available in eighteen languages and participants may have a friend or relative alongside them for support if necessary. Those who'd rather not attend group sessions for practical reasons or because they have learning difficulties or mental health issues, can request one-toone coaching with a specialist dietician over the telephone and track their progress via an app. Dr David Egan (GP and

Diabetes Lead for the NHS Ipswich & East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group) said: "We know this course can work very well for the people who stick with it. Type 2 diabetes is currently one of the biggest threats to our population's health and yet it's a condition which can be delayed or prevented. I'd encourage everyone at risk of diabetes to assess their risk as diabetes can lead to kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, sight loss and amputations. It also makes it more difficult for people to fight serious conditions such as cancer and heart disease and viruses such as Covid and flu."

It's been four years in the making. We've researched, we've commissioned reports but most importantly of all, we've consulted. Now, we need to know what you think of our draft Neighbourhood Plan. The Halesworth Neighbourhood Plan is about protecting what you value most about the town as well as identifying potential opportunities to enhance and improve. We cannot necessarily stop developers building, but we can ensure that they apply proper standards of design and that the green spaces and play areas you love are protected. There are some aspirational ideas in the plan, but there are also nineteen formal policies, protecting our town for the future. On Monday 1st November, Town Councillors approved our draft plan and so it now goes through a rigorous consultation process called 'Regulation 14'. We'll be writing to over sixty-five organisations, consulting local businesses but most importantly of all, we want to hear from YOU. You have until the 17th December to tell us what you think about our plan. You can download a copy from the Halesworth Town Council website or you can find a copy and forms for commenting at the Library or Town Council
Offices. Remember, we cannot change developments that have already been agreed or are in the Waveney Local Plan. On Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th November, over 140 people joined us for the Neighbourhood Weekender. A further twenty-six people joined us online and by live stream (so sorry about the poor sound quality). Thank you for those of you who shared your questions and concerns and thank you to those of you who filled in our comments forms. And thanks to Rev Jane Held and St Mary's PCC, Simon, Gwen, Gabrielle and Jo who helped with the teas and Juddy Leach who provided the van. Our weekender reminded us how much you value Halesworth and how passionate you are about protecting it. You love the green spaces, the mix of shops and businesses that make the Thoroughfare buzz. Many of you also spoke about your worries that long-promised plans for new sports facilities, new retail opportunities will never come to fruition. We believe our plan shows the ways that we can act now for future generations, safeguarding what we cherish about Halesworth but also highlighting exciting opportunities for the future. Now, it's over to YOU to tell us what you think.

a busy period at The Pear Tree Fund, as demand for our services and support has continued to increase. We welcomed our new Information and Advice Coordinator, Caroline Goldsmith, to the team at the Pear Tree Centre. We welcomed the return of the Parkinson's and Dementia Carers Support groups to the centre. Our team started a new fortnightly Friday morning general carers support group, and a cancer support group is soon to follow. We'd like to hear from people who'd be interested in helping develop support groups for diabetes and stroke. We've had stalls at both the Bungay and Beccles Infomarkets organised by East Suffolk District Council and made useful links with other local organisations. We took delivery of a 'Grandpad', a tablet computer designed to help older people connect with the wider world and reduce loneliness and social isolation. Our team can provide a demonstration of the 'Grandpad' and help local people to acquire one on free loan from the District Council. The Pear Tree Fund provides holistic wellbeing and bereavement support, information and advice and access to support groups, to anyone with a life-changing illness, long-term condition and their families and carers, living in East Suffolk and neighbouring parts of Mid-Suffolk and South Norfolk. Community memorial event People of all ages were invited to remember those that had lost, share stories of what helped in grief and explore ways to support each other at a special event to mark World Compassionate Communities Day on the 1st November at Kaliwood in Holton. Philip Carr-Gomm, psychotherapist and former Chosen Chief of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, led an inclusive opening and closing ceremonies and a remembrance fire walk. The Pear Tree Fund and Kinda Education worked in partnership for months to create this opportunity for the
remembrance and celebration. Activities included mortal yarns storytelling, compassionate conversations, Samhain weaving, decorating glass lanterns, creating a memory tree and 'letting go' with leaves. Further events are planned for the winter solstice and equinox with smaller workshops held in the intervening months. Dee's Den fashion show A fun-filled evening of fashion and fizz took place at the Pear Tree Centre on Friday 12th November at the inaugural Dee's Den fashion show. The evening was a showcase of the finest selection of pre-loved clothes stocked at Dee's Den, our charity shop in Halesworth. A dazzling array of accessories were also on display. Our amazing models wowed the audience on the catwalk accompanied by an exciting selection of music, ranging from Abba to a Superman-inspired pyjama section and a James Bond-themed evening-wear finale. The audience enjoyed a glass of prosecco, tasty canapés and a delightful sweet. Thank you to Edwards Restaurant in Halesworth for donating a delicious array of chocolate treats. After the show, there was an opportunity to buy the clothes features on the catwalk and a selection of other high quality pre-loved clothes and accessories from Dee's Den. We've been inundated with requests to host another fashion show from both those who attended and others who missed out on obtaining a ticket. Watch this space! The money raised will help us continue to support people with life-changing illnesses and longterm conditions, as well as their families and carers.
We'd like to thank Halesworth Golf Club and especially the team captains, for all their support this year in raising funds for us. Members of Halesworth Golf Club have been very generous in their support. We're grateful to other local organisations who have raised money for us over the last two months, including Bramfield Bingo Club (£717.13), Queen's Head Bramfield (£166.94) and Bramfield harvest supper (£25). A special mention to Joy Ayes of Joy's Junk, who has regularly raised £150 a month at the Laxfield community market. We received donations in memory of Alison Ringwood and Pamela Gray. Thank you to their family and friends for supporting The Pear Tree Fund. Over the last three months, we've received many donations from individuals. We'd like to thank: P Bones, Mr and Mrs Cunningham, J Edward and J Smith, A Langford, D Penman, C Lloyd, Rachel Booth, J Clarke, David Watts and F Phillips, for their generous donations to our charity. Congratulations to Mr Witherby, who won both second and third prize in October's 50:50 Club draw. The 50:50 club helps to raise funds for the charity and enables us to support more people that need our help. If you're interested in joining the 50:50 club, you can find out more information and register on our website.

Funding boost for innovative new youth project Over £100,000 has been agreed for innovative new project which supports young people in rural areas of East Suffolk.
Last night, East Suffolk Council's cabinet agreed to allocate £101,650 for a twoyear pilot project which aims to support young people in rural parts of the district as they face ongoing challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic. Delivered by Community Action Suffolk, the Rural Youth Support Project will initially focus on the four most rural Community Partnership areas in East Suffolk, which are within the Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth and villages Community Partnership,
the Carlton Colville, Kessingland and villages Community Partnership, the Framlingham, Wickham Market and villages Community Partnership and Melton, Woodbridge and Deben Peninsula Community Partnership. The aim of the project is to provide support tailored to each community, which will be based on engagement with its young people about their needs. This could include providing more social opportunities with a youth café or youth club, supporting a
Bright Stars
healthier lifestyle with activity sessions or making services more accessible with carpools. This comes after seven of the East Suffolk Community Partnerships identified some aspect of support for young people as one of their priorities, including education, opportunities, aspirations, services, facilities, activities, physical activities and mental wellbeing. Cllr Letitia Smith (East Suffolk Council's cabinet member for Communities, Leisure and Tourism)said: "Young people have been hugely impacted by the pandemic, and we know that many are concerned about
the long-term implications, particularly in rural communities where there are specific challenges around access to services and youth provision. East Suffolk Council is committed to supporting our young people as we hopefully continue to recover, whether this is based on mental health and wellbeing, education aspirations, job opportunities or something completely different, this project will allow us to focus on specific local needs of our young people in rural areas." The Rural Youth Support project will compliment other youth projects available in East Suffolk, including the Council's
'Youth Voice' project and Suffolk County Council's 'Youth Focus'. Christine Abraham (CEO of Community Action Suffolk) said: "Community Youth Work is vital, and the benefits they provide for young people are real and long-lasting. While public services step in when problems occur, community youth work can prevent so many of those difficulties from occurring in the first place and it's great to see East Suffolk investing in this work. We hope that the project will provide the right level of support for communities to create more local opportunities for safe, supportive, and fun youth provision."

Would you like to receive our Bright Stars activities sheets for pre-school aged children? Bright Stars normally runs free fun activity sessions for preschool aged children with their parents, grandparents, friends, family/carers at St Michael's Church Centre, Martlesham Heath, on the 2nd and 4th Monday mornings of each month during term time. They usually involve singing, games, making crafts to take home and telling stories from the Bible. At the moment, we're sending out activity sheets by email/ post for the children to enjoy doing with their family/carers. Unfortunately, we're not meeting
in person at present due to the pandemic. We're now looking at the Christmas story which started with an angel visiting Mary to tell her that she'll be having a baby boy. If you have or look after a child/children of pre-school age and would like to receive our sheets, please give us a call on the phone number below. We look forward to hearing from you! Happy Christmas to everyone from Bright Stars. If you'd like further information, please contact Sonya and Maureen Burrows on 01473 625196.
Cracking down on unlicensed dog breeding in East Suffolk East Suffolk residents are urged to carry out thorough checks when buying a puppy, following investigations into illegal dog breeding in the district. On Thursday 30th September, officers from East Suffolk Council's Environmental Protection team exercised two warrants at addresses in Leiston in connection with unlicensed, and therefore illegal, dog breeding and/or sales of puppies under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Supported by Suffolk Police, arrests were made, and evidence gathered. These actions follow many months of investigation, which is hoped will identify other illegal sites and practices
in the area. Puppy farming is a cruel practice which overbreeds from bitches, often in poor conditions and without the necessary care. By selling puppies from fake show homes, buyers are duped into thinking that puppies had a good start in life and will be healthy. The trade is often connected to organised crime. Cllr James Mallinder (East Suffolk's cabinet member for the Environment) said: "Our officers are experts in animal licensing matters and will continue to work with Suffolk Police and local veterinary practices to shut down illegal and cruel activities like this when they are found in our area.
The Deben Players "Sleeping Beauty" Christmas 2021 At the christening of a long wished for Princess, everyone in the Kingdom is invited. The Good Fairies offer gifts to the princess, such as beauty and health. However, a Wicked Fairy (whose invitation to the christening has been overlooked) places her under a fatal spell as her gift. A Good Fairy changes the spell so that the Princess will not die but will sleep for a hundred years, until awakened by love's

Before December becomes too frantic, why not bring the family to Woodbridge Library for a Christmas family quiz? It's on Saturday 4th December from 6pm for a couple of hours with refreshments provided and a raffle with some star prizes. Yes, it's genuinely for all the family! The quiz questions will be geared to mixed-age teams so, whether your team is made up of two, three or even four generations, you'll all be able to help provide the answers. Teams should be a maximum of six people - and two families could combine. Children will be able to play free of charge, adults pay £5 each. All proceeds will go towards the work of the Friends
of Woodbridge Library. During the interval, refreshments (which will include mulled wine and mince pies) will be served and raffle prize tickets will be drawn. Prizes have been donated by local organisations many of whom actively support the Library as a thriving community centre. To book your team table, just drop in to the Library or phone 01394 330855 and give the staff a contact name and phone number for your team. A distinctive team name can be decided later! And to get you in the mood... Can you pinpoint the Library in the above aerial photo of Woodbridge? Image courtesy of David Mortimer.

Woodbridge Town Council
Town Council thwarted in bid to meet with East Suffolk Council over 'cheese wedges' site The commitment by East Suffolk Council (ESC) for any new developer to closely engage with Woodbridge Town Council and with local people over Melton Hill's controversial 'cheese wedges' development is being called into question. East Suffolk officers have now twice refused to meet the Town Council to discuss how ESC will structure that engagement. In August 2021, ESC told the media: "ESC is now ready to re-market the site with a fresh perspective and with certain expectations from the purchaser. ESC would like to see any potential developer coming forward forging a close working relationship with the local
community and Woodbridge Town Council, ensuring that local people's views are being heard and taken into consideration." This message was reinforced in an article in the EADT on 30th September, 2021: "When the offices went up for sale, the council said it'd like to see potential developers coming forward forging a close working relationship with the local community and Woodbridge Town Council, to ensure that local people's views are being heard and taken into consideration. "We're hoping for something that fits with the local housing needs and something that's compatible with the historic nature of Woodbridge," one
local resident said. "Let's hope the council are people of their word when they say that they want the developers to work with the community. They said that last time, but they didn't. They completely ignored the community." On 20th October, 2021 and again on 27th October, 2021 Sue Bale (Mayor of Woodbridge) wrote to ESC, asking for a meeting to understand the mechanism by which ESC would require any new developer to engage with the community and with the Town Council. Both requests for ESC to meet with the Town Council have been refused. In its replies, ESC has watered down its previous
publicly-stated position for developers to 'forge a close working relationship' to 'a strong recommendation that developers have pre-application discussions with the local community." Woodbridge residents and the Town Council are keen to work in partnership with any new developer to maximise the potential opportunity that the Melton Hill site offers and are disappointed that ESC is reluctant to meet to discuss how this can be achieved. Residents are encouraged to sign up to the Woodbridge email service to be kept aware of developments. www. woodbridge-suffolk.gov.uk/ home/mailchimp/
Woodbridge Tide Mill announce winners of their 2021 photo competition and mini-Saxon ship'. Lawrie won £100, courtesy of The Woodbridge Arts Society. Lawrie reacted to his prize: "My twin sister and I enjoy coming to Woodbridge to see our grandparents. The Tide Mill is one of the regular places we like to visit with them, and our grandfather was an occasional guide there until a couple of years ago. They suggested we try our luck with the competition. We're really happy to have come first and second and we're looking forward to seeing the calendar." The winners were selected by a panel of judges, led by awardwinning photographers Eamonn McCabe (of The Guardian and other publications) and Sarah Brown (of The East Anglian). Other judges were John Carrington (Chair, Woodbridge Tide Mill Trust), James Robbins (from sponsor Marshall Hatchick LLP Solicitors), Jane Lynam (of sponsor The Arts Society Woodbridge), Sue Bale (Woodbridge Town Councillor) and Áine Bethell (from Yr11 at Farlingaye High School and Youth Voice Woodbridge). The competition attracted nearly two-hundred entries from a wide range of local, and not-solocal, entrants including thirty-six photos in the U16 category. The images all reflect the enduring popularity of the Mill as a photographic model representing something very special to our beautiful town. Twelve of the judges favourite photos will feature in a Tide Mill Calendar for 2022 which will go on sale in October to raise money for the Tide Mill Charitable Trust
and help keep the Mill in working order for visitors. Woodbridge Tide Mill Trust Chair, John Carrington commented: "We've been pleasantly surprised by the popularity of the photo competition. In only its first year, the response has been very healthy. We're very grateful to all those that entered, many of whom will see their work in the
Tide Mill 2022 Calendar. I'd like to thank the winners, all our entrants, the judges for ploughing through the entries (which takes longer than you think!) and of course the headline sponsor, Marshall Hatchick Solicitors as well as The Arts Society Woodbridge for encouraging young photographers with a prize and printers Suffolk Digital for giving an A2 print to the winner."

many social media posts. I currently promote 445 One Ball Racing on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. I'm hoping this article will further promote the cause and raise awareness of the disease. My long term goal is to raise money for 'Orchid', a male cancer charity through selling 445 merchandise. I'd also like to reach out to local businesses for their support in the 2022 season. 445 One Ball Racing is entirely self-funding, I'm looking for sponsorship in exchange for advertising space on my motorcycle and promotion on my social media pages, and brand awareness in the race paddock. In addition to this, I'll be offering any help (where I can) to businesses who are kind enough to offer sponsorship. To find out more about 445 please find me on social media: '@445oneballracing' on Instagram and '445 one ball racing' on both Facebook and YouTube. Thank you for reading this and for anything you can do to help raise awareness of testicular cancer! Matt Finch

Jane Cochrane's atmospheric 'Winter Guardian' really captures the quiet beauty of nature in winter. Brian Beaney's lively abstract painting really pops and I found it pleasing and cheerful! Stephen Emms' 'Winter Sunset' really captures the feel of a frosty evening on the River Deben. We often find people say they'd like to join the art club, but worry their work won't be "good enough!" If that's you, please be assured that we're about learning together and enjoying the creative process. Maybe with the new year coming you'd like to focus on your artistic skills? We're a friendly club and welcome new members. You can find out more about us and contact us via our website: www.woodbridgeartclub.co.uk.
hard as I could. From being around the community I know that the demographic of motorcycle riders is heavily male dominant with males aged from their teens to around forty-five - being the 'at risk' category for testicular cancer. 445 One Ball Racing was created to raise awareness of testicular cancer to men and women in the motorcycle community. To promote self examination and giving young males the confidence to see a healthcare professional if concerned. I wanted to encourage people to openly discuss 'the c word' and not be afraid to speak to those who have been affected by the disease. Speaking about the disease has really helped my own recovery, and I want to encourage others to do the same but also show others that there is life after cancer. Since creating 445 One Ball Racing, I've entered three race weekends, completed nine races (with a best finish of fifteenth position), several track days and had two crashes. I've published over twenty YouTube videos and

Woodbridge Art Club At time of writing, we're just about to open our November exhibition which continues every weekend (12-4pm) until Sunday 5th December. The lace group have a beautiful display of snowflakes, jug covers and other delicate decorations. There are some lovely oil paintings by Stephen David of winter scenes. Stephen's work is quite impressionistic and he uses colour effectively. Dorothy Stokes' work has been very popular this year. Dorothy is another artist who knows how to use colour well. She's worked her usual magic of colour and form on 'Peony Still Life'. As usual, there's lots of wonderful pottery. The beautifully-shaped bowls pop with the rich colours of different glazes.
I'm an amateur motorcycle racer from the Woodbridge area who's reaching out to the local community for support in the 2022 race season. In late 2017/early 2018, at the age of twenty-nine, I was diagnosed and treated with testicular cancer. At the age of 29, my life was beginning, I'd just been given a job offer of becoming a police officer (a lifelong career aspiration). I'm young father with two children who were at the time, under ten. I was fit and active. I'd already been a motorcycle rider. My father raced motorcycles while I was growing up and the rest of my family were either riding motorcycles, or had been. I began riding from the age of thirteen in my grandparent's garden and have always been a fan of motorcycle racing, going to circuits and watching live events. The cancer opened my eyes to how short life could be, so I decided to participate in motorcycle racing myself. I wanted to achieve my goal of being amongst the other riders on a grid, starting a race together, and pushing myself and machine as

Although the Tide Mill is probably the most photographed building in Woodbridge, this is the first time it's recognised the fact with a competition. First place was awarded to Sam Pyle from Woodbridge with her photograph 'Serenity'. Sam won £250, courtesy of Marshall Hatchick Solicitors. Plus, an A2 acrylic print of her winning picture from Suffolk Digital Printers. Sam observed: "I'd been coming to work early for a few mornings to try and capture a great photo of the river and the Tide Mill because it's such an iconic feature of Woodbridge, and that particular morning (Valentine's Day!), the sunrise and the mist was just amazing. I didn't have my digital camera with me, so quite interestingly, this winning photograph was taken on an Android phone. There are so many other great photos of the Tide Mill out there and I feel amazed and extremely honoured to have been selected as this year's winner." Second placed was awarded to Zoe Harris from Maldon, Essex with her image titled 'Maritime Festival Fun'. Zoe received £100, courtesy of Marshall Hatchick Solicitors. "Woodbridge is one of my favourite places on the Suffolk Coast. There are some amazing areas to visit if you're looking for photographic inspiration. I'm delighted that my black and white image of the Tide Mill has been selected as runner up and I look forward to seeing it in the calendar." The U16 winner was Lawrie James from London with 'Mill
