Alde Valley Academy held a bake sale on Friday 24th September to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. With help from student ambassadors from Year 11, and generous donations from the school community, we managed to raise £150. Dr Dan Poulter MP 29th September 2021 The favourite part of my week is undoubtedly returning home to Suffolk when Parliament concludes on a Thursday. The marked change of returning home to Suffolk with its wideopen skies and clean air is immediately rejuvenating after being in London. We're lucky to live in a county like Suffolk protected from over-development and with our strong rural heritage. Protecting Suffolk, the UK, and the rest of the world from climate change is the reason that world leaders are meeting in Glasgow for the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties summit (COP26) in early November. At the conference, the UK and all the other countries attending will be expected to carry out a process known as the "ratchet mechanism", whereby a greater commitment is made to reducing carbon emissions and prevent further global warming. Climate change is one of the greatest challenges we face, and I'm proud of Britain's world-

leading role in tackling climate change and the transition to Clean Energy Growth. The UK was the first country to pass laws to become carbon neutral and eliminate our contribution to climate change by 2050. We've been the second fastest country in the G20 to cut climate emissions. Suffolk's Energy Coast is now playing an important role in the supply of the UK's clean energy requirements and it's anticipated that our area will produce some 30% of the UK's energy requirements by 2030. I recently met with the South Korean Vice Minister for Trade, Industry and Energy: Park Jin-kyu to discuss climate change. South Korea is a world leading economy in developing new technologies including new technologies that help to reduce carbon emissions. They're also passing laws to ensure that South Korea will be carbon neutral by 2050. If we're serious about meeting our own climate change commitments, we shall need to continue to

The COP26 summit will also highlight the need for us all to play our own individual role in helping to reduce carbon emissions and slow down the rate of climate change. Whilst global Governments and industry are key players, tackling climate change is everyone's responsibility and by making small and simple changes in our daily lives, we can collectively help to make a 169017 difference. Have you ever wondered what Nordic walking is... or whether it's for you? Well, it's for almost everyone! Using the upper body to work muscles we don't often use, it works the heart, gently rotates the lower back, takes a third of the pressure off knees, hips, ankles and feet, and generally makes walking almost double its potential for fitness. Using over 90% of the bodies muscles, (swimming only uses 63%), you soon find that you're more supple in areas of the body that previously struggled. As we get older, our balance begins to go, Nordic walking can help with this, not just because the poles keep us upright! But because the technique helps align areas of the brain too. All in all, it's a total body workout, but out in the air, with good company and lovely countryside. To join a class, you need to be reasonably fit and able to walk

three or four miles with ease. The poles propel you along, so you'll find you walk faster than normal. Once your stride lengthens, the core of the body tightens, and the benefits of Nordic walking begin to take effect! Classes coming soon to Bungay. To find out more, email Maggie at magsnordic@gmail. com (or ring 07736 929773). I often can't answer the phone if I'm leading a walk, so email first if you can't get me on the phone. Poles are supplied during classes. I've been teaching Nordic walking for the past fourteen years and taught in many colleges

and holiday companies over the country, as well as locally in Suffolk. So if you're looking to learn something new, enjoy the outdoors, meet new people, and get a bit fitter at the same time, then get in contact and join the world of Nordic walking! Now that theatre doors are open again, we're looking forward to the return of our past members and very much hoping to attract new members to our amateur musical theatre group. If singing or dancing isn't your thing, there are numerous backstage roles required to support our productions. We'll very shortly be looking to cast our world premier April 2022 production, 'The Ballad of Robyn Hood'. This is a musical comedy about a theatre group who have hit upon hard times. With no money for license fees, they're forced to perform the terrible shows written and starring local bully Maureen Desmond whose latest show, 'Thatcher - the Musical' has just finished. The story goes that Aunt Christine once spent a bohemian summer in Paris in the sixties where she shared a garret with two young musicians, the 'soon to be famous' Andrew Laird Warbler and Tim Rhys. After a particularly bohemian party, the boys decide to head off to Buenos Aires where Tim has an idea about a new show. Their musical about Robyn Hood is abandoned but Christine brings it home with her where it stays undiscovered for many years. The show follows the story of the society's struggle to get the show to stage as Maureen (furious at having her next show overlooked) tries her best to sabotage it. Rehearsals are in Beccles and our performances are held in Beccles Public Hall. If you're interested in becoming involved, why not come along to the preview evening. This is being held Monday 1st November at 7:30pm in the Quaker Hall, Beccles where you'll find out

We've recently received funding thanks to East Suffolk Council and the East Suffolk Community Partnership funds to take people out to combat isolation and loneliness. This is an exciting opportunity for Suffolk residents in and around Lowestoft, Beccles and Bungay. Are you, or do you know anyone who is struggling to get out and socialise? Are you feeling anxious about leaving your home, or are you unsure of what groups or clubs are available? The month of September holds a special place for members of the RAF, both serving and veterans. On Saturday 18th September, the first 'Wings Appeal' collection for 2021 was held in Exchange Square. Many local families and visitors were calling at our marquee and we thank all those generous people whose contributions to our charity will make such a difference to those who help defend our nation. The following day (19th September) was 'Battle of Britain Sunday'. This saw the RAF Ensign flying proudly from the Beccles Church Tower. At 3pm, the parade and church service at St. Benet's Minster commenced with the entry of the standards for the church service and commemoration for those who made the supreme sacrifice in 1940. The service was hosted by Fr. Martin Gowman OSB MA ARCO and also included Canon Ron Tuck, Norfolk and Suffolk Wing

Talks at the Woodbridge Society

During the Covid lockdown, the Art Club was closed and many of the potters were unable to continue their normal pottery activities at home, especially as many wives, husbands, partners do not tolerate bits of clay on the sofa, in their bed or garnishing their evening meal! So, the potters were given various small tasks to get them thinking and Andy Wright came up with the bright idea of making a Roman oil lamp. It didn't have to be very big but potters could use a bit of lateral thinking in their designs. The lamps have now been fired, had wicks inserted, oil added and generally set on fire. It was a bit of fun and the results were very pleasing with the added bonus that the Club now has

It's only a few weeks since the town was expecting to welcome a number of refugee families. This will not now happen but there are still around 2,500 refugees in Suffolk, most of whom live in Ipswich. In addition, there are nearly 100 asylum seekers housed in Ipswich under the government's 'dispersal' scheme. The Suffolk Refugee Association is there to provide these people with advice and support. Funded by grants and donations, the association also helps with education, employment and access to immigration advice, housing, utilities etc. At the society's November meeting, the association's Manager, Rebecca Crerar, will talk about the range of its work and the importance of integrating refugee families into their new surroundings. The talk will be on Wednesday 3rd November at 7:30pm and is entitled 'Asylum in Suffolk'. Our December talk will be given by Norman Porter, churchwarden of St Mary's Great Bealings. It's not long since the

two St Mary's (Woodbridge and Gt Bealings) joined together and Norman is extremely wellinformed about the historical links between the two places and their parish churches. He'll talk about these fascinating links under the title 'Threads of History' on Wednesday 1st December at 7:30pm. Woodbridge Society meetings take place in the school hall of Woodbridge Preparatory School (The Abbey), entrance and car parking off Cumberland Street. Under current circumstances, it may be necessary to hold these meetings online via Zoom. For up-to-date information, please check the Society's website (www.woodbridgesociety.org. uk) or email: info@woodbridgesociety.org.uk Meetings are open all and visitors are asked to donate £5.

Manager of The Hearing Care Centre) said: "The quizzes we hold every year are a real highlight for us and such a great evening. It'll be almost two years to the day since we held our last quiz night and we can't wait to see all our supporters again!" BBC Radio Suffolk Breakfast Show presenter Mark Murphy who will help co-host the event said: "Pull your friends and family together, round up a group of your colleagues at work or even come along with a local group or organisation that you're a member of. We really need your support to help raise money for this fantastic cause!" Tickets are expected to sellout fast so organisers are advising interested teams to book early to avoid disappointment. One of the biggest trivia events in the region is making a welcome return to help raise money for this year's BBC Children in Need appeal. The Hearing Care Centre (a family-run hearing care company with twenty-four centres across East Anglia) had up until last year, been organising charity quiz nights twice a year, raising thousands of pounds of local and national charities. The Big Suffolk Quiz night will return on Sunday 14th November 2021, at Trinity Park in Ipswich, with a 7pm start. Teams can include between 4-6 members and entry is £5 per person. To ensure adequate social-distancing between tables, numbers will be limited. Thanks to generous support from local businesses, there are lots of cash prizes to be won and additional prizes can also be won in a giant prize draw. Matthew Coward (Operations

then the team here at Greenfuture are on hand to help. There are numerous systems available ranging from ground and air source heat pumps as well as solar options so it can be a bit overwhelming. Don't stress too much about this as the team here are happy to offer advice on what the best system would be for each individual property and the needs of those living or working there. Any of these options will significantly reduce your carbon footprint as well as your monthly bills and in some cases you can generate income thanks to the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI). You'll also be less dependent on large energy companies and in the current climate, that is surely no bad thing! One of the more recent - and growing - areas of the business is the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging points. Greenfuture is one of the UK's leading experts in this field and work across East Anglia offering installation, repair, servicing and maintenance of EV charging points. Again, the benefits are clear for all to see and as vehicle manufactures continue to increase the range of hybrid and electric vehicles on the market it is surely only a matter of time before we all have EV charging points at greenfenergy

home and work. Why not get ahead of the curve? In addition to the larger and more eye-catching work that Greenfuture carry out the team are also available for smaller jobs and maintenance work such as fixing showers or changing light switches. Greenfuture work with both commercial and domestic clients across the region and get much of their work through repeat business and word of mouth, this says all you need to know about not only the quality of the work but also the customer service. The team are always looking forward and are at the forefront of available technology in this ever-changing industry. In the short term, you can benefit from lower bills, however the long-term environmental benefits are surely the big win for all of us. If you're interested in learning more about renewable energy sources and the services that Greenfuture Energy offer, please visit the website at www.greenfuture energy.co.uk email: enquiries@ greenfuture energy.co.uk or call 01728 604368.

Established in 2011 by Dick Plant, Richard Plant, Mark Gudgin and Paul Robinson, Greenfuture Energy is now celebrating a decade in business. Last year, Rylan Sibley and Leo Smith were promoted to Directors of Greenfuture. Over the last decade, the business has become established as a leading name in the renewable energy, electrical and plumbing sector. The beauty of this company is that the team handle everything in-house. If a particular job requires more than one trade Greenfuture can look after building, electrical and plumbing work to give the client peace of mind that the whole job is being dealt with by one, professional and qualified organisation. So, what do Greenfuture do? The name is a giveaway really, but there is a bit more to this business than meets the eye. Over the last few years, green and renewable energy had been at the forefront of our minds as we become more and more aware of both environmental and economical benefits. If you're due a heating upgrade or are looking to replace an old and inefficient boiler system,

WLOG

News from Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats Protection November 2021

Local musical theatre groups unite to return to the stage After months of not being able to do what they love best, the award-winning youth musical theatre group Rising Stars have teamed up with their sister group WLOG to create a show celebrating the reopening of theatres and live performances. The result is 'Curtain Up' which will be staged nightly at 7:30pm from Wednesday 20th to Saturday 23rd October at Beccles Public Hall and Theatre. Helen Steed (Chair of Rising Stars) explained how difficult the past eighteen months have been for the Beccles-based group. "Our production of 'Spamalot' was cancelled just before opening night in March 2020 when theatres closed and the first lockdown started. It was huge blow to us, both financially and emotionally, as performing together formed a large part of our wellbeing and social lives. When we were finally allowed to meet up again to restart rehearsals, we were determined to perform something uplifting and upbeat to help raise everyone's spirits. Sharing the stage with

WLOG has been a fantastic experience. Combining our talents and experience has packed 'Curtain Up' with songs and dances from our favourite musicals, including Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors, Starlight Express, Newsies, Thoroughly Modern Millie and All Shook Up. We're so looking forward to welcoming audiences back to the theatre and seeing them leave with smiles on their faces." As well as putting the final touches to 'Curtain Up', Rising Stars have announced that their March 2022 production will be the fun-filled musical 'Legally Blonde'. Open auditions will be held in early November 2021 and talented performers aged 12-19 are invited to apply. Visit their website for more details and to book an audition slot. Tickets for 'Curtain Up' are £10 for adults and £8 for under 18s and can be purchased from the Beccles Public Hall Box Office in person, by phoning 01502 770060 or online. Saxmundham Museum 'Our Story of Saxmundham', a newly published book, describes how the East Suffolk town has grown over the centuries, from its earliest beginnings as a small Saxon settlement, to its emergence as a thriving market town and its continued development as an important East Suffolk hub. A collaborative project from long time Saxmundham residents Richard and Viv Wills Crisp and Kevin and Jane Gale, the book contains fascinating historical photographs and insightful stories and anecdotes. It's truly a fascinating read for all ages. Saxmundham Museum is hosting a morning to launch

the publication of this exciting new book on Saturday 23rd October from 10am-1pm. It'll be an opportunity for everyone to meet the people behind the book, which will be essential reading for anyone with Saxmundham connections.

There were only 4 rain days (2 very minimal) during the first 26 as high pressure had dominated our weather pattern. However, active fronts from the Atlantic eventually broke through and rain was noted on the remaining 4 days (2 with light showers) but included the wettest day of the month (0.40" on 28th) which was responsible for half of the month's total. The 1st, 2nd and the early hours of 5th (credited to 4th) October felt the full effects from the change in conditions, those days combined to record nearly one and three quarters inches of rainfall. Most of us would've noticed Saturday afternoon of 2nd October was particularly Autumnal, with very strong south-easterly winds and a period of moderate rainfall. With three quarters of 2021 completed, 17.86" of rainfall has been recorded so far, well on course to achieve longterm average (25.60" being the year's average). Especially with the months of October, November and December to come, traditionally the 3 wettest on average. There shouldn't be any possible worries about water restrictions in 2022 due to poor rainfall totals. These have been well addressed so far this year despite drier than average months such as this reported on.

September overall was very dry with somewhat aboveaverage temperatures. The mean temperature overall was at 2C above the long-term average and was the warmest for the month since 2016 and the third warmest on my entire 54 year record. The figures would've been even more impressive, but for the 2 coolest days by some distance on the 29th and 30th recording maximum temperatures of 15.1C and 16.5C respectively. The 17.2C mean temperature exceeded the previous month (August) figure of 16.9C making this only the 2nd instance of September warmer than August in the same year. The previous example was 2006, September mean (18.2C), while August's mean was just 17.0C. 21 days during the month recorded 20C or better. In fact, the highest being the 2 warmest September days (28.3C on 7th and 27.3C on 9th) since 2013 were both in excess of August's high (26.3C). There have only been 4 previous

The cast of Rising Stars at rehearsal

We hope to see many of our supporters (old and new) at our Christmas Fair in the Reydon Village Hall, Lowestoft Road, Southwold on November 13th, 2021. In a year when we've had restricted fundraising opportunities, we're greatly looking forward to catching up with everyone. Do come along to find Christmas gifts for your friends, family and for your feline companions. Christmas cards, calendars, diaries, raffle, tombola and lots more will be on offer! You'll also be able to have a snack and chat over a cup of tea or coffee too. Cat care: Make sure your cat is safe outside in the cold • Cats may still want to brave even the coldest temperatures. If your cat has access to the outdoors, provide them with a shelter to ensure they're safe. A sturdy cardboard box covered in plastic sheeting is ideal. • If you have a cat flap, make sure your cat can get in and out. Heavy snowfall or ice might result in the cat flap becoming stuck, or blocked. • Ensure that your cat has plenty of fresh water indoors, in case any outside sources freeze. • Always make sure your cat comes inside at night, locking the catflap once they're in. Provide them with warm, comfortable, safe places to sleep and a litter tray. • Regularly check sheds, outhouses and garages to ensure your cat isn't locked inside. Look before you lock! • If your cat has come in from the snow, wipe off any road grit, salt, or anything that might stick to their paws and fur. • Screen-off open fireplaces and always supervise your cat if you have lit a fire. • Make sure your cat is microchipped, and the details are

"Remember then: Memories of 1946-1969 and how to record your own" - a talk by Dr Janet Few Monday 15th November at 7:30pm on Zoom. Recalling life in Britain during the pivotal period between 1946 and 1969, Dr Janet Few describes the results of a project during which eighty women recorded their memories of a time when we moved from liberty bodices to mini skirts and from ration books to ready meals. We saw the emergence of youth culture, the comprehensive education system, conspicuous consumerism and feminism. Join us on Zoom to either reminisce or discover what life was like at the time. This talk is much more than just a collection of memories. The techniques described will help both men and women, of all ages, to start writing reminiscences of their own. An experienced family, social and community historian, Janet is now in her fourth decade

of family and local history research, and lectures regularly on these subjects. A qualified family historian, Janet has been involved in family history at a national level. She was Education Liaison Officer for the Federation of Family History Societies for several years, and has acted as the local agent for several national research companies, and has worked with the 'Who Do You Think You Are?' programme. She's also an accomplished, prizewinning author. As her alter ego (Mistress Agnes) Janet spends time living in the seventeenth century, where she imparts information about life in the time of the English Civil War. • www.thehistoryinterpreter. wordpress.com • www.familyhistoryfederation. com/family-history-speakernorth-devon-janet-few • https://amzn.to/2WDfEss

This Zoom-based event is free to members, but is also available to non-members at a cost of £3. If you wish to 'attend', please register via our website www. avsfhg.org.uk/events/book/ and you'll be sent joining instructions. Don't leave it too late as places are filling up fast! However, at a cost of £6 for a full year's membership, why not consider signing up with this growing band of family history enthusiasts now? Membership taken out after October 1st lasts until the following December. Further programme: December 13th: Denise Bates 'Forenames and What They Reveal about Ancestors' at 7:30pm on Zoom.

13-year-old Matt Carter from Halesworth is one of ABC Radio's familiar voices every Saturday morning. Here, he tells us why he got involved with ABC Radio. This time last year, while putting together 'shows' at home during lockdown, I'd never had dreamed of being a presenter on the radio, but when my dad saw an advert for a new community

radio station being launched, he contacted them and asked if I might be able to get involved and after a few Zoom chats, I was offered my very own weekly slot! As they say, the rest is history and here I am, presenting a twenty-minute slot on ABC Radio every Saturday morning and I absolutely love it! I couldn't be more excited

With HMRC recently having struck a deal with Air BnB to obtain the income details of all their 225,000 UK hosts, if you have current or historic undeclared rental income, you really should bring your affairs up-to-date and declare any issues sooner rather than later. Largely the only tax "amnesty" that HMRC are currently running is the Let Property Campaign (LPC). This is targeted at all landlords and was introduced with a blaze of publicity using billboards, TV and radio advertising a few years ago. The LPC enables landlords to sort out historic irregularities or omissions with a lower penalty regime available - provided you tell them before they contact you about it. How does the LPC work? You (or a tax advisor on your behalf) will need to contact HMRC to advise them of your intention to declare under the LPC which then starts a ninetyday clock to provide details of

the income and expenses and calculate the tax due on the formal declaration itself. Penalties and interest are "self-assessed", although HMRC do give very strong guidance as to what rates of penalty they will consider acceptable. If the issue is classed as a "careless mistake" (for example, including capital repayments when claiming mortgage interest relief), you may only need to go back six years and any penalty may be negligible. If however, the issue is that you never told HMRC in the first place, the full twentyyears may be appropriate and the penalty higher. By voluntarily declaring and correcting your affairs, the ultimate penalty will always be lower than if HMRC contact you about it first. Occasional landlords may ultimately not need the LPC. With the annual £1,000 rental allowance, or the £7,500 rent-aroom allowance (available only if any period of letting of your main home overlaps in full or in part

with your own occupancy) there may not ultimately be any tax due. However, you should still notify HMRC of the rental income as it's up to HMRC to allow you not to file tax returns, not for you to decide arbitrarily not to tell them in the first place. Professional advice is essential. Hope this helps! For further information, please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) on: robin. beadle@ensors.co.uk. Specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.

Sizewell C £250m boost to Suffolk from the start of construction • Up to £100m for the environment made up of £78m for an environmental body and £22m for habitat creation and mitigation. • £23m community fund administered by Suffolk Community Foundation. • Up to £22m for employment and skills. • Multimillion investment in improvements to Suffolk's infrastructure. The public examination of the Sizewell C project has now closed. Both Suffolk County Council and East Suffolk Council have stated their position on the proposals and while there are still some issues to work on, agreement has been reached with the councils, emergency services and other recipients including the RSPB and National Trust on the associated funds the project will deliver locally. The funding programme, known as the Deed of Obligation, has been agreed as part of the planning process to mitigate impacts and compensate for the construction and in some cases into the operational phases whilst ensuring legacy benefits for local communities for decades to come.

As part of building Suffolk's new power station a package of over £250m has now been allocated to key areas covering: Employment and skills - £22m Up to £22m has been allocated to a far-reaching programme of work with Further Education colleges and training organisations, including bursaries for those struggling to access education and new centres of excellence to deliver the skills needed to work on Sizewell. Environment - £100m The local natural environment will also benefit from up to £22m through investment in projects that will mitigate the landscape impacts, whilst at the same time further increasing biodiversity on Suffolk's heritage coast and the creation of habitat where wildlife can thrive. Sizewell C ecologists have already successfully created Aldhurst farm in Leiston along with other habitat creation in surrounding areas, which are now home to a range of wildlife enjoying lagoons and reed beds, lowland heath, heather, acid grassland and wet grassland which are characteristic of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths. Separately, A further £78m

has also been agreed for an independent Environmental Body to enhance the area's rich landscape. Community Fund - £23m A special fund for community projects of £23m will be administered by Suffolk Community Foundation, the Suffolk local authorities, community representatives and Sizewell C to ensure that local villages and groups can access funds which will limit the impacts of construction but also enhance the environmental, social and economic wellbeing of East Suffolk Taken together with the legacy of infrastructure improvements that the project will deliver, the overall investment aimed at limiting impacts and benefitting the local community will exceed that committed to in the Deed of Obligation. Alongside this, the Sizewell C Consortium, the group representing the 200 leading organisations bringing forward the construction of new nuclear power stations, has estimated the direct benefit of the building programme to the Suffolk economy will be £2bn and £4.5bn

to the wider East of England region. Humphrey Cadoux Hudson, Sizewell C Managing Director, said: "I am excited by the opportunities Sizewell C presents and I am determined that the local communities will benefit as much as possible from the opportunities presented by the project. Impacts of the construction phase will be minimised, and we will continue to work with local councils to deliver this. Sizewell C offers opportunities for all, the range of skills we need are diverse and we want a workforce that reflects society. With this funding package in place, we can ensure the project will help level up the county so that those most in need can access training to develop skills for rewarding local jobs and provide an incentive for people to live and work locally." The Planning Inspectorate now has 3 months to make a recommendation to the Secretary of State with a final planning decision expected to be published in April 2022. Woodbridge Museum rocks! Meeting of the Martlesham "Woodbridge Museum rocks" was the verdict of one young visitor written in the family corner comments book. Since the easing of lockdown, the museum has achieved record numbers of visitors, achieving over 10,000 by the middle of August. In our case, the weather hasn't been a problem. If it was sunny, visitors were out and about and popped in. If it rained, we provided a welcome refuge. Our young visitor's verdict was echoed by many who came through the doors. There were entries in the visitors book from far and near: "A nice way to pass the trip in Woodbridge and to see local history.", "A lovely museum, excellent displays. Woodbridge is lucky to have such a place (and free entry!)", "Loved all the old photos of local people", "Outstanding memorabilia from the past. Staff so kind - beautifully presented. So

easy with a wheelchair". There were visits from local people sharing their memories of their childhood and stories of their grandparent's generation. Some had popped over the border from Essex and Hertfordshire while others were holidaying in the area, coming from the West-Country (escaping the holidaymakers in Dorset and Devon), from Derbyshire, Scotland and Wales. Overseas visitors came from new Jersey , Staten Island and Seattle in USA, the Netherlands, Bulgaria and, there is even a comment in Chinese. From the beginning of November, the museum will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30am to 15:30pm each day. The Stewards for the museum are provided by the Friends of Woodbridge Museum. October saw the return of the Friends of the Museum monthly talks, the first being given by Captain Alan Hill of the Salvation Army explaining the enormous amount of social work tat they do both in the country and world wide. It was quite a revelation to discover how wide-ranging their work is. The next meeting will be held in Woodbridge Community Hall on November 12th when Mandy Cox Osbourne will speak about The Royal British Legion. Doors will open at 2:30pm.

Woodbridge Probus He was three years old when Hitler was elected as chancellor in 1932 and we followed his fascinating tale of growing up in the Third Reich, and was at secondary school and a member of Hitler youth, trained and ready to fight when the war ended. Joachim Balk (now deceased) was a friend of member Peter Boot Smith, who read his story for us. Our next lunch is on Monday November 1st, when our speaker will be Simon Gladas from Bentwaters Cold War Museum, on the history of RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge 1943-

1993, covering the early RAF period and the forty-two years that the US Air Force operated from the twin bases. A story I've never heard and I eagerly look forward to his talk. For myself, I must rave about the desert at lunch, treacle tart and ice cream. Out of this world! Woodbridge Golf Club is our lovely venue. 12:15pm for a drink and get together before lunch, followed by our speaker. www.woodbridgeprobus.org. uk will tell you all about us, or you can call our secretary Roger Brown 07881 627591. Bright Stars

Would you like to receive our activity sheets for pre-school aged children? Bright Stars normally runs free, fun activity sessions for pre-school-age children with their parents/grandparents/friends/ family/carers at St Michael's Church Centre, Martlesham Heath, on the 2nd and 4th Monday mornings of each month during term-time. They usually involve singing, games, making crafts to take home and telling stories from the Bible.
