has become a priority. Lottery funding for therapists ceased in 2020 and this service now has to be provided from core funding. Together with daily homecare (the demand for which has increased), financial advice and other practical support services, the charity offers an impressive range of activities for clients, including cooking, arts and crafts, woodwork, basic skills, gym, dancing, cognitive games, tenpin bowling, swimming, music and more. Headway is based in Epsilon House which is not an ideal location. However, there are plans to have a purpose-built centre that will be more appropriate to the needs of their clients, but funding and planning permissions are proving troublesome and achieving the new centre may take some time. Terry asked members to tell people they knew who may have an acquired brain injury and are not aware of the charity, to get in touch with them. The website address is: www.headwaysuffolk. org.uk. President Sally Pearson, who also has personal experience of the charity, and Woodbridge IW members are pleased to support Headway as the Club's main charity for 2021/22. In order to support Headway and other charities, the club is hoping to be able to hold various fundraising events throughout 2021/22. Plans are in place for our annual, popular quiz at Woodbridge Community Hall on February 25th 2022, and it's
hoped to hold a Spring Fashion Show. Both of these events will be advertised in due course, subject to the Covid restrictions pertaining at the time. Members also agreed to support the Stroke Association (our East Anglian District Chairman's Charity) and The British Heart Foundation (the National Association President's Charity) as well as the overseas charity, 'School in a Bag', that provides children with the essentials required to be able to attend school. 174770 We continue to collect mobile phones, magazines, puzzles, glasses, trimmed stamps, and knitted teddies, and also to knit blanket squares and hats for the Seaman's Mission. It was reported that it was hoped that the monthly Memory Café run in conjunction with the two Rotary Clubs in Woodbridge and held at Woodbridge FC might be held later in September, and those people who normally attend would be contacted with up-todate information. 169017 It was thanks to technology and our Immediate Past President, Jan Whitaker, who had wrestled with, and grasped, the intricacies ALAN SMART ELECTRICAL & MAINTENANCE SERVICES of Zoom that the Club had ELECSA FULL SCOPE PART P APPROVED. survived lockdown, but, albeit ELECTRICAL CONTRACTING, DOMESTIC, LIGHT being sensible and following COMMERCIAL, MAINTENANCE, FAULT FINDING. Our September speaker congratulated members on meeting 'IRL'! Not being "down with the young people", none of us knew what that meant! Terry Hunt (a retired Editor of the East Anglian Daily Times) reliably informed us that it means 'in real life'. So yes, our 2021/22 President Sally Pearson, and club members were relieved and pleased to be back meeting 'IRL'. Tragedy can strike a family at any time and sometimes finding appropriate support and advice can be difficult. Therefore, it was pleasing to hear Terry Hunt speak to us in his role as Vice-Chair and Ambassador for Headway (the charity that supports people with acquired brain injuries) and also helps their families and friends. The tragedy of a brain injury can be acquired in many ways, e.g. stroke, brain tumour, dementia, multiple sclerosis and more, and Terry spoke movingly of his personal experience of the compassion and support provided by the charity when two separate heartbreaking events affected his family. He told us of the CEO, Helen Fairweather, who's the mainstay of Headway Suffolk and of her tremendous work ethos and compassion that radiate throughout the charity creating a supportive and caring culture. Headway adapted well to the changed circumstances brought about by Covid in order to provide support to their clients. However (as is the case for most charities) financing their activities can be difficult. Whilst during the pandemic some grants were received from various sources, more recently, once again, the need for funding

Financial focus on...
During lockdown, Liz Tinker and Susie Hammond worked on a variety of creative projects, pushing their own boundaries and lifting their spirits. "It gave us the time to experiment. This helped us stave off the blues and keep a positive direction!" Susie said: "We wanted to have a fair to show our work alongside local fellow artists and crafters. We have a variety of sculptures, lighting, prints, textiles, ceramics, homeware, knitting, felt hats, and jewellery for sale." A great opportunity for finding that unique gift, some inspirations, along with fabulous cake and refreshments from Vashti Mouncer, Dennington Neathouse. The Blaxhall October Art and Craft Fair is at Blaxhall Village Hall, IP12 2DX on October 16th and 17th from 10am-5pm. Entry and parking is free. Maps and photos on Facebook page.
under age 25 created by the parent's Will or intestacy or by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme. Additionally, most pension scheme, retirement annuity, charitable trusts and most life policies held on trust are exempt from the new requirements, as are funds held as part of a 'commercial' business transaction for brief periods (eg under Escrow). Remember if the trust has had a tax liability (or is expecting one imminently), it should already be recorded on the TRS. Most commonly, the new registration rules will affect Will Trusts whereby one spouse left assets in trust for the survivor's use as part of standard Will
planning made prior to Gordon Brown's changes in 2006. Trusts created as part of divorce planning (for example, to allow one party the use of an asset but ensuring that ultimate ownership passes to, say, children) are also caught. Indeed, the new rules will require registration of something as simple as a Bare Trust. Registration must be done online either by the trustees or their agents and once completed, there is a legal responsibility to keep the TRS up to date. For further information, please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) on email: robin.beadle@ensors. co.uk.

The HMRC Trust Registration Service (TRS) has now been in existence since 2017 but until now, has largely been concerning itself with those trusts that have a tax liability. From the autumn of 2021, however, the TRS will be extended to all express trusts (with few exceptions) even if there's no tax liability or other reporting requirement. (This will also include non-UK resident trusts if they hold UK land or property). If a non-tax paying trust has not already registered, it'll have twelve months from the date that the online system goes live (September 2021) in which to do so. Unless your trust, settlement or arrangement falls into one of the very few exclusions below, you'll need to consider registration. The current list of exclusions from the new registration requirement only includes: • Co-ownership trusts where assets are held as "tenants-incommon" • Trusts created from a person's Will - Provided that all assets are paid out within two years of death • "Pilot" trusts of less than £100 in value which were created before 6th October 2020 • Trusts for bereaved children under age 18 or young adults

Woodbridge Cruising Club With the advent of autumn, the club cruises draw to a close, but there's a wealth of social events to tempt and entice members. Onshore activities are an important part of the club's calendar, and the annual summer barbecue was well attended, as over sixty members enjoyed catching up at the club's riverside premises. The cruise dinner is planned at the Royal Harwich Yacht Club, the laying up supper will be held at the club in October, when club walks are also resuming, as are the Wednesday suppers. Other activities include MAGs (the Monday Afternoon Group Get Together), which is an informal gathering for all members with afternoon tea, and the Wednesday morning maintenance parties, again with coffee and cakes. The last cruises of the season were Walton Pond, Blackwater, Ramsgate and the Four Rivers. If you fancy sailing in company, why
not join Woodbridge Cruising Club whether you own a yacht or motorboat. Cruises are organised by club members and thanks are due to everyone who organised them. The Blackwater Cruise was organised by John and Diana, and all fourteen boats had a fantastic trip with light winds. The cruise visited Brightlingsea, Heybridge, Bradwell, and West Mersea. Onshore entertainment included Colne Yacht Club's excellent dinner, a boat trip up the Colne to Rowhedge for lunch, a now traditional Kubb match (a Scandinavian game knocking down skittles by throwing wooden sticks). Members also enjoyed canal trips, barbecues, musical entertainment, pub dinners, and drinks in the West Mersea Yacht Club. The return passage was helped by a lively NW breeze which, combined with a favourable tide, enabled all to return to Harwich and onward to
News from Dunwich Heath this summer So the Summer holidays were as busy as ever for us and it was fantastic to have so many families and young people here enjoying the walks on the heath, trails and children's activities. The last was really well attended, with some fascinating creatures discovered. Two particular highlights from the depths of the pond during the pond dipping were a Great Diving Beetle larvae and no less than three Water Scorpions! Fearsome looking creatures and excellent predators, but the children were amazed rather than scared! The heather really came to the party this year, with the wet weather in July giving the blooms that extra oomph to create a glorious carpet of purple, as you can see from the picture. Our visitors were astounded, and in some cases a little emotional, at just how beautiful it was! The
home ports in record time. Five yachts participated in the further afield Ramsgate cruise, Ramsgate being the first harbour, with welcome safe arrival drinks on Aberration, and a meal ashore. Members enjoyed a rest day, exploring Broadstairs or Ramsgate, followed by an Italian meal, before setting sail to Queensborough - with delightful local markets to explore, trips to the Isle of Sheppy, and a welcoming yacht club. Boats then set sail for a night in Brightlingsea, before returning home. Thanks to the cruise captain Andy, who organised a great cruise, which everyone enjoyed. The club is not solely nautical activities, and there are a wide range of events throughout the year (nautical and land-based). If you're tempted by the activities, do check out the club website where full details are found: www.woodbridgecruisingclub. org. New members are always welcome, whether you own a motorboat or yacht or are just tempted by the club's activities.
heather is past its peak now, though still quite beautiful, so if you haven't seen it yet, you really must. In other news, our summer migrant species are heading for warmer climes, but we're now welcoming our winter migrants such as the Hen Harrier and the Crossbill. We can also look forward to the 'Rut' getting underway soon. It won't be long before the heath will ring with the eerie bellowing of stags proclaiming their territories... Or is that the bells of Dunwich's lost churches?

As Autumn heralds the return of many popular events, the Friends of Woodbridge Library host the first (for a long time) live poetry reading. We welcome Clare Best and Andre Mangeot on Thursday 21st October at 7:30pm. Clare has published six volumes of poetry, the most recent of which is 'Each Other (Waterloo, 2019)'. She's frequently worked with visual artists and last year held a Fellowship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she collaborated on operas and other vocal projects. She lives up the road on the edge of Tunstall Forest. Andre has three poetry collections to his name and his work has appeared in the Spectator, New Statesman and Times Literary Supplement. He's also published a couple of books of short stories. A former resident of Woodbridge, he now lives in Cambridge. Seats for the event are £8 (students £4) which includes an interval drink. To book your seats, please call the Library on 01394 330855. There will also be the opportunity to buy collections of their work.

The Leiston Works Railway (LWR) are delighted to announce their next event, which is the Leiston Works Railway Model Railway Show. This event is taking place at the Sizewell Sports and Social Club in Leiston on Saturday 23rd October, 2021. It's been organised for this date as it's close to the 55th anniversary of the withdrawal of passenger services to Leiston, Thorpeness and Aldeburgh. The last official passenger service left Aldeburgh on September 10th, 1966. The track itself was actually left down until the spring of 1968 when they started to lift it. The show will be in the main hall of the venue and will be open from 10am-4pm. In the hall, there will be a selection of model railway layouts. The LWR will also take the opportunity to bring everyone up to date with an exhibition showing the progress that's been made so far with the project. Also available, to help with LWR funds, will be railway books and magazines to purchase at reasonable prices. The Mid Suffolk Light Railway and the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Society will also be bringing their stands to show their latest progress. Weather permitting, the
Matt Bowles is one of ABC Radio's familiar voices every weekend. Here, he tells us all about his programme and why he got involved with Alde and Blyth Community Radio. "I've always been interested in radio and apart from a couple of sessions at a hospital radio with a couple of mates, I've never done anything about it. That was, until I saw a post on Facebook seeking people who were interested in joining the Alde and Blyth Community Radio team, so I jumped at it! I warned Wayne Burns that I'm very much an old dog and new tricks don't come easy, to which he replied "it's just like driving a car" but in reality, it's like flying a helicopter whilst trying to keep your instructor amused! Building the show was fun, but challenging and I don't know if I could have done it all without some wise experienced words from Wayne and Jo Baker (my co-host). She's been brilliant and helps out a lot with the content and she's great to bounce off - on and off air. We're now nearly three months
in on ABC The Full English Breakfast (8am-10am on a Saturday morning in case you didn't know) and our confidence has really grown. We try and keep it humorous and light hearted and hope it's a nice way to ease in to the weekend. Live radio is such a buzz, whether you've got one listener or a million of them, and talking of listeners, ours are fantastic with their contributions and it's great to read their comments every week." If you want to get in touch with us anytime, then visit: www. abcradio.co.uk or our Facebook page 'Abcradio Thefullenglish' and send a friend request so you won't miss a thing. Matt presents 'The Full English Breakfast' every Saturday morning between 8am-10am and can be heard at: www.abcradio. co.uk and via Amazon Alexa.

ow is the time to think about your child's N schooling for the 2022/23 academic year.
When selecting a school you need to: • Consider what is right for your child and family • Research the schools in your local area and gather information • Visit the schools and meet the staff – nothing beats seeing the environment and speaking with the teachers.
Student intake for Year 7 for September 2022 has increased yet again, being oversubscribed for the second consecutive year from parents’ first choices alone. We will expand our ever-increasing transport plan to deliver on the promise to provide costeffective transport for all of our families. Whether this is late summer or early autumn sun, you could be forgiven for thinking that Christmas is still months away. However, as you are now reading your October edition of the Community News, time is ticking by and the days are counting down towards that time of year. Last year was a strange Christmas to say the least. Whilst we are not back to 'normal' just yet, this year is looking like the festive season we all know and love. A chance to get together with family, friends and colleagues and have some good old-fashioned fun. Nothing says Christmas like getting around the dinner table and enjoying some great food and drink. If you don’t fancy all the prep, cooking and washing up then why not take advantage of the many fabulous pubs, restaurants and hotels we have in the area. Over the next couple of months you can find out about what some of the local venues are going to be offering over the festive period here in the Community News. Tables are sure to book up quickly so get ahead of the game and reserve your table nice and early to avoid disappointment.

Summer is drawing to a close and autumn is just around the corner... What a perfect time to think about planting! The soil is warm and the autumn rains will get plants established before the winter sets in. It's also a good time to take stock of your garden and think about any changes or plans you want to make. If you're planting in lawns, cut out three sides of a square and lift back the turf, put in a few bulbs and then firm the turf back again. As it's bulb season, you could also plant hyacinth bulbs in pots, by mid-September, so that you have a glorious Christmas display, creating a scented centrepiece or gift for gardening friends and family. Once the hyacinths are planted in a pot, put in a dark cool place (a garage or shed) for ten to twelve weeks and then bring

September is when autumn begins to creep into your garden, but that doesn't mean it's time to let it all go to seed - jobs for this month suggested by the Royal Horticultural Society include: • Look after your lawn - weed it and seed it • Pick and harvest summer fruits • Bring tender houseplants inside • Continue to sow vegetables • Clear out the greenhouse • Collect and sow seeds gathered from plants in the garden • Plant spring flowering bulbs

Worlingham Community Facility
The long and winding road hoped that construction work will commence during 2022. One important element of the contract between the trustees and Badger is that the new Facility must be completed before the last phase of the nineteen homes is completed and sold. Residents of Worlingham may well be aware that the former primary school was closed in 2013 and eventually demolished in 2015. Although the plot of land has remained vacant during this time, regular meetings of the trustees have been taking place, as well as negotiations with solicitors, Worlingham Parish Council, East Suffolk Council, Suffolk County Council and latterly Badger Homes. It's truly been, in the words of Paul McCartney a "long and winding road".
News from Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats Protection October 2021
Our second fundraising event of the year was at the fabulous Framlingham Country Fair in August. It was a very successful event for us and our team of volunteers had a lovely two days meeting lots of supporters, old and new. The 'Soft Toy Everyone's a Winner' tombola was extremely popular and we're now looking for more soft toys to use for fundraising at future events. If you have soft toys in good condition that you'd like to donate, please contact us by email: fundraising@ framandsax.cats.org.uk or call us on the branch number. Toys must have a CE label. Thank you. Cat care: Destructive behaviours: The idiosyncratic habits of felines are often what attract us to them! Occasionally though, their behaviour can become destructive; scratching and clawing things they shouldn't, for example, or shredding curtains or a favourite item of clothing. Scratching helps cats shed their claw sheaths. This means they're helping you take care of them, as their claws will need less trimming. Scratching also leaves a visible and chemical
scent marker that identifies their territory. Cats that have access outdoors will use trees or fence posts to leave scent markers which proclaim their province. The scent marking may continue indoors too. Providing a satisfying alternative for your cat will discourage them from ripping through your precious household items. Try fabric or carpet offcuts, bark-covered logs, stout wooden posts or sisal fibre. Once your cat has discovered these fun, easy-to-scratch objects, they're less likely to go back to your furniture. Try out various locations for their scratching toys, trying both vertical and horizontal scratching posts. In the meantime, cover the areas you don't want damaged with smooth plastic or foil. Don't forget, if you think your cat is a little too destructive, get them checked over by your vet to ensure there is no underlying medical problem. Looking for a home: This is Shadow (pictured), a tiny, gentle little girl who's about two years old. She's been spayed, fully vaccinated and is ready to start a new life. Shadow loves fuss and to be groomed but does not
enjoy be picked up. She's come from a farm environment and would appreciate a quiet home with a garden and a loving owner. If you can offer Shadow her ideal home, please call us. See our website: www. framandsax.cats.org.uk or telephone 01728 723499 for more information about adopting cats in our care, how to become a member of the branch, event dates, neutering, cat-care leaflets, how to become a volunteer fundraiser or fosterer, make a donation and other ways you can support us. News from Woodbridge Riverside Trust The Tapestry Project Cake Sale 25th September, 2pm-5pm in The John Gibbins Gallery at Longshed. About two years ago, an idea started to take shape... It'd be wonderful to create a Tapestry to tell the story of the Sutton Hoo Burial Ship and of the local environs. Now, two years on, we have thirty-five tapesters bringing that idea to life. Thirty panels, each 3'x4', will illustrate the Ghost Ship's history, taking in elements of the history of Woodbridge and the river Deben, with the final panels featuring the construction, launch and sea trials of the replica ship currently being built by our sister charity, the Sutton Hoo Ship's Company. So far, nine tapestries are (or very nearly) completed. All thirty tapestries will need framing in due course to protect them, and we need to raise funds for that. The Arts Society of Woodbridge has kindly gifted money for six frames, and a private donor for one more, so twenty-three to go! Several tapestry panels will be on show at the Cake Sale, so do join us if you can, enjoy cake or savouries with a cuppa, or buy
some to take home (or both!) and help to support this amazing project. Deben Discoveries: Paintings and Pictures 23rd-31st October in the John Gibbins Gallery. This is a personal story linked to the story of the beautiful river Deben. Dr Dorothy Winterbon Wells (nee Smith) owned a converted boat cabin on stilts, know as The Puritan, at Felixstowe Ferry. The whole family would holiday there every summer. During the summers of 1966 and 1967, whilst staying at The Puritan, she decided to watercolour paint the river Deben from both banks on two very long scrolls of plain wallpaper. She walked the river banks and used a canoe or small dingy to access the different locations. Fiftyfour years on, these remarkable paintings, kindly loaned to us by her daughter Marion and her son Ed, will form the centrepiece of a celebration of the Deben in art. You'll be able to walk between the two linear pictures seeing both sides of the river. The exhibition will also feature other privatelyowned works, as well as works by local artists and photographers.

It's been an extremely hectic but successful summer at Alde Valley Academy (AVA). Our wholehearted congratulations go to our Year 11 students who have performed remarkably well in their GCSE assessments despite the extreme disruption caused by the pandemic. Our students have worked tirelessly alongside our dedicated staff to produce the high quality assessment material which provided the evidence required for the Teacher Assessed Grades. The progress and academic outcomes of our students continues to rise year-on-year. September has seen an 'unusual' start to the academic year with all students receiving two Lateral Flow Device Covid-19 tests at the start of the term. This has been no mean feat with record numbers of students in the school. Year 7 was again oversubscribed and we welcome new students into all year groups on a daily basis. To accommodate our rapidly growing school population, we've recruited six new members of staff and have restructured the middle leadership of the school to ensure
that we're continuing to deliver a high quality education every lesson of every day. In order to add to our high quality teaching facilities, we've refurbished the top floor of the east block and turned it into the maths department. Over the summer holidays, we've relocated the OASIS centre and have created a new library to instil literacy and our love of reading at the centre of all that we do. Please come along and see our fantastic new facilities at our Open Evening on Tuesday 5th October, 2021. Due to Covid restrictions over the past eighteen months, we've had to postpone a number of 'celebration' events including the Year 11 Prom and the Presentation Evening. I'm delighted to say that we were able to give our Year 11 students a great send off at their Prom on August 11th and we're looking forward to our Presentation Evening at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on Tuesday 14th September 2021. Alde Valley Academy continues to be the 'School of Choice'. Dan Mayhew - Headteacher
Woodbridge Probus Our speaker at the September meeting was our Chairman Howard Davies, on forty years at the chalk face. From the peace of the Rhonda Valley to the rough side of Birmingham and a class of fourty-two, nine to ten year olds, was a pretty tough job for a brand new teacher. After three years, he had to temporarily give up because of his fathers serious accident and when ready to start again spotted an add for teachers in BAOR Germany where he spent the next twelve years in different schools. As he said, the best bit was automatically being a member of the officers
mess. We followed his journey to a happy conclusion of the head ship at Orford School and expressed our thanks and appreciation for a fascinating tale. Our next lunch is on Monday October 4th, 12:15pm at the Woodbridge Golf Club when our speaker will be member Kim Fisher. The beautiful title of his talk says it all: 'For the love of boats'. Kims life long passion has been boats (many of his own design) a talk we look forward to immensely. www. woodbridgeprobus.org.uk tells it all, or you can contact our secretary, Roger Brown on 07881 627591.

The Trustees of the Worlingham Community Facility are delighted to announce that, after eight years, they are now the owners of the vacant plot in Rectory Lane that once housed Worlingham Primary School, the land having been legally transferred from Suffolk County Council to the Trustees at the end of August. What happens next? The next stage involves local builders Badger Homes, with whom the trustees and their solicitors have been in contact for some time. In exchange for the plot of land, Badger will be contracted to build a single storey Community Facility as well as their own development of nineteen houses. The facility will take up approximately 25% of the available land, being situated

AGM HDCF held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in August. It was attended by representatives of the Council and various welfare organisations, as well as members of the public. One of the jobs was to elect the committee for the new year. The existing committee members were re-elected, with Teresa Fyfe continuing as the Chair and Dave Rich as Secretary. Paddy Cox took on the roll of Carers' Representative. Fundraising HDCF has to raise thousands of pounds annually to enable it to carry out the main function of supporting families. We're delighted to hear of two people
running marathons to help us. Danny Mitchell will be running on 3rd October in the Chelmsford Half-Marathon. Later this year, Karen Prime will be running a virtual marathon and will be donating some of the money raised to HDCF. We're truly grateful to both these people for running on our behalf. We do hope people will feel able to sponsor either of these local heroes, and we'll let you know how they get on. Thoroughfare stall The committee ran a stall in the Thoroughfare on August 14th. The aim was to publicise our work, and we were delighted at the interest from people coming
past. Danny was there with sponsor forms for his marathon. We also had cakes, CDs and books for sale, and with the picka-square competition we took £206 for funds. Many thanks to all who supported us. The basket of fruit was won by Irene Thomas. Film at The Cut Following the September showing of the Cut, the next film show will be in November, and it's likely to be Downton Abbey and will be shown on Wednesday 17th Nov. For further information regarding HDCF, please contact us via: information.hdcf@ btinternet.com or call 01986 875444.

New story chair at Ringsfield Primary School The Early Years children of Ringsfield Primary School have opportunities to explore, play and learn outside and most importantly have fun, living up to our outdoor play motto: Big, Noisy, Messy! Now in addition to our already wonderful outdoor learning space, we've been lucky enough to receive a surprise addition to the Early Years garden. The charity organisation Halesworth Men's Shed have made a special story
telling chair to go outside with all the other lovely activities. Executive Headteacher Vicky Allen says: "The children can now choose to sit and read a book or tell each other stories. What a lovely addition to our outdoor learning." Representatives from the Men's Shed said: "We were pleased to be able to support the children in our community. It gives us great pleasure to see the smiles on the faces of the children playing on and around it!"

school children has ensured that a sense of joy and community has remained central to the project. Waveney and Blyth Arts engaged with creative professionals and local adults and children to highlight the beauty and fragility of nature and threats to wildlife, by using powerful and complimentary creative language and art forms. By adapting after lockdown, we enabled people to remain connected with creative outlets through the worrying and isolating months of 2020 and 2021. Not only did the dancers and choir members rise to the challenges of dealing with new technology and developing their creative input in isolation, but the teachers also had to find ways of enabling the seventy-five children to learn new skills and contribute their own unique voices. Our volunteer team found different ways to collaborate, learn new

A very special live performance and launch of a creative film 'Spell Songs in the Green' by Halesworth Community Choir with New Cut Dancers and local schools in collaboration with Waveney and Blyth Arts is due for its premiere in October. Join this celebration of the community in Halesworth, the beauty of its local nature and wildlife which, like all nature, is now fragile and threatened. The project (initiated by Halesworth Community Choir with Waveney and Blyth Arts) was intended to culminate in a live community-based performance involving all participants on Halesworth Millennium Green in June 2021. Due to the impact of Covid, the outcome is now a unique creative film with a longlasting legacy. The process of filming and recording the singers, dancers and

Volunteers wanted skills, raise additional funds, adapt budgets and timescales, and recruit new expertise in the form of filmmakers and sound engineer. With funding support from local and regional bodies, we appointed local filmmakers Koan Arts. Working with the project's creative director and choir leader Janet Koralambe, the fourty-ninestrong Halesworth Community Choir had to learn the spell songs online and record them individually as Covid kept them apart. The dancers included fourteen adult dancers from Company Cut Dance under directorship of Caroline Mummery, and seventyfive pupils from Edgar Sewter and Wenhaston Primary schools. School teachers, working with our team, taught the children their spell songs and the movements that would accompany them. The youngsters also tie-dyed their own t-shirts for the filming. The project is grateful to funders Halesworth Town Council, East Suffolk Council, Suffolk Community Foundation, Halesworth Community Choir, Halesworth Festival Voices, and The Cut. The premiere of the film is October 9th at 5pm with a second showing at 7pm. This will be a sell-out occasion and is not to be missed! Tickets £5, under 18's free. www.waveneyandblytharts. com/events.
Following on from a year when many services closed down, bact community transport continued to provide an essential transport service taking passengers for their important medical appointments and vaccinations. Services have now opened up for transport for other purposes and bact are keen for new volunteers to join us to help achieve our vital goals in stopping people from being lonely and isolated. Do you have a few hours to spare and could help us? We operate a volunteer car service and accessible transport on our minibuses and wheelchair accessible vehicles. These operate around the towns/villages of Lowestoft, Kessingland, Loddon, Beccles, Bungay and all the surrounding villages in between. We need more volunteers to help us, be it as a car driver, or in one of our minibus/wheelchair accessible vehicles. We like to keep journeys as economical as possible for our passengers and so finding volunteers in your area would be great for local passengers. Our volunteer driver, Paul says: "Having joined bact a couple of years ago and having moved to the area, it's really helped me get to know the area and to meet lots of lovely people. Everyone is always so grateful. One day, you can be taking someone to the hospital, another day, taking a group for a day out and another, taking someone to a day centre. No matter what the trip, you always feel as though you're helping someone and
brightening up their day." Bact provides training and all drivers must be DBS checked which is free for all our volunteers. Mileage expenses are paid at 45p per mile and guaranteed personal satisfaction! Manager, Debbie Blowers said: "We've lost many of our volunteers over the last year for many different reasons and to ensure we can offer a good service to our registered users, it's imperative that we seek new volunteers to join our organisation. It's a very rewarding way to spend your time and you get to meet lovely people who are so thankful for help with transport. It can also go a long way to keeping your car on the road." Volunteer Recruitment Officer, Chloe Andrews said: "We have some very exciting projects lined up for the next year to really help many people get out and about again after the pandemic, but we really need some help from volunteers to do this. Please do get in touch with us to find out more." If you think you could help for even just a few hours a week or would like to find out more, then visit our website: www.bactcommunitytransport. org.uk or ring us on 01986 896896/895665. Alternatively, you can come and see us at: Harmony House, Hillside Road East, Bungay, Suffolk, NR35 1RX. (Open: Mon-Fri 9am-4pm).

Fascinating talks at the Woodbridge Society The Woodbridge Society's Autumn programme of talks opens with a visit from the new owner of the Woodbridge Boatyard, still referred to by many as Everson's. The Deben has seen many ebbs and flows over the centuries. Everson's at Jetty Lane has been part of the town's maritime activity since 1880, the firm continuing through flood, hurricane and fire. The Phoenix Shed itself rose out of the 1918 conflagration. By 2018, that brave 100-year-old structure was considered too frail to continue and was scheduled for demolition. However, a different view existed and the shed and the yard live on to shelter and maintain heritage vessels into the future. In April 2019, the yard was acquired by Eric Reynolds, chairman of Save Britain's Heritage and trustee of the
National Maritime Museum, the Cutty Sark and the SS Robin Trust. Since then, many have commented on the buzz of activity and the new structures around the yard. Eric will talk to the Society on Wednesday 6th October with the title 'There's Life in the Old Yard Yet' and he has a fascinating tale to tell of conservation, regeneration and development. The talk will be at 7:30pm in the hall of Woodbridge Preparatory School. Access is via the school's car park in Cumberland Street. Visitors will be very welcome and we ask for a contribution to the Society of £5. The second talk in the Autumn series will be on Wednesday 3rd November at 7:30pm and will be given by Rebecca Crerar, manager of the Suffolk Refugee Association. Her title will be 'Asylum in Suffolk'.
On Saturday 28th August, the Woodbridge branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) celebrated the 100th centenary of the formation of the RBL with music and stalls in Elmhurst Park. From buskers to the big band of Leiston, RBL music filled the air. The public wandered round and browsed the stalls, sat, relaxed, and enjoyed a picnic in the park. At 4pm, a parade of standards filled the arena with the Mayor of Woodbridge, Sue Bales saying a few words followed by the deputy Lord Lieutenant Jamie LowtherPinkerton who then presented awards to poppy appeal volunteers for their support, awards were
given to those who volunteered ten years to twenty-five years of their time to collect money for the poppy appeal. Dates for the diary: • 30th Oct: Poppy appeal launch • 12th November: School children's remembrance service on Market Hill. • 12th November at 7pm: Festival of Remembrance Spa Pavilion Felixstowe A night of music and entertainment. (Prebook your ticket now) • 13th November: Grave side remembrance at the war graves in the cemetery. • 14th November: Remembrance Sunday
