Letter From The Publisher

Dear Readers,

As it was announced in the summer issue, after more than 20 years, County Living Magazine is embarking on a new journey under new ownership. We are excited about this official relaunch of a newly rebranded publication, and I couldn’t be prouder of where CLM is heading.

If anyone were to talk to my mother, she would state that I have had a career of floundering from one thing to the next. I prefer to think of it as reinventing myself many times over. Most recently a personal need to exit my career in the food industry was rooted in a deep desire for exploring what was next for me, but also in how I could reinvent myself in a meaningful way that utilized my skills as a creative. For over a decade I have applied my skills to support many of our local restaurant businesses. When the CLM opportunity landed in my lap, it was a perfect match. It was the very channel that would allow me to take those skills and expand what I could do in service to our local businesses and community at a larger scale.

A longing passion for community building and strengthening of our local economies inspired me to create a new brand around the theme of Localism, which you can read more on page 40. Each issue promises to discover and explore our local Makers & Doers, the people in our community that are the risk takers, putting their hearts and souls into providing the many services and products that make our lives better.

County Living Magazine represents the “Key to the County”, with the addition of the key insignia on the cover and throughout the book. It is our mission to open new doors, increase brand awareness and tell the stories behind the businesses, local leaders, forward thinking influencers, the artisans and the people who inspire us.

I hope you will join us in celebrating the hard-working souls of our community, patronizing the establishments as a way of ensuring their continued success, and helping our vibrant economy and neighborhoods to thrive.

A BIG thank you for my creative team! Drew and Jill Mangels, whom I couldn’t have arrived at this rebrand without, you’re both amazing. Michael Kilfoy for your hard work, valuable knowledge and experience, and for whom this issue wouldn’t have come to pass without you. Finally, for Todd Abrams, who has remained committed to the success of CLM and has embraced all these changes with complete grace. I appreciate each one of you.

Cherished Items Guiding Design Inspiration

A home filled with carefully curated pieces that reflect your style and personality will always be more inviting than one that’s been designed like the “trending” section of a big box retailer. Why not design the spaces we live in without falling prey to décor capitalism, which only traps us into needing to change our homes every three to five years? Taking the time to curate our collections and design our spaces with mindful choices; ones that are truly rooted in our unique style, not only spares us the need

to keep up with design trends, but it allows us to create the luxury of a timeless and classic home.

While the design process can feel overwhelming to many homeowners, we are too often duplicating what we see on mainstream and social media. We might ask ourselves if the social media influencers who are being paid to convince us that we need the latest things from the big brands are the right people to guide us in our endeavors.

“At Three French Hens we love building a room around your special pieces, whether that be an elegant grand piano, a colorful oil painting, or a piece of antique furniture handed down from grandma.”

A home that is uniquely you will never go out of style. A simpler approach to updating a living space could start with choosing one thing you own that you love. If you don’t have anything that you love deep down to your core… start soul searching or start shopping! Hire a designer to help you invest in one statement piece that makes your heart flutter and develop your unique style around it. This could be a piece of art, an area rug, an upholstery design, or a piece of antique furniture.

Last year, Three French Hens had a client who was obsessed with the recently discontinued Braemore Pheasant fabric. Fortunately, there was a bolt left over from a previously completed project and we got to work! We designed chairs mixing the gorgeous fabric with rich green leather and antique brass nail heads on an exposed wood chair. After we settled on the chair, it was effortless sourcing a cocktail table, two leopard ottomans, and a reclining sofa to complement! These new pieces mixed seamlessly with the existing furniture and decor that she already treasured. It’s a beautiful thing when we make decisions that feel authentic. We avoided the recreation of what could have been a TV episode room, and it allowed her to update her space according to her true tastes.

Another experience to illustrate this approach was another client who

wanted to take his home from traditional to rustic and showcase a custom portrait painted of his beloved dog. We began the process with a wool, plaid fabric that was the perfect way to add interest to the small hearth room and continued from there. Mixing that fabric with leather and hide on the small sectional was a magical transformation. The leather chosen for the wingback had tones that tied in perfectly with the oil painting, and ta-da! The whole room was transformed in a distinctively styled way, yet it was as if it had been there forever. Mission accomplished!

Whether you choose to work on your own or hire a designer, truly take the time to understand your unique style to guarantee that your home will be timeless and inspirational for years to come. This is not just an investment, but money well spent.

Embracing Autumn: The Perfect Time for Planting Trees and Shrubs

Understanding the Shift in Seasons

As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, autumn signals a perfect time for planting trees and shrubs. The heat has passed, and the days are growing shorter, creating an ideal environment for gardening. As the days shorten, plants respond by slowing their growth, developing blooms, and finally going into seed production or producing their fall color. This fall color which we all have come to cherish and marvel at

“Items to be planted this fall to yield a beautiful bloom the following season ensures that one would be able to see their tree flower the following season.”

is coming into its peak, just before leaf and needle drop. The trees and shrubs slow down for the season and sit dormant or in a state of dormancy (evergreens) as their root systems swell over winter. After winter’s end the sap will start to rise and flow through the cambium layer which is just under the bark, delivering the nutrients for the trees buds to elongate and emerge as new growth with a hormone called Auxin. When planted in fall or dormant period these trees will have an uninterrupted growing season the following year, which is generally favorable. In most cases the only plants that we do not recommend planting in fall would be items that have very thin or hairlike roots such as azalea or ornamental grasses, and items that could pop out of the ground due to our Midwest freeze and thaw. Generally, items planted in a 2-gallon container or larger would be best.

The

Benefits of Fall Planting Autumn is full of color, elegance and grace. Our native woodline and forest tends to have mostly yellow hues from Redbud, Poplar, Birch and Hickory. Oranges will pop from Oaks, Elms, Sugar Maple and Hornbeam. Red tones can be seen peeking through from Dogwood, Persimmon, and Pear. While we enjoy those as a distant sightline, in our

foreground and our gardens we aim to bring more of that distant color into landscape areas by planting Ginkgo Biloba, Red Maple, Serviceberry, Dawn Redwood, Tupelo Blackgum, and Parrotia Persica. These even tempered and low maintenance options will deliver impact of color just as seasons (and our wardrobes) change color.

Planting trees and shrubs in fall is not always an instant gratification and is often a forethought into being patient and waiting through winter to see spring blossoms. Bulbs and plants to be put in the ground this fall ensure that beautiful blooms will be enjoyed the following season. As far as shrubs in the beds, some of the first to bloom in our area that will signal spring is here include Forsythia, and Witchazel, and a personal favorite Fothergilla. There are so many options, that almost anyone can find stand alone or groupings of plants that would strike a chord and deliver impact of beauty.

A Vision Realized The Story of a Hillside Water Feature Masterpiece

Larry and Patty Malashock had always dreamed of enhancing the view from their lakefront property with a stunning water feature. Larry’s vision of a cascading waterfall to complement the natural landscape led him to Nature’s Re-Creations, a local business specializing in custom water features. Inspired by the rocky hillside and tree-lined surroundings, Larry embarked on the journey of bringing his vision to life.

After the first two years of enjoying their lakeside home, Larry and Patty decided to add a water feature to their property, marking their first experience with such a project. Two years after purchasing the property, they collaborated with Nature’s Re-Creations to create a masterpiece that would transform their outdoor space.

The water feature boasts three distinct waterfalls, strategically

positioned on the hillside to be mostly viewed from the lake. The soothing sounds of moving water provide a constant source of tranquility, making it a favorite spot for relaxation. Patty savors her morning coffee from the deck overlooking the lake and water feature during the warm seasons, immersing themselves in the beauty of their creation.

From the initial search for a local business to the completion of the

project, Larry was impressed with Nature’s Re-Creations. Working closely with Chris and his team, Larry found the process to be seamless and fulfilling. Despite having a rough vision of what he wanted, the final result exceeded his expectations, creating a slice of paradise on his property.

When asked to rate his satisfaction with the water feature on a scale of 1-10, Larry enthusiastically replied with an 11. Not only does the water feature bring joy to his family, but it also resonates with residents and boaters on the lake, becoming a shared source of delight for all who encounter it.

Over the years, Larry has witnessed the enduring beauty of the water feature, with no need for additional enhancements. Thanks to the impeccable maintenance provided by Chris and his team, Larry and his family can simply sit back and bask in the glory of their enchanting creation.

As a testament to the quality of their work, Larry’s water feature has attracted the attention of visitors during the Pond-O-Rama tours, sparking interest in having similar features installed at their homes. Larry wholeheartedly recommends other homeowners to consider adding a water feature to their properties, emphasizing the joy and tranquility it brings.

Not only does the water feature bring joy to his family, but it also resonates with residents and boaters on the lake...

Larry commends Nature’s ReCreations for their reliability, honesty, and exceptional maintenance services. Their dedication to keeping the water feature in pristine condition, even during labor shortages, showcases their unwavering commitment to their clients. With Nature’s Re-Creations by their side, Larry and his family continue to cherish their water feature as a symbol of beauty, tranquility, and perfection.

Preserving the Freedom of Wild Horses

In a world where beauty and freedom collide, Timothy Spencer’s photography journey unfolds with a passion that knows no bounds. Inspired by a deep love for sharing his unique perspective, Timothy’s lens focuses on the breathtaking landscapes and captivating wildlife that surround us.

A couple of years ago, Timothy and his wife Denise embarked on a journey to the Badlands of South Dakota to photograph bison. A chance sighting of a wild mustang in the Badlands sparked a fire within Timothy, leading him on a quest to find these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. The allure of the wild horses in Theodore Roosevelt National Park beckoned, and with each encounter, Timothy saw not just wild animals but symbols of beauty and freedom, inspiring him to become a passionate advocate for their preservation.

Capturing the Essence: Patience and Respect

To capture the true spirit of wild horses, Timothy knows that patience is key. He waits, he watches, allowing the horses to be themselves in front of his lens. Through this silent connection, he captures moments of pure beauty and raw emotion, each image a testament to the grace and power of these magnificent creatures.

In the vast expanse of nature, challenges always exist. Finding the wild horses is no easy task, requiring patient observation and a bit of luck. Lighting plays a crucial role in creating stunning images, with the sun’s position dictating the mood and quality of each photograph. Yet, despite these obstacles, Timothy’s dedication and passion shine through, guiding him towards unforgettable encounters and breathtaking shots.

Through his photography, Timothy hopes to inspire others to take action. Each image tells a story of beauty and resilience, but also of a looming threat to the existence of wild horses. A Dose of Virtue Cultivating Independence

In this dedicated corner, we aim to foster goodness and unity within our community by drawing inspiration from cherished values and virtues.

Independence: A Core Virtue

Selected randomly from The Virtues Project card deck, the virtue of “Independence” takes center stage in our exploration. This quintessential American virtue resonates deeply in our current landscape, from the spirit of Wild Horses captured in Timothy Spencer’s photography, alongside insights from Rae Sutton on authenticity in design choices, to the intellectual agency demanded during election years. Independence, as defined by The Virtues Project, embodies confident self-reliance, the courage

to perceive reality through our own eyes, and the ability to be true to ourselves while making decisions free from external influence.

Shaping Lives and Communities

Independence extends beyond personal empowerment to influence our interactions and contributions to the world. Emotionally, it fosters

self-sufficiency and genuine connections, while financially, it promotes balance and creativity. Taking responsibility for our actions, thoughts, and beliefs, independence empowers us to discern truth from falsehood and cultivate authenticity in all aspects of life.

Supporting Growth and Empowerment

While independence is a noble pursuit, we do not want to abandon or judge, but rather support those struggling with dependency, guiding them towards autonomy. True support involves freeing individuals from reliance on others, encouraging personal growth and self-discovery. By fostering independence in ourselves and others, we promote moral integrity, strengthen character, and inspire a values-driven culture that celebrates authenticity and agency in every aspect of life.

Shifted concrete slabs look bad and are tripping hazards that can cause injuries.

If your concrete surfaces have a seam that has turned into a step, or repeated cracking, it’s probably caused by a weak soil base or erosion below. The good news is the concrete does not have to be torn out and poured again to fix the problem.

Woods Basement Systems offers the exclusive PolyLevel® process that injects a lightweight polyurethane mix, which expands to fill the void and lift concrete slabs to a level, even position. After two to three hours, you can park on your driveway the same day.

What’s in a Name? How Clayton Road Paved the Way

Beckoning, meandering, and never boring, a central corridor road that begins in St. Louis proper and heads west could arguably be a connectthe-dots postcard of our community history. A perfect date might mean drinks and conversation at the Fox & Hounds (on the overstuffed fireside chairs, if you’re lucky). Perhaps a film at the Hi-Pointe, or – back in the daya late-night excursion to satisfy onion ring cravings at the old Parkmoor. And today, if shopping is on your todo list, wander up the road to where Nordstrom anchors the Galleria; just a few more miles, and you’re at Saks 5th Avenue. Serious retail therapy with just a swing of your Prada bag.

Clayton Road traverses this and more, including the chance to peruse some seriously beautiful real estate. It’s about 20 miles until all of this eye candy comes to an end — just the right length for an early Saturday morning bike ride. Do the round trip, and refuel at Gooey Louie Bakery. (Come on! It’s St. Louis and you just cycled about 40 miles. What ELSE would you treat yourself to?)

This ribbon of St. Louis memories takes its name from the country estate of Ralph Clayton, who donated 100 acres to establish the St. Louis county seat that would be named for him as a

condition of the gift.

The aforementioned Hi-Pointe Theatre and Cheshire Inn are located steps from the spot where Clayton Road connects with McCausland Avenue. Besides being a landmark corner, those names intersected in romantic style in May, 1831, when Ralph Clayton married Rosanna McCausland, the Irish-born daughter of James McCausland, for whom the street is named. (Rosanna’s sister, Elizabeth McCausland, would later marry James Marshall and live in Fairfax House, a timber-framed Greek Revival building that still stands proudly in Rock Hill. If you’ve ever heard the half-joking speculation that everyone in St. Louis is related, perhaps it began with the property deeds.)

In search of a breathtaking architectural experience? The sublime

silhouette of the Ethical Society, designed by modernist architect Harris Armstrong, is a must-see, inside and out. The acoustics are superb and the stained glass is even better. (And who could behold that driveway without longing for a snowstorm and a Flexible Flyer?)

The further west you go, the more pastoral Clayton becomes. My realestate dad, who sold a home or two on Clayton, always insisted that it would never be widened to four lanes because property owners “had enough money” to make sure that never happened. I have no idea if that’s true, but I do remember his dismay when he listed a classic center-hall Colonial as a favor to a friend.

A stately house with a large circle drive in front and a swimming pool in the back, the home was doomed to be a white elephant, according to my dad. Never one to mince words, he rolled his eyes and said, “Why would any damn fool build right on Clayton Road? It will never sell.” It did, of course, and some 40 years later, homes along that stretch routinely have price tags with more than one comma.

I can only imagine his disdain at THAT turn of events.

The world’s largest Amoco sign stands at the intersection of Clayton and McCausland.

The Key to Growing Younger as You Age

Discoveries about aging show that it is possible to slow or even reverse what had been thought of as inevitable physical decline beginning in our 40s, 50s and 60s, to actually become functionally younger. We can make aging a slow, minimal and graceful process with three things: regular exercise, good nutrition and commitment.

The most important factor for good health and successful aging is getting regular, planned exercise – a whole-body program to improve strength, flexibility and balance, to make it easier to do everyday things and prevent injuries.

Nutrition comes down to a balanced approach to eating less of things that don’t give you needed nutrients, and more of things that do. What you eat and when you eat can make a big difference in how your diet fuels your exercise and helps you feel better.

Commitment means doing these two things for the rest of your life. But you don’t have to take on this challenge on your own. What makes long-term results possible is to get started with a trainer in an environment where you will feel comfortable enough to make that commitment to yourself. After a few weeks you will start to feel the difference that will motivate you to continue.

Gene and Dianne, in the photo below, have just celebrated their fifth anniversary with me as their

personal trainer. Gene had been heavy as a kid, but active in sports as an adult, which helped him manage his weight. When he retired, he was looking for an exercise program that would help him stay healthy and active, with mobility needed to avoid injuries and falls. Dianne has always stayed slim but was looking to improve strength and flexibility. They both wanted to be in shape for long hikes they enjoy, locally and in national parks.

Gene recalls that when they exercised on their own, they just did the same routines every time. He wasn’t sure they were doing them correctly to get the most benefit and avoid injury.

Gene and Dianne work out with me two days a week. One day we focus on upper body strength and the other on lower body strength. Both days we end with yoga to improve flexibility and balance. Seasonally we take outdoor power walks to improve hiking endurance. We change routines every few months to

provide well-rounded conditioning to achieve their goals. I am conscious to adjust their routines for any health issues that come up. When we began, I provided an eating plan, which helped Gene lose 20 pounds over the years we have worked together.

Gene says, “The best comments come from our two daughters, who are thankful and proud that we have stuck with our program over these years. It’s never too late to start. In fact, the older we get, the more important it is for this type of exercise. Bret is so knowledgeable and can work to improve anybody, no matter what level they start at.”

Localism: A Tide that Rises

When I was just four years old, I can recall visiting my grandfather’s downtown Honolulu warehouse near Mamala Bay. They were Belgian immigrants who thrived as small business owners and real estate investors in Hawaii during Oahu’s period of rapid expansion. My grandfather found opportunities in importing building materials and supplying steel strapping to military families. In 1961 when the state sought white cement for the USS Arizona Memorial, Lamers Enterprises, his business, came through. Today, both the memorial and his legacy remain standing strong over six decades later.

While Localism wasn’t a word I could have understood, the impact of local business on community was already leaving an impression on me growing up in the presence of my grandparents. When I returned to Honolulu in 2023, seeing the memorial and the warehouse with his name still proudly displayed, I truly grasped the profound influence my grandfather’s single local business had on their Hawaiian community. Today, Lamers Enterprises has evolved into a thriving commercial janitorial company, a strategic pivot as the building growth subsided. Their trucks now navigate the streets of downtown Honolulu, a testament not just to the enduring legacy of

hard work and courage required, but even more importantly to the faithful, loyal customers who are key to their success.

As County Living embarks on a new chapter, our mission is to help the communities we serve return to those simple exchanges of trust and patronage that allow local businesses to thrive. When our local businesses thrive, our local economy is stronger, creating greater independence from the nation’s economy.

Localism is a relatively new term, but not a new concept. It’s about community, but more importantly it’s about supporting people and businesses with our dollars, which often begins with doing our research. Localism is also a mindset because when we’re mindful of shopping local we make a positive economic impact on the community ecosystem since, according to Forbes, two-thirds of that money stays right in our community! And according to AMIBA, studies conducted by Civic

“Seeing

the USS Arizona memorial and the Lamers Enterprises’ trucks on the streets of

Honolulu are both testaments to the enduring legacy and power of a single local business.”

Economics show that locally spent dollars create a local multiplier effect, which means that your dollars recirculate 2-4 times more than when you spend them at a national store or retail chain. It also generates increased local wealth, helps to keep costs of goods and services down, stimulates job growth, and even fuels charitable contributions.

County Living is proud to be an independent, locally owned publication. We invite our readers to embrace the stories of the makers and doers we feature, who weave the tapestry of local innovation, economy and diversity. We encourage you to research and distinguish between locally owned, out of state ownership and corporate entities. If you’re in the market for an investment, consider buying a local business to contribute to your community’s wealth, or sell a business as a way of preserving a local legacy. Whatever you’re aspiring to do, do your part locally. As makers and doers ourselves, it starts with all of us, and our purchasing power.

County Living will strive to be your key to the counties and the communities we serve — a hub of information, a storyteller of inspirational people and businesses, and to help be a rising tide that elevates us all.
