Debbie and Becca’s work relationship soon developed into something more

ebbie met Becca at work in 2011. “Debbie was opening a brandnew restaurant and I interviewed to be a waitress,” says Becca. “We worked together for a couple of months before we began dating, with our relationship developing quite quickly as we were together all the time. Running a restaurant meant we didn’t have much free time in the beginning to go out, but the dates we did have were amazing – and we quickly fell in love.” After six years together Debbie and Becca got engaged – by accident! “By this time, we’d made a decision to close the restaurant side of the business and begin our journey as a wedding and events venue. During the week, we’d run networking occasions, where I met a lovely lady called Amanda. She worked with her husband, Michael, at their own bespoke jewellery store. Amanda and I had a long chat about rings, and I booked an appointment – without consulting Debs – just to look at some ideas. To cut a long story short, we came out of the appointment having commissioned two bespoke engagement rings! We kept it all a secret until the rings were ready to collect, and became officially engaged in October 2017.” Debbie and Becca’s wedding was booked for the 27th August 2021, with the couple choosing a ceremony at Colchester Town Hall and their reception at Peldon Community Hall. Here, Becca tells us more about their amazing day… 31

Colchester’s Town Hall is a beautiful space to marry in. We decided not to decorate the room, as we knew we’d only be in there for about half an hour.

I bought a non-traditional dress online, as I was only going to be wearing it for about six hours!

We asked Fabricate Décor to hang drapes and lights from the ceiling at Peldon Community Hall, and we also added some LOVE letters along with an LED dancefloor.

Debs doesn’t do dresses, so after much searching found some white trousers along with a flowy top and white see-through cover-up for the day.

I love all flowers, so asked our florist to select seasonal flowers of her choice for the day. It really paid off – the results were incredible.

The adult bridesmaids wore pastel pink dresses from Chi Chi London, with the younger girls wearing matching colour dresses with tuille skirts and satin bows. 32

REAL WEDDINGS The flavours of our wedding cake were me and Debs to a tee – chocolate with chocolate buttercream for Debs, and vanilla with white chocolate buttercream for me!

Our wedding was so soon after the lockdowns that our guests loved being out and catching up with each other. We were all so busy chatting that the day flew by!

We decided against a table plan as we wanted the reception to have a party vibe, with guests sitting wherever they felt comfortable.

We opted to feed everyone canapés and a hot and cold buffet. We had messages for days afterwards asking for our caterer’s details!

We knew straight away who we wanted as our photographer and were so pleased Clare was available. It was surreal wandering around Castle Park, having strangers congratulate us as we had our photos taken.

Make sure you eat before you get married! I skipped breakfast and lunch as I was too stressed to think about food, and it made me feel unwell after the ceremony. 33

idwife Natalie met Mark when she became his mentor during a placement at Basildon University Hospital’s maternity unit. “Mark was training to be a paramedic, and there was an instant attraction between us,” says Natalie. “We saw more and more of each other, and soon began to realise we were meant to spend the rest of our lives together.” Three years later, the couple were enjoying a family Christmas break at Center Parcs in Elveden Forest. “One night, we went to see the giant snow globes that you could get in to have your photo taken,” continues Natalie. “Once inside, Mark got down on one knee and asked to marry me! Shocked, but over the moon, I said ‘yes’, then we all went out and celebrated with lots of Champagne.” Natalie and Mark started planning their wedding straight away, putting deposits on a venue, photographer and string quartet. Then Natalie spotted a competition on Instagram where NHS workers could win a wedding worth £26,000, and thought it couldn’t hurt to just fill out the form…

OVER THE RAINBOW The competition, organised by florist and venue stylist Rosie Obeney of Rose Decor Styling, offered one lucky couple a free wedding at Tuffon Hall, including photography, videography, dresses, suits, cake, catering, flowers, stationery, entertainment, hair, make-up, decorations and more. With 24 Essex suppliers involved, Natalie decided to enter. “We felt the way we met and working for the NHS was a story in itself, but wanted to show we were also not immune to our own suffering. Unfortunately, in 2017, during a perfect pregnancy, our son, Ronnie, was born at 23 weeks. Sadly, after three weeks of spending every minute with him, he passed away. We returned to our roles within the NHS, which took immense resilience with me working on the delivery suite and Mark as a paramedic. Being thrust back into a life where you’re faced with living your own nightmare through others, as well as having first-hand experience understanding people’s darkest times, is hard, to say the least. We were then overjoyed to welcome our beautiful rainbow baby, Teddy, in late 2018, which showed that we can survive anything together.”

IN IT TO WIN IT The couple were out shopping when they received a call saying they’d been shortlisted for the prize. “It was so noisy in the shop I thought at first we were only in the running for winning some wedding flowers!” says Natalie. “We were asked to attend Basildon University Hospital in uniform, to meet some suppliers as we’d made the final three. Upon arrival, we were handed cards to read in order, and were told some of the businesses would be waiting to meet us by the maternity entrance as part of being shortlisted. When we got to the last card, and read that we’d actually won, we were in total disbelief! Arriving at the maternity entrance, we were then surprised by the suppliers and lots of our friends and family! We were still in shock for days afterwards!”

Natalie and Mark’s wedding was booked – after COVID halted the competition’s original 2021 date – for 3rd March 2022, with Tuffon Hall offering their space as part of the prize. “We visited the venue as soon as we could after being told we’d won,” continues Natalie. “It was incredible, from its open plan space, tons of natural light, and high vaulted open woodwork ceiling. It even had underfloor heating so would be the perfect temperature for our spring wedding! We were shown around the large patio area, complete with beautiful flower beds, before being taken to the venue’s vineyard, which is the third place where our ceremony could be held. By the end of the tour we were so excited, and couldn’t wait to see how our big day would come together.”

JUST GIVING The couple opted for a grey and white theme for their big day, meeting up at first with their wedding planner from One Oake, Aimée. “Aimée was amazing throughout, supplying us with a helpful plan and timeline for contacting our suppliers, as well as any information they required,” continues Natalie. “We were delighted to see we’d receive chocolate heart favours from Nirvana Chocolat; wedding stationery, name cards and a welcome sign from Leigh Calligraphy; incredible bouquets and floral displays from Rose Decor Styling; a three-tier, semi-naked cake from The Honey Bee Wedding Cake Company; balloons from As You Wish Balloons; canapés and a three-course wedding breakfast from The Great Catering Company; £1,000 of props to hire from Anthology Vintage Hire; a seven-seater Mercedes with driver from MTB Luxury Travel; wedding rings from Coo Hatton Garden; and even three rooms for the night of the wedding at Marks Tey Hotel. And that was only just the beginning!”

DRESS TO IMPRESS When it came to choosing a dress, Natalie was gifted an incredible £1,000 towards her style of choice from Leigh on Sea’s Blush boutique. “I spent a further £1,000 on the most gorgeous gown, Watters Bridal Montgomery in Moscato,” says the bride. “After trying so many styles, this one made me feel like a Princess, so I knew it was the one.” Natalie was also lucky enough to receive a custom-made veil from Rebecca Anne Designs, and a bespoke hair vine and rose gold

earrings from PS With Love. “Even my wedding hair and makeup was taken care of,” continues the bride. “Jennie from Bridal Hair by Jennie transformed my locks into a cascade of curls, while Elaine from Elaine Marie Professional Makeup worked her magic on myself, my bridesmaids, my mum and Mark’s mum – and we were all so happy with how we looked.” The rest of the bridal party were also well-catered for, with the bridesmaids gifted their gorgeous multiway dresses from Lá Closet Dé Chánel. “I went with silver grey and paid extra for tulle overlay as I really loved the look,” says Natalie. “Next, there was Mark and his groomsmen to take care of – but I needn’t have worried. Mark was gifted a navy blue lounge suit with grey tweed waistcoat from Dapper Chaps. They also supplied three more suits for the groomsmen, but with grey ties to complement the bridesmaids’ dresses. Even our son Teddy wore a suit – and he couldn’t have looked more gorgeous!”

REAL WEDDINGS

LET’S PARTY! After the wedding breakfast it was time for Natalie, Mark and their guests to enjoy a party to remember. “The night was packed with even more suppliers who offered their services as part of our prize,” says the bride. “The DJ from Dreamwave Group listened to our suggestions so knew exactly what music we wanted to hear, and we were also lucky enough to have a pianist, Zoe Alexandria. She has a musical talent that’s second to none, and I’d recommend her to anyone! We also had a wonderful singer, Idreiss, who sang a great mix of songs. All of our guests commented on how great he was, and he even paired with pianist Zoe during the wedding breakfast.” It goes without saying that the whole day was perfectly captured by both the photographer and videographer. “Dan from D&A Photography was fantastic,” continues Natalie. “Mark and myself are both easy going, so let Dan guide us with his recommendations – and we couldn’t be happier with how the photos turned out! Our talented videographer, Carl from Six Eight Video, was great, too. After chatting to him on Zoom he gave us some ideas of what we could incorporate into our video. When we met him on the day it was like we’d known him for a long time – he made us feel extremely comfortable, which resulted in some really natural footage of the day.”

Cruise ship singers Cameron and Craig enjoyed an amazing day at Brentwood’s Friern Manor Images courtesy of Boutique Weddings

ameron and Craig met while performing as cruise ship singers. “We’re total opposites, but this is why we love each other so much!” says Cameron. “I’m very particular and know exactly what I want, whereas Craig loves performing and enjoying life. After seeing each other pretty much 24/7 for almost a year, we knew that if we could survive cruise ships without killing each other then we could definitely make it on dry land!” When it came to popping the question, Cameron secretly asked Craig’s dad for permission while on a family cruise. “It was a huge surprise, as it was the first time we’d met!” continues Cameron. “After our ship contracts ended, we drove from New Orleans, where the liner docked, to Ohio, where I’m from, so Craig could meet my own friends and family. With the Tiffany engagement ring burning a hole in my pocket for the 12-hour drive, I took Craig to Cincinnati’s Skystar Observation Ferris Wheel so he could get a good view of the city. Knowing it only went around three times before ending, it gave me one rotation to build up the courage, one rotation to pop the question – and one rotation to celebrate if Craig gave me the right answer!” Proposing to Craig with Savage Garden’s Truly Madly Deeply on his phone speaker – “we said if we ever got married it would be our first dance,” remembers Cameron – Craig said, “Yes!”, before they headed to a restaurant for a celebratory drink. The couple chose the 21st July, 2021 for their wedding, saying ‘I do’ at Brentwood’s Friern Manor. Here, Cameron tells us all about their big day… 43

I was only in the UK for a short time before I had to go back on the ships, so we didn’t have long to choose a venue. However, when we visited Friern Manor we knew immediately it was where we’d get married.

The venue had recently renovated its stable house and garden and looked incredible. We didn’t have a massive budget, but loved how our coordinator said it would still feel as if we’d spent £100,000!

Our florist did a brilliant job with the flowe rs, and we loved the bouquets, LED flower wall, table runner and centrepieces. We also displayed the bouquets in glass bowls after the ceremony.

I wore a slim-fit sky blue three-piece suit, accented with zebra lining. Craig, meanwhile, chose a navy blue three-piece suit with bowtie. Both were accessorised with double blue and white flower buttonholes to match the best man’s one flower buttonhole.

I also designed the place names myself, hand painting them in gold leaf. They looked stunning against the white and blue colour scheme.

I really enjoyed creating our tableplan, handwriting our guests’ names on an antique mirror and accentuating it with white and blue flowers.

It was very hot that day, so a lot of the recep tion took place outside enjoying the weather. It was almost too hot – but then again it was far better than a day of rain!

My brother-in-law lost one of the rings in the grass minutes before the ceremony, which meant everyone had to get down on their hands and knees to look for it! Luckily it was found just in time!

We made confetti packets with dried blue flowers and blue confetti to make our suits ‘pop’. The results speak for themselves.

We had an amazing reception at Frier n Man or. We have many performing friends, so the dancefloor was filled with salsa , dips, spins and lifts!

hen you think of sustainability, decadence and luxury aren’t usually the first words that spring to mind. However, our shoot at North Essex venue, Houchins, proves that sustainability doesn’t have to mean scrimping on style. “As we become more aware of the actions we have on the environment, it makes sense that industries are starting to look at what they can do to minimise that impact. The wedding world is not known for being environmentally friendly, and floristry has come under fire for the pesticides used to preserve the cut flowers, not to mention the use of materials such as floral foam, which isn’t biodegradable and can release microplastics into the environment. With this in mind Houchins and myself have been looking at what we can do to help.”

THE VENUE “Houchins prides itself on being an eco-friendly venue and boasts beautiful gardens which will soon have the addition of a wildflower meadow. They also have an active programme to plant native trees and hedgerows to increase biodiversity, creating habitats for a wide range of wildlife. As well as recycling, using LED lights, and installing waterless urinals, the venue uses a water source heat pump for heating resulting in an almost carbon-neutral solution.”

THE FLOWERS “I’ve become increasingly aware of the need to reduce the carbon footprint of my own business and have put policies in place to address this. When possible, I only work with seasonal flowers. This means there is no need to import any blooms, and they can be sourced locally. I also grow a lot of foliage, both at my home and at my studio, allowing me to ‘forage’ legally from my own supplies! I order carefully to avoid any waste being leftover, plus I recycle or reuse packing or decorations wherever possible. For example, for this shoot all materials were composted or recycled. Everything else, like pins and ribbons, were cleaned to be reused. There was no floral foam to be found, opting instead for more eco-friendly options like chicken wire, floral fibre and reusable containers to create the striking floral designs.”

“As with most florists, I absolutely love spring and the flowers that come with it!” says Charmaine Taylor from Basildon’s C Taylor’s Floristry. “There are so many gorgeous blooms for this season, including tulips, ranunculus, anemones, and everyone’s late spring favourites, peonies. I always find that a lot of the main seasonal spring flowers are so beautiful and interesting, as they are available in so many colours and varieties. When it comes to venue decoration in springtime, it’s always nice for your guests to be able to appreciate the beauty of these flowers after winter, so having low centrepieces is a really good way to do this – a pretty collection of delicate glass bud vases really shows off the flowers individually. I would then suggest having one big, main statement piece in the venue, combining all of the beautiful blooms of the season. This could be an archway, staircase, fireplace display or even a suspended ceiling installation. When it comes to your bridal flowers, springtime is ideal for that natural, romantic, gathered look, and can give so much movement and texture to your bouquet. “When it comes to your summer wedding, there will be flowers that are in season, as well as the annual staples all year round,” explains Sophie Ramsey from South Woodham Ferrers’ Poppydots Florists. “Roses, freesia and Eustoma are available at any time of year, while delphinium, sunflowers and the early flush of dahlias and cosmos are coming into season, adding interest to floral designs. “Whatever you think you want, it’s always good to be open-minded and not have your heart set on specific flowers to avoid disappointment. Your florist will appreciate the creative license – they are an expert designer, after all. Be mindful of the heat, as flowers do not like to be out of water for very long when it’s warm. Buttonholes should also be kept as cool as possible, choosing smaller materials that are less likely to wilt – spray roses and Eustoma are good options. Consider the environment when choosing your table décor, too – marquees are often warmer and more humid than a barn or stately mansion. Jam jars, fishbowls, tall stands and vases are all fantastic opportunities to display beautiful arrangements, while keeping the flowers in a direct water source. If you are marrying under a pagoda or gazebo, think about an installation on the structure, as this will be sheltered and the flowers will have a direct water source, rather than spending money on fresh flower chair ends that are out of water. “Autumn is such a wonderful time of the year for floral designers,” says Shoeburyness-based Charlotte Lewis from Laceys Event Services. “It’s here we see the real vibrant colours start to come through in both flowers and foliage. When planning your floral storyboard, think along the lines of intimate nights around a fire; romantic sunsets; warm berry drinks and the aroma of spiced pumpkin. Now, put these together with how you visualise your wedding flowers! Rather than using peonies, try delights such as dahlias and ranunculus, plus trailing flowers such as Amaranthus. They all come in a wide colour palette, from soft creams to vibrant oranges and dark reds. Anemones are another favourite of mine; their delicate leaves with contrasting centres really pop against other florals. Ensuring you incorporate a theme is also key in event design. Make sure you don’t choose beautiful autumnal bridal bouquets and then decorate the rest of the ceremony with spring or summer colours. Work with the changing of the season and remember that wedding archways needn’t be full of lush foliage and plump peonies; instead team prodigious ferns with burnt orange maples, fluffy pampas grass, soft hydrangea, roses and dahlia. Extend these same flowers through to aisle decorations and then onto your wedding tables in centrepieces. What’s not to love? “When choosing your wedding flowers, it’s always best to select those that are available in season. Eucalyptus is at its best in winter, along with skimmia, mimosa, witch hazel, pussy willow and asparagus ferns, along with some fabulous berries such as hypericum and ivy. Rose hips are aplenty and of course there are some lovely pine foliage and grasses available. Remember: many flowers are grown commercially and are available ‘year round’, but anemones, fritillaria, hellebores (Christmas Rose), hyacinths, muscari, ranunculus, snowdrops and lilac are all seasonal. “When consulting with your florist, share with them as much information about your vision for your day, where you will marry and hold your wedding breakfast. LAUREN’S HAIR “To get this look I started by sectioning the hair below the crown to the back of Lauren’s ears, backcombing a ponytail just above the nape of the neck before smoothing it over. I then began to curl the front sections with straightening irons, rolling them up and leaving them to set, before tonging the ponytail section in one to create a smooth roll curl. After an indepth consultation at her trial, we decided on a natural, dewy and radiant glow and for her to feel like the best version of herself. The base was achieved using a longwearing but light coverage natural foundation; a brightening concealer to lift the eyes; and a mixture of cream and powder products for bronzer, blush and highlight, all of which were set with a radiant setting powder. Beach chic was very much the order of the day for this exclusive bridal shoot, photographed on the sands of Walton-on-the-Naze

“

oft, pastel blues, golds and sweeping sand was the theme of this shoot,” explains Bridal Hair by Marina’s Marina Moore. “Pulling together a talented group of suppliers, we made the most of the beautiful stretches of sand at Walton-on-the-Naze when the weather took a spectacular sunny turn. Opting for a simple, fresh take on a wedding picnic on the sand, Stephanie of Hire My Decor was on hand to craft some beautiful wedding stationery, as well as providing the table and props used for the set up. With flowing pastel blue tulle as a centerpiece, it really did look like a dreamy beach wedding! Charmaine from C Taylor’s Floristry created a gorgeous sweeping bouquet and centrepiece for the table using a mix of Mondial Roses, Spray Roses, Ranunculus, Agapanthus, and dried Scabious Seed heads and grasses. The blue, floaty foliage was Asparagus Fern, and there were lots of different types of Eucalyptus, too.

“When it came to the bridal hair, I styled model Emily’s dark, glossy locks in a chic, long ponytail with a difference, while make-up artist Victoria kept her look reflective and golden, which made it shimmer in the sunlight. “Susan of Cottage Cakes created a gorgeous one-tier blue and creamy gold ombre cake, decorated with shells, biscuit sand and starfish. She also made some beautiful cupcakes to go with it, decorated with white chocolate shells. This was all captured by Laura Jane Photography, who has a talent for light, airy outdoor photography. Laura really wanted to make the most of the show-stopping dress provided by Millia London – a bright pastel blue, with ruffles and folds that worked like a dream on the beach. The gown is an incredible alternative for a bride that’s looking for something completely different – and for something that guests will be talking about for years.”

Our first wedding date got cancelled due to COVID-19, and we’re now apprehensive about booking another venue. What do you suggest we ask in case of future complications? The industry was hugely affected by the pandemic and venues had to reschedule many celebrations, so it’s no surprise that most wedding venues will now have a policy in place should anything like this ever happen again. When looking for your dream venue,

one of the questions I would recommend asking is what the venue’s COVID policy is – for example, will you be able to move your date, should it be affected by government restrictions? Will there be any charges to move the date? Will you be offered a selection of new dates – or will the venue decide on a new date for you? CASE CLOSED I don’t want to take a case crammed with clothes I won’t end up wearing on my honeymoon. We’re staying in the Caribbean during its hot and dry season – are there any dos and don’ts I should consider? As the weather is going to be hot and dry try to focus on breathable, cool, cotton or linen clothing. Maxi dresses are a great choice for day or night as it’s a ‘one stop shop’ outfit without having to worry about matching separate items. Try to stay away from dark colours or articles of clothing that are too fitted or tight – comfort is key, plus if you feel good you’ll look good! Various camisoles in a neutral palette will be your wardrobe hero, which you can mix and match by dressing up with brightly coloured maxi skirts or dressing down with shorts. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! We’re thinking of booking a videographer, but we’re not sure what to look for. Do you have any tips? Whatever you do, don’t book a videographer as an after-thought! The most common regret I hear from married couples is that they didn’t have a wedding film. Instead, start by following social media pages, research websites, and identify the styles you enjoy watching. Look for consistency, emotion, and personality you like before reaching out, researching packages and costs before setting your budget. Most videographers cater for different budgets, and I often discuss bespoke packages to get the film couples want. You should also say what you want and be clear. If I know what you want and expect, I can tailor films accordingly – it’s your film and should reflect who you are after all! Finally, be sure to organise a videographer early – we’re in demand and get booked up quickly! During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!

An island country nestled in South Asia, Sri Lanka has always been a bucket-list destination for Louise Prance, with her recent trip living up to her expectations and then some…

here were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family. While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean 96

along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.

A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay. If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury. Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!

HONEYMOONS

ART AND CULTURE Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.

OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter from predators. With little stops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest – and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.

TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…

A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.

ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!
