oes anyone else feel like they’ve been on a rollercoaster ride over the past year? From lockdowns and restrictions to WFH and Zoom calls – these are all things we have learned to adapt to. Throw wedding planning into the mix, and it’s incredible that we’ve made it through! What has been a silver lining for me in these utterly bonkers times is seeing how the Essex wedding industry has taken everything the pandemic has thrown at it in its stride. Tales of companies diversifying, volunteering and sending homemade presents to their couples have put such a smile on my face and make me proud to support our wedding superstars. You may have even heard me interviewed on BBC Essex recently, chatting about how creative our local wedding industry is! If you want to sing from the rooftops about how wonderful your big-day suppliers have been throughout date changes, postponements and last-minute micro-weddings, then we’d love to hear from you. In this issue, we aim to help you get that to-do list ticked off, with top tips from local experts in our Planning SOS feature (page 58), our round-up of the best wedding venues with outdoor spaces (page 19) and some serious gown inspiration (page 56) courtesy of our fashion editor, Claire Ridley.

BRINGING THE OUTDOORS IN

The recently renovated Orangery at Baddow Park House wedding venue in Chelmsford is a truly showstopping and versatile space, which is flooded with natural light. Seating up to 150 guests banquet-style, the space can be enhanced by opening up the wall of bi-folding doors to reveal idyllic views across the terrace to the vineyards beyond. “The seamless balance between indoors and outdoors makes the Orangery the perfect room for any season,” says group operations manager Kelly Sinnott. “Gorgeous summer wedding days and crisp autumnal evenings are equally suited here.” The space also benefits from a fully stocked bar, which mixes Art Deco styling with modern technology, adding a real focal point to nuptials. The Orangery can be turned around from day to evening with minimal fuss, meaning you and your guests can continue festivities all night without the need to relocate. We’re loving Couturiosity’s new bridalwear collection, which is launching in March. The bespoke eveningwear brand launched in 2019, but with the eveningwear market not in full swing during the pandemic, owner Billy Harrison pivoted his business to create a beautiful bridal range. The collection will be bespoke, and Billy will work one-to-one with brides to create coutureinspired one-off gowns. “I love the idea of involving clients in the whole experience,” Billy says. “Their dream dress will be made to their exact wishes, requirements and specifications.” Couturiosity’s signature style is traditional with a contemporary twist. “We wanted to cater to all brides,” Billy explains. “As it’s bespoke, we can design any style to suit. I’d advise at least three months lead time so we can carry out fittings and ensure the dress is perfect.” Check out https://couturiosity.co.uk

The great outdoors

Sparrows Campsite, a glamping site and outdoor wedding venue in the Essex countryside, will be offering micro-weddings and glamping packages for summer 2021. As an open-air venue with plenty of accommodation to keep households appropriately separate, it offers a safe environment to enjoy quality time together to mark special occasions. Couples will have exclusive-use of the whole campsite and its facilities for two nights from just £3,000. Tie the knot in the woodland ceremony area, before moving to the marquee and enjoying delicious food on the open-fire cooking equipment – or bring in your own caterers. Accommodation is provided in fully furnished bell tents for the couple and their party of up to 30 guests. Rest assured, there is a full COVID refund policy if the booking is affected by changes in government restrictions. Find out more at www.sparrowscampsite.co.uk www.photographybyannamarie.com

A GOOD CAUSE

Perfectly planned

Meet Bryony Chinnery of new Essex-based events company Hullabaloo Events (www.hullabalooevents.co.uk)… Tell us a bit about your company… Hullabaloo Events was founded when we were planning our own wedding. We didn’t want a traditional venue, instead, we were looking for something that reflected us as a couple. Then, we stumbled across beautiful giant tipis – but even that had its complications. It was hard to find quotes for tipis that included all the extras that make it a spectacular setting. We knew we couldn’t be alone, so the desire was ignited to help others solve the same problem: how to create their dream day with clear and simple combinations based around amazing tipi structures. We can help as much or as little as you want, from just hiring our beautiful giant tipis to mobile bars and full wedding coordination. What’s your background? I come from a PR and marketing background and have been involved in events for years, from celebrity launch parties to exhibitions. My jobs have always involved careful planning and delivering the best possible experiences for my clients, and this still rings true. I’m very creative and run a secondary business in personalised gifts and crafts, which means we can provide amazing personal touches for our couples. We also have an incredible logistics team as well as florists, stylists and even my nephew, George, who helps on site at the weekends!

Looking to make a sustainable choice with your wedding dress while also supporting a fantastic cause? Lady McAdden Breast Screening Trust has had to take the sad decision not to renew its lease for its Leigh-on-Sea premises, because of the effects of the pandemic. However, the trust has a temporary residence in Elmsleigh Drive, which houses hundreds of dresses and suits. The space will serve as a drop-off and collection point for internet sales. For more information, head to www.ladymcaddenbreastunit.co.uk/leigh-shop

What can couples expect when working with you? We are people who truly care. While we want to work with lots of wonderful couples, we will never take on too many clients as we want to provide the best customer service possible. Whether you just want us to turn up on the day, or you need help finding suppliers and sourcing props, we’re here to help our couples have a wedding that’s truly their own.

We love this gorgeous shot by Jayes Photography. Every guest at this wedding is shown in the frame, after the pandemic meant their wedding of 120 guests was cut down to just eight. “I’m so glad they still got married and showed their love to the world,” photographer Lewis Jayes says. “Their determination is something I wanted to capture for my portfolio! The couple have been together ten years and are so full of love and energy; you can see on their faces how happy they are to finally be married.” Visit www.jayesphotography.co.uk

IN TO THE BLUE The latest fragrances from iconic brand Tiffany & Co., Tiffany & Love Eau de Toilette for Him and Tiffany & Love Eau de Parfum for Her, were created as a tribute to modern love and the pairing is perfect for nearlyweds tying the knot. The male scent is a citrusy, aromatic fragrance with a wood-infused base. It begins with oils of ginger, mandarin and cardamon, at the heart is a juniper-cypress blend and it boasts base notes of sandalwood, vetiver and the common ingredient of the duo blue sequoia – uniting these two fragrances together! The female fragrance is modern with a feminine, floral, woody scent. It opens with top notes of blue basil – a botanical ingredient developed exclusively for Tiffany – then follows with a hearty sweet floral bouquet of neroli, underlined with a woody blend of blue sequoia, vetiver and cedarwood at the base. Priced at £54(50ml) or £75(90ml) for Him, and £75(50ml) or £110(90ml) for Her. HEDINGHAM CASTLE 01787 460 261 | www.hedinghamcastle.co.uk WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? The impressive drive through a leafy avenue takes guests through a classical sweeping landscape past mature trees, clipped hedges and the lake, which allows reflections across the water to the castle and house. Hedingham has the best of both worlds, from the imposing Norman keep on top of the hill with its romantic Tudor bridge, to the grand Georgian house surrounded by formal gardens.

WE LOVE… The venue offers whole-weekend weddings so couples can extend the celebrations with family and friends.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? Couples tying the knot here have a vast expanse of gardens, terraces and parkland at their disposal, which has been designed to flow from the venue and maximise any al fresco elements to the day. The exclusive-use Baddow Park House is a stylish sanctuary allowing parties to explore their surroundings undisturbed. The quintessentially English country house retains its original charm while offering incredibly high levels of comfort, style and attention to detail. Following an extensive refurbishment, it has relaunched as a private country venue with a sumptuous bridal suite and nine elegantly furnished guest bedrooms.

LET’S CELEBRATE! For smaller weddings, couples should consider the oak-panelled Oak Room (40 guests) or the beautifully light Drawing Room (80 guests), which offers stunning views across the parkland. The breathtaking Orangery holds up to 150 loved ones, while to-beweds can also make the most of the perfectly crafted pavilion to say their vows outside. Couples will love the sunset views over the vineyard at the rear of the house, while enjoying a delicious barbecue or pizza from The Log Shed Bar. As the sun sets, step into the whimsical woodland to enjoy toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate around the fire pit.

More intimate ceremonies are held in The Ashurst Room (40 guests) in the house. Couples can then choose to dine and dance in the elegant halls of the Georgian house and the stunning tulip marquee (up to 200 guests), or within the majestic walls of the castle (70 guest). Step inside to find meticulously restored period rooms from both the Georgian and Victorian eras.

and hand-painted wall motifs. The Banqueting Room (100 guests) has real wow factor with its 24-carat gold leaf swag and scroll decorations, silk-lined walls, hand-painted motifs and luxurious French marble fireplace. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the room in light and offer vistas across the grounds. The space was even chosen as a location for the stylish BBC programme Killing Eve. REAL WEDDINGS

asha and Vaughan met while on the same course at Brighton University, but once they left they lost contact. It was when they were both working in London that they bumped into each other again. “A few times on the way to work the tube doors opened and Sasha was on the other side,” Vaughan says. “One day, I was at the London Transport Museum with a friend when I saw Sasha acting in a video about buses. My friend encouraged me to get in contact, exclaiming how beautiful she was – and how single I was!” Thank goodness he did, as it wasn’t long before Vaughan was planning how to pop the question. “He proposed to me the day before New Year’s Eve,” Sasha remembers. “We had just returned to London after spending Christmas with family, and Vaughan suggested we visit Kenwood House in Hampstead. After touring the inside of the house and exploring the grounds and lake, Vaughan produced a box and said he’d got me an extra present. I was a little confused until he asked me to marry him.” Sasha answered with a resounding yes, and they celebrated with prosecco from the local Londis! The date was set for 20th July, 2019, at the stunning Hutton Hall. We caught up with Sasha to find out how they planned their dream day…

SETTING THE SCENE The couple visited 13 venues in total, on a mission to find a setting that was accessible for family and friends, while giving them the chance to have a bespoke day. “We shortlisted two very different venues,” Sasha explains. “We then revisited them with our parents for the final decision. Hutton Hall won us over. We loved the bright and modern interiors of this Georgian country house.” A timeless palette of navy and silver was chosen, and the couple knew that flowers would be a big part of their day. “We wanted our wedding to feel natural and rich,” Sasha explains. “We focused on lots of foliage with pops of colour coming from in-season wildflowers in blue, purple and orange to complement our colour scheme. Our favourite feature from our florist, Urban Flowers, was the moongate – it made a gorgeous backdrop for our vows.” Sasha and Vaughan’s illustrator friend Helen Perez Garcia created their invites. “This kind of personal connection is what made our day so special,” Sasha says. “We love her work and she understands us. As a gift, Helena gave us the two original artworks for the stationery, which take pride of place in our home.” As Vaughan and some of their guests have dietary issues, they were keen to find a cake that everyone could enjoy. “We found Bee’s Bakery, which makes delicious vegan and gluten-free cakes – and you’d never know!” Sasha says. “Our cake was adorned with wildflowers and it tasted great.” In the evening, they arranged a pizza van from Abigail’s; it went down a storm with guests but the newlyweds managed to miss it!

AISLE STYLE Sasha wore an exquisite gown from the Snow collection by Annasul Y. “I accessorised my chantilly lace dress with a gold and crystal belt,” Sasha tells us. “I fell in love with my gold Kate Spade shoes, they were beautiful and comfortable, but the glitter texture did catch on my dress!” 37 

The groom looked dashing in a grey check suit, and the buttonholes featured a thistle to celebrate the family’s Scottish roots. “We wanted the groomsmen to feel smart but a little raw around the edges, which complemented the down-toearth feeling of the wildflowers,” Sasha explains. The bridesmaids rocked beautiful 30s-style embellished dresses from Monsoon.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Sasha is a member of a choir called Songbirds, and they performed after the ceremony. “Near Vaughan’s parents’ house is a distillery, Burleigh’s Gin, where we were able to design our own gin,” Sasha says. “We ordered a big batch so during the choir’s beautiful performance we were sipping our very own tipple.” The newlyweds were keen to reflect themselves and the things they love in the day. “We painted a face-in-hole board in homage to Brighton, where we met,” Sasha says. “We also love lawn games, so we got some for our guests to play during the drinks reception.” The pair knew they wanted a live band, and after hours of searching came across Ruby and The Rhythms. “The band were an amazing choice,” Sasha says. “They even performed I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers for my mum, who was going through chemotherapy and recovering from surgery at the time. The song brought so much joy, and dancing to it with my mum is one of my fondest memories.” To capture the antics of the evening’s festivities, Sasha and Vaughan set up a DIY photo booth, with plenty of playful props. “We have an extra 800 photos that really capture the fun, joy and coming together of our loved ones,” Sasha smiles.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The pair both had stressful mornings, with Vaughan having to rush into town after finding his shirt had a stain on it, and Sasha waking up to find there was no hot water. “The moment we saw each other, all the nerves dissipated. We were incredibly happy and it all just felt so right,” Sasha tells us. The pair booked dance lessons before the big day. “We didn’t want anything over the top,” Sasha says. “We just wanted to feel more confident on the dancefloor. We had a simple routine to Nina Simone’s Feeling Good, and even though it may not have looked that exciting, it made us feel the part and have some real fun.” The dynamic trio of photographers Matt Wing and Greg Coltman alongside videographer Phil Smith not only captured Sasha and Vaughan’s day beautifully, but they also helped them to feel relaxed and allowed them to enjoy special moments together.

SASHA’S TOP TIP: “You can’t make everyone happy, so just remember that it’s your day.” 38

REAL WEDDINGS

B E S I D E THE Lauren and Chris’ micro-wedding was a real family affair Images courtesy of Pauls Studio

S

o many great marriages start with friendship, just like Lauren and Chris. “We can’t pinpoint the exact day we met,” Lauren laughs. “But our friendship blossomed over the course of a year, and it was on a group friends’ holiday in Portugal when we took the plunge and started our lives as a couple.” It seemed only right that Chris would take Lauren back to Portugal to pop the question. “We both love Eurovision, and we managed to get tickets to the show in Lisbon,” Lauren tells us. “He proposed the day before the contest on top of a viewing platform in Santa Justa.” More surprises were yet to come, as they continued their holiday in the Algarve. “Chris booked the same villa our relationship had started in,” Lauren says. “What’s more, all our friends were there to celebrate with us!” After a COVID-related date change, the pair tied the knot on 28th August, 2020, at Roslin Beach Hotel. Although they couldn’t have a reception because of restrictions in place at the time, they had bundles of fun at Southend arcades with their loved ones instead. Lauren continues the story...

All of the stationery was created by Chris’ best man, James. Since face masks were mandatory, Chris’ aunt sourced matching material to make masks for the bridesmaids and groomsmen. The day was a real family effort, and we’re so grateful to everyone who dedicated their time to make it so special. 42

Chris loves trains and works for the railway, so we opted for a subtle railway theme. He had an old wooden train that his grandad made him, which his uncl e repainted and added a carriage for people to put their card s and gifts in. The theme was also reflected in the table names, which were named after London Underground lines.

REAL WEDDINGS

Chris’ family arrived by double-decker bus, which was made even better by the fact that the best man, a groomsman and the groom’s uncle are all bus drivers. It must have been quite a sight for the neighbours to see a double-decker driving down the cul-de-sac!

LAUREN’S TOP TIP: “Enjoy it! The day goes so quickly, so embrace every moment and celebrate with the people you love. Life’s too short.”

Government restrictions meant we were only allowed a meal at the venue, not a party. The time didn’t go to waste though, as we gave everyone a pot of money and went dow n to the arcades in Southend. We got some looks in our wedding outfits!

fter meeting at university in Chelmsford, Lauren and Tiago became great friends, and it was their love of travelling and camping trips that made them the perfect couple. “It was a joint decision to get engaged in 2018, as we knew we wanted to be together for the long haul,” Lauren tells us. “We had lots of fun designing our rings together at Jewellery Design Centre in Leigh-on-Sea. We announced our engagement when both rings had been made, and a close friend took engagement photos for us at Hyde Hall in Chelmsford to mark the occasion.” After having to postpone their original date because of the pandemic, the pair tied the knot on 24th September, 2020, at West Street Vineyard in Coggeshall. We love how they wove Portuguese influences into their day, Lauren tells us how they did it… 47

We chose to get married in England and to include as many Portuguese touches as possible. We thought a vineyard wedding with gorgeous views and great Portuguese food would be the perfect mix of cultures. Coggeshall is a really beautiful and historic town, and we were able to find plenty of local accommodation for guests.

We used Portuguese tiles – or azulejos – as a motif for the day, with the table runners, ring cushion and guest book all made from the same tile-patterned fabric.

Posy & Fern made our centrepieces, and kindly posted progress updates on their Instagram page. Abigail from the company also talked me through making my own bouquet and recommended what flowers to use. I was so pleased with the result that I also made the bridesmaids’ bouquets and the men’s buttonholes.

REAL WEDDINGS

Our cake was three tiers – although we only ate one! It included a tile design that you can find at the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, which is near Tiago’s childhood home in Lisbon. The photo of the tiles was taken by the father-of-the-groom and our cake maker, Rebecca’s Sweet Perfection, printed it onto edible tiles.

Our favours were small bottles of ginjinha – a sweet Portuguese cherry liqueur, which brings back great memories of tasting it in the main squares of Lisbon. We also added an assortment of games to entertain each table. I’d highly recommend Cads About Matrimony, although you might like to filter them first! We changed our original plan for a barbecue to mini buffets on each table instead. There was a selection of Mediterranean dishes to choose from, which created a really relaxed and informal atmosphere.

The tile motif ran through our table names and place settings, including a personalised tile for the top table by @azulejosbyfonseca. We kept our seating arrangements quite flexible, which was lucky as the seating rule of six came in that week!

V-DUB Rides went above and beyond to make travelling to the venue so much fun. The flowergirls are still talking about their disco and unlimited sweets in the campervan.

49

Our pageboy accidentally dropped the rings at the key moment! We soon found Tiago’s ring in the grass but mine was quite hidden. My mum quickly offered me her ring, before mine was soon found. The registrar said it was her first wedding with three rings!

The groom wore a Ted Baker suit, which was a slightly lighter shade of blue than the groomsmen. They all wore azulejo-printed pocket squares and blue ties. My bridesmaids looked beautiful in light blue tulle dresses and rose gold floral hair accessories.

I wore Jasmine by Riki Dalal, with its layered skirt and 3D flowers. I chose it because I wanted the most comfortable gown possible, without any boning or hoops. It’s a two-piece dress, so I swapped the skirt for ivory trousers while travelling. I found a rose gold headpiece that matched the detail on the dress perfectly; having my hair off my face was also really practical.

After two years of planning, and a COVID-related postponement, we were both so relieved it was finally happening!

My brother, Harrison Dolphin, is an acoustic jazz guitarist, and he kindly offered to play on the day. During the ceremony he also performed an original arrangement that he had put together for the occasion.

DRESSING THE BRIDAL PARTY

Outfit inspo for your entire bridal party

www.dapperchapsformalwear.co.uk | https://flowtography.co.uk

You’re not the only one who wants to look their best for your big day. We’ve rounded up some top picks from Essex’s experts in dressing your bridesmaids, mums and men.

GORGEOUS GROOMSMEN

“We always advise our couples, if possible, to incorporate the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses into the men’s neckwear. This draws the whole colour scheme together and resonates beautifully in photographs.” – John Sharman and Alex Taylor, dapper chaps men’s formal wear

“Anything from our range of blue suits is still very popular for 2021. A contrasting waistcoat gives the groom and his groomsmen a stand-out look, which sets them apart from the other guests and makes it look less corporate. Tweed waistcoats are also very sought-after, giving a modern feel to the look.” – John Sharman and Alex Taylor, dapper chaps men’s formal wear

Mudassir Ali

“We feel it’s important for the groomsmen’s shoes to all match, so we have a range of styles and colours to complement the feel of the wedding. We love an Albert pocket watch chain for the groom to make him stand out from the rest of his party.” – John Sharman and Alex Taylor, dapper chaps men’s formal wear

THE SQUAD

“A morning suit is very elegant and traditional, but you can add a more contemporary twist by veering away from grey and instead considering a bright navy or stone shade. Bold coloured accessories such as fuchsia pink or red buttonholes make a striking contrast. A wedding is the perfect time to embrace colour, if not in the suit, then with accessories such as ties, socks, shirts and buttonholes. Colour trends for 2021 include burgundy, greens and blues.” – Kelly Caira, House of Colour 53

www.instagram.com/laclosetdechanel https://mariancsano.com

“Bridesmaids have traditionally all worn the same dress, but recently our brides are looking for something different. For example, if there are three bridesmaids, they’d look amazing in three different shades of pink, such as cherry blossom, amnesia rose and coral. We’ve also seen this work brilliantly with shades of lilac and blue. Bridesmaids love accessorising with hair pins and vines, and we stock a range by the lovely Dee Neicho Jewellery Designs. Dee makes them in an array of colours and bespoke designs.” – Carla Lynch, Dress Code Nine

“Multi-tonal styles are very much in. Our multiway gowns are the perfect choice for this as your girls are all wearing the same dress, but choosing a style that suits. Having them all in different colours or a mix of two or three looks great. Let’s face it, it’s already hard enough trying to get each element of your wedding day to match! It’s great for choosing shades for your bridesmaids’ own skin tone too. We’re also loving our new multiway jumpsuit – ideal for those who don’t want to wear a dress!” – Chánel Barber, Lá Closet Dé Chánel 54

https://dresscodenine.co.uk

www.instagram.com/laclosetdechanel | https://chicmedia.co.uk

“We’ve found recently that brides are giving their best girls more control over choosing their outfits so they’re more comfortable. Many opt to have different styles in the same colour or within a colour scheme. Fabrics needn’t be the same, for example chiffon mixes beautifully with sequins and tulle, so there’s lots more choice.” – Jane Parker, Bridal Shop

https://martelsbridal.co.uk

www.bridalshopltd.co.uk

“If you’re looking for a neutral tone for your best girls, then grey or navy would be an elegant choice to flatter most skin tones. For a brighter option, teal makes a statement and will look amazing in photos. Understanding whether your bridesmaids have warm or cool-toned skin will help you select the best shades for them individually.” – Kelly Caira, House of Colour Upminster and Brentwood

https://dresscodenine.co.uk www.facebook.com/deeneichojewellerydesign

BEST GIRLS

“The trends for 2021 are stylish, simple and elegant. Expect to see flattering cowl necklines, cap sleeves and fabulous pant suits. Traditional flattering colours will always be in fashion, but depending on the season, autumnal and neutral tones are proving popular too. Think coffee, terracotta and burgundy. We also have the cutest flowergirl dresses that coordinate with the teen and adult bridesmaids.” – Karen Lambert, Martels Bridal Boutique

DRESSING THE BRIDAL PARTY “Can you think of a colour you wear that gets compliments every time you wear it? Sometimes we find it difficult to identify our best colours, but often others will notice if our eyes are popping or we look healthier and younger. The power of colour is such that it can make us glow. Neutral tones are a safe choice as they mix well with brighter colours and give your look longevity. If you’d like to wear your outfit again, consider grey, beige or stone, but lift it with brightly coloured accessories or jewellery.” – Kelly Caira, House of Colour Upminster and Brentwood

MUM’S THE WORD

“Statement dressing remains key, with dresses taking centre stage. Whether fitted or flowing, there are many styles with scarf draping for extra drama and elegance. We’re loving 50s-inspired styling and sweeping, offshoulder necklines that give a super-flattering look. The colour palettes we’re seeing vary from soft pastels, such as vintage rose, to classical navy and cream with polka dots and contrasting details. Attention to detail is key, with exquisite buttons, seam details and embroideries all helping you make a lasting impression.” – Sarah Palmer, N. Shelley of Billericay

“When you’ve bought your outfit, I recommend trying it on at home in natural light to really check that it works for you. A personal stylist who is trained in colour analysis will be able to identify the best colours for you and point you towards your wow colours, which are the ones to choose for a special occasion.” – Kelly Caira, House of Colour Upminster and Brentwood

“Hats, or rather hatinators, make a statement but are not heavy on the head. Most mothers want a hat that they can keep on through to the reception, but doesn’t affect their hairstyle when removed. Sheer mesh details and feathers are particularly popular this season. Matching shoes and clutch bags in soft metallic shades and tonal patents look best, while understated yet comfortable is key for footwear. We have a selection in all heel heights.” – Sarah Palmer, N. PLANNING S SO We get unmissable wed-min advice from local experts

W

e know that planning a wedding can be stressful at times – even more so during a pandemic. Wouldn’t it be great if you had a team of talented wedding suppliers to give you their top tips? Well, that’s where we come in! We’ve pulled together a whole host of advice from some of the county’s best wedding companies to help you get that to-do list ticked off…

What are your top tips for booking a photographer? Your photos are one of the few things that you get to keep from your big day, so make sure you choose a photographer who can really capture you as a couple. Have a look at the photographer’s website, read their reviews and browse through their social media to get a feel for their style. If their photos make you smile, laugh or tug at your heart strings, you’re on the right path! How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? Group shots can be as formal or as fun as you like, even when

HYLANDS ESTATE

What are your top tips for finding a venue during the pandemic? It’s wise to think about wedding insurance when you’re at the booking stage; this can give you peace of mind when confirming contracts and paying deposits. If you find your plans have to change, don’t panic! Get in touch with your venue to see if an adapted version of your special day is possible. At Hylands we’re flexible about postponements for those who want to wait for their big day, and we also offer an hourly rate for anyone who wants to press ahead with a smaller ceremony when restrictions allow. www.lavenhamphotographic.co.uk

GOSFIELD HALL AND LEEZ PRIORY How can you reassure couples during the pandemic? Throughout the pandemic, couples have preferred to have a viewing appointment from the comfort and safety of their own home. We offer a 3D virtual tour for couples considering having their wedding with us, as well as for those who have already booked to help refresh their minds with a tour of the house and gardens. While restrictions have meant our venues are not available for visits, there is always a team member at the end of the phone, email or on social media. At Country House Weddings we’ve brought in our COVID-19 promise. It protects couples should government legislation surrounding the pandemic prevent their day from going ahead, guaranteeing that we’ll transfer the wedding package to an equivalent date with no additional fee. Aly Claydon-Mills | www.countryhouseweddings.co.uk 58

working under social distancing or venue restrictions; the trick is to plan ahead with your photographer. Work out in advance which family and friends will be in each group photo, the best locations, timings and even what style you’d like. Your photographer can then ensure this part of the day runs smoothly. Anesta Broad | www.weddingsbyanesta.com If you have a dry-hire venue, like Hylands, you may be able to find a smaller space for your wedding. This allows you to scale down your plans while keeping the location you’ve always wanted. Julie Weight | www.hylandsestateweddings.co.uk

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNA MARIE

What are your top tips for booking a photographer? A lot of post-wedding regrets are often photography related. To make a wise choice, find the photographer you want, rather than the package you want. You can always add albums, wall art, etc., but you can’t make bad images look good. Choose someone you trust, who is calm, collected and ready to capture your story in every moment. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? Don’t get disheartened; this will still be the best day of your life. Write down what will make it so special. Is it the people? The venue? The date? Agree on this together and this will help you make your decisions about when to adapt and when to stick to your guns. Try to choose suppliers who can be flexible – and let them know your priorities so they can work with your best interest at heart. Anna Marie Cooper | www.photographybyannamarie.com

ROUND ONE

PLANNING SOS

ROUND TWO SQUIDGER & WATSON CAKES

How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? The pandemic has caused so many issues, but this doesn’t need to be the case for your cake. Cakes can be made smaller and with less tiers to accommodate fewer guests. However, I’ve never heard anyone say that too much cake is a problem! So if you have your heart set on a showstopper cake, then don’t forget any leftovers can be frozen and eaten at a later date.

www.instagram.com/daniela.nagy.photo

Sarah Campbell | www.swcakes.co.uk

https://chicmedia.co.uk

www.happyhippiephotography.co.uk

What are your top tips for getting your dream wedding cake? Don’t worry if you don’t know exactly what you’d like your cake to look like when you first meet your cake designer. It’s a great idea to gather some pictures or discuss different features you might like included in your design. Let them know the key elements of your day, such as the colour scheme, theme or overall feel you’re going for. This will help your designer create a stunning cake just for you.

SIMPLY STUNNING FLOWERS

What are your top tips for booking a florist? It’s a good idea to choose a florist who is local to your venue. Not only does this cut down on any delivery costs, but you can also rest assured that they will know the area and venue, so your flowers will arrive in good time and be arranged perfectly. If you have a budget in mind, it’s best to discuss this upfront with your florist. This means we can suggest the best flower options and designs to suit. I have three flower packages on my website, which prove useful as a starting point and extras can always be added. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? Throughout this time I have spoken to all of my couples, whether they want to move their wedding date or change their florals. Some couples decided to stick with their original flower order even for a smaller wedding to retain an opulent feel. Carefully placed floral designs mixed with candles and lanterns can make a large room feel very intimate. I also appreciate that the pandemic may have affected couples’ budgets, and some orders have been reduced to just a bridal bouquet and groom’s buttonhole. I’m always happy to ensure brides and grooms have beautiful flowers however big or small. Victoria Makepeace | www.simplystunningflowers.co.uk

AMANDA’S BEAUTIFUL CEREMONIES

What are your top tips for booking a celebrant? When looking for a celebrant, start by researching their social media to see if they feel genuine. When you talk to them, do you feel a connection? You want someone who you feel you can trust, who is approachable and also open-minded. After all, you’re trusting them with the most important aspect of your day: the ceremony. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? Celebrants are great at being creative, thinking outside the box and remaining calm, so there’s lots we can do to help in the circumstances. Celebrant ceremonies can take place anywhere, from your back garden to a woodland, so the rush for a licensed venue is not an issue; this is a real bonus because of the backlog of weddings that the pandemic has created. If you’ve had to postpone and can’t get a registry office date that matches your venue booking, then consider a celebrant ceremony instead and complete the legalities before or after. For smaller weddings, your ceremony can be rewritten to include family and friends, or adapted for an intimate elopement-style wedding. Amanda Wheal | www.amandasceremonies.com 59

ROUND THREE ARROW VINTAGE CARS

What are your top tips for booking wedding transport? Try to find a company with a long-established track record – recommendations are always a good guide. Check your budget and don’t get carried away with either the cheapest around, or indeed overpay because you fall in love with the car! Next up, see if the company has a back-up vehicle, just in case, and give them details of the venue to ensure they cover your area. How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? In these abnormal times, we are happy to be flexible for our couples who have decided to go ahead with weddings that are reduced in numbers. We’re always willing to adapt to changes and assist where required. If your wedding is postponed because of COVID regulations, that’s also not a problem. We will move your booking to a new date without any transfer fees, and we’ll honour the agreed price even if your wedding moves to 2022 or 2023. Carl Browse | www.arrowvintagecars.co.uk

HAIR BY DUBOUX

www.jessicabevanphotography.com

What are your top tips for booking a hair stylist? Vital to the smooth running of the day is working out timings. The dream scenario is that you’ll be staying at the venue the night before so we can maximise the time spent on prep for you and your party. However, if you’re arriving in the morning, or will be travelling to the venue after getting ready, then notify your stylist as this will need to be factored into the schedule. If you’re undecided on your hairstyle, then why not go for a two-in-one? You could consider having Hollywood waves for the ceremony before changing to a glam ponytail for the evening reception, ready to dance the night away. I’m always happy to be onhand for a quick restyle!

IRIE J

What are your top tips for booking a live performer? It’s a good idea to get a breakdown of exactly what you’re paying for. This could include performing during the ceremony, at the wedding breakfast, for the first dance and while your evening guests arrive. What should couples planning their wedding during the pandemic consider? Make sure you’re clear with your suppliers about what happens if restrictions change. You may like to have an agreement in place in the event of cancellation or postponement. Ask if your deposit will be carried over if you reschedule, and check if you can renegotiate a price that’s fair to both parties if you downscale your day. Irie J | http://www.iriej.com 60

How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic? I have chosen to support my couples by honouring new dates with no additional charges and securing bookings with no hidden costs or price increases in line with inflation. The stress of planning a wedding – let alone in a pandemic – can be overwhelming, and I wanted to be on hand and as transparent as possible. It’s important to familiarise yourself with the T&Cs of your chosen suppliers. Many make-up artists and hairstylists will have a booking minimum or basic package for peak dates. However, if you’re having a smaller wedding, don’t be put off. I recommend still reaching out to enquire with details of your requirements. Sally-Kate Duboux | www.hairbyduboux.com

hen we saw the theme for this shoot – botanical and ethereal with a mythical touch – we could not resist! Dreamed up by Sabina Mahendran of Makeup by Sabina M, the light and airy Orangery at Downham Hall was the perfect setting for this enchanting scene. “The key elements that brought everything together were leafy and unstructured florals, the golden Midas crown and the fluid and romantic gowns,” Sabina says. “Paired with soft, glowing make-up and an effortless low bun, our bride looked like an ethereal fairy queen.” The classic green and white palette, accented with botanical elements, makes this a stunning big-day look… 63

BERRY NICE

Natura Siberica has launched an affordable vegan-certified range of beauty products based exclusively on altai oblepikha berries, a rich source of vitamin C. From face masks to serums, the C-Berrica collection has it all. I like the sound of the Renewal Foaming Face Powder (£8.49), which foams gently when it meets water and cleanses your skin, helping to remove impurities and make-up residue. Plus, its BHA acids improve skin texture speeding up cell renewal and deep cleans pores. Discover the full collection at www.naturasiberica.co.uk

No need for needles! CLEAN AND CLEAR

We all know about the barrage of environmental abuse our facial skin battles on a daily basis, but what about our scalps? They too are faced with the impact of sweat, pollution, and various styling products. Centred creative director Kieran Tudor says, “Good scalp health is crucial for strong, healthy, beautiful hair, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes to hair care regimes.” A deeply nourishing blend of olive, argan and hemp oils, Centred En-Root Scalp Treatment replenishes moisture to dry brittle hair, while exfoliating the scalp and removing product build up and dead skin cells. What’s more, the blend of rosemary and peppermint essential oils stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles maximising hair growth potential. Priced at £36 from www.wearecentred.com

Self-tanning fave Skinny Tan has unveiled its latest product – Notox Beauty Elixir. It’s a smoothing, plumping facial serum specifically formulated to supply your skin with instant anti-aging effects and a glowing gradual selftan. Using stoechiol naturally derived from butterfly lavender, it immobilises wrinkles and re-densifies the epidermis leading to a rapid and lasting reduction in the depth of express lines. So, say “no” to Botox, and “yes” to Notox! Getting Zoom-ready and embracing the minimal make-up look has never been easier. Notox Beauty Elixir is available at www.skinnytan.co.uk, priced at £19.99.

Beauty I don’t wear much make-up normally. How will I know what styles and shades will suit me for my big day? This is a common problem for brides, especially because your wedding day is when you want to look and feel your best. I recommend finding a make-up artist whose work suits the look you’re trying to achieve and who is also experienced in working with your skin type. I offer my brides a skincare consultation when they book with me. This helps me understand their skin needs, and I’ll also cover the styles and shades that suit their features. Naturally, our complexion changes throughout the year, so be mindful of selecting shades to suit the time of year you’re getting married.

Q&A Our local pros solve your problems

LOVE YOUR CURLS

I have very curly hair. How can I get it looking its best and what styles will keep it tame all day? Curly hair can be tricky to handle, especially in the unpredictable English weather! Here are my tips for managing your gorgeous locks…

Rue Garande | Shades of Beauty Essex www.shadesofbeautyessex.co.uk

How can I get a fresh, glowing make-up look for my spring wedding? You want to look and feel like you’re glowing from within on your wedding day. Remember, bridal make-up should be an enhancement of your natural beauty. With a dewy make-up style you’ll end up looking fresh-faced, classical and most importantly, beautiful. I often use Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter underneath the foundation to boost my brides’ complexions with its glowing properties. A spring glow is achieved by keeping your make-up simple yet modern, complemented with a rosy complexion and romantic just-pinched cheeks. Enhancing your eyes is key to any bridal look. Try using smokey colours with subtle definition along your top and bottom lash line. Neutral cool tones work well for springtime, such as pinks, beiges, soft greys and maybe a little shimmer for that extra sparkle. To keep your make-up light and natural, we can make the most of your lips without going too bold. Try a subtle peach or pink lip colour to complete the look. GO WITH THE GLOW

❤ A half-up-half-down style is perfect for showing off your curls. If you don’t want it really curly, then have a professional curly blow dry for a smoother version. ❤ If you want an up do, but you still want to embrace your curls, then gently pin it up after your blow dry. You may find having it all up a little harsh if you’re used to your curls, so try teasing a couple of pieces out to soften the look. ❤ If you’re embracing your natural hair on your big day, then using the right products is essential. There are lots available, from serums to smoothing creams, which will help to control and hold your style all day. ❤ Use a good shampoo and conditioner in the lead-up and take care with colouring so you don’t over-process your hair. This will dry it out and you will lose that beautiful shine. ❤ If you’re styling your own hair, a good set of tongs is invaluable, and you don’t have to spend a fortune. I love Babyliss Pro tongs. ❤ Finish your completed style with a good wax spray such as Redken Wax Blast 10. Don’t overload with hairspray as it won’t give you any extra hold. NATURAL BEAUTY

Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane Glo, £19.99 Available at Argos, ASDA, Boots, Tesco and Wilko Dermaplaning as a salon treatment has been around for a while, and quite frankly the very thought of it has always terrified me. So, I wasn’t too sure what to expect of this tool. I did my research on the benefits, genned up on this super-useful tutorial and I was ready to go. Wow, I don’t know what I was so worried about. It was easy to do and took no more than five to 10 minutes. Probably 10 for me as I got a bit addicted and couldn’t stop – I don’t recommend that though. It’s an incredibly satisfying process seeing all of that peach fuzz and dead skin disappear. I couldn’t believe how smooth my skin felt afterwards. Leave your skin to rest for around eight hours afterwards before you apply any skin products or make-up as it’s quite an intense exfoliation process, then repeat every two to four weeks. I can’t wait to see how regular use improves my skin further. I’m definitely sold on dermaplaning!

https://youtu.be/S2b5jX4yNyA

Kevyn Aucoin Kaleidochrome All-Over Highlight Palette, £39 www.lookfantastic.com This multi-tasking palette offers four shades of highlight suitable whatever the look you’re going for. I particularly loved the darker rose Space Party, which I used on my cheeks over my blusher for a radiant glow and Super Cosmic, which I added to the arch of my eyebrows and very top of my cheekbones. It really brought a multi-dimensional look to my make-up that can be tailored for day or night.

Eve Lom Radiance Transforming Mask, £65 www.spacenk.com

TRIED AND TESTED

I was surprised to find a balm texture when I first removed the lid, so was interested to see how this would go. Using the supplied spatula to remove the required amount of mask from the tub, I opted for generous dollop and began to massage it into my face as instructed. Its thick formula felt incredibly luxurious and I could already tell it was going to provide a pampering experience. I was particularly delighted by the advice to leave for a minimum of 30 minutes, which gave me an excuse to relax for a decent amount of time – none of this 10 minutes rubbish! When it was time to remove with warm water, I was delighted to find my skin looking renewed, beautifully supple and glowing.

PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP CWM’s beauty editor puts this season’s best buys to the test creating a head-to-toe makeover session you’ll love

Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Lip Duo, £18 www.sculptedbyaimee.com I’m a huge advocate for lip liners and their myriad benefits, but I do struggle to know which shade goes with which lipstick, find the two become separated and will admit to resenting buying both in the first place. So, these Lip Duos are a blessing! Not only are they perfectly colour matched offering you two products for the average price of one, but if your make-up bag is already packed, like mine, they offer a smart solution. I tried Mauve Match, which is a versatile neutral shade, ideal for everyday wear.

No Secrets One Body Jelly, £49 www.nosecretsbeauty.com This jellied body oil smells absolutely incredible with No Secrets’ signature blend of essential oils – bergamot, juniper, petitgrain, eucalyptus and lavender. Less messy than a traditional body oil, you just need to massage a little in at a time for smooth and beautifully soft skin. Plus, the amazing fragrance lasts. Perfect for a pamper.

Margaret Dabbs Cracked Heel Treatment, £18 www.margaretdabbs.co.uk Let me start by confessing that my heels are horrendous, always cracked and dry and nothing I try makes a difference. Until now that is. This product was well and truly put through its paces by my horrible hooves and the results were instant. After just one application the sandpaper effect was gone and with continued use it really is a miracle worker. It’s my new beauty essential, and I can’t wait to get the flip flops on! 83

amed for her flawless skin, popular TV personality Jess Wright is a busy, gogetting woman. Whether she’s on a shoot, busy filming, hosting her podcast – Girls #NoFilter, planning next year’s wedding to William Lee-Kemp, or hard at work in her role as Crystal Clear’s first celebrity ambassador, her perfect skin is the envy of all. Keen to know her secret, CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews sat down for a chat with the reality star to get the lowdown, just for you! Jess, thanks for making time in your hectic schedule to talk to us and huge congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. How do you imagine your big day? Thank you! I imagine it to be beautiful, full of love and hopefully classy. As long as I’m surrounded by my family and loved ones, that’s the most important thing. How did William propose? He did it on the balcony of our beautiful hotel room in the mountains in Courchevel. It was both spectacular and amazing. What’s your vision for your bridal beauty look? Good skin is the perfect base so I’ll be prepping with some fab Crystal Clear COMCIT facials in the run up to the big day for sure. Then I’ll want my make-up to be slightly natural, with that dewy glow and some wispy lashes.

Absolutely

FLAWLESS

Our beauty editor caught up with Jess Wright to discuss wedding plans and just how she achieves that perfect complexion

Do you have a picture of your dream dress in mind? I’ve tried on so many dresses, but I definitely have a vision. I think I’ve chosen the one. Completely understand you playing the cards close to your chest there! We look forward to the surprise. As the voice of experience, can you share with us your top wedding planning tips? I’d say, make sure you have a good wedding planner. Also, do the guest list, but don’t send the invitations out until later, as it’ll definitely alter as time goes on! So many couples have been forced to re-plan their weddings as a result of the pandemic. Have you encountered any such difficulties and do you have any advice for other couples facing the same challenges? We’ve considered moving the wedding, but

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

at the minute it’s a day-by-day update, so we’re going to make the final decision in the spring. If you’re not time restricted, I’d say move yours to 2022 if possible, so you can really enjoy the process rather than struggling through the pandemic. Leading a jam-packed celebrity lifestyle while planning a wedding must make you an extremely busy lady! How do you juggle it all while still looking fabulous and flawless? I love keeping busy, so I was really excited about planning a wedding on top of my already hectic lifestyle, but unfortunately

that hasn’t happened as the pandemic and various lockdowns have slowed me down. It has meant though that I’ve had plenty of time on my hands to plan the wedding! What are your make-up bag must haves? I love Chanel foundation for a quick matte bronze. Also, a good eyebrow pencil and a nourishing lip balm. I always keep the Crystal Clear Beach Glow Tanning Drops in my kit too. They’re amazing for adding a subtle glow to your skin and you can dial it up depending on the depth of colour you’re looking for. Tell us why you love Crystal Clear. I’m so excited to be chosen as the first ever ambassador for Crystal Clear Skincare. Their products are my holy grail and having tried so many different brands over the years, I just love the results you get with Crystal Clear, so it’s amazing to be working with the brand. The range is extensive with something to suit all skin types and concerns. The Ionic Sonic2 Microdermabrasion Kit is my ultimate secret to Insta-ready, super-cleansed skin. I’m also a big fan of the salon treatments, especially the COMCIT facial. It really is the most fantastic treatment for softer, firmer and hydrated skin.

Which is your favourite product from the range? I’d have to say The Lifting Wand, one of the brand’s beauty tools. It comes with its pharma-grade product, which is packed with hyaluronic acid. You use it for 60 seconds every day and it gives you deep hydration, depuffs eyes, plumps skin and lifts it. It’s really easy to use and fits into your daily routine. For a quick skin fix, I’d also highly recommend the 10 Minute Glow Mask, which literally does what it says on the tin and gives you glowing skin in just 10 minutes. It’s incredibly satisfying to peel off as well! What’s your number one beauty tip for brides? Focus on your skin. Glowing skin is the best thing on your wedding day in terms of beauty, so do whatever you need to make it feel its best. Finally, what’s next for you? Hopefully my wedding! Also, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the musical I’m in. This is all dependant on the pandemic though. Sending my love to everyone at this time. What makes Kymani different from other glamping operators is the ability for groups of up to 40 people to hire the sites out exclusively allowing you and your hens to get away from it all whilst having the whole place to yourselves. The concept behind Kymani is that each trip should be as unique as each group of people is. The sites will offer a range of

HOT TOPIC Our experts help you plan your dream day

Q: What are your top tips for finding my dream dress? While a lot of us are spending time at home, brides have the perfect opportunity to get researching their dream gown. We actively encourage this by guiding brides to our website, where you can browse all of our dresses. We are currently offering virtual appointments, which have proved to be great fun! We can put your favourite dresses on a mannequin to view via a video link. We also get to know you and can pull out other styles for you to look at and send further videos and photos. When it’s safe to come into store, we can have your favourites ready

ALL ABOUT US

and waiting for you. At your appointment, we recommend wearing a strapless bra for trying on – although you normally don’t need to wear one when your dress is fitted. You can also wear tights; if you become warm when trying on, this makes it easier to slip the dresses on and off. When looking for your dress, keep an open mind and try on lots of different styles – even if you think you won’t like them. Most brides leave with a completely different look to what they originally had in mind. Most importantly, relax and have fun with it! Sharyn Warner | Bridal Reloved Maldon www.bridalreloved.co.uk

Q: We’re overwhelmed by the amount of wedding styles and themes. How do we narrow down the choices and find something to reflect us? A great place to start is by discussing what you both want from the day and what’s most important to you. Incorporating personal touches will help to make the day feel unique, whether it’s a colour, a favourite flower or your love for travelling or music. These are all things you can reflect in the styling to give your day personality. You can even get hands-on and create DIY props or signage to make the day feel more personal. Pinterest, blogs and magazines are a great way to source inspiration, and social media is a fab place to discuss ideas with like-minded people – you’ll be amazed at the brilliant ideas you can find. We ask our couples to create a must-have list. We can look at this, the budget and venue to make decisions on what will and won’t work. A mood board is then created to tie all the ideas together. It’s key to remember that the day is about you and it should reflect that. You don’t have to stick to traditions – be as bold as you want! Hollie Kneller | Love Rocks | https://yourloverocks.com 92

HOW TO FIND THE ONE

ASK THE EXPERTS

IT TAKES TWO

Q: We aren’t sure how to plan for our wedding because of the pandemic. My friend suggested a sequel wedding, but what exactly does this mean? Sequel weddings are becoming increasingly popular as a way to meet the needs of modern life. They’re great for couples who want to mark this important life event under COVID-related restrictions or as a way of having a more personal ceremony after the formality required in a religious or short legal ceremony. Perhaps the wedding took place abroad and excluded friends and family? After a formal legal ceremony, the following sequel wedding offers an opportunity to create a very personal expression of love that can acknowledge different beliefs and tastes in a way that a traditional ceremony can’t. It can be held at any time and in any place – there are no restrictions. It can be as formal or relaxed as you like and can incorporate elements from varying faiths and ethnic traditions. It can also allow the acknowledgement of the blending of families and enables couples to fully express their personalities and values. As a celebrant, I will work with you to create a unique and memorable wedding that’s full of expression, shared stories and love.

IN AN ENGLISH COUNTRY GARDEN

Q: We’re having a quintessentially English spring wedding. How do we make the most of the season with our flowers? Spring is such a beautiful time of year for flowers; you still have some late-winter varieties as well as earlysummer flowers alongside the main spring blooms. It’s so important for quality and cost to work with as many seasonal flowers as you can. At this time of year you have an array of options such a tulips, irises, ranunculi, hyacinths, sweet peas, anemones, syringas and stocks, along with yearround florals such as roses, lillies, gerberas and many more. I would suggest a mix of flowers, such as the traditional garden rose with blousy peonies, along with more costeffective seasonal flowers such as tulips to even out prices. Spring has an array of colours to choose from, so multi or single tones can be used. I’d also be sure to use plenty of pretty foliage such as green bell, eucalyptus and ruscus. QUINTESSENTIALLY BRITISH This season, British Independent brand Favourbrook has a multitude of classic menswear pieces that will elevate your big-day look. The velvet jacket collection features a number of different styles of varying formality, each one a great investment in itself and a beautiful introduction to elegant formalwear. Lovers of tradition will adore the traditional double-breasted styles with a contrasting black velvet shawl lapel edged with black braid and black velvet covered buttons. With wedding season and Royal Ascot hopefully returning this year, its perennial morning coats and waistcoats boast double-breasted shawl lapel styles in linen, single-breasted options in cotton corduroy and you won’t find a larger collection of luxury waistcoats anywhere else. Retreat to ty the ci

Hannah Faulder visits The Marylebone, and finds out that it offers the best of both worlds for a minimoon in the capital

A

s the country prepared for Lockdown Part II, my husband and I managed to sneak in a last-minute escape to the city to enjoy a much-needed retreat at The Marylebone. Nestled in the hotel’s supertrendy namesake neighbourhood, between the Georgian Welbeck Street and the partpedestrianised Marylebone Lane, you’re just a short walk from London’s most famous Monopoly locations, from Bond Street to Mayfair. Stepping out for a stroll from the hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a bustling Cotswolds village – that is until you happen upon Oxford Street. But this is what makes it such a wonderful destination for a minimoon or post-wedding break: it’s close to the action, but it provides a tranquil retreat from it too.

STAY Cross the threshold, and you’ll find a neutral palette offsets the pops of colour and modern paintings on the walls perfectly. Look carefully, and you’ll notice a subtle design scheme reflecting the four seasons as you walk through the hotel. Following an extensive refurbishment, the striking decor extends throughout, and no luxurious touch has been spared. Classic timber flooring, marble-topped counters and wood panelling blend seamlessly with curated artwork and designer furniture. There’s a

whole host of event spaces too for weddings and celebrations with real character; I particularly loved the verdant Palm Room and the sociable al fresco terraces. Our corner suite was chic and fresh, its spacious circular layout houses a small kitchen area, complete with Nespresso machine, a sumptuous living area, dining table and huge marshmallowy bed. “We could live here,” my husband and I kept saying to each other. We sat, champagne in hand, and gazed out of the window over the pretty streets of Marylebone with the city lights glittering in the distance; it had a distinct Mary Poppins vibe. The striking marble bathroom boasted a huge bath, walk-in shower and trendy Malin+Goetz toiletries. The welcome pack with COVIDsafe goodies like hand sanitiser was gratefully received, and the hotel clearly states all the measures it has taken to look after guests’ wellbeing. Looking to really treat yourself and your loved one? The super-stylish Marylebone Suite has a showstopping cedar-clad terrace, with a retractable roof, awesome vistas and an outdoor TV and fireplace – it’s certainly memorable! While you’re here, why not treat yourself to some R&R in the Third Space Health Club, with its gym and 18m pool.

EAT We dragged ourselves away from the champagne and fluffy robes long enough to enjoy the hotel’s restaurant, 108 Brasserie. This is not a typical hotel restaurant, more a fabulous eatery for locals and tourists alike

that just happens to be attached. Set on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane, the outdoor seating with patio heaters makes it look so inviting. Inside, you’ll find traditional style with a modern edge, from rich upholstery and parquet flooring to antique mirrors and decadent florals. The meals on the globally inspired menu feature fresh ingredients with a focus on seasonality. Yummy burrata, salads and decadent desserts were the order of the day, making the restaurant a mustvisit for guests.

EXPLORE The next morning, we treated ourselves to a full English breakfast (one vegetarian) in bed, with hearty portions served under silver cloches, before heading out on foot to explore the neighbourhood. This soon turned into a wonderful day strolling through the nearby Royal Parks, spotting parrots and pelicans before ducking into a café for a takeaway coffee as we meandered up The Mall to take in Buckingham Palace. Next up was a stroll through Hyde Park and into the shopping mecca that is Oxford Street before heading back for a quiet drink at the hotel’s bar – perfection! If you don’t get the best weather, though, the capital’s attractions are within easy reach on public transport – or you could just hunker down in your room and luxuriate in your newly wedded bliss.
