elighted doesn’t even come close to describing how I felt when I was offered the position of Editor on your favourite wedding magazine. A bornand-bred Essex girl, I’ve worked on bridal publications for a fair few years, and love nothing more than seeing couples plan and celebrate one of the best days of their lives. Married for nearly 14 years after tying the knot at Gosfield Hall – see my wedding photo below – I understand the excitement, anticipation and stress that comes with organising your nuptials. With that in mind sit back, put your feet up, grab a glass of fizz and let me take some of that hard work away from you! PS: If I’ve one piece of advice, it’s to invest in a videographer, if you can afford one. My husband and I didn’t, and last year I became seriously unwell with a brain injury. As such I’ve lost a lot of memories for good, which includes our actual wedding day itself. I’d love nothing more than to sit back and see my friends and family on film enjoying what I’ve been told was an incredible day.

IN IT TO WIN IT When South Woodham Ferrers midwife Natalie Chapman and her paramedic fiancé Mark Bomford entered a competition for NHS workers to win an incredible Essex wedding, worth more than £26,000, they never dreamt they’d win – until they were surprised outside the hospital they work at, surrounded by friends and family! The competition was organised by Thorpe-le-Soken-based florist and venue stylist Rosie Obeney of Rose Decor Styling – www.rosedecorstyling.co.uk – who wanted to give something back to NHS staff working throughout the pandemic. “I have a big list of amazing people I love to work with in the industry, so I put the feelers out and the response was incredible,” she says. “I was inundated with amazing businesses offering up their services to one lucky couple.” In total 26 multi-award-winning Essex wedding suppliers teamed up, from the photography and videography right down to flowers, bridal hair and outfits. Held at Tuffon Hall Vineyard on 3rd March, 2022, Natalie and Mark were gifted wedding stationery, catering, decorations, transport, entertainment, occasion wear and more. “Our wedding day was perfect from beginning to end,” say the newlyweds. “We are so incredibly grateful for all of the suppliers coming together to give us this unbelievable gift, and making our wedding day so special.”

My husband and I both opted for the pan-fried scallops to start, served with fennel compote, pickled apple, seaweed and caviar sauce. I then chose the grilled skate with capers, brown shrimp, cucumber and chicken butter sauce, which literally melted in the mouth, while my husband enjoyed a chunky fillet of halibut, complemented by parmesan gnocchi, chanterelle mushrooms and a shellfish sauce. He was then too full for dessert, but I personally couldn’t resist, asking my server what she’d recommend. She suggested I try the Paris-Brest, choux pastry filled with praline mousseline and topped with a warm chocolate sauce. Baked to order, it was absolutely worth the wait! ess and Jac were best friends at secondary school before becoming a couple aged 20. “Six years later we booked a trip to Budapest for a break,” says Jess. “Little did I know that Jac was planning to propose on a cruise down the River Danube – but thick fog meant the boat didn’t move! Instead, we went for a walk on our final night, stopping for a moment outside the Hungarian Parliament Building. Jac asked a passer-by to take our picture, and, as we posed, he produced a ring from his pocket and got down on one knee. I burst out crying, said ‘yes’ immediately – then had to FaceTime our families straight away!” The couple chose the 27th November, 2021 for their wedding, saying ‘I do’ at Greenwoods Hotel & Spa in Stock. Here, Jess tell us all about their big day…

obyn and Kieran met in the very modern world of online dating, after liking each other’s images on Tinder! “Despite living within a very close radius, our paths didn’t cross until that all-important ‘swipe-right’!” laughs Robyn. “We hit it off instantly and enjoyed our first date three weeks later at a local Turkish restaurant. The rest as they say is history, as we became inseparable from then on in.” Five years later, the couple were enjoying what Robyn thought was a holiday at her second home in Crete. “I’m half-Greek and my dad lives there, so I didn’t have any inkling anything was up when we flew out in August 2020,” she continues. “Little did I know that Kieran had already asked for my dad’s permission to marry me, via a UK/Greek translated Facebook message and video call! On the night he proposed Kieran took me to my favourite restaurant, set inside an old mill, where a private table had been set up with floral displays and rose petals. After dinner we made our way to a bridge over the watermill to have our picture taken – and when I turned around Kieran was down on one knee. I will remember it forever as one of the best days of my life.” The couple set the date of Friday 1st October, 2021, saying ‘I do’ at The Holy Family & All Saints Catholic Church in Witham, before enjoying their reception at Chelmsford’s Hatfield Place. Here, Robyn tells us more about their amazing day…

TO THE MANOR BORN The couple had always dreamed of a manor-house style wedding, but were put off by the interior of other stately homes. “Hatfield Place, however, took our breath away – stunningly simplistic but equally imposing from the outside, it was the inside that really won us over,” says Robyn. “It felt like we were walking onto a Bridgerton or Downton Abbey set, and we loved the fact that the Georgian veranda spanned the full exterior of the property, meaning it would be an ideal place for family and friends to gather. Then there was the modern Orangery extension, nestled at the back of the walled garden. Despite being newly-built, it made for the ideal party spot – with a 200-person capacity, twinkling dancefloor and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens, we were instantly sold.” With a theme of simplistic autumn-chic, the pair felt whites and greens were the ideal colours to tie their day together. “Gypsophila and white hydrangeas were central to our floral scheme and featured throughout, from the centre-piece displays and buttonholes to church pedestals,” the bride continues. “When it came to my bouquet, I wanted a whimsical feel, with more gypsophila and hydrangeas alongside eucalyptus, fern and David Austen roses. The sage green element was incorporated throughout, too, from the bridesmaids’ dresses to our invites and their satin bows. As a nod to my engagement ring, I knew I also wanted gold touches, with gold-foiling on the table-plan to gold wax seals and a gold cake topper. knew it was the one for me,” she says. “An off-shoulder, Bardot-style, with floral embroidered and Chantilly lace throughout, it had an illusion corset at the back and was Champagne underlined. My accessories to complement it were simple but stunning – diamond halo studs which my mum bought for me for my 30th birthday, as well as two pearl slides in my hair. I teamed the gown with some ivory lace shoes from Ted Baker, as again I wanted it to be all about the dress.” Kieran also didn’t fail to impress on the day, choosing a bespoke tailored tuxedo with added silk lapels and bowtie. “It fitted him like a glove and was very James Bond-esque – needless to say he looked incredible!” says Robyn. “His groomsmen also wore tuxedos but with plain lapels, and our three pageboys wore matching mini five-piece tuxedos complete with waistcoats. They looked beyond cute!” For the bridesmaids, Robyn again turned to her theme of sage green, with pleated floor-length dresses from Little Mistress, while the flower girls wore ivory silk and organza dresses from Children’s Occasion. “They looked adorable with hand-made flower crowns and ballerina buns!”

REAL WEDDINGS

MORE THAN WORDS After feasting on a delicious wedding breakfast of tomato and mozzarella salad, roast chicken with Dauphinoise potatoes and molten chocolate pudding, it was time for the speeches, with hardly a dry eye in the house. “Kieran’s two best friends were joint best men, and my mum did a phenomenal speech on behalf of her and my dad – it’s something I’ll cherish forever,” smiles the bride. “Kieran did himself proud, too, capturing a brilliant balance of emotion, humour and wit. There were lots of tears, plenty of laughs and a few handover-face moments, but it was all in pretty good taste!” It was then time to throw a party to remember. “Entertainment was high up on our priority list, ensuring that the dance floor was never empty,” continues Robyn. “We had a DJ, band and saxophonist, creating a tight schedule to ensure there were never gaps. The DJ started around 7pm and played our first dance – Ed Sheeran’s Best Part of Me – followed by the cutting of the cake. The band did two one-hour sets; the saxophonist played for a couple of hours; and then the DJ re-joined the party until gone midnight! It was truly amazing – we had the guests up doing Zorba the Greek behind the top table before dessert, and we were launched onto our friends’ shoulders in typical Wedding Crashers-style!”

SUPPLY AND DEMAND With the shortage of fuel up and down the country happening just a week prior to Robyn and Kieran’s big day, the couple were worried that some guests might not even be able to get to their wedding. “Luckily that wasn’t the case, and we were able to relax and enjoy ourselves after all the stressful build-up and uncertainty due to Covid,” says Robyn. “We made a mental note to savour the day and to not let any small mishaps stress us out – and that’s exactly what we did! From start to finish it was the best day of our lives, seeing faces we hadn’t seen for months. Being able to make such a special commitment to one another in front of family and friends was quite literally the best feeling in the world.” Choosing the right wedding photographer was also instrumental to the couple’s big day, with Robyn and Kieran finding everything they wanted in Anna Marie. “She’s phenomenal, specialising in really natural pictures which tell a story. We didn’t feel at all staged or posed and were able to reflect on the day while still being present in the moment. The videographer was brilliant, too – capturing so many moments we would otherwise eventually forget over time. One of our favourite songs is Erasure’s A Little Respect, and as soon as this played the dancefloor was flooded – it’s captured on our wedding video and still gives us goosebumps.” 39

emma met Andrew on a night out at a bar in Hertfordshire. “Andrew was with his mates, and I was with mine, but I was too shy to go over myself,” says the bride. “After telling my friends that I liked ‘that guy with the tattoos’ they went over for me and asked if he’d take me out on a date! He instantly agreed, and we went for dinner and drinks a couple of days later.” The couple had already discussed getting married, so it wasn’t a total shock for Gemma when Andrew proposed at the top of The Shard in London. “Having said that, I was still over the moon that he’d asked, and couldn’t wait to start planning our big day.” The wedding was set for the 1st October, 2021, with Down Hall Hotel & Spa as the chosen venue. Here, Gemma tells us more about their day… 43

We decided on a long top table, with eight round tables of 10 placed around the outer edge of the dancefloor. They were decorated with a mix of candelabras with black candles and tall flower centrepieces. Andrew looked incredible in his black tailored evening suit, which he teamed with a white shirt, belt, cufflinks and bowtie.

I didn’t want to wear a white wedding dress – instead I chose Ian Stuart’s Mardi Gras gown in rose pink. I also opted for a birdcagestyle fascinator, rather than a veil.

It was stressful not knowing whether our big day would happen due to Covid and the ever-changing rules surrounding weddings. Luckily it went ahead with no restrictions!

My two best friends were my bridesmaids. They looked stunning in their long, black, one-shoulder gowns with side thigh splits.

REAL WEDDINGS

My bouquet is my own creation, as I run my own floristry business, Swanky Stems. It was a mix of foliage, Westminster Abbey VIP roses, spray rose porcelina, Kaaps Brunia and silverdust.

We didn’t want a conventional-looking cake, so went for an all-black, three-tiered design. Our first dance was to the Celine Dion version of Beauty and the Beast – everyone chuckled!

We hired a pianist, percussionist, DJ and saxophonist for entertainment. Our dancefloor was full from beginning to end!

We also gave out 100 foam glow sticks for all of our guests. I’m not sure who enjoyed them more – the adults or the children! 45

Our photographer excelled our expectations, as we wanted artistic and dramatic photos rather than anything too ‘lovey dovey’. The day goes by so quickly, so try and grab 15 minutes alone as a married couple to enjoy your day and relax a little bit.

nspired by The Complete Book of the Flower Fairies by Mary Cicely Barker, after a long lockdown wedding hair and make-up artists Marina Moore and Victoria Taylor were keen to get back to doing what they do best! “We wanted to create something pretty, floral and dreamy, utilising the outdoor space and lake we had available to us at Sible Hedingham’s Red Brick Farm. The result was a shoot that showcased pretty, soft pastels throughout, creating a whimsical, magical look that was original, fresh

and light. It really brought together all of the natural outdoor elements of nature – including the swans who decided to join in! The stand-outs for this shoot were the gorgeous paper flowers by Hire My Decorations; the hanging metal hoop decorated in florals by C Taylor’s Floristry; and the bespoke gowns created especially by After Elizabeth. We added our own handmade head pieces and fairy wings, which were worn by our models Megan Vickers, Erin Baker and Grace Taylor.” 53

Go for it – this style is hugely fashionable right now and packs an impressive visual punch. “Black wedding cakes for 2022 seems to be using the colour black as a base for the entire bake, which provides a sharp contrast for bright colours that ‘pop’ on top,” says Cakez’ Gemma Williams. “My most recent black wedding cake followed a marble sugar paste style, consisting of an extra-tall black base tier with streaks of grey marble throughout, plus a smaller top tier with subtle streaks of burgundy. “While there are many options for a black wedding cake; some should be approached with caution. A buttercream finish can still be achieved in a deep black colour – or using an airbrush to create a sheen effect – but both options can lead to your guests having a funny chat about the colour of their teeth when they dive into their slice, which may well be a talking point of the day that you may not have considered! Having said that, there’s been a big rise in the application of textures, experimenting with edible rice paper and ganache finishes, as well as introducing nudes to complement such delicate colours. Our croquembouches are customised to any customer wishes, from using locally-grown organic flowers to decorate, or any other decorations such as sugar work, or, of course, Belgian chocolate sauce. We asked Rebecca Peterkin from Blackmore’s RT Cakes on how the trend for serving cake at your big day came about in the first place… “Wedding cakes are believed to have originated from ancient Rome, when the ceremony was concluded by the breaking of a wheat or barley cake over the bride’s head. The couple would then eat some crumbs as their first unified act together as a symbol of luck and fertility. However, the earliest reference to ‘cake’ at a wedding is during the 16th century, following the development of royal icing and sugar paste. “The idea of tiered cakes may have started in medieval England, where sweeter treats such as scones, iced buns and cookies were stacked as high as possible, and it was believed the bride and groom would have greater luck and fortune if they could kiss over the top of this tower of treats without it collapsing! During the 16th century, the bride’s friends would traditionally bring a sweet bun to the wedding, the number of which reflected her popularity, therefore also contributing to the trend of wanting taller wedding cakes. “As refined sugar became more available in England, it was of course a popular choice of ingredient for wedding cakes. The whiteness represented the bride’s virginity and purity, with larger, whiter cakes also symbolising a show of wealth. THE MANE EVENT My hairdresser is trying to convince me to have balayage, but my mum thinks I shouldn’t stray from my usual highlights so close to my wedding. Is balayage for everyone – and are there any dos or don’ts? The term balayage is used a lot these days and it’s important to remember that it’s a free hand-painting technique, which will all look very different – which is in fact the beauty of it! A French word that means ‘to sweep’, with balayage highlights are ‘swept’ on the surface of random sections of hair to create a soft, sun-kissed look. With highlights, the lightener is applied from root to tip to create a more dramatic contrast between the lightened strands and the base colour. As an experienced salon colourist, I wouldn’t say there are specific dos or don’ts with this technique, so long as you have a trusted stylist that knows what will work for you. I personally wouldn’t change somebody’s hair colour so close to their wedding day unless they were 100% sure, so if there’s any uncertainty stick to what you know and try this new technique after your big day instead. TAKE A BROW I want to have my eyebrows shaped and tinted for our wedding and honeymoon, but I don’t want anything too harsh or permanent. What do you suggest? I’d suggest you opt for henna, a form of eyebrow tinting that’s used to stain the skin beneath the actual brow hairs. Creating an illusion of depth and fullness, while visually filling in any sparseness, it contains less chemicals so is a great option for sensitive skin. Lasting for six to eight weeks – almost twice as long as a regular tint – it can even encourage hair to grow back fuller in all the right places! However, in order for henna to last you have to look after your brows post-treatment, while also bearing in mind that the oilier your skin, the less likely the stain will last. It also won’t take as well if you suffer from skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis. This will help you narrow down those that fit the bill for what you’re after. Selecting a photographer is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make in the run-up to your big day. Why? The pictures are usually the only thing you’ll keep after your wedding… other than your spouse! The first thing to consider is whether you like the way the photographer takes their pictures, asking yourselves if you prefer a traditional shoot or something documentary in style. The initial meeting is also important before you commit, as you need a photographer that you like as a person. You’re going to spend hours with them on a very emotional day, so you need to ‘click’ to work together well. You should also take time to look at their wedding work on their website and social media. Read through the photographer’s blog if they write one, to understand them on a more personal level, and listen to other brides, grooms and suppliers. We’re struggling to decide on wedding rings. What are the trends – and are there any dos or don’ts when it comes to picking them? In recent years, wedding band traditions have taken a back seat, with most couples going for what they want. This means that dos and don’ts are pretty much a thing of the past! As a company that specialises in bespoke wedding rings, we find people like to choose shaped bands to match the setting styles, profiles and widths of their engagement rings. This allows both bands to sit perfectly together, rather than having two rings that don’t necessarily match. I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.

READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a

videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding.
