t feels like no time since we were celebrating our 70th issue, and now we’re turning the big 8-0. And while celebrations may be a little more subdued this time around (virtual toast, anyone?), we’re still just as excited to have reached this epic milestone! As we move into 2021, I’m so excited for the weddings I have coming up from last year’s postponements. Being a wedding editor, it probably comes as no surprise that weddings absolutely fill me with joy, so seeing friends and family having to put a halt to celebrations last year was hard – but it does mean we get a bumper 2021 season! Whether you’ve had to postpone or you’ve always planned to get married in 2021 or beyond, these pages are jam-packed with inspiration to get your day exactly how you want it. In recent months we’ve all come to realise that celebrations with our loved ones are precious, and it’s with renewed love for life that we look forward to this happening again. With the colder days, it’s time to get snuggled up on the sofa with a cuppa and your favourite wedding magazine (ahem!) and get planning the day of your dreams. We’ve got delicious big-day cakes (page 49), fabulous florals to adorn your venue (page 55) and a round up of the best Bristol and Somerset venues for winter nuptials (page 21). Enjoy!

DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS
When Mr White and Miss Christmas tied the knot in a last-minute pre-lockdown wedding at the beautifully historic Roman Baths, the pair joined to create the most wonderful surname: Mr and Mrs White-Christmas. The COVID-secure ceremony was performed beside the spectacular Great Bath, followed by a reception for 15 people on the picturesque Roman Baths’ Terrace. “We were due to get married in July at another venue,” Tilly White-Christmas says. “Because of the pandemic we had to move the date. To cheer ourselves up, we decided to look for a venue with real wow factor for our intimate ceremony, and we fell in love with the Roman Baths.” It took a while for the couple to twig that their surnames came together so brilliantly. “I wanted to keep the name Christmas as I’ve always loved it and wanted to keep the name going,” Tilly explains. “It just so happens that the man I married has the perfect name to go with it!” To find out more about tying the knot at Bath’s iconic Roman Baths, visit www.bathvenues.co.uk

Not only has Bristol-based Annabel Allen Millinery created a stunning new collection of customisable hats and headpieces for 2021, owner Annabel has also launched a range of luxury face masks. The masks are designed to complement the outfits of the couple, their bridal party and their guests. “They’re made from the same highquality materials and attention to detail as all our products,” Annabel explains. “We have a gorgeous ready-to-wear range available on our website, as well as offering a bespoke service. In addition to the luxury materials used on the outside of the masks, the inside is 100% silk for comfort, protection and breathability.” We’re also loving Annabel’s beautiful new headwear collection, which draws inspiration from oceanic shapes, colours and designs, reimagined to create individual yet wearable pieces. “While we reflect modern trends, our designs are also made to stand the test of time,” Annabel says. “Sustainability is at the heart of our creative process; offering timeless pieces made from the highest quality materials sourced from reputable suppliers. All our hats can be customised to fit the client’s requirements.” Visit www.annabelallenmillinery.co.uk

After working in the wedding and events industry for many years providing a successful photo booth service, brothers Jack and Joseph Eaton spotted an opportunity to create a timeless alternative to the traditional wedding guest book – using the spoken word. The Audio Guest Book is a classic 40s-style Bakelite telephone, which is delivered to your venue so your guests can simply pick up the phone, when they feel inclined to do so, and say, shout, laugh or sing whatever comes to mind! We’ve all experienced that awkward moment when trying to write a witty or personal message in a guestbook; the Audio Guest Book provides a more authentic, spontaneous way of capturing emotion from your loved ones. There’s also an option for guests to call in from abroad or home to leave a message – perfect for those marrying under COVID-related restrictions. The result is a collection of voice messages from your nearest and dearest, delivered on a USB in a glass bottle to be treasured forever. Find out more at www.audioguestbook.co.uk

http://www.bristol.ac.uk/venues/weddings WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? Nestled within romantic walled gardens, the enchanting Orangery at Goldney House is a timelessly elegant venue overlooking the city, providing an oasis of calm away from the everyday buzz of Bristol. With a Georgian folly, a shell grotto and ornate water feature, guests can enjoy the serenity of this beautiful space. The Orangery is a historic wisteria-clad building with original stone floors, high ceilings and wonderfully large windows that let in an abundance of light. It benefits from French-style doors that can be opened up on a warm day to let the outside in. There’s
also an exclusive area for the newlyweds to take a breath and freshen up during the day. LET’S CELEBRATE! Ceremonies are held in several spaces, from the intimate Rotunda (14 guests), to the elegant Georgian Drawing Room and Wills Reception Room (80 guests). Most receptions take place in The Orangery (110 day guests and 150 evening guests), but there’s also smaller settings for groups of between 12 and 50 people. A COUNTRY-CHIC CELEBRATION
in the West Country
Classic styling and an exquisite palette of grey and dusky pink made Krishna and Phil’s late-Autumn wedding so special Images courtesy of Helen Lisk Photography

REAL WEDDINGS
W
hen Krishna and Phil met on a beach in Croatia, they knew their lives were about to change. “We fell for each other straight away,” Krishna says. Five years into their relationship, they planned an epic trip to Iceland to celebrate their anniversary. “I’ve always wanted to go there,” Krishna says. “On the second day, Phil arranged for us to visit the Blue Lagoon at sunrise. He booked a private spa area, and with no one else around, he got down on one knee after carrying the ring around in his robe!” Back in the UK, the loved-up pair started planning their dream wedding, which they knew would have a classic country vibe, and would be in the West Country where they both grew up. They soon settled on Pennard House as the setting, and booked the date for 28th September, 2019. We caught up with Krishna to get the lowdown…
THE PERFECT SETTING The couple were keen to find a venue where they could host their whole day in one place, as well as somewhere they could bring their own wine from the father-of-the-bride’s wine merchant business. “We wanted our wedding to have a traditional feel, but with the freedom to make it our own,” Krishna explains. “Pennard House offered exactly that. A beautiful former family home in the heart of the Somerset countryside. We looked around on a wet November day and fell in love with the place.” The team at the venue made Krishna and Phil feel so welcome, and the beautiful accommodation and stunning bridal suite sealed the deal.
PUTTING THEIR STAMP ON Their classic country theme and soft palette was reflected throughout the day. “It was important for my flowers to represent the season,” Krishna tells us. “Being the first week of autumn, our florist, Alice at Forage and Blossom, suggested we go for lots of roses and foliage. We chose a range of neutral tones, which were slightly warmer and dusky to fit the time of year.” The florals tied in beautifully with some handmade rose petal paper from India – Krishna’s grandad who sadly passed away was Indian – which the couple used for invitations, menus and table names. “Our mums also spent the year drying out roses for confetti and to be scattered on the tables,” the bride says. “It gave the whole day a romantic feel with roses all around us.” Krishna envisioned a delicious, natural cake with pared-back decoration. “We had the most lovely consultation with Penny at Penny Bakes,” Krishna remembers. “She helped us refine our ideas and we settled on a semi-naked cake with a salted caramel drip. This was then decorated with macarons, roses and blackberries to mirror the season. The first time we saw it, we were over the moon with the result!” For a special touch, they sat the cake on the wooden boxes that their wine and champagne came in. Krishna’s uncle made the place settings using 100 corks that the father-of-the-bride had collected through his wine business. Each table was named after places that the pair had visited together. “Our trips always seem to have a funny story attached,” Krishna laughs. “Phil created cards to go on each table with a picture of the place and a little story of what we did there.” Guests were treated to an array of delicious seasonal jams and chutneys made by Phil’s mum as favours. Hand-tied labels on each jar read ‘Spread the love.’ Continuing the rose petal and wine theme, magnum wine bottles were dotted around the space with tall flickering candles and rose petals scattered around them. “My friend works for Elemis and gave us some candles,” Krishna explains. “The gorgeous scent carried around the venue.” As a nod to the bride’s heritage, they chose Indian food for their wedding breakfast. “Caroline Gent Catering were amazing,” Krishna says. “We had three delicious courses and chose sharing bowls for the main; it was a lovely relaxed way for everyone to eat as much as they wanted. This was followed by a classic English dessert of Eton mess with seasonal fruit. The food was locally sourced, which was important to us as we tried to use South West suppliers wherever we could.” Of course, everything was washed down with wonderful wine and champagne supplied by the bride’s father. 27

REAL WEDDINGS AISLE STYLE Originally wanting a strapless dress, as the day drew nearer Krishna realised she wanted something less summery. “In the end, I wore a stunning long-sleeved dress by Suzanne Neville,” she says. “I wanted to look like a bride, but I’m quite petite so didn’t want the dress to swamp me. I fell in love with the neckline of the original design of my dress, but I asked the designer to make a more fitted skirt. They were so accommodating and made suggestions along the way. It was amazing having a dress made from scratch to my exact measurements.” Krishna kept her look simple, to reflect her usual style, teaming her gown with a cathedral-length veil and nude Jimmy Choo stilettos, which she could wear again. “The jeweller who made our rings, Noble Fine Jewellery, also designed some earrings for me using my grandmother’s diamonds,” Krishna says. Phil and his groomsmen wore traditional morning suits, with Phil having his made for the occasion. He chose a cream waistcoat and gold tie to stand out from the groomsmen who wore grey waistcoats and dusky pink accessories. The bridesmaids looked wonderful in multiway dresses. “I had a mixture of family and friends and different ages in my party,” the bride says. “I wanted them to have the option to style the dress how they liked.”
IT’S A CELEBRATION During the ceremony and canapés, there was a harpist from Bristol, Marie France Riboulet, and for the reception a Glastonbury band called Charlie Miller and the Soul Agents performed. “Both were amazing,” Krishna says. “I’ll never forget walking down the aisle to the harp, and the band were a huge hit with the guests and got everyone dancing.” There was also a surprise act in the shape of the groom! “He did a rendition of Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty on sax!” Krishna smiles. “It was a huge surprise for our loved ones!”
MAKING MEMORIES Looking back, what did the newlyweds take away from their big day? “Married friends did warn us, but it goes so fast,” Krishna tells us. “You have to savour every moment. We both feel incredibly lucky and grateful to our family and friends.” When asked about the parts that stood out most, Krishna says, “The ceremony was amazing; it’s nerve-wracking, but coming down the aisle and making that commitment to each other is so special. We were thrilled we booked a videographer as we have been able to go back and relive it all again. For me, getting ready in the morning was a wonderful part of the day, as was walking into the wedding breakfast to applause and seeing all our plans come together – it was such an exciting moment!”

Krishna’s top tip: “Trust your suppliers – they’re the experts and their guidance is invaluable.”

ROMANCE IN THE COUNTRY
Gemma and Alex’s springtime wedding was brimming with pretty rustic touches Images courtesy of Shutter Bliss Photography
G
emma and Alex would often see each other while walking home from work, but it wasn’t until they stumbled across each other on a dating website that they got chatting. “On our first date I was on crutches after a knee operation,” Gemma says. “Safe to say, I couldn’t run away!” Luckily she couldn’t, as six years later Alex was planning how to pop the question. “The original plan was to do it at Longleat,” Gemma says. “But after I refused to go (we had been a few weeks before!) he decided instead to wrap the ring up and tuck it under the Christmas tree on 27th December.” After Gemma got over the surprise, they started planning their dream day for 13th April, 2019, with a church service at St Andrews in Banwell, followed by a reception at Batch Country House. Gemma continues the story…
33
We chose the church in Banwell as it’s where Alex grew up and his grandad was the church warden ther e. Batch Country House has great significance to me as its where my parents got married 17 years ago.
Instead of a traditional cake, we opted for an amazing cheese tower from Cobbs of Cheddar.
We went for a mink palette with hessian and tweed accents for a country feel. Alex’s company is Worle Glass and Joinery; he made the centrepieces from copper pipe and our brilliant table plan from an old window! 34
REAL WEDDINGS
Alex made wooden letters that spelled out G&A and lit them up with vintage lightbulbs.
I love prosecco, so the place settings were made out of corks! The tables were named after different types of wood, which was inspired by Alex’s joinery work. As it was just before Easter, we treated our guests to mini eggs as favours.
We arrived in style in
a fabulous old Austin from Triggols’ Vintage Wedding Cars. It made a great photo opportu nity.
The men looked handsome in blue suits with tweed waistcoats. Alex chose an ivory tie to stand out from his groomsmen who were in pink accessories to coordinate with the bridesmaids. My girls looked amazing in long floaty dresses.
My beautiful gown came from So Gorgeous Bridal. I loved the tight corset top and skirt that flowed out to the floor. For a personal touch, I accessorised it with my late-nanna’s necklace.
35
The party got started with our amazing wedding band, The Collective. They got every single one of our guests on the dancefloor!
I felt very nervous in the mo rning, but as soon as I saw Alex at the end of the aisle I just cou ldn’t wait to get to him.

Very VINTAGE
Louise and Harry filled The Longhouse with pops of colour and 50s-inspired styling Images courtesy of Bright Sight Photography
B
eing on the same course at university, Louise and Harry had heard of each other through mutual friends, but it wasn’t until their final year that they met. After first bonding over obscure comedy references, when they should have been listening to lectures, they were soon swapping albums and films. “It wasn’t long before we were going for walks by the canal and spending whole afternoons in coffee shops,” Louise smiles. “The rest, as they say, is history.” It may have taken three proposals, but the pair did finally get
engaged. “The first proposal was when we’d been going out for two weeks,” Louise laughs. “It was a lovely idea, but I said I wouldn’t hold him to it! He proposed again nine months later after a long weekend in Prague wandering picturesque streets and eating delicious food, and he proposed once more when we were back home tucked up in bed with the lights off. I said ‘yes’ that time!” The pair set the date for 15th June, 2019, and chose The Longhouse as the setting. Louise fills us in on all the details… 39
We fell for The Longhouse straight away; it’s got lots of space but it never feels like you’re away from the action. We loved that we could gauge the weather on the day and decide on an indoor or outdoor ceremony. It was also important to us to have affordable accommodation on site, as we had a lot of guests travelling in, and being able to have breakfast together the morning after was a wonderful way to round off the whole event.
For the flowers, we went for a very natural, relaxed feel accenting our colour scheme with plenty of greenery. We wanted a vintage country-garden vibe – and we certainly got it with sweet peas, peonies, herbs, roses, and gypsophila. The room smelled gorgeous! We wanted to keep the tables quite open to encourage conversation, so we didn’t have a big centrepiece. Instead, we dotted several vases of flowers along each table interspersed with multi-coloured tea lights for the evening.
I love the 1950s style, so we wanted nods to this without straying into kitsch. We used a palette of pinks, blues and purples throughout the styling, including the yards of bunting that Harry’s mum made to add to the colour and vintage vibe of the day.
We had a three-tier naked cake in three delicious flavours – lemon, salted caramel and carrot cake – all decorated in pretty blooms. Many thanks to our caterer for making sure both of us got a slice! I grew up in Norway, so we also had a traditional Norwegian kransekake – or crown cake – which was covered in Norwegian flags for that ‘subtle’ look! 40
I purchased floral images from LollyLanesShoppe on Etsy and used them to design our own stationery. We also bought table numbers from Ginger Ray, which looked like vintage film. For favours, we treated our guests to a packet of British wildflower seeds, a bubble wand, a drinks ticket and a pin badge for Macmillan Cancer Care. This was in memory of my grandad who we sadly lost not long before the wedding.
REAL WEDDINGS
We enjoyed canapés after the ceremony; this got people mingling, which was just the atmosphere we wanted. For our sit-down meal we had sociable sharing bowls, again to keep conversation going. Bacon and sausage rolls in the evening recharged the batteries!
I knew from the start that I wanted a tea-length dress. I still tried on a number of different styles (when else do you get the chance to try on lots of glamorous dresses?) but I knew that Polly by Brighton Belle was the one as soon as I put it on. Who knew wedding dresses could be so comfortable? I accessorised it with a hip-length veil and satin peep-toe shoes. The garden games were a big hit with young and old alike. We also hired a MySelfie booth, which you operate yourself – that was a definite win! We would recommend picking up some of your own props too; it added a real sense of individuality to the pictures. In the evening, DJ Cordell was fantastic. He read the crowd and inserted songs we’d requested at just the right moment – we danced pretty much all night.
Harry and his best man wore grey three-piece suits from Jeff Banks, while the other groomsmen rocked their own suits. They all had pink accessories so they looked very much like a cohesive group. My bridesmaids wore dresses from the wonderful Heart and Found on Etsy. They were able to pick their style, have it custom made and choose fabrics that matched the colour scheme. 41
We can’t praise the venue’s wedding coordinator, Danica, enough. She was everywhere, knew everything and was generally fabulous! Our humanist celebrant, Beth, was also wonderful; she helped set the tone for the day, and the ceremony she created really encapsulated us. Shar from SJP Bridal was so kind when my grandad was ill, taking photos of me in the sample dress so he could see how I would look on the day. That thoughtfulness at such a difficult time, in the months before he passed away, had a big impact on him and us.
I had a very emotional evening the night before. We had spent most of the day setting up surrounded by our favourite people, and by the end of it all I was quite overwhelmed. Come the morning, I was calm as anything! It was a wonderful feeling walking down the aisle with my dad, I was beaming at everyone I could catch eyes with. We spent most of the day laughing!

Full of natural tones and textures alongside pretty Italian-inspired touches, this exquisite styled shoot is perfect for those hosting intimate celebrations Images courtesy of Maria Madison Photography
A
s the wedding industry adapts to new restrictions, couples need guidance and inspiration for their wedding day. Even with just a small number of guests, you can enjoy beautiful moments and still feel like royalty. “This shoot was designed as inspiration for a small Italian-themed garden wedding, which keeps to the social distancing rule,” says photographer and shoot coordinator Maria Madison. The styling followed a natural theme, with colours and textures chosen to sit perfectly alongside the green grass, trees and stone of the setting. “All details were carefully used to create a light and relaxed atmosphere; an invitation to have a good time and create sweet memories for life,” Maria explains.

The sweetest THING
CAKES
We meet the regions’ best wedding cake designers
W
hile cakes have always been a staple at weddings, they’re coming into their own recently with showstopping, theatrical creations becoming the centrepiece of the day – whether you’re holding out for a grand affair or hosting an intimate celebration. We wanted to introduce you to some of Bristol and Somerset’s best bakers – the people who can bring a sweet delight to your big day…
Meet Alison Hieron of Creative Collections
Where did your journey into cake creation begin? My journey began after my second daughter turned one – mainly to start making lovely birthday and christening cakes! I took an accredited course in cake decorating and design, and it all took off from there. What’s your favourite thing about working in the wedding industry? I love to bring my couples’ visions to life and see their reactions when they see the final design. It gives me so much joy to see their enthusiasm and to be involved in their special day. What sweet treat do you turn to for comfort? I absolutely love cupcakes; they’re my go-to sweet treat.
Meet Sam Hunter-Wandzel of Cakecakecake
Where did your journey into cake creation begin? I was already making birthday cakes for family and friends, so when it came to my big day I decided to make my own cake. This was the point when I decided that I wanted to make more; I love the delicate aspects of wedding designs.
How can couples adapt their cake design for a smaller wedding? Couples don’t have to sacrifice the look of a bigger cake for a smaller wedding. Layers of iced polystyrene tiers can add to the look without wasting cake – and no one would know it’s not real. Visit www.creativecollections.uk
What’s your favourite thing about working in the wedding industry? I enjoy everything about being in the wedding industry, starting with meeting excited couples and discussing their vision, and of course, tasting! I love setting up at the venue and seeing the buzz of all the other trades setting up and perfecting their own part of the day.
How can couples adapt their cake design for a smaller wedding? During this hard time when guest numbers have been restricted, the weddings that have gone ahead have had to adapt. If the couple still want the visual effect of a three or four-tier creation, we have used dummy tiers and only one or two tiers of actual cake.
www.bradwakefield.com
What sweet treat do you turn to for comfort? For me, the best cake is a rich fruit, well matured in brandy with marzipan, and the biggest must for me is royal icing! If not a fruitcake, I will turn to shortbread for a sweet fix.
Visit www.cakecakecake.design 49
Meet Penelope Grundon of Penny Bakes
Where did your journey into cake creation begin? It all began for me about seven years ago, when my neighbour asked me to make her daughter’s wedding cake – an Australian-themed design with handmade koalas on it. I was hooked!
www.helenliskphotography.co.uk
What’s your favourite thing about working in the wedding industry? I love going through the whole process with my couples, from discussing their initial ideas and supplying tasters in my studio to drawing the design, choosing flavours and delivering on the day. What sweet treat do you turn to for comfort? Although I make cakes, I don’t have a sweet tooth! However, I do always enjoy a hot cross bun. How can couples adapt their cake design for a smaller wedding? I would suggest a two-tier cake to cater for an intimate wedding of 15 people, but keep the original flowers and style of cake they have chosen. Try adding some macarons as extra sweet treats for guests. Visit www.pennybakes.co.uk
Meet Tanya Smith of The Cuppa Cakery
Where did your journey into cake creation begin? During my time working in an office, my colleagues and friends would often ask me to make cakes for them. When I went on maternity leave I used the time to explore this business a little further. When it came to returning to work, everyone encouraged me to follow my dream of making wedding cakes instead. What’s your favourite thing about working in the wedding industry? I love the people in our industry. The amazing couples I get to create wonderful cakes for and the incredible local suppliers – there’s a huge amount of talent out there. What sweet treat do you turn to for comfort? I’m a complete chocoholic; there isn’t a day that goes by when I don’t eat chocolate! How can couples adapt their cake design for a smaller wedding? I believe any cake design can be made into a single tier or fewer tiers. There are also lots of sweet alternatives to a traditional cake, such as macaron towers, brownie stacks, cupcakes and sugar cookies. Visit www.thecuppacakery.co.uk 50
CAKES
Meet Jules Moule of Wakey Cakey Kitchen
Where did your journey into cake creation begin? I’d been creating birthday cakes and selling cupcakes at local food fairs for just over a year when my sister surprised me with tickets to an international cake show. I walked through the doors and saw the most jaw-dropping cakes; I knew then I wanted to design the most magnificent cakes I could think of. Fast forward seven years and I’m now the proud winner of nine international awards from that very show. What’s your favourite thing about working in the wedding industry? I have so many favourites. From meeting couples for the first time and starting our journey together to designing from paper to cake. I absolutely love the wedding day – when all the magic comes together beautifully. My heart does a little dance every time! What sweet treat do you turn to for comfort? I’m not very rock and roll – tea and biscuits make me happy! How can couples adapt their cake design for a smaller wedding? A lot of our couples are opting for an elegant one-tier cake with matching individually boxed cupcakes for any guests that are unable to attend. Couples are then keeping their main cake until they can celebrate with all of their loved ones. Visit www.wakeycakeykitchen.co.uk
Meet Ann Pickard of The Icing Centre
Where did your journey into cake creation begin? My wedding cake story began when I worked as a Saturday girl at a bakery in Westbury-on-Trym when I was 14 years old. I then went on to study in Cheltenham to hone my skills. What’s your favourite thing about working in the wedding industry? For me, the two best things are being able to work from my lovely studio at home and the fact that I only ever see customers who are happy and excited! What sweet treat do you turn to for comfort? My favourites have got to be either coffee cake or white chocolate blondies. How can couples adapt their cake design for a smaller wedding? If the couple feel a three- or four-tier creation is too large in the current situation, then I’d suggest a two tier with a very tall top tier to give stature. Additional height can be added with flowers and a personalised cake topper. Visit www.icingcentre.co.uk 51

You scored...6-10 You love the idea of sharing food rather than a formal dinner. Opt for canapés, sharing platters and a dessert table so your guests can help themselves throughout the day.
You scored...11-15 A winter-inspired menu would be perfect for you. You don’t have to go for a traditional Christmas dinner, there are lots of fun alternatives available that will keep your loved ones warm and cosy throughout the day.
You scored...16-20 You’re a traditional bride or groom-to-be and would prefer a sit-down meal. Ask your friends and family if they have any food allergies or preferences and ask your caterer to change the menu accordingly.
You scored...21-24 Why not opt for a food truck? It’s an up-and-coming trend across the UK and means your nearest and dearest can choose what they want to eat. Whether it be pizza, burgers, curry or waffles, there’s something out there to suit everyone. 53

FANTASY FLORALS www.goldfinchfloralstudio.co.uk | www.leeshawilliamsphoto.com
Beautiful blooms for every celebration
I
s a wedding even a wedding without flowers? Beautiful blooms have adorned nuptials since ancient Greek times, but with the range of florals, styles and installations ever-growing, as well as huge changes to the way we get married over the last year, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the choice. We chose three types of wedding and asked some of Bristol and Somerset’s best florists how they would turn them into the ultimate floral fantasy…
A small, intimate celebration
After an intimate celebration, make the most of your wonderful flowers by having them preserved as a keepsake to treasure forever. Find out more at www.flowerpreservationworkshop.co.uk

“For a smaller wedding, delicate and exquisite blooms like orchids would be fabulous; the detail of these beautiful flowers would be really appreciated in this setting. They’re also not the go-to wedding flower at the moment, making them even more special.” – Jacalyn Dobson, Cottage Flowers
“When it’s up close and personal, I love to include dainty flowers such as wax flower, delicate gypsophila and pretty paper-like anemones – at a smaller wedding you can really appreciate the tiny details that have so much meaning to them. I also love using quirky vintage vases for a personal feel.” – Beth Litaunieks, The Midnight Garden
“An intimate wedding is the perfect opportunity to explore conceptual ideas with your florist to really showcase your personalities and ensure your photos look amazing for sharing with your family and friends who couldn’t attend. A colourful floral arch could be used for the ceremony and then kept in place as a backdrop for the reception. If you’re only having one table for the wedding breakfast, then consider a decadent table piece such as a tall stand dripping with your favourite flowers.” – Jennifer Owen, Goldfinch Floral Studio 55

A fabulous garden party

“What could be more beautiful for a garden party than having your tables filled with the perfume of fragrant roses, stocks and garden herbs, teamed with fluffy delphiniums and peonies?” – Jacalyn Dobson, Cottage Flowers
56
“With garden-style weddings and marquee settings, it makes sense to be inspired by your surroundings – think abundant foliage and bud vases full of seasonal meadow or garden flowers. Keep your table decorations low and simple, while bringing height and interest with foliage chandeliers and suspended canopies of greenery.” – Jennifer Owen, Goldfinch Floral Studio “Whenever I think of a garden-style wedding, I imagine a real celebration where the flowers are organic and natural. I like to use vibrant colours and statement flowers such as big blousy peonies and café au lait dahlias to really take your breath away. Big arrangements exploding with foliage is always a favourite style of mine, and can flow beautifully outdoors to bring a real focal point to the space.” – Beth Litauniek, The Midnight Garden

FLOWERS
“To me, a modern wedding is all about being chic and elegant. Clean lines and a minimal colour palette will let the flowers do the talking. Picture grand, tall blooms such as delphiniums and veronicas, which are a real statement on their own, or pair with hydrangeas for a very contrasting look. You don’t always need a lot of flowers to provide impact.” – Beth Litaunieks, The Midnight Garden
www.goldfinchfloralstudio.co.uk | www.photosbyjim.co.uk
A contemporary-chic wedding
“There’s a trend for dried and dyed flowers being used, either instead of or mixed in with fresh blooms. If you have a specific colour in mind, then ask your florist to look into these options for a unique look. We’ve seen amazing candypink gypsophila or jetblack pampas grass.” – Jennifer Owen, Goldfinch Floral Studio
“For something completely unexpected and wow-worthy, ask your florist to explore what backdrops can be hired for an installation. I love this crescent moon arch by Floral Fabrications; it makes a statement for your ceremony and photos. There are more and more shapes coming on to the market, so if you have a theme such as geometric, celestial, etc., then smaller centrepieces can also be made to reflect these ideas.” – Jennifer Owen, Goldfinch Floral Studio
“Go big or go home! If you’re having a contemporary theme, then the flowers need to be bold. Not necessarily in colour, but in style. Try grouping florals togethers with little fuss or fluff to keep the overall look minimal and chic. How about architectural blooms such as anthuriums in peach or chocolate brown or the king protea?” – Jacalyn Dobson, Cottage Flowers CONTACT OUR EXPERTS: Jacalyn Dobson | Cottage Flowers | www.cottageflowersandmore.co.uk Jennifer Owen | Goldfinch Floral Studio | www.goldfinchfloralstudio.co.uk Beth Litaunieks | The Midnight Garden | https://midnight-garden.co.uk Rachel Ruddle | Flower Preservation Workshop | www.flowerpreservationworkshop.co.uk 59

THE CROWN AND THE David Emanuel shares his top tips to help you say “yes” to the dress
n w o g F
ashion designer and broadcaster David Emanuel is a much-loved household name, regarded as the don of bridal fashion since creating that iconic wedding dress for Lady Diana Spencer 40 years ago. CWM’s Kelly Andrews caught up with him at the launch of Bromley Brides’ new Wonder Room to find out about his plans for celebrating this career milestone.

What advice would you give to a bride-to-be setting foot inside a bridal boutique for the very first time? Try to keep an open mind and be objective. Think about what you’ve got at home. You might have an evening dress and you love the shape. So, why don’t you think about that same shape for your wedding dress? A lot of brides get completely wound up, particularly the ones who’ve over-shopped. When they tell me they’ve tried on 200 dresses, there’s clearly something wrong there. Equally, they might come in with a set idea – “I want skin tight, I want sexy.” It’s interesting, as it changes. I’ll say to them, “Put it on and look in the mirror. On your wedding day, are you going to be comfortable?” Then of course, you’ve got to take the time of year into account, where it’s happening, where the party’s going to be and all of that.
72
What do you need to consider before you start shopping? It’s all to do with the personality and character of the bride. If she’s a showy girl, that’s lovely, put her in a showy frock, but if she’s quiet, put her in something more modest. I go back mostly to Say Yes To The Dress, when the first question I ask is: “Do you have a budget?” She might say £3,000 and we can stretch to various styles with that. Then she’ll say, “I want more,” at which point the mother pipes up saying she’ll throw in another thousand. If they’d just said that in the beginning it would have been an
FASHION INTERVIEW easier task. I tell you, that show kept me on my toes!
It doesn’t have to be fantasy; you need simplicity for longevity.
What are the common pitfalls that brides should avoid when dress shopping? Invariably, brides will go on the internet and they’ll see these very glamourous models wearing these fabulous dresses, and they’ll rip pages out of magazines, but are they being realistic? Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself, try to be objective. I know it’s difficult, but look at yourself and think: what do I really want? You’ll go through various stages; you’re not going to get the first dress. I’ll suggest something, and the bride might say she couldn’t possibly, but I’ll insist she slip into it. Once she realises how great she looks, we go down a different path. So, keep an open mind, and let the girls at the boutique do their job, which is to make you look wonderful. You’ve got to trust them. Don’t forget: they’ve dressed hundreds of brides.
Do you think the Covid-19 pandemic has had an effect on the way brides think? I think, if anything, it’s got to completely focus the brides, because they’re under pressure. They might have booked, then have to unbook, and they’ve got to replan. It’s changing by the day – guest numbers are limited, but you know what? That’s not a bad thing actually. Let’s think about it: you don’t have to worry about auntie Flossie and uncle Albert who you only see once every two years! All that pressure is gone. You really should want just the people who love you to be there. Then, if you want to have a bigger party next year, or whenever, the heat is taken off. It should be a joyous time, enjoy it.
Based on your experience on Say Yes To The Dress UK, what’s your take on the ever expanding bridal entourage? Too much! You might have six people, with six points of view, six different tastes. No, we’re concerned with the bride. Sometimes, even the bride’s mum can’t get it, so you’ve got to rely on the very good stylists at your boutique, who are there to help you.
Knight Classical
What are your tips for creating the ultimate timeless look? You want to keep it relatively simple, but dramatic. You see, an iconic wedding gown has to have something about it – Diana’s was a 25ft train. Well, it needed drama, this was St Pauls, it was enormous, you couldn’t do a simple, quiet little dress. Or like Meghan’s gown – the story on that dress was the embroidered flowers from the Commonwealth. Big veil, but that was her message, and that was a simple dress.
Tell us about your involvement with Bromley Brides. When I found out (owner) Becky Griggs had been planning to expand and was still going ahead, I thought that was really courageous. I was blown away by the store the first time I came here, it looks great. I like people who take risks, good for her! The Wonder Room is camp and mad, great for a party. Get the dress, then celebrate it! It’s the 40th anniversary of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress next year. Do you have any plans to mark the occasion? I never thought I’d be sitting here talking about 40 years! I don’t know where the time’s gone, it’s like a dream. A lot has happened in my life, and this is a very exciting time. We’ve been bombarded by people wanting to do interviews and documentaries, so we’ve got to sit down, let the dust settle and go through everything. When I travel the world, designing Diana’s wardrobe is my calling card – everyone knows who I am because of it. Everywhere I go, people talk very highly of her, and it’s exciting that people still want to do something for her. What was it like to work with Princess Diana? She was the sweetest girl, as divine as you saw
her, no different. It wasn’t all done for the TV and press, she really was lovely. One time we were doing a fitting at Buckingham Palace and we didn’t have our van with us that day, so she asked us how we were getting back. We were planning to call a black cab, but she insisted on taking us herself. She had this little Ford, so we climbed in - Diana driving, me in the front and Elizabeth in the back. It was hysterical, when we stopped at traffic lights, people were aghast. There she was, giggling, it was so much fun. That’s what I remember about her, the fun. I was very fortunate, very honoured and lucky to design several foreign tours for her, and there were a lot of clothes to be done. She’d ring on a Monday and say, “Hi, it’s me.” She’d go on to say that she’d got something special and had nothing to wear, so I quickly had to think. We’d turn up the next day with sketches and some fabrics, and by Friday it was all wrapped and sent for her to wear that evening. We had to turn it around fast, and do you know, without fail she’d always say, “Thank you so much, I know you worked so hard.” It was touching. If you’re lucky along this road, you’ll meet one or two special people and she was one of them. You’ve dressed plenty of famous bodies over the years, who was your most memorable? I was in Paris, as Elizabeth Taylor couldn’t come to London for a fitting. She was at the George V Hotel in a huge suite, and I put her in a chocolate brown Chantilly lace cocktail dress. She looked fabulous and I didn’t have to put one pin in it. She threw open the double doors, and burst through them crying, “Franco, Franco, what do you think?” There he was, Franco Zeffirelli, the film director! All I could think was: “OK David, keep calm.” He loved the dress, but, she said, there was just one little problem. She would be wearing it to the White House and might have to dance with the President, but wasn’t sure she could. With that I grabbed her and spun her around the whole suite. “I think I can dance in this dress,” she said when we stopped waltzing. Listen, when those eyes fixed on you it was all over. She was special, she was real. It’s magic, private moments like that, which make your career, they’re precious. As I’m saying it, I could be back there, it seems like yesterday. Yet, I can’t believe… 40 years!

fter the first lockdown, Ruby Hyde Photography and model Scarlett Luxe were desperate to get their creative juices flowing. “We wanted to get out and showcase not only some beautiful bridal dresses, but also the gorgeous city of Bath, which we’re so lucky to live near,” Ruby tells us. They spent the day wandering around various locations in the city, including the idyllic gardens of the American Museum, with many shots taken among crowds of tourists and shoppers. “There were several delighted small children who thought Scarlett was a princess,” Ruby smiles. “The shoot offered a real moment of connection and empowerment; only the two of us were present to ensure it was as safe as possible, which meant we had to work as a strong team to create something magical.” 75

Meet Jane Dare of Eye Do Makeup What’s your favourite beauty look for winter weddings? I love creating these looks, when colours are bold and glamorous against a winter backdrop. Rich shades last longer and look fantastic in indoor shots. Opt for lip colours such as deep maroon, berry, wine and crimson. Afraid of a bold lip? Instead, accentuate the eyes with smoky greys or gold with a bold liner and full lashes. A subtle warm peach tone for the cheeks and lips will finish this style perfectly. How can you keep skin looking its best in winter? Start with a fantastic skincare regime to create the perfect canvas. Use an exfoliating scrub weekly, moisturise regularly and drink plenty of water. Prep lips with a scrub or soft toothbrush and plenty of lip balm to stop those bold lip colours looking uneven on the day. When it comes to your base, opt for a cream product rather than a powder, unless your skin is really oily. Add some glow with a radiant highlighter on the upper cheek bone, nose, cupid’s bow and temples, but use powder highlighters sparingly to avoid flash back from the camera. What product is on your Christmas wish-list? Definitely the Stoned Vibes Eyeshadow Palette from Urban Decay. The vegan-formula palette is packed with eight creamy shimmers and four grounded mattes – it’s ideal for winter weddings and party season. Visit www.eyedomakeup.co.uk 80

Q&A
We ask two of the regions’ top beauty experts for their tips and must-have products this winter Meet Magda Denenfeld of Magda Denenfeld Make Up What’s your favourite beauty look for winter weddings? My favourite look for winter weddings is fresh, healthy and glowing skin. Although I love natural make-up, I believe that a subtle smokey eye or a classic red lip would look particularly beautiful against a white dress and snowy setting. How can you keep skin looking its best in winter? As soon as winter comes, skin becomes thirstier than any other season, which is why it’s so important to take care of your skin when it’s cold outside. To look gorgeous on your big day, you want to make your skin as plump and moisturised as possible; it will make a big difference when creating a flawless look. It is not only up to the make-up artist to create gorgeous make-up, but also the bride to prepare skin prior to the day. What products can’t you live without in winter? My must-haves for winter are a great moisturiser as well as liquid and cream formula products. As skin becomes drier at this time of year, it’s the perfect way to provide moisture and coverage at the same time. Also, cold air and emotional moments call for waterproof mascaras and liners! R+Co Waterfall Moisture + Shine Lotion £25, www.beautyrebel.store/rco
Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Volumising Mousse £12.50, www.vanclake.com
“The amount of styling product I go through is staggering. Not because I use a lot, but because I can’t find anything that does what it says on the tin, without making my fine hair greasy, and weighing it down. So, ‘here we go again,’ I thought as I tried this, the next on my quest. But, as soon as I squeezed Waterfall from the tube, I knew it would be different, feeling somehow light in texture. Plus, the fragrance was divine! Designed for fine to medium locks, my hair drank the lotion in, and by the time I blow-dried it, it was super-shiny, light and manageable, with no oily residue to be found. For me, it’s the holy grail of styling products!” – Kelly Andrews
“I’m a bit of a mousse novice, so I’m surprised that the first one I tried I love! It definitely gave my normally fine hair volume. I could feel the difference straight away, from the first use and blowdry. It left my hair soft and silky with no residue left behind – you wouldn’t even know I’d used any product! This is perfect for those brides wanting a naturally voluminous look and feel.” – Danielle Harvey
Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler 5-in-1 Treatment, £34, www.philipkingsley.co.uk “This new product from Philip Kingsley promises to strengthen, tame and add shine, even to hair that’s hard to manage. My short locks tend to stick out in every direction, but with a small amount of the treatment, I found it very easy to style. I tend to use when my hair’s wet, but it’s also great for styling and taming frizz on dry tresses. My hair smelled great, and I even received a few compliments. I’d highly recommend it.” – Melissa Barker
GREAT HAIR DAYS SheaMoisture Sugarcane Extract & Meadowfoam Seed Silicone Free Miracle Styler £14.99, www.boots.com “Call me a cynic but I’m always a bit dubious of anything billed as a miracle product. However, this leave-in conditioning treatment does exactly what it claims to. Made with a blend of natural botanicals it does it all – detangles, nourishes, softens, adds shine and the list goes on. I put it to the test when I was in dire need of a trim and it worked like magic taming my unruly hair, making it easy to style, frizz-free and fragrant. I didn’t even have to use my heated tongs to tweak it into shape – hallelujah!” – Sarah Reeve 82

Fudge Professional Salt Spray £11.50, www.beautybay.com “There’s nothing better than achieving natural beach waves from the salt, sun and wind from a day spent at the seaside. However, since we can’t just pop to the ocean every day to achieve this desired look, Fudge Professional Salt Spray does the same job. My hair is on the fine side, and I love adding texture and waves to add volume and movement. The lightweight texture offered me medium hold, without turning crunchy and drying out my locks. It’s so easy to use, simply spray onto towel-dried hair, give a slight scrunch with your hands and leave to air dry. My top tip would be to plait your hair after use to create more defined waves.” – Olivia Gibson

ven in the hardest times, we love how the Bristol and Somerset wedding industry has joined forces to support each other and the wonderful couples in our region whose wedding plans have been changed in the last year. Photographer and shoot organiser Jess Bright says, “With most weddings being postponed or even cancelled during the pandemic, I saw many talented small businesses not getting the start they deserved, and I was inspired by their determination.” Jess got together with videographer Jake Bufton and a team of incredible new Bristol and Somerset suppliers at Hamswell House to create a beautifully intimate shoot filled with soft colours and light. “The shoot represents both what the industry has to offer, and the bright light starting to shine at the end of the tunnel,” Jess tells us. Ride on time
Q: I’d love to book a luxury wedding car as a surprise for my partner. What should I consider before booking? It’s really important to establish the style of car your partner would prefer before starting your search. Would a vintage or classic car be best? Or perhaps they’d prefer a modern style such as a Mercedes or a sports car. If looking for a bride, think about how she’ll get in and out of the car, or if you’re looking for a groom, then leg room and head height is always a consideration. Once you’ve shortlisted suppliers, check their online reviews and look at their Facebook page to establish if they’re actively posting recent wedding images. Next, call the company to get a feel for the level of service you would be receiving – and don’t forget to ask about any extras such as ribbons, flowers and refreshments. We recommend getting a confirmation of cost and what’s included in the package to avoid any grey areas on the day. Finally, and most importantly, go to view the car and meet the proprietor. Only book them if you’re confident that it’s a professional and reliable business, which will provide the very best service on your big day. CROWNING GLORY
Q: I’d love a showstopping headpiece for my wedding, but I’ve never worn anything like it before. Can you give me some tips on how to find the right style for me? Your wedding day is the ultimate opportunity to unlock your true style potential without letting day-to-day practicalities get in your way – so follow your heart! Decide if the headpiece is going to be the main event of your outfit or if you would like it to complement the look as a whole. If the latter, then you should consider the design inspirations behind your outfit, for instance the era, colours or motifs, and reflect these in your headwear. This will allow them to work together rather than compete for attention. If your outfit is simple, then you can really use your headpiece to reflect your personality, whether that’s bold and elaborate or sleek and sassy. Sometimes the choice online can be overwhelming and it’s easy to lose sight of your own style, so if you’re unsure, I’d advise choosing a piece from a company that you can speak to or visit. This way you’ll find a design that works specifically for you. Annabel Allen | Annabel Allen Millinery | https://annabelallenmillinery.co.uk

Q: We still want a photo booth, even though our wedding will be much smaller than originally planned because of COVID-19 restrictions. How do we make sure it’s safe and fun? Here are some points for you to consider… ❤ Check with your provider what safety measures it has introduced and if it works with your plans. Is your venue able to facilitate any additional space requirements? Will your deposit be lost if lockdown measures affect your day? Will there be a limit on the number of people using the space? ❤ Find out how many events your provider has attended under new restrictions. As with anything, practice makes perfect, and a reputable company with experience working in this way will ensure a smooth and professional service. ❤ Many companies will be removing reusable props from their packages, so why not get creative and incorporate your personalities with hats, scarves masks and novelty sunnies? This will add a fun element to the day and give you incredible photos! ❤ ’Tis the season for a discount! The events industry has taken a massive hit, resulting in 95% of our bookings being cancelled or postponed. We understand that for 15 or 30 people it will be difficult to justify the usual expense, so many events have gone ahead without a photo booth. A better option would be to ask for a discount based on your current needs. For example, you could ask for a shorter time period and not to have a guestbook. ❤ We would recommend one of our open photo booths to make sure groups of people are not having to crowd into an enclosed space.

Q: I’m nervous about wedding dress shopping. What can I expect? At Rookery Bridal, we aim to make you feel as relaxed as possible. We understand that you’ll be nervous, but you are in safe hands with our experts. Appointments are usually set for an hour and a half to two hours. You and your party will receive a warm welcome before being shown to our gown area – we have a lot of gowns! To help you settle in, you’ll receive a short introduction to what’s in the store and you’ll be asked a few questions so we can ascertain your preferences, if you have any. You don’t need to know what you want, we will guide you and ensure you try on lots of shapes and styles so you begin to form a picture of your perfect dress. Just bring yourself, there’s no need to have particular underwear or shoes, we just want you to feel as comfortable as possible. You will be helped into the gowns in the privacy of our changing rooms. Whenever you have any questions – just ask! Sarah Hackett | Rookery Bridal | https://rookerybridal.co.uk
MUSIC TO YOUR EARS
Q: How do I convince my partner to have live music at our wedding rather than just a playlist? The best comparison I can draw is Glastonbury Festival. You could stay at home and watch it on TV for free, or you could be at the festival. Yes, you can hear the music from home, but actually being there in a muddy field with your friends soaking up the atmosphere and sharing in the moment surrounded by other revellers makes a huge difference to your experience. The same goes for live wedding music. You may be able to put together a playlist of your favourite songs, but inevitably there will be gaps between tracks and technology can’t create that feeling of electricity in the air that live music can achieve. A professional musician is a great focal point that can keep the flow of songs smooth, tune in to your guests and deliver a performance that will be remembered long after the day. I’ve never heard people reminiscing about a playlist! Lucy Harvey | Lucy Harvey – Vocalist & Saxophonist | www.lucyharvey.co.uk

WINTER TRAVEL
With travel rules and regulations constantly changing, newlyweds and nearlyweds will be looking to the UK to celebrate post-vows, and minimooners will be spoilt for choice when sticking to destinations closer to home; here’s two to whet your appetite: Situated deep in the Scottish Highlands, 57 Nord occupies a dramatic position between three ancient sea lochs surrounded by the majestic Kintail Mountains. With floor to ceiling windows that frame the panoramic views stays here are largely elemental, particularly in the autumn and winter months when the weather is ever more startling. Cosy up by the fire and watch the weather roll in with a dram of specially selected whiskey from the honesty bar and tuck into the hamper of artisan goodies. There are ample wet weather activities for epicureans: from the neighbourhood Fairy Tale Distillery to the internationally acclaimed Talisker; fine dining at Kinloch Lodge or fresh crayfish cooked at home from Duncan, the neighbourhood fisherman. At night watch the famous Eilean Donan castle light up from the cottage and spend the evening on a tour of the night’s sky with the help of the in-house guide – how romantic!
